We're going to talk to Dave Burquette, mine's beat writer for the the Detroit
Free Press about the Lions. TheSeahawks week four opponent coming up next after
headlines brought to you by Venue Kingsand venue Kings dot Com. The Mariners
scoring eight runs last night in SanDiego, their most runs in a game
since June twenty second. That wasbig, but bigger was who provided the

(01:18):
offense. Julia Rodriguez four hits, three runs, scored a two run homer.
Col Rawley three hits, two homeruns, one from each side of
the plate. He became the firstMariner to have home runs from the left
and right side in a game twicein his Mariners career. The Marners got

(01:38):
seven to two thirds innings from AllStar pitcher Logan Gilbert, and they won
at San Diego eight three, butHouston also won, so the Manorers lead
in the American League West remains attwo games. Tonight, Bryce Miller starts
for Seattle six to forty start inSan Diego, trying to get the Mariners
their first series win in seven sets. Hard to believe they're still in first
place without having won a series inseven sets. Manager Scott Servis said before

(02:02):
the game last night that starting pitcherBrian Wu is going to return to the
rotation this weekend when the Mariners areplaying the Angels in Anaheim. Wu hasn't
pitched since June twenty fourth. Itlooks like he's going to go Saturday,
the next to last game before theAll Star Breaks starts. The Sounders won
last night two won at the SacramentoRepublic FC to advance in the to the

(02:22):
semifinals of the US Open Cup.You heard that on nine to fifty k
am last night. Seattle has wonthe US Open Cup four times, and
now they're two wins from doing itfor a fifth time. The semifinals of
the euro Championships in Soccer continue todayat noon in Germany, with England meeting
the Netherlands. All over the Internetor pictures of the Dutch just dancing and

(02:45):
having a great time of the Seaof Orange in Germany across the euro Championships.
Whoever wins England and the Netherlands todayplays Spain in the Euro's Finals Sunday
in Berlin. Spain beat France twoto one yesterday in the other semifinal and
the Cope America Semifinals Atlanto Messi scoredhis first goal with a tournament. Argentina
b Canada tu nil in the Meadowlandsin New Jersey. Argentina plays in the

(03:08):
Copa America Finals Sunday in Miami. They'll play the winner of tonight's semifinal against
Uruguay in Columbia. That's in Charlotte, North Carolina the Storm. They host
the Las Vegas Aces today at noonin a Mattin and a rare day game
on a weekday at Climate Pledge Arena. And the Washington Huskies baseball team hired
Olympia Eddie Smith is a new headcoach. Smith comes from Utah Valley University

(03:31):
in the Western Athletic Conference. Hereplaces Jason Kelly, who left out of
nowhere last week to become the pitchingcoach at national finalist Texas. A and
M has promised our series on Seahawksopponents for twenty twenty four continues today with
the Detroit Lions Week four on aMonday night and what will be a Rock

(03:51):
and Ford field. It's always loud, but it's going to be loud,
or never has been, with thequality of the team that the Lions now
have. Somebody who knows how goodthe Lions are Dave Burquette. He's been
the Lions beat writer for the DetroitFree Press for what it is in fifteen
years. I think now, Dave, he joined us on the Beacon Plumbing
Hotline. Appreciate you joining us,Dave, I know these days are fewer

(04:13):
and fewer until the grind gets real. I appreciate you joining us. I've
seen you quoted as saying this isby far the best Lions team you've covered.
What makes them so good in thelast couple of years. Yeah,
no, you're right about that.I mean, I've been on the beat
a long time and this is probablythe first time going into a year where

(04:34):
I think they have a realistic shotat reaching the super Bowl. And you
know, it's a couple of things. I mean, it starts with you
know, Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. Bread's done a great job putting the
roster together. It's one of thedeepest in the league. Young talent that
should be on the rise. Youknow, Dan does a really good job
with the locker room. And well, ultimately, I think, you know,

(04:54):
we're not talking about a team thathas to you know, get through
you know, Patrick Mahomes and oneround and Joe Burrow the next, and
you know, a slew of thetop quarterbacks in the game. This is
this is a team that you knowhas should be considered one of the best
teams in the NFC. They shouldbe a favorite to to maybe get that
one seed. And you know, even if they don't, they have the

(05:15):
weapons that they can go and winon the road and win in various ways,
running the ball, passing the ball, maybe even defensively with the upgrades
that they made. So I reallylike what the Ross Lions roster looks like.
I really like what they did inthis office. What Jared's golf giving
him beside touchdowns and a few turnoversand stellar quarterback plays, but overall,
what is Jared goff rut? Yeah, you know, I mean, look,

(05:40):
I still don't think anyone's you know, calling him one of the top
five quarterbacks in the game. Butwhat he's done is he's really been sort
of the right guy for the Lionsat the right time. I mean,
the way he's at least the lastyou know, season and a half taking
care of the ball, always seemsto get in in the right you know,
play call offensively. You know, again, this is a team that

(06:00):
because they're so multi dimensional on offensethat they can run the ball, they
can throw the ball, they haveweapons. They put a lot onto their
shoulder to make sure that whatever thedefense is giving them, he's doing the
right thing. And he's really donea good job of that, especially last
year he did that. So Ithink there's that leadership aspect that he's brought
to, you know, a teamthat was pretty young in the past,

(06:24):
and everyone knows the limitations in hisgame, and that's why the Lions has
done a really good job of makingsure they have one of the best offensive
lines in football. And as longas those guys stay healthy this year,
this offense should be long the bestof the league. Speaking of the offense,
a mom Ross Ain't Brown. Hehas been electric and he's now on
the Netflix series been featured as oneof the star components on that talk about

(06:46):
his game and how he's gotten betteryear in a year out. Despite looking
around the NFL, there's so manyother good receivers, but you cannot leave
out a mom Ross Saint Brown andthe problems he brings to defensive coordinators and
the Stucks will have their share ofthat on Week four as well. Consistent,
you know, and you're ready, and then you look at those other
receivers and most of them are bigger, faster, stronger, or whatever it

(07:10):
may be. And so you kindof look at that and you know,
you know, justin Jefferson's going toput up his numbers or a DK Metcalf
out you know with you guys right, and no, man, Ron doesn't.
He doesn't look like that, buthe just gets it done. I
mean, he knows how to runroutes. He's he's got really sure hands.
And you know, guys, youknow we may even have talked about
this a couple of years ago.Like the very first training camp practice.

(07:30):
I'm watching him after practice, hecatching balls up a jugs and I,
you know, stop him and Iask him about that routine. Yeah,
you know, two hundred and twoballs catches every day and he sort of
explains the reason behind it, andI'll tell you what it's just about every
single practice and then he's on theexact same thing. So, you know,
it's the work that he puts inand the fact that as good as

(07:53):
he is and the type of seasonthat he had that that that doesn't change.
I think that's a big, abig part of the success that he
said he forgot Joe Us from Michigan. I assume you're in Michigan still vacationing.
You're trying to get away and thenbe compared, my son's got a
baseball tournament driving right now. Ohbeen there? Good for you Dad,
Way to go. Yeah. Ijust will let you know I'd moved my

(08:13):
parents to suburban Detroit. They livein Rochester Hills now and they appreciate your
coverage of the Lions. They readall the time. So thank you for
that. You welcome. You mentionedthe offensive line. It's interesting that that
would have seen to be a concertedeffort and a strategy, if not by
by the whole regime there, startingwith Brad Holmes and and the coaching staff.

(08:37):
What has that How long did thattake to jel and was it an
effort or did they? Did they? How much has that benefited Detroit to
have the continuity and the skill andthe youth on that offensive line? Oh?
Mentally, I mean that that tome is you know, outside of
the people in charge and Brad andDan, I think that's the biggest reason
they had the success they have becauseyou know they I mean really since they

(09:01):
took over, and it started withwith you know, Brad spreadecessor Bob Lynn
sort of the commitment to building theoffensive line. I mean he drafted you
know, Taylor decorator left tackle forgoing on a decade drafted Frank Bragg.
Now they're all Pro center or ProBowl center, you know who's been there
for you know, six or sevenyears now. And Graham Glaska is in
a second tour of duty now atguard. But he was an original Bob

(09:22):
Quinn draft pick. So you knowa lot of those pieces from placed Jonah
Jackson who just left, you know, Bradford, the Jerry on top with
today Sewell. I mean, he's, you know, might be the best
lineman in football right now. Andthat was Brad's first draft pick. And
you know, the morning of hisfirst draft at GM met I at the
hotel, was staying at We're sortof talking about the draft, and you

(09:43):
know what he hoped to do withthe team, and you know, he
didn't reveal his draft board at thetime, but he said, you know,
he wanted to build a monster likethey had in LA with the Rams.
And he was talking about Robert Quinnand Michael Brockers and Aaron Donald,
how they they sort of went backto back to back almost with the defensive
lineman. And really that was hisvision from the jumps. If he could
get a guy like Pene Sewell tomake that offensive line complete did it.

(10:07):
He resigned Frank right now a coupleof weeks later, and you know,
again, this thing has been oneof the best in football. And because
it's so good, that allows theteam to cover up for some of Jared
goff shortcomings, and that gives themsome strength in the run game, and
you know, it's it really isjust the focal point of this entire team.

(10:28):
And if something happens there, theyare older and they have some injury
issues now, if something happens,I think that's the biggest thing that could
hold this team back this year.Looking at the defense, you mentioned earlier
that they did make some moves andthey traded for what Carlton Davis went out
and got Robert what's his name Robertson, Anik Robinson, drafted Terry and Arnold

(10:48):
and I know Aaron Glynn. He'saggressive, he wants to run that man
heavy defense. Is this going tobe enough for This defense is better than
they were last year, especially inthe playoffs. I do think they're going
to be better. I don't knowhow much better I think they have,
you know, certainly better personnel onthe secondary. You know you mentioned those
three guys Dennis Rakes are the secondround pick was you know, one of

(11:11):
the top cornerbacks in the draft too. So really they have four new cornerbacks.
They really completely overhauled that room. And but there's gonna be some growing
pains there, you know, becausethe young guys, you don't know how
they're gonna come along, you know. And up front they added you know,
DJ Reader and Marcus Davenport too. With both those guys are coming off
and there was neither it was ableto spring. So you know, it's

(11:35):
gonna look a lot different in theory. But I do think that the defense
just from a personnelity to take astep forward. They still and maybe they
still need a little more pass forus to pay with Dayden Hutchinson. But
you know, the moves they made, it was a very concerted effort to
get in the past department defense, and I do think they've done that.

(12:00):
You mentioned Rake Shaw, second roundpick from Missouri. Is there a chance
he's a starter at corner when theSeahawks seam in Week four? You know,
I think look at just kind ofguessing what they're going to do right
now, I would guess it's Terryand Arnold and Carroldon Davis on the outside.
The key for Rake Shraw and MeetRobertson for that matter, is what
happens with Brian branch I mean BrianBranch was he played a lot of slot

(12:24):
cornerback last year as a rookie.Gave him a little bit of run at
safety early, but really just movedhim back to that slot position so that
he could focus on that and heplayed. He played well. He was
one of the Lion's best defensive players. The Lions want to give him,
play him a little bit more atsafety this year, and if that happens,
that's going to open up that thatslot cornerbacks either meet by Robertson or

(12:45):
organist Rakeshaw. So I think it'sa little dependent on what happens with Brent.
They do have two other safeties too. I fought to Malafone who had
a pretty strong Finnish last year, and Kirky Joseph has led the team in
interceptions the last two years. Sothey have some options.'re not really
locked into doing one thing. It'sgoing to be a let's see what happens
in training camp all this thing shakesout, I'm gonna throw one at you.

(13:07):
Talking about the secondary, it's it'sa way out shot in the dark.
Quandre Diggs remains an unsigned free agent. Of course, the Seahawks let
him go. He was a Lionscaptain. You covered him. He talks
a lot when he was out herein Seattle, talked a lot about his
affinity for Detroit, for the franchise, for the chance they gave him.
Doesn't sound like there's any room inthe end for him. But is that
something that could possibly down the roadbe some reunion. Well, you know,

(13:31):
and I do. I like Kwandra. You know, he was a
good guy to talk to in thelocker room. Otine We're then to do
some really good things after Matt Patriciaussomehow, you know, decided that he
couldn't cut it in Detroit. ButI don't think it's in the cards right
now, just because and I don'tknow what Kandre wants. I haven't talked
to name or anyone in his camp, but you know, I would assume
he's not coming anywhere to be abackup and you know, play special team

(13:54):
snaps. And just given the depththat the Lions have and some of the
young guys that they need to play, Brian Branch, Kirby, Joseph Yeah,
I just don't know how he wouldsit in right away after to get
an injury. At Lions have plentyof cap space that they could certainly go
out and get someone like that,be it a cornerback or at safety because
of the branch and Rick Robertson's flexibility, But right now, I don't see

(14:18):
that happening. With how the Lionsseason ended with Dan Campbell taking some taking
the blame because he was being ultraaggressive, do you see maybe Dan taking
a step back this season and notbeing as aggressive, but trying to pick
and choose when he should go forit on fourth downs and other scenarios where
I know he wants to win,he's all about it. Yeah, right,
not at all. No, That'swho he is like he you know,

(14:41):
I've talked to him a couple oftimes about sort of the you know,
those the calls in that game andany regrets and looking back at the
film and what he thought, andnot once has he expressed any regret about,
you know, going forward on thosefourth downs. You know there there
was one called date in the game, minute left and they ran the ball
on third goal, the one didn'tget in and that's the one call that

(15:03):
he said that you know, hewould he would do over if he could,
and really they should have got inon that play. James Williams,
we missed the blot. But youknow, I think Dan looks at that,
and everyone on the team looks atthat and says, you know,
we've won a lot more than we'velost by going forward on fourth down.
And part of that is the mentalityit sort of instilled and everyone in the
you know, in the organization andthe team that we are going to create

(15:26):
our own luck in our own winshere. And so I don't think you're
going to see Dan changing that, even though I know there certainly are people,
you know, out there, evenLions fans, who would like him
to maybe be a little less aggressive. Taber Katta, the Defrad Tree Fast
Lines beat writer, talking about thefourth opponent the Seahawks have this year,
the Detroit Lions here on ninety threepoint three KJR. I got to ask

(15:48):
you because you brought it, Chrisbrought up anyway, what's it like to
cover Dan Campbell. I was fortunateas a Seahawks beat writer to cover Pete
Carroll for fourteen years, and hewas a pleasure. He was always a
comedy and respecting the media and alwayssay a lot, but didn't tell you
much, but he said a lot. What is it like to cover Dan
Camp? I would think that'd bea hoot and unpredictable. You know,

(16:11):
one of my colleagues, you know, not here in Detroit but in the
NFC nor if it told me hesaid, you know you, after all
you went through covering from the coacher, it's good that you finally got him
and maybe you would never have tocover never another coach again. So you
know who that happens. But look, I would guess Dan, it's probably
a lot like Pete was for foryou guys in Seattle, and that you

(16:33):
know, he's he's very genuine. You know, what you see in front
of TV is what he's like behindclosed doors. You know, he definitely
is accommodating to the media. Hedoesn't tell you everything, but he's also
a guy that, look, ifyou ask him something and he's already discussed
it with the team, he's goingto be up front and tell you about
it, And you know, that'sall I think you can ask for.
You know, he's he's been abreath of fresh area. A lot of

(16:55):
lions fans, and I go backto that first press conference, and I
know a lot of people nationally, you know, we're kind of scratching their
heads like what is this guy doingor saying biting kneecaps. But here in
Detroit that was received pretty warmly.I think I even wrote something like the
day after, like, man, this was it was just first, it
seemed to fit, you know,it seemed like he was going to be

(17:17):
a fit. And that's that certainlylived up to be the case. Dave.
I'll let you go be a gooddad. Hopefully your son plays well
in the tournament. They have agreat time and eat a lot of hot
dogs in cotton candy and whatnot. But thanks a lot, Thanks a lot
for joining us. Thank you keepproviding the lines coverage for my eighty nine
year old parents in Rochester Hills. They appreciate it. You'll be well,
sir, we'll see it. Appreciatethem read I will, I appreciate.

(17:38):
We'll see you in first of Octoberand Detroit. Dave Briquette, Detroit Free
Press, covering the Detroit line forfifteen years. You talk about a guy
who's seen some stuff. He's goneinto an oh for season yeah, I
mean Cliff April topped about that.Yeah, a matter of fact, when
you were I think your kids areback in town, and Cliffs was in

(18:02):
with Mike and I we filled inand we brought that up because he has
been on the worst teams and thenhe is on one of the best teams,
and just the correlation, the differencethere and how that changes everything.
You went from we didn't want asingle game man to hosting the super Bowl,
champion the Super Bowl and winning thatwhole entire thing, Like you've been

(18:25):
that the worst to the best. That's crazy. You not everyone gets that
experience. You don't obviously want tolose every game. But he had to
see the best of both worlds. You got to be on the good side
and the bad side. I thinkDavet's going to see it this year.
I think the Lions are going togo to the super Bowl. They should
have beaten San Francis so and that'swhy I asked him that question. But
that was so Dave Dan Campbell. In the middle of the game, I

(18:45):
said to myself, is that theparty where at that is Campbell. He's
consistent and that's the message he wassending to his team by going for it
there, and it's motivation for thisseason because they know how close they are.
And now, as I asked withthe defense was kind of the one
thing that was also an issue becauseI think they gave up. They were
giving up in the playoffs twenty threepoints for a game. I think it

(19:07):
was third most. Yeah, theRams almost got them on their home fields
exactly, So the defense got afew key players. Health also plays a
role, a little bit of luck. Yeah, this team could be very
well representing the NFC. Really interestingto hear him talk about how the Lions
path, even previous GM was tobuild with the offensive line first and then
go get the quarterback and bris Brownand my receiver. Hell yeah, that

(19:32):
is how you have to do itin order to sustain. And that's what
the Lions have done. And hispoint was it's because the offensive line is
so good, as quote was, that allows the team to cover up for
some of Jared Goff's shortcomings. Itallows them to have a running game.
It really is the focal point,he said of the Lions the offensive line.

(19:52):
The Seahawks have not done that. They've tried to get by on the
offensive line for a decade. Andit caught up to them in a huge
way. Once Russell Wilson was notold and young enough to escape the pass
rush, and once Marshall and Lynchwasn't here anymore and Chris Carson had to
retire and they didn't have a runninggame, that offensive line issue caught up
to them in a big way thelast few years. Detroit is the opposite.

(20:15):
Their offensive line is the foundation oftheir franchise and got him to where
they are. I think they're goingto the super Bowl. I think the
Seahawks are going to play a superBowl team in Detroit in week four.
I asked them. Also, ifyou missed it, you can see it
on listened to it on the iHeartRadioapp. Later today after the show,
Chrystal post it. I asked himabout Uandre Diggs. He's still unsigned.

(20:36):
I don't know. I haven't talkedto Diggs either what he would be interested
in. But he's in Texas athis home in Austin. But he loves
Detroit. He loves the environment theyhad when they weren't good, and love
that start that they gave him thefact that they let him change positions and
moved them all around. The secondaryhe was a captain of that team,
and I asked him, you thinkthe Lions would resign Quandre Diggs? He

(20:59):
said, I don't think gets inthe cars. Day Brooker just told us
he's not coming anywhere to be abackup, and the Lions are pretty stocked
with young players in the secondary.I don't know how he would fit in.
In case you were wondering about KwanderDiggs and the Lions four nine,
four to five one, tell themwe'll do text line. Are comments and
reaction to that? And what youthink of the Lions? Are they a
super Bowl team? Is that thetoughest team the Seahawks are going to play
outside the NFC West? I thinkit is. Your comments are coming up

(21:23):
neck we'll read them back as wedo every day at eleven thirty next on
ninety three point three KJRFM, Hi, welcome back Greg Betel to Newstribune and
Christopher Kay with you before we getthe text at four nine, four to
five one, I want to correctsomething I said earlier that said the Mariners

(21:45):
were playing tonight at six forty. They play at three forty this afternoon.
I assumed that their getaway from SanDiego ninety five miles up the road to
Anahem would be a night game, but apparently they need a day game for
that, So thank you from thetext line A couple of texting in the
Mariners play at three four What eatthis afternoon? Unroot sports their's season,
their series finale at San Diego. Then they play night games in Anaheim into

(22:08):
the weekend for the final series beforethe All Star break. We talked last
segment about the Detroit Lions with Dabracquetteof the Detroit Free Press and he says
it's the best line teams he's evercovered in the fifteen years. Has been
on the beat obviously, and hehe thinks they're a super Bowl caliber team.
And he says because their offensive line. Hmm, interesting counterpoint to what's

(22:30):
been going on in Seattle for abouta decade. On their offensive line.
I want to tell him what dotext line? The music means? That's
time to read those from our guyTeddy ballgame in a five six two?
Why don't the Seahawks look to theCFL for talent to plug holes? I
would think there's got to be sometalent up there to look at, right,
Brandon Browner, Chris Matthews, they'vedone it before, not recently.

(22:52):
Rob rang, friend of the show, friend of the station, Tacoma based
NFL draft expert, is also ascout for the British Cumba Lions in the
CFL, and he is a trainingcamp and he comes down and scouts players
that the Seahawks may be about tocut. But that's the other way of
what Teddy Ballgame's talking about. Forthe Lions and the CFL to sign discarded

(23:15):
Seahawks. The mayor of this isgoing back to a little bit of baseball.
The mayor of Mabel Valley and Fornesswould tell you that Gregory Santos has
a little bit of red ass.Yep, he does. M H.
That's one way to put it.And that's from Ben from the four two
five. I loved it. GregorySanto's definitely my favorite Mariners pitcher pushing Ryan

(23:36):
Bliss is my favorite Mariner after justone outing. I loved it. Don't
you bump me? I thought itwas great. That was awesome from the
four two five. Regarding the Marinerstrading for these big time names Vlad number
one, Roberts two Scanos single handedlyincreased my interest in this team exactly with

(23:56):
that performance. It came out ofMount Dun's been fire. Especially liked him
going inside against pro far without backing. Yeah, that too. Anybody's in
on that, which is great.PROFI was the one he bumped and stared
down at the end of that firstat bat. First at bat is a
Mariner, he's beefing. I lovedit. Game two, you need some

(24:18):
of that hum. This is fromthe four two five. Haven't you noticed
that the potals trades don't work out? The Mariners would have been better off
and probably made the playoffs in twentytwenty one and twenty twenty three if they
didn't make any trades. Yeah, not all trades work. That's part of
the deal, right, Yeah, that's there is There is some There is

(24:41):
some track record of guys company orwhether trade or free agency, and absolutely
doing nothing offensively once they get here. Nothing. Go back to Robinson Cano
and way before that from the sevenone four Get Vla Guerrero. Love some
Gregory Santeles. We need more pissand vinegar on this team. Greg I
guess we could say that, right, Oh yeah, absolutely, I agree.

(25:03):
Anybody wants Guerrerol. I don't knowthe is gonna be available with Toronto,
but oh this is okay. Fromthe two States, Guerrerol will be
great, but I could live withRoberts. But do we have faith that
the Mariners can get it done?Yeah, Roberts singular what he met.
Just so we're clear of the whiteYes, uh, that's the question.

(25:23):
Are they going to do it?Probably not. That would be a departure
for their past. I'm not They'venever done it. Four five. There's
this guy in Atlanta we could tradefor. Oh yeah, that's he would
hands down be our best at oroh wait, his name is like kell
Nick or something. That's gonna alwaysstay just a little bit. And that

(25:45):
was a straight cash dump. Therewas no reason to do it. He
didn't have to do that. Hewas still under club control. He was
still hot. Take care from thetwo five to three Mariners will never lose
the division lead. Now that's ahot take. That is that's pretty hot

(26:07):
at all. Right, Okay, you don't think it's hot now I'm saying
that're not gonna lose it all Oh, okay, that's that's from man.
That would be from May until theend of the season. All right,
that's tough. I'll tell you afterthis. If they hold onto the lead
into the All Star Break, theyhave five games left in the Ulstar break.
They're up by two games in thedivision. If they have the lead
through the All Star Break, thatseries against Houston here at home will determine

(26:33):
whether they stay in first. Imean they could be six to seven games
up after that series, or whetherthey lose the lead. I mean that
not a series in July will makeor break you. But that's three games
against the Astros soly nineteen twenty andtwenty one at the Yard and Soto that
you could go from say two gamesor one game up to four or five
in a weekend from the eight ohone. Teams that worry about prospects over

(26:56):
World Series should just stick to bobheads and fireworks. That was a That
was a grade A shot. There. We wonder who they're throwing shade at.
That's someone who's been here a dayor two. Uh man, Okay,
that is not a recent transplant. No, oh, here we go

(27:17):
from the twelve six Greg More Santos. Please just a little bit of your
little Ryan Bliss. But hey, same thing they're with it. Yeah,
you can't play every day, butno, can't four My father lives in
Bullhead City, Arizona, one hundredand twenty two degrees today, always talking
about the heat. Okay, no, thank you, yeah, one hundred

(27:38):
and twenty two. There's one hundredand thirty in Death Valley, which is
aptly named for this time of year. No, I'm good. I would
never I've been to fifteen it's Sacramento. In Vegas, oh no, I've
been to Vegas. It's one hundreddegrees. It's not fun. We do
know the Las Vegas and Phoenix reallyaren't supposed to exist, like how the
planet was created. Right, there'sno water there. Are you gonna give

(28:00):
us some geography? There's no waterthere. Every time we fly into Las
Vegas or Phoenix, my wife looksover, looks down at the artificially green
golf courses and says, you know, this isn't supposed to be here,
right, Really, I never thoughtof that. It's not I wonder how
people that live there would feel ifyou told him that, Like, hey,
you're the state that you live in. It's not supposed to be here,
Bud. Phoenix, man, that'sa whole I spent more time than

(28:23):
I cared to in Phoenix and Springspring trainings covering baseball and who we'll leave
it at that. That's a differentplace man. From the two five ways,
they will take Houston's soul after theAll Star right, that is on
board. That is great. Ihope that starts Santo's start. Start Bliss

(28:44):
in that series. More Bliss.Le's see what happens more Bliss please.
From the two five to three convenientto leave out. They probably missed the
playoffs in twenty twenty two with aCastillo. I love my fan fellow Mariner
fans, but we are so ofa stiff wind would blow us over.
I can't say that that is wrong. They did make the move in the

(29:07):
middle of the season with the Redsto get Castillo and then paid him the
money. They did do that, that's true. But we're talking about offensively.
I think the Mariners have a problemwith going after guys on the offensive
side of things pitching. To yourpoint, yes, they will go out
and get Castillo. That's great, but now it's time to get a strong
back, someone that can just getyou some runs outside of home runs obviously,

(29:33):
because that's one thing that Greg touchedon a lot this season. That
that's great that you guys a hittinghome runs. But it's a three to
three game last night without home runs. Just saying yeah, I mean,
just saying. They struck out eleventimes, scored eight runs, five of
them all on home runs. What'sgreat it when it works. It doesn't
work every night, No, itdoesn't. What about Springer? He will

(29:56):
be free agent in twenty seven.I'm glad you. I'm glad you read
this one. George Springer is thirtyfour. He has under contract at twenty
four million dollars a year with Torontothrough the twenty twenty six season. That's
not someone you would go pick upin the middle of the season, costing
you prospects. Now, if Toronto'sjust giving him away and then you're going
to pay you some money of thattwenty four million, maybe you already got

(30:18):
Polanco for ten and a half millionthis year and you don't want to add
that contract. Now, let's seeMarcus Robert Junior, great team friendly contract.
An Canby plays large right field holeplus play center. So who does
not have to play every day?Yes, bobashit and move JP to second
to fix that hole. Tie isn'tgood, but he would be fine if

(30:38):
he made those two moves. You'reall in, Greg, Well, he's
right about that would fix the outfieldsituation in right field. I mean they're
putting Canzone in for his back, but his defense he takes Ran McNally routes
to fly balls, I mean detourroutes. And yeah, he's not in
there for his defense, that's forsure. If Hanneger was Hitt and Ken

(31:00):
Zone wouldn't be played. Robert's onlytwenty six years old. I mean he
does play center field for the WhiteSox. You're not gonna move out Pulia
Rodriguez, but you could give Rodriguezsome DH days for instance, and play
Robert in centerfield. Yes, sir, I hear you. The White Sox
are not going to give him awayat his age, in his quality.

(31:22):
He does strike out a lot,but at his age and quality, he
will be in high demand. Sometimesyou want to guys in high demand.
I hear you is the mayor walkingaround out there yet, no idea,
but I have a feeling he'll bedependable as always. In the next he'll
join us Crosstock before his shift fromtwelve to three in Forness Next on ninety

(31:44):
three point three kJ RFM, Welcomeback, Greg Balla The News Tribune and
Christopher Kidd with you as we areevery day ten to noon and every day

(32:06):
at this time, the mayor ofMaple Valley, the Great Ian Forness,
joins us as he's doing again shorttimers in all three hours before he goes
away. Countdown is on count Iheard you talking to the beat writer for
the Lions. Sounds like he's kindof taking it. He's going to with
the kids baseball tournament. He wasdriving something. Yeah, yeah, getting

(32:28):
getting those last tournament or a coupleof tournaments in before before your your world
comes to an end until January. And he might be he's probably going till
February. That dude, Yeah,I think February. I said, I
think the Lions are going to bethe Super Bowl team from the NFC.
And it was interesting to hear thej exposition of how they built the team
and how he said for a decadethey've been focused on the offensive. Yeah.

(32:52):
Yeah, I thought that was interestingtoo. He's I'm still trying to
figure out how Sale beat them thelast couple of years. I said.
That was one of the more inexplicablegames you and I covered was last year
Week two and Detroit. You know, I yeah, Gina was good.
Yeah. No defense and funny thingis both time best games. First ya,

(33:12):
I've been at Detroit. I thinkhelp me out here. He's really
good indoors, right, aren't thenumbers that way too? Yes? Like
really good indoors? Yes, whichyou know, I mean, I guess
it makes sense quarterback throwing the ball. But I mean it's not like he's
like Russell wasn't good in the rain, Like if you look at Russell's numbers
in the rain are not good.Gino doesn't seem to be that affected by
if a boy indoors. Gino justseems to arrive. And I just I

(33:36):
I remember that game Gray going. We we shot some stuff because Barry Sanders'
statue unveiling was the Saturday night beforethe game, so we were out there
doing some stuff and places going bananasSaturday night outside and Ford Fields For people
that haven't been there, it's rightdowntown, like it's it would be like
if there was a football stadium,if Luomenfield was you know, next place

(33:58):
market, Yeah, west Lake Center. That's why west Lake Center. It'd
be like that's if the stadium wasthere. And then Sunday morning. We
got there and they are coming offthat win against the Chiefs, and the
people were lined up an hour anda half, two hours before they opened
the gates, which is still twohours before the game. It was insane.
I was like, there's no waySeattle's going to serve That crowd was

(34:22):
crazy. I was trying to explainhow loud it was. I would put
it up in my top two orthree game atmospheres I've ever covered in fifteen
years of the NFL. It was. It was awesome, absolutely flat out
awesome in every sense of the word. But uh, and even better because
the Seattle Seahawks one makes something youknow, for me selfishly makes a job
easier. So I was really happywith that. But U a great game.

(34:45):
It was great game. But yeah, that was so it was forty
the previous season and first that Ifelt like I was watching a Mike Leach
game that year, last team tohave the ball, and it was last
team to have the ball. That'sthat was Willens coming out with you.
Yes, it was, yeah, the second half. But yeah, those

(35:05):
people in Michigan to Detroit, theydeserve what they're getting right now. They
do deserve it. That's that franchisebeen so you know, woeful for so
many years, and you know theyear Cliff was there that they went,
you know, didn't win a game. And they're great fans, Like they're
great fans. I made a point. I was meeting somebody before the game
to say hi, and I madethe point of walking downstairs run on the
concourse before that game last year, and it was it was special, Like

(35:30):
I just I was. I washappy for them. I rooted for them
all year except for that game.I just it's they're a fun team.
Campbell's a blast. I you know, I don't root for a lot of
NFL teams per se, like basicallynone really, but I but that that's
the team. I kind of foundmyself rooting for it because I like the
famby family, and Detroit's a cooldowntown. It is like their Greek Town

(35:51):
is awesome, Like it's it's abouta lot. They've done a ton and
there's you know, it gets areally bad rap and I get why,
but uh, you know, youcan clean up your act and they've been
a pretty good job. And thepeople there, My parents now live there,
so I go back there a lot. Even Barry Sanders, my twin
sister is a financial planner person thatworks for a bank, big bank in
Detroit. Barry Sanders walked in oneday a couple of years ago, just

(36:15):
unassumed by himself. Unassuming. Shesaid. He was in a hoodie and
jeans and walked in and said, yeah, I'd like to make some investments
cold off the street. And shehappened to be the one that day who
was somebody already helped to respect toBarry, he did, but he had
more money to spend somewhere else.I okay, and he said, she

(36:35):
said, He said, sure,I can help you. And she recognized
right away who he was. She'snot a big sports fan, and he
said, yeah, I've got aboutfifteen million dollars I need to put in
this, this, this, andthat. Wow, it's just like cool.
Good thanks came out of the skylike an angel just arrived. Oh
I got the commission. But that'swhy. Yeah, the people Detroit deserved

(36:57):
that. Yeah they do. That'sgood. I dare say it might might
be a little harder this year thanit was the last two years to go
to that back there and play thatteam this year. Yes, as a
Game four, fourth game of theyear, Monday night game, which would
be off the hook with a lotof pops before the game. Well,
you would think, what two andoh to start the season. You'd thank
bout Knicks and Jarrett. You shouldbe, you should be. You're gonna

(37:17):
need that two and you're gonna needthat two and oh start. Ye three
and O would be really nice toget Miami Detroit. I thinkai. I
think they beat Miami with you.Yeah, I think they beat Miami.
I think they beat Miami. Ithink they're three and O going to that
game. Wow, yeah, yeah, I think there three and going to
that game. I think they're agood team. I I think they're I
think they're a lot better team thanpeople think. And I think McDonald's going

(37:38):
to take that talent on the defenseand make them better. And you got
rid of some of the riff raftfrom last year in the nonsense. I
think they're going to be a betterfootball team on defense and offensively there.
If we're doing this show somewhere elseand looking at that offense, I'd be
like, Damn ken Walker, athousand yard rusher if he's healthy. Maybe
the offense line has some question marks, but I would be afraid of watching

(37:59):
that three wide receive of a groupwith Gino. Look at this, Sonny
in forness you going on vacation orsomething? Thank it right now? Three
and L baby, three and L. I may not go four and oh,
but I'll go three and L.What do you got today? We're
gonna check in Jamie Finnick from kookfan dot comskin Joints. You know what's

(38:19):
a Mountain West Conference media day today? It's also Big twelve Media Day too.
I have a question about it's boththose media days. Do do the
Koog's and the Beams go into theWest Coast Conference tournament for basketball and all
the other sports? Yeah, okay, just like they're a full fledged member
of the conference. Yep, yep, yep. No, No, that's

(38:42):
fine. Yeah, because it's MountainWest and Big twelve media days today,
Big twelve Media Day. But MikeGundy, we didn't even talk about that.
I don't know if you're gonna getto that all with the kid that
got didn't get suspended or whatever?Right? Yeah, what are you surprised?
No? Of course not. Threethree days after Kyrie Jackson and your
teammates high school teamates die and analcohol related accident killed by drunk driver Mike,

(39:06):
and I did not even bring upMike. And you know what I'm
talking about, Chris, I might, I think I will. I just
brought up yesterday. I think theBig twelve's a month as relevant as it
gets as far as conferences go.Irrelevant. Yeah, in football, look
who's in there. It's Utah,Arizona, everybody else, anybody else,
Kansas State Western relevant, not relevant. None of those teams are relevant.
None of those teams are basketball differentstory. Let's we talked about that and

(39:29):
how dumb are they? Almost likethe pack twelves running it? Do you
know the Arizona doesn't have Kansas comingthere to Michale in basketball? They playing
once in Lawrence. Yep, realquick. Who are your blue buds that
were not in the SEC in Bigten? Uh? It was I got
the list that weren't in the SECor Big Ten? Well, they are
the blue blood nor dam is theonly one that wasn't okay from what they

(39:50):
had written, And I would tendto agree with that. Yes, I
don't think I wouldn't put Florida Stateclumbs in or Miami in there. So
not Miami, no, no,not chance. But way down the way
growing up. Yeah, but waytoo long. They've been down. Yeah,
way too long. Yeah, Iborderline wouldn't put my Notre Dame in
there, but they're still relevant,so you kind of have to. Yes,
I agree, there were a lotof people that were upset about that.

(40:12):
Dick Vane anyways, so we getthat. Jamie VNI's gonna join us
at one o'clock, cook Fan,and we'll check in with our buddy John
Londown in the Bay Area talking Ninersand Clay going to Dallas coming up a
two o'clock Clay going to Dallas.Greig Thompson and Maverick. Yeah, yeah,
we talked about that as well. We're good yeap outside that I'll see
in a couple weeks. Thanks, thanks for uving today, and then you'll
see me for seven months. I'llsee for seven months. I'll see a

(40:36):
training camp. That's the in forNeest twelve to three. Not quite every
day after his vacation here coming upnext couple weeks, but he'll be on
today twelve to three. Chris,Thank you, Chris Kid, Greg Bell,
