with a haircut, and it's theBen Arthur I know has a lot of

(01:23):
hair to style. That's going totake a while. And I bet it's
a stylist's not a barber too.And apparently he's still in the chair in
Nashville. So what Lebron James andhis buddies they all hang around the barbershop
talking. Why can't we do that? We just get him on the phone.
Anyway, he might not be thereafter that or what? So?

Your headline's brought to you by VenueKings and venue Kings dot Com.
I had to start Ajos Munos atthe end, or why the Mariners beat
San Diego Too Nothing yesterday to sweepa two game series in Southern California.
Miller threw six scoreless innings. Hehad a plus six ERA on the road

(03:10):
before that start, so that wasencouraging, andres Munos ended with two outs
in the eighth runner on struck OutPottery's All Star Jackson Profar on five straight
sliders, really interesting. They'd eventhrow him a fastball and Profar swung right
over him. But then at thebottom of the ninth Munos walked the first
two dads. Then the Potterys suddenlybegan swinging again and that was to the

(03:32):
benefit of the Mariners. Into Munos. Munos got a ground out, struck
out rookie Jackson Merrill and another slider, and he got David Peralta hit into
a soft line drive. Shortstop JPCrawford raced to his left behind second base
of cat It before he hit theground, so instead of a tying single,
it was the third out in TheMariners win a series for the first
time since mid June, in seventhseries since they had won one. But

(03:57):
Houston won again, so the Marinerslead remained two games of trash cans atop
the American League West. The Marinerstook a bus up by five after yesterday's
games. They're at Anaheim right nowfor a four game series that begins tonight
against the last placed Angels. LuisCastillo is on the mound tonight for the
MS. That's a six thirty starton Roots Sports from Anaheim speaking of the
trash cans, Houston seeking a tradefor a new first basement. That's according

(04:19):
to Jim Boden, former Major LeagueBaseball GM now with CBS Sports the Athletic
MLB Radio. He's been on theshow with us. He's been on the
show a couple times with others hereat KJR. Jim Bowden says that Houston
has been talking, or at leasttargeting, to try to acquire Pete Alonzo

(04:40):
from the Mats, Christian Walker fromthe Diamondbacks, or Cody Bellinger from the
Cubs, all of whom have beenmentioned as possible Mariners targets. The NBA
agreed to new media rights dal iseleven years seventy six billion with the b
dollars with ESPN, ABC, NBC, and Amazon Prime, but now TNT
Sports years with the network. It'sa five day window to match. Joe

(05:02):
Flinn of The Wall Street Journal toldus last segment, or about a half
hour now ago, that he thinksit's going to go. NBA owners approve
it here the next couple of days. Early next week, TNT Turner Sports,
Warner Brothers Discovery gets a chance tomatch the NBC, Amazon portion of
the new deal and that by theend of next week or perhaps two weeks,

(05:24):
the deal will be done. Theywant to get it done before the
Olympics. Joe Flynn of The WallStreet Journal tells us why is all this
matter to Seattle. Adam Silver ison record saying once the media rights deals
are done in the NBA, theleague wi turn its attention to expansion,
and that Seattle and Las Vegas arekeenly interesting to the league to expand to
storm Lass At home of w NBAchampion Las Vegas Aces yesterday eighty four seventy

(05:48):
nine, England beat the Netherlands twoto one, really late and stop in
regular time. Alie Watkins off thebench in a stroke of genius moved by
Southgate through battled coach of England.England plays Spain Sunday in Berlin for the
Euros title. When Copa America Colombiabeat Uruguay despite playing the entire second half

(06:08):
with only ten men. So it'sgoing to be Colombia against Leone MSLI and
Argentina Sunday in Copa America's final inMiami. The US men's soccer team has
fired coach Greg Burholter after the Americanshistorically bad exit from Copa America after they
left after the group stage without advancingto a knockout round. Speculation on whom
the coach may be next starts withJurgen Klopp, former Premiership champion coach of

(06:33):
manager of Liverpool in England. JamalAdams has signed a one year dealer's agreed
to sign off and it's actually doneyet. Agreed to sign a one year
deal with the Tennessee Titans. Youremember Jamal Adams. Seahawks cut him this
spring after four tumultuous, polarizing yearsin Seattle, to say the least seventy
million dollar contract the Seahawks had givenhim. Well, now he gets a

(06:56):
one year deal, probably very incentiveladen, probably not much about the league
minimum for veterans with the Tennessee Titans. Here to talk about it Off the
barber's chair or the stylist chair?Which is it? Ben Arthur, our
good friend, former Seas beat writerfor the Seattle PI, now of Fox
Sports from Nashville, Tennessee. Okay, Ben, level with us, was
that a stylist or a barber?It was a barber. It was a

(07:20):
barb They got me out. Yeah, they got me out just in the
nick of time. But he's gonnahear from you. Greg. It has
thanks Ben for joining us. EspreshlyShorn Ben Arthur Ben, what is your
reaction to Jamal Adams and how hemight fit in Tennessee. Yeah, I
mean, I think from the Titansperspective, I mean, they for as

(07:43):
many moves as they've made, rightand they were definitely one of the most
active teams in free agency. Theymade a lot of headlines for that.
But they they broke from the offseason program still needing a lot of depth
fat safety, and so I didn'treally know what that would look like.
But but I knew kind of leadinginto training camp or early in training camp,

(08:05):
but they would they would make amove, and I think from the
Titans perspective, like this move makesmakes a lot of sense for them,
not only because of the depth, but but I think you look at what
Jamal Adams can be when when he'shealthy, just in terms of, uh,
what he can do as as ablitzer just roaming around the line of

(08:28):
scrimmage, and that's what Denard Wilson, the new Titans DC wants, and
obviously they have their connection from whenthey were with the Jets together. That's
when Jamal Adams was at his best. And uh, you know, Denard
is bringing to Tennessee a scheme that'sgoing to be very aggressive. They're going
to have a lot of pressure packages. They're going to blitz a lot.

(08:50):
Uh. They want to be ableto confuse opposing offenses with different looks and
and and if Jamal can stay healthy, that's a big if, right And
and we know kind of tumultuous timehe had in Seattle, you know,
for for the beginning of it,which I was there in Seattle for,
so you don't know what you're gettingthere. But if he is available,
he could be of a tremendous helpto this Titans defense. And I think

(09:15):
from a scheme point, as Isaid, he fits a lot. So
I guess we'll kind of see howit shakes out. They have a Moni
Hooker, they have Elijah Moulden, they have Mike Brown. Where do you
see Adam starting or is that stillthe be determined? Yeah, I think
that's still to be determined right nowthat the starter is Elijah Moulden, who

(09:37):
a lot of the who a lotof your listeners will will know. Of
course, you know, being hestart at you dub he's kind of the
starter alongside the money Hooker right now. But Jamal, I think from an
upside standpoint, if he's healthy onceagain, like I think he could he
ideally he would be that guy andyou could push Elijah Moulden to like that

(10:00):
number three spot, have him kindof like specialize in those kind of sub
package roles, which I think honestlythat you would be best in just giving
his skill set and he plays alot of nickel too, so so,
but but yeah, it kind ofdepends like, Okay, like what is
Jamal? What is his health?Right? He's missed so much time over

(10:20):
the last several years, like whatyou don't quite know what you're getting.
But if he could prove that availability, I think he could be the starter
alongside of money Hooker for the Titans. That's the voice of Ben Arthur Fox
Sports. You can read the sportsat the reader's work at the Fox Sports
app. He's joining us from Nashville. He covers the AFC South and specifically

(10:41):
the Titans for Fox Sports. Usedto be the Seahawks beat writer Seattle Pi
at the He left right at thebeginning of Jamal Adams' tenure here after the
trade from the New York Jets fortwo first round picks. Ben, I'm
curious who is the leader on thatdefense and do you see them being accepting
of Jamal Adam just because of howthings kind of ended in Seattle, there

(11:03):
might be a little huh, thisis who you guys are bringing in.
But although when he's healthy, asyou mentioned, Ben, he can go
out there on ball. Yeah.I think the answer your first question,
Chris, the leader is undoubtedly JeffreySimmons. He's one of the He's probably
a top three defensive tackle in theNFL, and he just rereaks havoc inside.

(11:24):
I mean, he's orderline, unblockableat times for guards, interior offensive
lineman. So he's been the guy, especially since Kevin Byerd, who's kind
of like their longtime stalwart in theback end, like playing safety. Like
as soon as he left, itbecame Jets defense. So he's really the

(11:46):
leader. Will he fit? Imean, I think the Titans will make
it work again. He has thatrelationship with Denard Wilson, the new Titans
defensive coordinator. That's when Jamal wasat his best when he was with the
Jets, and so I think DenardWilson will know how to hit the right
buttons. And this is a reallyveteran Titans defense in certain spots. Right,

(12:13):
you have Jeffrey Simmons, but youalso brought a chadob A Woozier who's
been too Super Bowl with the Bengals. You brought in Lugerious Sneid who's won
a Super Bowl, who's won multipleSuper Bowls with the Chiefs, and so
they have this is this defense haskind of been changing and the scheme has
been changing, but they do havea lot of veteran players, particularly in

(12:37):
the secondary. That's where the strengthof this defense is going to be.
And so I don't foresee Jamal Adamslike being an issue. I think with
the guys they have in place,he'll kind of have to stand in line.
He'll he'll kind of have to bekept in He'll have to keep himself
in check, just because I thinkof the leadership that they have on the

(13:00):
back end. So I don't thinkthat would be an issue. Careful,
Ben, you don't think, Ben, you don't think Jamal is going to
be an issue? Famous last wordsaround here. Yeah, Yeah, I've
ended today you don't. Yeah, you can never know. But Ben,
you were here at the Starling. You mentioned you were here when Adams arrived,
and the Seahawks that first year usedhim really like a unicorn, playing

(13:24):
a safety plan as a linebacker planon the line of scrimmage, blitzing sometimes
a third or fourth of the time, nine and a half sacks a record
for defensive backs in the NFL thatfirst season with Seattle. Then you mentioned
the injuries, and when he returnedfrom injury, he became a post safety
because Pete Carroll didn't trust his cornerbacksat the time to play press coverage and

(13:46):
he needed safeties over the top andbracket coverage. How do you think Denard
Wilson, you mentioned how he wouldlike to have a safety can move around.
Do you see Jamal Adams having thatfirst year Seattle role of being a
line of scrimmage linebackers sally blitzing hellof all a time or do you think
he might have to become a coverman in Tennessee too. Yeah, yeah,

(14:07):
I kind of envisioned that that firstyear, Like you said, Gregan
in Seattle, where he was glitzing, he's basically a linebacker roaming around the
line of scrimmage, because that's howhe was used with the Jets, right
and that's when he was with theNard Wilson and so I think at this
point we all have a pretty clearidea of what Jamal adams trants and weaknesses

(14:31):
are and if you're having to usehim in coverage, that's not a recipe
for success. And I think inthe Titans case, they have really good
cover guys. I mean, Italked about a Woozier and Sneid, but
they also have Roger McCreery. Like, between those three they have a case
as kind of a top three cornerbackroom in the NFL. They have some

(14:56):
guys who can really cover it,and so they're not going to be asking
him to do that. And atthe safety spot, I think Amani Hooker
and Elijah Molden more so fit thatrole. I think what they're kind of
expecting from Jamal is to kind ofbe what he was that first year in
Seattle, what he was when hewas a star with the Jets, sticking

(15:20):
around the line of scrimmage, kindof confusing teams with kind of his his
alignment and blitzing and and all that. So I would expect for that to
be his primary role with the Titans. Last one for me. August fourteen
and the fifteenth, the Seahawks arein Nashville for a little joint practice.
I will be there, Ben,You're gonna be there. It's gonna be

(15:41):
much sea action. Yes, itwill be mussy. That will that will
be a lot of fun. Iwas, yeah, that that should be
a lot of fun. I can'twait for that. So with that being
said, I'm guessing you will. You're gonna be ready to go when DK
and Jamal are going at it inpractice, because I can only imagine there's
gonna be five between those two. Both guys love to talk. Absolutely absolutely,

(16:06):
It's yeah, it's gonna be There'sgonna be some feelings on on both
sides for sure, and and I'mjust gonna hope I could get some of
it on on tape. So that'skind of what my role will be in
all that. Then, the Titansare going through a regime change, and
the Seahawks of course have a newcoach and Mike McDonald out here in brand

(16:27):
new regime, all new systems. How new is it in Tennessee? Where
are they in the learning process? And right now after rotates in mini camps,
Yeah, I mean they're yeah,Like like you said, it's it's
completely different here in Tennessee. Theway Mike Rabel was running the ship is

(16:47):
completely different than how Brian Callahan isdoing it with with Mike Rabel is very
much uh, kind of defensive ladrun game like Derek Henry, right,
but now it's they've completely transformed intoa pass first We're gonna pass on first
and second down. What we're gonnamake sure Will Levis is getting the ball

(17:12):
to our playmakers. And historically kindof the Titan strength defensively has kind of
been in the trenches getting pressure, but now it's in the back end.
As I was kind of talking aboutwhen we were discussing Jamal Adams, It's
that's where their strength is now,in the secondary. And so it's kind

(17:34):
of been a one eighty or threesixty shift. From all indications, it's
gone smoothly to this point. Justfrom my vantage point, it just seems
like people are around the Titans arelast uptight, if that kind of makes
sense. That Mike Rabel's demeanor, the way he carried himself like he's very

(17:57):
much an alpha person now right likeformer NFL linebacker, very commanding presence.
It's kind of my way or thehighway. And Brian Callahan, Brian Callahan
is more laid back, I think, more player, a little more player
friendly. Like Will Levis has evenmentioned how like with Callahan, it's the

(18:19):
first time he has a coach thatfeels like a friend. And so that's
definitely a shift here in Nashville. And so we'll kind of see how it
pans out, but it's been onehundred percent different here and and they're going
to lean more on analytics more.It was definitely more so kind of like

(18:41):
the old school mentality mantra with withMike Rabel as the coach and so pretty
much every way that you can imaginea franchise being different, like that's kind
of what it is now for theTitans. And then with Derrick Henry two
being gone, they're not going tobe running the ball thirty times a game.

(19:04):
They have two running backs now,and Tony Pollard and Tasjay Spears who
fit kind of like that pass firstmold. They're more of their backs who
are kind of smaller, shiftier, who can also catch the ball out of
the backfield. And so so yeah, it's going to be completely different here

(19:25):
for the Titans. Ben Arthur, former Seahawks beat rather the Seattle PI now
Fox Sports in Nashville, Tennessee coversthe AFC South and the Tennessee Titans.
Thanks for joining us, Ben,I will see you in a month in
Nashville for about four days. Sayhello to your head coach's dad for me,
Bill Callahan. I covered him asthe Raider beat writer when he was
the head coach of Super Bowl coachfor the Raiders. I'll see in a

(19:47):
month. But thanks a lot.Sounds good. Greg. Appreciate you,
guys, Appreciate you. See youagain in a month, Thanks Ben,
Ben Arthur, right off the barber'schair, right onto the Beacon Plumbing hotline
here on ninety three point three kJRFM. He says, Jamal Adams has
a chance to start first year here, well the only year he's under contract
with Tennessee here in the next trainingcamp. So there's gonna be a lot

(20:08):
of stake for him practicing against theSeahawks. He's trying to win a job,
and Ben Arthur thinks that they willuse him like he used the Seahawks
used him his first year, heblits ninety eight times that year, career
high according to Pro Football Reference. That first season twenty twenty with Pete Carroll
and the Seahawks, he had nineand a half sacks. Again, that
was a record for defensive becks inthe NFL for a season. Then came

(20:30):
the injuries and he never came closeto blitzing that much again. And he
says that Ar Wilson, the newoffensive defensive coordinator for Tennessee, is going
to employ him much like Pete Carrolldid in twenty twenty. So now if
he can stay healthy, he's gota chance to earn himself another bigger contract.
That's a big if we'll see JamalAdams with the Seahawks Titans joint practices

(20:52):
August fourteen and fifteen, I willbe there in Nashville. I'll be bringing
it to you for KJR and writingit for the Newstribute dot Com. Four
nine four five one tell them more, dude. Text line You're reaction to
Jamal Adams Tennessee Titans possible starter forthem and about the Seahawks legacy of Jamal
Adams. His legacy here in Seattleis polarizing to say the least four nine

(21:15):
four to five one. Also yourinput on what we talked about with Joe
Fuinn of The Wall Street Journal aboutthe NBA media rights deals, the precursor
to the Sonics returning to Seattle, which could happen for the October twenty six
for the twenty twenty six twenty sevenNBA season. We can back. We'll
read your text next on ninety threepoint three KJRFMO. This is the part

(21:41):
of the show that I say,if you're gonna go to the iHeartRadio app,
don't listen to that guy. Youcan get it. You can't get
away from him. Listen to usGreg Best Show with Christopher Kidd list the
Infernest show is Dave Softy Maher andDick Faine with Chuckman Buck in the morning.
Lots of options there on the iHeartRadioapp. You know what that music
means? Means Boogie Nights is aboutto play on your radio, or it's

(22:03):
time to read tell them we'll dotext line on four nine five one.
We'll go with the ladder again todayBoogie Knights showing on nineteen point three kJ
FM. Come down to the station. I wonder how your listenership would be
for that, probably really bad.Starting things off from the two O six,
Ben drops in Jamal Adams, goodriddance and don't let the door hit

(22:25):
you where the Good Lord split you? Hey man, I get it.
From the three to six, Oh, Jamal Adams earned the nickname mister Glass
while he was in Seattle. Goodriddance On the two O six, Adams
will be irrelevant in Tennessee, willbring nothing to the table. We've had
this discussion before, but I thinkJamal Adams and Alex Rodriguez might be the

(22:45):
two most reviled athletes in Seattle sportshistory. I can't think of two others
that were more disliked. Well, especially when Jamal did what he did after
this season that that it was duringthe season. Next use me that was
icing on November. Yeah, myapologies. Had he not done that,

(23:06):
yeah, I mean he would havebeen liked, but it wouldn't have got
to We tried, man, Wetried. We went to his locker and
said, well after Pete Carroll thensaid he'll apologize. That was the craziest
part. I thought you talked tohim. I went to his locker and
I said, well, he said, you want to clarify this. No,
when they go low, I golower. Okay, Cowboys, didn't

(23:29):
you just talk to Pete? Didn'tPete just tell you to apologize and everything
will be all good and you okay, you clearly don't want to play here.
There's been a handful of times inmy twenty plus years of this sports
trading that I've walked away from aninterview shaking my head, not quite sure.
You're probably laughing at that point.I think Gregor is probably chuckling,
like this is it. I wasn'tlaughing because if someone would after my wife

(23:49):
like that, I would be writingobjectively. I can tell you that,
yeah, fun times all right fromthe seven away. Please do not waste
Seahawks fans time by talking about JamalAdams. Go Seahawks. We are sorry,
but it was breaking news. Itis news that he is not with

(24:11):
signing with the Tennessee Titans. Andagain next of it the Seahawks. And
in four weeks, I mean it'snot gonna be that long from now.
No, it's only two weeks inthe training camp that they're going to Tennessee,
and the Seahawks and Titans are gonnahave two joint practices in Nashville before
their preseason game there August seventeenth.I will be there for the news tribute
in kJ R telling you all aboutDK Metcalf and Jamal Adams going at it.

(24:36):
This is from go ahead. Iwas gonna say, like you said,
those joint practice have fights anyway.Yeah, so now that's guaranteed.
Now you just bring in the teamthat fired you, and oh it's gonna
be fireworks from Marcus out of thetwo o six. I'm so excited for
NCAA to come back this year.I go shooting a lot, Greg,
and I can honestly say video gameversions make you better. I find my

(24:56):
eye catching the red dot in reallife quicker. Now that is a new
one. I don't know what tosay because I've I've only shot a gun
maybe twice, and I've never usedanything bigger than a handgun a pistol.
So wow, all right, Greg, maybe should get on some games and
get that get that aim a littlebetter. When the last time you shot

(25:18):
a rifle a gun, has itbeen years? Nineteen ninety eight? Ohat
year in the last year in thearmy. All right, there it is.
I made a decision. You knowwhat, I'm not going to own
a gun because I have kids inmy house. I'm gonna have kids,
babies in my house, and that'smy wife and messap makes sense. Duneton
and Dragons, Do you remember thatconversation we had, Greg Well, I
was joking. I see the peoplethat textl have fired up. I knew

(25:41):
that was a board game. Oh, I just thought they've turned everything into
a video game. So I said, it is not a video game too.
The text line, let us know, Dungeons and Dragons again is not
a video game. In the fourto two five, it's played with about
seven different kind of dice. Iknow I didn't know, Greg, alright
for me, I know it's predatingyou. I've gotten Oh, now you're
making it. I was just Iwas just saying, but never mind,
doesn't matter what I'm saying. Ijust wondered if they turned out into a

(26:03):
video game, like to do everythingelse. I mean, Monopoly is a
video game. It is all rightthere, we have it from the two
five to three. Keith drops in. Come on, mister Bell, I'm
older than you and can still slingthe sticks with the best. You don't
like that, Greg, you don'tknow can't do video games. Slinging the
sticks. Oh that's just a fancyway of saying I play video games.
Do you still have joysticks in somegames? Yes? Really yes. For

(26:29):
example, if you wanted to playKnee for Speed or a racing game,
you could get all the bells andwhistles if you wanted to do that,
but you have to buy a separateconsole. No, you could have the
console, you have to buy aseparate set. So for joystick like the
Atari joysticks, which one sticks stickingup off of a button thing. Yeah,
if I'm not mistaken. If I'mnot mistaken, I will say that

(26:53):
much. Let's see what else doyou got? I know, we talked
about the Mariners today. How fardo we have to go back to see
any of that? Because all thesetext or names all right? Here we
go from the four two five.Unfortunately, Maren's not be trading for anyone
worth a crap, small broken recordevery year. Oh that's fun. Two
oh six? Is Mariner's making goodprogress toward a half season goal? I
believe in the players. For somereason, I'm doubting the front office.

(27:15):
I can't figure out why. Ohyears and years of I don't know,
decades. Okay, you're right decadesis the better word. Let's see here,
great mister four innings on the moundtomorrow essentially a bullpen day from the
two five, three. Well, now Wu has been injured. I mean
it's not like he's and when hehas comeback, they've limited his pitches and

(27:37):
rightly so. So it's not quitefair to claim mister four inning guy.
I mean, bottom line is he'snot lasting in games, but he's been
hurt. But to his point, tomorrow would not be a night you would
think your starter is going to getinto the seventh inning. Also, and
were returning off the shout out toKelly. He did call in, Oh
yeah, he got one hundred dollars. Yeah, so I appreciate you,

(27:59):
Kelly for this. Good Joe Kelly, you were all set. And our
street continues. Greg, we areon the money giving away money. I
know. I think we've only inthe Whole Time Show one time, just
once, and it was I don'tknow what happened. Screw that person.
I forget your name, but youknow who you are. Probably from the
four to two five there was ashort window in the nineties where Seattle cared
about basketball. Outside of that,no one went to games. That's the

(28:22):
biggest It's not true. That's afactually incorrect statement, ain't Greg. Let
me finish, man, I'm sorry, but to say the Sonics were only
supported for a couple of years inthe nineties is not true. Not true.
They played in the Kingdom with fortyplus thousand people, They played in
the nineteen seventy eight to seventy nineNBA champions, won a world title.
Just because you weren't born then doesn'tmean it didn't happen. Oh, it's

(28:45):
just not true. Greg said, take that. There are a lot of
Seattle fans who are thirty and underwho think the Sonics were not supported here.
False. Absolutely false. They werehere before the Seahawks. They were
here before the Mariners. They werehere as the pilots left and came back
as the Mariners. They have we'retalking back to the sixties. Man.

(29:08):
That's that's a false narrative. Thatis incorrect. The Sonics are a institution
here, period, end of story. They got they were robbed. The
city was stupid for giving them aforty five million dollar out with Clay Bennett
and the Oklahoma City owners. Thatfranchise is now worth billions with a Bee

(29:29):
and Seattle gave them an out fromthe contract. From the least, it's
a key arena. That two yearplaying more two more years may have gotten
a local owner to keep the Sonicshere and they would have never left,
and no one would be saying thatthe Sonics were only supported for a couple
of years in the nineties. That'sjust not true. All right, Sorry,
I just got to I don't wantto put falsehoods out on the air.

(29:49):
It's not true. All right, greg, Here we go. I
just pre ordered the NCAA football gamefor my twelve year old son from the
two os. There you go,that's more like it. Let's see Jeremy
Jeremy four two five Adams will behurt before the joint practice. I am
alrighty, then I think we endedon that. I don't know how you

(30:11):
feel good. Lewis will not bemissed. To six says I'm happy he's
gone. Worst trade ever, Yes, you have company fit on that two
O six. Asking chances of seeingSantos tonight, I think pretty large if
the game's close, especially Daniel Kramertold us earlier this week. Gregory Santos
be debuting two days ago. Nowfor the Mariners. The day he's going

(30:33):
into a primary setup role. He'snot gonna get ramped. Let's ease him
into it. So if the game'sclose tonight, which most Mariner games are.
They now they weren't going to goback to back with Santos Tuesday and
Wednesday, which is why Stannik camein. And by the way, we
mentioned this a couple of times Stannikhas been coome ineffective in a hurry.
He had like eleven appearances a roadoutgiving up a run. Now he gives

(30:55):
up a run every time he goesout there. Yeah, enter Santos,
please no more. Mayor he's onvacation. Mayor's on staycation vacation. So
when we come back, we cando more of these texts while we're at
it. Keep sending them there. It's only going to get better. But
yeah, we can talk about theSonics legacy here in Seattle. We can

(31:17):
talk about what we learned today aboutthe NBA meteorites deal. We laid out
the process of how expansion will work. Jamal Adams to the Tennessee Titans,
the Mariners two game lead, tryingto hold onto it into the weekend before
the all star break there and Anaheim. We'll finish the show next ninety three
point three KJRFM, Welcome Back, ninety three point three kJ r FM.

(31:55):
Greg Bell of the News Tribune andChristopher Kidd with you. You know,
I think we turned this segment intoa little history lesson for those of you
who either weren't in Seattle, arenot old enough to know, or just
want to throw out that the Sonicswere not supported here in Seattle. I
feel bath for reading that text. Now, well, it's good. This
is a chance to educate some people. Nineteen sixty seven, the Sonics were

(32:20):
an expansion team in the NBA.They played in the Seattle Center Coliseum and
it's the site of the current ClimatePledge Arena, same location in that time.
At about a decade later, theybecame an NBA powerhouse that went to
consecutive NBA Championship Series, the finalsthey won in nineteen seventy nine over the
Washington Bullets. When they became anNBA Championship type team, they played some

(32:45):
select games in the Kingdome, andthen they started playing entire seasons in the
Kingdome. By nineteen seventy eight, forty thousand people would go into the Kingdome
to watch the Sonics play. No, it wasn't a great basketball venue,
of course, but they moved tothe Kingdome not because nobody was watching them.

(33:05):
It's because too many people wanted togo to the games. That's how
they moved out of Seattle Center inthe seventies to play in the New Dome
Stadium down in Soto. Then theymoved back to the Coliseum in nineteen eighty
five, out of the Kingdom toback to the center called Seattle Centers Coliseum.
They were there until nineteen ninety four. I came to Seattle as a
second lieutenant, just graduated from WestPoint, was assigned to Fort Lewis,

(33:30):
and in nineteen ninety four, inthe winter of ninety four was the last
year, the last season the Sonicswere in the old Coliseum. I went
to a Knicks Sonics game on aSaturday night. I just went up and
I wanted to see this Sean Kempguy. I'd seen highlights of him and
reading a story in the paper abouthow he was just this machine dunking on
everybody in a fantastic show. SoI want to see it. So I

(33:52):
came up on a Saturday night inthe rain in January and bought a ticket
outside in a scout. I thinkI paid like fifteen bucks, and I
sat up about ten rows off ofright behind the Sonics bench. And I
will never forget Sean Kemp flying throughthe air and getting a lob passed and
absolutely bringing the house down. Ithought the roof of the old Seattle Center

(34:15):
Coliseum, which was sold out,was going to come down. I mean
it was. I never saw abasketball player jump that high and slam the
ball that violently. The place wentnuts time out and they were screaming and
yelling and dancing. Well. Bynineteen ninety six, they had moved into
ky Arena, the renovated Seattle CenterColiseum. What did they do in ninety

(34:37):
four ninety five They went to theTacoma Dome. I don't know people realize
this. They played a season inthe Tacomadome. They sold out the Tacoma
Dome twenty plus thousand people most nights. They were there for one season.
While Kiarina was being Center Colisseum wasbecoming ki Aina, I bought myself and

(35:00):
my two lieutenant roommates and another lieutenantfriend or four second lieutenants from Fort Lewis
bought season tickets that year from adoctor up on Pill Hill, Capitol Hill
who didn't want to drive from Seattleto Tacoma. I don't blame them,
so instead of giving up the seasontickets, he said, I'll sell my
season tickets for one year. Alot of people in Seattle did that,
and a lot of South Sound PierceCounty people got to see the Sonics in

(35:20):
person. That year we bought seasontickets. The four of us went in
on two season tickets and I gotto see the entire season of the Sonics
at the Tacomadome. The wood roofshook during Sonics home games. It shuck.
I was there for it. Jordan, the Knicks with Starks and Mason

(35:44):
and Patrick Ewing, Magic, KareemAbdul Jabbar, the end of that run
with the Lakers. It was rightat the end of that run and the
Lakers actually had started going down.So we had NBA Finals stick. Because
when you buy, when you haveseason tickets, as most fans know,
or if you have season tickets listing, you know when they reached the postseason,
you get the entire postseason's tickets upfront. You buy them all and

(36:08):
then if they don't play those games, you get refunded. At least that's
how it worked then. I thinkit works the same way. So and
back then they printed tickets, noneof this phone and electronic. So the
Sonics, we bought our playoff ticketslike the season tickets. Holders had to
write to and the Sonics sent usa book of playoff tickets for the ninety

(36:28):
four ninety five seed. This wasspring in ninety five. They sent us
the NBA Finals tickets we frame.I still have the framed Sonics nineteen ninety
five NBA Finals tickets for the gamesthat would have been in the Comodome.
What happened They lost in the firstround of the Lakers lights went out into
Comodome in one of the games. We couldn't believe it. Had we were
holding tickets to the NBA Finals forthe number one seed in the maybe they

(36:51):
were number two that year. Thenthe following year they lost to Denver as
a one seed in the upset ofthe eight versus one. I think they
were two and the Lakers were seven. Remember and this was like Elden Campbell
Lakers. This wasn't magic. KareemLakers Lakers beat the Sonics in round one.
We rip up all our tickets savethe one I framed of the NBA
Finals to the Coma Dome that neverhappened. Then they go back to Key

(37:14):
Arena for the ninety five ninety sixseason. Ninety six they play the Chicago
Bulls and Michael Jordan Place was offthe hook this town the way the people
are about Seahawks when the Mariners arerolling in two thousand and one, That's
how the town was in ninety sixNBA Finals for the Sonics and Michael Jordan
the Bulls. Just because you weren'there didn't mean it did happen. It

(37:36):
happened. Then Ky Arena suddenly becomesobsolete, and I get it. There
were narrow concourses, but the mainthing was the NBA and Sonics owners,
starting with Howard Schultz, didn't likethat Ky Arena didn't print money like a
lot of new NBA arenas did.It didn't have the luxury suites. It
had a very steep garage for loadingdock down to the level that would concerts

(38:00):
and other events you could put inthere that the Sonics and other tenants and
the city could have profited from concertsand things started going to the Tacoma to
Owme instead of ky Arena because KIArena's remodeled loading ramp was too steep to
get the trucks in and out ofall kinds of issues. That and player
parking and fan parking and all that, and the Sonics in the city weren't

(38:22):
making money compared to other NBA cities. And that's how ky Arena became obsolete
to the NBA. And that's howKey Arena was no longer suitable for an
NBA team, And that's how HowardSchultz sold it to the carpetbaggers in Oklahoma
City, who then extorted you mightas well say, the city of Seattle,
and struck a forty five million dollarsdeal to get out of their lease
in a lawsuit they were about tolose the morning of the judge about to

(38:45):
rule against the Clay Bennett and hisOklahoma City owners. That would have kept
this team in Seattle for two moreyears, which all of us who covered
that trial were covering the team attime will tell you, would likely have
resulted in a local owner buying itfrom Ben who failed in getting him to
Oklahoma, so he would have soldhim, the team would have never left.
All of that happened before they becamethe Oklahoma City Thunder. Now,

(39:08):
I just went to this long diatribeto try to educate this section of people.
And it's more than one Texter thatthink the Sonics weren't supported except for
the year they went to the finalsagainst Michael Jordan the Bulls in ninety six.
That's why people want the Sonics backin Seattle. That's why the NBA
has been an institution here. That'swhy the Sonics predate the Seahawks, the

(39:31):
Mariners. They are like the Huskiesinstitutions in this town. Don't let anyone
tell you any differently. That's whypeople want the Seattle SuperSonics to come back.
It could happen as soon as Octobertwenty twenty six, now that the
NBA is about to close its mediarights deal. All right, is that
a high enough soapbox? I mean, I'm just saying Ian Fornessa's not here.

(39:58):
So Mark James is filling in.He's done it before in the past
from k on KJR, and he'sgoing to be hosting the next three hours
twelve to three. Greg Bell ofThe News Tribute and Christopher, thanks for
listening. We'll do it again tomorrow. In ninety three point three KJRFM
