The Mariners got eliminated yesterday without doing anything. They were
off coming back from Houston. They needed Kansas City or
Detroit to lose out in the final four games, and
(01:38):
the Royals and Tigers both won the game yesterday afternoon.
So that's that for the Mariners, twenty second time in
twenty three years they missed the playoffs. What forty six
out of forty eight now now forty five out of
forty eight because they made the playoffs three times ninety
five two thousand and one. Twenty twenty two final three
(01:59):
game the season for the MS tonight Sunday through tonight
through Sunday at Oakland, excuse me at the yard and
so to Oakland had their last home game and called
same history yesterday. What a sad, bittersweet scene that was.
The Seahawks got their best site yet. About Kenneth Walker,
he was on the field yesterday practicing. The lead back
is on track. It appears to play Monday night in Detroit.
(02:21):
I'd be the first time he played in the fourth
quarter of the opener September eighth against Denver. Some motivation
Walker might want to play in Detroit. He went to
college ninety miles west of Detroit at Michigan State and
East Lansing. Three of the Sea York's four starting outside
linebacker inside linebackers miss practice week. Sidelinebacker Jerome Baker still
(02:44):
sidelined by the hamstring injury that caused in the mist
the Miami game last weekend. Chen and Wosh had come
back to practice for the first time in a month
on Wednesday with that sprain knee in the preseason finale
getting cut block with Cleveland's Wie Teller, But then Wosa
was not on the field yesterday, so it'll be interesting
to see if he gets the practice today. Boy Maffe
missed practice with his soornee he's had for a couple
(03:04):
of weeks. Now. He missed practices last week and then
still played and had his third sack of the season
against the Dolphins. Dallas beat the New York Giants twenty
to fifteen last night to get the Cowboys to two
and two. Maybe the chicken littles in Dallas can quiet
down for a few days. Army team forty two to
fourteen over Temple. They're now four to ozho Army is
(03:25):
for only the third time in twenty eight years. That's
another win for our factor. Fiction. Just stick with us
on Army and you're probably gonna be good to go
three and one at Huskies at Rutgers today again five o'clock,
one pm pregame show with Dave Softy Mauller and the
Husky Honks, five pm kick off with Tony castri Cone
KAM Cleveland here on ninety three point three KJRFM KRACK
and play their first home preseason game tonight seven pm
(03:48):
versus Vancouver at Climate Pledge Arena on the nine to
fifty AM side, and then tomorrow they play at Edmonton
six pm on the nine to fifty AM DJR sister station,
The Sounders, host of Houston Dynamo to come tomorrow seven
thirty at the State even Soto Jackson Feltz's pregame show
seven o'clock here on ninety three point three KJRFM and
the three and one excuse me four and oh I
(04:10):
mean to short him. Washington State Cougars because they beat
the Huskies are playing at two and one twenty fifth
rank Boise State seven pm kickoff tomorrow in the Blue
Turf in Idaho and joining us now to talk about
that and so much more with Washington State and Pack
twelve athletics right now, Sam Taylor, the Lewiston Tribune, Washington
State Beat right are joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Sam, Hello, welcome to the show.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Hey Greg us a going thanks having me on.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
You're welcome and it's good to have you. Last time
I saw you, you and I were dining at the
Breakfast Club on Labor Day weekend in Moscow, Idaho. One
of the best, one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.
That was an amazing deal. Sam. First of all, before
we even get to the Boise State, tell us about
the experience of covering the double overtime win last Friday
(04:59):
night against San Jose State. The back and forth and
as a beat writer trying to write running game stories
and all of that. What was that experience like?
Speaker 5 (05:07):
It was pretty wild? Well, well, lie, I'm new to
this whole beat writing thing. Graduated in May from the
Merlow College, and so that was probably the best test yet.
I've running right up to deadline just kind of writing
about like four different things. And then because I mean,
but that's Cougar football, you know, it's back and forth.
It's you know, reminded, reminded me of the UCLA game
(05:29):
that they lost in twenty nineteen and the last time
Washington State met Boys. You stay at triple overtime game,
It's it's just pretty insane. And so just to see
the Coubes, you know, be up by fourteen, down by fourteen,
take the lead, lose the lead in the last minute,
and then replaced take their game tying field goal, and
then overtime, they trade interceptions, trade touchdowns, it comes down
(05:50):
to the two point conversion attempt and John Mattier makes
it and then Quinn Ross and the Cougar defense just
break the pocket and then pandemonium on the police. But
you know, what more can you ask for? It's pretty
pretty crazy.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
So take to the listeners of those who don't know
how this works. Take us through how you how you
wrote that? Were you writing from the bottom up? Were
you writing leads and then rewriting, And did you have
alternate screens depending on whether they were gonna win or
lose at the end? Tell us how the mechanics of
that went.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
Yeah, so I kind of there were some some elements
of the game. I'm like, I'm running a play, a
running play by play. Not everything goes into the story,
but but some things go into the story. And so
I kind of had the body of the story of
like how they got to that point written more or
less through halftime and such, and so then it came
down to just kind of writing several different leads, one
(06:41):
if they won, one if they lost, and kind of
with all those details, and then just there was a
lot of like frantic typing around eleven thirty though, because
all that all changed really fast.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
If I had a penny for every time I've done
that in twenty five years.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
It's hechnic for sure.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
Yeah. Just a tip as you read game stories I
get running game stories online, notice how much play by
play there is in the first half or the first
three quarters and then how it just thrown together at
the top until you have a chance to go read again.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
This is Sam Taylor, WSH beat writer the.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Lewiston Tribune, joining us here at ninety three point three
KJRFM before Washington State and Boise State played tomorrow night
on the Blue Turf. Sam, how fun has it been
to be around and to watch how well John Mattier
has been playing so far this season?
Speaker 5 (07:30):
It's been certainly impressive. You know, he was kind of
like an unknown quantity just has about, you know, a
couple pas, like eight passes or so as a backup
and had come in on trying of some run options
last year. But the thing about John materials he's been here,
He's been here for two years. He's been learning with
a lot of the number twos who are now starters
along with him. Josh Meredith was on the Apple Cup.
Just the connection there and then just starting center Devin Klaney.
(07:52):
They've they've been teammates and and teammates, especially on the
number two offense for years, and so there's a lot
of chemistry Matier has his teammates. He's kind of a
natural leader a lot. That was one of the conversations
early is just his leadership style and how he's not
afraid to call teammates out and that's been you know,
a huge steam for the Coups overall, but for John
Mattier just to see him not only you know, passed
(08:15):
the ball to a lot of success recently, but also
just to run the ball. I believe he's like top
fifteen in the nation in passing and in rushing. And
that's not just rushing as a quarterback. That's rushing overall,
right up there with with you know, all all the
running backs and folks and so in college football, college football,
and so John Terry just brings a dimension that Washington
State's never really seen this kind of that due that
(08:37):
dual threat quarterback and you know, just kind of the
numbers just kind of pop up the page, but just
the way that he conducts himself and his leadership style
and it not obviously not not to speak to him prematurely,
but Washington State does have a certain soft spot for
long haired, shaggy quarterback and so we've we've seen that before. Obviously,
(09:00):
you know, they's got he's got a long way to
go before he's in Minshew Territory. Gardner Minshaw territory. But
he certainly captured the hearts of the Police in a
similar manner. And so I think Cook fans to tell
you they're enjoying the season very very much so far.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Sam. While we're on the subject of running of all
things rushing offense for the Cougars, where has Wayshaun Parker
come from? The true freshman from Sacramento has to become
the number one back and I've read where he lost
seventy pounds in high school, used to be a middle linebacker,
fullback type. How did Dicker, How did Dicker get him?
And how did he rise from an early enrollee in
(09:33):
January to becoming a true freshman starting running back.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Yeah, well, as he've seen, he certainly has the talent
and and has gotten the results to earn that. They
were actually concerned that they wouldn't be able to sign
Wayshaun Parker. He had kind of a great senior year
and they were where they were worrying that he would
trend too far up and just kind of commit to
a different school other than Washington State. But he held
(09:59):
his commitment to Wash his eight somehow and chose to
come to the Police as an early enroll, as he said,
So he's been here since January out in Pullman, and
I think that that extra few months, extra four months
of work really kind of mattered because he got to
know John Mattier, He got to know his offensive line,
he got to know the coaches and the staff there
(10:19):
and expectations and kind of meld in with the culture.
And that matters, especially as you know, as a freshman,
you know, folks who didn't choose to early enroll maybe
got here in June or July seven, started in late August,
and so you know, just to have those four months
in the bank and just to get to know Pulman,
to get to know the community and more so get
to know you know, your staff and the team culture
(10:39):
and what that all looks like has been huge. And
then of course we've seen him just have explosive run
up for explosive run. Even in even games where he
hasn't racked up, you know, a crazy amount of yards,
he's still been productive. He had a solid rush at
the Apple Cup, which really mattered. And we've just seen
Wayshaun Parker just in a room with and it was
(11:00):
a crowded room obviously, Dylan Payne or to Water senior
divinually swin Baker. They've kind of had their carved out
their own roles as bell cow power, power back type,
goal line running backs. But way Shawn's risen above and
there's reasons gotten the starting spot. It's because he gets
the results and he's just kind of a different brand
of runner. He bounces off of guys and even with
(11:22):
even after contact, you can get a couple more yards
and that matters.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Especially you mentioned senior run A mcdillan payne from tom
Water High School and your Neckleary, would you Lacy, if
I'm not mistaken, is that where you're from? Yes, yeah, okay,
that's stuck in my mind because my son played college
soccer for Saint Martin's College. This is the voice of
Sam Taylor. He's the beat writer for Washington State for
the Lowston Tribune. He's joining us on the Beacon Plumbing
Hotline talking about the Koogs tomorrow night at Boise State.
(11:46):
You wrote a story about Jake Dickert, the head coach
for the for the Cougars, saying that the players picked
him up. I didn't deliver for you at the San
Jose State game, and you guys picked me up. What
did he mean by that?
Speaker 5 (12:00):
Yeah, so Jake just turn the santas They State game
Washington State sounds Secret. They were thirteen point five point favorites.
You know, the running kind of just perception is that
they should steam roll them out in the West, say
for maybe this weekend's game against Boisy State, but that
didn't happen. One, Sundsley State is much more talented than
a lot of people gave them credit for. Nick National
(12:21):
were one receiver in the nation. Emma Brown, a former
DBC quarterback, is now the fifth highest PAS passer in
the nation. Early on, but beyond Santaurday's States just talent
on offense. The Coops had the opportunity to put this away,
and he pointed the two or three different mistakes giving
away two special team possessions. They did a fake field
goal that just didn't work Deans Genakowski, the kicker was tackled,
(12:45):
and then earlier in the game, Soundsley State kind of
jumped them on an early on side kick which gave
them extra possession and three more points. And then in
overtime he made the mistake of they were already you know,
they start college over time. They started the twenty five
yard line. It was the second overtime. It was the
second possession of the first overtime, so that any score
would win it, field goal included, and they chose to
(13:07):
kind of press the ball down the field Materi throws
deep and it gets picked off and so then they
have a second overtime period when they could have won
it in that first overtime. And so Dickert pointed those
things lost special team possessions, and then the strategy and
overtime is as mistakes that he made as the most
alering ones. And then there was a really the clip
that Washington State Football published to do this huge like
cinematic recap now of their games, and in that clip
(13:30):
they showed Dickard right after the game and he says
those exactly words, you know, you guys picked me up.
I didn't deliver for you today. You guys picked me up.
And so that kind of sense of accountability and sense
of responsibility. You know, some coaches may not be willing
to accept that type of responsibility, but Jake Dickard is,
and that's part of the culture and the sense of
(13:51):
accountability for this Washington State football team. And that's translated
to the players calling each other out from you know,
a place of love, just trying to get better. Whereas
last you know, the Coups started four and oh, lost
sixth straight, missed out on the bowl game. This year
that four and oh again kind of at a crossroads.
Where is the season going to go? And one of
the reasons why they say this season will go better
than last year is that sense of accountability. They really
(14:13):
focused on that in the offseason, just trying to finish games.
And obviously they you know, several mistakes in the sas
the state game almost cost them that game, but they
came through Jack diggerd that never led a fourth quarter
comeback in his three years at Washington State. He was
oh and ten, he said, when trailing in the fourth quarter,
and this was his first win coming behind from behind
(14:33):
in the fourth quarter. Obviously a game where they were
fourteen fourteen up in the first half, like you know
it kind of but they made some mistakes to get
in that position in the first place. But it didn't
let that phase them. They pulled together, they pulled through,
and they got the two point double overtime win that
two fans will remember for better or worse, you know,
a lot a lot of palpitations there, but they'll remember
(14:54):
for better or worse, for for years to come. And
so a huge kind of landmark win. To my point. Oh,
you know the Santa they say should have beaten them
by a mile, They know that, they know that in
the room, and that's what's kind of translated into this
kind of sense accountability and knowing that, you know, if
they want to be where they want to be, they
got to finish games. And so they did finish that
(15:15):
game last Friday, and that's what they're going to need
to do going forward.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Well, a whole different deal tomorrow, right.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Sam Ashton Johnty is four hundred, five hundred and eighty
six yards rushing through three game, nine touchdowns. He's a
Heisman candidate Boise State's running back. They haven't seen the
koops haven't seen something like this yet this season. What's
the plan to stop him in Boise State's running game tomorrow? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (15:38):
Yeah, Ustin Jenty's he's sucond in the nation in rushing
yards despite playing one and a half fewer football games.
Shout out second half Sportland State, and they had a
bye week and he's still right up there right shooting
up at Sharts an incredible run, averaging ten yards per carry.
Jack David said this week it's not revolutionary. They're going
to load the box and just try to limit. He
(15:59):
didn't say stopped there, Charravan have to they stopped, he said,
limit genty as much as possible. We saw I think
he rushed for one hundred and ninety two yards versus
organ Organs still squeaked out that way. Not not obviously
it's not one to one comparison there for the Ducks
and the coups, but that similar strategy of limiting genty
and then you know, you know, trying to get like
(16:20):
those third and long situations where that's more the wheelhouse
of the Kubs. They can maybe stop the boy to
stay passing attack on those kind of third and long situations.
But in order to get there, of course they're gonna
have to stop genty. First. We've seen kind of the Koubs.
I believe they're like second a nation and mistackles. So
despite you know, being four and oh, they've not short
(16:41):
of mistakes and they've allowed I think four hundred yards
or more and maybe all all their games. I need
to check that. But you know, defense is it's been
a bend not break defense all year. Jonah Coleman. They
were able to against other Huskies, they were able to
limit him and then come up big in the last
moment when it mattered. And so that's gonna be probably
a similar If the Coops have their way their game plan,
(17:03):
that might be a similar similar ending in that no
limit genty. They'll try to stop the Boys State passing
game in those third long situations. But if they can
do that or not, it's really much dependent on just
their leverage and their tackling plan and just being dedicated
to the things that they can control. And so Jack
is going to be a huge challenge, but definitely the
best best defensive player they face so far this year,
(17:25):
maybe all probably all year honestly, And so huge test
and Boys at seven pm tomorrow, So we'll see if
the Cooks can rise up the coups.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
Hope that that Boise State runs a short side option
into the short side of the field and fourth and
one maybe will help them.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Out Tomorrow night.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
It seems like a game, yeah, seems like a game
that the offense might have to outscore, might have to
be a big Materier night on the Blue turf tomorrow.
Enjoy it, Sam, great to talk to you. Appreciate you
joining us. I have a great weekend. Enjoy the Boise State.
Washington State a big showdown tomorrow night.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
Thank you, Greg, really appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Have a great day you too, saying that's Sam Taylor,
Washington State beat writer for the Lewiston Tribune. Great young writer,
does a great job, I mean all over it. He's
from the West Side, from Lacey, Washington. He joined on
the Beacon Plumbing hotline. Great to have him on big
game tomorrow night for the Koogs. Some say that's the
biggest roadblock left for your boys, Chris. They win that tomorrow.
(18:21):
Let's just take it one game at a time.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
I've said this before.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
How awesome would it be for twelve and oh Washington
State to get into the playoffs one week at a time.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
That would be so awesome.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
I mean at justice again, I teach at Washington I
live right down the street from the campus. I have
a lot of friends at Washington. Still, after what Washington
State has gone through and what the rest of the
Pac twelve did to them for them to get twelve
and oh and reach the playoffs as an independent also
ran left behind. Oh man, they'd be national Darwin. It'd
(18:51):
be America's team. I know. I'm not for say it
on the Huskies flagship station, right. That's just facts, man,
that's just facts. If they went twelve and every single
person in the country that follows college football except a
Washington Husky would be rooting for the Coops, they'd be
America's team. But you're right. First thing's first Tomorrow night
on the Blue Turf. Johnty's gonna give them a run
(19:14):
literally for this undefeated record that the Cooks take in
to Boise State tomorrow night. It's a seven pm kickoff
coming up. Factor Fiction your chance to win one thousand
dollars from the Emerald Queen Casino, the betting capital of
the Northwest. We do it every day at this time,
and we're gonna give you a chance to win money.
Next to ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Welcome back to the show.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
The Greg Bell Show with Christopher Kidd rolls on here
from ten to one today on ninety three point three
kjr FM. We're gonna fill in for Ian Furness. He's
gonna get the day off although he's going to join
us at twelve o'clock. We bring them in for just
an hour because the Husky Hawnk's pregame show of Washington
at Rutgers is going to be starting at one o'clock,
(20:03):
so we'll take you right up to that. Chris, I
think the Huskies are gonna boat race Rutgers. Coleman twenty
rushes honey twenty plus yards. I need that. The factor
fiction pick was Washington plus the two and a half
points we got. We'll take that, thank you very much.
But I give John to Coleman the ball twenty plus times.
How does mister Rogers do? What are you expecting from him?
(20:25):
I would rely on Coleman, I really would. But yeah,
Mississippi state sec leading passer last year should be a
goat able to go into Rutgers and win a game.
I think I need some touchdowns from young man fantasy purposes.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
Why but yeah, college.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Fantasy now the Morning Show, yep, Chuck bugging Ash. Oh yeah,
it's degenerous that they are. Oh you know, GA have
a little fun there too. You know, Chris, you're a trader.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
You took the you dev Husky.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Well, I'm sorry, we're not on the same conference. Oh yeah,
that's right. Yeah, I don't It's okay. How they forget that?
So it happened. You know, you're so caught up and
then you took a Husky. You're a coup. We're not
in the same conference. So yeah, I made the decision
to take him. And he's been playing really well, so
I need him to play well again. He played well
against the Koogs and the Apple Cup they just lost.
(21:10):
So I was like, cool, college fantasy. Yeah, not fantasy purposes,
real life purposes. I'd give jonah'coleman the ball twenty plus
times and see how he does one hundred and twenty
plus yards. And really, you look at Washington schedule against
the Big Ten, going down the road here Michigan next
week in Husky Stadium, starting with at Penn State. I mean,
they need to win this game. This is a game
(21:30):
they should win a little surprise at they're underdogs on
the road. Line went from three to one and a
half now, but we got a two and a half
year if you picked with us earlier this week on
fact or Fiction, we took the Huskies plus the points. Yeah,
I think they win this game out right, and I
don't know again what I've seen in Jonah Coleman. Just
(21:51):
give him the ball twenty plus times a game and
take your chances. Well, the writers I were running back to,
yeah they do, Yeah, they do, and they yeah, So
he's going to get some touch. Should be a fun
game though, five o'clock right here on ninety three point
three KJRFM with Tony Caster Crone and Cam Clear. And
remember the Husky Hawks pregame show with Dave Softy Maler
(22:11):
begins at one o'clock four our pregame show today, Yeah
at the Beer Hall in Kirkland. And then the Seahawks
don't play till Monday night five point fifteen local times.
So you've got a whole weekend of football that doesn't
have to do with the Seahawks that you can watch
and listen, and that we ran down the list earlier
(22:32):
of all the games here on the KJR dual stations.
But a lot of football to watch, for sure, and
a lot of them we're trying to keep you interested
in with factor fiction on what to follow. Armies off
because they won last night or early Washington will be off.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
So this isn't annual.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
Washington State the only local interest major college team that's
playing tomorrow, which is unusual for this time of year,
that just only won school and that's not until seven
o'clock kickoffs, so you gotta washed. The biggest game a
college weekend, of course, is Georgia at Alabama. Oh that's
a big one. Alabama home underdog, came und bors home
underdog to Georgia.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Show us what you got.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
It's been how long since they've been a home underdog?
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Google it.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
I don't know a long time, it's been years. I'm
gonna stay away from that game, but I'm gonna give
you a chance to win one thousand dollars right now
from the Emerald Queen Casino, the betting capital the Northwest.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Where's that to go?
Speaker 4 (23:26):
Glad you're with us.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
ten thousand dollars grand prize. It's Factor Fiction, brought to
you by the Emerald Queen Casino, the betting capital of
the Northwest. Make the beautiful new week you see sports
Bookie your home all.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Football season long.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Fact Door Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJR FM.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
All Right, Factor Fiction, our last one of the week,
Your last chance to get on board with the KJRS
lead eating show in this contest. Right now, I'm gonna
keep talking this up until it's not true anymore, which
means I'm gonna keep talking about it until the contest
ends in the middle of December. Greg Best Show with
Christopher Kidd is in first place. So if you want
your best chance to win a thousand dollars, just text
(24:14):
fact to four, nine four or five to one. No
matter what I'm about to say. My hometown Pittsburgh Steelers
are going to Indianapolis to play the Colts.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
All the attention in.
Speaker 4 (24:24):
The Steelers about their quarterback Justin Fields and how Russell
Wilson isn't playing and he's still injured, and who's the quarterback. Meanwhile,
their defense is best in the league. Right now, they're
giving up ten points, ten points, six points to the Broncos,
ten to the Chargers. I know Justin Herbert was injured,
ten to the Falcons on the road. I know first
(24:44):
game Kirk Cousins didn't go well. Now they're going on
the road against Anthony Richardson and the Colts. The Steelers
offense is averaging just seventeen points a game. They're three
and oh they're three and oh with the seventeen points
of game offense and the number one scoring defense ten
ten and eight ten ten and six is with the Seahawks.
The Steelers have given up excuse me, in their three games.
(25:06):
The Colts are having just nineteen points a game. So
you see where I'm headed here. The over under is
forty Steelers Colts give me the under a seventeen to
thirteen type of game. That's unusual in the NFL to
go under forty. But if ever there's a game that
it's going to it's not even the lowest. One of
the Broncos Jets is even lower than this this week.
(25:29):
Steelers Colts give me the under forty points. If you agree,
text fact the four nine to four to five one
right now, you have twelve minutes to do it.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
That's if you want to win one thousand dollars.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
If you don't want to win one thousand dollars, text
fiction to four nine to four to five to one.
You've got twelve minutes to do that. Steelers Colts total
points scored under forty.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
It's a little bit of a reach, I know, I.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
Mean, I don't know what it is because it's only
twenty four football under forty points. I don't know this.
They dropped twenty seven against the Texas and I went
minus I think three and a half that first week
in the Texans just don't know how to hold a lead,
and then Anthony Ridginson can throw from here to Tacoma,
as Greg would say, So I just I that's a
tough one. But I don't think justin Field is gonna
(26:12):
light it up.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Twenty one against.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
The Bears, the Colts scored, and they scored ten on
the road against the Packers.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Yeah, I just twenty seven.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
Well that that was a throw in touchdown at the
end the Colts got against the Texas.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
I know you are well aware of that.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
I know that. I'm like, hey, guys, gonna stop. So
that's really twenty points and then a throw in garbage
time touchdown at the end.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
So they haven't scored really more.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
Than twenty one they got for the throw gim me
the under forty points total points Steelers Colts. If you agree,
text factor four nine, four or five one. If you disagree,
text fiction the four, nine, four or five to one.
Your next chance to play is two thirty five during
a Nope, They're not gonna do it. Nope, you doubb pregame.
They're not gonna do it during the pregame show. No,
(26:57):
why you dub pregame. You take people chance to win money.
Nobody cares whether it's to the pregame show. Now they're
gonna have multiple segments. It's I'm surprised to hear that.
Why would I could have picked three you and I
could have picked three games and made up for the
two lines. There's gonna be in the pre game. It's
all set. There's no no next Monday. Really, this is
(27:20):
the last one of the week. Yep, this is it. No,
I wasn't in on this decision, but I don't know
why they would do that because of the pre aim
that's so good. I don't know what is that sacred
ground you can't get people just dollars. Tusky Honks is
a segment. Literally, it's a four hour segment. Yes, yeah,
it's pretty much it. It's take three minutes to take a
(27:41):
couple of picks at two thirty three, unless I get
a text saying otherwise.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Yeah, okay, So there you go. This is our last
chance of the week.
Speaker 4 (27:47):
I don't know why no one consulted me, not that
anyone would have listened. Okay, we're giving you the last
chance of the week to one one thousand dollars Steelers
Colts total points under forty. If you agree, text factor
four nine one. If you did agree, text fiction to
four nine four y five one. You have nine minutes,
nine minutes to get a chance at one thousand dollars
from the Emerald Queen Casino, the betting capital of the Northwest.
(28:11):
Coming up next, the Mariners next hitting coach. Is it
gonna be Edgar Martinez? Does he even want to do it?
We're gonna replay Gary Hill Junior's thoughts about that. The
Mariners broadcaster and noon Ian Farnesse will join us twelve
to twenty. Danny O'Neill all that next on ninety three
point three KJRFF.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Welcome back to the greag Best Show with Christopher Kidd
rolls on.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
Till one o'clock in the Husky Hanks pregame show here
on ninety three point three kJ r FM. You still
got a minute or two, maybe a factor of fiction,
the last one of the week here on the station.
Steelers Colts under forty total points under forty. Take the
under Steeler Colts under forty points Text factor four nine
four to five one. If you agree, text fiction to
(28:55):
four nine four y five one. If you disagree, poles
will close momentarily, so get them in your last chance
of the week to win a thousand dollars from the
Emerald Queen Casino, the betting capital of the Northwest.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Again if you win even one.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
So the eighteen times we've given this game show opportunity
this week, you win just one time, you'll be entered
in the drawing to win one thousand dollars. We had
a guy a couple of weeks ago who just had
one entry the whole week and it was taken Army
in the under, and the Black Knights did it for
him and he won a thousand dollars for that. Remember,
this is the leading show of the week. I'm just
going to keep saying that until it's not true. We're
(29:28):
the show in the first place. So if you want
to win a thousand dollars, text fact to four nine
four or five one. Steelers Colts under forty to me, Chris,
we talked about this yesterday, but to me, the biggest
issue of the Mariners. Sorry, yeah, the plan. Sorry sorry,
Jerry Poto's coming back. There's no we can all say
(29:50):
he shouldn't be coming back. I've already said he shouldn't
be coming back. He is, so there's no turning back.
They're not selling the team. So John Stanton is still
going to be the chief execut I could have in
charge of the Mariners. That's not changing. So what needs
a change. Well, in the last thirty days of the season,
their hitting approach changed. Edgar Martinez told him not to
swing the bats so hard. Instead of hitting trying to
(30:11):
hit every pitch to Mercer Island regardless of situation, swing
seventy to eighty percent and put the.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Ball in play.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
Imagine that, not strikeout or hit home runs, no exit velocity,
no launch angle, just put the ball in play. Edgar
Martinez became a Hall of Famer doing that. Well. It
helped they dug a hole, they lost the lead so
quickly they couldn't get it back, and they're out of
the playoffs for the twenty second time in twenty three years.
But the guy who did that, Edgar Martinez, the hitting
(30:39):
coach that came with Dan Wilson. The thirty plus games
left in the season, the biggest question to me is
does he want to return and do this again next year?
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Why would he? Why?
Speaker 4 (30:50):
Why would you want to go in the mid February
spring training down on Arizona and go all the way
till now and through now into October. At his point
in life and what he's a common Please, I don't
think he'd want to do it. So I asked Gary Hill,
junior and Mariners broadcaster yesterday when he was on our show,
that very question. Here's what Gary said.
Speaker 6 (31:08):
As far as Edgar long term, I don't know, because
the thing is, and I don't know how many people
realize this hitting coach is a hard job. It is constant.
It's twenty four hours, like we're we're on the road
and I'm running around before the game. Coaches are walking
to the ballpark at ten ten thirty am for a
(31:30):
seven o'clock game. I mean, the hitting coaches are there
all day long, all day every day. If you don't
have to do it like you're at your Martinez, Is
he gonna want to do that for a full season.
Speaker 4 (31:44):
I don't know, that's the question.
Speaker 6 (31:45):
Like I don't know, like he'll still be around because
he's always been around, which will be great. But I'm
not sure because it's a huge time commitments, just a
lot of work. And wait, Edgar doesn't have to do it,
like he's in a position where he doesn't need the job.
I think he loves the teaching aspect, and he loves
being around and he loves being a part of things.
(32:06):
But that's a lot, man, that is a lot.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
That's a big job. Garryell Junior saying just about every word.
But no, that he's not coming back, Not that I
necessarily think he has any inside information that Edgar has
shared with him that he wouldn't want to share with us.
But think about it. Hall of Famer. He's sixty one
years old. He and his wife Holly have been very
(32:30):
active in the community here. They had a clothing business
for a while. They are very active in the Seattle community,
still live here. Why would you want to go on
the road for a four city road trip in May
and come to spring training and live in Peoria for
eight weeks and February to the end of Mark. Why
would you want to do that? Why does he didn't
have to do that? There's not I don't know if
(32:52):
there's enough money that could possibly pay him. It's all
he needs money either I don't. I don't know Chris.
And if he doesn't come back, who's going to end
still this? Who's going to tell them? Who's what?
Speaker 2 (33:04):
Hall of what?
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Cacheer that Edgar Martinez has a Hall of Fame resume
telling guys like JP Crawford who didn't quite listen as well,
but other guys don't swing for the fences on every pitch,
swing seventy to eighty percent.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
And they look at him, go, well, whatever you say,
your work for you.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
Who's going to do that?
Speaker 2 (33:23):
If he's not there as the hitting coach, who's going
to do that? Well?
Speaker 4 (33:28):
Whoever they hire as the next hitting coach? Right, And
who's going to make that higher? Not Dan Wilson. Who's
gonna make that higher? Jerry Depoto. And there we go.
We're back to we're drawing a circle to go right
back to where we started from at the beginning of
this season and how we're in the situation of having
a World Series pitching staff in Seattle watching the playoffs
(33:50):
on television starting Tuesday. I mean, that sucks. Do we
want that again? You're gonna run that back? We don't
need to see another six hours of that six more
months of that, and therein lies the problem. The guy
choosing who the next hitting coach is going to be
is the same guy who chose the hitting approach this
year an abject failure, one of the worst hitting approaches
(34:13):
ever in Major League history. Look up the numbers. They
verify that that was the worst hitting approach ever put
on a baseball field with the best pitching staff and
it didn't work. Crashing failure. You want to go run
that back. And that's to me the biggest question if
does Edgar Martinez want to come back and be a
(34:33):
full time hitting coach for six and a half seven
months including spring training. If that answer is no, and
every indication says it, logic says it will be who
is going to be the next hitting coach? And who
is Jerry to Poto going to pick and will he
change his approach? Gary Hill Junor saying, well, well, they're going
to take a long look at everything they how they
communicate hitting, and how they think about hitting.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Yeah, the damn right they do. And who's going to
have to do that?
Speaker 4 (34:58):
Jerry to Poto, who has He's not shown a willingness
to do anything. But what Jerry Depoto thinks is the
right thing to do. He's still smarter than anybody in Seattle. Well,
he wasn't smart enough to anybody in Seattle. This year.
He put together an offense that was putrid, and now
you're going to ask him to be in charge of
picking the hitting coach. I mean, I hate to bring
(35:21):
that up on Washington State Beef Commissioned Football Friday, but that,
to me is the question for the Mariners, a dual question. Well,
Edgar Martinez come back as hitting coach? And if not,
how is Jerry Depoto going to change enough to change
in bringing a hitting coach that will do what Edgar
Martinez told him to do. Sorry to be a rain
cloud on a Friday like that, but it's Ryan probably,
(35:43):
so it's okay. Up next I for Naess. He's not
in the studio. We gave him the show day off,
but he's going to join us at twelve o'clock twelve twenty.
Danny O'Neal from New York on all Things Seattle Sports.
The former beat writer now a contributor to the News Tribune.
Call him this for us. He'll join us at twelve
(36:05):
twenty at twelve forty four nine four five one to
tell them we'll do text line. Can we pass a
hat and take a collection to get Edgar Martinez to
come back? Can we go bang on his Holly's door
on the east side and their home and beg them
have a vigil? Can we do something to get Edgar
Martinez to come back? Please? What would youish solution be
for the hitting coach? For the managers? At twenty twenty five,
(36:26):
Tons more to talk about in football Because it's a
Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday, Remember Husky Hawks pregame
show one o'clock right here on ninety three point three KJRFM,
leading up to Washington at Rutgers a five pm kickoff
here on the station. Tons more to talk about next
