picks who are no longer starting quarterbacks only part way
into their second season. Jorianstein Now from Zeke's Pizzaszspizza dot

the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Hello, ma'am, how are you?

Speaker 3 (03:05):
I am doing well? Greg Christer, how are you guys doing?

Speaker 1 (03:08):
We are well. Thank you. Better than the hometown football team.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Anyway, Oh, Greg, don't mind, Sat.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
We are start not hot today right.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
News of the last half hour that Anthony Richardson benched
by the Colts and they're going to go with Joe
Flacco man Jory. The trend now is number one draft picks,
get what maybe a season and if you aren't doing it,
you're done.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
What's going on here?

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Yeah? I think it's super fascinating. I was trying to
talk to people around the league last night about this,
because while the decision was made today, it seems Shaane
Spiken did start saying yesterday when asked about a starter,
that they were evaluating everything, and in previous weeks he
had said that Richard was going to be a starter.
And I think when I look at this, I think,
how does this compare to the Bryce John benching we

(03:54):
saw at the beginning of the season. Look, Bryce have
played a full season. He's gone with the second coaching staff,
and whether or not that was defensible, A big reason
for that. What people were telling me in Carolina is
that this was a first year head coach and if
you just don't get wins, they felt like the coach
was going to lose the locker room well seam psych
and I don't think of losing a locker room anytime soon.
I think he got a ton of respect for how

(04:16):
he handled that team last year. And the biggest knock
on Anthony Richardson coming into the NFL was he hasn't
played enough. He needs to play. I talked to their
general manager, Chris Ballard at training camp right after they
drafted him last year, and he said, we know there's
going to be bounds, we know it's going to be
a roller coaster, but we want to live with that.
And so I think what's challenging is that maybe in

(04:36):
the short term you're more likely to be a really
good Minnesota Vikings team on Sunday Nights football, But in
the long term, what are you doing to your top
draft pick?

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Exactly?

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Therefore, there are eight games into the season, they're basically
eight games into Anthony Richardson's starting career. They're foreign four.
They barely lose to the Texans the other day. We
know Jim Mersey and his issues that have go beyond
the team. Is that part of this here that are
needs to win right now? Or Stiken is trying to
impress an owner, or what is going on that eight

(05:05):
games in they think Anthony Richardson's not worthy of plan anymore.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Well, that's what's interesting to me, because there are people
I talked to who thought that Jim Mersey is a paseowner.
When you look at how Rock Peyton Manning's career started
out and where it ultimately led them, that really has
shaped not only the Colts organization currently, but even when
you talk to Andrew Berry, the Cleveland Browns general manager,
who came up in his career through the Colts, it
really shapes his perspective on quarterback development, and so I

(05:32):
think everyone who's ever been with the Colts is shaped
by that. It doesn't help Anthony Richardson that this this
past game, he did tap on a helmet for one
of the plays and asked to come out. And when
asked after the game why he came out, was he injured?
He said, honestly, I was just tired. And I think
that that's challenging because I'll give you why it's the problem,
and then I'll give you why I don't think it

(05:53):
needs to be quite as Uther prompt. The problem is, okay,
you don't think the offensive line blocking for you are tired.
You don't think the receivers trying to on the rafts
with the extreme detailer tired. Like you are the quarterback.
You're not just a player on the team. You need
to be playing at the highest level. And if you're
not performing at the highest level, your work ethic in
your effort at least need to be. And when I
look at what's going right with Jayden Daniels and Washington,

(06:15):
that's number one on the on the front side. I mean,
I don't know. I think the fact think he said
it doesn't really bother me. I think it's the fact
that he did it that's the problem. I'm like he
learned from it. People ain't mistakes, Like I don't think
we need to take every guy's single mistake and then
never let them come back from it. But I do
think that it probably impacted the locker room. And when

(06:36):
I talk to people on the league, they say, this
isn't just an outside noise thing. This does impact the
noise inside the locker room too. If your guys don't
think you're fighting hard enough for them.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
To me, it's a twenty two year old kid. Just
to answer a question, Yeah, I's tired.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
It's the kid, but right, the team.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Isn't the question. The issue is that he did it
because again, when I was covering the Cowboys I remember
one of their safeties, Xavier Wood years ago, I think
it was twenty twenty talk to us about how you
couldn't go one hundred percent on every play, and he
got a lot of heat for it, when really he
meant like just the realities of it's a marathon, I'm
not a sprint. But he didn't take himself out of
the game because he was tired, and so I think
that's the difference here.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
So you think that's a factor here. The part of
the reason he's getting bench is because of that whole thing.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
I think that shape I can made very clear in
his Monday prep conference to say that that would not
be factory to his decision. But I do think when
you consider the accountability that you want to hold the
team to, I do think it's a factor, and I think,
if anything, it's the most logical reason for why you
had mention him, because from up her performance standpoint, there's
a lot of other things going wrong on that team

(07:37):
that aren't just Anthony Richardson's fault, and he needs to
play if you want to get him where you're going
long term.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
You mentioned Bryce Young. Considering where the season is. Bryce
Young did get to play again. He played against the
Broncos and didn't have the greatest game, but he got
back out there. Do you see that happening with Anthony
Ridgeson or is this a move that says, yeah, we're done, Flack, Well,
this is your team for the remainder of this season.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, it's funny when I thought, when I see that
Anthony richards something I remember when I was in I
think he was middle school on the volleyball team and
I went to a concert and missed a practice. So
it was like one of the few times I ever
did that, and my coach benched me from starting the
next game, and she was like, OK, you're still going
to play, but like we need to show people you
got to come to practice. And so I'm wondering when

(08:22):
you look at Anthony Richardson's how much of this is
they want to win for the season versus they want
to turn him a little message and make sure that
he hears it loud and clear. I do think he'll
play again this season. I also think that the quotes
have been through so many quarterbacks like Jill Flacko in
the last five years that yes, they can probably win
more games this season with him, But is your goal

(08:43):
to win games this season? Is your goal to win
a super Bowl in the next five to ten years?

Speaker 1 (08:47):
What are you?

Speaker 3 (08:47):
What?

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Were you so good at a band that you get
to be off the varsity for a day or two?

Speaker 3 (08:52):
Oh? Not banded volleyball?

Speaker 2 (08:54):
No, I'm saying, did you you miss volleyball because you
did a music concert?

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Is that what you said?

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (08:59):
No, no, went.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
I love.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Oh I knew.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
There was some more the truth in that. Yeah Montana show. Wow, Okay,
I am curious.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
There's so much more to ask you there, But okay,
we'll move on.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
No, there really is, but we'll keep it football. With
Bryce Young getting the start last week, do you think
he starts again or is it now in a situation
where it's like, well, why did you put him back
in and he didn't play well? Well, actually he played
pretty well. He had two touchdown, two interceptions. Just look
at the stat line. But how do you see that
playing out?

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Now?

Speaker 4 (09:36):
They brought Bryce Young back and now they're like, okay,
now what do you do?

Speaker 3 (09:41):
I would love for him to get another opportunity, because
that's kind of the Saints this week. And the Broncos.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
Defense is really.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Really, really good and one of the ones that's definitely
underrated coming into the season. And so the Saints and
Giants the next two opponents, we are not doing great,
but the Giants actually are pretty trying defensively, so I
think you give him another week against the Saints.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Jory, I'm signer a weekly visit things to these pizzas
these pizza dot com. She's the senior NFL writer for
Yahoo's Sports talking about everything in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
And there is a lot to talk about. Here.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Are the Lions the best team maybe in the NFL.
I know the Chiefs are unbeaten, but man, the Lions.
Who's going to stop then? Joey, what's it going to take?
The slow down Detroit?

Speaker 3 (10:22):
I don't know how they're going to get stopped unless
Patrick mahomes postseason magic, not even regular season matter, but
I think could do it. I mean, this team is
so good and I know when we're prepping for the show,
you guy fast. Are they peaking too early? No, They've
been peaking for like three seasons now, right, They two
seasons middle of the season until the end of that
year when they kept the Packers out of the playoffs.
The technically didn't make the playoffs. They've been good for

(10:43):
so long. They're good in so many ways offensive and defensively.
They managed to keep their coordinators despite both of them
being great, which really matters a lot with from the
continuity standpoint and from giving you the edge when all
the players in the league are good and when I
look at them, I mean I believe they had six
skilled players scored, not even their kicker this pass game,
and they don't. They're not relying on one person. They're

(11:05):
not relying even on Jared Goob's passing game. He's playing
super efficient, but he's not putting up and seeing numbers.
From a production standpoint, and to me, the fact that
they didn't fall off after losing Aiden Hutchington, which when
you think about how much he would like the heart
and soul of that team on the field and off
the field they totally could have, I think gives a
great time that they're not winning because they're not facing

(11:25):
any adversity like they are playing good teams. They are
losing players, and they're still loving.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
How the Eagles get off the deck. They've won three
in a row. I know it was against what Cleveland,
Cincinnati and the Giants, but now they got Jacksonville in Dallas,
they could easily be seven to two going into a
matchup with the Commanders for first place in the NFC East.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
What's turned it around in Philadelphia the last three weeks.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned their opponents, because when I
look at their last three and their next two, it's
a very different stretch than when they get into November
and have the Commanders, Rams and Ravens consecutively. But I
do think if you look about it, I know that
we want quarterbacks to be able to just elevate the
cast despite injured players not being available. But in four
games of AJ Brownleye one four times and three without them,

(12:09):
they lost twice. One of those games they didn't have
DeVonta Smith. I mean there is a skill set standpoint
when you look at the interception study through and I
know the turnovers were a big knock on him early
in the season. Well, when you are roofed at during
the guys like AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith who are
going to make you right and also just be there
and like run the routes right. I do think there
are times when the person on the other end of

(12:29):
it is making you look like you've made a bad decision,
and sometimes ture, sometimes it's not. They also got Jalen
Hurts back in the rushing game, and I think that
a young defense with a new coordinator is adjusting. But
I still think that even the next couple of weeks
aren't going to be a tell of if they're great.
Maybe it'll be of if they're like average to good,
but they really need to be able to show us
something in that Commander's rans raven.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Stretch and about the Commanders.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
But the NFC East joy I mean they win a
game like that on the Hailmary. Yeah, the Bears mess
that up and the corners playing with the fans before
taunting the fans as the play start. All of that, yes,
but still when you win a game like that, it's
kind of something going on.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Is it dan Quinn? Is it Jadon Daniels, Is it
Cliff Kingsbury? What can you pin the reason for the
resurgence by Washington?

Speaker 3 (13:16):
You didn't give me the option of are the football
guys thanking them out of the leak? And I don't
think we can undersell that impact. But in all seriousness,
I do think it's changing ownership changes. It's like new
new group coming in is huge in terms of the
culture because I think that maybe they haven't the most
talented team in recent years, but I think they were
playing even below their talent level just because the culture was.

(13:38):
I mean, it's like walking through the bud every day
just to get there. And I think when you look
at what they're doing, yeah, they absolutely hit on their quarterback.
This is not just like a game or two that
he's got beginner's black. Jaydon Daniels is a real deal.
When I talked to a scout last Nighthood scouted Jadan
Daniels pretty closely throughout his different stops. He was really
talking about like, look, this guy didn't in college and

(13:59):
these I have come into the league like the James
Daniels Bonix and they're not doing the same thing. When
you come into the league with fifty to sixty games
under your belt, it's so different than when you're a
Trey Lancer and Anthony Richardson and you haven't seen the defenses,
you haven't gotten different diversity of experiences and then dan
Quinn also as when you need to guy to say
your culture. I do think he's going to be there.
That defense still needs some work, but I think that

(14:21):
they're figuring out how to win. And also credit to
Cliff Kingsbury. This is the first time in his career
that he's an offensive coordinator at the NFL level because
he went from college coach to NFL head prest and
I think that this is a great sweet spot form.
I mean, I'm sure he'll get interviews this season. I
think you give it another year. But Cliff has always
been a great offensive mind, and when you look at

(14:42):
him getting time off, I'm sure he evaluated it. The
one thing I will say is when Cliff was the
head coach in Arizona, his teams often started out super
strong and tailed off towards the end. I don't know
how much of that was chance versus people figuring out
his team over time. And Jaden and Kyler are very
different quarterbacks. But I will want to see what that
offense can do towards the end of the season, because

(15:03):
that is going to knock on him so far in
his career.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
And Rapperport tweeted about ten minutes ago that the Panthers
have agreed to trade Deontay Johnson to the Ravens, second
place in the AFC North. They're trying to make some
moves at wide receiver.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
They're just trying to strip Dave Knolis of all possible
options of young, good players and just leave you.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
Go ahead, go ahead, coach Canal. Let's go win with this.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
Yeah, that doesn't help the Panthers, but it might help
the Baltimore Ravens who they I think Zay Flowers is
clear the number one guy, but I'm not sure if
they know who the number two guy is. Obviously they
would love it to be Rashaw Bateman. But what does
this move of going and getting Deontay Johnson's signal to
you other than the fact that, yeah, they need some
wide receiver depth.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah, I think he definitely wants the receiver depth. You
don't want to be relying too heavily on one player
in the receiving game, even if you have Derek Henry
looking like he's ten years younger than he is. And
I think that when you look at what the Chiefs
are doing and they're getting DeAndre Hopkins, they're trading for
a while backer the reasons want to get over that
hump of beating the Chiefs in the class. We know
there's good we know Lamar's and MVP can tend there perennially,

(16:07):
but they want to show that they can actually make
that final run and they don't want to leave anything
left to chance. They are fermently in that window. And
I'm granted, as long as Lamarshale quarterbacks, they'll probably be
in that window for a while. With such a well
round organization and they're fantastic at finding the personnel. But
I think that they're saying, hey, if the Chiefs they're
going to do it, we're getting in the arms race too.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Joy From your talks around the league, have the Rams
gone from sellers to no, we're not trading anybody just
because of win over the Vikings. What's the trade market
right now, not just with the Rams but in general
here before the trade deadline November fifth? And how much
do you expect the Rams to really get rid of
Cooper Cup or anybody else?

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Yeah, I know there was a lot of noise last
week about Cooper Cup and then even a little bit
about Matthew Stafford, and there were people both inside the
building and outside that were like, I don't know if
they can just win this week on Thursday night. And
I felt that way too, like I was never You're
always going to steal a few wins when shown Nicky
you're head coach, the same way that the Staelers still
wins with like Tomlin, even though they're very different coaches.
And I think when you look at it, Okay Cooper

(17:07):
Cup and Pokers Nikua come back and they play really well.
Going back to what we were talking about with the egos,
like when they have their players, they have the talent
to win. They just didn't have those guys because they
were both injured for a lot of the year. And
so I think that when you look at the division
being wide open, and you look at the amount of
talent they have on their team, like what Stafford just
did against that Viking's defense and throwing up he was

(17:28):
four touchdowns against him, Like that's what he's able to
do deep in the playoffs because of who he is
physically and how much he's seen in his career. So yeah,
I still think that they're going to be a contender.
And I did not expect them to trade those guys.
The reason you trade a guy like Cooper Cups is
because you don't have anything going this year and you
think they're not having him back next year, so you
want to get some capitol back form. But even when
they put it out there that or someone put it

(17:50):
out there if they wanted a second round pick, that's
like a pie in this guy. I think he's got
commanding more than Devonte Adams and and Lamar Cooper did.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
The Rams had Cooper, Cup and Pukainakua together for Matthew
Stafford for the first time since Week one last week
against the Vikings and it showed thirty to twenty. When
the Rams come in here on Sunday at Luomenfield to
play the Seahawks at an FC West matchup that could
determine whose first place is going in the Seahawks.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
By Jory, appreciate it. Where are you at this weekend?

Speaker 3 (18:20):
This week I've got Texans at Jets and then next
weekend I'll be at Cable or Eagles at Cowboys. Who well,
a lot of interesting teams coming up.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Who wins between the Texans and Jets.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
Now that the Texans are going to have Stefon Digs
out for the rest of the season. With that torn Aco.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
I have got Texans Patriots, and Joe Mixon didn't seem
like he needed Stefan Bags And I mean Supon Diggs
might matter in the playoffs, but I think they've got
so much talent, miss Jets. I'm gonna believe the Jets
can stop spiraling when I see.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
It exactly anybody against the Jets.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
I think I think Georgia would beat the Jets right
now pretty handily.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Actually, I mean, a Patriots team that is rebuilding and
lock their quarterbacks concussion beat the Jets, who are supposed
to be all in, got a four time MVP and
traded for devoting Adams, envied the coach. So yeah, I mean,
and again when I said that Patriots Texans, the Texans
destroyed the Patriots, that was with their starting quarterback, and
now the Patriots without their quarterback just beat this Jets team.
So if you're a favorite transit of property, that's what I'm.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
Give me army on a neutral field against the Jets
right now. Actually, yeah, that's a hometown pick for me. Joy,
thank you, We'll talk to you next Tuesday, and enjoy
your week.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Appreciate it.
