Speaker 1 (00:03):
Dear Orlando led Better, the award winning long time Falcons
beat writer for the Atlanta General Constitution, is on the
Beacon Plumbing Hotline right now we talk about the Atlanta
side of the Seahawks Falcons matchup on Sunday. Sir, thanks
again for being on the show.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Sure, no problem, Greg, Well, thanks for having me.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
You're welcome.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
What your Falcons they They're scoring points, they're running the ball,
they're throwing. What's going on in Atlanta with Kirk Cousins
and Jean Robinson, Tyler Jude, they look like a juggernaut
the moment.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Well, yeah, that's certainly foreign too. I don't know about
the Jumman. They found a way to win three at
the end and it beat the lonely Panthers. So yeah,
they're foreign too and looking pretty good here early in
the season.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
What do you make of Atlanta defensively? They have one
of the worst pressure rates and pass rush. Pass rush
has been a problem for the Falcons team you've covered
for years. Byron Murphy was telling us here in Seattle
this week he thought the Falcons are gonna draft him
at eight overall before they took market Pennix. Has that
impacted the defense, the lack of pass rush and the
fact that they're giving up the highest completion rate in
(01:16):
the league. How much has that hampered the whole team
that they haven't pressure quarterbacks this year.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, it's uh, they've covered it up. They've masked by
playing coverage and playing the two safeties that they have,
Justin Simmons and Jesse Bates, and keeping things and keeping
things in front of them. They haven't given up the
you know, deep ball, but there's a lot of stuff
available underneath, and then they're coming up and tackling it.
(01:44):
So it's a ben but not great type deal. They're
still there, you know, you just don't just get a
pass rush. They're not even getting there when they blitz,
So you know that's probably it's probably been functioning here.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
The Seahawks have had their issue as well, especially on
the offensive line. Do you see a possibility that they
do try to blitz this Seahawks old line that has
been struggling for the past three weeks and trying to
avoid a fourth straight loss against the Falcons.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, Chris, they they're gonna try because they see that
you know, it's been sacked nineteen times. The best blitz
that I've seen is the nickel slot blitz by the offer,
so that's available. They've blitzed to Cayden Ellis the inside
linebacker seventeen times, and I think he's got like two
(02:33):
quarterback kids. He's not the one. He's not the not
the one. So yeah, I'm thinking he might even have
to start it in the corner blitz. But the interior line,
you know, they haven't done it. So Grady Jaffs, the
one you got blocked, got double team Grady and let
the you know, the other guys hold up one on one.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Fortunately, the Seahawks have a brick wall offensive line, so
there's no way that thes we'll ever get through that.
I'm being.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Darl I know that better.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
The award winning beat writer for the Atlanta General Constitution
joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotland in ninety three
point three kg R F M. When we talked to
you in the summer, do you said you were pretty
sure Kirk Cousins would be the starting quarterback as long
as he stayed healthy.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
He was their guy.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
But you had great things to say about Michael Pennix
early on. What's Penix's situation? Does he get I know,
most starting quarterbacks don't even yield at all during practice weeks,
and the backups just run scout team. But what are
you hearing about Penix? And if you had the crystal ball,
it is it probably two years before he plays or
how many how long is he gonna wait?
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah, I'm hearing great things about practice, him running the
scout team and so forth, for doing a great job.
And that's from his lock him mate Jesse Bates. The
third they're talking. They were over there talking about some
of the throws he was making in practice just this week.
So the players are definitely, you know, aware of his
(04:02):
talents and so forth. And I'm thinking, you know, Raheen
pointed out, hey, when they signed Curt's at the guaranteed
money for three years, so so I'm thinking, you know,
two years and you know maybe three the Green Bay
Models three, that's what they keep referencing. But I mean,
you know, Mike's not a younger quarterback coming out, and
(04:25):
Kirk does really great this year, really great next year.
They got be inclined to go with him into that
third game. I know that I was hoping they would
blow Carolina out early. Mike played last week, right, so
that's what people wanted to see him play for sure.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Through five weeks, have you been surprised with how Kirk
Cousins has been playing. I know Week one was kind
of the ooh, Kirk does not look good, but then
after that he kind of has found someone of the
rhythm and has that surprised you at all?
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Yeah, it took them. It took him four games. I
didn't know what it was gonna look like. Thirty five
year old guy coming back from Achilles. I wouldn't expected
him to come light it up right away. But then
he throws for four O nine in Game five against
Tampa and looks like White Tindel out there. So uh,
you know that was about uh you know that was
(05:16):
the best dream is that. Hey, that's just get in
the bottle of drink London, Uh, Bjons out of backfield,
Coylepitt and Doniel Mooney's gonna go out four hundred guards too.
So that was your dream Madden game. And they got
it to beat Tampa Bay thirty six thirty in overtime. Uh.
And then last week they ran it, so you know,
(05:37):
now you know, put together, put the run with the pass,
and then you're a balance attack and you know if
you keep pushing it in the end zone and that
settling the field, because then maybe you got something here.
We'll see, but we'll see, and he'll get to test
it out against the attlem.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
The Orlando led Better Falcons beat ready for the General Constitution,
joining us on the beacon plumbing hotline at deep.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
What makes Drake London so good?
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I think it's thirty eight percent Chris the time he's
in the slot. What makes him such an affected weapon
for them? And how how do they use him best?
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Yeah, he's uh, he's that poor man's Mike Evans, you know,
the sideline out and they put him in the slot
like they used to do with Righty White here and uh,
Muhammed said, now you know, because he's gonna get a mismatch.
Nickelback's not gonna be big enough to handle all that.
You know, Drake's a former played basketball at USC and
(06:33):
he'll tell you that he dropped thirty nine a game,
twenty nine a game in high school. So I showed
it him one day and he corrects me. I said
twenty eight. He said, no, twenty nine too. So he
can go up and get it, big body guy. Uh
And they're just moving around to get missmasters and teams
(06:54):
don't adjust to that, and then they'll have to come
up with accounts for that.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Do What does Jimmy Lake's impact on the defense or
he more of course the head coach of defensive guy,
much like the Seahawks having Mike McDonald's the head coach
as a defensive background. But what is Jimmy Is Jimmy
Likeke call the defensive plays and what stamps he put
on this defense? What do you notice characteristic of him?
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah, Jimmy uh put his stamp on it. He's calling it, uh,
and it's very pretty vanilla. Uh. You know, they're keeping
the ball in front of him, keeping the explosives out.
But he's had he's had to try to blitch. He tried. Uh,
He's got to do some more. He's got to come
home with some more creative stuff. He's count of. He's
(07:35):
kind of sitting there holding it, holding the ball in
front of him, and then Jesse Bates is building them
out by punching the ball off people getting an exceptions
justin and Jesse Uh, Grady, you'll get occasional tackle for
loss the far as throwing it out there and shoting
people out down. They haven't been able to do play
that kind of defensive football, uh this season. But they
(07:58):
say it's a working pride riss and you know, they
say the blitzes, the pressure's coming, but until we see it,
we have to you know, report what's happening out there.
And they zero stacks against the thirty six year old
old Andy Dalton. He was nfty back there in the
pocket last week. So yeah, they got they got issues,
(08:20):
but they didn't start with Jimmy Lake.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Can you tell us more about d Alford?
Speaker 4 (08:24):
I do realize that he's been targeted eight times in
the red zone this season, tied for second most amongst
all covers defenders, and he's given up sixty two yards
and two touchdowns. I imagine that the Seahawks are going
to try to spotlight him and use maybe a big
body in DK to try to get some take advantage
of his struggles this season in the red zone.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, he's a Canadian football wa. You got small couge
guy from Griffin, Georgia here, real tough, hard tackler, but
he's a little smaller, so that's why people go after
him in the slot. But they like his coverage ability,
his ability to take the two way routes and so forth.
(09:04):
He's never beaten, but he's in the picture a lot,
so he's gonna be there and play tight coverage. But yeah,
they're they're gonna. If you're gonna pick somebody attack, he's
the one. I'm most people are standing away from. AJ
Terrell and Michael Hughes is having a great season, So
then the next guy UH to go after that nickelback,
(09:24):
especially in the red zone. But Jesse Bates will be
lurking nearby usually UH to help him out. But you
had no question about it that that might be a
good matchup for the Seahawk.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
We see the numbers d of Jon Robinson's the lead back,
but then Tyler Ozios has five and a half yards
per carry for the Falcons. How do they use them both? Actually,
Robinson catches the ball in the backfield more. But can
we expect early down like a fifty to fifty type
of split and carries between the two.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
I think it's coming. That was they only got that
to that last week. But you know Jon is the
main back. They wanted him to be there Christian McCaffrey,
but through four games teams started to load up and
take him away. So the Facon have answered without Jeer
off the bench, without Jeer running for power, and after
(10:17):
yards is yards after contact numbers always been the most
impressive thing to me. I mean it was a thousand
yards back as a rookie when you know they didn't
have anything and he had to run it. But now
I think they're head towards fifty to fifty split. It's
more change of pace type of situation. If you gonna
be lighting the box, they'll bring get out Jeer to
(10:37):
pound it at you, and with Bejon they'll try to
spread it out and create some lanes on the outside
for him and run it that way.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
When we had you on in August, I asked you
about Kyle Pitts and I was like, man, I'm about
to give up hope on brother, because I always dropped
them in fantasy and things don't work out my way. Uh,
he's having an okay season and I you mentioned that
Kirk Cousins could be the answer. Are you seeing them
attempt to try to get him the ball more often?
Speaker 3 (11:07):
What have you seen differently from past seasons?
Speaker 4 (11:10):
And I know against the Seahawks he seems to always
have maybe one or two big catches. Do you see
that happening again where the Seahawks forget that he's on
the field and he winds up with a big touchdown
or a big play.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Yeah, that's what happened against the Panthers. I asked like, Hey,
what'd you see from Kyle on that play? He was like, Hey,
they just left him and ended up up left them
to go over to Drake because he kept pounding about
it Drake, so when he found out they were leaving Kyle,
he found them for a fifty two yard game. So
we've seen a fifty or thirty five fifty two. We've
(11:43):
seen some big games from Kyle. As far as consistently
getting open and being a part of the offense, we
haven't seen that yet. And then some of the folks
here got on him for a ball Kurt threw him
in the end zone that it looked like he quit
on the play and didn't go after the ball. So, uh,
some people or a little bit down on col Uh.
(12:04):
But yeah, he has been able to make the occasional
big play. Yet one game with no catches. This forty
eight game was the career for the first time he
didn't have a catch in the game period.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Did you have a target in that game?
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yes you did, Yes you did? Yeah, you count right.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
It's been it's been years since they had a legit quarterback.
Now they've got one. In this division, the NFC South
looks ripe. I mean, the Saints have absolutely fallen off
a cliff and the Falcons have already beaten the Buccaneers.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
What kind of.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
Opportunity is this for Atlanta to win the division have
home playoff games. Do you think you think they're in
the cat burn seat here?
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, they are, greg But once you look a little deeper,
you saw that they beat the Bucks without Anton Winsfield. Yes, major,
major major, just them next week in Winfield's back. So
I still think the Bucks are the better team. And
and and that's gonna show here over time. And let's
you know, people know they're playing with house money right now.
(13:02):
They got to keep getting better, uh you know, especially
on the defensive side of the ball. But the Bucks
have a defense. They have beat the beil they got
Labonte David, you know, they got Winfield back. Uh so
we know what that looks like. And Bakers swinging around
pretty good. Uh So, you know, we know what that
looks like. So I still think the Bucks are the
team they're beating the South. The Falcons is gonna have
(13:24):
an opportunity just because they stole the first three games here.
They stole the Saints game in the Bucks game, and
they beat the Panthers, so that was legit. Uh. And
we'll see how you know, if they keep getting better, Uh,
they'll be able to, you know, beat some of these
other good teams. And if not, you know, they'll be
in that seven and nine seven and nine group against
(13:46):
seven and ten group, you know, at the end. So
that's where the facts are. They're still trying to put
it together, but we know who the books are. They
went up to Detroit and beat Detroit. The Captains don't
have a win like that on their resume yet.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Dear Lenda led Better, really appreciate you, sir, I will
Chris got one with one more for you.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Man, another fantasy question. No, I know what you're gonna do.
What I'm gonna do?
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Now?
Speaker 3 (14:08):
You make h make a prediction?
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Oh yeah, uh, you know who you got winning? Give
us a score here, man, who's gonna win the game?
Who's gonna be?
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Is it gonna be?
Speaker 4 (14:19):
The SS losing four straight, or will be the Falcons
winning four straight.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Yeah, I'm going with the Falcons winning four straight. I
just don't like that defense. I think Kirk Cousins and
them will figure out whether they got passed or run
this week. I just want Metcalf to get down. Everybody
loved that guy. I want to see him do his thing.
But I can't pick the Seahawks after what I saw
(14:43):
on my on my on my Prime uh there Thursday night. Uh,
that was pretty shocking. I don't think you can fix
that in one week. And Mike McDonald's a fine guy
from Georgia, roswell Georgia. Wish him the best, but he
gotta get him some more players on that defensive side
out of the ball.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
I was like a man who's watched the Seahawk Dames.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
The Orlando that better.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Really appreciate you now seeing the press box Sunday in Atlanta,
Thank you sir.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
All Right, Greg and christ you take care of but
if you gotta take care of se Sunday, Greg
