Speaker 2 (00:19):
Welcome back to the jazz portion of the Greg Best
Show with Christopher Kidd on ninety three point three KJRFM.
Happy Thanksgiving to you. Hopefully you're with your family or
loved ones, or maybe by yourself if that's what you
want to be, getting a break, but hopefully you're being
thankful for what you have. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
Happy Thanksgiving to our next guest. John Manley, my colleague

(00:41):
at the News Tribune, anointed this week as a finalist
for Washington State Sports Writer of the Year. Well deserved
for the work he does the best there is in
the state of Washington covering high school sports. John, thanks
for being back on again.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, thanks for having me. Greg appreciate it, and thanks
thanks for the kind words.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Absolutely, I mean it. I nominated you for it, so
I obviously felt you were worthy of it. The semifinals
this weekend. Finals are next week. Three A and four
A championships are on kJ R December sixth and seventh.
I'll be doing a three A game on Friday Night
from Husky Stadium again this year. All the finals are
in Husky Stadium. That's going to be next week. The

(01:20):
semifinals are this week. The upsets. Where did you see
the biggest surprise in the quarterfinals last week? John?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
There was no major surprise to me. I mean, it
all mostly shook out how I expected. There were there
were a couple, you know, ones here and there that
that I didn't pick, But I don't think any major surprises.
You know, w F West in two A was the
number six seed and they come down to Parkland and
beat number three Franklin Pierce. That's the game I incorrectly picked.

(01:51):
And then gone Zaga Prepp comes East of the Mountains, right,
they come West of the Mountains and they knock off
a really good Kennedy Catholic team. So, but that was
the fourth I felt like, you know, that's probably a
pick 'em game, or maybe it's a slight upset, but
no major upsets I didn't see in that round.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
As you noted, the first time in the Bullpups a
Gonzaga Prep from Spokane have been in the state semifinals
since twenty fifteen and four eg Gonzaga Prep and Camas
are the one semifinal, Tijuana and some they're in the
second one. You've mentioned about Tijuana. They just they just
boat raced Lake Stevens the last weekend forty eight twenty one.

(02:31):
What's some they're looking like in coming out of the
South Sound for getting the finals bid.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Yeah, and that's there's gonna be a new state champion
this year in four A for the first time in
two years or three years. Lake Stevens had won the
last two, So that was, you know, interesting or cool,
I guess depending on on who you're rooting for, to
kind of see some new blood this year. But yeah,
Chiajuana looks every part of the championship contender. I mean

(02:59):
they they are just nasty on defense, their physical I
think it's Scott Bond's best team that he's had. They
have a huge offensive line and their lineback, linebacker Cooper McPherson.
He's the two time Mid Columbia Conference Defensive Player of
the Year, six foot two, two fifteen pound, just nasty.
I mean I had talked to Jeff Morrow and he's

(03:21):
covered prep sports in the Tri cities for a long
time and does an amazing job. And he was talking
before the season, and he had talked with Kennewick's coach
last year. They just said against Chijwana, they had no
idea where the blitz was coming from. I mean, it's
they just they disguise their coverage as well, and they
just get after you. It's it's a really hard defense

(03:42):
to prepare for. And then offensively, i mean, the their balance,
they're multiple, They they can just run the ball down
your throat. Brax and Felman, they're running back runs behind
that big offensive line. They're just they're a scary team.
And I think this is probably the matchup of the
two best defenses in the state. I think Sumners defense
is going to be up for that challenge as well.

(04:04):
They hammered Skygu last week forty one zero shutout running
back Steele Isaacs has been awesome. They're just really they
don't have maybe one standout guy on defense, Sean Griffith,
their edge rusher has been a problem all year. But
they're just really good at all three levels and all
over the place and they're not gonna make anything easy

(04:25):
for you. And then offensively, they're running back Steele Isaacs.
He's he's been as hot as anyone the last kind
of second half of the season. And then, for my money,
tight end Carter Coka. He's a Montana State commit. I
think he's I haven't seen every tight end in the state,
but for my money, he's the best tight end in
the state. Really good as a pass catcher, and then

(04:46):
he'll just bulldoze people after he catches the ball. He
had three touchdowns last week. I think this is a
fascinating patchup of two really heavyweight, physical teams. I could
see a you know, kind of a mid twenty one
set team type game. That's kind of what I'm seeing.
But yeah, it's gonna be a really fascinating matchup.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
You think Sumner gets a Husky Stadium for the final.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Well, I don't know, Greg I picked I picked Somemner
before the brackets came out to win the title. Keith
Ross has been there over twenty years and he's had
a ton of good teams over the years. They're always
in the state tournament, but they've they've never won the
whole thing under him. I picked Sumner to win the
whole thing this year, So I'm gonna stick with it,
but and I think they play number one Camus for

(05:31):
the for the championship. That being said, I wouldn't be
surprised if Chiawana came in here and won. I said
from the beginning of this bracket, I thought this bracket
was wide open. In four A, I think there's a
there were a handful of teams that could contend and
win it. So I'm gonna roll with Sumner, but I
wouldn't be surprised either way.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Again, the four A Championship, the State Championship from Husky
Stadium will be on live broadcast here on ninety three
point three KJRFM Saturday, December the seventh.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
You mentioned cam Is making to the championship for that
finals match on December seven. Do you think that what
does gun Zaga Prep have to do to dethrone them
and make your pick wrong so they end up in
the championship against maybe Sumner.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Well, and they've proven me wrong, Chris on a couple occasions.
We picked two gun Zaga Prep games this year and
we picked both their opponents, and so I'm zero for
to uh betting betting against the gun Zaga Prep bullpops.
So they'll be thrilled to hear that I'm picking against
again this week because that's worked out pretty well for them.
But I I, yeah, I think the recipe is exactly

(06:34):
what they did against Kennedy Catholic. They're gonna need some
some plays in special teams, uh, you know, some turnovers
that sort of thing to to kind of disrupt CAMAS.
I think that's the recipe against Kennedy Catholic. They had
a kickoff return for a touchdown, they blocked a punt
and returned that for a touchdown. Team some of those
kinds of plays because Camas is just so solid it

(06:58):
I just don't see Camas making those kinds of mistakes.
You look at their quarterback Jake Davidson, he has forty
six touchdowns to just five interceptions. They just play. They
play really clean football. They don't make mistakes, they don't
give you anything. I felt coming into the to the
state tournament that they were the most complete team offensively

(07:18):
and defensively. Maybe not the best necessarily in either one,
but just the most complete. They play really good on
both sides of the ball. They spread the ball around,
they're balanced on offense. They've they've given up only twenty
eight points through their first two state tournament games. To me,
they're the most complete team. I could see Gonzaga Prep
coming away with the upset. The running back Noel Holeman,

(07:40):
he's really good. But I just I have a hard
time picking against Camis. They're the number one seed for
a reason, and I think we'll see Camus in the
state title game.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
In three A. It's East Side Catholic against ODEI Chris
Roosevelt Rough Riders, the upstart Rough Riders of Roosevelt. Five
seed is against Mighty Bellevue Chris Chris. I know what
Chris is gonna say, Oda John John? Who could possibly
do you think who has the best chance of derailing

(08:12):
what looks like a runaway train in Bellevue in three eight.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Oh day? I think yeah, I think they would match
up the best. Uh and I I think yeah. I
think odayday east Side Catholic one is interesting. I think
east Side Catholic matches up with them well from a
physicality standpoint. Their defense is really good. They've got an

(08:37):
edge rusher Cody Thumbler, He's going to Idaho. He's a
good player. And then they have a really good outside linebacker.
I hope I'm pronouncing his name wrong correctly. It's watsee
logo Lobi. He's really good. The running back is good.
I just don't I just don't think they have enough firepower,
uh to make this a game against Odell or to
win this game. I think they can make a game.

(08:59):
I don't think they're to win, uh, just their defensively.
Lincoln had them have nailed down pretty well for the most.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Part fourth quarter, right yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Yeah, and it wasn't necessarily as as even a thirteen
point game as the final score indicated. I mean Lincoln
had them pretty well figured out. And I think Odey's
defense is even better. David Schwartzel He's a six four,
two hundred and fifty five pounds junior. He's got offers
from the UDW from Michigan, a bunch of other schools.
Like upfront, they're as good as anybody in the state.

(09:31):
So I think they get through. And then that sets
up a potential matchup with with number one Bellvue. And
I do think Oday of any team has the best
chance to knock off the number one seed.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Is there any hope of Roosevelt beating Bellevue?

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (09:47):
I think so.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
I I They've got athletes everywhere here. They had something
like twenty seven transfers in the offseason from the They're
being investigated right now by by the w i A.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
And I mean Roosevelt I said it, John Early. Roosevelt
was a wastelam for football. No one to the games
they were. They couldn't even get kids that come out
for the team when my kids went there only about
three or four years ago. They are in the state semifitles.
Sorry I digress, go ahead, No, and they're.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
You know, I don't expect that investigation to be resolved,
certainly not by the end of this football season, and
probably we're looking into the spring, so we won't see
any potential ramifications from that until next season. But right now,
I mean, yeah, they're loaded. They got players everywhere. Their
their quarterback Dalton Anderson, he has a big arm. Running

(10:38):
back Damury King, he's multiple, he catches the ball well.
They got a good slot receivers I hear Griffin, and
then they got a kid outside Cash Lexing there's a
good wide receiver. And then they've got some some linemen
as well. So absolutely they can match up. They can
give Bellevue a game. I just think Bellevue is such
a machine. I mean, there's a there's a reason they're
the one the one seed. They won the state championship

(10:58):
last year. Uh, they've got two Power four players on
their offensive line. They racked up on these five hundred
yards of offense against a pretty good Kenewick team last
week in a forty two to six win. So yeah,
I'm rolling with Bellvue. I think I said in the beginning,
I think it's gonna be Bellvue oday, and I'm sticking.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
With that one. Fourteen to seven. Wow, Tombwater, they're just
rolling through right now. I guess you're right. Can you
just give them the trophy now? Or is there a
slight chance arch Bishop Murphy can show up and try
to slow down this team has been dominant throughout the
whole season.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah, I don't think you can give them the trophy. Yeah,
there's only one team that has beaten in a Chordus
in the last two years, and it's not Somewater. It's
it's Archbishop Murphy who got them in October. They run
the wing tee their offensive coordinators of Bellevue products, So
you're gonna see wing t versus wing tea this weekend,
which is great for me because I think the game
might be over in an hour, maybe hour and a half. Yeah,

(11:57):
I like a good quick game, so you're gonna see
two run, heavy wing t teams. But yeah, this is
the best line on both sides of the ball that
tom Water's gonna face this year. And they've got some
good players. But I mean tom Water had a running
clock on Sea Home by the second quarter in a

(12:17):
state quarterfinals them. I mean, it's incredible, and I think
this year every year, right they run the wing tee,
they're gonna be able to run the ball well. They
have an effective offense. It's a system thing. I mean,
these kids grow up and from the time they're ten
eleven years old, they're running wing tea and by the
time they get to high school, they've gone through this
Tombwater feeder program and you can just plug them right in.

(12:40):
They literally you can plug a freshman and then they'll
know how to run that offense and it's it's kind
of an incredible thing. But I think this year the
difference is just defensively. I think tom Waters better than
they were last year. Elijah Tucker on their d line
six one two sixty five. He's a Wazoo commit. Their
linebackers Becket Wall and Cash Short are just really physical,

(13:02):
tough players. And then I think they're better on the
back end this year, which I think bodes well for
them in a potential rematch with Anta Chordas because they
Anachordus beat them by thirty last year in the state
championship game and just did whatever they want as far
as picking apart that secondary. So I think they're better
on the back end, and I think they're really good defensively.
I think this will be a closer game. I don't
foresee Ruddy Clock afore this week, but I'll roll with

(13:28):
Tom Water by a couple of touchdowns still.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Archpac of Murphy beat Lynden ten to nine last week.
When Linden went they around ten three, he scored a
touchdown and had to go for two to go for
the win. Hats off to them, far and Lowgy his son,
a friend of mine, a TSN in Canada place for
Lindon and he's a backup quarter of young backup quarterbacks
software there and he said that was a bitter, bitter loss.
But yeah, that was quite a game between archwists of

(13:52):
Hervey Linden wf wes from Cheels against Anta Chortas and
the other semi final. In two A and one A
Royal rolls on those kids from rural city are awesome
fifty six to twelve or Lyndon Christian in the quarterfinals
they get Kashmir, Seaton Catholic and Montaseno play in the
other quarterfinal or the other semi final. Same as in

(14:12):
two way. Is anyone even going to come close to
the throning Royal, you think, John.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Yeah, And before I answered that, I gotta give a
quick shout out. I watched WF West them play Franklin
Pierce last week and quarterback Gage Brumfield for WF West.
He's a six to two hundred pound quarterback and I
was super impressed with what I saw from him, and
he kind of flipped the script in that game. It
was all about I talked last week on your show

(14:37):
about Franklin Pierce and their offense and how much they
ran the football and he called his own number a
lot in that game. Brumfield did and and just ran
the ball down their throats. And he's a line as
an outside linebacker. Yeah, but he's just an athlete and
and you know, in high school, especially in the two

(14:58):
AA level, a lot of the times you just put
your best you put your best athlete at quarterback in
But he could throw the ball too. He's a good passer,
so they can make that a game. I just don't
see there. I don't think they've seen an offense nearly
as explosive as Anachordus. So I think we're gonna see
an Anacortas Tumwater rematch in two A. But to answer
your question in one A, no, I like, like I

(15:19):
had said, well, we did this this kind of bracket
breakdown a few weeks ago. I it's it's Royal or
bust for me. You know, they win the Christian in
the first round, beat a pretty good Cascade Christian team
forty to fourteen, and so you fall into this trap
again of thinking, Okay, you know, maybe maybe they can
give Royal a game, and and then Royal and comes
out and beat some fifty six to twelve. So it's

(15:41):
just they're just they seem to be every year on
a on a different level than than everybody else. So
in the two seed Seaton Catholic, they got all they
could handle. They needed a late comeback to beat life
Christian from Tacoma, who I had talked about last week.
They won forty two to forty one. So yeah, I
don't see anyone beating Royal. I'm gonna go with Royal

(16:03):
again in the one A bracket.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
John, anything if in closing, Is there anything in particular
that's surprising you about these old the high school football championships,
It's almost been chock, at least at the top.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
Yeah, no, I don't think so, Greg. You know, small
surprises here and there, but it's I felt like I
had picked Sumner Campus in four A. They're both alive, right,
I picked Ode Bellevue in three A before the tournament.
They're both alive and look like a likely state championship matchup.

(16:39):
And then in one A obviously I picked Royal. They
look like they're gonna win again probably, and then two
A and a course of tumwater was I felt like
they were on a collision course for a rematch in
the state championship games. So a couple of surprises here
and there, but as far as the favorites and who
I felt was gonna play in the state championship games,
it's it's been who I thought it was, But that

(17:00):
being said, you could see maybe a couple surprises this week,
especially not for a bracket that's the one I keep
going back to where I feel like there's the biggest
potential for any team to get in. And so would
it shock me if we saw shia Wana Gonzaga Prep
instead of Sumner Camus. Absolutely not at this point.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Again, the three A State Finals will be here on
kJ RFM. I'll be broadcasting the play by play of
that from Husky Stadium on Friday evening seven o'clock December sixth,
and the four A Championship Mike Ben and play by
play Saturday, December seventh from Husky Stadium. John really appreciate
these three weeks. You know I'm going to hit you
up again next week to talk about the finals. Happy
Thanksgiving to you and your great families.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
Look forward to it. Thanks for having me on, Greg.
Happy Thanksgiving to you both,
