Speaker 1 (00:31):
Now time for the Health and Wellness Show on one
O three point five FM and five sixty am WVOC.
And we've got a full hour gym at with solid
information for you when it comes to your health and
your wellness. And you're having fun too, John Farley and
Matthew Terry. I wanted to reverse those names for some reason.
John Farley, Matthew Terry, the other guys at Preservation Specialist.

(00:53):
They'll be joining us a little bit later on the
half hour. Our topic today not a fun one, taxes
and taxes and retire vironment. How to be the best
position yourself to h to make that as pain less
as possible. Matt lyons Actually he'll be here there in
a half hour. John and Matthew WI wrap up a
show this morning. Matt from the Carefree Boat Clubs out

(01:14):
of Lake Murray. They just hosted on one of their locations,
UH Reggae Tronic this past weekend. I guess it was right,
big big time had out there for for all. And
this is a lot of what they do over there
at Carefree Boat Clubs. We'll talk about that too, but
we get started now with Larry Harris. He is the
owner of Classic Systems here in Columbia and well not
just serving the entire state, but heck, you're you road

(01:36):
trip all over the place. Yes, you did here. It's
as good to see you. Manant joy to be here.
We talked, uh, I think the last time you were
with us for a couple of weeks back, we talked
extensively about mold and homes and businesses and the detrimental
effects it has on our health. And we'll sort of
talk about some of that. I'm just curious now is

(01:56):
here here we are? You know, it's we're not quite
the summertime yet, but we're we're knocking on the door
of it here as who knows what this horm is
gonna bring when it comes to temperatures, I mean we've
had some extreme it seals like temperature as this spring already.
The hundred gets the worst, the problems become or doesn't

(02:18):
really matter.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Well, the key is the relative humidity. If the relative
humidity inside an environment gets above sixty percent, then airborne
mold can grow. I've been in homes where the relative
humidity was about eighty percent and they've had mold appear
on sheet rock walls. So you just can get into

(02:41):
the duckwork too, So without doing air testing, you don't
know what's going on in there.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Now we'll talk about the testing and the remediation and
then the things the products you have afterwards to keep
that air as healthy as possible for folks. But let's
see again you I mean, you do a test when
you go out and you measure I think you told
before you measure the relative humidity inside the home versus
outside the home. And I think, as you've told us,

(03:10):
if your road to humidity inside the home is higher
than outside, then you've got a problem. Absolutely well, I
guess that's because outside, well, what are you going to do?
You know, it is what it is. You can't change that,
but you hope that the humidity inside your home is
lower than whatever that number is. How do I don't know,
we've really talked about this specifically, But what do you
do if you find your home in that situation?

Speaker 2 (03:29):
It requires a dehumidifier. And see, an air conditioning is dhumidifier.
But see if the ideal relative humidity in an environment
GARY is forty to fifty percent relative humidity income. If
it gets below that, then it becomes so dry it
can cause sinus problems. So if it gets above sixty
percent relative humidity, that's too much moisture in the air,

(03:52):
and morture mixes with dust and that can cause mold
to grow.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
I guess that. For example, are the last home we
lived in. You paid us a visit out there several
years back, and it was in this this really wonderful environment,
and it had a creak out back and a lot
of trees and a very almost a mountainous kind of
landscape in the backyard, but it was so humid. We
just recently, matter of fact, had to replace an outdoor

(04:18):
table that was supposedly rust free, but in that environment
it wasn't rust free. So I guess you have situations
where I suppose you could show up and run the
test and the humidity levels maybe outside are so high

(04:38):
that you know, okay, the homewners is yeah, yeah, but
my inside air human it is less than that it
is outside, but still but it's too high inside regardless,
So you get a dhumidifiers is going to be the right?
Are they all created the same? By the way, They're not.
I knew you'd say that for some reason.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, The dhum metifiers mostly that you buy a big
box store. It takes contains water in a container, and
so you're going to have to empty evacuate that water.
But a lot of the dehumidifiers that I have used
over the years actually has a tube that evacuates the
water outside, primarily used in cross spaces, and so those

(05:20):
are very effective in removing the relative humidity in a
cross space. I guess you could use it in a
home in a home and take the tube to a
commode or a bathtub to or a shower to evacuate
the water, and it's a lot easier that way. You
don't have to empty the container frequently. When you have
a d humidifier that collects moisture.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
You said you mentioned cross spaces. Where's the best place
to put these? Is it in the cross space?

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Well, if you have we've had a lot of clients
that have h fact duckwork in a cross space carea
that it gets the air going through the duck work
and the humidity and the cross space is so high
that the the duckwork actually leaks water. It has condensation
form on the duckwork and it's drifting water on the floor.

(06:10):
So in that case, a dehumanifrus ideal for that because
it'll evacuate that hot humid air rapidly.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
So yeah, one that gets rid of the water by
its right, which you can use in a cross space.
You certainly you would want that there. You don't want to
be going to a cross space every now and then
you have to dump water out. Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
And another problem that a lot of people have with
an HVAC and a cross space is the condensation pipe
can get clogged and then you've got water leaking in
the cross space. I've been in many properties that you've
got a pool of water maybe six or twelve feet
wide because the condensation pipe stopped up. All that water
is going to evacuate the under the house. So that's

(06:51):
why the condensation pipe is critically important to make sure
that it stays clear and not get clogged up.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Interesting because we've talked to this in the past, and
you're going back to the seventies and the energy crisis
we were in about you wh Jimmy Carter was president,
and the new rules that came out that you know,
caused us to button up our homes so tight that
that in itself caused other problems. We talk about it,
but it seems like almost it didn't have any effect

(07:19):
on you know, that flooring and that sub flooring and
what could be coming up from the crawl space. It
seems like that that that creates a lot of our pros.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Well, I've seen some documents that actually say fifty percent
of the air in a home comes from the crawl
space I've heard, and that could be because that the wiring,
the holes that plumbing and wiring come up from the
crawl space are not insulated and that's a breach in
the integriaty of the air inside. So that's why air
testing is so important to identify any problems with airborne

(07:50):
particles that could be airborne mole and so the only
way you're going to know that is to do air testing.
And we if we do an air tests in the
morning and get to the get it to the laboratory,
we'll have the results back the same day.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
So let's uh, let's fall the trail here. So you
start off with high humidity levels inside your home or
underneath your home. Whatever that leads to mold formation, it
could be it's possible. Yeah, Okay, So the humidity level itself,
I don't know if it's if if just the humidity
is too high in your home? Is that inherently bad

(08:25):
for it? For you? It is, of course okay, But
then if it leads to mold formation, now you got
a bigger problem in her. Yah, it's correct. So let's
talk about how you get rid of that mold.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Well, there are several ways to do that. First thing
you got to do is make sure that there's no
excessive marsha because if you've got plumbing leaks or mortial
leaks from an HVAC and an attic, you've got to
stop the water intrusion first. That's number one. Suspis stopped
that morsture intrusion. Then you've got to dry it out.
That's the second priority. And once it's dried down, then

(09:00):
you can use a protocol with an anti microbial and
we have one that we use in a lot of
universities and health care facilities. It's a product called sandy
Shield that has ten percent hydrogen peroxide in it. It's
an organo saline solution that cannot harm anything, and we
fog an interior with that and that ten percent hydrogen

(09:20):
peroxide will kill bacteria and microbials on contact.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
How long does this process take?

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Larry Well I've got a cold air mister with a
gallon of this product that's diluted four parts to one,
and I can do three thousand square feet in an hour.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Oh really, Yeah, that's good size home.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Once you do it, though, how long does it take
to actually remediate the mold?

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Well, once we fog, if there's airborne mold, it kills
it on contact. But if you've got if you've got
visible mold on the sheet rock, you got to make
sure the sh rock is dry. And one thing that
I learned in all the classes and the certifications that
I have is once sheet rock gets wet and it's
dried properly, it becomes harder than it was when it

(10:13):
was initially installed. So that's an interesting phenomenon. But the
most important thing is to identify the problem. We had
a client that we went to their home and they
had water leaks from right under the cabinets in the
kitchen about five and a half feet off the floor.
And so the problem was that there had to be

(10:34):
a plumbing pipe somewhere that the water was leaking. The
client said that there wasn't any roof issues, so the
only other thing it could be is a plumbing pipe.
And we actually did a dental office years ago where
they had a half inch plumbing pipe coming down a
wall and there was mold growing on the wall from
the top of the wall all the way to the floor.

(10:55):
And when we took the sheet rock out, we found
a pinhole leak from a nail that had penetrated that
plumbing pipe and that caused a drip leak down that
wall and cause the mold to grow.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
How often do you run across this where somebody will see, Oh,
they can see some visible mold and maybe a bathroom
for example, especially a maybe a guest bathroom or small
broth them with a shower. That's got to be a
prime spot for something like that, right, and they just
get some kind of cleaner and clean it off and think, Okay,
I'm good. You're not good, right.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
No, they see when you go to a big box
store and you buy a product that says mold killer,
if it was really effective, Geary, it could harm a person.
And that's why the products that I buy can only
be bought by a professional as I am certified to
buy those, because it could be so toxic that the

(11:44):
average person that buys it doesn't know how to use it,
and it could be harmful to them.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
So anything we do, we say, okay, if if if
half a gallon is good enough, I'll use a whole gallon. Right, Well,
we always we always go to extremesst.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Word, but see if you I don't know what you're using,
it's not going to be effective in a big box
store because if it was, it could harm somebody. So
that's why they're not that great. The best thing to
use to kill MOE is ten percent hydrogen peroxide. Now,
we had a client that listens to you frequently and

(12:18):
he bought some airpeer fires from me, and he said,
there's a product in Low's. Interestingly enough, this is what
he said. The name of the product is Harris number one.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
That's quite unique, right.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
He said it has ten percent hydrogen peroxide and it
comes in a gallon container. I have not investigated that,
so I haven't verified that to be accurate, but according
to him it is.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Well to Southern Registrate, that's not Larry Harsimer, No, it's
Harris number one. Okay, So again, let's follow the trail here.
You come out, you investigate the humidity levels inside outside,
you determine if maybe you need a dehumidifier. Do you
do the mold inspection, which I'm not mistaken you can

(13:06):
get results back on that really quickly, right.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah, the same day. If I do it in the morning,
I'll have the lab report back that afternoon.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
So then you then you got your game plan, right,
you know what you're deal You got to do all
that to know what you're dealing with absolutely, So next
step is to or remediate that mold and so then
you're to all of that, but you're not quite done yet.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Yeah. One of the most important things is once you've
remediated everything and got rid of any airborne mole or
visible mole and it's dried out, then the next thing
is to take care of the air. And see that's
one of the things that I've been doing since nineteen
ninety two is air quality. And we have the airpier
of fires that is not a filter. And see a

(13:51):
lot of people buy these filters and if you've got
a filter in it, it can only draw the air
within three feet of that filter, so it's not.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
An airpier fire.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
And you go in in big any big box store,
they have all these wonderful products that say air purefiers.
But they've got filters, so they don't purify the air.
They trap the air, and you've got to bring one
hundred percent of the air to that filter to do
anything with it. Our product duplicates a thunderstorm. It creates negative, negative,
and positive ionization that puts these charges. Particles charge negatively

(14:24):
and positive like a magnet. It makes them clump together,
get heavy, they settle out of the air. Then the
activated oxygen, which is called ozone, oxidizes eighty percent of
the dust out of your environment.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
The secret to this is that you use a.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Level of ozone that is friendly to the environment and
doesn't cause a problem with headaches or fatigue. And see
women's sinuses are more sensitive than men the sense of smell,
so you want to control that amount of ozone. Our
products cannot produce greater than point zero four parts per

(15:00):
million of ozone. The FDA says safe level of ozone
is point zero five parts per million twenty four to seven.
The EPA says point eight, and Oceans says one point zero.
So we are way below most of all of the
federal standards in producing only point zero four parts million ozone.

(15:21):
Ozone is what's outside every day. A lot of people
I asked, do you know why the sky is blue?
And really nobody knows. They said, well, it's a reflection
of the ocean, it's not. The color of ozone is blue.
That's why the sky is blue. The sunlight photo electrics
coming into the stratosphere creates an electrical charge. It makes ozone.

(15:41):
Ozone is nothing but three particles of oxygen. It's called
activated oxygen. The third atom desperately wants to separate and
attached to chemical odors or dust, and it oxidizes it
and converts it back to water, vapor or carbon dioxide.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
And your system's kind of, for lack of a better phrase,
is put that magic in a bottle. That's exactly right.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
And so also got an atroviolent light that creates a
plasma of hydrogen proctide, and so that that kills back
to you in microvis on contact.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
Classic Systems, Larry Harris is the owner, and we'd be
more than happy to come out and do the inspections,
the remediation and gets your breathing clean, pure air and
you get rid of all the mold and everything else.
It's junking things up for you. Larry. Always good to see.
How to folks reach you at Classic Systems.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
And we're back on the Health and Wellness Show one
of three point five FM and five sixty A m
W VOC and uh mister funds in the house, appreciate
that it's bad Lions from Caffree Boat Clubs out at
Lake Murray. How are you, buddy? I'm doing good? How
about yourself? I'm doing good?

Speaker 5 (19:25):
Man.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
We get this rain out of here, we'd be doing
even better good.

Speaker 6 (19:27):
That's the only thing holding back fun on the water
at this point is it's been a it's been a
tough start to the season just because of the weather.
But the days you're able to get out there, it's
it's been gorgeous.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
You guys, I guess you first got involved in this
last year. If I remember what used to be called
I think the love you used to refer to it
as as reggaetronic yep. But at Lake Murray Palooza, correct.
You guys had a big weekend last weekend with that
we did? We did.

Speaker 6 (19:52):
We had what we had the ability to have eight
club boats there with members on them, and what we
gave members at no charge to them is actually access
on the boat VIP ticket, they got food, they got drink,
they got to come out and enjoy it because we
were one of the sponsors of the event. And that's
one of the things that we really try to focus
on it care Free is getting involved in everything that

(20:14):
we can in ways that benefit our members. So our
members got to hop on a boat, drive over to
Fat Frog's Marina, enjoy all the music, drink whatever they
want to drink, eat whatever they can fit in their bellies,
and then we drove them back too, so they didn't
have to worry about drinking and driving or any of
that stuff. And it went great, no issues, no problems,

(20:35):
no concerns.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
And that was hosted again one of your one of
your sites. What last year you did it last year too?

Speaker 6 (20:41):
If I recalled last year, we did it for rift Jam,
which is a different event similar yep, but that was
kind of last minute thing last year I recall correct,
this one was actually played and scheduled. And then we
have August second, I believe, float Chilla, which is a
new chill float Chilla, which is a new on the
water music venue, our music event, and we're gonna have

(21:02):
the exact same thing we're gonna have a dedicated spaces
for care Free boats for care Free members. We're gonna
provide transportation to and from. So really it's a it's
another value add for being part of care Free. No
additional charge, no nothing.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
Because it is a you know, this care Free Boat
Clubs of Lake Murray. But it's it's it's it's a club.
When you think of of club, you think of more
than just getting out of the water on the boat.
It's you know, all kind of suff We were out there, oh,
couple saturdays ago and went out for for a couple
of hours and then came back and and chilled out.
And because you got we were at the Lake Murray Resort.

(21:39):
Oh sure, uh and you got you got the Food's Gator.
We had the Thirsty Gator.

Speaker 6 (21:45):
You it's a cool, cool place with the beach and
everything and the Thursday band going on right there and
Thirsty Gators open to the public, and then the beach
itself is members only, but all care Free members get
a free Beach Club pass of beach Club membership. Again,
just more ways to enjoy this lake.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah, it was. It was a fun afternoon. So it
was a lot of fun, good to hear. So, uh
you got all that going on? You don't don't look now,
but you know for you know, it's gonna be football
season around here. I mean you you guys the last
couple of seasons it had done stuff with your club
members for for football games too.

Speaker 6 (22:20):
Yep, we'll do We'll do it again this year too.
We'll do tailgating at one of the upcoming USC games,
probably when they play University of Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
Don't tell anyone, but my daughter goes there, goes. It'll
it'll be her senior year. I saw her a couple
of weeks ago. You hasn't seen her about a year.

Speaker 6 (22:34):
She came in when she comes into town to visit family,
she gets to work for the club and she gets
to see members that she you know, saw when she
started with me two years ago. And at summertime, my
son works for the club as well. Uh, you know
there's It really has become a lot of fun in
my opinion.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
I enjoy it.

Speaker 6 (22:53):
I just need to figure out what what my wife
can do other than come out and go out a
boat with me, which she does all the time. We
typically leave around noon on Saturday noon on Sunday on
whatever boat a member hasn't taken.

Speaker 1 (23:06):
Except for now.

Speaker 6 (23:06):
We got a brand new boat in and I got
to tell your listeners about it. The brand was a
brand I had never heard of. It's called Trifecta.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
Okay, there's a backstory to this because last weekend, oh yes,
remember we were we had a we had a bizarre
weekend because we had planned to go to Isle of
Palms last Saturday. And I mean if we had left
the house five minutes earlier, we wouldn't have realized what
had just happened. But are something happened on our irrigation system,

(23:36):
which was just installed recently. It's spewing water all over
the timeway. Okay, we're over, the cars already packed, we
get ready to go, right, and I'm freaking out. So
I'm cutting off the water the whole house. By the way, FYI,
in the public interest. If you don't know where your
water band shut off is and you don't have one
of those keys to get one and figure it out, you.

Speaker 6 (23:58):
Can learn when you have to learn. Unfortunately, right see.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
So fortunately I knew how to do that, and uh
and as it turns out, we were able to then
just shut off the irrigation valve itself into the bar
of the house back. But by that time we're like,
it's too late to go to the beach now, gotcha.
So so last minute, you know, you and I are
talking and uh, and you did because because again you
had the labory paloozer going on. Yes, you know, really probably,

(24:26):
I mean, you got a bunch of boats, but it's
pretty rare that really all of them are out at
the same time. Yeah, we have. It was it was
a special weekend.

Speaker 6 (24:32):
Yeah, we have thirty four boats in the fleet right now,
with four more still to come in the next two weeks.
And I remember we were talking and I said, I'm
supposed to get a boat here by noon today, but
I don't know if it's going to make it in.
I mean, it literally was in transport right and I'm
like and I'm like, I haven't set eyes on it yet, and.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
You're going to use me as the as the as
a beta test well, because.

Speaker 6 (24:51):
I know you don't go over the the three thousand RPMs.
So I figured it would be okay, And it ended
up getting in a little bit later that day. So
it wasn't it an on time for you to utilize
but it's a The brand is Affecta, which I had
never heard of, knew nothing about, and I gotta be honest,
it's my favorite boat. No wait, it's it's super cool

(25:11):
look and it rides a lot of times with a
with a try tune, you'll get what I refer to
as a pontoon rattle a little bit, because there's it's
not like a fiberglass boat where it's molded in all
one piece right there. It's basically, uh, you know, tubes
with the platform, with furniture, with railings and everything's kind
of put together. So at high winds, at high speed,

(25:32):
you'll hear a little bit of a rattle. You don't
hear in a bow rider or or a center console.
This one doesn't have anything it my opinion, it's the
prettiest looking boat we got. It goes super fast. For
having a two hundred on it, I think it's about
our fastest one, and we have other boats with two
hundred as well. But however, they built whatever they built,
it's really nice. I fully expect to get more of those.

Speaker 1 (25:53):
Okay, tr So you got news. You don't keep about
more than what two seasons? Two seasons?

Speaker 6 (25:58):
That's the plan. Yeah, and we're at right now rotating
boats out from our first year in business, which was
two summers ago.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
So let me ask the question for you that are
bone was like I formally was how old is your boat?

Speaker 6 (26:11):
I can tell you at my marinas, the wonderful folks
that rent slips for me, some of the boats, I'm
surprised they're still floating right, and people rarely go out
on them, especially if they're older and they know they've
got issues and problems, and that's just a I appreciate
they want to run a slip from us, and I'll
be happy to accept that payment. But every time I
look at an old, beat up boat that I haven't

(26:31):
seen leap leave the slip in all season, I shake
my head and say, for what they just paid for
that slip, they could join a boat club and they
can have a brand.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
Ru Let's let's count the numbers on that. We do
this every now and then. Yep, So you or not
you do run out slips? Weren't members of the club
in it? And the slip is on a monthly basis, right.

Speaker 6 (26:52):
Yeah, it's an annual program program, but you paid by
the month, yep, and it comes out to almost three
hundred bucks a month at my marina's marinas are more
and I think maybe one or two are a little
bit less, but we're about twenty twenty seven to fifty
a year okay for ours, if you buy preseason, if
you buy you know, as the season gets closer, we're

(27:14):
thirty two hundred bucks a year, okay.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
And that's that's that's that's a standard thing. If you're
going to rent a slip, you've rent on an annual basis. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (27:22):
The problem is no one this Lake Lake Marine does
not have a lot of marinas and a lot of slips,
so marinas aren't motivated to rent you a slip the
five months out of the year you really want it, right,
So we tell people all the time, we're happy to
rent you a slip for five months. It costs the
same as a year, because there's just no benefit to
rent a slip in July when you can't rent that

(27:44):
slip come December.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Right, And because you said they're at a premium, because
aren't that many available yep, So say three hundred bucks
a month okay. Now, if you remember the boat club,
Caffrey boat Club, the monthly.

Speaker 6 (27:57):
Dues are three hundred ninety five bucks all.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Okay, So ninety five dollars more a month than the
cost year is the cost of your slip. Okay. Now,
there is that one time initiation fee to join the club. Correct.

Speaker 6 (28:12):
Currently, right now, our initiation fee is three thousand dollars.
That's a one time fee, not an annual fee. On
June sixteenth we go up to four thousand dollars, and
on July first, we go to six thousand, which would
be our full price.

Speaker 1 (28:27):
Okay, So you got about another nine days, yep to
get into a three thousand dollars one time initiation fee.
After that it's to four yep. And then right around
July fourth or so, it's it's it's the five correct.
Is you your full rate price? Full right price?

Speaker 6 (28:42):
And that's you know, at that point you pay no
initiation fee. Ever, again, you can pause your membership if
something happens and you for whatever reason that like a
sickness and you got to go through some sort of
therapy or whatever the case might be, or you just
have a life changing event and you're like, hey man,
I need the this for for a little bit.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
We do that without hesitation.

Speaker 6 (29:03):
All the time, So that way you can kick it
back on and I have to pay another initiation fee.

Speaker 1 (29:07):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (29:07):
We have no training fee, we have no hidden fees whatsoever.
And it's three ninety five a month all in, and
that's our full program. We don't give you a water
down program where you can use these three boats on
these four days of the week and you got to
pay more to get more. We are that is every
boat we have, every location we have across the country,

(29:29):
unlimited usage.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
I'm here on Lake Murray at a one hundred and
fifty some month places across the country, right, yep, yep.

Speaker 6 (29:34):
The number changes pretty much every week, but it's about
one hundred and fifty, maybe a few more than one
hundred and fifty at this point.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
Okay, yep. So let's well, let's look at it this way.
Let's say you pay the full fare, the five thousand
dollars initiation fee. Okay, so you get that out of
the way. Now, Now you're paying three ninety five a month, correct,
versus three hundred first lab Now, if you can go
find a boat that runs for less five thousand dollars,
to be my guest.

Speaker 6 (30:02):
You won't find one you want to be on that'll
run for five thousand dollars. Yeah, and if it runs,
it'll run for a short period of time. But you're
talking with it.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
I'll gonna pay more than five thousand to get it mixed, yep.

Speaker 6 (30:11):
And to do an hourly service on a boat is
about six hundred bucks, you know what I mean. So
you don't pay for that in the club. We do
all those, We do them regularly. And then you have
insurance that's probably gonna run on for an individual thousand
bucks twelve hundred bucks a year on most boats for
an individual.

Speaker 1 (30:29):
Right then you've got the taxes on the boat and
the motor yep.

Speaker 6 (30:32):
And even if South Carolina comes to their senses and
taxes all at one, you're still paying that tax every
single year. It doesn't go away.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
It's like your car.

Speaker 6 (30:42):
So if you add it all up, joining any boat
club is going to be a third the cost of
owning a boat, no question about it. And if you
are one of the adventurous people that say, well I
don't need a slip, I'll save that three hundred bucks
and I'll just trailer my boat. I tell those people
all the time, here's my name and number. Give me
a call in two years your boat will have about

(31:03):
eight hours on it. It'll be worth half of what
you bought it for. And to buy it from you
been there and done that. No one, very few people
will trailer their boat and use it regularly because that's
if your a levels okay, because they like to go
to different lakes and fishing boats are easier.

Speaker 1 (31:20):
But for the families that want to get out there,
I mean, I've lived it, I've done it, and then
you've done.

Speaker 6 (31:25):
That if you're a fisherman. We've got two Falcon bass
boats that are awesome. Everything in the world you need
on them. We've got two center consoles with everything you
eat on them that you can come out and use.
And we've got a couple of fishing ski boats too,
and one fishing pontoon as well. And you can fish
off any of our boats.

Speaker 1 (31:42):
Oh and by the way, they're all GPS equipped, thank you.
They're all GPS equipped. They're all part of every year.
But I don't go out there for a few months
under in the off season. I go back out there more.
Was like, okay, now wait a minute, where am I Well?

Speaker 6 (31:54):
Another good thing about Lake Murray is your cell phone
works pretty much everywhere. Yeah, so if you drop a
pin where you parked your car, you can kind of
find your way back. But most of our boats now
have the full GPS system on the Hummingbirder garment system,
which'll track where you win and you can file the
line back. It was my son that looked at me
the other day.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
He basically got I was.

Speaker 6 (32:14):
Trying to figure out where to turn in this one
part of the river portion of the lake, and he goes, Dad,
just look at the look at the garment, and I'm like, oh,
I could just filew the line.

Speaker 1 (32:22):
Just for all the cookie crumbs, right, absolutely, all right,
So let's let's again rehash quickly as far as that
one time initiation fee three thousand dollars, ye, until June sixteenth.

Speaker 6 (32:32):
June sixteenth we go to four thousand, and then July
first we go to full price, which is six thousand.
And part of that is come July, I'm not real
motivated to get more members in because I'm done buying boats.
So again we stress that member to boat ratio. We're
still at four point twenty five members per boat, so
and I got four more boats to add, so I
can afford to take on some more members without messing

(32:54):
that that member to boat ratio up and I and
then come July first. I don't expect to get my
any people paying full price, but if they do, it's
enough where I can afford to get another boat. Yep.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
You'd like a kid with this, aren't you. Oh it's terrible.
It's I mean, I in your pocket.

Speaker 6 (33:11):
I've got a problem. I've got a serious problem. My
family tells me all the time, my friends, co workers,
employees tell me all the time.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
But I'm having fun.

Speaker 6 (33:20):
Man, I'm having a great time, and I'm for you.
I'm just going to continue it until the bank or
my wife stops me.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
There you go, Mad Lions, carefree boat gloves out at
Lake Murray. Join us out there. The number to call it's.

Speaker 6 (33:35):

Welcome back to the Health and Wallness Show one of
three point five FM and five sixty am w VOC.
Then welcome back into the studio. Matthew Terry, John Farley,
better know as the guys from Preservation specialist. Good morning,
Good morning Gary. Here we are into June. It's hard
to believe it already, June seventh, crazy, and we're going

(36:37):
to talk about taxes. What Okay, I know we're a
week and a day away from estimated quarterly income taxes
having to be Yeah, right, that's right.

Speaker 6 (36:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
I actually got to check in the mail first time
in forever from the IRS a couple of weeks ago.
Do you do that to that thing? We can sign
up up and get emails of what's coming in your Yeah, yeah,
I love it. Yeah, yeah, except for when it's you're like,
what and I see this? But I could see in
the email that it's a check in there, right, I thought, now,

(37:13):
wait a minute, Okay, I paid my quarterly taxes not
on April fifteenth, but you know we had the extension
here on Yeah, I just assume that that that applied
to that too, right, So I thought, don't tell me,
they're just sending it back to me because it got
there late. But then it's like, for two hundred and
sixty seven dollars, I have no idea why. Wow, there
was no explainating explanation, none whatsoever. Yeah, and you know

(37:36):
what I'm saying Uncle Sam never gives me anything nor anything,
so that was kind of weird. But anyway, why are
we talking taxes in June? Why not? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (37:47):
Yeah, Well, you know what what I would say is
it's never too early to begin your tax planning for
the year. You know, obviously here we are in twenty
twenty five. But the reality is is, you know, most
people when they look at how do I reduce my
tax bill, they are very limited in scope of thinking
how do I limit my tax bill for this given

(38:09):
calendar year, which is true, right, no one wants to
pay more taxes than they have to. But the bigger
piece for us as financial planners is we want to
be more forward looking than that. We want to say,
in retirement, how do you reduce your tax bill over
the course of your lifetime? And I'd like to spend
a little bit of time just speaking about most people
they think that their tax bill is actually going to

(38:30):
reduce in retirement because you know they're not going to
be working. But the reality is what really dictates your
what your tax bill will be in retirement is well,
how are you saving your retirement dollars and into what
type of accounts? Because if you're putting all your money
into a traditional retirement account, something such as a traditional
four to one K A four or three B four

(38:52):
fifty seven. All those things simply mean money that you
put in is not tax today, but in the future
whenever you're going to be paying yourself out out of
it to live off of what's going to be taxed
to that point in time. So if you're receiving a
five thousand hour paycheck and whenever you retired, you are
now making a five thousand dollar withdraw the end of
the day, you're paying the exact same amount of taxes.

(39:13):
The second piece that a lot of people don't think
about and consider is you also lose a lot of deductions.
You think about, you know, raising children. You know, up
to a certain point and up to a certain age,
you at least qualify to receive a little bit of
a tax break from that standpoint. But again, whenever you're
inner retirement, more likely than not they're going to drop off.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
Bloomer, that's right, Bill Belichick. Yeah, he's just a wild story.

Speaker 5 (39:43):
I don't think we have enough time to getting all that, man.

Speaker 1 (39:50):
I don't think that's most people's retirement plan right there.
But whatever. Yeah, okay, Sorry, I changed the conversation there
for a moment. I'm sorry.

Speaker 5 (40:00):
Oh no, no, no, but you know again, I mean,
that's just the biggest thing is to say, well, what
action item steps can you take today to kind of
help reduce your your tax bill in the future. And
I know we've talked about this several times over the
last month or a few months, I would say, And
there's always different types of strategies that you can deplore.
For one, while you're working, rather than electing to contribute

(40:22):
into a traditional retirement plan, you can elect to go
into a wrath retirement plan. What that simply means is
that you are paying taxes today, but in the future,
whenever you want to make withdraws from that account, what's
all going to be tax free.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
Right, And that's the beauty of it, right.

Speaker 5 (40:39):
You can also elect to say we can perform Roth conversions,
and simply what a Roth conversion is is simply saying,
I have money that is pre tax uh in that
traditional retirement plan, I want to move it over to
a rough account, and whenever I move it over, I
have to pay taxes. And people often say, well, can
you explain to me Matthew, Why the world would that

(41:00):
makes sense? Why would I intentionally sign up to pay
more in taxes. Well, if it is your belief that
taxes are going to go up in the future, then
wouldn't you say, hey, I want to pay taxes whenever
they're quote unquote on seale and they are much lower
today than what I believe they're going to be in
the future. And if you have that mindset, then those
are the people that that would apply to, and those

(41:23):
are the people that would want to take action. And
that's how we work with families. That's just one of
the strategies that we explore. But that's a huge benefit
that it can provide the people. I was working with
a family last year doing some planning and I said,
you know what, I just want to take a little
bit of time and I want to focus on if

(41:44):
we perform off conversions. Let's just see how big of
an impact that it could really have on your retirement.
Pitch out amen, Yes, for.

Speaker 1 (41:54):
Twenty years, thirty years, Yeah, that's right, the whole thing. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (41:56):
So we sat down, we used our retirement planning software
and we said, hey, let's convert you know, fifty thousand
dollars per year. Let's do this for a total look
seven years. You do not know you can control that,
and it's always really dependent upon how much room we
have left in each specific tax bracket before it bumps

(42:16):
you up to a higher one. But we did the math.
We converted roughly around fifty thousand dollars per year. And
you know they were soon to be retired. Well, the
numbers say that thirty years in the future that just
by intentionally paying taxes today rather than waiting based off
their withdrawal strategy, based off the income plan that we
created for them, it was going to save them over

(42:37):
five hundred thousand dollars in taxes.

Speaker 1 (42:39):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (42:40):
Huge benefit that it can bring to people. Okay, So
this is just the power of intentionally saying with strategic
financial planning, it can really make an impactful difference in
your life. And you just got to take the time
reach out to us. Sit down. We want to understand
your situation, We want to ask you all the questions,
and then we want to help develop a strategy that

(43:01):
is optimal for you.

Speaker 1 (43:02):
And then John, you get away from that whole r
M D thing.

Speaker 3 (43:06):
Yeah, absolutely, okay, Yeah, there's no Yeah, the requirementum distribution
that happens.

Speaker 1 (43:10):
Yeah, and and then this changed, I think in the
last couple of years. Right now, now you talk about
a state planning and leaving. If you leave a four
oh one k uh to a family, to a child,
they're they're going to have to I know my wife
got one from her father when he passed five or

(43:30):
six years ago, and she automatically had to start taking
the R and D out. But even now they're they're
speeding up that timetable right where it's you have ten
years now, You've got ten years now if you're if
you're inherited of a four oh one k or an
ira a traditional that you're going to have to get
all that money out within a decade cause uncle Sam
one's his. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (43:48):
Absolutely, And there are even some that are that are
even uh even just like very obvious, like I'm working,
uh you know, work with some folks. Uh they're they're younger,
they're planning, and the sooner people come in, the more
you can do.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
I mean, you get a lot.

Speaker 3 (44:04):
But they happened to be working with a guy and
they had some money that was not in retirement accounts,
and so he had them just just follow this. He
had them invested in mutual funds, but they really were
looking for growth. Okay, but remember, okay, mutual fund produces

(44:25):
taxes every year if it's not in their retirement account
because there's trading that happens in that mutual fund by
the mutual fund manager.

Speaker 1 (44:31):
Right.

Speaker 3 (44:32):
Yeah, So they were paying taxes every year on money
that they were looking to grow with. And the idea
is you can easily transition this into other investments that
you only pay taxes on when you take it out.
So like for example, and I I just showed them,
I said, Okay, in twenty twenty two, this is how
these mutual funds did. They went down about you know,

(44:52):
which is the market went down. They went down, say
fifteen to eighteen percent, but they also owed twenty two
thousand dollars in taxes because of the because of the
way their investment was set up. And I was like, well,
if we make some adjustments here, you will only owe
taxes when you choose and when you take the money out,
because you're looking for just growth. You're not looking to

(45:13):
you know, so just simple little things like that. And
they were like, what, you know, it was very it
was very surprising that. I was like, yeah, this is
this is pretty basic. You do not for money that
is not in your retirement accounts. Uh, there are ways
to invest your money outside of mutual funds where you
can still get the same diversity versification, but you just

(45:34):
only pay the taxes capital gains taxes when you cash
it out or or or and however much you cash out.
So you're in charge of that, not at the whim
of the mutual fund manager. That's a very basic that's
that's finance one O one.

Speaker 1 (45:48):
You know, Yeah, these are be gonna qualified retirement account
or oil umbrella.

Speaker 3 (45:53):
Yes, but also but you can have it in things
like exchange traded funds SURE, which which act like stocks,
and you only you only pay the tax on those
when you actually sell them. Where's a mutual fund. If
you're in a mutual fund in a non retirement account,
it will generate tax consequences annually because that person is
buying and selling stocks and other things in that account

(46:15):
where you incur tax. So if you're not, you don't
want to be in that in a non retirement account.
You want to be in other vehicles that do not
give you a tax hit every year. It's crazy. So
it not only tax hit every year, so it takes
away from their net worth every year for the twenty
years until they're going to use it. Where we now
we're making the adjustment. We're putting it in these other

(46:37):
investments where you will get the tax hit later on,
but you will only pay capital gains tax and only
when you choose only.

Speaker 1 (46:43):
Yah. Yeah. So let's talk about Social Security, Yeah, and
how that's taxed. Oh, that was part of some discussion,
you know, coming up with one big beautiful bill which
the House passed last months and it's working on and
I know there was some talk at one time. We

(47:05):
do know this that you know, as it stands right now,
over time not going to be taxed. Tip's not going
to be taxed. But a lot of people on Social
Security we're hoping for some kind of a big break there. Yeah.
And I think, as I understand it, certain circumstances at
certain levels or might be. But overall that aside, how
is social Security taxed? Yeah, we expect that to change. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (47:29):
So so you know, originally, let's go back to when
social Security was first started, it was never taxed from
the get.

Speaker 3 (47:36):
Together and then it is.

Speaker 5 (47:37):
Yeah, and it was it was never intended to be
taxed but low and behold. They did the math that
looked at where things were kind of heading, and they said, hey,
we're going to have some issues if we don't somehow
generate a little bit more I'm going to say a
little bit more cash to continue this out forward.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
Well, we know as of right now it.

Speaker 5 (47:55):
Has projected that social security that you know, if some
changes are not made to the entire system, that we
could see some issues coming up. In twenty thirty three
twenty thirty four, I believe were the last kind of
projected dates. But that's why I think is one of
the big points why they more likely than not will
not move forward with the with the no taxation on

(48:17):
social Security. But who's who's to say I know what's
going to happen, because again I don't. I don't have
a magical crystal ball, just like none of us out
there do either.

Speaker 1 (48:25):
But if we did be owning like islands, and yeah,
that's right to worry about it.

Speaker 5 (48:31):
But social security itself, the way it works is if
you have taxfule income not including your social security over
a certain threshold, then your social Security becomes taxable. As well,
So it doesn't take much for a married couple. If
you make over thirty four thousand dollars of taxfule income

(48:53):
whenever you're collecting social Security, then that means your social
Security will also be taxed. If you make over forty
four thousand dollars and you know you're collecting uh income,
then that means eighty five percent of your Social Security
will be taxed.

Speaker 1 (49:08):
So it's so fifteen percent will not be subject taxation.
That's correct tax rate. I'm not just a security but
that that is.

Speaker 5 (49:17):
Correct, yes, sir, So it's it's eighty five.

Speaker 1 (49:19):
Per Yes, sir. Don't you hear?

Speaker 6 (49:21):
That says that to me too?

Speaker 1 (49:26):
Born in the South, I don't know if you can tell.
So anyways, as long as I'm a year older than you, sir.

Speaker 5 (49:32):
I guess I tell you what one of the worst
things Gary is whenever I'm out, I enjoy golf, used
to run, you know, junior clinics and things like that.
I'm just having, you know, five seven year old's just
calling you, sir. You know it just does something to you.

Speaker 1 (49:47):
Sonstand the feeling.

Speaker 5 (49:50):
So anyway, so going back to social Security, Yeah, so
it's a system that I would say that that in
today's age, most retirees, they do end up paying taxes
on their Social Security and there's not a whole lot
that you can do with that unless you have practically
not a whole lot of tax full income in your
retirement years.

Speaker 3 (50:10):
And and and as as Matthew said, I you know,
the system is not completely solvent. So I think the idea,
you know, people can throw around these ideas, but practically speaking,
I would find it'd be very difficult to not tax
it because remember this was it was in the eighties
when Tip O'Neil and Reagan got together and they said,
you know what, we got to do something because there's
not enough money here, so we're going to have to

(50:31):
start taxing.

Speaker 1 (50:31):
And so and that has been what has been the case.

Speaker 3 (50:35):
And I don't maybe there'd be another way around it,
but you got to get your money from somewhere, right,
you know.

Speaker 1 (50:39):
No got to come somewhere. Yeah yeah, so yeah, I
mean what mussel we've talked about for decades now though,
right yeah, yeah, back to Wagon and h typer Gore.
I mean this is and it says held out till now,
but then again, you know, you look at our our
national debt at thirty seven trillion and growing. And then
what about the mood is credit down? Gray? We shared

(51:01):
about that a couple of weeks ago, you know, the
guys were on I mean that how that's I know
it's mortgage rates up, yeah initially at least and uh,
I don't know how that.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
Yeah, we we we have to rein in our debt.
There's no way around it. No body has been good
at it, uh for decades, nobody.

Speaker 1 (51:23):
It's been a long time. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (51:24):
Uh, and and we have to and and I you know,
it's very frustrating for for all of us to kind
of be sitting in from the outside and say, come on,
you guys, do something about this.

Speaker 1 (51:35):
But it's yeah, well, and this goes to the point
that you brought up earlier conversions, Yes, and you know,
going up in the future. Really, if we ever bring
down the dead at all, if we just even stop
definite spending, right yeah, it's starting to probably, Yeah, it
would help. Absolutely. We would probably be on the backs
of higher taxes. You have a bathtub, this flooding, just

(51:58):
turn off the water, you know, you know you haven't
turned it off? Yeah, yeah, right right, Yeah, it's still
wide open. So yeah, you talk about converting.

Speaker 5 (52:07):
Yeah, and that's exactly you know, again, it's not our
job to tell you what to think, but it's our
job to educate you. And you know that's the approach
I always take with all the families and the clients
that I work with as an education first mentality in
the sense I want you to reach your own decisions.
I don't want to tell you that this is what
you should think in your specific situation. It's my job

(52:27):
just to lay out the facts to say these are
kind of the different paths that we can choose to
go down, and how do we help you accomplish your goals?

Speaker 1 (52:35):
And keep in mind that's what we're doing here in
this segment is just putting out information. That's it, not advice,
that's just information, and you deal with it what you want.
But if you want to pick up the phone and
call these guys and get this information straight from the
horse's mouths, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (52:47):
And we and our you know, our stated goal is
to bring a peace of mind. That is our stated
goal for peace of mind in your retirement years. So
it's eight o three nine retire at oh three nine
retire and we're right in the harvestcen area here in Columbia.
