and Weaver heard Welcome back in Clemsonfans. We've got another big contest for
you tonite. Breaking it all downon the Ingles Countdown to tip Off Show
as your Tiger's coming off another heartbreakingloss in a season that has been full

(00:43):
of highs and lows and moments youcan't even fathom. You, you can't
even script these type of games inthe ACC. Where here's Georgia Tech in
Atlanta tonight it's a road game forClemson Georgia Tech eleven and fifteen, four
and eleven in ACC play. RichardWeaver, Yes, that time of year,
man, we can't make sense ofanything, and we thought we couldn't

(01:06):
last week. And as the numberone team in the country goes down yesterday,
it's even more chaos. Yeah, friend, last night we saw the
unanimous number one team, and nobodywants to hold that title of unanimous number
one because it seems to be acurse. Yes, and once you have
that, and Creighton just dismantled Yukonlast night. And this just shows you

(01:30):
once again, We've talked about itseveral times just from a perspective of college
basketball, the parody. There's noone dominant team out there in college basketball.
And yes, you can see someof the usual suspects that we would
expect to be there, the Purdues, the Houston's, the Connecticuts, those
type of teams, yes, obviously, but it just shows you that anybody

(01:53):
can be beaten on any given night. And that's the reality of it.
And now we are in that crunchtime where it is oh so important.
The sense of urgency is here asall of these teams and obviously we'll talk
much more about the acc but allof these teams and all of these conferences.

(02:14):
I mean, it is now thecrunch time of trying to climb the
standings as best as you can,but everybody's running out of time, running
out of time. Indeed, we'lltake a look at the acc standings because
that double by and even Brunell wasasked about this after the game, how
vital that is. You've talked aboutit, and it's as big of a

(02:34):
log jam as we've seen forever, especially since Wake Forest just put the wood
to Pitt last night. I meanagain, other game where you see that
Wake Forest team. We know,we like what Steve Forbes is doing,
but man, Pitt had been ahot team lately. All of a sudden,
they just storm in and take thel and that Wake Forest is that
force seed. Yeah, well,Wake Forest, I think is a really
good team. They're flying under theradar. And for Clemson, that jam

(03:00):
that you're talking about in the middleof the pack with all of these teams
nine and six, with Wake eightand seven with Pitt and n C State
and Florida State and Clemson sitting thereat seven and seven. But you've got
Syracuse with their win beating NC Stateto now get to five hundred and eight
and eight in the conference. Andso that was a significant loss for NC

(03:21):
State to Syracuse. That helps Clemson'schances, but there's still a lot of
work to do for Clemson to beable to get into that elite area that
top four because again, you canhave a scenario playing out where you can
win three games in the ACC tournamentto win a championship winning four games,

(03:45):
that's really difficult. And that's whythat double by is so important and it's
critical that now Clemson is able togo on the road here in Atlanta,
or should say go on the roadto Atlanta because we're here in South Carolina.
Let me get that correct, nottoo far down the road, yes,
but go down to Atlanta and getthis victory because obviously you have the

(04:09):
revenge side, can you avenge thatloss against Georgia Tech, that double overtime
ninety three to ninety But also you'vegot to follow up obviously the tough loss
against n C State And how isthat going to look? Because think about
the past four losses have been byone possession for the Clempson Tigers, n
C State by one point, Virginiaone, Duke one, and Georgia Tech

(04:32):
three. That can take a tollon a team. And that's why this
game is so vital to be ableto go on the road and beat Georgia
Tech. Tigers are zero to fourand one possession games in ACC play alone,
that's terrible. I mean, that'stough. That's tough. I shouldn't
say terrible, because just a brutalit is brutal, that's what it is.

(04:53):
Two and five. Overall, they'vehad a couple of close wins outside
of conference. They're four and twoagainst Squad three opponent. It's in the
net rankings, still on track tomake the big dance here. We'll talk
about that prospect here later in theshow. Two words come to mind,
Richmond when I heard PJ Hall talkafter the game, frustrating and angry.
And those were the words coming fromPJ. Hall as its Clemson team fell

(05:15):
to NC State by the narrowest ofmargins. As old DJ Horn puts that
floater up under ten seconds to play, you get that last possession that I
want to get your take on witha timeout on the board there, but
a game that it seemed like Clemsonhad in hand. I mean, they're
you know, at home, thingsare rocking at the John and you're feeling
like, okay, you're you're rightwhere you need to be in terms of

(05:38):
the winning streak. You're tied forfifth in the ACC with other teams out
there. I would say those wordsfrustrating and angry would aptly describes how everybody
should feel about this very bad loss. It is so frustrating. I was
there at the game, so afterwe did the show, was able to
get over there to Little John andexperience what you talked about. It was

(06:01):
a great environment. N C Statehas the ten point lead there in the
first half, and then Clemson hasa twelve point lead with about ten minutes
to go, and so you're feelingconfident that, Okay, this is the
game that Clemson is going to beable to hold on to. They have
things in control, and then it'sjust a little bit of the death by

(06:24):
a thousand cuts. N C Statejust making some plays, making some plays,
and then next thing you know, then it's tied. And I know
there's going to be a lot ofor there has been, i should say,
scrutiny as far as how the gameended with Chase Hunter. Yeah,
and we can go back to obviouslythe Virginia game second time now that yes,

(06:47):
And if you go back and watchthe video, you could see that
Chase Hunter he was determined this timehe was going to get to the rim
and he did that. And youif you're when you watch the video,
you can see that Chase Hunter ashe's coming across mid court, the defender

(07:10):
turns his hips and at that moment, Chase Hunter has him beat and that's
why he was able to get tothe rim. But at that moment,
also it's right in front of BradBurnell, so he can see that Chase
Hunter has momentum, has the opportunityof basically getting downhill past his defender.

(07:31):
So there's no reason to call timeout at that point because you're in that
flow. You're in that movement,so to speak, getting to the rim,
So why stop Chase Hunter because he'sgoing downhill here? And now you
can talk about from a perspective ofshould Chase have dumped it off to the

(07:53):
chef there? Ian Shefflin was openand maybe Cheflin has an easy layup right
there. You had a tough nightsix from the field, But still that's
a great look for chef it was. It would have been a great look,
no question about it. But Ialso I don't have a problem with
Chase Hunter attacking the rim because hewas also going to look at the opportunity
of making the ref make a calland there was contact there and I know

(08:18):
there were some calls in that gamethat were questionable, and there's a lot
of scenarios playing out where you're lookingat the foul discrepancy how it felt during
the game. But it was fifteento fifteen, so I mean, it's
even you know, so there wasnot that, but it just felt in
some of those moments, those situationalfoul situational files. That's it, John,

(08:39):
and that's what I think Clemson fanswere very frustrated from that standpoint.
And again when I was watching,I mean, it happened right in front
of me with Chase Hunter attacking therim, and there's no question there was
contact, and earlier in the gamethey were calling that, and then right
there at the end they didn't callthat. So I don't have any issues

(09:01):
of not calling a timeout in thatscenario. Again, getting back in transition
defense is difficult, so why allowthe defender and the defensive team to set
things up, especially if you're alreadyoffensively you've got some momentum. Now it's
a different scenario if they're playing reallygood defense and you're just stagnant and there's

(09:26):
no movement. But at that moment, Chase Hunter had his man beat he
hadn't beat I like it. Youknow the fact that Brunell, you know,
there are a lot of fans outthere and Dablehoos talked about the thumb
gangsters that will point to every singlething that happens in a loss and say,
well, there's another example of whythis coach needs to be fired.

(09:46):
And I think what you just explainedencapsulates the nuance we try to bring to
this show in terms of, hey, this is situational basketball. It's a
good look for Hunter there. Theyhad a good opportunity had they called a
time out. Who's to say theywould have had a look even close to
that. So I think it's abad correlation to say, well, now
twice he's had a time out inhis pocket and both times it hasn't worked

(10:09):
out. I just think, youknow, this team has got to just
hang in there, close out strongin the ACC The tough part about it
is they don't have too many gamesleft, especially against teams that are ahead
of them in the conference standings. If you keep looking at the way Shefflin
has struggled from the field. Again, we've talked about that others have to
step up, and I thought itwas great to see in general, just

(10:31):
you got RJ. Gottfred in particularin this game, four of six from
the field. He had a hugenight off the bench, and you know
our guy Joe Girard who had thebig homecoming at Syracuse. Despite this loss,
he was seven to thirteen from thefield, five to five from the
line. He continues to shine Richmondwith twenty three points in this game.
Yeah, and he's been an Xfactor over the past several games. And

(10:52):
obviously it's still a tough loss thereat Little John, but he was the
spark that got the Tigers back intothis game after that ten point deficit in
the first half. So you haveto look at it from that perspective.
When Clemson goes on that big scoringrun there in the second half, that's
where Joe Girard was starting to excel, hitting some key shots there. And

(11:15):
obviously with the chef not in anoffensive scenario, I guess where he was
able to shine. And I thinksome of that had to do with n
C State was playing really good defenseagainst him and some of their size I
think was causing some problems. Andalso I think from a perspective of early
on, PJ. Hall hit somethree point shots, and that seemed to

(11:41):
be obviously a confidence boost from Hall. Yes, what he definitely has,
But then he finishes the game twoof five, and so I felt that
there was some times where he reliedon the three point shot a little too
much based on how he started andtrying to let's get it inside, let's

(12:03):
let's get some opportunities of moving theball around and not just settling for a
three point shot. So coach Bernallhas talked about that in his post game
press conference in the past few weeks, the fact that you know, PJ
needs to stay patient within the structureof the offense and not take those shots
in bad situations as he would deemthem to be. This steat. You
know, look, I don't knowif you're gonna be bothered by it or

(12:24):
not, but I'm looking at itand seeing one free throw attempt for Clemson
in the first half of the gameas opposed to the twelve that the NC
State got to the line for anotherhuge discrepancy in the game. Again,
not to complain about officiating. Thegame was what it was and at the
end there was some controversy there. But DJ Horn give him some credit.
Now, n C State. Thisis a team we talked about that has
been back and forth with Clemson overthe years. Horn was exceptional and down

(12:48):
the stretch making that shot. Gotto give him his flowers there, because
as much as we love to talkabout the Tigers here, that was a
huge win for NC State to staypacing the conference play. No question.
The Arizona State transfer DJ Horn wasa guy that just could not be stopped
on that night against the Tigers. And that's give him a lot of credit.
Obviously, you know from that standpoint, but that just shows you how

(13:11):
good he is. And the transferportal it does help you know some of
these guys, and obviously a bigpart with NC State. They've got seven
transfers that came in to the season, including Ben Middlebrooks who was at Clemson
last year, and we also hadJack Clark was at inc State last year,
so we actually had a trade incollege basketball there. But DJ Horn

(13:37):
is continuing to showcase just how prolifiche is. He had thirty two points
in the loss against Syracuse last night, and so over the past four games.
That gives him one hundred and fourteenpoints over the last four games,
So you can see how prolific ofa scorer he is, and he makes
it look so effortlessly and I thinkthat's one of the fact is there for

(14:01):
Clemson in that loss. They justcouldn't find an answer to stop him.
But part of it is John.As you know, sometimes these guys they
just make better plays. It happens. It just happens. At times.
You can have a defender and weknow how Chase he how he can defend,
and sometimes these guys just make playsover the defender. Like an old

(14:22):
coach told me, they get paidtoo. Yes, yes, no doubt
now the players do in college,so it's just even more impressive on that
front. Hey, Don Mounts andTim Burray will be on the call here
for this game coming up here shortlytip off a schedule for seven pm at
McCamish Pavilion down in Atlanta. Anunderrated athletic rivalry and a lot of sports.
Clemson Georgia Tech, they go wayback. We'll talk about that and

(14:45):
break down the current status of eachteam, the matchups. We saw this
Georgia Tech team in double overtime recently. We'll get richest thoughts on the matchups
here. Coming up on the Englescount down to tip Off Show ninety two

John Lis, Richmond Weaver, TreyFalco in the house getting primed and ready
for another opportunity for Brad Brunel's team. Put together a little winning streak here,
it came to an end with atough loss a couple of days ago
against NC State. Up next,it's Georgia Tech, a team that has

(15:45):
complicated things for Clemson over the yearsfrom time to time, a team that's
always dangerous. Will take a lookat that game in further detail coming up
here later in the show. Isalways brought to you by our good friends
at Ingles Low Prices love the Savingsat Ingles dash Markets dot Com. As
we do every single show, wetake a look at some of Brad Brunell's
post game commentary in the press conferenceand right after the tough loss to NC

(16:10):
State, here were some thoughts fromcoach Brintell. First, just congratulations in
c State Kevin his group. Ithought those guys, you know, they
were very played very well and DJHorn was phenomenal. His shot making was
was outstanding. But they had youknow, they had a week to get

(16:32):
ready, and they were ready, and they had live legs and played played
really hard. I didn't think ourteam was quite you know, sharp the
first ten minutes. I just feltlike we were I don't not tired isn't
the right word, but maybe justyou know, step slow on some things,
and uh, you know, PJand Ian haven't been practicing much,

(16:56):
and I think sometimes it takes awhile for those guys to get used to
the speed of everything. I thinkjust it's a lot faster, and we
we looked like that. But thenI thought we played very well first first
part of the second half. Obviously, I thought huge shots by Joe and
Chase at the end of the halfto kind of get us. But then

(17:17):
we just didn't play very well ina couple couple of situations down the stretch,
and they made a couple of bigshots. I mean, Diarra,
who's not normally a three point shooter, goes three for three. Horn was
terrific. DJ Burns was really goodin the beginning of the game, and
then we you know, I thoughtwe had stretches where we made some good

(17:37):
plays and it was a terrific gameback and forth for a while. And
then you know, I need towatch the film to see exactly how we
kind of the ten point League gotaway from us quick. But in a
game like this with n C State, with the possessions going so fast,
it's you know, it's going tobe kind of that type of game at
times if you don't score a couple. And some of his shot making was

(17:59):
terrific, and unfortunately probably had acouple of bad breaks. We had a
clock deal there with our timers, and I thought it was going to be
a shot clock violation, but theclock stops, so it was a jump
ball. And then ironically the lastcall is a jump ball and we lose
the jump ball. And so wejust had a couple of things go against

(18:21):
us, and uh, you know, we have to be better. We
have to be better so that wedon't put ourselves in that position. We
had a chance with a lead,and uh, we didn't. We didn't
finish the game. It's been aseason of tight window games, close games.
Brenell spoke about this after this contestagainst Playwork. Gerer lost the ball

(18:42):
stolen it looked like PJ is tryingto set a screen. Yeah, we're
coming up to set a ball screen. I maybe should have called time out
there. That could be on me. You know, Joe just made a
good We called a play for Joethe time before he made a big time
play shot, so we were tryingto keep it in his hands and let
him play little little bit. Theycame up and I think we're going to

(19:02):
trap him maybe as the ball screenwas happening, or at least heavy hedge
him. And you know, Ididn't, I don't. I didn't see
all of it. Obviously, therewas a reach in some contact and play
went, play went the other way. Because we're surprised at all that coach
Keats decided to leave DJM when hepicked up his four file. No no,
no, no, you're gonna gowith guys that you know winning time.

(19:27):
You got to go with guys likeyou're on the road. You need
to play those guys. Is therean emphasis on taking the ball at him
hard? You know once he's somebut like it's not as easy. You
know, they're they're doing some goodthings defensively, they're you know, it's
not easy to just move the balleverywhere you went against n C State,
They deny a lot of things, make it hard. They pressure you.

(19:48):
You know, when we have eleventurnovers, it's not terrible in a game
like this, probably a pretty heavypossession game, you know, I mean
we shot for the game. Youknow, it's kind of just I mean
again, it's one or two playsthat go against youre a couple of big
time shots, and then we,you know, were overly critical or overly

(20:11):
satisfied with how things went. Sometimesand a lot's made about the last shot
taken in this game by Chase Hunter. Some commentators out there, some thumb
gangsters, as Debo Sweeney would callthem, says, oh, you know
what, you got to kick thatball out not so fast. Red Brunell
with some comments about Chase Hunter takingthat last shoto taken a time out there,

(20:33):
No, And if you go backand look at it, Chases at
the rim. Now, Chase shouldhave dropped it off in his wide open
on a drop off for a layup. But Chase, Chase made a great
play. I mean, he gotit in there with speed. They did
not do as good a job asVirginia did in the same scenario, and
so he got around him and gotto the rim, and they came over
and contested it hard. It wasa good defensive play, you know.

(20:56):
Obviously you're taking it to draw fout, get to them make a play,
and everybody wants to do that againstVirginia. There we're upset that we shoot
a wide open three and now we'regoing to second guess a guy going to
the rim, you know, andhe could have dropped it off. I
think Ian's gonna make a layup andwe're probably gonna feel a lot better right
now. But you know, Chasemade some big time plays throughout the game,

(21:18):
and so you're just putting the ballin a good player's hands, trying
to put pressure on the defense, and he certainly did that. He just
didn't make the final last play inthose situations in a final second, it's
always your gut to get give itto your players and let them go down
and make not always you're trying toread the game and if you feel like
there's something that you can do,that's, you know, but the hardest

(21:41):
thing. Any coach will tell youthat, you know, they if if
you get the ball out and there'sopen space, you know that that's hard
to guard. The defense isn't set. You know, this was even there
was even a little more space thanVirginia, and there was more time.
And that was a difference too,is you had a little more time,

(22:03):
and at the Virginia game they kindof knew that, Hey, there's really
just main thrust and one other thingmaybe, but really in this situation,
there's enough time that you could haveother other stuff going on. We really
didn't need it. We just youknow, part of the reason they were
guarding, The reason the end wasopen is his man came over to help
and they didn't rotate down Joe's Joewas they were guarding Joe, and so

(22:26):
you know, if they do rotatedown, Joe's going to get a wide
open three. So we just haveChase just has to make the right rd
in these are situations. Coaches practicesituational basketball. They talk about it every
single week. He was asked afterthe game, coach Brenell was how he
handles these situations typically with a limitedclock, is a timeout situation, do

(22:48):
we do a reset? Here's BradBrunell on that late game situation against n
C State. In those situations,in a final second, it is always
your gut to get give it toyour players and let them go down to
make a BA. Always you're tryingto read the game and if you feel
like there's something that you can do, that's you know, but the hardest
thing. Any coach will tell youthat, you know, they if if

(23:11):
you get the ball out and there'sopen space, you know that that's hard
to guard. The defense isn't set. You know, this was even there
was even a little more space thanthan Virginia, and there was more time.
And that was a difference too,is you had a little more time,
and at the Virginia game they kindof knew that, hey there's really

(23:32):
just main thrust and one other thingmaybe, but really in this situation,
there's enough time that you could haveother other stuff going on. We really
didn't need it. We just youknow, part of the reason they were
guarding, the reason the end wasopen is his man came over to help
and they didn't rotate down. Joe'sJoe was they were guarding Joe and so

(23:53):
you know, if they do rotatedown, Joe's going to get a wide
open three. So we just haveChaser has to make the right rate and
a bit of the story has beenturnovers. Clinton has had a few over
the past couple of weeks. Hasit been great? They've cleaned it up
a little bit against NC State,But as Brad Burnell mentioned after the game,
stats can be deceiving. I needto look and see what exactly all

(24:15):
those were. Obviously, the onewith Joe right in front of us was
a was a big one. Ithink we had a you know, a
good action with PJ and Ian andhe dropped it off and I think that
one got knocked away and I'm justlike, shoot the ball. You're at
the you guys are under the you'reright there at the basket. Just shoot
the ball, like we got exactlywhere we want it, and they're trying

(24:36):
to I mean some of that asplayers, right, Like, there's those
dudes who are trying to make goodplays and they're right there, and I
mean, you can't fault them onthat one. The other ones, I'd
have to go back and remember themall. I can't. I can't remember
them all. I think one ofthem is probably the turnover on the off
on the rebound right and then it'sa jump ball, so it's a turnover.

(24:56):
Well, I mean, what lasttwo of the three. I just
told you, like, those aren'tsupposed to get mad at my guys for
that. Like, that's pretty tough. Now, you're a harder coach than
I am. Like, I mean, now you know, is it a
file? I don't know, maybe, but you know those are those are
We sometimes look at stats and they'revery misleading on things. You have to

(25:19):
really watch the game. When youhave an up and down season, although
you're still in the top thirty fivein the net rankings and you're well on
your way to the Big Dance,it appears it's important to keep your team
together. Here's Brunelle on how tokeep the team motivated and moving forward in
the right direction despite the up anddown nature of the season. It's not

(25:41):
just playing a team that beats you. Obviously, Georgia Tech had a nice
win tonight. I guess you know, we want to win for us,
Like these guys, man, howhard we all work. Like the amount
of time that everybody puts into thisthis is you know, that's a disappointed
locker room. I mean, youknow, and there's so many good plays

(26:02):
that were made by our players inthis game that you know, that's that's
why these games are so hard andso painful for coaches, players, fans,
I mean, everybody. It's butthe players and coaches. I mean
the amount of work that goes intogetting ready for a game, the amount
of film coaches watch, the amountof time that the players you know,
prepare and put in to get itand then you know one or two plays

(26:26):
doesn't go your way. Man,I talk to you guys a lot.
It's it's not easy to fill yourtank back up and get ready to go
again in forty eight hours. That'swhat's hard. You know, It's not
football where you have a week. You know, n C State did have
a week. Maybe that helped thema little bit. You know, we
all kind of get a break likethat. Sometimes you get an extra day
and somebody else doesn't. It's kindof just part of it. But you

(26:48):
know, give those guys credit. They were really ready to play and juiced
up, and they played very well. And I thought we played well for
most of the game. You know, it's you know, you got to
coach your guys, You got tocorrect mistakes. There are certainly things we
got to correct, but uh,you know, I'm proud of the way
our guys competed and and a lotof the playmaking and shot making and tough

(27:11):
things they did. Now one thingwe've seen Ian Shefflin PJ Hall not on
their A game the last few weeks. Again, the stats don't tell the
full story, but slow starts forPJ and Ian both. What's up with
that? Here's Brunelle on what's beengoing on there and some praise for r
J. Godfrey. I guess youtalk about, you know, the early

(27:32):
struggles. It's just hardy at PJand I and kind of into the flow
and I try to work around that'shard. I don't know how to do
it. I mean I can't.There are times we just can't. We
can't practice them. I mean,like, I don't know if they'll make
it through the season if we do, and so you know, you just
you know, you do the best. You can't. I mean, they're

(27:52):
going to have to realize that. We've talked to them about it a little
bit, you know, but atthe end of the day, just having
them fresh and ready to go isyou know, and feeling good is much
better. And they're not always goingto feel good, and they don't feel
good all the time, but youknow, they're giving us everything they have
and obviously we're very appreciative of that. But you know, I thought r

(28:18):
J. That's where RJ helped us. Thought RJ was live. I thought
he was great, tremendous energy, live body, made some really aggressive plays.
I was really proud of RJ.Tonight. Bren Now closed out the
press conference with thoughts on a fewissues. Here some of the positives from
the loss. Who talks about thefree throw shooting disparity. He saw hunter

(28:41):
Tyson ran into one of his formergreat players in this game, and the
double by in the ACC Championship, how vital that is. Here's this from
Brunel Couch again the positives tonight,You close the first half well out there
being down eight and you went ona thirty two run. Kind of all
Simon sayings together. So how doyou take those positive movies towards to tech.

(29:03):
Yeah, obviously we'll we'll watch allof it, like we're gonna watch
the whole game, but we're gonnawatch. We always watch, you know,
positive clips, and then we watchedteaching clips, you know, but
we're always reinforcing positive things that ourguys do on both ends of the floor
to show so they can see,you know, and we will do that

(29:25):
again for this game. So yeah, I mean it's you know, and
our guys know that, like theyyou know, nobody wants to really we
don't want to think about that rightnow, but that'll be part of the
message, you know, Monday.Do you have a good visit with Hunter
Tyson? I did not very longthough, unfortunately, but you know,

(29:47):
proud of that guy, obviously, love him to death and unbelieve by ambassador
for a university and program and andjust uh, you know, it's good
to give him a big hug andjust tell them how proud of I am.
At the end of the first half, like the disparishing parts of between
each team was like trips to thefree throw line. Yeah, so I
know you guys had NC State twelvehad one. But coming into the second

(30:11):
half, it seems like you'll playeda lot more physical. Yeah, a
lot more trying to get those foulsyou got sent a lot of more and
kind of equalized that number. Yeah. I think that was Yes, Obviously,
we talked about that at halftime thatwe just didn't feel like we were
as aggressive as we needed to be, and we weren't. We were a
little bit behind, stepped behind fora while in the game. I just
felt like we were half step, you know, late on some things and

(30:34):
made a couple mistakes that we talkedabout in scouting and let Horne get some
shots early. You know, ourbench made a couple of mistakes, and
that's you know, that's problematic. You know, your guarding an elite player
and we have a letdown and giveup a couple of shots and that happened
to us a couple of times earlyin the game, and he got rolled

(30:56):
a little bit, and uh,you know, we just have to be
better. As you talk about howimportant a week of rest is, is
the double buy in the a SECtournament in the back of your mind as
all as you go through. Yeah, oh absolutely, Like I think that's
part of why we're all upset today, you know, is this would have
been a big win to push us, you know, push us ahead of

(31:17):
uh maybe what Pack calls the Globor somebody one of those guys used to
call it the Globe. We're allkind of together, and that's kind of
what I'm talking about. I thinkwe have a really good league. I
think we have a lot of reallygood teams, and winning is hard,
and you know, most games comedown to a couple of minutes, a
couple of plays, and somebody pullsaway at the end, and unfortunately tonight

(31:38):
they made the plays at the endto win. When it's all said and
done, the ACC tournament right aroundthe corner. Battling for position is key.
Will continue to look at the standingswhere teams stand right now. But
it was a tough loss for Baniland the Tigers seventy eight seventy seven at
the hands of the NC State wolfPack. They moved to six ten nine.

(32:00):
Clemson's seventeen to eight. They's sevenand seven in the conference, and
there's a lot brewing right now interms of conference play. We'll talk about
that. We'll get into some ofthe top twenty five story lines. Bracktetology
season is here, baby, anda preview of Georgia Tech. A team
that hasn't won a lot of gamesthis year, but boy, when they've
won lately, especially these last threewins they've had, been he gets some

(32:23):
damn good teams. It's Georgia TechClemson. You've got the Ingles count down

Is Rich has chronicled over the yearsa lot of crossover history with those conferences.

happening on the hardwood. Always afun time of year. Shout out to
Melissa Level, Ruby Downs, CarolineTaylor, the whole group that gets done
at iHeartRadio and our partners at Ingles. They're a great team. We're a
great team. We are. Welove talking hoops this time of year.
For a football fan like me,you're getting that funk where it's sort of

(35:28):
the dead zone, the dead periodwhere football goes away for a minute.
Of course, you got the draftcoming up and all that good stuff.
But basketball is in full form rightnow. So many big games, not
only tonight, but have happened overthe past couple of days. And again
you see teams like South Carolina withLamont Paris off to a fast start in
the SEC even they have taken abit of a stumble of late action yesterday

(35:53):
in the top twenty five. Howabout number one Yukon going down at the
hands of Creighton, great and teamwe've talked about time and time again on
this show. Eighty five sixty sixwas the final In this game, number
one team in the land goes down. There are no guarantees this season,
all the way to the top ofthe leader ward there with the first ranked

(36:15):
team in the country. They fall. Tennessee survives at Missouri seventy two sixty
seven, have about number eleven.Baylor goes down to BYU last night seventy
eight seventy one final and provo numberseventeen. Saint Mary's holds on and beat
San Francisco seventy to sixty six.Another upset in the top twenty five.

(36:36):
There were several last night. UtahState, a team that Richmond has talked
about on this show as being aprominent team to keep an eye on.
They get the big win at home, upsetting number nineteen Sandy Aego State.
Texas Tech survives eighty two eighty oneover TCUs. A lot of compelling games
happening there, big action going ontonight, some in progress right now.

(36:59):
You got number twelve and only takenon Penn State. Duke number eight in
the land right now, traveling toMiami again. Anything can happen in the
ACC We know that we've seen thatas recently as when Clemson lost to Georgia
Tech a couple months ago. Anythingcan happen. This duke team travels to
Miami, tip off seven pm tonight, Number twenty four Florida traveling to Tuscaloosa

(37:22):
to take on number thirteen Alabama. Both teams notched up at eighteen and seven.
That game tips off at seven onESPN two. How about the Dayton
Flyers, folks only four losses totheir names so far this season. They're
twenty one and four, traveling toan always dangerous George Mason team. They're
seventeen and eight. That game tipsoff again at seven pm on ESPN.

(37:45):
Plus to Paul, they are threeand twenty two right now. Tough season
for that group. Number seven Marquettewith an opportunity to move up the ranks
there they're nineteen and six. Theyhost to Paul tonight, nine pm,
tip off on FS one. Here'sKentucky again, a team we can't seem
to figure out. They're seventeenth inthe country taking on LSU, who comes

(38:07):
off the big upset win over SouthCarolina last week. Eighteen and seven.
Kentucky thirteen and twelve LSU. Thatgame is down there in Baton Rouge,
tipping off at nine pm on ESPN. And then you got number twenty two
Colorado State taking on a very goodNew Mexico team. They're also twenty and
six. Both teams are late nighttip off ten pm on the CBS Sports

(38:29):
Network. Don't know if we canmake it up for that one us old
heads out there, but we willcertainly do our best in try. Just
you know what, college hoops afterdark is the best kind of college hoops
fan. It really is grit afterdark. We saw that a couple of
weeks ago. Always compelling in theACC. Here's some action tonight. Of
course, you got Clemson Georgia Techseven pm. Don Munson Timbrey on the

(38:52):
call. We talked about Duke Miami. That's seven pm as well. Notre
Dame in Louisville. A couple ofteams at the bottom of the barrel right
now. They're traveling to Louisville toplayed this game. Notre Dame. Is
that the seven pm top off aswell? On ESPN U last night,
Sarahcuse tops in C State. Theup and down nature of the ACC.
We win one, we lose one. Syracuse had a tough loss to Clemson.

(39:15):
They've come back and rallied. Nowin C State after beating Clemson,
loses in this game Florida State. They get a big win eighty four to
seventy six over Boston College and wakeForest. How about this story. You
know, Pitt was coming off somegreat wins at winning streak going there.
Jeff Capel's team playing some great basketballright now. Wake Forest a ninety one

(39:37):
to fifty eight win over Pitt lastnight, unbelievable. As wake Forest was
shooting the lights out. Kevin Millerdropped eighteen points, Hunter sillast seventeen.
They routed him by a margin ofover thirty points in this game, and
that puts wake Forest in the positionnow a fairly good prominence in the A

(40:00):
see race. Will take a lookat the standings here as we sit right
now, just before tip off betweenClemson and Georgia Tech. You got the
tar Heels right now twelve and threein the conference, number one standing right
now twenty and six overall, Dukeright behind him eleven and three, along
with Virginia, a team that youknow, hey, can we figure out
Virginia after they're tough loss to VirginiaTech, But what they did to Miami

(40:22):
a couple of weeks ago, holdinginto what like fifteen points at halftime.
Virginia sitting there eleven and five inthe conference, and there's wake Forest.
That's why that game last night againstPitt was so instrumental. It broke the
tie, so to speak, atleast in the interim. A lot of
basketball left here, but wake Foresthas a stranglehold on that four seed that

(40:44):
double bided that Brad Burnell talked aboutearlier in the show. They are nine
and six right now. Only threeteams at this juncture in the ACC have
more than ten wins in the conference. And then you had this fascinating log
jam with at least half the conferenceat five hundred or around here we go
number five, it's Pitt at eightand seven. They're seventeen to nine overall

(41:07):
in c State. We talked aboutwhat happened to them last night. They
moved to eight and seven after thatloss, sixteen and ten overall. Florida
State still hanging around in the mix, at least in the standings. They're
one game back of Florida State. They're one game back of wake Forest eight
and seven. Right now, Clemsonseven and seven. Everything looks good in

(41:30):
terms of tournament time, bracketology, net rankings, But if you want to
challenge for an ACC basketball championship inthe tournament. They've got to start winning
some conference games down the stretch, put together a winning streak. They can
get the double digit wins in conference. We'll see where we go from there.
Syracuse hanging around. They're only onegame back in the win column to

(41:50):
Wake Forest for that number four spot. They're eight and eight. Virginia Tech
with the big win last night, seven and eight they stand right now,
and then you Boston College Miami bothat six and nine. Never count them
out, but it looks like it'stoo late for them to catch up to
the four seed. Rounding it outis Notre Dame at four and ten,
Georgia Tech at four to eleven. But listen, they beat Clemson. One

(42:13):
of those four wins was against theTigers in double overtime. We'll talk about
that game in a minute. Andthen Louisville. It just continues to be
a really tough struggle right now forthat team. They are three to twelve,
eight and eighteen overall as we speak. We talked about the game just
a minute ago. Clemson Fallington cState just a tough one, and they've

(42:35):
had some games like this where you'vehad to bundle some of the diversity and
channel it into positivity and motivation intothis next game Georgia Tech. The thing
about this team, and Rich andI are going to talk about matchups here
in a minute after the break. The one thing about this team is it's
no longer a trap game. It'sno longer one you can overlook. It's

(42:57):
not one you can say, allright, you know what, Georgia Tech.
Look how far down the standings theyare. And Brunell has talked about
this, and so have we.The nature of the ACC is so competitive
right now, more so than everthat you come on this game tonight against
the Ramdlin Wreck and there are noguarantees, absolutely no guarantees that Clemson is
going to win this game. They'rejust too inconsistent. For instance, Shefflin

(43:22):
and I love Chef only seven reboundsand that's I say, only that's low
for him. If he's not doubledigits, that's a problem. Especially when
he's one of six from the fieldof three from downtown. That ain't gonna
cut it. PJ Hall, asBrunell has talked about, slow starts a
little bit in the first and secondhalf for PJ, hes still kicked in
eighteen points in that loss to NCState Gerard playing lights out again four to

(43:45):
seven from Downtown, twenty three points. Shooting was good, but not great
in this game. For Clemson,It's gonna have to be better tonight against
the Ramdin w reck of Georgia Tech. A game in which you'll hear our
good friend Don Monty and of coursehis cohort Tim Burray on the call right
here on ninety two point five WSC. Coming up next, rejoined by Richmond

(44:07):
Weaver here as we go through somematchups to look for tonight as Georgia Tech
takes on your Clemson Tigers. Ninetytwo point five WSC. This is the
Ingles Countdown to tip Off Show, ninety two point five wd S is the
Upstate's new home for the Clemson Tigers. For the one and forty six time

(44:38):
in program history, Clemson's taken onGeorgia Tech on the hardwood. Clemson Leeds
seventy seven sixty eight all time.In this series. That's Richmond We've ro
I'm John Elis Trey Falco of theHouse Ingles count Down to tip Off Show,
wrapping up here on WSC. RichWe've talked about it on the Ingles
Tailgates Show. How much of arivalry this is between these programs, and

(44:58):
certainly it doesn't fall on you interms of looking at this and saying,
hey, I know for firsthand,I'm Rich Weaver. I was a part
of this program. There is somehistory here with Georgia Tech and Clemson,
a lot of history. And youtalked about the one hundred and forty six
meeting that will happen tonight. Soout of one hundred and forty five times

(45:19):
up until this point, that's morethan thirty greater than Georgia Tech has played
against any other ACC opponent. Andthe series dates back all the way to
nineteen twelve, nineteen thirteen season. And this is what's fascinating. Can you
guess who was the head coach ofGeorgia Tech at that time in nineteen twelve

(45:43):
the first meeting for Clemson and GeorgiaTech. Oh boy, you know what,
I'm going to take a pass onthis one, but I'm sure it's
going to hit me right in theface, be like, how did I
not know this? No, youwill not know this because this is Cookie
mcgella cutty something like that. Thisis crazy. John Heisman, Oh,

(46:04):
yes, you know football, Gooddamn it. I knew this football joked
about it. I was thinking timeframe. Was he that old? Yes,
he was. Wow, it goesway back. Yeah, John Heisman
shared among programs, so Tuggle woreof the Heisman contect. He did both
the football and basketball. That's howtimes were different one hundred years ago in

(46:25):
college sports. All right, Solet's talk about this Georgia Tech team.
Obviously they are not where they wantto be in the course of their season,
but let's look at what they've donerecently. Here. Look, they
beat Clemson in double overtime. Theyalso beat North Carolina and by the way,
they're coming off a win against Syracuseand also beat Duke. You've got
some wins on that schedule that younot only see this Georgia Tech team because

(46:49):
you played him. You know, you gotta take him serious. There's no
trap games in the ACC. Whenyou play Georgia Tech. I don't care
what the record is. Yeah again, don't let that record fool you.
Obviously Clemson fans know that because Techbeat Clemson in that double overtime loss that
we talked about. But yes, those three quad win wins Duke obviously,
Clemson and North Carolina and Georgia Techis right now second in the conference in

(47:14):
rebounding per game at thirty eight, and that's only behind North Carolina. So
it has a scenario where Georgia Techdoes do things really well, and that's
what you have to be careful ofbecause you can look at it from a
perspective of yes, they've lost sevenof their last nine games, but again
they're in Atlanta. This is goingto be a difficult scenario from that standpoint,

(47:37):
and how will Sheeflin, how willPJ. Hall? How will they
be able to respond and the restof the guys in terms of these close
losses that the Tigers have been under. And also there's now at this point
of the season, you're having ascenario where you're starters, they're not practicing
as much, and especially Sheeflin andPJ. Hall, they're not starting,

(47:59):
they're not practicing as much as theynormally would because you got to stay fresh
for the season. So it's goingto be a big part of the success
for Clemson that these guys have gotto come out and be hot early on.
Get this step. We talked aboutclose games, the same can be
said for Georgia Tech, tied forsecond most in Division One with eighteen games
decided by ten or fewer points thisyear. That's second most in Division One.

(48:23):
Good team on the cusp of beingvery good, but these close losses
have bit both these teams, noquestion about it. And Damon Sodomeyer is
doing a great job Georgia Tech inhis first year. So this is not
going to be an easy task forthe Tigers. And so you're going to
have to PJ Hall, You're goingto have to play the superstars. Joe
Girard is going to have to continuehis hot shooting, great stuff as always

(48:45):
for Trey Falco, for Richmond Weaver, I'm John Lis, you got Don
Munson, Tim Burray coming up livefrom Atlanta. Keep it locked here ninety
two point five WBSC for Clemson Basketballall night long. We'll see you next
time on the Eagles count Down totip Off Show
