Speaker 2 (00:16):
Hey guys, welcome back to our episode of the podcast.
My name is Kevin Powell. I'll always say it, I
love talking to bands. It doesn't matter what genre, it
doesn't matter what experience level. It doesn't matter if it's
live in person, it doesn't matter if it's zoom, it
doesn't matter. I love it. I love getting to know
these bands. I love getting to let you guys know
more about the bands. I also love social media now
because it's so easy to just learn about a band
(00:39):
and start talking to him immediately. And that's kind of
what happened here. It was all through like mutual content.
If you guys remember Mike Hiaru interview, Well that's how
I got introduced to these guys. So we're gonna be
introducing Thin the Herd. How are you guys doing today?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Not too bad, not too bad, happy to be here.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Happy to be here. I appreciate you guys being on.
We got a couple of guys with us right now,
we might have another joining us. What do you guys
do in the band?
Speaker 3 (01:04):
I am Levi and I do vocals.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
My name is John, and I played bass.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Okay, so we got Levi and John and who might
be joining.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Us Caleb, he plays guitar for the band.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Okay, So you guys got a new song out right now.
It's called Drained. And you know, we were talking back
and forth on Instagram production love. I'm a sucker for
good production and this is right up there. So can
you share a little bit more inspiration behind that latest
single and kind of like your thoughts and process going
into creating this.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
So this was before John and EJ had joined. This
was just a me and Caleb project. And Caleb literally
said before making the song, he said, I just want
to make the heaviest song we've ever written. And really
that just kind of opened it up into like how
much freedom we had because we're suckers for that stuff.
(01:57):
Just the low tuning guitars, the breakdown, and really the
inspo for it For me vocally too. After getting the
track back, I was like, oh, man, like this is
a really dark and heavy instrumental and It really opened
up the vocal possibilities for me to talk about what
I wanted to talk about.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Now we're going into lineup changes, so you guys get
a little bit of a lineup change. What you know,
what's the new lineup bringing to the dynamics here?
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Wow?
Speaker 6 (02:23):
So really we had EJ from Two Sides of Me
join and he's the vocalist for their band, so funny enough,
he's now our drummer and with him he is very
creative when it comes to making feels. That was something
I struggled with previously doing songwriting because I'm guitarist by heart.
I don't really know how to play the drums, so
programming drums and writing drum parts I struggled with. But
(02:46):
Havinghilm with that to help with that was like huge
improvement for when it comes to our writing. And then
John joined the band and he came from a previous
band that him and EJ were in called Villa Five,
and he played bass for them. But we were looking
for a basis like good bassis for a while. The
one we had in the passed a little bit wishy washy. John,
(03:11):
on the other hand, very great, like he came on
instantly had ideas, instantly was wanting to co operate and.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Help us out with writing new songs, new bangers.
Speaker 6 (03:22):
And he's just great personality, great to get along with, sweetheart.
But we took him to Florida with us for the
music videos and he's been absolutely amazing. So the new
lineup is thank you.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
I appreciate that. Man.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
You're saying he was contributing and like being a band member. Yes, yes,
I wish I had a confetti gun right now it
happens the balloons dropped down from the ceiling, because.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah, no, maybe one. I'm for sure.
Speaker 7 (03:55):
I'm extremely excited for this opportunity. One of the things
that like really dropped like threw me too. Like I
had talked to Levi I initially I got to talking
to Caleb like after I had like you know, like
I think the first time we talked was the first
time we met up. But Levi and I like we're
discussing a lot of things like before them offering me
the spot regarding like you know, direction and mindset and
(04:17):
you know, just the way we wanted to handle things
as a band, to be agreed on everything basically, And
it has been just a great experience so far. Like minded,
you know, workhorse people in the band. Everybody's extremely talented
at what they do, and like, we're very excited for
the future because we are going to be a force
to be reckoned with.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
So this is where I get my other confetti gun
at Yeah, just like yes, so radiating all spouts. It
makes me excited. So you guys should be excited too.
So with that being said, where are you guys like from?
Are you guys like spread out? Are you kind of
like in one region a little bit?
Speaker 5 (04:56):
We're spread out across Virginia. I am currently from and
I'm about to move to North Carolina. I guess John
and Caleb go ahead.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
I'm from Mount Sydney.
Speaker 6 (05:07):
It's pretty much the sticks, nothing out here, and I'm
all by my loan so I'm the only one over
here on this side.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
So I live in Richmond, Virginia.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Very nice. What's Virginia over here is we're not too
far away. Richmond was really cool to visit. I think
I can't remember when it was, but anyways, songwriting, you
guys were talking about how this song came out before
lineup change. The lineup change has now already happened. What's
happening now? Are you guys kind of like hammer away
and stuff?
Speaker 7 (05:33):
Now?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
What's going on?
Speaker 5 (05:34):
We are currently working on a song with our producer,
so that's been our first full project together as a
full band, and then we have another song that was
the previous lineup's work. But right now we're just currently
hammering stuff together for the first time, and that's been
so far really awesome because it's been the first time
(05:56):
we've had a full four piece band where everyone is
cantributing and writing ideas, and that's been super awesome to
have for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
So let's say someone finds out about you guys, and
you guys have a show coming up, and they walk
in and they're, you know, waiting for you guys to play.
What can someone expect out of a live show from you?
Speaker 3 (06:16):
You better much? You're better much.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
I think a lot of energy, for sure. That's one thing.
Speaker 7 (06:21):
You're gonna definitely get a lot of energy. I've seen
everybody's like stage presence and everything, and of course playing
in a band with each j before, and you know,
seeing videos of Levi and Caleb doing their thing. I
think it's it's gonna be a lot of fun for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Do we have anything scheduled with you guys coming up?
Speaker 5 (06:38):
We have a show in Lynchburg with Funnily Enough Two
Sides of Me, which is like our brother band and
a sense of purpose, and then we have some shows
that are unannounced but will be announced relatively soon.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Okay, cool. So with that, I want to talk about
Everyone likes to talk about the scene, right, It doesn't
matter where you're from. In the UNI United States, were
not seen is a big thing. People will talk about
community and this and that. Do you guys have an
opinion on I guess the metal core scene today, Go
ahead and share individually. And how do you guys see
(07:13):
thin the herd kind of fitting in?
Speaker 3 (07:15):
That's a that's a tough question. I think.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
I think what I like to see now is bands
aren't scared to be heavy because we've had a resurgence
in what I call pissed core or what a lot
of people call pissed core, bands like Thrown.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
I'm sorry, did you say piss core, piss he pissed core,
pissed core, pissed core? I thought you said piss corps.
Speaker 8 (07:44):
With William murder Face yeah, Clark, Yeah, but make fans
like Thrown Heaven's Gate bands like that are just like
having this resurgence of popularity.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
So it's cool to see that bands aren't scared to
be heavy in the metal core space. That's really I'm
just I'm just hopeful that there's a space for us
and it's a little more inviting to be a heavy
band nowadays.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
I think agreed.
Speaker 7 (08:08):
It's it's been getting you know, a lot more mainstream
over the past couple of years from what I've seen,
Like it's you know, of course, with social media and
you know, algorithms and for you pages and all that stuff,
it reaches a lot more people. And then you know,
people who had no clue about it, you know, who
are just not surrounded about it, are finding out about it.
They're like, oh shit, this is like this is cool,
(08:29):
Like I can be a part of something, like I
can you know, be involved in my scene. And it's
been like a very you know, especially after COVID, you know,
coming out from that, everybody wasn't going to shows, and
then everybody was just like I need to like do something,
and a lot of more people found it.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
You guys prefer I don't like to harp on COVID ever,
But you know, it's a good talking point. Do you
guys remember going we're playing shows pre COVID.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
We were actually a COVID baby band basically, Like I
think think this band existed basically because COVID happened and
me and Caleb were we met. Actually the band didn't
start technically until twenty twenty three, like we didn't start
writing music. But I think as a product of COVID,
we were just like we're stuck in our house. We
(09:16):
love music so much, like we just want to start something,
and I think realizing.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
How easy it can go away.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Really, I think, especially for me, it was like, Okay,
I need to like start doing this because you never
know what might happen in the future.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
So we talked about pissed core like throwing a Heaven's
Gate and all those fun bands too. I'm actually waiting
to see the new Varials. I want to see what
that's going to sound like.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Because did you see them on this last tour that
they did.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I didn't see them, but I know, like the guy
from Cell was filling in AKA, I don't know, it
was it was awesome. I don't know if he's the
new vocalist now or not. And I don't know what
happened before.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
I don't know. Yeah, but they haven't said thing.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
But LEVI and I saw them in Richmond last weekend, right,
it was like last weekend. I think they were phenomenal.
I think I've seen Burials probably like four or five
times now, and that was easily one of the best
best times I've seen them in terms of sound and
just overall show quality. They were incredible. I thought they
stole the show that night. That's the pisted core resurgence
(10:23):
right there. That show that was thrown Burials, No Cure,
Heaven's Gate, and that was a packed show.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
That was a packed show.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
And I mean, you would talk about the bands aren't
afraid to be heavy anymore. Let's take the newest Whitechapel
album for example, right immediately immediate people loved it and
they're like, yeah, why weren't you doing this the entire time?
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
I get it. You don't want to do the same
album every time, and you know, over however many years
that was, maybe you want to do something different. They're
playing either Incarceration or they're playing one of the bigger
festivals this year, so I'm listening to that Spotify playlist
going through shuffling. I'm just either working out or driving
(11:06):
and one of the songs from one of the albums
I didn't really care for came on. I was like,
who is this? This is a really good rock, hard
rock song. It's White Chapel. I was like, you're good.
But after a while, yes, people are like, we want
the heavy. Yes, we're just I'm glad you guys were heavy.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
What's up everyone, We're soft spoken.
Speaker 6 (11:25):
You're listening to Kevin Powell podcast.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Be sure to check out our interview and stream Martyn Now.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
It's two thick influences other than the ones we mentioned
that kind of make you guys sound the way you do.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
I would say, Caleb, you might have a better idea
of what influences us, because really my influence for writing
vocals is really Caleb. I just match whatever energy Caleb
kind of has given me in the past.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
That's cool.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
So, I mean, honestly, my so I grew up on
like Breaking Benjamin and bands like that, like the hard rock.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Creed stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
But as I got older, I got into the more
heavier stuff, and at this point I'm just pretty much
all pissed Corps every now and now listen to some
melodic stuff. But like when I started writing Thin to
Herd songs, I'm like, I just want to make people
be angry. I just want people to swing and hurt
each other in the pit and try to cause violence
(12:23):
and that'll make me happy. So yeah, really bands like Thrown,
especially Burials. Burials is a huge one for me.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Dealer, the old school Dealer.
Speaker 6 (12:33):
Those first two EPs, that's like prime Pissed Corps stuff
like that.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yeah, just heavy sweep. So I want to I don't
want to assume this when I was listening to you guys,
and you know, if I'm dead wrong, sorry, Breakdown of Sanity,
you guys like any influence from them.
Speaker 6 (12:53):
I actually listened to break Down and Sandy I like LEVI.
I tried to show him a few songs. I tried
to put him on, but he wasn't a huge fan
of the mixes I think.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
But yeah, Summer Hidden Miss.
Speaker 6 (13:03):
Yeah, but I personally love Breakdown Sanity Sweet.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
So when it comes to future plans, you know, you
got new lineup, new single, you're working on stuff behind
the scenes, future show announcements. Are there any like Goal
goals you guys want to do for the remainder of
the year. We're moving forward, whether it's individual or as
a band.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
I'd say getting us out on the road is my
biggest goal. Like having something that goes across the US
is my biggest like goal ever, that might be a
little bit of way, but we're inching closer and closer.
We do have I'll say this, we do have a
run planned. I'll just say that. So finally we're not
(13:46):
just doing one off shows. It's actually going to be like, oh,
this is a tour and that in itself for me
is really cool. So that's my That's my goal is touring.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
And I think also just you know, aside from touring
overall growth and you know, because you know, we're pushing
everything very hard on the socials and on the streaming platforms.
You know, that's the biggest way to reach people nowadays,
and I think that's going to be a big priority,
especially this year, but in the in the next following years,
you're gonna definitely see us out on the road and
(14:18):
a lot of different places. You know, just getting the
ball rolling early is doing what we can.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
I have enough time for three questions and they're my favorites.
Dream tour. Who's going to be and why?
Speaker 4 (14:30):
And including us.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Or including us?
Speaker 2 (14:35):
You're on the tour. This could be next year, tomorrow,
ten years, whatever you guys want, Okay.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
I'll say.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
I'll say I want Pincer Plus to come to the US,
and I want to say hi to my boy josh
ayng I'll say that'll be my addition. John, What's what's
your addition add to the lineup?
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Build the lineup?
Speaker 4 (14:54):
Sure?
Speaker 7 (14:55):
Yeah, honestly, God Like, there's so many bands that I
would really really want to tour with. I think one
of my favorite bands right now is Spite. I really
do see us fitting on a lineup with them at
some point. So Spite, everybody, if you're hearing this, hit
us up, because you know, we bring the energy just
as hard as y'all the band.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
They're great. I would love to tour with them.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
Knock Loose, that'd be awesome. That's a good lineup right there.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
That's a pretty good lineup, all right, I can see it.
So we're gonna put that into the universe and see
what happens. See another fun question, and I have stolen
this question from the Wheeling nailers, which are part of
the EHL. And I tell this every single time because
it's a good question. I didn't make it, but I'm
stealing it. I don't care if we went through your
phone contacts right now, who is the most famous person
(15:46):
in your phone contacts? And if you were to call
them with the answer.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
I'm pretty boring. I don't feel like I have.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
He's like, let's go.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
God might know some people like John and e J
would know people I would say, oh, no, he's not
technically in my phone contact, but like he's on the
on the on the you know, on the speed dial
is ag I guess that's probably the most famous person
that I like talk to on the last airbase. No,
(16:16):
I would that'd be cool too, though, Like but now
like his phone number, I mean I can't take his phone.
He lives in Australia. Man, those returnsane, I can't pay
that even. I think he would pick up if he
was awake because he is thirteen hours ahead of us, so.
Speaker 6 (16:33):
Uh shit, man, Like I don't know supervisor at work.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
I still I just I'm not sure.
Speaker 7 (16:43):
Not a lot of people that I have like in
my phone per se, but like people that like, if
I were to reach out, they would probably.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Respond give us a name.
Speaker 7 (16:53):
John Well, going back a very long time ago, my
mother was actually she was she knew Dwayne Johnson.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
What I was young.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
I was young for being there and like because she
actually coached his daughter's swim lessons. Shout out the rock
Hell yeah. But yeah, so they knew each other for
a while. And funny story, my mother, bless her heart,
she did actually not know who he was at the time.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
And it's one time when she was at.
Speaker 7 (17:25):
The at the club that they were doing the swim lessons,
one of the like cashier people or front desk people
was like, do you know who that is? And she
was like, who is that? And they're like, it's Dwyane
Johnson and she's like who and then they're like the
Rock and then she like acted like she was knowing
who it was, and she was like, oh, okay, So
that's like I don't know, I don't know how long
(17:48):
it's been since they've like contacted each other, but that
is probably something. It's indirect to me, but that would
probably be the most famous person I haven't.
Speaker 6 (17:56):
Pretty good rock needs to be I don't know, put
them on in the herd. We need to put them
on shout out, shout out.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
It's about DRUP, It's about well, what are you gonna
do now? Is for your next merch release? Is some
sort of rip with the rock on it?
Speaker 7 (18:13):
That would be you could just like that like that
he did, Like didn't he do that? Like wraps that
featuring that's like, that's like in our last night thing, bro.
They would they would be shout out our.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Last night exactly. Okay. So one of the last questions
I have now, and I asked this for every interview,
whther or not a band is starting out, they're at
the middle level, they're bigger, they're huge, whatever. What advice
would you guys give to bands that might just be
starting out or want to progress along in their career.
Speaker 6 (18:51):
Don't be frustrated easily.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Let's just go with the flow.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
And marketing. I mean, it sucks, but now nowadays it's
like marketing that's really what matters is are you willing
to don't money into your product to get it out
to you? Pretty much?
Speaker 4 (19:09):
I'll stay afraid. Don't be afraid to lose Jenny for sure.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah, I'd say stay positive, man, Like it is like
kind of building off of what Caleb said, like, it's
so easy to get frustrated and you're going to have
so many setbacks or things that you're like, man, this sucks, yeah,
but it's it truly is like an awesome privilege to
be able to hang out with your friends and write
music and play shows in front of people that like
(19:35):
like you.
Speaker 4 (19:36):
It's so cool.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
It's so cool, and you gotta always remember that.
Speaker 7 (19:39):
Another big thing is just patience, you know, because you
need to be patient and find your like what works
best for you as a band and for everybody in
the band in terms of everything in every aspect, like.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
Live chemistry is huge.
Speaker 7 (19:53):
Exactly, and it's just like finding the right direction and
finding what works for you and what works for your
growth and to maximize everything that you would get out of,
you know, having a band. Be patient with that kind
of stuff because sometimes it goes quick. For some people
they blow up over tonight, but a lot of most people,
ninety percent of bands are grinding every single day trying
(20:14):
to figure out what works. I think that's another important
thing in terms of growth.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
I mean, very well said guys. I've heard a lot
of different answers over the years, and that was one
of the better ones i've heard. Any final words you
guys want to say to fans have been with you
guys for a while, or maybe new fans that just
hopped on.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
Thank you so much, amazing journey so far. We're just
getting started, and yeah we're not going nowhere, so.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
Yeah, welcome aboard.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
I'm definitely gonna plug the new song and we'll have
another song relatively soon that is also very heavy.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
I think this next song is really cool, so be
ready for that.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
I love it, love to hear it. The rock is
endorsing it as well, so they heard. Appreciate you guys.
Talk with me a little bit. I'm gonna talk to
you here in a second off air. Okay, alright, guys,
that's been the heard. They're heavy, They're awesome. You gotta
check them out. They might just be starting out, but
when heels in these singles, you're gonna be like, damn
that production quality, and when you watch the music video,
(21:14):
damn that production quality. So I'm excited to see where
these guys go. Thanks for tuning into this episode of
the podcast. Hope you enjoyed it, and we'll see you
guys next time.
