Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is wb Z Boston's news radio, redefining local news
eighty two degrees in Boston at four o'clock. Good afternoon,
I'm Ben Parker. Here's what's happening. Sentencing today for former
Boston City councilor Tanya Fernandez Anderson. Prosecutors are seeking a

(00:21):
sentence of a year and one day in prison on
federal corruption charges that she pled guilty to tied to
a kickback scheme. Anderson's public defender is asking for probation
and community service. The guilty play in this case a
result of accusations Fernandez Anderson funnels thirteen thousand dollars in
a bonus payment to a relative on her staff, and
then was given seven thousand dollars that that money back

(00:44):
in cash. A demonstration today on Beacon Hill a gathering
of pro Palestinian demonstrators taking game at one specific member
of Congress. More from wbz's Jeremy Russ.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Why did these protesters come from Massachusetts fourth Congressional District.
They want their Congressman, Democrat Jake Auchincloss at time take
a firmer stance against Israel and violence in the Gaza strip,
Joe Charney was among the protesters.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
There's a particular bill in Congress right now called Block
the Bombs that we want him to sign on to.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
This all happened outside an event where auckin Class is
speaking about so called Forever chemicals. Sam Levine is with
Jewish Voice for Peace.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
The irony of this is while he's saying he's hearn
about for our health, Jake Awchenklous supports sending millions and
billions of our tax dollars to commit genocide in Gaza.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Aukin Claus has been an outspoken supporter of Israel, and
he still says Hamas needs to be eradicated, but he
recently told Fox News he'd like to see a Palestinian
led governance in post war Gaza and that the answer
isn't to go after the last remaining bit of Hamas
amid a quote ongoing humanitarian catastrophe. Jeremy Russ w b

Speaker 1 (01:48):
WBC News Radio has reached out to Congressman aucking Class
for comment. President Trump's expected to sign an executive order
to change the Defense Department to the War Department.

Speaker 5 (01:58):
It was known as the War Department until nineteen forty seven,
when after the Allied victory in World War II, there
was global hope that diplomacy would prevent all future wars.
An executive order wouldn't change the legal name of the
Defense Department. That would take an Act of Congress, but
administration officials are expected to begin using the War Department
phrasing as a second name, and Pete Hegseth will claim

(02:18):
the title Secretary of War even though he's still legally
known as the Secretary of Defense.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
A'd ABC's Stephen Portnoy Falling short of expectations the latest
jobs report showing things have stalled when it comes to
job growth.

Speaker 6 (02:30):
Analysts had been expecting employers to add around seventy five
thousand jobs in August. The actual figure just twenty two thousand,
according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The report also found the unemployment rate rose to four
point three percent, when economists had been expecting it to
hold steady at four point two. A disappointing jobs report
ups the pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates,

(02:53):
something President Trump has been pushing for. Mike Debuski, ABC news.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Man, the Job's report is doing a number on Wall Street.
We little bit of cloud in thiss around this afternoon.
We've got a little bit of sunshine peeking through as well,
and we also have a little bit of humidity that
has brought itself into our picture of weather around here,
and that's going to stay with us at least through tomorrow.
So as we head through tonight, we'll be muggy, a
little uncomfortable in the sleep department. Seventy or so for

(03:18):
the low with patchy clouds. Tomorrow, some clouds, some sun
still humid. It'll have a summary kind of feel with
temperatures getting into the mid eighties. Then a front pushes
through and fires off a couple of showers and or
thunderstorms as we had laid in the day, and some
of those storms could pack a little bit of a punch,
maybe some damaging wind guss as they fire off through
the afternoon and early evening, rather cloudy, leftover showers Tomorrow night,

(03:41):
temperatures in the mid sixties. Then Sunday, a refreshing air
gets in here. We'll have much less humidity. We may
have some showers in the morning and then some sunshine
in the afternoon, but temperatures only in the low seventies.
About seventy four for the high with sun and clouds
on Monday, and then a pretty cool stretch Tuesday starts
off with temperatures in some places not even escaping the

(04:04):
sixties right now eighty two degrees in Boston. It's all
led up to this. The polls are about to close
for the mayoral election of the Somerville bike Paths. Of
the busiest Jay Willette has more.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
A bike free bike path that's a no go for me.

Speaker 7 (04:20):
It began as a declaration that Barry the cat is
an outside feline and not only isn't lost, but is
in fact the mayor of the Somerville Community Bike Path.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
I think it's phenomenal.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
It's a fun neighborhood and this is a very good
example of it.

Speaker 7 (04:33):
That was followed by months and months of campaigning. Over
seventy signs sit on the path just short of Davis
Square and voting, which draws to a close this week.
I caught up with some last minute voters perusing the
policies of each fantastic candidate.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Consider a nightmare. You know, many cities have been doing
nightmare the night life of the bike path. That's a
whole different thing, like.

Speaker 7 (04:52):
Any campaigning, it wasn't a summer without controversy. Signs were defaced, dogs,
a tortoise, and rats enter the candidate pool.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Keep it above board, everyone you know. Democracy thrives on diversity.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
From Somerville, Jaywill at WBZ, Boston's news radio.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
After Boston gets sued by the Trump administration, the mayor
reacts the Department of Justice is seeking to invalidate policies
seen as interfering with immigration enforcement and have filed a
suit to do away with the Boston Trust Act, declaring
it invalid. Mayor Woodis statement says this is our city
and we will vigorously defend our laws at the constitutional

(05:29):
rights of cities and says we will not yield. The
mayor says this unconstitutional attack on our city is not
a surprise. Honoring a music icon, Bruce Springsteen getting a
big thumbs up from Capitol Hill, New.

Speaker 8 (05:47):
Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer spoke on the floor of the
US House of Representatives, taking a minute to recognize the
fiftieth anniversary of Springsteen's best selling album, Born to Run.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Since its released, Bruce Springsty in the Street Band have
captured not just the American spirit, but also the Jersey
values that unite US.

Speaker 8 (06:06):
It comes days after US Representative Frank Polone introduced a
House resolution honoring the fiftieth anniversary of The Boss's iconic album,
calling it a way to celebrate the enduring, cultural and
musical legacy of one of New Jersey's favorite sons.

Speaker 6 (06:19):
