Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is WBZ, Boston's news radio. We defining local.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
News mostly Sunday. Fifteen degrees, but it feels like two degrees. Hello,
thanks for being with us on this Friday. It's December
twenty sixth. I'm Sherry Small. Here's what's happening. Is going
to be another cold one out there today, very cold.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
And drive today.

Speaker 4 (00:24):
Sunshine gives way to increasing clouds with highs and the
not to mid twenty some snow later tonight.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
That's actly weather meteorologist Joe Lundberg. Not a whole lot
of snow to speak of in Greater Boston. Points south
could get a few inches mid morning on Saturday. New
York and part of western Connecticut could be seeing up
to a foot of snow, but most of it is
going to miss Greater Boston. But the cold will certainly
be with us through the weekend, all right. Ukrainian President

(00:51):
Vladimir Zelenski says he will travel to Florida to meet
with President Trump on Sunday. He says they will be
focusing on peace talks with Russia, Zelensky telling reporters they'll
be discussing security guarantees for Ukraine. He also says the
twenty point plan backed by the President is about ninety

(01:12):
percent ready. It's unclear if conflicting demands between Moscow and
Kiev have been resolved. And it's eleven oh one. President
Trump announcing on Christmas night he ordered a deadly strike
on ISIS terrorists in Nigeria. The President has accused the
group of persecuting Christians over the past few months, and

(01:34):
last night and a true social post, the President said
he directed a powerful and deadly strike against quote ISIS
terrorists scum in northwest Nigeria, claiming that they had been
killing innocent Christians. Millions of Americans starting to head home
from the holidays. ABC's Faith of Bubay offers up the
best times to travel today.

Speaker 5 (01:55):
You're headed out this weekend, Transportation Research Group in Rick
says you will have to leave before eleven am to
miss most of that traffic. The worst time to drive
will be around eleven am to eight pm. Cities like Chicago, Denver,
Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Tampa are expected to have their
worst traffic day of the season today.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
And add to that affront that is bringing possible heavy
weather stretching from the Upper Midwest into the mid Atlantic
and Northeast. Heavy snow expected to hit from Syracuse, New
York to New York City. The big winner in the
Christmas Eve powerball hailed from Arkansas, a one point eight
billion dollar winning tickets sold at a gas station just

(02:38):
outside of Little Rock.

Speaker 6 (02:39):
Now.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
There were a host of smaller winners locally. Eight fifty
thousand dollars tickets sold here in Massachusetts across a number
of communities including Attleborough, dedham Essex, Mathuen, Rockland, Peabody, Salem,
and Provincetown. The fot A WBZ aqu weather forecast will
reach mid twenties today as the highs, and then tonight

(03:03):
we'll see some snow. That's from late evening on tonight,
we'll see accumulations of about one to three inches, especially
from Boston south and west, lesser amounts this time north
of the city, and then before tapering off to flurries
early tomorrow. You want to expect some slow and slippery travel.

(03:23):
Tonight's lows near twenty degrees. Overnight tomorrow, for the rest
of the day, we're just going to be dealing with
clouds breaking for some afternoon sunshine, but highs remaining in
the mid twenties once again a little bit of a
warm up on Sunday, mix of sun and clouds but
a high of thirty five, and then warming up even

(03:43):
more On Monday. We will see some rain but highs
reaching maybe just below fifty degrees. It's mostly sunny right
now in the city and a chilly fifteen degrees at
eleven oh five. The day after Christmas can be a
day of reflection, especially when looking at our bank accounts.
Our WBC's James Rojas is checking if we state within

(04:07):
our shopping budget.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
There are those with the mindset of spend now, regret later,
but there are also those who do their best to
shop within their Christmas gift budget.

Speaker 7 (04:15):
I give a lot of gift cards pretty much show
so I know what I'm gonna give. I've already calculated,
you know what I mean, like budgeted the amount and
I'm gonna give.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
So Helen from Boston was able to spend what she
was expecting to, not something many others could say. As
MasterCard says shoppers spend nearly four percent more this year
between November one and December twenty first compared to last.

Speaker 7 (04:36):
Pretty Much, I budgeted out and this is what I'm
gonna give. Maybe one hundred dollars for this verson, maybe
fifty for that person. So pretty much. Yeah, then it
doesn't leave you stranded in all stressed.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Though, after all, there was a lot to stress over
this year, including tariffs and inflation and Dewey Square James
Rojas WBZ, Boston's News Radio, and now.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
The mad dash begins to get rid of what you
didn't want for career.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Well, we learned this year that the more things change,
the more they stay the same.

Speaker 6 (05:04):
Surprisingly, not an awful lot is new. Retailers pretty much
have kept the return policies the same as last year.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
That is consumer advocate Edgar Dwarski of Consumerworld dot org.

Speaker 6 (05:14):
Yeah, they're tweaking it a little bit here and there,
but we're not seeing a whole bunch of companies adding
new return fees.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
But Edgar says, if your product is broke.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
It doesn't matter. The sign on the wall says all
sales final.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
And you have a decision to make your choice of
one of the three yrs, repair, replacement or refund. Choose
wisely Jeff Brown WBZ, Boston's News Radio.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
And it was certainly a busy holiday season for Salvation
Army workers just north of Boston.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
In the days leading up to Christmas, folks at the
Lynn Salvation Army were pretty busy distributing toys purchased with donations,
and those toys went to a lot of children. According
to Lynn's Salvation Army Commanding Officer Emmanuel Viegos.

Speaker 8 (05:57):
The amount of children we are looking at over three
thousand and just here in the Lynn office, but across
the state we have seen an increase of twenty five
percents in Holidays requests for assistance, whether it's toys or
food across the commonwealth.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
He says, for children whose parents are having trouble paying
the bills, it's important for the Salvation or having to
step up and, in his words, make Christmas come alive
for those kids. Carl Stevens WBC Boston's news.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Radio and the Department of Public Health is reminding people
in Massachusetts about a recent potential exposure to measles. Has
happened earlier this month. A visitor from Texas walked through
Logan after arriving on a flight back on December eleventh,
and then departed from Logan the next day. It's believed
the infected traveler moved through the terminal B gates on

(06:47):
arrival and then left through terminal c measles has a
vaccination but is highly contagious, or if anyone for anyone
who is not vaccinated. Now and balloop for news updates
throughout the day. To listen to WBZ News Radio on
