This is WBZ, Boston's news radio were defining local news.
It is a chilli Saturday morning, seventeen degrees and mostly
cloudy in Boston. Feels like it's one below. Hello, and
thanks for being with us. It's eleven o'clock. Here's what's happening,
(00:21):
all right. Cautious optimism and patience, that's what it's all
about at Logan Airport right now. Our WBC's jablette is there.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Just kind of put your seatbelt on and just let
it roll, Let it roll.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
I like that is a brand new code of snow
here at terminal at Logan Airport. Prior to the big
holiday rush between December nineteenth and January fourth, TSA predicted
more than forty four million passengers nationwide.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
We didn't get snow like this at home, so this
is a bit of a first to me, I think.
But yesterday I flew over, yesterday was all right, but hey,
we'll see. I mean, it's been three pretty busy, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
So now we're in the thick of it, and there's
plenty of delays and cancelations. So definitely give that flight
dashboard a glance before you go. Keeping a cool head
like you would in the weather. Outside is the name
of the game, he says.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Especially, o't get your liquids in your bag, take your
laptops out.
Speaker 5 (01:08):
Should work for TSA.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
T Usay predicts that tomorrow will be the busiest travel
day for airports across the country. At Terminal A J.
Will att WBZ Boston's news radio.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
And checking the flightboard over at Logan. According to flight
to Where, so far today there have been two hundred
and thirty two flights delayed, forty four flights canceled. A
fire in Abington leaves five people without their homes. It
happened yesterday. Firefighters called to twenty six Winthrops Street at
about two point thirty in the afternoon. The multi family
(01:39):
building declared uninhabitable. Now the Red Cross is assisting. No
injuries to the residents were reported, but two dogs and
a cat did die in that fire. Cause remains under investigation.
With Christmas now in the rear view mirror, tis the
season for post holiday shopping.
Speaker 6 (01:57):
Especially for cash strapped kids in teens. Those gift cards
stuffed in their stockings just couldn't wait to be spent.
Speaker 7 (02:05):
I got I had like an up the gift card.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
I was like fifty dollars and I got like three things.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
I got a couple Xbox gift cards that I got
on Amazon World.
Speaker 6 (02:14):
And for bargain hunters willing to brave the crowds and cold,
it makes sense.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
We left the house at thirteen degrees this morning. We
were so happy to find some good sales the day
after Christmas. That's why we came out today. And yeah,
we're enjoying the break and spending our money.
Speaker 6 (02:27):
According to a new consumer report, at least forty percent
of people planned to return at least one gift they received.
These weeks after Christmas are what's now known as return Youuary,
the busiest time of year for retail returns, transactions that
add up to the billions.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
And that CBS News Boston's Julie McDonald reporting, there's some
retailers heads up. We're charging fees to return items by mail,
so you might be able to save a little money
by bringing items back in person. The ACU weather forecast
a very chilly one today, highs only reaching about twenty
six degrees Tonight, mainly clear, very cold, with a low
(03:05):
of seventeen in the city. In some of those inland suburbs,
closer to ten degrees overnight. Tomorrow, a bit of a
warm up with a high of thirty five, a mix
of sun and clouds, and Monday really warming up. We
will see some periods of rain, but we'll see also
see highs flirting with about fifty degrees. Then a turnaround
on Tuesday. It's going to be cold once again, a
(03:26):
windy as well, cloudy sky's a high of just twenty eight.
Real field temps will stay mainly in the teens. In Boston.
Right now, it's seventeen degrees, mostly cloudy again. We've got
a factor in the real field tamp. It feels like
it's one below at eleven oh five. Back to news
the college Clash of Titans taking place at the Old
(03:47):
Ballpark Today.
Speaker 7 (03:48):
The Yukon Huskies take on the Cadets of West Point
at Fedway Park, as the baseball home of the Red
Sox has transformed into a football gridiron for the Wasabi
Fedway bull the fourth of Day should have the postseason
college matchup. It'll be Army's first ever appearance at Fenway Park.
Head coach Jeff Munkin reflecting on a unique aspect of
(04:08):
the game with both teams sharing the same sideline.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
I've been a part of one game in my career
where we did that.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
There's some challenges obviously, the coach to player communication that
we have now, where our coaches can speak to the
quarterback or speak to one of the guys on defense.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Hopefully we'll make it easier.
Speaker 7 (04:27):
I think we're probably going to find out when we
get in the game on Saturday, just maybe what challenges
are presented there, and we'll try to work through them.
Army six and six on the season with momentum after
winning five of their last seven. Mike Michelin WBZ Boston's
news Radio, Well.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
It is not the one point eight billion dollar jackpod,
but someone in Methuen still one big in the latest
Powerball drawing.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
You have a guest, and I have any people stop
being It's a very fortunate store.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
At ted State Line Mobile Store, there's far more real
estate for tables and scratchers than there are for honey
buns and gatorade. That's the focus of the business nowadays.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
And a good clientele that comes in all the time.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Over the course of about a month and twenty twenty two,
this store sold that one, not two, but three million
dollar winning tickets. So it's no surprise to staff that
people come here to try their luck more than anywhere
else in the States. Like double you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
Like all right, you've got Christmas, lots of scratchees, and
then you've got Powerball on top of that.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Lines were out the door for the Powerball folks who
wanted to be part of that Christmas Eve drawing storybook magic.
Unlucky ducks scored fifty k. They just don't know who yet.
In Withthillin Jay will let them be busy. Boston's news Radio.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
All right, before you toss out that Christmas tree, consider
giving it to goats or sheep to snack on. Here's
WBZ Zamma Friedman to tell us how.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
I'm basically in farm heaven here in Sherborn, surrounded by goats, sheep, cows, horses, birds,
and a lama. And I know Doctor Doolittle, but I'd
say the animals are having the time of their life
jumping on Christmas trees.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
And they nibble on the bark, they nibble on the needles.
They get a little minty fresh prep.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
That's got Lamka, the executive director and co founder of
Unity Firm, sanctuary. They're accepting your Christmas trees because while
we find them cheerful and fun to decorate, goats and
sheep find them tasty.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
They can go through those pretty quickly. We save the skeletons,
as I call them. They're pretty bare looking at the end,
and we grind them up and use that as chips
for our four and a half miles of walking trails.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
As long as your tree doesn't have any sprays on it,
it's a healthy treat for them, full of vitamins and
a naturally wormer.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
We have a very clearly marked area in our meadow.
You can come anytime. You don't have to let us know,
and you can drop your tree there. Please dedecorate it,
don't leave the ornaments on. They're not very new churches.
You might want them.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
If you're born. I'm a freedman a WBZ Boston's news radio.
