Below. This guy here, goodguy, good friend. We love covering
(02:17):
him and his team and he isa hockey coach for the Trojans of Liman
Hall. I don't think he felttoo well after Saturday we were there,
but I don't know who saw thatblitzkrie come. I don't mean to say
it like that, but that's whatit was. And his name is A
Dave sag Now. Oh, coach, Hey, coach, thanks for having
(02:38):
me. Are you kidding me?You're welcome anytime. You know. You
know, my guys and I welove talking to you and having you on
the air. But that was Iwant to say anything. But when we
were tweeting this game out and therewas somebody there tweeting it out, someone
tweeted out, what is happening? And hey, some days are like that.
(03:01):
You know, it's but it's justone game. But Massa came into
the Northford Ice pavilion and boy, they beat Liman All pretty good eight to
two on Saturday, led by theCondom Brothers, who, by the way,
we're at it again this afternoon andthey're whin. They also won this
case. You didn't know. Theybeat Brookfield Bethel dan Berry immaculate four to
three. Anyway, let's talk LimanHall because regardless of Saturday overall record,
(03:25):
now what six and three day.Yes, we are now six and three,
okay, and you have a hugegame coming up on Wednesday afternoon.
You're playing Guildford. You're playing theGrizzlies on Wednesday. Correct, No,
we are playing North Bramford. NorthBramford. I knew it was a huge
game one way or the now.My see, my producer is from North
(03:46):
Bramford, so you see his eyeslit up when you hear tea Birds are
playing the Trojans and what should bea great game. I hate to say
it, it's going to be adandy another doozy in Division two and also
an s c C game s cC s w C, which means a
lot for the upcoming playoffs. Anyway, you played nine games so far,
(04:09):
okay, some different players, butyou got some of some returneys. Just
sort of assess your first nine gamesso far. Well, now, I'm
I'm very pleased with coward played.Take Saturday side. I think that was
just one of those one of thosedays where nothing went our way. We
(04:31):
came out very flat, and Itake responsibility for that. I am the
coach. I need to get themprepared for every game. If it's a
D one team we're playing D twoD three, So that that falls on
my shoulders. We'll learn from that. We're going to try throwing it away
and hopefully never never have to witnessthat again. But overall, I mean
(04:54):
I'm very, very very pleased.Last year we only had three wins.
Right, we were very young. So all those freshmen last year they were
getting a lot of playing time, are now a year older, a year
stronger. And then we also addedanother four or five freshmen that are seeing
regular times. So we're still veryyoung, and I'm trying to balance the
(05:16):
be positive. They're young, let'slet's keep rolling. But I mean when
you're a five and one or sixand three, you also have to motivate
them, like, hey, youhave a target on your back and teams
aren't going to take you lately, and every year is different, and we
just we need to keep pushing ourselves. Yeah, and Division two you and
I were talking Saturday. Division twois loaded, Dave loaded, loaded absolutely,
(05:43):
and I think our next six gamesare insane. I keep going at
the Gauntlet. We're playing North Bramford, Watertown Hams and West Have and Amity
East Haven co Op. So Imean it's a fun next three weeks I'm
looking forward to with the players arelooking forward to it because it's really going
to test where we are and yeah, what we can learn from Yeah you're
(06:08):
talking about you mentioned the statement theywon again today they did. They beat
West Hill Stafford, who came intothat game undefeated, and they beat them
eight to two. It was justeight to one. It was just it
was a shell acking. I mean, they're they're rolling. But again,
the teams you mentioned them all inDivision two Again, if you get your
eight wins in regular season play, you're guaranteed a spot, but you can
(06:31):
also get a spot if you're oneof the top sixteen teams record wise,
because the top sixteen teams make itinto the Division two tournament. But you
know, try to rely on thatand that doesn't always work out too well
when a lot of teams are vyingfor one or two positions. Get the
eight and then you're assured of gettingin. Would you agree? Absolutely?
(06:51):
And after our tryouts, we meetwith each player individually and we asked him,
hey, what team goals should wehave with your individual goals and every
turning player that eight wins. Yeah, but that's all they want because last
year they missed out on it andthey saw everyone else having spawn and for
(07:13):
the state title, and that's whatthey want because I always say, just
get in the dance. Anything canhappen. You're absolutely now, you're right,
and you know, and being acoach myself in basketball, that number
eight looms large over your head, and the kids to me play differently.
(07:34):
Sometimes I would hope not, butsometimes you see a little bit different.
They want to get to that eight. And somehow when that eight is a
chieved, it's like a big ah, we got a big weight lifted off
our back. And now they alwaysseem to play better and more, you
know, with ease, and youknow what I mean. It's good because
(07:55):
they know even if they have aslip up along the way, they're still
in the tournament. To me,that makes a big difference. It really
does. Man. I couldn't agreewith you any more than that they're finally
loose. After that, we callit state Day whenever we do well.
Yeah, and then still more,Dave, come on, buddy, no,
(08:15):
I agree. And yeah, Imean, if we played like we
did before Saturday, and that's nottaking anything away from Massa, they were
very skilled. They came out readyto play and I tip my hat to
them sometimes take away that yep, take away that game. I mean,
we've been very competitive in the gamesthat we lost, and even the games
(08:37):
that we want to have been competitive. So we're still learning along the way.
Definitely worked that we need to do. But like I said, we
we are young, so I gotto keep that in perspective. But I
mean we also need to play towhat our record is. Yeah, you're
right, Yes, that's true.Well, I'll tell you what, So
how many seniors on the team,Dave, We only have three this year?
All right, okay, three?Wow. We're trying to build,
(09:00):
don't I mean, I think sevencame in last year, eight came in
this year. So yeah, it'sfifteen over the last two years. That's
trying to keep the program building andpeople talking about Lineman Hall and yeah,
that's really the main goal. Butwe still always always want to compete,
and you always do, know,I know you and your staff. Has
(09:22):
there ever been talk not that lineat all, or I'll say the other
school she and want here, hasever been talk about co op? I
don't know. I don't know ifLineman own sin even if you had to
co op with co op with them. I'm not sure. I'm not too
sure these twose goals what I'm notI have no idea, but it seems
(09:43):
like they don't want to. Iwouldn't say we don't. I just the
numbers just don't match up. We'reat twenty two twenty three finally, and
yeah, it with all the CIACrules and regulations, which I mean you
need. Yeah, you need abig, big reading glasses to get through
(10:03):
all that. Yeah, I'm gladfor them. They found a home and
he staven. They're they're doing verywell. I think it worked out for
for everybody. But I know there'salways talk about the schools merging. I
think that's on the back burner now. But yeah, I mean we'll cross
that bridge if you ever need to. But right now we're just Lineman Hall
(10:26):
and I'm gonna keep concentrating on mytwenty two twenty three players. Yeah,
why not? I mean it isgood now, do you foresee? Like?
And I know you have to alwayslook ahead, and this does it
look because you lose only three, which means you still have nineteen? But
are there are there more coming inagain? Next year? Yeah? We
(10:48):
should. We should be pretty steadyover the next three four years. Okay,
I don't have definitive numbers, buteverything looks looks promising on our end.
Okay, you're very the best answer. You're very diplomatic, Dave.
I like it. Same staff. You've always said, I love your staff.
(11:09):
Tell us your coaches and your assistants. May and I've Matt Williams.
He's been with me. Uh yeah, since I started five years ago.
He takes care of the d he'severyone loose. Well, that's why you
gave up all those goals. Well, okay, all right, trust me
and him had a nice long time. Yeah, he's great. He's Alignment
(11:30):
Hall alumni, and then my otherassistants Georgia and Napoli. He was he
was a player for me what fouryears ago, my first year at Linman
Hall, and he's just he's great. He gets along with the kids because
he could relate to them because he'snot that much older and he played for
me, So it's a great perspectivewhen I get mad or I'm letting something
(11:56):
go under the radar, like,he understands why I'm doing and he can
relay that message without people pencing upor anything like that. He has a
lot of energy, I know thathe's a good especially. Yeah, yeah,
he really is. And of coursefor people say all that name sounds
familiar, his dad is the coachof the Branford Hornets as a matter of
(12:18):
fact, Right, so yeah, great is another great year? Absolutely right?
Uh so everything seems to be goingin the right way here for Lineman
Hall. And what a difference fromlast year's three win total and now already
at six. A couple of morewill cement your spot in the state tournament
(12:39):
Division two. And let's face it, how many do they do? Top
eight will make it in the SECSWCDivision two conference tournament. I believe it's
still just the top four did atthe coaches eating and possibly going to six
in the future. But this yearnow and it's still for you, okay,
(13:01):
all right? I love to seeMortgage in just to I mean,
you know what it costs you onemore day just to play, you know,
play in or quarter you know,in any quarterfinal games, which doesn't
seem too bad to me anyway. You're a great guy, love Avenue.
As I always tell you, Myguys love covering limonhal Brian. It's every
time I tell them Limanhall, hesaid, I just hope they recognize me.
(13:24):
It's an inside joke, folks,But I mean, we have a
lot of fun with them, andand we always like covering Limon Hall.
It's just one of those things youget to follow certain teams, and trust
me, I follow all the gamesanyway, so I know exactly what everybody's
doing. Anyway, Dave, you'rea great guy. Say hello to all
the Limanhall kids and your coaching staff, and of course you know we'll see
(13:46):
you along the road again. Cannotgo without seeing Liman Hall. No,
I definitely appreciate it, and Iknow the players myself. Everyone appreciates the
coverage and letting these players' names beheard on the radio with something we'll never
forget. So we appreciate all thecoverage and everything you do for high school
hockey. So thank you. Yougot it, Dave. Thanks for the
(14:07):
kind words. We'll talk soon.Have a good night too. Thank you.
We will talk to him right now. He is the head man,
the head hot show, probably sittingin his plush office at the Bennett Rink
and West Haven in the back.Uh, I said, plush office.
It's you know, it's it's all. It's all nice. I know,
(14:30):
that uh and his name is LarryVieira. He's the head hockey coach at
notre name of west Haven. Let'ssee tonight, Matten pretty good. Dave
Sagnell was on earlier. He losthis last game on Saturday that I did,
and Larry this afternoon. I knowhe's not happy, but he plays
a tough schedule. So what areyou going to do? Bishop Henderton today?
Larry three to one. Hello,George, how are you? I'm
(14:52):
doing great? How are you doingall right? Yeah? First of all,
I want to apologize for last week. That's okay, it's water,
It's it's okay. We talked aboutit. It's not my norm, but
I don't know what it is.Maybe it's a little older age creeping in.
I totally forgot about. Sorry.I was wondering tonight if you might
have a problem, get a holdof you. No. Again, it's
(15:13):
an honor to be on your show. And again I apologize. That's all
right, but I thought maybe you'dbe headed for the Q Bridge. I
don't know these I've never had youon on the day of a loss.
That is the first time, youknow, Yeah, I mean I Bishop
Benderkin's ten in one the three timedefending champions in Rhode Island. You know,
we're trying to play a tough schedule. Not trying, but we are
(15:33):
playing a tough schedule. We're justtrying to get ready for the Connecticut competition
and hopefully make a run this year. And the only way we believe we
could do that is playing against thetop teams in Rhode Island, New Jersey
and mass And quite frankly, Ithought we played well. I was not
upset. I believe that they're alittle bit better, They're a little deeper,
(15:56):
they're a little more skilled, andthere's some areas we got to adjust
and we gotta we got to mixsome adjustments with whether it's systematic or personnel.
But overall I felt that they madeus, uh they forced us into
errors. And I thought they werea little quicker. They were, they
had a little more jumped to theirskates, and they're just very good.
Sometimes you got to tip your hatto the opponent. That's what Dave Sagnell
(16:17):
has said about Saturday, when wewere there doing the massive game. This
just came in and that was it. There was nothing you could do,
you know what I mean. Butuh, you said you said that you
think they're little. I don't knowhow they could be deeper than you.
Well, I say they're deeper, their their their skill. Wet lettle was
a little bit better. So that'swhat I mean, my deeper number.
Otherwise, okay, lines, yeah, you still have four lines, right,
(16:41):
I played four tonight, but againthey were a little bit better than
us. And I'll be honest withyou. That's one of my big things
as an educator. You know, kids need to study, they need to
get a's and b because the amountof hockey players and athletes that are out
there, it's mind boggling. Imean, we had four th and six
really good high players on the iceand it just seems amazing the talent level
(17:03):
for any youth sport. And that'swhy I'm a big proponent of enjoy high
school, enjoy the experience. Butstudy. Please, that's that's the whole
key. You're really you know you'reright, But let me ask you leave
you to another question just came tome here. When the kids come up
from sports or midgets to whatever itis, and you know the coaches down
(17:26):
there pretty well most of them, and they get they get into a uh
competitive level. You know when theyget older. Do the kids because I've
seen in basketball, I know,I've seen it in football. Do these
kids know the game? Because infootball I see things sometimes saying you know,
(17:47):
you know doesn't know the game?Yeah, all the facets of the
game. Do the kids know thegame when they get up to you to
play? I I don't believe so. And it's pretty simple. There's less
referees, there's less true quality coaches, and there's less high quality teachers.
The pay is not good. Thelove of the game is tremendous for all
(18:11):
of us, but there's less peoplethat want to accept the liability, and
there's less people that want to dealwith the off the ice situations, which
are very challenging. So there's lessgood coaches on the youth level that we're
getting. Again, the coaches onthe youth level are are average or above
(18:33):
average or very good, but there'sless of them, and that's the problem.
So we're getting kids but are basicallyI got to teach skills too.
I got to teach the basics still, because you're right, they don't they're
not learning it on the lower level. Okay, but there has to be
some years where you're teaching probably morethan others. In other words, there
(18:53):
are some years you've had some outstandingteams, you probably could have I mean
I could have gone out there justroll the pucks out and they knew exact
they could run. I mean, the kids know the drills. I remember
in basketball when Jeff and I coach, they knew what to do and set
everything up. And in other years, you find yourself, my goodness,
I got to go over this.Yeah. I mean, we're fortunate,
(19:15):
you know, because of the talentlevel at Notre Dame. We're fortunate.
But when I was at you know, the public schools, I found that
their skill sets were a little bitlower. But on this level that we're
playing, these kids have been reallywell coached. They've played on tremendous travel
teams. Their skills are pretty good. But we do skill work in skill
(19:36):
development every day our practices. SoI mean we must spend thirty forty minutes
on skill and then another ten tofifteen minutes on systems, but it's skill
based. I want the kids, each kid to touch the puck two hundred
times of practice, that's my goal. Two hundred times of practice. You
might want the kids to touch thefuck correct, because in a game,
(19:57):
and this is this one gets tobe a little level of aggravation. A
lot of folks want to go anddo tournaments, right, they want their
kids to play four or five games. Well, the average amount of time
that kids touch the puck h isfour seconds a game. So in a
game, a kid will touch thepuck four to five seconds in the entire
game. So how are you goingto get better? That's playing in tournament.
(20:22):
So I want the kids to touchthe puck two hundred times minimal per
practice, and that's the only wayyou get better to the I'm not gonna
argue with the logic. I'm justsaying I didn't realize it was. The
act was that short, if youknow what I mean? Yeah, that's
that's it. Four to five secondsper game. So that's doing the math
five games, that's twenty seconds youtouch the puck. It cost you a
(20:44):
thousand bucks for gas, hotels andall everything else. It makes no sense,
I do. I'm just gonna youput it like that. That's easy.
That's an easy decision. You runthe four lines. I'll tell you
one thing, and that Brian sawthis Saturday too. This massive team came
out, let me tell you somethingthere anything but like a Division three team,
(21:06):
there's no question about that. Buthe had those lines changing and Brian
kept noting, look on off,on off, forty five seconds, blah
blah blah. He didn't have anyof these kids out there for very long,
and they came out and they lookedfresh every time they come out.
What is how do you work itwell with your line? That's the sign
(21:26):
of an excellent coach. We gothirty forty second shifts and if you look
it up, yeah, that's youmax out. So hockey wise, your
production level after thirty five to fortysecond starts to go downward. Okay,
And then the longer you're out there, the longer it takes to recover.
So it's a dual problem. Soif I'm out there for a minute and
(21:48):
a half, I was going tosay, I'm tak me a lot longer
to recover. So if you runthree lines thirty forty seconds a shift,
your recovery times quicker. And that'sreally a good coaching part in his behalf.
But we we have a top watch. We have a guy that's on
our bench that has a stop watchand we monitor each shift and let the
kids know if they're you know, above that forty second mark. That's what
(22:11):
we strive for, is forty secondshifts on and off. Yeah, that's
that's how you get maximum production onthe kids. You're right, Do you
ever though at times say stay outthere? You know, like I say,
no, no, okay, justasking you have to because the situation,
you know, calls for it.Stuck you know, stuck in your
(22:32):
zone, no problem. But wedon't allow that because kids are used to
doing that on the you hockey level, you know, playing minute minute half
shifts, and you can't do itagainst high school level kids. So I'm
a big believer in forty second shifts, and I got to make sure these
kids are reinforced to have it becausethey'll stay out longer than it will come
(22:53):
off. If they don't, thenthen sit down and be an assistant coach
for a period, you know,I know, I understand. What about
Division one this year in state ofConnecticut, tell me about that, you
know again, you know, there'sa lot of really good teams that the
Fairfield County teams seemed really strong thisyear. The Richfield, Darien and nu
(23:15):
Canaan the other area got sims veryNorthwest Fairfield Prep. I know they're starting
off slow. I don't care whattheir record is. They're super dangerous.
And then even the other teams thatare are struggling, you know, the
Greenwiches and Field. Any given nightthey could clip Field. They can knock
you off. So you know there'seleven teams. The field is small in
(23:41):
Division one this year, right,But I'm afraid of every one of them.
Quite honestly, I respect every opponentwe play or don't play, but
I respect every team. Okay, well, now that's I guess you have
to plan it that way, becauseyou're right. If you don't bring your
a game every game, you findyourself packing up your stuff when the state
tournament comes. I understand, butyou play a very very difficult out of
(24:03):
state schedule, so by the timeyou play the teams here at Connecticut,
I'd be probably safe in saying you'renot playing. And I'm taking nothing away
from the other good teams in Connecticut, but I don't think you're playing anybody
better. You know, when youget back to Connecticut to play the end
state teams, I'm sure those teamsare are very very good. They're they're
(24:29):
they're they're deeper than us. Themost teams in Connecticut, in Massachusetts and
Rhode Island and New Jersey teams arehistorically a little bit better, you know.
I mean last year we only lostthe one out of state team.
This year we've lost the three. But I feel that I can attract good
student athletes by this playing the best, and I also feel that putting us
(24:49):
in adverse situations like today, nowwe have to make adjustments with personnel,
and they exposed some weak areas thatto me is invaluable. And I feel
once we get to the playoffs, our team is going to be bad already,
and I believe it's going to helpus move further along in the playoffs.
Again, one never knows, butthat's my plan. I got coach
(25:14):
LV. It's Henry. How areyou good? Henry? How are you
good? Good? Thanks for comingon with us. Got a question for
you because you actually do you actuallydo carry You actually have a youth hockey
team that you coach as well.Correct, I coached Peewe's and viantams and
I just got off the ice tonightobviously for this call. But I do
coach younger, younger players that Ido a summer camp and I do lessons
(25:37):
from Easter on, so I'm involvedwith you know, different age groups.
Yes. Now my question to youis this, do you feel like,
especially when you get your boys atthe high school level, do you find
that you might have to break certaincertain habits that other coaches that may have
put into kids that don't go alongin that don't fit your system. Do
(25:59):
you find that you might have tobreak them down a little bit to kind
of fit on the system. That'sa lot of it. Because I was
a goalie, so oh yes,my friendship point out Larry was a goalie
university have by the way. Yes, So my thinking is is if you
don't allow any goals, I knowit sounds very basic, you can't lose
the game. So I'm a bigbeliever in in zone coverage, kind of
(26:22):
like what coach Violano does. Histeams were always historically tremendous in zone.
I want our guys to play inzone, play below the dots. And
there's a lot of kids that weget that. The coaches just have a
different style. So they want afreewheel, they want to they want to
go and end and it takes awhile. Like I have a player that
he's his second year with me,he's we're just starting to break him now
(26:45):
because he always wants to take offbecause well, I scored a lot of
goals in Utahey, I don't care. I don't care if you don't score
any goals. I just want youto protect my goalie. So you know,
systematically, you know, I mighthave a boring style of coaching.
I don't like to open things upa lot. But again, it just
takes a while for kids to buyinto what you were selling. Okay,
(27:07):
you hold any records university in evenline, Yeah, no records at the
University of is. I worked hardand I had every minute I played.
It was because of hard work.I h my first year, i'dn't dressed.
My second year, I was thebackup. I played like three games.
My third year I split, andin my fourth year the same thing
(27:30):
I was. I was never theguy. You know, I was an
honor to play Division two sports.I mean we used to play at the
myth. We used to play Colgatein Princely. Oh yeah, and uh
all the you know, the guysthat played in college Wie Frankly were better
than me. So I had towork harder to keep up. I mean,
I was, I was a roleplayer, and that's me as a
(27:51):
coach. I always want my roleplayers to feel part of something because I
was. I was that guy thatwas a role player in college. I
did, so that's a big Butyou also, people should know you coached
at Branford High School for how manyyears? Twenty six? Twenty six?
At Branford? Do you want toDarien for two? I don't count that,
(28:12):
but all right, okay, youknow, you know I didn't want
you there, but that's okay. But Manhattanville College for a year, for
a year and then was six years. That's the one. I didn't remember
how many years it was. Sixthat's a good Yeah. Yeah, we
were proud there. You know,we started off in Division three three,
(28:33):
you got them to Division one,Division one and then now Notre Dame was
six years. But this is myforty first year of coaching. Wow,
which is kind of scary. No, I wasn't sure how many years was
the total. Now I know fromnow it's forty one. I have a
(28:55):
kid, Johnny Coombs on my team, and I coached his father at branfordycle
it could get even more scary ifI if I coach his grandson, but
we're not to that point. Butit's it's funny how time goes and how
the cycle cycle goes of life.I can't believe I've been doing this for
(29:17):
forty one years. Great, Ican. But who do you have coming
up on the schedule next? Well, it's probably gonna be number one.
At number two, we'll be atDarien on a Saturday night. And then
uh, and then we got anumber one. Okay, Saturday night,
This Saturday night at Darien, that'snot the home Boy, and then notre
(29:42):
name of fair Fields. They're improving. We have them on Wednesday, so
we don't get any breaks, whichis fine. Well, no, you
obviously you don't want any breaks.Uh. Well, I'll tell you what
I've seen. Your coach. Igot him a coaching job. He could
do any my programs any day ofthe week. Because if I just say,
(30:03):
okay, you got it, it'syour program, I'll you and like
that, let me do what Igotta do, and he'll get that program
like he did with Immaculate. Fromdivision three. He just skip by Division
two, which I thought he shouldhave stopped there. But it wasn't.
Michael. He went to Division oneand got them to the semi finals narying.
So I mean it was you justyou're an outstanding coach. I don't
know any way to put it.You work harder than anybody I know in
(30:29):
terms of hockey. I mean, you fall asleep. I know what your
desk, get home, you gotpaid. You know that's what I'm hearing.
You fall asleep right right? Youjust you're constantly going and that's great.
Uh. I wish you. Iwish you're nothing but success. Uh
down the stretch. You're good. You're a good guy. And well,
(30:52):
he's more than a friend. Larryand I are more that. We've been
together for quite a few years now. He's like part of my extended family
and I was so happy he wasthere at my party yesterday. Thank your
happy birthday and congratulations on your award. Thank you. Well, listen,
I'll let you go and have yourselfa great night and good luck this week.
