(02:22):
I'm just I'm just going. He'sgoing global right away. His name is
Walter case Junior. One of thebest of all time. He has right
now over eleven thousand wins, infact, eleven thousand and two eighty.
They update this all the time.Eleven thousand, two ninety four. I
think it is and I am delighted, thrilled to have you on the show.
(02:43):
Walter case Junior, Good morning, sir George, Yeah, hey,
don't pal Hey, coach, heylisten, good morning to you. Thank
you for getting up with me thismorning. And I appreciate that. One
of the greatest of all time. And you know what, my son,
who follows harness racing, probably evencloser than I do, he said you
(03:07):
could drive for him any time.By the way, you could drive for
him anytime you want. Appreciate thatalmost almost eleven thousand, three hundred wins.
Here you're on your way. Oneof the things that my race guy
who I talked every week, I'lltalk to him a little while. Wanted
(03:28):
me to ask you, was andyou drive at bangor you drive at all
the fares, and you drive atCumberland a lot. Now, is there
one track that you like more thananother? To do drivers get that way?
Is there one track they like togo to they like driving there?
Do you have any favorite? Well, you know, I spent a lot
(03:52):
of years at Yonkers, and ifyou're in a track for several years,
you learn the tendency of how thetrack plays right, you know, whether
it's closers or speed horses, andand you kind of get used to that.
So you know, h Yonkers wasprobably my favorite good for Yeah,
(04:13):
and uh, Pocono Downs was reallya nice track to drive on, a
great surface, one of the bestsurfaces in the country. Right. It's
very very kind to a horse there, legs. It's just a great footing,
you know, for their feet andeverything. So Pocono Downs, I
didn't know that idea. I knowthat, Yeah, I want a driving
(04:38):
title there in two thousand and Ireally enjoyed it there. And you know,
I spent a little time at themeadow Lands and I've been around.
Uh, you've been You've been sucha great driver you think about these crazy
(04:59):
things to ask driver sometimes one meaning, did you ever drive a race and
say at the end of the race, because you know, it's like any
anything else you critique yourself. Didyou ever say to yourself, I don't
know, maybe I could have drivena better race. Oh, I've got
it thousands of times, you know, standing me, I'm my harshest critic.
(05:21):
You really are you really? Youknow if I drive a horse bad,
I dwell on it too much. And you can't know that, Walter,
you can't do that. You haveto get rid of the next race.
You got to you gotta turn thepage and go into the next race.
That you can't carry it with you. I've gotten better as I've gotten
older, you know. Listen. We should also mention that Walter Case's sister,
(05:46):
Kelly Case, is a trainer.Yeah, you used to drive a
lot of horses, used to driveand then train. Now do you you
drive horses that she that she trains? Uh? Her Husban and Dave Ingraham,
Yes, another one of the greats. Yep. Yeah, I've got
close to eight thousand wins. Andhe's you know, he's been doing it
(06:09):
as long as I have. Andbut he does they're driving now solely,
you know, I mean, shemeans she doesn't use you at all.
Uh, in a in a pinch, you know, Uh, Dave,
my brother in law was in anaccident unfortunately one time, and uh they
handed the reins over to me.Oh yeah, So did your sister ever
(06:31):
say to you, Walter? Whatwhat what were you doing out there?
You know what I mean? Didshe ever promost you? Walter? We
drove together one night at Yonkers nYeah, this is good And I parked
her. I parked her out,so and uh she let me know about
it. And for people don't knowthat, tell him, tell them what
(06:56):
you mean when you say park parkedher out. She couldn't get by,
could you? You couldn't get by, and she had to take the long
route. Let's put he was onthe outside the whole mile own. It's
not a place you want to be. That's a lot. You're going further
around the track, you know, more than a mile? Did you?
Did you let you have it afterthe race? Yes? She did?
(07:16):
Yeah, did you well? Iunderstand I would do the same thing probably
anyway. You know, she's verycompetitive like myself. And would you say
about that? You're very competitive guyWalter. Yeah, yes, yeah,
and you got to you gotta havethat instinct. If you don't, you
(07:39):
know, it's just you got tobe aggressive and you got to have that
killer instinct that Michael Jordan's assassin. You know. I like that comparison.
Very good. You've got to bean assassin out there. It's not especially
a half mile track racing you canget swallowed up. I mean, we
got a great colony of drivers. He's going to bring that up. The
(08:01):
array of star drivers up in Mainenow it is, it's unmatched. It's
unmatched. I mean, we've gota great young drivers. And you know,
you know Matti Thurn has moved onto Sharitogin. He's a nick grapham.
I mean, there's there's a laundrylist of four or five great young
(08:22):
drivers, and sprinkle that in withveterans like myself, Bruce Ranger, David
Graham, Drew Campbell, Eath Campbell, right. I mean, it's a
it's a tough driving colony. Imean, and I've got Bruce Ranger on
the show, as you know, and like he said, when I go
to work, as we when Igo to work at the tracks, I'm
(08:43):
out to win. That's what Iwant to do, you know what I
mean, I'm a nice guy.I want to win period. You know.
I've known Bruce for forty five years. Yeah, he is one of
the nicest guy off the track. But he's the meanest guy I've ever been
on. The meanest guy, toughest, yeah, tough, Okay, off
(09:03):
the track, he's just he's fine. He's a sweetheart, sweetheart. Yeah,
what do you think about? Whatdo you think about one of my
guys who I got to know wellup there, Drew Campbell. Drew great,
great, great guy, great driver, you know, very aggressive,
you know, put some of theput some of the good spot horses.
(09:24):
When I say a good spot halfmile track, you're usually going to be
sitting up close, you know. And Bruce, I mean Drew fire went
off the car. We all knowthat with the best of him. He
does. I've seen his stuff.Fact, I asked him when I was
up there, you know, afew weeks, I said, have you
changed your style at all? Youknow? Uh? And he said no,
(09:46):
not really. He goes because alot of times Drew wants to get
the horse out and if he canget out and we'll see you later.
Come and catch me if you can. I've seen that many times, right,
yeah, and he still get thebest lean. You know. I
used to be able to lean likethat. My old bones don't let me.
Don't allow me to lean back likethat's the bike. Yeah he does.
(10:07):
You're right, he does. You'reright. That's a point. That's
a great point. I just didn'tknow. But have you have you seen
what of the biggest change have youseen any the biggest changes between harness driving.
Let's say you know when you firststarted till now, oh yeah,
well, the safety is the biggestthing they took I started out, they
(10:28):
had a hub rail, you know, and they took that out, and
uh, they're just pylons now.So you know, you have a horse
that makes a bad break or there'ssome equipment problems, you can get him
inside off the track, inside thepylons. Where before we had a hub
rail, Jeez, you'd had yougo over over it and you know it
(10:50):
was dangerous. I had to understand, you know, the equipment so much
better the race bikes. Are thebikes better now? Yeah? Well yeah,
okay, speed you know, anduh, but those are the biggest
changes. And you know, thedriver drivers you know back in the day.
(11:11):
Uh see drivers now they work out, I mean that's all he is.
Drive most like they take a guylike Aaron Merriman. He races two
tracks a day every day. Henever takes a vacation. What's wrong with
back in the day, one persondid it all. They drove, they
trained, I mean they just dideverything with a horse. Now they have
(11:35):
you know, drivers or specialty. You know, do you own any horses
right now? Yourself? No,I don't know. I'm just curious.
But me and my girlfriend, weuh we work for a guy over here
over in Romaine, Jimmy Dunn thatwould come over. We we do stalls
(11:56):
and like right now, just gettingready to go out with a horse.
We get seven jog and then wehave to head off to bangor A by
ten o'clock because it's about an hourand a half to drive from here.
It is you're right from where youare. Yeah, So as racing in
bangor today, which is post postOkay, how many how many drives you
(12:16):
got today? Actually really off dayfor me, only three drives and it
kind of makes it a long day. If you got one in every race,
the day goes by faster, right, rev state busier. But you
know, just one of them days. I got one in the first,
ninth and tenth cheers. So betweenthe first and the ninth it's probably two
(12:39):
and a half hours. I gotcheese. I'd have plenty of time to
talk to you. Oh yeah,I could come in. We could talk
all afternoon. That's a good point, is there. I know it's kind
of crazy if you've had so manywins and things. Is there any one
horse that you said, you know, over the years that you did so
well with that that you you couldsay it's one of the best you've ever
(13:01):
driven. Cam best now you gotright away. Didn't have the cam best
okay. Nineteen ninety three, Ihad the ten hole in the president President's
Pace at Meadowland, Okay, andhe was about fourth and fifth favorite ten
to one. But the ten holes, it's tough. I got a way
kidding me, got a wait, got away tenth. I was seventh at
(13:28):
the quarter or no. Eighth atthe quarter, part fourth at the half,
and then second top of the stretch. Then he blew by and win
the Presidential pace best. He didhold the world record forty six and one.
It was in a time trail forquite a few years. But Bulldog
Hannover broke that hand over and Iwatched all his races and then now the
(13:52):
other night horse, Confederate also rightset a record to one of the tracks,
so uh, just to me,and that's unbelievable to watch them and
how fast. I don't think aboutthat when I'm watching. I'm just thinking
about I want my horse to win. But and then to drive some great
(14:16):
horses. Gallup blue Chip is anotherhorse, Gallum blue Chip. Okay,
he was at one point the richesthorse of all time. He has five
point six mil, but then foiledagain past that h since he's retired now
okay, oh yeah, I figuredhe would be. But to go uh,
(14:37):
to go to a lot of racetracks and drive and driving a lot
of great horses and meet alone greatpeople. You know, that's what this
business. You know, you meeta lot of great people. Yeah,
I know you do. I knowyou do, and you can't to me
and guys like Mike Cushing and peopleup in Maine, I don't think I've
ever met such nice people like likethe people in Maine absolutely love it up
(14:58):
there, love it. That's wayI loved coming back home, you know,
Yeah, well, they get abeautiful article a few months ago and
the Harness digests there. I sawthe rebirth of Walter Case Junior, and
you've really come back and again WalterCase and when you get Case and Campbell
and Ranger? Are you kidding me? Let's just start with that and we'll
go from there. Uh, it'sunbelievable. Now you're you're driving three horses
(15:24):
today, right, Okay, youwant it? You want to give us
a little insight. Maybe you knowthere's only one that's gonna legit. Shot,
when give me? Give me therace? Because you know I can.
I can wage your Bangor down here, I'm not the tenth. But
the horse's name is Richest Northern Dreamto trotter. Okay, he's got the
(15:45):
one post and I plan on goingright down the road. I love it.
I mean I wrote it down,Richie. What's the name of the
horse now? Riches Northern Dream,Riches Northern Dream. I'm getting you,
folks, I'm getting this right fromthe driver. So here we go,
which is North Dream? And yousaid it's either the ninth or tenth at
(16:06):
Bangor. Yeah, he's got theone post. It's ninth or ten.
George one of them. But that'smy best shot, in my only shot,
I believe, you know, Igot the etle in the first race
with a course. It's not notone of the greatest. No. Jacson
Bartler was up here the other dayand he's another great Yeah, yeah,
(16:26):
he's he just got his ten thousandas he did. He's only I believe
he's probably only forty one years old, and so he eventually, whether a
couple of years, will be thewinning and driver from Maine. You know.
So yeah, no, I understand. But you keep going and you
work, you work bangor you workin all the fairs too, I assume.
(16:49):
Yeah, I enjoy I really enjoythe fairs. You know. We
got Farmington a week from Sunde fryBurg's probably my favorite fair, like a
lot of people. Yeah, Iguess that's what Mike Cushing says. He
says, you got to get uphere during the Friybrook Fair week and come
up and stop up and see theraces. If you've never been there,
you've got to go, that's whathe said. That's what He's gorgeous there.
(17:15):
It's a great atmosphere. Well,i'll tell you, Walter Case Junior.
You are fantastic, one of theall time greats. And I put
that, I don't mind saying it. I enjoy it. You're you're one
of the best, one of thebest I've ever seen. Uh And I
wish you nothing but success. Pleasesay hello to your sister for me.
(17:37):
Uh and and wish you well. And I'll get up there one of these
I'll surprised you one of these times. Don't you worry, Walter, I'll
be up there. Okay, coach, I really appreciate it. Any Now,
what have you guys? Ask you? Now you raised? When do
you officially now they close like Christmastime? Do you take a few months
off then? Well, I'm talkingabout this winter going to Florida and training
some babies from all right, allright, I'm driving for a lot of
(18:02):
babies for a guy but by nameof Mark Cardiff up here. Yeah I
know the name. Yes, yes, yeah, I've a lot of success.
But thinking about going down there fortwo or three months and you know,
and when Cumblin opens first of April, you're back again. Had a
boy. Listen, Walter, Pleasehave a great day today and I've got
(18:23):
the horse down. Just bring them, bring the horse home, will you?
Please dream Yep, I got it. I wrote it down. I'm
ready to I'm gonna wager on it. Okay, all right, Walter,
Hey, have a great weekend.Sail load everybody for me, Mike Cushing,
Drew and everybody. All right, sailord of your sun for me.
I will indeed thank you Walter verymuch. Take care anytime, Have a
(18:45):
great day.
