Gabby Cooper was saying this, areyou gonna beat Gary Cooper? You're
sharing power, You have no chance. You might as well try to it
powerball, And there was always andyou know what, the movie kept going
to the clock. There was aclock in the Sheriff's office, and it
(02:42):
kept going toward high noon because that'swhen the battle was supposed to take place.
Hi Noon. But Gary Cooper winsout as he always does and joining
me Hi. Love those movies.I'll tell you they'll make him like they
used to. Joining me now isBabby Noon. Babby Noon is an icon.
It's that simple, all right.I'm not going to mince words.
She's an icon. Talking to MikeMadera last night at our game, he
(03:07):
says, oh, she's unbelievable,Yes she is. Babby Noon has won
six state championships in field hockey.Last week, she received a Goalkey Award
from the Sports Media Alliance. Butshe has done. She has She's got
like, you know, a thousandwins or something. She's way up there.
(03:30):
I could be off by a fewnumbers, but she is. I
don't know. She started the programsstarted in nineteen seventy two. I know
she has over five hundred wins.Five hundred. Your winning percentage is remarkable.
And I've called her Babbie the wholetime I've ever known her. Everybody
does. But I actually asked herlast week at the dinner. I said,
(03:53):
can I ask what your real firstname is? And she looked at
me like shocked and said, Christine. That's a lovely Christine. Noon,
and I welcome you, Babby. Thanks for giving me a few minutes today.
Well, good morning to you,the coach of the century. How
are you doing it? Ah,you're sweetheart. Last week at the dinner
(04:17):
and you gave me your real name. It's a lovely name. I love
Christine. But you told me thatit was your sister that actually helped give
you the name Babby. Am Iright? You told me the story?
How she well, I couldn't saypause, she called your bab It just
stuck tell us that. Well,I don't think anything out of your mouth
ever comes out wrong, So yes, you have the story correctly. I
(04:40):
have a terrific sister, only thirteenmonths older than I. When she was
a kid, she couldn't speak thatmuch, but she called me the babby
and it did stick. So thebabby instead of the baby. How bout
that? She called you the babby? Yep? And her name is Goody
and we go by that these days. Her name is, her name is
(05:05):
Goody from good Claire. My brotherwould say, good Goody, two shoes,
once you on, once you off, And that name is stuck after
all of these years. So anyway, what's her name? What's her real
name? My legal name is ChristineClaire Claire. So right, so instead
(05:27):
of saying Christine and Claire when youwalk down the street to do they go
look at that? Here comes Babbyand Goody how about? And we both
have a lot of years, sothat's what we go by. No,
no, listen, I've always calledyou babby, So that's the way it
goes. It was such a greatthing, well deserved for you getting a
(05:48):
goal key last week and and andcoaching again this year. The Thunderbirds how
is the team doing this year?Well, as they indicated, when you
surround yourself with phenomenal coaches, phenomenalstudent athletes are outstanding, their parents are
(06:10):
very supportive of the community, thesuperintendent, the academic end of the world,
because these kids are students first andthen athletes. So yeah, we're
we are on a roll right now. We're going to be challenging the first
round of the Shoreline Tournament on Mondayagainst Westbrook High School right now. But
(06:33):
yeah, we've got a good thinggoing. I bet you, I bet
you are. And all the younggirls you have coached over the years and
turn them into not only great players, but great, great human beings,
great girls, And I'm sure theyall come back and say hello from time
(06:54):
to time and remember you. AllRight, so what is your record?
Do I have to look it upright now? No? Right now,
we were undefeated at sixteen and allgoing into this. So we've got a
good as I said, got agood thing. I got it. They're
working so hard in the community,in the classroom as leaders and student council
(07:15):
and honor society. They do itall and they're the ones we're building character.
It's not just about me, No, No, I'm with you.
I'm with you. You're right, that's right. With social media tripping away
and eating at our ankles and tryingto we are going to reduce that.
(07:40):
We're going to refuse that, Henri, We're not taking that anyway. Who
in the conference tournament? Uh?Who? You know? And I'm sure
I know the Shorelines are great conference. Certainly in field hockey, we are
the teams that you know, youyou really have to really look out for,
besides North Branford obviously, but whoelse. Well, we do compete
(08:03):
in the S division, as youwell know I do. As America student
population. You've got some great onesranked right on up there, the typical
immaculate in Sonyton and Canton just thename of your honest the goodness, these
are diehard programs that have been verysuccessful for years coming out. You know,
in Northwestern you've got Laylton Hall,You've got the SEC represented each of
(08:26):
the divisions throughout the state. You'vegot some quality hockey chapage out there.
Well, yes, that's right.Yes, God's country out there, yep.
And a lot of little nooks andgranteds and you all know anything gonna
happen on any given day, justlike you said in how many innings last
night? And just banging out thebig one. But it's still early in
(08:48):
the game, so anything can happen. Million dollar men sometimes in baseball actually
drop you know a ball that youknow you think of four year olds in
T ball to be able to soyou know, life, life has to
go on, and just realize thecamaraderie, the again, the integrity,
(09:09):
and you want them to always leavewith a feeling of a positive contribution as
young women, as young men, whoever you're working with. So that's what
we're looking for. Oh I thinkso now listen, I've not watched your
coach. I'm you're on the side. Are you as sweet as you are?
And as a lovely person? Whatis your coaching style? Are you
(09:33):
more animated on the sidelines. Ithink most people would say I am,
because I don't really stand there.I'm not like an individual with my arms
folded standing quietly on the side. And we've got you know, there are
a lot of coaches with us.Now many volunteers come in. All right,
(09:54):
We've got Yvonne MALICKI boatman, gotMaury Connelly or athletic director. The
coaches lacrosse, Taffy Gulbanzi and theseare all former players. Yes, I
understand. I'm and her daughter isa senior over there at Lesbian playing great
hockey, UH, as well asSabrino Lamerica. Great athlete. Please Sabrino
(10:16):
America. I think she wants.Sabrino Lamerica was my athlete of the Year
in softball. She's she's out, she's outstanding in everything. And then you
got Carol Torino Canada, a formeroutstanding North Brandford player. But I wants
to play to Quinnipil University and coachon the D one level at Quinnipiac.
So, George, what are youtalking about. I'm standing among giants over
(10:41):
there. I said it the otherday and I'm going to stay it again.
You know, these each of thesecoaches bring something else to UH,
to our athletes, and they're listening. They're taking it in like Bunges,
and yeah, I have high expectationsacademically, athletically, socially in the as
I said, in the community, and thank goodness, our staff always embraced
(11:03):
one another and that's what we're lookingfor united front. I think so,
and you got that going on thecoaching staff and you know, and players
to match. What kind of ateam is it? Obviously an outstanding team,
undefeated senior? Is this a seniorleaden team? Young team? How
many seniors on your team? Indeed, we have seven phenomenal seniors on our
(11:28):
squat and what has happened in thelast few years When they were freshmen,
we were in a squad of nineteenor twenty and we've only had that many,
so they've had a lot of oursityexperience. So let's talk about senior
driven. You and I both knowthat really does come to fruicked. That's
right. Last year we only hadtwo seniors, and they were the ones
who were the most helpless and dedicated. It's Payton commenced in leon A Parma
(11:54):
who just gave everything whatever it wasthe team. They led us with their
character. So this year we're tryingto come on back and go back to
back. But it's one game ata time, it's one practice at a
time, and we all know alittle thing to interrupt whatever. But we
do have these crazy, awesome seniorswho are working hard, scoring. I
(12:16):
got a sophomore and the net overhere, she actually o' rourke is doing
a fine job, but it's Ido believe in the entire team. We
went up on our numbers to thirtythree. We've got fourteen freshmen fighting.
You know, they want to getin there. I understand. Yeah,
(12:37):
Now do you do they play?Is there like an under varsity schedule a
JV schedule as well? Oh?Yes, we definitely have a JV schedule.
We're fortunate enough to play a coupleof uh freshman kind of games.
Guildford and Branford also did that withus, so we try to get as
much as the playing in there asas possible. But we ran the full
(13:00):
JV schedule off these along which asterrific as you well know, just developing.
Well that's the idea, Yeah, exactly, absolutely, come on,
we all need that. I coachedKav. I know how to get the
girls ready for the VARs. Isaid, your goal is to make the
varsity team. That everybody's goal, right, I would think we all want
(13:22):
to go to the dance, Solet's don't want to go. To motivate
these kids and listen, I wasthat person in the audience who listened all
the time. In the eighties, you promoted women's sports like there was no
tomorrow when it wasn't the popular thingto do. You are the man.
You are the coach, not onlyas a teacher and a coach, but
obviously how you broadcast, you broughtit to those families, all age generations
(13:48):
and everything else. So I saythank you, who goes to you,
coach tomorrow? Just you, really, this is what it's about, and
given our our kids here in thein your twenty twenty three and opportunities because
of men like you who provided. So let's call it like it is.
So thank you, thank you, thank you for giving us this chance.
(14:11):
I really mean it. I don'tknow what to say. You're sweet,
I have no i's there's no comebackthere. You're you know, you're you're
You're a goal key winner. Butyou're a legend, and you're a legend
for a reason because you're just thatthat nice, that great a person.
You're as great a person, abetter person than than you're a coach.
(14:31):
And listen, Babby Noon is inthe game. It could be it could
be Tiddley Wings and I'm rooting forBabby Noon because you are just among the
giants icon. Babby. I knowyou don't do these kind of things it
was who was there at the dinner. Your sister was there there, and
(14:52):
then bo Keolinski's wife, who herethe mind she is? And she was
telling you she's after I asked youto come on, she said, go
on, go on, Bab,go on, go on for a few
And I said to her later,I said, thank you for your help
in getting Babby to come on.But I wouldn't mind saying Christine either,
(15:15):
because I'll tell you that that's alovely name. Babby. Listen, I
can't, I don't have to say. I wish you great success and luck
because I know, no matter what, you'll do it with well, with
character and with class. I hopeyou win another state championship. How much
longer does Babby? Nowon wanted tojust you just having so much fun,
aren't you. It's all about fun. If you don't have fun, it's
(15:39):
worked. And I've never worked aday in my life as a teacher,
as a coach, I love it. I get in there. I got
a lot of energy and I'm notwilling to give it up right now.
Well, well, kudos to peoplelike you and Joe Kolinski. And I'm
doing this interview because of people likeyou get the word out to others and
(16:00):
mules and next generation. They've gotto see you now, people like you
broke the barrier and you're had someof those other individuals in our lives who
have walked the line. So fordoing this. This is because of all
the young student athletes. Open doorsand let's keep things going. Okay,
thank you so much, Coach Tomail, you and your staff. My heart
(16:22):
goes after you. Stay well,my friends. I will. I know
our path will continue to cross.I think they will. Bab you have
a great weekend. Ah right atyou too, sir. Take it eat
all right,
