AM and ninety six point nine fmw E L I yeah, yeah,
yeah, and he joins me.Now he is the head football coach at

(02:21):
the University of New Haven Chargers Footballand his name is Chris Pinsance. Good
morning, coach, coach, thanksto having me. I appreciate it anytime.
You know, You're always welcome here. You know what I mean.
I mean that you have an openinvitation. I had your buddy Tom Godeck
on an hour ago. You're onnow. And the University of New Haven,

(02:46):
who had just a funtastic season lastyear. Fantastic, uh, back
at it again. They are thepreseason favorite in the Northeast ten, which
is really the Northeast eight, andnext year with post they'll be the Northeast
nine. Not they just keep changingnames, but that's okay. I don't
mind that either. But you gotyour opener. You also you got opens

(03:07):
up Thursday night, and so doesthe University of New Haven. They open
up Thursday night a six o'clock start, taking on Frostburg State, the Bobcats
of Frostburg State, and last yearFrostburg State. By the way, oh
by the way mister Penzance finished eightand three in the regular season, and

(03:27):
there you go, and now youtake it. They're coming up now to
take you. Is this the firsttime you've ever played them, Chris?
It is is They just became aDivision two football program about three or four
years ago, really good program, great recruiting based there in the state of
Maryland. Last year eight and threeof the year before that, they were
a top twenty team in the countryand Division two, big great challenge for

(03:51):
us here in the first time weever played them. Yeah, but you
got him at home. You gothim at you got him on the blue
turf. That charges you're in goodshape. You're in good shape. I
thought. I just we certainly feellike our home place is an advantage.
And I would say, the firstnight game in University of him football history
on Thursday, Oh, I thinkit will be. And and you're but

(04:14):
you're right when you and you say, not even kidding me. I think
you do have an advantage up there, and I just feel this home field
advantage. I don't say that alot about teams. If I do say
it about you and about your school. And of course you get into you
know, as I was talking toTom. There's always a team you play
twice. This year it's Bentley thatyou're playing twice. But I got to

(04:38):
tell you, and he was sayingthat you really gotta be on your toes
and bring you a game all thetime because tell you the truth, this
league up and down is pretty competitive. Now. He was mentioning some of
the teams who in years passed andand I used Pace as an example,
who many times was at the bottom. Now with the new field, they

(05:00):
have a big program going on now, I mean, much improved this league
all around. It is pretty competitiveand pretty a lot of parody that would
you agree? I would. Ithink if you look over the last decade,
the programs in our league have mademore of a commitment to being good
football programs, increasing their staff, fixing up their stadiums, you know,

(05:21):
really really really committing to putt agood quality product on the field. And
you know, as Tom said, teams like Paced or you know, the
San Athels of the world that youknow, weren't great programs before, certainly
built themselves up to be, uh, you know, top of our league,
great representations of our conference. AndI think every year our league will
continue to improve in a year fromnow when we had posted there. It'll

(05:43):
give us another local team that wecould talk about and you know, compete
with. Yeah, and I thinkit's nice. I know Posts took their
lumps last year. They played sevenof the teams in the league, and
this year they played six of theteams. Uh, But you know what,
I think it's good. I thinkit's good for them. Good.
And you're right, they're from Connecticut, adds a little bit more to the

(06:04):
Connecticut in state, the rivalry inflavor, I really do. What do
you think about now? You're thepreseason favorite. You can't deny that it
was voted I'm away. I didn'tmake that up. That was in the
NewSpace, that was voted on bythe coaches there in your league. You're
the preseason favorite. You got thatbig bullseye all over you again, Chris,

(06:26):
what about it? I think it'sactually a great statement about a program
the past. I think it talksa lot about the kids in the program
and the culture that was built here. This is the fiftieth year of football
for the University of New Haven.I think it's a great statement that after
fifty years they can look at whatwas done in the past that they must
the best team in the league.People that voted that they don't have any
idea what they're talking about. Theydon't even know half our roster. You

(06:48):
know, they don't know who thequarterback is. You know, there's a
two football and you know, youknow, if that gave us a point
advantage moving forward, if it gaveus an extra three points on a Saturday,
big big fan of it. Butit really is just a great statement
about our about our school and ourand our UH in our past history and
the great players and the staffs thathave been here. How many uh And

(07:09):
I asked, so, how manyplayers you carry on the roster, Chris?
We brought We have over one hundredand sixty on our roster. We
brought one hundred and forty to camp. You know, we'll narrow it down
here to you know, have adress list for Thursday night to a little
bit over one hundred and six orso. You know, a lot of
excitement here at Anniversity of Haven,w within our brand new facilities and you

(07:30):
know, a brand new weight roomand what we're doing here on campus,
and we've got a lot of kidsthat want to be involved in it.
So we have a JV program. We play three JV games. Well,
very good, very good. Yeah, we're one of the only Division two
programs I think in the country thatdoes that. It gives our kids an
opportunity to play more football, givesthem an opportunity to get on campus,
get adjusted to college life. Usuallythose freshmen are going to red shirt for

(07:54):
us. Play those JV games stillcounts as a red shirt, and that's
still have four years to play afterthat. Oh that that's good. But
you're right, and you're right.Uh, they need reps. They just
can't keep going to practice all thetime without having something. So to even
have those three games. Uh,oh, of Van, who are the
other JV schools you're gonna the teamsare gonna play? We three. We

(08:16):
play three prep schools, three highschools Flats Prep School Thomas Moore Thomas Moore
from out Connecticut and East Coast Prepoutin Massachusetts and Brusity Academy and me.
We have on our roster. Wehave on our roster over twelve kids from
those three prep schools that are currentlypart of our program. So we use
it. We use it as arecurring thing too. Oh okay, that's
even. That's great, all right, So numbers are tough. I've been

(08:39):
in the Peterson Performance Center. Itis. It is something to behold.
And even with all those lockers inthere, they actually have another area,
another but another spot where other lockersare where the some of the players may
have to use. Is that right? Is that what zangersomy? Yeah?

(09:01):
Yeah, the varsity guys, thedress less guys. One guy, that's
right. I counted them that right. I looked at that. I said,
one hundred and thirty one. Isaid, where'd you come up with
that? He says, I don'tknow. It just came out that way,
one thirty one. Yeah, Iknow. It's Our kids have gotten
a great chance since June first totake advantage of our brand new ten million

(09:22):
dollar facility here. The Peace andPerformance Center is second to none in our
country at Division two, and probablythe level as far as the locker room
facility. I think you're right.I think in terms of of that center
alone, I don't call what anybodyelse has. I put that right up
with anything around the country. You'reright, like you say, probably the

(09:43):
best Division two facility in the country. That's what I would think. I've
been as I say, certainly looksit to me. All right, Uh,
so you got Frostbrook State coming up, you've got a chance to see
them fill on film or something aboutthem. Yeah, we watched the tape
from last year. I did alittle scouting from that respect. But just

(10:03):
like us, Uh, they've hada big turnover in the roster that made
a lot of additions that we've nevergot an opportunity to see. So there'll
be a lot of unknown on Thursdaynight on both sides of the football and
probably take a quarter or so tojust figure out, uh, you know,
scheme wise what we're looking at.But we do watch some tape on
them, just like I'm sure theywatch some tape on us, but tells
it's relevant and you know, we'llhave nothing to do with what happened.

(10:26):
Yeah, preseason thus far, AndI asked, go do this? He
said, Oh, I'm gonna Ihope they're listening. Is I'm going to
get in trouble, I said,I asked him. I said, well,
what do you think? You knowyou've been more impressed with in preseason
the offense of the defense is I'mgoing to get in trouble if I say

(10:46):
either one Okay, Uh, isthere more of a concern in the preseason
even when you're getting ready, Chris, is there more of a concern getting
the offense ready? I get theoffense go, we got to get on
sync, got a score or thedefense. Lot of times the defense could
be ahead of the offense. Uh. I just think that's that's a normal
thing. But what is your overalltake right now? Between the two it's

(11:11):
a lot easier to get lined upby defense, back people and hit people
offensively. It takes a little offensively, takes a little bit to just get
lined up timing aspect of the wholething. And then you know, here
a Division two, we don't getan entire summer with the guys, so
we'll get you know, kind ofan acclimization period when we get started and
just getting the momentum going. Soour defense to the ahead of our offense
right now, that's the way itshould be. That we should be one

(11:33):
of the best defenses in the countryand what we do, and we've got
a lot of really, really goodplayers. So the defense had a lot
more success here, but the offensewill figure it out once we get going
and then start to play some otherteams. Will you throw the ball as
the ratio from running the pass willbe equal, or will you look to
throw the ball a little bit more? I know you got some people that

(11:54):
can do it. Yeah, we'vebeen pretty bad. We've been a pretty
balanced team here in my time here, and I think we'll continue to be
that. We have first team Allthe League running back and Christopher As.
We got about three or four otherrunning backs that could really really play football
in this conference. We've got abunch of wide receivers that can catch the
football and tight ends as well. And really the defense is going to dictate

(12:15):
what we do offensively. We're gonnacome out here, try to run the
ball, hands the ball to thosekids that can run. Yeah, set
the ground game that will open itup for the passing game. You're right
the rest of the league. Imean, you got Bentley something, Can
I get Franklin Pierce AFC? AndI see this school here, believe it
or not, Lincoln University from California. Is that right? Yeah? It

(12:35):
is? There again, another startupDivision two program that's been a program for
about two or three years from outin California. A very unique situation and
half of the teams they play outthere on their schedule, or FCS teams
one UBA teams they travel actually tentimes during the course of the year and
just play all over the country. It was hard for us. It was
hard for us to find a gamein the middle of the season the way

(12:56):
our league is structured. You know, I had to buy in week six
and week eight. It was veryhard to find games. So we're fortunate
to be able to find Lincoln andfind them, and really lucky that they're
willing to come out here and playon the East Coast. So in a
heck of a team, Like theygot a lot of really really good players,
and you watch them on the filmand I got no idea what they're
going to look like when they comein here in week seven, But it

(13:18):
would be interesting. Yeah, Isee, you have a week in October
their week by but getting a buyeAnd Tom mentioned it too because he's looking
to trying to add another game becauseone of the teams the university actually closed.
I can't believe that, but itdid. So now he's looking and
they think they have another one linedup. Ro she would have two weeks.
You can't especially that late in theseason. Chase. You don't want

(13:41):
to you don't want to buy likethat late October November. That's then you
got to start up all over again. That that doesn't make any sense,
right, Yeah, Now, onceyou get it in that, in that
rhythm, we're playing a game andgetting going, it's much better to keep
playing. That's what I thought. And of course making the NC double A's
last year two tournament, et cetera. It's great how many years have been

(14:03):
there now, Chris, I amgoing on year to ten right now,
even number nine because of COVID,but year ten, year ten and preseason
favorite and Zanger I'll be honest caseevery Saturday at breakfast saying what's going on?
What that charges? Uh? Uh? But it's really great. You've

(14:26):
done a great job University New Havenand again. And I don't even want
to bring up as I could, because I know it's not a matter of
concern right now, but eventually maybedown the road, some years, maybe
universal would we be looking at Divisionone? I mean, I know it's
been talked about, but right now, uh, it's really getting acclimated and

(14:48):
getting things ready, So why not, you know, do what you gotta
do in Division two? You know, what I mean. That's a nice
I take a lot, got alot of work to do in before you
get even even think about getting theone right that is correct. We're our
goal is to just be the bestfootball program we can here in Division two
and compete for championships at our conference, get ourselves into the postseason and until

(15:11):
we until we win them all herein Division two level, there's really no
need speaking about Yeah, I didn'teven bother anyway, listen, Uh,
you don't see it during the year. You always have an open invite here.
Although you'll blame me for any lawthis count. I love these interviews
with Pensons folks, because he blamesme for and it could be even down

(15:33):
the road. Well you're always onyour show. And then we lost the
game. Well you're gonna win onThursday, and I know that already.
But anyway, and I'll tell youright now, I tell you what.
After you win Thursday night, here'swhat's gonna happen. I'm gonna I'm gonna
leave a message on your phone.I'm gonna leave it for you. I
gotta say I told you, Pensans, all right, Seriously, you guys

(15:54):
are gonna be just fine. Ithink good things boded and I hope they
bode well for for my owls too. With Tom and everybody and with posts
coming in, I just think it'sjust adds a little bit more rivalry in
state rivalry, which I think isgreat. Listen, Chris, thanks for
coming on for a few moments.Enjoy the day, and I wish you

(16:15):
nothing but success in the upcoming season, and of course I plan to be
at dot Stadium checking it in.Coach, I appreciate you spending the time
with us and everything that you dofor the high school and college sports and
the local anytime. Chris, thanksfor the kind words. I'll talk to
you soon, all right. Thankyou,
