Speaker 1 (00:00):
Getting in a practice for the Chiefs Sunday night in
Kansas City. Tim Settle Junior is done for the season
with a foot injury. Kamari Laster also could miss Sunday
with a foot injury. And with that much more, let's
bring in our sports Sox seven ninety Texans insider and
also a KPRC too. He's Aaron Wilson. He joins us
every single Friday. Let's jump right off right there, especially

(00:22):
with the last name I mentioned, Aaron Kamari last. Are
we seeing him on Sunday or No?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Still trying to play, but there's some doubt that he'll
make it back. Today's the pivotal day for him, but
he has my own to practice. They're preparing Tremontsmouth to
start at you speak right now, and yeah, I think
that's really touch and go for Kamara. He's a tough guy,
but it's a painful foot injury. But the good news,

(00:51):
if there is a silver lining, I'm told authoritatively it
is not season ending, unlike Tim Settle Junior, so he
will plague in this. It's just a question of if
he can play this week.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Let's talk about sim Seal Junior. He's out for the season.
Got the he's undergoing season ending foot surgery later on
this month. Tommy togy I stepping on up is probably
the first name. Who are some other names? I could
see their minutes are a rep count kind of go
on up Settle's departure.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well besides Tommy Mario Edwards Junior. Of course, Southern Rankings
is already playing a ton of snaps, but you may
have to increase the amount he plays, and you do
have the option of playing Nico Autry inside of it.
I don't think that they're gonna necessarily have big role
for you know, new defensive ends like Solomon Byrd who's

(01:38):
up on the fifty three, but I don't expect a
ton of snaps for him. Yeah, I would say toggy
I is the major beneficiary of the increased snap count.
Of course, he's played very well to be Cords called
a mister consistency. He's a good football player.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Jan Aaron Wilson joins us here on the morning Drive
with Dan and Cole and offensively, Aaron, now this offensive line,
I mean, did you ever think we'd be in a
world where we're going into a matchup against the Kansas
City Chiefs and we're saying the Sexans have the better
offensive line.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
No, I think it's not anything in one envision, especially
like when they're playing the Seattle Seahawks, right and it
looks pretty bad. They landed on this best five that
I think is solid. You know, some might say, you know, average,
I'd call it solid. You know, it's pretty pretty decent

(02:31):
at times. And they land on a kind of by happenstance.
It wasn't like, oh, they had this grand plan because
obviously they were playing you know, City Sow and Lincoln
Tomlinson at moments, and you know they you know, tried juice, scrugs,
they did many things. And finally, if you look at
those guys that they have out there, they're the highest

(02:51):
drafted they have, you know, the exception of Tomlinson, there's
no cut from the team. But you know they have
some guys like Titus Tower, that's the first our drafting
started at three different positions this year, and he's graded
out highly at all of them. You know, some of
the highest graded past protecting line in the NFL. And
Ingram has been like a career renaissance for him. He
was very bad in Minnesota, so I think you got

(03:13):
to go back to Cole Popovich and the coaching from him,
the offense line coach and run game coordinator, and he's
worked very hard with these guys. Last year it was
fifty two sacks for the season for CJ. Stroud. This
year only nineteen sacks.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
I even know that was the real number. Dang, that's
actually really impressive, Aaron. There's a lot of people arguing
about this, myself included Dan. Also, is this a must
win game for the Texans or can they afford to
drop this one? But as long as they do business
against the last four opponents, they're going to be in
the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
You're right, I mean, technically they can, but I think that,
you know, considering that two of those four are Chargers
and Colts, I feel like it's still kind of in
the needed really bad category. If they win it, they're
basically in the driver's see. Because the Jaguars and the

(04:07):
Colts play this weekend, there's a really opportunity here to
gain the ground. The Chiefs are super vulnerable. They're offensive
line is a mess right now. This is the time.
I think if there was every time to play the Chiefs,
it's right now. Again.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Aaron Wilson, our Sports Talk seven ninety Texans insider joining us,
says he does every single week here on the morning
Drive with Dan and cole Nico Collins. We've seen good
games this year, but I don't feel like Aaron, we've
seen the breakout game and Kansas City's a little banged
up in the secondary.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Could this be a breakout game for number twelve? I
think so. You look at you know where they are
in the secondary. They are a little vulnerable. They nothing's
really worked for the Chiefs this year in terms of
the blitzes. I don't know if Peel figures de Spagnolo
out or if he just doesn't have the guys to

(04:58):
get there. It's been kind of a luggas year for
so called Jones and the George Carlostis hasn't played as
well as he did in the past. He does lead
them with five sacks, but it's not like he's played
the way he did in the playoff game against the Texans.
You know, when he's got three sacks. They just haven't
been as dominant. They're good, though, I mean there's some

(05:18):
players over there. I think that they can be thrown
on because there's not gonna be that much pressure. And yeah,
the pressure affected TJ. Strout greatly in that game. There
was eight sacks, not all on blitzes, but a lot
of it coming on blitz you know, pressure that Spigeolo
dialed up. I question whether people have kind of figured

(05:39):
out Kansas City a little bit or just the personnel,
you know, things that they were able to mask in
the past that's caught up with them too.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Aaron Jaden Higgins has really stepped on up to make
the passing attack be a little bit more potent. The
last four games, he's at least had seven targets. Last
game he had five catches for sixty five yards. Just
when you look at his development, what does he provide
for this offensive personnel with Nick Hayley that allows both
Dalton Schultz and Nico Collins to get really vertical after

(06:06):
the catch.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Well, obviously he's a bigger target, which Cg's draft pins
you know, pretty easily. But it's more than that. He's
got you know, a pretty rapid, you know, jab step.
He's got an ability to get into his routes. He's
fairly sudden. I think he's a little twitchy at times.
For a tall guy. He's not just this guy takes
a long time to get up to speed. He's he's

(06:29):
pretty athletic, and I would say that for a rookie,
his route running is pretty polished and there are some
of the reasons why. He has a good innate ability
to spit in space and it's got good hands, catches
the ball pretty cleanly. He's a hands catcher. He's someone
that you know, just is able to present a target

(06:51):
catch the football. You know, that was obviously a mistake
there at the end of the first half. Obviously there
were more yards. Again, I think he you know, he's
younger player, maybe not as accustomed to the clock, and
they were all managing the clock pretty badly, right then.
That's something that was on Kaylee and the quarterback and Nko.
It wasn't a great end of the first half. But

(07:12):
you know, I think it's for other people to tell him,
you know, hey, this is what we want to do
if you do catch it on that play. But overall,
I mean, that's a really strong game. It's his career
high for receiving yards, like I said, and you know,
five targets, five catches, and that's perfect.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Aaron Travis Kelsey has been a problem for the Texans
in the past, but you know, this year it looks
like maybe the age is catching up to him a
little bit. Production is still there, but it's not what
it's been in previous years. How do you think this
defense attacks him on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
I think they'll try to get Jalen Petree involved as
much as possible. You know, Miles Bryant actually, who will
play safety. They had, you know a little bit of
success where he had a pass breakup. He did a
lot one fifteen yarder in the playoff game, but he
was okay the playoff game for the most part when
he was against him, So they had combination of those

(08:03):
guys will do the yeomen's work against him. I mean, yeah,
like you's saying, he's got five touchdowns, he's average about
twelve yards to catch. Fifty nine catches center nineteen yards,
but his longest is forty four. Doesn't seem to be
much of a vertical threat anymore, but he's a first
down machine. And obviously the connection between him and my
homes in the clutch. You know, those guys always find

(08:24):
each other. And I think he's still one of the
better tight ends of texanal face this year.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Everybody wants to have an opinion on this matchup, whether
it be the Texans are right in the driver's seat
of being a playoff front runner the Texans if they
lose this game, they're ending their chances of being an
actual legit threat in the postseason. In your opinion, even
though it isn't a great Kansas City Chiefs team right now,
what does a win mean for Houston, a place that

(08:49):
they haven't been able to get a victory in the
Demica Ryans era.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
I think that winning an Arrowhead would be an emotional
touchdown for the franchise, considering House of Horrors for the Texans,
obviously going back to the collapse where there's a fake punt,
the Bill O'Brien game, the you know, really the disastrous
December game last year where Tank Dale blows up his

(09:15):
knee and I was all full of pretty traumatic obviously
for the quarterback and for Tank, and I think I upset
a lot of players. So then they go back and
you know, the score was not a blowout or anything,
but you know, they couldn't protect the quarterback. I mean,
he's getting pumbled out there. Eight sacks with thirteen quarterback hits.

(09:36):
If memory service, it's a place where I think it's
intimidated the Texans in the past, whether they admit it
or not, they haven't handled it well. The atmosphere of
Arrowhead do you have read out there? It's been ugly
and they haven't played very poised football in the past.
So yeah, I think for the organization as a whole,

(09:57):
it's something they need to get over the hump from because,
like a lot of players so this week, these are
the kind of games you have to win to get
where you want to go. That was from Nico Collins
and a similar sentiment from Titus Howard. I agree with that.
I think that it was really critically important that they
play some better football and finally take care of business.

(10:18):
If not now, then whenever, when is it going to happen?
If you're can't win this kind of game?

Speaker 1 (10:24):
I mean, Aaron, along with what you're just saying right there,
is that kind of maybe like a signaling of a
changing of the guard that the Texans couldn't, you know,
with a win, say hey, now we do belong in
the conversation with you and Buffalo and Baltimore and others
in the AFC.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Exactly, it's a validation Dan if they can do this,
And that was something that really kind of unprompted Niko
was getting into. And I consider Niko one of the
guys that kind of take the pulse of the team
with a pretty positive guy. But you know, he's also
very honest and he'll acknowledge, you know, when things are
bad or you know, he's not gonna hype him when

(11:00):
they're good, but you know he's he's saying that. I
believe his words that this is important to them, and
they seem to have a good mood all week. I mean,
like the guys are are rolling. I think, you know,
it's just how do you respond? You know, where there's
adversity and Mahomes just got them going, and you know,
obviously it's good or cold all those things. You know,

(11:22):
it's gonna be somewhere between like thirty degrees s feeling
like twenty five or something like that for kickoff, how
do you handle it? I think this is a measuring
stick game for the entire organization. And when they've had
circle on the calendar for a very long time, all.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Right, I think the Texans are gonna win this game.
I think that they're not just gonna win, They're gonna
win outright in big fashion to where they send a statement.
But Aaron, let me ask you this, get you out
on this question. Are the Texans that they are to lose?
Is it because Patrick Mahomes is just the greatest quarterback
that we've seen in the last three decades, or is
it the self inflicting wounds in the coaching error similar
to what we saw last week in Indianapolis.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
I think the latter. I think that Mahomes, as great
as he is, you know, he's not as dominant this season.
And so it's if they cannot get it done in
the red zone, or if they have these untimely penalties,
or if TJ. Stroud has one or more turnovers, things
like that, I think, you know, or like we talked about,

(12:22):
but if there's a matchup issue, like what if they
just pick on say like the Tremont Smith or a
moles Bryant, things like that. Absolutely Mahomes of all, but
you know, things that they could have maybe schematically figured
a way out on, figured a path to overcoming you know,
any deficits. So yeah, it's mostly it's about the Texans
and the kind of football they play. I mean the Chiefs,

(12:44):
they read all those things. They are true, they're real
things in terms of pedigree and success, but they just
lost to Dallas. They've got I think some real vulnerability
there with the Chiefs. They're not likely as your Chiefs,
not even close. And I don't think they can just

(13:04):
pound the football on the Texans. Missing Tray Smith, missing
Josh sim Is, missing Jawan Taylor. You know, this is
the smaller, less mobile left athletic offensive line that they're
going to roll out there. And it's a bunch of
note names. I'm sure they're well coach By Andie Hack
and all that good stuff, but this is a game
the Texans defensive line should really shine in.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
Aaron Wilson sports TX seven to ninety Texans insider, also
a KPRC too. He joins us every single week. He's
going to be in Kansas City this weekend. Two quick
hitters for you air before you get out the door.
Barbecue burnt ends yes or no?

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah? Why not? Especially if they're at Jack Stack Barbecue.
I'm not paid to promote them, but I've been there.
I think I've been there seven or eight times. So
I usually go there when I'm covering a game. And
I mean this goes back to even when I was
covering the Ravens. We were going to Jack.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Stack, okay, and then Texas Barbecue or Casey.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
Well in Texas Barbecue of course.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Okay, seeing the right answer, we end on a high
note here. Good on you, Aaron, Good on you, safe
travels up to Kansas City. And you know, next Friday
we'll be catching up with you again.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Yes, sir, look forward to it. You guys have a
great weekend.
