Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're going behind enemy lines again, aren't we.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Alex Gold from Cody and Gold from of course our
friends over at ninety six point five.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
The fan of can't say George is.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Right now and Alex ought to start off with this,
the status of Kansas City's offensive line. You have Josh
Simmons on the ir no practicing, for Trey Smith and
for Juwan Taylor. What are we expecting to see in
the trenches for Kansas City come Sunday night?

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Hey, good morning guys.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Look that is the number one concern, The number one
story really this week other than just the playoff talking
Kansas City is how on earth are they going to
figure out to protect Patrick Mahomes with that defensive front?
And you laid it out there, Cole. The injuries are
absolutely a big, big concern. Tray Smith, who is one
of the better guards in football, has been out for
over a week now and hasn't practice. And then you've

(00:47):
got to right tackle on Jawan Taylor, who's got a
tricep injury. And so it's looking more and more like
they're gonna have three backup offensive linemen playing on Sunday
barring a big surprise today and if that's the case.
This is going to be I think kind of one
of those as their Chief's Office of coordinator Matt Nage
even said, you never want to hear it from your OC,
but he said this could be an ugly game, which

(01:09):
I don't know. I tend to think that favors the
Houston Texans.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
Alex Gold joining us from ninety six to five to
fan in Kansas City here on the Morning Drive with
Dan and Cole. Alex asked your colleague Carrington Harrison this question.
Neila day Sa, I'll ask you, you know, how your
audience is reacting. Are they looking at this as possibly
the beginning of the end of this chief's dynasty or
are they looking at it as injuries and just the

(01:33):
way that this season has gone that this is just
kind of a one off.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
So I think people overall are not concerned about, you know,
Patrick Mahomes never getting back to a super Bowl kind
of stuff. But I think there's a real conversation that
fans are having that, look, this roster has some serious
flaws and this front office has made some mistake. Yeah,
like any front office, you're going to have some wish,
You're going to have some bad injury LUCKA they definitely
have had that, but that Patrick Mahomes has been to

(02:00):
mask some of these problems and it's gotten bad enough
now along with just some other issues. I think even
some frustration with this coaching staff that he's no longer
able to mask that. And so now reality is setting in.
You know, they were a fifteen win team a year ago,
and everybody watching them kind of realize like they weren't
really a fifteen win quality of roster this year. They're

(02:21):
six and six. They're an average football team, and I
think the roster is better clearly than a six and sixteen.
But that's just the reality. So I think, you know,
if people want to say it's the end of the dynasty,
everybody has different criteria. That's fine. I don't think people
are necessarily worried that, you know, this is going to
be a two or three year run of not making
the postseason or anything, but that there might have to

(02:42):
be a little bit of a step back next year
roster wise, to make sure that through much of the thirties,
Patrick Mahomes is positioned to be able to go back
to some Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
See. I compared it to Tom Brady's first and second
run when he was in New England where they ended
up going to the playoffs. They were divisional round opponent.
They wouldn't make it the Office Championship. But then three
years later they were right back in the conversation for
being a Super Bowl contender because they utilize the draft,
they utilize free agency. Is that a good comparison to
look out when talking about where where this team is.

(03:13):
They're gonna lose some veterans, They're gonna have to like
gow some pieces, and they're gonna have to rebuild by
finding a new foundation in place to put around fifteen.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
And that's the thing, the foundational piece is that where
they're aging. You know, Chris Jones is gonna be a
future He's a future Hall of Famer, but age is
finally caught up to him. And you know, got big
money on the books with him. You know, Patrick Mahomes,
you're not going anywhere, but he's probably getting a new
contract this offseason. Travis Kelseeds is likely his last year.
You know, they really don't have a pass rush to

(03:41):
speak of, and that is a big problem for them
moving forward. And you know, I don't know if your
audience probably doesn't care as much about this as we
do in Kansas City. But Trent McDuffie, who is one
of the better corners in football, is due for a contract,
and there's already conversation, and I believe that this is
the case, which is hey, for the long term betterment
of the franchise. There's a real reality where guys they

(04:01):
might have to trade him to get multiple draft picks
to be able to build up this roster in the offseason.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Alex Offensively, how do you think Andy Reid tries to
attack this Texans defense?

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yeah, so I think they need to get Patrick Mahomes
out in space. You know, I think Andy Reid is
not going to go under center all that much. That's
been a huge topic here in Kansas City. They've had
better success running the football. But I think this is
going to be a game where they're going to put
it on the back of Patrick Mahomes and go out
a shotgun, you know, ninety percent of the time. Like,

(04:34):
I think that is going to be the plan, and
try to get the ball out very very quick, you know,
quick bubble screens, quick slants to Rushi Rice and Xavier Worthy.
I think that's going to be the plan. Knowing the
pass rushers that are going to get there in a hurry,
you know, they want to take a couple of deep shots.
It's just been something that other than the first I
don't know, month and a half of the season really
hasn't been there. The story early was Taekwon Thorton, you know,

(04:56):
and how effective he was, and he really has been
a non factor. Guys after the return of Rice and
Worthy from injury, they just have been off the touchdown
the field and in this game, I don't know if
they're gonna have time for that downfield threat to develop.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Alex Gold from Hose, he's the host of Cody and
Gold and that betting show on the Fan nine to
sixty five. Gihim a fall on Twitter at Alex Gold. Alex,
you boy, this something you said that this is Travis
Kelsey's last year. There have been some people talking about
the rejuvenation of his ten year and the way that
Jason Kelsey went out where he'signed a one year contract.
He wanted to try and make it back to the

(05:31):
super Bowl one last time, kind of end his story
on the high note.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Do you think that's happening him?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Because the guy right now is fitting nine catches, He's
laying the team in receiving yards five touchdowns. He's also
gotten better in yards after playing. He looks like he's
still is healthy. So is that still something on the
table for eighty seven to come on back for one
last run.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
I think it's on the table. I just think it's
extremely unlikely. You're right about how he's performed this year.
This is the best season he's had in multiple years.
And he looks younger. You know, he lost ten to
fifteen pounds in the offseason. He kind of had a
much different offseason in the offseason before you know where
he was obviously traveling the world and going on the
tour with Taylor Swift and all these different things. And
he's been really really effective and you know, physically, this

(06:15):
is the shape that he is in. He can absolutely
play again next year. The other tricky park, guys, is
the financial end of this. You know, next year, do
the Chiefs as good as he's been this year? Do
you want to bring him back? And that's where it
gets iffy. I don't think Travis Kelsey is playing for
any other football team in his career other than Kansas City.
So there's a lot of questions that have to be answered.
He was asked about this a few weeks ago and

(06:37):
kind of mentioned that, you know, he wants to make
a decision, you know, I think the first week or so,
by the first week or so of March obviously, so
the Chiefs aren't in a bad spot. But I just
think he has so much going for him off the
field and future career and whether it's acting or otherwise.
And obviously he's getting married this summer, so I would
still if I had a bet that he's not back,
that would be my bet. For the twenty twenty sixth season.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Alice Howses the get pressure on CJ.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Shroud that is the that is the million dollar question,
because they have no pass rush.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
It has been probably the biggest issue of the entire season,
despite you know, the penalties and the lack of turnovers
forced and everything that's existing with this football team in
big moments. Chris Jones's I already mentioned, has not been
the same player. He's been better as of late, and
not the same player. George Karloft has got an extension
in the offseason, and he hasn't been effective, and so
they've run into a real problem if you're Steve Spagnolo,

(07:31):
the defensive coordinator, if you're gonna sit back and hope
the front four get to CJ. Strowd, they're not getting there, guys,
and so Stroud's gonna have all day. Well, then if
you're Spagnolo and you say, all right, we're gonna blitz,
so we're gonna bring Trent McDuffie or Shamari Connor on
a corner blitz or a safety blitz. What teams are
doing is they're leaving a running back in and when
you're blitzing, the guy has been successful being able to

(07:52):
chip against these guys, and if you don't blitz, teams
are dumping it off in the flat to the running
back in some cases, and so they're in a really
bad spot. They have not been able to get a
pass rush. So you know what, what's the plan to
get after Stroud? I mean they're gonna mix it up.
I mean they will bring corner blitzes, et cetera. But
most teams here have been able to protect. And you know,
I know that Texans don't have the skill set of

(08:13):
you know what Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens did to
Kansas City A week ago on Thanksgiving. So I don't
think people are as fearful of a Texans offense. I
think actually that's where the Chiefs, you know, could have
some successes limiting their offense. But I don't think Stroud's
getting sacked multiple times in this game.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Guys, Alex, there's five games left for Kansas City, Los Angeles, Tennessee, Denver,
Las Vegas, and Houston.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
I'm putting you on the spot right now.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
If Kansas City loses on Sunday night, are they out
of the playoffs for the first time in Patrick Mahomes' career.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Yes, it will be. It will be over in twenty
twenty five. They got to win out, guys, And you know,
on an individual basis, you can you can pick them
to win Sunday against the Texans. On an individual basis,
they're going to be favorites in every game. Still, the
rest of the way, the issue is stringing five together
and this team has not been able to get out
of their own way. Cole not been able to get
out of their own way at all. And they've won

(09:04):
three games in a row once this year, and that
was a stretch against Detroit, Washington and the Raiders who
are barely an NFL team these days. So I just
don't see it. I don't believe they're making the postseason
in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
A couple more minutes again, Alex Gold ninety six to
five the Fan in Kansas City, hopping on with us
here on the morning Drive with Dan and Cole the
running game, and we talked about the injuries that the
Chiefs have on their offensive line. Is it I mean,
by your expectation is going to be non existent against
this Texans defensive front.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Not existing in two different ways, There's a real chance
it's not only just what the Texan front presents, which
I think we all know is a huge problem for
Kansas City given the injuries as well on this old
line and Tray Smith the right guard is a big,
big part of their run game, and Mike Caliendo is
the backup has really struggled at times. The other problem, guys,
is Andy Reid's commitment to the run. I mean, this
has been a topic throughout his entire coaching career, but

(09:55):
it certainly has been one this year in Kansas City.
You know, the Colts game, they were one their best
games of the season. What do they do. They ran
the ball, you know, thirty times with Kareem Hunt, and
they controlled the clock and it was kind of an
old school style, not the sexy style of play that
Andy Reid wants when you have a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes.
But that to me, this year's iteration, knowing the defensive problems,

(10:15):
that's what they need to do more So, I don't
know if I have much faith in chief Stans, have
much faith in them committing enough to the run. You know,
Isaiah Pichecko is back from injury, so it's gonna be
Pachecko when Hunt the two backs getting the carries. But
you know, even if they come out early in the
first fifteen scripted and run the ball, they're just not
willing typically to commit to it. So I don't think

(10:36):
the Texans are going to get gashed all day.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Long, Alex.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Just from a broad perspective of the AFC, we have
two teams that have young quarterbacks with fourth play schedules
leading the charge.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
You don't know what's going on with Baltimore. Pittsburgh's.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Pittsburgh they're gonna fish ten to seven and find a
way to lose in the playoffs. Houston's alive, Cincinnati can
kind of have some derailment. Is there a front runner
that you look at from the perspective of the AFC
that feels like the should be in the conversation to
go to Super Bowl?

Speaker 3 (11:04):
The only team that I can come up with because
of as you said, I mean, it seems so wide
open with really no playoff experience, and if there is
any playoff experience, and you know, there's not many wins
to go around there. The New ELYMD Patriots, just because
of the number one seed part of it. I think
ultimately they get the number one seed. We all know
how crucial the buye is. And you're telling me that
Drake make can he win two games two at home

(11:26):
in Foxborough against potentially an inexperienced quarterback and maybe a
field that doesn't have Mahomes, probably a field that has
Josh Allen. But maybe they're the sixth or seven seed,
and so can you avoid even playing them or do
you play them in your first game you've already beat
them in the division. I actually think the style of
play of New England with the coach like Mike Rabol,
the Patriots would be my bet currently, assuming there's no

(11:48):
Mahomes in the playoff field since actually represent the AFC.
I just don't think the Colts guys are going to
actually end up getting there. I've predicted that they're gonna
win one more game the rest of the way. I
think the Colts are missing the playoffs. And then you
go through den I offensively. You know, Peyton Manny was
carried by historically great defense to a Super Bowl what
in twenty fourteen I think it was or twenty thirteen?

(12:09):
Is bo Nick's gonna be the same way. I don't
know if you can do that in this day and
age of the NFL. So I'll go with the Patriots.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
Alex thirty seconds or less.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
I gotta ask you, besides your starring role in a
Holiday touchdown A Chief Loves Story, what is your favorite
Hallmark movie of all time? Oh?

Speaker 3 (12:26):
My goodness, you know what's so funny? I was not
a Hallmark movie guy until then, So this is embarrassing.
I don't know if I can name you another real
Hallmark movie.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yeah it wasn't.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
I guess that's all it is.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Yeah, I don't know any of these, man. I gotta
walk on a sidewalk a year ago in ninety five
degree weather and a winter coat and I had my
my two and a half seconds to same.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
That's Alex Gold.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Give m a fall on Twitter at Alex Coade, hosts
of Cody and Gold and that betting show on the
Fan ninety six to five.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
How much you are the best.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
