Speaker 3 (00:38):
Let's see if they run it to use clock or
if they pass and go for the win.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
On third down and eight, Stroud.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Back to throw, taking a deep shot again for Collins.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Adjessment was he in bounds?

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Yes, Collins delivers.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
And there you go. That was the weekend. That was
at least the football for Ryan. And with that we
say away we go and good morning. Here on the
Morning Drive with Dan and Cole. Sports Talks seven to
ninety one more day before Christmas with Me and you,
and Triple Lee is here too, which Triple Lee has
already factored into the show this morning.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
We'll get to that in a second.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
But I mean not mentioned, at least not played as
part of that montage.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Do we need to bring it up?

Speaker 7 (01:25):
Do we need to bring up how once again it
was an embarrassing loss for the world.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
I mean it did happen.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
So I mean, yeah, you know, we probably do have
to mention at least that it did because the Rockets
do losing overtime last night.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
But stupid Dennis is as.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
You hear from both the calls of Sean McDonough and
Andrew Catalan right there, it was a busy football weekend
around here. And now I can already hear Chris Gordy
right now where it's just like you know, hey, you know,
come out of the gate with one topic, can go
from there, Gordy, Gordy, Look, man, we have to acknowledge
what happened football wise over the weekend both ways, because

(02:05):
I mean college football playoff where this year a little
bit different than last year.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Last year it was all the home teams won.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
There were no competitive games in any of them, every
single one of them. They were laughers, and the home
teams moved on. So five through eight they were all
on to the next round. You had one through eight
in the next round. But Friday night gets it started off.
You're Alabama Crimson Tide. There was a bet between you
and Triple E, and Triple E, being a man of
his word, paid off on it.

Speaker 7 (02:33):
This morning I'm looking at a six pack of Shinerbock
and I'm just trying to find a way to keep
it cool until I get off work today.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
I'll find a way to put in the fridge and
then put a note on.

Speaker 7 (02:42):
Hopefully it's not a scalar situation with the moistmaker, like
I'm praying to God that somebody is not a degenerate alcoholic.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
Who needs beer, who needs to have a beer at
ninety fifteen in the morning, because they all know why
this is here, but triple A seventeen nothing late.

Speaker 7 (02:58):
I have no idea how it came out. I have
no idea what happened in the second half. But the
thirty four to seven round by the Alabama Crimson ted
puts them in the next round of face off against
number one Indiana in the Rose Bowl. And then if
you are a fan of great defensive performances, then you
were in for a treat down a Kyle Field on
Saturday morning, eleven am. Kick wins going at thirty miles

(03:19):
per hour, nobody can make a field goal. Both teams
basically said, hey, we don't want to win this football game.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Do you want to win this football game?

Speaker 8 (03:26):
Now?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
You don't want to win this football game.

Speaker 7 (03:28):
Malachai Tony is the difference maker with less than three
minutes on the clock finds winning the end zone ten
to three win for the Canes.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
As now they stay in the Santa.

Speaker 7 (03:36):
Texas take on Ohio State and Arlington come New Year's Eve.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, so you had both of those games to get started,
and then the some of all fears happened in the
final two games where it was all missed in two lane.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
That was just a laugher, not even close.

Speaker 7 (03:52):
I mean, I know, don't tell that to JMU fans
because remember you know that score line and those five
hundred yards. You know they're saying that if there was
a few things that went their way in the first staff, oh.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Boy, we would have been in for a treat.

Speaker 9 (04:02):
Guy.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
And you were down by thirty one in the first.

Speaker 7 (04:04):
Half, you were down by twenty eight points and had
only two hundred and forty eight yards of offense going
into the fourth quarter.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, a lot of the gamblers were not very happy
with JMU. How do you think I feel?

Speaker 7 (04:14):
How do you think I feel taking the twenty one
and a half knowing that with fifty nine seconds left
a touchdown score you.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Should have listened to Stanford Steve on game day brother.
He said, take the over. As a matter of fact,
Oregon's going to hit the overall by themselves, and they did.

Speaker 7 (04:25):
I did take the over, but also took the minus
twenty one and a half as part of a barlay.
I was gonna say, yeah, I say it was a
five way parlay. Guess what the under hit in Texas
A and M. The over hit in terms of the
overhit in the in the two lane two lane ole
miss game, ole miss hit when it came to minus
seventeen and a half, the over hit out in Olt
Knatson Stadium. And I had it all the way up

(04:46):
until the final two bits of the game.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
The way it goes, it's a tale as old as time.
It's always that final lag right there for Oregon. This
is why I'm picking against you now to loose. The
Blues Traveler once famously said in the song the Hook,
the hook will bring you back. Well, in this case,
I mean, you know, it was a different hook where
it was the final leg. So I think that now
we just need to get with Blues Traveler and tell

(05:09):
them to, you know, make the final leg. We'll bring
you back by the way, you got to find a
way to be able to harmonize that.

Speaker 7 (05:15):
But by the way, just as everyone else, it was
a crappy game yesterday, but still twenty three to twenty
one foscore Houston Texans gets ten wins.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
They are still the seventh seed in the.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah, so you know that was another thing, you know, obviously,
as I mentioned, I mean, we had to mention multiple
things here in this first segment where it was a
helter skelter game. CJ was not good, the offense as
a whole was not good, and a two win football
team took you to the brink. I mean, the two
win football team took you to a miraculous catch where

(05:46):
a left foot in an elbow qualify for Yeah, you're
in bounds, that's a completed catch. Now you get to
take knees and that's how the Texans are able to
escape with a two point win.

Speaker 7 (05:57):
Look, okay, let's start off with the good before we
go into the net, and everyone just go ahead and
be pissed off at me at mister Cole Thompson. You
also have damn Matthews hou triple a on social media.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Here's the good news before you keep going is that.
You know one of your biggest detractors on that I
think is on board with you this morning, So I
think you might have a convert out there on the
southwest side.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Sure, a win is a win. Nobody's gonna be complaining.

Speaker 7 (06:21):
For the third straight year, the Texans will finish with
at least double digit victories.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
In the Demico Ryan's era. With CJ.

Speaker 7 (06:26):
Strout at quarterback, you have still controlling your destiny toward
the playoff. You had two games to be able to
win one more game and almost guarantee your spot in
as a wild card team. I'm not gonna look at
the division right now. I've been talking a mad game
about how disastrous Jacksonville was. They put BTA up in
the Mile High City yesterday to Denver, So I'm just
gonna shut up on that standpoint.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
But a win is a win.

Speaker 7 (06:48):
You don't complain. You have the longest winning streak in
the NFL. That being said, if you are okay with
what you witnessed yesterday seven one three two one two
five seven ninety, I would love to hear your reasoning
behind it. But I think that most of us in
the city, after watching this team for the last two
years show us very similar traits that we witnessed yesterday

(07:08):
against an underwhelming team that has not been able to
find any offensive spark over the last eleven weeks, taking
you down to the brim. Finally seeing Ashton Genty live
up to his All American status coming out of Boise State.
Finally seeing Gino Smith be able to have a multi
touchdown game and be pissed off about a win.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
I think that shows that we.

Speaker 7 (07:28):
As a society have come together and realize we have
standards in the city when it comes to football. We
have expectations when it comes to what are supposed to
be the goals at the end of the season. We
have overall identities and priorities that we believe need to
be addressed when you're playing against underwhelming franchises, and that
is to quite literally take them to the woodshed, close

(07:50):
the door, make sure that the sound is muffled so
that way nobody can hear how bad it is, and
completely obliterate them.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
And it wasn't that yesterday.

Speaker 7 (07:58):
And unfortunately you can't play Nick Kayley because everyone loves
to go ahead and make him the scapegoat and everything.
Nick Cayley's out out there making bath throws the way
that CJ. Strouded in the first half. You can't blame
the overall defensive formalities because guess what, finally, the depth
of your defensive line of losing guys like Mario Edwards,
losing guys like Tim Settle that came back to Ruce Miles.

(08:18):
Bryant was a liability in coverage yesterday. He allowed the
brock Bauers touchdown. He was very much out of sync
when it came to the Ashton Genty touchdown. Terrible form
tackling in the open field. And I never thought I
would say these words because I just thought this team
was better than that. But my god, I never realized
how important is these Al Shaier was the middle of

(08:39):
the defense. Just the performance of what we saw trying
to slow down a running back that up until this
point had basically been bottled up and been waiting to
kind of crack on open for the last six weeks,
would have probably been still intact if you had Agent
zero out there.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
So overall it was a sloppy performance.

Speaker 7 (08:57):
You don't complain about a win because if it is
a win, but it is not again to where you
feel out comfortable afterwards, going, hey, we get to go
on the road and face off against New England. We
need to go face off against Ember. We had to
go face off against Jacksonville. You play that way next
week against a team that right now has no offensive
line and they sure is how We're not gonna feel
bad for your offensive line. Ones, you're gonna get killed
and you're gonna lose by at least fourteen.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
And this is also a tale of the stats don't
tell the story because you look at CJ. Stroud's final
stat line, twenty three of thirty five, one hundred and
eighty seven yards.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
That's not great. His longest pass was twenty four yards.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
I mean, it's just, you know, without putting eyes on
those thirty five throws, I mean, he was off, man,
he was. And here's the thing too, is you know,
far be it from me to do the mechanical thing,
because I mean I can't throw a football like CJ.
Stroud can and most of us cannot. But I mean,
it's just it looked like he reverted some old bad habits.

(09:53):
I mean, was seeing some of those throws stailing on
him and that's that's not something that we had seen.
And It wasn't like he was facing a massive amount
of pressure. I would say he was facing what modest pressure.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Zero sax a lot in this game.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
So I mean you did have that, but I mean
you had no run game to speak of whatsoever. You
also too with you mentioned it, I mean not having
Tim Settle, not having Mario Edwards, that seems like it
hurts you a lot. Aziz al Shaier, I mean, he's
basically become Demiko's extended brain out there on the field.
You know they talk about the quarterback is the extension

(10:30):
of the head coach. Well, you know the strong side
linebacker is the extension of your head coach as well.

Speaker 7 (10:37):
I mean, he wears the green dot. He's the one
getting the calls, he's the one setting up the defense.
It was clear as day that they were missing numbers
that were out there yesterday.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Really was, and the Texans able to at least, you know.
I mean, that's one of those I don't think that
it's necessarily you come off the field feeling like it
was a loss, because it wasn't.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
You won. But I mean I.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Haven't checked Texans, and this isn't to say that this
is you know, the whole end all be all.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
But you know how they're usually pretty quick to put.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
The hey, it's exciting we won coming off the field,
and there's some sort of quip that mentions like whatever
city they're from, or some sort of play on their
name or something like that.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
I didn't see any of those things.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
I'm guessing that maybe the Texans social was told by
somebody on the sidelines, Hey, we're we're not going to
do it today. We'll do Demiko's speech. We'll let the
guys talk. But aside from that, just we're we're not
feeling good about that.

Speaker 7 (11:29):
There was a Will Anderson clip of him saying thanks
to the fans for being out here.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
We'll see you for the season finale.

Speaker 7 (11:33):
Like I mean, like it was very quick to the
point of win's a win, We're moving on.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
We got to get ready because of the way that
we look today.

Speaker 7 (11:40):
We will get our asses handed to us on the
road on a Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
And brother too.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
I mean, they were treating it like it was fan
appreciation Day yesterday with some of the prizes they were
giving away. You got a lady went in a car,
you got somebody went in one hundred thousand dollars. You
got somebody else went in a or three thirty thousand dollars?

Speaker 2 (11:58):
What was it? One of the Texas Laws games was
a million dollars? Was in there? That nobody won?

Speaker 7 (12:03):
Well, at least they rewarded them for coming to face
off against a two win team that actually made it
a competitive matchup, which is a problem again, Like that's
the thing is like Nope, Like okay, Dan Trablie seven one,
seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Is anyone mad that the Texans won?

Speaker 7 (12:19):
No, But we have priorities, and we have standards in
this city, and you know what, I think that we
can all come together and finally admit. It's nice to
know that this team is able to come together and realize.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
That's not good enough in a win. That's not good.

Speaker 7 (12:34):
Enough for us to be able to say we feel
content moving into the playoffs. Like thankfully, I've seen more
people actually lean on my side than on the side
of oh, well, you can't complain Baker Scamp Two's when
it comes to no, we can't complain because you want
to what that's a performance that you expect from a
team that is supposed to go seven to ten, not
a team that's supposed to be on a nine game
winning streak to close out the year, finished twelve and five,

(12:57):
and view themselves as one of the premier teams in
the in the post season.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Pitcher well and standards are important for sure, and the
Texans to get a little bit more help to entrench
themselves into the playoff picture last night. We'll get into
that also, do you want to continue with the Texans conversation?
A lot of CFP as a matter of fact, coming
up here in about fifteen minutes, we're gonna catch up
with our good buddy Peter Burns from the SEC Network.

(13:21):
He was in the building in Kyle Field on Saturday.
I want to be able to get with him. Sean
Garaja from CBS Sports is also going to join us,
and we'll also get a little bit later on in
the show. At eight o'clock hour, the Astros make a trade,
so I mean they at least are doing something and
what more could come? Dana Brown with some thoughts on that.

(13:42):
We'll have that too as we continue here. But with
the Texans, was yesterday needed at a certain point? Was
it needed for the Texans. We'll discuss that as we're
just getting going here on a Monday, right here on
a Christmas week, it is the Morning Drive with Dan
and Coles Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 10 (14:01):
Good Morning Dry with and Cole on Sports Talk seven ninety,
home of the Strolls, Rockets, and Houston's best sports talk.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Get to was it needed for the Texans.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
We'll talk about that here in just a few but
Roger wants to wait and to get us going this morning.
Good morning, Roger. All the phones are doing it again,
all right, Roger, good morning. Hello, Yep, we got you man.

Speaker 9 (14:33):
All right, Hey, good morning Dan and he who else
with you? There?

Speaker 2 (14:37):
Yeah? Cole's here. I ain't go anywhere.

Speaker 9 (14:39):
Okay, there you go, and so yeah, okay, hey hey
it's Christmas man. We don't have time for that sour
notes anyway. Uh So, Yeah. The complacency thing, it's it's
a it's a word that kind of means a lot
with the teams, mostly in Houston. Seems like it h
the Texans. The Texans battle against complacency. Yesterday they did

(15:03):
what they need to do to win, and then win
to win and you move on. Yeah, they can look
at it on the table. They're gonna walk it back
and see what they need to do. Uh in order
to get another win against the Rams or is it
the Chargers Chargers Yeah, Chargers, Yeah, Chargers. So h one
of those teams.

Speaker 7 (15:20):
Any does anybody moving forward? I'll just go with that.
That's that's probably the best one of the team that
used to be in San Diego.

Speaker 9 (15:28):
Exactly. So so let's talk about those Rockets. Man. Uh yeah,
I love you know they they they battle against complacency
a lot. They have everything they do they need to
do to win, even without the last component, which is finishment.
That they have enough. I think they do need a facilitator.
I'll give them that. But yesterday was just another That's

(15:48):
probably why the second worst loss of the season. The
first one was a couple of days back when they
they blew twenty five point l But man, you know,
I'll be for all the good that he does and
hold beautiful on if he throws a nice fancy footwork
man that shot that start that fast break to get
that last to get that last three, I was a killer.

Speaker 11 (16:10):
Man.

Speaker 9 (16:11):
That's just not being aware of, you know, not not
having that basking basketball acumen high enough. Man, you don't
pull up a shot like that, you know you can
walk it down and maybe get it two. But god,
that was just an unnecessary heave. I just don't get it,
you know. I, Like I said, I hope they do
better moving forward.

Speaker 12 (16:28):
Man.

Speaker 9 (16:28):
I just and have you heard about any of the
moves from the Astros that might happen this offseason? And
I think that's you guys. I'm a good one.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
I appreciate it. Roger.

Speaker 7 (16:37):
There are no moves that I've heard so far. There
are no moves that are probably happening up until the
holiday season. But that's again, is we have twenty twenty
six to look forward there. Yeah, Mike Burrows, is is
the move so far? And like I said, the eight
o'clock hour, we'll talk about that. We'll just start with
the Texans first. I don't necessarily think it was complacency.
I think that it was a little bit of offensive.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Lack of execution was an issue, and I mean that
was the thing. And I threw it out on Twitter.
People are gonna say, oh, Kaylee, Kaylee, Kaylee, Kaylee. Can't
he can't make he can't make CJ. Stroud complete a pass.
He can't make the offensive protection to be able to
get your running game going.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
He can't make that happen.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
I mean, I understand, you know plays and you know
putting players in certain spots, but it also this is
one of those where it's got to be a give
and take right here in the give has got to
be from the players.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
Yeah, guys, let's just call it as this.

Speaker 7 (17:32):
It was a very very very very very underwhelming I'll
go further. It was a sucky offensive execution yesterday. Everyone
wants to blame Nick Kayley for the play designs. Everyone
wants to go ahead and blame how they go ahead
and they turn some things out. You can't run block.
You haven't been able to run block all season long.

(17:52):
This is not something that you should just be so
shocked about sixteen weeks into the season.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Sorry, Like, I'll just call it as it.

Speaker 7 (18:00):
CJ did not have a good game plan from the
very early early stages. He was over sailing receivers. He
was terrible on third down execution. The offensive line did
enough to be able to keep him up right, but
him missing wide receivers led to punts. You had more
points by your defense than your offense in the first
half of games, and once again, as we've seen all

(18:22):
season long, you've been settling for field goals. You've just
been trusting Kayimi Fairbairn's leg which I'm not saying is
a problem because of points or points, and you're not
complaining about that. But you've been settling for fifteen draining
fifty yard bombs than trying to be executing inside of
the red zone, which by the way, it took over
forty five minutes for this offense to make one trip

(18:43):
to the red zone, which honestly once is.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Coned as his dan.

Speaker 7 (18:47):
Maybe that's not the worst plan possible because you went
one of won yesterday at execution in there, so you
know what, It's fine in that standpoint, But regardless, everyone
wants to go ahead and put playing on the people
who you don't like in the city, to start putting
blame on people who you do like in the city
and just have not met the expectation. I've given CJ
shrowd a lot of credit for what he's been able
to accomplish.

Speaker 2 (19:07):
It's coming on back.

Speaker 7 (19:08):
This was not a good game from him whatsoever since
his return for the concussion. This was not a good
game playing from the rushing attack. By the way, Juar Jordan,
guess what. Congratulations on having a one hundred one yard game.
What did I say last week? Let's see him do
it again. Let's see him do it a few more
times before we crown him the next big time playmaker.
This is why the Texans still need to go out
and in a running back. And the other thing is

(19:30):
just like again, this is a defense that we know
is good. This is a defense that when it plays
up to a point, it's elite. But they're not healthy
right now. And the worst part is that you're not
going to be able to hold up all of these
negativities in all of these areas of weakness because injuries happen,
and now it's starting to come back.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
And bye you well and thank God for Canymie Fairbairn too.
He makes two fifty plus yarders in a forty nine yarder.
In that forty nine yarder, obviously is the difference as
the Texans able to hold on and win this one
by two. Continue the sections conversation, but let's shift over
to the college football playoff because, as I mentioned, a
man that was in the building at Kyle Field on Saturday,

(20:08):
Peter Burns SEC Network. He's hopping on with us here
next on the morning Drive with Danny Coles Sports Talk
seven ninety.

Speaker 10 (20:16):
Myers crushes it said goodbye, Hey, Jake Myers.

Speaker 7 (20:21):
Catch every Astro game on Sports Talk seven ninety before
the iHeartRadio at Home of your Astros.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
The college Football playoff.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
A man is going to talk about it right now
because Texas A and M season is over ten to
three loss on Saturday to the Miami Hurricanes. He is
Peter Burns of ESPN and the SEC Network. You can
find him on Twitter at Peter Burns ESPN PB. Let's
just start with it. I mean, you were in the
building there on Saturday, just general thousand foot view thoughts

(20:54):
of what we saw in that loss for Texas A
and M.

Speaker 6 (20:58):
I mean, listen, I don't know who to blame more,
Johnny Manziel for for stiff and college game Day or
Ted Cruz being in the building and the crew curse
happens again. I think the number now is when Cruz
shows up to a Texas collegiate sporting event, I think
the teams.

Speaker 8 (21:14):
Are three and nine. That's a brutal that's the brutal number, right,
that'll get you fired. Well, I mean yeah, at least
you've got to fade him.

Speaker 6 (21:21):
You got to just figure out what his travel plans are,
fade him and you can make a whole lot of money.
But dude, it was I mean the environment and you
sit there and it's like eleven am kickoff and I'm
sitting there eating breakfast tacos and watching you.

Speaker 8 (21:34):
Know people tailgate. I go, it's still amazing.

Speaker 6 (21:37):
There's one hundred and ten thousand people, you know, biggest
sporting event in Kyle Field since last year of the
Texas Night Game, and it was kind of that similar result,
and that I think that was the big brutal part
about it is that, you know, every part of this
year has been about just crushing the old narrative of

(21:57):
the battered Aggie syndrome.

Speaker 8 (21:59):
And you had an opportunity to do it against Texas.

Speaker 6 (22:01):
You couldn't do it last year, you couldn't do it
against this year against Texas, And sure enough, Miami comes
into town, hard part game and they end up pulling
off the victor Peter.

Speaker 7 (22:10):
When you look at Marcel Reid two terrible interceptions, one
on the final drive after leading A and M all
the way down into the red zone. There's going to
be a lot of speculation on what is going to
be the future of A and m's offense. I hate
the one thing about the new era of college football
that you have teams that will have one bad performance
from a quarterback and people will say, well, in this
new day and age, we're paying a lot of money,

(22:32):
we got to go in the portal. We got to
go out in a new guy, because if he's got
to be able to deliver. When you look at the
overall brand of work and what Marcel Reid did this
past year for multi interception games to kind of close
out twenty twenty five, is there going to be a
really hard conversation now with the new offensive coordinator coming
on and on what you do with ten No, but.

Speaker 6 (22:51):
It's a cold You bring up a great point in
the fact that it's not just you know, you're not
at that point of the college football playoffs without the
play of Marcel read Over the last year as well too.
So I was talking to Roman Harper's where we were
flying back from the game, and I said, man, my
easy take here is that man, Marcel was late.

Speaker 8 (23:11):
You know, he was off target.

Speaker 6 (23:12):
At least nine times, and you know, and he just
threw that last interception like he like he was going
to throw it no matter what. Okay on that third
down interception and it ended up in the game. And
Rowan brought up a great point and I agree with it,
and he goes, all right, well, if you take Marcel
read off this team, are you a college football playoff team?
And I'm not sure that's the case. I mean, I
saw what he was able to do throughout the season,

(23:34):
and this is how quarterbacks kind of go out there
and take that next step. I saw that with Carson
Beck make mistakes at some point during his Georgia days,
and he's gotten a little bit better of taking care
of the ball. So you know, the worst thing you
do is you.

Speaker 8 (23:46):
Sit there and go, all right, this guy is garbage.
Let's go into the transfer portal.

Speaker 6 (23:49):
Because I go back and look at other schools, Kentucky
being one of them, and others that have just completely
whiffed on the end of transfer portal. This is a
part of it's a learning moment. You figure out what
he can do and try to get a little bit better.
But I mean that's more of a credit to also
to how good Miami's defense was.

Speaker 8 (24:03):
Guys.

Speaker 6 (24:04):
I mean that was they tried to run the ball early.
They knew it wasn't working, and Colin Klein had to adjust,
and I was just surprised they didn't have more designed
runs for Marcel kind of early and run a little
bit more tempo, because that's when he feels a little
bit more comfortable again.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Peter Burns, SEC Network, ESPN Serious SEXM join us here
for a few minutes on the morning drive with Dan
and Cole.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Peter.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
I mean, just talking about the trenches there. A and
M's gonna have a lot to replace on both sides.
And I mean, I know that when it's a tough
loss like that, you have people, oh, you'll be back,
But are we so sure that they're going to be
back at least next season with all they have to
replace up there?

Speaker 8 (24:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (24:43):
I mean, and I think that's a way to couch.
It is like, did we even think that A and
M was going to be at this point this year?

Speaker 8 (24:49):
Right?

Speaker 6 (24:49):
I mean, and again I think going into the season,
you know, Daniel and I probably talked to SEC media
days and if we would have probably predicted what A
and M was going to do, I don't know if
we would have predicted a college football playoff birth of
our home playoff game I probably have predicted by looking
back it was either eight and four or nine to three.

Speaker 8 (25:05):
Because of how tough the SEC.

Speaker 6 (25:06):
Is and now going to nine conference games and only
having one buy, you have to recalibrate your mind of
going Every team is going to be different. This is
not program building like it was back in like twenty
seventeen twenty eighteen.

Speaker 8 (25:19):
For programs you could stack talent and there was no
transfer portal. So the thing you got going forward is
that there's momentum.

Speaker 6 (25:25):
It's a hungry fan base, and you have a whole
hell of a lot of money in that A and
M brand, and they're proud of it. And then now
you get the momentum of help. You know, Aggie's win
a national championship in volleyball. That's pretty cool. Like, there's
still a lot of good things that are going on
in the athletic department. So this is not like a
team like Nebraska that can ever get it in the gear.

Speaker 8 (25:43):
A and M got it in the gear.

Speaker 6 (25:45):
They just got to find the way to take that
next step.

Speaker 7 (25:47):
You were there in person, and something that drives me crazy, Peter,
is just the way people talk about games when they
think that they know the storyline, but they clearly don't
like we're talking about in the Big ten Championship at ten,
I mean at thirteen to ten finish, where it's one
or two throws from Fernando Mendoza and it's an instant classic. Meanwhile,
we get great defensive play from Ruben Bain. He is

(26:07):
a terror coming off of the front.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Seven.

Speaker 7 (26:09):
You get seven sacks on Marcel Reid. This is a
defensive line that handled business against Notre Dame earlier in
the season. There's over six hundred total yards of offense
put in this game, one major touchdown from Malechai Tony.
But then people are like, oh, snooze fest because there
was only ten points score, Like when you're there in person,
can you like explain, like why is there so many
negative narratives because if it's a slow game offensively.

Speaker 6 (26:33):
I'm smiling here in the studio before my show that
you brought that up, because that's one of my first
takes I'm going to have is I was in the
building in twenty eleven for Alabama versus LSU nine to six,
the game of the century, and I remember people at
the end of the day going, God, what a horrible game.
I was like you were pregnant with fear with every
single snap, and that's what it felt. It felt like

(26:54):
a diet version of that where if you watch it
on television, you're like, this is garbage. You know, this
team shouldn't be in bought whatever. And yet all right,
we're not.

Speaker 8 (27:01):
Going to give credit for how good the defense is played.

Speaker 6 (27:04):
And and again I look at it as like every
single moment in Kyle Field felt like the entire like
your life dependent on it. And to me, that's what
a good football game is. And I loved Alabama OU
like that was great. So many storylines back and forth,
a lot of points. But I'll be honest with you,
like when you give me that only like two different
plays can change the complexion of a game that to

(27:27):
me is a well fought battle. And so yeah, I mean,
if you're in that building and you weren't entertained, you
may not be happy with the result. But if you
weren't entertained, then get the hell out of you. You're
not a real college football fan.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
The Man last week called the Big Ten a college
football version of.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
A Ponzi scheme.

Speaker 3 (27:44):
He is SEC Networks that Peter Burns joining us here
that not wrong. You're not, You're not. I mean there's
a handful of teams and then pretty much everybody else.
I mean, I'm sure there are SEC teams who wish
they could play Purdue in Iowa and Wisconsin and teams
like that.

Speaker 7 (28:01):
Don't say that too loud, boys, because apparently the SEC
is just there's a hypothetical win coming their way despite
Notre Dame sitting at twelve and two this morning.

Speaker 3 (28:07):
Right, it's it's overrated all of that. You know, we've
all heard it. But I mean, just for the rest
of the SEC. I mean, you had two playing against
each other Friday night, Bama able to get the bounce
back win and move on, and then of course Ole
miss being able to do what they did with Pete
Golden coaching his first game.

Speaker 6 (28:28):
Yeah, I mean, to me, the old myth thing, it
was rinchwash repeat. They just finished off the greatest regular
season home slate in probably maybe college football history, going
nine to zero and winning a college football game. But
I'm gonna flip it to the Alabama ou thing and
remember a couple of years ago. If you're a college
football fan, you remember remember Elijah Moore in the Egg
Bowl and he did the old MYS player scores a

(28:48):
touchdown and did the dog piece celebration and they end
up missing the extra point and then like nineteen coaches
got fired because of the butterfly effect. Think about that play.
Bama ou OU's up what seventeen three or something along
those lines.

Speaker 8 (29:02):
John Mattier, all he has to do is run for
three yards. He's wide open. He decides to throw it.

Speaker 6 (29:08):
The running back misses the catch right like drops it,
and then all of a sudden, Alabama punts or Oklahoma
punts it.

Speaker 8 (29:15):
It gets blocked in the pick six, and it's all over.

Speaker 6 (29:18):
I think that's going to be one of the biggest
butterfly effects of the next decade, because I'm a firm believer.
Had that play not happened, Oklahoma wins it and Kaylyn
the Bores on the next jet to Ann Arbor, Michigan
as their next head coach, and instead Kenny Dillingham gets
a contract extension. Kaylin de Bor is probably going to
get a contract extension out of this. So it's one

(29:39):
play that can completely change the dynamic in the landscape
of college football. And I think that happened in Norman
on Friday Night.

Speaker 7 (29:45):
You got two coaches going up against each other in Pasadena.
One you got to Google to figure out what his
record is, the other one twenty and five versus ranked
teams ten and four as an underdog four n H
on the road versus top ten teams. And it's still
not you, Peter, and not me naturally, but a lot
of other people would love to say, well, he's unhappy
out in Tuscaloosa, is it finally time to And the

(30:08):
narrative that hey, Caylen n Boor is actually the right
guy to replace Nick Saban and somebody who is going
to keep Alabama in the in the driver's seat for
an opportunity to still be a favorite to winning national
title year in a year.

Speaker 6 (30:19):
Out, Yeah, I mean again, And that's a false narrative
that comes from from from people that don't know Kaylen
to Boor, Like there's nobody that had the stones. A
lot of people had an opportunity to take the Alabama
job and nobody had the stones to replace the goat
and the greatest of all time and Nick Stateman and
he's like, I'll do it, and oh what has he done?

Speaker 8 (30:37):
Went nine to three?

Speaker 6 (30:38):
And I mean just a hair away from a college
football playoff from year one and now he's won a
college football playoff game right now. But again, that's how
fickle this industry is.

Speaker 8 (30:47):
Right now.

Speaker 6 (30:47):
They wanted to run him out after the FSU game,
and guess what what happened. They wanted to run him
out of the first quarter of Oklahoma and he just
so resilient. And I thought it was just, you know,
so fitting that they brought out fifty cent in the
fourth quarter. And it's like many men with death upon me,
and I'm like, yeah, well, I mean they did, and
guess what happens. He you know, he got the last laugh.

(31:09):
So it's impressive.

Speaker 8 (31:11):
And now I can't wait for Indiana Alabama.

Speaker 6 (31:14):
I think Indiana's honestly a better team top to bottom.

Speaker 8 (31:17):
But buddy, if Klein de Bor wins that one, just
I mean, it's fascinating.

Speaker 12 (31:23):
Man.

Speaker 8 (31:23):
College football always.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
Delivers, no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (31:26):
He's Peter Burns, part of SEC This Morning, also with
the SEC Network as a whole serious XM, ESPN, ESPN Radio.
He's also a bad bunker player, at least from his
college days. Hopefully hopefully even proved on that the short
game is incredibly important. Well, PB I'm sure that Doring
has already hit back in biceps, so maybe hit some

(31:47):
push ups before you guys hit the air.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
But it's always a pleasure to have you on.

Speaker 8 (31:50):
Man, I'm looking at it right now. He's got he's
got good makeup on. It's a medium shirt. You can
tune into SEC Network in about fifteen minutes and watch us.

Speaker 2 (31:58):
It accentuates su. Wait, that that's Chris Doring's game right there.

Speaker 8 (32:04):
Happy holidays boys, Christmas.

Speaker 2 (32:05):
There you go, Peter Burns again.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
SEC Network appreciate peb but no, I mean it's it's
with the you know game coming up with Bama and Indiana.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
Yeah, we're not talking to my household right now with
my dad.

Speaker 7 (32:17):
Oh, it's gonna be a very it's gonna be a
very tense holiday season.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
And that's the thing too, is that, you know, you
gotta love that with the CFP is that they're actually
somewhat going back to the tradition of your where remember
it was always I mean, they're gonna have the Orange
Bowl at eleven am on New Year's Day where it
used to be the Citrus Bowl.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
Got your day started, So the Rose Bowl, yeah what
was then?

Speaker 7 (32:42):
It was always it was always Sugar Bowl to close
out the night, right, Yes, exactly.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (32:45):
So what's really funny is and I Burns earlier, but
still when Many Men was being played in the fourth
quarter and you're watching as Ty Simpson is word for word,
repeating every single lyric like he is in locks that
with Curtis.

Speaker 2 (33:01):
At that point, Trivilie, I hate to be the bear
bad news.

Speaker 7 (33:03):
I knew it was game over right then and there
this second that you saw that white boy be able
to go pound for pound, word for word with Many Men,
game over, game over, lockscept. It was just a doune performance.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Yeah, and Alabama able to find a way.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
And as Peter just mentioned right there, it seems like
Kaylin de Boor to Michigan looks like it might be
dead in the water. But we talked a lot of
Baggi's with them. Get back into the Texans conversation two
as well as you want to get in seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. Again it's seOne
three two one two five seven ninety. Some would call
it complacent, but others would call it something else.

Speaker 2 (33:41):
When it comes to the Texans.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
We'll have that for you as we continue along here,
on a Monday edition of the Morning Tribe with Dan
and Coles Sports Talks seven ninety Let's talk Kobe Stevens
Apparel Kobe Stevens dot Com. Now, I intentionally started with
Kobe Stevens Apparel because you know how in the past
I've railed against saying for you to avoid the big
box stores. Well, in this case, Kobe Stevens Apparel is

(34:05):
now a box store. They had soft opening on Friday.
I had a chance to get out there see Kobe
and the crew right there, sixty four oh two Sweet
one hundred, right there off Luetta Road in Spring and
it is set up, my man. I mean, it has
got the polos, it's got the T shirts, it's got
the hats, it's got the shorts and pants, it's got
the winter options, it's got the ladies and youth options.

(34:27):
Everything you can think of that's available right there at
Kobe Stevens dot com.

Speaker 2 (34:31):
It is right there at sixty four.

Speaker 3 (34:32):
Oh two Luetta Road in Spring and still too, I've
been mentioning it Holiday twenty five twenty five percent off
your order when you check out on Kobe Stevens dot com,
and you're able to get all of those things for
your Christmas gifts right there for you at Kobe Stevens

(34:53):

there off Luetta Road or Kobe Stephens dot com, it's
never a time to shop Kobe Stevens Apparel. It's Kobe
Stevens dot Com, Coby Stevens dot com, cob Y Stevens
with a VS at the end, Kobe Stevens Apparel, Kobe
Stevens dot Com.

Speaker 10 (35:12):
They are on Morning Drive. Here's Dan Matthews and Cole Thompson.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
As so we were talking the Aggies losing ten to
three to Miami. Their season is over after falling in
the opening round of the College football playoff and then
also to bam Ole, miss and Oregon, all able to
advance to the next round in those games coming up,
one on New Year's Eve, three on New Year's Day,
and the Texans went in yesterday twenty three to twenty

(35:40):
one over the Las Vegas Raiders. I was about to
say Oakland for a second, but no, Las Vegas and
able to win their seventh straight.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
So you got that.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
And then of course the Rockets last night losing in overtime.
One twenty five one twenty four seven, one three two
one two five seven ninety is the number to get
in Cole What if I were to tell you that
there wasn't all disappointment inside the Texans locker room after
that close win yesterday in one of those people who
was not disappointed was Dalton Schultz. A couple of different

(36:12):
cuts from him. So we'll start first with just the
fact that the Texans had more than the Las Vegas Raiders,
and Schultz says, this time of the year, that's all
that matters.

Speaker 12 (36:23):
Win.

Speaker 4 (36:23):
It is hard.

Speaker 13 (36:25):
I mean, that's no slash for a team, like I
know they're won a couple of games, but like their
defense is given trouble. I mean, Demko put it up
earlier in the week. They've been like neck and neck
with almost every team, good teams, playoff teams, I mean
a halftime, I mean, we were in the same boat today,
So hats off to them. They gave us some problems
in the run game, and at the end of the

(36:45):
day like to be able to put together a couple
drives late to kind of ice the game out, like
we needed.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
That, and they absolutely needed that.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
And the other part of it too that we've talked
about from yesterday Cole was injuries, especially on the defensive end,
although offensively didn't have Woody marks, and people think that
that maybe made a difference. But with the injuries, is
Dalton Schultz willing to use that as an excuse.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
It's December.

Speaker 12 (37:07):
You got to find a way to win.

Speaker 13 (37:09):
So like, whoever you got out there, whatever, Like, I
don't think it matters.

Speaker 7 (37:12):
What matters the win, Okay, everybody say it together, Winning
in December matters. We're all content with winning in December.
Nobody is upset that the Texans won a football game yesterday.
They're upset with how you looked offensively. They're upset with
how inconsistent you were defensively. They're upset that you are

(37:34):
now starting to see the damn break in areas that
were such strength points throughout the entire regular season heading
into the playoffs, that while you may finish the year
twelve and five, you also may be bounced in the
first round of the playoffs. That's all we're saying. Two
shows can exist in the same spotlight. The first is
that Houston is on the longest winning streak in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (37:55):
Right now, that's a fact. Seven games.

Speaker 7 (37:57):
They're gonna have another ten win season under Deneko Ryans.
The other fact is they look dreadful doing it. Offensively,
they were inconsistent because the quarterbacks missing throws left and right. Defensively,
they allowed far too many exposed to play down the field.
And now you have to question what is this team
going to do over their next two games to guarantee

(38:17):
that they can at least go one on one, if
not two and zero, to have a better identity that
will give them the confidence that if they play up
to a certain standard in the playoffs, they have an
opportunity to make.

Speaker 2 (38:27):
It to their first AFC Conference title game.

Speaker 3 (38:30):
Well, and also to another storyline from yesterday, as CJ.
Shroud like I said, the completion numbers doesn't necessarily tell
the story, but is their reason to be concerned overall?

Speaker 2 (38:39):
Yes, we will.

Speaker 3 (38:40):
Discuss that as we get into the seven o'clock hour
here on a Monday, It's the Morning Drive, Dan and
Coles Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
KB Houston, a tv EHD two.

Speaker 1 (38:50):
Houston home of the Astro and the Rockets.

Speaker 10 (38:56):
Sports Talk seven ninety your home for your home teams,
and I heard radio station Guaranteed Human.

Speaker 1 (39:07):
This is the Morning Drive with Dad and Cole.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Two straight in LA, first against the Clippers tomorrow night
and then the Lakers of course Christmas day before they
finally returned back home, so trying to be able to
salvage a road trip as much as possible, and then
also to Texas, A and m loses in the College
Football Playoff ten three to Miami, Alabama, Oregon and Ole
Miss all moving on.

Speaker 2 (39:35):
To the next round of the CFP.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
Seven one three, two one two five seven ninety is
the number two get in as you know mentioned it
heading into this segment here, Cole, we're CJ Stroud. Yesterday
started off the game when the Texans, I believe it
was in the first half, they had run I think
twenty four total plays, seventeen of them were throws and

(40:01):
seven of them were runs in at least in the
early going. For CJ, it was accuracy was optional for him.
Optional it wasn't available for him. That's the very way
to put it, in my opinion. Well, I mean you
could say you can still say it was optional where
he just didn't take it.

Speaker 8 (40:18):
Sure.

Speaker 7 (40:18):
I mean, if you want to go that way. I
just think it was bad, bad, very bad. Not really
a lot of things that you could talk about in
a pose of light. I mean, I don't mean to
be doing gloom, but I like, at the same time,
you had Aaron throws, you had miscommunication, You forced some
things to where your timing was off, like I remember
on the very first like do you remember the very
first throw of the game, the Nico collins for a
gain of fourteen and then he was out of bounds

(40:39):
because he couldn't get his feet, And how are you
three seconds late on that throw because of if you
break when Nico breaks, that's a gain of number one
seventeen instead of fourteen because of where he is in
the vertical part of the field.

Speaker 2 (40:53):
But the other.

Speaker 7 (40:53):
Part that thought was really interesting is that if you
throw it when he's breaking, you're throwing it more inwards,
So that means that there's no shot of him leaning
out of bounds to where that could have been an
incompletion to begin with. So that was just like the
timing things in the tempo and the inaccuracies of leading
in throughout the game, like little things like that. Early on,
I think kind of told you that this was going
to be a game plan that, well, you may end

(41:15):
up winning, you're not gonna feel pretty confident afterwards. That
doesn't mean that you can't fix it. But at this
point of the season, what are we fixing was something
that we've just known to be kind of an issue
at times like it went. Yesterday's game reminded me so
much of the furities that pissed off Texans fans on
what CJ. Stroud was doing earlier in the year. Then
may people question how far can this team go with

(41:38):
they actually do make a run in the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (41:39):
And that's again too where you know, I was bringing
up Nick Kyley and people were saying, you know, they
were angry with him, but I mean, your quarterback was
not great. You couldn't really run the ball whatsoever. As
the Texans finished as a team with eighty three rushing yards,
I guess late in the game Jair Jordan able to
have some decent enough runs to be able to help

(42:01):
you get Las Vegas to burn their timeouts, and that
was nice to see.

Speaker 7 (42:05):
You sure stop stop like and this is not you
think this is just a general thing. Nick Chubb had
six carries for thirty three yards. He literally had less
than he had negative yards. If you take away a
thirty yard run, he had negative three yards before that
thirty yard run in the fourth quarter, Like.

Speaker 2 (42:20):
Can we stop, Like, can we all just come.

Speaker 7 (42:22):
Together as a society and understand this is nothing new,
This is nothing that has been like on display, Like
so many people last week decided to go ahead and
crown Jerward Jordan, a backup that was on the practice squad,
the next big time Arian Foster because of we all.

Speaker 2 (42:38):
Want to go ahead and see that name be able.

Speaker 7 (42:40):
To kind of hit the spotlight because that's what we're
accustomed to. But like, I'm sorry, you haven't been able
to run the football officially all year. Woody Marks should
not be your number one option. He should be a
quality number two. And that's not an insult to Woody,
It's just is the reality. And if you take away
two runs from Nick Chubb and Jawar Jordan in the
final eighteen minutes of action, Dan, you have negative rushing

(43:02):
yards on the day, Like you're hitting less than one
point one yard of play against a run defense that
was bottom ten in the NFL coming into this game.

Speaker 3 (43:12):
Yeah, and you know what, he marks one of the
players who didn't go yesterday as he's been dealing with
an ankle issue, so they decided to hold him out
of the questionable guys for this one. Nick Schobb was
able to play as he's Al Shayer did not play.
Derek Stingley Junior with the oblique he played. Obviously he
factored because his pick six is a huge reason why

(43:34):
you are able to win that game. And then Christian
Kirk also able to go in this one, so you
were able to have those guys help you out in
the only two that you didn't have were one on
the defensive end is eas Al Shaier and then what
he Marks?

Speaker 9 (43:49):
Who?

Speaker 3 (43:49):
I think that more with Marx, It seems like with
people I was talking with that it was preservation that
they went into this game feeling like could we play him?
Sure we could, but do we need to play him?
No we don't, So let's hold him out and let's
have him ready to go for the charge.

Speaker 7 (44:07):
Okay, but let me ask you, how would you feel
if Woody Marks in this game got hurt. Now you're
not going to have him for a playoff run, like
you would be frustrated because he is the best option
for you trying to run the football. It's not elite,
but it's your best option available. You're facing off against
a two and twelve Raiders team that's bottom ten defending

(44:27):
the run like this should have been a game to
where you said, Darangubwallee Juwar Jordan, please be able to
get together eighteen carries for ninety five yards and put
yourself inside the red someone.

Speaker 2 (44:39):
That should have been the game plan going into this matchup.
It wasn't.

Speaker 7 (44:42):
And now you need a guy like Woody Marks a
step one up, which, by the way, he'll have a
week off, it'll be a short week. He probably won't
be at one hundred percent when you face off against
Los Angeles, but it's better.

Speaker 3 (44:52):
Than having what you had yesterday out there. And we'll
get back to to CJ. Because, I mean, that's where
the concern kind of comes in, because we know that
you don't win in the postseason with so so and
bad quarterback play like that was that was I think
what was jarring to people yesterday. It was the inaccuracy.
I mean, and you mentioned the very first throw of

(45:12):
the game to Nico Collins. I mean, that's one that
CJ should be able to make in his sleep and
he still airmailed it a little bit. Nico Collins is
just so good at being able to high point the football.
He just wasn't able to get the feet and bounds.
But the good news is is the shot that you
took late for them to be able to then just
be able to take knees. Nico Collins was able to
get a left foot down then the elbow that is

(45:36):
two feet down.

Speaker 2 (45:37):
That's a catch.

Speaker 7 (45:38):
The other thing that I will say, and again I'm
not trying to go ahead and be dooming gloom this morning.
I will, however, because if I have to bring us
down to reality, you're not gonna get every single call
like you did yesterday in the fourth quarter, like the
Lonnie Johnson pass interception. As somebody who watches and used
to play defense, I can tell you right now, the
frustrating part about that is it's such a bang bang

(45:58):
play that even A didn't call that.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
I wouldn't argue back.

Speaker 7 (46:02):
But you were lucky enough to see the official in
the right place at the right time. Get the flag,
you get yourself inside the two yard line, then get
the encroachment call on on Thomas Booker.

Speaker 2 (46:10):
You're at the one yard line.

Speaker 7 (46:12):
Good play design, play action pass Dalton Schultz back at
the end zone, one yard touchdown. But still you can't
afford those type of plays helping you set up scoring opportunities.
And also that was the first time that you got
into the red zone all afternoon against a terrible red
zone defense.

Speaker 3 (46:28):
Well then you also had Juwar Jordan almost having his
head twisted off his neck on a missed face mask.

Speaker 7 (46:33):
Oh, officiating was terrible on both sides of the ball,
miss calls, calls that probably shouldn't have been called.

Speaker 2 (46:38):
Like that's the problem in this game.

Speaker 7 (46:40):
And by the way, don't even talk about bad officiating,
because we can talk about the Detroit game and how
that went down. Like I mean, the NFL so far,
Like I'm at a point where I can't blame officiating
because this is just what I expect at this point,
is that they're gonna miss calls constantly. And if you're
leaving your faith in the hands of the zebras, you
might as well just go ahead and say a prey
up to the college football gods of the NFL gods,

(47:01):
because they may have better luck than what you have
on the then what you have actually on the field
going on as I.

Speaker 3 (47:05):
Said yesterday on Twitter too with CJ. Two things can
be true. You can have a bad game and not
be a bad quarterback. But I think that the alarming
part of all of this is it wasn't necessarily that
he had a bad game, Like, you know, maybe he
wasn't able to get you know, a ton of good
looks in the passing game, or maybe he was facing

(47:25):
a ton of pressure.

Speaker 2 (47:27):
He wasn't really facing a ton of pressure in this game.

Speaker 3 (47:29):
That's what I think is probably where it's like, wait
a minute, this is a guy that should be able
to complete these passes and he's not doing it. And
if he's not able to do this, now, I mean,
the Raiders defense is fine enough. They're about middle of
the road when it comes to overall defense. And Max
Crosby's really good. We get that Devin White really good player,
We get all of that. But you're gonna be facing
an even better defense this week at their place.

Speaker 7 (47:51):
Okay, is Devin White really a good player or is
he just on a bad team and we're seeing the
numbers be overhyped because if he's on a.

Speaker 2 (47:57):
Bad team, maybe a little bit of that. Sure, Guys,
I just want.

Speaker 7 (47:59):
To make sure that we were on the same page
seven one three, two one two five seven ninety. What
is your reason for optimism that what we saw yesterday
will not be the case moving forward for Houston in
their final two games, Because I'll I'll keep it a buck, Dan.
If the offense looks the way that it did yesterday
against Los Angeles, you're losing that game.

Speaker 2 (48:17):
By double digits.

Speaker 7 (48:18):
If the offense looks like it did against Indianapolis to
close out the year, Philip Rivers may be playing for
an AARP check, but I'll tell you what, he's also
playing for an opportunity to keep his team in the
playoffs if they can win tonight against San Francisco. So
these are things that can happen if you do not
fix the faults of your offense. And by the way,
it's not looking pretty when it comes to your offensive
line because yesterday, late in the fourth quarter, Trent Brownlee's

(48:39):
with the knee injury and according to KPRC two Sports
and Aaron and Aaron Wilson's Sports Tuck seven ninety insider
Arianta Erstrie has a broken hand.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
So that is just.

Speaker 7 (48:48):
Another blundering issue towards your offensive line. To where you're
going to now rely heavily on Blake Fisher and potentially
someone else having to step on up. Will have more
information probably today and tomorrow on what is the status
of both Ursery and tramp Brown long term. But your
offasive line takes a massive hit, and it comes at
the worst time possible. But the first thing that I

(49:08):
will tell you right now does not give a flying
care in the world about how bad your offensive line looks,
is a team that you face off against in six days,
they're finding a way to get it done with just
the sheer will of living and paper clips and rubber
bands being hold together.

Speaker 2 (49:20):
When it comes to the trenches.

Speaker 3 (49:21):
Yeah, I mean you with those injuries, you had to
have Blake Fisher go over to left tackle, You had
to have Titus Howard kicked back over to right tackle,
and then Jarrett Patterson getting the left guard.

Speaker 7 (49:33):
I think that that was probably the case, and that
probably is going to be it moving forward or Juice
Scrugs going to go into left guard.

Speaker 3 (49:39):
So I mean, even with the group that at times
has shown some good things, maybe a little bit of
a step backward yesterday with some injuries, and as we've mentioned,
I mean, the Texans have been pretty fortunate when it
comes to injuries, but maybe as of late that is
not the case. So we will see how they are
able to bounce back against the Chargers on Saturday in LA.

(50:00):
So we'll continue to get you ready for that game.
Also react to what we saw yesterday inside INNRG Stadium,
but a couple of different praises for Demiko Ryans, but
he is not willing to take the praise what you
hear from him. As we continue here in the seven
o'clock Howard is the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole

(50:21):
Sports Talk seven ninety. But as I've mentioned numerous times,
it is the end of the year. I mean, New
Year's is coming up. What a week from Thursday, I
believe is New Year's at that point. So I'm going
to continue to ask you how your finances. I mean, seriously,
I know that's a personal question, but how do you
feel about your financial future?

Speaker 2 (50:41):
If you have any questions whatsoever.

Speaker 3 (50:44):
Three four six three seven to one thirty three thirty
three four six three seven to one thirty three thirty
that's the number to call to get you in touch
with trade and wealth. And you've got a lot of
the different offices here in the Houston area that you
can link up with. You got the Woodlands office, My
guy Peter is out there. You got the Sugar, Lamb
and Katie offices out there were my goy Chris is.
You got the Champions office two available to you again.

(51:06):
Three four six, three seven one thirty three thirty three
four six three seven one thirty three thirty is how
you get in touch with Trajan Wealth. Trajanwealth dot Com
is also another way that you can get in touch
with them at Trajanwealth dot com.

Speaker 2 (51:19):
Because we all want to be able to say, in
twenty twenty six, new year, new me.

Speaker 3 (51:24):
We'll also say new year, new financial outlook, and Trajan
Wealth can help you out with that.

Speaker 2 (51:29):
Again, give them a call.

Speaker 3 (51:31):
Three four six, three seven one thirty three thirty three

Com advisory services through Trajan Wealth LLC, SEC Registered Investment Advisor,
client paid advertisement additional disclosers at Trajanwealth dot com and
tell them Dan Matthews sent you in.

Speaker 10 (51:49):
Back to the Morning Drive. Here's Dan Matthews and Cole Thompson.

Speaker 3 (51:56):
Do you think anybody is having as good of a
morning as you are with what you got sitting in
front of you.

Speaker 2 (52:02):
Well, you mean a computer and a cup of coffee? Yeah,
it's fantastic.

Speaker 3 (52:04):
No, I mean, you know, just even further in front
of you, maybe like a little bit a computer like
to your eleven o'clock a microphone?

Speaker 7 (52:13):
All right, so I see you. Okay, wait that's one o'clock.
Oh another microphone, gotcha? Okay, so you mean ten o'clock, right, sure, yeah,
big old case, a six pack of shinderback.

Speaker 3 (52:25):
Than there you go, Tripley paying off on it. So
never could say that Tripley is not a man of
his word, and he was able to pay up on that.
So I mentioned seven straight wins for the Texans. That's
where we get this segment started. Because after the game,
somebody brought up to Damiko Ryans that this is only
the third time in franchise history that they won seven
straight games. I believe that the other time that they

(52:48):
won seven straight, if I'm not mistaken from the question
that was asked to him, Demiko was part of that
team twenty eleven.

Speaker 2 (52:55):
That was one time.

Speaker 7 (52:56):
I think the other time of twenty eighteen. Okay, start
off on three and so rappled off win to get
the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
So there you go.

Speaker 3 (53:01):
So, I mean, the Texas have been in existence for
a little bit over twenty years and not very many
times they've been able to do this.

Speaker 2 (53:07):
But Demiko Ryan's.

Speaker 3 (53:08):
Talking about the fact that that third time of history
was reached yesterday.

Speaker 14 (53:14):
The adversity we faced at the beginning of the year,
A lot of teams could have folded, but our guys didn't.
Our guys stayed the course, Our coaches stayed the course,
and we even tusted some things, tweak some things we
need to tweak. That's what you have to do, right
when our team it's always believed, no matter how he
looked at the beginning of the season, they've always believed.
And today went out just show if you play the

(53:37):
right way, you played with the proper effort right, you
do the things necessary right.

Speaker 8 (53:41):
It's just all.

Speaker 14 (53:42):
About getting to win. Really, it doesn't matter how it looks.
It's beautiful to get the win on Proud of our
team for continuing.

Speaker 4 (53:48):
To find ways to win.

Speaker 2 (53:50):
That's always our goal.

Speaker 3 (53:52):
And I mean, you know, true to Demko's form as
well of not taking the credit for himself. And I
mean you heard him even talk about it. I mean,
this was there was a time here where this team
was zero and three. I mean, they're ten and five
right now and they've won seven straight. Do the math
from there. I mean, you come out of that loss
to Seattle and you're kind of thinking, with what they
still had left on the schedule during that stretch, this

(54:15):
isn't gonna go well. And I mean remember Cole, at
the time, we were saying, can this team go Let's
see if they were three and five, can they go
seven and two during that stretch? And we were like, no,
they can't. Well, the good news is you've already done
the seven part of it and they two more times.

Speaker 12 (54:32):
No.

Speaker 3 (54:33):
I mean, and you've got a tough one on Saturday.
But at the same time, Jacksonville had a tough one
yes day and Denver and they went in and took
care of business. So you want to be able to
have a chance to not only win the division, which,
by the way, that's the thing. And I get it
too with where the AFC South standings are at the moment,
but they're pointing out they're like, oh, Jacksonville still has
a chance number one seed overall they do.

Speaker 2 (54:53):
So the Texans.

Speaker 7 (54:55):
No, hold up, hold up, Texans don't have a shot
the number one seed.

Speaker 2 (54:59):
They have a shot. I think it is a top
three seed. Okay, so the two seeds, So.

Speaker 7 (55:03):
I mean, I say they all have a shot the
number one seed only because of they would.

Speaker 2 (55:07):
Be the head to head Denver breaker. Denver would get it.

Speaker 7 (55:09):
And then also you have to throw in even if
New England were to lose on out with Buffalo, Buffalo
still would have to lose another game for you guys
to even mean that same conversation. Buffalo at this point
still has one more win over you, which is why
you have the win.

Speaker 2 (55:22):
But they're in the sixth seed and you're on the
seventh seed. Okay, so there you go.

Speaker 3 (55:25):
But I mean the Texans at the moment the seven
seed overall in the AFC playoffs. And still I mean,
you know, it's a game this week and you know
mentioned Philip Rivers. They're going to play to night in
San Francisco against the forty nine ers, and then they
come back.

Speaker 7 (55:39):
Called San Francisco cares about this game? Now they cleanse
the play off spot.

Speaker 2 (55:43):
I would think they still do.

Speaker 3 (55:44):
I mean, if I'm not mistaken, I think San Francisco
still has a chance to be able to win the West.

Speaker 7 (55:48):
It's so funny that right now Los Angeles feels like
the most complete team in the NFL. They lose on
Thursday night, all that happens is the two other teams
that currently have double digit wins in the NFC West
clinch a playoff spot. Both of them cannot only just
clinch the number one seed, they also can clench just
the division title.

Speaker 2 (56:06):
Boy, you want to.

Speaker 3 (56:07):
Talk about crazy ass scenarios too. I mean, that was
one of those where not only you know, the rocket
scheme going the way it did last week, which last
night was pretty similar, so you know, we've talked a
little bit about that, but that game on Thursday night
between Seattle and LA the two point conversion, I mean,
how about that for the player in the end zone

(56:28):
for the Seahawks who just one handed, yeah, just one handed,
picks it up and then they're like, uh yeah, hey,
that's two points because.

Speaker 7 (56:35):
Shargaing on the on the two point conversion that was
a backwards pass. That wasn't a backwards pass, and officiating sucks.

Speaker 2 (56:40):
Yeah, So it worked out that one.

Speaker 7 (56:43):
Is football man like play through the end of the
like at the end of the whistle, like okay, Kenny
gainwell yesterday, that's another one of just like dude, don't
stop until you hear the whistle. Because of they called
it initially an incomplete pass, it ends up being a pass.
Nobody for for for try touches him. He gets in
the end zone for a forty five yard score. They

(57:03):
have to review the film and they're like, yeah, he
wasn't down, nobody decided to touch him.

Speaker 2 (57:10):
Touchdown.

Speaker 7 (57:11):
I guess thank you Fantasy football godds for helping me
win a league because of that standpoint.

Speaker 2 (57:15):
But like, that's what I'm talking.

Speaker 7 (57:16):
About, is like little things like that go such a
long way, and it's been the difference. Like we've talked
so much this year about inadequate plays or ineptitude moments
where if you just finished the play, it's the difference
between you starting off the season winning and losing. Like
the e Marcari Day Marcono touchdown that was called back
that gave the test Titans a win, the ad Andi

(57:36):
Mitchell touchdown for the Indianapolis Colts that eventually led to
like to his trade in New York, Like so many
of those little things that played such a big role
on setting the Alkama games that that may end up
being a reason why several teams make the playoffs this year.

Speaker 3 (57:51):
It's pretty nuts, there's no question about it. And as
I mentioned too with Demiko, the Texans pointing this out yesterday,
for the first time in franchise history head coach starting
off their coaching career with ten wins seasons. He was
able to clinch that yesterday and kind of just like
talking about the seven game win streak, Dimiko not taking
credit for himself for.

Speaker 14 (58:11):
Us to be at ten wins now for the third
season in a row. I'm thankful, I'm grateful for It's
not about me, but I'm thankful for my staff, thankful
for the players for allowing us to be in a
position that we're in. And you know, just getting ten
that's okay, Well, that's not always the goal. The goal
is to get into the playoffs and make a run

(58:31):
and winning it all. And you know, if our guys
keep our eyes forward, we keep believing, we keep playing
finished in the right way. We have everything we want
in front of us.

Speaker 7 (58:40):
Let me ask you, if you were to start this
season off, we go back to Week one and I
told you that you were ten and seven in the
AFC South, a third straight double digit win season under
Demiko Ryans, and that still might not be good enough
to guarantee your spot in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (58:56):
What would be your initial reaction?

Speaker 3 (58:58):
Stagnant, really stagnant because you just did it the last
two years.

Speaker 2 (59:02):
Because I've said it numerous times.

Speaker 3 (59:04):
Texans fans they want you to be able to step
over the line. Stepping over the line is more than
ten wins. Stepping over the line is getting another home
playoff game in the divisional round and being able to
win said divisional round game and then going on to
the AFC Championship game.

Speaker 7 (59:23):
My first thought would be how crappy was every other
division to where Jacksonmo was able to find a way
to go eleven and six, To be chip like that
would have been my very first thought. Or how good
was Baltimore and Buffalo? And what did we see from
Miami and what do we see from the Chiefs, and
what do we see from Denver and Los Angeles to
where they almost have gone eleven and six? If you
were left out in the playoff at ten and seven,

(59:44):
Because you're really gonna tell me that, Daniel Jones, Trevor
Lawrence and cam Ward were the reason you were kept
out of the playoff. Like I mean like that would
have been my first comment on the standpoint up, what
is the sazz of the AFC to where you in
the crappiest division over the last five years, still could
not get the job done and guarantee you a first
round bed.

Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
Well, the part.

Speaker 3 (01:00:05):
Of the Texans team that is supposed to be the
constant for them was anything but yesterday, and somebody in
particular is sounding some concern. We'll have that for you
here as we continue on the Morning Drive. It is
the Monday edition. Here Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 15 (01:00:24):
Nice stream Davis talking about Frog baseball, Strike one.

Speaker 4 (01:00:29):
Hey you dummies.

Speaker 3 (01:00:30):
Listen to Astros baseball and Rockets basketball games on any
device with the free iHeart radio apps. We saw some
concerning things, not only from CJ. Stroud yesterday Cole Thompson.
We also saw some concerning things from the defense. Ashton
Genty able to get to them a couple of times,
brock Bauers able to get into the end zone, things

(01:00:53):
that we have not been accustomed to seeing out of
this defense the last few weeks.

Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
And Demiko Ryans.

Speaker 3 (01:00:59):
Of all people, who is he usually hardest on, it
is that side of the ball. And then the post game, well,
Demico was letting it be known that he was not
too pleased with the defensive performance that he saw yesterday.

Speaker 14 (01:01:11):
There's too many explosive plays. I get, that's that's not
what we're about. We got to clean up the communication.
The tackling is not good. That that's not the defensive
performance that we look for, and so we have to
play better.

Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
All right.

Speaker 3 (01:01:25):
So the first part that he mentioned right there, the communication,
I mean a huge part of that is the guy
with the green dot on his helmet disease Alshah here,
he's not out there. So I think that was a
huge part of what you saw yesterday. I mean, you've
had injuries on the back end in the secondary too,
Kaylen Bullock has been really good for you, Jalen Petriot,
the star position has been really good for you, and

(01:01:46):
they were both that yesterday. But I mean the touchdown
run by Jent couple three different times where you had
guys trying to bring him down and you're unable to
do that and he takes off, gets the run, you
get the the swing pass, the backfield there where he's
able to get into the end zone, the wheel route

(01:02:08):
that he's able to get into the end zone on
on the huge catch and run. I mean, just a
lot of different plays that you saw them. And again
we were talking about the concern with CJ. I mean,
with the defense, it's a little bit of are you
getting hit at the wrong time.

Speaker 7 (01:02:21):
With the Yesterday was the very first time that it
felt like, now you have to wonder how much is
the depth of this team and the lack of it
now with the injury stockballing on up is going to
be a factor in the playoffs Because for a while
I hadn't worried about the defensive line. Tommy Togy, I'd
done a good job filling in for Tim Settle. You

(01:02:41):
felt pretty confident on what you saw from at least
the situational awareness that you have. With Miles Bright, you
didn't really want him out there, but at least you
could feel fine that things were kind of working enough
in your favor. Yesterday, for the first time I felt like,
now we have a liability in coverage with twenty seven's
out there. Now we have terrible miscommunication and open field
tackling when it comes to Henry Toatoa when you don't

(01:03:04):
have an as he's Alshier Now. I felt like the
inability to get pressure at the middle that would force
quarterbacks to move outside, which then gave opportunities to Daniil Hunter,
which gave opportunities to Will Anderson they weren't made available.
And you finally saw a run game that had been
very much bottled up throughout most of the year. I
think going into yesterday, there was only one time that
you saw a running back hit over one hundred yards.

Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
And it's James Cook. And you know what, James Cook
is having an All Pro year.

Speaker 7 (01:03:28):
James Cook very much has been the backbone of a
Buffalo team that still is very much in the hunt
for the playoff. Ashton Gens had not had a game
where he was able to average more than four yards
of play since mid October, and you're going up against
a top five run defense, and he looked like he
was just slicing diceon and picking apart the Sextons team.
And I know that we could talk about the fifty

(01:03:49):
one yard run being a major deal, but there also
were several runs on second and short, third and short
to where he was gaining four, he was gaining five.
He was getting to the second level of the defense.
It's concerning. It is, and at this point, it's not
to say that you have to think that this team
needs warf in the offense, because we're still looking at it.

Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
You get to twenty, you feel pretty.

Speaker 7 (01:04:10):
Good about winning a football game, But there are going
to be teams out there that have more explosive offenses,
that have talented running backs, that have better offensive lines,
that can win in the trenches and push your guys
backwards rather than them getting pushed backwards, that give you
the opportunity to get those second and third attempts after contact,
to keep drives alive, and win time possessions and get
in the red zone and put in points.

Speaker 3 (01:04:31):
And I mean the putting up points part of it
has been a little bit of an issue.

Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
I mean, you even touched on it yesterday.

Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
It took you forty five minutes into that game for
you to finally not only reach the red zone but
then also get into the end zone. And well, I
mean you also brought up the positive part of it. Well,
at least you were one for one there in the
red zone, because every other time you weren't able to
sniff the red.

Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
Zone okay at all?

Speaker 7 (01:04:55):
So technically they said that the Texans made it into
the red zone four times yesterday, What like ESPN has
on its list that the Raiders made it to the
red zone on nine attempts and the Texans made it
on four attempts.

Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
Or are they saying plays run inside the red zone? So,
I mean that's got to be what.

Speaker 3 (01:05:13):
It is, because there's no way that they I mean,
we've sended the red zone to like the forty five.

Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Hey, if you get if you get points off of it,
you were in the red zone.

Speaker 3 (01:05:22):
I mean normally they tell you, you know, you're moving the
football between the twenties. But in that case, both offenses
for the most part, were in between the forties.

Speaker 7 (01:05:29):
Yesterday, Oh my bad, I was looking at penalties that
was why. Yeah, but one team was one on one
in the red zone. One team was won to The
Texans went twice. The second time they went was because
of the Nico Collins catch for the twenty pounds game, right,
and then you took a kneel down. So okay, so
you went to the red zone, you were fifty percent.
Look it's like that last drive against Arizona last week,
people were like, well, the Texans didn't score on their
last drive when they had the football, Guys, it was

(01:05:50):
a kneel down, like like like, let's as call it
as this. You were one for one in the red zone.
It took you forty five minutes to get there.

Speaker 3 (01:05:56):
Come on, well, I mean, and you know the part
of it now is looking at this defense is I mean,
you know mentioned what he marks on the offensive side earlier,
is the same deal with as he's als Chaire. I mean,
because you do need to have him out there on
Saturday if you want to have any chance of being
able to win that game.

Speaker 7 (01:06:12):
If I were to ask you right now, who is
the bigger priority for you to have out there on Saturday?

Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Which player would it be? As Shire?

Speaker 7 (01:06:18):
No questions, You're not even remotely close. Like I'm glad
that we're both in the same page on this one
because I think that we saw yesterday just the value
of what he provides for that defense. Omarion Hampton is
not an elite running back, but the fact is is
that he is better than some of the players you've
seen over the last few weeks. He is going to
be able to create opportunities for you, I mean for

(01:06:39):
you to have a headache.

Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
And on the flip side.

Speaker 7 (01:06:42):
From a quarterback standpoint, the two minute offense that we
saw against the Dallas Cowboys for Los Angeles was very
potent to where.

Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
I feel as if you give moments.

Speaker 7 (01:06:51):
Like that justin Herbert, he hasn't impressed me this year,
but in moments he's shown you that he still is
worth the top five pick well.

Speaker 3 (01:06:58):
And I also think that you know with your run game,
it's it's an added bonus, it's not an expectation for you.
Whereas defensively, you know that you can win games because
of your defense, and if you don't have the guys
to the captain of your defense out there, that is very,
very very important. In terms of the calls, the communication,

(01:07:20):
I mean you heard Tamiko Ryans even talk about it
right there.

Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
The communication was an issue.

Speaker 3 (01:07:25):
You can't have that when you get into a game
like you're going to be in on Saturday. You can't
have that when you get into when or your season
is done like the playoffs is.

Speaker 7 (01:07:34):
Speaking of which, do you want to talk about what
we witnessed in Week sixteen around the NFL?

Speaker 3 (01:07:38):
Absolutely, we will do that because it is look at
the shield because like it or not, they're legit and
shots were taken. Also another shot taken a swipe in
this case, and underachievement for a team that we love
to hate. We'll discuss all of those things, says, we
get into the looking at the shield. Here to close

(01:07:59):
out the sun the clock hour on a Monday, it
is the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole Sports.

Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 10 (01:08:06):
Page down built Morning Drive could continues. Now, now here's Cole.

Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
You double dipping' what are you hanging out with WEX again? Well,
please explain what I mean. I'm double dipping'. You're joining
WEX for an hour. Listen.

Speaker 7 (01:08:22):
When people want to take off for the holidays, sometimes
you got to be a team player and step on up.

Speaker 2 (01:08:26):
That's exactly it. Ye're you're a glue guy, that's what
you want.

Speaker 7 (01:08:29):
Very annoyed. I was very tired. I did not get
a good night's sleep the night before. I was nervous
as all well for a football game that had no
inmplanation on my life other than just nineteen dollars coming
out of my bank account that would have gone a
triple E for breakfast and then I told him on Saturday,
my dad made a ten dollars bet that Oklahoma was
gonna win. I was gonna give him the ten bucks on
top of that. So yeah, I mean, besides that, like

(01:08:50):
I was, I was frustrated all day. But some nuns
guests gotta step on up to the plane.

Speaker 2 (01:08:54):
Now, that's just it. That's just it.

Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
So no, you know, they were obviously able to talk
about that. But Mike Burrow coming over from the Pirates
in a three team trade with Pittsburgh and the Tampa
Bay Rays outfielder Jacob Melton and minor league pitcher Anderson
Brido heading to Tampa as part of the deal. And
we'll get into a little bit of astros here in
the eight o'clock hour or two. But we are heavy
Texans today. That is for a good reason. We are

(01:09:19):
heavy college football playoff because of what just happened over
the weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
But the first part of it Texans.

Speaker 3 (01:09:24):
They play in the NFL, So now it's time for
us to take a look at the shield. And yesterday
while the Texans were playing over in RG Stadium, some
of us had our eyes on our phones. Any other
way that we could be able to try to keep

(01:09:46):
an eye on what was happening in Denver, because you
had the Broncos and the Jags playing each other there,
and the Jags able to dominate pretty much from beginning
to end and pick up a huge win. Thirty four
to twenty wasn't even necessarily the storyline of the game.
I mean, yeah, it's an impressive win by Jacksonville, but
then the shots being taken afterwards, because earlier in the week,

(01:10:10):
Sean Payton had you been talking about they're a good
football team all of this, and he threw in something
that Liam Cohen and Jacksonville took us a little bit
of a slight said, you know, for a small market team,
which I don't really understand what that has to do
with anything, you still have fifty three players, and you
are able to spend the same amount of money that
everybody else is when it comes to the salary cap,

(01:10:32):
and you can draft just like everybody else, like you
can build your roster regardless of what your market size
is the NFL more than any other league market size,
and all of that doesn't really matter. So then Liam
Cohen in the post game decides to basically and I'm
paraphrasing here pretty much say, yeah, not bad for a
small market team to come here.

Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
To Mile High and get a win.

Speaker 7 (01:10:52):
So the Rockets lost yesterday, The Texans won yesterday. Yeah,
I went to the bathroom like six times yesterday. Triple
E had a good night's sleep. Dan Matthews took off
last week. Multiple people in the radio industry were fired.
I got to see my niece go meet Santa Claus.

Speaker 2 (01:11:14):
All things that I.

Speaker 7 (01:11:15):
Care about more than Jacksonville finding a way to win
against a fraudulent Denver Broncos team. I will die on
this take. I will go down swinging until the end
of time. Dan Matthews. Jacksonville is still not good. Jacksonville
still is a fraud. Jacksonville still is not going to
be able to do Jack squat in the playoffs. Denver
crap the bed behind an overrated quarterback in BNICKX that

(01:11:37):
had a terrible interception on fourth down. And for some reason,
we're all just gonna pretend that Trevor Lawrence has figured
things out going into week sixteen after five years of
evidence that he is not a good player. Ladies and gentlemen,
if you want to go ahead and hop up of
the Jacksonville's actually a terrible team. Take by all means
you do so, but then you're not welcome back in

(01:11:59):
on the court. Thompson bandwagon of these two teams are
just terrible, and if you face off against them in
the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (01:12:07):
The chickens will come home to roost.

Speaker 7 (01:12:09):
Neither one of them is gonna be playing in the
AFC Championship Game. Neither one of them is gonna be
doing jack squat when it comes to February.

Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
Neither one of them is going to be in the running.

Speaker 7 (01:12:17):
So cool, you beat a big time team and Sean
Payton that was probably due to have a loss. Guys
who also had a loss New England a couple of
weeks ago. Do I have my opinion change on who
they were because of they won last night over Baltimore. No,
So stop me before you say, well, now we got
to pay attention to Jacksonville. The only thing I have
to pay attention to is how piss poor it is
going to be for their fan base when they come

(01:12:39):
to realize we did all this work in the regular season,
going to come up short in January.

Speaker 3 (01:12:44):
Well, and you know it goes even further where Trevon Walker,
who was at one time number one pick overall by
the Jags, on the postgame show for Jacksonville, talking about
the detractors out there. They can stay where they're at.
It's all about us. It's all about the Jags. If
everybody but us, excuse my language, dad, grandma, but if

(01:13:07):
everybody but us, And I mentioned that Liam Cohen had said,
just thankful that a small market team come into a
place like Mile High and get it done.

Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
But then here's the even better part of it.

Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
I always love when people do this where they'll bring
something like that up, which clearly was bulletin board material
for them, and then try to act like, oh, you know,
we weren't really motivated by that. We don't care. We
really don't care about the narrative. I'm sorry to say that,
but it's only helping us. So I want the narrative
to keep coming. Okay, So you do care.

Speaker 7 (01:13:40):
Any single time that people say like okay, like Alabama
tie sense, and everyone's like, oh, everyone wrote us off
for starting nobody.

Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
Wrote you off. Let's start off there, but also nobody
had you in. Nobody had you in get so like,
let's just let's let's just start there. You care about
the outside noise.

Speaker 7 (01:13:54):
Oh we'll let the outside noise effect is clearly if
you're bringing it up in press conferences afterwards, you do
care care about it, So stop pretending like it wasn't
something that was bothering you throughut the work.

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
You know what that is.

Speaker 3 (01:14:04):
That's the person who says I could give zero FS
and it's like, no, no, no, no, you're looking at the wrong way.
You give too much of a care about it. That's
why you're having to say it out loud, because notice
that people who really go through their lives and they
don't give a blank is They just live their lives
that way, and then you ask them about it and.

Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
They're just like, what do I care?

Speaker 7 (01:14:25):
Dude? Quite literally, if you have to say why, well, okay,
I'll go step further. If you have to say why
do I care? You clearly care. I'm sorry. I don't
have a opinion about you either way. I care about
my takes. When it comes to Jacksonville and Denver looking
like cotton dog water like they're not good teams. I
don't believe in them in the playoffs, I'm going to

(01:14:45):
care about how they finish the season because I want
to look right. You care about being a small market
team and undermined in the public eye. But I'll tell
you what, until you win a Lombardi Trophy, I'm not
gonna believe that you could actually do it. This is
the one time that I will say just because if
you haven't done it, doesn't mean you can guess what
Jacksonville until you prove otherwise, I'm not believe you can

(01:15:06):
win a Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (01:15:06):
Well, and then another quick thing here is we only
got time for one more. Dk Metcalf shoving a fan
who was wearing a blue wig there in Detroit yesterday.

Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
He not kicked out of the game, is by question.

Speaker 3 (01:15:19):
Well, and it goes even further because Metcalf left the
locker room without taking questions from reporters after the game,
but the Detroit Free Press caught up with the fan,
who identified himself as Ryan Kennedy from Pinkney, Michigan, said
that he called Metcalf by his full name, Declin's Acarious Metcalf,
prompting the interaction. I called him that, and then he

(01:15:41):
grabbed me and ripped my shirt, Kennedy told the Free Press,
I'm a little shocked, like everyone's talking to me I'm
a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby,
and they didn't do that.

Speaker 7 (01:15:53):
Look, at some point, I understand that there's going to
be public criticism that comes your way. It happens to
all of us in this industry, to anybody in the NFL.
You're getting paid millions of dollars to play a kid's sport,
but you have to keep your composure and that's the
thing that's gonna set you off. Dude, by all means,
you have millions of dollars, talk to somebody, figure out

(01:16:13):
how you're able to did not let this become a
function because let's just say that the NFL did get
involved and they threw you out.

Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
Of the game.

Speaker 7 (01:16:20):
Pittsburgh doesn't win, Pittsburgh now hurts their chances of being
a playoff team. And Pittsburgh puts themselves in a position
to where they're paying a bucketload of money for this
dude to be one of the key weapons and a
factor for their team, and he's now missing the critical
moments of a game that you got to have.

Speaker 2 (01:16:35):
Well remember it too.

Speaker 3 (01:16:36):
DK Metcalf went viral a few years ago when he
had that one kid, the high school kid who was
giving him a hard time about was it Jalen Ramsey
something like that, and then he he says to the
kid in front of his teammates, who are you?

Speaker 2 (01:16:50):
And of course his teammates were like, oh, but he's gonna.

Speaker 7 (01:16:55):
Really dog seventeen year olds to get off, Like, I mean,
come on, man, dude, I mean Michael Geordan, he'd used
it all the time. I mean, he drew a motivation
from a guy just saying hi to him. Look, you
don't know what makes people tick. And by the way, too,
so are you saying that DK back aving Michael Jordona
the same person?

Speaker 3 (01:17:10):
Well, I mean, you know, you just don't know what
makes people go. And Mike Tomlin was asked about in
the post game, said, heard about it. I hadn't seen it,
hadn't had a chance to talk with DK. So I
have no comments. Cool, don't have a comment. But the
NFL will have a fine comment. They will have a
fine for sure coming his way. All right, So we'll
continue with the Texans conversation here. You want to get
in on that seveone three two one two five seven

(01:17:32):
ninety against someone three two one two five seven ninety sloppy,
but maybe needed. We'll let you decide as we get
into the eight o'clock hour here as we continue on
the morning drive with Dan and Cole Sports Talk seven
ninety but let's talk about backup power because these are
things that you absolutely need in your life because we

(01:17:54):
always want to make sure that the power stays on
correct and that always the case. Well, the US Department
of Energy warns that blackout risks in America could increase
as much as one hundred times by the year twenty thirty.
That's because you got plants shutting down, you got massive
new demand. There's AI and data centers that are using
as much power as tens of thousands of homes. Don't

(01:18:15):
have that uncertainty when it comes to not only having
to worry about that, we also know that here in
just a couple of months, we're gonna have a spring
and the storms come along with springtime around these parts.
Then we get in the summer. That's when hurricanes start
to bubble up, and when that happens, you want to
make sure that one once, once one is approaching here
in the area, you want to make sure that the

(01:18:35):
power stays on. And Genpro can help you with that.
G e n pro dot Com. Jenpro dot com is
how you can get in touch with them where you
can get whole home backup energy where most owners are
paying less than two hundred bucks a month to have
that audience backup power coming your way for just one
hundred and seventy nine dollars a month. That's genpro dot Com,

(01:18:57):
Genpro dot Com, g E n p r O dot com.

Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
To get in touch with jen pro.

Speaker 10 (01:19:02):
KDM E Houston, KTDC HD two Houston.

Speaker 1 (01:19:08):
As a Rocket.

Speaker 10 (01:19:11):
Sports Talk seven ninety your home for your home teams
and iHeartRadio station guaranteed you mean.

Speaker 1 (01:19:21):
This is the morning Drive with Dad and Cole.

Speaker 3 (01:19:30):
You get the Chargers in LA. On Saturday, Texas A
and M season comes to an end. Ten for Miami,
three for the Aggies as they lose at Kyle Field
to the Hurricanes, Alabama, Ole, Miss and Oregon all moving
on to the next round. The Rockets losing ot last
night one twenty five, one twenty four to the Kings
in Sacramento seven one, three, two and two five seven

(01:19:52):
ninety is the number two get in Do you almost
feel like of sorts?

Speaker 2 (01:19:57):
A wake up call was.

Speaker 3 (01:19:59):
Needed for the text yesterday and they were able to
get that.

Speaker 2 (01:20:03):
What do you mean by a wake up call?

Speaker 7 (01:20:05):
Because if there's like a difference between losing a game
and that being a reality check that you aren't as
good as you think you are and there is a
winning close but also realizing the injuries to start a
stockpile on up and we had to play perfect because
we cannot give any team an opportunity to be able
to capitalize our mistakes.

Speaker 3 (01:20:21):
You hear coaches say it all the time that it's
easier to teach after a loss than it is after
a win.

Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
I did, it's way easier to teach after a loss.

Speaker 3 (01:20:29):
So I mean you are able to get the win,
but still I think that you probably had a lot
of guys coming off to the field for that one
where they weren't puffing their chest out like they were,
say the week before against Arizona, when you were running
off the field after you beat Buffalo or any of
the other wins that the Texans and be able to get.
This season like this felt like one that had the

(01:20:50):
feelings of a loss because you come out of it
where you were playing against a team with two wins,
and I understand that you know the players in the
locker room. We had the a Dalton Schultz audio earlier
talking about Tomiko tried to tell us this is a
good defense. Don't don't take them lightly. It's not going
to be as easy as you think it's going to be.
And it turned out to be the case.

Speaker 7 (01:21:08):
Yes, But at the same time, and I want to
bring this up from last week because of I nitpicked
and you and I both talked about this on Monday
last week about how we can't always be looking at
the situation of well, you're gonna win, you win by
double digits, you should just be content with, you know,
having a victory in the month of December. But we
talked about last week the explosive plays that were being
allowed by an offense with Arizona that is now sitting

(01:21:31):
at three and twelve, where you had Trade McBride go
off for one one hundred and fourteen yards, he had
Michael Wilson find his way to the end zone and
you got to pick by Kamari Laster, but you nearly
had two touchdowns to the same player for the second
straight week. And once again the explosive plays allowed by
the defense. Because Dimiko brought this up and he's one

(01:21:52):
hundred percent right, far too many explosive. It wasn't just
the sixty yard pass to Ashton Gens. You had the
thirty seven yard game to Jack She had a big
time catch for a gain of fifteen to brock Bowers.
You had a seventeen yard catch by Michael Mahyy. You
had Trey Tucker get a couple of big time plays
for gains of fourteen and fifteen yards. You had the
two runs of over twenty yards downfield, including the fifty

(01:22:14):
yard run. So it's like little things like that are
starting to come unhinged to where it's clear the Texans
have a fault at some point.

Speaker 2 (01:22:22):
And now that we're watching as the dam is.

Speaker 7 (01:22:24):
Going from having a little crack to the water starting
to pile on out to where you're gonna have to
call on and you're gonna have to call on somebody
to kind of fix the dam, to where if they
can't end up getting this problem solved, the cracks are
going to expand even more so to where the floodgates
open on up. And now you put yourself in a
position to where it is a no shot of return
for you to be able to guarantee a win. You're

(01:22:45):
lost in the spot of where this is becoming an
issue where maybe you did need the loss to kind
of wake on up and realize bad execution, bad form,
tackling little things like overshooting a wide receiver on third down.
This is the difference between us getting to the playoffs
and us sitting at.

Speaker 3 (01:23:01):
Home in January, well in terms of being able to
get the win. Tamiko Ryans in the post game saying,
here's the good news. This isn't the college football playoff.
We don't need style points.

Speaker 14 (01:23:12):
And you win no matter how it looks, and you
finished the right way. It doesn't matter. You want to
finish with the win. That's what we did today.

Speaker 2 (01:23:18):
Is first.

Speaker 14 (01:23:19):
I mean, I really got to give credit to the Raiders, right,
this is a really good team, well coached team. Their defense,
they've played outstanding offense. Jen t made some huge plays
on us. Hey got good players. It's like everybody does
around the league. But this team, they're prepared, just like
they were on film all week. We knew this was
going to be a tough one going into this game,

(01:23:41):
and they showed up. They played really with great effort.
They played a great game, and credit to those guys.

Speaker 7 (01:23:46):
Okay, but when you say style points and like just
a fort your way back, I didn't see style points
in the Alabama Oklahoma game. I saw one team being
able to fight back down seventeen to nothing. I didn't
see style points out of Kyle Field. I watched this
one offensive coordinator said let's have a drop you know
what moment with Malachai Toni finding his way to the
end zone and the other one having two turnovers.

Speaker 2 (01:24:07):
Like, I didn't see that.

Speaker 7 (01:24:09):
What I witnessed yesterday was the Texans against a very
bad team that is fighting for the number one overall pick,
playing with its food because of Honestly, at this point,
you've started to realize the faults of your team are
starting to come on up, and it's putting you in
a position to where.

Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
Yeah, you won a football game, but you also.

Speaker 7 (01:24:28):
Showed where are the areas of weakness that teams can
capitalize and now beat you over the next two weeks
to keep you out.

Speaker 2 (01:24:33):
Of the postseason.

Speaker 3 (01:24:33):
Well, I mean you also have to have a desperation
heave too, because I mean, let's talk about even without
the timeouts there, you got a pretty good kicker over
there in Daniel Carlson. Yeah, and you got an offense
that was able to pick up chunk yardage in that
game yesterday.

Speaker 2 (01:24:49):
So you don't complete that pass.

Speaker 3 (01:24:51):
You got a punt it and let's just say that
Tommy Townsend's able to get it to the ten. Okay, fine,
you gotta go fifty yards to be able to set
up for a field goal with about two minutes left
to go and no timeouts.

Speaker 2 (01:25:03):
I get all of that. That's an eternity.

Speaker 3 (01:25:05):
And I mean the way that you mentioned it that
not only Ashton Gent was playing, but what brock Bowers
was able to do. Jack Besh a guy who probably
is more of a tied end but plays receiver and
does it incredibly well. He is a huge body receiver.
And then Mayer as well. Like that's the thing, Like,
you know, you heard what Demiko said about the Raiders overall,

(01:25:27):
Like I'm watching them yesterday and I'm like, they've got
good players, Like it's not like this is going to
be a massive turnaround for them. Like I think that
probably you you're able to hit on this draft. Right here,
you're talking about a team that with maybe Kansas City
going backward, and I mean, we're not so sure about
Denver and la same deal there. I mean, they'll probably

(01:25:47):
have a little bit more of a healthy offensive line
next year. Sure, this is a Raiders team. You make
some of the right moves. It's not like they're far
in a way, like two or three years away from
being a competitive team.

Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
They could be a competitive team next year.

Speaker 7 (01:26:00):
That when you are a guy like Pete Carroll and
what you've done for the NFL, you've deserved to get
a mulligan for next season. I don't know if he
will because of again, this is an organization that constantly
has decided to panic mode and make really bad decisions
when put under durest So I don't know if he'll
be back next year. I won't push back entirely and
say yeah, they can't be a playoff team or a

(01:26:20):
team that we're paying attention to, because they do have
some pieces in play. What I will say is that
you also saw the immaturity and the ineptitude of what
has hurt this team all year come up in critical moments,
especially in that final drive because a play that we
haven't talked about, and you mentioned a giant heave before
the twenty three yard passed down.

Speaker 2 (01:26:38):
Field of Nico Collins.

Speaker 7 (01:26:39):
There was a pass down the sidelines to Nico Collins
for a twenty one yard game that wasn't called. What
happened Porter, a rookie cornerback, got flagged for a pass
interference call at the seven yard line. They gave them
the spot foul twenty one yards later the drive kept
staying alive. So imagine if that play ended updating happening
Dan to where now it is a twenty three to

(01:27:01):
twenty one score and you're not able to convert. They
don't call that play and you're punting from the seven
yard line. And the way this office has been moving,
and the way that we saw Ashton Gens play and
the way that we saw Trey Tucker and Jack Batch
make some place. All it would take was one or
two passes. And you mentioned it, Daniel Carson's a very
good kicker. You get him in a range. Now you're

(01:27:22):
losing twenty four to twenty three, and your offense that
has been pretty docile the entire day is going to
have to drive it eighty yards down the field to
set up Akyami fairbandfield goal at the minimum, if not
trying to get their way into the end zone.

Speaker 2 (01:27:34):
Depending on what happens on the next drive.

Speaker 3 (01:27:36):
And I mean with the Texans, you could play a
little game of this or that, because when it comes
to this part of their team, was it more about
them or was it about what the Raiders were doing.
We'll discuss that as we get even further into the
eight o'clock hour here on a Monday, it is the
morning Drive with Dan and Coles Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:27:54):
Let's suck Christmas Presents.

Speaker 3 (01:27:56):
Let's talk just being able to take care of the
golfer whoever fishes in your life year round. Kobe Stevens
dot com is how you're able to do that. I've
mentioned it that they've got the box store right there,
sixty four to two Luetta Road, right there in spring
Sweet one hundred.

Speaker 2 (01:28:14):
You go and see it right there.

Speaker 3 (01:28:15):
They've got the polos, they've got the T shirts, they've
got the hats, they've got the shorts, the pants, the
ladies and the youth options, the winter time options, all
of those right there at the box store for Kobe
Stevens Apparel. But then Kobe Stevens dot com, you know
you can find it year round and whether it's the
holidays or any time of the year. You know, they've
always got great deals for you right there at Kobe

(01:28:35):
Stephens dot Com for everything that I mentioned. I mean,
we're coming up on I can hear Doug Pike in
my ear right now where I brought up. You know, Yeah,
it's gonna be golf season. He's like, brother, we're in Texas.
It's golf season year round. That's true. I mean, it's
eighty degrees out right now. My god, you can get
out there in shorts and be able to play and
be just fine. And don't forget those really hot temps
are coming up down the roads. So you want to

(01:28:56):
be able to look good, feel good even if you're
sweating or you know, what's off out there on the course.
In Kobe Stevens Apparel can make that happen. It's Kobe
Stevens dot Com, Kobby Stevens dot Com. Co b Y
Stevens with the VS at the end. It's Kobe Stevens
dot Com, Kobe Stevens Apparel.

Speaker 10 (01:29:14):
Dan Matthews, Cole Thompson. This is the Morning Drive with
Dann and Cole.

Speaker 2 (01:29:22):
What do you what do you mean? What do I mean?

Speaker 3 (01:29:25):
People aren't talking about your play calling or the the
defensive play calling or talking about your play calling. Then
you want to say, oh, well that guy was keeping
me from being able to do what I really want
to do on game days.

Speaker 7 (01:29:36):
So you're talking about the now bringing back coach Boom
and firing at peaky Watowski.

Speaker 2 (01:29:40):
Yeah, quick Kowski, but whatever, it doesn't really madness.

Speaker 7 (01:29:43):
But anyway, I'm sorry, I'm sorry you want to you
want to go down this pathway? Uh did you watch
the same secondary that I watched this last year?

Speaker 3 (01:29:50):
It was also to a secondary that was banged up
and injured for much of this Well.

Speaker 7 (01:29:54):
He is the secondary that allowed far too many explosive plays,
especially in a matchup against a four in Florida team
that kept them out of the College Football Playoff. It
was a secondary that struggled on the road in Athens,
Georgia to allot of a twenty five point win. And
I'm not saying that Will Muschamp is gonna come on
in and deliver the hammer and be the.

Speaker 2 (01:30:13):
Difference maker that you're looking for.

Speaker 7 (01:30:14):
But I'll tell you what this secondary was the reason
why Texas was locked out the College football Playoff. We
can talk about the offense insecurities, we can talk about
the ineptitude of the offensive line art struggling early on
in the year. But I have no problem if you're
gonna say, hey, we had got to make a change
because we know what the expectations are.

Speaker 2 (01:30:32):
Down in Austin.

Speaker 7 (01:30:33):
That Pete Kiwatowski, a guy known for producing secondary talent,
for how bad it looked at times, with how much
veteran talent returned by all means, I'm understanding if you
want to go ahead and part ways.

Speaker 2 (01:30:44):
We'll get all that a little bit later on.

Speaker 3 (01:30:46):
But as I mentioned this or that, when it comes
to the Texans, and in this case it's the offensive line,
from what you saw yesterday, did you see more of
just an offensive line just lack of production, lack of
being able to get their blocks blocks on the second level,
whatever it might be, or did you see that it
was the Raiders were like, no, they're actually pretty good upfront.

Speaker 7 (01:31:09):
I saw the same things I have seen from the
Texans offensive line for the last six weeks that I
have spoken about, that I have tried to tell people about,
that I will continuously try to tell people about.

Speaker 2 (01:31:20):
It is a fine unit.

Speaker 7 (01:31:21):
That is good in pass pro It can't run block
to save its bleep in life. It hasn't done it
all year. It hasn't gonna It's not gonna start against
any team like the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders have
some bit of a good defensive front, but it's not
enough to where you can say, oh, it was just
a dominant performances that. No, this is who the outlier
of a forty point game last week was just that

(01:31:43):
it wasn't outlier. This is who the Texans offense truly is.
It's been this way all year. It's specifically been this
way when it comes to run blocking. You haven't been
able to find any continuity when it comes to creating
opportunities upfield. The constant change because of injuries and position
switch up has now come back to bite you. They
are any good run blocking team. They did just enough

(01:32:04):
to keep CJ. Stroud upright. Stroud died a good job
of understanding where the pressure was coming from stepping on
up in the pocket, and then he made some really
air and passes that ultimately led to a lot of
three It outs.

Speaker 3 (01:32:13):
Well, and then you know we talked, you know, touched
on it too a little bit with the run game
where I mean what he marks how much of a
difference does he make.

Speaker 2 (01:32:23):
I mean, in the you know case of yesterday, it
was okay.

Speaker 3 (01:32:27):
It was pretty much what you've been seeing for much
of the season was out of that group, out of
the run game.

Speaker 7 (01:32:33):
So you're saying that the Texans run game was okay yesterday, I.

Speaker 3 (01:32:36):
Mean at least later on it was fine for you.
I mean, it was not great by any stretch of
the imagination, but.

Speaker 7 (01:32:42):
Going to have less than fifteen yards running the football
before the thirty yard game by Nick Chubb in the
fifteen yard game by by what's it?

Speaker 2 (01:32:50):
Jamar Jordan?

Speaker 3 (01:32:51):
Well, I mean, but I mean in terms of what
you were getting even before that and for much of
this season, it's pretty much on par.

Speaker 7 (01:32:59):
Yeah, to an extent, because if this is who you
are as a running unit, and this is what you've
been all season as a running unit because of your
offensive line is terrible in that department.

Speaker 2 (01:33:07):
They just are and they have been for a while.

Speaker 7 (01:33:09):
I mean, we've seen ed Ingram go back to more
so what we envisioned when he was on the Minnesota
Vikings and run blocking. You haven't had a lot of
success with Arianta Ersrie working the outside. You take away
a few explosive runs here and there. This is who
the Texans are running the football because this is who
the Texans offensive line is when it comes to beating
the guys upfront.

Speaker 3 (01:33:29):
So to add instul to injury no pun intended, but
I mean literally is the case the Texans yesterday finding
out that at least according to reports, Auranti Airstrie has
a broken hand, and then we don't know about Trent Brown.
Both guys, by the way, at least Brown was in
the locker room, but it was said by the Texans
media relations department that both guys were unavailable.

Speaker 2 (01:33:52):
Okay, well they're unavailable.

Speaker 7 (01:33:53):
That means one, either that it's because of injury or
two they're getting looked at for a further evaluation. And
it's a big because when it comes to the playoffs.
And I've told you this, I've told everyone this as
much as possible for an offense to really be humming,
like people want to talk about the quarterback play and
the wide receiver play being dynamic. If you cannot protect

(01:34:13):
your guys up front with the five dudes blocking, you
have no shot, like you just don't.

Speaker 2 (01:34:18):
And if you don't believe me, look at the Buffalo Bills.

Speaker 7 (01:34:21):
Buffalo is a team that many people envision because of
the experience of Josh Allen, because of the experience to
Sean McDermott, and the fact that they have been in
the playoffs on a consistent basis, they should be viewed
as a favorite in the AFC. But Josh Allen got
sacked seven times by the Texans defensive front. If that
happens in the playoffs, Josh Allen is well seven times

(01:34:44):
in the second half, five homes. Josh Allen is losing
a playoff game if you can't keep him upright.

Speaker 2 (01:34:50):
And that's just kind of where we are with the
Texans at this point.

Speaker 7 (01:34:53):
You can't run the football now, you have both of
your tackles dealing with injuries and pretty significant ones that
could hurt your team. On top of that, you're now
having to do the constant carousel of the offensive line
where Titus Howard goes from one spot to the other spot.
He may be playing now left tackle because that's the
only place he fits better. Blake Fisher, who's a liability
in pass protection, is going to the other tackle spot,

(01:35:14):
and you're going up against teams that may not be
as potent defensively as what you got with Willy Anderson
to Neil Hunter, but they sure as hell can go
ahead and take a quarterback down on any given play.

Speaker 3 (01:35:23):
Well, I mean, you're gonna be facing a really good
defense in LA on Saturday, who just only gave up
seventeen points to a good Cowboys offense. And I mean
they're also to a team that's trying to fight their
way into the playoffs. Not only fight their way into
the playoffs, but to be able to hold onto that
five spots. I mean, Texan's able to win this game,
and obviously you want to be able to have the

(01:35:45):
better record at the end of the season, or at
least the same with them, because well they've pretty much
gone perfect this season in terms of the tie breakers
that are gonna matter the most. The only one that
could keep them out of being able to be one
of the top teams if they are able to overtake
Jacksonville is that loss to Denver earlier this season.

Speaker 7 (01:36:04):
Los Angeles, Houston, along with the Rams, Lions, and Seahawks
all come in tied for seventh in sacks with forty
one on the year, and this is now a team
that is probably gonna be very limited with.

Speaker 2 (01:36:13):
The the offensive line.

Speaker 7 (01:36:14):
The same thing goes in the opposing side that when
it comes to the Chargers, they are on backup the
offensive tackles. I think they're on like a third string
center at this point. So they've been dealing with players
in the trenches getting hurt. And that's ultimately what I
think we'll keep LA out of a conversation for a
playoff run. But I'll tell you what, man, this is
gonna be a game to where you will truly figure
out how good can Houston's offensive line be in the playoffs,

(01:36:36):
Because if you can't stop the front seven of LA,
you're not gonna be able to stop what you saw
from Buffalo. You're not gonna be able to stop we
saw from New England Denver. I'd even go as far
as say Jacksonville's secondary will be able to create opportunities
for them. They may not win with the passers, but
the covered sacks downfield will help.

Speaker 3 (01:36:52):
You mean to tell me that the Chargers can get
after the quarterback and you don't have both of them,
more than likely not going to have both of your
left and right tackles and even have to have somebody
else play left guard.

Speaker 7 (01:37:04):
So you're asking me, am, I basically talking about what
the Texas could do the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (01:37:08):
No, the other way around, I mean of being able
to keep the Chargers from sacking your quarterback.

Speaker 7 (01:37:13):
Well, I mean either way, it's gonna be a I
think it's gonna be a who's who of who's gonna
be on the on the turf.

Speaker 2 (01:37:18):
More comes Saturday after you kind of a.

Speaker 3 (01:37:21):
Return back to Sofi Stadium. That looks a lot like
the first time you went to Sofi. How many sacks
were giving up in that first game? Do you remember
off the top of your head.

Speaker 2 (01:37:29):
I don't. I'd have to go back and look.

Speaker 7 (01:37:30):
I believe it was for in that game for thirty
seven yards, but the pressure rate was the really big
time deal because of what shared version Kobe Turner. So
you got the same thing kind of going your way
out for Los Angeles.

Speaker 2 (01:37:41):
Goodie, goodie, gum drops. We can look forward to that.

Speaker 3 (01:37:43):
All right, Let's get in a little bit of Astros because,
as I mentioned, they've made a trade.

Speaker 2 (01:37:48):
But what is next? Dana Brown shedding some light on that.

Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
We'll have that for you as we continue here on
the Morning Drive with Dan and Coles Sports talks seven
to ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:37:58):
Well, let's talk back up power.

Speaker 3 (01:37:59):
And when you talk backup power, standby generators from Genprogenpro
dot comgenpro dot com is how you can get in
touch with them seven one three eight four to two
at ninety five oh one is how you get them
on the phone lines again at sebon one three eight
four to two at ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:38:15):
Five oh one.

Speaker 3 (01:38:16):
Now you already know that spring and summer season is
going to produce massive thunderstorms and when that happens, well
the power can go down. Then you gotta worry about
hurricane season two. So that'll be on our radar before
we even know it. So now is the time to
get in touch with gen Pro and make sure that
backup power is a certainty for you. And it can

(01:38:40):
be a certainty for you for just one hundred and
seventy nine dollars a month. Yeah, that's right, backup power
starting at one hundred and seventy nine dollars a month.
Because whole home automatic backup is not a luxury anymore.
Most homeowners can get it less for two hundred bucks
a month. And you want to be able to keep
those Christmas lights on right now? And you want to
also be able to make sure that the lights are

(01:39:00):
on year round. Again, it's jenpro dot com. Jenpro dot
COM's e n p r O dot com. Or give
them a call at SEB one three eight four to
two ninety five oh one. That's semon one three eight
four to two at ninety five oh one to get
in touch with jenpro while the power is still on.

Speaker 15 (01:39:16):
No need for a roadmap, win all roads lead it
as sweet iHeartRadio app, Astros and Rockets games plus legendary
Houston Sports Talk seven ninety on any device with the
free iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (01:39:32):
Now that's the art of living.

Speaker 3 (01:39:37):
But the Astros making said deal. So now you add
another starting rotation arm and somebody who, at least for
I believe, the last four months of the season last
year was a three four five ERA think averaged about
his strikeout per inning in his starts. The only other
thing that I know about Burrows is that he doesn't
go deep into games. Only a couple of times last

(01:39:59):
year that he was a third for his longest outings.
Aside from that, he was mostly in that four innings
to five innings range, which it's all fine and good
in the Astros look, their track record in terms of
being able to unlock things out of guys is pretty impressive.
So that's the other part of it too, that when
I put out the video on Friday, I had said,
why don't we go ahead and let this play out?

(01:40:20):
Because I think we have seen from Dana Brown's talent evaluation,
but also to from the work of Josh Miller and
the pitching staff that they've been able to be able to.

Speaker 2 (01:40:29):
Find some good things out of guys.

Speaker 7 (01:40:31):
Okay, I'm not trying to be rude, so I just
want to preface this by saying be rude.

Speaker 2 (01:40:35):
I don't get a damn go ahead.

Speaker 7 (01:40:37):
Though, because if I do think that you bring up
a good point when it comes to Mike Burrows and
what he provides for the team, I'm not going to
put him in the starting role entirely, just shed it
gives you starting flexibility. He may end up being a reliever,
he may up being a long term guy because you
said he doesn't go along in innings, which is good.
But there are some things I think that you can
like about Mike Burrows. Number One, great fastball, good fastball

(01:40:57):
that sits in the upper nineties, does a good job
being able to have great overall solid placement, solid changeup,
and he has a great slider off speed pitch that
does a good job of dropping at the very last second.
And you bring this up Josh Miller running the show
and what we have known about the Astros and their
ability to develop pitchers, he should be a name that
you can trust for the next several years as a

(01:41:19):
foundation for the long term. Now here's the best part
about the Burrows trade, as the one thing that I
will say is probably the winner of all winners when
it comes to the Ashros getting this deal done. You
have him for six years, he's not hitting free agency
until twenty thirty two, he's not hitting arbitration until twenty
twenty nine.

Speaker 2 (01:41:36):
So basically, he is a.

Speaker 7 (01:41:38):
Bargain bin deal with incredible upside that probably fits in
as a number four, number five, maybe long term reliever
guy that you can now utilize as a piece that
will help you elevate this team's pitching staff. And the
fact is that the Astros do such a good job
of being able to pinpoint what are the faults of
your roster that then puts you in the position to

(01:41:59):
wear Hey, we're seeing the changes we're seeing the good.

Speaker 2 (01:42:03):
We're seeing less the negative.

Speaker 7 (01:42:05):
We are now looking to where this could end up
being a really big time steal for what you gave
on up Anderson Britto what you gave on up with
Jacob Melton. Basically you were deciding, Hey, who do you want?
So that Cord Jacob Melton, Okay, cool, you land a
guy who now helps you reset a lot of things.
That puts you in a better position. I think for
the long haul, even though not twenty.

Speaker 3 (01:42:23):
Twice controllable starter, and I think that if nothing else,
what this deal tells us is that the frontlined controllable
starters that was gonna cost you much more than the
Astros probably even had, or even what they would be
comfortable of giving up. And we'll get to Dana Brown
here in just a second, but I mean, looking at
what you gave up to Tampa Bay. I don't know

(01:42:43):
anything about Anderson Brito single a guy probably gonna be
a double A this year, but if Tampa Bay is
asking about him, then you probably gotta believe, well, then
they see something because their track record is also fantastic.
But then, Jacob Melton, I mean, for all of the
praise that Dana Brown gave him. I think that what
they finally realized after last season is this guy's not

(01:43:04):
going to be a consistent enough bat. And I mean
maybe that signals that they hold on the Jake Myers now.
But at the same time too, I mean that was
something that somebody even brought up to me. They were like,
all right, what was that say about Myers? I was like, well,
that's why you're supposedly trying to trade him right now,
because you want to be able to capitalize on the
season that he just had. But I just I think
that Diana's track record is also too of trading guys

(01:43:28):
away that either you feel like are blocked.

Speaker 2 (01:43:30):
So maybe that means that Bryce.

Speaker 3 (01:43:31):
Matthews is part of another deal or that you feel
like don't really fit into your long term plans. Okay,
I think that with his bat that they looked at
Jacob Melton and said, no, it's not somebody that we're
going to count on for every day at bats.

Speaker 7 (01:43:42):
See, you remember last two years ago when they were complaining,
when fans are complaining about Joey Labrafito, and everyone was saying,
how dare we let a guy that could be such
a factor for us. What has Joey Lubrafido done in Toronto.

Speaker 3 (01:43:53):
For a player he's been, He's been between Buffalo and Toronto,
the entire Will Wagner.

Speaker 2 (01:43:57):
He is now playing in San Francisco.

Speaker 7 (01:43:59):
What about a picture that may or may not ever
make it to the major.

Speaker 2 (01:44:03):
Leagues Jake Bloss And he just he just underwent Tommy Johnson.

Speaker 7 (01:44:06):
So again, the one thing that I will trust when
it comes to Dana for making these deals is he
realizes that there is a ceiling for a lot of
these players. And I look at Jacob Melton, I look
at and I look at Zach Cole, and I look
at number one controllable years and number two potential. Defensively,
I think Zach Cole is a better outfielder than Jacob
Melton from a hitting standpoint. In terms of ops op B,

(01:44:29):
I think Zack Cole is better than Jacob Melton. So
you're looking at a guy who right now is probably
a fifth outfielder here that is going to get starting
reps in centerfield and no longer needs to be in
the minor leagues out in Tampa. So it ends up
being a win win for everybody involved. You get the books,
you get Brandon Llow off the books for for for Tampa,
he goes to Pittsburgh.

Speaker 2 (01:44:50):
I will say, from an astro.

Speaker 7 (01:44:51):
Standpoint, that does suck because you would rather have that
thirty plus power home run home run in the middle
of your lineup. But okay, he's going to Pittsburgh. Now
you get a controllable pitcher who can be a back
end rotation guy that has a lot of intangibles that
you want, and you free up a spot on your
roster to now know that you can make some moves,
whether that be bullpen, whether that be back of catcher,
whether that be maybe bringing.

Speaker 2 (01:45:12):
An a platoon outfielder because of now you have to
make these moves.

Speaker 3 (01:45:16):
He's Stana Brown on MLB Network Radio yesterday. The first
is what we can expect more moves, but what exactly
is the astros focus going to be for said moves.

Speaker 9 (01:45:26):
I'm always in the market the starting pitching if something
balls in my lap. But you know we're gonna shift.
We're gonna shift some of our focus to backup catching
and maybe some bullpen help. That's why we rove five
mu yos in the roof five. He's up to ninety
eight and so we're trying to We're trying to have
some power arms there, all.

Speaker 3 (01:45:43):
Right, So focus on that last part that he just
said right there, because Dana even continues where he was
asked about would you still look at adding another starter
or is it going to be exactly what you just
said right there? Are your focuses for continuing to build
this roster?

Speaker 9 (01:45:59):
Yeah, it's chance that you know, we could continue on
both of those ends, but again it has to make sense.
I mean, we do have, you know, some depth right now.
We feel good about in our bullpen, and so we're
kind of locked in there and that's that's kind of
exciting for us. You know, I'd rather try to lean

(01:46:19):
more towards starting pitching because of the grind of you know,
one sixty two and getting through the season and so,
but we we pretty much feel pretty good about our bullpen,
even though you know, we'll focus and if something you know,
kind of falls in our lap, you know we'll be
locked in and focused on that as well.

Speaker 2 (01:46:39):
A couple of things here.

Speaker 3 (01:46:40):
I've said at numerous times that there is the late
December January surprise from Dana Brown. I think the other
part of it too is that at least in the
immediate It's preservation with wanting to go get another high
leverage arm of being able to make sure that you
don't have to use Josh Hater for the two inning saves,
you don't have to use the four out performances out
of Brian a bray You, and at least for the

(01:47:02):
immediate future. After this season, there's no guarantee you're gonna
have Brian a bray You here. He's gonna command a
lot of money after next season.

Speaker 7 (01:47:09):
Sure, I will say, though right now adding in a
guy like Burrows is not enough for me to believe
this team has done everything possible to better itself going
into twenty twenty six. So, like, if you're an Astros
fan waking up on Christmas morning and you hear of
a deal that gets done, you're related because if this
is the move that we're talking about, as hey, the
big surprise of twenty twenty five, like this is what

(01:47:30):
gets the Astros up the top. We're watching as Wilson
Contreres gets traded to Boston. We're watching as Kevin got
I'm watching as Dylan Ce signs a long term deal
with Toronto. We're hearing rumors that potentially Kyle Tucker could
be going to Toronto now. Apparently the Blue Jays are
in on the Alex Bregman conversation, like all these teams
in the American League that were better than you last
year are doing everything possible to get back and make

(01:47:53):
a run in the playoffs, and you're sitting by and saying, Hey,
we got rid of an outfielder that was no longer
part of our long term plan, and we brought in
a number five starter that may or may not end
up being more than a guy whoever gets over a
three point twenty five.

Speaker 3 (01:48:05):
Right, Well, the Astros are looking for help at least
in the off season, but the Texans are looking for
help here in the regular season. The only problem is
doesn't seem like they're gonna get it. We'll discuss right here. Dave,
see you're right there working in you want to join
him seven one three two on two five, seven ninety
and gets seOne three two on two five seven ninety.
We continue here in the Morning Drive on a Monday
Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 8 (01:48:27):
Back to that and.

Speaker 1 (01:48:28):
Cole as the Morning Drive cruise is on.

Speaker 3 (01:48:34):
Dave on the north Side wants to weigh in. Dave,
good morning, ah again.

Speaker 8 (01:48:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:48:41):
As a matter of fact, I am gonna do that
good Donald Dave? Yeah, Hey Dave, what's going on?

Speaker 8 (01:48:46):
Man?

Speaker 2 (01:48:46):
Sorry, we had a little phone mishap. Go ahead.

Speaker 8 (01:48:49):
It's okay, guys.

Speaker 16 (01:48:50):
You know what I'm You guys know me enough that
I am a winner. Not only I am a winner
in sports, but I am a winner in life. I
win potentially wherever I go in life. So I just
want to get that out there. I just want to
ask a question about Demico Ryans. Is this his third

(01:49:12):
year or his fourth year at being head coach?

Speaker 2 (01:49:14):
Third? Sorry in twenty three?

Speaker 8 (01:49:16):
Third?

Speaker 16 (01:49:17):
Okay, Well, something has to happen for the Texans to
be Super Bowl contenders in the demic O Ryans area.
In the Demico Ryan's era and going into the fourth
year and the fifth year of his tenure as head coach,
this team has to be Super Bowl champions. If they're not,

(01:49:41):
then the tech teams are going to select another head coach.
The NFL is a performance based business. What have you
done with me lately? In the National Football League? So
with this team right here for this year, if C. J.
Stroud doesn't get together and make plays for his football team,

(01:50:04):
I believe that CJ. Styles can make plays with his
legs if he wants to. I don't care about other
people's telling me, well, CJ. Stott is this quarterback or
c J. Strodd is that quarterback. He can't make a
place with his legs that he can't throw with with
with with with bland folders on, hech Man. I think CJ.

(01:50:26):
Stroud is a capable quarterback to to to make plays
down the field and make plays with his legs. And
you already have a lights out Super Bowl cold the defense.
So at the end of the day, it's all about
the players. But which players are going to execute in
the all three phases of the game, offensive, defense, and

(01:50:49):
special team to make this team great?

Speaker 3 (01:50:53):
I appreciate the call, Dave. There is no planet where
Demiko Ryans is not the head coach of the Texans
next season and probably even the one after that, especially
when you start things off the way that the Texans
have been able to start off the early tenure of Demiko.

Speaker 7 (01:51:10):
The Champions of Life. But Jones just said that Demiico
Ryans is gonna be on the hot seat next year.

Speaker 3 (01:51:16):
I'm not sure if on the hot seat, but at
least a chance as I mean, at least, you know,
for the Texans, and I get you know, obviously from
what we've talked about with you know, the team being
able to get to the divisional round but never being
able to move on from the divisional round again, that's

(01:51:36):
the frustration. This fan base is done with division titles.
This fan base is done with playoff wins. They've said,
we've seen both of those things. That's all fine and good,
but we need to be able to get to the
AFC Championship Game.

Speaker 2 (01:51:49):
You haven't ever, You've never done it.

Speaker 7 (01:51:51):
And to be completely fair, Dan, this is like the
first time in my lifetime I can actually say, whether
it be because of just the AFC in general, or
the pathway throughout the postseason, or who is actually viewed
as a contender, that I still think that the Texans
can be a team that punches their ticket to the
AFC title Game.

Speaker 2 (01:52:09):
Like I believe that. But at the same time, you
have to realize.

Speaker 7 (01:52:14):
That there are limitations with this team and that as
a fan base, as a collective unit, you can't settle
for mediocrity. You can't be sitting by and saying, Okay,
twenty three to twenty one win over a Las Vegas
Raiders team that is gunning for the number one overall pick.

Speaker 2 (01:52:30):
It's a win, We'll take it. That's good enough.

Speaker 7 (01:52:33):
That's not the way you're supposed to be acting for
a roster that constantly finds itself winning division titles, that
constantly finds itself winning in the wild card game as
the underdog, that constantly has to face off against the
number one seed against Molly wopped in the next round.

Speaker 2 (01:52:45):
Like, you have to eventually.

Speaker 7 (01:52:47):
Start to realize this is not what we expect from
an organization that has proven it can do the bare
minimum of what are the realistic goals to begin the year.
It's time to put us in that next category. And
so for like the Texans me personally, I said this year,
your goal was to be a playoff bound team, nothing more,
nothing less. Well, expectations have changed. So guess what the

(01:53:09):
expectation now is. You should be able to beat up
on a Jacksonville roster because you've already done it. You
should be able to beat up on a Denver roster
because you don't have c J. Stroud, I mean, because
c J. Straud was not there the first time. You
should be able to handle business against Buffalo and Baltimore
and Pittsburgh and New England's here and scare you. The
only thing that's standing in your way of being a
team that makes a run in the playoffs is you

(01:53:32):
at this point. And unfortunately now we're starting to see
the dam break on open well.

Speaker 3 (01:53:36):
I mean, but at least you know, the comparison that
comes to mind for me with this is, you know,
the Golden State Warriors thought that Mark Jackson only took
him as far as they could get him, So then
they went out and got Steve Kerr, and clearly it
worked out, and you made other moves too, But it's
not like there's a Steve Kerr out there for you
to be able to say, you know what, that's the
guy that gets this team over the hump. I mean,

(01:53:57):
I think that you trust that Damiko Ryans has got
the organization heading in the direction to be able to
finally break through and get there.

Speaker 7 (01:54:03):
Sure, but at the same time, what I'm looking at
is what more is it going to take for finally
everything to be on the same page. Is it the
offensive personnel, is it the defense personnel? What is it
that's missing? Once again to where we're looking back come
twenty twenty six and saying, oh, look at that.

Speaker 2 (01:54:17):
They were good, but they stuck him up short.

Speaker 3 (01:54:19):
As per usual, Texan's still looking for that help. We'll
get into that as we get into the nine o'clock cover.
I obviously wanted to get you in on the phone lines.
We're a customer service business here, so that's what we do.
So sometimes we will take a step to be able
to let you jump in. So we're gonna do that again,
coming up with John Terry. See you guys right there,
a couple of other spots open. You want to hop
a board seven one three two and two five seven

(01:54:41):
ninety against seveone three two one two five seven ninety.
Will continue here. It is the Morning Drive with Dan
and Coles Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 15 (01:54:49):
Kb E Houston ATVHD two Houston.

Speaker 10 (01:54:52):
The Astross, the Rockets, Rockets Basketball, your home for your
home teams. This is Sports Talk seven ninety and iHeartRadio
station Guaranteed Human. This is the Morning Drive with Dan and.

Speaker 3 (01:55:12):
Cole Alabama, Ole Miss and Oregon able to join the
Canes in the next round and the Rockets losing OT
one twenty five, one twenty four to the Kings in
Sacramento seven one three two one two five seven ninety
is the number two get in obviously, the Texans at

(01:55:33):
ten and five. Now the only problem is Jacksonville is
eleven and four and they currently have that lead on you,
and now they have two games left against the Colts
and the Titans. I mean, we were really counting on
yesterday to be able to have that win, uh for
Denver to be able to continue their streak and beat Jacksonville.

Speaker 2 (01:55:55):
But that's to no avail. So now help us, Philip Rivers.

Speaker 7 (01:56:00):
Howard, Philip River, you mean next week when they face
off against chos oh Okay. At this point, Dan, I'm
gonna be completely honest. I do not believe in the
Jaguars as a playoff team. I do not think that
they will make any noise in the postseason. You put
them in a position to where all the pressures on
sixteen to deliver.

Speaker 2 (01:56:16):
I get it.

Speaker 7 (01:56:17):
I know what his last four games have said, fourteen touchdowns,
zero turnovers. But don't kids yourself, this is still Sunshine
that has a dark and gloomy day whenever the pressures
put on him.

Speaker 2 (01:56:28):
We're gonna see in the playoffs.

Speaker 7 (01:56:30):
But I'm gonna say the part that people don't want
to hear in the city.

Speaker 2 (01:56:34):
I think Jacksonville's gonna win the division. I think it's
gonna happen.

Speaker 7 (01:56:38):
I don't think they're gonna lose to Philip Rivers, and
therefore they would get the twelve wins you would then
need to win on out. I'm very nervous about the
Sexton team going into next week.

Speaker 3 (01:56:47):
Well, then he'd have that Tennessee Titans game, where I
guess at that point it's hey, let's go cam Ward,
Let's go everybody.

Speaker 7 (01:56:54):
Wow, cam Ward looked awesome yesterday against a third string
Kansas City team. Apparently now he is the second coming
of Warren moon Out in Nashville, So good for him.

Speaker 3 (01:57:02):
I guess, boy, things just falling off a cliff in
a hurry for Kansas City. Seven one three, two, one
two five seven ninety is the way to get in.

Speaker 2 (01:57:10):
Terry calling us from Ohio. Good morning, Terry, very.

Speaker 17 (01:57:15):
Good morning, guys. What's up in Houston when there? Okay,
I'm a big Texas fan, I'm a real big Eagles fan.
I like saying both in the super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (01:57:30):
It would be nice.

Speaker 16 (01:57:31):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:57:32):
Just the only problem is it seems like both of
them offensively might be a little bit challenged, But what
what encourages about this team right now?

Speaker 2 (01:57:39):
Terry?

Speaker 17 (01:57:42):
Their defense?

Speaker 3 (01:57:44):
All right now, I mean, and it was a little
rough yesterday, but then obviously I mean c J. Stroud
having a little bit of a rough performance. Terry, appreciate
the call. We got some others that want to be
able to jump in.

Speaker 2 (01:57:55):
But I mean the defense inspires you.

Speaker 7 (01:57:58):
A defense that over the last two games has given
up over twenty points to two underwhelming offenses.

Speaker 3 (01:58:03):
See, and that's so, I mean the third time this
season that you've given up over twenty points and you
won the game. So, I mean three of your seven
wins have come that way. So what does it tell
you that the overwhelming trend is that if they give
up over twenty you're in trouble. But we have said
that the good news is you score above twenty. Yeah,
you get you get that twenty magic number right there,

(01:58:23):
you win the game. Then yesterday you had twenty three,
they had twenty one.

Speaker 7 (01:58:25):
Look, I'm not going to sit here and act like
the Texans defense has completely fallen off a cliff, but
you are starting to worry about the explosives, Max, I
mean Trey McBride a few weeks ago, Michael Wilson a
few weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (01:58:36):
Then you throw in the big play, Jack Besch.

Speaker 7 (01:58:38):
You to think of the sixty yard touchdown to Ashton
genty fifty one yards score to Ashton genty two, big
third don conversions by Gino Smith, who had been a liability,
throwing turnover after turnover after turnover. I mean, you saw
more turnovers than in the bakery in New York on
a Monday morning.

Speaker 2 (01:58:52):
But like that's what I'm saying, Like it's stuff.

Speaker 7 (01:58:53):
Like that that just drives me crazy. Is that, Yes,
the Texans are a great defense, but now we're starting
to see the area that have been a strength becoming
a question mark. Then now let's putting more pressure on
your office to have to deliver because let's just call
it a space of spade. Dude, if the season were
to end today, seeing what we have seen so far
from this defense, allowing the explosives, you may ask CJ.

(01:59:14):
Stott in this offense to have to get that big
gotta have moment? Do you trust them to get that?

Speaker 2 (01:59:17):
I got to have moment?

Speaker 3 (01:59:19):
Time will tell someone three two one, two five seven
ninety is the way to get in northwest Side.

Speaker 2 (01:59:24):
John, Good morning, Hey Dan Cole.

Speaker 18 (01:59:28):
Listen, man, you know our offensive line it has not
been great all season. I mean yesterday they had their
moments where they played well, and they had them moments
where you know, they just could not could not stop
the pass rush.

Speaker 8 (01:59:43):
You know that was really rough.

Speaker 9 (01:59:44):
And now you tell me that ersiye.

Speaker 18 (01:59:47):
Has a broken hand. Yep, our two tackles, Oh my god, listen,
our offensive line wasn't great. We in a whole lot
of trouble now, Nick Nick Nick Kate is gonna have
to come up with something him into Miko Ryance because
of course we know the Chargers is gonna hear about
this too.

Speaker 8 (02:00:06):
The offense.

Speaker 18 (02:00:07):
Oh wow, man, let me ask.

Speaker 16 (02:00:09):
You, is this a time where you think that they
may bring Barrios and.

Speaker 18 (02:00:16):
Kirk out there, because we know Burrios is pretty quick,
but that you know the officers, they're gonna have to
go a lot faster now.

Speaker 9 (02:00:23):
Then receivers are gonna have to get.

Speaker 18 (02:00:25):
It because I don't know how they're gonna hold up
with two tackles hurt. Many people think we was in
trouble yesterday. Were in trouble now because the offensive line
in the trenches, that's everything. The offensive line don't hold
up Strout, don't have no time to throw the ball,
none of this stuff. Man, So what do you think
you think they might bring Burials and Kirk at the

(02:00:47):
same time. That's different, except Burials is fast.

Speaker 9 (02:00:50):
No, I do not.

Speaker 7 (02:00:51):
I do not think that you will see Burials in
the Texans uniform, at least on the active roster for
the rest of the season, if ever again because of
what we have not at this point. The one thing
I will say with John though, is right you thought
you were in trouble yesterday when it came to stopping
the run and not being able to have any momentum
on the ground, losing two of your offensive tackles, even
if it's for a game against a team that quietly

(02:01:12):
has won seven of its last eight and played better
offensively than we're given credit for. They've been a top
ten offense over the last seven games. That worries me
a little bit going into Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (02:01:23):
Someone three two and two, five seven ninety is the
way to get in and Braxon Barrios when he lost
what he was brought here to do, which is the
return game to Jalen Nole, then he pretty much lost
his role. I mean, that's that's why you're seeing him
be inactive every single week, because I mean, let's be
honest here, don't you think that most Texans fans yesterday
with Christian Kirk were almost like I forgot he was

(02:01:44):
still here?

Speaker 7 (02:01:45):
Yeah, I mean I wouldn't, dude, going into his last
three games, do you know how many catches he had
like one?

Speaker 2 (02:01:51):
How many yards? Like five?

Speaker 7 (02:01:53):
Three?

Speaker 2 (02:01:55):
I was in the neighborhood at least, I know, Just
like that's like, that's where we have seen shit.

Speaker 7 (02:02:00):
Kirk kind of gone from being a hey remember when
he was supposed to be that big time acquisition to oh,
he's still on the team.

Speaker 3 (02:02:05):
Well, remember me and you did the video yesterday during
the half and I was like, you know, you're getting
out gained by Las Vegas, who doesn't do that very often.
And oh, by the way, one of your leading receivers
is Christian Kirk. So that kind of tells you how
things are going offensively for you today.

Speaker 2 (02:02:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (02:02:20):
I mean, also, you didn't have really any bit of
success outside of one touchdown pass adult and shall who
I also want to give a lot of credit to.
He has quietly been one of the most underappreciated players
over the last five years of Texans history. Just broke
the franchise record for the most receiving of receptions in
a single season by a tight end, passing Owen Daniels
in two thousand and eight, and then a couple of

(02:02:42):
big time plays downfield to Neil Collins.

Speaker 2 (02:02:44):
Gary Ray.

Speaker 3 (02:02:44):
Want to give you guys an opportunity to hop in,
So we're gonna do that. You want to join them?
Someone three two on two five seven ninety can it's
subone three two one two five seven ninety. We also
will with Sean Garaja coming up to join us here
at the bottom of the hour. I do want to
get back into the football discussion because is it a
failure for Mike Elko's at club for the way that

(02:03:06):
the season ended. We will discuss all of that as
we continue here on The Morning Drive with Dan and
Cole Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 10 (02:03:13):
The Morning Drive with Dann and Cole on Sports Talk
seven ninety, home of the Strolls, Rockets and Houston's best
sports talk.

Speaker 3 (02:03:24):
Colin Derek Stingley Junior, as somebody brought up to him
the baseball example, maybe would you say that he's the
sho heo tani and he he was going with all
of those yesterday. So Petre's got some personality to him too.

Speaker 2 (02:03:35):
Yes, all right, you've brought me around. I'll go with
the defensive backs. They would a had him for the
next thirty minutes.

Speaker 7 (02:03:40):
Figure out what we call the Christmas Album for the
Houston Texans defense backfield.

Speaker 3 (02:03:45):
Umm, yeah, we'll figure that out. It's gonna be a
working title. But you get the Texans winning yesterday twenty three,
twenty one over the Raiders. They've won seventh straight, so
that's good. It's just not as good to only beat
the Raiders by two points, but they do that. Rockets
lose last night in overtime one twenty five four. Astros
make a trade on Friday. Mike Burrow's coming their way

(02:04:06):
right in a picture from the Pirates three team deal
that sends Jacob Melton in minor league pitcher Anderson Brito
to the Tampa Bay Rays. Someone three two and two
five seven ninety is the way to get in on
the phone lines.

Speaker 2 (02:04:19):
Gary and Spring good morning, Gary, Hey.

Speaker 9 (02:04:23):
Good morning guys.

Speaker 11 (02:04:24):
Hear me okay perfectly, okay, Yeah, I'm gonna I'm glad
I'm coming on before your next caller because he's basically
one of the topics I'm calling about. I'm about as
uh mainstream a fan as you can have for the Texans.
So I'm sure you guys have heard the phrase poppycock

(02:04:44):
if not poppycock bs, I'm calling you out on what
you said earlier on that because I'm all for of
the Texans making the playoffs. I'm all for of the
Texans winning the first game of the playoffs. Sure, we
want him to go further. Who what who doesn't They
won seven out of the last nine games, and you
did allude to that just a second ago, and you

(02:05:06):
you said that another team, I think the one they
play is one seven.

Speaker 2 (02:05:10):
Out of eight. Yeah, I'm Saturday the Chargers.

Speaker 11 (02:05:13):
So anyway, uh, I don't believe any of that stuff.
You know, I'm all for them, and i know they're
not playing good, they're falling in everything. But the fan base,
you know, it might be a lot of callers, but
but the majority of the fan base does not believe
all that stuff about not making the playoffs and not
winning the first game. We want them to go further,

(02:05:35):
but we're all far of them winning. So let's give
them a little bit of respect. I'm gonna have to
turn the radio off to listen to this next guy, Gary.

Speaker 2 (02:05:44):
Gary Gary Care.

Speaker 9 (02:05:46):
Guys are great.

Speaker 11 (02:05:47):
I'm smarter than I am, and I appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (02:05:49):
Garry Ire. You just gonna ask if you hang up,
don't hang up, don't hang up, don't hang up? Or
do you hang up? Are you okay with mediocrity? Like
I'm sorry, that's what this comes down to.

Speaker 7 (02:06:00):
Team that can say, over the last three years has
gotten three straight ten win seasons.

Speaker 2 (02:06:05):
You hear CJ.

Speaker 7 (02:06:06):
Strout talk about it in the locker room. You here
to meet a Ryance talking about in the locker room. Yeah,
that's great. It's good that we have expectations here. Don't
you want to feel like that at some point you've
taken that next jump forward that you do feel like
ten and seven should just be the new norm rather
than just.

Speaker 2 (02:06:22):
Oh cool, we're so happy with this being our overall reason,
like oh yay, a win's a win? Hippi do it's
like what are we doing here?

Speaker 7 (02:06:30):
Like you want to if you want to show that
you are one of these teams that can actually be
viewed as a viable threat, you handle business against them.

Speaker 2 (02:06:39):
Like, I'll be completely real, Dan, who is the team.

Speaker 7 (02:06:41):
That I have been talking about the most going into
the playoffs that I would fear if I was the Texans.

Speaker 2 (02:06:47):
In the AFC. They beat them and they got eight
sacks against the quarterback. Oh, Buffalo.

Speaker 7 (02:06:53):
I lost respect for Buffalo yesterday because if you won
by three against a terrible Cleveland Brown's Oh.

Speaker 2 (02:07:00):
This is also though.

Speaker 3 (02:07:01):
I mean, Jacksonville is another team that's you know right
now is in front of you in the AFC South.
But they had to go to overtime and kick a
field goal to beat Arizona a few weeks ago. So
you don't apologize for the wins. The wins some of
them are better than others. We'll give you that. But
two at the same time, I mean, I think kind
of to the point that you know Gary's bringing up

(02:07:23):
right there, I mean, I'm with you. I got to
push back on it because what does Damiko Ryans talk
about all the time, The standard, the standard, the standard. Well, okay,
we'll find the standard here is to win the AFC
South and get to the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (02:07:35):
Get above the standard. That's the whole thing.

Speaker 3 (02:07:37):
Like raise your expectations at a certain point, and I
think that everybody in the locker room feels that way
because I mean, remember, I go back to what Will
Anderson Junior said last year after they lost to the Chiefs,
when they were doing the locker clean out, he said,
We've got to find a way to get that game here. Like,
that's that's what our next that's what our next goal
is is to not only win the division, but then
be one of the top two teams and be able

(02:07:59):
to hosts the divisional round.

Speaker 2 (02:08:01):
Here, like, let's you gotta do next.

Speaker 7 (02:08:03):
Let's just call it as is, Dan, the expectation for
the Texans is to host a playoff game every single year,
right because that means you're winning the division right now.
You're not hosting a playoff game right now. You are
barely in the playoff conversation. Despite being one of the
hottest teams to close out twenty twenty five. You could
go on a nine game win streak, win nine of
your last eleven, and honestly, it should have been ten

(02:08:24):
of your last eleven, because if CJ doesn't get hurt
against Denver, you probably do win that game.

Speaker 2 (02:08:29):
And yet still what do you show for it on
the road.

Speaker 7 (02:08:32):
Facing off against Pittsburgh on the road, facing off against
Jacksonville on the road, facing off against dember or on
the road, facing off against New England, Like, is that
really what your goal was at the start of the year. No,
your goal is to be the team that is supposed
to be consistently hosting playoff matchups, and not just the
Saturday game that shows up on ESPN, because if it's
the snooze fest.

Speaker 3 (02:08:53):
Well, and I mean the Texans currently right now being
in the seventh spot, they would be taking on New
England in that first game. And me and you have
talked about it at nauseum almost that you believe in
the Texans one hundred percent more than you believe in
the Patriots.

Speaker 7 (02:09:05):
And I still do. I mean, trust me, New England
finding a way to come back last night was very impressive,
and I do think there is reason to start thinking
if they play on their p's and q's, guess what's
gonna happen. They're going to win against the Texans. But
I don't fear them as a playoff team for one
major reason. You haven't been here before. You haven't experienced

(02:09:26):
this before. Buffalo has Los Angeles has Pittsburgh, has Houston,
has Denver, even has an experience, does play a role
for eighteen when it comes to being in critical moments
and drives that are necessary to guarantee that you can
advance to the next round. And I just don't think
that's gonna happen for New England. They may get a

(02:09:47):
win in the playoffs, I just don't see them going
to the super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (02:09:50):
Someone three two and two, five seven ninety the way
to get in. Ray wants to weigh in.

Speaker 2 (02:09:54):
Good morning Ray, Good morning Gary.

Speaker 19 (02:09:59):
I went to listen very careful of Gary.

Speaker 8 (02:10:02):
You're a loser.

Speaker 20 (02:10:03):
You're a loser fan.

Speaker 19 (02:10:05):
And Gary, you didn't hear them booing the heck out
of us yesterday in the stadium.

Speaker 16 (02:10:12):
You didn't hear them booing.

Speaker 19 (02:10:14):
Those are real diehard fans, Gary, that are gonna boo
you if you don't have offense to go against the Raiders.

Speaker 16 (02:10:22):
You're the type of fan.

Speaker 19 (02:10:23):
Gary, when we get dominated in New England in the
first round thirty four to ten, you're gonna be like, oh,
it was a good season.

Speaker 2 (02:10:31):
No, Gary, you're a loser and you.

Speaker 19 (02:10:33):
Need to get on this team and be mad at
them as a die hard fan sitting there with sitting
on your hands. I don't like being in the stadium
next guys like you. I really don't.

Speaker 8 (02:10:43):
Gary.

Speaker 16 (02:10:43):
I think we're gonna.

Speaker 19 (02:10:44):
Lose in the first round because this offense shizz ucks.

Speaker 2 (02:10:48):
It sucks.

Speaker 19 (02:10:49):
We couldn't even score until the fourth quarter against the Raiders.

Speaker 9 (02:10:54):
Dude, Cole, I don't want to.

Speaker 2 (02:10:56):
Mention some Cole.

Speaker 11 (02:10:57):
We gotta stop thinking about Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 19 (02:11:00):
When Trevor was doing.

Speaker 11 (02:11:01):
Bad, we say, oh, he's making fifty five be better.

Speaker 19 (02:11:05):
When he took over the division, we said, we don't
believe in it.

Speaker 11 (02:11:08):
We gotta get a guy's created, he's earned his money.

Speaker 19 (02:11:10):
He's earning his money, and right now he can beat
the Texans because CJ Ken match him in touch Donaldson.
TJ can't go up and down the field with Trevor
right now. And that's a crude Gary.

Speaker 2 (02:11:22):
Bye, Gary, I appreciate it, right, call her, call her
on caller, crume. No, I'm fine with that. I want
the holiday season. Where's the spirit?

Speaker 7 (02:11:30):
The spirit is that the Texan should have more expectations
than going ten and seven and being a one and
done in the playoffs. I'm sorry, Like I agree with
Raight now, Ray, I'm gonna push back.

Speaker 2 (02:11:38):
Real fast, Bud.

Speaker 7 (02:11:39):
I'm not gonna believe in Trevor Lawrence until he proves
me otherwise it's never gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (02:11:43):
I just it won't.

Speaker 7 (02:11:44):
I don't get what the numbers say. It's the same
thing I said about Denver. I don't believe. I refuse
to believe. But I will give credit recreds due in
terms of you beat a team that I didn't believe in.
So I guess that that means something.

Speaker 2 (02:11:56):
Walk with me on this one. I'll listen.

Speaker 3 (02:11:58):
Party line, Gary and Ray like almost turned this into
the Fine Bomb Show for a little bit.

Speaker 7 (02:12:05):
Oh, I'd let them go toe to toe with each
other by all means said two phone lines, don't.

Speaker 2 (02:12:09):
We Yeah, we do.

Speaker 3 (02:12:10):
We have two phone lines, and I'm sure we could
find a way to be able to make it work.
But I mean that's one of those two.

Speaker 12 (02:12:14):
You know.

Speaker 3 (02:12:15):
Gary threw his shot and Ray through his. I'm backed
away from the microphone. I was like, hey, hey, hey, hey,
I got no beef, guys.

Speaker 2 (02:12:21):
This is all you. It's not that okay.

Speaker 3 (02:12:23):
It's not much a hockey referee where they tell everybody, hey, hey, hey,
hey hey, let's let the boys go.

Speaker 2 (02:12:27):
Let them, let them, let them do it. Listen.

Speaker 7 (02:12:29):
I'm not saying that either one is wrong here. What
I'm saying is is that let's just be real. It's
year three with the same story every single time that
we take the feel it is a bad offensive execution,
it is a great defensive performance. It is things that
are shooting yourself in the foot that are keeping you
out of the playoff conversation as a legitimate threat to
go to the Super Bowl for the first time in

(02:12:49):
franchise history, and this year where you may end up
going twelve and five, it still feels like it's not enough,
and that is the infuriating part, all.

Speaker 3 (02:12:57):
Right, speaking of the playoff, at least it's the college
foot ball variety of it. And the man who's all
over at Shahan Giraja from CBS Sports, he is going
to hop on with us, so we'll get with him,
and then also to work you in on the phone
lines too, if you want to get in SE one
three two one two five seven ninety against SEB one
three two one two five seven ninety. It's the morning
Drive with Dan and Cole Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 15 (02:13:20):
Hey, yoh, listen to Sports Talk seven ninety on any
device with our free iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (02:13:29):
It's free. Like a punch to that face.

Speaker 3 (02:13:35):
We're talking some college football playoffs because well, a man
that's been all over it is gonna be the guys
hopping on with us right now.

Speaker 2 (02:13:41):
Sjahan.

Speaker 7 (02:13:41):
J Ed Roger from CBS Sports joins us live here
on the Morning Drive, and Shahan, I'm just gonna ask
you point blank, what was more infuriating if you are
a Texas A and m fan Johnny Manziel not showing
up for the pickham or the offense not showing up
at all during the four quarters of action against the
Miami team.

Speaker 2 (02:13:59):
Well that you got a.

Speaker 21 (02:14:00):
Pretty good substitute in Alice Caruso showing up.

Speaker 8 (02:14:03):
Hell yeah, he was great.

Speaker 21 (02:14:05):
He was great Chicago Bulls legends, as everybody knows. But
you know, I think that the way that the offense
played was just astonishing, to be honest, And I mean
in the first half, obviously they moved the ball at
a high level, like they were able to get down
the field. I thought that Marcel Reid played pretty well,
but they almost collapsed in themselves and they just weren't
able to get it into the end zone. Obviously they had,

(02:14:27):
you know, the the fumble in the on the edge
of the red zone in the first half, they have
the blocked field goal, Like.

Speaker 4 (02:14:33):
It was just a comedy of errors in so many ways.

Speaker 21 (02:14:36):
And for TEXA and M who obviously has had a
very potent offense all year, that had to all Americans
that wide receiver to not be able to put up
any touchdowns against Miami defense, that's good, but certainly not
you know, the cream of the crop.

Speaker 4 (02:14:50):
I think that was very, very frustrating.

Speaker 3 (02:14:53):
Sean, they lose to Texas and then they lose this
last game here on Saturday. If you are either an
A and M fan or not an A and M fan,
do you look at the season as being a failure
with the way that these last two games ended.

Speaker 21 (02:15:08):
No, but they they came as close as you can
possibly go to winning eleven games and making the playoff
and the season being close to that. But I mean,
I think we do have to have some perspective on
text A and M, right, I mean, this is a
program that hasn't won ten games since twenty twelve. They
haven't won eleven games in a row since nineteen ninety four. Like,

(02:15:29):
there were a lot of historic things done this season.
People will point to the schedule, and there's some truth
to it, right, but like they also went on the
road and beat a really good Notre Dame team. They
also got to host a college football playoff game at
Kyle Field.

Speaker 4 (02:15:41):
They've ever even been in the playoff before.

Speaker 21 (02:15:43):
So I mean the way that it ended, Like you said,
the specific two games that it ends with, I think
like you can't write those away, certainly, but I think
that this was a season that will go down in
tex A and m history. I think that, you know, again,
the first team in thirty years to win eleven regular
season games, Like this stuff matters, and while certainly everybody

(02:16:07):
hopes that this is not the peak, I think that
this was a great setup, especially when you consider that
this is only year two for Mike Elco.

Speaker 7 (02:16:13):
Sean, you know this as well as I do, Man,
and it's frustrating because of the world of college football
is all about who can we do? What have you
done for me lately? You're not in the playoff without
Marcel Reid. He was the backbone of this team. That
allows you to get into the conversation for an eleven
one season begin with, But for multi interception games over
his last six appearances. Two horrendous turnovers against Texas, two

(02:16:38):
inexcusable turnovers against Miami in the playoff, one in the
end zone that ultimately costs you win. There's gonna be
a lot of people that say, we're paying a ton
of money for us to be considered a playoff team,
We're paying a ton of money for us to play
players in the transfer portal. Is there gonna be an
awkward conversation with Mike Elko now with the new offensive
coordinator at Holman Wiggins, that Hey, Marcel Reid, good, but

(02:17:01):
we may have to go turn the corner because of
we expect to be in the national championship conversation year
in and year out.

Speaker 4 (02:17:07):
So I'll say two things to that.

Speaker 21 (02:17:09):
One, I thought that it was a really bold risk
to stick with Marcel Reid and try to build up
the talent around him over last offseason. I don't think
that a lot of coaching staffs would have tried to
do that. But instead of just replacing the quarterback, they
went out and they got receivers that were incredible in
Marrio Kraber and Casey Conception.

Speaker 4 (02:17:29):
They continued to build up the offensive line.

Speaker 21 (02:17:31):
So like, I actually think that that was a decision
and a decision that very much paid off for them,
even with the way that things ended. The other thing
that I'll say is that, look, here's what you have
to kind of dig into, is all right, so you
make the decision to move on from Marcel Reid, Well,
who are you getting and what's the opportunity cost of that?
Because if you look at this quarterback transfer bortal market, it's.

Speaker 4 (02:17:53):
Not elite, right, Like, I mean, I think that even
if you look at last.

Speaker 21 (02:17:57):
Year's market, the guys who ended up getting very very
top dollar, Like there's a Darien Mensa who obviously had.

Speaker 4 (02:18:02):
A good year, but Duke still went eight and five.

Speaker 21 (02:18:05):
John Mattier, you know, it's kind of the same deal
that we're talking about with Marcel Reid right now, right
and he was a four million dollar quarterback. So there
isn't necessarily better out there that's just going to magically
fix everything.

Speaker 4 (02:18:18):
Now.

Speaker 21 (02:18:18):
I did turn to I did text one of my
A M friends kind of like two drives into the game,
and I'm like, Oh, we're getting bad footwork Marcel Reaid
today and that just has to change, right like that,
that has to get better. But I mean the leap
that he made from his red shirt freshman year to
his red shirt sophomore year was huge. And also I
think his dual threat ability was so critical to this

(02:18:41):
team having a chance to be in contention for the
college football playoffs. So I wouldn't overreact and try to
move on from him, but certainly you need to sit
him down and say, dude, like you have to get
more consistent, You have to work on your footwork.

Speaker 4 (02:18:56):
You can't lose your head in some of these big moments.

Speaker 3 (02:19:00):
Again, CBS Sports hopping on with us here for a
few minutes on the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole Sean.
You know, probably it up with Peter Burns. We had
him on earlier in the show. And I mean, you
look at this aggie offensive line, Trey Zoon, he's gone,
a few other guys gone, and on the defensive side too.
There's not going to be cash as how anymore for you.

(02:19:21):
So I mean, are we kind of looking at a
situation with A and M where this might have been
one of their best chances or do you think we
expect them back in this situation to get next year?

Speaker 21 (02:19:31):
Well, this is where I think we learn a lot
about text A and them and the program that they've
built under Mike Elka, because this is the moment where
a lot of those young players that you recruited two
years ago should be popping up. And you know, I
think that we've seen them first stretches on the defensive line.
Obviously at receiver, they're still going to be stacked with
some of the guys that they have coming back, you know,

(02:19:52):
offensive line is kind of that big question mark is
probably my biggest question mark on the team in twenty
twenty six.

Speaker 4 (02:19:58):
But again, I mean, I think that tech A and
m has done a really good job over the past
couple of years.

Speaker 21 (02:20:02):
I mean, guys, you know, guys like Trey Zoon or
armaj Reid Adams were not the level of players that
they were before Mike Elko's staff came in.

Speaker 4 (02:20:10):
So I think that that's the big question mark.

Speaker 21 (02:20:13):
But but no, I certainly don't think that this is
you know, the one chance that they got, or the
peak of the era or anything like that. I think
though that that at the same time, like you're gonna
have to find your next right pass rusher and and
we didn't know this time last year that it was
going to be Casher's howell because you.

Speaker 4 (02:20:29):
Know you were losing you know, Shamar Turner and and
all these guys to the NFL.

Speaker 21 (02:20:33):
Well, I think that you have to give a lot
of trust to that unit and that team that they're
going to figure it out. Especially by the way, with
the reported edition back of Elijah Robinson at defensive line coach.

Speaker 4 (02:20:43):
He's one of the best in the industry.

Speaker 7 (02:20:45):
Yeah, there's another team in the state of Texas that
still can bring home a title.

Speaker 3 (02:20:49):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (02:20:49):
Texas Tech takes on Oregon in the Orange Bowl eleven
am kick on New Year's Day. Listen, Sehan, we could
talk about it being a closer game than expected with JMU,
but a couple of turnovers for Dante More in that matchup.
If you're Joey McGuire watching the film, what's your biggest
takeaway from what you saw at Anton Stadium?

Speaker 21 (02:21:07):
Well, I think the biggest thing is just like you
have to find a way to get to Dante More
because when he's playing in structure, he is almost unstoppable,
Like he is crazy, crazy good when he's not pressured.
If you can get to him though, like you said,
he starts to the clock starts to speed up, he
starts to make mistakes. I think that that's what you
need to happen, because when I look at the Tech

(02:21:28):
Tech defense, I mean they're they're really really good everywhere,
let me be clear about that.

Speaker 4 (02:21:32):
But where they're not, like god tier level is in
the secondary.

Speaker 21 (02:21:37):
They're a very good secondary, but they're not you know again,
they're not Ohio State in the secondary. And so I
think that if you're Oregon, you're trying to get outside,
you're trying to create one on one matchups, You're trying
to get to Corey and more of the ball in space.
They might have Evan Stewart back even that game, Like,
that's how you're trying to attack Texas Tech.

Speaker 4 (02:21:56):
And you have to be if you're the Red.

Speaker 21 (02:21:58):
Raiders, really aggressive, really patient, really try to make mistakes
off this team, because I actually think that they're going
to be able to stop the run at a high level,
which I think is a huge deal. Against an Oregon
team that runs the bough at an incredibly high level,
it's gonna be okay, you know, are you able to
cause issues for that passing game, force mistakes and give

(02:22:19):
your offense more opportunities shan we got.

Speaker 3 (02:22:21):
About thirty seconds here, but Texas making a little bit
of a surprise move over the weekend, bringing back Will
mush Champs, sending Peak quick Kowski out the door. Just
your thoughts on that and also what Steve Sarkisian said
in regards to making said moves.

Speaker 21 (02:22:37):
Yeah, I look, I think that for me, I've been
pretty consistent over the past two or three years that
I felt like their offensive inconsistency has been the biggest issue.
So you know, for me, it was certainly a surprise
decision to let Peak quick Kowski go. I think he's
been a top five coordinator in college football the past
couple of years. You know, I think it's a risk
that certainly has some upside. I think that Will must

(02:22:59):
Champ obviously has one at the highest level. But I mean,
if Steve Sarkisian's answer to fixing the offenses him being
less of the head coach, I just don't know how
I feel about that.

Speaker 7 (02:23:09):
Shanji Raja from CBS Sports joining us on the Morning Drive. Shahan,
as always, you are the best and I can't wait
to talk to you about how the hell is Texas
Tech And Joey McGuire gonna be able to run this
thing back in twenty twenty.

Speaker 4 (02:23:20):
Six, looking forward to it.

Speaker 7 (02:23:22):
Thanks so much for having me, Sean Jiroger from CBS
Sports joining us listen. He brought us some good points,
especially when it came to Texas A and M. I
don't understand the narrative about it being a failed season.
You go a love to one, you're hand of the
schedule that is presented to you. You want to love
and to know you lost two games. Yes, it is
a terrible way to close out your year, but there
are teams that we've seen before with lesser tier talent

(02:23:43):
go seven and five and find a way to still
be able to make it seem like that they had
a good year.

Speaker 2 (02:23:47):
Well, we can expand on that.

Speaker 3 (02:23:49):
We can also squeeze in a couple more Texans notes
Larry and Stafford. See, you're right, there were working in
You want to join him someone three two on two
five seven to ninety again it's someone three two on
two five and also to time permitting Houston's own becoming
America's guest.

Speaker 2 (02:24:06):
You don't say.

Speaker 3 (02:24:07):
We'll discuss right here as it is the Morning Drive
with Dan and Cole Sports Talk seven.

Speaker 10 (02:24:11):
Ninety they are on Morning Drive. Here's Dan Matthews and
Cole Thompson, Larry and Stafford wants to weigh in. Good morning, Larry,
I did it again. Hold on, Larry, We'll get this
figured out. Yeah, Larry and Stafford. Good morning, Good morning Dan.

Speaker 8 (02:24:34):
Cole.

Speaker 12 (02:24:34):
How are y'all doing today?

Speaker 3 (02:24:35):
Just can't figure out how to work a phone system.
But aside from that, I'm okay, let's get this over with.

Speaker 12 (02:24:40):
It's all good. Cole. You just said patiently. I got
some stuff I got for you, get nothing for you.
Congratulations to those Lady Aggie volleyball players. Man, it takes
a group of women to actually shed light on the
fact that they are the beds all of our program

(02:25:01):
in the country. Now after watching them Aggie's crying against Miami,
I love the fact that the Lady Aggie volleyball team
went out and won a Natty Man because sometimes they
just take women to do things that them old Aggies
just can't do. So congratulations to them. And I got
a lot of Aggie fans. They tend to get upset
with me because obviously they know how I'm down with

(02:25:22):
the forty acres, but it's gonna be okay. Man, y'all
are gonna eventually get to the point where y'all realize
that was never mine. Anyway, Let's talk rockets, Rockets. Y'all
can't be losing to Sacramento after y'all beat Denver. Man,
that just doesn't make sense to me. It doesn't compute.
But I can tell you I like that feisty Kevin
Gardner when he's dancing on the court and going after

(02:25:42):
Bruce Bowing or whoever that was. I like that kind
of KD because that's the kind of KD is gonna
take to win you at ship. Now, Cole, let's talk
a little Texas football. Wein won seven in a row,
and I know that game yesterday was kind of pathetic
because again the offense did exactly what they did to

(02:26:06):
start the season. But sometimes football is like that, and
you gotta go through them kind of struggles to win
them kind of games to continue on your arc. And
since we didn't get no help from them, Sarres Jaggs
going to Denver and they won, this is what you're
gonna have to do on your own. You have to
win this thing out right on your own. So them

(02:26:26):
Texans just gotta go out and beat the Coats and
the Chargers or the Chargers in the coat and then
they we gotta watch the Jags get beat by the
Coats and were still the AFC Sound champions. Because I
think this team defensively is starting to just take on
a little water because we've lost some players. But we're
gonna be fine. All I know is that Nick Cayley

(02:26:47):
and c J. Stroud played like ass yesterday.

Speaker 7 (02:26:49):
No, No, Larry, Larry, Larry Larry and Larry Larry. We
are going to out Larry. We will allow us to
go ahead and say CJ. Stroud played terrible yesterday. I
Am not letting they're gonna blame Nick Cayley for the
play calling. You're not the one out there making the three.

Speaker 12 (02:27:03):
See see here you go again. This is where you
failed to understand the concepts of football, because there they
think about football that required you to have tempo and
play calling at the right time, and there were things
that Nick Tayley called that did not make any sense.
But obviously I still have not spent enough time with
you to teach you these kinds of things. But then

(02:27:29):
then I'm gonna let you understand that Cole is gonna
be okay, man just hanging there before I come replace him.

Speaker 3 (02:27:35):
In all hall oh no oh, see where's like I
said earlier, was you know Gary and Ray Spirit.

Speaker 2 (02:27:43):
I mean, it's a lot of ball humbugerround here.

Speaker 4 (02:27:45):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (02:27:45):
It's okay, it's okay.

Speaker 7 (02:27:47):
Larry can understand that mediocrity is except one his lifestyle,
so except well in my lifestyle for the Texans football.

Speaker 2 (02:27:52):
But I'm glad that you enjoyed that one yesterday. Well,
I mean, I'm gonna be out the next few days,
so maybe you know it could work. Do you want
the police called to the building. Well, no, let's not
do that.

Speaker 3 (02:28:02):
But we don't then, all right, real quick, Mac, you
got about thirty seconds.

Speaker 2 (02:28:06):
Good morning, Mac.

Speaker 20 (02:28:08):
I think we'll find out what Mike Alco is made of.
He wanted duke. The university has plenty of resources. I'm
sure he can see what he needs and a quarterback
and to replace what's left. But I think they'll be
fine if they give him time.

Speaker 2 (02:28:26):
See you, I appreciate it, Mac.

Speaker 3 (02:28:28):
I mean, you know, we'll see just how built up
this program is. I mean, like I said, he lose
Trey Zoon, he lose a lot on that offensive line. Cash,
his howl's gone, so I have my doubts real quick here, Well,
we got about thirty seconds. Sure his fifty cent the
new Rick Flair, dude tell me. So he of course
goes on the field going into the fourth quarter to
sing many Men, which apparently is the rallying song for

(02:28:51):
Oklahoma going into.

Speaker 2 (02:28:52):

Speaker 3 (02:28:55):

Speaker 2 (02:29:05):

Speaker 3 (02:29:07):
No, I mean Rick Flair basically was you know, hey,
you pay me, I'll show up and I'll be a
fan for your team.

Speaker 7 (02:29:13):
If only it ended up happening to lead a comeback
by Oklahoma against Alabama, maybe I'd pay for him.

Speaker 2 (02:29:18):

Speaker 2 (02:29:25):

Speaker 7 (02:29:27):
Cruz curse, fifty curse all now provided in the world
of college football, well, there are.
