Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Talk seven ninety Texans insider Aaron Wilson joins us
right now. Aaron, good morning. Let's start off with the
obvious question that everyone wants to know. Derek Stingley Junior
Woody marks both on the injury report. Both misspracticed yesterday,
got intuition going into walk throughs this afternoon. Are either
one of them going to see the field comes Sunday.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Right in the next hour. We'll see if they practice,
and Woody Marx told me he intends to practice, So
we'll see if Woody falls through on that and he's
out there today, and if he does practice, he doesn't
have any setbacks. I would think he'll play on Sunday.
But I think they'll have a division of workload because
Nick Chubb is good to go, and we also what
(00:41):
Jaar Jordan can do. But I don't think they shake
it up that much like all of a sudden Jaar
Jordan's leap bargaining these guys on the depth chart just
based on one football game. But I anticipate Derek Stilly
Junior to give it a go, as he has said
many times, takes a lot to keep him out of
the game. No sense than anything is real serious with him.
(01:02):
One thing that probably is worth watching on Sunday. If
they're going to lead, I'm expecting a lot of substitution
to happen.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Okay, I want to get to that point. Actually, So
this is a game to where I and I'm going
to be completely real. We're not breaking down this game.
You and I probably both agree. I think America agrees
that the Texans are going to win. Texas will get
ten wins on the year, there'll be one step closer
to the playoff. Who is a name that you're looking
to see how a bigger role in the second half
that could end up playing a big factor when it
comes to playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
On the offensive side of the football, Dalton Schultz, because
there's been an expansion of the targets for him, and
I think he's capable of that every week. This is
just a choice that they have to make to emphasize
the tight end position, and he's certainly capable of doing
some damage. Guys had it's flowing under the radar. I
(01:54):
think some of this toot's because he's not a big
self promoter at all. He doesn't really do a lot
of interviews, kind of reluctant label chat. He's very good
and very insightful when he does talk, but he's not
out there pumbing himself up, and he didn't really look
for that. But I think Goldon Schotz has quietly had
a really commendable season. And then on defense, there's a
(02:14):
couple of guys that they don't get a lot of love,
but Henry Totoo and Toma Tige. You though, Yeah, there's
been a lot of praising Dimiko Ryans, but I still
don't think there's a lot of awareness about him around
the league. For those guys gonna fly under the raidar
a little bit. Toto has played some very good football,
had kind of a rough start of the year, say
much better lately.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Sports Talk seven ninety NFL insider Aaron Wilson, also our
KPRC joins us right here on the morning drive Sports
Talk seven ninety, Aaron Dimiko Ryans as an opportunity to
be the fastest coach in franchise history to get to
thirty wins. Texans went on Sunday, they have an opportunity
to get to twelve winch would be the most since
the Gary Kubiak era. If they are to win on
out when I bring this up to you. I think
(02:54):
it's a hot take, but I also think that there's
some validity behind it. If the Texans already he gets
twelve wins this year, has Demiko solidified himself as the
best coach in franchise history?
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yet? You know, I think that's the title is going
to go to the coach that takes them somewhere they
haven't been before, and that's the AFC Championship Game. Well,
once he does that, he will edge out Garry Kubiak,
his former coach. I think that's the real marking point
for being the best is taking this where they have
(03:29):
been and as you guys know, they're zero and six
all time in the divisional round. So that next step,
and I think that's when you can say, by any
measure that he's the best coach they've had, the most
successful coach they've had. And I think ultimately, you know,
for coaches, wins and losses, that's what distinguishes them the most,
(03:50):
not just the intangibles and the newness of this. You know,
back when Gary was here, they have some good seasons,
they have some good football players. I would cover a
lot of those games against the Texans when I was
covering the Baltimore Ravens, but I think that this era
has the potential to go much higher than the Kubiak era.
But until they do it, it's potential, and I think
(04:13):
they're right within striking distance. They're close.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Okay. So the thing that I threw out this year
is that, like the Texans, I don't know if this
is the best thing that they've ever had. What I
will say is this is the first time I felt
confident that they are going to go on a run
in the playoffs. You feel like that everything is still
ahead of them. They're playing with fire right now. They're
hot when it comes to the defensive side. They figured
out an idaddy on offense. The fact that you don't
have a Lamar Jackson in the playoffs, the fact that
(04:38):
you don't have a Joe Burrow in the playoffs, no
Patrick Mahomes, and it does feel like it's Buffalo season
only because if they have an MVP quarterback, that's the
only thing standing in your way. Should that give you
a sense of confidence that, again, we've never seen this
team make a run towards the conference championship. As long
as they aren't having the self inflicted wounds. They should
(04:58):
find themselves in that capgory of maybe playing all the
way up until the last week of the regular of
the postseason.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
I agree, Yeah, cool, there's no reason for there to
be afraid of any of these teams. That includes the Broncos,
the Patriots, and the Buffalo Bills. They've already beaten the
Bills and they can do it again with the Broncos.
They were in that football game c J. Stroud got
knocked out of the game with a concussion, and then
you know, Patriots, they are a new team this year
(05:27):
with like Rabel, They've definitely made some improvements. We saw
what they did last year against Drake May, but that
was his rookie year. It's a different Drake May. So
that is a bit of an unknown. When it comes
to New England and you know they have Trivia on Henderson,
there's some changes there in New England. I think Auld
obviously more inspired football team with Rabel's coaching style. But
these other teams, I mean, I don't think it's gonna
(05:49):
be afraid. I mean, they have a great defense. Nobody
really wants to play the Texans. They're the most dangerous
defense in the NFL, and the offense they're getting get
done a little bit working like action, but certainly they're
putting up points and c J. Stroud going off script,
run over the middle, deserving of the praise he's getting
locally and nationally because he's up to his game. He's
(06:11):
taking care of the football. So I look at the
Texans of the team. It's peaking at the right time
here in December and has a chance to play some
very meaningful football games in January. You know, it's like
the McNair's the same as to how they park giveaway.
Tom mc nerv was talking about, you know, the important
games and the focus and handed mcgerror's talking about that.
I see it. I think this team definitely on the
(06:34):
mission and just the bib around them, it's good. You know,
we're there every day talking to these guys, talking with
the mccaron, with the players in the locker room, and
it's a close team, good camaraderie. Definitely a team I
think is gonna make some noise in the playoffs once
they get there. They got to get there and they
got to keep it up and stay focused and take
care of business like they we expect them to. Against
(06:56):
Las Vegas, Raiders will have two wins this year, but
to me, it feels like a team that's on the
cusp of something.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Aaron, We're not gonna spend any time talking about this
Las Vegas Rares team. And you know that you know
the NFL as well as anybody else out there, and
that's the thing is that I don't think that would
give you enough credit for being able to speak on
what is the league. So last night we saw two
of the better teams in the NFC, two teams that
beat the Texans in Seattle and Los Angeles go toe
to toe with each other. Overall thoughts on those two teams.
(07:22):
Do you feel like, just from a broader standpoint, if
the Texans were to go to the Super Bowl, those
would be the two from the NFC that you worry
about the most of being able to hoist up a
Lombardi Trophy and not bring history down to Houston.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Loved that game last night, watched all of it and
didn't listen to the calls. But other than that, I
love this game. I thought that, you know, when they
played Seattle Los Angeles, the Texans just weren't quite there.
Especially against Seattle. It was pretty glaring they weren't playing
very well themselves, and Seattle looked awesome, but La so
(07:56):
they were in the game. They had some problems. Sure,
everybody has problems with Puka Nakua and Matthew Stafford, but
I do any tough. I don't think they would be
the favorites against either of those teams, obviously having lost
to them, if they did get to the Super Bowl,
which is real far down the road but hard enough
to think about it. I was thinking about this last nay.
I was like, I was telling my wife, I said, yeah,
(08:17):
those are two teams that Texans couldn't beat. They're on
this winning streak now, but we're just watching, you know,
watching how great both those teams are playing, and the
play calling and the strategy and oh that was a cool,
cool football game. And I mean, if you're Amazon, you
gonna be pretty happy about that game. That is the
best game I've watched on Thursday night this year.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Aaron Wilson KPRC News Sports Talks Haven ninety Texans insider
Aaron appreciate the time today. I'll see yeah, I'll see
you like a what thirty match or so, because I'll
be out practice, so we'll see Why I get there
all right?
Speaker 2 (08:50):
I'd be good, all right, say
