Orange Bloods coming on at eight a m. To talk.

hear it on air. But we'll give you a chance
to win a pair of tickets to go to a concert.
As always, I want to get into this conversation because
of the fact that there was a lot going on
last night for the Texas women. Texas women went on
(02:42):
the road and took on another top ten team in
the Kentucky Wildcats, but it was no match. Mark was asking,
why is this game looking like it's gonna be a runaway?
Everybody believes that Texas is the better team. This is
a top eighteen. Xus is the top two team. Texas
is a top three team. Texas is a team that
(03:04):
could be the number one team in the country when
it's all said and done. And what did they do.
They went to Lexicon, Kentucky and played their behind out.
Madison Booker another great game, shot fifty percent from the field,
had nineteen points. Taylor Jones did her thing again. We
(03:25):
also got to give some love to Kyler Oldacre. She
continues to get better and better and she finally got
foul calls for her. She went nine of ten from
the free throw line. And when you got Taylor Jones
and you have Kyla Oldacre playing the way that they did,
(03:46):
there's nothing but success on that team. Shay Holly hit
a three early in the game. Rory did her thing
by controlling the offense and making sure people are in
the right spot. You gotta tip your hat to Jordan League.
Jordan Lee is one of the better players in the country,
let alone being a freshman. She's so mature, she's a
(04:09):
McDonald's all American. We understand that, but coming into a
program like the University of Texas and being able to
hold your own, being able to be a part of
the success of this team, this isn't easy. And Vic
Shaeffer told us all early in the year. He was like, listen,
(04:30):
your time to earn more playing time is in those
non com games, but once you get into SEC play,
I'm doing everything I can to win these ball games.
There's no walks in the park in the SEC. We've
seen it. We're watching it with men's basketball, but watching
it with the women's game and watching how Texas has
(04:54):
been able to control the game. It is exciting to
watch and if you're not really diving into everything that's
happening with these ladies, they're twenty five and two, eleven
and one in the SEC, and not only have they
been playing top teams, they've been pretty much dominating them.
(05:16):
And I want to give a little love to Madison Booker.
Madison Booker. In the last five games versus ranked opponents,
she went twenty eight, four and three against Maryland, at
the time was number eight. She had twenty six six
and two versus number seventeen Tennessee. She had twenty six
(05:39):
and four against Vanderbilt. She had twenty eleven and three
against South Carolina, and then she had nineteen eight and
four assists against Kentucky. All I can say is we
know that Madison Booker is really good, but when the
primetime matchup. One bad game that she had was against
(06:02):
South Carolina at South Carolina, but she had great shots.
She did what she needed to do. But after the game, postgame,
she was asked about, hey, how did you guys move
past South Carolina, stayed focused and came back in to
take on Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yes, I had said that You're win against South Carolina
really put texas something, Matt, that you're a contender for
a national championship. How were you all able to come
in today and not have a carryover or a letdown
from such a big game.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yeah, I mean that is hardy.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Sometimes there's a great team and you know, after that win,
you know, like a lot of hyper around our names
now and I just think that we have to have
a mindset well, not satisfied, and that we're still hungry,
that we're still we're still going for you know, a
different goal.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Did you know one game win?
Speaker 4 (06:51):
So I just think that also, like as mature mindset,
so you have to have that too, that you want
to get better.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
And weebertying every day, one percent every day and they
continue to do it. And Vic is demanding, let's not
sugarcoat it. He lets you know right off the rip
what he expects from everybody. And as I said, if
you're not if you're not holding it down as a
true freshman or a transfer or whatever it may be,
if you're not doing the things that he's asking, where
(07:17):
he believes and can trust you, then you're not gonna play.
And we've been able to see that. But one of
the main things that Vic has always talked about, always
talked about, you have to be able to play defense,
and even when you don't have your best defense, you
got to be able to show out. And that's what
he talked about post game with Roger Wallace.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
That's the defense, rebounding inside game, that's the magic formula
for winning on the road.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
We did that tonight. Think about it.
Speaker 5 (07:49):
Our defense off the chart wasn't no best night, and
yet you still win by eighteen.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
So I'm proud of him. That's a really good team
over there that we just And that's how you go
out there and you play, you beat them, you handle it.
Now you're on to the next and that next game
is not an easy game. While LSU is coming in
to Moody Center this Sunday two o'clock tip on ABC,
(08:15):
but obviously you can listen to the game on one
O three one FM. LSU is one of the top
teams in the country. LSU, led by Kim Moulki, is
always in contention. And that is why I say, when
you look at this SEC schedule and you get a
chance to see that Texas is eleven and one in
(08:36):
the SEC, and think about the teams Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama,
which is ring. Then you play Auburn, you play South
Carolina twice already and you split with them. You beat Tennessee,
you beat Missouri, you beat Texas, A and M. Then
(08:56):
you play Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Kentucky, and now you
get ready to play a top five ranked LSU. That's
four ranked teams in a row, and now you get
three of those four at home, and all you got
to do is handle your business this weekend. I've been
so impressed with the way that Vick Schaeffer has run
(09:17):
this team has organized, and I watched the coaches every
single game. I pay attention to the coaches all the time,
and what he does in his staff. He talks about
his staff a lot. The advanced scouting that they do.
All the scouting is outstanding, but if the kids don't
go out and execute it, the scouting can be thrown
(09:39):
out the window. We've seen it happen all over the place.
But these young ladies have bought into everything because, as
Madison Booker said just a little while ago, it's more
than one game. We have a bigger goal in mind,
and that bigger goal is to be hoisting the trophy
at the end of the season. And one thing's for sure,
(10:02):
when Texas gets ready to play in the postseason, they
cannot be denied the fact that they are battled tested.
They've gone everywhere, They've played everyone that really matters. Obviously,
last night UCLA and USC Juju Watkins destroyed UCLA. So
(10:26):
those two teams are gonna be a problem, and hopefully
those teams, Texas gets a chance to play one of
those teams for a national championship. But they have been
nothing short of impressive the way that they've been able
to hold their ground on all of these different teams.
It's been a good look. It's been an exciting look.
(10:47):
And as I said, some of these freshmen that are
having the ability to step up in those particular moments,
it is an outstanding sign for this basketball team. But
as I said, make sure you packed the mood this
Sunday because LSU. Come on, y'all, it's Kim Maulky. You know,
Kim Molkey might have left Baylor and went to LSU,
(11:08):
but little did you know you were gonna see her again.
You know why, because she's back. Texas is in the
SEC and she gets to come to Austin. And the
funny thing is, I wonder what she's gonna say about
the New Digs because I don't think she's been in
the New Digs as of yet. So exciting time on
(11:29):
the forty Acres. Forty Acres had a scare yesterday and
we'll talk about it when we come back. We're just
getting started on a feel good Friday edition of the
Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to a feel good Friday edition
(12:03):
of the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Big Mark Henry is in travel
and had some hiccups in travel, so we're not going
to be able to get him on today. So it's
just your boy and Khalil holding it down. But we
want you to get over to AM thirteen hundred The
Zone on social media and check out our covert huddle
(12:28):
plays of the week. Texas wins women beat the number
two South Carolina team and then number eight Kentucky team.
The Eagles win their Super Bowl. We'll hear from Kellen Moore,
Mark's favorite coach that doesn't need to travel to the party,
and of course ut being able to send fourteen players
(12:50):
to the Combine. That's right, folks. In the last two seasons,
Texas has sent twenty five eyes to the Combine. That is,
in the last two seasons, it is tied with Georgia
for the most in the nation. Fourteen players were invited
(13:13):
this year in some of the names. I'm sure that
you're all excited about you knew about was gonna be
Kelvin Banks junior, John D. Barron, you knew that Alfred
Collins was probably gonna go. And the list goes on
and on. I Jayden Blue, Who's gonna run an unbelievable time.
He and Isaiah Bond Vernon. It has already been brought
(13:35):
in Hayden Connor Quinn. Yours is the first Texas quarterback
to go to the Combine in a long time, So
that raises a little bit of the eyebrows. Matthew Golden Gunner, him,
Jake Majors, Andrew mccooba, Baron Surrell who had an unbelievable
(13:56):
senior senior ball, and Cam Williams Now. Last year, Texas
in eleven guys, which was the most in the program
behind and they were second behind Michigan. So this year
they are sending that many guys to the Combine. And
(14:17):
it's exciting because for years we as fans were talking
about Texas doesn't have the talent, Texas doesn't develop when
you go to Texas, and that was the selling point
for recruits elsewhere. When you were going against Texas in recruiting,
you were like, hey, do you want to go to
(14:38):
the league or do you just want to go get
some gear. Now, it's like the development part of it.
And even coach Sark yesterday did hashtag development because that
is what we're starting to see from this program. Number One,
you got to have elite players. Number two, you got
to be able to buy in. And number three, you
got to have the coaching staf which leads me to
(15:02):
my other point. But you gotta have the coaching staff
to be able to motivate these kids, to get them
to buy in, and to get them to understand that
everything that you are doing is for the betterment of
you and the betterment of this program. Now Texas, who
(15:24):
we've talked about before, coaches aren't getting fired from the
University of Texas anymore. They're getting elevated. And when I
say elevate, you look at what Blake Gideon was able
to do. Blake Gideon now is going to be the
defensive coordinator for Georgia Tech. That's an upgrade because he
(15:47):
wasn't going to replace p K who was up for
the Broyles Award. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award.
He came up short. Al Golden got the Award, but
he is the defensive coordinator for the Texas Longhorns and
for Blake get In, it's an opportunity to lead the defense,
but you got to replace that. They did replace that
(16:09):
with another secondary coach that we talked about yesterday. Now
you start to look at the defense, I mean the
offense in that running back room, and the news came
out yesterday that to Shard Choice is expected to join
the Detroit Lions coaching staff as the running backs coach
(16:32):
for them. Now that's a staff that lost a lot.
They lost Ben Johnson to take a head coaching job
in the offensive coordinator, that lost the defensive coordinator, Aaron
Glenn to take a head coaching job, So there was
movement there. Now you look at to Shark Choice, and
(16:52):
I saw yesterday on Twitter everybody kept saying it was
a bad look for the Cowboys because remember he had
an opportunity to go to the Cowboys and he turned
it down. And people are like, oh man, that's a
bad look for the Cowboys. It's really not. It's really
not a bad look for the Cowboys. It's a great
look for Tashar Choice because that gave him options and
(17:15):
then it made people understand that he was open to
going to the NFL, but when he chose the Detroit Lions,
that's when all it was like, Oh my god, I
can't believe he would do that. Why wouldn't he go
to the Cowboys? And I'll tell you why. Number One,
he's got a relationship with Jamiir Gibbs, and Jamiir Gibbs
(17:41):
is one of the most explosive backs in the NFL.
If he wasn't every downback, I think that. I mean,
I think he could be a Sa Kwan Barkley type
of number because he's that fast number one and number two.
If he's behind an offensive line like that, I think
he could go for two k I think he could.
(18:04):
And to Shark Choice in him, our friends to Shark
Choice recruited him. He recruited him to Georgia Tech. Also,
you look at the running back situation. You got Jamier,
Gibbs and Montgomery, and what do you have in Dallas?
You don't have anything. We talked about it yesterday. What
(18:27):
are you gonna do with ric o' daldel? What are
you gonna do? I know that Deuce Vaughan is in
the picture, but he's not at every down back these guys.
If you could walk into a locker room and you
got Sonic the Hedgehog in there, and you got Lightning
and Jamier Gibbs like, yeah, give me that, sign me
(18:51):
up for that. That's easy work for me. So yes,
you gotta make sure that it ain't broke. That's what
you gotta do when you go to Detroit. So I'm
happy for tashark choice. It sucks because Texas now is
in the market for not only safety's coach. I think
they got that figured out, but also you get in
(19:13):
the runnings backs coach, and I'm sure that they're gonna
feel that quickly at University of Texas. Sorryca's got a
lot of relationships around the country and you come here
and you got that running back room that Texas has.
I think it's going to be good, and I think
that's a job that somebody will walk into and really
help continue to grow that room. But not only did
(19:35):
you lose both of those guys, you lost great recruiters.
Not only were they good coaches, they are excellent recruiters.
You can see what Texas has over the last few
years and the signing period and now the top running
back in the country is a little disappointed that Tashar
(19:56):
Choice is going to be gone from the University of Texas.
But hey, here's the deal man. When you're good, people
come and poach you. When you start to trend in
the right direction, people come looking for you. Think about this,
Texas now. Texas now has just sent twenty five players
(20:22):
to the combine. This is invitation. You just can't show up.
They have sent twenty five players to the NFL Combine
in the past two years. And what has happened in
those last two years. Texas goes what twelve and two
(20:45):
last year, or excuse me, thirteen and three last year.
In twenty twenty three, Texas goes twelve and two. In
twenty twenty two they went eight and five. And that
is after twenty twenty one going five and seven. You
(21:05):
see what I'm talking about here. The trend, the way
that things are leveling, the way that Texas is getting
back to who Texas is supposed to be. That is
what you want to see. And if I'm a parent
of a recruiter, or if I'm a recruit and I
believe I got aspirations of being on that next level,
(21:30):
why not come to the forty acres and get yourself
an opportunity to develop and change the narrative of this program. Unbelievable, folks, unbelievable.
Texas will be okay, but there's a lot that goes
into it. When we come back, we're gonna talk some
major League baseball. Yeah, man, there's some changes that are happening.
(21:52):
And I also want to talk Alex Bregman astro fans.
How you feeling right here on the morning kickoff on
Sports Radio and thirteen hundred.
Speaker 6 (22:02):
This is all.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
You know. Baseball season is my second favorite time of
the year. That's right, folks. It's not always about the
baseball and making it the first, you know, part of everything.
I'm a big time football fan. I love football, but
baseball is here and now it is the time for
us to truly understand what baseball is all about. As
(22:41):
you know, Texas baseball. And we'll have our guys Zack
sim joining us at the top of the hour to
talk Texas baseball. They open up tonight. But one of
the biggest things for me has always been major league baseball.
As a kid, I thought for sure I was going
to be a major leaguer. My entire life. I were
so hard for it, got drafted and had an opportunity
(23:05):
to play for a very long time. But when you
become that high power, that top of the line dude
that can do whatever you want, and become a free agent,
all you ever want is to feel worthy, right like,
you want to make sure that you maximize every opportunity
(23:27):
that you can get. So when it comes to free agency,
there's a lot of opportunity out there if you put
together good numbers and you get this chance, you want
to be able to write your own check. Now, some
of them, I've been in some of those meetings where
I've heard about arbitration and all that other stuff, and
(23:47):
they don't feel your worth is what you think your
worth it truly is, And I believe that's what happened
with Alex Bregman. Alex Bregman is one of the all
time good players for the Houston Astros. I'm not gonna
call him great just yet, but he was part of
the success of winning a World Series championship. I thought
(24:13):
for sure he was going to be one of those
guys that was going to stay in Houston. I thought
the Houston Astro fans deserve that. But after you've won
these championships, they become hot commodities. We've been talking about
it with all of the coaches staff. So Alex Bregman,
(24:35):
Carlos Korea, and now Kyle Tucker and now Bregman are
all gone from the Houston Astros. Last man standing from
that core Jose Altuve. And Alex Bregman is an impactful player.
(24:57):
He's one of the best players to ever done that
uniform as far as his impact on the field and
his impact off the field. And it's different. It's different
for a lot of guys. And I know I'll talk
to you. I talk about this all the time. It's
the business of it, all right, You're you're dealing with
business moves. But the Astros now have to find a
(25:21):
guy that can fill that void. And it's not normal.
It's not normal just to find a guy that can
do the things that Alex Bregman did. Alex Bregman turned
down money from the Houston Astros because he didn't think
it was fair. Astros offered him six million for one
fifty six. The Tigers offered him six years, one seventy
(25:46):
one point five. The Cubs offered him four years, one
twenty but he took the money from the Red Sox
because he's now making forty million dollars per year. Forty million.
Think about that and if that were you, would you
(26:11):
want to put on one of the long standing organizations
in the game and get a chance to go play
in Boston where you have the Green Wall and Alex Bregman.
And every time he played at Fenway his career total
is three seventy five Batten average and a one point
(26:33):
two four ops. He had two sixty nine at Men
in May, which is a short porch. But I believe
that he made the best decision for him. And now
you're going to be in the in the AFC East,
I mean AFC East, the Al East, against some true talent.
(26:55):
The the Yankees got better. The Blue Jays, I don't
know what the heck is going on with them, and
we still got to figure out what's happening with Tampa.
But you're gonna be in a battle every single week.
I wonder if the booze are gonna still be loud
for him being in that division. I'm sure it is
because those fans don't care. They're gonna be mad at everything.
(27:18):
But when you start to look at all of these
teams and how it breaks down. What do the Astros
do with this loss at third base? Not only is
it a loss, it's a loss because of the leadership,
all those HB commercials that he had in h town.
He was a fixture in that town. So now he
(27:41):
goes to Boston. Now Boston will also have to deal
with Baltimore, who is up and coming. So Boston had
to bolster their offense to be able to keep up
with what the Yankees were able to do. And obviously,
like I said, the Baltimore Oriols Orioles who have been savvage.
(28:01):
So it to be interesting. I know it's a change
of coming. There's a lot that goes down with Major
League Baseball, and this is the time where everybody tries
to figure out who's gonna step in, who's gonna be
the leader in the clubhouse, who's going to make this move.
But now it's a little bit different when all these
things start to come down. Now, what does Altuve have
(28:26):
in the tank? What does Paynya? Is your don going
to be healthy? Who's the next guy to take over
for the Houston Astros. They have to make some moves.
They got to make some things happen and we'll see.
But I will say this, I think obviously Bregman is
(28:48):
going to be a big loss, but I think another
loss is going to be Kyle Tucker. Kyle Tucker was
one of my favorite. He was a thirty to thirty
guy in Round Rock and I witnessed that season and
I was like, this dude is pretty special when you
start to think about it, and sure enough gets to
(29:11):
the big leagues, integral part of the success that the
Astros had, and he's another one that needed to go
get paid. He went to go get paid. And now
everyone's trying to figure out, how do you feel that void.
Major League Baseball came out with their rankings the top
one hundred players right now, and Jose Altuve is number thirty.
(29:39):
Last year he was twenty two. He's number thirty. He
went through some injuries, had to figure some things out.
Kyle Tucker was number fourteen, Jordan Alvarez number seven. Jordan
has to stay healthy though, he has to stay healthy
for this team to succeeds an All Star caliber player
(30:01):
all the time, but for him, it's important for him
to stay healthy to help this team be able to
go so we'll see what happens with Major League baseball.
It's that time. We'll continue these conversations. Aaron Judge is
number two and the number one player in baseball. Guess
who show Hey O Tany and oh yeah, he's going
to be back on the mound as well. So it'll
(30:23):
be interesting to see how baseball plays out. Everybody's got
a chance until you get punched in the face. Then
you got to start over coming up next. Speaking of
getting punched in the face, there's only one person I
want to do that too, and I think y'all know
who that is, and we'll talk about it when we
come back. Right after these messages right here on sports Radio,
A thirteen hundred design the National Football League ever ever stops.
(31:02):
And that is why we're gonna continue to have these conversations.
Coming up at the top of the hour, though, we're
gonna talk Texas baseball with my guy, Zack sim of
Orange Bloods, as he will be in Arlington as Texas
kicks off its baseball season for the twenty twenty five season.
But I want to get into this conversation about one
(31:23):
Aaron Rodgers before we went to break. Yes, I told
you there's only one person in the world that I
want to punch in the face nowadays, and that is
Aaron Rodgers. I don't know why. He just irks me,
that's right, I use the word irk. He irks me
to no end. And yes, Golden Arm done some amazing
(31:46):
things in his career, MVPs, super Bowl Champion, But after
a while, it just kinda gets tired, right, Like you
really get tired of the nonsense in which Aaron Rodgers
continues to kind of cook up. And some of that
(32:08):
is his own, some of it is just us looking
at it and just being annoyed by him. But you know,
he's the guy that just automatically thinks he's the smartest
one in the room and drives people nuts, and he
likes to be able to orchestrate certain things and be
(32:28):
able to control the situation. Well, when you have credit built,
you normally can you can have conversations, you can have moments,
you can have different situation. But now he's gotten to
the point where he doesn't want to sacrifice anything. And
I don't know that personally, Like I told you before,
I don't know him personally, but from all signs, he
(32:50):
seems to be somebody that you don't want to hang
out with. But I want you to hear Ian Rapaport's
report on the fact that Aaron and Glenn and his
staff had to come to Jesus meeting, so to speak,
and say, guess what, we're gonna move on from you,
best of luck to you. Right.
Speaker 7 (33:11):
I want to look a little closer at how we
got here, right, because you know, obviously we learned on
Sunday that the Jets were moving on from Aaron Rodgers
today becoming official. My understanding though, is this was really
the product of several conversations with the Jets and Rogers,
and from what I am told, there was no ultimatums
made him. It wasn't like, and I know there was
a reporter it's like, well, you know, the Jets don't
(33:33):
want Aaron Rodgers to do the Pat mcabe show, and
if he agrees not to, then we'll bring him back.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
It.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
It wasn't like that.
Speaker 7 (33:39):
First of all, I don't think the Jets really care
that he's on the Pat McCabe show.
Speaker 6 (33:41):
Honestly, probably just affects the.
Speaker 7 (33:43):
PR Department, doesn't really affect anyone else.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
It's New York.
Speaker 7 (33:45):
They're plenty of distractions elsewhere. It was really more like, well,
if you go on that, could you maybe like use
a little more discretion and like, you know, they can't
tell him to show up to OTA's, that's not allowed, but.
Speaker 6 (33:57):
It's like, we'd like you to be around more. And
it really team like.
Speaker 7 (34:00):
Over the course of several discussions, Aaron Glenn, the new
head coach, and Darren Mugie and Aaron Rodgers all became
clear this was just not the direction to go. And
I think by the time that they had Aaron Rodgers
come to New Jersey andn't really talk face to face,
it was clear for both sides, both sides that this
was not going to work.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
So they are all moving on.
Speaker 7 (34:23):
Certainly you mentioned a baldy smart decision by the Jets.
Will see where Aaron Rodgers lands, if he lands.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
Okay, So thank you, Ian Rappaport. Understanding makes you sure
everybody kind of gets the gist of why Aaron Rodgers
is going to be gone looking for work. And the
question was asked yesterday and I want to continue to
think about this. What team, if any, and I'm sure
a team will take Aaron Rodgers. What team, if any,
(34:55):
is in the market, for a starting quarterback. Let's start
Buffalo nope, Miami, New England nope, because they have their guy.
The Jets, well, they're looking for one. It won't be
Aaron Rodgers. Cowboys nope. Giants Maybe maybe the Giants, but
(35:19):
they're gonna draft the quarterback I believe. Eagles nope, Commanders nope, Ravens, Bengals, Browns, maybe, Steelers,
maybe Bear's nope, Lions nope, Packers nope, Vikings, Texans, no Colts,
(35:39):
maybe Jaguars, no Titans. Tighten up, think that might be
a good look for you. Maybe Falcons, no Panthers, no Saints.
Kellen Moore, Aaron Rodgers. They just said we'll hear from
Kellen Kellen Moore in just a little bit talking about
(36:00):
his squad. Buccaneers Nope. You're invested with Baker bo Knicks
with the Broncos, Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers noe, Cardinals,
Kyler Murray Rams. Ah. That might be something. Rams might
be something. Because is Matthew Stafford going to stay or
(36:24):
is it time for Matthew Stafford to go one more
time and get it on forty nine ers. Yeah, they're
talking about giving Brock Party an extension Seahawks, Nope. And
if you're Aaron Rodgers, do you go to a team
or is a team willing to invest in Aaron Rodgers?
(36:47):
But you have to be close to winning it all?
What teams are in those positions? I don't know, But
two teams that I would look at if they're not
going to bring back Russell Will would be the Steelers,
but I don't think Mike Tomlin would put up with it.
I would look at the Titans, and I would look
(37:10):
at the Browns if the Browns are going to keep
Miles Garrett, because you need a defense, because you're not
Aaron Rodgers. You need an old line. And I believe
that they have a decent enough old line in Cleveland
to keep him up right. But is somebody willing the
Saints is interesting to me, And I thought about the
(37:31):
Saints just a little while ago. That is really interesting
to me. Those in the Raiders, those are the Raiders
kind of intrigued me. I really don't know about Cleveland though.
There's only truly there's a report that's out there by
Nick Schuk around the NFL NFL writer, and he said
(37:54):
that there's a couple teams that are out there, Raiders, Giants,
Browns and Steelers. Yeah, that's like I thought. The Steelers though, Okay,
if he were to go to the Browns. Obviously, the
Deshaun Watson debacle has happened. Jamis Winston is still out
(38:15):
there as well. So do you want Jamis or do
you want Aaron Rodgers? I know it sounds crazy to
even put those two in the same conversation, But is
Aaron Rodgers considered that elite still? I don't think so.
But if you're Cleveland, do you make a move to
get the Shadeur Sanders cam Ward play or go with
(38:39):
Jackson dark Mark Henry's guy? Or do you go get
Kirk Cousins because Kirk Cousins is more safe than Aaron Rodgers. Interesting,
we'll see what this lunatic. Maybe I shouldn't say that,
what this guy is capable of doing? And who will
(38:59):
take a chance on Aaron Rodgers. Our number one is
in the books. Coming up. In our number two, we'll
have our guys, Zach sim from Orange Bloods joining us
in just a moment to talk Texas baseball. Baseball season
is here, folks, and we're going to continue the conversations
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and
thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Honie Wee Hall of Famer Mark Henry on your hole
for the Horse, thirteen hundred this song.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
Welcome back to our number two of the morning kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
our number one. We talked a lot about the Texas
women's impressive road victory as they went to Kentucky and
won the game sixty seven forty nine. We talked about
Tashar Choice making the move and going to the NFL.
(39:54):
We also talked Alex Bregman in the move with him
going to Boston Baseball season here on the forty acres
and you will be listening to my man, Zach sim
of Orange Bloods. Go to Orangebloods dot com and you
can follow on on social media at Zach at the
Dish all season long. He will be joining us on
(40:15):
Fridays at this time. Zach, you're gonna be making your
way to Arlington if you're not already there for the
opening series series with the new head coach of the
Texas Longhorns, Jim Slosnegel, breaking in his new era.
Speaker 6 (40:33):
Yes, Sir up in Arlington, made it safely.
Speaker 8 (40:36):
You know, a little rain here and there, but it's
all indoors, so thankfully know what he delays on opening day.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
No doubt. So coach was talking about it. We had
coach on yesterday. He came in talked about his starting
rotation this weekend. And this is big for so many
different reasons because number one, new era, new head, coach,
new players, and right now we've got a new opening
day starter that was starting at Indiana State.
Speaker 6 (41:06):
Yeah, absolutely, Lieutenant Jared Spencer. He comes from Indiana State.
Speaker 8 (41:10):
You know, he had a three year career there. He
only made nine starts last year. He's made eleven starts
total in his career. But when you look at the numbers,
he's a guy that's pitched a lot of innings. He's
had a lot of experience. He's played in some big
games and in fact that he helped knock Louisville out
of the out of the determined a couple of years ago. So,
(41:31):
you know, really good kid, and he's got a lot
of deception on that of that high heater he hit
the throws.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
What is the We'll get back into the pitching rotation
because Luke Harrison will go tomorrow night and TVD will
be going on Front Sunday. That's always my favorite pitcher
because you never know what you're gonna get from him.
But going into this weekend, obviously Texas have taken on
Louisville Ole Miss in Oklahoma State, and you and I
(42:00):
have talked about this before. This has never been a
really good weekend for Texas baseball when they get a
chance to go to Arlington over the years. I mean,
obviously they can go out there and play well, but
coach said that he wants to see his team play well.
What are your expectations heading into the weekend.
Speaker 8 (42:23):
You know, for me, I think the biggest thing is,
you know, you want to see the defense come out
and play a solid, foundational game, you know, not boot
the ball around, get used to the to the season,
the adrenaline everything's going from the hitters. You want to
see them just take their approach. So for those that
haven't seen slast n Egal offenses before, they like to
(42:44):
take a lot of pitches. They like to hunt their
pitches in the zone and then they like to sit
back and wait and force pitchers to really come inside.
And so you know, if the guys are not going
up there and happening at the first thing they're seeing,
they're getting excited, So just staying with it or approach.
And then from the pitching standpoint, you know you want
to come in and see them just throw strikes. To
(43:06):
be honest, you know, Max wieners Is mantra Is dominate
the zone.
Speaker 6 (43:11):
You always throw strike one.
Speaker 8 (43:12):
So you don't want to see them going up there
and trying to nibble around the ages.
Speaker 6 (43:16):
Just attack, trust your defense behind you.
Speaker 8 (43:18):
I mean, honestly, for me, it's just keeping it simple
and letting the talent take over.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
No doubt. So I wanted to ask you this too,
because we're talking to Zach Siam. You can follow them
that Zach at the dish on social media. You know,
I sit here and I'm looking at this team and
I'm looking at this roster. Obviously they've made some adjustments.
You're gonna probably have some young guys that are gonna
get a chance early, but settling in with the same
(43:46):
guys Jalen floor As, Kimball Schuschler, Ryan Galvan, Max Blu
and Will Gasparino from last year. This team is gonna
score some runs, don't you think.
Speaker 6 (43:58):
Yeah, they've got to. They've gotta very physical lineup.
Speaker 8 (44:01):
I don't know if you've seen the guys lately, but yep, no,
there's guys on the team that have put on fifteen
to twenty pounds in the offseason. Gasprina looks like a
completely different player from a physical standpoint, And so when
you look at the hitting ability then factor and the
mental approach that Tulo brings, Yeah, I think these guys
are going to hit quite a few, quite a few
bombs this year.
Speaker 6 (44:21):
I think. No, maybe not twenty twenty.
Speaker 8 (44:23):
One with Ivan Melndez leading the way, but you're gonna
see some some good offense out of this team.
Speaker 1 (44:28):
So I wanted to ask about the freshman Adrian Rodriguez.
He's somebody that opened some eyes in the alumni game
with his approach at the play. He seems to be
pretty steady and on that left side of the field.
You know, obviously, with jaln flora as being the starting shortstop,
he's going to be more of the leader and the
calming force for this baseball team. But what do you
(44:51):
take away from Adrian Rodriguez with the little bit that
you've seen from him?
Speaker 6 (44:57):
You know, the thing that stood out to me was
how calm me.
Speaker 8 (45:01):
You know, when you when you hear about a guy
that's a switch hitter coming into college, you're always like, Okay,
well you know where you actually gonna hit from, because
typically you have a power side and then a contact side.
Speaker 6 (45:13):
He's not that way.
Speaker 8 (45:14):
I mean, they coaches like him to hit left handed
just because it adds another dimension to the lineup. But
for me, you know, watching him in the fall, watch
him in the spring, he doesn't let things overwhelm him.
Speaker 6 (45:26):
He doesn't get too hurried in the moment.
Speaker 8 (45:27):
He stays very well grounded, right, And that's the biggest
takeaway for me is, you know, if you can let
the game come to you and not try to do
too much, trust that middle of the in the field
because you do have a guy like Jalen Flores and
then a guy like Ethan and does on the other side.
Speaker 6 (45:42):
Of course gal Vaughan behind the plate.
Speaker 8 (45:44):
You got experience around you to let let the game
handle itself. So yeah, he's really been impressive. I've you
don't see any freshmen that come in and handle the
hot corner like that.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
Yeah. It's kind of funny too, because coach Slasnegel yesterday
was talking about the the freshman effect, right, there's not
a lot of young guys that can come in and play,
not only at the college level, but at the SEC level.
And he told the story about why at Langford who's
starting for the Texas Rangers, and how he only had
(46:16):
four at bats in his freshman year and then obviously
he's an eight million dollars signing bonus and got up
to the big leagues in such a quick fashion. So
the patience is going to be important for a lot
of these young guys.
Speaker 6 (46:33):
Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 8 (46:34):
I mean you're going to see some young guys get
their chance, and you're gonna see some guys that are
transfers that you know they've played big games before, but
maybe not at this kind of level.
Speaker 6 (46:43):
And so.
Speaker 8 (46:45):
Especially the pitchers, yep, you know, you've got to keep
the heart beat slow, you got to focus on your breathing,
take it one pitch at a time, not let too
much go on. So yeah, I think it'll be interesting
to see how everyone handles it. But you know that again,
Push Los n Agle, Nolan Came, Max Wiener, Tulo, all
of them are very big on a mental approach, and
so I think that that's helped this team, you know,
(47:07):
come together and understand, hey, we've been there, we've done this,
we have a talent.
Speaker 6 (47:12):
Let's play our game. Let's not get wrapped up and
everything around us.
Speaker 1 (47:15):
Zach, what do you know about Louisville, Ole Miss, and
Oklahoma State. I mean, I know, it's kind of tough
because it's the very beginning of the season. They've made
some moves in the transfer portal, all these teams and
once again Texas going out there and having top notch
talent right off the bat in their first three games
(47:36):
of the season. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (47:39):
So Louisville's a team.
Speaker 8 (47:40):
You know, they've they've missed the postseason the last two
years in a row, which is a bit surprising for
the team like Louisville. Who's you know, they were in
Omahawk constant there for a couple of years and so
they're looking to get back on track. They're picked eighth
in the ACC. I think they're probably a little bit
better than that, but the ACC, much like the SEC,
is pretty dang deep, and so over the years they've
(48:02):
had issues with their pitching was good, the hitting wasn't,
or the hitting was good, or the.
Speaker 6 (48:06):
Pitching wasn't They looked a little more balance this year.
Speaker 8 (48:09):
Doesn't look like a team that's going to hit for
a lot of power, but they play really good defense.
So I think this is actually a good test for
Texas right out of the gates for their offense to
say can we overcome this defense.
Speaker 6 (48:21):
They're starters.
Speaker 8 (48:22):
Patrick Forbes, he's a right hander that you know, he's
got some good experience behind him. He didn't get a
ton of time that he should have got last year
because of him being a two way player. He got
hit and got on his handing. I was injured for
a little bit. But he's got an electric fastball and
he showed it. So you know, that's a really good
test for Texas. And then the big arm to watch
(48:44):
for Louisville's if they get to the back of the game,
they've got an All American and Tucker Bivin, he's got
some electric stuff. And then offensively from Louisville, the kid
to watch, the sophomore, Zion Rose. He's just electricity at bottle.
He kind of reminds me of Gyllan Gambell and a
lot of aspects. He could hit, he can run, he
plays defense. Oh Miss very similar situation. You know, they're
(49:08):
picked fifteenth out of sixteen in the SEC. They missed
the NCAA tournament again, you know, just two years removed
from winning a national title. Bianco's made some changes to
his pitching staff, but they got a lot of experience
on the mounds.
Speaker 6 (49:22):
They're going to like the fifth or six year senior
in Riley Maddox.
Speaker 8 (49:26):
He doesn't have the greatest numbers, but as you know,
experience is what matters. And then the offensive player to
watch for them is Mitch Stanford. He's a originally an
LSC kid that then went to New Orleans and he's
got some impressive numbers.
Speaker 6 (49:40):
I think he hit three eighty one with fifteen homers
last year sixty seven RBIs. So they're they're looking to
retool that offense again.
Speaker 8 (49:48):
Third team that's not going to have a ton of power,
but they do have a couple of guys in the
lineup that can do some damage. And then the exact
opposite of all three is Oklahoma State. You know, when
you talk about offense, they're probably top five in the nation.
They got Nolan Schubert, who that guy's a monster.
Speaker 6 (50:05):
He's six he said some four hundred and forty plus
yard bomb or bomb. Then he's he's just a monster.
But uh, you know, their offense is what leads them.
Speaker 8 (50:16):
Interestingly enough, they they announced to their starting pitcher was
going to be this morning, and it's not a guy
that I actually had penciled in. So they're going to
Hunter Watkins and he's a Grand Canyon Transfer, big boy,
six foot eight.
Speaker 6 (50:31):
He's gonna come down, he'll at you. He had a
two to one record of three eight three e r A.
Speaker 8 (50:37):
You know, it'll be interesting to see what he looks like.
He missed some time in the fall just getting acclimated.
He had some personal stuff going on. But yeah, I
mean it's it's tough. Three games all across the board.
I do like Texas chances though, especially in the first two,
just from an offensive standpoint.
Speaker 6 (50:53):
It gets set pitching.
Speaker 1 (50:54):
We love it. We love it. Baseball season is here
and it is time. So make sure you get over
to Orange Bloods check out Zach's work over there, or
just follow him at Zach at the Dish. As baseball
season is upon us, we'll be talking next week and
we'll have a lot of games that will be under
our belt by then too. Appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (51:15):
Zach, absolutely, sir, thank you.
Speaker 1 (51:17):
All Right, when we come back, we're going to continue
these conversations because guess what All Star Weekend. Yeah, folks,
All Star Weekend is here. My question is do you
even care? We'll talk about it right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the zom
(51:46):
good stuff by Zach saying, get over to Orangebloods dot
com so you can check out the latest and h
I'm sure he'll have something running during that time too,
to let you know what's going on with the game.
Mind you that the game, it is the third game
of the day, so first pitch is supposed to be
at seven. That does not guarantee that the pitch will
be done at seven o'clock. So I mean we'll start
(52:09):
at seven just because of that, So be careful waiting
on that. All right, let's get into this conversation because
it is. You and I were talking during the break,
Khalil about the NBA All Star Weekend. Obviously we didn't
even realize that it was All Star Weekend. We were
looking into it, we were trying to figure it out.
(52:30):
But now that it's here, it's real interesting to me.
Because I don't know any of the people that are participating.
I don't know any of the people that are going
to be a part of some of these pregames, the
Rising Stars, the Celebrity Games. There's just nothing that I
(52:52):
am truly engaged with throughout this time. And you asked me,
you were like, you've watched the NBA All Star Game
the weekend just kind of go downhill, and yeah, I have.
When I you know, back with my day, it was
(53:14):
a lot of fun. The dunk contest was something that
people made appointments to watch. You had. I'll go back
even to Doctor J. When Doctor J was doing it.
He made it cool because Doctor J is a cool dude.
(53:35):
Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, they had Battlespud Webbs was the
novelty of this group. Another guy that people probably don't
even remember unless you are a true old head is
a guy like Terrence Stansbury. He had me flying through
the air. Wasn't getting up that hot, but I was trying.
(53:58):
I was trying to get up there just because of
the fact that dude was good at what he did.
So now you sit and it's so few and far
between of being excited to watch the dunk contest like
it doesn't motivate anybody to do anything different. Like I
(54:24):
have a son that is a basketball player. My older
son played basketball in college, went overseas to play professionally.
We don't even know any of these true up and
coming NBA people because nobody wants to be in the
dunk contest anymore. That's crazy to me. People want to
(54:50):
be more around the celebrity game than they do the
actual game. And speaking of the celebrity game, that will
be All that stuff starts tonight. All that stuff starts tonight.
The Rising Star Game is tonight. The Celebrity All Star
Game is tonight. By the way, it's in Oakland. I'm
sure two Shorts gonna be making an appearance. Got e forty,
(55:12):
all the hip hop stars are gonna be out there.
But check this out. Here's the rosters for the twenty
twenty five Ruffles NBA All Star Celebrity Game. Drewski If
you've been paying attention to him, you know who he is.
Six time nominated singer and writer Shaboozie. Now I've seen
(55:34):
Shaboozy up close. Dude is tall. I don't know if
he can hoop. But dude is tall, so we'll see
what happens. Hall of Famer Terrell Owens is going to
be in it. Basketball skills trainer Chris Brinkley, Olympic Track
and Field go medalist, Massiah Russell Olympic Track and Field
(55:55):
silver medalist, Shelby mclewan, four time Grand I'M nominated Artists
and country music trailblazer Mickey Geiton, Emmy winning actor Ron Flynn,
NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors. Matt Barnes. Matt
Barnes got some issues he got going on Star of
Marvel's Studios, Captain America The New World Order, which I
(56:17):
will be seeing today. Danny Ramirez, WWE Superstar Bailey uh
Oliver Stark of nine to one one. It's just I
don't know. I don't know half of these people, right.
Ky Sinnett, We know who he is because he's all
over the place. Former basketball player and entrepreneur Baron Davis
(56:41):
will be in there. Singer songwriter Walker Hayes will be
in for his second celebrity game, and again who cares?
Who cares? But here's the cool part. The coaches two
Chains will be one of them. Three time Super Bowl Champion,
(57:02):
Jerry Rice, San Francisco Giant and legend and MLB all
time home run hitter Barry Bonds. They will be part
of the coaching staffs. But if you're a Spurs fan,
you're excited about the fact that Big Wimby will be there.
(57:23):
Castle will be in the Dunk Contest. But that's about it, folks.
That's about it. It's just the NBA Game, All Star Game,
All Star Saturday Night, all the stuff that we were
excited about. It's not the same and it hasn't been
the same. They have the Skills Challenge, Spurs Fans. Skills Challenge,
(57:48):
you get Chris Paul and Victor Winbin Yama. You'll also
have the Team Warriors and the Skills Challenge Draymond Green
and Moses Moody. Who is what is Draymond's skill level?
I have no idea. In a three point shootout, you'll
(58:10):
have Jalen Brunson, Kate Cunningham, Darius Garland, Tyler, Hero, Buddy Heald,
Cameron Johnson, Dame Lillard, and Norman Powell. All right now,
this is where y'all are gonna lose it. The Dunk Contest.
Stefan Castle Spurs, Andre Jackson Junior, y'all know who team
(58:36):
he played for. No, the Bucks, Mac McClung. He's still
in the G League, folks. They had to bring up
G League people again to get in the dunk contest,
and Mattias Bozenis of the Bulls will be the fourth participant.
(58:57):
Tell me you're not watching the NBA dunk contests by
telling me you're not watching the NBA Dunk Contest because
there's no body in it. And I've just spent way
too much time talking about the NBA, the Dunk Contest
and the fact of why people are trying to understand
(59:19):
why the ratings are starting to go downhill. When your
superstars are not participating, it makes it very difficult for
people to even care about it. Now, we will talk
about these rosters because there has been some changes in it.
So Shaq and Kenny are going to be coaching these teams.
(59:42):
Shaq's ogs is Lebron, Anthony Davis, who he's not going
to be playing, Steph Curry, Jason Tatum, Dame Lillard, Jaylen Brown,
James Harden, and Kyrie. Kyrie is playing because he's the
replacement for Anthony Davis. An all Star. Then you go
(01:00:05):
to Kenny's Young Stars. You got Anthony Edwards, Jaron Jackson,
Junior Darius Garland, Kay Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, Jaylen Williams, Evan Mobley,
and Tyler Hero. Chuck has a team as well, and
he has Nicola Jokic, Shay Gilchris Alexander, Giannis, Antetakupo. He's
(01:00:29):
not playing Trey Young, who a lot of folks thought
should have been on there. He replaces Giannis, Pascal Siakam,
Victor Winmbin, Yama Segun from the Rockets, Donovan Mitchell, Karl,
Anthony Towns, Charles Barkley. Come on now, he's gonna be
part of this. So all these guys will be participating
(01:00:52):
in the All Star Game, and once again, nobody cares basketball.
You gotta do better get your stars to participate in
all of these events because that is where the fans
want to be. When we come back, we're gonna have
a special conversation about baseball, and I want y'all to
(01:01:16):
hear one of the greatest interviews that was ever done
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred. This is all happy Valentine's Day to all
(01:01:40):
y'all out there. We were just talking about that during
the break. I know a lot of people are celebrating,
and it's an overpriced holiday because all the restaurants mark
up their pricing. It's just like when Texas travels to
any other town, prices go up, and it's kind of
crazy when you start thinking about it. And yes, I
equated it to Texas. But happy Valentine's Day to all
(01:02:02):
of you out there that celebrate that. I wanted to
talk about the Philadelphia Eagles, but more about what New
Orleans is trying to do. Our man Mark Henry gets
a little fired up when it comes to making sure
that all people are at work all the time. And
(01:02:22):
what do I mean by that? He got mad because
Kellen Moore was supposedly going to be going to the
celebration of winning a championship with the Philadelphia Eagles. Well,
the Eagles parade is a little bit later today. It
is seven It was seven am not too long ago
in Philadelphia and there were already people lining up for
(01:02:48):
the celebration of the Philadelphia Eagles winning their championship. That
city has no chance, no chance of surviving at all. Tonight.
It is going to be a mad house during that time.
But I want you to hear from Kellen Moore because
(01:03:10):
Kellen Moore has now taken the job of the head
coach of an NFL team. Think about that. Kellen Moore
is a head coach of an NFL team, former Dallas
Cowboy quarterback turn quarterbacks coach turn oc then he gets
(01:03:31):
his opportunity to be a head coach, and with being
becoming a head coach, he got a lot of responsibility. Well,
one of those responsibilities is trying to figure out what
you're gonna do with your quarterback and what are you
going to do with your prize running back. Alvin Kamar
your Swiss Army knife, if you wild. And he met
(01:03:56):
with the media yesterday and kind of addressed what direction
he thinks that he might be wanting to go.
Speaker 9 (01:04:03):
I viewed as Derek Carr is a tremendous starting quarterback
in this league. We're fortunate to have him and we're
excited to go through this process. You know, as we
built this roster together again, I'm meeting these guys for
the first time the last few days. We're excited to
meet more of them and this will be a lot
of fun. Tons of respect for Alvin as a player.
Obviously one of the premier players in our league. You know,
his ability to play in the past game, in the
(01:04:24):
run game, all the different versatile roles that he can
play a lot of people for a long time and
looking at how can we find an Alvin on our
football team? And so that's been a really important piece.
It will continue to be a really important piece, and
we're really fortunate to have him.
Speaker 1 (01:04:39):
So what do you think is going to happen with
this squad? I mean, it is going to be a
not a trial and error type of deal, but it
is going to be something that he's going to be
judged by moving forward. Their roster. They got some talent there.
(01:05:00):
I like what they've got Chris Olave at the wide
receiver spot. He's been very instrumental in helping those quarterbacks. Defensively,
they've been solid as well. They just need leadership. So
if you're a Saints fan, do you believe in Kellen
Moore or do you see that this team needs to
(01:05:24):
change up some more? Hahuh? The plan word change up
some more within that roster. That roster has talent. You know,
you start looking around and looking at all of the
different speed guys that you have, your secondary guys that
you have. You still have your guy what's my man's name,
(01:05:46):
Taysom Hill coming back from injury. There's a lot that
is there, but the quarterback position is the main one
that you need to look into. So we'll see what
ends up happening. I will be paying attention to see
if we get a picture of Kellen Moore at the
celebration as his team that he used to coach wins
(01:06:12):
their envy. I mean, Whens get their Super Bowl celebration.
I saw a video the other day of them trying
on rings, already getting size for their rings, so that
should be fun to see. Now, I want to tell
you a story about a former picture for Virginia. He
is awesome as an individual. I interviewed this guy before.
(01:06:37):
He is funny, he's thoughtful, and he has he has
a way of presenting certain things. His name is Stephen shop.
He is He has a radio show, a podcast called
Backyard Bull Dup Bullpod. He is hilarious and I want
(01:07:01):
you to hear his interview that he had in one
of his regionals because his team Virginia at the time.
I believe that they went on to win the World Series,
and it was an outstanding interview.
Speaker 10 (01:07:17):
You know, you walk into a stadium in eight thousand people,
they all want you to lose. But as long as
you got your twenty six guys ready to kick a
or kick butt?
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
What are the emotions like entering that? Inny Well, emotions
are you go in win?
Speaker 10 (01:07:35):
I heard a fan off for free dippin' dots if
I blew it, which the price of dippin' dots with
inflation is just unreal.
Speaker 1 (01:07:42):
So for a brief.
Speaker 10 (01:07:44):
Moment, I was like, Damn, dippin' dots sound good. But
also I thought, in the back of my head, we
win today, we win to mak or tonight, we're gonna
be here another day. That's more per diem So that
means I can buy my own dippin' dots and be
a winner. So it's like, you know, I'm gonna go
out there, I'm gonna act. I think three words every
time I'm out there. The first ones I swear words
(01:08:04):
starts with f second words attack, third ones win and
I just repeat that to myself. Unless you know there's
a breach in the system and awakee guy, And I
gotta tell myself I'm a few different things. That isn't
a winner. I might break that, but then I forget
right back on it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
Just this attack win, you know.
Speaker 10 (01:08:25):
And Steve, it's really easy pitching when you got defense
like ours. I tell you it's so easy when when
they're behind you. As long as you keep playing in
the yard, you got a chance, which is pretty cool.
Speaker 6 (01:08:38):
Does anything make you nervous.
Speaker 1 (01:08:42):
Cave?
Speaker 10 (01:08:45):
Mainly nothing, really. I mean, I don't see any k's
out here. I know we're in the south. If it's
not the desert, that's where I find most k's are, probably,
But you know, this is just a game. There's gonna
be way harder things in life than striking out the
side or not walking somebody.
Speaker 1 (01:09:05):
So I don't really get too caught up.
Speaker 10 (01:09:07):
In all the jibber jabber and all the mean things
people might say to me, because it's just, you know,
I think I'm a cool guy. My dogs think I'm awesome,
my teammates like me, and my friends like me. So
I'm gonna attack. I'm gonna win. Simple.
Speaker 6 (01:09:23):
Here's one last one for you. Yeah, no problem, you've
heard this before.
Speaker 8 (01:09:26):
Yeah, when people say, Kenny Powers, what do you think
I think?
Speaker 10 (01:09:30):
Damn, I'm doing a good job because, like I said,
the dude took eighty six to the big leagues after
being out of the big leaes. You kidding me?
Speaker 11 (01:09:41):
You kidding me.
Speaker 10 (01:09:42):
He took that and turned it into a winner. So
people are like, oh, Kenny Pounders. I'm like, I mean,
I might throw a little differently, a little little firmer
than he did after you know, he started boozing and
doting drugs, But I mean that probably won't be a
big part of my life as it was his. But hey,
it's Kenny p He's a winner.
Speaker 1 (01:10:03):
Unbelievable, one of the funniest dudes that I've ever been around.
And he is genuinely like that. And it wasn't just
an act. It was something that he really truly believed in.
And he's gonna be part of telecast. You're gonna end
up seeing him. If you love anything about baseball, He's
(01:10:26):
the guy that you would definitely want to kick it
with funny, funny times. I wanted to ask you this, Khalil,
because you have opportunities to be a part of this stuff.
You've seen different things. Is there somebody that you have
(01:10:47):
been around that just constantly has you laughing.
Speaker 12 (01:10:54):
See constantly a sport a guy or a girl in
an athlete, but you've seen that, You're like, man, every
time I see that dude got our girl has me
cracking out.
Speaker 1 (01:11:08):
I would have to say.
Speaker 11 (01:11:11):
I would probably have to go with like a baseball
Oh you know who had me rolling?
Speaker 1 (01:11:15):
Leonard Fournette's good.
Speaker 11 (01:11:18):
Leonard Fournette was, I'm sorry man, if you're if you're
getting tackled hard and you get up and you start
laughing at like, you know, you're just having a good time.
I thought that was hilarious. And so that's that's my
type of humor. You don't really need to need to
tell jokes. It's more just like who you are as
a person and your mannerism.
Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
Giving love to somebody that just blasted you. Yeah him,
yeah him.
Speaker 11 (01:11:43):
And then Gary Payton Junior for the Warriors is he's quiet,
Like on camera he appears to be quiet, but he's
actually very hilarious.
Speaker 1 (01:11:52):
He talks a lot of trash. Yes, like he gets
it from his daddy. That makes sense, he gets it
from his daddy. Yeah. Those two guys and another group
of guys that are pretty dog on funny is Shaq
and Kenny and Charles Barkley when they're going at it.
Shack dropped an F bomb yesterday and basically he said,
(01:12:13):
we're getting fired anyway to end the segment, and this
was heading into All Star weekend because they're obviously ending
the series with these guys on TNT. So it's been
There's been some moments where people have kind of gone
the other way, but it is what it is. When
(01:12:35):
we come back, we'll close out the show and send
you to Dan Patrick busy weekend for a lot of
Texas athletics this weekend, and we'll talk about it and
tell you where you can hear it all right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
the zoone.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
Three point one, Boston's eighty station.
Speaker 3 (01:12:56):

to the podcast page. On the new and improved iHeartRadio app,

out and do what you want to do, listening to
what you want to listen to. And being Valentine's Day,
you might have wanted to put on a love station.
That's right, a love station for Valentine's Day. I also
(01:13:47):
want to give you an opportunity to win a pair
of tickets to go see the Deftones March the twelfth,
and you can get a chance to win by using
the red microphone on the iHeart app leave a message

keyword and everything goes right, you might be able to
give that for your Valentine's a pair of tickets to
go see Deftones March the twelfth at the Moody Center.
(01:14:11):
Get a chance to win by having the word pony.
Pony is your word of the day. Pony waves was yesterday,
Pony today. This weekend is going to be a busy
weekend with everyone on the forty Acres Texas Baseball starts
It's season tonight and you can hear it right here
(01:14:32):
on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. As a matter of fact,
you can hear all Texas baseball games this weekend on
AM thirteen hundred, The Zone is scheduled to start at
seven o'clock. Not sure. Texas will be playing the third
game of the day, and if you know anything about baseball,
it might run a little bit long, So get over
(01:14:53):
there and listen to it right here on AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. This weekend, the Texas men will take
on content. Kentucky is looking to be one of the
better teams in the SEC. And what I mean by
that is they still getting a lot of talent. They
got a new coaching staff, but they come in and
play hard. That will be played at the Moody Center.
(01:15:15):
That will be a seven o'clock on ESPN, or you
can listen to it on ninety eight point one KVEB.
And then on Sunday, the biggest game of the weekend,
Texas volleyball, I mean Texas women's basketball will take on
LSU two pm at the mood Pack the house. Be
ready to go. This Texas women's basketball team is playing
(01:15:38):
at an elite level right now and if you can't
make it out, the game will be played on ABC.
Think about that. Think about that. The number two team,
Texas Longhorn or three team Texas Longhorns will take on
the number five team LSU Tigers and one of the
biggest SEC matchups there he is. It will be on
(01:16:01):
national television, big crowds, big noise, and Kim Moulky going
up against Vic Schaeffer. Now, when Vic Shaffer first got
to the University of Texas, it was doing to a transition.
Vic came in, took things over and has flipped this
program to new heights Texas since at twenty five and two,
(01:16:25):
eleven and one in conference, they've won nine games in
a row. Madison Booker has put up big time numbers,
national player of the Year type numbers, and she continues
to do it week in and week out against the
best competition. If you missed this earlier, Madison Booker's last
(01:16:48):
five games versus ranked opponents twenty eight four and three
against number eight Maryland twenty six I mean yeah, twenty six,
six and two against number seventeen Tennessee twenty six and
four against Vanderbilt who was ranked twenty four. Against South Carolina,
(01:17:10):
the number two ranked team in the country, Texas Madison
Booker went twenty eleven and three, and then last night
they went nineteen eight and four. This is some big
time basketball being played. And if you have not went
out there, you still got time. But get yourself a
(01:17:31):
ticket for Saturday, I mean Sunday's game, because it is
going to be amazing. I'm excited about it. I will
be in the house because I just love watching good basketball.
And what bigger impact than these two coaches, Vick Schaeffer
and Kim Moky. And I already know many people hate
(01:17:51):
Kim Moky, but you know one thing she can do.
She can coach in her teams play hard, and they
will come in to this arena ready to go because
they know exactly what's happened with Texas. They know that
they've been playing really good basketball. They've seen it, They've
watched the process of what's going on. That's why I'm
(01:18:15):
really excited about this weekend. Also, Texas women's softball, they
have a big tournament this weekend at home. All the
games is called the Bevo Classic. They're the number one
team in the country. They are ten to zero. And
think about that big time softball being played, baseball being played,
(01:18:37):
basketball being played all on the forty acres. Enjoy your weekend.
Enjoy your Valentine's Day will be better On Monday, make
sure you tune in as we recap everything that went
down this weekend, and just remember this, don't believe everything
you see, because even salt looks like sugar. Peace,
