Speaker 1 (02:43):
Yep, We're not gonna be done until the end of February.
And I cannot wow. We got football, football, football, and
you know during the week they're gonna have games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
We got every since.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Song Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday. Ye you skip Thursday, Friday. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
you just skipped the vacations.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Let's get right into it.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
We've talked a lot about this Texas football team, obviously,
as we get closer and closer. We are your home
for Texas football. You can listen to it on the
iHeartRadio app. You can listen to it right here on
AM thirteen hundred the Zone, and you can also listen
to the pregame show with us that will be starting
August thirtieth.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
You'll hear myself, Cam Parker and.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Of course, yeah, the crew will be back together, but
we have the voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way,
that you can always check out as well.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
He'll be on from two to five today.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
But I wanted to get into this conversation because we
talked a lot about the Texas defense and what's going
on with the Texas defense, and one of the biggest
stories that is being talked about right now is the
experience that is lost on that defense, and I'm talking
about jah Day Barn. Jahday Barn was a huge, huge
(04:00):
part of the success of this Texas program. And one
of the things about Ja Day that he continued to
do was being able to play multiple positions before he
moved all the way over to play corner and then
eventually being the Jim Thorpe Award winner.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Right he was fine, he can go wherever the best
wide receiver went.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Absolutely, and now we're in a point where Jalen Gilbo,
who is uber athletic that we have seen play position
after position in the secondary kind of in that that
mindset of a Ja Day Bearn. He is now moving
to the corner position. And he talked about this last
(04:44):
week about the move to the corner position.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
I honestly say, I feel like corner is more easy
to nickel because and nickel, you know, they got a
two way go. So I feel like corner, you got
a better advantage and you can use the sideline.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
So I say, that's that's an advantage.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
At the same transition, did you talk to him at
all about moon from ny cold up to the outside
and when you see him you don't get drafted up there? Oh?
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Yes, you liked that, you know, I would say, I
talk to him all the time.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
That's that's my brother. So I talked to him.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
I called him and asked him, like, what did you
do at corner like that I can do and you
know what I mean, that they can.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Give me at that standard that you was at.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
So he was basically to me, like, go to outside
and show him that you can cover, you know what
I mean?
Speaker 3 (05:25):
And that's and that's they want to see with him.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
So I'll say, I'm just so I'm just doing the
same thing, just going to corner and shut the scouts that.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
I can cover. That's what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Being able to adjust, being able to do those types
of things, and becoming that type of player to show
your versatility because they can move you around and have
you play wherever you want to play right, and he
now that he's playing outside, he can use the sideline
and play a more physical type of game when guys
get you allowed that wide receiver to make contact with
(05:55):
you first, and then you retaliate and try to put
him out of the off the sideline. Yeah, he's a
physical corner six foot one eighty three.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Uh. This is his third year.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
He's from Papa I keep yelling it from Port Arthur.
And he is a guy that every season he did
something different and you were like, man with a name
like Gilbo. Of course, yeah, you got he was that
type of guy that you looked at and you're like, man,
if he can get on the field, because he dealt
(06:27):
with some injuries early, he was trying to find his way.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
There was a lot of talent in front of him.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
But now he seems to be that guy that's on
the outside that's ready to make some plays. And we
got a new corners back coach, mark O Fay or
excuse me or Fay and he is confident in what
he's seeing from Gilbo.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
When he's made that move, and Gilbo's.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Transition a little to the outside.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
It's been good. I always thought he was an outside guy.
I think it's hard to play an inside the outside,
so having him outside has been really good.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
I think he's.
Speaker 6 (07:03):
Gonna, he's gonna, he's gonna be fine. And I know
there was something that was important to him just in
terms of being his last year and being able to
show that he can do more. And I'm all, I'm
all for it. And I'm all for it too. I
think he he is going. I told you before I
look at him. Uh Jolannie McDonald what Malik Muhammad is up.
(07:28):
He's on the thorpe for watch list right now too,
and Michael Taff as well, and Michael Taff in the
back end.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
This is going to be a team that it's gonna
be tough to get yards again. It's gonna be tough
in that secondary too. I haven't even mentioned my guy
Derek Williams.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah, that's what I was about to say. Derek should
be in that conversation too, for sure, because he will
take your face mass off.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
And he is getting back to being that guy again.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
All of those guys can tackle, all of those all
those guys will hit you too. You know, that's something
that is kind of rare. Normally you have a couple
of cover guys and then you have one or two thumpers,
Like they got like four guys that will thump you right,
and then one that's kind of versatile Muhammad. He'll tackle you,
(08:17):
but he's not gonna come up and like try to
erase your memory tab. Every play he trying to trying
to give you CDE.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Every play he's trying to figure out if he's gonna
be ejected or not.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Hey, that's scary too.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
But with the way that all of these guys can
play multiple positions, if somebody does get a targeting, I'm
not worried because there's another guy that can come and
fill that spot.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
There's some guys that are going to make a lot
of noise coming into this season, and like I said,
I can't wait to see what's going to happen. But
coach Sark was asked about the secondary and the playing
for the secondary and how he feels is going right now.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Yeah, I mean I'm not in the rush. Truth be told,
We've got time, you know, I think twenty four more
practices to go something crazy. I don't know that's a
that's an eternity in my world. You know, I need
versatility there. I need versatility in our secondary. I love
the fact that man guys are playing multiple positions right
(09:21):
now for us, you know, because predicated on how we
want to play certain calls with certain guys on the
field that might be based on that, and some different
guys are going to play. It might be, you know,
what's the best matchup for that week, and our defensive
staff will figure that out of who their personnel is
and what that looks like it might be held PK
wants to call it that week, and so we need
(09:43):
all that versatility that we can get along with.
Speaker 7 (09:46):
The development of our players as we go.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
But we got a lot of really cool options and
that part I'm definitely excited about.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
I mean, he just said the versatility. We've talked about,
the cross training on the offensive line. We talked about
the depth that they have shown throughout recruiting. That's the
one thing that they continue to try to do. And
he said something I told you about this the other
day on war Richardson said, if you of Orange Bloods,
that's my guy. He said, if you are coming to
(10:16):
the University of Texas, and thinking that, Okay, I'm on
the team. I'm about to go out here and play.
You got to look in that locker room because everybody's
trying to play everybody. It's iron sharpening iron, and it's
not one of those things where you just walk in
and I'm the guy. No, No, there's a lot of
I'm the guys on this team. How do we leave
out John Williams? Well, because Jonas, I.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Know he's a freshman, but there's there's mutants sometimes that
you recruit.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
He is one of those.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
He went into baseball hard, as you know, because you
got to see him up close and personal, and he
did not play like he was a freshman, did he No,
I got to see him in football. Can lean into
his toughness in football. I think it's gonna be just
the same every nine. And then you find a guy
that as a freshman gets to start, Adrian Peterson. You know,
(11:10):
they just physically more adept to doing what they do.
And I think that Janan is one of those. In
the secondary, Shoda is definitely one of those. And Derek
Williams was a guy too. He came in at the
summertime and ended up playing a lot of minutes for
the University of Texas because he was that talented.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
We're just getting started on a throwback Thursday edition of
The Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
one hundred the Zone.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
When we come back, we'll hear from coach Start.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Seven thirty four. We have our guy Eric Henry of
hores in the NFL is banning smelling sauces. Huh, let's
talk about it right here on the Morning kick Off
Sports Radio and thirteen.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Hundred de Zone.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Coming up in the next segment, we'll have our guy
Eric Henry of Horse two four seven joining us to
talk all things text his long horns. He also got
a chance to talk to Sean Miller the other day,
so I want.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
To see how that went.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Oh wow, Well, we are twenty three days away from
Texas and Ohio State. We are Lee Jackson days away
from the big Man, Jack Brown.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Greg Brown was twenty four four. Greg Brown was twenty
four But I told you I got hit in the
head a lot. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Sean Miller is the coach basketball coach at University of Texas.
By the way, what did I say, Oh no, you
you prefacedly said his name. But I was just telling
the people out there that didn't know that he was
a basketball coach.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Don't say that Sean Miller, the basketball coach. He got
a chance to sit with the basketball coach, Saan Miller.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Maybe yeah, maybe pet your head falls on, Maybe maybe
the hot.
Speaker 8 (12:53):
Maybe Mark a little bit, a little bit of that
smelling sauce he got done.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
Hold on sake, let me hit my, Let me hit
my smelling sauce, Mark, Mark to do smelling salt, to
come and do the shop. That's what I asked about. Man,
what in.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
The listen, I'm under the weather. I'm in here. I'm sacrificing.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
First off, don't tell people that you under the weather
and you coming in here in case somebody gets sick.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Well white everything. Man, I'm talking about us. I'm talking
about me.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
And care about y'all. I like, wait a minute. Mark
walked into the studio today, and the first thing I.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Said to listen to him over there, about to give
up a lung over there. First thing Mark walked in
the studio, We got the doors open and everything.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
We're like, hey man, you good.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
We didn't want none of the smoke today. We did
not want any of the smoke.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Sitting here sounded like, wheezy man, take your vitamin see
man and call it today. Mother told me yesterday after
the show, Hey, you need to go get some incognasia.
I'm like, you need to get it. I'm taking it.
I'm taking it. I'm like, I'm good, bro, I'm just
trying to get out to five. I'm done with you.
(14:07):
Let's get into this conversation because, as I said before, we.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Got a chance to talk to coach Sark on Tuesday.
The players had the day off yesterday. They are back
on the field this morning and we'll get some more information.
But during training camps, and you've heard this from coach Schottenheimer,
You've heard it from coach Demiico Ryans, you hear from
coaches all over the place. Most of the time, the
(14:34):
defense is ahead of the offense at this time of
the year. And you think about Texas's defense and where
they are, you think about we just talked about the
secondary and how Sark is trying to piece that together.
So Sark was asked that the coaches availability the other
day about who do you think is winning right now?
Speaker 3 (14:54):
If you had to pick, is it the offense is
at the defense?
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Because people really want to know because they're all the
hype is arch many arch Manny has Arch picking away.
Part of our defense is arch doing this? Is arch
doing that well? Coach Sark says, sometimes the defense is
ahead of the offense.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Yeah, I would say this historically for me, Surely your
defense better be ahead of your offense, and we are.
I think our defense is playing really good right now.
The best teams I've ever been on, the defense usually
is kind of ahead. From that perspective. On an offensive standpoint,
not that the offense isn't doing some really good things.
Speaker 7 (15:30):
I mean, I think the second player team run today.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
I think Trey Wisener snapped off about a fifty sixty
yard run, which.
Speaker 7 (15:36):
Was great to see.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
I don't love that because I want our defense to
be so dominant that it makes it so hard on
our offense to do what they want to do. But
we're doing good enough stuff. But I think offensive we
can play better. The key on offensive football is it
takes all eleven. You know, you have one guy have
a breakdown at left guard, that's a sack. We may
have guys running wide open down the field. On defense,
(15:59):
the three take nique might go the wrong way, but
the end can make the tackle and nobody notices the
three technique make that mistake. And so you know, we're
fighting for consistency on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
But I think.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
Really the consistency is paramount on the offensive side of
the ball, where that's what we've got to keep pushing
these guys towards. And then, like I touched on, we
can't harbor the negative plays like this, like it's over,
it's not the.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
End of the world. It's okay.
Speaker 5 (16:24):
You know, we're gonna we're gonna have seventy seventy five
snaps a game, like, let's get on to the next play,
let's keep playing. And so I think there's some there's
some mental toughness that that we got to keep working
on on that aspect that we'll get to. But I
would say our defense is ahead of our offense. And
I'm okay with that. I'm okay with that.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
Now you got to you gotta start going on offense.
We got to pick it up and play with a
little better consistency than we have.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
I mean, that's what always happens, that's how it always
plays out, that's how the conversation always goes. Early in
the season, defense is playing better the scrimmages. And you
got to remember too, this is in an ordinary defense.
This is one that we expect a lot of great
things from moving forward.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
And if you have success against this defense in practice,
then you should be able to hand some people their hats,
because at every facet of the defense they're strong, right,
I mean from the upgrading of the defensive line to
having the outside linebackers and inside linebackers be so dominant,
(17:31):
and the secondary that we've been talking about, how much
depth and how strong all of those guys are in
the sense that they have such versatility, like this defense
can be better than last year's defense.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Oh, I have no doubt about that.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
I think for a while this defense is going to
get a lot of the publicity. I firmly believe that
when you look at the two deep and sometimes three
deep of who's gonna be coming in and out, and
you start to look at the positions where the most
depth is and the most talent. You know, you mentioned
(18:09):
the fact of Jonah Williams. You forgot about Xavier Philosami.
He's in the back.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
He's a guy that is super talented We've got a
young freshman and Grayson Lyttleton who has been already in
the starting lineup because of what he's been able to do.
You've seen reports of Kobe Black and how he's been playing.
You know, Texas in the back end is gonna be tough.
You got Trey Moore playing that week side linebacker.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
You knew that though.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
You knew that death because teams are gonna try to
throw the ball down the field, so they're gonna run
routes to get those guys tired. The thing about Texas, though,
you have less time because you have rushers that are
gonna be able to get into the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
So I see a lot.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Of these guys being able to make plays because of
the pressure that's gonna be put on the quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Yeah, it's going to be an interesting game against Ohio
State because I was asked yesterday. I was talking to
Nathan Vasher yesterday and former Texas Longhorn dB will have
his thirty one on there, his three on there as well.
But you know, the conversation was about what are you
(19:25):
looking for? And the one thing that he talked about
was physicality. This is a Texas football team that prides
itself on being physical now and so that was something
too that I'm like, Okay, let's get into it. Let's
see what happens when you do have to go out
there and play a team that kind of you owe
them something, You owe them something from last year.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
And another thing that these.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Young players have the ability to understand as a guy
that Nathan Vasher played for Dwayne a Keina in that
secondary and learned how to play man the man and
be physical at the point of contact, at the point
of the line of scrimmage. And Coach Shark was asked,
do some of these young players know who Akeena was
or is the Godfather?
Speaker 3 (20:12):
And Coach was like, come on now, well.
Speaker 7 (20:14):
I think it's it's uh. I think they're they're pretty good,
you know.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
I mean, remember they played for Blake Gideon and so
there's a lot of Duayne a Keina and Blake Blake Gideon,
and so I think they got exposed to a little
of that. And I think Blake talked about the history
of the DBS here obviously having Michael Huff in the
building and and and just his kind of knowledge and
history based on us.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
I think they're they're very aware of it all.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
And you guys know, you guys know Coach Akeena, he's
not short on storytelling either.
Speaker 7 (20:44):
So I'm sure they've got to have stories uh that.
Speaker 5 (20:46):
Uh that they've They've got a pretty good understanding of
the history and tradition of this place.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
All right, here's something that I really wanted to get into.
Come on that defensive line. You know, we talked a
little bit about it yesterday or to day days ago,
talking about Brevard and some of these other players that
are there. We haven't mentioned Marad Watson, who is is
a huge transfer from Syracuse, somebody that is going to
(21:13):
do something big time. Travis Shaw another one of those
transfers that has come in. And Coach Shark was asked
about the defensive line and has he seen any separation
at this point with this defensive line where we're.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
At now, a lot of these guys probably would have
been able to spell those guys more than last year
than we were able to last year.
Speaker 7 (21:38):
I think that's probably the difference.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
You know, you know, some of those guys if they
were on our team last season, Vernon and Alfred might
not have played, have to have played as many snaps
as they did.
Speaker 7 (21:48):
A year ago. That's what my goal was coming into
the season.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
Could we develop that room into where, you know, we
could play at a lot of players, a lot of
people so that the over time that wear and tear
wouldn't take its toll on us.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
And I think we've done that.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
You know, he will shoot and went out and got
five transferred defensive linemen. You know, then we signed a
really good D line class of three players there. So
I think we're in good shape to have the rotation
that we're looking for. And that's not nowhere near solidified
right now, but man, I'm sure the bodies that are
gonna help us be able to do that.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
I love it, love the fact that they have the
bodies to be able to do that. Coming up next,
we've got our guy Eric Henry of Horns two four
seven joining us in just a moment to talk all
things Texas Long Horns. Also men's and women's basketball have
their schedules for the season.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
Eric is all over that as well.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Right here on a throwback Thursday edition of the Morning
Kickoff on Sports Radio A thirteen hundred design. It's Thursday,
even though he was in all week last week.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
But you know, this is his time, this is his era.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
Right here on the morning kickoff, we are joined by
our guy Eric Henry of Horns too. Oh been a busy,
busy man. And first off, thank you for sitting in
for me last week. Man, it looks like y'all had
a great time and I appreciate you being able to
do that.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
But let's get right into it.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Texas football twenty three days away from the kickoff at
the Horseshoe in Columbus, and it seems like we're getting
to the point now where things are starting to really
heat up because we're getting closer and closer to that
ball game.
Speaker 9 (23:31):
Yeah, first offs always, good morning. Appreciate y'all have me
on HARJ and Mark. I appreciate y'all allow me to
sit in with you guys last week. And yet getting
right to brass tacks when we talk about Texas.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Football, things are starting to heat up.
Speaker 9 (23:43):
I think at this point, with the team being in
pads this week, you're trying to accomplish a couple of things.
One you're really trying to see, you know, who has
taken the ball, you know, taking the bull by the
horns and is progressing from that offseason summer conditioning, right,
who is ready to translate that over to when the
pads are on the ball is live. Secondly, you're looking
(24:05):
to build that death right I think, and we've talked
about this a lot, the talent on the roster. You
talk about losing double digit players of the NFL the
last two years. I'm not saying that Texas isn't a
deep and talented football team. I do think they are. However,
you do have to use Steve Sarkesian's word inexperience at
certain spots, right, So you're looking to get those guys
(24:26):
who are inexperience, get them valuable reps. I think with
and this kind of trends into my third thing, you
want to keep the team healthy. You've already seen Andre
Kojo go down with an injury for the year.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
So now when you do have.
Speaker 9 (24:39):
Set inexperience on the offensive line, you're looking at an
offensive line where the only upper classmen reserve is a
guy like Connor Robertson.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Again, no reason a panic.
Speaker 9 (24:49):
You feel you've recruited well at these positions, but you
got to get guys up to speak him up ready
to go for August thirty.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
So the funny thing to me is you you became
a viral moment.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
The other when he talks to a coach about getting
into transfer portal and he talked about he can get
one at the co op. He got a better chance
of getting one at the co op than he does
at the portal at portal at this point. But it's
interesting and it was kind of funny. But it's interesting
because that is the one position that he has not
gone into the transfer portal for is offensive lineman, which
(25:23):
is really interesting when you sit back and think about it.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
It's funny hard.
Speaker 9 (25:28):
The issue with me not being a ut grind is
I had to turn to Set Golden and be like, hey,
what's the co op? I kind of want to, but
I had to ask said what the co op was?
But to your question, you know what's interesting, right? I mean, listen,
Steve Flattlesh shot it down and I'm going to give
you from a you.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Know, from a player's perspective, right.
Speaker 9 (25:46):
I appreciate that answer because if you're an underclassman on
the roster, or a guy like a Connor Robertson or
or a Jayden Chapmansbur at the program a couple of years,
you want your coach to have faith in you. Right,
it shouldn't be. Hey, we have one injury and all
of a sudden we got to turn to the portal.
You have faith in the guys who are here, and
yes to your point, Harje Texas, Steve Sarkisian, Kyle Flood
(26:08):
have been very hesitant to go to the portal for
an offensive lineman. And I do understand Steve's perspective. Right
with you know, two and a half, three weeks till kickoff,
there's probably more value in getting some of these young
guys reps against Sam Houston, State, a UTEP, et cetera,
guys who have been in your program, as opposed to
(26:28):
trying to get someone off the street, get him to
learn your playbook and what you're trying to do, and then.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Insert of them that in that space. So I do
understand his answer.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
He also that offensive line is predicated on knowing all
the calls and being in this program for a while
to understand it. Because it is a complicated system. You
can't just bring somebody in from another program, another system
and have them Steve Steve equated it to learning learning
(27:00):
in French, like now you got to come from another program,
and go and learn French in one year. Like, how
about give the guys like two or three years to
really get it and when it's your opportunity, then you
take it.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
But I don't.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
I just want people to kind of temper that expectation
of bringing other offensive lineman into a complicated sys.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (27:25):
I mean, listen, Mark, We've talked about it at the time.
I've talked with you last week. Right, I think offensive
line and quarterback are two spots that if you're going
to portal it, right, it's hard when you've had two
three four position coaches telling you how to do one thing,
do something one way, and then another coach shows you
do it another way, right, So you can't have so
many voices in your head. The only thing that would
(27:45):
I would push back on a little bit with what
Steve's answer is this, Right, So you brought in Velton
Gardner last year. Granted we're talking about running back, right,
and you know, if you really want to get in
the weeds here running back, when you lose two running backs,
you're not only losing guys you're going to carry the ball,
You're losing guys on special teams right to the trickle
down effect.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
So that's why it's like, all right, we need this
body on scout team.
Speaker 9 (28:04):
You know exactly you're losing this extra body so we
don't have to use a quin Trayvon Wisner for example,
on special teams and the trickle down effect. But you
still brought in someone nine days before the season, right.
I do believe if there were a break glass and
crease of in case of emergency scenario, if there were
a linemen who had started you know, five, six, seven
(28:26):
games at the FBS level, you could bring them in
and then slowly work them in.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
No one's saying you're expecting someone to start right like.
To to be clear, that's not that that was not
the question. It was a death perspective. But I do
understand Steve Sarkisan's point of viither.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
I know it's football season, but we're gonna transition to basketball.
You got a chance to talk to coach Sean Miller
the other day, and they are moving in the right direction.
I mean, it's a totally different squad pretty much. There's
only a couple of players that were here from last
year that I got significant minutes. What was your biggest
takeaway from your meeting with coach Miller.
Speaker 9 (29:01):
You know what, harje, I will stand by this, right,
Sean Miller. And this is no shade on Rodney Terry, right.
But Sean Miller has a proven track record of winning,
and I think you hear the confidence in his voice
when he lays out his plan. What stood out to
me and I guess I should hit you know the
most pertinent notes. Let's do injury up bates real quick,
(29:23):
tremon Mark and Lasina Treo or the transfer from Xavier
Long Beach State and tremon Mark returned from last year.
Both those guys are about three four weeks out from
being cleared for full contact, so I should start there.
But the biggest takeaway for me, Harge, was I asked
him flat, flat out. Hey, Crystal Conte says, the expectations
of Texas are to win national championships with all due respect,
(29:46):
in my lifetime, I'm thirty four, Texas has only made
five Elite eights over that time period, right, and have
been big gaps in between them making those Elite eights.
In your perspective, Sean, what is what are the standard
here a Texas? And he believes it is to win
a national championship. But this part of his answer was
fascinating guys. He said, winning a national championship in basketball,
(30:08):
he believes is the hardest thing to do in college
sports because the amount of teams trying to compete for one,
and the amount of teams and schools that don't have
football where all their resources in basketball. Villanova, Creighton, Saint
John's you know you can run down right, that they're pushing,
and his answer to kind of cap the answer. To
(30:30):
end the answer, he said, if you're getting to sweet
sixteens and getting to elite eights, you've at least put
yourself in the actual tournament, right, not the round of
sixty four, not the round to thirty two. You get
down to sixteen to eight, then you have a chance,
And that to me says all right. The goal is
we need to at least be a consistent Sweet sixteen
contender and then from there, if we have the right mix,
(30:52):
we can close this thing off. And I think that
is a real excuse me, realistic expectation for Texas back.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
What more, did he did he give you any insight
about the resources?
Speaker 9 (31:07):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (31:08):
We didn't.
Speaker 9 (31:08):
We didn't dive into into resources at that point. But
as you know Mark, I've certainly questioned him and questioned
Crystal Contio on that, but we didn't dive into resources.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
Yeah, and you know how that gets down. You know
exactly how that get down.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
There's our guy, Eric Henry of Hornes two four seven.
Make sure you follow him on social media at Eric
c Henry Underscore and of course check out all his
latest at Horns two four seven.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
He as always man. Appreciate you, brother. Here're Tom Fellows.
Thank you. All right, when we come.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Back, we're gonna close out our number one.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
The nf of L has made some moves. One of
them has been in smelling socks. Mark uses him when
he comes to the show. And of course Roger Goodell's
doing some other things that might affect college sports.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Huh.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone, great stuff by Eric Henry of
Horns two four seven, always breaking it down. I want
to thank you for sitting that for me last week.
We are off and rolling.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Coming up at the top of the hour, we're going
to talk about arch Manning.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
Arch Manning continues to be in the news and we
will talk about it. But right now I want to
give you a chance to win a pair of tickets
to go see Pantera September the second at the Germania
Insurance Amphitheater. All you got to do is get over
to that always free iHeartRadio app search and thirteen hundred
to zone, tap third red microphone and leave the word
(32:32):
dime Dime is the word of the day for a
chance to win a para ticket to go see Pantera
September the second at the Germania Insurance Amphi Theater. Be
listening all week long as we'll give you another opportunity
to win a pair of tickets tomorrow. Also make sure
you tune into the Voice of the Texas Longhorns right
here on your home for the Texas Longhorns Craig Way
(32:56):
and Camp Parker this afternoon from two to five Monday
through Friday, as they give you an opportunity to win
and give you the latest. Speaking of the latest, the
news that have come out yesterday was about ESPN and
the NFL getting together to make some things happen, and
(33:17):
Roger Goodell spoke with Hannah Storm yesterday.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
Well, one of the.
Speaker 10 (33:21):
Most popular elements of NFL programming has been red Zone.
It's a staple for NFL fans, What is that going
to look like now under this new partnership.
Speaker 11 (33:33):
Well, that'll actually stay the same. It will continue to
be produced right here in this building. It will be
the NFL red Zone. I don't think fans will see
any difference to that. Obviously in the context of that though,
ESPN purchased the red zone name and they will be
able to utilize that for other sports college football and
(33:55):
other things. And I think that could be an exciting
thing for our fans also to see of red zone
maybe in college football or other sports. That's something that
they now own and have the ability to do that.
But as far as red zone, NFL red Zone, there
won't be any changes for our fans.
Speaker 10 (34:12):
Well, it's an absolute staple. That's good news. And expanding
that that's pretty fascinating.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
I love the fact of a college red zone that'll
be so live. Think ABOUTPN is balling, man, they've been
in that cash. They got to deal with the WWE
do live events. Yes, in WrestleMania, wrestle Mania Live, Like
what y'all they're not.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Playing ESPN trying to take over the world.
Speaker 8 (34:40):
The insaneness of red zone on the NFL with college
it's going.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
To be way crazy. Yeah, it's so many games. They
may just have to do the top twenty five.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
No, they need to do top twenty five teams. That's
that's not well. I mean they're all playing at the
same time, But that's true. You know what I'm saying.
It's not going to be one of those deals. But
the fact that you have access to that is something
to pay attention to because I think it'll be an
integral part and you might be the birth of a
new Scott Hansen or whatever the dude's name is for frenze. Yeah,
(35:16):
oh boy, oh boy. It might be something that somebody
else can get kind of evolve and become a star
on the college level. So it gives somebody an opportunity
to do that.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
Think about all the people that's going to try to
get that job though.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Right, That's what I'm talking about.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
This gives you an opportunity to blow up and have
your own little niche on what you do. Also, speaking
of that, I wanted to get into this Smelling salt
deal man, because I know you use it to do
the show every day, so I appreciate you coming in
to get getting cracked on. But my question to you
(35:57):
is this, man, the NFL is banded. Now players can
bring their own You can bring your own, okay, it
just can't be distributed by the team anymore. So I'm
just curious to I'm fine with that.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
I don't care.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
I think that that puts the liability out of the
team's hands. For you smelling ammonia caps. Now if they
were specific instaid emmonia caps. I grew up doing ammonia
caps to get fired up, to wake up.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
To, you know, to kind of get yourself going.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
But now they have eucalyptus all, they have peppermint all,
they have.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
Spear men all. Let me see, you got me some once.
You give me yesterday some eucalyptics trying to give me yesterday.
Speaker 12 (36:47):
Ye yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
I was like, wait a minute, Mark, got me over here,
fired up? Come on, wake up, man, wake up? Since
the shower missed.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Yeah, that's yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Get your face, you know it's it's like, is it
like soul? Look at my skin? Look how pretty my
skin is?
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Y'all get back up against the camera because because there's
there's some stuff that's happening right now.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
Oh my goodness, oh wow, by live.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
But my curiosity is this How many players do you
believe that is not going to use that? You know,
Baker Mayfield is one of those guys that you see
on the sideline getting himself ready to go, and he
was like, that is ridiculous for them not to for
us not to be able to have them, And it
was like, no, you can have them.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
Yeah, just don't have the teams.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
The ones that's responsible for it because of the liability.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Is I understand legality?
Speaker 2 (37:45):
So uh, we we preached that with our guys and
girls at all Caribbeans, like there's things that we will
be responsible for and that will take care of. But
this that's on you don't expect us to pay for
certain things. Don't expect for us to help you with
(38:07):
certain things because it would put a lot more liability
on us and.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
We can't have that. Yeah, it is Uh, it's gonna
be interesting.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
The league is trying to cover themselves in so many
different ways. But this is another one that I'm like,
why is this even being an announcement? It didn't even
have to be an announcement because I don't think anybody
really paid attention to it that hard on the care
You're right, right, like why say what.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
You mean, Yeah, no, many cares true point, true point
right there. Our number one is in the books. Our
number two is just around the corner.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Arch Mandy Manning continues to be part of the conversation
and I just can't wait to see what Mark thinks
about it. Right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports
Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to our
number two of the Morning Kickoff right here sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Mike Harballharden, World's strongest Man,
(39:06):
d Mark Henry bringing it to you right here in
our number one, we had a lot to talk about
when it came to the Texas Longhorns and their defense,
the secondary getting a lot better, and some of the
young players that are getting to learn about Dwayne a Quina. Also,
we got a chance to talk to our guy, Eric
Henry of Horns two four seven and we talked smelling
(39:27):
salts and red zone for college football. I think that
is a win win situation. Coming up in the next segment,
there's a football player that played at the University of
Texas that is making his way up the charts. And
of course we got the world's Strongest take and we'll
close out the show talking about the NFL as we
(39:51):
have NFL Action tonight.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
I'm already are you Are you excited about this? Absolutely?
Like even though absolutely Lily.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Now we get to start, man, we're getting ready for
fantasy drafts. You got to be able to pay attention
to what's going on. And I'm excited and all that
other stuff. So yeah, this is an opportunity to I
wish it was the Cowboys playing. They will on Saturday.
Just be patient, be patient, Be patient, Grasshopper, be patient.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Grass.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
We'll hear from coach Schottenheimer in the next segment as well.
He's got some he's got some stick about him, man,
and I'm all laying on it.
Speaker 3 (40:29):
But right now I want to talk about arch Manning.
Speaker 1 (40:32):
Arch Manning obviously has been the story of the entire
offseason when Quinn yours decided last year that it was
going to be it's time to move on and wasn't
going to transfer anywhere else, go to the NFL. Who
By the way, Quinn has been killing it in the
NFL thus far, So he's another person that will get
(40:53):
a chance to see this weekend and see how well
he plays. But arch Manning is an intriguing study. When
he was coming out of high school, people were hating
on him. Oh he played at this small school. He
wasn't He didn't go up against the top players. He
never went to these camps and never went to the
(41:14):
seven on sevens.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
He didn't do any of that.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
And I always used to say, I'm like, why would
I go and go to these camps when I have
three of the best quarterbacks to ever played the game
as far as super Bowl champions and family lineage as
the Mannings, right, So why do I need to go
to that when I can work right here with my
family every single week and get better training, real on
(41:41):
the job training than I would somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
And I get it. I get it.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
People just wanted to see him and how he compared
with some of these other quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
But he has never been the same as anybody else. No,
not hard. This is is like I can your kids.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
They play sports, and even if they don't play the
same sports you played, they have the same mentality, They're
taught the same work ethic. What experiences you had with coaches,
That's more important a lot of times than how many
reps you get at a camp, because you do a
lot of standing around at camp, right, you know, so
(42:25):
I would rather go get some real quality work, have
a coach that's watching every movement that you make and
really give you that.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
Time and reps behind the workout.
Speaker 1 (42:37):
But the story continues to be not even about this season.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
It's more about next season. And the fact.
Speaker 1 (42:47):
Remains that this is a kid who's only made ninety
five college throws. Ninety five college throws against some of
the dogs, as they like to say, his first true,
true challenge as a starter will come in twenty three days.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Against Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
But everybody keeps saying he's the number one overall draft pick,
he's the top prospect. Teams are trying to tank for
the potential of Arch Manning. Now my question to you,
and I told you on Monday, I've had a change
of heart. I've pushed my chips to the front of
(43:39):
the table and I'm going all in because if he
goes out and plays.
Speaker 2 (43:45):
The way the hype is, then he should go. He
has to make a decision, but we all know that
that decision in his family is not about the NFL.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
It's more about getting the as you said, the reps
with a quarterback whisperer, a pro style offense with coach
Sart to find a way to get better each week,
each rep, each moment. So to me, if this kid
has been patient to get this moment to be the
(44:23):
starting quarterback at the University of Texas, what is the
rush for him to get to the NFL the NFL?
Speaker 3 (44:32):
There is no rush for him.
Speaker 2 (44:35):
Like a lot of times the guys they go into
the NFL because they need to provide, Archie doesn't have
to go and provide.
Speaker 1 (44:44):
Well, a lot of those guys are going to the
NFL because that is the ultimate dream for a lot
of football players basketball.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
I'm sure that Archie has the ultimate dreams playing on Sundays, absolutely,
but that you have to temper that expectation because his
uncles and grandfather have experienced it already, so they know, hey,
there is no rush. We got you intol. Arch is
(45:11):
a millionaire already, right, Well, what am I talking about?
You don't need his grandfather's money and his dad's money
and his uncles.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
I mean, it's making four million dollars a year.
Speaker 8 (45:22):
And also you bring up players need to provide. That
is not even an issue anymore because of Nil that
changed the whole game. That's the reason why more players wait, now.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
Right, you can go and get an extra year in
college and then prepare yourself for your real life, which
happens after football.
Speaker 3 (45:40):
Well, here's the crux of it all.
Speaker 1 (45:43):
Because Peyton Manning had an opportunity to be the number
one pick in ninety seven and he came back to
be the quarterback for Tennessee. The Mannings are built different
and when it comes to those types of moments, they
believe in the process, where a lot of people don't
believe in the process.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
They want to skip the line.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
They want to they see the opportunity and they go
for it. Do you blame him, No, not at all.
Not there's no wrong answer, is my point. If he decides,
if he goes out there and balls out and he leaves,
that's great. But I don't understand how we have the
judgment of something, of saying that a guy is going
(46:29):
to be this on the basis before he passes right, Well,
I mean I understand it, but you know, there's always perception,
and perception is reality.
Speaker 2 (46:40):
The perception is he comes from it. Yeah, that's what
that's one. So he's going to be it. When that's
we know, we both know that that's not always the case.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
If his last name was Johnson, where we have this
type of conversation.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
Well, that's true too.
Speaker 2 (46:58):
Everybody thought that that Chris was gonna be the next
Joe Montana, the way that they hyped him.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
When he came here.
Speaker 2 (47:06):
Oh my god, he's built like Troy Aikman and throws
the ball with the accuracy of Joe Montana.
Speaker 3 (47:13):
Remember those comments he had.
Speaker 2 (47:18):
If man, they gave him the they gave him the
same treatment that Arch is getting right now.
Speaker 1 (47:23):
Well, that's the thing too, when I when I look
at what Arch is walking around with every single day,
it's so much pressure because the expectations are ridiculously high.
Speaker 2 (47:38):
If he was playing in a horrible system, like if
he'd been playing three years ago, I would be like,
good luck, right, because he's in a he's in a
situation to this university.
Speaker 3 (47:52):
If this situation.
Speaker 1 (47:54):
Right here was not what it is with coach Sart,
none of this conversation would be happening because he would
have not come to the University of Texas with the
previous regime.
Speaker 3 (48:07):
Yeah, he'd have been somewhere else, definitely.
Speaker 2 (48:09):
But the reality is, if and listen, we if was
the fifth, we all be drunk. If Arch wins the Heisman,
if Arch wins a national championship, if Arch wins all
the accolades that we look at as being oh, this
(48:33):
is the number one quarterback, why not go.
Speaker 3 (48:38):
Look, I don't think that he wants to go right now.
Speaker 1 (48:42):
I think he truly enjoys being a student athlete student
athlete here at the University of Texas. I firmly believe
that I've seen him. I've seen his actions. I've seen
him out in public and how he interacts. He's a
he's a kid. He has fun like everybody else. He
(49:05):
knows that when and I'm sure the family has told him,
when you get to the next level, it is a job. Now,
this is still a job. And I know they getting paid,
so it's worked. You got to go to work, bro.
But you gotta understand too. The intrigue is the story.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
He goes out and he plays lights out against Ohio State,
Oh my goodness, give it to it, give him the trophy.
Speaker 3 (49:36):
Now, that's exactly what they're going to say.
Speaker 1 (49:38):
If he goes out and he plays terrible against.
Speaker 2 (49:41):
Ohio I knew he wasn't ready.
Speaker 1 (49:45):
I told you if he goes out and he plays outstanding.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
What the hell was start doing?
Speaker 1 (49:51):
They could have won a national championship last year exactly.
This is a no win, all win since situation. I mean,
it's unbelievable. Coming up next, we're gonna stay in the
NFL have a conversation about a one running back that
used to grace the forty anchors and.
Speaker 3 (50:11):
What's next for him.
Speaker 1 (50:12):
And of course we're gonna hear from coach Schottenheimer and CJ.
Stroud right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
A thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (50:21):
This is a coming up. In the next segment, we
will have.
Speaker 1 (50:25):
The World's Strongest tape, brought to you by the world's
strongest men, and we'll close out the show by talking
in FL as the NFL is back. We have football
until the end of Ebruary. Who starting tonight, So Martimer,
we're back.
Speaker 3 (50:44):
We're back.
Speaker 1 (50:45):
Speaking of being back, we're gonna talk running back and
this is a running back that has made some moves
and continues to while those that want to pay attention.
We had a discussion about him early in the year
earlier this month actually was a new month, so earlier
in the summer about the ability of one Bijon Robinson.
(51:10):
Jean Robinson is somebody that is going to probably go
number one or number two in a couple of fantasy drafts.
He's so good that one person that we know decided
to trade him last year because he didn't feel like
he was valuable enough. And you got the ultimate weapon.
You got Jean Robinson. You got the ultimate He's got
(51:34):
to prove it to me. What yeah, Yeah, that voice
you heard in the background was one Mark Henry.
Speaker 2 (51:44):
But Mark, he riched for thirteen yards in the game
from when I had him as a fantasy football player
last season.
Speaker 1 (51:52):
So you made him? Did you realize that he was
he had six kitchens? Did you realize he was hurt
during that game? Did you realize that?
Speaker 8 (52:00):
Told me?
Speaker 1 (52:01):
So, let's just hear what the NFL thinks of one
Vjon Robinson.
Speaker 7 (52:07):
Let's talk about guys that are tough to game plan against.
Speaker 4 (52:12):
There's a guy in Atlanta that whereas number seven.
Speaker 13 (52:19):
Robinson got away, Matthew had him in the backfield, but
Jean Robinson was able to get away and games overall.
Picked at the draft last year and already one of
the top running backs in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (52:30):
Jon He's definitely one of those rare breeze. He's tough
to deal with.
Speaker 14 (52:38):
Oh my gosh, how am I forgetting this? Jon Jon's
dijon Bjon Robinson baller four quarters. You have to worry
about him. I think put that hands out to me.
Is you know he gets the Saints. I got a
pitching the outside. It looked like there was nothing there.
It was just globbal all over the place. But the
(53:02):
stay patient broke through the line.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Look at the black sex laying all over the turn,
and I was like one on one with a safety
and then it was a touchdown.
Speaker 1 (53:12):
Tyron Matthew hits us a rioting about the eight rod
line and the guns drags him into the htel. This
master of making defenders miss just missed the top one
hundred as a rookie, breaking one hundred eighth last year.
The best definition I can give Bjon is he's Ai
(53:33):
with the ball in his ass what Alan adver sad
with the ball in his hand?
Speaker 3 (53:41):
Mark carry.
Speaker 1 (53:42):
He's somebody that a lot of people go to for advice.
I've seen it, I've been around it. But one thing
that cannot do is go to you for fantasy advice
when you are known to trade everybody. That is why
my emotions.
Speaker 2 (54:05):
My man, my man got choked up when it came
to be Jan Robinson and his emotions. I get in
my feelings hard. It's like you got one time. I'm like,
my man said, he had thirteen yards. Oh but he
did have six kids. He had six kids, is like
fifty yards but no score. He scored, and then like
(54:28):
the next two or three games he was just not
the first of his last season, he was not good
and he ended up with fourteen hundred yard dressing. But
that was after touchdowns. Yeah, that was that was after
I traded it. Well, I know people in your he
got mad that I traded him, so he some of
that comes.
Speaker 3 (54:48):
It shouldn't come to me. Oh, you're the one that
got him motivated.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
I motivated him. Okay, put him on the wave of wire.
Yeah you did, and.
Speaker 1 (54:55):
People were looking at you like you was crazy and
then they like you give me what.
Speaker 3 (55:01):
Okay, take it? Take it. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (55:04):
So just to know, looking at fantasy football, the expectations
this year is b Jon Robinson is going to be
one of the first guys taken this year in the
fantasy draft. I can't wait to see where I picked
in a couple of my fantasy drafts. But Jean Robinson,
now that I'm back in the league, no, no, no,
(55:24):
you're not.
Speaker 3 (55:25):
Why why am I not? You're not? We we we
we had a meeting. We had a wow. Let me
guess you're.
Speaker 1 (55:33):
Gonna be out of town on the twenty fourth of
what of this?
Speaker 3 (55:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (55:39):
Yeah yeah, So once again he gone not his own
he gone.
Speaker 3 (55:44):
Speaking of being gone, we talked about the.
Speaker 1 (55:47):
Cowboys and what we saw, uh in their their interest squad,
their little scrimmage against the Rams.
Speaker 3 (55:54):
The Cowboys will play the Rams.
Speaker 1 (55:55):
I got it this Saturday, and a lot of people
are thinking in that Brian Schottenheimer maybe playing koy with
the little folks. But he does have a little temper
about him when he things aren't going his way.
Speaker 12 (56:10):
I give myself a C maybe a C minus, you know,
just we didn't have we didn't have as much success.
Speaker 3 (56:16):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (56:16):
But I also h had a a lot of bullets
I didn't use. I actually screwed myself up. I got pissed,
so I called the bomb. I called the bomb. I
wasn't supposed to call the bomb. The coach was like, really,
I thought we were leaving that out.
Speaker 3 (56:29):
I was like, yeah, I got it.
Speaker 12 (56:30):
I got I kind of got pissed off, and so
like we do have those plays just so you guys
know we have those plays. But literally I did that.
I was like, man, that felt really good. But now
they know we have that play. So but yeah, I
was like, I was like, the squad just okay.
Speaker 3 (56:45):
Yeah, yeah, just okay, just okay, just okay.
Speaker 1 (56:49):
Another player with the Houston Texans, quarterback c J. Stroud,
is somebody that I am hopeful, hopeful that he's turned
the core. He didn't play bad last year, contrary to
popular belief. He had to deal with what a lot
of people said was a terrible offensive line. They've made
(57:10):
the changes, They've gone out and made some moves, but
they also changed oc But c J. Stroud his mindset
is a little bit different this year on his approach
to the season.
Speaker 15 (57:22):
Fall in love with the process and not the or
the progress and not like the result in the moment.
Because sometimes you can throw a ball and they looked
like a bad ball, but bad communication between you know,
myself and the receiver. So that's just like one point
of emphasis on you know, like having to work through
those kinks because that's what comes in with like a
newer scheme.
Speaker 3 (57:42):
So but yeah, other than that.
Speaker 15 (57:44):
Like you know, you still don't want to be turning
ball over or you know, like see bad plays. But
I think we've gotten past that part in camp and
you know now it's just like more competitive on both sides,
and yeah, you gotta be able to still compete and
like hold yourself to a standard that you're not gonna
you know, make mistakes. But those things have been learning
from him and just having that balance.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
It sounds like maturity to me. Well, I've always thought
of him as a mature guy. I mean, dude said
that they lived on dirt like for a while when
he was younger. He said that his life was not
what it is now. So he learned to be humble early.
He learned how to mature early. He grew up in
(58:26):
a bad situation in his eyes, and now he's in
a better, better place, And a lot of that has
to do with his faith, obviously, his mother's faith, and
how things are starting to grow. I guess you would
say exponentially with what's going on in Houston. Yeah, they
(58:47):
the better moves y Demico Ryans. I believe he's gonna
be there for a long time, like Tomlin long. He
has that type of ability. Wow, think about it. They've
made so many adjustments after who was it Lovey Smith
(59:08):
and then Collie they got Cutler color.
Speaker 3 (59:11):
Yeah, so they got rid of all these guys.
Speaker 1 (59:15):
And now they have the one that they're looking for
in Domico, Ryan's former player, who came back and has
turned that around to the point that now people are
looking at them like the AFC South is there is
pretty much every year. Every year it seems like they
are in the hunt to win that division and it
(59:38):
doesn't look like things are slowing down for them at all.
Speaker 2 (59:41):
I'm looking forward to seeing what he's gonna do based
off the fact that I did the world strongest take
on him three weeks ago where he was talking about
his body about how he gained ten pounds of muscle
and he feels like he can run the ball more.
Speaker 3 (59:58):
Please don't run the ball. Not only will Mark.
Speaker 1 (01:00:01):
Trade you, he wants to make sure that you slide
everywhere that you get you slide, please, so because if
you don't, you just drop of that market.
Speaker 3 (01:00:09):
Please slide.
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
If you don't, if you don't slide, you're getting traded.
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
And just ask the big fellows, I'm gonna trade you. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
Coming up next, we're gonna hear from the Big fellaw
as he brings you his world's strongest take. Right here
on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred,
This is all WWE Hall of Famer and the World's
Strongest Man, Dean Mark Henry always brings it in. Right now,
He's about to bring you his world's strongest.
Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
Tape, taking away big fellow Arge, what up? You know
what time it is?
Speaker 2 (01:00:42):
What Tomas, It's time for the World's Strongest tape by
the world's strongest man. Mar Guess back then they didn't
know me. Now I'm hot, say all on me. Well,
the world's strongest take Today it's about Ohio State University.
(01:01:09):
It's about.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
Doing a little shade hard. I got through a little
shade because.
Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
Teams are always trying to get ahead, but they always
find a way to try to trick you. And I
think that's what Ohio State is doing. They have not
named a starter at quarterback. They have a quarterback battle
(01:01:41):
going on right now. And Julian saying was a kid
that you know committed the Alabama and Sabman left and
he decommitted and went to Ohio State. Lincoln Client Hosts
is the other quarterback that came in and was in waiting,
(01:02:06):
and now they have a competition for who's going to
be the guy. Coach Ryan Days said that he loves
the fact that the war between the two is cordial
and right now, Julian saying kind of has a you know,
(01:02:27):
kind of jump on the situation.
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
He's got an unbelievable arm. But I feel like the
shade is.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
They do realize that we know that they haven't named
the quarterback because they want us to spend time preparing
for two people rather than preparing for one quarterback and.
Speaker 3 (01:02:51):
University of Texas. I think it's not going to matter.
Speaker 2 (01:02:54):
I think that, you know, this is just more of
them trying to related situation that is going to be
feudal anyway. Everybody's like, man, this is gonna be a
hell of a game. It's, man, two top teams one
versus two. I feel like that both of these quarterbacks
(01:03:15):
need to have really good cardio because they're going to
be running for their lives.
Speaker 3 (01:03:21):
This defense is going to be the difference. But my
take is is that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
These these little competitions these little quarterback battles that you
that you throw up to try to make other teams
work for both is a waste of time.
Speaker 3 (01:03:46):
I feel like that you go in to a situation
and you impose your will.
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
Don't try to trick, don't try to like make things,
you know, like money in the water. I feel like
you're wasting your time doing that.
Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
What's the use?
Speaker 1 (01:04:05):
Well, I think that this team Ohio State, even though
they have to replace their starting quarterback Will Howard, who's
in the NFL and dealing with a finger injury right now,
I think if you look at their team, they still
have the freakiest athlete on earth in Jeremiah Smith that
Texas is gonna have to try to stop. Carnell Tait
(01:04:26):
is explosive on that end. Their offensive line is an
experienced offensive line. I mean they gotta They just got
to transfer from Rice. Luke Montgomery is a junior, Their
center is a junior. They have some older guys, some
guys that have played some experienced minutes. The other part
(01:04:46):
of it, they got to transfer tight end that just
come in. But the thing about it, Mark and this
is something that Texas is looking at too. And we've
talked about this, sometimes we don't have to put everything
on the quarterback. You gotta play field position number one,
number two. You got to be able to run the football.
So take some of that pressure off of them. And
(01:05:08):
I believe that that's what Ohio State is going to
try to do. From what I understand about Julian saying,
he's a mobile quarterback too, So that's the other part
of it. Tallas, Texas is going to be able to
contain what they don't know. They're probably going back and
looking at college I mean, not college film, high school film.
It was probably somebody that was on their radar. He's
(01:05:29):
from Carlsbad, California, so I'm sure Sark knew something of them,
being a Calie kid. But I also believe that, yeah,
it's going to be difficult, and he may be running
for his life.
Speaker 3 (01:05:39):
But I don't think it has anything to do with them.
Speaker 1 (01:05:42):
What I think it is it has everything to do
with that Texas defense and how good we project them
to be.
Speaker 3 (01:05:49):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
I definitely think the defense is going to play a
big role in decide what Ohio State does. But I
just you know, like all of the small mirror is
the we're gonna we don't know who's gonna be the quarterback.
They know who's gonna be the quarterback. But you got to.
Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
Understand too, it truly can be they don't know who's
gonna be the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:06:13):
It truly can happen because of the fact.
Speaker 1 (01:06:16):
The only reason why we knew that Arch was gonna
be the starting quarterback is because he's been here for
three years. He's been in the program, so we knew
that these are transfers. And the guy what kind holts
I mean, he's from South Dakota, so that's already.
Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
A mark against him. No, I just kidding, I'm just kidding.
I'm kidding.
Speaker 1 (01:06:41):
But still this is something. And you the most important
part about all of this is this is Ohio State, man,
this is this is the national champion football team. And
people seem to forget that. And just like we always hey, hey,
it's a new year, new team, not the same players.
(01:07:04):
They lost players, so did Texas. Texas lost eleven players
to the NFL eleven they lost nine. So yeah, there's
gonna be some changes. But these programs recruit, well, they don't.
They're not just getting a kid from Podunk High and
(01:07:25):
saying come on man, I think you gotta go out there, big.
Speaker 3 (01:07:29):
Test for you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
Ryan Day would be fired if they don't have a
quarterback because he's an offensive mighty got So I believe
that this game is gonna be a lot better than
what people think. I think it's gonna be close ball game.
I think that both of these teams are gonna, like
you said before, they're gonna probably try to fill out
each other, see where everybody is, and then go out there.
(01:07:50):
But the question, somebody gonna get punched in the face,
and it's gonna happen right away.
Speaker 3 (01:07:56):
Yeah, I hope it's Jeremiah Smith.
Speaker 1 (01:07:59):
Well, j Amat Smith number one freakish athlete in college for.
Speaker 3 (01:08:04):
Yeah, he is.
Speaker 1 (01:08:07):
But Texas held him down last year. He didn't get
too crazy against Texas last year, so they've they've seen
him before. They know what it's all about.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
Even though last year's stats seventy six receptions, thirteen hundred
and fifteen yards, fifteen touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (01:08:23):
Yeah, he's problem.
Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
But as we talk about speed kills, they got some
speed for him too over there at the University of Texas.
We'll see, we will definitely see against Texas. He had
one reception bro and they have Will Howe locked up.
They won't let him pound. Coming up next, we'll close
out the show and send you to Damn Patrick. NFL
(01:08:49):
football starts tonight, folks, right here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone.

Texas Longhorns, Craig Way, on The Craig Way Show. They'll
give you a chance to win a pair of tickets.
There's just so much that is going on. We are
ready for football season. Football season is upon us and
cannot wait. And what better way to kick off football
(01:09:40):
season than tonight, Mark Henry. Tonight we get a chance
to watch NFL football. People are trying to vibe for
a starting position, trying to make a club, and all
of it does matter to me.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
You know, people always say, oh, man, it's no big deal.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
No, it's a big deal. It's a big deal because
of the fact that lives are changed. Lives are changed forever.
Not the ones that we already know, it's the ones
that are trying to be there to become a household name.
Speaker 2 (01:10:13):
Well, we know Lamar Jackson is not gonna play tonight,
so I want to I'm curious to see the backups
because that's usually what you get in preseason.
Speaker 3 (01:10:24):
Tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
Go ahead, They're gonna run the same system, but it's
not gonna be the same players.
Speaker 3 (01:10:29):
Tonight, you get the six o'clock game.
Speaker 1 (01:10:32):
You get the Baltimore Coats taking on the did I
say Baltimore Coat Baltimore Coast, Yeah, Indianapolis. There used to
be the Baltimore cart right, you're right, yeah, the Indianapolis
coach will travel to take on the Ravens. That game
kicks off at six o'clock on the NFL Network six
point thirty. You have the Bengals and the Eagles, and
(01:10:53):
at nine o'clock you have the Raiders taking on the
Seattle Seahawks. Tomorrow we'll get into these conversations again. Tomorrow
you have the Lions at the Falcons. Shardoor Sanders. NFL
Network will be carrying that game as he makes the
start against the Panthers. You also have the Commanders versus
(01:11:15):
the Patriots. And then the weekend Oh yeah, Cowboys bab
B Cowboys will be playing against the Rams at LA.
Speaker 3 (01:11:25):
And we heard from Schottenheimer earlier.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
Today talking about how he's competitive, he looks at certain things.
Speaker 3 (01:11:32):
He great, gave himself a seat in the first uh
critic judge, that's good, that's good.
Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
Let's know where we're at right away before the anger
starts to set in as a fan base.
Speaker 3 (01:11:44):
The fan base is already at that point.
Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
But I'm looking at them those games tonight because now
we have football moving on today, Texas Longhorns, we're back
at practice. The players had the day off. Now they
will be back at practice and we'll be here from
some players tomorrow, which is really really going to be
an exciting time as we get closer and closer to
(01:12:09):
the start of the football season.
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
Mark, you mentioned something earlier and I want to go
back to it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:15):
You talked about ESPN and their ability to buy parts
of the NFL network. They got ten percent steak, they
get possible red zone They've got different things that are
part of it. But one of the things that you
mentioned is the WWE and the fact that now they
will be doing some live events live pay per view.
(01:12:39):
Normally events can now be seen on the Mothership, the
mother station. How integral is that to the success because
they're already on Netflix.
Speaker 3 (01:12:53):
You know, they got Raw on Netflix. I think a
lot of the events have been on Netflix.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
Too, right, know, if Peacock is going to go away,
if the are they going to just continue to play
Peacock is the is the provider that they've been using.
So you know, I would have to get more in
depth with knowing if it's coming to an end and
then that'll be the only place. But the archive is
(01:13:22):
there too, so like you can go on Peacock and
pull up Mattress from fifty years ago. So is that
going to be the thing with ESPN or is it
just ESPN It's going to be just the live events.
Speaker 3 (01:13:38):
So I'd have to look into it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:40):
Well, you go back and you look at some of
the things that have already happened through this part. You
think about Stephanie McMahon's places, right, like she's been doing
a bunch of interviews that have been part of ESPN
and what they've been able to do. You look at
what Triple h who has been a part of it
and gone after it and been on ESPN. And then
(01:14:01):
of course you got Pat McAfee who is a mainstay.
But I don't know if Pat McAfee really wants to
be at ESPN, because no matter what is going on.
Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
It's like he's trying to get fired exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:14:14):
He's like, I'm showing y'all that nothing is happening to
me because he goes after the suits, he goes after
the mid levels, he goes after.
Speaker 3 (01:14:24):
Everybody, and there's no repercussion for it. He's good. He
draw money, Yeah, I understand, and people are.
Speaker 2 (01:14:32):
Tuning in to see him so like you don't cut
your hand off despite your arm, right and Pat he
the whole arm shoulder, he's the clavial. Yeah, I'm just like, wow,
he's not walking around like Will Levis's shoulder.
Speaker 3 (01:14:50):
He's got all of that out there and just making
it happen.
Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
But you know what, a lot of times when you're
in a situation of power, people use it the wrong way.
He he's trying to put other people on. He's always
doing really good, and he don't like the fact that
the bosses trying to tell him what to do when
he knows they brought him in because he knows what
he was doing, what he was doing the thing before them.
Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:15:15):
Yeah, they just have a bigger platform for him to
be on. So you know, I get it. Do you
think we can do a.
Speaker 1 (01:15:25):
We'll talk to our boss today, but let's ask him
if we can do a prerequisite before the show, like
you know how he does a disclaimer, right, Can we
just start doing disclaimers and just go out there and
go off.
Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
Mark Henry may say something that could possibly be against
the viewers the following up the station.
Speaker 8 (01:15:46):
The following missuss from Mark Henry is not associated with
iHeart Radio thirteen hundred zone or any affiliates in the area.
Speaker 2 (01:15:56):
We might need to get us a disclaimer go every
show because we've been on the verge of some bad
things on the verge, but haven't happened yet.
Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
No, no, knock on it.
Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
We're not well, would that's particle board? Well, well, some
things happen, some things have been cut.
Speaker 3 (01:16:19):
Oh man, we'll make sure you tune in tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:16:21):
We're gonna talk more about the NFL as it kicked off.
It will kick off tonight with three teams excuse me,
three games. Six teams participating. Will also preview Friday night
game and the weekend. We'll also hear from some players
at the University of Texas as we will be twenty
