Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to our number two of the morning kick
off right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I am Mike Harball.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Harsh He is WWE Hall of Famer and the world's
strongest man. He Mark Henry and joining us from Arizona.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
He used to walk the forty Acres.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
He was helping build recruiting classes in his early days,
and now he's doing the same thing for Arizona State.
He's got his team battle tested and ready to get
into the quarterfinals of the Peach Bowl, the Chick fil
A Peach Bowl.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
He is the one and only Brian Carrington. Brian, what's up? BC?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
What's going on?

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Man?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
What's going on?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Glad to be here, Glad to have you on.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Man. We're thankful that you could take the time to
get on and talk about your team.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
But I want to know how you doing.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Man. You've been bouncing around a little bit doing some
different things. Went to TCU, got into playoffs there. You
seem to be bringing that old with you everywhere that
you go.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
I appreciate it. I appreciate it. It's been quite a journey.
You know. When I left, you know, the foury Acres,
the goal was to you know, be an on the
field coach. You know, so I had to go on
my little voyage. But you know, I guess you could
say I see the light at the end of the tunnel.
But you know, things are going smooth.

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Man.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
I'm grateful for my experiences, you know, thus far in
my career.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
Brian, I thought that was the best news that I
heard when you got a position coach job RESI than
just being a recruiting coordinator. Not saying that just being
a recruiting coordinator is not enough. Obviously, wherever you go,
you are taking your talents with you for bringing in talent,
Like what what do you owe that to?

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Like this?

Speaker 4 (01:44):
Players just have a magnetism to you or is it
is there like a technique that you use.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, I think, you know, we don't give kids enough
credit for the discernment that they have at sixteen, seventeen, eighteen,
nineteen years old. So I feel, you know, I'm authentic.
You know, the kids that are interact with know that
we're gonna have an authentic relationship, know that it's more
than just football. Even if you don't choose the university

(02:12):
that I'm at or the logo on my college shirt.
You know, we're still gonna be tight. I'm still gonna
be a fan of you. I'm still gonna be an
advocate for you. So I think, you know, kids don't
get enough credit, you know for the decumber that they
make a lot of schools, you know, with their their
pitches really don't separate themselves. So you know, similar with
football players, I know that they're not you know football players.

(02:35):
Football is just what they do now. So just really
having a genuine relationship for the person, you know. Now, coaching,
I'm a big advocate that you got to be able
to coach the person before you coach the player.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
You know, I'm sure you have your eight game material.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
What is what is the thing you tell a kid
does not highly regarded, a kid that's you know, uh,
you see potential, but they don't have the big name recognition,
the stars and all of that. What do you tell them?

Speaker 3 (03:07):
I think that's the unique thing about recruiting. You know,
it's a lot of kids that will kind of ride
the wave and the marathon of recruiting, especially if they
pop up on the scene as a freshman and get
all these accolades, all these offers. But there's also you
know recruits that go through, you know, recruitments that pretty
much start late. They don't get the parade, they don't

(03:28):
get the glory, you know, but they kind of get
in at the back door at the very end, you know. So,
I think recruiting is a case by case scenario. They're
going to be people that are paraded and applauded throughout
their process, and then there's going to be people that
are slept on that are kind of diamonds in the rough,
you know. So I'm a believer that one man's trash
is another man's treasure. But it really just comes down

(03:50):
the evaluation in what you feel and what you believe
that this player can grow up into.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
Do you look for those guys?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
I would say there's a lot of guys like that
on our rosters.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
That's how it's supposed to be.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
I mean you you, each coach looks for something different
that can help benefit to his program and what he
looks for in a type of player. It doesn't necessarily
have to be the fastest, the biggest, the strongest. It's
the one that's gonna come in and put the work
in and be a part of the success story that
you guys are building and speaking of success, that's exactly

(04:27):
what has been happening at Arizona State.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
You were picked.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Last to finish uh, to finish last in the Big Twelve,
and all you do is go out there, win the
Big Twelve, win the Big Twelve Championship, and just show
up and show out. What do you attest that to?
I know you're coach Dillingham. I got a chance to
talk to him the other day, and he is full
of fire and energy every single day, and he looks

(04:52):
like he will go to war with just about anybody
for his players.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Yeah, I think just just this roster, collective league, and
even across college football. It's a lot of talent everywhere,
you know, but what's not everywhere as opportunity.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
And so we were able to provide.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Opportunity to a lot of people that came in with
that ship on their shoulder. They came in and they
wanted to work to achieve, you know, a common goal
and win the Big Twelve Championship. They started in August.
You know our mindset, you know, it's something I say
in my room every day. We're capable of anything, but
we're entitled to nothing. So every Saturday when we get
an opportunity, we have to make the best of these opportunities.

(05:29):
So the more and more that we won, the more
you know, obviously the Big Twelve is a competitive league,
is the second half league. But the more and more
that we had those close victories, it brought us closer,
you know, and guys wanted to not loosen up. They
wanted to tighten it up even more the more we won.
So it's been a beautiful thing to see, you know.
Bes far.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
We're talking to Brian Carrington, Arizona State's cornerback coach. Used
to be on the forty Acres, done a lot of
great things in college football. TCU was at Universe Houston,
also went out to La had some time out there.
You've been making your travels man, and you've been making
it work. What are some of the things that you've

(06:10):
learned along the way that has kind of helped you
enhance what you're already capable of doing.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yeah, just being the present, where your be, where your
tin tos are, you know, and just build and just worked.
You know, we did a lot of building. We did
a lot of working. You know. Last year us going
through nine didn't really help us from a media standpoint.
Of course, we were supposed to pick lass, especially what
we lost in the portal, but we just kept our
head down, We just kept swinging, and we just kept
looking for, you know, quality student athletes, more importantly, good

(06:41):
human beings to bring within our program. I don't think
we did anything special outside of bringing in people that
were like minded with us, you know. So the success
that we've had is just a testament to us, you know,
bringing forth Coach Dillingham's vision and you know, it's come.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
To life at this point. You know, we've activated the valley.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
A large part of that has been our Tempe to Texas,
our Texas to Tempe movement, you know, having over twenty
players on our roster that held from the state of
Texas in a league called the Big Twelve, which is
for the most part and extension of the Texas high.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
School football family.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
So just to see, you know, you know, our formula
kind of working right now, kind of a little head
of ahead of schedule. You know, it's a joy to see,
but it keeps us even more.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
As zealous for what we can build here there as
Olla state coach.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
When did you know and did you know in the
spring that y'all had something special with this with this team.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
I mean, we knew that we had a talented team.
But like I said earlier, you know, we're capable of
anything at the start of the season, but we're entitled
to nothing, you know. And the thing about your time
is you don't choose when it's your time. The time
kind of chooses you, you know. So we've kind of
been that Cinderella story this year in college football, but
didn't start off underneath the spotlight. We started off, you know,

(08:04):
week by weeks, you know, to the point to where, yeah,
we've commanded the national spotlight now, but we still have
that dog. We still got that chip on my shoulder
because just like the playoffs is resembling is a resemblance
at the beginning of the season, we're picked the last
team in the playoffs. So the narrative hasn't changed, you know,
And we got to continue being capable of anything but

(08:25):
entitled to nothing, and we got to make the best
of our opportunity to come January.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
First, Coach, tell us a little bit about your secondary room.
I mean, you got some talent to guys, some guys
that spent some time here on the forty Acres as well,
but they've gone out and made the name for themselves.
Kind of like what you were talking about. You get
an opportunity to play, you go make the most of it.
And it seems like Xavian Alford and a bunch of

(08:48):
other guys have had that opportunity and made the.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Most of it.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Yeah, you know, obviously Xavier.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
And Alfred is the one that stands out. Not only
see a team captured captain, this is a kid that
you know followed me to USC and you know now
to Arizona State. So I feel a little guilty of
having three different college shirts on recruits Avian.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
Alford, but for him to have to go through that transfer,
that transfer process.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
This is a kid that's set out over a thousand
days without playing a game of football. To fast forward
this season and he's a first team All Big Twelve performer.

Speaker 5 (09:24):
You know, that happens to.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Hell from you know, my hometown in Houston. So he's
opposed to child of what we're trying to build out here,
especially with our Texas to Tempey to Tempe movement.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
So it's a lot of players on our roster that
are from Texas that kind.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Of look love it out here in Arizona. It's a
it's an it's dynamic where kind of where California meets
Texas SmackDown in the middle. In Arizona, it's a very
enjoyable climbing for kids, you know, from the state of Texas.
Speaking subfly from a dB standpoint, it's a skilled guy heaven.
You know, you talk about only raining thirteen days out
of the year. You know, there's not a cloud in

(09:58):
the sky right now in Arizona. So our guys love
it here, you know, zaving out for it is one
of the many Texans on our roster that have kind
of found a home. And we have a lot of
people on our team that have kind of so journeyed
through college football that don't only just held from Texas.
So I feel like in that locker room, there's a

(10:21):
lot of experience, there's a lot of narratives, there's a
lot of stories, there's a lot of game people can peep,
you know, and it just is a stronger testament of
guys enjoying where their ten toes are now versus where
they were in the past.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
Well coaching with the success, you know, you won't sneak
up on anybody next year.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Oh not only you know, being under the spotlight. You know,
this year was cool, but I feel like we've created
a little respect for Arizona State. So moving forward, you know,
people definitely gonna have their bulls eye on us.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
I appreciate you, BC man, best of luck to you.
Thank you for taking the time less you man.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
I know a lot of folks around here have been
pulling for your success and we will continue to do so,
but just not on the first player.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
I appreciate the support man. We'll see allan.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
How about that?

Speaker 2 (11:09):
All right? There, it is there, you go. Thank you BC.
Brian Carrington secondary coach, doing a great job.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Over there, one of the original OG's that came to
the University of Texas to try to help build this
program to where it is right now. When we come back,
we'll continue the conversations and can continue to keep this
thing rolling as we talk a little bit about Saturday football.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
That's right, we got in FL games, we got college games.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
There's so much to get into right here on the
morning kickoff on sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone
