Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. We're gonna go north
of the Red River and bring on a good friend
of mine as he gets ready to preview the Oklahoma
Tennessee matchup tomorrow night six point thirty on ABC. He
is a former quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, and now
(00:21):
he's doing what we do. He's talking football right here
on the Morning Kickoff.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Cal Gundhy, Good morning, coach.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
How you doing, good Mike, how you doing, my friend?
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I'm good man.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
I'm sitting in here with Mark Henry and his son
obviously is a wrestler at Oklahoma, so he's got some Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Ties as well.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Good nice, Yeah, Hey, I love wrestling. We grew up
in our We grew up in mid city. You grew
up in state Oklahoma, and nothing bigger. I mean football
is big, Baseball is big, but wrestling's big. We grew
up with the Smith family traveled all over the country
wrestling alot. My brother was a really good wrestler, so
(01:01):
got tons of respects.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah, and that's the original bedroom.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
The original bedroom was Oklahoma, Oklahoma state in wrestling.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
It was a good day.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
See you know his history up there, now I had to.
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Yeah, Oklahoma have a great culture in pro wrestling. Yeah,
so you know you got people like like Danny Hodge,
you know, and Steve mcniche, I mean Steve doctor Deff Williams,
like the history of pro wrestling mirrors amateur wrestling. So
uh that was always you know, I wish Texas had wrestling,
(01:37):
but we don't.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
And that's why my son is up there, so Cale,
I want to get into it.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
This is a huge matchup.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Number six Tennessee travels to Oklahoma, number fifteen ranked Oklahoma.
This is a game that a lot of people are
paying attention to, not only just because of the quarterbacks,
both of these are highly talented, but also the coaches,
I mean Vinables and Hypel and Hypel coming back home
(02:07):
the prodigal. And we're trying to figure out how important
is this matchup for Oklahoma.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
It's huge.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
I think I've been talking on our radio show this week,
which I'm on Sports Animal here at ninety eight point
one in Oklahama City. We've been talking all week, and
I think it's a big of game in some areas
that Oklahoma has played since the two thousand games when
(02:36):
Nebraska came here and we beat Nebraska on the big stage.
And the reason I say that, Mike is, you know,
there's still a lot of people hesitant on this success.
OHU is going to have and can have moving forward
in the FTC. You know, you and I talked about
this a few weeks ago down at SEC media Days,
(02:58):
and in all respect to to the Texas fans there,
oh You dominated this part of the country and in
the Big Twelve Conference forever. I mean, it wasn't even close.
And Texas kind of got a hall pass or a
by going into the SEC that they were going to
be a factor and OU was a team that was
(03:19):
going to be middle of the road. And even though
oh you beat Texas last year, again, uh so, it's
a huge, huge game, and we're going to find out
just how good these teams are. We're going to find
out how good the OU defense is, because I think
they're really good, but we're going to find out how
good they are. We're going to find out how good
(03:41):
Tennessee is. Tennessee hadn't played anybody yet. Tennessee's good. Tennessee's
got great players, They've got a quarterback that I think
is a potential Heisman Trophy winner someday if he stays healthy.
I think he's a first round draft pick in the
NFL if he stays healthy. But they played Chattanooga, who's
an STS team. Okay, and you played better local teams
(04:01):
than the Austin area. On Friday night, they played North
Carolina State, who's a respectable team. But if you look
at North Carolina State statistically, they're one and second in
the country offensively and they're eighty ninth in the country defensively.
And then last week Tennessee played Kent State, who is
(04:22):
last in both offensive defense in the country at one
hundred and thirty third. So we're going to find out
how good these two teams are, and especially the OU
defense and the Tennessee football team moving forward. The OU
offense has been struggling and they're they're the one that
has not been up to par compared to the OU defense,
(04:42):
the Tennessee offense and the Tennessee defense. So we'll see
come Saturday night.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Coach, I watched the replay of Oklahoma and Tulane last night,
and I wanted to get a grasp on what the
offense and what the defense looked like, so have a
true uh.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Idea of what you're dealing with.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Tennessee likes to paint the corners on the zone. Read Uh.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
It looked like Oklahoma was having troubles at times getting
outside runs, Like how do they correct that?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Are are you referring to OU offense or OU defense?
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Their defense? Okay? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (05:25):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (05:25):
They did the the outside zone two lane hit them
in the second half and had something going with the
outside zone again. And here's gonna be the difference is
is now you got a guy in the quarterback and
see at Tennessee who can run with the ball. So
and it's it's that's what OU is doing offensively. I
mean some of their best players have been gun outside zone.
(05:49):
Get the linebackers and the d line going flat and
the running back being to make a back door cut
or Jackson Arno being able to cut it backside and
let him run with the ball. So again we're gonna see,
uh again, just how good these teams are.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Ohu's defense is good?
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Oh you?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
And and again are they great? I think they got
a chance to be. I don't know, I don't want
to stay great, but I think they got a chance
to be really good. They've got a too DP now
across the board that you would love to have on
your team. These guys play hard, they play physical. I
mean they can. They can get it. And now, are
(06:29):
there any all STC players? Yeah, there's a two or three.
Are there any all Americans? How many will play in
the NFL? I don't know about that, but but they can.
They can roll out twenty two players at at at
all their positions, and they're gonna play hard, and they
can run and and and so it'll be a challenge
(06:50):
for Tennessee in my opinion.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Saturday night, we're.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Talking to Cale Gundhy of The Sports Animal in Oklahoma covering.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
The Oklahoma Sooners.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
He's also a former quarterback for Oklahoma, and of course
he was an offensive coordinator there. Cal, I wanted to
ask you this, buddy. You know as well as I do.
Depth has always been an issue once you get to
that next level. Now you're getting a bunch of guys
supposedly that are going to be back from injury.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Does that help the Oklahoma Sooners?
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I know it does, but how much does it help them?
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Well? The question that I've had, you know, through springball
and during the OU football camp is even if those
guys were healthy, and I'm referring to the offensive line first,
my question is is how good are they? Even if
they are healthy, are they good enough? I'm a firm
(07:49):
believer that they have one of the best, that's not
the best, offensive line coaches in the country. And Bill
Bembo's been here for I don't know, eight or ten years,
probably now, and he will have those guys doing what
they're supposed to be doing. They will block who they're
supposed to block. Uh, they will use great techniques, but
are they capable physically to be able to do their
(08:13):
job in this SCC week in and week out. To me,
that's going to be the biggest challenge. And and Mike,
I don't know again, Uh, you know who's gonna be
back until the until somebody runs that on that field
and the ball snaps and the guys out there in
the huddle because you know every week, you know, we
get these I guess we're doing these sec injury deal.
(08:35):
You got questionable, you got probable, you got this, and
that I mean, I can't figure what anything is. I mean,
anybody's questionable and anybody can be probable. You know, it's
either is the dude playing or is he not playing?
So the biggest challenge will be that offensive line. They
may get a guy or two back, but I mean,
just are they good enough to play consistently week in
(08:56):
a week out in this SEC now wide receiver wide
that they can get Nick Anderson back, who's a Katie
Texas product, who's extremely talented, six four and a half
six five, is a four to four guy. He has
not played all year long. If they can get him
going again, that will help. They've got to get some
big plays. They got to push the ball down the field,
and they have not done that very and they have
(09:17):
not done that at all this whole season.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Well, I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
That's one of the games that I've been excited to
see the hype.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
I want to see what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Until your point, we'll see exactly who Tennessee is after
they take on your Oklahoma sooners.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
I want to thank you for the time, buddy, and
we'll talk again soon.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Appreciate you co.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
All right, sounds good there yet there see you guys.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
All right, Brother Cale Gundhy coming up next we get
back to Austin, Texas. I know It's a feel good
football Friday, but we got to talk baseball.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
We got coach Los Nagele.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
They have baseball coach at the University of Texas, joining
us next right here on the morning kickoff on Sports
Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone
