basketball team had a tough tough go on Friday night
(02:06):
as they lost to South Carolina.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
They played each other for the fourth.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Time in the regular season, I mean this season, and
it did not go well. Madison Booker, although she was
just recently named the repeat winner of the Sheryl Miller
Small Forward of the Year Award. She didn't have her
best game against South Carolina and they came up a
little bit short. She got in the early foul trouble,
(02:34):
and now we are moving on to next season. As
disappointing as it may be for this team and their loss,
what was some of the things that you really enjoyed
about this Texas basketball team.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I love the togetherness.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
I loved the complementary game that they were able to play.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
I love the coaching style.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
I love the relationship that the players had. But South
Carolina is just a better team. They have more scorers.
Madison Booker is the ultimate scorer for Texas. She doesn't
have an equal or near equal on that team in
(03:21):
the scoring department, especially with who handles the ball the most.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
And it's not blame.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Is.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Texas needs to recruit somebody that you know what I know.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Coach Vic loves the defensive player, but he needs somebody
that can knock a three down besides besides Jordan Lee.
This modern era of basketball, it's hard to win a
game when you know, you shoot seven threes and you
go one for seven or you go two for fourteen,
(03:58):
like that's that's that's not going to win in today's
college basketball. I would agree with you on that.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
One of the biggest things though, as this happens, is
you lose South Carolina defending national champion, repeating going to
the national championship game, but they ran into a buzz
saw called the Yukon Huskies. We talked about it before,
we'll continue to talk about it. I thought that Paige
(04:24):
Bukers is one of the best players in the country.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I've been saying it for years.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
And if you go back and you look at her
numbers throughout her career and you see exactly who she was,
you would have understood that she's one of the best
players to ever ever play the game of college basketball.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
And I know that signs.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Hyperbolic or whatever in the moment type of thing. But
if you go back and you look at her history
and I have some of those career stats, her resume
since twenty twenty one, I mean, excuse me, since she
was the number one ranked player in her class, she
was the Gatorade Player of the Year in twenty twenty one,
she became a first team All American. She was the
(05:09):
Wooden Award winner. She was the Biggest in twenty twenty one.
All this is in the twenty one she was the
Big East Player of the Year. She was the Big
East Tournament Most Outstanding Player. In twenty twenty two. She
was on the NCAA All Tournament Team. She was First
Team All American twenty twenty four. Twenty twenty four, she
was the Big East Player of the Year, Big East
(05:30):
Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Twenty twenty five, she was the
Player of the Year in the Big East Tournament MVP,
and she was the Way Trophy winner. She's a projected
number one. And oh yeah, to cap it off, she
was a national champion.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
And there's the Buzzer.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
Kid page in thes his title number.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Twelve for you.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Con I mean, think about that, broh the title, the
(06:26):
way that she's gone about it, dealing with the injuries,
finding a way to get it done.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
And now she.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Sits at the top as a national champion. You know
who wasn't a national champion? Caitlyn Clark. She got all
the hype, she got all the belief. She was their
team at Iowa, no doubt about it. They had a
couple of pieces there, but Gino Ariema twelve national championships
(06:54):
now twelve, and think about the players that he has
on those teams. Al along the way, I started watching
U Come with Rebecca Lobo. Then you start going all
the way through Sue Bird, who just now was named
to the Hall of Fame. She's a Hall of Famer now.
And you start looking at Diana Tarasi, you look at
(07:17):
throughout the history, Maya Moore, you know, Tina Charles Ari
i'ma always find one, don'ty yep, Rianna Stewart, Yeah. I
mean you start looking at all of those teens and
you you're like, wow, it's unbelievable to watch them and
what they've been able to do. And you know what,
(07:39):
Paige Stewart and scores Connecticut, scores Connecticut.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Come on, like Paige. We had It wasn't an argument.
We just had a difference of opinion and style of
play because I put more the emphasis on a scorer,
and you said that Page is a better basket ketball
player in her totality, and I said, ju ju, you
(08:06):
said either way, we're both right.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
It was like, we're both right.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
The thing that's unstated about Page is the two steals
a game. She is a willing, more than willing defensive player,
as good a balance as she is an offensive player.
And she'll have one or two blocks at times too.
So that's that's the big plus to me. But her
(08:32):
percentages are so high eighty eight percent and free throw
fifty three, in scoring forty two and three point shooting.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
But that's not the thing that makes her great.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
The thing that makes her great is the thing that
made Magic Johnson great.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
She makes all of the players around her.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Better because the fact that she draws the attention to her.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Right, Larry Bird a better player.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
And a better scorer than he was just an individual guy,
you know, And I believe that you need one of
those players on your team. I think klaylond Clark is
one of those, you know, like she just makes the
people around her better. But she is also a scorer,
(09:30):
which is you know, Anthony Edwards is a scorer, he's
not yet making all the people around him better. When
he does, we'll see Shay Gilders Alexander because they have
the same abilities.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
I mean, you know, as I watched this team throughout
the years, as I said before, and I just watched
her journey as a basketball player, and you said something
that was really really true is she plays the game
the whole way, like she's not more dimensional, and I was.
There was a couple of times they got her the
(10:07):
ball and she gave it back to Fuzz, who was
really getting it done right. She wasn't trying to go Yeah,
she wasn't forcing anything and she was Fud ended up
being the MVP of the tournament in the game, but
that's because she was so talented and what she was
able to do was lead this team.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
But Page could have been, you know, selfish.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
But they had two ladies that went twenty fourth and five,
one went twenty four and fifteen, Page seventeen and six.
I mean, they just were dominant the entire time and
it was really impressive.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Think about that.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
The national championship game was eighty two to fifty nine,
and U condominated them earlier this year at South Carolina,
and then they did it again in the now championship game.
Great stuff, congratulations, great season for the ladies of the
Texas Longhorns, and we'll talk more about them this week,
(11:09):
but the national championship game for the ladies was yesterday. Tonight,
we have the men University of Houston versus the Florida Gainers.
Mark and I both have Florida, but my heart is elsewhere,
and I'll tell you why in the next moment, right.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Here on a long horn.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Monday edition of The Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff
right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Mike Harball Hart World's Strongest Men, and WWE Hall of
Famer the Mark Henry joining me as always and coming
(11:45):
up in the next segment, we will talk a lot
about Texas baseball big weekend at the Dish, and let
me just tell you it was exciting to be a
part of it. When I'll give you all that details
on that, but right now, we witnessed one of the
greatest comebacks in NCAA history.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
And what do I mean by that?
Speaker 1 (12:11):
The University of Houston Cougars were all left for nothing.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
It was over for them.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
There was no expectation for them to win that game,
to win that game, and you sit across and you
watch Bruce Pearl's face the entire time.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Not Bruce Pearl, I'm sorry about that. In that big game,
the way.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
That it was going down, the entire way, and I
was trying to figure this out. Mark during that basketball game,
you're looking across and you're saying, what the heck is
going on? You're looking at the University of Houston and
how they were attacking the entire time in that matchup,
(13:01):
and you're thinking to yourself, are they gonna win this game?
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Can they win this game?
Speaker 2 (13:07):
You wonder why Kevin Sampson was a guy that I
wanted to come here, right because like he's just tough man.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
When Duke, when Duke is over there and you got
Cooper Flag playing the way that he was. Proctor, you
look at ye Proctor though, but Proctor was he was
the huckleberry because he was He's a terrible free throw shooter.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
He is awful from the free stuff to work on, yep.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
But Shier was over there at panicking. But I want
you to listen. Duke led by fourteen points, fourteen points
with eight.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Minutes left in the game.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
They were up by nine with two minutes and six
seconds left in the game. They led by six with
thirty four seconds left. But guess what, You play the
game until the game is over. And I want you
to listen to this comeback and how it all took place.
(14:08):
It was the craziest two minutes of basketball that I saw.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
But I would gribls oh reaching over reach technicals, that's
a technical. So see on James trying to invound it,
Tuggler trying to defend it and made contact with the ball,
a technical foul.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Canipple ninety at the flival line. Why not pick him?
You do not want to foul that.
Speaker 6 (14:37):
Canipple Try Caniffol does by Tuggler. Houston comes up with
a defensive stand. Six to four game, two seconds to go.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
No threes, no fouls.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
You're thinking if you're dude, Charp loses his footing use
that now with thirty five seconds left.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Sharp the chump Berber. He's got it.
Speaker 6 (14:56):
Wow, tossing by James, float it upstairs, not to light
clay by shot.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Wilson goes back. He finds no, God, that's.
Speaker 6 (15:09):
Tutter b It cuts into one. How about that week's
side rebound James bounce kutt Nipple, Proctor will gotta give,
gotta give it, and he does. Twenty seconds left, Wilson
fouls him. It's a one on one, so good fly
(15:30):
cut his hand on it. Oh, we got flag over
the top. It is, and now it's gonna be one
and one for Houston with nineteen point six to Plaine,
deep breath for Roberts Tongua.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
How about with this kid, this one's for the lead.
It's good.
Speaker 6 (15:55):
A thirteen to three run over the last two minutes.
They enter it to James, sign out, get it in
canipple fifteen seconds left.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Now it's flaying.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
Hits his move cliff back h flag short river.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Houston.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
You say got a foul three point four.
Speaker 6 (16:19):
When they called the foul, there's two point five. Houston
is in the driver's seat. I would look for Calvin
to call the time out if he makes this one
second one for Crier so poised the same thing in
bound trap and maybe give it if Houston view foul
(16:40):
right away to pitch long one James knock away cut
Nippon stuck outside.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Talk to Tosses about it's not God.
Speaker 6 (16:51):
The dream remains alive for the Houston Cougars.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
It's the dude.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Got a technical for touching the ball out of bounds
to start this hole in middle school. Don't touch the
dude out of bounce. You can't touch the guys out
of bounds and then all of a sudden that it
flipped the momentum flip for some reason because he goes
and makes a free throw and you're sitting there and
you're thinking it's over for the Houston Cougars.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Everything that could have went wrong for Duke went wrong absolutely,
And you know why, panic because of being young players.
And what did the coach and I do? What do
you do when you see your team spiraling out of control?
You call the time out? Do you think do you
(17:40):
think I think it would have made a difference if
you said, guys, you're gonna win the game, don't make
any more mistakes. We got twenty five seconds left. For
thirty four seconds, yup, and Cooper go in bounds the ball.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
I don't understand some of these out of bounds plays
because of the fact of who you need to have
with the ball. You know what I'm saying, like, get
the ball to your playmakers, or get it in and
get it right back to him.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Right, that's the guy that in bounds the ball comes in,
give it right back to him.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Yep. Like it's It was very frustrating watching.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
I was happy for Houston, but I didn't pick Houston,
and I'm watching it from you know, Oh my god,
this is good. Oh my god, this is bad at
the same time. But the whole point is like there
was a you can tell who the venturing coach was.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Oh yeah, Kelvin Sampson kept his team locked in and
he basically told you, we don't quit.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
We're gonna play till the very end.
Speaker 7 (18:54):
Well, thanks, coach.
Speaker 8 (18:56):
You came over and you said, a heck of a game,
one run ten minutes.
Speaker 9 (19:00):
How would you describe tell the resiliency of your team?
Speaker 7 (19:04):
Dallas frets there, ye, dude, no one ever loses in
anything as long as you don't quit telling you you quit.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
And I don't.
Speaker 7 (19:13):
Care that you've lost hard thing in our timeouts that
we've been here before. It's not that we're down twinning.
It's not like we were playing great. We felt like
if we could get it close enough to put some
game pressure.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
On them, then something that could happen.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
But all the credit, all the credit, all the glory
goes to God, and all the credit goes to these
unbelievable young men.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
I get because I'm so blessed. I get the coastals guts.
Speaker 9 (19:38):
You talk about these kids You've talked.
Speaker 10 (19:40):
All season long about the experience factor, a.
Speaker 7 (19:43):
Guy like this Juan, what they did.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Down the stretch.
Speaker 9 (19:47):
How lucky is it to have these guys on your
team in these moments.
Speaker 7 (19:51):
Well, it's lucky to have them, but it's not lucky
that they do what they do.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Because that's work. They trust their work, they trust their teammates.
You know, I hear what people say.
Speaker 7 (20:03):
You know that God's great. John Shire is a is awesome.
But don't sleep on Houston. Don't don't sleep on Houston.
We weren't thirty four and four playing playing in the
toy Poodle League. We were nineteen to one in the
Big Twelve. Planning the Big twelve helped us. Shout out
(20:24):
to my Big twelve brothers, you know, coach Brett or
Mark and all the great coaches in the Big twelve.
Speaker 11 (20:30):
Well you're headed to a national championship game on Monday.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
That's what it's all about. Yeah, that's what it's all about.
Think about that.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
He's like, we didn't We wasn't playing to just get
scrubs in the Big twelve, the Poodle League.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
We got a poole league over.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
There hooping, and this Houston basketball team somehow, some way
finds another way.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
To get back to the championship game.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
And he wanted to pay homage to all of the
coaches in the Big Twelve because everybody talked about how
the SEC had the best conference and that was the
most competition.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
That was a little poke at everybody.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Well, I tell you this much, they're gonna have to
do it again because they're playing an SEC team tonight
in the Florida Gators.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
The SEC is.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
In the game Big twelve SEC. We'll see who gets
the dub. Coming up next, We're gonna see who got
the dubs this weekend, and your Texas Longhorn showed up
and they showed out, and I'll talk about it right
here on the morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff right
(21:35):
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. This
weekend was a fun weekend for the University of Texas
and all facets of the university.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
You start to look.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Around and truly get the mindset of this university and
what they've been able to do over the past few weekends.
My Man Bianco, the Sports information director at the University
of Texas posted that Texas Men's tennis won the Lone
(22:09):
Star Showdown with the victory and became SEC champs. Golf
went out into a tournament and became CO champs. Texas
softball is the number one team in the country, and they.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Go and Marcus, you got a chance to work this.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
This weekend, Texas softball sweeps Missouri to stay at the
top of the SEC conference. You look at Texas Beach volleyball.
That's right, that's right, Beach volleyball. They were five and
zero in Tallahassee, and they had three top ten victories
against some other teams. And Texas women tennis had two
(22:50):
SEC wins this weekend, but the weekend belonged to Texas baseball.
Texas baseball went up against the number three ranked team
in the country, the Georgia Bulldogs. I was there, I
was at the dish, I was on the call all
weekend long, so I got to see first hand how
this all went down. Is it safe to say that
(23:12):
you may be the good luck John.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Well, this team's been winning a lot of games.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
This hadn't been winning a lot of games, but they
won all of them that.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
You were at.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
That's very true. That is very true. So ever since
I've been at a lot of these games, they have
found a way to win. This Georgia team is one
of the most prolific teams in college baseball right now.
Their offense coming into the weekend had eighty five home
runs as a team. The Texas pitching handled their business
(23:40):
this weekend. Texas on Friday Night, great pitching performance by
Jared Spencer. He went out there and dealt was able
to throw all four pitches for strikes and handled that win.
Texas wins the game five to one. But you come back,
you got a chance to win the series. Struggled to
look litle bit halfway through the ball game, but Texas
(24:03):
found another way to get the victory.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
You look at what.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Harrison Luke Harrison was able to do, going five and
two thirds innings, didn't have his best stuff, still had
nine strikeouts. And then Max Grubbs. Max Grubbs has warmed
the hearts of Texas fans because of what he was
able to do last year with all the injuries the
Texas pitching staff has had, but he's found a way
(24:28):
to get back into this and he comes in in
relief and gets the w Jalen Flores was zero for
three with three strikeouts leading into the big inning where
Texas takes the lead. In the seventh inning, Texas just
finds a way to get wins. And then on Sunday
(24:50):
Sunday is a big time matchup.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
You want to win.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
On Sunday, Texas wins the game seven to four. On
Saturday they win the series. But in this league, you
have to win on Sunday. And what were they able
to do? They were able to win on Sunday, but
it took a lot. And that man Mama that goes
jenln floor is again, but.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
It's a whole run.
Speaker 5 (25:13):
I'll po taco over the right field wall and the
Loghoords are back in front, free to two.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
When you clutch your clutch, and this young man has
always come up in those big moments. We were talking
a little bit about slowing down your heart rate. This
guy's cool as they come with runners in scoring position.
And not only that, not only that, on the call,
on the call, I was there with the great Craig Way.
My weekend was filled with exciting times, home runs, great pitching.
(25:41):
Friday night, you got Will Gasparino, who is hotter than
fish Grease being able.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
To hit a home run.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Borba hitting a home runs, Yeah, that's real hot. Then yesterday,
excuse me, Saturday, you have big hit after big hit.
Jack Stewart was able to hit a home run, first
home run as a Texas Longhorn in a big moment.
But no moment was bigger than the one yesterday with
our men. Rylean Galvan, who if you've ever seen him
(26:10):
at the plate, you know he means business and he delivered.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
Here's the three vout, one strike pitch. Galvan swings Left's
a high flight ball, This one out the deep right center.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Back to the Warling truck. You'll kid say good night
to it.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
A walk off home run.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
To end it.
Speaker 5 (26:26):
It's a sweep of the third right Georgia Bulldogs. Ryland
Galvan walks it off over the right field wall, and
Texas sweeps Georgia to win the series.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
I'm not gonna lie. I was just I was scared.
I was scared. Why was you scared?
Speaker 2 (26:48):
I let I let everybody talk me into Oh, George's many, dude.
They hit for the they hit for the parking lot.
They don't even hit for the sign. They don't hit
for the fens. They hit for the parking lot, and
I was like, oh man, we got it. We just
got a weather the storm, and I and you play
to win the game. And Texas went out there and
(27:11):
played no fear. You watch that game and you can
hear it on the call. It was always under control. Always.
There was never a point you said in the middle
innings that there was it looked like Texas was gonna
faint a little bit, but for whatever reason, they always
got a strikeout that turned the ball back in Texas
(27:34):
Faber yep.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
So I mean, what a what a wonderful performance.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Yeah, not only that, you look at what I saw
from jalen Flora's. Jalen Flora's played made some unbelievable plays
at shortstop to keep them from scoring and extending innings.
You also had some plays in an outfield where Tommy
Farmer cuts off a ball in the gap to set
up first and third ball gets past him, the runners
(28:02):
scoring from first base. The runner on that hit it
is standing on second and you got a different scenario. Well,
he cuts them off, set up to double play, ball
gets hit to Kimball. Shustler at first base, shout out
to Kimball. Shustler guy that used to be a catcher
learning how to play first base. Now he's pretty much
taken over that job and saved a lot of runs
(28:23):
for this Texas Longhorned team. Got the guy out at
home played. We've had a bunch of exciting moments in
during the season, but for the Texas Longhorns to sweep
another series.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
They won.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Three of the four series that Texas has won in
the SEC have been sweeps, so that just goes to
show you how talented this team is. And going into
these extra inning ball games, Texas has found a way
to get it done. When you start to look back
at it. Going into it, they were zero and two
(28:58):
in extra inning ball games. They found a way with
a walk off fashion, big time swing by Rolin Galvan.
But the pitching staff did a heck of a job
as well. And Dylan Valentis is a star on this team.
He could come out of the bullpen. He's been able
to achieve a lot of stuff in a short period
(29:18):
of time and eventually coach said that he will be
a starter at some point, but right now he's doing
everything he possibly can to keep this team rolling. Good stuff,
good stuff right there, congratulations, and the new rankings will
come out, I believe at eight o'clock, so we will
find out where Texas will be ranked after an unbelievable
(29:40):
weekend by the Longhorns. We talked him, there'll be either
two or one for sure, possibly number one when we
come back. A record that no one thought was going
to be broken has been broken, and we'll talk about
it right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio
thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
Now's your chance.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
That's right, folks, now's your chance to get to win
a pair of ticket excuse me to see Dirk's Bentley.
That's right, Dirk's Bentley May the twenty ninth at the
Moody Center. All you got to do is get over
to that iHeartRadio app search AM thirteen hundred the Zone,
tap that red microphone, and of course leave the word Bentley.
(30:25):
Bentley is your keyword today to win a chance to
get a pair of tickets to go see Dirk's Bentley
May the twenty ninth at the Moody Center. Also, if
you're on that app, go ahead and make sure that
you preset us as your number one preset, and of
course you can send an alarm to wake up to
us every morning.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
But right now you get.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
A chance to win a pair of tickets. All right,
let's get into it. Because, as we know, records are
made to be broken. And for a long time, nobody
what's that You're gonna catch Barry Bonds single season home
run record. You never thought that you're gonna see the
(31:08):
stolen based record of Ricky Henderson be broken. You know
why because it's very rare because the game has changed
so much. But now there has been a record that
has been broken, and it has set dormant for thirty
one years. And now there's a new scoring leader in
(31:34):
the NHL.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
It his own sold there.
Speaker 6 (31:38):
No, he's just trying to find a seam and all that's.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
Hey, I'm gonna try to force it to if he's open.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Here's Alex Ovechkin has now become the hockey world's all
time leading score And if you know anything about hockey,
(32:06):
and I know a lot of you out there do,
it is a game that is very very physical. There
are guys, there's bruisers that are out there. There are
people that are just trying to knock your head off. Well, now,
alex Ovechkin, Alexander the great is now the all time
(32:27):
leading goal scorer in the NHL, passing Wayne Gretzky, and
Wayne Gretzky said, I want to be the first to
congratulate you.
Speaker 12 (32:38):
Thank you all so much, Alex. I said, I'd be
the first guy to shake your hand when you broke
the record.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
And I wrote this team and.
Speaker 12 (32:53):
One last thing before Alex speaks. One of the great
things about my setting the record, Colleen Howe bought my
wife a beautiful gift and have a wonderful note. And
we know how the legacy of hockey passes down, but
so it does it with the families and the wives.
So my wife has something very beautiful for his lovely
(33:17):
wife that we want to pass on by mister Leones. Congratulations.
And when I set the record, they bought me a
Rose Royce, So you got your work.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Hut Hey, he's making sure that he gets that Rolls
Royce for Ovechkin. I mean, hockey is a very physical sport,
a lot of talent to gods, you see it all
the time. And for someone to be able to play
as long as he did, to break the record in
the exact amount of games that Wayne Gretzky did it
(33:53):
in front of Wayne Gretzky is something that I'm sure
a lot of folks will always remember. Don't know who's
gonna break it after because of the simple fact that
the guys are getting older, the game is still getting faster,
so we will see. But congratulations to alex Oveshkin, Alexander
(34:15):
the Great, as they say, speaking of the great, Vladimir
Guerrero Junior has found a way to agree on a
fourteen year, five hundred million dollar contract extension pending at
(34:36):
physical the sources said. On Sunday night, Jeff Passing put
that out there. It is only the second, I believe,
no third largest in Major League history. Juan Soto's fifteen years,
seven hundred and sixty five million dollar contract with the
Mets and then show Hel Tani's ten year, seventy million
(34:58):
dollar contract with the Dodgers is something that you continue
to look at. I'm gonna tell you this, I played
with Vladimir Guerrero, the father of Junior, and he was
a guy that was just super talented. You knew Vladi
was gonna be Junior was gonna be good as well.
But here's the thing about him, He's changed everything about himself.
(35:22):
He slimmed down. He came in focused, and he also
said that they were not going to negotiate the deal
during the season. After the sides failed to get an
agreement before he reported the spring training, but they continued
to talk and they ended up getting it done. They
tried to sign him for a long term deal a
(35:42):
while back, but to no avail, and now here he
is being able to finish second when show hail Tani.
In twenty twenty one, he had a breakout season. He
finished second to Otani in the al MVP. He had
three eleven with forty eight homers in one hundred and
eleven RBIs. But now he gets an opportunity to stay
(36:08):
within that Canada wall and play for the Toronto Blue Jays.
He was born in Canada, He's a Canadian by birth,
and now he gets to stay with their where his
father was a longtime superstar for the Montreal Expos. Now
all they need to do is get Bobashek to sign
(36:31):
a contract in their young phenoms, because that's what you're
starting to see a lot of young players, superstars are
staying within the organization, and the organization is trying to
bring those guys up.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
You look at what they were able.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
To do with Bobby Witt Junior with the Kansas City
Royals being able to keep him there. That is something
that these teams need to start looking at before the
collective bargaining agreements and the Players Association and start changing
some of their ways. If they can get them signed early,
that's the best way to do it. But I'm looking
at what these Blue Jays are gonna do moving forward,
(37:09):
and if they could keep Bobashett within that team, this
has the makings of being one of those teams that
are going to be in the conversation for quite some time.
So congratulations to Vlati Dotti. We like the party, Junior
of getting fourteen years, five hundred million dollars. And by
the way, they tax you in Canada big time, so
(37:32):
you're gonna have to pay the piper on that one.
Our number one is in the books. Our number two
is just around the corner. Our number two we will
talk in fl will also preview the National Championship game
between the Houston Cougars and the Florida Gators. But first,
Texas football coach Sart and his wife have a new
(37:55):
member to the family. We'll talk about it right here
on the Morning Kickoff on sport Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff, hour number
two of the Morning Kickoff right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Yukon is the national champion
and women's sports for basketball as they beat South Carolina
(38:19):
and gave them a real big butt whoopin the University
of Houston had the greatest comeback in NCAA College basketball
men's Division I basketball history, and Kelvin Samson is all
about that smoke. Texas baseball has a sweep against the
number three team Georgia Bulldogs, and Alex Ovachkin is the
(38:43):
all time leading scorer in hockey.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Coming up next at this time.
Speaker 1 (38:49):
We're gonna talk a little bit of Texas football and
the expectations of this upcoming season and the expectations of
one coach, Steve Sarksian. But I want to let you
know that tomorrow eight am we will have Chrisdale County
Athletic Director of the University of Texas joining us to
(39:09):
talk all things Texas Longhorns. Obviously, the journey with the
trip to the NCAA Final Four for the women coaching
change in college basketball for the Texas Longhorns men, and
of course all things about the spring game. So don't
forget tomorrow. Set your alarms eight am. Chrisdale County will
(39:31):
be on with us tomorrow talking all things Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
Over the weekend.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
Actually, on Friday, the news broke that coach Sarkesian and
his wife Lauriel welcomed a baby boy into the family.
Speaker 3 (39:48):
And the interesting part about.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
That was everybody was trying to figure out they were,
like inn, Coach sark a little bit old to be
having a kid, But as someone who is old and
have had kids at a time.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
In life, it's all worth it.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
I've had so much fun and I know that Coach
sark will too. But you know, it is important to
understand that this team and coach sark is destined to
play for championships.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
They've been talking about it. Back to back years.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Texas has made it to the final four in football.
Back to back seasons they come up short one play
to change the whole trajectory of this Texas football team.
They've done it in recruiting, they've done it in coaching,
and now they get a chance to build. So coach
sark had met with Colt McCoy on his news show
(40:43):
and he talked about building a national championship team.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
We've built a program here.
Speaker 8 (40:52):
I really feel like this is exactly where we're supposed
to be because I think back to five and seven, this.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
Is not a relevant program anymore.
Speaker 8 (40:58):
Keep grinding away, and then in year three to win
the Big Twelve in our final year, which was a
huge deal for us, right because we hadn't won it
since you that's crazy. It's been fourteen years. Get to
the College Football Playoff and be one play away.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
From the national championship game.
Speaker 8 (41:13):
Go into Alabama and beat Alabama on the road only
time ever Nick Saven got beat at home by double digits.
And then going into this last year like they're going
into the SEC.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
You know they're not going to be ready for this.
Speaker 9 (41:25):
I don't think Texas is a top five team in
the SEC.
Speaker 8 (41:28):
Next thing, you know, we're number one team in the
country for a few weeks there in the middle of
the season, we're in the semi finals. We're a play
away from going to the national championship again. And I'm
hearing the same stuff like I hope they're not gonna
be able to do it. Again, how are they going
to replace all these guys? And we just signed the
number one class in the country. We've built this thing
the right way, and now I don't want to.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Just sustain it.
Speaker 8 (41:48):
I want to keep finding ways to keep getting better.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
And that's the beautiful thing about this Texas Longhorned team
is they want to continue to find ways to get better.
They want to continue to find the ability to make
things happen. So you look out there and you look
into transfer portal. That was something that we have had
conversations about. You go and find those little pieces that
(42:12):
you are missing in certain situations. You go out there
and you recruit well at the quarterback position. Mike Leech
used to say all the time, if you don't have
a quarterback, you don't have a squad.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
And that is so.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
True because you can put ancillary pieces, but if you
don't have the conductor of that band, it's not going
to work out the right way. So what we've been
able to see is the ability for Texas to get better.
Speaker 3 (42:41):
I talk about it all the time.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
The continuity of the coaching staff is the key to
everything in this ability to continue to play well. You
start to look at all the changes that was happening
when Texas was in that spiral. There was so much
that was going on, and a lot of the coaches
kind of fed in to the fan base of oh
my god, this offense is terrible, this defense is terrible,
(43:04):
special teams is terrible. But you can't do that. You
gotta be steady at the course. One thing that coach
Sark talked about is I got to get big upfront
and get ready for the SEC. When Texas was five
and seven, they found a way to get it done.
They started moving up eight and five and then they
had the playoff run back.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
To back season.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
Nobody thought Texas was going to be able to go
into the SEC.
Speaker 3 (43:28):
And do anything.
Speaker 1 (43:29):
All they did was play for an SEC championship. So
you take a moment and you look at what's going
on at this program, and it all starts with obviously
the coaching has kind of changed, but you have to
go get those players. And then you look at the
last two seasons. The NFL Draft is coming up. You
look at eleven players being invited last season to the
(43:54):
NFL Combine. This year, fourteen players are invited to the
NFL Combine. The conversation about developed development. Now has totally
changed for this Texas football team, and it starts with
a quarterback. And here's an opportunity for a quarterback like
Quinn Yours. Be quiet, Gooch, I know you about to
(44:16):
spit out your coffee. But Quinn Yours has changed his
way and now he's getting ready for the NFL draft.
Speaker 10 (44:23):
Also in high school, I rocked a mullet and it
decided to kind of have a mind of its.
Speaker 13 (44:34):
Own and kind of blew up a little bit. Kept
it for my first two years in college. It was fun,
well lasted, but it was hard to take care of
us towards the end.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
There it's time to get.
Speaker 11 (44:43):
Rid of it.
Speaker 3 (44:44):
Now you cut the hair, all the bad habits go
with it. That's about as good as he's looked.
Speaker 13 (44:47):
The kids a baller wheen you were as quarterback Texas hooker, you.
Speaker 5 (44:52):
Are working players.
Speaker 14 (44:56):
Let's look.
Speaker 13 (45:00):
I had nine scholarship offers before I started a game
in high school for the varsity team. I got my
first scholarship offer from North Texas going into seventh grade.
I'm at a summer camp trying to just get better,
you know, get coached by some of the college quarterback coaches.
Came up to me after the camp and we're talking
to me, you know, asking how old I was. And
(45:21):
it was funny because they asked me if I had
a Twitter, and I told them I didn't even have
a phone yet ended up being the number one player
coming out of high school going into the college.
Speaker 7 (45:28):
Now yours a downfield shot. He could have dropped it
hit a bucket.
Speaker 13 (45:33):
I would describe my style as controlled aggression. Our system
at Texas was built around making the quarterback successful, and
then my job was just to get the ball in
the playmaker's hands, so taking the shots when they're there
and setting up.
Speaker 3 (45:44):
The shots with other players.
Speaker 6 (45:46):
When do youwers lays it over top with the safety
for a score.
Speaker 13 (45:50):
My resiliency is unlick no other. My mental toughness go
along with it, and just my poison composure and big.
Speaker 3 (45:56):
Moments I think sets me apart.
Speaker 5 (45:57):
And now he's gotta running in a cellar, Queen, you
worst coach for the US touchdown.
Speaker 13 (46:05):
Draft. Knight is just going to be a lot of emotion,
a lot of happiness is going to be around my family,
some of my loved on some friends. Just to be
able to experience all that together, I think it's gonna
be super important because I'm a.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Big relationship guy.
Speaker 13 (46:17):
I love having relationships with my loved ones, you know,
just have an amazing support group, and for them to
be there with me and experiencing that with me, I
think that we're obviously.
Speaker 15 (46:25):
Going to remember that for a lifetime.
Speaker 1 (46:31):
Definitely gonna remember it for a lifetime. But the most
important part is you have to go out there and
be developed. I think he's gonna end up going to
a team, probably a little bit later than expected initially,
but he's opened.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
A lot of eyes. He had a great pro day,
and a lot of it is going to be where
he fits.
Speaker 14 (46:51):
We know.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
We talked to Clarence Hill of the Fort Water not
Fort Worst Star anymore, he's got a new venture.
Speaker 3 (46:58):
But Clarence Hill told.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
Us that he believed that Quinn could be a Dallas
Cowboy at some point, being in the Metroplex, being able
to come in and learn and develop where you're not
the prize possession. You can just take your time, be healthy,
not have to wear that much. And I believe that
Quinn will get an opportunity to do so on a
(47:21):
better football team. You look at those other top picks,
that are out there. You look at cam Ward Shador
Sanders who had his Pro day not too long or
last week. Those are guys that will have a lot
of pressure on them. If you can sit back and
go and develop, or the pressure's not on you, you
(47:42):
can have a long career. Colt McCoy was recognized as
the most winning his quarterback in college football history until
Kellen Moore beat him the next year. But Colt went
on to have a long career as a backup where.
Speaker 3 (47:58):
He didn't have to get beat up.
Speaker 1 (47:59):
The only time he got beat up is when he
went to Cleveland and they were giving him the wrong place.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
That's right, man, Genie, we hear you. We know that
you did that.
Speaker 1 (48:07):
But I believe that Quinn's gonna be okay in the
NFL no matter what team he goes with, if he's
put in the right position. But going back to what
I started this off with, development has been the key
for this Texas football team. What we've seen from coach
Sart being able to have the same offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator,
(48:32):
special teams coordinator. That means that the messaging stays the same.
You can bring in other assistant coaches. I think what
Chris Jackson has been able to do with this team
has been unbelievable when you start to look at how
they have developed along the way the wide receiver card
back to back seasons, You're gonna have possible first round
(48:55):
picks when you think about who they are, when you
think about who they have brought into the program. You
had at a nine Mitchell ad Mitchell come in first
round pick. Ran Well, you went and got Golden from
the University of Houston and now he too has been
(49:17):
on the radar as a high draft pick. So what
Texas has been able to do to develop, recruit and
get the best recruiting classes in the country, that is
why you've seen these numbers go from no invites to
eleven invites to fourteen invites.
Speaker 3 (49:35):
Wow. Keep it moving, fellas, keep it moving.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
Coming up next, speaking of the draft, the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (49:41):
Uh, I know it's rough, but we.
Speaker 1 (49:44):
Got to talk about them and the expectations, and we'll
hear from coach Schottenheimer as well as Ryan Clark right
here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. The
Texas Longhorns men's baseball team swept the Georgia Bulldogs this
(50:08):
weekend and now are ranked number two in the polls.
That's right, Texas is right behind Arkansas as the number
two team in the country after the sweep against the
Georgia Bulldogs. Arkansas, Texas, LSU, Clemson, and Tennessee round out
(50:30):
the top five. Texas is also number two in the
Baseball America poll as they continue to get better and
better every week. After a walk off win and a
sweep of the Georgia Bulldogs, I'll give you the rest
of that ranking in the next segment, but right now
(50:51):
I want to talk Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys have
now getting themselves in a position for the NFL Draft,
and I was talking about this over the weekend. When
you start to look at the Dallas Cowboys in the
expectations of the draft, you truly have to give credit
(51:12):
where credit is due. Over the last few seasons, the
Dallas Cowboys have truly had good drafts. You look at
their players and you look at who they have taken.
They've done a really, really good job with their number
one pick. You look at twenty twenty it was Cede Lamb.
You look at twenty twenty two, it was Tyler Smith.
(51:35):
You look at number twenty four, the twenty fourth, twenty
twenty four draft, and you got Tyler Geidon, the young
man from Maynard, Texas. The only time in twenty twenty
three that you really starting to look at the Cowboys
and question it was Mozzi Smith.
Speaker 3 (51:52):
Mozzi Smith was.
Speaker 1 (51:53):
Somebody that originally you thought was going to be a
huge factor, but he ended up not panning out thus far.
Speaker 3 (52:02):
Not saying that he's not, but yeah.
Speaker 1 (52:06):
You start looking at it and you're like, well, maybe
maybe not. But the Cowboys essentially have had decent draft picks.
They you remember when they had the offensive line Travis Frederick,
great pick for the Cowboys at the time, and they
continue to do so on that offensive line. Well, this year,
(52:29):
everybody's talking about what are they going to do at
number twelve? What are they going to do at number twelve? Well,
there's some possibilities out there. We were talking about the
possibility of getting a running back at the number twelve spot.
You're talking about the possibility of getting a wide receiver
(52:50):
at the number twelve spot. People have asked about trades.
Should they trade their pick first off? No, second off?
You I still have a lot that you need to
figure out. But Ryan Clark talked about what he thinks
the Cowboys should be doing at that draft pick spot.
Speaker 14 (53:11):
Ar see, what does Dallas need to look at adding
in the draft later this month?
Speaker 9 (53:17):
Well, you know, I got to hang out with Adam
Schefter last night at this big event, and everybody just
pretty much let me go wherever I wanted to be
VIP as long as I held Schester's backpack and phones
as we walked around. But I did run into Brian Schottenheimer,
who's excited about his opportunity in Dallas. But the big
thing is, who are you going to add to Cede Lamb?
Who are you going to add to Jake Ferguson. Are
(53:39):
we going to find some skilled players that could create
big plays offensively? Everything seemed so hard for the Dallas
Cowboys last year.
Speaker 3 (53:47):
We were looking for Cedee.
Speaker 9 (53:49):
Lamb to make a play, and then once Dak Prescott
was going, it didn't seem or they didn't seem to
have a playmaker outside of eighty eight and the occasional
opportunity for Jake fergus.
Speaker 3 (54:00):
And for me, it's going to be a good place
to go.
Speaker 9 (54:02):
Out and get one of those peed wide receivers who
you can add the CD lamp that could be an extreme,
great complimentary number two, and get the running back later
in the draft.
Speaker 1 (54:12):
Well, and there is a lot of running backs that
are on that list that you could possibly look at
later in the draft. You started talking about Ashton genty,
but there's also Trevion Henderson who US has Texas Longhorn fans.
We got a chance to see in that position. Ohio State.
He ran a four to four to three at the
NFL scouting Combine. He had a seventy five yard touchdown
(54:35):
against Cowboys in the playoffs. Mark's favorite guy, Cam Scattaboo.
He thinks that he can be a piece that could
go with the Dallas Cowboys. Qashawn Judkins running back for
Ohio State as well, is another name. Omarion Hampton, the
junior from North Carolina's getting a lot of buzz that
(54:58):
you can find later. Trevor Etn, Travis Etn's little brother.
He's another guy that might have an opportunity so you
can make a different move during that time. But Brian Schottenheimer,
who everybody still shocked is the Dallas Cowboy head coach.
He thinks that there's a possibility of even going out
(55:19):
to find a number two wide receiver for the Dallas
Cowboys to offset some of the things that are happening
with one Cede Lamb.
Speaker 15 (55:30):
Yeah, again, starting point would be best player available. You know,
you're always looking for game changers when you're picking the twelve, Like,
we don't want to ever pick twelve the game. All right,
let's be honest, we don't want to.
Speaker 3 (55:39):
We don't want to pick that high.
Speaker 15 (55:41):
But you're looking for guys that influence the game.
Speaker 3 (55:44):
How do you influence a game?
Speaker 15 (55:45):
If you rush the quarterback and you get sacks, strip sacks, humbles,
whatever it.
Speaker 3 (55:49):
Is, get score touchdowns, okay, uh, And so those are
usually I look at it this way.
Speaker 15 (55:54):
You build it from the outside end. So you got corners, receivers,
they get isolated one on one, in pass rushers, tackles
they get isolated one on one, and obviously the quarterback position.
But usually that's the way I've looked at it is
when you're building a roster kind of thing of it,
build it from outside in based on guys that get
isolated a lot because when you're isolated and you can't help.
(56:17):
It's pretty daunty task.
Speaker 3 (56:18):
Sometimes I just.
Speaker 1 (56:20):
Well, you start looking at it and you believe that
some of the questions can be answered throughout the draft.
You also look at it and some of them can
be answered throughout free agency. There are some guys that
are out there that could come in and try to
help this Dallas Cowboy football team. But we all know
the answer to the Cowboys, and that is you're gonna
(56:43):
be in the middle.
Speaker 3 (56:44):
Of the pack.
Speaker 1 (56:44):
The NFC East gonna get better. You look at what
happened with the New York Giants. The Giants go out,
they get some different players, they get a different quarterback,
a couple of quarterbacks that are gonna have an opportunity
to help lead that. You look at we already know
what the Washington Commanders were able to do last year,
(57:06):
and they're only going to get better. They've already made
some free agent moves. And then you look at what
the Cowboys are trying to do and the expectations with them.
So you got the Giants, you got the Cowboys, you
got the Commanders, and you have excuse me, the Philadelphia Eagles, who,
(57:29):
by the way, super Bowl. I mean, it is what
it is when you start to look at this NFC East,
the Cowboys have a lot of work to do. There's
a lot of expectations when it comes to this type
of team, but they have to be able to rise
to the occasion. And I don't know if Schottenheimer is
(57:51):
going to be the answer for the Cowboys, but the
effort definitely definitely has to be there. And speaking of
the Cowboys, you start looking at that team and where
do you see this going?
Speaker 14 (58:05):
Right?
Speaker 1 (58:05):
They go out and they go and get Joe Milton
as the backup after Trey Lance was traded. Don't forget
they have gotten some different numbers from Trey Lance.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
Trey Lance was not good.
Speaker 1 (58:22):
And I knew as soon as the Cowboys traded for
Trey Lance, I knew that it was going to be
a bad idea. And the reason being is if the
San Francisco forty nine ers, who gave up a lot
to go and draft Trey Lance, was already giving up
on them. And by the way, they made Rock Perdy
(58:45):
possibly getting his bag here pretty soon into a star,
and they couldn't do that with Trey Lance.
Speaker 3 (58:53):
Somebody who was supposed to be able to move.
Speaker 1 (58:55):
Around freely, be a good runner out there and change
the dynamic of that.
Speaker 3 (59:02):
And then you're gonna try to bring him in to
do what to do what? He never was going to
be the guy.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
Matter of fact, when you had the opportunity to play him,
you still played Cooper Rush. So now you go out
and you get Joe Milton and you hear some nonsense
about dad. Can you to get a realtor because he's
gonna be gone? Come on, now, that is not even
close to being the answer Joe Milton. If he was
that good, there would have been more teams going after him,
(59:32):
and you wouldn't have traded a fifth and a seventh
for seventh to go get Joe Milton. Does he have
a big arm? Is he a project? Absolutely? But there's
no way, no way that you can honestly sit here
and believe that Joe Milton is going to change the
dynamic of this Dallas Cowboy football team. I think he's
(59:54):
a good upgrade at quarterback and the backup. I think
he's more talented than Cooper Rush USh. But just like
Cooper Rush, he's not your starter, but you want to
believe that he is. I don't know funk y'all, y'all
make me nervous sometimes. Coming up next, we'll talk more
about this Texas baseball team. Softball had a great, great weekend,
(01:00:16):
and we'll hear from coach Slosnagel in his post game
after a big suite of the Georgia Bulldogs right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
the Zone. You know, normally we would be talking Mark Henry,
but Mark Henry had to step out, and this is
the time where we have to give love where love
(01:00:37):
is due. You know, Texas softball has been at the
top for quite some time now. There's the number one
team in the country and they are led by Mike
White and his incredible staff. But as we talked about
at Texas football, you have to go out and get
(01:00:58):
the right people players to be a part of your program.
So all they did was go on the road, sweep Missouri,
moved to thirty six in three or excuse me, thirty
seven in three, and just win ball games after ballgame
after ballgame. But the beautiful thing is you find certain
(01:01:22):
rather rare feats that happen. And what did Texas do well?
Teaking Cavan, who has been doing an unbelievable job all
season long. She's been top notched the entire way. On Saturday,
she decides, you know what, let me do a little
something something enthroll no no.
Speaker 3 (01:01:48):
Cavan ready.
Speaker 14 (01:01:50):
The two to two pitch swing in a miss and
that's the ballgame. Cavan has thrown a no hitter, a
five nothing run rule victory for the Low.
Speaker 6 (01:02:02):
And Chigan.
Speaker 14 (01:02:03):
Cavan finishes off the no no after the Longhorns pick
up three to get into run rule territory in the
top of the fifth.
Speaker 1 (01:02:12):
Not only does she throw a no no, she threw
a perfect game. She had no walks, they had no errors,
and they just went out And I'll take that back.
Texas had two errors, my fault. That's why I wasn't
a perfect game. Texas did have two errors, but the
ability to go out there and do it night in
and night out.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
So what does she do to follow up after the
no hitter?
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
She comes in the next game to get the save
for Texas to win the ball game against Missouri to
four to three. It was her second save of the
season and then they went on to win Game three.
So the Texas Longhorns softball team remains number one Texas
baseball has now moved up to number two after an
(01:02:57):
impressive weekend again the number three ranked at the time,
Georgia Bulldogs. All Texas does is go out there and
find ways to win, whether it's the latest with your
pitching staff, what has happened with your offense, your defense
has done such a great job. So Texas now moves
(01:03:18):
up to number two. Arkansas's number one. Texas to LSU.
Top three teams are all SEC number three, Clemson number
I mean four, Clemson number five, Tennessee Ole Miss comes
in at number six, and the Georgia Bulldogs come in
at number seven. And I got a chance to talk
(01:03:40):
to coach Slasnagel right after that impressive victory with walk
off fashion by riland Galvaughan, and let's just say he
was pretty exciting for his team. Thanks Greg, We are
here with coach Jim Slosnagle.
Speaker 3 (01:03:54):
Coach, what an unbelievable weekend pitching defense.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
And you guys found a way to sweet the Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
How sweet it is?
Speaker 11 (01:04:05):
Huh yeah, feels good, certainly, super proud of the way
Ruger battled you know early and then Lantis to give
us sixty three pitches against such a great offensive team.
That's just really really awesome, and guys are feeling good
about each other and certainly him running.
Speaker 3 (01:04:23):
I'm really glad that the Galvans on our team. He's
been banged up all all game, foul balls off of him.
Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Tough fat bats, and then he just got a pitch
he could hammer and I mean absolutely hammered it. But
that's just the way your team has been playing all
season long, no matter.
Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
Who it is. Next man up.
Speaker 11 (01:04:41):
Yeah, I mean I think I think the key in
the of bat was he laid off the breaking balls,
you know, and he's last year, years past, he's been
a guy that didn't see the breaking ball real well,
and Troy's done a really nice job of giving him,
you know, getting him in better positions where he lays
off those pitches, and he put the pitcher in a
you know, tough situation. Gasprino hitting behind and luckily, you know,
(01:05:01):
Galvant's power is to right field. He actually doesn't pull
that many balls for for homers. So uh yeah, I mean,
he hammered that one and certainly gonna win helped it out.
But super proud of our team.
Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
Valentis, you talked about it, coming in, coming out of
the bullpen.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
And going strong. I think at one point he struck
out the side like two times in a row. Big
time pitcher man.
Speaker 11 (01:05:22):
Yeah, he's he's pretty pretty special man. He can do
a lot of things for us. He's certainly going to
be a starter in the future, but right now, right now,
we need him to be in that role.
Speaker 3 (01:05:30):
And uh, he's done well. He needs to rest to
We need we need to.
Speaker 11 (01:05:34):
We need to play well on Tuesday night and give
our pitchers a little bit of a break, hopefully score
some runs.
Speaker 1 (01:05:39):
Big weekend, big crowds, congratulations, got to get it done.
Speaker 3 (01:05:42):
Fans were awesome. Yeah, awesome weekend. Glad the son came
out today. So thanks for everybody for coming out. Hug
the problem, Thank you, coach, back to you.
Speaker 11 (01:05:49):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (01:05:51):
Yeah, an unbelievable weekend for this baseball team. Big time wins,
situations that they were put in the entire weekend, and
being able to slow down, enjoy the moment, stay in
the moment. And the one thing that I've learned about
this team thus far is that they find a way
to get it done.
Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Obviously it's still a lot of baseball left in this
great conference of the SEC.
Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
But right now, what they've been able to do as
far as.
Speaker 1 (01:06:22):
Excuse me, calming the waters whenever they get a little murky,
They've been in every single ball game. There hasn't been
a game that they've played in that they haven't done
the right thing in it. You look at this team
and you say, Okay, you see Stewart, who is a
guy that probably would not have been getting a lot
(01:06:43):
of at bats if Max Blew and Adrian and Rodriguez
were not out due to their injuries.
Speaker 3 (01:06:51):
So what do they do. He gets a couple of at.
Speaker 1 (01:06:53):
Bats, come up in a clutch situation, drive the ball
out of the ballpark, and then changes the whole inner
in the stadium. I was there for all three games
this weekend. I've been to a lot of games all
season long when time permitting, and I don't have a
lot of other stuff going on. But let me just
tell you this, the fan base has changed dramatically. They
(01:07:16):
have been there, They have shown up. The weather was
not great yesterday, the sun ended up coming out. Obviously
it ended up coming out anyway because they ended up winning.
But the fact of the matter is this team brings
people out when you think about how they have performed
all season long. They have done an unbelievable job Texas
(01:07:38):
has They beat LSU, they beat Arkansas, I mean, excuse me,
they beat Georgia. They are five and one against teams
that were ranked at two and three this season. Then
they also beat oh Miss. So they have done such
a great thing with this team that coach Slasnagel has
(01:08:00):
been People are really excited. Let's just say that people
are really excited about what we've seen. We will have
the athletic director of the Texas Longhorns Crystal County on
tomorrow at eleven I mean at eight am, so we
can have a conversation about the higher what he thinks
(01:08:21):
so far. Obviously there's a lot of baseball left to
be played, but all the coaches have always talked about
you get to fifteen and sixteen wins, you're pretty much
a lock into the regional, impossibly hosting the regional.
Speaker 3 (01:08:37):
This is where they are.
Speaker 1 (01:08:38):
They are eleven and one in conference play and sitting
as the number two team in the country. We'll close
out the show and send you to Dan Patrick right
here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred is all but a way to start off the week,
especially after a great weekend by all those who are
involved on the forty eighters travel everywhere. Unfortunately, it was
(01:09:04):
a tough weekend for Vic Shaeffer and his staff.
Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
They come up a little bit short.
Speaker 1 (01:09:11):
And now we're into the off season, so we will
see what's going to happen. And if you missed any
part of the show, get over to our podcast page
wherever you get your podcasts and check out what everything
that has happened throughout the week and what we talked about.
And one of the things that I wanted to make
(01:09:33):
sure that we did was hear from Vic Shaeffer as
he started talking about he wanted to thank his seniors
and what they were able to do for him because
it was a long journey.
Speaker 4 (01:09:46):
Yeah, thank you. Well, just a couple of things. First,
just congratulations to South Carolina. Thought they played really well today.
I thought they were tough. You know, we always talk
about toughness in the game honors toughness, and I thought
they were really tough today and so congratulations to them.
(01:10:09):
You know, you're never ready for today. I don't have
the words.
Speaker 1 (01:10:19):
You have.
Speaker 4 (01:10:20):
We have four special seniors and three of them are
up here right now. She's been with me every day
that I've been at Texas five years. Taylor's been here three,
Rory's been here four, and Leah Moore's been.
Speaker 3 (01:10:35):
Here for.
Speaker 4 (01:10:37):
But you just you're never prepared, Like I don't ever
write notes down in case this happens because I don't
want to speak it into it existence. So you know,
it always catches me off guard, even after forty years.
But one thing I'll say about this group. Several things,
but number one is, man, what a blessing God blessed
(01:11:01):
me with an incredible group of young ladies that have
won thirty five games. They're SEC champions, they went to
the final four. They're just an incredible group of young ladies.
And it's hard for him, you know, for for Taylor
(01:11:21):
and Shay. Rory has an option, but these two don't.
It's the end of the road for them, and it's
it's a hard day. You don't want it to end.
You want to play on Sunday. But you know, we
ran into a good team today and we didn't play
that well. I think you can sum up our issues
(01:11:42):
today with a nine point third quarter and we shot
thirty thirty one and twenty eight percent in the second half.
And you know when Booker got in foul trouble in
the first half, that seemed.
Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
To be when things kind of changed a little bit.
And it's you know, it is what it is.
Speaker 4 (01:12:06):
But I couldn't be more proud of a group of
young ladies. They have represented our university with integrity and class.
Their commitment, each of these three, if you were to
come to a practice, you better get there an hour
early because you're going to see all three of them.
And their commitment to be an elite, to being excellent,
(01:12:32):
and and then their their commitment as teammates is really
quite remarkable, you know, y'all.
Speaker 3 (01:12:44):
As a coach, and then recruiting.
Speaker 4 (01:12:47):
Ah, sometimes you can you can look and you know,
you you go, well, I'll get another I'll get another
two guard or another five player or whatever. Sometimes you'll
replace the position, but you might not replace the person.
Speaker 3 (01:13:08):
That's true. You may replace the position, but you're not
gonna replace the person. You know.
Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
It was a unique understanding of the relationship that coach
Vic and Shae Holly have. Shae Holly's gonna be She's
leaving the university is the all time winning his basketball
player at the University of Texas. No one has played
more games and won more games than Shae Holly men
(01:13:37):
or women. And the fact of the matter that he
said that we were together since the beginning of his
tenure is something that deserves some respect in the hustle
and the ability to be on the team that long.
Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
Also, you know, we talked about Rory Harmon, and Rory
Harmon's been there for four years.
Speaker 1 (01:13:59):
Believe Rmon has to make a decision if she's going
to enter the draft, and we've seen other players from
other schools decide that they were going to come back
because the opportunities for them is much greater. You know,
I heard coach talk about Coach Vic talk about Shay
Holly and him wanting her to stick around to possibly
(01:14:21):
be an assistant coach. But she is in the Macombs
School of Business. She's doing what she needs to do.
But Rory Harmon is somebody who learned how to coach.
Last year when she was dealing with her ACL injury,
sitting on the sideline, she was the eyes and the
ears for Madison Booker, who was learning how to play
(01:14:44):
the point guard position. So the embarrassment of riches, as
people like to say, is pretty unique. When you start
to think about how this team has made its way.
This team is impressive to watch, and everybody has a
good time watching this team. Everybody has truly looked at
(01:15:07):
this team and wanted to be a part of the
success that they've had. I'll tell you right now, I
went to more women's basketball games this year than I
ever had because I wanted.
Speaker 3 (01:15:21):
To see it.
Speaker 1 (01:15:22):
My son plays point guard, plays off guard. He has
the ability to be a special player. But we always
talk about the defensive side of the ball and how
this team and how coach Vick Schaeffer has his team
moving like crazy. That is something that I've been impressed
with and us as a family has been very impressed
(01:15:47):
with it as well. So congratulations on a successful season,
a good time, a good season, a great season. I
know your goals fell up short by not winning the
national championship or even playing in the National Championship, but
I know that you've got fans everywhere in VIC Shaeffer.
Your crew has done one heck of a job. You've
(01:16:09):
talked about your scouting, You've talked about your other coaches,
but your players are the ones that go out and
execute it, and I've been very impressed to watch them play.
As we said before, Texas softball and baseball are two
of the top teams in the country. Texas baseball is
now twenty six and four, ranked number two in a
(01:16:32):
Baseball America's poll in D one Baseball's Pole, and they
are eleven and one in the SEC. They had a
walk off victory this weekend in bigtime fashion by sweeping
the number three team at the time. The Georgia Bulldogs
Softball continues to roll thirty seven in three fifteen to
zero at home, number one in the country, and they're
(01:16:54):
sitting at ten and two in the SEC. Things are
really cooking on the forty acres. Don't forget tomorrow.
Speaker 14 (01:17:02):
We will have.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
Chris Delconti at eight o'clock. Will also have Joe Cook
at seven point thirty four. You don't want to miss tomorrow, folks,
It's gonna be a great one.
Speaker 3 (01:17:15):
As always, don't.
Speaker 1 (01:17:16):
Believe everything you see, because even salt looks like sugar.
Speaker 3 (01:17:20):
Peace
