Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff on a feel good
football Friday edition of The Morning Kickoff right here on
Sports Radio and thirteen hundred iSIG Mike Harball, Harg, the
world's strongest man, Mark Henry Khalil, and of course we've
got our guy. He normally he's on Wednesdays, but with
the holidays and things that have been going on, things
have kind of moved around. But we're welcoming Danny Davis

(00:27):
of the Austin American Statesman. You can follow him at
Underscore Danny Davis and Danny, I want you to take
us inside the press box. Fourth in thirteen, season on
the line and one hell of a throw by Quinn yours.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, I mean, excuse me. I think most people have
probably thought that, you know, the season was probably you know,
may have been over after that throw with the way
that Texas kind of been pinned up against the wall.
But I actually had a story ready to hit send
about season being over. But you know that as you
saw on TV, or as you saw inside the inside

(01:06):
the stadium in Atlanta, you know, great throw by Quinn,
obviously a great route run by Matthew Golden, and they
managed to extend the game and then when the next
summertime session. But you're probably not going to find too
many more plays. Obviously fourth and five throwers Bowl is
number one, I think in most people's books. But they're
not going to find any more players. They are more
clutch than that fourth and thirteen in Atlanta by Quinn

(01:28):
and Matthews.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Man, it was great meeting you again recently, Man, But
I looked at that Quinn's situation, like, it's still a
lot of hate going on. We me and Harts, we
we we hanged the Quinn yours flag every week. We
have to to keep people from rioting in Austin. Uh,

(01:54):
don't you think that what Quinn did was something that
should have been said celebrate it rather than having so
much hate.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
I mean, I think what Quinn did in that moment
was certainly celebrated. I think most fans obviously win in
that game where we're happy. But I mean that's just
kind of the nature of being the quarterback at the
University of Texas. I mean, there were times in his
career where Vui was probably not the most beloved in
person on campus. Obviously that wasn't the case in two
thousand and five, but I think two thousand and four,

(02:27):
there's a series question going around whether or not he
should should have been benched. Early in Colt's career, there
certainly were questions, and he certainly at the end of
his run kind of erased those. But I think ever
since he take out those two guys of the equation
are the last two decades. You know, there's always been
questions about the University Texas quarterback and when you have
Arch in the wing, regardless of how you know quiet

(02:50):
Arch has chosen to stay and how much of the
team players you know Arches and you know, wanting to
take that spotlight and put it on Quinn. I think
just kind of having that shadow over there is definitely
a people. We're selfish people. We always kind of want
what's next, and I think that goes with our quarterbacks too.
And you know, unfortunately Quinn has not necessarily lived up

(03:13):
to I think the height that a lot of people
have had for him coming in. He's been a very
good quarterback, back back, but he hasn't won a championship yet.
He has at you know, continued for a hiding trophy.
He hasn't been the person that a lot of people
thought he'd been when he signed here and st that
kind of leads open the door for criticism. I think
once Quinn's time is done here in Texas and people
are actually able to kind of reflect on what he

(03:34):
did and what he accomplished, I think is probably going
to be a lot more appreciation and retrospect than in
the moment. But I mean that's also kind of what
the University Texas quarterback is. I think Quinn kind of
knew that going in, and unfortunately that leads not necessarily
being a praise in the moment, but hopefully somewhere down
the lines was actually kind of able to reflect and
appreciate what he did.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Danny, I wanted to ask you to you know, the
defense was challenged by Scott. I mean, this guy showed
the fight and the drive and determination that they didn't
have in the very first half because Texas was knocking
the crap out of him every single play in the
first half. What did you see the adjustment that they
were able to get on the Texas defense to have

(04:18):
a big second half.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
I mean, I think it helps when the Texas defense
was on the field for as much as it was.
You know, eventually, you know, those guys get tired too,
And you know, Skataboo was that dude. He was the
dude that he said he was and that the State
fans had said he was. I mean, don't take anything
away from him. And he's a great, great running back
and one of the better players Texas has seen in

(04:43):
the last four or five years. Definitely tap your hat
to him. But it also helped that the Arizona State
offense was able to stay on the field and tire
off his Texas defense. And Texas should have been happy
that that game in the second overtime because I don't
know how much longer those guys could have gone, especially
with how areas of the state was running running the football.
So you took it was a combination of two picks,

(05:04):
you know those things, you know, a great running back
and the entire defense, and you know that kind of
led to toil the way that those results were.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Dan, you speak to the running game, I mean one
point four yours and one point five yards per caring,
Uh that that doesn't usually bold well for success. Uh
how did uh? What'd you think about? You know, Texas's
running game and what can fix it?

Speaker 2 (05:30):
I mean, the other team has good players too. I mean,
it's one of those things where Texas, you know how
many games ringing in the season fourteen, they ran them
all well in eleven those games. Three of the games
they have not. Georgia obviously has a good has a
good front front seven in Arizona State played well up
front too, and it didn't help. The Texas had a
banged up offensive line and you know, rotating some excuse me,

(05:52):
some pieces around. But you know, we were talking about
this exact same question last week. We were talking about
how good the running game looked, just because how welcome
Travian and how well Jayden ran it against Clemson. So
Arizona State just playoff and Texas did not upfront. The
injuries didn't help. And also the execution this was it
wasn't there. So yeah, they're gonna have a whatever it is,

(06:14):
nine days to fix it and figure it out. But
obviously that was an area of concern. But you know,
in your quarterback stars for three thirty, I guess you
were able to kind of mask those masterless problems.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
We're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American States. Mean,
you can follow him at Underscore. Danny Davis let's fast
forward to next Friday. Obviously Texas moving and advancing to
the semi final matchup against Ohio State, a team that
they're going to open the season with next year in Columbus,
but they're getting to go to Arlington. Do you get

(06:47):
a chance to watch that game the other day as
Ohio State dismantled Oregon?

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Not really. I mean he went on right after the
Texas games, so I think we were all kind of
following along in the in the interview room what we
were doing. The interviews are obviously pretty shocked that it
was on in the background of the press box, and
every time you looked up, the scort can be getting
more and more of a blowout. Oregon was kind of
there was a moment when you're like, Okay, maybe or

(07:16):
can make this a game. Then he looked up in
his math that's not going to happen. So yeah, I
definitely need to go back and do a deeper, deeper
dive into it. But we really did. Aside from being
shocked at the score, I don't think many in the
Texas media core got to watch too much of that game.
On Wednesday, all the.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Texas women got their big win yesterday as they took
on Oklahoma on the basketball court. Rory Harmon sixteen points,
eight assist. They showed some some fight yesterday and if
you know big Schaeffer, that's all he wants to see.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Yeah, I mean this is obviously you open up SEC play,
which is a big enough a big enough deal as
it is, and then you have your biggest rival who's
also wanting to make a statement in there SEC game.
I think they said on the broadcast last night, this
was the first time that Texas and Oklahoma are both
top ten teams in the same game, so obviously two
very good teams going after. Texas was pretty hungry after

(08:11):
what happened last year when they went to Norman and
losing twice to Oklahoma last year. Rory wasn't able to
play last last year since the NIE, so you knew
she was really ready to go back out there and
show show what she could do. Isn't unfortunate? I think
that Excuse me, there were so many fouls called in
this game because you know, Madison didn't play much in

(08:32):
the first half and beers for Oklahoma was limited too,
so both teams weren't at full power. We're at full strength,
reggan beers excuse me, but you know at the end
in Texas be able to put it away at the
pre throw, and Taylor Jones said really well in the
fourth quarter. And Jordan Lee is just I mean, she's
going to be expectacular talent, really coming on as a

(08:55):
freshman and playing the way she did last night, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Danny, thank you, and we will be back on a
regular schedule next week. We'll have you on Wednesday as
we prepare for Texas and Ohio State. Thanks buddy.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
I also have to figured up Actually you'll be fine.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Hey, when we come back, we'll talk a little bit
more about that Texas big win on the road as
the Ladies went up to Norman and handled business right
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen
