using that talkback feature, We'll hear it instantly and you
might even hear it on air. You know, Mark, today
is a sad day for all of us because of
the simple fact that we are going to recognize today
one Kenneth Sims. Kenneth Sims passed away earlier this or yeah,
(02:40):
earlier this month, and we are going to recognize him
today with his celebration of life this morning. Well, he
is going to be joined by one of his closest friends,
the man that taught him everything he needed to know
on the Forty Acres as the news.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Came out yesterday that.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Steve Mango McMichael lost his battle with als. This is
a man that we all know as a Texas Longhorn
of Chicago bear, but he was also a wrestler, he
was an actor. He had done so much and led
a lot of folks in so many different ways. So
(03:23):
it's a sad, sad day on the forty Acres again.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Yeah, it's a sad day. Man.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I wouldn't consider it a loss. He succumbed to something
that he fought for a long time. And you know,
for somebody like Steve, it was tough as he was,
you know, it was very humbling him for him to
have to have people take care of him and stuff
like that.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
He was a very proudful guy.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Yeah, he played in the NFL for more than for
fifteen years. He was just inducted into the college I
mean the college. He's been in the College Football Hall
of Fame, he was in there since two thousand nine,
but he was just inducted in the Pro Football Hall
of Fame just this past year, the class of twenty
twenty four.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
There was a huge ceremony.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
There's a lot of guys that I hang out with
that are really really close to Steve McMichael. That was
a part of everything that he had done. He was
a four year letterman at the University of Texas. He
was a member of the nineteen seventy seven Southwest Conference
championship team. He was just one of those guys that
(04:32):
you continue to look at and you looked at his career,
you looked at what he was able to accomplish, and
he was a special special person. Walter Payton, his son
Jerry Peyton, was pretty much taking care of Steve McMichael
as far as he was the one that presented him.
(04:53):
He was the one that had I guess when he
was born, he was. Steve McMichael was there. Him and
his father were really really close people and they were
part of the forty six defense when they won the
Super Bowl. It was one of the biggest accomplishments because
of that forty six defense.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
He was an absolute monster.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
And I want you to hear Steve McMichael talking about
just life.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
You know what's best in the human condition, my son, Compassion,
not warrior, not competitor, not alpha, the compassion and the
human being and that you know what's going on in
(05:43):
the world today. You kind of lose faith on that,
don't you. But everybody that comes into my presence now
that I'm in this condition, that's the first thing I
see on their face, man, and it reinvigorates your belief
in humanity without shoot my friend.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
That was on Jared Peyton's page yesterday talking about him.
You start looking at his time at the University of Texas,
what he meant to this university. And I know we
just mentioned Kenny Simms and what Kenny Simms meant to
so many people around us. Kenny learned about being a
(06:30):
top notch player from Steve McMichael. He used to always
talk about the stories of Steve McMichael talking to him,
calling him pup and making sure that he understood how
to carry himself, understanding keys and learning how to play.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
On that defensive line.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
And now those two are having those conversations above us
right now.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
And I just had a conversation with Rick Flair last
week at Repsemania about Steve, and we're gonna have to
get Rick on next week and see if he can
tell some of these stories. But he was, I mean,
just how tough and how strong, and you know, you
(07:15):
when you have guys like Steve that come along, he
said alpha, Yeah, because he was an alpha guy. And
that's basically what Rick Flair was talking about, how good
a human he was and how given he was to
be as tough and as strong as he was. Well,
somebody like yourself who's been in professional wrestling that truly
(07:37):
understand the business of it all think about that.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
I mean, you have to be a bad man if
you're gonna be part of the Four Horsemen. Like the
Four Horsemen are the elite of the elite when you.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Start to think about bad dudes.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
And for Steve McMichael Mango to be a part part
of that and to be able to walk into a
sport and really get it down, that's huge, man.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah. And Terry Taylor, the guy.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
That trained Steve, we worked together with it in a
lot of camps at the Performance Center for WWE, and
it's like, I had so many people around you from Texas, right, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Are you from Austin?
Speaker 5 (08:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Yeah, you know Stephen Wake I was like yeah, He's like,
oh my god, do you know this? And they just
I just always had all these stories. And when I
would see Steve and I would ask him about it,
he just shake his head. Lad, he said, Mark, I
had a good life, right, I had a good life.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
And I always remember that.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
And in moments like this, you think about these guys
had great lives. They did, they did, and they were
they were recognizable, they were larger than life. But both
of them, Kenny Simms and Steve mcma michael, you didn't
want to get on their bad side, that's for sure.
(09:03):
And I remember just being that fly on the wall
at some of these golf tournaments that I used to
play in with Big Slimmy and Steve McMichael would be
there and just listening to these guys' story because you know,
as well as I do, everybody has a story.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
How did you become who you are? How did you
work to get to this point? But then the camaraderie
and you know as well as I do. Sometimes that
competition starts to bail up a little bit, and you
want to compete against each other, even if it is
just playing golf, even if it is this putt that
(09:44):
we're all about to take.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Now, let's see who really has that mindset.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
And how mad are they going to be when they
don't win in that set?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
You're next hole.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Let's see you don't win the next hole exactly. So
we lost a great, great longhorn. I know a lot
of folks are feeling that right now. But you know
as well as I do. Als is an awful, awful
disease is It is called the lou Garricks disease. And
he had been battling that for quite some time. He
(10:20):
was sixty seven years old, a former Texas All American
who I said, you know, played fifteen years with the
Chicago Bears, finished his career with Green Bay. And I'm
just glad that he was alive to be able to
be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There
(10:43):
was a lot of guys that were trying to get
him in there. They wanted him in that Hall of Fame.
It finally happened, and he will be forever immortalized. Shout
out to my guy Sam, Sam McMichael, his cousin who's
a good friend to mind. I know that they have
been dealing with this for quite some time as well,
(11:04):
So shout out to Steve McMichael. You and I will
be busy today, a real busy, busy day for you
and I because we're gonna go see Kenny's celebration of
life and then we will have the draft tonight. So
we're just getting started here on the morning kickoff. It
is Draft day, but it's also a day closer to
(11:26):
the final preparation for the spring fan day. Not a
spring game, folks, Not a spring game, folks. But we'll
hear from coach Sark one more time before we lead
into that, and we'll have Eric Henry of Horns twenty
four to seven joining us at seven thirty four. We're
just getting started here on the morning kickoff right here
(11:48):
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Welcome back to.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
The morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Shout out to the Texas.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Softball team as they went up to Oklahoma State yesterday
and got another road victory, one to nothing. Big big
time road victory against another ranked opponent.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Coming up.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
In the next segment, we will have Eric Henry of
Horns twenty four to seven talking all things Texas, and
following him, we will have coach Jim Slosnagel at seven
forty seven. Normally we would have him at eight o'clock,
but because he's got some other things that are going on, big,
big weekend for the Texas Longhorns baseball team as they
(12:35):
get ready to host Texas A and M, he will
be joining us at seven forty seven.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
So just your time, all right, let's get right into it.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Coach Sark met with the media the media just the
other day as they prepare for a spring fan there
you go coming up this Saturday. We will be out there,
come and say hello. We'll give you all the information. Also,
we will be at Twin Peaks Round Rock this afternoon
for a draft party preview. Basically, we'll be breaking down
(13:10):
all the things that we're hearing.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
We'll have special guests.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
We'll be able to talk all things Texas Longhorns as
we expect a bunch of Longhorns to hear their name
called by the weekend, and we set the over under
at thirteen thirteen longhorns. How many do you believe will
have their names called this weekend? Get over to AM
(13:34):
thirteen hundred to zone on Twitter X whatever you want
to call it, and cast your vote.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
I cast my vote.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
I say we will hear over thirteen longhorns names get called. Now,
this is this is in the entire draft. Yes, over
through the weekend, I will say, I would say fifteen,
So you're taking over. Yeah, I'm taking over, okay, because
I think Baron Surreal and Vernon Browton are gonna get.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
Well.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
They had fourteen guys go to the the Combine. Last
year they had eleven guys drafted. So I believe that
all the guys that were able to go to the
Combine will have that opportunity of being drafted. So I'm
a role with that. Over thirteen over thirteen guys will
(14:25):
be over in the draft. So I look forward to it.
We'll continue to have those conversations and we'll find a
little bit more. But make sure you're tuning in from
two to six point fifty today as we break down
the draft. All right, let's get into this conversation. Coach
Sark was asked about Jonah Williams. Jonah Williams, the superstar
(14:46):
that is on the forty Acres for football, but he's
also there for baseball. And he was talking about the
Jonah effect and what he's thought so far of Jonah Williams.
Speaker 6 (14:57):
I hope the guys out there look like Juan Soto
right now, but pump for him.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
You know.
Speaker 6 (15:05):
You know, everybody's path and journey to college is different.
And when you think about Jonahs, this guy should be
a senior in high school right now. You know he
should be he should be playing at ball, uh and
hitting off.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Of those pitchers.
Speaker 6 (15:17):
And you know he's he's playing in some big time
series right now, and he's getting a great opportunity.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Uh, he's maximizing it.
Speaker 6 (15:24):
And I got a chance to run into him yesterday
at the tank and it was just good to see him.
But uh, you know, they got a big series coming
up this weekend. I know, and and I know he's looking.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
For I know that I heard yesterday because if you
missed the interview between Coach Sark and Craig Way on
The Craig Way Show yesterday, you missed a great one.
Because Coach Sark is gonna throw out the first pitch
tomorrow night at the Dish as the Texas A and
M Fighting Naggies will be coming into town, so that
(15:55):
will be fun to see Coach Sark. Sark was a
originally college based player when he went to Juco first
so and then he decided that he wanted to play quarterback,
so he made the adjustment. But it's been really good
to see how Jonah has been affected and the team
has been affected by Jonah Williams. But Jonah is still
(16:16):
a guy that they're looking forward to having on the
football field.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
How do you think he's going to deliver it? You
think he's going to give him the high hard heat.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
He said he wants to make no. He said, he
wants to make the glove pop. Really yeah, he said
that's that's his goal. He said, my job is to
pop the gloves, So I want to make the mint pop.
You know he's practiced. Well, if you can sling it,
you can sling it. And I'm sure that Coach Sark
has not forgot how to throw a baseball, so I
(16:45):
think he's gonna be able to throw that heat in there.
Uh So it'll be it'll be fun to see and
and and again. It's a big, big weekend on the
forty acres. Not only are we having fan day for
the football team, but it is Texas A and M
coming into down to take on the number one.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Rink, Long one. So we'll see what is going on.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
But one of the things that he was talking about
is you start to look at this team and all
of the new faces, all of the new players, all
of the new coaches that are on campus, and now
they're trying to figure out our progress. And he said,
how do you drive home progress to make these guys
(17:26):
understand what's going on.
Speaker 6 (17:28):
Yeah, I think there's such a fine line. Now, you know,
these guys, this is this year round. You know, it's
twelve months a year, especially the way we play into
January every year, and they get done playing in the
college football playoffs, they're right back in school and they're
right back in the winter conditioning program. And so I
(17:48):
do think May is an important month for them to
kind of take a little bit of a deep breath,
but also maintaining their body, maintaining their connection to the playbook,
maintaining working at their craft, but also finding some balance
in life. I think is important because they're going to
come back in June and July and they're gonna work
(18:10):
really hard and then here comes August and next thing
you know, we're kicking the ball off August thirty, I
think Columbus. So I do talk to that and we'll
talk obviously more to it at the end of this
week and into next week before May comes. But there's
a lot of work to be done before that too.
We got to finish spring ball. We got to finish
this semester in the classroom really well. But I think
(18:31):
it's important that they get around their families a little bit.
Some guys need to rehab their bodies to make sure
they're as healthy as they can be for June. But
we ask a lot of them, you know, and that's
the calendar that we have in college football right now,
and so we do need to maximize those breaks when
we get them within parameters.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
Right.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
We talked about guardrails last week on another issue, but
having some guardrails up of making sure they're doing you know,
about three workouts a week, maintaining their body so that
when we come back, you know, it's not you know,
back to square.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Yeah, they got to make sure that they stay locked
in on what progress they have made because you know
as well as I do. You think that you've done
some things and then you take a little bit off,
and then the next thing you know, you're dealing with
soft tissue injuries because you haven't taken care of your
body the way that it should him saying three three
(19:25):
times a week, that's outstanding. You should be fine with
that type of workout if you're going in there to
make sure that that's your type of workout. But you
know as well as I do, Tory Beckton, once those
guys get back on campus, they're about to be locked
in and getting ready for a long football season. Over
the last few seasons, Texas has played deep into the
(19:49):
offseason for most teams.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
Yeah, and cooking beck then, I'm sure he's informing those guys.
It only takes the body forty eight hours the deconditioned,
so like, don't go more in two days without having
a stress for workout, right, And that's why that's why
it is so important with you having a great, great
(20:12):
strength and conditioning coach because they're the ones that spend
the most time with these players as opposed to some
of these other coaches. One of the other things that
coach Sark mentioned to the media on Monday or excuse me,
Tuesday was more about the fact of.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
What is this Spring Fling going to look like? What
is this Spring fan Day going to look like? As
we get ready for it'll be.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
A practice with with kind of scrimmage portions, a lot
of game like scenarios, which is what we've been doing
at the end of the last couple of weeks. You know,
we've been doing a lot of move the field. We've
been doing a lot of red area work. We're trying
to create situations but not having them scripted to where
they have to play the game, and we're putting him
(21:02):
in as many game like situations as we can to
see the response. You know, Like we had a couple
of situations last Thursday night, a really critical third down
and a critical fourth down where a younger receiver and
a running back made a catch and I don't think
really understood where the first down marker was. And those
are things that we're trying to teach the game right now.
(21:23):
It's not just about running plays, it's how the game
works within the framework or how those plays work within
the framework of the situation of the game, so that
we'll do a lot of that work Saturday. You know,
we've got a lot of different things happening this weekend,
obviously with the draft coming up this weekend, which we're
pumped for our guys. We've got Fan Day Saturday, which
(21:44):
is going to be a great day for the fans
and our players to interact in DKR. After that, we've
got players that have got prom coming up this week.
I got twenty two guys that should still be in
high school that have problem this weekend, So we've got
some moving parts. We just want to make sure that
we capitalize on those two hours that we get together.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Yeah, twenty two, that's a lot of kids going home
for prime. But you know, one of the things that
was just said, down in distance is really important and
you have to be taught that it's not just an
inherited thing.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
Yeah, you gotta be more open and seeing what is
going on to make that happen.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
So we shall see.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
We'll continue the conversations. But coming up next, we've got
our guy Eric Henry of Horris seven joining us to
talk all things Texas Longhorns right here on the morning
kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone Welcome
back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's Thursday, it's seven thirty four,
(22:45):
so that can only mean one thing. We are joined
by our guy, Eric Henry of Horns twenty four or seven.
You can follow them at Eric c Henry Underscore on
social media, and let's get right into it. E. Obviously,
we know that the draft is tonight, but everybody wants
to know what's going on on the forty acres today
(23:06):
and what better way to find out than talking to
you as the Texas Longhorns go into the spring fan
fest fan day type of show right now to see
where this team stands. They've got some moves in the
transfer portal, but now it is trying to let the
folks know what's going on on the forty.
Speaker 7 (23:29):
Yeah, as always, good morning, appreciate you all having me on.
Speaker 8 (23:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (23:32):
I think you talked about kind of going into this
week and now entering the latter stages of the week.
When we spoke with Steve Sarkisian earlier this week and
late last week, he talked about want to ramp things
up right, and that sounds about right when you consider
the rationale and the logic that Steve gave in terms
of not wanting to do a spring game this year
(23:53):
because of how much football Texas played over the last
two years, playing deep into the season, deep into January
last so you kind of get the feeling that the
first two to two and a half weeks of camp
were more kind of installation type things, more of what
he said, that NFL style OTA. But they clearly are
ramping things up, and with that ramp up, we've seen
a lot of player movement. Right They've started to see
(24:14):
some guys who, maybe for one reason another weren't cutting it.
Burt Auburn is an example of that. He often enters
a transfer portal, they decide what positions, They say, hey,
you know, we may think we have this, but they
kind of feel where they want to ramp up. They
bring in Jack injury that tight ends who you know.
Not to get ahead of ourselves, but I think he
has the potential to be one of the most significant
(24:35):
editions of the off season, regardless school in the nation.
And last and not least, they beef up that defensive
tackle room. They assessed what they had in the freshmen
and realize, hey, we want to continue to have veterans
that these freshmen can emulate and kind of patter in
their game after but not only get veterans hard. This
is where I think Texas made out tremendously. They picked
(24:56):
up three defensive tackles who have additional years of eligibility.
Not only are they beating up the defensive tackle room
for this year to make a run to the Comafootball playoffs,
but they're getting guys who are going to be around
if they can hand on to them for multiple years,
so they won't have to portal four and five guys
next season.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
And they also gives the guys a chance to catch up.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
So all these freshmen that is so highly regarded, you know,
they'll get some playing time, but they also get to
watch some of these guys that have had college experience
in front of them.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Correct.
Speaker 7 (25:29):
Yeah, you know, Mark, it's really interesting that you note that,
because when we spoke with Steve earlier this week, he
said something and the light bulb kind of clicked.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
In my head.
Speaker 7 (25:37):
Right, you know, he's kind of hitting at this over
the last two years. The example he likes to use
is J. T. Sanders, of course, the former tight end
now to Carolina Panthers who came in as a five
star recruit but didn't initially play right, you know, initially
with a guy on special teams. And he's always gives
the example of liking to have a veteran guy in
the room that the young players can put themselves after.
And I just kind of light bulb kind of clicked
(25:58):
in my head because he said it in relation to
the defensive tackles and the wide receivers, right, two positions
that I know. I've come on the show and been
super excited about the talent, the five star talent, four
star talent that they've recruited. But Steve and I don't
think it's a reluctance to play freshmen as much as
it is he feels if their developmental process is right,
and we've seen this play out the last few years, right,
(26:20):
look at the receiver room, look at arch Manning, etc.
If their developmental process is right, why not give these guys,
as you noted, and a year, maybe a year and
a half or so to kind of get their feet
wet to where when they take the field, it's not
all right. They're not learning on the job. It's not
on the job training. We're ready to go produce.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
How do you get those guys to buy into the
fact that you're not playing right now, you're not starting
right now, but we're preparing you for next year.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
It's hard to sit back.
Speaker 7 (26:53):
Mark, it's the most fascinating thing. Actually wrote about this
earlier this week in my four down column. I think
it's one of the more fascinating, the one the more
things that's Steve star king that to be able to do.
Because y'all see today's collegeotball climate, right player, the portal
was there, and not only just the portal, I mean
teams are offering you know, big time nil dollars to say, hey,
you know, maybe you're not playing or you're not making
as much at your current stop. We can take care
(27:16):
of that here. How do they I The best answer
I can give you, and this is with you know,
kind of talking with Steve. What he kind of emphasizes
is just look at the developmental process that we've done
over the past few years. Right, look at Gunner, you
can look at Gunner Helm, you can look at DeAndre Moore,
you can look at you know, a narrative guy. So
they say, all right, these guys bought in and JT.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Sanders.
Speaker 7 (27:37):
As I mentioned, these guys bought in, trusted the process,
and you'll see that you get yourself to, you know,
where you need to be as a red shirt freshman,
a red shirt sophomore, and in two years you'll be,
you know, with these guys coming up here on Thursday
and Friday night walking across that stage in the NFL Draft.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
That was the answer that I was waiting for. And
that's what coach Sark had already mentioned.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
I mean, if you you're going to college to develop,
this is where you have seen it.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Now that's the difference.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Eleven guys go to the combine and then now you
send fourteen. The development is there, but now you got
to make sure that you lock it in. So let
me ask you this. Speaking of development, Jonah Williams continues
to be the talk of it all. You and I
have talked a lot about it during the baseball games.
(28:26):
But where is he going to fit when it comes
time for football? Just being away from it, they talk
about twenty two freshmen that are on campus right now,
but now it's a little bit different. Where's Jonah going
to fit in once it all settles.
Speaker 7 (28:41):
In man Hart, Jonah is another great example kind of
piggybacking off that developmental deal, because it's not that Jonah
Williams couldn't step in and play if needed as a
true freshman. Right However, that's safety room. I mean depending
on where Derek Williams. Derek Williams could possibly of course
mocal ass here with the injury, could shift from his
(29:01):
safety position and play stars. That would free up one role.
But you've got plenty of safeties. You've got Michael Tafts,
You've got Jordan Johnson Rubel, you got Johnny MacDonald with others. Right,
So in my opinion, where does he kind of fit in?
He kind of fits in. I think if you remember
where Derek Williams was in twenty twenty three, right, you
know there was a loaded safety room. Jaron Thompson, Jalen Catalan,
(29:21):
Michael Taft, Keeton Crawford, et cetera. You know a bunch
of guys in the safety room. And Derek Williams kind
of slowly, i'd say about week three, week four, week
five starts seeing a little more playing time. I think
that's where Jonah Williams fits in, right, is Hey, here's
a guy who all right, you off of the collarbone injury.
You're coming off of baseball season, you haven't necessarily had
the opportunity to do as much with football right now,
(29:43):
in the spring he started, We'll ramp it up in
the fall, and then by week three, week four, by
the time SEC play starts, they're now adding another weapon
to your second garret. So that's where I think he
kind of fits in. Is that if you go back
and look at where Derek Williams was as a true
freshman and how he's playing time kind of steadily increased.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
As the season went on.
Speaker 7 (30:03):
I think that's the way you guys can attest to
this right when he saw former two sport athletes in
the past. You know, if guys can't play the entire season,
you know they can certainly make an impact in nine,
ten eleven games, but maybe not necessarily at the start
of the season. You know, be that that guy in
the starting lineup. But Jordan Willns, Wh's gonna have a
little no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Hey, you couldn't have said it any better, and we'll
leave it at that. There he is Eric Henry of
Horns twenty four to seven, dropping knowledge as always coming
up next, Hey, we got coach Slasnagel. He's moving up
his time today because he's got some other stuff going on,
so he's coming up next, so we'll ask him about
John of Williams as well. Thanks he we'll talk to
(30:46):
you soon. Coming up next, Coach Jim Slasnagel up the
number one rank Texas Longhorns as they have a huge
weekend starting tomorrow right here on the morning kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. He is the
number one coach of the number one team in the land.
He is the head coach of Texas baseball, as they
(31:08):
finished off a week that is pretty impressive after they
swept the Auburn Tigers, who were number eight at the time,
and then went down to Sam Marcus and won an
epic battle for teen to eleven. But everybody wants to
talk about what's happening this weekend. He is Coach Jim
Slasnagel and coach let's go back to the Auburn series.
(31:32):
You guys have found a way to make it happen.
Kimball Schustler had one of the best weeks, which he
was rewarded for for being SEC co Player of the Week.
Your pitching staff rallied after Jared Spencer was relieved early.
What is it about this team that just always seemed
(31:53):
to find.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
A way.
Speaker 9 (31:56):
Well, thanks, first of all, thanks for having me on.
I mean we can pitch, you know, even though we
were banged up a little bit.
Speaker 10 (32:04):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (32:05):
I think anytime you throw enough strikes and and keep
the team keep the score down, then you have a
chance to win, uh with uh, you know, with maybe
wonder one or two swings.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
But it's just the competitive spirit.
Speaker 9 (32:16):
Of a team and the grit of this team and
the tech you know, Texas fight in this team is
it's it sounds coachy, but it's if you've seen us play,
sometimes it's not pretty, but they find a way to
uh to win more than they lose at this point.
And they're fun to be around, and especially that older group,
(32:37):
uh Galvan and Schuschler and Max Blou and Jalen and
Gath Barno and uh, you know some of those guys
on the mound. Casey Borb is really kind of coming
into his own a little bit. So it's it's fun
to be around, and they play for each other and
what we call it we kind of try to out
team the other team, you know, and that that includes
(32:57):
the guys on the bench. So it's not all he's pretty,
but the results at this point will take it. But
we have a whole new opening day tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Coach, we had you on early in the season and
you told us that temper your expectations, and I try.
I'm trying my best, but I'm feeling like Reclair, it's
hard for me to keep these alligators down.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
I'm bringing out the pump poms and everything.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
I'm hey, I'm all ut right now, Like, how do
you get your team to not just look at the.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Press that you know they're there, how well they're doing it?
Speaker 9 (33:37):
Yeah, you know, I mean I think in today's world
that's really hard to do. I just think these guys
feel like they they prepare like champions, they expect to win,
but they truly do respect the game and they you know,
and they we don't fear any opponent, but.
Speaker 5 (33:56):
We respect every opponent.
Speaker 9 (33:58):
But it's more more about, you know, again, playing to
a standard and not a scoreboard. And you know, we
had multiple conversations this week about the things that we
have to be better at. And when you get into
you know, that's why you know weekends like this weekend
or any sec weekend, certainly when you're playing a rival
(34:19):
and there's so much, you know, attention brought to it.
It's a personal challenge and a team challenge to keep
your head, keep your head in the sand, and keep
your blinders on and focus on self improvement. And I
think today's young person gets caught up in the comparison
(34:42):
game and I'm better than you or that person's better
than me, when all we can do is try to
be the best version of ourself every day. And we
know that a we can get healthy. So if we
can get healthy before you know, the end of the season,
then maybe we can even play better. But it's just, uh,
(35:03):
it's just a matter of being the best version of
our of our own team. And when you look at
it that way, when you compare yourself to yourself and
not anything else, then you keep your head out of
the clouds. And uh, don't even.
Speaker 5 (35:17):
Read that stuff.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
We're talking to the head coach of the Texas Longhorns,
Jim Slasnagel coach. I want to get right into it.
This is a big weekend obviously, but there's some adjustments
that may or may not be made, so I'm gonna
give you an opportunity to talk about it. Jared Spencer
is someone that has been your Friday go to guy.
(35:38):
He came out on Thursday of last week. What is
the latest, uh with Jared Spencer.
Speaker 9 (35:45):
Yeah, Jared's Jared's gonna visit with some medical people today,
him and his family and.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Uh try and figure out.
Speaker 9 (35:53):
What the best long term decision is for him. And so,
you know, we should know more by the end of
the end of the day. He's certainly not going to
pitch this weekend or pitch, you know, anytime soon. I
wouldn't think, I mean, let's let's we get some and
unless we get some awesome news or some creative you
know ideas from wherever he goes today. But we knew
(36:16):
that after Thursday night, well we knew he you know,
he was gonna at least have to skip one start,
So we tried to prepare for it over the course
of last weekend. We wanted Ruger to throw a little
bit on Saturday, but then get him out as soon
as we could. We like his mentality and who he
is as a as a person, as a and as
(36:36):
a pitcher to handle Friday night Luke Harrison will pitch
on Saturday, and more than likely to be Jason Flores
on Sunday, But you know, we'll just TVA to see how.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
It goes, all right, And then the other question is
Jonah Williams. Jonah Williams has captured the hearts and minds
of so many Longhorn fans. I thought he shot a
ball out of right field the other day for his
first home run.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
I think he ought that too.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
But now he is in the conversation of being your
left fielder. What's the latest on Jonah Williams and the
expectations of this young man.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
Yeah, you know, there's no expectation.
Speaker 9 (37:14):
I mean, he's he's going to be in the lineup
if he's healthy and ready to go, and you know,
the expectation is just for him to keep competing. I
think if you watch him, he's into every pitch, not
just in his own at bats, but I mean he's
he's into every single pitch in our dugout. He's very
much an encourager. He'll challenge a team even at seventeen
(37:36):
years old. So you know, he tried to avoid that
tag on Tuesday night, and I think he's fine. You know,
he tweaked, he tweaked something in his leg.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
We took him out.
Speaker 9 (37:51):
Real quick just to you know, make sure, you know,
give us the best chance for him to be back
out there this weekend.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
But you know, we'll see how it feels today in.
Speaker 9 (38:00):
But he's a tough, competitive athlete man, and he's different,
I frankly than thirty five years. I've never coached anybody
like this guy in terms of in terms of the
all around athleticism plus competitive spirit plus competitive intelligence. He's
very smart on an athletic field. I mean, he's very
(38:22):
smart everywhere, and a great teammate and just a joy
to be around in every sense.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Coach, I'm gonna let you go with this.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
Obviously, this is a huge weekend for so many other reasons. Obviously,
a lot of folks are talking about this weekend. How
are you, as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns
trying to just take it all in. I know you've
been around the game for a long time. It's another
game to you day one, as you said, opening Day.
(38:52):
But obviously there's gonna be some type of feeling going
into this weekend.
Speaker 9 (38:58):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, I wouldn't I'd be lying
if I didn't tell you that. You know, this is
a different one, you know, on a on a somewhat
similar scale. My first year at A and M, we
played TCU in a regional final and that was tough,
but not like a three game series in the SEC.
Speaker 5 (39:18):
So it's gonna be good to see, you know, the kids.
Speaker 9 (39:21):
That we were part of coaching last year, and we
have great relationships with those guys. We'll get a chance
to win their career is over, to spend time together.
But you know, right now, my job is to coach
to the Texas Longhorns, and I win this weekend only
counts as one win. A loss only counts as one loss,
and they're not. We can't make it anything more than that.
(39:42):
It's great for the fans. It's an unbelievable rivalry that'll
be around. It's been around long before any of us,
It'll be around way after any of us are even here.
So it's an honor to be a part of it.
On no matter what side you're on.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
No doubt, well, good luck and we'll be out there
and I know it's going to be a fun, fun
weekend and the venom will be freeing out there, man,
so enjoy yourself and have a good one.
Speaker 5 (40:10):
All right, take care, have a good day.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Coach, no problem. There.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
He is coach Jim Slasnagle previewing this weekend and there
were some big news that was there. Make sure you
get over to the podcast page if you missed any
of it. Coming up next our number two of the
morning Kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to our number two of the
morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
(40:36):
The Zone and our number one. We talked about the
passing of Steve Mango McMichael. He passed away from als
the Louke Garrick's disease.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Last night we.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
Also got a chance to listen to coach Sart talk
all things Texas Longhorns and Eric Henry of Horns twenty
four to seven. I know normally you would be tuning
in right.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Now to hear from coach.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Coach Slasnagel was on in the last segment because he
had some other stuff that he needed to get done.
So if you missed any part of that, get over
to our podcast page, because he did let us know
that Jared Spencer will not be the Game one starter
against Texas A and M. It will be Ruger Riojas
(41:22):
that will get the ball on Friday. Also, here's a
chance for you to win a pair of tickets to
go see Jason Aldan. That's right, Jason Aldean. August the
sixteenth will be at the Moody Center. All you have
to do is get over to AM thirteen hundred to
zone on the iHeartRadio app and leave the word Jason
(41:45):
by using that red microphone. Jason is the word of
the day. I want to get into the NBA because
the NBA, as folks love to say, is fantastic and
the NBA has been a lot of fun. Are Boston
and Cleveland on a collision course to play each other
(42:08):
because both of those guys have found a Both of
those team excuse me, have found a way to get
it done. Cleveland defeats the Miami Heat yesterday one twenty
one to one twelve with twenty three three pointers. They
can just put it up and make it go in.
And then the Boston Celtics without without one Jason Tatum
(42:36):
find a way to get it done as well, because
of one Jalen Brown get out in transition. Before Boston's
defense can get set, Brown has matched up with the big.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Harder out of the perimeteral. Brown lets you Clyde I.
Speaker 6 (42:52):
Three port fit into the hands of Crowns.
Speaker 11 (42:57):
He takes it around fire and scoring and with the
shooting and the spacing on the floor, up the floor
Holidays early offense for Brown, pushed.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
Up and a deuce and that's something that Jaylor Brown's
done more of this season.
Speaker 11 (43:12):
Getting into the posts, whitecross the double team.
Speaker 12 (43:16):
Horford looking to pass out of the post.
Speaker 11 (43:17):
Brown fly by Bant Carrol and Brown makes him hey
as he snaps in a triple.
Speaker 5 (43:22):
And that's not easy.
Speaker 13 (43:23):
Jalen Brown look great close out here by Polo Chick.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
Jalen Brown able to knock it down.
Speaker 8 (43:29):
And we talked about in that first half.
Speaker 12 (43:31):
See if the Celtics can replicate their third quarter performance
from Game one.
Speaker 11 (43:35):
Brown high can jump or gos hits.
Speaker 3 (43:38):
A three and Jalen Brown finished with thirty six points
as the Boston Celtics beat the Orlando Magic one oh
nine to one hundred.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
Man.
Speaker 1 (43:48):
You have to really give a lot of praise to
the roster building of the Boston team.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
You know, you look at what White and Pridger add
to that team six Man of the Year.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
Pritchard knocked down three point shooters facilitators, and White is
one of the top ten defensive guards in the NBA
and on a team with already two of the other
top defenders in the NBA. So they did a really
good job of restocking the cupboard. They have done a
(44:26):
great job of just being Boston, you know what I'm saying.
They find a way to get into the mix because
you look at who they are and the coaching staff
and the ability to understand each other's roles. Jalen Brown
can sit back and let Jason Tatum go just go
ahead and do your thing. But when he gets his opportunity,
(44:50):
he makes the most of it. And let's not forget
about Porzingis, who got his head with the crimson mask
yesterday because he got elbow. But he's also he's somebody
that a lot of folks have forgot about. Not only
have they forgotten about him because he has so many
injuries over the last three years, right, you know, when
(45:12):
he even New York, he played like fifteen to twenty games, yep,
you know, so it's hard to to to quantify his
worth because of the lack of play. But when he
does play, he's such a unicorn, which his gimmick.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
A wrestling term.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Uh, he's, for lack of a better term, a hard defense.
Speaker 2 (45:39):
He's really hard to defend.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
But you the ownership, they must they must have called
you and asked you, hey, hard what should we do
because you always talk about locking a team up over
a long period of time and letting him play together.
And the price is only going to go up, is
what you always say.
Speaker 2 (45:59):
For sure.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
The owner of the Celtics, he locked people up in
three and four and five year deals like for what
called good business? For what the price is now right?
Speaker 2 (46:11):
And you know, like I just look at it, like, man,
why don't more teams do this? Because some teams don't.
Speaker 3 (46:21):
They always are reactionary instead of forward thinking. When you
talk about wanting to win. That's how you build your
team to want to win. It's not we need to
go grab this, we need to go grab that. How
do you build your team and if you got the talent,
lock it up. I mean it's that simple. Those guys
are talented enough, and a lot of people don't want.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
To leave and go to other places.
Speaker 3 (46:45):
Everybody's not built like that, and if you're winning, it
doesn't really matter who's getting a glory because those checks
cast the same, especially when you're looked at as a champion.
And speaking of champions, I don't believe that the the
Golden State Warriors are gonna be able to finish this off.
(47:07):
If Jimmy Butler his pelvic contusion is going to be
a factor.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
Trick shot artist, but Jim's key back on the floor.
Speaker 8 (47:19):
Let's keep an eye on him.
Speaker 12 (47:20):
That would pull the Butler goes down hard. Thompson comes
underneath Butler. He was bumped as well, and Jimmy Butler's
legs went right out from under him, straight contact.
Speaker 2 (47:33):
On the floor.
Speaker 3 (47:35):
And that is the rough part of what happened, because
Jimmy Butler obviously is a huge part of what the
trade was made for him because they thought this was
going to be their opportunity to go on a run
Jimmy Butler. We don't know exactly how long Jimmy Butler
is going to be out. They said he has a
(47:57):
pelvic contusion, and I looked it up this morning and
it said that essentially he could be out from one
week to maybe three or four weeks to be able
to get healthy again.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
Have you ever had a bruise tail bone? No? I
have not I have, And everything dealing with moving where your.
Speaker 8 (48:21):
Knees being.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
Are affected.
Speaker 1 (48:27):
It's just like once you take all the pressure off
one leg and put on just walking one step to
the other step is very, very painful. And you know
he got the MRI. They diagnosed him and then they
came up with the timeframe. But the playoffsers every day
(48:48):
pretty much, so you know, go to State without him
for a week could mean they could be bumped out
of this series exactly. They could be at it home
or to Galveston, as we like to say, because the
situation is just that, well they rich, they might go
to Padre.
Speaker 3 (49:09):
Well, they're definitely talented enough to be able to go
wherever they want to. But you know, as well as
I do, when you start to look at this situation,
who's involved, how it's gonna go down. In that Houston
Rocket basketball team with Emeadoka, they knew exactly what last
night was going to mean to them.
Speaker 2 (49:30):
They had to be physical.
Speaker 3 (49:32):
They knew that Draymond Green was gonna be up to
his old self and being chippy and wanting to tell
people because you know, when it's time for you to
kind of take a step back. Is when all the
time you talk about how many rings you got? His
conversation now is I know what it's about because I
(49:54):
have this many rings. I have this many rings. I'm like, listen, man,
understand that. Congratulations.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
You know what that is? Right? That's knowing that the
time is in.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
Not only is it knowing that the time is at
the end, but as he's doubting the fact that they're
gonna go forward, they can't and he's he's just compensating, Yeah,
they can't.
Speaker 3 (50:17):
And I'm just telling you right now, it just does
not look like things are gonna go the way that
he wants to. And as I said, it's time for
a change. And the change is now because joining us
in the Legends of the Locker Room, Charles Davis gives
us his final mock draft and we'll ask him where
some of these longhorns may and we'll talk about it
(50:41):
next right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Mark Henry and Mike Hart.
We love being in this Legends of the Locker Room
segment and it's a very very special day. It's draft day,
and what better way to get all the info and
talk to a legend himself. And he's always welcoming the
(51:04):
legends of the locker room segment. He is Charles Davis
of CBE As Charles, I want to get right into it,
my man.
Speaker 2 (51:13):
How many Longhorns do you have going in the first round?
Speaker 14 (51:16):
Oh boy, let's see gold Golden, the receiver, Banks, the
offensive tackle. Let's see who else do we have? Dy
Bear in the corner? I think that's what I think.
(51:37):
So that's what we have and then plenty more to
come as as as.
Speaker 2 (51:41):
The days move on.
Speaker 3 (51:42):
So as you go through your mock breakdown and you've
looked at all of these players, are you're looking at
obviously the fit for whichever team needs that type of player.
But what else goes into it when you start to
break it all day?
Speaker 14 (52:01):
Yeah, fit, you're right about that fits a big part
of it. Another huge part of it is just how
good are they?
Speaker 2 (52:06):
Right? If they're just really good.
Speaker 14 (52:08):
Sometimes you just bypass and fit and you have to
have that player on your team.
Speaker 5 (52:13):
You know.
Speaker 14 (52:13):
So the the old idea that well we got a
player pretty similar to him, you know, let's take someone else.
The most glaring example, of course, and we'll go down
in sports history until the world ends, is the Portland
Trailblazer was passing on Michael Jordan because they had Clyde
Drexler and taking Sam Bouie. Very unfair to Sam, who
(52:36):
ended up having a rough career because of leg injuries
and what have you. But it's just an example of
it doesn't matter how good that guy is. If there's
another guy who's really good, you need to add him
to your team. So sometimes you just do. That's where
we he you always heard that term best player available,
That's what that means. Hey, that's the best guy on
the board, as the most highly rated player, we have
(52:56):
put him on the team and let's figure it out
from there. So so that's a big part that goes
into it as well.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
Mister Davis.
Speaker 1 (53:02):
I always subscribe to the theory that sometimes you got
to give up a lot to get a lot. And
I would have Travis Hunter on my team if I
had to give away three draft picks.
Speaker 2 (53:17):
I gotta have him.
Speaker 3 (53:18):
He just he's too valuable, too complimentary area of peace
to not have on your team. What's your opinion on
his draft status and worth.
Speaker 14 (53:33):
Yeah, I think he's the best player in the draft.
I mean when you start rating them, quarterbacks have a
different category because they're so darn valuable. So cam Ward
may go number one. We expect to go number one
overall to Tennessee Titans. But I don't think there's any
draft room in the NFL any of thirty two teams
they would have cam Ward listed as the top player
(53:54):
in the draft. Doesn't mean he's a bad player, he's
an excellent player. Just means that Travis Hunter would be
You know, I think if we went into the draft
rooms across the board, Travis Hunter is going to be
number one on plenty of them. There may be some
Abdual Carter's number one from Penn State. Those are probably
the top two players in the running for it. Cam
(54:15):
wod would be the number one quarterback, but not the
number one overall rated player.
Speaker 2 (54:19):
Look Travis Hunter, there's nothing he can't do.
Speaker 14 (54:23):
And the interesting part about it is he played about
one hundred and fifteen plays per game playing offense and defense.
I'm pretty sure that in the beginning of his NFL
career he won't do anything close to that. But at
some point I do expect him to be a true
two way player in the NFL. I just think he's
got to add some maturity in terms of age body.
Speaker 2 (54:47):
You know what you would call grown man's strength.
Speaker 15 (54:51):
Mark right, it's yeah, it's not just it's not just
rolling out there and hitting the weight room and all that,
because at his age, weight will often melt off of a.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
Player like that.
Speaker 14 (55:02):
Okay, I suspect he played last year in the high
one hundred and seventy pounds.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
That's not gonna work in the NFL.
Speaker 14 (55:09):
When you gotta come up and hit Derrick Henry all
the time, that's gonna change things for you. I think
in a couple of years, when that weight settles on
you and you can carry it and you're not worried
about losing it through a season, you keep sprinkling in
more and more on both sides, and then I think
we'll get a chance to see that true two way player.
Speaker 2 (55:29):
I just don't expect to see it in the beginning.
Speaker 14 (55:30):
And I do think Cleveland's gonna take him at two
and their GM is already announced. He'll probably play offense
first for them, and they'll sprinkle in defense if something
happens and someone else gets him. They may want to
play defense first and sprinkling offense. But I think within
the season or two we may get our chance to say, hey, Travis.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Henry's just not leaving the field.
Speaker 14 (55:51):
That's gonna be Travis Hunter is just not leaving the field,
and that will be fun for the NFL.
Speaker 1 (55:57):
So my second thing is what is the most outlandish
thing that you think is gonna happen trade wise, movement
wise in his draft.
Speaker 2 (56:09):
I think that there's gonna be a major roar.
Speaker 14 (56:13):
When Ashton Genty comes off the board, maybe at five
to Jacksonville instead of six to the Raiders, because six
to the Raiders has kind of been talked about a
long time now, and Jacksonville has lately popped up with that.
The second thing is gonna be what happens with the
tight ends Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland. Most people, of course,
(56:35):
have seen Warren and the incredible things he has done.
I know there's some people that like Loveland better. Wouldn't
that be wild if Loveland went ahead of Warren? But last,
but not least, I think the quarterbacks after cam Ward
may be bypassed in the top ten picks.
Speaker 2 (56:52):
Shadora Sanders.
Speaker 14 (56:54):
Jackson Dart I think are the primary guys that no
one takes them at that point. And now we're starting
to go, Okay, what's gonna happen here is at Pittsburgh
at twenty one. We may get all the way down
and towards twenty maybe even into the twenties, and then
we may get a couple of trades where like the
Giants trade back into the first round, and if they do,
(57:16):
I think they're gonna take Jackson Dart instead of Shador Sanders.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
WHOA.
Speaker 14 (57:20):
And if Cleveland trades back into the first round, I
think that they would come back and get Shador Sanders.
So we shall see how that goes if somebody makes
the trade to come back in or are they waiting
to the top of the second round, which I'm not
sure they're able to do without someone trying to come
in and snatch one of these guys. But what if
we end the first night and let's say one quarterback
(57:43):
is taken and Shador Sanders.
Speaker 2 (57:44):
Is in one of them.
Speaker 14 (57:45):
That would be leaving there with an incredible story because
we all know about Shador, we.
Speaker 2 (57:51):
Know how good he is, we know who he is.
Speaker 14 (57:54):
He is probably the face of this draft, even though
cam Ward's gonna go number one at the top, no.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
Doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (58:02):
We're talking to Charles Davis of CBS, and Charles, you know,
those are some wild, wild scenarios and I wouldn't be
shocked if any of those continue to happen this weekend.
But my question for you is, why is it that
Kelvin Banks continues to be one of those guys that
(58:22):
people look at and think that he's going to fall.
Everybody that he's been up against, all the number one
first round picks that went before in the previous draft,
he's stuffed. But yet yeah, he's still being questioned. I
just don't understand it, and maybe I'm too close to it.
Speaker 14 (58:42):
No, No, I don't think you're too close to it.
And it's hard to understand when you look at it.
To me, it's like all us trying to evaluate pass rushers,
and you would think that in college would be fairly easy, right,
that guy's getting twelve fifteen sacks, you know, because a
great pass rusher in college often playing against guys who
are going to be tax accountants, not NFL players, so
(59:05):
they're going to dominate them and blow them away.
Speaker 2 (59:08):
Yet when you.
Speaker 14 (59:09):
Look up, A lot of these pass rushers don't have
big sack numbers in college. Danil Hunter is one of
the great pass rushers in NFL History's over one hundred sacks.
I think in his career. He had four and a
half in his entire career at LSU. I mean had
the account for that chop. Robinson coming out last year
first round picked in Miami at four and a half
sackses last year at Penn State a dafeo way when
(59:31):
he's known as Jason Oway at Penn State. His last
year a Penn State had zero sacks, still went in
the first round. You know, Travon Walker did not big
sack numbers at Georgia has been back to backsacks double
digit sacks in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (59:42):
I could go on and on.
Speaker 14 (59:43):
It's hard for us to understand that the league likes
trait guys who can do certain certain things with explosiveness,
could do things better than anyone else, and then they
work with everything else and sometimes.
Speaker 2 (59:54):
Those guys blossom.
Speaker 14 (59:56):
The funny part with Calvin Banks is there's been so
much conversation about Will Campbell at LSU in his arm
length and can he play guard?
Speaker 5 (01:00:02):
Can you do that.
Speaker 14 (01:00:04):
Well, guess who got sucked into that same conversation. M
Kelvin Banks did Rashaan Slater's arm length get question. He's
living just fine at left tackle with.
Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Los Angeles Chargers.
Speaker 14 (01:00:14):
Peter Skronsky was a left tackle at Northwestern, same conversation.
He immediately moved inside the guard with the Tennessee types, but.
Speaker 2 (01:00:20):
Still went number seven overall pick.
Speaker 14 (01:00:23):
I think that the outside world has getting caught up
in the conversation. I think the league is going to
send us send a message tonight, and they'll be surprised
if Kevin Banks goes in the top ten picks.
Speaker 3 (01:00:34):
All right, that right, there's music to our ears, my friend.
So we're all in consensus that cam Ward is the
number one overall pick, and then everything else is just
going to be a crapshoot.
Speaker 14 (01:00:50):
Yeah, I mean, I think, I think really, barring some
crazy unforeseen move, we got Chalk at the top probably
the top three picks. Ward it won to Tennessee, Travis Hunter,
two to Cleveland, and then three.
Speaker 2 (01:01:08):
The New York Giants have dual Carter.
Speaker 14 (01:01:11):
We know that Cleveland and the Giants are really quarterback needy,
but I think that they have plans the Giants hedge
their bets by signon Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson. Cleveland
has Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco, so they know they
can line up and play. Do they want there's either
team want to play with these quarterbacks? Probably not, but
(01:01:32):
they know they can get out and be competent, right,
so they have a plan to come and get their quarterbacks.
I think later I look my first mock draft, I
put Jackson Dart at three to the New York Johnson.
Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
People lost their mind, like this just went crazy.
Speaker 14 (01:01:48):
If Jackson Dart gets traded for in the first round
and the Giants are the team that comes back and
gets him, to remember who.
Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
Told you were over Jackson Dart now?
Speaker 14 (01:02:00):
Because I don't think it's going to happen at three,
all right, because I think three is probably too rich.
And if you live in the New York market, I
grew up in New York State, you gotta be a
little bit careful about just how crazy you want to.
Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
Get, because they'll get you. Know that market will come
for you.
Speaker 14 (01:02:16):
But if you can end up getting a dual carter
and then come back and get the quarterback later, instead
of people thinking you're nuts. Now you look like you
did a hell of a job. And that's what I
think the giants are plotting to do. Would not surprise
me at all. If they play games in the top.
What if they're sitting there at three, someone really wants
gent knows they have to get.
Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
In front of Jacksonville and now they want to play
some games. The giants are willing to do that.
Speaker 14 (01:02:43):
Drop back to maybe ten, twelve somewhere that neighborhood, and
then maybe make another deal and come back up. And
now let's say you get up dual carter at three,
drop back down, come back up, and get the quarterback
at like six, seven, eight. I don't know what the
difference between three and three and eight myself, but people
(01:03:03):
tend to go, oh, that's.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
A much better deal.
Speaker 14 (01:03:06):
I just you know, well, we'll see how it goes.
But they will try and manipulate the board. But the
bottom line is all this manipulating I'm talking about you
have to have a partner and can't listen Your idea
of doing it is one thing, but if you don't
have a partner that's going to join you, you.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Might as well be playing monopoly. Yeah, that's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (01:03:30):
Well, there's a lot that can happen, there's a lot
that should happen, and one thing that is that is
going to happen. You are getting the opportunity to be
the lead analyst after Gary Danielson retires after this year. Congratulation,
much desiragulation, and continue.
Speaker 14 (01:03:46):
To thank you for both of you. I really appreciate it.
I'm just trying to stage your footsteps and follow both
of you with the success you're having. You keep doing
your thing, and listen, you know it's true. Look, I'm
no Hall of Favor.
Speaker 2 (01:04:01):
Now, so I know that. I know I'm talking to one.
I'm talking to a legend. But here's the bottom line.
You guys, keep doing your thing. Appreciate you having me on.
It's an honor for me each and every time.
Speaker 14 (01:04:12):
And uh, this NFL Draft, you guys gotta you gotta
bring the show to the draft. Here it is wild.
You wouldn't believe who you're gonna meet. And I'll leave
you with this here. I am now sixty year old man.
I'm in the lobby yesterday, man walks up to me,
introduced himself, tells me the fan appreciates my work. The
(01:04:33):
whole deal and the whole time I can't talk because
I'm staring at him, going, oh my god, my college
days are staring me in the face.
Speaker 2 (01:04:41):
It was Christopher Kid read of kidd and play oh wow,
no wow.
Speaker 14 (01:04:47):
I almost fell over. I was like, and then and
then walk away. And here I am a sixty year
old man. I'm so be a grown man, right, and
I go, kid knows who I am. Anyway, we came
very we came very close to doing the kid play dance.
Speaker 2 (01:05:07):
I'm a little disappointed you didn't. Yeah, I'm like, what's
going on? I think. I think if I hadn't been
in such shock and all of a sudden turned.
Speaker 14 (01:05:14):
The stone, I couldn't even I couldn't move my feet,
my jaw, my face.
Speaker 9 (01:05:19):
I was strong.
Speaker 2 (01:05:20):
I was like, that's kid, that's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
Well, continue to success, my man, and uh, thank you,
and you are always welcoming the Legends of the Locker
Room segment.
Speaker 2 (01:05:30):
Best of love to you.
Speaker 14 (01:05:31):
I appreciate you guys, continue success, keep doing your things.
Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
Thanks a lot, all right, thank you, Yes, Charles Davis.
Speaker 3 (01:05:38):
Legend of the Locker Room coming up next, we'll have
an abbreviated you guessed it. You know what it is,
world's strongest take right here on the morning kick off
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
This is a.
Speaker 3 (01:05:53):
Great stuff by Charles Davis and CBS Sports as he
broke down the draft. But right now it's our god
Mark Henry bringing you the world's strongest take, taking away
big fella.
Speaker 2 (01:06:05):
Large, what's up? You know the time?
Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's strongest.
Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
Man, Marcus. Back then, they didn't know me. Now I'm hot.
They all on me. Last night, the Celtics.
Speaker 1 (01:06:25):
Went out there and faced the Orlando Magic Pablo Bencherod. Hey, guys,
I'm just letting it be known. I'm I'm a fan.
I'm a fan of the game. But he's gonna need
some help. He's gonna need some big help. But my
take is about the about the Celtics. They were without
(01:06:51):
their best player, Jason Tatum. Uh you know, slight injury.
It's not like he's gonna be out for the entire series,
but he's out. Nonetheless, last night, Jayalen Brown was able
to step up and bust off thirty six points and
(01:07:14):
then for singers, of course is back and was able
to throw in twenty. But this is a team that
I feel like even without Jason Tatum, I think that
they can still win.
Speaker 2 (01:07:32):
I picked them to beat the Lakers in the championship game. Yes,
that's right.
Speaker 1 (01:07:38):
I picked my Lakers, and I did it with my heart,
even though I think Oklahoma City is a better team.
I'm a homer. I'm picking my team. But when I
see Dereck White and when I.
Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
See Richard.
Speaker 1 (01:08:02):
Take the point and sometimes play off guard played two guards,
they go small, they light it up.
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
It's like the starters are in the game. There's no fallback.
There's no.
Speaker 1 (01:08:20):
For lack of a better term, hards, there's no fallof
And I wanted to know, what did you think even
without Tatum. My take is that Boston still wins the
NBA Championship.
Speaker 3 (01:08:37):
There's a possibility of it. I think Boston is one
of the best teams in the NBA. They have been,
They have depth, they have a lot of talent, so
I wouldn't be surprised if they win the championship. But
they definitely in the championship. They definitely need Jason Tatum.
I think Tatum is an intro.
Speaker 1 (01:08:58):
They can't beat oklaham City or they can't beat Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
They're gonna need another scorer like Jason Tatum to be
a part of what they're trying to do.
Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:09:08):
I firmly believe that they're gonna get there, but they
need him to get over the hunt to be able
to be a champion. Another great take. Sorry it was short, folks,
but we went a little alone with our guy Charles Davis.
When we come and having close off close out the show,
send you to Dan Patrick. Make sure you make plans
(01:09:30):
right now to come and hang out with us this
afternoon and we'll tell you where right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred design. If
you missed any part of the show, get over to
our podcast page. As we had one of the greatest
shows that we could possibly have. We had Eric Henry
of Horns twenty four to seven. We also had coach
(01:09:51):
Jim Sloasnago letting us know that Jared Spencer will not
be going this weekend for the Texas Longhorns as they
take on Texas A and M.
Speaker 2 (01:10:01):
We'll have more conversations tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:10:04):
And we finished it off with our Legends of the
Locker Room segment with one Charles Davis. As he broke
it down, he believes that there will be three Texas
Longhorns going in the first round. The conversation is about
the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Cowboys and what their
pick will be, and Nick Harris believes that they will
(01:10:25):
take a wide receiver not named Golden.
Speaker 2 (01:10:29):
NFL Draft around the corner. An important one is always
for the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 14 (01:10:33):
And Nick, I know one guy you think might be
a good pick for this team, wide receiver, TROYA.
Speaker 2 (01:10:39):
McMillan.
Speaker 5 (01:10:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:10:40):
Absolutely, Tero McMillan one of the strongest receiver prospects in
this entire class. For me, he's the top receiver in
this draft. You talk about six foot four, two hundred
pounds and he can jump out of the building. Athleticism
is unreal. That athleticism goes back to his volleyball background.
He was one of the top volleyball prospects and the
entire country coming out of Anaheim. Survided high school in
southern California. You see how that's translated to him being
(01:11:02):
a possession type receiver. The Cowboys haven't had a possession
type receiver since des Bryant. They could certainly go get
their guy to pair with Cede Lamb. I think Tterrolld
McMillan makes a lot of sense at number twelve if
he's available.
Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
We'll see if it's McMillan to the Cowboys out of air.
Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
And then here's the other question, Mark, you and Marcus
Spears all believe the same thing when it comes to
Travis Hunter. Me out, I'm trying to see whatever I
can do to get up to get Travis Hunter, whoa
like if I'm Dallas. I'm trying to figure out whatever
(01:11:37):
I can do, okay, to get up to Travis Hunter.
And it's because not because you feel the need on
both sides of the ball, whatever position you want him
to play, Like at receiver, I would be great with
him being the two not my one right now, right
opposite the Ceedee Lamb. But you think about tray Vonn
and his injuries at cornerback, You think about what he
could do for that defense with him and Michael Parsons
(01:11:59):
being on the same inside, and you build that way
all right.
Speaker 2 (01:12:02):
Now, that's my shocker for the draft.
Speaker 13 (01:12:04):
But I would absolutely explore to see if I could
get up there, especially like I know Cleveland and New
York want to take the best player at two and three.
I don't think Cleveland would shun away from going twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
And maybe they do take a quarterback if they.
Speaker 14 (01:12:19):
Get that Pickreoys, what would they have to give up?
Speaker 11 (01:12:27):
You have to give up everything because now you're not
only in this draft getting the second pick moving up
from twelve, you're getting.
Speaker 2 (01:12:33):
The best football player. And if I'm Cleveland Andrew Berry,
I make you pay for that. Yep, I being right.
Speaker 1 (01:12:41):
Well, just because he said that's what he would do,
don't mean it would be right, but it makes sense.
I mean, yeah, there's a lot of people that probably
won't do that, but you never know if he does
outstanding work. Just like Charles David said, you gonna love
me if that's what ends up happening.
Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
The wildness. But I want you to hear, speaking of wildness.
One of the craziest draft stories, and it just seems
right that it happened to LT And I'm not talking
about Ladany and Tomlinson.
Speaker 14 (01:13:13):
Take us back to your draft day.
Speaker 2 (01:13:15):
What do you remember from the day that you were drinking?
Speaker 8 (01:13:17):
No, I don't remember too much. I had forty one
course like so I couldn't.
Speaker 9 (01:13:22):
Tell you you remember forty one, Yeah, remember forty one,
but you don't remember what happened.
Speaker 8 (01:13:29):
Happened. I just so it was an exciting time. But
it wasn't like this.
Speaker 5 (01:13:33):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:13:33):
We it was old school and I mean it wasn't
in New York or anything. I just caught it on
TV like everybody else. Did you get a phone call?
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
Do you have your family around you?
Speaker 8 (01:13:44):
Did you get a phone call?
Speaker 14 (01:13:46):
You had your family around you?
Speaker 8 (01:13:48):
I had my drinking buddies with me.
Speaker 2 (01:13:54):
It's gotta be LT, always got to be LT. That
is so good. Yeah, he is a wild one.
Speaker 3 (01:14:03):
He is definitely one that continues to have those conversations
and LT will live in infamy forever.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
But the draft is tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:14:15):
I'm excited about the draft, so make sure you come
out and hang out with us as we will be
at Twin Peaks, Round Rock starting at two o'clock.
Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
Will lead you all the way up to the draft.
Speaker 3 (01:14:28):
Myself, Craig Wag, Cam Parker, and of course the world's
strongest man, the Mark Henry the Home.
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
Come be in the house.
Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
You'll actually get a chance to meet Marcus as well,
and hopefully throughout this weekend we'll get a chance to
see a lot of Texas Longhorns names get called.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
We were over at Peaks, Eats, drinks, scenic views. I
see what you're doing that, Marcus.
Speaker 3 (01:14:55):
Make sure you come over there and hang out with us.
We pose the question how many Longhorns would hear their
name called this weekend? The over under is thirteen, and
we said it at thirteen because last year's group had
eleven guys get drafted. Thirteen is the over under. I
(01:15:15):
picked the over. A lot of people seem to be
picking the under, and it's at fifty five percent.
Speaker 1 (01:15:22):
Say under fourteen, I mean under thirteen guys will hear
their names called.
Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
Let's just be honest.
Speaker 3 (01:15:29):
Last year's group Birah Murphy, XAVI, You're worthy to Andandre Sweat,
Jonathan Brooks, at A, nin Mitchell Jatavian Sanders, Christian Jones,
Keelan Robinson, Jalen Ford, Ryan Watts, and Jay Witt. It
was the second most picks for any school in the draft,
and the most by a Texas Lunghorn group.
Speaker 2 (01:15:52):
Here's the deal. We talk about development.
Speaker 3 (01:15:55):
You saw it, You've seen it, and I think we
continue to see it. That's why I believe that over
thirteen guys will have their names called.
Speaker 2 (01:16:06):
This show man.
Speaker 3 (01:16:07):
Yeah outstanding. We had a lot of fun, a lot
of great people. And again, if you missed any parts
of this show, what did he do?
Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
Wrong with you? What are you doing? Get over to
the podcast page.
Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
As always, I want to thank Mark Henry, I want
to thank Marcus Spears, and I want to thank you
the people as always, and just.
Speaker 2 (01:16:28):
Remember this, don't believe everything you.
Speaker 3 (01:16:30):
See because even salt looks like sugar. See you at
Twin Peaks this afternoon from two up into the draft.
Speaker 2 (01:16:38):
I'll let you boy in Round Rock
