Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now, we are being joined by one of the
funniest brothers that has walked the earth. He is Uh,
he came from kung Fu. He's done some amazing things.
He is Donald Rollings and Donald, thank you number one
for joining us this morning. I know you're a busy man,
and you got a show that it's coming on to Austin,
(00:21):
Texas here this week.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Right. I don't know who Donald is.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
I know who Donal Hall is, but I don't know.
Maybe maybe maybe you had Trump on repeat on some
stream yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Maybe your love for the Mega party is what he
carriged you to say that a K A Ashley.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Larry, a K A album, a K A I'm Rid
and whatever else you want to say.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Well, welcome, welcome to the morning kickoff. We're man, I'm
a grown man.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Yeah, you can call him mister.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
To me, he is. Don't call mister.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Only time I hear mister is when somebody about to
get to get arrested.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Please, I don't want to be mister. Call me uncle.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
O G Are they gonna ask you for money?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Excuse me, sir, mister?
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Could I can I interest you in this insurance policy?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Exactly? There's always gonna be a problem, but thanks for
having me this morning.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Guys appreciate Can you please like tell us like you're
like you you travel the world like coming to Austin.
The comedy scene is starting to blossom and b uh,
I can't believe I said blossoming, but I mean, yeah,
excuse me, uh, but but how do you how do
you like the Mothership as opposed to other places that
(01:46):
you travel to.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
I mean it's like I really like the club, and
I mean and all the credit for that, the vision
of it earth has to go to Joe Rogan. Like
the comedy scene in Los Angeles, and particularly if you
go to the Mothership, you understand that a lot of
it is fashioned or styled behind what he came.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Up with them on the Mothership.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
And a lot of times you have people that open
up comedy clubs they don't really invest in making the
comics feel good. When I say that, I mean the
green room, the accommodations, how the room is set up,
the sound, the lighting and everything. So you know, Joe
did a great job of creating a space that everybody
feels comfortable. And just to add to what you're saying
about the comedy scene, It really started to blossom once
(02:29):
when the pandemic hit, when Joe said, Okay, I'm leaving California,
I'm going to Austin, and with that bringing some of
the biggest names in comedy, thom So Gored is down there.
The scene is awesome. It's always been a good city
for music, but right now in the Mothership. I mean,
of course, you know, I do numbers when I perform,
My due sell out audiers, but people are just so
(02:50):
fascinated with the opportunity to experience what He's built there,
and the scene is off the hook. Austin has always
been one of my favorite Citi's performed, especially since my
son is named Austin too, spelled with an E. But
another reason I really enjoyed just coming to Austin because
during the pandemic, you know, I was rocking with Dave
Pappell a lot. He was doing shows I don't know
(03:12):
how you're in the corn fields. And then we had
a residency at Stubbs the Barbecue Place. And when I
tell you, like how a community got connected, how comics
got connected, And I mean we're.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Talking like four or five years.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
So my interest in my excitement coming to Austin especially.
It was there for me at a time when in
the world when nobody was doing anything. It's almost somewhat
of a homecoming when I come there.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
Do you like the fact that you can go there
and feel safe because if you want to work on
new material, they taked all the phones, They put the
EMP system on where you can't get wi fied like
what they do, go the extra lens to keep people
from stealing material as well as allowing you to work
(03:56):
on stuff. Do you use the Mothership as a vehicle
to work on your new material?
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, but I use every every time I go on stage,
I use it as a vehicle to do new material.
And I know do I know it's some interest about
it if people recording or whatever and you're working on stuff.
But at the end of the day, when it comes
to love performances, you know, somebody could see a funny
clip online, you know what I mean. It could be
like a YouTube short or whatever, but it's still something
(04:22):
exciting about getting dressed up, planning the date night and.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Still experiencing that live performance. And when it comes.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
To stealing jokes or whatever, I look at it like this,
I know you know this and I were.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
People are really sensitive to that. But I look at
it like that.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
If it's easy for someone to steal a joke yours
and that wasn't one of your best jokes, you know,
and it makes you have to go deeper and do
jokes that are reflective of you. People can't steal your life,
your life story. But if you got a joke about Dinny,
if you got a joke about Donald Trump, it's kind
of hard to be super super riginal about that because
everybody's tapping the same subject. And at the end of
(04:59):
the day, it ain't it ain't the joke's who's telling it,
you know. Like back in the day, there was some
talking about Robbin Williams used to be a joke thief
or whatever, and people hated that because they knew once
he got a hold of joke, it was his forever,
he was going to own it.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
But I also look at it like, you know, one
joke isn't gonna make your.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Career, you know, it's some sort of some form of
flattery when people say they want to rob you, but
you just got to keep going or do like when
I first started, somebody's doing your joke, you punch them
in the face.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yeah, I was just thinking that.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, the old school man. Yo, man, you know that's
my joke.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, Mark, Mark is a violent person in case he
had noticed.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
You know, it's history, so you know, Big.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Daller gets a little fired up and will put somebody
in the face.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
But we gotta take we back.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
We got to take it back to the day when
people were afraid to get punched in the bate.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yeah, people did deal with that. We're talking to Donelle Rillins.
He will be coming to the Mothership, uh, coming up
this weekend and eight through the tenth.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
I looked online.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
It looks like the shows are all sold out already.
So as you said, you you got you do numbers
every time you come in there. So me and Mark
gonna have to figure out a way to talk to
Joe and figure out a way to get up in there.
But we'll work something out. But I wait, just how
you do it? Just I know how you not?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Don't go in. You go in and say I would
have I want to see Donald today. That's the easiest way.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
But he's gonna be like, uh uh, he already told me,
don't let you in, brother, already let me know.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
So when you come into town, where is the place
you like to go eat? Uh?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
There's this Uh I forgot, man, I can't even see.
There's a couple of places.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
I know.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
There's just one like, uh, very very exclusive sushi bar
that does like about six I forget the name of it.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Inside of it speak easy, I.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, yeah, I definitely gotta get some blacks barbecue.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
That's what I was, without a doubt, no doubt. You
know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
I mean, as much as people love to beat ribs
and everything, but they smoke. Turkey is out of control
over there. So I'm definitely gonna do some barbecue. And
a couple of my friends as restaurants, they usually invite
me down. Again, I don't know exactly the names of it,
but you can't leave Austin without getting some barbecue.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
No doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
And let me ask you this because I know you're
a Washington Commander fan.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
I know that's your squad.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
We are a cowboy fans, so we already how long
we gotta do this?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Damn interview man the way to the bus man. But
but you have had the upper hand.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
You guys have done well. Jaydon Daniels is a beast.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Y'all. Y'all got contract dispute, as do the Cowboys. We
got contract disputes.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
But what is your expectations coming into the season, because
it looks like everything is trending upward for the Commanders.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Let me tell you something, man, that seems it. So
I'm not getting ahead of myself. Last year was a
great season for us, you know, I mean nobody, nobody
would have predicted us to be one game away from
the super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
And I know it's still a building process.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Even if this team went five hundred this year, I
wouldn't be upset about it because I see the potential
and what we have.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
I will say the new ownership and everything.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
What they've done is that they've made it exciting to
go to the games again.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
It seems like the team really cares about.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
You know, a lot of teams when they started to
break down, everybody just wanted to have individual efforts. You
know what I'm saying, Well, I got a thousand yards,
I did my job, but I does not have anything
to do with a team.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Advancing that far.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
So I do look forward to the competitive nature of
the Cowboys and the Commanders. I'm going to say the
Cowboys and Redskins rivalry. That's always something to talk trash about.
And I don't care what happens this year. As long
as the Cowboys don't get further than us, I'm good.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Mad things happen to you and everybody.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Yo, uh, scary Titerry McLaren signs with somebody else.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
That's that's what I think.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
I well, you know what now is everybody has a
tactic when it comes to negotiating.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
You know what I'm saying, Your agent's getting antsy or whatever.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
We don't really know what's going on, but you know
what a player does, like I want to trade right
to try to put some pressure on that team or
see at least what their value is.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
You know what I'm saying. It's be interesting if he
says I want to trade.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
It's very doubtful that a team wouldn't be looking to
try to acquire him or whatever. But I think right
now what's going to happen is already probably by honess happening.
I think a lot of it is show bolting for
the ment men, for the for the media and trying
to let that connection and that be a part of it.
But I think that hopefully he'll be back, you know,
(10:10):
hopefully be back. But then you know your team shouldn't
be your team shouldn't rely on one player. I think
Jay Daniels has the skills to not work with anybody.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
But I look at the sports like this.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Every so often you have a situation where you have
that bench player, that person that wanted the opportunity, and
it is the time to shine and make a name
for himself.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
And we'll see what comes out of that. Yeah, we
cannot weigh.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Football season is upon us, but we cannot wait to
see you August eighth through the tenth. We're gonna have
to see if we can get that cold world. And
it is not Donald, It is done, l Rollins. Make
sure you go and check my brother out. And we
thank you for taking the time to get up with
us this morning.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
I heard you got vocal skills. I want to see
if you can join me in with this song right here.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Hey dude, oh my god, how in an interview? All right,
let's get I appreciate the time, guys, appreciate you, Donald. Donald.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
The restaurant is called I'm a Kazi. That's yeah, that's spot.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yeah exactly, that's my dude.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Man, listen, I'm gonna I'm gonna see you his number.
I just I'm texting with him right now and he
had to tell you to come through.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Me and him used to be when we were doing
the shows in Austin.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
It was interesting because me and I was the director
of craft services, right, so we all we we had
this little thing we used to spend how much money
I get to spend and it's like, just yo, kay,
we only got like twenty dollars. We gotta do beef
pies a day or whatever. But he is he is
my MYO guy. His restaurants are amazing. He's a good guy.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Man.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Like when we did the when we were doing those shows,
we would have lunch every day like one thirty and
then the bubble popped where people started getting COVID and
this was the most exciting part of the day was
the lunch that we will put together. And it went
from like thirty people in that room if you went
to like twenty five to twenty to like three people
(12:08):
with tks like y'all are y'all old man?
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, I love that dude. He's amazing. Man. Well, we
don't try to get down and see you all right,
let me know man, Donald plus one there, it is
all right, God appreciate it. There is Donald L. Rollins.
That's right.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Make sure you go check him out at the Mothership
if you can get a ticket. We'll continue the conversations
right here on the morning kick off on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone
