Speaker 3 (01:00):
Boston, Texas. Good morning Mark Henry, Good morning, my man,
Marcus Spiras want anything down behind the scenes. Good morning fellas.
They messed around and let us get to Friday, and
you believe we made it. We made it. We made
they messed around. Let us get to Friday and what
(01:21):
a jam packed Friday show we have for y'all here
on the morning kickoff sports Radio eight and thirteen hundred
The Zone, Texas football has been the theme all week.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad that football is back.
E is like the like medicine. We've been in hibernation,
you know, with no football. And you know, basketball actually
did a good job of spelling out the scenes and
expanding it out.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Uh so that wasn't such a long But to have.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
This time all be about football is.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
It just makes me back happy again. Mark, you know,
real quick, I didn't even think about what you just
said there. And I don't know how you feel about this.
I don't know where your basketball allegiances are, but for me,
the basketball season didn't feel as short because it was
new blood. Right, we had OKC in Indiana. That's a
good point on your part. It didn't feel like, all right,
(02:20):
it's rinse and repeat. I'm watching another steph lebron et cetera,
Final Giannis, etcetera. So you're right, it did stretch us out,
give us sports fans a little more juice to head
into the summer. But as most definitely football is indeed
here still not quite that click clack out there on
the forty eight care But we're getting there. We're getting there, Hey, Mark,
(02:41):
take time. The positive is the positive is during our
viewing window yesterday, nobody lost in lunch. That's a positive.
That's a that's a step up from a from the
first day, where you know, you got to get the
body acclimated to those one hundred degree tempts. But the
Texas Longhorns, we're back out there on the practice fields
and and listen, I'm just gonna kind of pick up
(03:03):
where we left off from yesterday's show in terms of
and I'm not saying it's all sunshine and roses. You know,
there's still plenty of kinks to get worked out, plenty
of things to figure out between now in August thirty,
twenty nine days till the season opener for the Texas Longhorns.
But Mark, I'm telling you man like, And if you remember,
(03:24):
I said that I was super curious to watch the
offense because I felt that defense would hit the ground running.
I felt that defense would already be in place. I'm
not saying it's a finished product yet, but the athleticism
is off the charts, Mark. I honestly, I'll give it
to you on this and this is a message for
you and for Longhorn fans. I can't wait for y'all
(03:45):
to get eyes, your first set of eyes on this
year's Texas team, and I want you to view it
through the prism of where Steve Sarkisian and Company started
at five and seven, because I wasn't here for five
and seven. But I'm telling you right now, this team
from US size athletic playmaking just numbers perspective, Mark Well,
(04:05):
it looks like a national talk contender.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
You are preaching to the choir because I've been saying
that Texas cupboard was full. They had at least two
or three people at every position that could play anywhere
in the country. And you know, talking to insiders like
you who are on the sidelines that practices. I talked
(04:32):
to a couple of other guys yesterday and the running backs,
they said, look like defensive alignment. And I'm that's the
thing that I you know, I told you like, the
thing that's going to help Texas the most is the
powerful running game. Arch Man needs to be able to
(04:52):
lean on a running game so the play action works.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
And from what I'm hearing from you and and War
and the Chip.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Browns and all the guys that I respect in the
radio and sports media world have told me, Mark, these
running backs look like like tight ends with speed, and
that's that's something that I'm looking forward to seeing.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
It's funny you mentioned that too, because again I've talked
about back when I used to cover group of fives.
You're right, CJ. Baxter, Jarrett Gibson, Christian Clark. Those look
like linebackers at that level, like elite linebackers, defensive ends,
and that tells you the difference between I should even
say this group of five, Mark, there's some power four teams,
you know, some powerfol teams in the SEC, you know,
(05:41):
the Mississippi States and bandits of the world that have
d ns and linebackers that are the size of these
Texas running backs. I'm gonna flip it to the wide
receiver room because I know Mark, and first off, before
I even get to that, let me just say thank
you for the opportunity to do the show all week
with you. It's been a pleasure. But in doing the
show with you, I've gotten a chance to kind of
(06:02):
glean that I know, something you respect is confidence, something
is putting saying it with your chest. And a guy
that we I don't want to say, we haven't talked
about him a ton, but he kind of goes a
little under the radars DeAndre Moore and Mark. I want
you to hear this sound from yesterday's availability when DeAndre
Moore is talking about not only the team goals but
(06:23):
his own personal goals for the twenty twenty five seasons.
Here's the sound of DeAndre Moore. First and foremost, I
want to win a Nattie.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I think we've got to the doorstep two years in
a row, too too many for my liking. So I
want to win the National championship. We got, you know
short at the SEC Championship. I want to win the
SEC Championship. As far as personal, I want the text
to touchdown record. I want at least twelve hundred yards,
and I want to win the Blinda goofs.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
He wanted, Oh, he wanted, all, well, say it with
your chest.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
But see that's that's the thing.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
When you walk and you're like kind of subconscious about the.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Room you walk in, and you think, oh, I don't
want to step on anybody's toes.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
You know what a coach wants a coach wants you
to be able to walk in with such confidence and
such willingness to.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Work that.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
He doesn't have to worry whether or not his team
is up.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Every coach's dream.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Is to have guys that push the buttons of the
other players so they don't have to. And being in
team sports, always found that there were one or two
alpha guys that they spoke for us.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
They spoke for the group.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
They spoke for the team, and they also spoke for
the coaches. Coach shouldn't have to tell you to do something.
You should want to do it. And when you hear
DeAndre talk, you know that he is an alpha guy
and he's saying I want to do that. I want
to win the national championship? What do we got to
(08:03):
do to do that? And that's that makes that makes
everything else fall into place.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Marcus, what's just you know, your thoughts when you hear that,
because I mean, I'm not gonna lie DeAndre Moore. I
always respected and enjoyed his Cali swag, his confidence, you know,
but just as as another lapers as a fan, your
thoughts when you hear someone say, hey, I want the Natty,
I want the SEC title, I want the blittant cough,
I want everything we missed out on last year.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
It reminds me of the movie scoff Face when it
says the world is yours.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Wow, simple as that, Andxas can Texas can do that?
Like you know, we always say, well, you know Arch,
it's not.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
Just about Arch. Arch is a very important piece.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
But and you want to have a quarterback that knows
the system and that fits the system. But it's a
team sport like Arch can't get off without the running game.
The running game can't get off without the offensive line.
And you want your offense to have more possessions than
of the opposing team, so the defense has to take
(09:13):
the ball away. So all of these factors, and your
coaches cannot fall asleep because you have talent, because you
can be out coached. So you have to have people
that have a plan and a strategy together.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
And you know, there's a book.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Called the Art of War, and the Art of War
talks about the rules of engagement.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
And when you.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Have your team or you have your warriors so prepared,
so mentally focused that they're telling you what the plan
should be, you win. And I feel like that's what
we get Menharj. We've said multiple times it sounds like
(10:01):
everybody is like a recording because they say the same things.
How they're bought in, how they they loved, the way
coach Sarkesian addresses them and talks to them like adults,
that they don't call them kids. That's that's something that's important.
(10:21):
I don't I don't as a as a young man.
I don't want to be called a kid. Don't call
me boy, don't call me son, none of that.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Men. This is what we have to do today.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
And you know what I want to piggyback on some
of you guys were discussing earlier because me and Eric
talked about this off air earlier this week. This could
be the deepest running back room Texas has had since five.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
And that's saying a lot because that running room that
they had, they had guys that had speed guys, they
had guys that was.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Screamed and tunnel guys.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
They had a banger, a guy that just mashed it
up in and then they had a guy that was
kind of a third down catch the ball out the
backfield run the out Texas used you know during that time,
they threw the ball out of the backfield like a
running play. Just swing it out there and let the
(11:17):
guy get the edge. And well, I think that Texas
can do that right now.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
No doubt about it. The cupboard is far from beer.
It is full, and we will see how it turns
out on the forty Acres. But we will talk more football.
Go to the NFL in a moment. Morning kickoff. We're
just getting started on AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It
is the morning kickoff here on AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
(11:49):
Eric Henry twenty four to seven Sports Pinch Hit one
final day Hardball Hards World strongest Man Mark Henry. Of
course with me and Mark, football is indeed back. We're
gonna make our way from the forty Acres over to
the NFL. And I don't want to steal all your
(12:09):
thunders because I know that you got a little sumpter
for us in the World's Strongest take that came out
of that Hall of Fame game. But just got to
ask you your general thoughts. You know I can I
can lead off first, give you a little time here
that Hall of Fame game. I know some people don't
like it because they, oh, it's only third stringers. It's
only guys who are going to be, you know, working
(12:30):
at Jiffy Loube in four weeks. I never liked that mark,
even going back to being a kid man like I
always just that first Hall of Fame game. I didn't
care if it was you know, walk on free agent
rookies trying to get a job. It's football. It's guys
in pads in NFL jerseys, you know, no disrespect, and
in the other leagues and in some of the spring leagues,
(12:52):
but it's guys in NFL jerseys running around trying to
make a team. I always just get that warm and
fuzzies if I see the Hall of Fame game mark.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Yeah, well, I mean it's the time of the year,
like we're coming in, we're seeing the college football practices,
we see the NFL training camp start to kick off,
and then you see the Hall of Fame game. And
of course you see the guys that's second, third, fourth team.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Guys, guys that are not gonna be on the roster.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
But that's fine with me because you get to see
the structure of the offense, the defense, in the way
that you do things. And I respect the guy that's
gonna be working at Jiffy Lud. I respect the guy
that got an opportunity, but his real thing is he
works at home depot, or he's got his own business,
or he's just trying to live the dream. I respect
(13:44):
every one of those guys because you need an opportunity.
And you know, they always like that commercial that says
that talks about college sports, and he says, all of
these people that play this sport will be a professional
in something that may not be this sport that they're playing.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
That's the nature of everybody.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Professional sports is lightning striking and twice in the same spot,
you know, Like I mean, there's only six hundred and
forty four NFL.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Spots, six hundred and forty four.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
For then I mean fifty three men on each team,
and then the alternates, the guys that are in the
training camp and the practice squads and stuff. Maybe double
it a little bit, but really there's only six hundred
and forty four core people. That's a small room.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Eric.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
You can get all you can get those people on
a basketball court, and that just tells you how small
and how incredible opportunity is. But I'm so excited, man,
I love it so much. When the season starts because
I just love sports.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
I just love football.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
And you know, there's a lot of the conversations about
CTE and uh other different things, and all the athletes saying,
if I could do it all over again, I would
still play because I'm good at it one and it
makes me feel good. And if I if I lose
(15:21):
ten years off my life or I end up with
in a wheelchair or I got to walk with a.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Cane, then so be it.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
My family is going to benefit from this sport that
we play in love. So these guys, it's a great
time of year, and all of these guys, they sign
up for it. Man, So we're back at it, and
I'm I'm I'm willing. I'm excited about where it's gonna go.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
And this is what I got to say about the
hype coming into the Hall of Fame game on a
year basis, what do what doctor says when they give
you new medication, They always tell you to take small dosage.
So this is the way I look at it when
it comes to the Hall of Fame Game. It's a
small doses of the what you what ails your pain,
which is the lack of football and the fact that
(16:10):
football is starting and the hype trainer is about to
get rolling.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Right. It's a it's a small dose, but like you said,
it just it just gives you something, give you some comfort,
that's all, you know. And also just to kind of
put a cap on on the conversation around you know,
some of these guys who likely aren't going to be
in the league. Uh, you know four or five weeks.
Who is a love a good underdog story? Mark Marcus
is an underdog story. So go ahead, go ahead, Mark.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
You know, not only the underdog story, but the story
of opportunity. Like you, we talk about America as a whole.
You know, you want an opportunity. They call this the
land of opportunity. Sports is the same way you come
into it as a little kid and you realize, you know,
(16:57):
sometimes people don't grow. I've seen so many guys that
were five to five that were great ball players, five
to nine linebacker.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
I mean we had that win.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
You might, you know, Eugene Seal, you had the exceptions
to the rules at Thomas Every now and then it works.
But that's one out of hundreds of thousands of guys.
Like the opportunity is the most important thing. What you
do with the opportunity is where the times.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
To row and we don't know who that that that story,
that guy that's gonna come out of nowhell. Think about
it like this, So Terrell Davis came out of nowhere back.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
In the days, Arian Foster came out of nowhere.
Speaker 5 (17:40):
Just guys who were who probably was was not predicted
to make their rosters, not even drafted, and they make
the roster and become either super superstars and Hall of famers.
That happens all the time in the NFL. That's what
type of league it is, no.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Doubt about it. Yeah, coming off of last night's game
San Diego Chargers defeat of the Detroit Lions, third or
I said, san Diego Los Angeles Chargers, what did.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
You think about Hampton at running back?
Speaker 3 (18:12):
You know, I only had like a couple of carries.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
But what he looked the part I wish you to
kind of, you know, put a little bit more lean
into that line. It looked like he was trying not
to get his prime dress dirty.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
That's a great li Mark. I'm gonna steal that one.
That's a great line. So you know right now I'm
gonna steal that one. I will credit you what I
steal it in writing I'm gonna steal that one, you know,
the thing with him and and a lot of the
backs one of his elk it feels and I think Mark,
you alluded to this a little bit, and we talked
about him in terms of what rookies we wanted to see.
Does he kind of fit that Saquon Barkley as like
(18:49):
mold build, right, you know, a thicker build with a
dynamic kind of ability. So that's definitely kind of my
early impressions kind of carrying over from therth Carolina. We'll
be intrigued to see how he's used in that offense.
But no, that that definitely is a good call out,
no doubt.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
God, Mark, a lot of these guys, they don't want
to get injured, not in not in the first game
or game that doesn't count. That's why you usually see
a lot of veterans kind of hold out of the
preseason games and not getting not playing at all. I mean,
you look at their sideline, they had about six eight
guys that were in dress clothes. Yeah, like they weren't.
(19:30):
They didn't even dress suit up for the game. So
that that's that tells you all you need to know, Marker.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
What's one more topic I want to get to you
real quick in terms of talking about it is, of course,
it is Hall of Fame Weekend, Hall of Fame Induction.
The guys will get their bust their rings, and we're
talking to a w W Hall of Famer who proudly
sports is WW Hall of Fame ring and Mark, Henry Mark.
Is there one player in your time watching sports? So
(20:00):
let's be football, but one player who either hasn't gotten
the distinction of being a Hall of Famer or just
didn't get that ring, came close but didn't get that
ring that you wish man. I wish they could experience
the feeling that you know, of being honored that way.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
You know what, There's some guys that have gone in
the Hall of Fame but they still didn't get the
ring right.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
And the guys that didn't get the that didn't get
the championship.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
I wish Charles Barkley in basketball would have won a ring.
I wish that Patrick Ewing would have wan would have
run won a ring.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Uh football?
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Uh, Barry Sanders man as good as Barry Sanders was.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
I wish that he would have been had the.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Distinction of being a champion. Randy Moss, you know, a
wide receiver. It was a guy that he did. I mean,
Moss was better than the Randy Moss that was on
the video game. And on the video game you could
just throw it near him and he would catch it
and score a touchdown. That's how good Randy Moss was
(21:11):
for you.
Speaker 3 (21:12):
Warren Moon, Warren Moon is one.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
I mean, but you know what like when you start
talking about quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
You know there's a few.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Jim Kelly played in four Super Bowls.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Man, damn he.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Was closed, and I wish that he would have gotten one.
And I'm not I'm never was a Bills fan, but
I was a Jim Kelly fan because he did everything
he could do on his part, but it just didn't happen.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
I'll sneak my two in real quick with Danny and
Tomlinson and of course just tough with damn Marino. Those
are my Oh want to kickoff. We'll be back in
a moment. AM thirteen hundred the Zone morning kickoff And man,
what a smile came over my face to hear that song.
(22:09):
That is Mark and Marcus. As a kid, I mean,
I remember I was eight nine years old. When that
album dropped, I had my older brothers, older cousins listen to.
That were the first albums I've ever listened to all
the way through. Jay z oh Man, what an album,
because it is time Mark hards Knock's life. Let's go,
(22:30):
let's go.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
And you're not here with us, but you representing him,
so let's have it.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
And this is what I feel strongly about Mark Marcus
is this is a good keyboard warriors man. Listen. You
know marked a job, Marked an excellent job in the
previous segment talking about sports and kind of the camaraderie,
and it brings us together, right, you know, it's things
of supports fans. We all look forward to the things
that we just enjoy. And I'm all here Mark and
(22:59):
Marcus for you know some spit talk. You know, we'll
do you that way, right. I love a little back
and forth, little barbershop talk. You gotta have that in sports.
That's what make sports fun. But there are lines, and
a model that I live by is disrespect will not
be tolerated in any form, in any form, No, it
(23:19):
won't be tolerated. Mark. I'm gonna give you an example, right,
something that happened to me very recently. I had someone
who didn't like something that I wrote about texts football,
and that's fine. That comes with territory, right. I work
a job that's public. That comes with the territory. Yeah,
sandwich you chest. But I had someone on a social
(23:41):
media app say, oh, man, I wish I could beat
up Eric Henry for these dumb takes. Not on horns
twenty four to seven, tweet this publicly behind the little
avatar of something that's not They face the little ai
avatar because they don't have anough, you know, fortitude to
(24:01):
put their real face out there. And fellas, I have
a simple reply to people who get that aggressive when
it comes to how they feel. I said, I'm local.
That's how you feel. I'm local. I'm not. I'm not
I'm not another city, I'm not in another state. I'm local,
(24:24):
saying come see me. And then the person as outside,
how about that? And then the person said tweeted back, oh,
what are you trying to get? You think you think
I'm dumb enough to talk about beating you up on
a public form? What type of what type of a cop?
Undercover cop? Are you? I said, no, I simply said,
I'm local, that's how you feel, and you said all
(24:45):
that was chess. You can come find me because a
media entrance outside Daryl K. Royal Texas Orial Stadium. I'm
there three and a half hours before every game. I'm local.
It's as simple as that. And then again it was
back and down. All you're making this more than it is.
These keyboard warriors, Mark and what says, I'm sure you've
dealt with them. Well, I'm gonna tell you right off
(25:07):
the bat.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
You're always gonna have people that are gonna disagree with you.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Get used to it.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
The people that challenge you, if they challenge you by
via message, smoke, signal, facts, email, whatever else, the means
of communications, they.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Have zero intent.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
A man will walk to you and say, hey, you're
Eric Henry right, Yeah, Hey man, I'm so, and so
I'm the guy that you were talking about. I don't
agree with your take, and then you can debate with
that man man to man, face to face.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
That's how you do it.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
And then if they say, well, I mean I don't
want you to say that about me no more.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
And then you got to you gotta be the guy
say oh what are what? And and that that's how
it's done. That's the way men operate.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
The cowards are gonna sue you when you punch them
in the face.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
So you can't really put your hands on nobody no more.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
You know, Man, I would be locked up for a
long time if I beat up everybody that said something
bad about me. But I look at it like this.
If I did something that made you feel so emotional
that you had to.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
Put something on paper or put something.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Out there in the atmosphere that was that was aggressive
and negative, I already won. I own you already. So
take that with you for the rest of your life.
These people that come for you and they don't come
for you in person. They're absorbed and ate up with
(27:00):
you being better than them, and they know it.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
And you on some man's stuff. And you know what he.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Your boy Chip Brown used to say this quote here
in Austin all the time, and it's from Rick Flair.
If someone ain't hating you all the time, you probably
ain't doing something right.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
So that tells me you're doing something right. You're doing
something right, sir. That is so true.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
And I tell you what, man, you know, And in
order to be the man, you gotta beat the man.
To quote Ric Flair again, like be better than me,
and then I'll say, you know what, you were right,
But until then, get on out of here with that
alcate coch wearing hush puppy shoes, wearing crumpet, don't make
me go there, Get out of here with that man.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
Can't can't say they better than that, Mark. And another
reason why I felt like it's appropriate to have this
conversation with you is because we've all seen those clips.
We're wrestling fans, the three Mark of course a former wrestler.
We've all seen those clips of guys who hit the
ring right because they get so fired up at what happened,
and then and then they get under the ropes, they
stand up like, oh, oh, Mark, I shouldn't have done this.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Are you talking about the traditional fan trying to run
up in the ring correct?
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:19):
It don't go well for them when they get beat
up on the referee.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
The referees are using pretty tough too.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
But I remember we were in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Caine
was having a match. I can't remember who he had
to match against right now, but it was in a cage.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
A guy climbed the cage. You find it on the internet.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
The guy climbed the cage, got in the ring with
Cain and hit Caine in the back. And Cain then
was like, what is going on and turned around and
saw it was a guy that came out of the crowd.
Speaker 3 (29:01):
He stumped this dude.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
I'm telling you, it looked like it looked like a movie.
It looked like Friday. It looked like Debo hit over
and and and took it was. It was one of
the worst drubbings in the history of whoopings. And I
don't I don't advise nobody to go into the field
(29:23):
of play. We've seen people go on the football field
and football players just clean their clock and then the
security grabs him and drags them off. Like, don't don't
do that, fans. I mean, you know what, man, I'm
a fan of sports too. But you just in the
in the words of Ron Simmons, which The Rock took
(29:44):
the words from Ron Simmons, know your.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Role, Know your role, guys, what a good hard knock life. Man,
Come on here, you're killing it. Oh man, Then you
have to so just a little message out there to
the keyboard wires man, you know, just think twice. Keep
the peace, Keep the peace simple as that. Want to
(30:09):
kickoff AM thirteen hundred Zone. We're flying strong. We'll be
back in a moment. It is the morning. Kickoff here
on AM thirteen hundred zone. World strongest Man Mark Henry,
Eric Henry, twenty four to seven Sports Pinch it for hardball.
Hart's one final day. On this Friday, Marcus spears on
(30:31):
the ones in Friday. Everybody Happy Friday, Happy Friday. I
see Barcus definitely enjoying himself for that little tune he
played bringing his back out of break right there.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Hey man, everybody gotta dance a little jig every now
and then.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
You have to. You have to before we dive into
a little bit of baseball. Gotta give you all your
final keyword, because I know you've been listening all week.
You've been listening all week for a chance to win
a pair of tickets to see Ghost August fourteenth at
Moody Center. Make sure if you're gonna enter, you gotta
do on the iHeartRadio app search AM thirteen hundred the zone,
tap the red microphone, leave us a message with the
(31:05):
keyword you heard on the radio, and the final keyword
is Empire. Don't think I need to spell that one
for you. Sure like that Empire? Hey man, Look there's
plenty of pop culture references that have Empire. Okay, so yeah,
come on, Marcus, that is your final keyword. It is Empire. Two.
(31:28):
When a pair of tickets to see Ghosts August fourteen
at Moody Center. There you have it, fellas one time
to a little bit of MLB talk, Because of course,
the Houston Astros made a deal. Marcus Spears is Houston
Astros made a deal to bring back Carlos Korea to
(31:51):
the Houston Astros. And this time of year, Mark, it's
always were I know, we talked about this earlier in
the week, and I'm glad we're gonna get a chance
to get to it now. Trade deadline in baseball's unlike
anything other because sometimes you see guys getting traded mid game,
guys getting traded between double headers. And I talked to
(32:11):
you about this earlier this week, Mark about the pitcher
was traded from Baltimore to Toronto in between a double
header where he literally was suited up for one team
the first game, and then in between the double header,
he's having to walk out to the bullpen, his old
teammates have given him a hard time, and then he
(32:31):
goes to strikes out three or strikes out two three
of his former teammates. Just incredible. And then Mark, I
sent you a clip and didn't have a chance to
check it out. No worries of a player gun trick
in the Tampa Bay race of New York Yankees on
the flip side. Just the emotion, the you know, the
raw emotion. The other way I can say it, this
guy like you saw Mark, a player, a teammate of
(32:52):
his who came back to the dugout and was like,
where are you going? And you can't see him mouth
the words I got traded, and his teammates like what
and the emotion, Mark, Isn't that just the most bizarre thing? Yeah?
It is.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
And even last night, you know, there was so much
that happened in the baseball world with the trades. You
had a player that still had his belt and shoes
on from the team that he played with the day
before because the team didn't have his size in shoes
and belt and I'm like, what, like, so, I mean
(33:29):
I would have I would have taken some tape and
put it around the belt, so you know, you couldn't
tell that it was a belt for another team.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
But you know, that's just me. That's just me. And
one of the things that I find fascinating I think
it speaks to excuse me, the athletic mindset, that the
athlete mindset excuse me is the average person, you know,
you don't go and you're working for State Farm, and
he gets traded to all State, you know, down the rubble, right,
(33:58):
and then you got to be like, man, I put
in ten years and stay farther. It's traded me, right.
You know, the average person doesn't get traded from Target
to Walmart. But that athlete mentality to be able to say,
all right, I still got to lock in, Like the
mid game one is the one that just I still
got to be able to lock in.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
And you don't even have time, you ain't have time
to be emotional about it. And you know what, man, Like,
I'm sitting here and I'm thinking to myself, it's a
business and there's gonna be changed, there's gonna be turnedover.
And you know, Chris del Conte talked about that the
one constant in sports is change. There will be changed,
(34:41):
But that don't mean that you cannot be emotional, that
you cannot have I mean, I'm a Cowboy fan, and
we talked about this not long ago. I wanted to
quit being a Cowboy fan because I was just so
tired of the disappointment by the ownership. But every time
(35:02):
I thought about another team, it just kind of made
me nauseous. And if that's the way that it really is,
imagine how those guys feel. If I'm that way as
a fan, how do they feel?
Speaker 3 (35:22):
Mitt?
Speaker 2 (35:22):
I mean, like, now I got to put on another
jersey and go play against the team that.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
I loved and.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Worked with and bled and sweated with these guys, It's
got to be a really hard, you know, like a
hard decision, like you just gotta feel like really kind
of off.
Speaker 5 (35:45):
The craziest thing I've seen was just last season with
Danny Jensen was traded and technically he played for both
teams in the same game because it was a rain out,
and when they finished the game, he played for.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
The other team.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Yeah, And Marcus, I didn't want to ask you again,
as I alluded to your Houston Astros. The Stros are
big of what a four and a half game lead
on Seattle five and a half game lead on the
Texas Rangers in the Al West. Marcus, how do you
feel about Carl's career coming back home? Oh, I'm just
so excited. I didn't I didn't think it was actually possible.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
I thought, oh, yeah, they just shooting a shot and
you know, seeing what happens. And then all of a sudden,
I'm talking to a guy at the GETT. My all
changed yesterday and he was like, oh, they did it.
I'm like, whoa wait, what astros got Carell So you
know what, either he's gonna play third or he's gonna
play second. It strengthens strengthens the defense, and we got
(36:43):
another bat al two. We can just focus on hitting,
So you know what, it's all good with me.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
Man. One of the things that you know, Mark, I
got to give it back to you in this realm.
I was trying to toy around him, like, Man, you know,
would that be the equivalent of getting traded from raw
to SmackDown? But it wouldn't because it's the same company.
It'd be the equivalent of nineteen ninety eight Nation of Domination,
Mark Henry getting traded to w c W for who
and Mark, would you be upset they I mean, listen,
(37:10):
I don't want to disrespect any wrestler, all right, but
if they traded you for a wrestler, you it was
under your value. I'm like, come on, man, I main event.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Man.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
You can't trade me for two of those guys.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Come on, you at least trade me for like you know,
big Papa Pump or somebody something you know that trade
me for booking t man.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Right right right? Something least? All right? You feel like, hey,
I'm a I'm a I'm a commodity, right, you know,
you get for an underneath guy. You're like, hold on
a second, I got I got two future pigs, like, man,
don't trade me for no pigs.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
And cash consideration that's the one that's the Mars consideration.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
That's the worst. Oh my gosh, yeah, cat money cap
money got cash considerations player to be named later. That
always is the one that gets me right there, you know.
And I love when the teams create the graphic, right
when what have we received in return? And they show
a little bag of money?
Speaker 2 (38:16):
Right yeah, I guarantee you that the fans that are
listening to the show today as somebody guys, if you laughing,
pull over we don't want to endanger nobody.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
Having a good time here. It is more than kickoff
AM thirty hundred Zone, Mark, Henry, you are leaving us,
my man. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to
be with y' all week, sir brother.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
It was an honor and I can't wait to be
able to have you do it again.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
Here. You got morning Kickoff. Ain't thirteen hundred Zone, It
is the morning Kickoff here on AM thirteen hundred of
the Zone. World strongest man, Mark Henry Hardball hard Mark's
got to go make that money, so I am flying.
So of course Hardball hart enjoined the final day of
his well deserved vacation, but still got my guy, Marcus
(39:06):
Gears hold anything down behind the scenes. And of course
you missed the Craigway Show, which you shouldn't. But if
he did two to six, you're on AM thirteen hundred
of the Zone. You can always catch it. Listen to
the Craigway Show podcast, available on the iHeartRadio app or
wherever you listen to podcasts. Marcus, the way we open
(39:31):
the show today, of course, I think is going to
be the way a lot of shows are opened around
here over the next four months with Texas football and
just kind of want to pick up where we left
off in that first hour there. You know a lot
of the leaders, Marcus, the guys who you know have
(39:51):
e merged, the guys who were shaped, were molded by
last year's thirteen win team, twenty twenty three's twelve win
team molded by the jalen Force, the Devandre Sweats, the
Byron Murphy's, the Jordan Whittington's, you know. I mean, we
heard DeAndre Moore in our number one talking about his goals,
right to win a national championship, to win the SEC championship,
(40:14):
to win the Bolitnikoff, and I think about how he
learned under the at the foot of a guy like
a Jordan Whittington. Right, Just the the culture, the way
that it's been passed down from kind of team to team.
And this where I'm going to ask you a question. Mark.
Of course, Marcus, you be being a Texan and you know,
(40:35):
following this team, this program, you know, for the entire life.
That's one of the things I think when you hear
about the great programs, right the USC's when when USC
had its run in the two thousands, right when Miami
had its run in the two thousands, when you know,
I'll hopefully this doesn't get tomatoes thrown at me, but
you know, oh you had had a little bit of
(40:57):
run in the two thousands, you know Texas when Vince
Young came. One of the things I always remember hearing
about those teams Florida, right, the Tim Tebow, the Urban
Meyer years, etc. The list goes on, is how it
got passed down from team to team, right, That's how
things continued on? Is that that culture, that mindset. It
(41:20):
was a privilege to take the baton from those guys
who laid the found work, that laid the foundation excuse me,
and push it forward. Does that encourage you when you
hear guys like DeAndre Moore and we're gonna play excuse me,
we're gonna toss with some sound in a second of
guys like Ethan Burke and others talking about the culture
but first, does that encourage you when you hear guys
(41:42):
who they're just picking up where the previous players left off,
not just from an onfield perspective, but the drive, the mentality,
the aspirations markers.
Speaker 5 (41:52):
That tells me that guys are learning not only how
to play the game and how to play the game together,
but they learning how to be leaders on and off
the field. And when you become leaders, it has to
pass down because pretty much when somebody when you see
a leader and you're young and you start to pay
attention to them and you want to learn how they
(42:14):
get there, and then you become a leader yourself. The
chain only gets broken when when either the leaders are
not leading.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
Or the followers stop following. And part of the reason
I want to get Marcus respective, of course, you know,
I don't know if he said this on air, but
I'll reveal. Of course he'm being a veteran, he understands
chain of command. Yeahs go there you go, Marcus. Yeah,
definitely chain of command. Uh, because you're looking up to.
Speaker 5 (42:44):
Someone who who who who experienced things that you haven't
experienced yet. So as you climb, you know, as you climb,
you learn, you pay attention and that they will tell
you instead of you know, how they say listen, but
sometimes you got to hear also because you know, if
you know you I said that backwards, you you got
(43:06):
to listen, not just here I said it backwards. But yeah,
and that's the key because sometimes people will tell you
something and you don't know what it means, so long
as that person is there. So when you ask the
question and you're not questioning the challenge, your question to
learn and they're willing to teach. That's so now when
you're the one that has to lead, you can pass
(43:29):
that message on down because now you understand not only
what needs to be done, but why it needs to
be done.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
And that's a perfect segue into this sign we're going
to play. This is defensive end Ethan Burke, who is
fitting that whole thing chain of command, coming down from
a veteran leader. Of course, he was a starter in
twenty twenty three, did not start last year, but got
plenty of playing time with the mergers of Colin Simmons
and Baron Sorell. Now he's in his senior year and
(43:57):
he talks about a his own expectation, the culture, and
what he learned from Baron Sorell. Here is Ethan Burk
from yesterday's availability.
Speaker 6 (44:06):
I think, so yeah, I think I've had I think
I've had spurts where I've been elite, But just for
me just being consistent every time I step out on
the field.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
Just being the best version of myself.
Speaker 6 (44:17):
What do you feel like you learned from Baron Sall
while being around to him for the last few years
from Baron such a great teammate and leader for me,
a guy who I am so grateful just to have,
you know, playing with and be on the other side
as and for a whole year. He just taught me
work ethic, right. He He's a guy who puts his
(44:39):
head down, doesn't doesn't talk, he doesn't show bone. He's
not flashy and like the media may not love all
that because he's not the most flashy guy, but he
is a hard worker. And he's been such a consistent
like player for this program, and just to learn from
him has been great. I couldn't have asked for like
a better iss you say, mentor he.
Speaker 3 (44:58):
Should some of those those other tendencies. What's it like
being on the other side him.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
On the line?
Speaker 6 (45:06):
Yeah, Colin is just a great player and someone who's
great the playoff, playoff of for the interior guys and
the other and the for me on the other end.
Speaker 3 (45:17):
And just communication.
Speaker 6 (45:18):
And he's upbeat, fun guy to be around.
Speaker 3 (45:22):
You know.
Speaker 6 (45:22):
I've grown grown really close to him, So it's been outstanding.
Speaker 3 (45:27):
A lot to chew on. There you heard about Ethan
Burke talking about him having spurts, feeling he's had spurts
where he's been elite, but now looking to put that
together consistently. I will start there. I couldn't agree more, Marcus.
You know, Ethan Burke is a guy who I think
he's the perfect edge player for this year's team. Maybe
(45:48):
he wasn't the best edge player for you know, previous
years teams and how but I say not the best.
I'm not saying that, you know, he wasn't a good player,
and I'm talking about terms of fit, right because you
know last year, Baron Sorell of course a much better players.
The reason Baron Serell was drafted where he was, And
I guess you know, maybe much is a little strong,
but a more well rounded player, right, Baron Surrel of
(46:10):
course with the Green Bay Packers, and of course Colin Simmons.
But this year you're gonna need a guy. You're gonna
need a guy, Marcus, who yes, the interior defensive line.
They'll do their job in run defense, they'll do their
job in stuffing the run. But Colin Simmons, you know,
and Colin, to his credit, has said that he wants
to play the run better as well. But you know,
(46:31):
if it's third and anything over four, he's looking to
pit his ears back and go rush the quarterback. If
it's second and long, he's looking to go pin his
ears back and rush the quarterback. You have a guy
like Ethan Burke, who you know he's going to do
all of the fundamentals right, set the edge, be an
excellent run defender. But now if he can take his
game to the next level, Marcus, that would be huge
(46:53):
for Texas football. And one more thought, just hearing him
talk about what he learned from Baron right saying, you know,
Baron's not a guy who isn't the flashiest, and that's true.
Baron Sorel was never the most flashy guy. But you
saw his value with Texas football. You saw an NFL veteran,
a future five six, seven eight nine year NFL VET
(47:16):
because he did everything the right way. He did everything well,
always accountable, always in the right place, and those things matter, Marcus.
So to tie the conversation all the way back together,
I think this just spells and it's like you heard
me say before, I'm not see it's all sunshine and
Roses so early, but it just spells like this could
(47:42):
be the start of something really special for Texas football
seer Marcus.
Speaker 5 (47:46):
Yes, definitely, it's the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
Indeed, it is another piece of sound I want to
get you real quick on defense is Jalen Gilber. Because
of course there was a lot of talk of well,
where's Gilbo gonna play. He's gonna play star, He's gonna
play corner. Well, Jalen Gilbo Marcus is betting on himself
in the same way Jadde Baron bet on himself making
the move from star to outside corner. Here is Jalen
(48:15):
Gilbot talking about why he made the move to the corner.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
I talked to coach McKenna and I talked to coach
Oh about moving outside.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
I want to just show, like everybody that I can cover,
you know what I mean. That was the most important thing.
I was in the box half the time in Nickel,
So I just want to prove myself and show everybody
that I can cover at corner too. Really love the
way these guys are embracing the challenge against Jalen Gilbo
is another guy who I don't think you think about
him in the same realm as Jade Baron or maybe
(48:42):
you know hardcore Texas fans do, But I don't think
the average fan. I don't think the broader college football
fan thinks of him in the same rum with Jade Baron.
But you gotta remember, this is a kid who started
over Jaddey Baron when he first arrived at Texas in
terms of at the star position. He had all of
the physical tools, all of the traits hell of an athlete.
(49:03):
He's not gonna get out run by anybody out there.
Tak you that for sure. There's no speed burner in
the sec that he can't run with. And it's gonna
be really interesting to see how that battle shapes up.
To play opposite of Manny Muhammad, I know, defensive corner
or pet Kokowski. When I asked him, he said, all
jobs are up for grabs, but you know, Manny Muhammad
is going to be there at his spot at corner.
And to see how Jalen Gilbo emerges and take on
(49:26):
that challenge that is going to be huge because he's
gonna be pushed by guys like Kobe Black and Warren
Roberson and Iron Sharpens. Iron I think that's the biggest
thing you can take away from here. But Jalen Gilbot
betting on himself, hoping to have similar results the same
way as Jade Baron did in earning a Thorpe Award
and becoming an NFL first round pick. We'll be back
(49:50):
morning kickoff and thirteen hundred Zone Real Strongest Man, Mark Henry,
Hardball Hart Herrick Henry twenty four to seven Sports. Pinch
hitting for the fellas. We'll be back in the moment.
It is the morning kickoff here on eight and thirteen
hundred The Zone. Mike Hardball harj last day of his
well deserved vacation. Hard to be back on Monday. The
(50:12):
world's strongest Man, Mark Henry. He is off in New
Jersey at SummerSlam making that money. So they have left
the keys. They left the keys to the house and
hope that we don't burn it down. Eric Henry, twenty
four to seven Sports. Of course, to Marcus Spears as
always hold everything down on the ones and twoes. It
(50:34):
does feel Marcus a little bit little house party vibes right,
like you know, left us the crib might throw a
little party here.
Speaker 5 (50:40):
Yeah, let's sneak a few friends over, have a little fun,
have a little get together.
Speaker 3 (50:47):
Marcus, which was your favorite house party you talking to movie?
Speaker 5 (50:51):
Yes, yes, I'm gonna have to go with the original
of the first movie. That was my favorite, especially the
dance scenes.
Speaker 3 (51:01):
Yeah, I know. And this may catch me some flak,
you know, Harje may hear this, Mark, may hear this
on Monday, she can play it for him. May catch
me some flak. I've seen all of them because my
older brother and cousins, you know, huge house party fans.
But the last one not not the lebron one, not
(51:21):
the lebron one. Lebron one I didn't watch, but there
was one you may not remember. This market was House
Party four down to the minute with iMX with Fa
Marion and see Marcus, I do Marcus. For those of
you watch it on YouTube AM thirteen hundred to zo YouTube,
you saw marks. For those of you listening, I'll have
to describe it. Marcus just kind of put his head down.
(51:43):
I don't know. I don't know if that's an ashamed
feeling or what were what were you feeling at Marcus?
Speaker 5 (51:49):
It was shocking, but then it's it also is showing
your age and also my age. The fact that it's like, oh, yeah,
they did create that movie, and he.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
Would love it because that fits right in his time frame.
It was that movie came out in two thousand memories
Sharves me. Correct, So that's right when I'm like ten to.
Speaker 5 (52:10):
Eleven, you know, and yeah, immature was was you know,
and I am X iMX was was. Yeah, that's my time.
They've changed from immature to I am X. You're right
about that. Matter of fact, I had that album, not that.
Speaker 3 (52:26):
I think of it, see see see, because I'm sure
I like the music, but it was like, come on,
house Part, House Party. I would have let you go
with House Party three. Okay, I know, like I said,
I'm sure Marcus, you will clip this and you will
play it for Arch and Mark and I'm sure I
(52:47):
will get roasted for it. But back to Texas football.
Want to kind of continue the conversation from last segment.
Of course, we have not talked about Arch Manning and
one of the more underrated things about Arch Manning and
whatever level, whatever modicum of success you will have this year.
And maybe I shouldn't say underrated, underreported, but it just
(53:08):
feels like all the talk is Arches, the Heisman favorite
and he's the savior. Those boys up front going to
play a big factor in whatever level of success Arch
Manning has this year. And Arch's blindside will be protected
by Trevor Gooseby. Texas fans got a little bit of
a glimpse of last year when he filled in for
(53:28):
Cam Williams, filled in for Covin Banks, when both those
guys went down with injury and there had to be
some shuffling on the offensive line. Definitely got a chance.
And listen, that's not normal. I know I said this yesterday,
but it's not normal to have your first real experience
come against a Shamar Stewart Michel Williams. Right, So you
don't want to say that that set the bar because
(53:51):
there may be you know, peaks and you know dips
and things of that nature. But overall, I think Gooseby
is going to be maybe maybe not, you know, a
all conference guy immediately Marcus, but I think he's gonna
do an excellent job protecting Arch Manning. And here is
Trevor Goosby talking about the responsibility of protecting Arch man Eat.
(54:17):
I mean, you know, I gotta protect my guy.
Speaker 7 (54:19):
You know, he is a you know, I would say
He's one of my one of the prize possessions of
our team especially, so you know, as an old line
as a whole, we all got to protect him. We
got to protect our running backs and you know what,
and we essentially got to protect our receivers. If we
protect our quarterback quarterback and get to the receivers and
boom explusive plays.
Speaker 8 (54:36):
So you think the offense mine have different straits this
year than last year.
Speaker 3 (54:41):
I think.
Speaker 7 (54:41):
So we're just a whole new old line. I feel
like we just you know, we have a new identity.
You know, four starters are gone, so you know, we
have to really really come together and find out our
identity and.
Speaker 3 (54:49):
Who we are as an our line. So I think.
So you heard Trevor Goosby saying got to protect the
prize possession. And there's no doubt that the prize session
of the twenty twenty five Texas Longhorns is arch manning
for all the talk I've laid out there about the
defense and Anthony Hill Junior and Colin Simmons, and we'll
(55:11):
come to Colin to the second and gonna play another
piece of sound from Trevor here in a second. But
for all of the things that this defense can do, Marcus,
and I firmly believe that this defense can be the
level of Georgia over the past few years. And no
one's gonna confuse Stetson Bennett with some you know, all
world quarterback, right. So sure, maybe in a worst case scenario,
(55:36):
if Arch Manning were to miss time and you had
to go to a backup or had to go through
a third stringer, I'm sure this defense could get you
through for a few games, maybe get you through even
a big time game like a SEC title game or
a collegetball playoff game. You don't want to tempt faith.
You don't want to put that to the test, Marcus.
You want arch Manning to be available for as many
(55:57):
games as possible, especially considering the fact that in Steve
Sarkasan's tenure, Texas football has had to go to a
backup in every single game. Market So, just what goes
through your mind when you hear him take on that responsibility, said, Hey,
I got to protect the prize possession of this team.
Speaker 5 (56:15):
And yeah, that that is the most important thing, is
to protect your quarterback, and and everything falls in place
if you protect Arch can make plays, if receivers can
make play, the running game gets going, everything falls in place.
I always say, if you got to have those bodyguards
(56:35):
up front to protect your quarterback and to create for
your running game.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
One of the things we talked about yesterday was that
battle of right tackle right with Andre Kojo and Brandon
Baker and Steve Starkesian not coincidentally kind of saying that, Hey,
we want to shape these guys that have them face
Colin Simmons, by facing Ethan Burke, by facing Anthony Hill Junior.
(57:02):
I want you to hear Trevor Gooseby talk about just
Colin Simmons and what it's like to go up against
him in practice, and just the fact that, listen, guys,
like the best way for this Texas football team, especially
the offensive line, is Trevor talked about trying to carve
out their own identity. For new starters, they're going to
(57:23):
face a front four or front seven that quite frankly,
may be better than any other front four or front
seven they may face during the season. So let's here
Trevor Gooseby talking about facing Colin Simmons. Man. Colin's are real,
He's a real problem. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (57:38):
I feel like every time I go out, I'm guarding
him in basketball, and it's tough.
Speaker 3 (57:42):
He's just a super super athletic person. Just you know,
he can rust the quarterback for sure. How's he's been developed,
He's really developed a lot.
Speaker 7 (57:49):
You know, he's really put a lot of moves in
his bag, and you know he's going to be a
really really good player for us.
Speaker 3 (57:53):
So and it's also interesting, real quick just to hear
Trevor talk about, you know, where it's competing against Colin
Simmons on the football field or basketball, because listen, you
know the Goosebies have a basketball background. Of course, Austin
Gooseby a prominent recruit that Sean Miller who was out
at Texas football practice Marcus. Maybe Sean Miller was wanting
(58:15):
to talk to Trevor Gooseby saying, hey, you want to
drop that note for your brother, come play for me,
because they certainly are in need of talent on the hardwood,
young talent. But it's interesting to hear Trevor say that
because that is a team that's that's a family that
has a basketball background. But to hear Colin, to hear
Trevor talk about, Hey, Colin competes and everything, right, that
(58:36):
also just it strikes a cord with me, Marcus.
Speaker 5 (58:39):
Well, you know what also strikes the court is the
fact that that practice he's facing Gooseby's facing Colins on
a on a daily basis, and if this offensive line
is being challenged by that defense, you know, by that
defense front, seven sec games may seem easy compared to
(59:03):
what's going on in practice, especially if they're going for
full you know force.
Speaker 3 (59:08):
That's that's the point right there. Like when you look
at this schedule, of course, you're gonna have the Ohio
States of the world, gonna have the Georgias of the world.
You're gonna have you know, Texas, A and M right,
you know, they're gonna want payback. You're gonna you're gonna
have Arkansas. You know, teams like that, who whether if
it's a traditional rivalry or just share talent on the field,
they're looking to bring it to you. But Mississippi State Vandy, Kentucky,
(59:33):
no disrespect of those programs, there's nothing that those teams
can pose that Texas football hasn't seen in practice. In
my mind, Marcus, that aspect is huge, and especially just
real quick, one last thing before we go to break
with some of the things the offensive line has faced
over the past few years, they should have the confidence
(59:54):
in themselves that they can face anything. Right, you can't
throw different stunts, different looks. You're gonna see it in practice,
being molded and reared by arguably one of the best
front fours in front sevens in college football. We'll be
back in a moment, of course. Got to get to
the World's Strongest take from the world's strongest man. It's
(01:00:15):
coming up next. We'ren a kickoff AM thirteen hundred zone.
It is the morning kickoff here on AM thirteen hundred
zone often sports radio and Mark. Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (01:00:29):
Eric?
Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
Do you know what time it is? Tell me what
time it is. Mark, It's time for.
Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
The world's Strongest take by the world's strongest man. Back
then they didn't know me. Now I'm hot, Marcus, stay
all on me. Today's take is about the Hall of
Fame game last night, guys.
Speaker 3 (01:00:55):
Trey Lance is the topic. Ray Lance looked.
Speaker 2 (01:01:01):
Comfortable for the first time in his NFL quarterback life.
He got drafted third overall by the San Francisco forty
nine ers and.
Speaker 3 (01:01:12):
Thrust into playing in a.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
System that did not fit in He was a sprint option,
outside rollout quarterback that played under center in high school
and in college. And he get to San Francisco and
they had Colin Kaepernick. They tried to put him in
(01:01:37):
a pistol. They tried to have him be more of
a runner than He's an athletic guy. He's a big
and physically imposing guy, six y five, two hundred and
twenty pounds, but he's not Cam Newton, He's not Colin Kaepernick.
Speaker 3 (01:01:56):
He is not a running quarterback. He got to be
under center. The Boys.
Speaker 2 (01:02:03):
Gave up a paid a fourth round pick to San
Francisco to get Trey Lance, and they brought him in
and instantly they put him as the backup in a
competition where he was doing stuff that he wasn't used
to doing, you know, like he wasn't a shotgun guy.
(01:02:24):
He was an under center guy. And for him to
be able to get the quarterback guru that he got
and coach Harball, it changed a.
Speaker 3 (01:02:37):
Lot of things. You saw him operate under center so comfortably.
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
Three step drops, five step drop, seven step drop, conventional
normal quarterback play. That's where he excels the most. I've
never seen him more comfortable. I mean, at one point.
Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
He was five of five.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
And when you get in a rhythm as a quarterback
and you can you can drop back comfortably and know
that the ball is coming out of your hand and
it's going to this kind.
Speaker 3 (01:03:13):
Of from the.
Speaker 2 (01:03:17):
West Coast style of quarterbacking, it benefited him a lot.
I'm telling you, I don't I think that the trajectory
for Trey Lance now.
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
Is that he will be a top tier quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
And when I see his abilities, it reminds me more
of Baker Mayfield. Come underneath the center, know where the
ball is going, and if you have a problem, roll
out to your right or your left, and you always
have that hot route. Marcus, you got some sound play that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:54):
Sound for me? Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:03:55):
This is from a Grand Cone of Sports illustrator.
Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
The forty nine Ers messed up.
Speaker 8 (01:04:04):
Trey Lance had his Chargers' debut Tonite in preseason, and
he looked great. Thirteen to twenty fo one hundred and
twenty yards, two touchdowns in a quarterback rating of one fourteen.
Where was this when he was on the forty nine Ers.
I mean he threw passes with touch down the field.
What did he ever throw with touch on the forty
nine ers. He completed passes over the middle with three
(01:04:26):
defenders around the receiver. When did he ever do that
on the forty nine ers. And on top of that,
he looked confident, he looked happy, he was smiling. When
did he ever smile on the forty nine ers. He
looked depressed on the forty nine ers because they tried
to turn him into something he's not and they were
never fully invested in him. They tried to turn him
into Colin Kaepernick, which is strange because they didn't want
(01:04:48):
Colin Kaepernick when they could have had him talking about
Kyle Shanahan.
Speaker 3 (01:04:51):
They put him in the pistol, they had him running
the zone read, they broke his leg. He's not that fast.
Speaker 8 (01:04:58):
You saw how Jim Harbaugh used under center play action,
rolling left, rolling right, throwing on the run. That's what
he's good at. It's what he did in college. It's
what he wants to do. And you can see how
happy he looks for the first time in his professional career.
The Niners gave this guy away for a fourth round pick.
I'm not saying that he's better than Brock Purty or
(01:05:19):
that he should be starting for the forty nine ers.
But they could have had him. They did have him,
they didn't know what to do with him. They almost
ruined his career, and now Jim Harbaugh is just giving
him confidence.
Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
Wow, Eric, that's what I was saying exactly, almost verbatim.
Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
What say you, Mark? You know, it's real interesting that
you chose this for your world's strongest take, because that's
actually something I'm really passionate about too. That being and
I'm curious your take on this, Mark, I firmly believe,
and maybe this comes from my college football background covering
college football, but I firmly believe more NFL teams mess
(01:06:01):
up quarterbacks than develop quarterbacks. Yep. And that guy is
twenty five years old. He's not old.
Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
It's not like he's thirty one, and he's just now
starting to get it. San Francisco drafted him probably three
years too early, just to be honest. I mean, you know,
he was at North Dakota State, like an unbelievable program,
(01:06:31):
but he was twenty years old, nineteen years old.
Speaker 3 (01:06:35):
Like, where do you bring a kid.
Speaker 2 (01:06:38):
Into a locker room full of grown men and just
think that he's gonna materialize. It's hard to do. And
then he goes to the Dallas Cowboys and the pressure
of oh, we want you to be Dak Prescott's air.
A parent, you can't put that kind of pressure on
a twenty one year old kid.
Speaker 3 (01:07:00):
Win in two year old kid. You gotta develop them.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
And where's the quarterback guru that was on Dallas staff.
Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
I'll wait, Yeah, Mike McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (01:07:13):
Mike McCarthy, he's got He's the luckiest quarterback coach in
the history of quarterback coach.
Speaker 3 (01:07:19):
He went from.
Speaker 2 (01:07:19):
Brent Farr to Aaron Rodgers to Dak Prescott.
Speaker 3 (01:07:23):
Get out of here.
Speaker 2 (01:07:25):
So when you already have unbelievable quarterback plays, easy to say,
oh yeah, he's a good quarterback coach.
Speaker 3 (01:07:34):
He didn't do it.
Speaker 2 (01:07:35):
He didn't do a good job developing Trey Lance. And
now last night it's a small stamp besides yes, one
preseason game, but he looked like Superman.
Speaker 3 (01:07:49):
Yeah, this is just add a quick final thought for me.
Like I said, you don't have to be touched on it.
You don't have to rush every quarterback out there year
one game one of their career. Some guys are different,
some guys need time to develop. But that was an
excellent World's Strongest take from the world's strongest Man himself,
(01:08:09):
Mark Henry. We'll be back Morning Kickoff AM thirteen hundred design.
It is the morning kickoff. That music means only one thing.
It's partably my favorite segment of the show, Marcus, because
not just because it's the end of the show, not
that I'll enjoy doing the show, but it's just good vibs. Man,
(01:08:30):
It's just it's the right note, the right tone to
send you out into your day. Marcus.
Speaker 5 (01:08:37):
Definitely, definitely, I feel like I'm I'm I'm about to
go get it started in a good thirty minutes from now,
no doubt about that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
Cut a rug, cut, a little rug, a little rug.
I want to kickoff AM thirteen hundred Zone Hardball harde
the last day of his well deserved vacation, World Strongest Man,
Mark Henry. As we mentioned, the man is always getting
to the money. He is up in the great state
of New Jersey handling business. Summer slam up there. So
(01:09:08):
Eric Henry of Horns twenty four seven, twenty four to
seven sports flying solo here in this eight A and
our appreciate Mark, Marcus cam give me the opportunity. Marcus
appreciates you for holding everything down, give me the opportunity
(01:09:29):
sitting with y'all all week. It has been a lovely week. Marks,
appreciate you many. Definitely a great time. It's been fun.
Can't wait to do it again. Yeah, no doubt no,
Just close up the Show're gonna stay on the Texas
Football Talk. I'm just gonna kind of empty the notebook here.
As far as notes that we picked up from yesterday's availability,
I know it had some people a little bit worried
(01:09:52):
when they heard or saw, whether you heard it on
AM thirte hundred Zone or you saw it on the interwebs,
that right guard DJ Campbell and receiver Ryan Wingo were
not at practice here today. Both of them are fine
sources of confirmed to us. It just was a personal
matter that both of them were tending to, so do
not read too much into that. But Parker Livingstone Marcus
(01:10:15):
Enough talked about him, you know, several times this week,
and the kid just looks like he's going to be
a player out there.
Speaker 1 (01:10:20):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:10:20):
This is Mark talked about this Longhorned football team being
two and three deep at several positions, and I think
this is an example of it. You know, I talked
about this over on our flagship podcast at twenty four
to seven Sports that I do with Chip Brown. If
you have a chance to check it out, you know,
by all means go ahead. But this receiver room, Marcus.
(01:10:41):
You know, a couple of years ago when it was
John T. Cook and Ryan Niblett and DeAndre Moore, it
was like, why aren't these guys getting on the field.
And one of the things we heard from Steve Sarkisian was, well,
the veteran guys a d Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, Jordan Winnington,
those guys have just earned my trust, you know. And
this feels in a way like it and earned my trust.
Type of year for the college Lockets, the Jamie Frenches,
(01:11:05):
the Dalen mccutcheons of the world, Aaron Butler's of the world. Well,
Parker Livingstone's guy, I think is really making that push.
Yesterday he had a couple of really nice grabs. You know,
was getting strong praise from Sarkesian and Chris Jackson for
his route running, saying that you know, hey, that that
catch would have been good even in the NFL, saying
that you know you got two feet down when you're
(01:11:25):
right there on the boundary. Of course, Will need one
in college. But he's a guy who I genuinely think
is making his push. DeAndre Moore Junior are gonna head
up that room. Of course, Ryan Wingo when he returns,
certainly gonna be the you know, quote unquote wide receiver one.
And Emmett Mosley the fifth come in from Stanford. But
I really think Parker Livingstone if you aren't keep an
(01:11:47):
eye eye on him, if you don't know that name,
you need to know that name. QB two. That battle
Marcus still stretching, It will still stretch on into the
second week and third week the fall camp. It's been
an up and down thing, you know, And I think
that's been the thing. Steve Sarkisian, we talks about this team,
especially quarterback, just looking for consistency. Trey Owens has all
(01:12:09):
of the physical ability. It's just a matter of being
consistent with certain passes. So at least during our media
viewing window, we don't know what happens. We're not there, right,
but during our window, Trey one moment, all the town
in the world next moment, just gotta get a little
bit more consistency out of him, So you keep an
eye between him and Matthew Caldwell with that push for
(01:12:30):
QB two. We've talked about the running backs a ton,
so certainly no need to re emphasize that. But guys
like Michael Terry, you know, even talk about the wide
receiver room. Michael Terry earning a little praise for his
ability to track the football special teams going to be
a factor, no doubt, keeping eye DeAndre Moore, Ryan Niblett,
(01:12:50):
and Dalen McCutcheon in the punt return game, Marcus, so
definitely a ton to keep an eye on there. And
the last name I will give you there. I just
wrote this story yesterday. What's up on the site right now?
Colebrivard Marcus? And I know, you know, Bo Davis really
endared himself to Texas football fans with that strong, impassioned
(01:13:11):
rant that of course was meant to be private, but
it made its way of public someone's recording on the
bus after the Iowa State loss. You know, that really
endeared him to Texas football fans, a very pivotal moment
in changing the culture. Right, Guys who were may have
been okay with five and seven, may have been okay
with losing to Iowa State. No, that changed. But Kenny
(01:13:33):
Baker is a guy who I really hope Texas football
fans get to hear more of because a he's just
a fiery guy and not firing necessarily in the same
way Bo Davis is, but maybe impassioned, you know, passionate,
it's a better word to use. You hear him talk
about his room, his guys, you can tell he pours
everything he has into them. Marcus, he cares, and most notably,
(01:13:55):
he has a track record of success. You take a
look at last year, molding Alfred Collins, molding Vernon Broughton,
giving them some tools to help them become NFL draft picks.
Doing that right now with Cold Brevard. Hearing him talk
about Cold Brevard was only a nose tackle at Purdue, right,
and he came to Texas and was like, all right,
this is what I do. I'm six three, three fifty.
(01:14:15):
I stuffed to run. And Kenny Baker saying, no, we
want to challenge you to do more, push you to
do more. Line up different techniques, you know, a two
I technique, a four eye technique, which for those of
you you know, maybe not the most football well verse,
it's just you know, if you're a nose guard right,
you're in that zero technique, you're lining up directly over
the center. The different techniques, you know, a two I
or four eye just depends on your lining up on
(01:14:36):
the inside shoulder, maybe that guard or that tackle. Putting
more tools in his toolbox allowing him to do different things,
versatility giving these guys the confidence, Marcus, to do different things.
That to me is something you should really keep it
on with, not just cold Brevard, but all of these
defensive tackles. Marcus and you know, you and I. As
we get ready to close the show, we talk off
(01:14:57):
here and we say whether or a football player or
you just in everyday life. The more tools in your toolbox,
the more versatile who are can only help you?
Speaker 5 (01:15:07):
Yeah, it's definitely the more things you can do the
more That's how you get on the field and football
in life in general, any job you have. That's how
you get to show what you can do. Is you
show you can do multiple things, you become more valuable
in any faceted life.
Speaker 3 (01:15:25):
It's just the way it is. And that's what you're
seeing from the Texas football team. Brad Spence making the
move full time to edge right. Steve Sarkijen talking about
need a little more death that they wanted edge. You
get that tray more him making the move the linebacker.
You get versatility there. Even in Texas's based defense. You know,
(01:15:47):
it's not even really Anthony Hill as a mic and
Leunglafow is kind of a weak side or strong side.
That's not how it operates. It really is just kind
of depending upon the alignment and where these guys line up.
So just seeing the versatility, seeing the confidence that this
coaching staff has in this team to cross trained guys.
Michael Taff working at Star, Jalen Gilbert kicking outside, it's
(01:16:08):
it's it's really a fascinating thing to watch, and you
are seeing the foundation of it laid here in the
first week of camp. Week number two coming up next week.
The guys that click clack is Mark likes to talk
about it's coming soon enough. They'll put the pads on
under that Texas heat. Hopefully it'd be a little bit cooler.
(01:16:29):
Maybe li'le practice in the morning. You don't take a
little bit of stress off the guys. But folks, Texas
football is indeed coming, as long as they hydrate themselves,
all right, Gotta hydrate. Hey, hey, there's plenty of water.
There's no shortage of water and gator right out there
on the forty acres they have that for sure. But
(01:16:50):
thank you very much to Hardball hard Mark Henrick for
letting me sit in this week. Hardball Hart would be
back on Monday. World Strongest Man would be back on Monday. Marcus,
thank you, Circle holding everything down. AM thirteen hundred Zone
Morning Kickoff. Have a fantastic Friday, and I'll be back
at my usual slot on Thursdays. Y'all have a great
(01:17:12):
Friday and have a great week end as well.
