Back. We're back in it. And uh, I want to get.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Into the Cowboys game last night because Dallas Cowboys came
in and I said, they're gonna cover. Now, eight and
a half is just ridiculous amount of a line, especially
when you're playing a rivalry game to start the season.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
You got the Super Bowl hangover.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
You got everything that's happening for Philadelphia. But the game
starts off kind of wild and well, let's just hear
from Mike Tarrico.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Defensive lineman, and Dak spits down sport the ground, but
in the direction of the Eagles with Carter who had
walked over there, and that begins the interaction of the
two Prescott spit.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Was down Carter, Carter spit was at his chest and
on his chair like right in the The captain said, hey, listen, man,
that's two things that you don't do to another man. Exactly.
You don't slap. You can punch me, but don't slap, but.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Don't slap me.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
It's world famous. All wrestlers know. Don't chop Mark Henry Unliss.
He gives you the gives you the green light to
do it. And it's about three people that had the
green light. That's it, right, right, And you never ever
spit on the man.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
You don't on anybody.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
You don't spit on anybody, somebody that want to fight.
You definitely don't do that. The one that's built for that,
you know what I'm saying that guy it like listen, man,
don't do it.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
And here's the thing for me too, like in this situation,
you don't, you don't do that. And then that is
over there smiling at him like antagonizing him, like, oh man,
I got you.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
I'm gonna get fifteen yards. And I was like, no, bro,
you need to go get some anon simptik.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
They need to they to hug me.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Well, the Cowboys come up short twenty four to twenty eight,
I mean twenty four to twenty in a great matchup that.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Was delayed by weather.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
And at the start of the game it looked like
the Cowboys were just gonna drive down the field. They
were running the ball right where Jalen Carter was not anymore.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
He started attacking it.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Javonte Williams a good pickup for the Cowboys so far.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
We'll see what ends up happening. Miles Sanders looked good
for a brief second, then he gave but then he
gave the ball right back to him, so that was
part of it.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
But Dak and CD looked like they were getting things
cooking early.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Shift before the first step of the game. Prescott play action,
bout you get hit thing it it's open for CD one.
It's to five first.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
And goes Dallas and Dallas continued to roove the ball,
a lot of movement in the in the on the
offensive side of the ball, whether they were running it,
they were mixing it up.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
There were so many different.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Things that was happening during that second part of the
ball game. Well then all of a sudden, CD lamb
looked like he ain't played football before.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
Oh and it hits CD raising that hands. That's too.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
That's too in the.

Speaker 6 (05:32):
Second half that he has not been able to hold onto.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Wow yeah, wow, wow wow. Mark.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
We talk about the numbers, right, you look at Dak's numbers,
and some people will say, and we'll get into a
conversation here in a minute.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah, yeah, I'm one of them.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
You're not all, you're some and uh, we'll talk about
Dak and his number and how he didn't look Those
are two big that's two big plays that he dropped
that could have changed the ball game, the whole complexity.
But the fourth down one was just a little bit
too much for me.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
And Prescott's loft again.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
In half, third time, in the half times in the
games man, and then you start to look at it
and you say, Okay, that did everything he was supposed
to do with that football, with that football, and he
continued to throw the ball to his guy.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
His guy is CD Lamb.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
There's no other person that he feels more trusted with
than CD Lamb, and CD let him down in that instant.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
I told Marcus when I walked in here today.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I said that play fourth down in three, big time,
over the top, perfectly dropped into the basket.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
He drops the ball.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
It reminds me of the Danz Bryant played down the
sideline Tony Romo.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Same thing eighty eight.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
He catches it and they say, incomplete, incomplete.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
This one was just a straight up drop.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
But the folks at the fan your favorite spot up there,
Calvin broad Calvin Broadness, I did it again, Brian Broadess
of Calvin broddiss snoop, he would have been able to
do it like he wanted to. Baby, But this is
what he had to say about CD because CD and
his family, remember, were very critical of Dak Prescott last

(07:36):
year about certain things well, No, two years ago because
Dak got hurt.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
They were very critical of Dak.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Now he's throwing the ball to your guy and your
guys dropping the ball.

Speaker 7 (07:47):
It's unfortunate because you're going to your best player to
make those plays, you know. And he had three drops
in that game. We talked about the seven other catches
that he had for over one hundred yards. Good for him,
but it's those passes in those critical down in distances
that you have to come up with. The last one

(08:08):
he had on the fourth down. I love the play call.
It's a switch with a pick and I loved it,
and you know, unfortunately they didn't. They didn't come up
with it. They didn't come up with a play earlier
down the middle of the field. It was right in
his hands of another well thrown ball. And then early
in the game he had a first down, they had
a chance on third down on the third long to

(08:28):
convert and he dropped that one as well.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
Hmm.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
I like to have some kind of defense for a CD.
Oh my god, man, mikeae Irvan feels just like men.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
We feel Listen. I'm with you, Mike, right, both mics,
both mikes like that.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
That's uh is, you can't do that right, Like when
you're the star, you know you're the third rob receiver,
we almost.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Expect you to drop one or two. Well, I'll be
mad at Dak for you, right, I'll be like, why
are you throwing him? Especially in that type of situation.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
To war but not c like you have to make
that catch and they're they're putting all the eggs in
one bag. I guarantee you that Piggins was over there like,
hey man, give me a shot. He will and he's
gonna get his opportunities. But a lot of that hard
just because regardless of practice time, it's not the same

(09:39):
as game time. The Cowboys would go out there in
the preseason. These last three weeks, Ceedee, Lamb and Dack
didn't even play together in the games. You gotta have continuity,
you gotta have like reps together in game situation under
the lights, CD was targeted thirteen times last night. George

(10:04):
Pickens was targeted four times, and and two of the
passes that George Pickens got were at waste level. George
Pickens is known for what he was known for, high
pointing people, moss and people. Dak doesn't have enough continuity
with that guy. If anybody should have got thirteen, it

(10:26):
should have been Pickins. You gotta find a relationship with
that guy. He don't have one. But that's part of
not playing in preseason. That's exactly that Joe Burrow the
last three years. Joe Burrow said it himself. He's like, man,
I have to get a better start this year. He said,

(10:48):
I'm playing in the preseason games because I want us
to hit the ground running. By the way, Jessica's you
know what I'm I'm not saying that you're gonna win that,
but I wouldn't put it out of the ram of
possibility because of his focus. And when you hear him speak,

(11:09):
he's talking like, hey, now's the time. Yeah, and I
don't think that Dak is there right now. Well, there
were some drops that could have three weeks might change
my mind.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
We'll go see what ends up happening. But I thought,
I don't trade it. Yeah, I was trying to say,
any already off your team.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
When week Texas will be taking on San Jose State
tomorrow eleven am. We got a chance to hear from
coach Sark, and you can hear all of that right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome
back to the Home of Texas Football. You can catch
all the action tomorrow morning right here on the Home

(11:49):
of Texas Football on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
You can listen to Third and Longhorn as they do
their pregame show an hour before we start hours live
on campus tomorrow starting at eight a m. We'll be
off of Bevo Boulevards to come and hang out with
us as we will be getting you ready for this

(12:11):
matchup between Texas and San Jose State University.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Big time matchup for Texas. Good rebound, rebound, get right
game as well. Right, we try to get that popping
right away. But I want you to hear from coach
Shark because he had his final media availability and gives
us the opening statement as they get ready for this
big matchup.

Speaker 8 (12:35):
Alrighty forty eight hours from kickoff here at DKR, and
we're fired up about that. You know, will work really
hard all year for very few opportunities to play at home,
and so we want to maximize this opportunity. We're looking
forward to being with our fans, to being with our students.
We want to make sure that we're putting a product

(12:56):
on the field that they're proud of and the way
that we play the game of football. Uh, I know,
we're looking forward to a Rockets student section and in
a great environment at dk R Saturday.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
So should should be a fun day for college football.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
And the conversation kind of transferred real quick because, in
case you don't know, Wardale mac defensive back got in
a little bit of trouble during right after Texas got
back over the weekend, and the news came out that
he was suspended, suspended suspicious of driving while intoxicated, and

(13:31):
coach Shark gave us an update on that situation.

Speaker 8 (13:35):
You know, Wardell, obviously we're aware of the situation that occurred.
We're obviously monitoring the authorities and where they stand on it,
and then anything that happens beyond that will handle internally,
so that that that's that.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
So he's like, Hey, anything that goes down over here,
were handling in here.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Just because you're you're a longhorn, don't exempt you from
my thoughts on drunk driving or driving under the influence
or impaired. I had a buddy of mine, Hugh Morris,
the wrestler, lost his fourteen year old daughter to a
drunk driving accident, and like, you just cannot do that.

(14:24):
Uber livet you got a teammate that don't drink, like
have their number in your phone. There's got to be
something like this driving under the influence. It aggravates me
to a level of okay, like you know, you know
how quick I am to trade you. I don't want
to give up on the kid, but you need to know, like,

(14:45):
hey man, you got to be more responsible.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
Well let's pump the brakes on that.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
I do understand exactly where you're going, but we don't
know what he was under the influence of.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
It may not have been alcohol, okay, just.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Like with the previous situation with Brooks, it wasn't that
he was under the influence of alcohol.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
It was under the influence of something else.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Either way, you're correct, there's no there's there's no place
for it. If it's not gravy, then listen. Usually if
I get pulled up for swerving, it's because I.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Drunk. Yeah, you're a food coming.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Yeah, Like, hey man, look, you need to go home
and sleep that off. But I'm making jokes about it,
but I'm telling it because of me and my gluttony.
But I'm just saying like that, it's just no place
for it. Man, like go to sleep, man, it called somebody.

Speaker 9 (15:47):
It gets crazy because then when you chunking things like medication,
and if you're not used to a certain medication, you
don't know.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
Okay, I've been waiting for I've been There's other parts
of this that we don't know. So we're not going
to try to really beat that down. But yes, I
agree with you. And Coach Shark said that they're going
to handle it in the house. And I know that
from previous situation that Coach Shark has dealt with off

(16:14):
the field issues because of his past and what he's
gone through.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
He's more.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Exactly so he and he always he tells the team
every year about his failures in life. And I appreciate
that I too, from being yeah, being so honest with
his team and open with them, because if they can't
trust you, then you don't have them anyway.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
So they want to make.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Sure that they have a relationship and trust each other.
But the other part of it is we got to
know who you're about to play. Well, let me back
that up. There was a question that was asked about
the tackling that was happening in the opener, because if
you go back and look at that, if you were
if you caught the ball and you were on Ohio State,
you didn't.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Get very far.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
No, And if you came up and you got around Courn,
you didn't get very far. They were on the football.
There wasn't a lot of mistackles. And so coach Sark
was asked about the tackling in the opener.

Speaker 8 (17:11):
Yeah, I would say the two things for me coming
out of the game in general for us as a team,
that you know, you're always trying to find areas for
where you can improve, but then you're always trying to
find bright spots in a ballgame. And the first was
our ability to take care of the ball on offense.
The ball was never on the ground. I know we
threw the one interception, but I thought our ball security

(17:33):
on offense was tremendous. That's always a concern going into
week one. And then the other concern in week one
is your ability to tackle. And I thought we tackled
really well. I thought we had really good leverage on
the ball. I thought we wrapped well. I thought we
played with really good effort, which didn't put us in
a lot of one on one tackle situations, you know,
where we had multiple white hats around the ball to

(17:55):
get people on the ground. And that's going to be
important in this game because then to shoot, you know,
create space, and half of that offense is get the completion,
make the first guy miss in the open field.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
And so owning our leverage.

Speaker 8 (18:10):
Rapping when we tackled, not just trying to knock people
to the ground, but wrapping up and then the second
man in coming in attacking the football I think is
going to be big as we continue to move forward.
But again, a ton of praise for our ability to
get a lot of good football players on the ground
last Saturday.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
And that is going to be important.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
And you heard what he said about the run and
shoot offense and how you spread everybody out, so it's
important to get people down. So coach Sark was asked,
what do you expect from the San Jose offense?

Speaker 8 (18:40):
Yeah, you know, I think it's a credit to Ken
you know, he you know, obviously at the academy and
the option game and the success that he had at
Navy for so many years was just tremendous. And he's
he's a good friend that way of just getting to
know one another over the years, and then you know
they decided to go in a different direction. He goes
on to San Jose State, and for him to make

(19:03):
the change philosophically, to go from the option game to
the run and shoot game, I think speaks a lot
to his trust and his coaches. The one thing that
holds true is their style of play, and it is fast,
and it is physical, and that starts on the defensive
side of the ball. It carries over into special teams.
And I know you think you know run and shoot.

(19:25):
They're throwing it. They're throwing it. They are, but man,
they're they're physical and they're nasty upfront. The run and
shoot is a very difficult offense to defend. And coach Stutsman,
who played in it in Hawaii under June Jones, He's
got a he got a wealth of knowledge in it,
so different different tasks that way, We're still got to
stop the run, but man, you better be on your stuff.

(19:46):
Coverage wise, you better be on your stuff and your
pass rushes. You let them stand back there and throw
the ball. That can make for a long day. They're
gonna throw the ball forty five to fifty times mark.
They were the second They had the second most of
the timp passing last year.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
You're in college football.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
This is a team that understands who they are to
be able, as he said, to adapt to a new
style of offense and being aggressive and being able to
stretch the field get the ball out of your hand.
So tackling is going to be very important for the
University of Texas and making sure that they get guys
down on the ground after they make the catch.

Speaker 2 (20:22):
But one of the things today is Friday.

Speaker 3 (20:24):
So on Fridays, the team always writes notes to each other,
holding each other accountable, telling them what they think all
this other stuff.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
So coach Sark was asked about that.

Speaker 8 (20:37):
Yeah, you know, I think you know, culture to me
is the you know, outside of acquiring talented people as
coaches and players, is our culture. And you know, it's
one thing to bring really good people into your organization.
It's another to make sure that they're really well connected
and that we're all on the same accord. And to

(20:57):
do that, you need to be vulnerable, You need to
be honest, you need to be transparent, and so I
try to you know, I don't try to be the
guy that does a culture exercise, you know, a couple
of times in the summer, and then you forget about
it in season, And so we try to do a
weekly culture exercise that keeps us connected, where guys can
share thoughts and feelings and where where their teammates can

(21:19):
hold them accountable to and just different different activities because
I do think you know, culture wins. You know, I've
always said this culture beats talent. Culture and talent together
is really deadly. And I think we've created that, and
I just want to make sure that we don't just
maintain it, that we continue to help that thing grow
and manifest itself into into something that's uniquely special.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
Wow. Yeah, when you when you get your team.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
In alignment like that's we were talking about continuity. Alignment
I think is a little bit different, and I think
coach sark Is.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Is more won't alignment than continuity.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
Yeah, he's got everybody growing in the right direction, same direction.
That's what you look forward to, and I you know,
we expect some big things.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
You can also hear.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
The game right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
When we come.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Back, we're gonna give out our picks. That's right, hey,
for entertainment value, that's it.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
Don't go by this there you go on be epo. Yeah,
this is hey.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
Use it as you will, but we ain't telling.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
You what to do, but we'll talk about it when
we come back.

Speaker 3 (22:32):

All right, let's get into our picks. Let's ro these,
let's go NFL. I'm gonna roll with the Miami Dolphins
and I'm gonna take them against the Indianapolis Coats. I'm
gonna take the Dolphins plus.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
One and a half? Mark? Who you got in your
ball game?

Speaker 1 (25:16):
I'm gonna go to Kansas City Chiefs uh and the
Chargers uh that I'm going with the Chiefs. I'm not
gonna give a score, nothing like that. I'm gonna just
leave it right there. I ain't gotta win by three
and a half. So you're gonna go with the Chiefs, Marcus,
who you got?

Speaker 9 (25:32):
I'm also gonna go with the Dolphins one and a half.
So I don't know how we got here. Yeah, year,
we didn't talk about this.

Speaker 3 (25:38):
We got to pick our own games. Marcus, who's your
other NFL game?

Speaker 9 (25:43):
I'm going Texans plus three against the.

Speaker 1 (25:46):
Rams, all right, I'm going Ravens and over the Bills.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
One and a half.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
And I am gonna take the Atlanta Falcons plus one
and a half over Tampa Bay Mark. I'm gonna go
Jets over the Steelers, all right, seven.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Jets. He's taking the Jets, going, come.

Speaker 9 (26:10):
On, Marcus Bears one and a half. Uh taking one
and a half versus the Vikers.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
All right.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
I am gonna go Arizona Cardinals minus six and a
half over I don't even know who they playing, but
they beating them now.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
They're beating New Orleans. They beat New Orleans. I'm just
playing Sorry, what was what was the six and a half?
Oh you can triple that?

Speaker 1 (26:37):
Yeah, well, all I need is the touchdown. I don't
think the Saints can beat anybody in their division, all right.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
So that's what we're rolling with right now. Now, we're
gonna go to the college game.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
We're gonna give you three NFL games, and we're gonna
give you three college games.

Speaker 2 (26:55):
And I'll kick this thing off. I am going to.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
Take the Baylor Bears plus two and a half over
SMU number sixteen ran And if you.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
Want to add a little extra to it.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Take the over because it's sixty three and a half.
This is gonna be a shootout. This is gonna be
a shootout. They won't have good weather. Go out there
and sling that thing all over. This game will be
on the c W. By the way, Mark, clear you have.
I'm gonna go to Texas Longhorns. Thirty six points.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Make it thirty seven, thirty seven over the San Jose Shark.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
The art spartans in agreement to Mark, I'm taking Texas.

Speaker 9 (27:40):
I don't know why I'm agreeing with you here, but
minus thirty six and a half I'm taking.

Speaker 2 (27:45):
I'm giving the points. All right, Uh Mark, cle you
have in your second game.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
I'm gonna go oe you Michigan and I'm gonna take
o you Homer. Watch out, man, man, I'm losing friendship.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
Man, he's been stop a Homer Oklahoma minus five and
a half, Marcus, I think you're going the other one.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
Yeah, I'm going to opposite away. I'm taking four and
a half in Michigan. Well, I got him at five
and a half.

Speaker 5 (28:18):
Okay, I got four and a half.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
Okay, all right, I'll take you four and a half. Though,
I'll definitely tell you know what. My other one is
hold on, hold on, let me give you mine.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
I'm taking Michigan as well over to cover against Oklahoma.
I got it at five and a half, so i got.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
A lot of room to work with. So I'm staying
right there.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
And your other game is mark Baylor and s MU,
and you're taking that. I'm taking as Mu. I figured
you were. That offense is deadly, man. I got you,
I got you.

Speaker 2 (28:48):
You was right.

Speaker 1 (28:48):
The one thing you did say that was right about
that game is they are going to score. Both teams
are gonna.

Speaker 3 (28:55):
Because Baylor cannot stop the run at all. Marcus, what's
your third game, Houston minus fourteen versus Rice.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
I see such a homer.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
I see if you ain't gonna say nothing else. I
see I see that. I see that I was just
about to say it. I see how he is rolling.

Speaker 3 (29:12):
So just so you know, here are the picks, and
my third pick is going to be Kentucky plus eight
and a half over Old Miss. Oh Miss is the
twenty and ranked team. That's gonna be a game that
Kentucky playing at home. I'm not sure that Lane Kiffin
is gonna be ready for stoops. I could be wrong.

(29:33):
I could be way off, but Kentucky is a team
that always seems to play tough at home. That is
why Texas is gonna have a tough time there. I'm
gonna post these on my social media at Hardball hard
and you will be able to look at all the picks.
And remember this is just for fun entertainment, in entertainment only.

(29:56):
We are not encouraging you to go out there and
use our picks.

Speaker 2 (30:02):
But if you like them, that's on. You got a
problem here.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
You must be to make sure you get that intelligibility
restrictions very by jurisdiction, but I will make sure that
we post that.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
Coming up next, we want to continue these conversations. The
Texans are at the Rams this weekend and one of
these teams must set the tone. Can't wait to talk
about it right here on the morning kickoff on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Coming up, in the
next segment, we'll have our guy Tommy Yarish of Dallascowboys

(30:40):
dot Com. He will be giving us all the tea
from what happened yesterday and Spitgate and the things that
he saw during the ballgame that kind of changed the
narrative and do we need to start putting more respect
on the Dallas Cowboys name because they went out and
played way better football than everybody thought they were going
to be.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
There were some instances.

Speaker 3 (31:02):
Where we could have looked at Michael Parsons chasing Jalen
Hurts because Jalen Hurts was able to move around pretty
freely when he needed to end up to move drives around.
He was running to get first downs. He wasn't running
for the touchdowns until he got in the red zone.

Speaker 1 (31:22):
And he decided, well, the Cowboys are definitely going to
get better in two weeks once they get Agent zero.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
Then they have somebody that.

Speaker 1 (31:29):
Can absolutely sideline the sideline cut that run into the
pielones out.

Speaker 2 (31:34):
Just put it out your mind. That's what it's all about.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
Because he did that to Casey Thompson here that very
first year and they were like, you're not supposed to
hit our quarterbacks and he was like he tried to
get into the end zone and I was like, he
is going to be a freak.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
I loved it.

Speaker 3 (31:50):
In the spring. You could beat me to the pieline.
That's good for you. You earned that, but you're not
going to get that just freely. I wanted to get
into this conversation because the Texans will be headed to.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
La to take on the Rams.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
We're expecting big things from this Houston Texans team. It's
one of the highest rated defenses. But the one thing
that we continue to talk about is that offensive line.
And Demiko Ryans talked about how this line continues to
prove it.

Speaker 10 (32:19):
So there's been questions all off season about the offensive line.
Everybody wants to know who's going out there, who's this
guy this position.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
It's just a lot of talk and.

Speaker 10 (32:28):
I'm quite frankly, I'm tired of talking about it. Like
it's time to go play and let's see how our
higher five matches up gets a really great defensive line.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
And that's what we'll see on Sunday. Let's see how
it all plays out. And you see coach have to
edit himself.

Speaker 1 (32:46):
And when you get in the play man, when you're
singing tie of being sick and tied, you don't want
to put a microphone in that.

Speaker 3 (32:51):
Man phase because because we all have been talking about
there's been a lot of change on the offensive line.

Speaker 9 (32:57):
Well, it's not just offense, it's the philosophy of the
offense is getting the ball a lot quicker.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
That's what I saw in the preseason.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Well, it was about the offensive line though, protecting, and
you gotta be able to do that.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
Because they just brought in brand new people.

Speaker 3 (33:10):
It's a whole different atmosphere for that offensive line.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
So he's been listening.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
To the show because he did exactly what I said.
He took the ball down a couple of times and
ran it because he's feeling himself. He got that extra
ten pounds of muscle. He better feel himself, but he ran.
He's gonna be on that.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
Track, gotten to that song, slide to the left, You're
gonna have to get down.

Speaker 3 (33:33):
But then also this is expected to be a huge,
huge season for Nico Collins.

Speaker 2 (33:39):
You can see c J.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
Stroud and Nico Collins in the way that they have
been working. Christian Clerk, Christian Kirk is going to be
out of this game, which is disappointing because you went
out there to get him.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
But now you have to look at what Nico Collins
is able to do. Just like, Hey, this guy is
always to me say I got here.

Speaker 11 (34:01):
Yeah, I thought I told him.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
I told him.

Speaker 11 (34:04):
I'll be doing him a Discourtacy if I'd make him
a superstar. It was one of my first conversations.

Speaker 2 (34:09):
I don't know.

Speaker 11 (34:10):
I've always kind of had that mindset since I've been
in like middle school. It's like, I want to make
my receivers look really good and make it easy on them.
For me, that's like anticipation Bacacy, timing, and because a
lot of times guys are opening quarterbacks are just later
and throw bad balls.

Speaker 2 (34:26):
So it's my job to do that. So, I don't know.

Speaker 11 (34:28):
We had that conversation when I first got here, and
I've seen the way he moved, how big he was,
how fast he was, and yeah, he looked like like
somebody like like, I don't want to give y'all worry.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
I'll put it on Twitter or something.

Speaker 9 (34:40):
So alone, Texas editing themselves the boy they got the
edit button down.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Hey, but I'm gonna tell you something.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
This opens the door for Higgins that have a big day.
So if you have Higgins on your fantasy team, you
might want to play him. You might want to put
him in the starting lineup because if Kirk is not playing,
then this is bro This could be easily the best
thing that ever happened for him for for for the Texans,

(35:12):
and well Higgins and Noel, both of those.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Guys are gonna get a chance to play right with Kirk,
especially with Kirk being out.

Speaker 1 (35:19):
And don't forget about Xavier Hutchinson too. Now you say
either our our receiver or a Jalen.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Yeah, so this is going to be a big time
matchup for each of these guys.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
But here's the other part of it.

Speaker 3 (35:34):
I'm a big fan of what the Texans are doing overall,
like the way that they are building their organization, the
way that they are seeing the areas that need to
improve immediately, they are taking the time to make sure
that that happens. So for me, when you start to
look at what they're doing, it is it they are

(35:56):
They are creating the narrative that we have all been
looking for, and that is we're gonna dominate the line
of scrimmage and our defense is going to win the
games for us. So when that happens, it changes the
whole complexion of this football team.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
Okay, yeah, I see it.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
But like the things, opportunity is the thing that I'm
talking about, Like, you know, the scheme, the way they're
building their franchise, all of that that's great because that's
that hangs on the head of the coach.

Speaker 2 (36:28):
But what I'm saying is, when you have a starter,
are you you bring it?

Speaker 1 (36:33):
They paid Kirk a lot of money to come in
and take Dale's place. Now you bring You got two
rookies that are that are gonna be filling those spots
and and this is your opportunity to show, hey, I
belong here. Yeah, and I think that Higgins is one
of those the guy that I feel like is gonna
get the most shigne. So you're looking at Higgins. I'm

(36:55):
looking still at what's going on with our Xavier Hutchinson
because they love him. He's a big, tall, long, lanky
wide receiver. He was somebody when Texas was playing against
Iowa State, he was the matchup problem, right because.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
He was a big guy and can stretch the field.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
So when you got Nico who can take the top off,
you gotta have that guy that can be that intermediate
route guy. And of course, don't forget about the offense
with Dalton Schultz at tight end.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
Man, I forgot about Dalton.

Speaker 3 (37:26):
Don't do that, man, Don't do that because he gonna
come out there. Don't don't do Dalton.

Speaker 1 (37:31):
He hopes, Hey, they're hoping they forget about Dalton because
CJ will find him and they will make some plays.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
And don't forget Nick Chubb on that running game. He's
gonna be back there. Damian Pierce.

Speaker 1 (37:43):
This is a solid football that got a lot of depth.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
But I'm still not picking him to win on Saturday.
I mean on Sunday because I'm rolling with I'm rolling
with Matthew Stafford. By the way, you can listen to
the game right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
that is on the home of the Huge Texans. You
can also listen to the Dallas Cowboys as we now
have the Dallas Cowboys in our iHeart family. The Dallas

(38:08):
Cowboys can be heard on ninety eight point one Cavet
and of course all games that will be played can
be heard all across the iHeartRadio family. That's what we do.
That's why you gotta get that free a man. Oh,
what that's what I do. I said, that's what we see.
See that's that's not France. Yeah, yeah, we made it

(38:36):
across the pond.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
But yeah, so.

Speaker 3 (38:38):
Make sure you tune in all week long as this
is your home for all things Texas Longhorns. But coming
up next, we're gonna talk Dallas Cowboys with our guy
Tommy Yarish of Dallascowboys dot Com.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
I want to get his take and thoughts.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
On where he sees this Dallas Cowboys football team after
game one. There's a lot to discuss right here on
the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to our number two of the morning kickoff
right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone
and hour number one. We got a chance to hear
from coach sar because he prepares for his matchup against

(39:16):
San Jose State.

Speaker 2 (39:18):
That game will kick off at eleven a m.

Speaker 3 (39:20):
Tomorrow, and he gave us an update on Wardell Mack
talked about the tackling and he also told us what
to expect when we see San Jose State's offense. We
also did our picks, so make sure you get over
to AM thirteen hundred The Zone on Twitter. That's where
we have it posted. We'll post it on Facebook as well. Yeah, man,

(39:43):
don't don't don't take them lightly, and don't take them
to the bank, because we are not encouraging you to
go and do that.

Speaker 1 (39:52):
Don't say, hey, I lost my rent. Yeah, because it's
Mike Hard's fault. Why's it got to be Mike harg
I was there too. Listen, you the one asked me, Hey,
we're gonna do this. You told me what we were
gonna do.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
Yeah, y'all.

Speaker 1 (40:08):
Yeah, I'm not thinking no, no Marcus absorbing any of
it is.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
It's not about me. That's about you exactly. See, that's
all about you.

Speaker 3 (40:19):
He told he said, you know, he said about you
and your picks. So go with Mars because he said
hammered the over last night.

Speaker 2 (40:31):
And I'm just gonna let y'all know my pick's been wrong.

Speaker 3 (40:38):
But as you know, we have a lot of fun here,
as you can see. So we wanted to make sure
that we give y'all an opportunity to look at our numbers,
see where we are, and see how we stack up
against some of those uh.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
Professional Yeah, those guys out the.

Speaker 3 (40:53):
Bill buildings, the handicappers, Yeah, the handicappers. We'll go there,
big match up tonight. Kansas City travels to Brazil, Brazil,
then Rio on Sun. Yeah, so that would be over there.
Kansas City a three point favorite. We'll talk about them

(41:13):
a little bit later in the show, but I want
to go back. We were supposed to have timmy yards,
but last night we forgot that. The game was delayed
for an hour and a half. So I'm sure he's
slept in and I don't blame him, because yeah, it
was night last night.

Speaker 1 (41:28):
And listen, man, I don't feel sorry for nobody right now. Hey,
I ain't slept seven hours straight. World travel that's you,
that's the world traveler.

Speaker 2 (41:38):
I don't feel sorry for him.

Speaker 3 (41:39):
Yeah, well, I'm sure he's not worried about you feeling
sorry for him.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Wake up, man, come on, we won't you on the show.

Speaker 3 (41:48):
But as we know that there's some things that go
down last night, the Dallas Cowboys come up short. The
game was marred with the opening part of it where
Jalen Carter decided it was time.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
To do a hot tour.

Speaker 1 (42:04):
He wasn't a hot to a girl, he was a
hot to a guy.

Speaker 3 (42:10):
Yeah, and got himself thrown out of the ball game
before the game even started. As he and Jack could
tell your story walking and that's exactly what they did.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
What did he do to make them that mad?

Speaker 3 (42:25):
Yeah it was it was angry and he walked off
knowing he was like, did.

Speaker 2 (42:28):
I really get kicked out before the game? The games up?

Speaker 1 (42:32):
Yeah, how you get fired on your day off on
the field and they just kicked it off that he
was coming on the field.

Speaker 2 (42:40):
And the thing that happened is there was an injury.

Speaker 3 (42:44):
That's the only reason why they were even by each other.
On the opening kickoff of Philadelphia, Eagle got hurt, had
to be carted off and that's the only reason why
they even were even being able to do that.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
If that guy would not have went down, that would
have never happened.

Speaker 3 (43:03):
Yeah, that CD, after all his drops, he can't believe it.
And he said, I lived for days like this. CD
did not have his basket.

Speaker 1 (43:11):
We got to get our truth, dropping our truth always
like he'll go to the wrong town or he'll announce
that he's in there.

Speaker 2 (43:17):
And he said, oh sorry, y'all, that's my bad, bad,
my bad.

Speaker 9 (43:22):
Yeah, he did that here he called here, I mean Houston,
he came here.

Speaker 2 (43:26):
Here.

Speaker 1 (43:27):
You do it, you do it all the time. I'm
telling you. I was there the original day. We were
in Austria and he said Australia and the crab.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
I remember lean into the referee. He's like, what's going
on and the rep said, we're in Austria.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
The one I went, oh Austria, I'm sorry, my bad.

Speaker 2 (43:50):
And then it became a bit.

Speaker 9 (43:52):
Because I remember the one in green No, he was
in Milwaukee and he yelled out green Bay.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
So and so now you're looking at these games and
you're trying to understand are the Dallas Cowboys that team
that we underestimated, we did we took for granted or
are they right where they are because they lost the game.

Speaker 1 (44:15):
No, they lost the game, but they lost the game
in a fashion that it was respectable. And you saw
why they lost four drops from the best wide receiver
in the NFL, arguably top five, some top three. Somebody
will argue with you are right, top three wide receiver,
and surprisingly it wouldn't be me on this one, right,
And Dak Prescott not having a great rapport with the guys,

(44:40):
he underthrew and he he didn't have faith in the receivers.
And that's because he hadn't been throwing the ball to
him in game speed, because it's different.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
Pickings needs the ball high.

Speaker 1 (44:54):
He needed to throw the ball over the top to Ferguson,
and that would have been a touchdown.

Speaker 2 (45:00):
And don't fumble the ball.

Speaker 1 (45:01):
But the number one thing about the Cowboys is the
fact that they did not show any of this in
the preseason.

Speaker 2 (45:10):
The run style. They just ran base run plays.

Speaker 1 (45:13):
Did you see the back blocking They look like Detroit.
They look the way their blocking scheme looked like Detroit.
They finished blocks. You saw guys that on that long
forty nine yard run by Miles Sanders, did you see
the blocking scheme and and and uh and still came

(45:35):
all the way from the right tackle spot. Bang stealed
that to the house. If that would have been Jaylen Blue,
they he would have been walking backwards across town for him,
So that would have been the best. That's a play
that they need to keep in mind. Hey, we need
a guy with speed in this spot. You won't get
run down by number fifty three. You get run down

(45:58):
by a linebacker.

Speaker 2 (45:59):
You deserve to be tackled. I like Bron though Bron is.

Speaker 1 (46:02):
A bron is a great player. He's an All Pro player,
O Pro Bowl player. But still, you never should be
run down by a linebacker of your running back.

Speaker 3 (46:11):
I agree with that. And then you fumbled the ball
right after that, and then you fumbled. Yeah, so yeah,
you you you failed today.

Speaker 1 (46:18):
You failed today, and the Cowboys not even my team,
no one, I still see.

Speaker 2 (46:23):
I still care. So let me ask you this, who
is your team? Now?

Speaker 3 (46:26):
We didn't get a chance to finally get everything through, but.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
Who is your team? Hard? I'm a man without a country.
Come on, man, you got to pick somebody be loyal
to the soil. Come on that, Henry a lawyer. Yeah,
we need you to get something, dude.

Speaker 3 (46:43):
I need you to understand who your team is going
to be so they understand.

Speaker 1 (46:48):
Yeah, I'm a Cowboy fan. It just hurts, man. I
just I'm so tired of being.

Speaker 2 (46:54):
Oh my god, you and Michael Irvin my twin. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (47:00):
So I look at this and the Cowboys, and I say,
all right, this is going to be a good season.
Because of the way that they roll through things. I
thought that they responded, They played tough. We got to
see some good things happening. Defensively, they're trying to piece
some things together. There was a bunch of holding calls

(47:22):
that were missed during this ball game. Yeah, umbo sides,
so don't don't trip Philadelphia acclimated too. But you ended
up winning this ball game. You're one to zero in
the division and now you move on. The Cowboys move
on to play the Giants next week, and so that's
gonna be a big matchup for them.

Speaker 2 (47:43):
So we'll see how it all plays out.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
But I will say this, if you were if you
are a Cowboys fan, then you understand what it looks
like to be like that.

Speaker 2 (47:54):
If you're a Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (47:55):
Fan, do you walk around with your chest out wearing
the gear?

Speaker 2 (48:02):
I wore my clown gear yesterday. Award.

Speaker 1 (48:05):
I think it's clown gear now because we didn't respect
what coach Schottenheimer said last year when he said he
was going to run the ball and how he was
going to run the ball, and he made me a believer.
And I told you I liked him the whole off season,
the way that he tried to bring them guys together

(48:26):
and said, look, there's guys that's on this team that are.

Speaker 2 (48:28):
Not going to be playing for us.

Speaker 1 (48:31):
And I want people that leave here to talk about
how great it was, how great of an experience it
was to train with us and to compete with us.

Speaker 2 (48:41):
Man, that's big.

Speaker 1 (48:42):
Because you already saying from a business standpoint, everybody's not
going to play for me. But I want everybody to
respect me and love what we're doing here. And I
thought that was awesome philosophy for a coach. Well most
people don't say that.

Speaker 3 (48:57):
Well, I mean it's still early in the great period,
so he might've got what'd you give him? What would
you give him? On the play calling in the way
that the game was executed?

Speaker 1 (49:07):
I would say I would give them a solid be
you would give you would give I'll give Dallas play
calling a solid be, the run.

Speaker 2 (49:16):
Shot a solid B.

Speaker 1 (49:18):
I'm I'm a little upset at ceedee Lamb. I'm a
little upset with Dak Prescott. What and you were saying
that Dak Prescott shouldn't absorbed to blame in this. But
the fumble mouse mouse Sanders, the thumbers fault, that's that
wasn't Dak fault and that's on him.

Speaker 2 (49:35):
The four drops CD lamb. Dak is third.

Speaker 1 (49:39):
I'm going against I said Dak first, but I'm I
apologized Dak. That is the third problem in the in
the in the equation because he did not have a
rapport with those guys and it's based off not having
work reps and that's his fault.

Speaker 2 (49:55):
He should tell.

Speaker 1 (49:56):
Just like Joe Burrow, just man, listen, these are the
best quarterbacks in the league. Did you Did you see
Jalen Hurts?

Speaker 2 (50:06):
He played in all three.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
Preseason games, a whole quarter Dak didn't do it once.

Speaker 2 (50:13):
That's why Dak is rusty. Come on, man, two more
weeks you'll be all right. We shall see, we shall
see how this all guys out. It gonna be all right.
We'll be out. I'm fumbled the ball in Kencher. Please.

Speaker 3 (50:25):
Coming up next, we're gonna talk to Mike Craven of
Dave Campbell Texas Football.

Speaker 2 (50:30):
It is time for I thirty five.

Speaker 3 (50:33):
Series utsa Texas State Who you win? Right here on
the morning kick off on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Liz All coming up in the next segment, we'll have
the World's Strongest take by the world's strongest man I
See breaks down all things in football.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
But right now we want to talk some football.

Speaker 1 (50:56):
And what better way to get this party started than
going and talking to our guy, Mike Craven of Dave
Campbell's Texas Football. You can follow them on social media
at Craven, Mike and Mike.

Speaker 2 (51:09):
This is a big, big.

Speaker 3 (51:10):
Weekend for the I thirty five matchup between Texas State
in your UTSA road Runners, how excited are you about
this matchup today?

Speaker 2 (51:21):
I mean, this weekend.

Speaker 5 (51:23):
Should be a really fun one.

Speaker 6 (51:25):
The over under at sixty five and a half, that's
the highest over under in Week two across all of
college football, So.

Speaker 5 (51:31):
Should be a lot of points.

Speaker 6 (51:33):
Alan Odome should have over forty thousand people in there.
The parking lots before the game are going to be
a warzone, and it should be a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (51:40):
And you know, you sit there and you think about
how this matchup has grown. I mean, this is one
of those games where Texas State and utsaying they understand
they're battling for the same types of players year in
and year out. Taylor just being one of the best
coaches that is out there.

Speaker 1 (52:01):
You also got GJ. Kenny and what he's been able
to do.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
This is an outstanding matchup for more than just these
two fan bases, correct.

Speaker 6 (52:12):
Oh yeah, I mean they're kind of mirror image teams
of each other, really good young quarterbacks, explosive, high scoring offenses,
questions on the defensive side of the ball. And what
I find most interesting about this rivalry is that the
fans really hate each other, Like there is a true
hatred between the fans of UTSA and Texas State. As
you mentioned, they're kind of competing for the same you know,

(52:36):
love from recruits, from fans, from national media, all that
kind of stuff. But the head coaches are as tight
as you can get. You know, Jeff Traylor coach GJ.
Kenny his senior year in Gilmer after Gj's father got shot,
and so there's a long storied backstory between those two.

Speaker 5 (52:51):
I mean GJ. Kenny was in Jordan Trayler's wedding. You know,
Jeff Traylor.

Speaker 6 (52:55):
Helped Kenny get the job at UIW and then at
Texas State. And so while there's a lot of animos
between the fans, I think there's a lot of animosity
between some of the players, there's not at the coaching level.
And it's just kind of makes for a fun and
interesting rivalry with a lot of layers.

Speaker 1 (53:10):
So you got two really quality coaches going head to
head in there, Who do you think has the edge?

Speaker 6 (53:20):
I mean, I would still give it to Jeff Traylor.
I mean he's won two conference championships. They're twenty nine
and three at home. You know, I think UTSA has had,
you know, a better opportunity to recruit. They've had more
money in the American The gap will start to close
as the as Texas State gets into the PAC twelve
and they get those media rights deals. So I think

(53:42):
Jeff Traylor still has the advantage on the coaching side
of it, but I think GJ is one of the
best young coaches in the country. It's just about consistency.
I think one of the things that's held Texas State back.
You know, they've had two really good years, but you
look at the end of the regular season and they're
seven and five, and I think one of the reasons
is just consistency. A game or two each year that
they probably shouldn't have. They're gonna be up for this game,

(54:04):
though there's there's gonna be no doubt about it for
Texas State. It'll be the rest of the season where
we kind of see if they can they can get
over that hump, because they've proven that they can be
up for big games against UTSA, against Arizona State. I
think it's just that weekend, week out consistency that Trailer
has the advantage on over Kitty, and that just comes
from experience.

Speaker 1 (54:22):
Hard has a cousin that's that's a gambling man. That's
a better Like, do you think that sixty five line
is feasible or is it? You know, that's that's a
little bit of serd.

Speaker 2 (54:36):
I mean, I think it's feasible.

Speaker 6 (54:39):
I'd probably go under just because it's such a high number,
but sixty five and a half is what you know,
thirty five to thirty one, you know, and you catch
the over. I could easily see that. I mean, both
of these secondaries the past defenses last year were both
ranked in the hundreds. Both scoring defenses were on the
bottom half of the of the FBS. Utsa's defense was

(54:59):
really really a bunch of new players on both sides
of the ball. The secondaries are question marks, and these
offenses are incredible. Owen McCown, Brad Jackson two really good quarterbacks.
Jeff Traylor doesn't have the perception of gjk I think
everybody realizes and knows that GJ. Kinny is a really
good offensive coach. Jeff Traylor has been doing really high

(55:20):
scoring offenses his whole career. Yeah, even going back to Gilmour, like,
they always scored a lot of points. And so I
wouldn't be surprised if this is one of those forty
two to thirty eight last teams with the ball wins.
It's going to come down to either that or the
defense that comes up with the turnover too well.

Speaker 3 (55:35):
You talk a lot about Texas football, Texas High school,
but mostly Texas College and big upset. Last week in
New York, Tarleton State went up there and got that
big w against Army Who. I don't think anybody bet
for Tarleton except for Tarleton fans just because But what

(55:56):
is it about that Tarleton program that has people looking
at them a little bit different because they've getting better
and better every single year.

Speaker 6 (56:05):
Yeah, I mean it's funding and support they've They've really
gotten behind.

Speaker 5 (56:08):
Them as a university.

Speaker 6 (56:09):
They have some donors out there in West Texas that
have some oil money and are interested in Tarleton becoming,
you know, an FBS program. I think they're on the
same track as a as a Sam Houston was. I
wouldn't be surprised in three or four years, maybe even
sooner than that, that we have fourteen FBS teams in
the state of Texas and Tarleton's next up.

Speaker 5 (56:29):
You know of Conference USA is looking.

Speaker 6 (56:31):
To fill the gap that UTEP left and having two
schools in the state of Texas. I think Tarleton would
be a shiny object that they'd go after. The Texans. Yeah,
I think it's just motivation. I think it's just you know,
the alumni base and some guys out there going, hey,
we can we can make this thing good. Their stadium's
gotten a lot nicer. The president of the athletic director
are behind it. And alignment. I mean we've seen at

(56:54):
Texas State. You know, alignment matters so much in college athletics,
and it feels like Tarleton has the right kind.

Speaker 3 (56:59):
Right now, we're talking to Mike Craven of Dave Campbell's
Texas Football. You can follow him on social media at
Craven Mike, and I also wanted to ask you this
because there's a big matchup this weekend between the Baylor
Bears and the SMU Mustangs.

Speaker 2 (57:14):
Two offenses.

Speaker 3 (57:15):
You were talking about sixty five and a half, they're
sixty three.

Speaker 2 (57:19):
And a half.

Speaker 3 (57:20):
Is that what we should expect with this with both
of these teams because of Jennings and Robertson.

Speaker 5 (57:27):
Yeah, and both defenses is a huge question marks.

Speaker 6 (57:29):
You know, we didn't get to see much of SMU's
defense last last week against East Texas A and M,
but they replaced seven or eight starters, so a lot
of new faces there. Alexander Kilgore, their star linebacker, was
banged up. Not sure if he's going to play against Baylor.
So but you know, the Baylor defense that we saw
not very good. You know what was interesting to me
is they gave up three hundred plus rushing yards, but

(57:51):
they didn't really adjust much to try to stop it.
Like they stayed in cover two, they stayed in quarters.
And it's said to me that David Randa is so
worried about his secondary that he didn't think there was
much he could do to help the run. You know,
he was worried about cam Coleman Singleton and those guys
going over the top. SMU doesn't have the body types
as Auburn. You know, they're not going to be able
to line up in the trenches and just blow Baylor

(58:13):
off the ball on both.

Speaker 5 (58:13):
Sides of scrimmage.

Speaker 6 (58:14):
And so I think this is a better matchup for
the Bears, but it is one where I give the
advantage to both offenses. The Baylers offense is really good.
SMU's offense is really good. This is another one that
that could be a lot of fun and could be
could be pretty big in terms of the overall point total.

Speaker 3 (58:30):
I want to stay right there because I'm glad you
said that about the offenses of what they were able
to do.

Speaker 2 (58:35):
When Dave A.

Speaker 3 (58:36):
Randa took that job at Baylor, he was coming in
as a defensive minded coach and he had some solid
players there. What is happening with his style of defense
and where they're not having success right now?

Speaker 6 (58:50):
It's a great question. I don't think that they I
think that defense requires a big, bully body in the
middle that can occupy blocks and then you let the
linebackers go make plays freely. And they just don't have
the size up front and the players that no tackle
and defensive tackle to do that. But I'm always concerned

(59:12):
when the head coach's side of the ball isn't good
right right. If I'm a Texas fan and Steve Sarkisian's
offense is struggling for four out of the five years
he's the head coach, I'm worried. If I'm an A
and M fan and Mike Elko's defense has struggled for
four out of five years, I'm really worried. In four
out of five years that Dave Randa has been the
head coach, they've been in the bottom half of scoring defense.
They've been sixtieth or worse than four out of those

(59:33):
five years. I think overall in the five years they're
averaging like twenty eight points six points a game allowed.

Speaker 5 (59:39):
Like, has this not been very good?

Speaker 6 (59:41):
If you take away that twenty twenty one defense, there's
an argument to be made that a. Stavotol isn't hired
and the offense isn't so good last year, Like Aaranda's
not there right now, and so I think he's back
on the hot seat, especially if they start slow again.
They got SMU this week and then in the two
of the first three games in the Big Twelve are
Arizona State and Kansas, So there is the real possibility

(01:00:05):
that Baylor's two and four again for the second straight years.

Speaker 5 (01:00:09):
Something to really watch for the Bears.

Speaker 1 (01:00:10):
Yeah, that was kind of He's in the fire, not
the scene, not a hot seat, He's in the fire
the way you put it.

Speaker 5 (01:00:19):
His buyout is very big.

Speaker 6 (01:00:22):
He got a pretty good extension after that twenty twenty
one Big Twelve championship year, and then that's helped. It's
private school, so we don't know the exact number, but
it's it's north of thirteen fourteen million dollars and in
REVS share time, that's a hard amount to come up with,
right because you're coming up with fifteen sixteen million dollars
to pay the roster. Then you got to come up
with thirteen million dollars to pay off the coach. Then

(01:00:42):
you got to come up with another ten million dollars
to get a new coach and coaching staff. I think
that's why we didn't see as many coaching changes last year,
as this money starts being moved in different spots. But eventually,
I think the fan base kind of revolts and you
got to you gotta make a change, And you.

Speaker 5 (01:00:57):
Know, he could turn around.

Speaker 6 (01:00:57):
They go beat SMU this week both of those Cans
State Arizona State games are at home.

Speaker 5 (01:01:01):
Like they can turn it around before and two and
be fine.

Speaker 6 (01:01:04):
But there is a possibility that this goes off the rails,
and I just don't know how much more time he gets.

Speaker 3 (01:01:10):
Well, I thought the same thing and watching that last
week and watching the way Auburn was able to run
all the way through them, it was kind of disturbing
before we let you go, what's your prediction for Texas
State UTSA. I know you, I know you're a road runner,
but how do you see this game going?

Speaker 6 (01:01:30):
Well, you know, I think it's important to point out
I went to UTSA like twelve years before, so.

Speaker 5 (01:01:36):
I didn't go to class all that much.

Speaker 6 (01:01:38):
I wasn't the marquee students fight in that way.

Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
I'm going to give the advantage to UTSA.

Speaker 5 (01:01:45):
I think it's going to be a close game.

Speaker 6 (01:01:46):
I'd probably I'd probably take the points in Texas State
if I was if I was betting on it, just
because you know, I think this is going to be
such a close game. But I give the advantage to
UTSA one because they're at home. As I mentioned, twenty
nine to three under Jeff Trailer, two of those losses
to Army, the other ones in double overtime to Houston
when Clayton Tune was there. And then they also have
a quarterback that's played in this football game, Owen McCown,

(01:02:08):
a really good G five quarterback, had a tough time
of it in Week two last year at Texas State.
I'd imagine Brad Jackson, Texas State's new quarterback has some
growing pains as well in the Alamodome with all that
ruckus so because of the home record, because of the
experience at quarterback, I'm gonna give the edge to Utsa,
but just barely. I think this is a real point
toss game.

Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
Thank you for coming on, brother, tell Charlie, I said, hello.

Speaker 5 (01:02:31):
I will, sir, I appreciate y'all.

Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
All right there, he is Mike Craven of Dave Campbell's
Texas Football.

Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
You can follow him at Craven Mike.

Speaker 3 (01:02:39):
When we come back, you'll hear from the world's Strongest
man as he brings you his world's strongest take. Right
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Great stuff from Mike Craven of Dave
Campbell's Texas Football as he broke down a lot that
was going on in the state of Texas. But right
now we're gonna give it away to the world's strongest

(01:03:01):
man in w W Hall of Famer d Mark Henry
as he brings you his world's strongest take.

Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
Take it away, Harge, Yes, sir, you know what time
it is. Time.

Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man. My I guess back then they didn't know me.
Now I'm hot. They all on me. They heard me
in the break talk about I want to talk about

(01:03:35):
the defense, and that is exactly what I'm gonna do
right now, is talk about the Cowboys defense. We were
so enamored with the offense and how much money has
been spent with this offensive unit for the Cowboys that.

Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
We don't give the defense enough credit.

Speaker 1 (01:03:59):
And Michael Parsons departing from the Cowboys defense, I was
looking closely at the continuity of the defense because I
was thinking, well, there's gonna be some holes, there's gonna
be a lot of busted plays, there's gonna be people
flying free down field, not so fast, any immortal words

(01:04:22):
of our guy league. Corso, even with Traymond Diggs not playing,
Elom did a decent enough job. He didn't do, you know, great,
but he played. They did not have the Marion overshown
agent zero as we call him.

Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
I think that.

Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
This this defense needs guys to step up.

Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
They need guys that.

Speaker 1 (01:04:55):
You know, revel Is didn't play like So there's a
lot lot of factors that are not and there's not
a lot of tools that's in the two box. And
you not once did you see a Cowboys busted play
where Otis guy was Scott free running running without somebody

(01:05:19):
covering him. They got a big play during the game,
but it was schemed. They did a good The Eagles
did a good job of scheming that play to get
that forty five yard pass. That was work and it's
gonna happen in every game. But I was optimistic about

(01:05:40):
the defensive line, which I never said that once last year.
This the defensive line held up. They get pressure, they
played disciplined, They didn't try to get up the field
too much.

Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
And create lanes.

Speaker 1 (01:05:56):
But the one problem with the Cowboys defense last night
was the fact that their middle linebacker went in coverage
and rather than him going in coverage, he should have
been spying the quarterback. If you eliminate five plays by

(01:06:16):
the quarterback, the Cowboys win that game. Even with all
the mistakes CD lamb with the four drops, Dak Prenscott
not throwing the ball high enough for Ferguson and for pickings,
and the fumble, do not drop the groceries on the ground.

(01:06:40):
Even with those offensive issues, only one big defensive Fapuh
for PA, and that was not having the quarterback spied.

Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
What say, youth, Well, the only thing that I'm gonna
disagree with you on on that is the fact of
the linebacker going and coverage.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
If they don't call a spy, what's he supposed to do.
He's supposed to do his job.

Speaker 1 (01:07:04):
Well, he can throw it to the tight end then
and and.

Speaker 2 (01:07:08):
But that's you've got help in the back end.

Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
But if I'm covering the tight end and that's my guy,
that's what the call is.

Speaker 2 (01:07:14):
That's what I'm saying. If they don't have a.

Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
Spy call on the quarterback, you got to do what
your your responsibilities are.

Speaker 2 (01:07:22):
And I do agree with this though. The running game,
and here's the numbers.

Speaker 3 (01:07:25):
The Eagles rush for eighteen yards on twelve carries on
runs between the tackles. That means you know who was
inactive yesterday, Mozzie Smith. Mozzie Smith was inactive. This is
your first round pick, Mozzie Smith. Go ahead and do
what you always do. Mark, trade him. Got to get
him out of here with him. He's not helpful.

Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
He's not He should have been thrown in with the
Michael Parsons trade.

Speaker 2 (01:07:52):
Just let him go. Get rid of that money. Yes,
because he's he's How are you trade him nothing? You
are not active in.

Speaker 1 (01:08:03):
First game of the year, you're not active, Mazi Smith
and first round pick. But to finish, they only held
him to one point five yards per carry last night,
one point five between the tackles. That Clark effect seems
to be the right thing. It's Iraku played really good

(01:08:27):
too for a rookie. Yes, they're gonna get gonna get better,
Sam Williams, if he wasn't getting held every single play
bro he got, he got held at least three times.

Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
Boy, what did you say his name was? Is a Raku?
Got held by you know who? And you know what
they do went.

Speaker 1 (01:08:48):
To who who?

Speaker 2 (01:08:50):
But you gotta make sure that these things.

Speaker 3 (01:08:52):
I'm optimistic about the Dallas Cowboys more than I even was.
I know, we were going back and forth about the
season and we're gonna have a lot of fun with
it because we are the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (01:09:03):
You know, man, they should have won that ball. They
should have won that game. And if the weather didn't
play a part yesterday.

Speaker 2 (01:09:12):
And they didn't drop the groceries on the ground.

Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
They didn't drop all them passes and Niggs could have
been a little bit.

Speaker 2 (01:09:18):
Was candy and nuts. We wouldn't even be talking about
this right now. Well, we're talking right now about butterfingers.
Coming up next.

Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
We're gonna close up the show and send you to
damn Patrick.

Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
But we got some more football.

Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
That is going on tonight, and I gotta make fun
of my boy man. He I could see his heart
beat yesterday. I'll talk to her right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.

Speaker 2 (01:09:44):
This z all, what a.

Speaker 3 (01:09:45):
Great show we had, and what a great week of shows.
Right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. Tomorrow morning,
we'll get the party started down off of Bevo Boulevard
as we get ready.

Speaker 2 (01:09:57):
For Longhorns game day.

Speaker 1 (01:09:59):
You can listen to Third and Longhorn right before us.

Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
We kick it off at eight, they kick it off at.

Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
Seven, and then you can listen to the game right
here for your home for Texas Longhorns Athletics Craigway, Roger
Wallace and Will Matthews. And then postgame you can listen
to the Third and Longhorn crew right here on AM
thirteen hundred the Zone. Make sure tomorrow too, you're gonna

(01:10:26):
be gearing up for game day. It's gonna be early
in the morning. What better way to gear up for
game day than getting ready with a new Freedo pie
Klachi right there from the Kulachi factory. You got two
Austin locations, North Lamar and West Palmer Kolachi Factory your
MVP for tailgating. Either do it on the app or

(01:10:46):
visit those locations as well. We also got big game tonight.
We got Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Chargers. I
got Jim Harbaugh as my coach of the Year coming
into this. But I want you to hear from Travis
Kelcey and Patrick Mahomes as they are in Brazil and

(01:11:09):
they met with the media, and I don't know if
you're gonna be able to tell the difference.

Speaker 6 (01:11:13):
See, we've had a plan for this all summer long
and now we're just ready to play football game.

Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
And Travis, what was last night like at the airport?

Speaker 5 (01:11:20):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:11:20):
Man, it was crazy. There's a lot of fun seeing
all the fans there.

Speaker 6 (01:11:25):
And he had that one coming for telling everybody I
didn't know where Brazil was.

Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
I that was that was a really good impression too.

Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
Well.

Speaker 3 (01:11:37):
I mean when you hang around somebody for that long
and they've been together for a long time.

Speaker 2 (01:11:41):
They hang out away from the field. How sound to you, man?
You you sound like you get mad at me when
I do it. Now, I'm not gonna get mad. I'm
giving you a permission. That's what I do.

Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
That's that's a kids phrase, though, That's how you sound.

Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
I know you.

Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
I think you went with Kansas City tonight. I did
that matchup. I think Kelsey got a lot to prove.
You know, he's lost fifteen pounds.

Speaker 1 (01:12:09):
He came in the training camp in shape, and he
said that he's engaged.

Speaker 2 (01:12:15):
He's engaged.

Speaker 1 (01:12:15):
Now he's not, you know, up gallivant and all that
kind of stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:12:19):
He's well rested. Yeah, he got clean red. That guy
says that he wants to prove that he's not washed.

Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
Talking about cover two, Cover four, Cover zero, man covered,
we're talking, we're learning.

Speaker 3 (01:12:32):
And she might be able to do the halftime show
in the super Bowl. They were talking about her being
might be the halftime show in a super and.

Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
It don't pay. Yeah, Well, she's got plenty of money,
she does.

Speaker 1 (01:12:45):
Yeah, And the entertainment value for the NFL, well it's
gonna pay dividend.

Speaker 2 (01:12:49):
When you say, Bill, that's a whole nother bracket.

Speaker 3 (01:12:52):
Yeah, she gonna, she gonna, She's gonna get a little
bread out of this for sure. Also this weekend we
have the Texans versus the Ram Matthew Stafford talked about
this Texans defense, which we all believe is gonna be
pretty stout.

Speaker 4 (01:13:06):
Ye.

Speaker 2 (01:13:06):
They got really good players.

Speaker 12 (01:13:08):
You know, got guys up front, think and Russell Passer
doing a nice job stopping the run, and then I
think their back end is as talented as as anybody
in the league. They do a heck of a job
with you know, Mary and Russian coverage, which is what
you want as a defense. So, you know, I got
a ton of respect for him obviously, he played at
a really high level last year and have a lot
of the same players and added a few more, so
you know, it would be a huge.

Speaker 2 (01:13:28):
Challenge for us.

Speaker 1 (01:13:29):
Yeah, what do you what do you think is gonna
be the the serious part of that defense? Is gonna
be real or is it gonna be stingling? I think,
I mean, I can't say both. But Will Anderson Jr.
Is somebody that a lot of people believe create the pressure. Yeah,
he's getting better and better and better every single year,
and his talent is get off on the line of

(01:13:49):
scrimmage is amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
So we will see that plays out.

Speaker 9 (01:13:54):
Especially when you got Hunt on the other side, it's
like you can't you can't block everybody.

Speaker 2 (01:13:59):
Yeah, it's uh.

Speaker 3 (01:14:00):
It's an interesting dynamic on that defense, and I think
that is why so many people are looking at that
defense to be a very very.

Speaker 1 (01:14:07):
Special one this season. So we'll see how it all
plays out.

Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
Mark, I know I'll give you a lot of crap,
but this is a special weekend for the Henry family.
Your son is getting an opportunity to play at Oklahoma
this weekend and there playing against Michigan. Nationally televised game
Day will be there. It's gonna be a fun weekend
for you. It's gonna be good.

Speaker 2 (01:14:30):
Man.

Speaker 1 (01:14:30):
I'm gonna be here out there in the north end
of the I'm staying so you're doing that.

Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
That's what we're doing well doing that up regardless if.

Speaker 1 (01:14:44):
I'm on the stream yard, how many shows I miss
quite a few, quite a few.

Teen days. We're glad you're back.

Speaker 5 (01:14:54):

Speaker 1 (01:14:54):
It's always gonna because I'm about to throw a big
one at you, right now because I saw a picture
of you yesterday and all I kept saying, you remember
when Eminem was doing his rap battle and he was
going through everybody and he was going up against Lotto,
and Lotto had the tank top on and he said.

Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
All you said this, I don't fit you.

Speaker 1 (01:15:20):
That's kind of what your shirt was looking like yesterday
when you was at what was that? I was in
Barbados at the at the Royal Stadium. Okay, And the
picture we'll post it on the Twitter and all of
social media.

Speaker 2 (01:15:35):
You can go on d Mark Henry on everything is it?

Speaker 3 (01:15:40):
But you know one so that you can look at
it right now on if you're on the stream, you
can see this shirt and it looked like it was
painted on him because he was you should have been
in Brazil on the ball.

Speaker 2 (01:15:54):

Speaker 1 (01:15:56):

a Cruiger head on your chest because of.

Speaker 2 (01:16:24):

you're putting on your football jersey and they have to
pull on the side.

Speaker 2 (01:16:37):
I'm gonna stooge myself off.

Speaker 1 (01:16:39):
I had to stretch it just so I could get my.

Speaker 2 (01:16:42):
Head through the whole. That's what you should have said,
I can't do it.

Speaker 6 (01:16:47):
I was.

Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
I was bringing heavy putting that shirt out. I had
to get help too.

Speaker 1 (01:16:52):
Every time, everybody's like they pull it down.

Speaker 2 (01:16:54):
In the back that much almost so it was coming back.

Speaker 1 (01:16:58):
I'm like, put it down in the Somebody was out
there trying to horse collar him, like him.

Speaker 2 (01:17:05):
