He is d Mark Henry.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Good morning Austin, And of course we've got our guy
Marcus behind the boards. And if you want to be
a part of the show, all you gotta do is
texta word texas followed by your message to eight one
five three zero. Standard data and message rates may apply.
That's the word texas followed by your message to eight
one five three zero. Standard data and message rates may apply. Also,
(01:51):
if you want to leave us your opinion, you can
voice it by using that talkback feature on the new
and improved and always free Heart radio app. We'll hear
it instantly, and if it's good enough, you might even
hear it only there. All right, Look, enough is enough
with the nonsense when it comes to arch Manning And
(02:14):
what do I mean by that? Well, The Athletic wrote
an article yesterday, took the time. Took the time to
talk about a guy that has only played five collegiate
football games, and if his name was Arch Smith, this
would not even be a discussion. So the headline reads like,
(02:37):
this is Arch manning college football's first flop. Why his
slow start feels unprecedented? Well, let me just tell you something,
mister Arthur. Of the article that you wrote, I'm not
even gonna put your name out there, but I do
want to calm the masses down a little bit. Has
(03:01):
Art not played up to what you guys built him
up to be. Possibly, if you go and look at
the numbers, he's right there at every single step of
the way with the one who everyone thought was gonna
win the Heisman, and that's John Mattier. Everybody was talking
about Materi and what he was doing at Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Well, their numbers are pretty dog gone similar.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
And you start to look at how the game was
lost last week. As bad as some of you might
have thought he played, Texas was still in the ballgame
they were driving. Was the inexperience of him not throwing
the ball out there or throwing it out of bounds
and not taking the sack.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Could have been part of the problem. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Absolutely, you know why, because he doesn't have that kind
of experience. He's played five collegiate games and here, we
are judging him unmercifully, and for people to continue to
take these shots at him, it's kind of ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
He said early at.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
SEC media Days, he said, why are y'all hyping me up?
I haven't even played, I haven't done anything yet. That
wasn't his doing. He didn't ask for that. True, everybody
was talking about it, and I sat right here on
this show and I said, pump your breaks. The kid
(04:35):
hasn't even played yet. Everybody last year was trying to
get him on the field so bad that they were
looking at Quinn as just a placeholder, and I.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Kept defending Quinn.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah, but the thing that drives me nuts is that
everybody has an opinion of about a quarterback when their.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Own quarterback is not that good. Regardless of what.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
School you're at, there's a lot of people that don't
play the quarterback position well right now, hardest position in
sports to really analyze and to figure out if that
person is good or not. And it's usually intangibles, not
the physical talent exactly exactly, great point, mark, And that's
(05:29):
the thing that is really disturbing. If his name was
arch Harge, it wouldn't be a conversation. He's just be
the quarterback at the University of Texas. Doay when you
look at his numbers that are still pretty good compared
to what he's been going through the last couple of weeks,
because we all see that the line has struggled mightily,
(05:53):
and we're gonna get to that in a little bit.
But it's just it's just disappointing because this is the
way that the national media does this kind of stuff.
They built him up to a number that wasn't even fair.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
We said it.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
I said, you'd be a fool to think that he
was gonna be the number one overall pick and he
was gonna win the Heisman and Texas was gonna win
the national championship all in the same year with a
quarterback that is just now starting. People ran out and
bet that, Oh yeah, that's why. That's why those casinos
(06:32):
keep getting better.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Keep the lights, that's how they keep the lights on.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
That's why they got that ac pumping in there, because
they know they're gonna catch you at a moment and
be like, hey man, going over there and place that
bad Oh you saw a great throw, and all of
a sudden he was your guy. The guy has to learn.
Is he capable of doing some great things? We've seen it,
We've seen it. But all he has to do is
continue to keep working. He doesn't pay attention to the
(07:00):
outside noise. But it gets loud. Yeah, it gets loud,
but this is not his doing. Or he's still you
can still see him thinking. Yes, I've seen him at
times go shouit, I throw this away. And then he
gets tackled right or he gets sacked like when when
it becomes second nature to him, old hat.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
If you will, you won't see.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Him thinking you would just see a play get thrown
out of bound. Yes, you will see him run and slide.
You'll see him get everybody back together, like he sees
the defense that he's never seen before.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
In a line shift. He can't check out of the
play yet There's been several times where I see him
go all right, well, here we go. He don't know
what he can't change it on the fly, yet he will.
He will be able to. He's getting there. And the
thing about.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
It is, like I said, the frustrating part is none
of this he asked for. He wasn't ever walking around
talking about me, me, me, me me. I'm the one
that is gonna be the savior for the University of
technolog He was never talking like that.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
It was all the media.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Paul Feinebaum confessed his love.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
He confessed his love. That was not Archer's doing.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
It was his last name that got everybody gassed up.
But you cannot tell me that this young man is
not going out there and competing every single day.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
And everybody, like I said, everybody.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Has an opinion about it, but they can't do what
he's doing.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
And that is the thing that drives me nuts.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Yes, our job is to come in and we'll be
critical in certain situations, and.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
We would be doing our job if we didn't.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Absolutely, But if you go back and you watch these games,
you'll see you'll see don't look at the stat line,
go watch and see what's going on in the game.
Watch the entire game, not bits and pieces clips.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
If there was a if he had missed.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
The pass or something like that, we understand that. But
have you ever thought about his happy feet and the
reason why he has it is because he's got PTSD,
because he keeps.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Getting smoked in the pocket.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
And you know, there's so many things that could be
changed for him if you got an offensive line that
is struggling.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
As my man RB used to.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Say, quick game, quick game, quick game, quick game. Get
the ball out of his hand, do something to help him. Yeah,
quit taking seven step drops knowing you don't have time
to do that.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
By the time your back foot hit, you're getting hit man.
You know.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
The one thing I noticed about Arch is a lot
of times he makes the right read, but it's like
he's rushing to throw. And that's the reason why that
bothers his accuracy because of the protection issues.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Right and again, can he play better? Absolutely? I think
as a whole we can say the whole team needs
to play better.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
So yes, is there room for improvement? Do you see
him getting better?
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (10:23):
I do. I do see him getting better. And I
told you he'll be here next year. So you're got
Arch again, and he's gonna be better next year too.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
But he's got to.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Continue to keep his head down and continue to work.
And as coach Sark said, eliminate the outside noise. But
that article is just a hit piece, and it's something
that is Let's put it like this, when people write
those types of articles, it is for this reaction.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yea.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
They want us to talk about them and out exactly.
But I don't think if it wasn't for again, his
last name, none of this would be a conversation.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
And again with the last.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Name, he's getting a lot of pub he's getting a
lot of commercials, he's getting a lot of endorsements. He's
been able to do some amazing things because of his
last name.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
And Heavy is the one that bears the.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Crown, right, Heavy is the head that bears the crown,
and he understands that.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
But let's keep it a buck.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
There's a lot of quarterbacks that you thought was going
to be good, and y'all know who y'all are are
talking about.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
My guy's not as.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Good as I thought he was gonna be. Yeah, we're
just getting started here on the Morning Kickoff sports Radio,
Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Busy Day Today. Danny
Davis of Dawson, American Statesman, Tommy Harris, former bear k
Town legend and Oklahoma soenter, and Alex okafor will all
be joining us today on the Morning Kickoff right here
(11:57):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. Coming up, in the
next segment, we will have our guy, Danny Davis of
the Austin American Statesman joining us to talk all things Texas.
At the top of the hour, we'll have former Chicago
Bear Oklahoma Sooner and Kate Town legend, my guy Tommy
(12:20):
Harris will be joining us at eight o'clock and Lifetime
Longhorn Alex Okafer will be joining us third and Long
third and Longhorn right here. You can hear it on Saturday. Mark, Yeah,
you spend time with Alex. Yeah, like just a brilliant dude.
I know Alex since he was in high school, so wow. Yeah,
(12:42):
he's done amazing work and proud of what he's been
able to do. And he's actually working for Flugerville ISD,
where my kids attend, So I know Alex really well.
So let's keep the show going because I went on
my soapbox for a little bit on arch Manning. But
I want you to hear from Coach start from Monday's availability.
(13:03):
And one of the things that we were talking about
is the offensive line. And you know when you go
to a place and it's gonna be loud on Saturday,
but it was loud at the Swamp. And we'll hear
from Danny Davison get his thoughts on that. They were
talking about the offensive line and the rotation in which
(13:23):
Texas has been able to go through. But they also
were talking about using the snap count the clap snap counts,
and sometimes the difficulty is the reason why some of
these guys continue to have false starts and jump off
sides and things like that. But here's coach start talking
about how the left guard reps are determined.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Obviously, practice determines a lot of who plays. You know,
who do we feel is is ready to perform? And
then the flow of the game. You know that, I
didn't think Nick Brooks was going to go out there
and play perfect games first time he's ever played in
a real game left guard. But I think there's there's
there's traits in there, and there's ability in there, and
(14:05):
the growth and practice in there that I think he's
got a very bright future for us.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
There was gonna be growing pains and and we obviously
guard reps are determined.
Speaker 5 (14:14):
Obviously, practice determines a lot of who who plays. You know,
who do we feel is is ready to perform? And
then the flow of the game. You know that that.
I didn't think Nick Brooks was gonna go out there
and play perfect games first time he's ever played in
a real game of left guard. But I think there's
there's there's traits in there, and there's ability in there,
and the growth and practice in there that I think
(14:36):
he's got a very bright future for us. There was
gonna be growing pains and and we obviously lived through
some of those Saturday, but I do think he's got
a bright future.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
We definitely have the silent count.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
We didn't played in this game for a lot of years.
I mean, Michael taff I think this will be his
fifth Red River Rivalry game, and you know I've been.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Practicing, practice it.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
But you also have to understand that there will be
some guys that are out there that haven't participated in
this game. The new transfers, the defensive line, some of
the offensive line guys didn't get a chance to play
in this game last year, but they got to see
the atmosphere of it. I mean, there's nothing like that.
And by the way, I want to thank the folks
(15:21):
over at the Yellow Rose for sponsoring our trip to
Dallas this weekend, as we'll be at bar w on
Friday and then we'll be at the Old Mill in
on Saturday morning. So make sure you come by and
all that courtesy of the great folks at the Yellow Rose.
Make sure you get over there and get that bone
in rid By. That's right this Friday with a side player.
(15:44):
But let's get into that conversation too, because Sark is
in a position now where he has to rally the troops.
He has to get these guys ready and locked in,
and so the start said, the focus is just on us.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
The goals to get to one. I know this week
the y'all state Red River Robberie. I love all aspects
of it. I love it that it's neutral side. I
love that it's in Dallas. I love that it's a
state fairer. I love that both teams are in the
same tunnel. I love that the crowd has split fifty
to fifty. All that being said, we got to focus
on us and it happens to be a heck of
a challenge and in my opinion, the best game in
college football in the regular season.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
This is the best game in college football regular season,
end of the season, postseason besides national championship. But this
game is where legends are made. This game is where
you you can eat and drink for free for a
long time if you go out there and you play well.
(16:41):
And Peter Gardia is one of those guys. He went
four and zero in this ball game. A lot of
people were like, Peter didn't play that great threat, but
he won those fours, he won those ou games.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Give him the hat he showed up. Hand him the hat, yep.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
And so this is this is a big week for
more than just the matchup. This is a big week
for Texas to come out and play at an elite
level because they need this game.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
This is a this is a desperation game.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
If there is any hope of playing for an SEC championship.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
You are being in the twelve or being in the twelve, and.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Those moments that this Texas football team is up against
is where you're gonna find out who's really made for this.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
It's a it's a tough, tough road here.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
I mean, you start looking at their schedule and I
know coach Sark, one game at a time, this is
what we're doing. But when you look at this schedule
moving forward, there's some tough games.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
You got off none none, and it's physical.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
All of these are going to be physical confrontations. You
start with the Red River rivalry, and All State, by
the way, yucky.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
On the road. Night game gonna be tough.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
You go to Mississippi State, it's either gonna be a
afternoon game or an evening game on the road. Then
you come back home and then you gotta play a
team in Vanderbilt who is looking their wounds this week
and gonna be ready to go. And it's an eleven
am start on November the first. So there's a lot
(18:27):
that this team is going to be going through to
to make sure that they stay in the hunt. And
oh yeah, by the way, after you play Vanderbilt, you
get a bye week, and oh there's a team called
Georgia that you gotta go to Athens to go play
as well. You might as well be going to Athens
grease because that is a long haul, bro right, just
(18:50):
just go there, just to get there.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Yeah, it is. It is a.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Man what It's gonna be a definite tough road to
hope for this Texas football team. But I believe that
this team is going to be ready to play. There's
too much experience on the defensive side. Some guys that
have played a lot of snaps that understand what it's
about that offensive line. I know that they're working on
that this week and trying to find.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Some chemistry there.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
And I remember this week too, Arch was asked a
question about the good, bad, and the ugly, and there
was something that he was said that he said that
this is very, very encouraging for their football team, and
I'm I'm liking the leadership that I'm seeing from him
(19:44):
in his time a TURNOI.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Yeah, all of its fixblle. We got a talented group.
Speaker 6 (19:50):
We're young, but we're gonna continue to get better each
week and.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
We're gonna be a tough team to be.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
And you know, you could sit there and say, well,
that didn't really soun that encouraging. That's his demeanor. He's
a laid back guy. You want him to be over
there yelling the whole time. I mean, he's fired up
when he needs to be fired up when he's having success.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Well, this is one of those BYOG games.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Bring your own guts the offensive line and defensive line.
I'm not gonna stop with just saying that the offensive
line has struggles. There were several plays where defensive tackles
were five yards.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
From the line of scrimming.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
You should never if I start going back more than
a yard or two. I'm falling down. I'm calling a
big pile up right there. You're not driving me to
the beach, like they gotta think about how they're affecting
their defense and and doing your jobs.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Sometimes it's not enough.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
Sometimes it's greater to live to fight another day and
just go down and cause the palal up, grab a
handful of grass, turf, whatever you need to do, get down, like,
don't let them get pushed you back, like there's it's
just a lot of things that young people do.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
They're making young people mistakes.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
And then I'm thinking, well, these guys they played before,
but they haven't played for Texas. They haven't played with
the with the vitriol of the opponents wanting to beat Texas.
You getting everybody else's best shot. Listen, man, we gotta
beat them. That's they talking about you before they get here.
(21:43):
And it's not just about numbers. It's about the pride
of not letting the Texas beat you. If you know
somebody has that mentality, it seemed like you would be
inclined to have the same right.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Toughen up. But a cup may.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Well, first off, you can't call him a butter cup
and then try to tell him a tough enough. When
we come back, we're gonna talk to our guy, Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman, get his thoughts of
the swamp and find out what is one of his
favorite memories of the Texas OU rivalry. Right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred the Zummer.
(22:26):
It's Wednesday, so that can only mean one thing. It's
time to talk to our guy, Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman. You can follow him at underscore Danny
Davis and Danny you made that trip.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
To the swamp.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
How How loud was it in the stadium?
Speaker 2 (22:48):
It was really loud.
Speaker 7 (22:49):
I mean, I don't know if anyone's ever been to
a game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, but they have
an open air press box so nothing is muffled. It
was really loud. At one point. I think during the
second half, I was actual kind of getting a little
woozy because it was just so loud and consistent, and
obviously the Florida fans had a lot to cheer about
(23:09):
or are very happy with what was going on in
the field, but it lived up to the building and
there was. There was a bunch of empty seats too,
So I don't know what that place actually sounds like
when it's when it's really loud, but they're doing all
their traditions. They're doing their Tom Petty sing along and
all their chants and stuff like that, and screaming from
kickoff to the final buzzer.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
But it was.
Speaker 7 (23:27):
It was pretty cool, and it's something we don't get
experienced a lot with a closed air press coots at DKR,
which I'm fine with because my head was my head.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
Then what was the most glaring thing to you about
that game and being there and experiencing it up close
and personal from the side of all the penalties and
like the inconsistent play.
Speaker 7 (23:50):
I'm not I know I'm supposed to be the expert
or whatever, but I think anyone in their mother could
tell you it was the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
I mean, that didn't take an expert to see. Narch
was just getting pummeled back.
Speaker 7 (24:01):
Then they couldn't run the ball, and obviously there's a couple,
you know, false starts. I think three different Linman had
a false start and a big holding penalty, and so
I mean it was just the offensive line. I think
everyone in that building knew what the issue was. It
wasn't that it wasn't that hard to come up with.
Question SATs Steve in postgame, it was pretty pretty easy
to see.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Well, as you said here today and think about what
we've seen through the progression of the season for Texas,
there's been a big rotation on that offensive line, and
one of the biggest questions obviously is going to be
left guard. Do you see coach Sark and Kyle Flood
taking the time to really try to hone in on
(24:39):
some core guys and say this is who we're gonna
run with, Because I think the inconsistency lies in the
fact that there's so much rotation, and I know people
are gonna say, well, he's done it every time. Well,
this is a different group, and Jake Majors being not
there is bigger story than anything else to me as
I look at the offensive line.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
Yeah, I mean, I maybe they're rotating because they're not
playing well. I mean, if they had found one of
those guys of Connor Strow or Nick Brooks had a
pretty rough, rough game as a true freshman and you know,
kind of stepped up and taking taking the position I
don't think there'd be a rotation at left guard. I mean,
I don't know exactly what Steve and Kyle are supposed
to do. You know, maybe it's an option to move
Cole Hudson back to left guard and you know, play
(25:23):
Connor Robertson a little bit at center. I mean, Cole
has a lot of experience in left guard and has
played pretty well there over the years. So maybe that's
your solution to get a veteran guy in that position
and let some of those young guys develop a little
bit more. But I'd hope that Steve and Kyle have
not slept this week to figure out that offensive line.
You know, you have a Trevor Gusby that's a consistent,
you have a DJ at Campbell that's a good that's
(25:44):
a consistent right guard, and I think you kind of
kind of figure out with Brandon Baker and just let
it roll. But yeah, that left guard positions obviously been struggled.
You know, try out three guys there. It just hasn't
worked yet. So they better figure something out because I'm
sure if you me and Mark are you talking about
it on your show? The Oklahoma Defensive staff Rep. Fennables
they have a big circle on that, uh, in their
(26:05):
in their film session. Everyone else to Texas has players
figure that out as well. So you know, Kyle and Steve,
you better figure that out.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
Danny.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
I'm I'm always uh. I know we're talking football, but
we always have our basketball.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
They had the availability.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
Was there anything from the availability that you thought was
of news that something we didn't know?
Speaker 7 (26:29):
Well, Marcus, I always say I covered the winning basketball
team of Texas, not the not the men's team.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
So I was not there. I was not there yesterday.
Speaker 7 (26:36):
I'm sure at some point a Viac and his crew
in the next couple of weeks. They have a scrimmage
next weekend, so I'm sure we'll be having a I
sit down with Rory and the crew coming up. But
I was not at the men's availability. Okay, Well, let's
trans this.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
We're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
You can follow him at Underscore. Danny Davis, as you
get ready to go to the Red River d up
at the state Fair, what are what are one of
your favorite memories of being.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
At the State Fair.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
You can tell us about the food, but I want to.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Know about the game. As well.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
Well, you know, I did not grow up in this rivalry.
I'm not a I'm not a Texan. My wife, my
wife is. I mean, she probably has some more memories.
I mean, my my memories all work related. I mean,
we've seen some you know, cool moments, whether it's a
Cameron Dicker hitting that you know, essentially walk up. I
think it was nine seconds lefter. You know Texas, you know,
beating the you know what out of them a couple
(27:33):
of years ago, that forty nine and nothing. I mean,
if you're an Oklahoma fan scene, you know I was
there for the first time Baker beat uh Texas. I
think I was twenty nine to twenty four, his his
junior year, and that was obviously a big moment for him,
a local kid coming back and beating the team that
he so openly despises. So, I mean, you've seen some
some cool moments. You've seen some great performances, whether it's
(27:56):
Xavier Worthy, DeeDee Westbrook for Ceedee Lamb. Everyone remembers that
see Lamb play where he bounced off for forty six
longhorns on the way to the end zone. So yeah,
you've seen some standout performances over the years, all pretty
much offensive performances. I haven't seen a lot of defensive
the defensive standouts, but yeah, it's it's more highlights and obviously,
(28:17):
you know, just seeing the environment and walk around the
fairgrounds and getting your corny dog and all that stuff
that kind of sticks it out to me as a
as a non as a non Texan.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
And that's uh, that's Mark's favorite thing, to the corn
dog and being able to try all the foods that
he I don't even understand how he does it well, I.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
Always we spoke about last week.
Speaker 7 (28:38):
I think Mark's everything is throwing the horns down and
rooting on his son a little sooner and all that.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Danny, you take that back right now. I know where
you work.
Speaker 7 (28:47):
I'm with miss I'm with missus Henry. Now we're we're supporting,
We're supported the boy.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
We're well.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
I can sleep on the catch at home, but Joe House,
I'm not to come over there to get a picking
sign out front saying Danny Dave.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Is a liar. Oh man, this is gonna be a fun,
fun week.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
I do want to ask you this because last week
was the first time that we saw a crack in
the special teams. It was not a good week for
the special teams, and I'm sure again Banks is working
on that as well, because just like you said, Oklahoma
looking at this team, they're looking for every little glitch
(29:29):
that can help them get this win.
Speaker 7 (29:32):
I mean, I'd argue the special teams has some good
all year. I mean, we get the block punt last
years as maybe Jack's worst or the worst worst punt
that had, but I mean they really haven't hit a
pressure kick this season. The returning unit has been. This
is kind of two straight years where there's special teams
just hasn't been what we've seen from you know, a
Jeff Banks coach special teams or really special teams in
(29:55):
general at Texas over the years. So yeah, I mean
I really broken down what went wrong on that on
that block punt too much, but that was obviously pretty
glaring because Jackson pretty consistent and pretty good throughout this
u throughout the season. So I'm sure I don't think
a lot of the Texas coaches were sleeping very well
if they already don't see their families that often, but
(30:16):
I'm sure there is even less family time family time
this week coming out that Florida game. Because everyone had
something to go home in Assassin and try to figure
out what went.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
Wrong exactly exactly.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Well, we'll see how it all plays out this Saturday
to thirty kickoff. Get there early, Danny, so you can
make sure you get into the fairgrounds and get into
the press box, because if you've ever been in there
as a just a patron, it is not fun just
to try to get to your seat.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
But they made some adjustments. We'll see.
Speaker 7 (30:47):
Even if you have a parking pass, there's no guarantee
park state pars. Make sure make sure you get there early.
That's my that's my tip.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
That's mine as well. Appreciate you, brother, and I'll see
you this weekend. Got se y'all all right?
Speaker 2 (30:59):
Be safe There.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
He is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman breaking
it all down when we come back.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Major League Baseball.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Your Yankees got a Paul Smart stay alive, Stay alive.
And the Judge has swung his gavel and the big
Dumper yet that's his nickname. He has something to say too.
Right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred doze great stuff for our guy, Danny Davis
of the Austin American Statesman. You can follow him at underscore.
(31:30):
Danny Davis coming up at the top of the hour.
We'll have former Sooner Chicago Bear and Kate Town went
to Ellison, same high school I went to. Tommy Harris
will be joining us to talk about the Red River rivalry,
but right now I want to talk a little baseball
with my guy Mark Henry. Last night, the Yankees had
(31:52):
their backs up go. They were losing to the Blue
Jays six to you know three, and the one gentleman,
All Rise, decided to show up and introduce himself to
the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Just rite pitch.
Speaker 6 (32:12):
It's a time timeline, what's experience, This moment's time.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
So they let him breathe. They let it breathe.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
If I'm gonna tell you so, I'm gonna tell you
a little story about five minutes before that. It's six
y three and I'm sitting there at the highest level
of pistivity that you can achieve, been there, and I
turned the channel. I'm not I'm not watching no more.
But you know that phandom where like it touched you
(33:09):
on the shoulder. And I turned back and I'm watching
and I see Judge walking to the plane and I'm like, bro,
you have got to do something in this series.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
And he hit that hard and I was like, oh,
it's gonna go.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
Found and it hit and doing then it changed the
complexity of the way that the team approached the plate.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Everybody else had.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
Swag after that, it looked different when you saw guys
walking they were swinging a bat like, oh yeah, I'm
finna get it hit right right, Like where was that
at the whole game? But that's why you needed your man,
your your leader, the captain the sea on his chest,
to show up in a big moment, because when he arrives,
(33:58):
everybody arrives. And that's exactly what happened. So they get
to live to fight another day. As they will take
the field today they went. They went on to win
the game nine to six to force another game. They
will play that game tonight at seven o'clock. The Blue
Jays still lead two games to one, because good thing
(34:19):
is they didn't get swept. But I will tell you this,
Vladimir Garero Junior, y'all got to be more careful because
he is on fire. They that's why they ended up
walking him intentionally competitized last night, you should have got
walking every Is there a rule against walking?
Speaker 2 (34:38):
You can welcome every single time? Yeah, man, that might be.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Remember they used to do it in Little lew.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
First.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
Nope, you just go to first. You just go to first.
So that's that. That was a big impactful home run.
And then last night, after a three hour rain delay,
the Mariners handled the Tigers eight to four, and cal
Riley continues to tear the cover off the baseball.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
He SAIDs one the other way.
Speaker 6 (35:06):
Well, struck ball deep lat field and gone rolly. Is
first of the playoffs and it's eight to one, seanle
They are feeling it. Third Marrier home run of the night, fastball.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Up in a way and cal just took it with him.
Oh great pick right there.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
He literally has a shirt that says dump here for
sixty one. Number sixty one could not have been scripted better.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
That's a he's got a sixty two shirt.
Speaker 6 (35:31):
That's for job's that's just impressive operation.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Hey, you got to come to the ballpark prepared and
the fact that the ball landed there one hop and
you get it. And he got a chance to go
backstick backstage, got a chance to go down in the
tunnel and meet cal Riley and give him the baseball,
take a picture with him and show him that he
had a shirt he's got he had multiple shirts on
(35:54):
with sixty one.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
But the best part is said, dump here.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
Yeah, that's the real thing right there. Yes, because I
don't think I'm walking around and say dump anywhere.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
No, not dump here.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
So they continue to lead two games to one. They
will play today starting at two o'clock, So we get
baseball all day long. Today two o'clock clock you have
the Mariners at the Tigers. You also then follow the
Brewers on taking on the Cubs. At four o'clock. The
Brewers are up two games to none. The Dodgers will
(36:31):
close out the night against the Phillies, and the Dodgers
are looking to sweep the Phillies and that game will
be played at eight o'clock tonight. So we get baseball, baseball,
baseball on your Wednesday hump Day. Also make sure you
get a chance to come out and hang out with
myself from AM thirteen hundred to Zone and Hudson from
(36:53):
ninety six seven Kiss FM, as we will be at
Canaan Ables with Stella Rosa tonight enjoying some wine and
you'll get a chance for the last chance to get
a c L tickets. You know a CL is sold
out for the last and this is the last weekend
of it, so you'll get a chance to win uh
(37:15):
some wristbands so you can go to a c L.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Can't help you, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
So let me ask you this, Mark, because being the
Yankee fan that you are, and I know you're gonna
tell me you was right there. You can hear the
stadium and all that stuff, but were you Are you
really looking at this because I talked to a Yankee
fan yesterday and she said, Aaron Boone has to go.
(37:43):
Everybody hate him and he makes decisions I think to
intentionally antagonize us, right like like despite you, Oh that's
what you want?
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Okay, Nope, not doing it. And everybody hate him.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
He's like Reggie Jackson, like he just evokes hate.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
Who hold on now, Reggie. Reggie is a royal pain
in the rear end.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
Oh I know that, But his numbers put you up.
I'm not talking about his numbers, talking about the man sucks.
He's the worst. Just ask my wife. He's the worst. Well,
he looked at him, beat him up the last time
I saw him. Why is that not shocking to me?
(38:27):
Why is that not shocking to me? Listen, So I
threw out a pitch at the Yankee game. Did it bounce?
Speaker 2 (38:32):
No?
Speaker 1 (38:32):
It did not, sir, I have it on video. I'm
just not like that other one. We're not gonna talk
about that about that. But CC Sabbathia was escorting me
around and showing me, hey, man, look, you gotta go
out there and don't don't make it bounce, you know,
just throw it at his face and then you know
(38:53):
he's all the whole stuff. And he said, oh, there's
Reggie Jackson. I said, the hell.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
With Reggie jack a loud as I can say it,
so he can. He turned in something went, oh god,
the reason.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
Why this house meeting is because we just don't feel
safe that you in a house any morning.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
Are you serious?
Speaker 2 (39:12):
I'll feel shafe.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
I don't feel safe no more. Man, That's what That's
what Reggie was feeling. And he said, oh, I see
you met Reggie before.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Mark Henry and his stories got a lot o man.
Speaker 1 (39:28):
When we come back, our number one is in the books.
But when we come back, we're gonna talk to Tommy Harris,
former Oklahoma Sooner, Chicago Bear and Kate Town Legend. That's right,
went to the same high school that I did. And
we'll hear from Alex Okapher at eight seventeen right here
all the morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
(39:49):
The Zone. Welcome back to our number two of the
morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone and our number one. I got on my
soapbox for QB one arch Manning because I'm tired of
people taking shots at him and not letting him grow
as a football player. Also, we listen to coach Stark
(40:11):
talking about the position of left guard and the changes,
and we got a chance to talk to our guy,
Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman, and we got
a chance to hear Mark's story about Reggie Jackson. As
the Yankees win nine to six, they will play tonight
against the Blue Jays at seven o'clock. The Blue Jays
are up two games to one. The Mariners handled the Tigers.
(40:34):
They're up two games to one. They will play at
two o'clock today, and the Brewers and Cubbies will play
at four. Dodgers and Phillies play at eight o'clock tonight.
We are efforting Tommy Harris, you know, so early in
the morning for some of these cats that have been
retired for a while, and he might have had something
(40:55):
else going on, but we'll try to get him on
as well. But we do have Oka for joining us
at eight seventeen. He's part of the third and Longhorn.
He's also done some stuff with the Flugerville isd as
he's working there to make sure Flugerville continues to grow.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
I do want to.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
Give a shout out to the Yellow Rose for sponsoring
our trip up to Dallas. We will be going to
Dallas tomorrow after the show and getting prepared. We will
be at bar w to do the Friday Show or
Friday afternoon show with Craig Way, Cam Parker and a
few guests with myself, Mark Henry, and we will also
(41:37):
be on the fairgrounds at the Old Mill d starting
at eleven thirty, so come over, hang out. We'll have
special guests all weekend long because this.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Is a big weekend.
Speaker 1 (41:49):
This is a huge weekend when you start to look
at the momentum for both of these teams.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
There was some.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
News yesterday venables came up and was asked about his
starting quarterback, John Mattier Matier. There was a report came
out by Pete Thamil that again, I think this is
the smoke screen that we have seen before. I think
this is them trying to coach. Shark said it this week.
(42:18):
He's preparing for two quarterbacks. He's already said that numerous times,
so he's thinking Matier was going to play. They run
the same offense, it's going to be the same effect.
Michael Hawkins Junior is a mobile quarterback that's got more
experience now because last.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
Year when they played against Texas.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
His numbers weren't that great, but he wasn't that bad.
He didn't turn the ball over, he didn't make a
lot of mistakes. He handled Let me see what he did.
He went nineteen of thirty four one hundred and forty
eight yards. He also was their leading rusher in that game.
He ran the ball twenty times, so he had the
ball in his hand thirty nine times to be able
(43:01):
to go out there and make something happen. So this
is going to be a big challenge for this Texas
football team. But the challenge does more with the Oklahoma
defense and Art was asked about his thoughts on the
Oklahoma defense and what the expectations are at trying to
(43:22):
execute against them. We know the numbers when it looks
at Oklahoma. Mark, we talked about it. It don't matter
how good you are, if you're the number one team
in the country or not ranked. When they play each other,
it is a war, right and people just somebody always
rises to the occasion like that. You didn't even you
(43:45):
didn't expect it, but that guy always shows up. Who
is it going to be? For each team? And I
wanted to ask you yesterday, but I figured, you know,
it'd be better.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
To ask you today.
Speaker 1 (43:58):
Who is the guy that you think is gonna step
up and be like, man, where did that come from?
Speaker 4 (44:05):
Well?
Speaker 1 (44:05):
I think it's for Texas, it's still gonna be Anthony
Hill Jr. And Leongo La foul because they have to
make plays and keep this game tight. Those linebackers are
going to be key to be able to run sideline
the sideline and stabilizing everything. Oklahoma's passing game deep passing
game is not what we thought it was going to
be coming into the season. They're still trying to search
(44:27):
for that too. But the one thing is they got
people the materier. If he plays, he runs, and you
got to punish him every time. And you know that
his hand is hurt, so you're trying to punch the
ball off. If you happen to punch his hand, you
just happen to punch his hand. I mean, this is you.
You knew what it was when you came back to
the game. You knew the risk you were gonna take
(44:47):
by coming back into the game.
Speaker 2 (44:49):
Can I ask you a question? Sure? Did you did
you wear an ones today? Why? Because you woke up
and chose violence.
Speaker 1 (44:57):
I'm he got that type of head. I'm wearing black
Nike Todays Timblings with the Black Sox.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
Yeah, I'm just Look, this is a big week. Man.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
You're You're not just hardball, you are hard core hards today. Man, Look,
I'm here for victories and that's all I'm here for.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
And whatever by any hard by any means can get
in trouble.
Speaker 1 (45:30):
I'm trying not to work. But here's sorry, here's arts
on the thoughts of the youth. I mean the Oklahoma defense,
they play really hard, move move all over the place,
and they're well coached. Show and the fact to the
other part of it is where is the weakness that
you have seen on this Oklahoma defense? Where's the weakness
(45:52):
that you have seen on this ou defense? While you're
watching film and the expectations.
Speaker 2 (45:58):
I don't know, No, no, you.
Speaker 1 (46:09):
Don't know what the week is. No, I gotta watch
more film. I gotta go back and look at it.
But but you you you understand that this team is
in a position that they haven't been in before. And
what I mean by that this is a new squad.
This isn't last year's squad exactly. So we'll figure out
(46:31):
what's gonna happen then. But this is a tough look
for everybody. This is going to be a tough conversation
for everybody this week. You heard Danny Davis talk about it.
There's not a coach that slept well this week, because
I'm sure that coach sark has like y'all got some
splaining to do. Yeah, y'all need to burn the midnight
all and figure this out next week because.
Speaker 2 (46:54):
I don't think they're gonna fire me.
Speaker 1 (46:56):
Man, ain't nobody getting fired Mark, nobody him fired off.
Hey put a pin in that market, Please please put
a pit in that dude, we are sitting here two
years back to back college football playoffs.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
Listen, I'm not hating.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
I'm just letting you know that there's always a scapegoat and.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
Something you don't want to be him. You don't want
to be count Oh my god. And I'll tell you
what special teams wise.
Speaker 1 (47:26):
The punter lackadaisically took his approach to punting the ball
and then he ended up getting blocked. I guarantee you
he watched that play fifty times.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
Look at your feet.
Speaker 1 (47:42):
That's my coach was always about his about the feet,
where's the where's the urgency? You want to kick it right?
Like you got so much time the up blockers. The
up blockers had their hands on their knees. How can
you block somebody with your hands down? I think that's
where you need to focus. I don't think you need
to focus on the punter. The fact that they didn't
(48:05):
block anybody is how the punter who has been doing
it all season long got his punt block. They didn't
block anybody. Yeah, he didn't have a chance. He didn't
have a chance.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
It's a team sport, and he.
Speaker 1 (48:20):
Did not He didn't help with the team, did not help.
Speaker 2 (48:24):
He did not help the team very slow in that delivery.
I mean, I hear you, but I'm not gonna well.
Speaker 1 (48:31):
I mean, he's been one of the best punters in
the count you know, but like everybody make mistakes. The
sense of urge, you got comfortable. Oh, I'm just they
gonna block it. No, do your job.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
With hate. Okay, I hear you, I hear you.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
But this football team in Texas, the Texas football team,
I believe, is going to be ready to play. I
think we're gonna see a different version of this team.
But the biggest story is are they going to be
able to run the football? And it's not running the
football with Arch Manning. Yes, Arch will run the football
because he'll pull it down and he'll go make a play.
(49:12):
But you can't always just sit there and make it
your quarterback running. Because Sark said it, we don't major
in QB runs. But yet here we are. Here's where
Texas is. And again I said it at the opening
of the show, and I'll say it right now. You
have to incorporate quick throws for this young man that
(49:34):
I believe that's the only way that this thing is
gonna open up.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
That's the secret sauce.
Speaker 1 (49:39):
I think that's the only way that down the field
throws and everything else that he loves to do is
going to be effective. It'll slow the rush down too,
because guys will realize they're not gonna get there correct
and then you start running his own you still start
running more man.
Speaker 2 (49:56):
Yep, yep. So we'll we'll definitely attention to this man.
Speaker 1 (50:02):
Look putting an asterisk by K Town's name for now
on a reliability. Ktown knows when we say we're gonna
do something, we do it. Tommy didn't show up today,
but he did text me just now and said, my bad.
Can we do tomorrow? So we'll do tomorrow. We'll do
eight o'clock. We'll get one more shot at this though
(50:22):
that'll be the last shot at Tommy. Now, Tommy's Ktown.
We're gonna get him one more shot at it. But
coming up next Fluckerville's on Alex Okaford will be joining
us to talk all things Texas Longhorns, And of course
we got to ask him what was his biggest.
Speaker 2 (50:40):
Moment at the Red River rivalry? Right here on the
morning no on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 1 (51:07):
Mark Henry Horn, you're used to seeing them on the
grid iron. But now you get a chance to see
him holding it down with the crew from Third and Longhorn,
which you could hear right before our pregame show every Saturday.
Speaker 2 (51:22):
It's our guy, Alex Okafer.
Speaker 1 (51:25):
You knew him in the NFL and you knew him
on that field. Now he's busting it out with his chops.
What's happening, Alex? How you doing, buddy?
Speaker 4 (51:35):
I'm doing well. I appreciate y'all fellers for having me.
Speaker 1 (51:37):
We appreciate you taking the time to come on with
us because we know what this week is to the
players that are on the field now.
Speaker 2 (51:45):
But what is this when you were What is this
to you? This week?
Speaker 8 (51:50):
Mean?
Speaker 9 (51:51):
Overall, we're talking about the Red River rivalry and just
kind of looking back on my playing career. I look
back at this the dynamic teams that both Texas and
Oklahoma have rolled out on the field, and when I
was in the program, I was going against guys like
Sam Bradford, Trent Williams, Jermaine Gresham, DeMarco Murray, guys like that,
(52:14):
and then just to kind of see how the evolution
of this robbery has played out, It's it's to me
the best sports, the best environment in all of sports.
And I mean it's that any given Sunday mentality, no
matter what the rankings is, coming into this game, you
don't know what you're gonna get.
Speaker 1 (52:30):
Give us the experience of coming out of that tunnel
and your opponent is standing right next to you, and
you run out and you you hit the open air,
you leave the tunnel, and you come out into the
crowd like paint the picture for us.
Speaker 9 (52:48):
Yeah, No, it's unreal and it's to this day, it's
still crazy that they make both teams come out the
same tunnel. But but I think it even adds to
the aspect of the robbery because there's bad blood for sure.
Speaker 4 (52:58):
I mean there's the level of repe but there's definitely
bad blood.
Speaker 9 (53:01):
And the fact that we're both coming out the same tunnel,
the fact that we're both barking at each other while
leaving the tunnel just.
Speaker 4 (53:08):
Adds the extra layer of energy to this rivalry.
Speaker 9 (53:12):
And then once you run out on the field and
see the split crowd, where else in sports.
Speaker 2 (53:17):
Are you're gonna get something like that.
Speaker 9 (53:18):
So this is one of those games where, no matter
if you're on Texas or Oklahoma, you just cherish games
like this because it's one of those rare sports environments that.
Speaker 4 (53:27):
You don't see on the regular.
Speaker 1 (53:29):
And the one thing that I continue to look at, too, Alex,
is when you walk out, and you said it perfectly,
When you walk out, you see it split fifty to fifty.
You don't know if there was a big play by
your team or a big play by their team, because
the sound remains the same the entire game. So it's
always been an interesting game for me because there's so
(53:52):
much house divided type of situation as we have right
here with Mark Henry. Mark Henry's son is now on
the Oklahoma Centers football team, but Mark says Texas gonna
win by thirty and he don't even care.
Speaker 9 (54:10):
I respect and I appreciate the colon opinion by Mark.
Speaker 2 (54:14):
Right there.
Speaker 9 (54:19):
I could imagine you you got Texas winning by thirty.
I'm sure you talk about a split household. I'm sure
your household is the epitome of that. I'm right, I
can imagine. I'm right there with you, though.
Speaker 8 (54:36):
Man.
Speaker 9 (54:36):
I was speaking on this game on our podcast started
Longhorn earlier this week, and you know, Oklahoma's offense is
just like Damn. Why did they have to play that
poorly right the week right before we get to play them?
Why did they have to put out a piss poor
performance like that defensively because they know what type of
defense we tried out there for the past couple of years,
(54:57):
and they know what the performance like we had against.
Speaker 4 (54:59):
Florida there going to get our best version this upcoming week.
Speaker 9 (55:02):
So I mean that leads me to believe that that
Texas is coming ready for this matchup.
Speaker 2 (55:07):
Well, it's funny that you said that.
Speaker 1 (55:08):
We're talking to Alex Okaferm, former Texas longhorn, former Kansas
City chief and now one of the main characters on
Third and Longhorns podcast, doing a great job with that
crew over there. But I wanted to ask you that
because you know, in some situations, you'll look at the
game and you see what happened last weekend, and you
(55:28):
always here, don't let one loss lead to another. But
the one thing about it is this right here this week.
It couldn't have been timed any better because your focus
against this opponent locks you right back in.
Speaker 2 (55:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (55:43):
Absolutely, and that's exactly what it is. It's a week
tweek game and Oklahoma knows that they're going to get
a pissed off version of this Texas team, and it's
right on time because you got the Red River environment
on top of that.
Speaker 4 (55:56):
So, like you said, with the new format of college.
Speaker 9 (56:00):
Football in the in the playoffs, one loss doesn't necessarily
mean you're out of this thing. And if you can
get a big win against a top ten opponent like this,
this will put you right back in the mix and
everything will still be right in front of you in
terms of achieving your goals if you get a win
like this.
Speaker 1 (56:16):
Alex Harts brought up the fact that you're on third
and Longhorm, but you know, I'm, I'm. We both spoke
at an event at Mike Adams School up in I
guess that's the Round Rock ISD. It's it's kindly like, uh,
what what is your role in that in that district?
Speaker 9 (56:40):
Yeah, So, first of all, shout out coach Mike Adams
over there doing an excellent job within the Flugerville is
SD school district. Also a legend from the University of Texas,
A shout out him.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
It's a great dude, and.
Speaker 9 (56:52):
Fact I appreciate what he's doing for our students over
here in Flickerville. But for me personally, once I finished
playing in the league, I was transitioning and I didn't
have the podcast that we have going on right now,
so I needed something to put my time into. And
I told myself, I don't know what I want to
do after I'm done playing, but for the meantime, I
do want to get be in the community and be
(57:13):
around these kids. So went back home, the Flugerville ran
for the school board, got the seat, and now I'm
serving a three year term for the Flugerville Independent School Board.
Speaker 1 (57:24):
Out here, Yeah, we appreciate what you're doing too, especially
for somebody like myself who's part of that school district
with my two kids that go to Hendrickson and Highland Park,
So we appreciate everything that you're doing for that area.
But I wanted to ask you this too, because you know,
this is one of those things where everybody's being questioned
(57:45):
this week, the offensive line, the defensive line being pushed back.
Speaker 2 (57:49):
When you're in practice after.
Speaker 1 (57:51):
A tough, tough week, what is practice like when you
both know that y'all need to get better.
Speaker 9 (58:02):
It's gonna be it's a week for these guys, especially
when you get physically dominated like we did last week.
It's one thing to go out there and have missed
assignments or sometimes.
Speaker 4 (58:12):
The lack of effort.
Speaker 9 (58:14):
You can fix that up easily, but when you have
a lack of physicality, that's alarming and you gotta get
that fixed immediately. So that tells me that they're going
to have a very physical and demanding practice or multiple
physical and demanding practices this week, and sarcasts to clean
that up. We've got to be better at the point
of the tech offensively and defensively. Offensively, we've got to
(58:36):
stay on blocks and move bodies off the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (58:39):
Defensively, it's vice versa.
Speaker 9 (58:41):
We got to strike and we got to get off
blocks and use our hands and make tackles behind the
line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (58:46):
And it's hard to get that done when you're not
in pads. And I know.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
We're at the teeth of this thing.
Speaker 9 (58:51):
We're right in the middle of the season and everybody's hurting,
everybody's tired, But you still got to get it about
these players, especially when there's a lack of of violence
being shown on the field. So to answer your question,
I expect some very physical practices this week. I expect
Stark to demand greatness from his players this week, and
I expect to see a different.
Speaker 4 (59:10):
Product rolled out there this week and against Oklahoma.
Speaker 1 (59:13):
What do you think about the coaching schemes and what
the way that Texas didn't really have a flow. I
think a lot of that was because of not having
a running game. But what do you think that they
can do to correct that?
Speaker 9 (59:27):
Yeah, I mean you hit it right on the head
in terms of not having a rushing attack. If you
take away archers rush yards for the game, we had
fifteen yards on the ground. That's you're not beating anybody
like that. And the way it affected the game. You
see Arch Manning and DJ Lagway two similar players, two
young prospects that have underperformed this year. Well, we go
(59:49):
out there against Florida and Lagway looked like a completely
different player because he had that running game to lean on. Well,
we need to provide that for Arch and you're asking
how do we get that done?
Speaker 4 (59:58):
Well, I'm not sure CJ.
Speaker 9 (59:59):
Baxter will back this week, but if he is back
this week, I think that'll add a component to this
Russian attack that we haven't seen since the beginning of
the season. I think he adds a nice physical element
to Trey Wisner's finesse a little bit also too, I'd
like to see I'd like to see some more gap
scheme runs from this team known for having a zone scheme,
an outside zone scheme, and that works. That works for
(01:00:22):
guys like Djon, Jonathan Brooks, Roshawn, guys like that. But
if you want to come downhill and send a message
and really start moving bodies off the line of scrimmage,
I need a gap scheme. I need you to start
start moving people with double teams. I need those power
plays to show up. I need cameras to show up.
So I would hope they'd add a few more layers
to this Russian attack and not just stick to the
(01:00:44):
predominant outside zone scheme.
Speaker 2 (01:00:46):
But we'll see.
Speaker 1 (01:00:48):
Well, it's funny that you say that, because one of
the things that I was talking about earlier in the
show was trying to get back to the quick game
as well. If that line is having a tough time,
your boy Rob Babers used to always talk about it,
quick game, quick game, quick game, get the ball out
of his hand and get the ball to the playmakers,
And that too will also slow down this off I
(01:01:08):
mean this defensive pass rush that we've seen the last
couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (01:01:13):
Yeah, and that's an excellent point.
Speaker 9 (01:01:14):
And it's a little surprising that we haven't seen much
of the quick game early in the season because for
the three years we had quinn Ewers, that was the
basis of this offense. What really got us going was
the RPO game, the quick strikes, the manufacturer touches, the
screen games, and we haven't seen any of that for Arch.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
Every time Arch rolls.
Speaker 9 (01:01:34):
Out of there on the field, it looks like he's
fighting for his life and every play is a struggle.
Speaker 2 (01:01:38):
So I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (01:01:39):
I would like to see us get some easy looks
for him to get going.
Speaker 9 (01:01:43):
That's one of the topics that I'm a little confused
on and I'm not sure why it's not appearing more
and more on tape, especially when we got guys like
DeAndre Moore and Ryan Nibley, guys that you know can
get some yak after the catch once they get the
ball in their hands.
Speaker 2 (01:02:00):
Out Man, what a great, great interview.
Speaker 1 (01:02:03):
We appreciate you taking the time and getting up with us.
Make sure you continue to do a great job over
at third and Longhorn. You can hear it always on
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. You can hear their pregame
right before our pregame normally an hour before. This week,
it'll probably be ten thirty. You can hear their pre game.
Speaker 4 (01:02:22):
Thanks Alex, Yes, sir, appreciate y'all fellas any time.
Speaker 1 (01:02:26):
No problem there he is, Alex Okafer. What a great,
great insight right there. When we come back, we're gonna
take it to the big man. We're gonna give him
his world's strongest take right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
You heard the beat drop. That can only mean one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:02:45):
WWE Hall of Famer and world's strongest man, he Mark Henry,
brings you his world's strongest take. Take it away, big
fellow hard Yes, sir, you know what time it is, Thomas.
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man.
Speaker 2 (01:03:05):
My guess back then they didn't know me, but now
I'm hot. They're all on me.
Speaker 1 (01:03:12):
Guys. Oh my gosh. I don't know where the starting is,
but I'm gonna give it a shot. Yesterday I talked
about coach Gannon punching a player, and I said he
needed to get fined, he needed to get suspended. One
(01:03:37):
of those things happened. He got one hundred thousand dollars. Fine, okay,
it's something. But also in the same vein that happened
in the NFL, the owner of Jerry Jones for our
beloved Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (01:03:59):
Also was.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
And the reason he got fined is because Jerry said
that fans were heckling and he meant to just give
them the thumbs up. But it is his brain said
thumbs up, but his hands said f you. He was
(01:04:27):
also fine, Marks, you you have a you have some
sound for the Jerry Jones.
Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
When you gave the Jet fans the finger? Were you
just telling them how many wins they're going to have
this year? Or is that like their IQ?
Speaker 8 (01:04:41):
You know, that was unfortunate that that was a kind
of an exchange with our fans out in front of us.
There was a swarm of Cowboy fans out in front,
not Jet fans, Cowboy fans, and that the entire stadium
was brimming with enthusiasm with Cowboys, and certainly late in
(01:05:02):
the game. And that was in Burton on my part
because I was that was right after we'd made our
last touchdown and we were all excited about There wasn't
any antagonistic issue or anything like that. I just put
up the wrong show on the hand. But that was inadvertently,
and I'm not kidding it was. If you want to
(01:05:25):
call it accidental, we can call it accident. But he
got straight around pretty quick. I've had a chance to
look at it, got straight around pretty quick. But the
intention was thumbs up and then basically pointing at our
fans because everybody was jumping up and down excited.
Speaker 2 (01:05:47):
Yeah, that's some crip keeper stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
If I ever heard in my life I accidentally through
the bird.
Speaker 2 (01:05:53):
I meant the dude the thumbs up, tombs up.
Speaker 1 (01:06:01):
All right, Jerry, listen, if you would have threw the thumb,
if you would have threw the bird, I'd have been like,
all right, Jerry's on his he on some Jerry Jones
staff and I laughed it off.
Speaker 2 (01:06:12):
But don't lie to me.
Speaker 1 (01:06:13):
Don't piss in the wind and tell me it's raining, Jerry,
don't do that. And they find him two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars. So I text you, guys and yesterday
and I said, hey, guys, the fines came in this
week and Jerry Jones got fined two hundred and fifty
(01:06:37):
g for flipping the bird, but a coach hit physically
hit a player and he got one hundred thousand dollars fine. So, kids,
the moral of this story is it's okay to be violent, but.
Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
Dear God, don't throw the bird at somebody. Art We'll
say you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:00):
That's the that's the the other part of this deal,
and that's the part that I was hoping you were
going to get to, was the fact of the disparity
of the fines. Gannon's one hundred thousand dollars for putting
your hands on somebody, and Jerry's is for pointing at
somebody with the finger that you didn't like. So the
(01:07:22):
thing that really bothers me about that is one hundred
thousand dollars for a coach to pop them put his
hands on them.
Speaker 2 (01:07:30):
And of course he apologized. But that's how one hundred
and fifty thousand dollars different. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Of course he apologized. Jerry did too. You heard him.
I didn't mean to do that.
Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
I meant I meant the thumbs up them, but instead
I but.
Speaker 2 (01:07:45):
I told him to come up here. I told him
to come up here if they wanted. So, I just
I just look at.
Speaker 1 (01:07:51):
The disparity of the NFL and the rules and how
they dole out these fines, and what the messaging is
is really becoming something that a lot of folks are
getting disheartened by. It is a change in the narrative
of because I saw somebody say, oh, that's just tough coaching.
(01:08:13):
No it's not not. In this day and age, you
have to join somebody. You don't put your hands on
somebody because like you said yesterday, there would have been
some furniture moving if you put your hands on the
wrong one. And the dude was already distraught because he
knew what he did. He was over that browbeating himself.
Is to where his teammate had to come in exactly
(01:08:36):
ro put his arm around him.
Speaker 2 (01:08:39):
There's going to be another day. It's just it's just
the whole, the whole nonsense of it all.
Speaker 1 (01:08:44):
Where where these types of things continue to be part
of where we have to come in and discuss. We
have to discuss the fact of how poor of the
disparity of certain things happening.
Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
Isn't more about what position and they are as in
Jerry's a team owner and he's a coach.
Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
No, I would prefer it because you're supposed to be
a leader of men. I'm supposed to respect you as
my coach. You put your hands on me. Now, I
get that part of it. But he deserves to be
five to fifty or Jerry needs to be fined less
than too.
Speaker 3 (01:09:22):
Well, that's what I'm saying. Is is just the fact
that Jerry's the owner.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
I get what you're.
Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
Saying, because it's just that the argument that you're presenting
is not fitting. Like they both had egregious issues that happened.
Speaker 2 (01:09:38):
Because a hundred thousand still hurts the coach. I think
it hurts the coach worse. Yeah, I think yeah, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:09:46):
Jerry Jones right off two hundred thousand dollars dinners man. Yeah,
he probably just did that. Now, donated to a charity
of your choice. Just make sure it's in Dallas so
I can get it back right here the morning kicking
the voice again, you heard you know, you rubbing off
(01:10:06):
on me.
Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
I did the voice yesterday and somebody said, what are
you doing? Yeah? How they say it? What are you doing. No, No,
that's not what you said. You said, what are you doing?
Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
You're gonna close out the show and send you to
Dad Patrick. Oh Man, There's some more to these stories,
and we've got Major League.
Speaker 2 (01:10:29):
Baseball and basketball is back, folks.
Speaker 1 (01:10:32):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
I want to give a.
Speaker 1 (01:10:37):
Special shout out to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman,
and of course Alex Okafer of Third and Longhorn, which
you can hear right here on sports Radio AM thirteen
one hundred The Zone. Shout out to Tommy Erris k Town.
I'll give you a reprieve. You get to come on
tomorrow at eight o'clock. We also have to pay off
(01:10:59):
a debt. Titus O'Neil will be joining us again as
Mark Henry gave him the green light to come on
and brag a lot about the victory with the Florida Gators,
So that should be a lot of fun as well.
But right now I'm about to tell you hockey season
is here. The Texas Stars will take on the Grand
(01:11:20):
Rapid Griffins this Friday, October tenth at the h EB
Center in Cedar Park. All you got to do is
get over to AM thirteen hundred the zone and on
the iHeartRadio AP tap that red microphone and leave the
keyword of the day rink. Rink is your keyword of
the day to get a chance to win a four
(01:11:43):
pack of tickets to go see the Texas Stars versus
the Grand Rapid Griffins.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
Last night they saying hockey. Let's do that hockey.
Speaker 1 (01:11:53):
Last night hockey dropped the puck, as they like to say,
and started its season.
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
Yeah, they dropped it. They dropped it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:01):
They was looking for the big dump, like the big dumper,
so they dropped the puck.
Speaker 2 (01:12:06):
And now they are all go for a hockey season.
Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
Do you realize that we will have Major League Baseball,
we will have hockey, we will have football all on
at the same time coming up pretty soon. Not only
will you have all those things starting on Tuesday, we
have fifty straight days of college or of football, fifty
(01:12:37):
straight days of football starting on what's actually starting this weekend,
Because Tuesday night.
Speaker 2 (01:12:45):
You will have it. You'll have made You'll have NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:12:49):
Monday night, you'll have Tuesday. You will have college football. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Wednesday,
just right, it's about to be owning popping. So get
your get your football couch ready, because you got fifty
days of it, don't don't you better take it all together,
(01:13:10):
take it all in because once it's over, it's over. Hey,
that dead period is real. Hey, what are we gonna
do the dead period? We've done it. We take we
did it, We did it. There was something every single
day we made it. We did all of that. There
(01:13:30):
ain't no dead period around here. We got too much
going on. We're gonna have college basketball starting. We're gonna
talk about ants racing. We're gonna talk about the cricket fight.
You must be talking about that at your house, because
you ain't talking about it here.
Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
I don't. I don't think that's something there's on the sidewalk.
Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
No, man, I saw silver fish the other day and
I was trying to figure out why I was there.
Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
You know, we're not talking about that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:13:58):
But I do want to give a shout out to
my little sister, Kimberley. Today is her birthday. We'll happy birthday, Kim.
She probably not listening, but I just still wanted to
tell her how too. I'm sure I'm sure, it's a
it's an interesting week because this Texas oh you weekend,
(01:14:18):
it's something like no other. Last year, Mark Jacob was
sitting next to us because he was there with his
buddy's off the wrestling team, and now he's he talked
about it right there. He spoke it into existence. He said,
I want to I want to experience this. I'm looking
out here. I was like, well, you're not gonna be
(01:14:38):
able to see this out here if you inside, you
ain't gonna see that. You're gonna be inside. You gonna
see people run out there, and it's gonna be part
of it. So now he gets to have that opportunity
to come out of that tunnel to tell you the
stories of the cussouts and what's going on behind the scenes.
So this is this is where again you become a legend.
(01:14:59):
People talk about the fact that Kwan Cosby decleted Holmes
on that crackback block.
Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
Now now he.
Speaker 1 (01:15:07):
Would be probably ejected out of the game, and you
think about you think about what Rod Wright, who is
just inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor, get the
scoop and score and run the whole length of the field.
You got a chance for Oklahoma. You got a chance
to see Roy Williams jump over the top and get.
Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
Chris Simps.
Speaker 1 (01:15:29):
But you got a chance to watch great players do
great things and become immortalized in this game. I just
I just can't wait. Man, I'm so excited. I want
to see who's going to be. It's always one surprise.
I don't know who's gonna be, and I'm just anxious
to get that.
Speaker 2 (01:15:46):
Man, who do you? Who do if you had to
pick somebody?
Speaker 1 (01:15:49):
Because I was asked this question yesterday by a couple
of people, especially our guy Sam Mays, who's a big,
big Oklahoma uh he covers Oklahoma and Oklahoma that he
played at Oklahoma. He asked me who they be, And
I just told you the same thing. It's gonna be
Anthony Hill, and it's going to be Leung Lafoul for
(01:16:10):
Texas and Emmett Mosley's sighting will get big today.
Speaker 2 (01:16:15):
So I'm looking for all of that, man, I'm looking
for all of them.
Speaker 1 (01:16:18):
I'm thinking injuries, Jack injuries or Spencer Shannon. I think
that it's going to be the tight end, end zone,
red zone type of touchdowns, Like one of those guys
might have.
Speaker 2 (01:16:34):
Two, right and if you if you can get the
ball to.
Speaker 1 (01:16:38):
Those guys real fast and let them hop on them.
He's six seven he's six seven hards with his hands
over his head, standing flat footed, I guarantee he's touching
eight and a half given one foot of a jump,
when we know that he can probably jump two feet. Yeah,
(01:17:00):
throw it up there. And the same thing with injuries,
Like the dude is a really good blocker, but please
don't allow him just to block throwing the ball. Well, yeah,
I mean, this is a guy that transferred to the
University of Texas and you want to see his abilities
showcased at this time. He's a game time player, he's
(01:17:22):
a big time player, and he needs that opportunity. And
you know, he's talked about the fact that they've got
but Craig showed me his call sheet and there was
four or five tight ends on that you can't I mean,
it's great to have that you can't play.
Speaker 2 (01:17:38):
All of them.
Speaker 1 (01:17:39):
I mean, let's figure out a way unless you're gonna
go forward tight ends to your point, get some blocking
in there, give you a max protect I don't who knows,
but there are some things that are gonna change. And
I'm sure Coach Sartin and his crew have been working
tirelessly to get this done.
Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
I want to thank Alex for I want to thank
