get into this conversation because yesterday there was some news
(02:22):
on the forty acres. We have been talking about the
possibility of some players entering the transfer portal. That has
happened multiple times, so we will see what ends up
happening with that. Some of the names that jumped out
yesterday was Connor Strow offensive lineman, Aaron Butler wide receiver,
and Santana Wilson secondary free safety and strong safety. He
(02:47):
decided to get into the transfer portal. We'll find out
if there's going to be more. We heard from coach
sart As he talked about the fact that there's gonna
be some of those hard meetings that are going on
with certain players by he heard him talk about it
earlier in the process when Texas was struggling. He had
to make sure that he was recruiting his locker room
(03:08):
to make sure that some of the guys knew that
he wasn't going anywhere when they were talking about NFL.
So there is a lot that goes on with this,
and I'll get your thoughts on that in the second mark.
But he also was he also let go of running
backs coach Chad Scott. Chad Scott was the running back
(03:29):
coach at West Virginia. He came in and replaced the
Shark choice to shur choice. Obviously, did a great job
with the running backs in the room before he went
to the NFL. Now he has Jamier Gibbs and David
Montgomery running crazy up in Detroit. Those guys were talented,
but he's just brought up a little bit more out
of Jamier Gibbs. But you sit there and you start
(03:52):
to think about this Texas running game and what we
saw last year. It was a lot to be desired.
It wasn't as sharp. We were talking about the offensive
line and what was going on with the offensive line,
But then you look at the numbers, and the numbers
don't lie when it comes to what was happening with
this Texas offense.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Well, let's call it Spa to Spain too.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
We talked last year about Oklahoma and all the injuries
that they had at wide receiver, not just the medical room.
They fired the whole medical staff and got new staff.
They replaced the wide receivers coach. Like, there was things
that happened, and then of course you had, you know,
a better season in that department. Same thing with Texas.
(04:35):
You lose your all world running backs coach. And you
see when Jamiir Gibbs scores a touchdown or David Montgomery's score,
and they do that little c celebration.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
That's for coach choice. That's what that is.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
That was what de Short Choice did when he was
the running back at the Cowboys. So they respect when
you got an NF We had two NFL guys. They
give up their own private celebrations and they take on
the celebration of their coach.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
What does that tell you he had He's got an
impact over there.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Yeah, so Texas is gonna have to get another guy
that these running backs believe in.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Well, the one thing that I look at is the
yards per carry from last year's team. Texas rush the
ball for four point three yards per tempt last year.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
This year they're three point nine.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
They don't have a thousand yard back, they don't have
anybody that was actually close to a thousand yards. And
we were talking about the offensive line, and we had
a couple offensive linemen that made All Conference. But you
start to think, Okay, why did some of these guys.
There were times where it looks like they were tiptoeing
through the hole. They weren't ex exploding through the hole.
(05:55):
They weren't getting that one cut down heel type of run.
And now Texas has decided to make a move. But
the question is where are you going? Who are you
going to get Who's going to be the replacement? Are
you going to go back after Stan Drayton, who did
a good job here at the University of Texas. He
possibly could be a name to pay attention to. I
(06:16):
saw a report yesterday that they were talking about a
guy from UCLA that might want to want to come
to the University of Texas.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I'm like, what not not Ucla?
Speaker 1 (06:26):
But you start to look around and you try to
see how these teams look and where they're headed when
it comes to this type of performance. So I'm just
curious to the thoughts and where you believe the help
will come from in that position.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Well, the help is going to come from the portal.
Everybody knows.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Co Sark even alluded to the fact that they were
going to address the offensive line this upcoming year. And
you can't do nothing about this Bowl game. What you
have on your bench is what you're gonna be able
to use and is in that game. But going forward,
(07:08):
people like Connor Stroll, they're having those meetings like he
talked about in the sound that we played yesterday, of
guys that are gonna stay, are gonna go, and they
have to be honest, excuse me and tell guys we're
gonna we're gonna go into the portal and try to
(07:28):
get a somebody that's up you know, maybe all American
at this position. So if you if you want to,
if you want to go, you know there's no heat
right you know, so good luck to you and your
future endeavors. As they say in pro wrestling, when you
get let go. There are a lot of guys that
(07:48):
have been told that they're not gonna play here, and
they have people coming in that they recruited already, they
know that they're coming Texas, or they have a good feeling. Okay,
we were talking to him. He said he wants to
come here. We just got to work out the legalities
(08:09):
and the compensation and now we got an upgrade at
this spot. That's what's going on right now and every
that's why Lane Kiffin was hesitant to leave because he
wanted to. He wanted to coach those guys, but he
also wanted to get ahead of this and get to
(08:29):
wherever he was going to go and start this process
so he would have a quality team next season.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Texas is no different. They're no different.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
They're trying to work out what's going to happen in
the up and coming season. And the guys that you
see leaving are guys that got told that.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
They're not going to be used.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Well, yeah, I mean, I think that's the part of
being the head coach, being the manager, being the guy
that's in charge of the CEO when it's time to
make him move and you see the development is not
happening in the way that it should have, and we're
in a position now where Texas got to win now,
I mean, it's the plan, It's what Texas has been
looking for.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
But you can't. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
I just think a lot of this has to do
with the development part of it. I mean, where are
we lacking in the development because we went from a
lot of guys being developed talent wise, and now all
of a sudden, we got a bunch of guys that
aren't getting an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
To at that position. As specific position that's offense line
and running back.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Wide receiver too, because if you look at what happened
in the wide receiver part and not taking anything away
from what Chris Jackson was able to bring and what
he is bringing to this team.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
Brian Wingo struggled.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
There was a bunch of guys that were struggling early
in the season. Why not give some of those younger
guys an opportunity to go in there?
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Where was the lack of trust?
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Where was that form that to where some of these
guys that are five star, four star talent that you
we recruited, why aren't they progressing? Is it because they
enjoyed Texas nightlife? Is it because Texas is something the
University of Texas brings so many different things that the
work wasn't being put in. I don't know the answers
to that, but when you look at the film you
(10:15):
see certain things as well. But with the running back
part of this, and I misspoke when I was talking
about UCLA, I was meant to say running back coach
from Florida, Jabbar Jaluki and former running backs coach for
South Carolina Markel Blackwell are the guys that they are
looking possibly comeing to the University of Texas. So that's
(10:38):
some insider information that has been out there and they've
been looking at making that replacement. But the biggest story
of it all, obviously is going to be some of
the changes that is happening at the University of Texas.
But the main thing for me, Mark is there was
no explosivity in the running game and they have to
(10:58):
figure out a way to get the running game back.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Because that was the bell cow for so long.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Change is good, don't don't and you and I both
the guys that evolved and changed with the time.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Texas is going to have to do the same.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
And they have guys I think that they recruited and
that they have in the program currently that can.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Get the job done.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
They just need the opportunity and they need to have
the confidence of knowing the system.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Yeah, and so we'll see what coach Stark ends up
what ends up happening, because they're going into the bowl
game without a running backs coach, and we'll see what
happens next. We're just getting started on a game plan Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Addition of the morning.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Kickoff, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman joins US
at seven point thirty four Texas women basketball play tonight.
We'll talk about that, but coming up next, the All
SEC team was announced and who was the one that
got snugged?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Right here on the morning.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Kickoff sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and always
free on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Welcome back to.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
The morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred of the Zone. Coming up at seven thirty four,
we will have our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin
American Statesman, joining us to talk all things Texas Longhorn football,
and of course we gotta talk Texas women's basketball as
they have a big matchup tonight. Well it's not as big,
(12:27):
but it is big because every game on the schedule
is a big schedule.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
Never ever underestimate your union.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
But let's get into the conversation because yesterday the SEC
decided to announce it's all SEC teams and Texas was represented. Well,
eight Longhorns were on all three levels of the SEC team.
First teamers are Colin Simmons, he did a great job.
(12:59):
Trevor Goose offensive lineman, sophomore. Both are sophomores. In senior
defensive back Michael taff were all named to the first team.
Sophomore Ryan Wingo, junior linebacker, Anthony Hill junior who has
decided to join the NFL, and of course Malik Muhammad
(13:22):
the junior was on the second team, and Ryan Nibbling
made second teams. Kick and punk returner DJ Campbell was
named to the All SEC third team. Obviously, you start
to look around and you look at Trey Wisner, you
look at Arch Manning, and you look at a couple
(13:44):
of other players like Leonga Lafoul, guys that ended up
not making the All SEC teams, but kudos to those
that did.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Texas will be playing in Orlando at the.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Cheese at Citrus Bowl on December the thirty. First kickoff
will be at two a clock. You can hear all
the action right here on the home of the Texas
Longhorns sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. If you notice, I
did not mention Arch Manning's name on the All SEC team,
(14:19):
and there's a couple of reasons why I think you
start to look at who the other participants are. First
team quarterback was Diego Pavia first second team quarterback. It
was a tie between Trinidad Chambliss quarterback of Ole miss
who was the Heisman Trophy winner of Division two last year,
(14:43):
Anty Simpson.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
They were tied for.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Second team All Conference, I mean All SEC, and the
third team quarterback All SEC was Gunner Stockton. I'm a
little shocked at the quarterback position because I think that
Marcel Reid should have been included in that conversation. If
you're going to give Gunner Stockton third team, I think
you could have at least given.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Exactly with Marcel Reid.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
So there's some things that are out there and you
start to look at who was on the first team
from Texas A and M. On the defensive side, well,
offensive side, you had Casey Concepcion, who I thought was
one of the most electric football players with the ball
in his hand all season long. He was named All
Purpose Player, he was named wide receiver, and he was
(15:34):
on the kick return team as a specialist on the
second team. So this guy was doing it all. Very
very impressive when you look at what he was able
to do as far as his talent is concerned.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
And we looked at Ryan Nibbler as one of those guys.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
He played running back, he played wide receiver, he played
on special.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Teams, and he did he had some success.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
How you develop him in the offseason as an intricate
part in your offense is gonna be key.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
I think, well, I think he's gonna get a chance
to do that this bowl season too. I mean, I
think that he's gonna get a lot of opportunities to
see where he is going to be most affected by
this team and more most effective for this team. So
they're gonna see what's gonna happen there. But you look
across this area and this conference and you see that
(16:31):
there's a lot of talent that is there.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
We came into the season.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
If you go back to the preseason, Trevor Gooseby was
looked at as a third teamer and here he is
a first team offensive lineman for the SEC.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
He's a guy that will.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Get and has been getting some looks as a possible
first round pick, whether it's middle first, I mean early
in the first middle, or late in the first round.
It would be interesting to see what his thought process is.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
I believe he's going to stay.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
His brother Austin will be on campus coming up pretty
soon too, So having two of the Goosbi's on campus
is probably a family.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Dream.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
To have all of them on the same campus. Makes
it easy for mom and dad may want to just
come and kick it. They got the place to stay,
so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. But
you look at what Colin Simmons was able to do,
and this is a fast track for him as well,
where you start to understand how good this guy truly is.
(17:35):
Felt like he got off to a slow start penalties
and things like that, but his impact was felt all
the way through the football season.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
And he got better every game. And the same thing
with Arch.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
I think some of it is they had a lot
of pressure on them and the pressure started to alleviate
once they started to see okay, I am him and
next season will be well, we'll be talking about them
in a different light next season.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Well, I think for Simmons, I think he would put
the pressure on himself. He was talking about the sack records.
He was trying to go for Arch Manning people put
the pressure on Arch. There was a hype train that
was behind Arch like no others. So there was so
much that was going on. But when you go back
and you look at the numbers for Colin Simmons, he
(18:27):
had thirteen He led Texas with thirteen and a half
tackles for loss. He had eleven sacks, fifteen pressures, three
force fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His eleven sacks ranked
second in the SEC and six in the FBS. With
the force fumbles, I mean, he did everything that he
(18:48):
was for us to do and created a lot of
opportunities for all that were involved on the defensive.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Right.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
And then you look at what Michael taff. You know,
he only got a chance to start ten games of
the twelve this season because he was dealing with injuries.
He was a finalist for the Bullsworth the Trophy and
the All State Warful Trophy. He was a semi finalist
for the Thorp Award. I mean, there were so many
opportunities for this young man, fifth year player period in
(19:19):
fifty three games with thirty six starts while his time
was on the forty acres. But like I said, he
recorded the second most tackles on the team with seventy
had thirty eight solo and obviously he had some interceptions
and some crucial moments for him.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
When you start to think about his.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Career, big shout out to Mookie Man, like he's going
to be missed next season. I'm sure that him mentoring
these younger guys is.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
Gonna, you know, hold well.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
But I'm looking forward to seeing how Jonah develops. And
they're bringing in another safety that is apparently like a thumper,
and so I forget the kid's name, but like I
like the fact when they bring in guys that they
say will hit you, and that's what his.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Calling card is.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
Well, you had mentioned nibbling and what his expectations are.
But a guy that we're still trying to figure out
what is going to happen with him is Malik Muhammad.
I saw some reports that he is trying to figure
out weighing his options about going into the NFL, trying
to figure out where his draft status will look. Look,
I'm telling you right now, he's long enough, he's physical enough.
(20:38):
The only problem that I had is they didn't play
him man to man enough, and I just.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
In the right And that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Like in the NFL, he will probably get more of
an opportunity to be that guy on the island. I
mean he's got to, you know, obviously put on more
weight and be physical on that outside at the point
of contact.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
But for him.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
I just think that he had an opportunity to do
some amazing things after he got the Player of the
week for the game against Oklahoma where he come back
and got those two interceptions and it seemed like everything
was back to where it needed to be. Were some
things that happened that you're like, man, what are we doing?
Like why are some of these things starting to come
down like that? So it's just it's interesting when you
(21:24):
start looking at all these teams and hear him.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
One of the conditions of coming back and assuming the
role that you're already in is will I be able
to play a little bit more?
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Man the man?
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Will I be able to play closer to the line
of scrimmage? That's my strength. I'm waiting on other people
to do things, and it's messing me up.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yeah, he's gonna I mean, there's a lot that these
guys will wing. And that's on the coaching staff, the
players and everybody else that is involved. Who's gonna opt out.
I'm hopeful that we'll have all the answers we're looking
for by the end of the week on who is in
and who is out.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
But I'm telling you who is and.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Danny Davis of the cost American Statesman. He joins us
next right here on the Morning Kickoff Wednesday edition of
it all right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app. Welcome
back to the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It is Wednesday, and that
(22:25):
can only mean one thing. Our weekly visit with our
guy Danny Davis, an American Statesman. You can follow him
at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny let's.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Get right into it. We knew that this time.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Of year, and it's been happening since the end of time,
well since they decided they can let people leave.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Whenever they feel like it.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
The transfer portal has a lot of activity going.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
On with it right now. They just released the.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
Running backs coach, Chad Scott is no longer on the staff,
and change is inevitable in college football nowadays.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
Yeah, I mean, it's no longer to a point where
something happens and there's no really stunning news. I guess
if arts jumped in the portal that that would be
a little bit of a surprise. But you know, even
someone like a you know, CJ.
Speaker 5 (23:20):
Baxter.
Speaker 4 (23:21):
You know, ten years ago that i'd been like breaking news,
we could have filled up an entire segment just talking
about CJ deciding to leave or whatever. But I mean,
this is kind of part of life, you know. It's
you know, these kids have different reasons for wanting to
move on and do what's best for them.
Speaker 5 (23:38):
And you know, I don't think any of these decisions
are made lightly.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
They're made with a lot of you know, thought and
prayer and all that stuff and talking to family and
talking to coaches. And sometimes it's you know, it's it's
Texas say and move on, or sometimes it's these players
deciding they need something different. But I just think it's
words at a point where the thought of a Michael
after someone saying four or five years out of school,
(24:03):
it's just it's very few and far between me and
senior Knight at this point. It's almost walk on and
transfers at this point. But you know, it just it
is what it is in college sports these days. And
you know, good for the players for finding something that's
a situation that's more comfortable for them.
Speaker 5 (24:18):
And in Texas, they're gonna be fine.
Speaker 4 (24:21):
They're gonna go find some people who are leaving their
programs and uh, you know, restock their shelves.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
But it is what it is, Danny. Once upon a time,
it was it was the talent was the bad guy.
The player was the bad guy. And now with this
new NIO system more like a college free agency, Uh,
the player doesn't look so bad when they leave and
go to possibly greened pastors. Uh do you feel like
(24:49):
that's a narrative that you know, we we're we're seeing
and going to see continuously.
Speaker 4 (24:57):
I think that's probably just who you talk to. I
think if you talk to rational adults who don't treat
these you know, young black men like they work for them,
or that they're that we're back in the mid eighteen hundreds,
I think people are accepting of it. But I'm sure
if we jump on a message board for any college,
(25:19):
any program, any sport, you know, there's people that are
upset that people leave. I mean, you know there's probably
people still upset that there was you know, three women's
basketball four women's basketball players that left this past offseason
for Texas, even though they all had good reasons for leaving.
I mean it's uh, you know that people get kind
of irrational when it comes to these things and are
(25:41):
less understanding. I think the general consensus is a little
bit more forgiving is the wrong word, but more sympathetic,
more sympathetic to the players in twenty twenty five. But
there's always gonna be some people who think that, you know,
the university owns these players and that they owe them.
You have four years and uh, you know, every everything
(26:01):
they got, and that's just not what is anymore. But
once again, those same people who are upset their play
players are leaving are never upset when a player just
has to transfer to Texas because that's cool, right, That's
that's that's the right way to do things.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
But it is what it is. That's never going to change.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
But hopefully more people will be more accepted, which I
think is kind of general consistent.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
I don't think people really cared that much anymore. Well,
like I said, it becomes the norm. Now, this is
the this is what happens across the nation. You see
it now with the coaches making their moves. You see
it with position coaches making moves, and of course you
see it with players. And speaking of position coaches, obviously
this was a down year in the running back room.
(26:41):
We can put it on the injuries that we're in there.
We can put it on the offensive line. But the
fact of the matter is Texas regressed in so many
different areas in the running game that I guess coach
felt like.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
There needed to be a change.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
But what do you do to elevate the in back
room again, especially when you're losing a CJ. Baxter and
and Jarret Gibson and probably lose some more.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Yeah, I mean, I don't mean, I don't really necessarily
think this is a Chad Scott problem. There probably needed
to be a fall guy, and he's the easy, easy
fall guy here, you know, the new guy who doesn't
really have much ties to the staff or or stark
this room. But I mean a lot of things went
wrong for this room. I don't think it's because quin
Travian Weisner or CJ. Baxter or less talented this year
(27:30):
than they were a year ago in trace case, a
few years ago in CJ's case. But you have some
of these injuries, you have an offensive line that just
was not good this year. You just have some general
aggressions and this is the year you get. So I mean,
I assume Texas goes out and he tries to recruit
at least one more running back out of the portal.
They need to obviously do a lot of work on
that offensive line, and we'll see if the new coach
(27:51):
that they get in here can kind of, you know,
infuse some light into that room or maybe give Steve
some more ideas when it comes to calling and calling plays,
because I mean that's a collaborative effort as well. And
we'll see what it looks like this year. But some
change probably needed to happen after this kind of a
disaster every year in the run game, and it happened. Yeah,
definitely do. We're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin
(28:13):
American Statesman. You can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis
and Danny obviously, Texas is going to the cheese At Bowl.
Get ready for Orlando, Buddy, I got the aenerary now,
so we're good. But you know, obviously it's a disappointing destination.
And I'm assuming there may be some opt outs. I'm
(28:34):
assuming there may be some guys that are our probably
coach Shark may not want them to play in this game.
But looking at it, ten wins on your resume looks better.
Than a nine to four season, correct, of course. I
mean there's still some things to be gained from a
bowl game, whether or not it's disappointing or not. I mean,
(28:55):
there's some teams going into a bowl game with a
six and six record, and there's still some and the
gain from finishing the season on a high note, or
even if you don't win a bowl game, from just
finishing your season strong, whether that's at practice, whether that's
you know, in the bowl game, whether it's coaches gain
some more evaluations, can to look at some of the
younger players may not have played as much during the
regular season. There's plenty to be gained, even though it's
(29:17):
not what people expected. I'll be interested to see what
the turnout is in Orlando, Texas from Texas fans who
were you know, saving for I think saving and go
to Tampa later later in the year. That's or later
in the year. But you know, there there's stuff. This
is not a lost season in winning ten games. It
is definitely not not anything to you know, ignore, but
(29:41):
it isn't what this Texas team expected. And hopefully if
you're a Texas fan, this can service some kind of
motivation or a foundational piece to what you hope is
a good run next year.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Danny.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
I heard a sports writer here in all and say that,
you know, Texas win and listed ten games, you know
is a field season.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
I don't believe that. What do you believe.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
I mean this Texas team. I mean, I think it
just depends on your definition of failure. I mean, let's
not get it twisted. This is not a successful season.
And this is a season that had national championship expectations.
This is a season that did not match what you
did the last two years. I mean, I don't think
we need to sugarcoat it and say that this was
(30:26):
a great a great year and things were awesome and
you know, let's all hold hands and skip into the future.
But I mean failure is also a very big word.
I mean, we've seen some failures at Texas. We've lived
through the Charlie Strong era. We've lived through some you know,
my numbing experiences of Tom Herman. We lived through the
(30:47):
five and seven season with Steve. I mean those are
more failures than you know, a possible ten win or
nine win season under Stark.
Speaker 5 (30:53):
But this also wasn't successful.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
I mean, I think there's a way to balance balance
the two and not get too over dramatic with both
with with with both words.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
But failure.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
Now you in the finish in the top fifteen and
possibly win ten games. I mean, let's also be a
little bit realistic with that. But it's it's it's disappointing,
it's underachieving, it's it's not successful. But two things that
two things can be true at the same time.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
No doubt.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Before we let you go, Before we let you go,
we want to talk a little bit of Texas women's basketball.
They're on the floor tonight in Edinburgh taking on ut
R GV. Big games from big players here lately, and
you get an opportunity.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
To see some growth.
Speaker 1 (31:36):
Do you have any update on Alijah, crump or or
Preston and when they may be coming back?
Speaker 4 (31:44):
Vic said on Sunday when it was our last game Sunday,
but he didn't expecting them to play on Wednesday. Alias
still in her boots. I think she's probably a way
a ways away. Breed is out of her boot and
I mean, if you've watched Front the side Line recently,
does it looked like her that much? She's sprinting up
(32:05):
and down and a couple of weeks ago by Teddy
vertash she was diving into the Teddy Bear Teddybear piles.
So I mean, i'd imagine she's she's getting she's getting
pretty close. And now Ashton, they kind of had a
late November early December timeline for her, so she's probably
getting closer to So we'll see in the Baylor game.
I'm sir, Dick would love if he could have, you know,
(32:26):
even if it's ten minutes from Bree as she gets
herself back to you know, he's a little stress off Ferrari,
a little stress off Madison, But I'd imagine Bree's probably
the one we see studist, Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Well, there he is our guy, Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman. Make sure you follow him at underscore,
Danny Davis, make sure you get your travel plans done.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
Danny, I'm booked, I'm ready to go. We'll see, we'll
see all in Orlando.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
There he is, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
When we come back, we'll continue the conversations. Yes, we
will talk Texas women's basketball and we'll get some thoughts
on what the expectations are tonight and make sure you
tune in.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
I might give you a chance to win a pair
of tickets. I don't know. Let's stick around right here on.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
The morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred to
zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app. Welcome back
to the morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The z all good stuff from Danny Davis
of the Austin American Statesman as he broke it down
and was very blunt and honest about the season and
where Texas needs to go right now. I want to
(33:33):
give you a chance to win a pair of tickets
to go see the Texas men's basketball team December the
sixteenth as they take on Lemoyne. And the keyword of
the day, But you got to get over to the
iHeartRadio app. Tap that read microphone will leave the keyword
of the day weave. Weave is your keyword of the
day for a chance to get a pair of tickets
(33:54):
to go see Texas basketball take on Lamoine December the
sixteenth at the Moody Center. Be listening all week and
all day long, as you'll get a chance to win
a pair of tickets all week long, whether it's on
this show or the voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig
Way As he will be giving away tickets to or
(34:15):
Jake Herman, whoever sit in because Craig It will be
in the valley tonight. As Texas women will take on
ut RGV and they don't normally make this trip down
to the valley, but this is given an opportunity for
those that support Texas women's basketball from the valley and
get a chance to see them up close and personal.
(34:36):
You can hear all the action right here on AM
thirteen hundred. The zone pregame starts at six point fifteen,
with the tip happening at six point thirty.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
Ar Ja, I watched last night the competition.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
I always try my best to get an educated idea
of what Texas is facing and watching Connecticut last night
for Texas men, for Texas me in for watching them
watching Connecticut play Florida, Texas is gonna have to press them.
(35:12):
That was the only thing that I saw they worked
against them. If they get into a half court post
of game, their elite. They have guards that can get
their own shot. They run a lot of screening roll
and they're effective with it. Because they have low post presence,
like you gotta press them.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
But in Connecticut is sitting at number five. They will
be taking on Texas Friday at seven pm. You can
hear the game right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred the Zone. Also, we'll be able to hear from
coach Sean Miller tomorrow because he has media availability today
before they hit the road. And you talking about Connecticut
(35:54):
obviously it's the next game. But the thing that Texas
needs to understand is Florida's got big men, Order's got
guys that can take up a lot of space in
that paint, and they're a very physical basketball team. Texas
doesn't play Florida until February the fifteenth, I mean February
the twenty fifth. But the fact that the matter is
that's a physical basketball team that knows exactly who they
(36:17):
are and they don't look like they're hesitant in any
shape or form on how they attack the rem.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
Yeah, and just finally, so hard.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
You know that if you have weapons, you use those.
You play to your strength, you don't play to your weakness.
So you know, if you're an inside post present team
like them, you're not gonna shoot a lot of threes,
like Texas is still trying to figure out who they are.
But the one thing that always travels is defense, and
(36:49):
if you press them, you're going to force turnovers and
you might be able to get some easy scores. That
was my assessment of watching them offensive watching Connecticut offensively,
disrupt them and you have a chance.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
To win the game.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
Well, they ended up winning that game last night and
come from behind fashion. They were very consistent. They're very tough,
they're very physical, They're a big East team, they're national
championship coach. There's a lot that you look at when
you see this team on Connecticut. But Texas needs to
get locked in. But tonight the women will be taking
(37:28):
on ut RGV. As I said, it's not very often
that a team like Texas will go into a place
like ut RGV go down to the Valley, but it
is part of the Texas system and it's an opportunity
for those that support the University of Texas from the
Valley that will get a chance to come to a
game and see them up close in person.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
They've better call the Cavy because Texas is going down
there on a heater. They have knocked off some of
the top teams, the number three, the number two, Like
they're assassinating really good teams, so.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
They better be locked in down there. Yeah, there's this.
This is going to be a good test for them.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
And what I mean by test going on the road
being able to play and make things happen. So we'll
see what ends up happening with the Texas Longhorn Women.
Coming up next, our number one is in the books.
Coming up at the top of the hour, we will
be talking in fl We'll also hear from Schottenheimer talking
about what's going on with George Pickens, how do we
(38:33):
get him going. We'll also talk NBA. The Emeritus NBA
Cup is being played. Women will win, be be back
and we'll okay see lose again. And we'll also hear
from lifetime Longhorn Michael Huff as he was inducted into
the College Football Hall of Fame last night. All right
(38:54):
here in our number two of the Morning Kickoff on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and always on
the iHeartRadio app. Welcome back to our number two of
the morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone Special Shout out to our guy Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman, as he breaks it
(39:14):
down like no other. He will be making that trip too.
Guess where Orlando. Let's see if Mickey is in the
house and see what happens there. But I do want
to talk about this because you know the NFL and
his power rankings.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
We talked about it yesterday eight o'clock hour.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
We talked a little bit about putting dirt on the
Kansas City Chiefs, and Mark has been waiting on that
moment for quite some times. But they're finding a way.
There's still a percentage chance, so we can't just put
them in the dirt and put the dirt off. Come on,
they got percentage chances. So I'm not gonna say that
(39:56):
it is over, but it is definitely getting close to
being and over.
Speaker 3 (40:01):
The fat lady is over there clearing her throat. Yeah
she's over there.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
What was that DJ what was his name, DJ Coho
where he was like, let me climb out. Yeah, they
were over there trying to get that done. But here
here is where I am looking at all of this.
With these teams, you start to look at who can
actually get into the playoffs that AFC. You got Buffalo
(40:27):
that is trying to figure out if they're back into
the mix, if they're going to be part of the conversation.
But you look at the Rams and the Rams and
what they have been able to do in the NFC
that NFC West is one of the best leagues in football,
excluding excluding Arizona Cardinals. But you look at the Rams.
(40:51):
The Rams are ten and three. You look at the Seahawks,
they are ten and three. You look at the AFC West,
You look at what the Broncos have been able to
do as the number one They are the number one
seed in the in the AFC.
Speaker 3 (41:06):
Who would have thought that?
Speaker 1 (41:07):
Between them and the Patriots, which we talked a little
bit about yesterday. Another team that continues to impress after
their narrow win against the Chicago Bears was the Green
Bay Packers. Caleb Williams went Caleb Williams in the red
zone on that last pass, and I was like, his
body was going so far towards the sideline that if
(41:30):
he turns up the field and squares his shoulders up,
he throws that ball to the back corner to the pipeline,
that's a touchdown and they win the game, or they
at least go to overtime.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Well he's a rookie too, like you got no rookie.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
Well not now, I'm he ain't no rookie. He's been
on there, man, I mean young, he's got to develop.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
I think that Ben Johnson has done a good job
with cleaning up a lot of those things. But they still,
as you just pointed out, there's still a lot to
clean up.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
Yeah, and I still think they're one of the better
teams in the league. So I'm not pushing them off
to the side. I'm looking at San Francisco. San Francisco
in that AFC West, I mean NFC West is sitting
at nine to four. They have continued to get better.
Christian McCaffrey has been playing unbelievable and so when you
(42:23):
watch San Francisco forty nine ers, you have to put
them in the mix as one of the better teams
that could win it all. Detroit over the Cowboys, you
saw what they were able to do. You got to
give some respect to the Jacksonville Jaguars as they are
sitting at the top of the AFC South.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
But there's so many different teams.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
The team that is really struggling for me, which is
going to be good for the Dallas Cowboys. Is the
Philadelphia Eagles them being able to lose that game? Jalen
Hurts turning the ball over five times, one time twice
on one couple plays.
Speaker 3 (42:59):
I mean he threw an.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
Interception, got the ball back, they fumbled it back to.
Speaker 3 (43:03):
Him, he got it and then he fumbled. One man
had five turnovers.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
He was just turning it over and just like Domino,
put it on the table. But then you start looking
at it and you say, man, are the Eagles going
to let the Cowboys back in to the NFC East lead?
Speaker 2 (43:24):
I don't think that it's a question are they going
to let them? I think the Cowboys are gonna take it.
They just ran into a team that's better than them, Detroit.
The Detroit Lions are a good football team, and I
did not expect them to beat Detroit.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
But I that your pick said that you predicted them
to pick them.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
Well, heart with heart, what happened.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
Was I'm trying to feel good. Well that ain't making
you feel good.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
But what I do feel about it about is their
chances against Washington and their chances against the Giants, Like
those teams are struggling and the Cowboys are finding themselves.
At the same time the other the other teams in
the East are struggling. Yeah, the Eagles have to fault there,
(44:17):
but the Cowboys have to lift their end of the
wagon too.
Speaker 1 (44:21):
Well, their end of the wagon needs to come from
George Pickens, and George Pickens is somebody that has got
to get better and he has to step up and coach.
Schottenheimer spoke about his conversation with GP and what the
expectations are moving forward.
Speaker 6 (44:40):
Yeah, we talked a little bit about it, and again
he just, you know, in his words, he goes, hey, shoty,
I didn't play my best game, and.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
You know I think that.
Speaker 6 (44:50):
Unfortunately, none of us, you know, played our best game,
and so uh that's real. But again I don't worry
about George and his love for football and playing this game.
Speaker 3 (44:58):
And uh again, you know.
Speaker 6 (45:00):
For five or six weeks he was the talk of
the sporting world. You know, look at George Pickens, and
you know, again, we didn't coach or play well enough
to win that game in Detroit.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
They beat us, is what it is.
Speaker 6 (45:12):
We've had a couple of days to you know, reset, refocus,
and now we're on a Minnesota The.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Thing that I don't like about that is when he
said we didn't play our best game. No, man, I'm
here to talk about you. I'm here to talk about
your effort. And there's a lot of people that are
looking at him and saying, GP, you have to be
better when there's a moment of not being able to
step up.
Speaker 3 (45:37):
No, I think you looked at that wrong.
Speaker 2 (45:41):
Like he said, George Pickens came to him and apologized
and said that he didn't step up. He said, we
as in the Cowboys didn't And he said, us.
Speaker 3 (45:52):
As coaches, we that.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
I don't think that it was a Pickens dodge in
the heat.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
He deserves. He deserves the heat.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
But the fact that he was a man and came
up and apologized for it, I take a lot of.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
You know, I give him a lot.
Speaker 1 (46:12):
Of kudos for well, what I've seen and what I've
been hearing here out of Dallas lately when it comes
to George Pickens.
Speaker 3 (46:19):
Yes, he's been exciting. He's been a great teammate.
Speaker 1 (46:23):
But a lot of people are starting to see what
they saw in Pittsburgh and why they got rid of him.
You start thinking about this and the financial burden that
We've talked about. Everybody wants to talk about Dak getting
two hundred and fifty million. He may not have deserved it,
but that's what the market warranted for Dak Prestott, and
(46:43):
I think he does deserve it for the position that
he plays and what he means to that football team.
You look at what CD is getting paid right now
as a number one wide receiver? Are you going to
pay George Pickens that type of money to be your
other wide receiver?
Speaker 3 (47:02):
I don't. I don't think you can. I think that
it will him.
Speaker 2 (47:05):
Could I'm saying if you could, If you could, yes,
why because I think that he's a dynamic player and
a playmaker.
Speaker 1 (47:12):
There's plenty of dynamic players that give you better effort
than that.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
And I know you still mad, and I'm I'm I'm
trying to temper.
Speaker 1 (47:21):
This well because you you you run a business, you
run a community. So when when a star can make
money for you, it's a good thing. But when he
becomes a detriment. I'm not saying that George Pickens is that.
I'm not saying that I think he's done well since
he's been a Dallas Cowboys. But I'm talking about the
(47:44):
future is this a I'm gonna play nice until I
get my money, and then I'm gonna go out here
and act the donkey.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
Am I gonna?
Speaker 5 (47:50):
Am?
Speaker 1 (47:50):
I gonna be this player the entire time that I'm here.
I think he and Ceedee Lamb are a dynamic du
I think they could be special. But am I going
to get the max effort from both of those guys?
Because regardless if you like Dak or not, he's giving
you max effort. That offensive line is getting better and
better every single week. The running game is starting to
(48:11):
show up. Uh, Jake Ferguson needs to hold on to
the football, and you still got to figure out what
you're gonna do with your defense. So do you spend
that money? Because for everybody that says you shouldn't have
gave it to Dak that got the money, that that's
just like Notre Dame's not getting in the playoff. He
can argue all they want, Notre Dame, you're not in.
But the reality of the situation is, if you're going
(48:33):
to make moves moving forward to shore up your team,
are you gonna spend.
Speaker 3 (48:38):
That day You have to.
Speaker 2 (48:41):
This is a good teachable moment and we all have them,
and this is the teachable moment. I hope that coach
Shottenheimer told him or tells him, Hey, I can't get
you paid with that kind of effort. Yeah, that's the
unforgivable seeing you can have a bad game, but if
you show lack of effort and have a bad game,
(49:03):
that's a whole nother Yes, I can't, I can't co
sign for you. You You're gonna have to make that up
to us, right, And I've made apologies before and had
to go live up to the expectation. He did not
pass the test of expectation against the Lions. That's what's
(49:28):
making you mad, and that's what's frustrating you, and it's
making you doubt whether or not you want him as
a key, intricate piece on a team that you support.
Speaker 1 (49:41):
The one thing you can control in any part of
this is your effort. Yes, sir, that's it, man, And.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
He did not give it.
Speaker 2 (49:48):
And you know what, I'm not co signing for it either,
But I'm just saying I'm about chances. I'd give him
another chance. You've got a few more games, what three
four more games?
Speaker 1 (50:01):
I appreciate you understanding that he deserves chances and I
need a chance.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
To Yeah, not happy. Your face is like Mark, I
don't care what you say because you let me down.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
Yes, there's consequences for your actions and their lack of
That's the biggest question that we have, and that's why
a lot of people in Dallas are questioning should Jerry
do it? Coming up next, we're gonna talk NBA whimpy
is he on the verge or coming back? And we're
gonna talk NBA Cup right here on the morning Kickoff
(50:37):
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and always
free on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (50:42):
Welcome back to the morning.
Speaker 1 (50:43):
Kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
The NBA it is still fantastic and so good that
we're playing the NBA Cup in the East. The Miami
Heat defeated I mean, excuse me, The Magic defeated the
Miami Heat one seventeen to one oh eight. The Knicks
(51:04):
defeated the Raptors one seventeen to one on one, and
so on Saturday, in the semifinal of the NBA Emeridis Cup,
the Magic, number one seed will take on the number
three seed. In this final bracket, the Knicks to advance
to the championship game. And tonight we have NBA the Thunder,
(51:27):
who I don't know if they're gonna lose another game,
mark they continue to find a way to get better
and better. They bring in guys that are coming back
from injuries, and they don't skip a beat. They will
take on the Phoenix Sun Sons that will be on
Prime Video tonight, the Thunder versus the Suns, followed by
(51:47):
the Lakers and the Spurs, and the Spurs will be
without Victor win Binyama one more week, possibly maybe two.
But I think from all the reports that I've seen,
they believe that Winby will be back by the time
Christmas Day rolls around.
Speaker 2 (52:07):
Well, I hope so, because you want him on the
biggest stage for basketball. That is the announcement that football
is the transition day. That's when everybody starts talking about basketball,
and I want him to be a part of that.
Speaker 3 (52:25):
I will be that. I will be at that Nick
game in New York.
Speaker 2 (52:29):
So I'm excited about that, but I would be more
excited if I can watch Winby play.
Speaker 3 (52:37):
Before that game. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
Well, I just mentioned it about the OKC Thunder. They
are on a fifteen game wind Streak. Right now, they
are twenty three and one, and they just find ways
to get it done. Whether they're trailing at the half,
whether they're leading from start to finish.
Speaker 3 (52:59):
They get it done.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
It they have to go in the overtime, they find
a way to get it done. How impressed are you
with what you've seen from this OKC thunder team as
they continue to really just destroy the competition.
Speaker 3 (53:15):
I'm super impressed.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
And it starts with with the SGA. I always pick
on him by pushing off, but his skill set is
just so high hard. I mean it just he doesn't
have a weakness and he stays so evenly killed.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
You don't see him take a lapse. Ever.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
We was talking about George Pickens and the effort.
Speaker 3 (53:41):
SGA is all effort all the time.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
And when you're a leader, is that guy you feel
like I have to meet his crazy and defensively, all
of those guys have the same thing, same energy defensively,
so it's they're just they're just a perfect storm.
Speaker 3 (54:05):
Harge. Yeah, you're a perfect story.
Speaker 1 (54:07):
You look at them and and like you said, SGA,
he's averaging thirty two points a game, almost thirty thirty
three points a game. He's got six assists per game,
so he's not just scoring, he's assisting, he's moving the
ball around. And then you look at what they continue
to do when they bring back players. They brought back
(54:30):
my U what's his name, Williams, Jason. You know, they
got the same the Williams brothers. They ain't even brothers,
they just the same Williams on there. He comes back
from the injury and he just fits right back in
and is able to knock down shots right away. And
it's just amazing to me because I would not have
(54:50):
thought that this was the way that this team was
going to be after after winning the championship talking Jalen Williams, and.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
Usually when you win the championship, we kind of take
a step back, but they have pressed the gas and
pushed it further than they did last season.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Yeah, it's just it's amazing to me that a team
can at this point. Now, obviously we've seen teams go
seventy two or whatever it was that Michael Jordan and
his team did where they were in single digits. We
saw it with the Golden State Warriors, and they were
able to do that where they were just dominant the
(55:30):
entire season. But that's also a lot of stress on
you too, because the minutes that are being played, the
time that has been put out exerted out there. You
just start to look at it and you're like, wow,
this has been so impressive to see. Another team that
has been impressive has been the Los Angeles Lakers and
(55:52):
Luka Donchets.
Speaker 3 (55:53):
We talked about this before.
Speaker 1 (55:55):
At the very beginning of the season, we believed that
obviously this team was going to be Luca.
Speaker 3 (56:00):
Luca has shown.
Speaker 1 (56:02):
To be the guy that has understood his role when
it comes to playing this game. Luca is averaging thirty
five points per game. He's also being able to average
nine assist a game. So when you got a guy
like Sga, like Tyrese Maxi that aren't afraid to score
(56:25):
the basket, but they're also looking to make others better,
you got problems for other people's.
Speaker 3 (56:31):
Team, well, you got problems.
Speaker 2 (56:33):
But the thing that is benefiting Luca is the fact
that right now Austin Reeves is on a heater. Like
Austin Reeves has scored thirty points himself how many times now,
like seven times, and it had a fifty point game
this season, like so where did that come from?
Speaker 3 (56:56):
Like, he's going to be an All Star this year.
Speaker 2 (57:00):
Now you bring in Lebron James back from injury and
Lebron is being Lebron. Uh yeah, yeah. I think that
they see a championship window. They're talking about right now,
trading dogon Connect and Vincent for another Connect.
Speaker 3 (57:21):
They still talking about Dog Connect.
Speaker 7 (57:23):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (57:24):
He was a he was a he was a seventeenth
pick in the draft, and they're trying to they're trying
to unload him.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
He's quit.
Speaker 2 (57:34):
He's like, man, look y'all, try to trade me. I'm done.
You can see it in his plate. He don't even
look the same, right right. I'm like, if you're gonna
trade him, just gonna trade him, get rid of.
Speaker 3 (57:46):
Him, or release him.
Speaker 2 (57:47):
Release so you can't release him because of the salary cap.
Speaker 3 (57:52):
Release you still got to pay the money. Get some form.
Speaker 1 (57:55):
I mean, obviously it's been put your hand off despite
your arm what.
Speaker 3 (57:59):
What what does he doing? Is he good for your team?
Arguing with me? You know I'm right? Do you like
to believe you right all the time? But not all
the time, but just right here, you don't.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
You don't get rid of him because you're mad at him.
Speaker 1 (58:12):
Nobody's saying you're mad at him, But is he being
is he a detriment to your team? Anne? But you
said nobody's taking him.
Speaker 3 (58:22):
Somebody's gonna take him? When when we what what? I'm
not I'm not mad, I'm not I'm talking.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
About what Why are you putting it on.
Speaker 3 (58:30):
Me to trade him?
Speaker 1 (58:30):
On the point, do you look at it and you say,
this dude is not helping our team.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
They should have did it in the off season because
you saw when he came back he sat on the
bench with his arms folded. And now he's he's he's
he don't look the same. I watched him during the
off season. You know, I'm a Laker fan on watching
everything hyper closely.
Speaker 3 (58:54):
He looked like he don't want to be there. He doesn't,
so they all know that. Now is horrible.
Speaker 1 (59:01):
So why why why are you looking? I'm pulling up
a box score from the last game that they played.
D N Pete did not play coaches decision. Max Kleeber
did not play coaches decision. Why are you keeping this dude?
Why not send him down to the G League? Why
not get him some runs? So people call you now
(59:22):
you want to completely piss him off. I mean, he's
what is okay? What is that?
Speaker 3 (59:27):
Man? Oh my god, he's so mad at us? Who cares?
He's not even part of your team? So why are you?
Why are you holding onto this asset? That everything?
Speaker 1 (59:38):
That's all he is right now a depreciating asset because
he's not playing. So who's going to look at a
guy that is not playing at all and say he's
gonna help me?
Speaker 3 (59:51):
Can you do me a favorite called Roka? Because I
don't have damn no, because.
Speaker 1 (59:56):
The Lakers always frustrate me because of the moves they
don't make. They he tried to trade him to touch Charlotte.
It ends up, they fail it, they bring him back.
That's why he gets pissed because you're not helping. And
then you brought him back, and then you barely you
didn't barely even play him.
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
Then I don't want to get hurt like you get
him hurt. Then he's not in value. But I understand it.
Speaker 1 (01:00:18):
But he has a value now because nobody's taking the trade.
Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
Well, so that's the thing that is killing me on
this coming up next when he comes up, he's the
world's strongest bad and he's gonna bring you his world's
strongest take, and I hope it's not about Dalton Connect.
Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
We're done with that. On the morning kickoff on sports.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone that always free on the
iHeart radio app.
Speaker 3 (01:00:48):
You heard that beat drop Connect can only mean one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:00:50):
WWE Hall of Famer and World's Strongest Man d Mark
Henry brings you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:00:58):
Take it away, big fella. Yes, you know what I'm saying. Then, Thomas,
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man. My guess back then they didn't know me.
Now I'm hot, they all on me. Well, guys, here
we go again.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
Uh. University of Texas is they're bouncing back men's basketball.
The women are, you know, it's hard to say anything
other than giving them superlatives, but the men's team struggle
and they're still they're they're still trying to find an
(01:01:42):
identity with coach Miller and his sister. One of the
things that I feel like is going to be imperative
in the development of this team is the guards are
gonna have to really work together and they're gonna have
to play with a little bit more intensity, the switching
(01:02:05):
and fighting through screens because they don't want to switch
a lot. They want guys to stay in front of
they man and I appreciate that. I love that hardcore
old school defense back coach Miller. But I watched the
competition and Connecticut is a very good team. They're a
(01:02:29):
very good team. They're educated team. One of the things
that I feel like is gonna be the thing that
gives Texas a strong chance to win this game against
Connecticut is they're gonna have to trap, They're gonna have
(01:02:52):
to press, They're gonna have to do things that they're
not accustomed to doing so far this season. They have
veteran players that I feel like can get that done.
But I'm going to give you what I saw. Solo
Ball is a dynamic guy off the dribble, deny at
(01:03:18):
the ball. When the ball leaves his hand, don't let
him get it back, and it'll disrupt the offense. They
have Carabine. They're forward older player. He's a senior. He's
twenty six years old, which is really old for college
(01:03:39):
basketball or football, like any college sport.
Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
He's like Pavia. And then you have a big guy.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
They have a sixty eleven two hundred and sixty five
pounds forward center in reed and.
Speaker 3 (01:03:58):
Rebeat. Like listen, there's no secret they have talent, but
in order for you to.
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
Eliminate talent, you have got to play together, and that's
something that we have not seen, especially from the Texas guards.
My take is this, if Texas wants to win this game,
they're gonna have to do some things that they haven't
done this season yet, which is, have your big man
(01:04:28):
in the post, not get in foul trouble early because
they're gonna need him late in the game.
Speaker 3 (01:04:36):
That's the number one thing is.
Speaker 2 (01:04:41):
Make sure you're a big man, stay active, but don't
get in foul trouble.
Speaker 3 (01:04:46):
Secondly, they're gonna have to press this team.
Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
What say you, It's difficult because all of a sudden
you start to think about.
Speaker 3 (01:04:58):
Can they do that?
Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
Are they Is that the type of team that they are?
Because things that you don't characteristically do, then you.
Speaker 2 (01:05:07):
Just don't characteristically do them, and you can't expect them
to just turn that on.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
Yeah, So it is going to be more of a
challenge for this team to play within themselves in them
not get sped up in those situations. Because Connecticut is
going to be a team that will pressure the basketball.
They will deny, they will put pressure from end of
(01:05:35):
the court to the other end of the court. They
they're built like that. I don't know if Texas is
built like that. I don't know if Texas is able
to execute that type of game plan, because again, I
can't have you go out there and do something you're
not comfortable doing or you're not used to doing, and
expect you to be good at it. So if Texas
(01:05:56):
is going to try to go out there and press,
this has got to be something that they've been working
working on for quite some time and created this other
entity of them. They got to be able to speed
up Connecticut. But Connecticut is used to playing fast. That's
how they like to play. They want you to press them.
They want to get up and down because of what
you said. You know, you talked about denying the ball
(01:06:18):
for ball and he works to get the ball back
to them.
Speaker 3 (01:06:24):
That's the deal. So and they will make you foul.
And we've heard he's.
Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
Still trying to figure out his depth coach.
Speaker 3 (01:06:35):
Miller that is this will be a good way to
figure it out.
Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Because they have pretty good guards and you want to
put these guards.
Speaker 3 (01:06:43):
To the test. Hey, this is the time to do it.
Speaker 5 (01:06:48):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
I don't see you. What are you saving it for? Well,
I don't think he's saving for anything. I think Coach
Miller obviously he wants to win every game that he
plays in and that he's coaching in, and he wants.
Speaker 2 (01:06:59):
To want to see Kim the Weaver own Ball. They
both the same guy, except Ball is a better shooter,
but so.
Speaker 3 (01:07:08):
High energy athletic kill the Weaver. Can can? I think
he could do it?
Speaker 2 (01:07:14):
And I would go to him and I'd look him
in the face in front of my whole team, and
I said, guys, this is is not on my one player.
But I'm challenging you. I want you to outphysical him.
He is not a better athlete than you. He is
not a better talent than you. He's just been in
(01:07:36):
a situation where he's got more reps as a guy
in his offense.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
They have a lot of faith in it. I'm I
have faith in you. I want him nullified. We nullify him.
We can we can win this game.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
And if nobody, if any if there's not any objections,
do y'all think that we could do that at like
you have to like get into the head of your
team and bring out more than sometimes what you have.
Speaker 5 (01:08:08):
You know who you are.
Speaker 3 (01:08:09):
I know who you are. I listen to your cousin
talk about you so glowingly.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
I was like kind of really proud to hear the
stories without you being there.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
I know who you are.
Speaker 2 (01:08:24):
And sometimes these guys they just don't know who they
are yet. And they graduate college and then they go
on to the NBA and then are overseas or whatever,
and then they find themselves.
Speaker 3 (01:08:37):
Man.
Speaker 1 (01:08:37):
I wish I had known this five years ago. Man,
I would have been great in car. I would have
been so much better in college. Like, it's time to
push those buttons now. And I just have a lot
of faith in what coach Miller is and and and where.
I've the way that I've seen him play, saw.
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
Him play in the playoffs in the tournament last year,
and they they out coached Texas, right, So now I
want to see him do that for Texas well.
Speaker 1 (01:09:13):
The difference is, again I'm looking at what Hurley has
created there inore Stores, Connecticut and the way that this
team has been able to persevere because they have that
type of experience together The problem is Texas is still
learning their guys and learning coach Miller's system. You saw
(01:09:36):
the hesitancy in certain areas on the game against Southern
so I'm.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
Yeah, you are. I just want to see him do
so good. Me too, Me too, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:09:49):
I mean, we're the home of Texas Basketball, Texas football,
Texas Athletics.
Speaker 3 (01:09:53):
We want them to succeed.
Speaker 1 (01:09:55):
I'm just curious to how quick this team can get
through that gelling process.
Speaker 3 (01:10:00):
Make that happen. Good stuff by the world strongest man.
Speaker 1 (01:10:03):
We're gonna close out the show and send you to
Dan Patrick, but first we've got to hear from our
Hall of Famer Michael Huff as he was inducted into
the College Football Hall of Fame right here on the
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred to Zone
and always free on the iHeartRadio app. What another great
show that we've had once again right here on the
(01:10:26):
Morning Kickoff special shout out to our guy Danny Davis
of the Austin American Statesman as he breaks it all
down as Texas gets ready for Bowl practice and getting
guys in and out of the transfer portal and also
relieving one coach the running Backs coach Chad Scott of
(01:10:47):
his duties after one season here on the forty Acres.
If you missed any parts of the show and want
to go back and listen to it, all you got
to do is get over to that down, download the
iHeart Radio app, tap on it and find the morning kickoff,
and that's where you can get all of your podcast mark. Yesterday,
(01:11:10):
the twenty first member of the Texas football team was
inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Michael huff
Thorpe Award winner, National champion and just an all around
great guy was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (01:11:30):
And here is Michael when he found out that he
was going into the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 7 (01:11:35):
I don't know if he was supposed to tell me,
but John Beam called me because they mailed the ball
for the house and he wanted to make sure I
was at the house to get the ball. And that's
kind of when I first kind of got, you know,
the news that I actually made it. First thing I
did was call my mom, call my dad, and just
I mean, they were just so excited, and like I said,
my daughters were at school, so I want to get
home when they got home from school, I got to
(01:11:57):
tell them, and you know, they were all happy when
got me to start playing football.
Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
It was really my dad growing up.
Speaker 7 (01:12:02):
It's still toughness and passion and discipline, and football kind
of had all those things. When I first retired from
the NFL, like, I knew I wanted to be around football,
and I knew I wanted to be at Texas because
Texas gave so much to me, you know, during my
college career, and you know, they molded me to be
the man I am today, and I wouldn't be here
without them. The reason you come to Texas is to
(01:12:23):
win championships. I mean, the standard is the standard. I say,
probably one of my top moments, it's probably a funny moment,
but it was after the National Championship games we won.
Everybody storming the field, and you know, I'd take my
helmet off to run on the field, and I'm looking
for somebody to celebrate with, and I couldn't find anybody
to celebrate with. It's like everybody was just going wild.
Everybody was crazy, running all over the place. But I
(01:12:46):
was just running out there by myself, aimlessly, just trying
to figure out what to do. So that would probably
be one of my one of my favorite moments because
I mean, obviously was the greatest game ever and for
us to be able to do that with Texas on
our chests, just for the state and just for everybody's
I think for me being here is just it's just
an honor privilege, just for me being back, because they
always ask me, you know, do you want number seven retired?
Speaker 5 (01:13:08):
It's like, no, I want seven out there running.
Speaker 7 (01:13:10):
Around, flying around, making plays. It kind of just brings
me joy to see, you know, when that du refail
accomplishments like when John A won to Thorpe, Like we've
been talking about that for three or four years before that.
So I think everybody from two thousand and one to
two thousand and five that you know, played a hard.
Speaker 1 (01:13:26):
And me being here today, that's so awesome, man, Yeah, awesome,
so good man.
Speaker 2 (01:13:31):
I just you know, you just feel warm. But you know,
I'm so happy for him. It couldn't be. It couldn't
happen to a nice dude too. What a great human. Yeah,
what a great human and representative of the University of
Texas he is, you know, you hear how he talks
about Texas and he wouldn't be the man that he is. Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
But the thing that stuck out to me the most
in that conversation is he said, I just I couldn't
wait for my daughter to get out of school so
I could tell him.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
You know, it's like he's a good man. Like that's
just is beautiful. Congratulations, and I just wish the best
in the future.
Speaker 3 (01:14:16):
Yeah, he is.
Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
He's one of the ogs of the University of Texas.
He's part of DBU, he is still around the program.
He still gets an opportunity to share his wisdom with
all the players.
Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
And I know that John A.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
Barron thinks of him as a very very special human being,
and so that is good for Michael.
Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
Congratulations.
Speaker 1 (01:14:41):
I was fortunate enough to go to Kenneth Sims's induction
into the College Football Hall of Fame, r ip to
the great Kenny Simms and being able to be a
part of that, and seeing all those great college football
players walking around patting him on the back who he
(01:15:02):
went in with. He was sitting right next to Tony
Romo was sitting right next to him, and just all
the things and all the stories that were being told
were it can't measure to the gratitude for me and
my family and my friends that were able to be
(01:15:22):
a part of that and watch Kenny get inducted into that.
Speaker 3 (01:15:26):
It was amazing.
Speaker 5 (01:15:27):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
Whenever I see the Old School in New England, Patriots
uniform are the logo, I think of Kenny.
Speaker 3 (01:15:34):
Right right, Like it's just amazing.
Speaker 2 (01:15:37):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:15:37):
I missed that, Man, I missed that.
Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
Man, Well, Mark, We're getting closer and closer. I think
we're about six days out from the awards ceremony.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
The also Sports Awards, man, and my favorite category that's
going to be represented is of course Athlete of the
Year and Team of the Year, but the best local
sports TV and the best local sports radio. I'm our
names on the ballot. Heart, our names are on there. Oh, guys,
(01:16:10):
y'all gotta come out, man, Like, go to the Austin
Sports Awards dot Com and get you a ticket and
come and see me and heard celebrate.
Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
I'm speaking it into existence like we got Come on now,
like and also vote for us, guys. I know this
is shameless, this is horrible, Hey man, it's not. There's
a reason why you. Yeah, y'all vote for me and hearts. Yeah,
go out there and vote for that. You know what
I'm saying, So we'll figure that out.
Speaker 1 (01:16:39):
But as always, we want to thank y'all for tuning in.
We've had so much fun. We'll continue the fund tomorrow
as we'll have our guy Eric Henry of Horns two
four seven joining us to talk all things Texas Longhorns,
dealing the Texas basketball game as well. We talked about Connecticut.
We'll talk about some of the things that have happened.
(01:17:01):
We got Thursday night football. You'll get a chance to
see Bjon Robinson, and don't forget tonight you get a
chance to listen to Craigway, the voice of.
Speaker 3 (01:17:12):

Speaker 1 (01:17:16):
Hosts the Texas women number two ranked basketball team in
the land in the Valley.
Speaker 3 (01:17:21):
So go out and check it out.
Speaker 1 (01:17:22):
But if you can't make it down there and make
sure you tune in right here, and of course listen
this afternoon from two to five for the Craigway Show.
Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
For Mark Henry, for.
Speaker 1 (01:17:31):
Marcus I'm harball hard and just remember this, don't believe
everything you.
Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
See, folks, because even salt looks like sugar. Have a
great one, Peace,
