Speaker 1 (02:04):
So we'll see what ends up happening right there. But
I wanted to get into the Texas Longhorns as they
get ready to take on the Florida Gators this weekend.
You can hear the game right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred to Zone and always free on the
iHeartRadio app, Craig Way, the voice of your Texas Longhorns,
(02:26):
Roger Wallace, and of course Will Matthews and of course
we will be at third base in round rock In
starting at eleven thirty with the pregame show, will lead
you up to one thirty and then you got national
with Craig, Roger and Will leading you into the game.
But the one thing that we were talking about at
(02:47):
this particular time was Arch Manning and his approach to
the bye week, and Coach Shark was talking about, hey,
this is one of those things that he had a great,
great game against Sam Houston State the energy, but then
you have to sit back and wait, you're not playing
during that time. Now that that momentum that you because
(03:10):
when you do something good, you want to get back
on the field right right away, no matter what it is.
You're like, Okay, I made a three point, I'm getting
back on the court, I made a putt.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
I want to go golf again tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
You just want to do certain things and you're like, well,
let's see what happens. But Sark was asked about the
approach to the bye week with Arch.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
You know, naturally we wanted to build on coming out
of the Sam Houston game because I thought that he
did some really good things for us in that game,
you know, and you know, his ability to push the
ball down the field, his ability to play within rhythm
and timing and get to secondary reads, his ability to
(03:48):
use his legs to his advantage, and our ability to
utilize his legs, I.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Think are important.
Speaker 7 (03:54):
You know.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
I think we've got to continue to push the second,
third and fourth three.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
You know.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
I mean, again, we try our best as a coaching
staff to get the first read open and then you
know we're getting when we can't. We've got to have
the ability to get through our progression. And I think
the progress that he made in that last game is
going to be beneficial for him to where not that
he doesn't know where to go with the ball on
a second, third, and fourth reasons. I think he's well
(04:22):
more than equipped and nobody, nobody prepares better than Arch.
He doesn't have to feel rushed, he's not late, and
the timing and the rhythm of his drop and the
timing and the rhythm of where people are in spots
on the field, and trusting that to stay in to
stay in rhythm. For himself, I think is something that
he can take from that game and continue to build upon.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
And that's why Arch.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
You know, when when you think about the things that
get you week to week improvement, it's the film study,
It's the time in the in the film room. It's
the time you spend extra with your players. It's the uh,
let's go run some routes so I can get my
time down with you, especially because a lot of guys
had to be out with injuries, so it's important like
(05:06):
the bye week, where all right, there's no pressure on us,
we don't have to perform, but we do need to
get our timing. Because his release point had to be different.
There's so many things that he needed to work through
at that particular time.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah, I believe that, and that's a great opinion. I
think he got time to be healthier. I think he
got time to have some cohesion with Q. He has
some time to get with Moseley a little bit more
before they start to play. I mean they're not on
(05:41):
the scattery before. Yes, right now as starters are as participants,
active participants, but I think they will play in this game,
so they I think it just gave them more time
to jail and.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
To mesh Well.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
One of the other things is with the expectation of
a top quarterback.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
We talked a little bit about this yesterday.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
When you look around college football and these guys came
in with so much respect and admiration that they were
on Heisman list and they had an opportunity to be
looked at as such. Coach Shark was asked, is it
frustrating to see the high expectations of a young quarterback
and how it's all over the place, but yet we
got to let these kids grow.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
But I wouldn't say it's frustrating, Like I have a
ton of respect for the media and y'all and everybody
outside of the stroom have a job to do too,
And y'all are part of why college football's popularity is
so much of what it is. Without y'all, it wouldn't
be as popular as it is today. And so, but
I think it's educating our players on how to deal
(06:47):
with what everybody has to say about them and focus
on what they need to do behind the scenes, rather
than playing based on the opinions of others. And that's
a thing as a young person, you know, and it's
a lot easier when you're professionals and they've been through
the fires. And you know, we're fortunate here at Texas.
You know, we have a you know, NFL market that
(07:10):
covers us. We're the largest city in the US that
doesn't have an NFL team or an NBA team or
Major League Baseball team, but we're covered like one. And
so understanding that that what the coverage is going to
feel like, but still focus on what you need to
do and not get swayed by the opinions of others.
I think is a great lesson learned and we will
benefit from that, arch will we all will that down
(07:33):
the road. That's going to serve as something that I'm
glad I went through that because I've learned from that.
Now I can be even better for it. But it's
just a different age, you know, it's a different time.
And as much as college football has evolved, the coverage
of college football has evolved, the constructive criticism has risen.
You know, all those things have changed different than they
(07:54):
were five, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago. It's different today,
and so we have to evolve with the times and
with the changing times, and we've got to do.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
A better job as coaches.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
I'll say that I have to do a better job
of our players of understanding the coverage of our sport.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
It's just it's just evolved.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
But so is the game, and so as revenue sharing
and nil and all the other things that have changed,
the conference realignment, the college Football Playoff, but a ton
of change and that's just part of it.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
And we've got to.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
Continue to do a great job of helping our players
get through that.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
I've never heard anybody say that out loud that Austin
in the University of Texas is the pro team. That
the market that we're in, per capita with how many
people are here, there's no pro teams that Texas.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Is it?
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Right?
Speaker 2 (08:50):
And nobody's really said that out loud. But that's that's
that's the that's the truth of it. That's the cruxt
of it. Like Austin is it, Church in Texas is it?
Speaker 3 (09:01):
So?
Speaker 2 (09:02):
I'm I'm I'm excited to see harde this Texas team
bounced back from these the scrutiny in the in these
first four games.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Well, I think that I don't. I don't.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
I think the expectations for the University of Texas are
rightfully where they need to be. I mean, you've had
success over the last few years. You've been the team
that has gotten into the playoffs. You're the only team
to go back to back seasons in the playoffs, and
the expectations are warranted. I just think that the the
game against Ohio State and the fact that Texas committed
(09:40):
so many penalties, there was a drive that was there,
But if you think about what really happened in that game,
you get away from their drive, they win the game
if you make that one play on the deep shot
because Ohio State didn't get into uh Texas territory, deep
into Texas territory without those penalties, and then the deep
show for the touchdown, and it's a fourteen to seven loss.
(10:03):
So Texas didn't play bad in Ohio State is the
number one team in the land, so they are. Texas
is doing what they're supposed to do. I think the
whole thing was the sluggish start for Arch in the
way that he came out, and speaking of that, it's
the same thing can be said about DJ Lagway. And
here's coach sark On going back to the expectations of
(10:24):
the young players and he thought the same with DJ Lagway.
Speaker 6 (10:28):
Well, he's a very talented player.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
You know, obviously we recruited him really hard coming out
of high school out of Willis and had a fantastic
high school career. You know, I don't think the agenda
was to play him as a true freshman, right they
had a transfer and who ended up getting injured and
DJ steps in. I think he goes six or seven
and one as a true freshman starting quarterback, high expectations
(10:52):
coming back, and probably hasn't gone the way you know,
he coached.
Speaker 6 (10:57):
Napier everybody would have liked.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
But what I do know is the competitor and the
talent is still in there, and so we better be
mindful and better be ready to get the best version
of DJ Lagwey. I know the competitive lagway, I know
the competitor that he is. I know the coach that
Billy is, and they've had they've been scheming people up.
They just maybe haven't been hitting him here the first
few games. But they're gonna attack us, and they're gonna
(11:20):
attack us down the field, multiple shifts and motions and things,
and so.
Speaker 6 (11:24):
We got to do a great job stop in the run.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
But but we better be we better be cautious and
aware of them throwing the ball down the field.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Absolutely, and he didn't get a chance to play against
Texas the last time, so you know that this is
going to be a special, special game. We'll continue the conversations,
don't forget. Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman joins
us at seven point thirty four. We'll also talk to
the head coach of the West Lake Chaparrals as there
was a big commitment ceremony yesterday. Robert Lucerno will be
(11:55):
joining us as well at the top of the hour.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
But coming up next Billy Napier.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
He talks Texas Longhorns, and he too talks about his
quarterback right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning
kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Coming up in the next segment, Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman joins us to get his take on
(12:20):
the Texas Longhorns and their trip to Gainesville and going
to the swamp. And I'm not very happy about them
going to the swamp because that means that we don't
get another home game for quite some time.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
But that's okay.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
As you heard in the commercial, our guy Cam Parker
talking about us being at third base, So make sure
you come out to Third Base this Saturday for the
pregame show starting at eleven thirty and a watch party
at Third Base.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
But tonight we'll be doing.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Wind Out wind Down Wednesdays at for sponsored by Stella
Rosso Win wind Down Wednesdays, Wind Down Wednesdays over at
We will be at Canaan Abers tonight starting at five o'clock,

a chance to sign up. But gotta be ladies. Gotta
be ladies. It's a women's clinic, so fellas send you
letties over there. If you don't want to buy no tickets,
we might be able to hook you up, So come
on down and do the women's clinic with us.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
I want to continue the conversation.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
About Florida because the Gators are an interesting case study
and the reason why I say that. When you look
at the Florida Gators, this is a team that traditionally
is one of the best in college football. They're tough,
they have an opportunity to do some amazing things. They
(13:57):
have great athletes coming out of the state of Florida.
So you can't walk into this game thinking, oh, yeah,
Texas got this right away.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Now that travels exactly.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
So when you start to look at this team and
the talent in which they play with, you're like, this
could be interesting for the Texas football team. Now, there's
no way that I believe that Texas will not win
this game. Texas is a seven and a half point
favorite on the road, but there is that sense of
(14:31):
be careful of this team because they believe that they
have a chance to be special once their offense starts clicking.
But that Texas defense is one that they fly to
the football.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
They got playmakers.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
You have this young man Grayson Littleton, who is getting
more pubb every single week, and he's going back to
the state of Florida, which he left to come to
the state of Texas.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
So there's a.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Lot of And you got DJ Lagway, kid that didn't
get a chance to play in the game last year
because he was dealing with an injury, still dealing with injuries,
but he's a guy that a lot of.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Folks want to pay attention to.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
But I want you to hear from Billy Napier and
what he sees when he looks at this Texas football team.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
I do think that it's a big week.
Speaker 8 (15:22):
It's good to be back at home after being away
for a couple of weeks, and a good Texas team
comes to town obviously three and one with a road
loss to a really good Ohio State team.
Speaker 6 (15:36):
And it's evident you can see this.
Speaker 8 (15:40):
Team's got an identity. PK does a great job on defense.
I think that they've gotten incrementally better each cycle. They
continue to add wrinkles each year to make them a
little bit more difficult to prepare for. And the personnel's exceptional,
very experienced group on the set at third level at
(16:01):
linebacker and then secondary almost all back UH, and then
good edge players and then probably five portal defensive tackles
that all have height, length, girth power that can cause
some problems for you. And then obviously offensively, Sark does
a great job with the formation motion, the combination of
(16:27):
run play pass, and then the situational football UH, and
they're they're breaking in a new quarterback arches. Obviously, reputation
speaks for itself. One of the best quarterbacks in the country.
And you know, I think that they are breaking in
new players at other positions up front, tight end, running back, receiver,
(16:50):
so more new faces.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
On the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 8 (16:53):
And I do think you can see them their rhythm
getting better each week.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
And that is something that Texas fans are striving for,
the rhythm of the offense getting better each week. Last
week we got a chance to watch this Texas football team,
or two weeks ago now because we had Bobbie watch
this Texas football team play the way that we were
hoping to see them play.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
And finally it has happened.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Man, I'm finally, Yeah, we get to we get to
Florida the week the week that we had off hard
is not always a bad thing. I think that, you know,
rest is really important. My coach used to tell me
all the time. You gotta let the well fill up
sometimes not just physically, but emotionally. Like Texas has got
(17:48):
a hard road to hold these next five weeks. I
was gonna say four, but you know, you cannot not
mention Georgia in that situation. So enjoyed his last week
of risk because it's not going to get easy.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Yeah, this Texas team is ready to go. And that's
why sometimes you start to look around and you're trying
to focus in on, Okay, where are the strengths, where
the weaknesses? But when you look at the other team,
they go as their quarterback goes. That's Dj Lagway and
we heard coach Sart talk about him. But now you
(18:26):
get a chance to hear from his coach, and it's
all about his eyes. I got to look him in
his eyes and see what's going on.
Speaker 8 (18:33):
Yeah, seeing a look in Tuesday, I think that's important,
you know, I think that's altimately. You know, I'm trying
to get We're trying to do our best for him,
you know, in terms of creating an environment.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Where he can continue to get back in his rhythm.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Yeah, and the rhythm is the key for him because
he hasn't had any he's been dealing with the injuries.
He's been He's been dealing with these injuries though whole time.
And so now you start to see, Okay, is this
guy just got bad tissue? Is he injury prone? Is
he somebody that continues to have all past the eye test?
(19:15):
He passes the eye test, But you start to look
at his numbers and you're like, man, is he going
to be that guy?
Speaker 3 (19:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
I don't know if he's ever going to get over
that hunt because of.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
The things that he does.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
He's a talented, talented quarterback, but the talent goes only
so far because you look at one thing and you're like, Okay,
how did we get to this point?
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Last tuesday he was in a walking boot.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Yeah, I'm just wondering, like, how do you go from
walkthroughs that practice not actually physically running and jumping and
cutting to coming into a game with Texas a defense
that is very fast and very prepared in a game
(20:00):
which the week before you threw five interceptions? Like how
do you get your get back as a quarterback in
that situation? Well, I think the reason why he was
in the walking boat is precautionary. I mean, I think
because he's had so many things and they had a
bye week. You've talked about getting the letting your well
feel back up, So maybe that's why they did that,
(20:23):
because we've heard of a lot of Texas players that
walk out in a walking boot. So then he got
right back to practicing. They said he looked energized and
he was ready to go. So my main thing is
is he one play away from being out of the
game again? And I mean I know it's for me
from a hit or from a tackle.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Yeah, I mean he can they can tackle him, roll
his leg up. I mean, there's so many different things
when you grab at him to try to figure that out. So,
I look, I do not wish injury on anybody, especially
especially when you look at what DJ Lagway's upside is.
(21:05):
I I'm just curious to pain threshold. Is he able
to be able to stay in there and be that
type of quarterback that they need in these games?
Speaker 3 (21:15):
And can he stop turning the ball over?
Speaker 1 (21:18):
I hope it don't start until next week after Texas happens.
I hope he don't stop turning over until after the
tech ME four. Yeah, I mean, go back to being
who you were last week two weeks ago. Turn that
thing over, apple turnovers, give it to the other team,
and we'll see what happens. But two thirty kickoff. We'll
have more of that all week long as we get
(21:39):
closer and closer to kickoff. Coming up next, we have
our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
Americans joining us.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
To talk all things Texas Longhorns right here on the
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's Wednesday, so you know,
we got to talk to our guy, Danny Davis of
the Austin American Statesman, and we bring him in to
(22:08):
talk all things Texas Longhorns and Danny. After the bye week, obviously,
everyone's excited to get back to talking about the actual
things that happened on the field. But during the bye week,
obviously coach Sark comes back and talks about the positive
things that he looked at over the weekend. But what
(22:29):
was your biggest takeaway from our presser with Coach Sark
on Monday.
Speaker 9 (22:37):
I really had any huge takeaways. I think they're kind
of back in that business mindset. The way this schedule worked,
which is how Steve wants it to work. It is
weird that they're kind of playing catch up with the
rest of the SEC teams. And there's I think Steve
mentioned Ole Missus played three conference games already. South Carolina
has also played three conference games already, so it's a
(22:59):
little weird that Texas is about to, you know, get
things started. But I think the players, as they get
ready for this weird stretch of games where they're not
going to be home for forty some days, I think
they're just kind of ready to actually play games that matter,
and hopefully they worked out some of those issues that
they've had during the Bible that they're able to address
(23:19):
in non conference play where it's a lot the stakes
are a lot lower than then during a conference game.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Danny, you think that it's an advantage or a disadvantage
to not playing all the conference games early and playing ketchup.
Speaker 9 (23:33):
And she's talked about this in the past, and I
understand where he's getting what he's getting at. He does
not like the idea of, you know, taking your foot
off the gas in November or you know, he feels
it's a little harder to get you know, players and
coaches and fans up for a game against who care
State in November as opposed to you know, Texas playing
Georgia and Vanderbilt and Arkansas and A and M. So
(23:55):
they're gonna be having you know, their their foot head
on the gas as opposed to you know, a game
that you know they should win by seventy and if
something goes wrong in that non conference again, then everyone's
freaking out.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
In the middle of November.
Speaker 9 (24:07):
So I think Steve just prefers to, you know, work
on the things they need to work on in September
and then you know, go to the gauntlet of SEC play.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
But you know there is now downfalls to that.
Speaker 9 (24:17):
I mean, that is a gauntlet that is a lot
of there is no time to catch your breath during
that stretch.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
But I think Steve just likes to get it out
of get it out of the way.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
You know.
Speaker 1 (24:26):
The other part of that too is you know we
get by this time, we have a better understanding and
we went through the first quarter of the season, and
what would be the great that you would give the
University of Texas football team at this time?
Speaker 9 (24:43):
Solid b I mean, sure there's things you can work on,
but I mean you can go to any college football team.
There's not no such thing as a college a perfect
college football team. But I think most people, if you
ask them before the season what your predictions were for
this first four games, it'd either be four or three
and one. I still a top ten team. Obviously, there
are some issues in that utub game that were pretty glaring.
(25:06):
But the defense has been incredible. The offense is still
figuring itself out, which is what you know. I think
if we, you know, took a wider view of it
at the beginning of the season, we may be like, Okay,
this is an offensive four offensive line starters, you know,
a pretty brand new receiving core, a new quarterback, and
then you know their top two running backs have been
injured pretty much this entire time. So maybe things weren't
(25:27):
gonna be perfect. But I don't think there's a reason
to panic if you're a Texas fan, but things I
think you know, Texas fans is also much rather be
four and oh than a three and one right now.
But there's things to work on. But it's it's not
the world's not This guy's not falling.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Danny is there is there a new injury report?
Speaker 2 (25:45):
We know that Quartavi Wisner was scheduled to come back
this week as well as mostly have they printed anything
about that yet?
Speaker 9 (25:56):
That comes out tonight, And I think Steve was pretty
happy on Monday not having to answer our questions about injuries.
He can just refer to the injury report report now
and those usually come out around seven o'clock certain Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
Friday night.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
So we should find exactly.
Speaker 9 (26:12):
Where where Trey and Kevin Mosley and some of those
other guys are, if they're trending towards playing or if
we may have to wait a little bit longer to
see those guys.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
We're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American States
when you can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis, and
you're right, he was all too happy to tell us.
You know, there's a beautiful thing that happens this week.
Now where y'all don't have to ask me those questions.
You could save that one. I thought that one was
he took a little shot at us. Danny took a
little shot at us. So we have questions, but that
(26:49):
was some fun harder, you know, Jabs, there.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
No doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Well, the big story coming out of Gainesville is the
health and well being. You talked about the injury report.
We'll get a chance to look at the injury report
for Florida as well as DJ Lagway continues to battle
through lower extremity injuries. I was talking with Mark and
I were talking about it a little while ago.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
He is.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
He's the X factor in this whole thing for Florida,
and if he goes out and plays well, they got
a chance. But if he turns into turnover lagway, that's
another issue. Does he seem like he's often injured that
this team can never really catch a flow?
Speaker 9 (27:32):
Yeah, I mean, obviously he missed last year's with the
last year's game in Austin with the hamstring injury, and
he's been dealing with some stuff all that. I think
I read that he was he was practicing practicing last week,
so hopefully he can he can play this weekend. But yeah,
when you're starting quarterback, is Texas fans know a little
bit all too well about this. You know, when you
Quinn missed two or three games each year just because
(27:55):
he took a lot of hits or you know, just
wasn't I don't want to say injury, Prona do. I
think that's fairly, But when you're starting quarterback can't go,
you know, your depth is really important, and you know
Texas has luckily the last few years going all the
way back to you know, you had a Hudson Card,
you had a Malik Murphy had an arch Manning last
year has had some stable backups. You could take the
(28:15):
rains for a game or two, and that it doesn't
appear to have been the case at Florida last season.
And you know, if DJ can't go this week, well
have to see what their backup play is, you know
this season.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Well, Danny, you got a chance to go out to
the Dale Diamond this past weekend watching the Texas baseball
team for your first look at them, and they have
media availabilities. They're playing again on Friday night. What was
your what was your thoughts of Number one? The crowd
was amazing for a Saturday in the fall to go
watch some baseball.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
Both teams had to buy, by the way, But.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
You start to look at this baseball team and how
it was shaping up with some of the new guys press, I.
Speaker 9 (28:55):
Think we need to settle there. With all this, all
the praise about the crowd. It was a nice week
in October and teching Texas fans, uh, they usually traveled
pretty well, so I wasn't too surprised to see that
they had a decent crowd for for what this event was.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
But you know, we'll see what the crowds like. Actually,
this on Friday.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
High school football games Man High School.
Speaker 9 (29:17):
They we'll talk about how great, great these fans are,
but yeah, I mean, this is a team. I think
it was seven newcomers of the ten starters, including the
pitcher for Texas. Obviously, there's gonna take it's gonna take
some adjustment for the PA announcer and some of the
fans who uh, you know, you'd love to for their longhorn.
There's gonna be a lot of fresh faces. But the
new guys look good. The top of the lineup looks
(29:39):
really really good. You know, Aiden Robbins was as advertised
on Saturday. And then you have some guys, you know,
Casey Borba, Adrian Rodriguez, some of those returners who are
expected to take that next step and we'll see what
that looks like. But you know, they looked they looked
all right on on Saturday at nine to three wins.
A nine three win regardless of its fall, I needs
(30:01):
needs fall spring, I gets a good tech program. So
I think Texas fans made the trip to Round Rock
should be pretty excited about what the next next few
months are gonna look like.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
Yeah, well, we'll be excited this Saturday, two thirty as Texas,
Texas on Florida, and we look forward to talking to
you and getting your recap of trip to Gainesville.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Man, what are you excited?
Speaker 9 (30:25):
What I'm excited about is next week I'm gonna come
out here and see if we can get a old
Mark Henry to do some horns down because I need
to find out if he's going for Oklahoma or Texas.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
He got some blood up there and Norman I got.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
I gotta know who you're Danny.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
That's an easy that's an easy answer. I can give
you that right now.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
You're gonna pick the horns over over family?
Speaker 6 (30:45):
What is that?
Speaker 10 (30:46):
Man?
Speaker 2 (30:47):
I'm already not talking to my wife. Christ She like,
you're going cheer for your son. I am gonna cheer
for him. I hope that he gets in the game.
I hope he makes a play, but I won't long
Harns win my thirty.
Speaker 4 (31:02):
It's cold over the Headery house.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
I'm on the couch. I'm good, I'm good. I'll take
the couch.
Speaker 9 (31:12):
Well, I'll say, if my son decided to go to
Montetta stayed in to the Montana, I'd probably write him
out of the wheel.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
So thank you, thank you for somebody finally telling me.
Everybody I know is like, yo, man, you need to
you need a cheer for your son this week. And
I'm like, I will cheer for him. I will be
wearing all black. I will not be wearing any orange.
(31:38):
I got a black any Crimson, no red, no cream,
no sirt.
Speaker 4 (31:43):
I think good at Crimson. We'll get you Gus's Crimson shirt.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
Well, hey, Danny, take it back, because I like you.
I need you to stay on my side. My wife,
I said, listen, I need I need a black shirt
with Henry on the back and his number. That is
what I got and that is what I'm going with.
(32:06):
And she is not happy about it. But I will
be praying.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
You gotta make some choices bad.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
Listen, you gotta put your flag in the ground.
Speaker 1 (32:15):
Dan.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
If it requires me to sleep on the couch.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
A week or two, man, you know what, that's just
what I gotta do.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
That's why he comes in here Olympic because his back
is hurting because he's been on the couch.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Thanks Danny, as always, bro, we appreciate you.
Speaker 4 (32:32):
So y'all.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
There He is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
When we come back we'll close out our number one
and we'll talk a little MLB. Big games happened yesterday,
and somebody's not happy right here on the morning kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. This is all great
stuff about Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
Make sure you follow him at.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Danny Davis Underscore, I mean at Underscore Danny Davis. Coming
up in the top of the hour, we'll talk to
Robert Loserno, the Westlake men's basketball coach, as the top
thirty five recruit made his commitment yesterday and he was
front and center, as was I. Outstanding time for this
(33:18):
young man to make his commitment, and we'll talk about
it at the top of the hour. But I wanted
to talk Major League Baseball because yesterday the games were
went I wouldn't say as expected, but they were some great,
great pitching duels that happened yesterday, and one of them
happened last night. And let's just say we expected this
(33:40):
to happen, and it went louder than expected.
Speaker 9 (33:45):
Swing in a line drive riffed right field back on.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Lead off Homer show. Hey, oh Toddy, a little lighter
over the right field fence.
Speaker 11 (33:58):
And just like that, the Dodgers make a one nothing lead.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Show he explodes immediately.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
That pitch came in one hundred miles an hour and
it went out one hundred and seventeen miles an hour.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Show.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
Hey o tany MVP again. Just everything that he does
is he has a huge flair for the dramatic. The
Dodgers win the game last night against the Cincinnati Reads
ten to five, as they had fifteen hits and they
had five home runs last night.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
Did you see the second one he hit?
Speaker 1 (34:36):
Oh yeah, I don't think it's landed yet.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
It almost left the stadium. But I'll tell you when
I came in here, Marcus, I was.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
I don't know if man. He got Barry Bond's power. Man,
he got Mark McGuire power. He's got show. Heyl tany
powder good lo his own person. He's his own person,
and he's unbelievable. But the pitching performance by Blake Snell
was outstanding. This is a guy that was come back
from an injury he missed the beginning of the season,
(35:03):
but all he did was go out there and handle
his business, going seven innings with nine k's. So the
Dodgers take a one to zero lead as they defeat
the Reds.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
They will play again tonight in the American League. At
the five o'clock game, it was the New York Yankees
leading all the way in to the end of the game.
It was the pitcher's duel in the Bronx the Red
Sox battle from behind. Garrett Garrett Crochet. He was pitching
(35:35):
his behind off and Eraaldis Chapman comes in to slam
the door with the bases loaded by getting two k's
of John Carlos Stanton and Grisham and then getting a
weak flyout to right field from Chaz grism. But here's
the deal. Chastrism should be in the lineup. I don't
understand why he did not start yesterday. Here's an overthinking
(35:58):
situation for a boon and there's a reason why the
people in New York want him out of there.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
This dude was a.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Thirty thirty guy, thirty thirty and he did not start
in the game last night. That's a disappointing part of
it all. But I'm a big fan of Chisholm.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
He is. Why did he pull the picture is what
I want to know. Why? Because he threw over one
hundred pitches.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
But as I've said before, Mark and you and I
had this conversation, you don't pull a guy that's your
best chance of winning. You have to get game one
in these series, it's a must. If you don't, if
you can't bring him back, you can't bring him back
in another game. But Max Freed has been your guy,
and you've rested him early in the season, worked him
(36:50):
slowly for this, to build him up, and you go
out there and choke him and then the game is over.
But Gary Crochet went out had eleven k one turned
run dealt yesterday Lefty, they had timely hitting, and of
course the Yankee Killer Alex Bregman comes up big with
a bas knock. So now they play again today. Another
(37:14):
big pitching matchup that happened yesterday was the Padres against
the Cubs. The Cubs end up winning Game one three
to nothing. The closer for the Cubs was part of
the worst team in baseball, the Chicago White Sox.
Speaker 3 (37:31):
He went up to the North side and now he's got.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
He's set up perfectly to come in and close out
the game.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
Great pitching matchup again.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
All these pitchers were dealing yesterday big time.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
Matchup. The Cubbies used five.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
Pitchers nine in his four hits, one run, and Keller
was the one who closed it out.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
So now they play this afternoon.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
It's pretty much the same schedule as yesterday and the
final game. The first game of the day was the
Tigers versus the Guardians. That was a two to one matchup.
Schoolbl who will probably be the cy Young Award winner,
went seven and two thirds fourteen ks TYG fifty three
(38:17):
year record in Detroit that was set in nineteen seventy two.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
Year my birth by Joe Coleman.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
He was He threw eleven pitches over one hundred miles
an hour in yesterday's game.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
That is incredible, Yeah, incredible, And I guarantee you they didn't.
They didn't pull him out until it was time for
him to go out, not yank him before he's ready.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
Exactly exactly what a what a mess that they had
over there with the Yankees. Now they're sitting there looking
at Aaron Boom like they want to fight him. Chisholm
is ready to fight for real because he didn't playing
a game.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
I mean, he didn't start thirty thirty and thirty.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
And you have him on the bench to start the
game because it was a left handed pitcher pitching.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
What a dumb move by Aaron Wow, you use the
D word, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
Dumb dumb, the dumb, dumb, dumb our number one in
the books. Coming up next, we're gonna talk to the
head coach of the West Lake Chaparral's basketball team.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Is they had a big.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
Commitment ceremony yesterday and go ahead hook them horns about
it right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to our number
two of the morning kickoff right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone and our number one. We
talked a lot of Texas football as they get ready
to go on the road to take on the Florida Gators,
(39:47):
which you can hear the game right here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, your home for Texas football.
We also heard from Danny Davis of the Austin American
Statesman and we got a chance to talk Major League
base Ball and show hey, o Tani is the man
with the plan. But coming up next, right now, we
(40:08):
have to talk to the head coach of the West
Lake Chaparrals Robert Locerno.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
He's a good friend of mine.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
I've been knowing him since his days at Aikins And
yesterday this happened at Westlake High School. I bo Oden
(40:41):
made his commitment to the University of Texas. Not only
did he make his commitment to the University of Texas,
he had transferred to Westlake High School.
Speaker 3 (40:50):
What's up, coach, How you doing today? Pretty good? How
y'all doing.
Speaker 1 (40:55):
We're good, We're good. We're excited to have you on.
Like I said, I've been knowing you. Say your over
at Aikins High School when you were with coach Pev
coaching against my older son Michael. And you've been leading
this Chaparral basketball team for quite some time now. And
business just picked up over there. When bo Oden made
his decision yesterday to go to the University of Texas.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
I did.
Speaker 12 (41:20):
You got to make one correction. I was the assistant
at web State.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
A long time ago with Alice. Y'all beat us in
the playoffs one year. I remember that too. Before you
took the job. You try to leave that. I didn't
want to bring that part of it into the conversation.
Speaker 12 (41:42):
Yeah, but hey, coach TV is a good friend of mine.
I spent some time with him this summer at USA Basketball.
But if you if you tell everybody that I worked
for PEV, they're look at me different. I got to
make put it out there.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
True that, true that.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
But yeah, so now you got a new basketball squad,
you got some new players that are there, and the
big name is bo Ogden. And yesterday there was a
ceremony at west Lake High School where there was a
lot of folks waiting to see where he was going
to end up.
Speaker 12 (42:13):
Yeah, I was happy that there was such a good
show out from uh.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
There at the high school. You know, a lot of local.
Speaker 12 (42:19):
Media, some national media, a bunch of students, some of
his old teammates from Saint Michael's. You know, some are
clotball coaches.
Speaker 4 (42:26):
So it was great that.
Speaker 13 (42:27):
He had all those people that are supporting yesterday.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
Coach, can you can you tell our fan base what
is University of Texas getting in bo Ogden?
Speaker 12 (42:39):
Well, he's a big wing.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
So you know, he's.
Speaker 13 (42:42):
About six five, maybe even six', six so he has
really good size at the guard.
Speaker 12 (42:46):
Position you, know right, now he's an elite.
Speaker 13 (42:50):
Shooter this summer he really shot the ball well and
just in the sauntlet on THE aau circuit for The adidas,
TEAM i think he was over around forty seven percent from,
three so he shot.
Speaker 4 (43:03):
The ball really.
Speaker 13 (43:03):
Well he's also.
Speaker 12 (43:06):
A really a good.
Speaker 13 (43:07):
COMPETITOR i, think you, know that's one of those things
that sometimes it's hard to quantify in, numbers but both
plays to, win and he does he's willing to do the,
dirty dirty work to win a game as.
Speaker 12 (43:18):
Well Uh so you know you put that with his
size and shooting ability and then and then wanting to
win above, ALL i think it's a really solid piece for.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
Them, well the abble On Fall far from The.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
Tree chris was one of my Favorite university Of texas
players because of how tough he, was how he was
the he was The Dennis rodman of the teams that
he played.
Speaker 3 (43:42):
On of, COURSE i would think that his son would follow.
Suit that's.
Speaker 12 (43:46):
Awesome, yeah he had a good friend and you, know
the one thing like With, bore you, know he's been
here for about three months in the summertime and. Stuff
he just you, know through his recruitment he just, SAID
i just you, Know i'm different from my. Dad you,
know my dad was a good play and played AT. Ut
But i'm, Different i'm not, him AND i think it
was important for him to let.
Speaker 13 (44:05):
The coaches that were recruiting him know. That you, know
he's he's a different.
Speaker 3 (44:09):
Player you, know that was a really good.
Speaker 13 (44:12):
Player you, know, obviously play AT ut you have to
be pretty special to play, there but BO i was
a little.
Speaker 12 (44:17):
Bit you, know he's a little bit more. Dynamic i'll played.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
A lot of pickotball in his dad when we WHEN
i first moved To.
Speaker 13 (44:22):
Austin you, know pretty both a pretty dynamic. Player he
can play off the dribbling pass as, well and so
he's he's just. DIFFERENT i think he wants everybody to know.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
That, yeah and we've got a chance to see that
quite a. BIT i wanted to ask you, too because West, lake,
obviously he has had a great tradition of basketball players
coming through the. UNIVERSITY a lot of them did go
to The university Of, texas but so there's always been that.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
Connection but your teams play a different type of.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
Style how has bo adjusted to the way that you
guys play compared to where he was.
Speaker 12 (44:57):
BEFORE i, think you, know when when you're that as
talented and you understand the, GAME i think you can
fit in in any.
Speaker 13 (45:06):
Style and you, know it's kind of like you.
Speaker 12 (45:09):
Know with his recruitment for college because because he's he
has such good basketball pedigree and and taught so much
at a young. AGE i think both can fit into.
Speaker 13 (45:19):
To any style of, play especially because you can shoot
it to everybody in these shooters.
Speaker 12 (45:24):
Coming over To, West, LIKE i, thought he's done a
great job of fitting in with the guys. ALMOST i
feel like he's made a concerted effort to fit.
Speaker 3 (45:33):
In and and that's.
Speaker 12 (45:35):
Great you always want somebody to to have that mindset
that they're going to be team. First but but he
also now that he's he's fitting so, well he can
push it.
Speaker 13 (45:46):
A little bit and probably be a little bit more
aggressive and a little bit more dominant.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
On both sides of the.
Speaker 12 (45:51):
Ball so you, know we haven't had that many practice.
Speaker 13 (45:53):
Together and that Many fall league games and all, that
but it's.
Speaker 12 (45:56):
Kind of like what we're working, to, uh where the
rest of the. TEAM i understand the things that he can,
do and he understands what the rest of the guys
on the team can, do but he can actually push
it a little, bit AND i, think, guys we'll accept.
Speaker 2 (46:08):
That coach y'all better get ready to roll out some extra,
chairs because now The longhorn faithful are gonna show up
into y'all games because they want to get a. Glimpse,
uh the ones that haven't Seen bowl. Play And i'm
going to be one of. THEM i want TO i
want to front row. Scene can you can you hook
a brother? Up CAN i sit behind the?
Speaker 3 (46:28):
Bench?
Speaker 12 (46:29):
Oh, man we got we got a media role on
the other. Side we'll make Sure i'm put the big
tables out on the other side and we'll put upsicker down.
Speaker 2 (46:36):
And a big tape because you're pulling.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
The figure out man.
Speaker 12 (46:46):
Like Jay, Z you'll be close up the trip to. Referee, okay,
awesome let's.
Speaker 6 (46:51):
Go let's.
Speaker 2 (46:52):
Go i'll take.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
It we're talking to the head coach of the West Lake.
Speaker 1 (46:57):
Chaparrals yesterday there was a big comitment at The westlake
With Bo, ogden son Of Chris, ogden Former Texas longhorn
basketball player and now working as a general manager for
the basketball. Team and you, know bo mentioned some things
during the ceremony yesterday about his recruitment and how it
(47:19):
came down To tennessee With Rick barnes And. Purdue what
what do you think was the deciding. Factor do you
think it was more about the. Legacy do you think
it was more about What Sean miller brings to the
table or was it JUST i want to be close to.
Speaker 12 (47:35):
Home, Yeah i'm NOT i think it's probably a little
bit of all. THAT i think it had to have
been a little bit stress stressful time and in their
household the last couple of days when the decision, coming
because you, know Coach barnes was sat intical part in
In augie's, development you, know playing there and gained them into,
(47:56):
coaching and you, know they moved To, knoxville AND i
Think bowl, enjoyed the whole family enjoyed their time In.
Knoxville and then you have a such a quality coach
And Matt, painter who you, know it just uh everybody
came to watch practice a couple of years back and
Recruiting Matthew meyer and just sat in the gym and
talked to us and he was just such a genuine.
(48:17):
Person SO i think that had to have, been, uh you,
know a stressful. Time but you, know this is probably my.
Perspective at the end of the, day when you live
In austin and And, uh you have a chance to
play for the flagship university of the. State it's just
such a hard thing to turn. Down and then When
Coach miller and the assistants started, to, uh you, know
(48:37):
really recruit him and and come to the, GYM i
THINK i think both could see, himself you, know playing
there and being part of that that you, know it's
not a, rebuild but you know it's, like you, know
a new coach and new energy around the. PROGRAM i
think both could really see himself being part of.
Speaker 2 (48:54):
That, well it had been an easy decision for, me,
coach because you, know we all know That Rick bourne
is a defensive coach and and and you defense does win.
Championships but, Uh Coach, miller he likes to, score and
and you have a guy that wants to wants to
put the ball in the, basket you gotta let.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
HIM i think that he made a great. Decision what about, YOU.
Speaker 12 (49:20):
I think you, know the one thing THAT i told
bol you, know because you, know, yeah he has two
great parents at, home and you.
Speaker 13 (49:27):
Know you can see yesterday he had other family members,
there so he had he had a lot of people
to lean on in the. Decision the only THING i
told him is that this will probably be the one
time in his life WHERE i would tell him that
he needed to make a self decision and choose exactly
what he wanted to do for, himself because y'all, know
when you get to that level of, basketball it's going.
Speaker 12 (49:48):
To be very challenging and he's going to go through growing,
pains uh wherever he wherever he ended.
Speaker 13 (49:53):
Up and so you know when when When bow Decided,
TEXAS i think it was because you, know he he
liked to. Fit you, know being close to home is,
nice but also he could see himself playing for Coach
miller and it was what he wanted to do in his.
Speaker 12 (50:06):
Heart versus you, know his mom and his dad or
Coach barnes Or Matt painter or somebody else pointing on.
HIM i think he made a choice for you, know
the he got peace because he made a choice for.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
Himself, well he made the right.
Speaker 1 (50:20):
Choice you can Hear carlton in their scream and hook
him the whole.
Speaker 3 (50:24):
TIME i was standing right by.
Speaker 1 (50:27):

year at some, point probably at a tournament or something like,
that because we play on the same night you, do

Chaparrals and, Yes, michael his team did beat them in the.
Speaker 3 (51:05):
Playoffs. YEAH i didn't want to throw it out, there
but they.
Speaker 2 (51:08):
Did, HEY i can't wait to see him on some
of those elevator. Plays oh my, god he's good.
Speaker 3 (51:15):
Shooter yeah he can shoot, it, man he can shoot.
Speaker 1 (51:17):
It when we come, back we'll continue the. Conversations big
weekend in college football and The Cleveland browns made a
decision and a lot of people are still questioning. It
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports RADIO am.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
Thirteen, hundred there's a.
Speaker 1 (51:33):
Good stuff From Robert, loserno the head basketball coach for
West Lake Chaparral. Basketball they got a good. Team Bo
ogden commits to The university Of. Texas Sean miller is
smiling a top thirty five commitment for The university Of.
Speaker 3 (51:51):
Texas good stuff right.
Speaker 2 (51:52):
There that's a good fit, too being getting a guy
that that's a real shooter with what they already have
and what they brought in all big.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
Guys texas never got the big.
Speaker 2 (52:02):
Guys we talked about that last, Year like now they got,
some so let's let's.
Speaker 3 (52:07):
Go, yeah they can shoot.
Speaker 1 (52:09):
IT i wanted to TALK, ncaa but before we get into,
that The Cleveland browns made a decision yesterday to go
With Dylan gabriel as their starting quarterback as they head
over To. London they will be Playing sunday morning And
(52:31):
Dylan gabriel will be the starting. Quarterback but that's not the.
News the news is that they decided to Keep Shador
sanders as the number three quarterback for their, organization and
a lot of folks are trying to figure out, why
why is it that you're not giving this young man
(52:55):
an opportunity to be at least the number. Two we
understand that you want to Give Dylan gabriel the right
first because of who he is and where you drafted
him and you believe that he's going to be a
better version of. It but to Keep Shador sanders at
the number three, position knowing That Joe, flacko now that
(53:17):
you've made the move From, flacco he's, done he's.
Speaker 3 (53:21):
Done he should not be.
Speaker 1 (53:22):
Able you should be able to trade him if you need,
to because now you put your team in a position
to where you believe That Dylan gabriel is going to
give you your opportunity to win some ball.
Speaker 3 (53:33):
Games why is it that you're keeping him.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
Because they don't Want cincinnati to have. Him if you
cut him right, Now cincinnati picks him up, automatically they're better.
Speaker 3 (53:44):
Team.
Speaker 2 (53:45):
Wow i'm not getting rid of him, Either No, wow
and let somebody else have him that needs.
Speaker 3 (53:53):
It, man it's a bad.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Timing And i'm not saying, That, okay we're in the
same division or we're in the same. Conference i'm just
saying from the standpos are good reasons, though but they
are good. Reasons But i'm just saying from the standpoint
of all, teams like IF i have a commodity on
my team THAT i know with what's going on in
(54:16):
the rest of.
Speaker 3 (54:16):
The, World, like, no, Sir, okay so let me ask you.
This let me ask you.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
THIS i get that unless they want to give me
a fourth round pick for.
Speaker 1 (54:25):
Him do you believe that The Cleveland browns are going
to have a chance to?
Speaker 2 (54:30):
Win, no but they also play spoiler and not keep
other people from.
Speaker 1 (54:34):
Winning but then you, go so The bengals got. Everything
if The bengals, Going If i'm The.
Speaker 3 (54:41):
Bengal you said that you wanted him to Have jameis.
Speaker 1 (54:44):
Either another person that's third, string go Get but his
third string is different than The Cleveland browns third string
Because jamis has played in THE nfl for a long.
Speaker 3 (54:55):
Time go Get.
Speaker 1 (54:57):
Jamis if you're The Cincinnati, bengals quit what are you waiting?
On he's sitting on that? Roster or wait and see
what they're gonna Do cleveland's going to, do Because cleveland
right now is one in.
Speaker 3 (55:10):
Three do you think they're gonna pass The Baltimore. Ravens.
No do you think they're gonna pass The Cincinnati. Bengals.
No do you think they're gonna be The Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (55:20):
Steelers, No they're gonna stay at the bottom of this.
Deal and you're making a decision for a quarterback who
you didn't want to start at the beginning of the
year because you went.
Speaker 3 (55:33):
Out and Got Joe.
Speaker 1 (55:33):
Flacco you have five quarterbacks at one point in, Camp
so what are You what are you holding on the flocko?
Speaker 14 (55:42):
FOR i think a case for holding on A flaco
could be as a veteran. Leadership veteran leadership the young
players can have someone to go to to get advice.
From maybe you don't have trusting your quarterback coach as
much as you have Trusting.
Speaker 3 (55:58):
Flaco somebody.
Speaker 11 (55:59):
Need.
Speaker 2 (56:00):
YEAH i was just about to, say that's an indictment
on the if you need to, Go, yeah you.
Speaker 1 (56:06):
Do you when you walk in refrigerator and you see
that the date is past and it's, spoiled do you
just keep it in, there just to.
Speaker 3 (56:12):
Hold on to.
Speaker 1 (56:13):
It get him out of, there pull that out and
let let's get so.
Speaker 3 (56:16):
Glad that you made a food. Reference what it wouldn't
Mean it wasn't. Food. Milk milk is, nourishment but it's
not it's. Food, yeah there you. Go come, on, now
come on that.
Speaker 15 (56:30):
Heart, no, no not doing that my. Team oh my,
gosh it's, no it's really.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
Not it's really everybody listening to, us, right now knows
that you took my. Side that's so.
Speaker 1 (56:46):
Good them people are driving in the car right now and,
saying what Is mark talking about right?
Speaker 3 (56:51):
Now Hard Mark hanry's, Side he went he chose. Food,
NO i did, not that's what they're. Saying they did
not say.
Speaker 1 (56:58):
That but you, look get this team and you you
you try to figure out what is The Cleveland, browns
and right now there are a failed organization that has
questionable decisions from the. Top and the other part of
this conversation to which we have not brought, up Is
Deshaun watson is close to being ready to.
Speaker 3 (57:18):
Play oh, man what do you do with?
Speaker 6 (57:21):
That?
Speaker 14 (57:21):
EXACTLY i doubt they Played. WATSON i don't even think
he suits up this.
Speaker 1 (57:26):
Year there's too much money invested In. Watson not if
he can go out there and, play you have to play.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
HIM i Think cleveland's just gonna eat.
Speaker 2 (57:33):
It is there anybody else that's quarterback room is just?
Suffering where it's just so bad That, okay we'll Take.
Speaker 1 (57:45):
Watson they're no not at this, Point LIKE i, said
you AND i don't think.
Speaker 3 (57:52):
They was a lot of money, Man AND.
Speaker 1 (57:55):
I don't think they're really worried about what's going on
in a quarterback.
Speaker 16 (57:57):
Room and ALSO i also, think Like, watson the reason
why they just hold on to them and just cut
him towards the end of the year is BECAUSE i
think a certain amount of his contract is also.
Speaker 14 (58:10):
Ensured so if you can cut him and get the
money back a lot of big lump sign, BACKED i
think that will.
Speaker 3 (58:17):
That's health on their.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
Part, well they're gonna have to figure out something because
it is not a good look from what we're seeing
from The Cleveland. BROWNS i want to transition to college
football because this weekend college football has some, big big
games that will be, happening especially in THE. Sec Game
day will be In, Tuscaloosa, alabama as the number sixteenth
(58:41):
Rank Vanderbilt commodorees will be taking on The Alabama crimson
time And Coach, lee the head coach Of, vandy just
realized that they hadn't won In tuscaloosa in a very long.
Speaker 10 (58:55):
TIME i, know you know the history WITH panderml AND TUSCA.
Lusa how long it's been since you guys have won.
Speaker 3 (59:02):
There JUST i don't know that, history SO i don't
know a whole lot.
Speaker 10 (59:05):
Of, okay to change the to change like things in
the past like, that, though how much of it is
just believing that you can do? It like you, mentioned
this team doesn't pass skepticism like they all believe they
can do. It how big of a deal is that
when you go into a place you haven't won at
for a, while.
Speaker 3 (59:20):
You, know we. Don't we just.
Speaker 11 (59:23):
DON'T i, mean usually that's me And laura talking after
the game and, saying, hey you, know some of these
have been, like you know, whatever it was nineteen eighteen
when we scored seventy whatever Points and in my response
to that's, like what in the world were they doing
in nineteen eighteen to be able to score that many?
Point was that tempo offense and? SPREAD i, mean my?
God so we just. Don't we don't pay a lot
(59:47):
of attention to. That we're creating our own history. Here
that's how we see, it and that that really is
the spirit of this. Group AND i mean even in
the way we this Is team. Five you, know it's
not because the history this program isn't, important, Right i'm
a part of the history of this.
Speaker 3 (01:00:03):
Program but there.
Speaker 11 (01:00:04):
Was an, intentional purposeful break to say what, happened what
has happened, before has no bearing on what is to.
Come and here we are five years in and we've
the kind of the methodical and you, know investment over,
time the, painstaking the suffering and sacrifice has given way
(01:00:28):
to a program that that feels solid and feels, whole
AND i think gives us a chance to again create
create the. History we want to actually define this.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
Program and the thing about him is he's one of
those coaches that has definitely been locked. In, ALSO Sec
nation will be in, TOUCH i mean In gainesville with
The Texas longhorns and The Florida, gators and the only
sad thing about them being there is that Means Tim
tebow will probably be doing The gator chump as he's
(01:01:05):
bringing out the football. Team coming up, next we got
the world's strongest man bringing us his world's strongest take
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports RADIO am
thirteen hundred Design you already know what time it is
when you hear that beat drop W We hall Of
famer and the world's strongest, Man Deep Mark henry brings
(01:01:27):
you his world's strongest.
Speaker 3 (01:01:29):
Take take it, away big, fella all, right what's? Up
if you know what time it?
Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
Is what toms it's time for The World's strongest take
by the world's strongest. Man my guess back then they
didn't know. Me Now i'm, Hot they all on.
Speaker 3 (01:01:48):
Me, guys.
Speaker 2 (01:01:52):
Apreciould call. You as a star player for The Minnesota,
lynx she's always been kind of like a leader in THE,
wnba and she has had some serious issues with the
(01:02:12):
leadership from the league Commissioner Kathy, engelberg saying that she's,
negligent saying that there is not someone in the position
that's not only for the, players but actually for the.
League now that's a heavy duty, statement but you have
(01:02:37):
to go on what was said in order for everybody to.
Understand Kathy engelbert had a conversation with and a preachier call,
youer and in that statement that she made to her
was That Caitlin clark should be grateful that she has
(01:03:00):
THE wnba platform because that's the reason that she's able
to make sixteen million dollars off the.
Speaker 14 (01:03:08):
Court, Hey, mark you want to hear that. STATEMENT i
would love to hear, That, marcus thank.
Speaker 17 (01:03:13):
YOU i also asked how she planned to fix the
fact that players Like Haylen angel Of, page who are
clearly driving massive revenue for the league are making so
little for the first four. Years her response, Was halen
should be grateful she makes sixty million.
Speaker 7 (01:03:26):
Off the, court because without the platform that THE wba gives,
her she wouldn't make anything. Cool and in that same,
conversation she told me players should be on their knees
thanking their lucky stars for the.
Speaker 2 (01:03:37):
Media righte steal THAT i got them thinking their lucky
star on your, knees thanking your lucky. Stars what kind
of commissioner if you if you value women.
Speaker 3 (01:03:49):
Not say that it's not.
Speaker 2 (01:03:50):
Even, basketball do you make a comment like. That, no
you have to have kouth, ethics more rolls. Standards SHE
i agreed With miscallier that she is lacking. That and
you go through all of the w n B a
(01:04:10):
women's players that some retired as well As Breonna, Stewart
Paige buker's who's was the rookie m V p this,
Year Andreel, reese But.
Speaker 3 (01:04:26):
Elina Del don retired like this past. Year and.
Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
She she, SAID i heard from everybody but, her, like
you gotta have a pulse of the league that you're
in and she.
Speaker 3 (01:04:45):
Doesn't should she continue to be in?
Speaker 2 (01:04:50):
Office and on top of, That Kaylin clark is the
biggest name in the. Sport if you, say of this
veraging word about, her what are you saying about everybody?
Speaker 3 (01:05:04):
Else and people were.
Speaker 2 (01:05:08):
Saying, well why Hasn't Caitlyn clark said. Anything it's not
her place to say. Anything she don't have to say.
Anything BUT i feel like initially my thoughts were. Different
BUT i don't think That Caitlyn clark has a comment on.
It Because i'm not a political. GUY i try to
(01:05:29):
stay away from it to stay as nonpartisan AS i. Can,
YES i, do AND i really feel like my take
is that they need to have her removed in order
for this new collective bargaining and new contract with THE
wnba to.
Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
Succeed in the next twenty nine days is when it's
overwhere what say? You?
Speaker 1 (01:05:54):
YEAH i think it's it was rightfully done By callier
because of the fact fact that she doesn't go without the.
Knowledge you can't go in there and just talk willy
nilly without having the understanding of those. Comments she, SAID
i tried to keep it behind closed, doors but you
kept disrespecting, us SO i felt like it could be
(01:06:17):
brought to.
Speaker 3 (01:06:17):
Light the.
Speaker 1 (01:06:19):
Commissioner she basically said THAT i understand where they are coming,
from BUT i don't believe in all of the things
that were. Said, obviously when these types of conversations get
to the, forefront there's gonna be variances of views in these.
Situation but the fact of the matter that the league
(01:06:43):
makes so much money yet the players and there's average,
salaries like the team has a salary cap of a,
million like.
Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
Five the team salary cap is like a. Million. Five
you gotta spread that between twelve.
Speaker 1 (01:07:02):
Players so that is where the frustration and the lady
talking about the.
Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
Media deal that they.
Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
Got you got the media deal because everybody wanted to
see What Caitlin clark was. Doing it was never about
you getting this media deal. Done you have to have
a you have to have the, platform, absolutely but you
also have to have the. Product and if the player
is the best player in the, league which is probably
Why Caitlin clark did not play the rest of the,
(01:07:32):
year that she probably could have played at some, point
but she might.
Speaker 3 (01:07:38):
Have been taken a stand in this situation as. Well
oh nice.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
Take so you look at these types of situations and
you look at As i've, Said Page, BECKERS i believe
is just as good As Caitlin, clark if not better
in my. Eyes you look At callier in what she's
been able to. Do you get To Asia wilson and
what she brings to the. Table these are people that
(01:08:05):
other people want to, see, Right so when you, say
well just be this is a one of those shut
up and dribble, moments it. Is those are one of
these shut up and dribble. Moments and we do have
to understand that the commissioner of any league works for
the ownership group and they don't work for the play,
right and they work with.
Speaker 6 (01:08:27):
A lot of.
Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
People try to make it about the.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Money what these women are saying right now is not
about the actual dollars and.
Speaker 1 (01:08:35):
Cents it's more about the wellbeing of the product that
they're putting out.
Speaker 3 (01:08:38):
There and have respect for.
Speaker 2 (01:08:40):
How much work we're putting in and what we bring
to that.
Speaker 14 (01:08:44):
League but you bring up, Money you bring money back
into the. Factor for all these years that people have
been complaining about THE wnba and how much money is, generating.
Speaker 3 (01:08:55):
Isn't that part of the? Commissioners, well it never made money.
Speaker 14 (01:08:58):
Before that's my point, Though is you having trouble selling
this game with all this talent that was already in
the game, beforehand Before Cayman, clark you should have been
able to sell this.
Speaker 2 (01:09:07):
Game but that's the negligence of the commission the, commissioner
and that's what they're trying to get away.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
From they want somebody to be the cheerleader for.
Speaker 14 (01:09:16):
Them, yeah but that's What i'm pouring that out, too is,
Okay i'm adding on to. That the commissioner hasn't really
not even for the. Owners the commissioner hasn't been doing
a very good job for the, owners let alone the.
Speaker 6 (01:09:27):
Playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Yeah, WELL i think a lot of it is the
fact that nobody has been the cheerleader for them since
they started making. Money because there was a time when
the N nba was fronting the bill and THE wnba
was not drawing a.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
Dime the stadiums were.
Speaker 2 (01:09:46):
Empty now they're selling out.
Speaker 3 (01:09:51):
Hundreds of.
Speaker 2 (01:09:52):
Games so give Them Ladies day, money but more give
them their respect and the prestige that they. Deserved us
more about to respect and being able to protect them
because they are the product that needs to be on the.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
Field, WELL i mean on the.
Speaker 1 (01:10:06):
Court when we come, back we'll close out the show
and send you To Dan patrick speaking OF. Wnba THE
nba had media, days and we'll hear from The, spurs
we'll here from The bow and of course we'll hear
FROM kd the Newest rocket right here on the morning
kickoff On Sports RADIO am thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
Zone what a great show we've.
Speaker 1 (01:10:27):
Had today as we continue to get closer and closer
To texas going To gainesville to take on The Florida.
GATORS i want to thank our, Guy Robert. Lucera lucern excuse,
me the head coach of The Westlake, chaparrelles for joining
us to talk about the Bow ogden commitment as he
(01:10:48):
is now At. Westlake Bo, ogden the son Of Chris,
ogden has now committed to The university Of, texas but
the basketball season for high school starts in a couple of.
Speaker 3 (01:10:59):
Weeks, ALSO i.
Speaker 1 (01:11:00):
Want to give a shout out To Danny davis for
always bringing it on This wednesday, morning And mark wants
an Apology danny because he said that he's rocking with The.
Longhorns Major League baseball continues. Today Major League baseball continues
to today with the same Lineup tigers And, Guardians cubs And,
(01:11:22):
Padres yankees And Red sox and finishes off with The
dodgers and The. Reds but basketball season in THE nba
will be starting here pretty, soon And Mitch johnson is
now the head coach of The San Antonio spurs As
Greg popovich has moved to the front office and being
(01:11:44):
more of a, consultant And Mitch johnson talked about the
fact about what pop has taught.
Speaker 3 (01:11:50):
Him, YEAH i think.
Speaker 18 (01:11:53):
ONE i think about A MALONE i talked to, him
so he's still sharing his.
Speaker 4 (01:11:59):
Mentors and ideas and thoughts and.
Speaker 19 (01:12:01):
ADVICE i think setting the, tone it's my job to
set the.
Speaker 18 (01:12:05):
Vision expectations for the, players and then it's their job
to bring that to. Life and SO i think it's
my job to have the clear objectives of what we're
trying to achieve and the outcomes that we're looking. For
AND i think that's something that we're hoping to start
tomorrow and feel good about in the next few weeks
trying to.
Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
Implement i'm excited to see what The spurs team is
going to look like because of the change the players
that they've brought, in the explosiveness of those guards and
what they can. Do but the challenge will be on
the defensive. End will all these guys buy in to
the defensive side of it because if they can play,
defense they're going to be in a lot of basketball
(01:12:43):
games With wemby spearheading that as their DEFENSIVE. Mvp and
you better be in shape when you play The, spurs,
yep because they have four, guards and the two guards
that are the backups are better, defenders yep than the.
Starters so when your second unit comes in and you
(01:13:06):
go against The spurs backup, guards, man they gonna. Eat
they're gonna take the, Ball they're gonna they're gonna block.
It they the spurs whole identity is based around their.
Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
Defense and now Having, wimby who is a, unicorn a real,
unicorn an unstoppable player that you once in a lifetime
you see. Yep so let's let's let's be excited Because
I'm i'm gonna catch a lot of those games this.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
Year another part of The DALLAS i mean The Dallas,
triangle The Texas, triangle is The Dallas mavericks with their
number one overall, Pick Cooper flag And Jason Kidd kid
talked About Cooper flag's. COMPETITIVENESS i, thought, again he's a
competitors a lot of the right.
Speaker 20 (01:13:54):
Players i'm just hounding the ball playing without the ball, tips.
Speaker 1 (01:14:05):
Right and the one thing about him is you Got
kyrie Bat Anthony davis back with, him and you Have
Klay thompson who's gonna be able to shoot from the.
Outside so this is going to be a fun basketball
team to.
Speaker 3 (01:14:23):
Watch and their bench is loaded as.
Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
Well And Anthony davis is not playing, center he's playing power,
forward which now you Got gafford playing, center and man
that That dallas team looks like a team of.
Speaker 3 (01:14:38):
Monsters just like.
Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
THAT i think That texas has a high chance that
one of the teams in the state Of texas is
gonna win THE Nba.
Speaker 1 (01:14:47):
Championship, WELL i hope that all three of those teams
get into the. Playoffs and one of those that everybody's
talking about is The Houston. Rockets AND kd talked about
being back in the state Of texas and That houston.
Speaker 19 (01:15:03):
Atmosphere they have some connections here within the, organization PEOPLE
i work with around the league, already you, Know so
it just felt felt organic and natural coming into the
gym getting a be A Houston rocket for the first.
Speaker 12 (01:15:16):
Time SO.

to look at what they've done in the. Offseason What
i'm talking about The Houston. Rockets you look at him
And Jabbari smith. Themselves IF kd And jabbari can play
together with that, link that they have that ability to
shoot and from the outside and the ability to space,

out so your Guys sengoon can do his work in,
there they're gonna be a. Problem then you look at
what The mavericks are. Bringing you brought up the fact
Of Anthony davis playing the four instead of the fire
that links in the. Court you Got Cooper flag who
is unbelievable at attacking the rim and can shoot the ball.

Too and you Heard Jason kidd talk about the high
eye cook que in which he plays. With and then
you can Get kyrie back as.

handling the ball in the, league.
