Speaker 2 (02:16):
All right, let's get into the conversation.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
A lot's been going on on the forty acres as
far as transfer portal stuff, who's in, who's out, who's
gonna not play in the bowl game. But there is
a ball game that will be happening on the thirty
first of this month. Matter of fact, you can get
a chance to come and hang out with us on
the thirty first, as we'll be doing our pregame show
from Twin Peaks in the Round Rock location, and we

(02:40):
would love for y'all to come out for the last
time for the football season, last game for the Texas Longhorn,
last game for the Longhorn Game Day crew, as we
will now be transitioning all the way into you know, Springs.
Last time is killing me. Yeah, man, I've seen it.
And now the season, the season is going to and end.

(03:05):
I know that it's kind of crazy, but this is
where we are. This is what it's all about. And
we got this team up from up north called Michigan
that is having their own problems. In case you've been
living under a rock, Sharum Moore is no longer the
head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Biff Pogey is now

(03:27):
taking over the reins for Michigan. They had a backup
quarterback that opted out and is entering the transfer portal.
They're gonna have guys that are going into the NFL Draft.
They are going through the same things a lot of
schools are going through.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
But theirs is on a whole new level.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Oh yeah, because of the scandal that broke loose at Michigan.
And here's the head coach, the interim head coach, talking
about how he feels about this situation.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Its tumult was time, a lot of you know, anger
and and first disbelief and anger and really what we're
in right now is the face of all uh, you know,
the kids quite Franklin Field very betrayed and we're trying to.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Work through that. Yeah, that's interesting.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
As far as the portrayal part of it, I don't
know how that could be.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
What you did, I mean, how you worded that is
because he.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Was I felt like he was off and of course
when you're not used to being in that spot, Yeah,
you're gonna come across like Mike McDaniel. And has there
ever been ahead coach named Biff Not that I know of.
Like I guarantee you everybody when you said his name,
everybody went what Yeah. I definitely went wait what, Yeah,

(04:58):
his name is Biff and the back to the future
base what I was that was in my mind when
it first came about. But understanding what this is all
about and where they are at this particular moment is
something that they continue to try to work through. Well,
they're former head coach who is now the head coach

(05:18):
of the l A Chargers.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Was asked about.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
How he's dealing with it and has he talked to Sharon.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Yeah, it's it's uh really still it still.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
Don't have my head wrapped around it, Dan, Uh, it's yeah,
it Uh, it's a tragedy and just praying for all concerned.
I love my alma mater, I love Michigan, and but
I love the Chargers too. And Uh, I'd be during

(05:50):
a disservice if I wasn't putting all my focus on
the on this game.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
This is the most important game for us.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
When's the last time you talked to Sharon More?

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Uh? Have it early early December?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (06:05):
But I have texted.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Him nothing, nothing since he was arrested, Just texts, Oh
you have Yeah?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
How are his spirits?

Speaker 4 (06:16):
Uh? I think I think there is it's a trategy.
So what Uh?

Speaker 5 (06:23):
The worst days of his life and uh, you know,
keep it together and and uh and take care of
your family.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
That's you know, that's the message. And I getting spiritual guidance.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
You know he's really critical.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Are you helping Michigan at all find their head? Coach? No,
I'm not.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
All focuses on uh the Dallas Cowboys one.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
The Dallas.

Speaker 6 (06:50):
How about how about telling them to stay off his
text and quit email and the messaging people that of
not substance.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
How about being a friend that he's somebody that you
That's what a friend would do. If I would call
if I did.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
No, no, no, no, no, I'm talking about talking to him,
call him and say, bro, what do you need from
me right now? Because everybody else is trying to tell
him what to do. I'm more of hey, man, you're good,
you go, yeah, exactly. The mental state Due was in
a white jumpsuit, he threatened to kill himself. It ain't

(07:27):
I don't care that he's on social media. I don't
care that he's on that I care about him, especially
if it's somebody I hired to work for me, to
work with me. If you work with me and you
going through it, I don't care about none of that
other stuff. I want to make sure you good because
the outside noise is gonna be there. I want to

(07:49):
make sure that I take care of you because everybody
is throwing daggers at and telling him what he shouldn't be.
Everybody's telling him that that, hey man, you're a tail reperson.
His wife is going through it, his the other girl,
everybody that's involved in it is now being scrutinized in

(08:09):
the public eye.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
So my question is, hey man, you are right.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Do you need do you need anything from me that
can help calm you in this troubled water?

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, that seems like that's the first step. Yeah, yeah,
you say it would be a good.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Look you hand me your phone, right and stay off
the internet please, Yeah, man, because there there's a lot
that is going on with him personally right now more
than that.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
He donna need more than that.

Speaker 6 (08:50):
But I mean this first six months is very crucial. Yep,
Like no communication. Yeah, he has a lot that he is, Uh,
go talk to your wife. Yeah he's I mean they're
working through that. So, I mean it's just it's a tough,
tough situation. You don't watch that upon nobody no matter

(09:12):
what it is, especially like I said before, and this
day and age is so easy for people to grab
something and run with it, and then you start peeling
back all the layers. Because the University of Michigan is
complicit in this, they have a bad track record as
of right now.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
They guilty too.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
They are very guilty because they've known about this for
over years.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
I think they're more guilty because.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
They waited to pull this out so they didn't have
to pay some money exactly. And also on the top
of it, they let all these kids commit to their life,
sign a contract and then release information. How horrible is
that right when they knew they knew that as soon

(10:04):
as this signing period is over with, we're gonna release this. Well,
they forget the kids can be released from those because
of a coaching Yeah, that was bad, that's bad part.
But again I'm not excusing what Sharon Moore has done. Well,
he's gonna have to deal with that and he is
dealing with that. But the reality of the situation if

(10:25):
you're the employer and you everybody knew it, like everybody
knew what was going on during this time, and you
let it go on and then you wait to drop
the hammer because you didn't want to pay them.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
You could have fired him, you could have give it
where you find me.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
You got all this money coming in from all these
different big time donors.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Yeah, but we're gonna wait so we don't have to pay.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
I mean now the school look crazy, like they look shady.
That's what they look, Yes, because they could have handled
business and say, you know what, this is not and
we're gonna have to eat the bullet for this or
not only that, just say hey, man, look man, here's
the deal. I'm gonna let you bow out with grace resign.

(11:10):
This is your here, here's the contract. Here's what I
need you just sign and we let you walk. And
then he's not going on suicide watch. He's not going
to that person's house. His career, his career is not over.
You just tried to ruin this man's complete career.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
And we've seen other people get jobs after this.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
It's not news, it's not new, but you know what
it is. Now our next segment, West.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Coast, let's go.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
We're gonna get continued these conversations.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
That's the first time.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah, that's the first time we really got into that conversation.
College football playoffs start this weekend. Yeah, we gotta talk
on you right here on the morning kick off on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred and always free on that
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
Welcome back to the more.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
They kick off right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred,
the Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app. Coming
up in the next segment, we'll have our guy, Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman, joining us to talk
all things Texas football and of course Texas women's basketball,
and we'll give you a chance to win some tickets

(12:29):
to go see Texas women's basketball as day. We'll take
on Northwestern State tonight at the Moody Center. As a
matter of fact, we're gonna give you an opportunity to
do it right now, get over to that always free
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Leave us some message.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Hold down that microphone and leave us a message and
tell us why you want to go to this game.
And if it's good, we'll let you know and you
might get a call saying you got some maybe got
some tickets. Mark, we are right in the beginning stages
of this weekend's big.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Matchups in college football.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
We've been waiting for the college football playoffs and now
it is upon us and as we sit in obviously
Texas is not in the College Football playoffs, but we
are definitely have some eyes and ears on these games.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
And it starts this Friday.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
It starts this Friday with the Oklahoma Sooners and the
Alabama Crimson Tide. They will kick off this thing seven
o'clock on ABC and ESPN. Alabama comes into this game
as a one and a half point favorite. They've already
played each other this year and it didn't go well

(13:44):
for Bama. It did not go well for Bama. But
you look at both of these teams SEC teams and
the matchup look as much as we as Texas fans
and have this rivalry with Oklahoma, and it is what
it is. It's it's good to see that they made

(14:05):
the jump from last year because when they came into
the SEC, a lot of folks was like, they.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Ain't ready, this is not gonna happen.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
This we got, we got Texas, Texas is in and
now Oklahoma, come on, man, you gotta do Now Oklahoma
is at the party and people are starting to look
at it a little bit different.

Speaker 6 (14:25):
And I'm also glad that Oklahoma stepped up because when
they made the move, just like Texas did, the same
scrutiny that Texas got, they got right. And it's just
a better look overall. And it was a better look
for the Big Twelve to have Oklahoma and Texas do

(14:46):
well when they went to the SEC. And when they didn't,
it even made the Big Twelve look even worse. It
was like, well, Texas, they were good, but oh, you
didn't do so well. So the Big twelve is down. No,
the Big Twelve is up.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
I mean, all you.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Gotta do is look at the fact that Texas tickets
is above.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Everybody gotta buy, right, Texas tek gotta buy.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
And you look at this and you look at the
matchups and you try to figure out who, what, where,
when and why? How is this going to work out?
They both Alabama comes in ten and three, ten and
three because they lost in the SEC championship game. Oklahoma comes
into this game ten and two. As I said, they

(15:30):
played each other earlier, with Oklahoma winning twenty two to
twenty one back in Norman where it went down at
And now you look at these quarterbacks and you say,
is Ty Simpson somebody that's on draft boards better than
John Mattier. Numbers say he is, but is he better?

(15:51):
Does he make the right play? Does he make that
big time throw? Then you look at the running games,
that's pretty much a wash when you look at Blaylock
and Miller. But you have to find out where the
weaknesses are, and I truly don't know where they are
because the defense has gotten so much better for Oklahoma

(16:12):
and Brent Vinibles is making them tough. They got our
Thomas back, so we'll see what ends up happening with that.
But this was something that you start to look at
both of these teams and you're like, this is probably
the most evenly matched game of the playoffs. But you
know what, I think that I'm joking around, but I

(16:33):
think that Jacob is under direct orders. Hey, do not
talk to your dad about what we're doing. And he
gets it, and I know he does. But from what
I've seen, because I'm watching because my son is there,
and just because I'm not wearing Crimson and Cream doesn't

(16:53):
mean that I don't pay attention. And I've watched a
bunch of games that Alabama and Oklahoma played more than
a lot of analysts.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
Because they don't have skin in the game.

Speaker 6 (17:06):
I do and John Materier plays with reckless abandon at
times the last five games. He probably hasn't because of
injury and because of the fact that.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
He's just not getting the reps. Well, he's had.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
Plenty of time these last three weeks or two weeks
to do so.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
And what are you living? What are you saving it for?

Speaker 1 (17:32):
So I feel like going into this game, it's gonna
be hard on Alabama because they're gonna get.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
A John Materi that's heeled up.

Speaker 6 (17:40):
They're gonna get a John Materi that had a soco
game against LSU and has to redeem himself to the
fan base. And they also get a Jeo Materire that
there is no tomorrow right and he is a do
squat five hundred and fifty pounds, he a quarterback.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
He's he's gonna run the ball more. He's gonna be
more aggressive.

Speaker 6 (18:03):
I mean, if I'm the coach, I'm gonna have him
be more aggressive.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
There's nothing else to save it for.

Speaker 1 (18:08):
I was gonna say, you might want to, you can
squad all them weights you want, but if you throw
it to the.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Wrong team, it don't matter. And he threw it to
the wrong team.

Speaker 6 (18:17):
That's why I said in the beginning that he's gonna
have to redeem himself and prove himself to that fan
base that I'm a quarterback first. But let me hang
you some of this Cam Newton, let me hang you
a little bit of this te bow. He has the
ability to do it.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yeah, he's a talented quarterback and I know Oklahoma fans
are looking for that one that was high on the
Heisman Trophy watch at the beginning of the year. The
second game of the college football Playoffs will be the
Miami Hurricanes traveling to College Station eleven a m kickoff
this Saturday morning. A and M is a three point

(18:56):
favorite Miami. A lot of folks still leave Miami shouldn't
have been in this game, but they're here now, so
we'll see what ends up happening.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
And for Texas A and M.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
You talked about Mater turning around his season or turning
around his game going into the playoffs. The same thing
can be said for Marcel Reed. Marcel Red the last
game that we saw him, he didn't look good against
the University of Texas, throwing two interceptions and trying to
get things right. But you also got to look at

(19:31):
Miami Carson Beck. Which Carson Beck are they going to get?
Is this a guy that is going to be, to
your point, playing reckless and throwing the ball all over
the place and not being as accurate, or we gonna
look at that guy who a lot of people originally
thought coming out of Georgia he was going to be
a first round pick, possibly the first overall guy. But

(19:52):
he continued to make silly plays. So we'll see what
ends up happening in that game. Any thoughts on that game?
I really do think that an m needs to bounce back.
I mean, they needed badly, all the money that they spent,
all of the winning that was that happened. They were

(20:13):
almost a lot of people said they should have been
number one.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
And when you when you look that good, then you
have to have a bounce back.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
I think this is a bounce back game for the Aggies,
and they're gonna go out there and they're going to
do work. Well. An interesting part about what I'm seeing
in this game that he's doing picks because I'm not
gonna here tomorrow, so oh you're not?

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Yeah, I gotta go to New York tomorrow. Eighteenth? Yeah,
Oh okay, Well, no, we ain't doing no picks. Well do.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
Time, but you tomorrow I thought it was Friday. You
start to look at this matchup and you're right. A
and M needs turning around. This is a big opportunity
for them. You already know College Station is going to
be on twelve man, and they are gonna be ready

(21:09):
to go because because this is what you were hoping
for last year, this was what you were hoping for
the entire time you've been into SEC. Now you finally
get a taste of what it's supposed to look like,
and now you got this opportunity.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
So we'll see what ends up happening with them.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
I'm not even talking about those other games because the
point spread is one is twenty one and a half,
the other one is seventeen and a half. James Madison
and of course Tulane. But will we will talk about
them eventually as we get closer and closer to that
game coming up next, we'll talk to our guy, Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman, get his thoughts on

(21:52):
what's happening on the forty acres, the expectations of the
ball game, and of course we've got to talk basketball,
and what better had to break it down then with
Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman right here on
the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The
Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's hum day, It's Wednesday.

(22:15):
That can only mean one thing. Our guy, Danny Davis
of the Austin American Statesman joins us to talk all
things Texas Longhorns. See you got your shirt on, Danny,
you got your Grizzly zone. What's what's happening with them?
Are they still in the in the playoffs? Is it
still moving for them?

Speaker 7 (22:35):
Are we still in the playoffs? We're in the semifinals. Baby,
we got one Canna State. First time ever the Cats
and the grizz have met in the playoffs. This is
gonna like tear our state apart. Friendships are gonna be ruined.
Family holidays are gonna cease to exist after this weekend.
This is this is what I'm here to talk about,
the real football game. I'm about the stitches ball. I'm

(22:56):
here to talk about Cat Grizz SCS semifinals.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
This is what's all about.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
And then you one year they played, they played for
the championship up in Dallas and you went to that game, right,
was it at the Cotton Bowl or was it at Frisco?

Speaker 4 (23:08):
It was it was the Frisco Stadium.

Speaker 7 (23:11):
That was two years ago whatever, when Texas got eliminated
in the Sugar Bowl.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
That's right. Why are you bringing up Bowl stuff?

Speaker 4 (23:20):
So, yeah, that we we got our butts kick. Thanks
for that memory.

Speaker 7 (23:24):
I love spending all that money to go watch us
so I get pounded by South Dakota State.

Speaker 4 (23:27):
But you know, this is.

Speaker 7 (23:29):
New year we win, We're going to go to Nashville
and uh, new memories to be made. But thank you
for that memory. We wanted ninety ninety six in two
thousand and one. You want to bring up, bring up,
bring up the losses from a couple of years.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Those are those are good championships. I understand. I like that.
I like that.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Well, let's talk about the forty Acres real quick, because
obviously we knew, we knew that these things were going
to happen.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
We knew that they were going to be opt out.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
We knew guys were going to declare for the NFL,
and so that that that goes into the opt outs.
But then of course we have this transfer portal news
where big, big name players.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
Derek Williams Jr.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
We talked about him and how important I thought he
was going to be for the future of Texas Leangel
Lafoul and now him being out of there as well.
So what what are we expecting to see in this
Bowl game besides a lot of young players.

Speaker 7 (24:29):
I mean, I think this Bowl Game is probably just
a preview of what you're gonna see next season. I mean,
which is what these non playoff games should be. This
should be a you know, I don't you know. A
couple of years ago, I remember people got really upset
when Bijon and Roshauna opted out of the Alama ball
and we're talking about this tarnishing legacies and nonsense like that.

Speaker 4 (24:51):
But I mean, like, this is what these ball games
should be.

Speaker 7 (24:54):
This should be you know, if you're going to the
draft and you're not going to be here unless you
are desperate to play in the Citrus Bawl, you should
be opting out of these games.

Speaker 4 (25:01):
You should be preparing for your future.

Speaker 7 (25:02):
Preparing for what's next for you, and giving your chance,
your you know, team a chance to see a legitimate
game time situation with what their team is going to
look like next year. So I think with these transfers,
you know, hit hit into portal early, and these you
know NFL prospects deciding to start getting ready for that
next stage and not risking injury, this just gives Steve
and his coaching staff a perfect chance to see, all right,

(25:25):
what does arts look like look like with some of
these younger receivers.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
What does you know, this running back room look like
without c. J. Baxter?

Speaker 7 (25:32):
What does the safety room look like without Michael Tap
because we haven't seen that in four years. So I
think this is a win win for all these all
these teams against the legitimate Michigan team is out. They're
playing some you know fcs uh you know team they're
going to be be by sixty.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
This is you know, Michigan team that.

Speaker 7 (25:48):
Probably is going to be fired up and having some
wanted to prove some things on there. And so I
guess this is the preview. It's maybe not what people
wanted to see in January. People may have been wanting
to wait to see this twenty sixteam until August. You're
gonna get a chance to see it in January.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
Danny, how do you how do you fix it for
the bowls series?

Speaker 2 (26:06):
Though?

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Like when you have all these opt outs And I'm
not in defense of the guys that don't want to play,
I'm in defense of the bowl games used to mean something,
you know, the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, the Orange Bowl,
you know everything. But these smaller bowls meant something, and

(26:30):
now they they don't mean as much.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
Like how do we fix that? Though?

Speaker 7 (26:37):
I don't know if it's a thing that's worth fixing.
I mean, let's be real, this is the citrus bol
Who cares, right, Like, who legitimately cares about some of
these balls? I mean, this is now about the playoff structure.
If you don't make the playoffs and you don't make
one of those big whatever it is, six bulls in
the championship game, like it just it just doesn't matter,
Like we what was out last night, like the veterans

(26:59):
Bullsville State and Troy or Toledo or who who cares?
Did you guys spend like more than like two seconds
with the with the score tiker.

Speaker 4 (27:08):
On that today?

Speaker 2 (27:09):
Otherwise one quarter?

Speaker 7 (27:10):
Like these these bowl games for the most part, just
don't matter, and you know, that's that's part of oversaturation,
that's part of there being the playoff, part of opt outs,
part of college football is changing landscape. But this isn't
twenty twenty five years ago, where you know the bowl game,
if you got six wins, that was a huge accomplishment
and that was something to celebrate, and all your fans,
you know, you saved up all their money to go

(27:32):
to go to that bowl game, like it's an accomplishment.
Thatexas still as stuff to prove they can get the
get to their ten wins. And I'm not saying this
bowl game is meaningless, but no one the situable the
citruable banners not being hung at dk R next year.
So you know, it's it's nice to get your extra practices,
some of your fans get a nice little vacation at
the end of the year, and you know, you get

(27:53):
some playing time for the younger guys.

Speaker 4 (27:54):
But at the end of the day, the playoff is
what matters.

Speaker 7 (27:56):
And I don't think there's anything we can do to
make the out of a ball more important than this
is more important is what it is. The playoff is
what matters, and for everything else, is this extra game's
gonna be on ESPN at a random time. On I said,
the real, real games of the playoffs, which I which
I know. I went to Montana. We're in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
You know, shot fire, shot fire.

Speaker 1 (28:20):
The way that Danny presented, I understand, we love the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
That's good stuff. Danny.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
We're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American states Man.
You can follow them at Underscore Danny Davis and again
talking about this Texas football team. You talked about some
of the young guys getting their opportunities so we can
see what can happen uh into next season. Uh My
thought is you brought up the wide receiver position. Which

(28:46):
one do you expect to step up? Is it a
Jamie French? Is it obviously Parker Livingston has played plenty
of football. But which wide receiver do you hope can
make a splash?

Speaker 7 (29:00):
I mean, I think you know, throughout the season, we
talked a lot about that freshman class, and you know,
the great but cut your kids, he's you got you
got got some got some playing time. But there's a
lot of a lot of questions about this freshman class.
And Steve, I think at one point was asked about it,
and he was just like, look, you know they're behind

(29:20):
some really talented guys and it's been tough for them
to get some playing time.

Speaker 4 (29:23):
Well guess what, now's your chance and age I think.

Speaker 7 (29:29):
Jamie's from Florida, maybe this is a little of a
chance for he had to shock in front of his
in front of his people, so he get you get
a chance to see some of these the freshmen. We
know what we have with Parker Livingstone, that's not gonna
be you know, Texas you know has enough film on him.
But get a chance to have those guys run some routes,
some march and you know, get some quality playing time,

(29:50):
you know, assuming you know, DeAndre is not there. Those
reports are true, and some of those older guys are
just uh you kind of you know, get getting ready
for the next step. But this is a chance for
some of you know, these young the young freshmen that
we've heard so much about that were so highly rated,
to maybe get some more playing time and get some
actual game time reps and we'll you know, springboard them
into into next season.

Speaker 4 (30:11):
Dan.

Speaker 1 (30:11):
Before we let you go, you know, we got to
talk Texas women's basketball. They got a big tonight. But
the story is the game against Baylor. You've seen those
battles between the Baylor Bears and the Texas Longhorns for
quite some time. Obviously Kim Moulkie's not there, but what
Texas was able to do on Sunday was nothing short
of impressive by controlling that game from start to finish,

(30:35):
especially on the defensive end.

Speaker 7 (30:38):
You know, for Schart, I think you'd make a a
really good hype man because they do not They do
not have a big games.

Speaker 4 (30:43):
That is why, let's just call it what it is.
The men did not have a big game last time,
and the women you got to have a big game.

Speaker 7 (30:50):
But you know, obviously, you know, Texas and Baylor have
been playing for a very long time. Took a break
in their rivalry last year for reasons that I you know,
were inexcusable. But they're back playing each other again. And obviously,
if your Texas family's recent you know, ten to fifteen years,
you know how much of the thorn in your side
Baylor has been that kind of got the you know,

(31:14):
was getting the best of the deal at the very end.
Although Baylor came in here and ruined Texas chances had
a Big Twelve Championship a couple of years ago. So
it's been a with with Nikki over on the Baylor sideline,
it's been pretty pretty even.

Speaker 4 (31:29):
But they just dominated on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (31:33):
Thirty turnovers against the top twenty five team is.

Speaker 4 (31:37):
Nothing short of incredible. And I don't think there's any
doubt that.

Speaker 7 (31:41):
Texas deserves to be in the conversation for the best
team in the country. You know, if you want to
pick Yukon, I don't have any problem with you picking
Yukon as the number one team in the country, but
the conversation includes Texas, and I think that they proved
that this weekend. They've proven it against South Carolina and UCLA.
They prove it against Richmond, they proved against North Carrie,
very very good team that's playing very very well. They're

(32:03):
gonna win tonight by fifty points. So it's not a
big game. But if you want to go out there
to see see the ladies play, and you get a
chance to see them for the for the holiday break.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
And that's good for the kids. Though, let him go
see Texas shine, Danny. Yeah, sorry, I hope it's not.
It's not watched right now. Yeah, he's listening. He's gonna
give you a hard time, Danny. Now you know, Danny,
I'm trying to I'm trying to feel this arena every
single night.

Speaker 4 (32:28):
Kenny Bick will understand.

Speaker 7 (32:31):
It's the fans choose to go Christmas shoping tonight instead
of watching the team.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
Going and watch them.

Speaker 7 (32:38):
It's gonna be a good time and get a chance
to see it's very talented play.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
Danny.

Speaker 6 (32:42):
This is a chance that I get to see Rory
score twenty ten and maybe ten, maybe a triple double tonight.

Speaker 4 (32:49):
Rory better play ten minutes tonight and take the rest
of it.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
Benny, Can I get you?

Speaker 1 (32:55):
Can? I I'm not said nothing to you about this, Mike.
What about the recruiting for next season? I know we're
still in this season, but isn't it something short of amazing?
The only thing I could think of is the Fab
five at Michigan back in the day, Like this.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
Is a really good hall.

Speaker 4 (33:17):
Yeah, this is.

Speaker 7 (33:17):
A I think currently the number one recruiting class. They
closed really strong, added some two top ten recruits on
around signing days, a couple days after Sunday Day that
they got those two Sunnis. But this is what happens
when you go to the final four. This is what
happens when you go to the University of Texas. You
have all the nice toys, you have Moody Center, you
have obviously this nil and revenue share background, and you're winning.

(33:40):
This is a place where players are gonna want to
come play. It's nice when you have a Madison Booker
succeeding and a Roy Harmon succeeding, and Dick is able
to just point to those players and be like, you
can be the next Madison, you can be the next
Roy Harmon. You can come play at Jordan Lee, look
at all the fun we're having. And you know, for
the most part, Dick was very complimentary of how well
his players recruit and when they're able to come to

(34:03):
campus and Madison's talking up the program and Jordan's talking
up the program, and Breeze talking up the program, and
all these players are able to say, this is what
you get when you come here.

Speaker 4 (34:11):
I'm not surprised that a lot of people want to
come sign up for Texas.

Speaker 7 (34:15):
And it helps in when you go and you're on
TV and you go beat e c LA in North
Eucla and South Carolina and you get a million dollars
for doing that.

Speaker 4 (34:24):
Yeah, that helps.

Speaker 7 (34:25):
I mean it's a combination of things with you know,
people should expect top five recruiting classes from this Texas
team going forward because this is going to be a
place where people want to come play along with the
South Carolinas and you know the l s US and
some of those places we've got. We've gotten used to
seeing recrew.

Speaker 1 (34:39):
Well, no doubt there is Danny Davis up the Austin
American Statesman. Make sure you harass him at the game
tonight because you will be able.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
To see him because there won't be that many people.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
No, because I'm on vacation. I took this week off
because this is a game that I did not need
to be at, so I will not be at the game.
But you know, go go harass my empty see I'm press.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
Wow Danny Davis of the Austin America's States. But make
sure you follow them at underscore Danny Davis. Thanks Danny,
Go Grizz. We got you, brother, go Griz there is
We're gonna give you a chance to win a pair
of tickets right now. All you gotta do is get
over to AM thirteen hundred, the zone on the iHeartRadio app.

(35:21):
Tap that red microphone and tell us why you want
those tickets.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
Contrary to what Danny's talking about.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
Right here on the morning check off all the sports
radio AM thirteen hundred the zone and always free on
the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 8 (35:35):
Into the front court is Mark Tremon between the legs
and the dribble, trying to drive inside. Spins tops bounce
pass in the paint a nice lay in there for
Voca Titis needs a target bounce pass out to Cam
Heidi Ali reset five to shoot for Pope. Here's Jordan
trying a step back three from the right wing and
it's good. Taken away by my Scira driving down the

(35:57):
floor and a shot rejected and copyated shot block by
Tremonde marks outside of Wiltcher for three and it's good.
Sanders had to pass stolen, taken away by Cam Heidi.
He'll drive in and throw it down. He's back out
there now. Walghart's great pass inside from Swain to Boca
Titus for the slam. Don Longhorn's up thirty five eighteen

(36:17):
one side pass goes out now the Swain dumps it
back into the corner. Three pointer up and that's good
by Simmey and Wilcher sim with a second tray and
the Longhorns are up twenty thirty eight eighteen. They have
a fourteen nine edge. Here's Pope way outside for three.
Now Pope becomes the fifth long one to reach double figures.
He has eleven seventy six forty three Texas with eight

(36:39):
minutes to go, and now we'll be in down and
then now it's over Longhorns with the win. Final score
in Texas ninety five and Lemoine fifty three.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
The Texas Longhorse beat Lemoine ninety five to fifty three,
and they continued to get ready for.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
The SEC but Coach was excited about it.

Speaker 1 (37:05):
Coach wanted to have that conversation and he understood what
the task was going into the matchup.

Speaker 9 (37:12):
You know today tonight was an important game for our
team on the heels of the Yukon game and just
being able to learn from that game and bounce back
and grow. I think every team at this time of
year wants to be trending in the right direction towards
conference play, the conference that they're in. Obviously we're in
America's best we understand that, and getting better, improving, being

(37:34):
the most ready we can be. That's part of this,
and another part is just these final two tests before
Christmas break. You know today and next week, you know
how much better have we gotten. We're emphasizing defense. I
think we talked to our players. They would tell you that,
you know, our activity deflections. The thing about Lemoyne into

(37:58):
ten games they've played, they do two things really well.
They're very accurate from the three point line, and they
take threes. They make them, and they have a high
assist number, like they're an assist team.

Speaker 4 (38:11):
They're a system team.

Speaker 2 (38:13):
They passed the ball well.

Speaker 9 (38:15):
And if you look at those two things and remember,
regardless of our opponent, our three point defense something that
we've struggled with early this season. We're getting better in
that area. And I thought today was a good test.
They were two for eighteen. I didn't think they had
a cold shooting night or they had a bunch of
open shots. I thought we affected their ability to make them,

(38:37):
which is a good thing. Same thing with assists. They
had five in a large part of our guys, especially
our perimeterive players. I thought that an excellent job, played
great energy and togetherness, in particular in the second half.

Speaker 4 (38:53):
I I just the game in general.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
We played with.

Speaker 9 (38:55):
Effort and consistency and togetherness. The last eight minutes of
the first half was our bad time. I thought the
other team out scrapped us. They turned up their pressure,
We turned the ball over and that's why they made
a little run before the half to cut it to eleven.
But other than that eight minutes and just generally speaking

(39:17):
after halftime, we got stronger. Is the game more on
and we had a number of guys make a lot
of good plays.

Speaker 1 (39:24):
Texas will play Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, and then
we get into the Conference play January to third. They
take on Mississippi State at the Moody Center.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
Our number one is in the Bugs. Our number two
is just around the corner.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
We'll get into the NFL and talk a lot about
this weekend, but first we gotta talk NBA Cup. The
Spurs and the Knicks played last night and someone got
a title. Well do we really care? Right here on
the morning Kickoff on sports Radio A thirteen hundred The
Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app. Welcome back

(40:05):
to our number two of the morning Kickoff right here
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. And our
number one. We talked about the cheese At Bowl as
Texas will take on Michigan. Michigan is going through a
lot of turmoil there. We also talked about the college
football playoffs and what will be going on this weekend. Oh,

(40:26):
you will be hosting Alabama in Texas and n will
be hosting the Hurricanes. We also got a good laugh
from our guy Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
Coming up in the next segment, we will talk about
the Super Bowl, who is your champ and what is
the determination that all these teams have. But first we're

(40:49):
gonna talkb W. We're gonna talk MBA. Last night, the
Spurs and the Knicks played for the NBA Cup and
the Spurs came up short, but the Knicks continue.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
To play some together basketball.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
Late in the game, it looked like Wemby, who came
off the bench, was trying to do a little bit
too much and it ended up costing his team a
little bit in that game. But all you got to
do is say the Knicks went out and played the
basketball game the way that they needed to. Nicks win
one twenty four one thirteam and now they are the

(41:28):
NBA Cup champions.

Speaker 2 (41:30):
But I wanted to ask this, who was the NBA
Cup champions last year? Was it the Lakers? My point exactly,
will your team and you go? Was it the Lakers?
Not only that, what did that do for them in
the playoff?

Speaker 1 (41:42):
It didn't do nothing exactly exactly, So congratulations, you get money,
you get the prize, Take.

Speaker 6 (41:48):
That five and fifty thousand dollars and do something spectacular
for Christmins.

Speaker 2 (41:54):
There you go, you got good Christmas.

Speaker 6 (41:56):
Help help some community activations out don't have some folks.

Speaker 1 (42:02):
But now you sit and you wait for the end
of the season. We'll see where these teams are. I
expect the Knicks to be in the mix, but I
don't know about the Spurs. I do believe they'll make
the playoffs, but there's still some growing pains. What was
your takeaway from the game. You know what, when it
comes to the Spurs side of it.

Speaker 6 (42:22):
I just expected Castle, Fox, Vassel and Champagne to.

Speaker 1 (42:31):
Really play better than they did. The Guards did absolutely nothing.
They had the worst stat lines of any players on
the team. I said that Barnes was.

Speaker 6 (42:41):
Kind of the glue guy because he's a veteran. He
helps facilitate, didn't get the job done, and then I
shouted out our guy the Knicks, Bridges, and I'm thinking
Bridges is the third guy.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
Man Anna Noby went off. So I absolutely know nothing
about what was going on, and you ro.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
What happened.

Speaker 1 (43:10):
I just, man, it was like I never watched basketball before.
It was the complete opposite of everything that I ever said.

Speaker 6 (43:17):
I don't understand. So I'm putting myself on self and
post suspension.

Speaker 1 (43:25):
Because but hey, the first step is admitting you took
that first step. You you understood what you thought. You
did not understand. It hurts and wemby you know what
I didn't. It's not like I knew.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
Something was off, but something was off. You can visibly
tell that something.

Speaker 1 (43:51):
Was off again, trying to do too much down clutch
time when guys they were nine and three without you.
Don't forget that they were nine and three without you.
So therefore you don't have.

Speaker 2 (44:05):
To be the guy. You can be a guy, come
back and facilitate for your teammates. Never got in a
RYBN right.

Speaker 1 (44:13):
There were guys open late in the game during clutch
when you got back into it, they were missing late
in the game. I said I wouldn't go to him either.
Back then at that point, I.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
Said, once they got to it was one, five to
ninety seven, Mark, he's gonna shoot it.

Speaker 1 (44:30):
I said, if they can hit a three, they got
a chance to win this game. They hit the three
and cut it to five, they call the time out,
and then all of a sudden they get a steal
because Harper comes in and just plays like a man
possessed and putting pressure on on Bronson, get them to

(44:50):
turn it over. They come down and winby Jack's up
a three from damn near half courticulous, And I was
like that even if if, even if it was a
great shot and he made it, it was a bad shot, especially.

Speaker 2 (45:04):
From where your team was right and what they needed right.

Speaker 1 (45:08):
Just get to the rim. You take two steps and
you're already at the rim. So there's opportunities that were there.
Because one thing that I always try to tell my
son is look at the bonus. Look at the bonus,
because you know what happens when you're in the bonus.
You get to the free throw lot and the clock

(45:28):
stops for you to try to close out a game.
So if you are going to be able to do that,
look and see where the foul count is, look and
see where you can be and then attack the rim
last night. But that requires awareness and these are young
guys that are they're not borns.

Speaker 2 (45:50):
And I'm sure that Barnes was probably screaming it because.

Speaker 1 (45:53):
That's his job as a venture yep, call out everything
the coach would say out loud, so everybody knows.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
I think Deer and Fox disappeared too in that in
that fourth quarter.

Speaker 1 (46:05):
I mean, those are the guys that you're paying a
lot of money to to understand, Hey, we got a
chance to win this deal.

Speaker 2 (46:11):
Again. This doesn't mean the season's over.

Speaker 1 (46:13):
This doesn't mean that they're not gonna have a chance
to do something major this season. But those are those
moments that are are the growing pains of understanding what
this is. I saw our guy Grizzle SA Grizzle was
mad as hell about the coaching and the rotations that

(46:35):
he was using last night for the San Antonio Spurs,
because the Spurs were in a position, as we said,
they were in a better position than what they presented
to at the end of the game. They got outscored
in the fourth quarter thirty five to nineteen. With all
of those great players. Uh, I'm I'm gonna do my

(46:57):
booger McFarlane. You can't win games if you lose.

Speaker 2 (47:03):
Oh my god, that's a class shirt. You can't thank
you for that book, thank you for that booker, And.

Speaker 1 (47:12):
You cannot win games if you lose. I mean, there's
just so much that was desired for that game last night.
But congratulations to the New York Knicks. They Jalen Brunson
continues to be their superstar, continues to be clutch. You
look at that young point not point guard, but he
was another guard that came off the bench, Tyler Kolek.

(47:35):
He was making crucial plays at that time, and you're
sitting there like, who is this guy? I never knew
who he was. But what was the problem even know
where he went to college. What was the problem with
the Knicks last year in the playoffs?

Speaker 6 (47:49):
They didn't have people to come off the bench and
give them those quality minutes yep.

Speaker 1 (47:54):
And or at least going fifteen minutes in before the
game is over.

Speaker 2 (48:01):
They didn't have a they didn't have a Clarkson or
coleg Uh this year.

Speaker 1 (48:11):
Last year to come in and give uh Bridges and
Brunson and Heart a break. And and the guys that
they did have on the bench, they weren't performing. The
only one that was that was performing was McRae. Yep
so and mccrai didn't play last night. Yep Well, you
look at you look at what this team is, and

(48:32):
you brought up the two guys Clarkson and Colic. But
you also have to look at what again, what o
Janobili was able to do. He is clutch. He was
he was he understood his role. He got to the corner,
waited for them to kick the ball to him, and
he knocked and knocked it down. And he continues to

(48:52):
play basketball at a high level.

Speaker 4 (48:55):
He is uh.

Speaker 1 (48:56):
He is one of those guys that you look at
all the time and you're like you, you know, he's
gonna bring it every single game, whether he's missing shots,
he's gonna play default.

Speaker 2 (49:06):
You know, I got a.

Speaker 1 (49:06):
Problem with him because he's a small forward and he
sometimes he plays big two and he always comes in.
In the last three years since he came from Toronto's,
he's came in like thirty pounds overweight.

Speaker 6 (49:24):
He's got the Zion Williamson thing, like he needs to man,
he needs to well.

Speaker 1 (49:31):
He plays hisself in the shape. Yes, So I mean
I can't really bash him. And I'm not a weight
shamer anyway. I'm the last dude on this panel that
needs to be way shame anybody. I'm gonna all I
think about. I am a sited I like normally, I
like big people.

Speaker 2 (49:51):
But if you're playing.

Speaker 1 (49:53):
Small, Ford, Bro, you did not need to be thirty
five pounds over the playing weight. And now I'm gonna
play myself finish shape. Look, don't do that to your teammates.
But last night it didn't matter, right. He knocked it down. Yep,
and he was very He's very very consistent with that.
When we come back, we're gonna we're gonna hear from

(50:15):
Philip Rivers.

Speaker 2 (50:16):
He was miked up the other day.

Speaker 1 (50:19):
Yeah. And then we will try to figure out who
is your pick if you had to pack a house
on it, who would be your pick to win the
Super Bowl. We'll talk about it right here on the
morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone
and always free on the iHeartRadio app. Welcome back to
the morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen

(50:40):
hundred The Zone. Make sure you stay locked in all
day long as the voice of the Texas Longhorns Craig Way.
He will be hosting The Craigway Show from two to
five pm. He'll also give you a chance to win
a pair of tickets multiple pair of tickets to tonight's
UH Texas women versus Northwestern State basketball game. It's almost

(51:04):
time for kids to be out of school, so take
your kids to a basketball game. Enjoy crowd because it
is the number two ranked team in the country. All right,
let's get into the Super Bowl. And I know we
got big matchup tomorrow night. We got the Seattle Seahawks
and the LA Rams, the battle for the NFC West.

(51:25):
Whoever wins this game will be well, they're both gonna
be a lock to get into the playoffs. But you
want to have home field advantage throughout the playoffs, so
you're gonna do everything you possibly can to be there.
But when you look across the NFL and you look
at all of the teams and the expectations right now,

(51:46):
who would you say you would pick as the Super
Bowl champion When it's all said and done.

Speaker 2 (51:53):
Man, it's hard to go against the Rams. They got everything.

Speaker 1 (51:57):
Even with Davonts Vonte Adams being injured right now, I
still see the Rams as a team that they're very
diverse and they're good at everything. They're good at special teams,
they're good at defense, they're good at the running game,
they're good at the past game, short game, long game,
Like where's the weakness. So like, that's a team that

(52:21):
you and they have skins on the wall. They have
beat some good teams. That makes you say, oh, yeah,
they did knock them off. Nah, I'm not going against them. Yep,
it's not a bad pick. I mean they are if
you are at DraftKings, they are plus three twenty to

(52:41):
win the Super Bowl. The Seattle Seahawks, who I have
to tip my cap to that front office, to Sam Darnell,
Jackson Smith and jigbu is probably the best wide receiver
in the game, and no one is truly talking about
them on on.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
A level that we're at. You know, there is the
best guy.

Speaker 1 (53:04):
He is the best and that relationship that he's already
formed with Sam Darnel is something to talk about. The
Denver Broncos. The Denver Broncos shout out to Kenny. You
you look at this Broncos football team and what have
you noticed about them continue to get better. Their defense

(53:25):
is one of the most elite that is out there.
You look at those numbers and how they stop teams
and more importantly, how they win games. They win games
and clutch in the fourth quarter. They take you to
the deep end and they play with toughness. They punk
you out. There's a bunch of teams that you know.

(53:46):
I say Texas North because they have seven players longhorns
on that team, and one of the guys that they
have on that team is not he was not a
superstar pick and and.

Speaker 6 (54:00):
Le Jordan Humphrey is running around blocking defensive backs and
getting in the way of linebackers so they can't get
to the setting. When Sutton makes a pass, he's like
a basketball player out there screening people off and.

Speaker 1 (54:18):
It gives you another fifteen yards to run. If you're
an elite wide receiver, like it's just a bonus to
have somebody like that that plays selfless football because he
don't always get the ball.

Speaker 2 (54:30):
He got a touchdown this week, but.

Speaker 1 (54:32):
He got a touchdown because of a bust to coverage
and it left him one on one with a cornerback.
He's six four to two twenty Yep. He just ran
over that dude and ran scored.

Speaker 2 (54:44):
So like, they have.

Speaker 1 (54:45):
Weapons that become even better weapons if you make a mistake.

Speaker 2 (54:50):
Unless everybody don't have that, AFC is just wide open.

Speaker 10 (54:53):
Though, if you really think about it, the top teams
in AFC don't have a lot of playoff experience, and
it's like it should be the Bills year, but it's
like the top teams in AFC.

Speaker 2 (55:06):
You can put your trust, bet your house. I can't
be That's my point. That's my point. That's why I
said the AFC is so wide open.

Speaker 10 (55:13):
It is because the top teams are basically young and inexperienced,
while the Bills is the only expexperienced team, which I'm
not putting all my trust in them.

Speaker 1 (55:24):
Also, well, here, if you're gonna go with the best
quarterback in the AFC, you gotta go with Josh Allen
because he is the reigning MVP. He went into New
England and beat New England. You look at the Patriots.
The Patriots are sitting at eleven and three. What I
was saying about the Denver Broncos, they've won eleven straight games,

(55:46):
eleven straight games, and they are twelve and two.

Speaker 2 (55:50):
I'm scared of the Patriots.

Speaker 1 (55:52):
Yeah, well, the Patriots are the team that scared me
because when they're clicking, Denver in Seattle are the only
teams that are equal to them.

Speaker 2 (56:03):
Everybody else good luck. They got a power.

Speaker 1 (56:06):
Renning game, they got a speed renting game. They play
special teams pretty damn good.

Speaker 6 (56:11):
And when it comes to defense, they have rabril yep,
like that defense is nasty. They always try their best
to take away your greatest strength and make somebody else
beat you, and they do a good job of it.

Speaker 1 (56:28):
Are you Are you? If you are any team out there,
are you afraid of the Pittsburgh Steelers at all?

Speaker 4 (56:34):
No?

Speaker 2 (56:35):
Yeah, I'm not. I'm only afraid of Houston because that
defense is so deadly. Winner of six in a row.

Speaker 1 (56:42):
Jacksonville, winner of five in a row, are sitting at
them next AFC South. They are ten and four, winner
of five in a row. And like I said, the Texans,
who are one of the better teams in the league,
are nine and five, and they're getting better and they're
getting stronger on the defensive side of the ball.

Speaker 4 (57:00):
C J.

Speaker 1 (57:00):
Stroud looks like he's getting more and more comfortable. We
had Mark Vandermere on and he was loving what he's seeing.
But here's the wild card. It's the Indianapolis Colts. This
was a team that we thought were going to win
the division. They went and it went out, yeah, well
this guy want donet want dirt on him, and that's
Philip Rivers. They went and got old man Rivers to

(57:21):
come back and and play for the Indianapolis Colts. And
like I said yesterday, he definitely he did better than
a lot of folks thought he.

Speaker 2 (57:32):
Was going to.

Speaker 4 (57:40):
I got so much to you man.

Speaker 2 (57:42):
Great job, man, pretty great place to play football.

Speaker 1 (57:50):
He's back on the field, miked up, ready to go,
and you know he was out there, gosh, dang it,
get off me. Don't be coming over here. My kids
are here, my grand baby's here. You know, he's just
one of those quarterbacks that understands. Always liked him. He
was always one of my favorite quarterbacks. And here's one
of the things too. We didn't get a chance to
talk about this, but Marcus and I found this audio

(58:13):
from Chase Daniel and now more people are picking this up.
He did something that was unprecedented. We know how many
kids he's got. He's got a bunch of kids out there,
eight of them to be exact, and in order for
him to come back, he got his insurance back. NFL insurance.

(58:35):
After you're done five years, your insurance goes away.

Speaker 2 (58:38):
You still have to do it.

Speaker 1 (58:40):
You still get to pay, but you pay more now
with him being back on the field, him starting in
the game, his insurance has paid for another five years
for all of his kids and him.

Speaker 2 (58:52):
Wow, talk about a business. That's a win.

Speaker 1 (58:55):
That's because remember I was like, man, he's pushing back
his Hall of Fame opportunity. So what exactly if.

Speaker 6 (59:04):
He exactly, I'm gonna tell you right now, my wife
is listening to the show.

Speaker 1 (59:11):
If I got my insurance paid for it, bro, that's.

Speaker 2 (59:14):
An house mortgage exactly, trust me. And I know you
know if he comes back at the age of forty nine,
then we know we know then we know he's just
here for the insurance. That is wild to me.

Speaker 1 (59:29):
When when I heard that, I was like, man, I
can't believe he's doing this. He's pushing back his his
Hall of Fame speech and all this other stuff. And
they're like, he did something that was genius, and that
was comeback to get health insurance. What they didn't tell
you is because he knew when he was coming back
he was gonna need that health insurance because of the

(59:50):
after life and epit.

Speaker 4 (59:53):
But he is in it.

Speaker 2 (59:54):
I want him to stay out of one of those
like whatever you need to do, stop, Like I joke
the round with him trying to run the other day.

Speaker 1 (01:00:03):
And he didn't go nowhere. But he don't need to
do that, Like throw it away, man, take the penalty, yeap,
Like you want to stay on the field and you
don't want to get hit by one of those big
six four two hundred and eighty pounds defensive linemen that
are beaming down on you because you tried to exit
the pocket. You want to make sure that you are

(01:00:24):
able to enjoy that insurance instead of always using using
for the kids, using that premium that deductible has been
met after he got hit in the rims. Lord, when
we come back, we'll have the world's Strongest Man bringing
you his World's strongest take right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred to Zone and

(01:00:46):
always free on the iHeartRadio app. You heard the bea dropping,
It only mean one thing. W W Hall of Famer,
World's strongest Man. D Mark Henry brings you his world's
strongest take. Take it away, big fellow, hard what's up?

Speaker 2 (01:01:01):
You know what time it is.

Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man. My guess back then they didn't know. Now
I'm hot, stay all on me. Well, guys, we don't
do this often, but today is that day. We're gonna

(01:01:25):
talk about the fight game terms. Crawford announced that he's
retiring from boxing.

Speaker 4 (01:01:32):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
He said that he doesn't have anything left.

Speaker 1 (01:01:36):
He's won five division championships, guys in three different weight classes,
and there's others that have done it. Cornelo done it,
He destroyed Carnelo Ford, Mayweather done it, and just like

(01:01:57):
Spence call Crawford, he retired undefeated. He had many many
fights where he didn't get the money that Floyd Mayweather got.
He didn't get the big bill money like Connor McGregor

(01:02:20):
or the guy that he beat Cornello. And for a
guy that did all of this, At first, I was like,
come on, man, you still got a lot left. But

(01:02:42):
he's been delegated to having to take fights with people
like Jake Paul in order to make a big prize
fight where he'll get twenty or thirty million for one fight.
My take is this.

Speaker 6 (01:03:00):
Off of this retiring not because he doesn't have anything
left to prove. He's retiring because he wants to prove
to the moneymakers in boxing that I deserve that money
and the fans are gonna clamor for it.

Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
And you watch hard start the clock, Marcus, start the clock.

Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
This man will be fighting next year and it'll be
for about thirty five million dollars in one with one
of these people. Because nobody's gonna pay Vegas all that
money and they not getting to see the best boxer
in the world. He's got to either a horrible agent

(01:03:53):
or there's something about his style that makes people say, ah, man,
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
Not enough flair. He's a great boxer.

Speaker 1 (01:04:06):
He's won in world championships in three different classes, and
naturally he weighs about one sixty but he always goes down.
I think that if you can convince him to stay
at one sixty, one sixty five, and then the big

(01:04:27):
money makers in Vegas say, listen, you was right, we apologized,
we low shot you. We're gonna do a guarantee two fights.
Can we get two fights for sixty five seventy million.
He go, all right, I'm out of retirement. Watch that's
my take. We'll say you Well, I'm just curious to

(01:04:49):
why he doesn't have better promotion. I know that's that's
what it comes down to. De la Joya. You talked
about Canelo. You don't have his personality. His personality is
very you're in talk.

Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Yeah, but I'm talking about your promotional team is there
for you.

Speaker 1 (01:05:05):
They can only do so much. They can't get in
the ring and put flair on his game. Well, his
game is flair enough. Yeah, we're knocking everybody. But Floyd
talked the game too. Canelo. He challenged guys, and he
told you on his country that I'm going to beat

(01:05:25):
you up. Country was upset when uh, but we all
know Connor McGregor is Conda McGregor. He's not that, So
it's a harder sell. So that's just the only That's
just the way I see it. And I think that

(01:05:46):
he shouldn't have to though. He's good enough. You don't
have to be Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard. You don't
have to beat them. You don't have to be Mike
take them. We can eat from children.

Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
You don't have to do. Give the guys money. I
want to still see him fight. Yeah, I'm a I'm
a big bug Crawford fan. What's thirty five million to Vegas?

Speaker 1 (01:06:17):
All of the top hotels could say, hey, we'll throw
a hand a million. We want him here because we
all make money when he's here.

Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
That simple math.

Speaker 10 (01:06:29):
Well, Terry's biggest two paydays were his last two fights. Yep,
after he left top rank. That's when he started making
bigger money fights when they were paying him cheeto money. Yeah,
but when he got to his last two fights, he
made twenty five mil against Aerol Spence and against Canelo.
It was actually it was reported at first he was
going to get ten mil, but the after everything closed down,

(01:06:52):
it was closer to fifty mil.

Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
So he finished his last couple of fights with one
hundred million dollars. But here's the deal. At the end
of the day, to your point, he is box office.
He is if you're and then the problem is the
boxing purists know that those people are the ones that
know who the true g is in his business, and

(01:07:14):
he's he's had a hard time getting fights even when
he was a young guy because they know he.

Speaker 2 (01:07:21):
Hands exactly.

Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
And as I said, I'm a big, big fan of
what he's been able to do. I've watched every one
of his fights, and for him, the the technical part
of it. My my wife's uncle trains him, trained him
for a long time. He goes and stays with him
at the Air Force Academy all the time. Whenever he's

(01:07:45):
got a fight going on, he's staying with Uncle Al
and working out with Uncle Al. Because yeah, yeah, he
knows exactly what he's doing. He said, the first time
he's done this, and he gives you all the smoke.

Speaker 2 (01:07:59):
Do you think it all so?

Speaker 10 (01:08:00):
Is the fact that he's from Nebraska instead of a
highly known like Dallas or.

Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
One of the fight.

Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
Yeah, maybe maybe there's a little discrimination for sure.

Speaker 6 (01:08:15):
I mean, even like during the Olympic trials, like, uh,
he ended up not being the guy yep, because he
beat the guy that was a champion at one of
the leading championships, but then he lost in the Olympic trials,
and is yeah, you know, he was never was as

(01:08:37):
far as the Olympic thing went.

Speaker 1 (01:08:40):
And now, as we talked about, he comes out and
goes forty two and oh continued thirty one KOs thirty
one KOs and continues to be a draw for a
lot of people. So it will be interesting to see,
you know, do you.

Speaker 6 (01:08:59):
Talk tons, you'll get the money watch. They're gonna come
up with it. It'll probably be against Jake Paul though,
something like that. You know, That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
This has turned it into a mockery because ain't nobody
really knocking that fool out Anthony Joshua.

Speaker 2 (01:09:13):
Though this weekend we shall.

Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
See great take by the world's strongest man. We're gonna
close out the show and send you to Dan Patrick.
We're gonna hear from Texas women's basketball players Rory Harmon
and of coach coach Vick Schaeffer and Madison Booker right
here on the morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen
hundred Zone and always free on the iHeart Radio app.

(01:09:38):
Special thanks to our guy Danny Davis of the Austin
American Statesman, always coming through and bringing us some funny moments.
We're gonna give you a chance to give us some
funny moments as well. Get over to AM thirteen hundred
the Zone on the iHeart Radio app and leave the

(01:09:58):
keyword of the day, Pa Paint is the keyword of
the day. For a chance to win a pair of
tickets to go to the women's basketball game tonight at
the Moody Center, and Danny said, it's not a big
time matchup, but it's a big opportunity for you to
go over there and watch the game. Shout out to

(01:10:19):
our guy, Dereck George as he was talking about as
we were talking about Philip Rivers and what he brings
to the table and about the insurance, he said he
needs to be the next speaker at an Affleck convention
about how to bring the duck with him.

Speaker 2 (01:10:34):
Bring the duck with him.

Speaker 1 (01:10:37):
Speaking of basketball, the women are back on the court tonight.
Texas women will be taking on Northwestern State and coach
Vic Shaeffer got a chance to talk to stephen A.

Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
Smith.

Speaker 1 (01:10:52):
Believe it or not, he was on the Stephen A.
Smith Show talking about his point guard and Mark's favorite player,
Rory hart Man.

Speaker 11 (01:11:01):
She's again to me, she's the best in the country
seven to one assist to turnover ratio right now. She
had fourteen assists two nights ago and I think one turnover.
She's finally, you know, getting back to her old form.
She had an injury two years ago. Last year she
came back from that injury, still was really good. But

(01:11:23):
just those stats that you just read off, think about
how special that is, how hard that is to do.
Over thirteen hundred points, over eight hundred assists, she's the
all time assist player and still has twenty maybe thirty
games left in her She's going to separate herself where

(01:11:44):
that record is never going to be broken.

Speaker 4 (01:11:47):
But had the game.

Speaker 11 (01:11:48):
Winner against South Carolina out in Vegas, had twenty six
the night before against UCLA. And they've got a really
good point guard in Kicky Rice, and we have a
tremendous amount of respect for But Rory has really really
playing well.

Speaker 4 (01:12:04):
She's back to her old self before she got hurt.

Speaker 11 (01:12:08):
Runs a team, knows how to knows when she needs
to maybe score, and then knows when you know what
tonight's tonight where I need to get the ball, the
book to Jordan Lee, get it to our two bigs inside.

Speaker 4 (01:12:20):
She's just another really smart, heady kid.

Speaker 1 (01:12:23):
And not only that, these two Jordan Lee, Jordan Lee
has been playing outstanding. But you look at what Rory
Harmon and Madison Booker are as the players that they are.
But they're also understanding of their relationship and how they
continue to grow as a team.

Speaker 12 (01:12:42):
Iron sharpens iron, and I'm looking at two of the
best of the best within college basketball right now. What
about you all works so well as a pair?

Speaker 13 (01:12:51):
I think I just talked about Madison and her triple
number one. That's just such a big deal, Like when
you get a triple double like that, Like, I think
that's just a big deal, and it just it shows
how hard you're playing, and it's very I feel like
you could see it when me and Madison are like
paired together, like we're almost like in sync. Like I
think that we're unbeatable, and I think that it pours

(01:13:12):
into our teammates a lot. And so that's just something
that we need to do consistently throughout the whole year,
and I think we'll be just fun.

Speaker 12 (01:13:19):
What incentivizes an already great team to be even greater?
I think, you know, you want to focus on the details.
You know, helpside taking a charge. That's also detail for
us too, you know, being in steal, denying the ball.
I think also the word I kind of want to
say for this team is enjoying, Like just enjoying a
game of basketball is kind of like what you say,

(01:13:40):
like Irons, just not for us, but with our teammates,
with our practice guys too, with our coaches.

Speaker 2 (01:13:45):
So I think, you know, just this whole staff, this
whole program is.

Speaker 4 (01:13:49):
We're enjoying a game of basketball.

Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
Shout out to Ari Chambers for that interview with Madison Booker,
and of course Rory Harmon, and shout out to Stephen A.

Speaker 2 (01:13:59):
Smith for interviewing.

Speaker 6 (01:14:02):
Smith finally ran into somebody that could have talking, but hey,
he kept going mm hmm.

Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
Yeah, he couldn't get in. It was like double dutch.
You ever seen somebody doing double dutch?

Speaker 4 (01:14:16):
Steve.

Speaker 2 (01:14:16):
Steve was like this. He just couldn't get in. Big name,
like twelve things in like one minute. Yeah, Yeah, it
was awful. I love it because that's the reality of it.

Speaker 1 (01:14:28):
I mean, when when you got a chance to watch
a special player and we know the trials and tribulations
in which she was able to come through and where
she is right now, she's got that smile on her face.
She's enjoying the game. Once they I mean, everybody's gonna
be happy when you're undefeated. When you went in and undefeated, yes,
but playing against ranked teams and dominating and dominating them. Yeah,

(01:14:51):
you know that you have something special when when you
look at this Texas women's basketball team. Yes, we can
talk about Rory Harmon, we can talk about Madison Booker,
but you look at the emergence of what you're seeing
from a Jordan Lee, what she's been able to bring
to the table. You look at Kyla Oldacre and what
she's been Justice Carlton is one of the most underrated

(01:15:14):
players on this team. And I say that factitiously because
of the fact that she is getting back to coming
back off of her injury. We didn't understand what coach
vic was talking about when how good she really.

Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
Really can be.

Speaker 1 (01:15:30):
And now they're getting that Justice Carlton that they thought
they were going to give when they recruited her. We
still have the injury to Aleah Crump, but you bring
in a Brion Cunningham and what she's been able to do.
You still have the injury to Brianna Preston, but you're
getting ancillary pieces to step up and understand. Like coach said,

(01:15:51):
Rory knows when she has to score and when she's
just facilitate. She's got scorers on this team where she
doesn't have to be the main source.

Speaker 10 (01:16:00):
When you got a team like that, you're just so
deep in every position across the board. This is Vic
Shaeffer problems. And they played multiple positions. They can do
some different thing.

Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
That's crazy.

Speaker 1 (01:16:12):
Speaking of doing different things, last chance right mark for
a lot of people to get over to the Austin
Sports Awards, Doc last Chance. I mean, you got a
few out, you got an hour or two, So come
on out to the Austin Sports Awards.

Speaker 2 (01:16:26):
You can go to Austin Sports Awards dot com is
gonna I can use you know what, Just drop my name,
Just drop my name and they gonna give you.

Speaker 6 (01:16:38):
They're gonna give you the Ken discount.

Speaker 2 (01:16:42):
Yeah, they're gonna answer me out the back, not the fact.
And it's at the Junior League of Austin.

Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
So that's like yes, right down the roads fifty three
thirty bluff Stone Lane, Austin, Texas, seven eighty seven five nine.

Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
There you go.

Speaker 1 (01:16:55):
So come on through and if you have something that
has my life on it, I will sign it for you.
I Am not gonna turn you down hard nose.

Speaker 4 (01:17:06):
Like we do them.

Speaker 6 (01:17:06):
We do our Saturday morning festivities before the games I've
never told anybody no.

Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
Have you ever seen me say no? Have I wanted
you to?

Speaker 1 (01:17:17):
I know you wanted me to, because guys like, if
