basketball season has.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Now come to an end.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Unfortunately, Tuesday, goodbye, Yes today day. I wish we could
go back in time, man change the outcome as Texas
falls to Xavier eighty six to eighty in the playing
game for the University of Texas in Dayton, Ohio, mark

(02:55):
which it might. It might as well have been a
home game for Date with all the.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Cincinnata for Xavier, all these Cincinnati people.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Bro, I made that drive. My wife is from Cincinnati.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
I've driven up the date twenty times and it is
about a fifty miles drive, right, Unless it was that
was a home.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
Game, yeah, well, and Dayton.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Was playing in the NIT, right, so everybody was at home,
like everybody was doing their thing. They were playing at
their game, So everybody was trying to figure out.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
There were plenty of tickets, is what you were saying.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Twelve thousand people were in attendance for that game. Twelve
twelve thousand, five hundred and forty six to be exact.
That showed up for that basketball game last night. It
was loud, It was rackets. Texas came out and was
playing great basketball at the very beginning. They were physical,
they were moving around and and they were hitting their

(03:54):
open shots. They went to halftime, it was forty seven
to thirty nine.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
They drank the kool aid. It was starting to close
the gap.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
They closed the gap, close the gap, and then all
of a sudden, no time.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Out, and it was the time out. I'm just asking
the question, where was the time out? It wasn't called there.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Sometimes you let people play through it, though, sometimes you
gotta let people play through it.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
If there is no tomorrow, you call the time out.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
They got the same pay as as we did. You
get paid to call the timeout. You get paid this.
Tell Trey Johnson stopped making the booboo face. When we
don't draw a play up for you.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Keep playing you got You get paid not to play,
not to lose, but to keep winning hard.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
They start player had three fouls in the third quarter.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
The first ten plays I would have drawn up would
have been right to his neck because you're gonna not
get as much defense from him because he's got three foules.
He ended up with four files. He played another five
to eight minutes with four files.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
It ain't no way.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Every player I made would have been towards him and
off of him. A screen roll off of him to
kick it out the tray tray. Go get ready, Colomba
and Mark are finna doce some inside magic and we're
gonna get the ball. We're gonna go right at at
the big man. I cap thirty two. I forget his
name now, that's how important he.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Is to me.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
But the whole point was fremantle. Fremantle there you go.
I would have put him on the mantle. He'd have
been on the bench. That's where he would have been.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
And I'm nobody loves coach Terry Moore than me. And
I mean when he got when he signed on as
a head coach of Texas, I went there.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
We were there, yeah, because I.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Was very happy that the University of Texas put him
in the position that he took. That's a big deal
to be a head coach at the University of Texas,
especially with.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
So many quality coaches out there. And I'm sure that
you know, the Texas people that didn't want Rodney Terry
here are having a celebration today. I believe in not
letting people have a celebration on off off of my demise,
and you know that that game just didn't help any

(06:48):
I mean, it is it is something to behold. I mean,
this has been a tumultuous season. I guess you would say, uh,
Texas finished the year nineteen and sixteen, not a good number.
And so after the game, Rodney Terry addressed a failure

(07:10):
of not the season, but of this game, but he
still is proud of his players.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Well, for one, I'm really proud of these guys. I
said in the locker room after the game. How much
it's been a joy and pleasure to work with these
guys each and every day. You know, through the highs
through the lows, they really turned into everyday guys in
terms of being consistent with great attitudes and a great
approach every day.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Through their hard work.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
They were warranted an opportunity to be in this great
tournament and play at this great venue tonight. And I
thought they handed themselves well. Although we had one of
our better first halves of the year. I thought we
came out in the second half. We knew that they
were gonna come with the run. We will stood their run,
and it still had had a little bit of separation,

(08:00):
throw down the stretch.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Give them credit.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
They made big plays, big shots and finished the game
down the stretch and ended up winning this ball game.
Sean's a really good coach. They have a really good team.
But I'm proud of my guys, and I love these
guys and I love all heart.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
They compete it.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
For myself each and every day and nothing to hang
our heads up, nothing to hang our hits.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
About it all.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
And you know, that's what we expected to hear from Rodney.
He's a stand up guy. He's a classy guy, and
he's been nothing but rejoiceful for this team and what
they've been able to do.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
But the results were the results. You know.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
We can talk about the fact that this wasn't a
good healthy year for this basketball team. They can talk
about the fact that certain things didn't go their way
because of the conference, whatever it may be. But the
fact remain is Texas had a thirteen point lead again
in a ball game and they ended up losing the

(09:02):
ball game because to your point, Mark, they were taking
reckless shots in bad situations, and it wasn't attacking and
getting to the free throw line, and there was so
many other ways that Texas could have won this game.
They got to the free throw line of shot twenty
four free throws. They shot seventy five percent from the
free throw line. Yeah, but during the clutch time there

(09:27):
was a lot of shots that were missed down the
stretch and to your point, also should have been able
to attack the rim even more than what they did.
Kendall Weaver played unbelievable when he was on the court.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
Defensively, he was everywhere.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
He was making plays and you could hear the announcers
talking about him. That is the part that disappoints me
is that we're not going to get a chance to
see that.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Young man play again.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Why not go to him? Like where was the law?
I told you where that live? But where where's the
down cut? Never put him in the dunk, put him
under the basket, run a screen toward him so he
can get inside.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
He's a tough guy.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, like the stuff that I felt like when layups
were not taken. Well, you know, there's still a lot
to unravel about this, and when we come back in
the next segment, we're gonna continue the conversation about exactly
where this season went wrong and how it all breaks down.

(10:38):
But we're also at seven thirty two or seven thirty four,
we're gonna talk to Eric Henry of Horns twenty four
to seven. He was actually there and he's got a
tweak that is out there that we're gonna talk about
about that locker room and how the feeling was after
the game.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
We're just getting started here. This this, I guess.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
You would say mournful Thursday morning for the Texas basketball
team and the season being over. We will continue to
discussions about the expectations and what is possibly next for
this basketball team. We'll talk about it right here on
the morning kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff right

(11:24):
here on Sports radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It
is a tough day to be a Texas Longhorns men's
basketball supporter because they ended up coming up short and
a lot of folks and speculations are out there talking
about the job security of one Rodney Terry. There's a

(11:45):
report by CBS Sports and Horns twenty four to seven.
Chip Brown, who y'all used to hear right here on
sports radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, has a report
that is out there that this may be the end
of the road for one Rodney Terry for the Texas

(12:05):
Longhorns as the head coach. Obviously, right after the games,
the emotions are real raw, and there's a lot of
speculation that goes with this. And let's talk about the
season as a whole for a while. There were some
times where folks were talking about the possibility of RT

(12:27):
being let go at the end of the season.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
But he just went out there and did his job.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
And you know, he's a big believer in faith and
what's been going on.

Speaker 5 (12:36):
So.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
As expected, he always takes the high road in those
particular moments.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
But Mark, you and I.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Have been talking about this basketball team obviously all season long,
the expectations, the ups and downs, the losing streaks, and
how they come out of it. But it's always gone
back to the fact of the matter of the team
was never healthy, The team was never in the right

(13:06):
frame of mind when you bring in all these different entities,
And it started at the very beginning of the year
at the first press conference, you know, someone asked, how
long does it take for your team to jail? How
long does it take for you to get everybody where
they need to be and the decisions throughout this year,
I mean, you.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
Start looking at it.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
They lose that first game against Ohio State, then they
win three games at four, five games, five games in
a row, and then they played Delaware State.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
They win that game, so we're six.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Then we play n C State, go on the road
to Raleigh and win that. That's seven straight wins. They
were up to seven and one, right, Well, then you
get the loss to Yukon at home. Then you go
on you play New Mexico State in Arkansas Pine Bluff,
and then New Orleans, then Northwestern State, and then all

(13:57):
everybody's like, well all right, now we're really about to
see what's about to happen, because now we're getting into
SEC play.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
You go on the road, you lose to Texas A
and M.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
You play Auburn here, get your head beat in not
really beat, but it was eighty seven eighty two, but
it was one of those crazy comebacks again right like
you had to battle.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
To the always one of those, it was always one.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
Then you play Tennessee, you play them tough, you lose
that game seventy four to seventy. You beat Oklahoma, and
then you played Florida. You get beat down at Florida,
which now we see how good Florida truly is. You
lose that game, then you beat Missouri, beat Texas A
and M, then you lose to Old miss You beat LSU,

(14:42):
lose to Arkansas, lose to Vanderbilt in an ugly fashion.
Then you get run out the gym at home, and
this is where it started. You lose to Alabama one
to oh, three to eighty. But then you come back
and you beat Kentucky and you're like, oh, here we go.
But you lose to a bad South Carolina basketball team.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
You go to overtime with Arkansas, lose that game.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
You lose to a bad Georgia basketball team that ends
up getting into the tournament, but they weren't what everybody
thought they were going to be, right.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
And then you continue to look at it.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
You lose to Oklahoma last home game, Trey Johnson doesn't
play well, but you find ways to win games. End
up in the NCAA, I mean, the SEC tournament, and
I'm like, they're in, man, they're in, and they get
in and then they end up losing in the playing game,
and folks start to really question if the leadership is

(15:44):
in the right place. We've talked about it before. You know, financially,
basketball is not making a lot of money as far
as bringing in and being able to recruit those types
of players that obviously are looking for a bag. It's
been a little difficult, right, so you start to try
to try to understand what's going on. Well, now we're here.

(16:04):
Now we're at that moment in time where folks are
really asking the question, should he be the leader in
this moment?

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Well, you also have the situation where there's about seven
seven of those guys that are seniors. They're going they're
going to other places, or they're going their college careers
will be over and they'll be striving to take it
to the next level in the pros. There's gonna be

(16:35):
a bag waiting for other players to come here. Hopefully
we don't make the mistake of getting a top heavy
class of seniors and we get guys that we can
build over a couple of years and then maybe you
bring in one superstar.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
But having a case may be Prior and Cody.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
I wish I would have got to see them play more,
because you know, like those are guys you want to
stay here but there's no guarantee that they will.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Well, it was well that's the problem. That's what we
got to figure out.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
But there was a moment in the game where Jordan
Pope was taken out of the game and DJ and
I were talking about it. He's like, man, I don't
even I don't see him in the game at this
particular moment where we needed him. So Rodney Terry was
asked about Jordan Pope and why he was pulled out
of the game at that particular moment.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Well, we had four turnovers at the half.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
I thought we did a pretty good job of taking
care of the basketball. We need their team that's gonna
load to the ball. Anytime you drive, you got to
hit the open guy. You know, three of our turnovers
in the first half was because of driving in there,
and they got their hands on some balls.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
I thought in the second half, you know, for a.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
Better part of it, we did a pretty good job
of taking care of the basketball. Just give a take
care there. You know, we had a maybe a basketball
to turn over, you know, and things. But I thought
down the stretch when I was talking with Jordan, it
was more about, you.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
Know, keeping his head in the game.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
He picked up his third file pretty quickly there, and
we had to take him out and wanted him to
stay locked in the game, you know, and ready for
us at any call for an opportunity to come in
and continue to help us in this game. So you know,
that's that's basically what I was talking to him about.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
And there was a moment that you're sitting there saying, Okay,
there's a lot of people turning over basketball, but was
there something you saw Mark? Yeah, that was Mark made
a really good defensive play and got him the ball.
And then Mark was wide open and he took a
shot and it was a challenge shot when he could

(18:48):
have made the pass. So I think that was like, hey, man,
play basketball. Quit trying to be a star and come
over here and sit next to me and tell you
can understand that. And that works, but you got to
put them back in the game. Yeah, you gotta win
the game.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
And then like, don't don't hold the grid, man, you're
shooting yourself in the foot if you decide to discipline
somebody in the last game of the season in the playoffs, Like,
if I'm gonna make a point to discipline you, it's
gonna be early in the year, and I'm gonna remind you, Hey,
you remember what happened early in the year, right, Let's

(19:28):
don't do that.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
Get out there and play man. Yeah it's not a
good look.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
But here's what Rodney Terry said about the direction of
the program and what the expectations are.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
Well.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
I think at the end of the day, I think
you always control what you can control. You know, we
were excited, we were excited about beating in this tournament.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
I thought we had a team that was playing.

Speaker 4 (19:51):
Really well and capable of making a really good run.
Here got off to you know, one of our better
halves of the year. I mean, first half was terrific,
but we near again. As you play this game, that's
always Ebben flowing as always runs.

Speaker 6 (20:05):
You know.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
I think when when everything's said and done, I think
you always think the guys that that have laid it
on the line for you every night, and and that
was our players. They did it every day for me.
They did it every night for me. There's not one
guy in that room I wouldn't do anything for the
rest of their lives. And uh uh. I think when
you talk about, you know, evaluating the season, you do

(20:25):
that when the dust settles, you know, and just like
you would after any season. So uh, I'm sure there'll
be an opportunity. Well, we'll get a chance to sit
down and talk about the season and and what our
thoughts are, uh, what our thoughts were about the season
and and uh and you kind of go with it
from there.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
Huh yeah, well, huh, that's right. You gotta keep coaching
to win the game.

Speaker 5 (20:52):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
I think that he did a good job at times
of of keeping everybody calm, but sometimes you just gotta
tell people, hey, look, we're in a point where we
got to make players.

Speaker 6 (21:07):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
Yeah, if you're not gonna go out there and make
a play, then come sit next to me.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Yeah it is.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
You know, you said, and you think about everything that
has transpired over the last few years. The way that
he got the job, he was the assistant coach. Unfortunately,
Chris Beard's situation happened. He took the team to the playoff,
I mean to the Elite eight at that time, just
two three years ago he went to the Elite eight.

(21:38):
And now he was a round of six, round of
thirty two. Now he had a play in game and
then get it done. And now the speculation is there's
gonna be some movement on.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
The forty acres.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
We'll talk to Eric Henry of Horror twenty four to
seven coming up next to discuss that, and I want
to know what it was like in that locker.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
Room right after the game. We'll continue these.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Conversations right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. The Texas Longhorns come up
a little bit short in the first play in matchup
of the season. Texas falls eighty six to eighty and
our guy, Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven,

(22:23):
was boots on the ground and he's making his way
back to Austin as we speak. He was there, he
saw it firsthand. E what's going on, bro, First of
come morning.

Speaker 5 (22:35):
Appreciate y'all having me on as always.

Speaker 7 (22:36):
Yeah, I'm in the middle of Atlanta Hartsfield Airport trying
to find a quiet spot. But definitely was a rough
night for the Longhorns last night and dating and the
season ended as a result.

Speaker 1 (22:45):
And so you were there, you got to see it
up close and personal. First half, Texas seemed to have
the right antidote for what Xavier was lacking and that
was They're a great three point shooting team going into
the game, they were ranked seventh in the country, but
they were off early in that game. But they ended

(23:06):
up shooting almost fifty percent from three point land forty
eight percent to be exact, and it got hot at
the right time in the second half. And Texas had
no answers for that.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
Yeah, hard.

Speaker 7 (23:18):
You know what was really interesting about that game, and
this is what I took down in my notes in
the first half, was that one of the big struggles
for Rodney Terry and his club was for the Longhorn
to match the opponent's intensity, right master energy matter, intensity
from the jump, especially in SEP play. Well, what impressed me,
and I'm sure you guys noticed this that was not
a neutral environment.

Speaker 6 (23:38):
That was a road.

Speaker 7 (23:40):
Game, protected being at the ug Arena, Cleveland, SUPA, Cincinnati
being about an hour away. So the fact that Texas
handled everything that Sean Miller and Dager threw with them
right at the fast Face Club. They like to shoot three,
they like to get up and down the floor. Texas
had an answer. I was really impressed with the way
they came out. But as you noticed, one of the

(24:00):
big things was just Texas shots weren't falling in the
second half. That's a shot fifty eight percent in the
first half, the second half issues thirty eight percent. The
second thing is they did a good job on Daghbor's
two big time scores in back freemantle of Ryan Conwell.
But then you allow a reserve reserve guard who have

(24:21):
was a seven point five points per game to exclore
for twenty two fifteen in the second half. That really
kind of fell the end.

Speaker 6 (24:27):
Of technics receason e.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
I really believe that sometimes you got to stop the bleed.
Why did Texas not stop the bleed? There was a
couple of times where runs were made where you call
the timeout, you refocus your team.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
Why were those timeouts not called?

Speaker 7 (24:48):
You know, Mark, I think that's an interesting point you made,
and I actually was kind of thinking about it myself
in the second half, right, especially with the point.

Speaker 6 (24:55):
I just made that it was a road game.

Speaker 7 (24:57):
You know, you talk about guys like Jordan Pope, Tray Johnson,
others playing in their first NCAA tournament game, right, especially
the circumstances being what they were, could run me Terry
have gone through timeouts a little bit sooner, maybe I
think personally, in my opinion, what really could have signed
me some of those runs was just hitting shots right.

(25:18):
And I mean Texas did again, did a really good
job on the defensive end in the first half, you know,
shutting down their guy, but you can't allow those secondary
scores to break out and be those guys who end
up deciding ball games for you. But to your point, yeah,
I do think, you know, especially the one that comes
to mind. I know you guys were talking about it
earlier in the show, right when Jordan Pope had a

(25:39):
couple of possessions that kind of went awry. We take
a couple of bad shots in a couple of bad plays,
and then you flip it and dagger go down in scores.
Right now, I'm gonna go to a scif against them
where they cut the league before that, I think I
don't be Rotteney call the time. I think it was
the media timeout that actually came and kind of stopped
some of the bleeding there. So yeah, that is something
that could have been been done. But I think more

(26:00):
than anything else, in ability to not go on open child.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
We're talking to Eric Henry of Horace twenty four to seven.
You can follow him at Eric c Henry Underscore with
all the latest e You posted a tweet last night
and I saw it this morning about tough scene in
the Texas locker room, dead silence for the most part,
as a lot of emotions are flowing between the players.

(26:25):
I mean, you were in there, You got a chance
to walk in there and talk to some of the guys.
It was really a somber moment, wasn't it.

Speaker 6 (26:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (26:33):
I mean, listen, hers, you've been in the locker room.
You know what it is when when the season comes
to an end. In a new case, we're talking about
guys in their college careers. You know, Cayden Schedrick, Traman Mark,
Arthur Kaluma was a guy. I mean, if you ever
sent any time around Art, Art's usually pretty upbeat, the
various guy. You know, he had his head in his hands.
You know, Art was talking at a whispers, just talking
about the emotions to not be able to suit up

(26:55):
with this group again and his collegiate career coming to
an end. The other thing that you know, and I
wrote this was my game story last night, is kind
of the uncertainty. Yes, you know, I know, you guys
kind of alluded to the situation of Rodney Terry and
the reports that Texas is set to move on from him.
I asked Rodney Terry about that last night. Of course,
lean on his face as he always does. But the
other side of that guy is we have guys like

(27:17):
Jordan Pope was a junior as another year of eligibility left,
Kendall Weavers a junior with more eligibility left. Devon Pryor
has more eligibility left. They all said they want to
come back to Texas, but you could almost see the
gravity of the situation ling on them because they know
it's now out of their hands, right the coach who
brought them to Texas Seemingly it's not going to be
there right, So their really collegial futures are kind of

(27:41):
hinging in the balance, and especially the transferportal opening on Monday,
it's all going to come fast and fears.

Speaker 3 (27:46):
If you, guys, Eric.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
Let's addressed the elephant in the room. You mentioned it.
We've been alluding to it. Your colleague Chip Brown put
it in his Insider that this was the end of
the road for Rodney terror We we've talked about this
multiple times in our group chat just trying to figure
out what's next. So what is next for the Texas Longhorns.

(28:11):
There's some names that are been thrown out there, but
is this the end of the road for our team?

Speaker 5 (28:17):
Yeah, listen, let's just call a state of state.

Speaker 6 (28:19):
Right, There's no.

Speaker 7 (28:19):
Reason to believe that this is not the end of
the line for Rodney Terry. I wrote this earlier in
the week when all of the speculation and the speculation
has been going on now, not just since the NCAA tournament,
not just since it's lost, It's been going on for
weeks now. There's one man who could have ended that speculation,
and his name is Crystal Content. He could have came
out and said, hey, Rodney Terry's going to be my
coach next year. He chose not to do that, right.

(28:41):
I noted kind of the interesting dichotomy of the post
in locker room being there at the SEC tournament when
Texas won two games and you know, you see the
jubilation from the players. I'm not saying that Crystal Content
was not happy for you know, his program, but it
was an interesting dichotomy to see him kind of outside
the locker room in the hall way, you know, doing
this thing, whereas the player celebrating inside Crystal Conk at
any point in time could have ended that situation. So

(29:03):
there's no reason to believe that those reports and Ship
Brown and others are not true. And really quick on names,
I think he got to look at Sawan Miller again.
You know Sawan Miller with someone who Crystal Content and
Ship reported book. Sean Miller wrote on the short list
the first time around when they ended up beating the
job to Rodney Terry, making him the permanent head coach,
will Wade with a guy whose name was mentioned now

(29:26):
before if he said to take the MP State job.
There are some other names. I think he keep an
eye we'll have someone up on our horns twenty fourth
seven hot boards. I'll give another one to out that
of Sean Miller. Now, uh, got to keep an eye on.
That's kind of interesting in my mind. Pluck Williams, you
know there had some reporting. I had some people kind
of you know, reach out to me into that buzz list.

Speaker 6 (29:46):
Nothing.

Speaker 7 (29:46):
He's on the outs with Trev Alberts, but kind of
similarly to Jim Slasnagele just a difference in philosophy with
Trev Alberts and that could be a situation where there's
an opening there.

Speaker 6 (29:56):
But I think yeah, Sawn.

Speaker 7 (29:57):
Miller's a name to keep an eye on. I spoke
with someone really close, Davier laugh on covering the program.
He said that Sean Miller just bought a home, so
you know, take a real significant offer for him to
uproot his family and move make the move to Austin.

Speaker 8 (30:11):
But we all know.

Speaker 7 (30:12):
There is no shortage of financial opportunities there at Texas.
So if it is a significant offer that if you made,
Texas certainly can make an offer that would be enticed there.

Speaker 3 (30:21):
He is Eric.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
Henry doing his job while he's on the move. Appreciate
you e and we'll talk again soon, especially because that
big baseball weekend we have slatsnagelong at eight. We'll talk
about it soon, brother, anytime.

Speaker 6 (30:35):
Appreciate having me on.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
All right there, he is.

Speaker 1 (30:36):
Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven making his
way back. A lot to unravel right there, and we'll
continue the conversation right here home the morning kickoff on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 3 (30:50):
Good stuff by Eric Henry.

Speaker 1 (30:51):
Of Horace twenty four to seven with all the ladies
he was in Dayton, Ohio checking everything out and watching
basketball season come to an end, and Mark, I want
to get into this conversation and then we'll get back
to basketball. Coming up at the top of the hour,
we will have coach Jim Slosnegel of Texas Baseball as

(31:13):
they get ready to take on LSU. He will talk
about last week going to start the SEC and then
Tuesday night's game, but most importantly he's going to be
talking about this weekend series with LSU. Also, we have
Bill Goldberg, WWE Hall of Famer and wrestling legend, joining

(31:36):
us at a team in our Legends of the Locker
Room segment and we'll have a lot of discussion with him.
But there was a story that came out yesterday.

Speaker 3 (31:49):
About Jackie Robinson.

Speaker 1 (31:52):
The government has decided that they were going to remove
a lot of information regarding military and it was DEI
and so many other things that were involved in this conversation.
They've since made the adjustment and put it all back
in to government because it's part of our history. There's

(32:16):
a lot that Jackie Robinson did post baseball that was
so influential throughout our time. And Mark, your wife used
to work for Major League Baseball.

Speaker 3 (32:29):
She's worked in the front office.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
She knows the inner workings and and things that have
happened throughout baseball history and for that part.

Speaker 3 (32:39):
Of it to be erased.

Speaker 1 (32:41):
And I know a lot of people, I'm not going
to get political in this situation because.

Speaker 3 (32:44):
It's it's it's been.

Speaker 2 (32:48):
That's not political to be to say that that should
not have ever been touched in the first place. Right,
that is, it is not so much of a thing
about you know, the story of history is his story.
Who wins gets to tell the story, and you know,

(33:11):
the American government, they stay winning, like even if you're wrong,
we're still gonna make it a win for us. It's horrible,
but it is what it is. And I think it
never should have been touched. And that's just my personal opinion.
And they don't have nothing to do with whether or

(33:35):
not it was racist or not or anything like that.

Speaker 1 (33:37):
It's just that, you know, you tell the story about
the wars, don't leave nothing out, just tell the full story.
And so Mina Kimes, who is obviously becoming a superstar
in this arena, right and she was fired up about it,
and this is what she had to say. She won

(34:00):
around the horn as she took the time to speak
on that in her victory.

Speaker 9 (34:04):
Lap So, ESPN and others reported today that the Department
of Defense, amidst an ongoing effort to purge government mentions
of diversity equit inclusion, removed the website honoring Jackie Robinson's
military service. It has since been restored, and their spokesperson,
the Pentagon Press Secretary, said this, we do not view
or highlight plea people such as Robinson through the prism

(34:27):
of immutable characteristics such as race, amongst other things. Coach Look,
Jackie Robinson was known for many things, but above all,
first and foremost it was his ongoing courage in the
face of racial discrimination. In fact, in addition to crossing
the color barrier in baseball, he served in a segregated
unit in the Army and in one instant refused to insists,

(34:47):
refused to move to the back of the bus, was
arrested and acquitted.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
That matters.

Speaker 9 (34:52):
That history cannot be a rased, it cannot be undone,
and it must be recognized to fully understand and celebrate
his legacy.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
Thanks Amina, and It's true.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
Not only did he serve in the military, he served
right here on Fort Hood. He also was the athletic
director and basketball coach here at Houston Tillotson, and he's
done a lot of civil work throughout his years, and
you can't take that away from the fact that he

(35:22):
was part of the military. You know, there's so many
the Tuskegee Airmen, there's so many people that were fighting
for this country, and you just can't erase that part
of it.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
You can't.

Speaker 1 (35:41):
And so for them to correct it, it's good, it's
I'm thankful, but it was a frustrating day yesterday when
all that news started breaking. And even Jeff Passon, who
covers Major League Baseball and does a really good job
of investigative reporting, he was losing his mind yesterday.

Speaker 10 (36:03):
Marge.

Speaker 2 (36:03):
We got to get to a place where, uh, success
is everybody's success. There was a point this season or
this year where a friend of mine who's a high
up at at Inkling.

Speaker 1 (36:20):
At Fort Hood, they made the announcement in a public
setting that about this DEI situation and there would be no.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
More of this and no more of that, and they
said that the majority of people applauded rather than going.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
Oh, that's that's that's not fair.

Speaker 6 (36:43):
That's bull right.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
So if you got the you know, if you want
to make the word patriot a bad word, if you
want to, you know, look at things and in a
way that separates us rather than brings us together. I
don't want to be a part of it, right, and
I want to be a part of the bring everybody
together world.

Speaker 1 (37:05):
Well, since we're talking about this and everything that's going on,
major League Baseball has already played two games. The Dodgers
won both of their games in Japan. They're two to
zero on the season. And it kind of goes in
line with Jackie Robinson and Jackie Robinson being a Dodger

(37:26):
and what he was able to do as a Dodger
by breaking the color area. And now you're getting an
opportunity to see different people from different countries be able
to be a major contributor of Major League Baseball.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
So it is.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Always one of those things that are continue going to
be discussed. We're going to continue to have these discussions.
But that I'm glad that they fixed that part of it. Yeah,
I think Jackie Robinson is a huge part of America period.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
No matter what's going on.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
Our number one is in the books coming up next,
we'll have the head coach of the Texas Longhorn baseball team,
coach Jim Slasnagel, coming up next right here on the
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. Welcome back
to the Morning Kickoff. Our number two of the Morning
Kickoff coming up. In the next segment, we'll have WWE

(38:16):
Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg joining us to talk all
things wrestling. But right now we're talking to a Hall
of Famer himself, the head baseball coach of the University
of Texas, coach Jim Slasnagel. As he's getting ready for
a big weekend with the number two ranked LSU Tigers

(38:36):
coming into the dish this weekend. I'm sure he's gonna
want everybody out there. They play at seven o'clock, six
pm on Saturday and two pm on Sunday. And Coach,
you went to Starkville and had a sweep, but you
ended up losing that game on Tuesday. Talk about your
trip to Starkville and the inaugural SEC matchup.

Speaker 5 (38:59):
Yeah, excuse me, good morning, guys. Uh. Yeah, it was
a great trip for us. Had to deal with a
lot of uh we had travel issues.

Speaker 11 (39:07):
Which threw us out of routine.

Speaker 5 (39:09):
We had a tornado watches and warnings that put us
in the basement of the football stadium Assissippi State, and
then ended.

Speaker 11 (39:17):
Up having to play a doubleheader.

Speaker 5 (39:18):
So I had a lot of things to deal with
in our first SEC trip. But it was kids played well,
they competed. All three games were really close, which normally
in the SEC they are. And I've never been a
part of a road SUITEP during my three plus years
in the SEC, so h that was awesome to be

(39:40):
a part of. And Tuesday night.

Speaker 11 (39:42):
Was you know, disappointing and how it ended, but.

Speaker 5 (39:46):
I'm still still proud of our team and how they
competed against a really good uts A team. So tease
it up for a big weekend and certainly going to
be some elite level baseball played. So got to take
it one day at a time.

Speaker 1 (40:02):
So we talk about, you know, the offense all the time,
but I want to get back to the pitching first
before we get into the offense, because you got some
guys that are really swinging the bat well. But I
wanted to get into the pitching because the other night
you brought Cad being out of the bullpen and this
was the cad being that everybody was expected to see.

(40:23):
I know you had him do some starts, and he
did some different things, and you were just trying to
work some things out.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
But him coming out of the bullpen giving.

Speaker 1 (40:29):
You five strong on Tuesday night is something that I
know you're excited about, but most importantly, I'm sure he's
excited about.

Speaker 11 (40:39):
Yeah, Kay did a nice job for us.

Speaker 5 (40:41):
We needed those innings. That's a big part of you know,
when you're trying to put the whole season together.

Speaker 11 (40:48):
A big part of the of having any level of
success on an.

Speaker 5 (40:51):
Sec weekend is who was able to cover up some
innings on Tuesday night to give your other guys a
break so they can catch their breath and maybe pitch
once or twice. At least the relievers will pitch once
or twice on a weekend. So Kate did a nice job.
He didn't start out so great, but he uh kind

(41:13):
of caught his rhythm, got his off speed pitches going,
and you know, it's tough night to pitch with the
wind blowing the way it was.

Speaker 11 (41:20):
Uh, as we saw at the end, little pop.

Speaker 5 (41:23):
Up homer blew out of the ballpark and that was
the difference in the game. But Kate did great. We're
gonna need him to to be uh, to be that
kind of pitcher for us the rest of the year.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
Coach you you in the last interviews said that you
had some teachable moments that you know, yeah, I made mistakes,
but they were correct able. Uh which which which penalties
were you referring to?

Speaker 6 (41:50):
And uh?

Speaker 3 (41:51):
And uh what do you think that they're going to
learn the most.

Speaker 5 (41:56):
Well, the thing they need to learn the most is
we can't give up free and we gave you know,
hit some guys, walk some guys, both to start the
game and then in the middle of the game. And
actually in our last four games, which we've won three
of the last four.

Speaker 11 (42:15):
Games, we've also lost three of the last four what I.

Speaker 5 (42:20):
Would call the free base war in each game, So
that would kind of like be a turnover battle in football.
And usually winning and losing in baseball is directly correlated
to the amount of freebases you get versus the amount
of free bases you give up. Because hitting is hitting

(42:40):
is gonna come and go. And what we had in
Startville's we had even though we gave up free bases,
we had some timely hits and Bourbon's homer and Max
blues homer, and that kind of covered those free bases up,
and we made some pitches to get us out of
some jams. And then this past week or Tuesday, we

(43:05):
give up a lot of free bases, and UTSA got
the hits and they got to you know, uh, they
got the breaks, and we had when we had our
guys on base. You know, Shuster hits the ball off
the pitcher with the bases loaded in the bottom of
the one inning. He hammers the ball at the right fielder.

(43:26):
If that ball falls in, we win, and then it
would have been four out of four or three out
of four or four out of four wins on three
out of four days. We lost the free base war.
You just can't can't be a consistently good baseball team
if you give up free bases. You gotta throw strips,
you can't hit guy, you can't hit guys, you can't
throw the ball over the park, which we played really

(43:46):
good defensive Starkville. We just had the one air on
well the one real error on Tuesday, So those are
gonna come and go. But it's just a free bases
You can't they make you pull your hair out, and
you can't. You can't win that way.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
Pulling any more hair. Yeah, we're talking today.

Speaker 5 (44:05):
I think yeah, I think hard. You pulled it all out.

Speaker 3 (44:10):
Very true, very true.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
Coach we're talking to the Texas had baseball coach Jim
Slosnegel as he's recapping the week that was, and now
we start to preview the week that is, and that's
LSU coming into town. Obviously, LSU one of the top
teams in the country Texas, this is a top ten matchup.
Everybody's gonna have all eyes on Austin, Texas because of

(44:34):
this matchup. What does your scouting report scene about this
LSU baseball team.

Speaker 5 (44:41):
Yeah, Offensively, they're everything that we would want to be
as an offense over the course of time, dynamic speed, power,
left hand hitter, switch hitters, right handed hitters. They have
more walks and strikeouts I believe as a team, and

(45:02):
they have a lot of extra base hits. And so
that's the offense that the best offenses that I've coached
at previous stops. That's what they do. They see pitches,
they make it really tough on the pitcher to throw
the ball over the plate. And when you do throw
it over the plate, they do damage.

Speaker 11 (45:22):
And and that's.

Speaker 5 (45:24):
What they are. And then on the mound they're just
very very good left handed, right handed power arms, big
bullpen arms, freshman, highly draftable guys, so national championship caliber teams.
So you still got to go play the games. And
it's never about the best team. It's only about the
team that plays the best. So we have to go

(45:46):
play good baseball, and we've got to play clean baseball,
and our best players are gonna have to show up.

Speaker 11 (45:52):
That's and if you're going to play.

Speaker 5 (45:54):
A team like this and in these conditions, you better
play well.

Speaker 1 (46:00):
That I was going to talk about the offense, because
your guys are really starting to see the baseball well
and continuing to drive the ball all over the place. Obviously,
in Starkville, some of your best and more powerful guys,
they didn't have their best weekend, but you still found
ways to get victories. Now you're coming back home, Ryland

(46:21):
Galvan is starting to really see the baseball. Borba is
coming up with clutch hits, and of course you talk
about Max Blue and Jalen Flores, but this team as
a whole seems to be in a great spot. At
the play and you put together different lineups. What's the
method between the madness on your lineup choices?

Speaker 5 (46:42):
Yeah, and for the most part, it's matchup based. You know,
if there's a guy that we feel like there's maybe
two or one or two spots in the order dh
left field where you're.

Speaker 11 (46:53):
Trying to play some matchups, and then you also got
to consider.

Speaker 5 (46:57):
Who the best you know, who brings the best defense.
We saw Tommy Farmer, how his defense impacted the game
or the weekend. Uh, well not just this past weekend,
but Tommy's a really good outfield or Gasprino's awesome, Max
is awesome. So outfield defense is vastly underrated. And so
uh yeah, you're just trying to play matchups and get

(47:20):
guys who put them in good positions to be successful
and avoid the matchups that that don't favor you know,
your team.

Speaker 6 (47:27):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (47:28):
And then those core group of players, you know, those
guys Jalen, Max, Rylan Mendoza, Shusterer. I mean, those guys
are gonna be in there almost every day and and
they're gonna have great days. Uh like uh, like Shuster
had an awesome, awesome night Tuesday, awesome night, just was
on the baseball the entire night. You know, those they're

(47:52):
they're gonna have good days and they're gonna have bad
days too, and that's when you need the other parts
of the team to to pick those guys up.

Speaker 2 (47:58):
That was so excited about this weekend, And Uh, unfortunately
I'm not gonna be able to be there. I'm leaving
the country, but I know Hard is going to keep
me connected to what's going on in the game. But
I can't wait to get the back, get back out
there to the field.

Speaker 3 (48:14):
I had a great time. Thank you for the invitation.

Speaker 5 (48:18):
You got it man. You guys are always welcome. We
love having you there.

Speaker 1 (48:21):
Well, we appreciate the coach, And I got one more
question for you. Rotation for the weekend Is it pretty
much gonna be the same, But I know last weekend
was kind of you had to do some adjusting to
the to the lineup because of seven inning double headers.

Speaker 3 (48:34):
But what would be the rotation this weekend?

Speaker 6 (48:38):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (48:38):
Yeah, was spencer'l throw the first game, Luke Harrison'll throw
the second, and then we'll just kind of see where
we are and figure someday out when we get there.

Speaker 1 (48:47):
Okay, and it's Drake. Okay, dray Do Plentyer, is he okay?

Speaker 5 (48:51):
Yeah, yeah, I believe so. Yeah, he was just he
was having trouble getting loose.

Speaker 11 (48:55):
The other night we had to We got him loose.

Speaker 5 (48:58):
Really quick and didn't look great when he started throwing.
So I went to check out him.

Speaker 11 (49:04):
He said, I said, how do you feel? He said,
I feel okay.

Speaker 5 (49:06):
Well, we're not gonna pitch on a Tuesday night feeling
just okay. We have too much of a season left
and Dre Dre's he's very, very important to our team,
so I think he'll be fun.

Speaker 1 (49:17):
Okay, cool, Well, thank you for taking the time, and
best of luck this weekend. I'll see you Friday night.
I will be at the ballpark tomorrow night.

Speaker 5 (49:26):
All right, take care man.

Speaker 1 (49:27):
All Right, there is coach Jim Slasnagel previewing the weekend.
It's gonna be like we thought, it's gonna be a
big weekend. There's gonna be a big weekend on the
forty acres and there's a lot of fun happening coming
up next. Mark's Hall of Fame body Bill Goldberg joins
us next right here on the morning kickoff on Sports

(49:47):
Radio Am thirteen hundred the Zone. Welcome back to the
morning kickoff, as we have a very very special guest
in our Legends of the Locker Room segment. He has
the longest winning streak in WWE history. He is one
of the toughest dudes to ever walk the earth, and

(50:09):
he's also had some matches with our guy, the big
fella in here.

Speaker 3 (50:13):
We're not gonna talk about that.

Speaker 1 (50:16):
He is the legendary Bill Goldberg.

Speaker 3 (50:21):
Good morning Goldburg. How you doing, buddy, I'm great, man.

Speaker 6 (50:24):
It's an honor, gentlemen.

Speaker 1 (50:26):
Thank you for taking the time to get on with us.
Because Mark and I have been talking about this for
quite some time and he said, let's just call him,
let's get him on. So we're excited to have you on.
And I want to get right into it because I
just saw a story about you. Are you coming out
of retirement to have another wrestling match or is this

(50:48):
just a one off? Are you gonna be back in
the business or are you gonna just do this one time?

Speaker 6 (50:55):
Man? You know Mark as Mark.

Speaker 10 (51:00):
Man in Western business. I don't know if you're if
you're ever retired.

Speaker 3 (51:04):
It is the mob.

Speaker 6 (51:04):
I've retired a couple of times.

Speaker 3 (51:06):
It's the mob. Once you're in, you're in, you never
get out.

Speaker 6 (51:10):
It's the that's the best way to explain it. You know.
Uh I wrestled Roman in Saudi my last match, and
it was kind of under different circumstances.

Speaker 10 (51:23):
I had covid uh right coming into it, and I
didn't train, man, so it wasn't the right way for
me to go out, no question. And I was kind
of promised to retirement match. And then you know, the
big Man wasn't employed there anymore, and so that kind
of fell by the wayside.

Speaker 6 (51:40):
And I'm riding my tractor one day out.

Speaker 12 (51:42):
Here in Texas and uh I get a phone call
from from New York and Man, I hung up and
then they called back and it was it was Hunter,
and you know, he said he had heard rumor that
I was requesting a retirement match, and was it still
something that I would consider.

Speaker 10 (52:01):
And you know, that's kind of where we are now. Man. I.
I came to an agreement with him, and in twenty
twenty five, Yeah, we're gonna, we're gonna.

Speaker 6 (52:10):
I think cap it off.

Speaker 10 (52:11):
Man, Like I say, you never say you're you're retired,
so I have to leave that door open.

Speaker 6 (52:18):
Man. But I don't know, man, I don't.

Speaker 10 (52:21):
I don't really like getting up at six o'clock in
the morning and training again and having to eat every
three hours and gain, you know, twenty five pounds back.

Speaker 6 (52:30):
It's fifty eight years old.

Speaker 10 (52:32):
But I mean, you know, like I said, I didn't
go out the way I wanted to, and even at
the accelerated age of myself, I think I still got
a little bit left in me to be able to
go out gracefully.

Speaker 1 (52:46):
Well, Bill, I'm gonna tell you right now, I got
heavy miles and my check engine lighters on, and I'm
saving everything I got for Jacob and Gauge. I'm gonna
give him three years.

Speaker 3 (53:00):
If they ain't. If they're not ready in three.

Speaker 1 (53:03):
Years, then hey, I'm just gonna park it in the garage.
It's gonna be a show car. I'm gonna be a
show car from then on.

Speaker 6 (53:11):
Yeah, I mean, it's dude.

Speaker 10 (53:13):
Life is strange, right, and I couldn't ask for a
better time of my life than being not only a
father or a husband to.

Speaker 6 (53:25):
My wife, but a father to my son.

Speaker 10 (53:29):
And to be able to see Jacob going through it
at the same time, you know, I mean, they've kind
of paralleled each other for a lot of years and
they became friends.

Speaker 6 (53:38):
And I just I love your boy to death. Man,
I don't know where he came from, hey.

Speaker 3 (53:44):
And my wife raised him. I was just.

Speaker 10 (53:50):
But you know, these kids are absolutely the best kids
I've seen, man, not just because they're hours, but you know,
the compliments that they get are athletically, they're they're you know,
ahead of the game. There's no doubt. They don't have
a choice. But they're just two wonderful kids. Yeah, And
I'm more proud of that than anything they could ever

(54:12):
attain athletically.

Speaker 6 (54:13):
You know, to hear the compliments and to hear you know,
what what good humans.

Speaker 10 (54:18):
They are man, that that it really has to make
you proud, man.

Speaker 2 (54:21):
Yeah, it does. It makes me feel great. I feel
the same way.

Speaker 1 (54:26):
The first thing that when when I saw you at
the Arnold Classic recently, you know, Gage came up and
hugged me and like he was dramatically bigger one. I
was just like, whoa man the training table up there
in Colorado to be nice, uh, but but he looked

(54:47):
me in my face and shook my hand like a man,
and I was just like, this is this is awesome?

Speaker 2 (54:54):
Like we we we done pretty well. We never talk
about wrestling.

Speaker 1 (55:00):
I don't think that you and I have ever talked
about pro wrestling. As always family and the kids and
as a wife and that kind of thing. Hards alluded
to the fact that he said, you and Goldberg, y'all
mix it up a few times. And I say, you
know what, man, I take a lot of pride in
the matches that I had with Bill, because when you

(55:25):
came from w CW to WW and amidst the war
in WW acquiring w CW, the longest match you know,
you had, you had seventy five people so that you
had beat but it was it was like under under

(55:46):
five minutes, and we went out there for almost ten
minutes and put on a banger that people gonna remember forever.

Speaker 3 (55:55):
And uh, I take a lot of pride in that match.

Speaker 10 (55:59):
I do too, Man, I do too. You know, it's
for me and for you. It's all about realism. I mean,
you can you can come from where we came from,
and you you you kind of paint yourself in a
bit of a corner because you know, it's harder, it's
much harder to be realistic with a smaller guy in

(56:20):
the ring. But when you have someone that's got the
credentials that you had and have. I mean, this as
logical as you can as you can be, and it
provides a story and a realistic story, and my whole
character and yours also, I believe is based on realism
because you can't forget who you were prior to stepping

(56:42):
into that ring, and.

Speaker 6 (56:46):
It, like I said, it kind of paints you in
a corner a.

Speaker 10 (56:48):
Little bit, but it puts you in the top echelon man,
you know.

Speaker 6 (56:52):
I mean, dude, I was so honored, and.

Speaker 10 (56:54):
I tell the story a million times, but I mean
I went to the Olympics in Atlanta to watch you.
There are a few human beings that I would get
out out of bed for to go watch anywhere, let
alone you know, during the Olympics, during that traffic and
during you know, like the bombings down there, for God's sakes.
But it was an honor and a privilege, man, to

(57:15):
sit out there and watch you do your thing, and
then to be able to be in the ring with
you years later.

Speaker 6 (57:20):
I mean, you know, it's a dream come true. Each
each one of these little segments is a dream for me.

Speaker 10 (57:25):
And you know, I really don't sit down and reflect
on my days back in the wrestling business. I'm still
it's a weird thing with me. It's it's really weird.
But times like that really shine and they really make
me appreciate the opportunities I was given. And man, it's

(57:45):
just an honor and a privilege, not only to have
shared the ring with you, but to call you a
friend and to be able to watch our boys grow
up time together.

Speaker 6 (57:54):
You know, it's just it's it's a blessing, man, it
truly is.

Speaker 1 (57:58):
We're talking to w W Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg,
you know him as Goldberg with that uh spear that
he loves to throw on the people in and change
a lot of lives after they got as Jackhamer and
Jackhammer one, there was no escaping it.

Speaker 3 (58:16):
I got quick.

Speaker 10 (58:16):
Question, what though, Man, it's just how athletics guys like you.
A couple of guys in the world are like you
that you could have helped me pick your big ass up.
People think, oh, Goldberg, did you know what? It's a
dance dude, And there is no way in hell I
could do that to you without your athleticism to be

(58:39):
able to to be that dance partner.

Speaker 2 (58:41):
Bill do you remember, uh, Pat Pattison is saying that
he wanted me to take three spears and I said no.
I said I'm gonna take his finish and he said, no,
you can't do that, and I was like, watch me.

Speaker 3 (58:59):
I was offended. I was so offended that they didn't
think I could do it.

Speaker 1 (59:06):
I'm like, Oh, that's hilarious.

Speaker 6 (59:09):
Don't doubt times.

Speaker 10 (59:12):
You know there's no, but that's when you perform at
your best right when anybody any any sign of doubt anywhere. Man,
that's like a fuel to my fire. And it's not gasoline,
it's freaking jet fuel.

Speaker 1 (59:25):
So I got one question for you before we let
you go talk about your son a little bit and
playing for Dion Sanders. What has that been like for
you as a family.

Speaker 6 (59:36):
Man? Where do I begin with that one? You know,
I don't even know where.

Speaker 10 (59:41):
To start, but you know, to know that that my
son is playing under an ex teammate of mine who
I revere so fondly and I.

Speaker 6 (59:51):
Have so much respect for, it's a blessing.

Speaker 10 (59:54):
Again, man, I never said that things were a blessing
before I came and became a father. But you know,
to be able to be in that situation and to
be able to be on a team that has you know,
probably now it's probably got two hundred years of NFL
experience on their coaching.

Speaker 6 (01:00:11):
Squad, coaching staff. It's it's truly unbelievable.

Speaker 10 (01:00:16):
And you know, guys like staff or huge wrestling fans
back in the day, Dion. You know, I used to
wrestle in the locker room for Dion when people would
call him out, that step in.

Speaker 6 (01:00:25):
There, and you know, we do our thing, and.

Speaker 10 (01:00:28):
I mean we we were good friends back then, and
it shows you what a human being he is because
I had nothing to offer Deon except for friendship and
maybe you know, entrance into a couple of clubs here
and there, but that's a different story.

Speaker 3 (01:00:44):
But you know, he he I was.

Speaker 10 (01:00:47):
On the developmental squad man and and he was making
he was Dion Sanders. He was flying around playing baseball
and football on the same day.

Speaker 6 (01:00:55):
So, I mean the friendship that we that we started
and that we've continued.

Speaker 10 (01:01:02):
At the Falcons just as a testament to you know,
you treat people how you want to be treated. And uh,
Jay Lennell told me one day, man, you you you
you respect the guy and you base your opinion on
him based upon how he treats his weight staff. Well, man,
I was the wait staff in the Falcons, right, I
was the wait staff.

Speaker 6 (01:01:22):
And you know he he's such a wonderful dude. And
the last game I played in.

Speaker 10 (01:01:28):
The NFL, I got a you know, a personal foul
against me for yeah something, uh. Dion got smashed out
of bounds and I ran from sideline to sideline to
just freaking level the dude.

Speaker 6 (01:01:40):
And I guess that was kind of the start of
my wrestling career.

Speaker 10 (01:01:44):
But to be able to have gauge play under Dion,
and you know in Colorado, it's it's it's truly unbelievable.

Speaker 5 (01:01:52):
Man.

Speaker 6 (01:01:53):
I mean, Gage was he wanted.

Speaker 10 (01:01:54):
To be a baseball player up until right his senior year,
you know, he he it was a fifty to fifty
and he looks at me one day and I'll never
forget it. I'm sitting in the gym or walking up
the stairs and he turns around.

Speaker 6 (01:02:06):
He goes, Dad, I want to hit people. And I'm like, oh,
this is awesome football.

Speaker 8 (01:02:11):
Football, it is, so you know, he he kind of
he really did put himself behind the eight ball and
he started late in football I didn't let him lift.

Speaker 6 (01:02:21):
Weights till he was in ninth grade.

Speaker 10 (01:02:23):
You know, he hated me for it, but now he
loves me for it because he's passed most of those
people that were much stronger than him as a kid.

Speaker 6 (01:02:31):
I mean, I told you.

Speaker 10 (01:02:33):
Mark, he hit two twenty five for twenty four reps
the other day, and you know, that's that's better than
I did in college.

Speaker 6 (01:02:39):
And that was a senior I think.

Speaker 10 (01:02:41):
But I mean, I'm not I'm not going to talk
numbers with you in the weight room, but I mean,
for for a Goldberger, that's pretty damn good. And then
he then he does a standing back slip at two
thirty two thirty two.

Speaker 9 (01:02:55):
Man.

Speaker 6 (01:02:55):
So I'm so proud of him and so proud.

Speaker 10 (01:02:59):
That he's under a coaching staff that our great fathers
not only good coaches, And that's something in this day
and age, that's yeah, it's it's it's unbelievable.

Speaker 6 (01:03:12):
And Dionna holds him to a standard.

Speaker 10 (01:03:13):
Everybody sees, you know, the outside and all the flash
and the gold chains and the everybody dancing, and.

Speaker 6 (01:03:20):
Man, he they hold it down. Man. People don't see
behind the scenes.

Speaker 10 (01:03:24):
They just see, you know, what's on social media, but
they're you know, gauge. I'll never forget they're playing in
the Alamo Bowl.

Speaker 6 (01:03:33):
Uh.

Speaker 10 (01:03:33):
Coach Hart is his linebacker coach and coach Coach Hart
was at Jackson.

Speaker 6 (01:03:39):
State with with the Young and I was on TV right.
It was a local television station showing gauge.

Speaker 10 (01:03:48):
From you know, Bernie, Texas, and you know it's a
local it's a local kid playing in in in the
Alamodome and man Gage goes.

Speaker 6 (01:03:56):
Up to the bag and he hits it and he
freaking it was wrong. His technique was wrong, and Coach.

Speaker 10 (01:04:00):
Heart jumped his ass and man, he old schooled him.
I mean he was yelling at him, grabbed his grabbed
his jersey, pulled him in, you know, and was just
giving him the what too. And you know what, looking
back on it, man, uh, those are the guys that cared.
Those are the guys that I remembered that that that
cared enough to really snap you out of whatever you

(01:04:21):
were thinking and put you on the right path. And
people were very uh, they were waiting for my reaction
when Coach Hart did that the gauge right in front
of me, and I started laughing, and I'm like, hell,
go for him, man, let's go right.

Speaker 6 (01:04:36):
And I came up to him afterwards and I thanked him.
And I thanked him not because well, I thanked him
because he would.

Speaker 10 (01:04:41):
He treated him like I would have been treated him.
But if that would have been on TV, then it
was me. I'd be put in jail, you know, for abuse.
But these kids, and Mark, I'm telling you right now,
and you know it, there's so much entitlement going around,
and there's so much laziness going around, and there's so
much you know, it's it's the most unbelievable thing I've

(01:05:02):
ever seen. And this portal thing and the nil thing
has contributed negatively contributed to it. But it's just the
fact that somebody takes the time to old school teach
my son.

Speaker 6 (01:05:14):
It's a blessing. Man.

Speaker 10 (01:05:15):
It's it's just it's so cool to be a part
of that program.

Speaker 6 (01:05:20):
Sure they're not, you know, on top of the world
right now. I mean, we lost you know, three of
the you.

Speaker 10 (01:05:26):
Know, most unbelievable college players that you can have on
a team, but we're gonna replace them with some unbelievable people.

Speaker 6 (01:05:33):
And uh, it's just a it's a big family, you know,
It's it's really cool.

Speaker 10 (01:05:39):
It's it's a it's an awesome situation, except for when
it's freezing and boulder and I gotta fly there for
a football game.

Speaker 2 (01:05:46):
Well, Bill, thank you man so much for coming on
with us. We want to invite you again during the
football season next year when Texas plays Georgia. Uh we
we we never got to talk about it, as so
much should talk about. Hopefully this won't be the last
time we have you on the locker room. Appreciate you,
my man.

Speaker 6 (01:06:06):
You got it, my pleasure.

Speaker 3 (01:06:07):
You'll be well.

Speaker 6 (01:06:08):
Man, I have a great day.

Speaker 1 (01:06:10):
There is Bill Goldberg. We went a little along with
Bill Goldberg. But you know what time it is? The
one and only WWE Hall of Famer and World's Strongest Man,
d Mark Henry brings you the world's strongest take.

Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
Take it away, big fellow. What's up? You know what
time it is? What time is?

Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
It's time for the world's strongest take with the world's
strongest man, my guest. Back then, they didn't know me.
Now that I know Flavor Flay, they all o me, guys.
Last night, I wish that we could have had somebody
get the memo to the Spurs stop winning.

Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
What part of taking.

Speaker 6 (01:06:59):
Do you know this?

Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
Last night, Sandro.

Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
Mamood Coaginsvilli went for thirty four points in only nameteen
minutes and hard I was telling you about that guy
when we went to watch the Spurs play here in Austin,
that he put twenty two on the dream on the
Olympic team. He was a good player, and somebody told

(01:07:27):
me play for the Spurs and I was like, man,
I hope I get to see him play.

Speaker 3 (01:07:30):
He didn't play one minute in that game that we
were at.

Speaker 1 (01:07:35):
So but the story is, Flavor Flave met him traveling,
befriended him and said, hey, I'm coming to a game.
So Flavor Flav went down to the game last night
and man.

Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
Ma Mood just went off like it only take one
person to believe in you to get really good stuff
out of you. My take is next year, with the
addition of somebody that can score like he can score,
the Spurs.

Speaker 1 (01:08:13):
Are gonna be in a good place. They don't need much.
They don't need much. What say you, Well, they're gonna
need to do something because it is what it is,
and they're gonna try to figure out you talked about
it before. They don't know how to tank properly. They
keep winning. They finding ways with your killing me. But hey,
it is what it is. We're gonna see what's gonna happen.

(01:08:34):
And the biggest story is going to be, not necessarily
who they have on the court, is who's gonna be
on the bench, and what's next for Greg Popovich. When
we come back, we'll close out the show and send
you to Dan Patrick.

Speaker 3 (01:08:46):
Texas is in the market for a new coach and
March Madden.

Speaker 1 (01:08:49):
It starts today right here on the morning kickoff on
Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone. I can't tell
you how much fun I've had on this show today
with Eric Henry joining us from Horns twenty four to seven,
from coach Slosnagel breaking it down for us as always,

(01:09:10):
and of course the legendary Bill Goldberg joining us in
our Legends of the Locker Rooms segment, which was outstanding,
and the love fest that he and Mark Henry have
for each other is something like that, because it actually
was a love fest.

Speaker 3 (01:09:26):
And you can tell.

Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
People about our Thursday meetings.

Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
No, I don't tell people about it. We get really close.

Speaker 2 (01:09:33):
No, we sit close to each other and we do
it and we do the coach and review.

Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
It's called it's called forced relationship, which every time I
ask for help as often as I possibly can, because
you make me nervous.

Speaker 3 (01:09:50):
I won't. I won't put my arm around you this week.
Oh thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
Somebody that's gonna need his arm somebody putting their arm
around him is the head coach of Texas Longhorse. Because
more reports are coming out this morning, it is being
made official that Rodney Terry will no longer be the
head coach of the Texas Longhorns. There is a lot
of there was a lot of speculation going into this

(01:10:17):
second half of the season in what was going to happen,
and it seems to be that Chris deal COUNTI and
some sources, I guess you would say, have kind of
made it known that they are going to make a
move pretty soon and it should be official this afternoon.
There's a lot of coaching names that were out there,

(01:10:39):
and let's just say this, Rodney Terry was put in
a tough situation to become the head coach of the
Texas Longhorns. I think what he was able to do
during his time as the head coach, he's been at this.

Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
University for thirteen years.

Speaker 1 (01:10:54):
He knows everything about this university and he knew what
it was calling for.

Speaker 3 (01:11:00):
And you know, although it was.

Speaker 1 (01:11:02):
A very disappointing season by a lot of standards, I
respect him as a man more than anything. He's a
god fearing man. He's done some great things at this university.
And it's a cold world when when we are in
the world of athletics, and this is what the end

(01:11:22):
result is. Coaches get hired to get fired. I mean,
that's the reality of it all. And I don't know
if there was enough that he could have done. I
don't know what the number was to get deep into
the college playoffs. I mean the NCAA tournament which starts today.
Speaking of we need to tell who our final for us,

(01:11:43):
so go ahead real quick. But anyway, good to Mark,
to Rodney Terry. I wish him nothing but the best.
He's a class act. He's a great man, and I
wish things would have been different.

Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
I wish all for coach and in reshipationship is never
gonna change, never, never, he always gonna be coach to me.

Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
So the n c A Division One is a basketball
championship starts today March madness. This is what we've been
waiting for. Productivity at work is going to be terrible, terrible.
I'll say a lot of football gonna be working remote
and coach Boss, I'm gonna be off today, but I'll
be on my laptop. Everybody had starting on Monday. They

(01:12:25):
had to starting on Monday. But Mark, give us your
final four right now.

Speaker 3 (01:12:30):
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
Out of the South, I have Auburn. Out of the East,
I have Duke. Out of the West, I have Florida.
And out of the Midwest, I have Houston. That's your
final four. That's my final four. All right, my.

Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
Final four Duke, Houston, Florida and Auburn.

Speaker 3 (01:12:52):
That is my final four. That sounds just like mine.
Well I didn't. I didn't cheat off your who's your
show champion?

Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
No?

Speaker 3 (01:13:00):
No, who's your uh?

Speaker 1 (01:13:02):
The the two last it's the same, dude.

Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
And you have Duke beating Florida. No, you're have Florida
beating Duke. Yeah, look at you. He looked my paper,
didn't I didn't.

Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
I try not to. I really try not. I try
not to.

Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
But here's the thing. Our bracket at the very beginning,
it's not the same. We are not the same. Therefore
the champion. So you know, you.

Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
Think Michigan is going to beat Texa A and M me. Hey, hey,
do you have my paperwork? No, I'm asking you, I'm
looking at mine.

Speaker 3 (01:13:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:13:46):
I do think Michigan is going to beat Texas A
and M I do You're wrong?

Speaker 6 (01:13:51):
I do.

Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
I think Yale is going to be Texas A and
m get a.

Speaker 3 (01:13:57):
Damn yeah, call me, but your boy, you'll get a chance.
You'll get a chance.

Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
You get a chance my bracket, or you're gonna be
laughing at my bracket.

Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
I'm gonna tell you.

Speaker 2 (01:14:08):
The two games that I'm looking forward to the most
is Florida versus Memphis because I think that Memphis can
challenge Florida and they're the only one that could bust
my bracket on that side. And the other one is
to see b YU and Alabama. Okay, because b Yu

(01:14:29):
man I Duke and Houston are the only two teams
in this bracket that I think could be b YU
And if.

Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
B Yu is really hot, man, we might see.

Speaker 3 (01:14:42):
Now you're hot, they all on you.
