to be I got to watch something pretty epic.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
I made a hurry from.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
The event over at Cover three. Great folks over at
Cover three. We had a great ladies clinic last night.
It was outstanding. Then I went to my son's basketball game.
They get the victory, and then I walk in the
house and all the TV was screaming at me was
hook em, hook em. And I was like, let's see

(02:47):
what happens here. The women's volleyball team had one of
the best matches, the best matches of the night of
the season, as they played another ranked on it and
they beat them for the fourth time.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
And this is what it sounded like.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Free ball back to Louisville, Cobaota, krusty on the slide,
hit a wall. This Texas team is gusy. A fourth

(03:35):
ring to win for Texas this season, Holly. They were
down eleven to six in.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
The fifth A love back, Yes, come back when and
this is a verse to fifteen? Yeah, this is a
veteran team in Louisville too.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yes. Uh, they beat.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Texas last year and I was just like, wow, man,
if they'd have changed it and changed that, you know,
you always got to analyze it. But this year they
have younger players that are going against veteran What are
they going to be like at the end of the.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Season, can't I can't tell you how excited I am
for those young players. We always talk about Marcus Spears'
daughter and what she's been able to do.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
But let's give Jared Elliott his props.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Danny Davis posted this last night and it said Texas
is five and zero with wins over number twelve ranked Creighton,
number eight ranked Wisconsin, number six ranked Stanford, and now
number four ranked Louisville.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
It's the first time since.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
He took over in two thousand and one that Texas
have beaten four ranked teams in his first five matches,
and they have continued to do it two thousand and nine,
they did it twenty twenty two, and now twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Well that's I mean, the reflection of the coach on
the team is always something that we talk about with
coach Sark. Yeah, we should talk about with all sports.
I mean, coach Vicker is like one of my favorites.
Is you know, I love the Texas the coloquialisms, if
you will, I love the sayings. But like this volleyball

(05:12):
team is a model for consistency, It's like you said,
you went all the way back to two thousand and
twenty one, and here we are in twenty five, two
thousand and one when he took two thousand and one
when he took over. But look at that tenure and
all of the accomplishments, and it seems like every year

(05:35):
that might be a down year, But a down year
for Texas volleyball is like losing.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
In the championship game exactly, exactly.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
Crazy.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, they recruit well, and that's the thing that I
continue to really be excited about.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
That team is going to be good.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Cary Spears, Marcus Spears' daughter, has become a superstar.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
I didn't realize. So I met her twice.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
I met her once at a basketball tournament because my
son was playing against Marcus Spears's son, who's the number
one player in the class of twenty twenty seven for basketball.
And then I met her the other day when they
made the announcement of human Being the super Beats being
a sponsor on the field for the University of Texas

(06:25):
and helping those out, and she was giving out some
of those gift bags, and so I got a chance
to see her there and her energy she already understands
who she is. I mean, she grew up in a
household of professional athletes, and she understands what it's all about.
And she carries herself as that. She was smiling, she
was meeting everybody, looking them in the eyes. They've got

(06:47):
a superstar right here during this time, and she's going
to be totally totally amazing as the years go on.
As this team is, I mean, it's exciting when you
understand what we've talked about this before, Mark, when you
start to have success and everyone around you, all the
coaches feed.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Off of it.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
From the University of Texas, they don't want to be
the weak link to stop them from getting the director
to liar.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Field come now, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
So they're pushing their team as well. So it is
fun for these young ladies to continue to push the
envelope and really really show out.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
I'm looking forward to seeing the advancement of these young ladies.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Yeah, because they are young. But I'm gonna tell you
one thing.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Hard young is really a state of mind when it
comes to sports. When you got great leadership nose, great
leaders will take a young team and make them something special.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
This is the fourth most watched regular season match on
ESPN three hundred and nineteen thousand viewers, and it peaked
at six hundred and sixteen thousand viewers. That's because everybody
was coming home from Events rights.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
At that time.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
That's what we got the TV's to really spark up. Yeah,
that's good right there. That's good watching, no doubt, no doubt.
So congratulations to those ladies and another epic matchup. As
you heard, they were down eleven to six and came
all the way back to the first to fifteen, so
that is outstanding work. As I said earlier, we got
Eric Henry of Horns two four seven joining us at

(08:21):
seven thirty four, and we have the legendary Hall of
Famer head coach, former head coach of the University of Texas.
We have Mac Brown joining us at eight seventeen.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
You do not want to miss it.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Appointment radio, ladies and gentlemen, also appointment radio. We got
a big matchup coming up this weekend, and I don't
want to hear about the point spread and what everybody thinks.
Texas has to take advantage of every opportunity that they
have when they get on the field to get better,
and they have an opportunity to go up against one
of the up and coming coaches named Scotty Walden, who's

(08:57):
the head coach of UTEP one of the top quarterbacks
in the land in Malachi Nelson. So there's gonna be
some opportunities there. And here's the scouting report from coach
Scottie Walden on the Texas Longhorns and what he thinks.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Okay, how good they are. I'll talk quarterback.

Speaker 6 (09:15):
Everybody talks about you know, I think it's just fucking
of like you know, as coaches, that's it's almost comical,
like how some people portray you know, they're not as
good or he's he's not as good as we thought,
or I mean, these guys are a really good football team.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Like like I'll see.

Speaker 7 (09:32):
The media about how they need Archer to play better.

Speaker 6 (09:35):
Like brother, all he did was throw four touchdowns last
Saturday in an SBS.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
College football game. Uh.

Speaker 6 (09:41):
And and he then there beat Ohio State. Is first start.
You know, he's argued with the best team in the country. Uh,
he's poisoned the pocket. Uh he's an ALUCIVI. I I
think people need to understand he's a very and some
people talk about it, but he's an underrated runner man.
He's athletic, and he's big, he's physical. Uh, he can
make all the throws. If if he's on the left

(10:03):
hash and you know, to the field, he's got to
give me throw, he can make and catch that ball
and beat that throw, uh seamlessly. You know, he's got
a lead, weapons, a round and a living. Stowe kid
went off against San Luanse State. I mean, he's super explosive.
Their running tacks are big, physical, they played out hill,
but their offensive blind deserves a ton of praise. They're massive, uh,

(10:23):
massive human bes that move really well defensively. The Simmons
kid is one of the best pass rushers in the country.
And I really been sixteen. The safety, I believe it's Taff.
I don't want to put his name, but I believe
it's uh Taff. Make sure I got it right, Uh,
Michael Taff. He's on the quarterback in the defense. Man
that guy is. That guy is just everywhere he gets
them lined up. He's literally the quarterback to the defense

(10:45):
and they play extremely physical. So uh, you know, certainly
have a ton of respect for Cross Sartiesian and what
he's doing. There Texas, uh, and they got a great
football team.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
They do have a great football team, but they have
to come out and show it weekend and week out
because the one thing that coach Stark keeps talking about
is getting better and better each week, watching the growth.
He still doesn't know what his team is yet, and
that's what I'm waiting for. I'm waiting for him or
somebody to ask him. I may even ask him on Monday.
Where do you see your team right now? That was

(11:16):
a wrestling promo. That was a wrestling promo because we're
taught in wrestling when you talk about your opponent, you
never talk bad about him and less they're in your face, right,
And that's.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
What he did.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
He build Texas up, but in his mind he's like,
I'm gonna knock him down.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Yeah, well there are forty one and a half point
dog And I said, I wasn't gonna talk about it,
but they are forty one and a half point dollars.

Speaker 6 (11:41):
Bill.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
No, you keep trying to build him up to the
build up, but we will respect every opponent.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
Yeah, we'll contract them until we can't.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Coming up next, we're gonna hear from coach Sartin as
he breaks down this week and he gets to talk
a little bit about where his team is and what
he expects as well. Right here on the Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to a prediction Thursday edition of the Morning Kickoff right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. In

(12:13):
the next segment seven thirty four, we will have Eric
Henry of Horns two four seven at eight seventeen in
our Legends of the Locker Room segment, we will have
Hall of Famer and National Championship head coach Mac Brown
joining us. We will also do our predictions for the weekend.
We got the world's strongest take. This is the day

(12:34):
that you need to be tuned in, and that should
be every.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
Day this week.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Coach Sarks in Every week on Wednesday, every coach in
the SEC has a telephone teleconference with all of the media,
so he's been asked a bunch of questions and as usual,
Coach Sark rolls in and he gives his quote unquote
state of the Union and opening statement.

Speaker 8 (12:57):
Well, it's a week three for us US obviously, and
you know second game back to that game here at
dk R, and it was an awesome environment, you know.
Having having last week's ball game at home, I thought
our fans were tremendous. Looking forward to seeing them again
here Saturday afternoon against UTEP. Looking for continuing growth in

(13:19):
our football team, uh, trying to get better in all
three phases, continuing to bring some young players along that
got some good experience last week. Need to continue to
try to do that this week, and try to play
a more efficient game than we did last week.

Speaker 7 (13:34):
You know, obviously we had a high number of penalties.

Speaker 8 (13:37):
Working on playing a cleaner game and getting those numbers
down and just being more efficient in all three phases.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
You know, I appreciate the fact that he said that
about being more efficient, brought up the penalties. Last night
at the women's clinic I was doing, I was moderating
Derek Johnson and Norm Watkins. And one of the questions
that was asked by by the way great great work
by the young ladies that were there and asking all
the great questions. It was a lot of good stuff

(14:04):
that was being asked, and it was more about the
off the field stuff than it More than about the
off field I mean on field. Yeah, And one of
the things that was brought up was about the team culture,
and it was Norm Watkins answer this and it was perfect.
And then Derek followed it up and he said, you know,
when you have good culture, everything kind of takes care

(14:28):
of itself, right, Like, when things are bad, we can
correct them, we can be together. When things are great,
we can humble each other and keep everybody on the
even kill when you have those types of leaders in
that locker room. And you heard the coach from UTIP
talk about Michael Taff and what he brings to the table.
As far as the quarterback of that defense. You look

(14:50):
at that offensive line and you have Trevor Gooseby, who
was thrown into the fire last year and now he's
the leader on that offensive line. Cole Hudson, a guy
that his body is time, is now considered one of
those leaders on that old line as well, along with
DJ Campbell. So when you have good culture, it means

(15:11):
more to a lot of these off the field things
that can happen. And coach coach Sark spoke about the
on and off the field culture, So that's why I
brought it up, So I run it.

Speaker 8 (15:22):
Yeah, No, I think I think the developing the locker room,
and in our case, our culture I think is as
important as developing them as as players on the field.
I think that I've said for a long time now
that that culture beats talent. You know, if you if
you play as a team and you're really well connected,

(15:43):
and you're you're trustworthy, and you're accountable, and you do
your job really well, you know that that can that
can supersede just a talented team. Now, I've always also
said that a talented team that has a really good culture,
that has a great strong locker room, I think that's
really dangerous and really powerful.

Speaker 7 (16:01):
That's that's when you have something.

Speaker 8 (16:03):
And so we are constantly working on both, whether it's
in the off season or in season. And I think
we're fortunate we've got a pretty good culture.

Speaker 7 (16:13):
Established here now in year five.

Speaker 8 (16:16):
I'm not saying we're perfect, but I do think we
have a pretty good one established. We've got some great
team leaders that that set the standard and set the
set the tone for what our culture is. Uh and
then it's a constant race to try to get your
younger players slash newer players on your roster roster on
board with what that standard, what that culture is.

Speaker 7 (16:38):
On a on a daily and consistent basis.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Yeah, And and let's thanks lucky stars that we haven't
had a lot of off the field, right, you know,
like we we've had a couple and stuff happens. They're kids,
but the things that they're doing are correctable by discipline
and they're they're they're corrected by leadership. And I feel like,

(17:03):
you know, our most recent you know, bumping the road,
who better than Steve Starkeshan have as a mentor to
be able to walk you through that situation and say, listen,
you're gonna have to take your lumps.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
I took mine, you're gonna have to take yours.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
How are you going to make your brothers feel more
comfortable with you and being responsible for yourself?

Speaker 3 (17:29):
Like so, like it's a great system to be in. Yep.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
And he was also asked about what is the next
step that he would like to see for his team
moving forward.

Speaker 8 (17:39):
Well, I just think it's it's fine to that level
of consistency on the field. You know, naturally we're playing
some new people, whether it's on the offensive side of
the ball, on special teams. You know, we're fortunate on
defense to not have as many young players getting forced
into action. I know we have some some some newer

(18:00):
faces on the defensive front, some of those being transfers,
but a little more experience on the defensive side of
the ball. But I think, you know, on special teams
on offense, we've got some newer faces and we've had
some growing pains, and so we're finding trying to find
us a level of consistency of the style of play
in which we want to play the game and then

(18:21):
doing it on a consistent basis, down in and down out.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
Yeah, And that to me is where the discipline comes
back in the mindset starts to set in to where
I have to hold my water, so to speak, in
this situation on the offensive and defensive line. You have
to present yourself as somebody that can make the adjustments.
I can be mentally tough and mentally strong enough to

(18:45):
be able to be disciplined in those particular moments. And
I think this team is going to be a lot better.
I think the penalties, if anything, I see them being
cut in half. Twelve is way too many. Six you
can deal with. Some of them are your not even
your doing. You know, the face mask situation. Guy might

(19:09):
duck right before he gets there. So sometimes you're grabbing it,
you just can't pull it off the hinges, so to speak,
in there. But there's gonna be some PI down the field,
so there's some things that can happen, but I expect
to see this team cut those in half this week
and moving forward.

Speaker 9 (19:26):
I want to add something because you guys were talking
about the culture, and what I find interest is you
guys brought up the culture of on the field, off
the field and you know, being responsible of handling things
after they happen.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
But it also prevents things from happening. Absolutely. You can.

Speaker 9 (19:43):
You can catch a guy and they're about to do something,
or a player, one of the players might be drunk
and another player like, look, I'm taking you home.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
So you can be prevented if.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
In that same way, well you gotta have you got
to have.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
People around you.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
As our boy Sean Adams are r he used to
always say, I got you got to have people around
you to tell you when your slip is showing and
when you can do that and you have that type
of faith in each other, that's what it's all about.
So yes, I agree with you about the preventative part
of it, but you also have to deal with it
the day to day, so you know each other's personalities,

(20:19):
you know how. That's why they yesterday was Culture Wednesdays
for the University of Texas.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
They've talked about it.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
This is where they start to build their culture and
continue to learn about each other so they can make
sure that they understand what makes everybody tick.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
One of the biggest.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
Things that has been addressed coming up is the portal
window changing when you can and cannot move around, and
coach Sark spoke on that as well.

Speaker 8 (20:45):
Yeah, you know, I think I'm in favor of it,
you know, having having gone through the varying portal windows
now for the past few years, and having been in
the playoffs the last two years, and dealing with the
gender me the December portal a year ago in the
previous two years, and then having dealt with you know,

(21:08):
being in the semi finals last year and playing all
the way into January and dealing with the portal. You know,
as I was thinking about it, you know, I think
for the betterment of our game, you know, when you
can eliminate that spring portal window there in April and
into May and you focus on just that one window
in January. I think that's the best window for the

(21:29):
players because ultimately, if they can get into the portal
and get to their new school in January, that gives
them an opportunity to get acclimated at their new school,
that that school's culture, that school systems, and schemes. I
think that's what's best for the programs in general, because
then we can figure out our roster and start developing

(21:52):
our team of what that'll look like through spring ball
and in the summer, and at the end of the day,
you know, if you're one of the fourteen that's dealing
with the portal, as you're as you're in the final four,
you know, I guess that's a pretty good problem to have.
That means you probably had a pretty good team and
you're having a good season.

Speaker 7 (22:10):
And you'll figure it out.

Speaker 8 (22:12):
We've all got big enough stafs now, everybody's got their
you know, personnel departments and general managers and player personnel
directors and all the things. You know, we've got plenty
of manpower that that we can manage it. So I
just think it's probably in the best interest of everybody,
the schools, the teams, and and ultimately the student athletes
of having this window b where it.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Is, that's the perfect thing. So when we come back,
we're going to talk to Eric Henry about the new
transfer portal rules. We're going to talk about some of
the injuries that were let out yesterday and the expectations
moving forward for this Texas football team. Coming up next,
Eric Henry of Horns two four seven joins us right

(22:54):
here on a prediction Thursday of the Morning Kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to
the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Coming up in the next segment, Dallas
Cowboys brought in a player, but I'm kind of confused
about why they brought him in.

Speaker 3 (23:14):
We'll talk about it, but right.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Now we're gonna go to our guy, Eric Henry of
Horns two four seven. You can follow him at Eric
c Henry Underscore on social media, and he we gotta
get right into it because there was a report came
out yesterday that there are some injuries that the Texas
Longhorn fan base was not knowing, and now we need

(23:39):
to find out who is injured and who is a
game time decision.

Speaker 10 (23:46):
Warterfel appreciate you having me on. Yeah, you know, as
soon as you say injuries that we're known, you know
they're gonna go to one name. But that's not the
guy we're talking about. It's not number zero DeAndre more Junior.

Speaker 5 (23:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (23:59):
If you may remember that he went, he left last Saturday,
the game he get San Jose State after a bit
of a hit. Our Chip Brown over horns twenty four
to seven reporter that he's dealing with a concussion that
he was diagnosed with coming off of that game.

Speaker 3 (24:13):
It's day to day right now.

Speaker 10 (24:15):
It looks as if he will be available in some capacity,
but still look for that to be a game time decision.
Alex January same thing, the injury not being concussion injury
was not disclosed, but that it's going to be a
game time decision with him. Contravan Weisner looking for an
update today when we speak with Steve Sarkisian. Of course,
on Monday they said that he is he Steve Sarkigan

(24:35):
said that he Contravan Weisner would be doubtful for Saturday's game.
Just my quick take, especially against an opponent like UTEP,
and again it's no respect to the miners, but whether
it's them or or Sam Houston probably not going to
rush to get these guys back out there from not
one hundred percent, especially since you have the buy before
you get into sec play.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Yeah, that's an interesting take that DeAndre Moore is intriguing
to because, as you said, there was no sign of
it or no mention of it on Monday, just said
it was an injury, and now we're saying that it
might have been a possible concussion, and now he's day
to day, So that's interesting. The other question that I
had for you was the transfer portal, So people have

(25:16):
been talking about that. What is the new rule for
the transfer portal and does that affect signing day as well?

Speaker 10 (25:25):
Yeah, for those who don't know, it's basically just tightening
the window, right, not having multiple windows with you know,
extended periods over twenty one days. Looking to tighten this
thing up so that you got one ten day window
wouldn't shock me, Harge, because as best I understand it's
not finalized yet, it wouldn't shocking This thing is more
like fourteen days, twelve days, just because you know, you

(25:46):
are a little more wiggle room.

Speaker 7 (25:48):
But I think it's.

Speaker 10 (25:49):
Something, you know, the example that Steve Sarkejian likes to
use is the team's twenty twenty three running the College
Ball Playoff, where Malik Murphy basically.

Speaker 3 (25:59):
Had to make decision.

Speaker 10 (26:00):
Of course, former Longhorn's backup had to make the decision, Hey,
do I stick with the team through the CFP run
or do I leave because of the portal window? And
I got to get in there now because you've got
to find your next home, right, I would ask Malik
in hindsight, considering he's already found another home, right, if
that was worth it, be't another conversation for another day.
In terms of signing day, yeah, I mean each time

(26:23):
Mark and Hard that they adjust the the you know,
transfer window, it inherently has an effect on signing day
because you know, some teams and I don't think Texas
really falls into this category, but I'll just speak on
a broad scale. Have to make a decision, Hey, are
we going to prioritize you know, four or five six
guys out of the portal versus maybe we can bring

(26:46):
in two, three, four high school guys and then if
the window is different, then maybe come back to that
at a different time. Right, So that's kind of the
trickle down effect.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
Yeah, that's so that's kind of crazy to me when
you sit back and you think about how this new
portal situation is going to affect a bunch of guys.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
My question to you is there was a couple of
coaches that didn't like it, and one of which was
coach Day at at Ohio State, Like, what is the
drawback to that? Why would you not like a one
time portal.

Speaker 10 (27:24):
It's funny, Mark, I didn't realize if Ryan Day had
an objection to it. I'm going to put your answer
to you this way. If you're at Ohio State, if
you're a power school in that regard, I don't know
what the drawbacks would be, right, because you're gonna be
able to get your share of guys, whether it's through
high school or the portal. I think this has an
effect on your lower tier power schools. You know, I

(27:45):
always use certain schools and examples, so I apologize for
being up on you again, But like your vandits your
Mississippi States, your you know, Washington State schools of that nature,
or your group of fives, right, because let's use this example,
Mark and Harje and I think using the UTEP Texas
game this weekend is a good kind of metaphor for this.

(28:05):
In the twenty twenty three recruiting class, right, just quarterbacks,
twenty four to seven Top seven recruiting Top seven quarterbacks,
only one is still with their current.

Speaker 3 (28:15):
Program, arch Manning arch Man.

Speaker 10 (28:16):
Right, you got Malachi Nelson coming in, who's on his
third program. The other seven guys all with different programs.
The reason I use that as an example is to
say those lower tier schools, they're not recruiting high school
quarterbacks anymore.

Speaker 7 (28:28):
Guys.

Speaker 10 (28:29):
They're like, hey, if we miss on the one target
we have, we'll get someone out of the portal. Right,
So that's where having multiple windows affects those teams. I
would be interested, and I apologize for not seeing Ryan
Day said ahead of time. I don't know what his
objection would be because he's going to have his choice
of guys regardless.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
Yeah, we're talking to Eric Henry of Horns two four
to seven. You can follow him at Eric c Henry Underscore.
He also going into this weekend. Obviously there's a lot
of point spread. I guess you would say a lot
of field out there to cover going into it. What
is your expectations not of the game. But what you

(29:06):
see from this team, because the side of a well
coached team is week to week improvement. What are you
what are your expectations going into this weekend?

Speaker 11 (29:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (29:15):
Can I give you something you know super quick on
this that you just doing the research every more time?
Steve starksh was talking about, Hey, man, I know how
tight the other windows are there? Steve Sarkisian was talking
about explosive plays on Monday, right, and it got me
to thinking Texas had fourteen explosive plays, and by definition,
explosive play in the stat book is a pass play

(29:38):
of fifteen yards or more or a run play of
ten ten yards or more against San Jose State guys.
For all the talk we came out a week one about, man,
is this offense going to be able to improve? Where
they're going to be? Fourteen explosive plays? You want to
know how many times last year's offense did that twice
regardless of the opponent. Okay, right, So that should give
you a tech if you're a Texas fan, give you

(29:59):
some encouragement. Man, This team didn't have DeAndre Moore for
half of the game, didn't have Countrayveon Wisner, doesn't have
Emmett Moseley.

Speaker 3 (30:07):
You're still trying to figure out, you know, kind of
how the offense gels.

Speaker 10 (30:10):
Yet you have that type of success in terms of
explosive plays. So to answer your question, what am I
looking for to build upon that? The same thing with
the defense, right, creating turnovers, momentum. You want to know
what helps with explosive plays. When the defense gives you
the ball, you get a momentum swing. It's like, all right,
we're gonna take that shot downfield, right, We're gonna call

(30:31):
a play that's a big hitter.

Speaker 7 (30:32):
That's what I'm looking to see building.

Speaker 10 (30:35):
Off of that, doing those complimentary football things, mastering that
aspect of the game so that when you get into
sec play, it's like second nature.

Speaker 3 (30:43):
No thing you hit on is perfect.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
And he said, taking advantage of complimentary football when off
defense gets the ball back to the offense, capitalize on
those turnovers. And that's exactly what the Texas football team
did last week. As always, we appreciate you, and I
think we're gonna see you on Saturday.

Speaker 10 (31:02):
Yeah, I beat it for the pregame show about twelve
twelve forty five.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
I beat her.

Speaker 9 (31:06):
Hang with y'allay he is looking slick as always.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
Our guy Eric Henry of Horns two four seven, make
sure you follow him at Eric c Henry Underscore. Coming
up next, we're gonna close out our number one.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
But I got a question for Mark Henry.

Speaker 1 (31:24):
There was a guy that came to visit the Dallas
Cowboys and is this a good thing? And oh yeah,
we got a big game tonight. I want to get
his thoughts on that as well. Right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zog
Great Stuff by Eric Henry of Horns two four seven.
Make sure you follow him at Eric c Henry Underscore

(31:47):
Coming up at eight seventeen. Don't want to miss it.
Mac Brown, former head coach of the Texas Long Horns,
Hall of Fame head coach and national champion, Mac Brown,
will be joining us on the show to talk about
his podcast that he's on with our guy Bob Blou
and of course Vince Young is on the podcast with them,

(32:08):
so they're having a lot going on and Ma's been busy.

Speaker 3 (32:11):
I love it for him. You know who else has
been busy? Laney Wilson.

Speaker 1 (32:15):
That's right, folks, Laney Wilson will be at the Moody
Center September the eighteenth. All you got to do is
get over to that iHeartRadio app go over there and
tap that red microphone on and AM thirteen hundred to
zone and lead the keyword for the day, Laney Laney
is the key word for a chance to win a

(32:37):
pair of tickets to go see Laney Wilson September the
eighteenth at the Moody Center. Also, make sure you get
a chance to listen to the voice of the Texas Longhorns,
our guy Craig Way, because we are your home for
Texas Athletics this afternoon from two to five with Cam
Parker and Jake Herman producing the show. Mark m Dallas

(33:00):
Boys are in the news uh uh again as usual
and one of the biggest conversations is the move for
Michael Parsons. We'll get a chance to see Michael Parsons tonight,
liveing and living color because Michael Parsons will be taking
on the Washington Commanders tonight coming.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
On dam Edge.

Speaker 1 (33:19):
It's a huge, huge game in the NFC. But one
of the biggest things that continues to be the question
is what are you going to do to replace one
Michael Parsons. You don't replace zone, but they're trying in
the mercenary, the Mercenary. Jadavian Clowney was in the building

(33:40):
yesterday to have an interview, as they would say, with
the Dallas Cowboys. And here is what Shaddy had to
say about Jadavian Clowney.

Speaker 11 (33:53):
Well, go back to Seattle days. Was with him there, guys,
you know, really good football player. He's uh uh, he's
missed playing the game a little bit.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
And the film obviously looks good.

Speaker 11 (34:03):
And you know, we're always in the business of, you know,
seeing what's out there and keeping an eye on all
good football players. But I would say the personal relationship
I have with him, the problems I know he can create,
both in the run, in the passes the main reasons here.

Speaker 3 (34:18):
So here is what his last few seasons has been.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
He was obviously with the Texans first round picks in
twenty fourteen.

Speaker 3 (34:26):
He was with them until twenty eighteen.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
Twenty nineteen, he was in Seattle, hens the reason why
Schottenheimer knows him so well. Then twenty twenty he went
to Tennessee, only played eight games. Twenty one and twenty
two he was in Cleveland. Twenty three he was in
Baltimore twenty four, he was in Carolina. During those times,

(34:51):
he was busy. He did his thing. He had nine
and a half sacks with Baltimore in twenty three.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
He had five and a half last year with Carolina.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
Does this move the needle for you to have Jadavian
Clowney in town with the Cowboys, but more importantly for
him to be a Dallas Cowboy.

Speaker 3 (35:14):
It definitely moves the needle.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
He's an outstanding player with a lot of technical savvy.
His athletic ability is nowhere near where it was when
he first came into the league, but still he's able
to cause a problem in situations.

Speaker 3 (35:29):
And you don't need him for the entire game.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
You need him to make at least three or four plays, right,
and I think that he still can do that, especially
with a meat grinder in the middle of the a gaps.

Speaker 3 (35:46):
You know. So you get a guy.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
Not named Mozzie Smith, not named Mozzi's don't mention his name. Now,
who there you go, Clark, that's what we're talking about.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
Now, he's gonna get one on ones with.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
If they make that if they if they decide to
make that move and add depth to that position. As well,
because they're gonna need it because they lost a guy
that for the next foreseeable future is going to be
a Hall of Famer and it's going to be an
All Pro the next seven years of his career.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
So they need to bring in somebody.

Speaker 2 (36:20):
Yeah, so it is uh, they got money to do
it now.

Speaker 3 (36:25):
They freed up some space over there.

Speaker 1 (36:27):
Space They've tried to figure out a way to get
that done. Speaking of Michael Parsons, as we mentioned tonight,
they will be taking on the Green Bay Packers will
be hosting the Washington Commanders in Thursday night football. You
start to look at this team and and Marcus believed
in what he saw. He said that early in the

(36:50):
in the in the program talking about Green Bay and
how you believe Jordan Love was going to be that guy.
You look at their defense with Shawn Gearre, a monster
that can move from sideline to sideline, and you bring
in a Michael Parsons, Their secondary seems to be a
lot crisper. They have done some things differently, But you

(37:11):
look at what the Washington Commanders are, they're a solid
football team as well, and they've done some things with
their squad to make themselves better too.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
Well, I mean, you look at that Washington offense. Let's
say before you talk about the defense. The Washington offense,
they brought in Deebo Samuel. Deebo Samuel is a utility knife.
He can play running back, slot, X and Z. They
move him around, which is.

Speaker 3 (37:43):
The X factor. Coach Sark always talked about it.

Speaker 2 (37:46):
You got a guy that's an X factor, put him
in motion and it changes the defense, the coverage. So
there you go. I mean, on offense, you don't even
have to mention the other acquisition. But defensive, they have
a scheme that's designed to put you on one on ones.
So the Washington commanders they want you to throw to

(38:08):
your star, but just know when you throw to him,
there's gonna be a player over the top. The linebacker
is gonna be sagging back in front of him. They're
gonna make it absolutely difficult. So they take away your
best player basically and force you to run the ball.

Speaker 3 (38:22):
And Green Bay they can stop the run.

Speaker 1 (38:25):
Yes, but did the move of leaving losing Clark hurt
their run defense? Did they feel good enough that they
could go get Micah to help on the edge Because
of the quarterbacks in the NFC North. When you look
at Jared Goff, you saw what he did last week
against Jared Goff, he was putting pressure on Golf.

Speaker 2 (38:47):
But that's why because they they are a conference where
they throw the ball more they run. So if you
if you fall into that, then you're gonna lose the game.
So the Commanders have to run the all effectively. They
have to run it and if you can do that,
you'll beat Green Bay.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
No doubt, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (39:06):
Our number one is in the books. Our number two
is just around the corner. We will be giving out
our predictions for the weekend and coming up at eight seventeen,
Mac Brown will be joining the Morning Kickoff on a
Predictions Thursday edition on.

we'll have coach Mack Brown winning us to talk all
things college football, his glory days at the University of
Texas and what he likes about this football team. And

(40:10):
he's got a new podcast. Folks, you want to make
sure that you tune in to hear about that.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
But you know what it is.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
Right now, it is time to give out our predictions
for the week. And needless to say, somebody didn't do
so well last Yeah, last week I went three and three, Mark,
Henry one in five, Marcus one and five?

Speaker 3 (40:43):
What the.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
I just exactly why I'm laughing because that face says
it all.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
We were not happy with y'all's choices, but for entertainment
purposes only, and.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
That is exactly what I was about to lead into
for this week. I want you to know that this
is strictly for entertainment purchases.

Speaker 3 (41:07):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (41:08):
Purchase them, not purposes. Purchase these. We're gonna start with
the n F of L Marcus. Where our music at? Man?

Speaker 3 (41:17):
But man, what else? What's going on?

Speaker 12 (41:19):
Man?

Speaker 3 (41:19):
You know we haven't picks today?

Speaker 1 (41:21):
I'm gonna start with my man, Mark Henry with his
first game in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (41:27):
What you got my man, well, Harge, after last week's debacle.

Speaker 3 (41:35):
I'm gonna go are. We're gonna go.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
College picks first, NFL picks first. Okay, let's go NFL
picks first. I'm gonna go Washington Commanders versus the Green
Bay Packers, and I'm going Green Bay.

Speaker 3 (41:49):
Over minus three. Are you taking the over.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
Thirty one twenty seven over the Commanders winning them?

Speaker 3 (41:57):
No?

Speaker 1 (41:58):
Okay, well, we're gonna take Green Bay minus three in
this pick. Already got that written down, So Mark Henry
is minus three Green Bay. I too, am taking the
Green Bay Packers tonight.

Speaker 3 (42:12):
They are minus three over.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
The Washington Commanders.

Speaker 3 (42:17):
I will take that as well. Marcus. Your first pick.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
I'm taking the Chargers over the Raiders.

Speaker 3 (42:25):
Might want to talk to the microphone. Playoff Charges over
the Raiders minus three. Okay, I like that. I like that.
Go with your second NFL.

Speaker 9 (42:35):
Pick, the Falcons plus three and a half against the Vikings,
Mark Henry.

Speaker 2 (42:43):
I'm going to go Buccaneers versus the Texans, and sorry, Marcus,
but Buccaneers thirty Texas twenty four now.

Speaker 1 (42:54):
It's going to be plus two and a half for
the Texans.

Speaker 3 (42:58):
So if you're.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
Betting that that is the number that you take. I
am going to go Chicago Bears. The Chicago Bears, they
let me down last week. Let me They are a
plus six and a half ten the Music Jack, I
am going to take them. They are six and a
half point dog. I will take the Bears plus six

(43:22):
and a half.

Speaker 2 (43:23):
Mark Henry Oh, I'm gonna go Giants Cowboys, and I'm
going with the Cowboys unfortunately and twenty seven seventeen, so they.

Speaker 1 (43:34):
Will cover the minus three. They are four and a
half point favorite. Cowboys minus four.

Speaker 9 (43:41):
Marcus I am taking the Cincinnati Bengals minus three and
a half against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Speaker 1 (43:49):
And I am taking the Pittsburgh Steelers. I loved what
I saw last week, the way that they were moving around.
Aaron Rodgers shocked me with the four touchdowns they are
taking on the Seattle Seahawks, and I am taking the
Steelers minus three.

Speaker 3 (44:07):
Now we go to the college game.

Speaker 1 (44:09):
And by the way, these picks will be posted on
AM thirteen hundred The Zone on social media at AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. We're gonna go to the college
ranks and I will start it off. Texas A and M.
Texas A and M fight, naggies. I'm jumping out there
with you. I think this is a better football team

(44:29):
than people are giving them credit for. I think Notre
Dame is kind of at a stagnant spot. I'm gonna
take Texas A and M to cover the six and
a half against Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (44:41):
Mark, you know I'm gonna do the same thing. I'm
gonna stay right there with you. I'm gonna go at
you pick Notre Dame though I picked Notre Dame twenty
four ten Texas A and M.

Speaker 1 (44:53):
Team, so he is taking Notre Dame and the minus
six and a half. Marcus, jump out there and let
us know that big number you got out there.

Speaker 9 (45:00):
Man, Wisconsin plus twenty and a half against Alabama.

Speaker 1 (45:04):
Alabama is you're not believing in Alabama. I just believe
Wisconsin's gonna cover Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're not believing in
Alabama pulling away from them. We're gonna stay with you,
Marcus with your next.

Speaker 3 (45:16):
Pick, y'all gonna hate me on this one.

Speaker 9 (45:19):
You tap plus forty one and a half against Texas,
I believe in that.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
I don't believe we had to hate you, but I
wouldn't be careful walking out the studio. Mark, I'm gonna
go Georgia versus Tennessee and I'm gonna go Georgia thirty
one Tennessee twenty four.

Speaker 1 (45:39):
So you have Georgia covering the three and a half.

Speaker 3 (45:43):
Mark Henry took Georgia.

Speaker 1 (45:44):
I am taking LSU minus seven and a half.

Speaker 3 (45:48):
Gret No Smyer.

Speaker 1 (45:50):
They have the potential to be a national championship team.
Harold Perkins is playing great on defense. I am going
to take LSU minus seven and a half versus Florida.
I'm gonna stay there. I'm gonna go Vandy. I'm taking
Vanderbilt plus four and a half over with playing South Carolina.

Speaker 3 (46:14):
That is going to be my final pick.

Speaker 2 (46:16):
Mark Henry, I'm gonna go Texas versus U tip and
I'm going Texas fifty one and U tip three.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
Texas is guaranteed the finally cover.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
They finally cover, but give them one turnover and give
them a place where they.

Speaker 3 (46:36):
Get three point get three points.

Speaker 1 (46:38):
Okay, So you got Texas minus forty one and a
half and Marcus, I.

Speaker 9 (46:43):
Am gonna also take the Georgia over Tennessee three and
a half.

Speaker 3 (46:47):
I like it. So there are our picks.

Speaker 1 (46:50):
Mark Henry's picks green Bay minus three, the Cowboys minus
four and a half, Tampa Bay plus two and a half,
Notre Dame minus six and a half, and Texas forty
one and a half. In Georgia minus forty I mean
minus three and a half.

Speaker 3 (47:09):
Marcus is picked.

Speaker 1 (47:10):
He picks the Chargers minus three, the Falcons plus three
and a half, the Bengals minus three and a half,
Wisconsin plus twenty and a half, UTEP minus forty one
I mean plus forty one and a half, and the
Georgia Bulldogs minus three and a half. I'm taking Green Bay,
the Bears, the Steelers, Texas A and m LSU and Vanderbilt.

Speaker 3 (47:36):
And those are our picks for week two.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
I will post them on AM thirteen hundred the Zones
show page and you can make fun of it. You
can talk about it, you can comment and see if
you like it. But right now is I'm even. Mark
and Marcus are trying to catch up to just be even.
This could be a good good week for you both.

(48:01):
Look at you, I'm being for real. Week one, you
even you ain't lose no money for me. That's what
I'm saying. It's just week one.

Speaker 2 (48:08):
I thought I was looking for contentment, but you know
you you convinced me.

Speaker 3 (48:12):
Yeah, man, I'm not. This is trust me.

Speaker 1 (48:15):
As someone whose cousin has lost some things in their life,
you understand what this is all about.

Speaker 3 (48:23):
Yeah, it's for entertainment purposes.

Speaker 1 (48:25):
But I was gonna call you, uh and check on
you to see after those first couple of picks, the
only saving grace.

Speaker 3 (48:31):
For you was your your Sooners getting the win.

Speaker 2 (48:34):
Last Wait a minute, whoa whoacuse me?

Speaker 3 (48:37):
Your son Sooners? Okay, yeah, his mom Sooners, Yeah, Mama's Centers. Now,
so let me ask you this.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
Speaking of that, how was his first game for the
Oklahoma Senters.

Speaker 3 (48:50):
Man, he loved it. He wanted to get some playing time.

Speaker 2 (48:54):
But you know what I told him, I said, Man,
you know how many guys staying on the sideline for
not just one year, sometimes two years, you know, maybe
three years.

Speaker 3 (49:02):
Look at look at Texas.

Speaker 2 (49:03):
Offensive line right now, Look how long it took Cole Hudson.
Cole Hudson to be a starter and to get consistent
playing time. Like just know your role yep, as the
Ryan Simmons would say, and the Rock made it famous.

Speaker 3 (49:19):
Know your role, right, do your job. Just do that's you.
Just do your job.

Speaker 1 (49:24):
Just do what you're supposed to do. Man, just do
what you're supposed to do. Well, that picture looked like
he was sweating, like he was out there was humid
up there. To get under them, show to pass. It's
under them, show to pass. It is definitely hot underneath them.
Shoulder pass. Well, I'm happy for him. I'm happy to
that he's getting a chance to do the things that

(49:45):
he really wanted to do, and that was to play
college football and get his opportunity.

Speaker 2 (49:50):
So now you got to hang out with his best friend, Blake,
who played for Michigan, who they played side by side
at vander griff So like it was a good day
for him.

Speaker 1 (49:59):
That's awesome. That's awesome. And now this week I forget
who they're playing. I didn't even look at their schedule
because why no, we'll talk about I'm just kidding. We'll
definitely talk about a lot. We'll talk about Oklahoma and
Temple tomorrow. Oklahoma is a twenty two and a half
point favorite versus Temple. I don't even know if Stan

(50:22):
Draken is still there. We got to check on Stan
Draken to see if he still got a job over there. Yeah,
see what he got going on. But now's the time, folks.
Coming up next, we have Hall of Famer head coach,
national champion and co host of The Stampede. His new podcast,
The One and Only Mac Brown joins us next right

(50:43):
here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen
hundred The Zone. Mark Welcome back to the morning kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
We are your home for Texas football and Texas at Athletics.
And the man that is joining us right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen one hundred The Zone knows all

(51:07):
things about the Texas Longhorns and their athletic program.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
He was inducted into.

Speaker 1 (51:12):
The College Football Hall of Fame in twenty eighteen. He
is a national championship head coach here at the University
of Texas, and he is now the co host of
The Stampede with Bob Bloo and Vince Young. And he
just celebrated his thirty second wedding anniversary with Miss Sally Brown.

(51:35):
He is the legendary coach Mac Brown Good morning, coach.

Speaker 5 (51:40):
Good morning guys, thanks for having me out.

Speaker 1 (51:42):
We appreciate you taking the time to get up with us.
I know that you probably got a tea time coming
up in about an hour or so, so I appreciate you.
I appreciate you taking the time to hang out with us,
and I want to get right into it because the
University of Texas is at a spot where you helped
build it, and Texas went through that long and great

(52:04):
run here on the forty Acres. There was a little
lull in between that, but now it seems to be
a sending. And you've always talked about in order to
be a great coach, you have to have great people
around you, and that is what it seems that Coach
Sarkisian has been able to do. Now that you have
been around and seen the program, what are some of

(52:25):
the things that stand out to you about where this
program is compared to what it was like when you
were the head coach here.

Speaker 5 (52:32):
Mike Number one.

Speaker 12 (52:34):
The Los Dodds was he had quite the run with
thirty two years as the athletics director at the University
of Texas, and he helped us get from where we
were to where we had to go and Chris del
Connie's doing the same. Just to look at the pregame environment.
It's not a football game, it's an event. I mean,

(52:56):
it is a showpiece now. Sally said the other day,
I don't care about the game, but I'd like to
go see the pregame and Beebo Boulevard and all the
things that come with it that Chris has done so.
And I was so impressed at eleven o'clock in the
heat that Texas fans showed up and they were loud
and made a difference in the ball game last weekend.

(53:18):
So that's a great start. And then coach Sarkesian has
worked for Nick Say, but he's worked for Pete Carroll.
He's been a head coach at Washington in a city,
he's been a head coach at USC in a city,
he's coached pro ball, and now the college game has headed.

Speaker 5 (53:35):
More toward the pro game than ever before.

Speaker 12 (53:37):
So he's in a perfect situation to be the great
head coach at Texas that he is right now. And
he's also hired a tremendous staff, and again Chris lets
him hire who he wants to and who he needs to.
Just bringing Dewayne Kenneback sixteen years at the university and
two Thorpe winners, and so many All Americans and so

(53:59):
many great players.

Speaker 5 (54:00):
PK has done a great job with the defense, and
then Steve is so good with the offense.

Speaker 12 (54:06):
He and coach Flood have been consistent, and Steve's been
able to keep his coordinators and that's something that's very
hard to do with all three and special teams. Offense
and defensive coordinators haven't changed, and he's maybe the only
school in the country that hasn't changed coordinators over the
last few years. And they're right there. People keep asking

(54:27):
me what they have to do, what they have to do, Well,
you gotta win one more game. Yeah, you have to
make two more plays. But if you're in the neighborhood
and you're in a position where you know what it
feels like to be in the playoffs, you know how
it feels to be down to the end in the
fourth quarter, it's just gonna take a team that stays
healthy and a team that, just as coach Roy used

(54:52):
to tell me, when you're you're good enough and you're
healthy enough, it's going to happen.

Speaker 2 (54:57):
Coach I believe before I get football, Uh I want
to get I believe in giving somebody the flowers, you know,
not a not at a funeral, but in person, up front,
and I want to give you your flowers because you
allowed a young Mark Henry, who you didn't know, to
come to the University of Texas and train in the

(55:18):
in the weight room with mad Dog and the rest
of your coaching staff and your strength coaching staff, and
a lot of what I did in my in my
prime was because I was allowed to train at the
best facility in the city.

Speaker 3 (55:32):
And I wanted to thank you for that.

Speaker 5 (55:35):
Thank you.

Speaker 12 (55:35):
I used to walk down and say who is that?

Speaker 5 (55:40):
Say I is too old? I said, matter found up
here and get him in school. Man.

Speaker 2 (55:46):
Well, now now that we got that out of the way,
coach like you, you're a You've been known as a CEO,
not just as a great coach, but uh in a
Hall of fame coach, but also like one of the
best do it in the business from behind the board.

Speaker 3 (56:04):
What role did you enjoy the most.

Speaker 2 (56:07):
I know coaching is fun and winning is fun, because
you shod a lot of that, but you had to
get a real strong sense of accomplishment from putting everything together.

Speaker 12 (56:19):
Mark, what I enjoyed the most was being offensive coordinator.

Speaker 5 (56:22):
Wow, I love that.

Speaker 12 (56:24):
And that was before I became a head coaching and
I wanted to be a head coach, and I wasn't
very smart. I saw Steve Sloan become a head coach
in his late twenties. I saw Bill Battle become a
head coach in his late twenties, so I said, I
want to be a head coach. I didn't think about
being a head coach at a place where you could win.
If you don't get a place you win, you don't

(56:45):
get the stage.

Speaker 5 (56:45):
So that's the biggest part of it.

Speaker 12 (56:48):
But I also loved taking a young person when he
came in. I loved recruiting because I can sit there
and I wouldn't know more about recruiting Mark than the
families because I'd done it for forty years or thirty
something years and they've done it for six months. So
I actually took the family and I would sit down

(57:08):
with you and your family, Mark, and say what would
be best for you because that's where you're going to
end up anyway. And I would tell some kids and
the coaches would get mad at me. I don't think
it's best for you to come here, and here's why.
If I was you, i'd do this. And they say,
what are you doing? I said, he's not going to
make it here anyway, it's not his fit. He's not

(57:30):
going to make it. One of the impressive things to
me about what Steve's doing is they've got good kids.
I hear them interviewed, I see them, I see what
they say and how they said, and they fit here.
And that's really really important to have the proper fit.
So I loved recruiting. And then the other thing you
in coaching, You change kids' lives and you've got to

(57:52):
be really, really careful. Billy Graham said one time that
a coach can change more lives in one year than
an average person can share in a lifetime.

Speaker 5 (58:01):
Well, what I've learned at.

Speaker 12 (58:03):
Seventy four years old is so many of those young
guys that I coach, Mark and Mike will come up
now and say in they're forty and fifty. And I
always said it was a forty year decision, not a
four Well now it's going to be a fifty year
decision because they're all getting older. But when they come
up now, I said, remember when I was a sophomore
and you jumped on me.

Speaker 5 (58:23):
Coach.

Speaker 12 (58:23):
That saved my life. Remember when you came to dad's funeral.
Remember when I was messing up and you grabbed me
and pulled me in the corner and said, look, I
know what you're doing, and you've got to stop it.

Speaker 5 (58:33):
And you got to stop it now.

Speaker 12 (58:35):
So what you do as a coach, you got to
be really, really careful what you say to a young guy,
because he listens. You're a powerful figure in his life.

Speaker 3 (58:45):
And so not only do.

Speaker 12 (58:47):
You put yourself in a position to change some lives,
you saved some lives. We hit a young person in
the mountains of North Carolina that committed suicide, and we
were very close to him.

Speaker 5 (59:00):
Rent. We just got into North Carolina the second time.

Speaker 12 (59:02):
So we ran back and had a team meeting and said, hey, guys,
I don't know a lot about suicide, but I know
that it's not it's hurtful to your friends, hurtful to
your family and your parents and so and I'm not
supposed to talk to you about it because I'm not qualified,
But if you're struggling, come and talk to us. Come on, man,
it's not worth it's not worth football. It's not worth anything.

Speaker 5 (59:24):
Let's talk.

Speaker 12 (59:25):
And we had a young guy named Jake Lawler that
came upstairs right after the media and said, Coach, I
was on a bridge last night. Wow, and I need help.
And that's that's the power of the coach. So you've
got to win to keep a job. You've got to
win to be able to hang around and have the

(59:45):
influence on the players because they want to win. But
when you do that, you also have a tremendous responsibility
to be a strong personal figure in those young people's lives.

Speaker 1 (59:56):
We're talking to the legendary coach Mack Brown. He was
inducted in to the College Football Hall of Fame in
twenty eighteen. He is now doing a podcast with Bob
Blou and Vince Young called The Stampede, which is outstanding.
Make sure you check it out. And Coach, I know
you just touched on some of the things that I

(01:00:16):
was going to ask you about about changing people's lives
and being a part and being present. Last night I
did a football clinic, Ladies Football Clinic with Derek Johnson
and Norman Watkins, and one of the things that Derek
said about his recruitment with you was the honesty in
the way that you came into his mother's house and

(01:00:37):
made her feel like, Derek, you need to commit tonight
to coach Brown because he is such a great man.
But you also said after winning that national championship that
don't let this be the greatest thing that you've ever
accomplished in your life. And Derek is living proof of
that statement of what you were talking about.

Speaker 12 (01:00:56):
Mike, when I said that after the game, you're it's
first time we'd won a national championship for thirty five years.
So what do you say, my good lord man, this
is a cool moment. And I see Roger Clements, and
I see Lands Armstrong, and I see Matthew McConaughey, and I.

Speaker 5 (01:01:13):
See Rex and all of a sudden, You're you're sitting
there and you're you're saying, Okay, what's good enough? So
I say thank you?

Speaker 12 (01:01:23):
And then I'm thinking, I don't want these guys to
be forty years old and all they've done is talk
about this game.

Speaker 5 (01:01:31):
Well, then we.

Speaker 12 (01:01:32):
Said congratulations on the wind, but let's let's let's make
this figure. They looked at me like I was crazy.

Speaker 5 (01:01:39):
He said, what's this old man talking about?

Speaker 12 (01:01:42):
Let's let's use this to be better fathers and better
husbands and have more influence in the community. And now
it's amazing how many of the guys come up and say,
you know, we get it now. We didn't get it
that night, but we get it now. And it's it's
one of those things when you're playing a two time
national champion. You weren't sitting there thinking about what you

(01:02:03):
were going to say after the post game win. You
had to win first. So it was just that moment.
And I will say, before I spoke to the the team,
we had Reggie Bush and Matt Lioner to come and
knock on the door because they missed me on the field,
and they said, can we see coach for a minute.
And I walked over before I spoke to the team,

(01:02:23):
and they both said, we we did not want to
leave the stadium without congratulating you what a great win.

Speaker 5 (01:02:30):
And nobody talks about those things, And that.

Speaker 12 (01:02:33):
Was one of the coolest moments for those two young
people at a time where they were so disappointed to
come and do that. And then it was my mother's birthday,
and my mother's pretty spunky and we.

Speaker 5 (01:02:44):
Lost her butt. She came up and said, Okay, what
are we going to do for next year to beat this?

Speaker 3 (01:02:54):
I love it. I love it. I love it.

Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
Because you've been around, you said, this is for fifty.

Speaker 5 (01:03:01):
Years, forty seven years in coaching.

Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
Forty seven years, and you have seen thousands of players.
Out of those thousand players, who is the most dominant
of all the players that you There was just no
answer for him.

Speaker 3 (01:03:20):
Who was that guy?

Speaker 5 (01:03:22):
Oh?

Speaker 12 (01:03:22):
Gosh, Mark you you We just talked about Derek Johnson.
I saw him make thirty tackles in a high school
game at wait though high school? Yep, I mean thirty tackles.
I wanted to get out and kiss him. Then, man,
this guy here's your defense. We don't need to be
What can he play?

Speaker 5 (01:03:41):
How good is he?

Speaker 6 (01:03:42):
No?

Speaker 12 (01:03:43):
He ran over everybody and made ever tackle. And he's
nice and he's smart. And early in the year Carl
re saim, he doesn't know what to do. I said, yes,
he does.

Speaker 5 (01:03:53):
I saw him know what to do thirty times in
the game. And he said, well he didn't know the scheme.
I said, didn't change this game. Put him in.

Speaker 12 (01:04:01):
Well we only played three linebackers and we got three starters.

Speaker 5 (01:04:04):
I said, play four.

Speaker 3 (01:04:06):
I don't care I won't kill.

Speaker 5 (01:04:09):
And then you talk about Ricky Williams, who's one of
the smartest players and people I have ever been around.

Speaker 12 (01:04:16):
He was such a competitor. Every time he touched the
ball in practice, he'd run to the end zone and score.
So we had to start moving the drills down so
we wouldn't kill him in that one hundred degree heat.
And he won to cover kickoffs. He wasn't play linebacker.
I mean he was crazy. He was so competitive. And
then you look at Ben Young. I mean he absolutely

(01:04:38):
took over the Rose Bowl for two years in a row,
just absolutely took over.

Speaker 5 (01:04:45):
They said he owned the Rose Bowl.

Speaker 12 (01:04:49):
So you start talking about those guys and Roy Williams
and I kind of do it Mark and Mike in
a by position. You start looking at Ricky Williams. Then
you have to talk about Jamal Charles. Then you have
to talk about Selvin Young, and then you say, oh
my gosh, we're leaving out Cedric Vincent, maybe one of

(01:05:09):
the best to ever play in tough and smart, and
then just hodjas Mitchell, and I mean you just go down.
Then you go to linebacker and you get check off's,
and then you go to ride receivers, and that one
group of wide receivers when you start looking at Sloan
Thomas and BJ Johnson and Roy Williams and Tony Jefferson
and those guys were so good. Then you start looking

(01:05:30):
at Boast Gafe and David Thomas and the tight.

Speaker 5 (01:05:33):
Ends that came through there.

Speaker 12 (01:05:34):
And then the offensive Blineman four of the five played
in the NFL a long time, and that national championship team,
and Will Allen and the other one was in camp
so and defensive Blneman. Rod Wright's going in the Hall
of Honor this weekend tomorrow, in fact. But you start
looking at a rack pole and I mean, just start
checking that list. And then defensive backs, Gosh, that that thing.

(01:05:59):
That's like a Hall of fame, just to start talking
about the defensive backs we had. And then you get
into the Justin Tuckers and Richmond McGee's and and and
Vince said he hated kickers and punters because he never wanted.

Speaker 5 (01:06:11):
To kick the punt.

Speaker 12 (01:06:12):
I said, yeah, you kept living from even lettering. And
I'd say, Vince, we.

Speaker 5 (01:06:18):
Need to kick a pill goal here. He said, no,
they can't stop us on fourth down. Coach.

Speaker 12 (01:06:22):
So he never wanted to kick, and he said, I
don't hate the people, but I hate the position. They
shouldn't happen. You should go forever fourth down And that
was just this and I'm and I'm loving being on
the podcast with Vents. It's so much fun. His personality
is so good.

Speaker 3 (01:06:36):
He's got to be laughing.

Speaker 5 (01:06:38):
He's coming up.

Speaker 12 (01:06:39):
He said, you laughed more now and you used to.
I said, yeah, I had to put up with you.

Speaker 10 (01:06:43):
Coach.

Speaker 3 (01:06:43):
What you know?

Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
You know the game, You probably know the quarter I
think it was right before halftime Derrick Johnson. Uh. I
think there was like a big pass and Derek took off.
He was forty or fifty yards away from the guy
and ran him down to stop a touchdown right before half.
It was one of the most impressive things I ever saw.

(01:07:05):
I don't think a cornerback could have ran this guy down.

Speaker 3 (01:07:08):
Uh do you remember that play?

Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
I do.

Speaker 12 (01:07:12):
In fact, the player I remember the most from Derek
was chasing the quarterback down at Oklahoma and batting the
ball from behind and knocking the ball loose.

Speaker 5 (01:07:23):
While the guy was running. And Derek didn't, He didn't
go to.

Speaker 12 (01:07:26):
The ground right, knocked the ball out and then went
and got the ball. I mean, it was just he's
just uh, he is such a freak on the field
and such a kind heart. You absolutely can't talk to
Dereck Johnson and see how vicious he was on the field.

Speaker 5 (01:07:50):
And how he ran and knocked people out. Now and
he got there fast.

Speaker 1 (01:07:53):
And he said, he said now that because he's so slim.
When he was big, he was DJ. He was DJ.
Now that he's slimmed down, he's now Derek again.

Speaker 5 (01:08:03):
All those kids, so he's moren't out. He's a bother
to what a nice man.

Speaker 12 (01:08:09):
And it's it's fun for me now twenty years after
the national championship, and and and people ask about coaching,
being a head coach for thirty six years, that's your
extended family. That that's what you think about all the time.
That's the that when you say it's a forty year decision,
not a ford, you got to mean it. When guys
call and say, coach, I need help, I need suggestions,

(01:08:32):
I need a thought, I mean, that's what you do.

Speaker 5 (01:08:35):
Then you never lose that, you never leave these.

Speaker 12 (01:08:37):
Guys and and and that's what's what's so important. And
it's fun to see them with their new families and
get pictures on Father's Day and Christmas and Thanksgiving and
just see that, Uh, they've done what I asked them
to do.

Speaker 5 (01:08:53):
After the National championship game in five.

Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
Well, you have done an excellent job. You were talking
about that team and all I kept thinking in my
mind is coach mac Brown can recruit and that's why
all those players were able to be that successful at
this university. I want to let you go, but I
wanted to tell you thank you. When me and my
family came out to North Carolina. You were kind of
busy and you set us up with a tour and

(01:09:19):
the kids from the soccer team had an unbelievable time
touring the University of North Carolina and I can't thank
you enough for that.

Speaker 5 (01:09:27):
Well, thank you, Mike and Mark.

Speaker 12 (01:09:29):
We appreciate what you guys do and can't wait for
this weekend. You know, with El Paso coming in, it's
just another opportunity to grow, another opportunity to play to
a standard, another opportunity to get where we need to do.
And Mike and Mark, I've always thought it's not hard
to be nice. Takes seventy four muscles to smile, takes

(01:09:49):
one hundred and fourteen to frown. So I've always wanted
to take the easier path, so you smile, you can.

Speaker 5 (01:09:55):
Be nice to people. And Coach Roll said something one time.

Speaker 12 (01:09:59):
He said, you're very lucky to be the head coach
at the University of Texas, and don't ever walk by
anybody young or old without stopping and speaking and taking
a picture and signing an autograph. And that's a blessing
for you that you can do so little to make
somebody smile. And just remember that as soon as you're gone,
the next guy is going to be taking those pictures

(01:10:20):
of sign those autographs. So it's not about you, it's
about the position.

Speaker 3 (01:10:24):
And he was right.

Speaker 12 (01:10:25):
But I'm very, very blessed Sally and I are glad
to be back in Austin. You mentioned thirty two years.
Can you imagine somebody putting up with me for thirty
two years?

Speaker 3 (01:10:35):
Coach, you're a gym coach.

Speaker 5 (01:10:38):
I'm missing Mark.

Speaker 12 (01:10:39):
I'm sucking up every day to try to make it
thirty three.

Speaker 2 (01:10:43):
Well about miss Sally that we said hello, please.

Speaker 5 (01:10:47):
My money, I won't know her hello.

Speaker 12 (01:10:49):
She had to get up and help me get on
the computer because I had an assistant for thirty six
years now I don't have one, so I'm doing better.
I'm learning, but it's a it just takes me a
little fall sometime to get going.

Speaker 3 (01:11:03):
It's okay. Mark is going through the same confidence.

Speaker 5 (01:11:08):
Sorry, Mark, I mean to pull you into this.

Speaker 1 (01:11:11):
We appreciate you. Thank you so much, coach for taking
the time. I know I've been bugging you, but this
was what this has made our day.

Speaker 3 (01:11:17):
So we appreciate week.

Speaker 12 (01:11:19):
Thank you, Mike. Sorry, I haven't been able to get on.
I've been traveling all over the place and having fun,
and as you said, it's hard to when you're swinging
the golf club, it's hard to be on the radio.

Speaker 13 (01:11:30):
Thankes you a little harder too well. Hit him straight
today and we appreciate you. Thanks coach. Thanks you goage
there is You're welcome there is. Hall of Fame coach
Mac Brown. Wow, that was fun.

Speaker 1 (01:11:42):
Co host of the Stampede with Bob Bloo and Vince Young.
Thirty two years of marriage that he's trying to make
to thirty three and of course he's been inducted into
the College Football Hall of Fame. We'll be back right
here on the morning kick off on Sports Radio and
thirteen hundred the Zone cannot I cannot thank coach mac
Brown enough for giving us the time today. What an

(01:12:05):
outstanding interview, so much fun, a lot of informative information
in there that coach mac Brown had given us about
his time on the Forty Acres, what he sees with
this team, and how this team matches up with the
great teams that he had throughout his time on the
forty Acres. Also, I want to thank Eric Henry of

(01:12:29):
Horns two four seven for joining us today as well
breaking down the Texas injury report and everything that's going
on with that. We've got some guys that are down,
but they're not out for sure. DeAndre Moore is dealing
with a concussion. They say he is day to day.
We'll find out more today as we will have our

(01:12:49):
interview with coach sark on our final presser of the week.
As they get ready for UTEP Alex January, and Trey
Wisner may also will be dealing with that. As we've
talked about these next couple couple of games, Texas should
win these games pretty handily. Then you have the bye

(01:13:10):
week after the next two weeks, so three weeks, and
then you get into SEC play, so hopefully we'll have
more information today as coach Shark addresses it with our
media availability, also wanted to talk a little bit about
our picks. They will be posted on AM thirteen hundred

(01:13:32):
The Zone on social media. Make sure you check it out.
I'm three and three on the season. Mark and Marcus
are one and five on the season. It's not a
good start to the season, but that's why we play.
That's why you play the game. This week's games, I

(01:13:52):
will start with tonight's game. I will be taking Green
Bay as will Mark minus three Thursday night kickoff. Make
sure you come and hang out with me down at
Little Woodrow's on West sixth Street, presented by bud Light
and Brown Distributing. We will be there for Thursday Night
football from seven to nine, So come and hang out
and get all the drink specials and enjoy at least

(01:14:15):
the first half of this football game. I've taken the
Bears plus six and a half, the Steelers minus three
and a half, Texas A and M plus six and
a half, LSUS seven and a half, and Vanderbilt plus
four and a half. Mark is going with Green Bay
minus three tonight. The Cowboys for the weekend minus four

(01:14:36):
and a half, Tampa Bay plus two and a half,
Notre Dame minus six and a half, Tennessee, I mean,
excuse me, Texas minus forty one and a half, and

the Chargers minus three and a half, Falcons plus three
and a half, Bengals minus three and a half, Wisconsin

(01:14:59):
plus and a half, UTEP plus forty one and a half,
and the Georgia Bulldogs as well minus three and a half.
Also wanted to bring this up because I want you

voice of the Texas Longhorns, where you can hear all

(01:15:19):
the Texas Longhorn athletic games right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred the Zone. As we are the home
of Texas football, we're also the home of the Houston
Texans and the Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys can now
be heard on our airways on ninety eight point one

(01:15:40):
KVET So make sure if you're driving around and you're
looking for the Cowboys game and you're trying to find it.
We now have the Dallas Cowboys as part of our
cluster here with the Kve family. I wanted to get
into this conversation real quick because we talked about Texas
volleyball and what they were able to do. Texas volleyball

(01:16:03):
this season has shown to be one of the best
teams in the land. They come into this matchup and
get the w against their fourth ranked opponent. They started
the season coming in knowing that this was going to
be a big year for them recruiting wise, and everything.

Speaker 3 (01:16:22):
Else that has happened.

Speaker 1 (01:16:23):
Excuse me, I said, that's there four and oh they're
actually five and zero with wins over Creighton, who was
number twelve, number eight Wisconsin, number six Stanford, and number
four Louisville. This is in the final set they had
to go to first to fifteen. They went five and

(01:16:45):
Texas wins the match three matches to two and was
able to secure the bag last night. If you do
not watch women's volleyball, you are missing out, not just Texas,
across the land. There are some superior athletes that are
out there that have done some amazing things, and you

(01:17:06):
definitely got your money's worth last night watching the Texas
women get after it before we let you go. As
you know, today is nine eleven, so take a moment
to reflect. I remember where I was on nine to eleven.
I was I just lost in the playoffs in a
baseball game, and I was in the valley in Edinburgh

(01:17:29):
getting ready McCallum to get on a plane, I mean
on a bus to bust back. And that's when we
found out about everything that was going on on nine
to eleven. So just remember, take some time, remember those
that were lost in this situation, and just pray for

(01:17:50):
our everyone's safety. Marcus, there's so much that we are
going to get into tomorrow because it is a feel
good ball Friday, so make sure you tune in. We'll
have special guests Tommy Yarsh of the Dallas Cowboys dot com.
We'll have Ann Parker Coleman joining us talking all things

(01:18:13):
Texas high school football, and oh yeah, Tonight on KBV,
O Hendrickson will be hosting the Halt Hayes Hawks as
they come into puff Flugerville tonight. So good luck to
the Hawks. But I'm talking about the ones from Flugerville.
From Marcus from Mark.

Speaker 3 (01:18:33):
I'm Hardballhart and just remember this.

Speaker 1 (01:18:35):
Don't believe everything you see, because even salt looks like Sugar.
Get to the podcast page for that great interview with
Matt Brown. Tune in to the Craig Wave Show this afternoon,
