We're efforting coach Vic Shaeffer. That's right.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
We're gonna have Coach Vic Shaeffer here in just a
little bit. But we will talk a little bit about
something else. But Mark yesterday, well, this week has been
a very very very very busy week. As far as
as it been a bye week, this was probably the
busiest week of availabilities that I've ever been in ever,
(02:37):
Like this has been one of those those weeks where
it's like, oh, it's a bye week, let's have baseball,
media appearances, let's have basketball, because basketball is started on
the forty Acres. As far as practicing for men's and
women's sports, then you gotta start looking at the Ryder Cup.
Major League Baseball there has been. Of course, it's football season,
(03:02):
so you had that availability as well. So there is
a ton of things that are happening at this particular moment,
but a lot of them are really good on the
forty Acres.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
And what I mean by that.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Last night, women's volleyball continued its rain as they took
on Vanderbilt at home and they get another victory. So
the Texas Longhorns women's volleyball team, which is ranked number
two right now is the is undefeated at nine and zero,
and of course you can't believe that Miss Spears continues
(03:37):
to slam that volleyball and they get another big victory
last night.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Man, that's first thing I said when I came in
text is up, yep? Are we going to play the music?
We don't have time to play the music. We got
coach Shafer coming out. Yep, that's exactly what I said.
That's exactly what I said. We ain't got time for
all that.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
But you start to look around and look at what
this team has been able to do. They have been very,
very impressive as they go about their business and they
swept another well, you start looking at it and you
think about the sweeps that they've had, and you look
at how they handled themselves on the court. Your boy
(04:16):
was here, Marcus Spears was here last night. I saw that.
You know, he made his appearance in the ATX. So
you start to understand what it looks like and the
ability of everyone at this university. You start looking at
all the sports across the board, You look at the
coaching staffs, and what they have been being able to
(04:38):
create on the forty acres is an energy that a
lot of people truly don't understand.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, I think that Texas being Texas, and you have
all of the alumni, and you have the player's kids
are now starting to come and play, and then you
have other outside sources, if you will, bringing their kids
here because it's just a great university.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Connection is great, and you have somewhere.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
To go after the sports because it's only you're only
gonna be here four years, five years max.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Well you think that.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Unless you unless you pip here your homeboy where you
can play it till you're thirty years old. Uh, but
that's that's that's where we are at the University of Texas.
People want to come here and Texas wants kids that
just like in wrestling, it's.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
The same thing.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Like you have a lot of athletes that performed. Kids
performed because they know what the they know what the
business is right, and they know what you're going there for.
You're not going there to kick it on sixth Street.
You're going there to make a legacy for yourself. So
like that, that is that is important in the recruiting
and in the way Texas brings in athletes.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Now, well that's the thing too, you talk You just
brought it up. It's the recruiting aspect, like the recruiting
of the athlete now, and this happens at a lot
of schools and I've talked to coaches about it. I've
got a son that's being recruited now for basketball. You
went through it with Jacob and all this stuff, and
I had an older son that has already gone through it.
But you start to look at how the differences have
(06:15):
happened since you were being recruited in school, right, You
start looking at how can we make this player fit
into our program as a whole, because a lot of
times you look at back in the day, it was like,
all right, we need somebody that's gone well, you know,
walk that line, but be on the wrong side of
(06:36):
it every once in a while because he's going to
bring an edge. Well, now these kids have been brought up,
hey be respectful, respect your elders, making sure that you're
handling your business. But you definitely need that edge. And
look at all these sports. You look at Kari Spears,
the one that's been player of the week and continuing.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
To show up and show out. Think she.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Comes from a household of athletes, high level athletes and
Pro bowl yes professionals. And then you look at the
ability that she has shown throughout the process. And that's
the other part of it. She continues to get better
and better every single week. She's not too big, not
too small, but she is in there at that mindset
(07:24):
of I'm going to destroy you and this ball every
time it comes my way.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Sometimes you got to use a little touch, a little finess,
and she'll probably develop into that. But right now, move
because you're gonna get hit in the face like she
can really hit it. And to be a freshman and
to come in with three year starters, people that have
(07:52):
been playing in front of you playing in college and
you just jumped the line.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Means you real good heart.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Well, it also means that they scouted and recruited and
looked at the right player that could come in and
be a fit.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Because I was talking got a chance to talk.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
To Vic Shaffer yesterday and he was talking about the
speed of the game and how important it is for
young players to understand. You got to be able to
move fast, You got to be able to react fast.
But you can't turn the ball over. You can't do
certain things that is going to keep you off the
floor volleyball.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
You got to come in and execute the game plan.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Especially if we're setting you up and you keep failing
on that can't put you out here, you can't trust you.
So for this team to be where they are right
now is something that has has a lot of Texas
fans excited about it.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
I know Jared Elliott who at.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
The press are on Monday, another one of the press availabilities.
He was talking about the togetherness of this team, and
that's what we're hearing about it. This is this is
the thing that we're hearing across college sports, these guys
hanging out together, players being part of each other's family.
(09:09):
Where it's not like, all right, man, i'll see you tomorrow.
I'm gonna go to my crib. You go to your crib.
There's nothing we're doing together. I'll see you in the morning. No,
these people are going to dinner together. They're inviting each
other out, they're hanging out, they're kicking it. I know
you said dinner, My bad. I didn't mean no, it's
for the cowboys. They don't hang out, they don't have Once.
(09:31):
Once Dak lost once, Dak lost not CD when he
lost Zeke. When he lost Zeke, he became his own man.
He's a lone wolf.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
But they were like doing free throw shooting contests and
playing pool together.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
That was at the facility. That was not.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
None of that was happening at the crib. This was
stuff that was happening at the facility. So time will
let you know what it all about. And that's what.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
That's the one thing that we continue to look at
what we're gonna do. We're gonna go to break a
little bit early.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Coach Vick Schaeffer is trying to hop on and he
will join us right after the break. We're just getting
started on a prediction Thursday edition of The Morning Kickoff
right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. He has a career
record of forty five in two oh a and his
(10:33):
record at the University of Texas is one forty four
and thirty six. He's a four time SEC Coach of
the Year, including the twenty twenty five season where his
team finished in the final four and of course they
had a thirty five and four record. He is the
head coach of your Texas Lady Longhorns. He is Coach
(10:55):
Vick Schaeffer. Good morning, coach. How you doing, Hey, good
morning man.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
I appreciate it. I'm I'm rolling We got early workouts
this morning. I'm uh, I'm rolling along. How y'all doing.
We're good, We're good. We're excited to talk to you
and as always. We are huge, huge.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Women's basketball fans, and what you have been able to
build here at the University of Texas is something that
I remember. The very first day you took the job,
I was here at this station. I had a different
co host and we talked about you taking over this job,
and you said, we're gonna guard you from the airport
to the to the baseline. And that's exactly what you
(11:36):
built your team around. You have got one of the
best defensive teams. How do you how do you go
out and search those types of players that aren't afraid
to play defense.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
I think you you've got to find kids that are
all about the team. I think you've got to find
kids that really put a value on it. And I
think you've got to find kids that that want to win,
that are really competitive.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
I mean I say it all the time.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
If somebody describes your team, I don't care what team
it is. It could be Sark's team, mind Schlosses, Shawn's.
But if they say you've got a tough, physical, aggressive team,
you'd like that As a head coach. That doesn't say
anything about your skill set, doesn't say anything about your
jump shot, doesn't say anything about how far your quarterback
(12:26):
can throw a football or how fast your pitcher's thrown
it on the mound.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
But if you if your team was.
Speaker 5 (12:31):
Described as tough, physical, and aggressive, you probably like that.
And in basketball that usually describes a team on the
on the defensive end. And so I think for us,
my staff does a great job. We identify kids that
are ultra competitive, that play really hard.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
I say it all the time.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
I don't want to coach your heart, I want to
coach your mind. And so you got to have kids
that really play the game really hard. And Uh, if
you do that, man, if it can be something a
lot of fun to watch. I think our fan base
has really come to appreciate how hard our kids play.
And again, when you talk about how hard your kids play,
(13:18):
it's usually on that end.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Coach talking about how hard somebody plays.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
There's always a lot of friendly banter between me and
Danny Davis, who I'm sure you get plenty of interviews
with and and the subject is always Rory Harmon because
I'm I'm a big Rory fan. And I asked a
lot of questions to Danny because he gets the media availabilities. Uh,
what what's the what's the the Rory Harmon report?
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Right now? She looks good.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
She's playing with out her brace back again and it's
just really comfortable, and uh, you know.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
She looks good.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
She's always say it's I haven't had that many of
those kinds of injuries, very very few, but it's been
my experience, either with kids that have or even in
recruiting kids that have had them, it's that second year
where they really kind of get back to looking comfortable
and normal.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Although I will say Rory.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
Looked pretty dang comfortable last year and pretty normal.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
I think the thing that.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
You're focused so much on your recovery with your injury,
sometimes it takes away with your ability to train and
get your skill set back.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
And so I.
Speaker 5 (14:38):
Think right now Rory looks really good, both health wise
and with her skill set.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
She's probably the last two weeks she's just.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Been really really good, finding people, finding them at the
right time, delivering the past in the pocket where it
needs to be. She's looked really good good. So the
report on Rory is she looks great. And you know,
going back to that whole the whole question that you
(15:09):
ask about defense, I mean, it helps when you've got
you've got a Rory Harmon who picks up ninety four feet,
who gets you in the press as soon as the
ball goes through the net, who loves to play hard
on that end, who takes great pride in playing on
that end. And we've been really fortunate to have a
(15:29):
player like that here at Texas for now going on
five years.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
We're talking to the head coach of the Texas women's
basketball team, Coach Vick Schaeffer. Guys, he's rolling along trying
to get the practice. But Coach, I wanted to ask
you this because you know, you talk about Rory and
the leadership and what she brings. Obviously, Madison Booker has
been in the program going on her third year now,
and she's had a lot of experience, but you lost
(15:54):
a lot of those types of players that brought an
edge and brought that account ability. As we like to say,
what is the next step for Vick Schaeffer and identifying
those other types of players, because all more than likely
this is Rory's last year and Madison will be a
senior after this.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
Yeah, I think.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
Again, we've got a good you know, we've got a
good young group of kids, and in justice Carlton, Jordan
Lee and Brianna Preston. Those three sophomores, you know, all
had big moments last year.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Uh some played longer than others.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
But you know, you're hopeful that those kids can continue
to develop, which I think they they they have. I
think all three have really had good summers and so
you hope that those kids can step up and you know,
continue then in need the legacy that we've established here
(17:02):
at Texas and developing kids.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
You know, Books going to be a junior.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
She's still got two great years, an incredible talent, unbelievable kid,
humble and hungry every day, and so I think, you know, with.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Those kids, those three.
Speaker 5 (17:23):
Sophomores, and then you know you've got to continue to recruit. Well,
we recruited the number five kid in the country and
Eliah Crump last year didn't really get too many. You know,
we didn't get anyone else in the early period. We
signed Grace Late kid from Ireland, and shoot it, we
took Levis side of the portal six six kid that'll
(17:47):
be a sophomore.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
But we really hope we can regishirt Her.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
If we can get Bray and Kyla to kind of
be that two headed monster that we've always had.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Year in and year out.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
So you know, that's where we're at right now. So
in recruiting, you know, it's it puts a real premium
on this year's class and we're after you know, we're
in the we're in the homes, and we're after some
of the best players in the country right now, and
so you know, it's, uh, it's what you do.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
You know, you reload.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
And I still believe in recruiting young kids trying to
retain them and develop them. I mean, that's always been
the secret to our success both at Mississippi State and here.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
You recruit to a fit, you retain them, and.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
You develop them, and I know, it gets harder and
harder to retain them, and then you can't retain them,
then it's.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
Hard to develop them.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
But and it's really hard when you're taking kids out
of the portal and they only got one year left,
where you know, you're trying to develop someone who's really
you better get what you want because they're pretty much
developed at that point, they're ready to have a senior year.
So it's you know, it's just it's kind of where
(19:07):
we're at, and it puts a real premium I think
on this year's recruiting class.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Coach.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
The scouting report always says what you said earlier, Texas
plays fears tough, competitive. It also says that they're consistent.
They have players that can score at a very consistent rate.
But the knock was, there wasn't a lot of a
lot of three point shooting. How is the development of
(19:34):
the three point shooting?
Speaker 3 (19:37):
What's going on? I think I know about let me
have it? Yeah, let me let me have it. You know,
I love you. Don't hurt me too bad. No, it's
all good. I mean, it's just you know, it's the
topic of conversation.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
And and look, I've had some really good three point
shooting teams. I can remember Blair's senior year at Mississippi State.
We have a drill called Longhorn. It's it's a four
minute scrimmage. You're trying to score as fast as you can.
You're pressing after every bucket and whatever. The shot clock
(20:21):
resets at twenty four on every shot, and so you're
trying to score fast.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
You're not running any offense.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
You're just trying to get the ball down and score
as fast as you can. And I can remember that
team standing there on the sideline just about every day
going wild.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
This must be what it feels like to coach the
Golden State.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Warriors, because my entire, my entire roster could really fill
it up and shoot the three Vivian's Roshnda Johnson, Blair Schaeffer,
Morgan William, Rakia Jackson, later h Chloe Bibbie, my four player.
(21:06):
I mean we they all had the green light anywhere, anytime,
didn't matter, time and place, time and place was open.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
And yeah, coach oh Man, that was so good. Yeah,
I knew he was about to get you. I knew
he was.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
Let's see what we get them consistently.
Speaker 5 (21:38):
And I'm not gonna sit there and be my bang
my head in the wall twenty every night. You guys
in the media are happy because we're shooting twenty threes
and we're getting our butt beat. You know, it just
don't make sense if you can't make a three. Okay,
go to your get to your spot, as we say,
and go make it two. And so you know, last year,
(22:01):
like I said, you win thirty five games, go the
file four And I had to answer that question, you know,
once a week about our three point shooting. And again,
it's not about shots, man, it's about makes.
Speaker 6 (22:16):
You know.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
I tell a kid that all the time.
Speaker 5 (22:18):
It's not about shots, it's about makes and we're all
about making shots.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
And so you know, the.
Speaker 5 (22:28):
For us last year, we just weren't real consistent out there.
I don't know that you know, Booker shot forty percent
out there, But Booker also knows, yeah, that's a good
shot for her, but she knows there's a better one
that she can go hunt too.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
And so for her, she you know, she just she'd rather.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Than coach Will Robster, I mean Shae Holly and and roar.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Man oh man.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Yeah, we're going through the streets, man, we ain't driving
a parking garage.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Yeah, you start to lose it.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Well, we're thankful for the time that we got from
coach Shaeffer. Sorry for the technical difficulties. I'm sure we'll
get him on again. As he continues to make his way,
he might not want to come back on if I'm on, well,
especially if you're gonna ask about three point shooting. I
was thinking to myself, I was like, he's about to
let Mark have it because they went thirty five and
four and made it to the final four.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
I'm not the enemy. I'm just doing the scouting report, sir.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Hey, and the scouting reports say we went to the
final four.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
And was thirty five and four.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
When we come back, we're gonna talk to our guy,
Eric Henry of Horns two four seven as he gets
us closer and closer to next week's matchup against the
Florida Gators. Football is on the bye week, but Eric
Henry is not right here on the morning kickoff on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to
the morning kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen
(24:08):
hundred The Zone. What a great interview from coach Vic
Schaeffer as his team gets ready for the season. As
we continue to talk football, we'll go to our guy,
Eric Henry of Horns two four seven, as only E
Henry can do. You can follow him at Eric c
Henry Underscore on social media.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
E good to see you this morning, brother.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
And there's just so much going on on the forty Acres.
Basketball is getting ready to start. Baseball we got this
weekend as Texas will take on Texas Tech. And you
know who's gonna be in the middle of the action.
Eric Henry because that's what he does. Good morning, my man.
You muted yourself again, bro, appreciate that though. Oh you
(24:59):
got to lout and come back in. Then we'll get you.
We'll get you.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
But yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
So Eric has been doing a lot of work over
at Horns two four seven. If you missed any of
his work, get over there right now because he's got
a couple of stories that we're gonna touch on that
kind of peaked my interest when I saw them on
the on the page. He's been doing a really good
job about Texas and there's a lot going on this
(25:27):
weekend because this will be the thirn not this weekend,
but the following weekend when Texas takes that trip to
Florida and Gainesville. It's gonna be a little bit different
look for this Texas football team. And what I mean
by that different look is.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
It's muted. Take it off, there you go.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
What we were talking about is there's a new different
look for this Texas team as they get ready to
take that trip to Florida. In the SEC I can
hear them, ye, I can hear you. I heard you there. Yeah, yeah,
you're good.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
You're good.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
And one of the biggest things is with the SEC
travel roster. Now, how different is that going to look
for this football team? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (26:17):
Yeah, sorry about the tech technical difficulty mindus have come down.
Speaker 7 (26:20):
To the station people. It is a lot easier, you
know hard.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
It's not a major issue, but it's one to keep
an eye on in disrespect. Right, So for those who
don't know, when you're an SEC play it only travels
seventy four players. Right now, Texas has played an average
sixty two players. They played seventy eight against Sam Houston.
But of course you know many of those walk offs right. However,
the reason I specified is because you're going to get
(26:45):
two players back at running back, right CJ.
Speaker 7 (26:47):
Batxer from Travon Weisner.
Speaker 6 (26:49):
You are looking at possibly getting Emmett Mosley the fifth
for the first time this year, and then of course
a smooth defensive guys Alex January, Kobe Black, you know, Warren.
Speaker 7 (26:59):
Roberson, et cetera, et cetera.
Speaker 6 (27:01):
But specifically with the running back spot, right, you know,
Baxter and Weisner are your one two behind that. You're
assuming that the games old native Jared Gibson will make
his turn his home, his hometown and play against the Gators.
But do you want to break a true freshman such
as James Simon? Right?
Speaker 7 (27:21):
To me, that's where I think. If you look at James.
Speaker 6 (27:24):
Simon at tight end, you have four tight ends to
have played right Jack injuries, Jordan Washington, Spencer Shannon, and
Nick Townsend. Right, Amari Winston has also played. Do you
want to bring that fifth tight end and Amari Winston?
Because in my mind you can. But that would lead
you to know a red shirt out of the question
for these guys, They're going to be part of the factor,
(27:45):
part of the ross going forward. If they don't come,
then you know, all right, more than likely they couldn't
be in ligned for a red shirt.
Speaker 7 (27:52):
So it's not something where it's like, oh.
Speaker 6 (27:54):
Man, you know Ryan Wingo is not going to travel,
but something to keep an eye on.
Speaker 7 (27:57):
For red shirt purposes for these underclasses.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Yeah, that's an interesting take when you bring up the
fact of the red shirt purposes. For those that don't know,
what is the red shirt rule?
Speaker 7 (28:09):
Right, I appreciate you asking that hard.
Speaker 6 (28:10):
So the current red shirt rules, you can play in
four games regular season games and still maintain a redshirt
if you play a fifth regular season game, you'll burn
through your red shirt. Of course, the specification of regular
season means you can play in the SEC title game,
you can play in a bowl game, you can play
in collegetball playoff games.
Speaker 7 (28:28):
Those don't counch towards red shirt.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
Got you, No, that's awesome. E.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
I alluded to this the other day that Texas would
be a better team when they played Florida based off
the fact that they're going to get some guys back,
but also what about the guys that from Florida that
have been out, Like you know, you had DJ Lagway
walking around with a boot on it, and they also
(28:56):
said that one of their tackles had a high ankle.
Do you know the Scouttery report on Florida?
Speaker 7 (29:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (29:05):
First off, you can start a DJ Lagway right, and
it's real interest in Mark. Depending on who you ask,
is that a hindrance or is it a help for Florida?
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Right?
Speaker 6 (29:14):
DJ Lagway through five interceptions against LSU.
Speaker 7 (29:18):
Some people would make the argument that DJ Lagway.
Speaker 6 (29:20):
Has never been healthy entering the season, So is that
a hignorance or a help that.
Speaker 7 (29:26):
They're getting him back?
Speaker 6 (29:27):
He did practice If you take a look, actually, Mark
via Florida social media, they showed him practicing right, so
it looks like he'll be in line to go.
Speaker 7 (29:36):
But the real question.
Speaker 6 (29:37):
Is was he ever one hundred percent to begin the
season for Willis, Texas native. They're also on defense. He
talked about tackle. Yeah, they a defensive tackle who right
now is looking like it's gonna be a game week decision.
They can't afford any injuries on defense. The one thing
that is propping this team up to even be relatively
competitive in games is its defense.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
We're talking to Eric Henry of Horns two four seven.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
You can follow him at Eric c Henry Underscore and
check out all of his work at Horns two four seven.
One of the things that Texas has been dealing with
and it reared its ugly head once again, is something
I've been talking about. You got to be able to
clean up those penalties. So when you look at this
Texas football team over the last couple seasons, it's been
(30:24):
something that's been a struggle now, not just a little bit,
but a lot.
Speaker 7 (30:29):
Yeah hard you know, we talked about the penalties. It's
two things I really think.
Speaker 6 (30:33):
You have to talk about this football team because so
much has been laid at the feet of arch Many
right saying well, can arch manny do this? Can arch
manycise me do that? And you know they getting seen
with Ryan Wingo. Well, let's start with the penalties, right.
They have thirty four committed thirty four pounties this year.
That ranks them one hundred and twenty six out of
one hundred and thirty five SBS teams in the nation,
(30:55):
and penalties committed over three fourths of those.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
Have been committed on offense. I don't care who you are.
Speaker 6 (31:01):
If you're starting at first and fifteen and first at twenty,
you're not the wealth convert You and I and you
and I and Mark talked about this in the pregame show.
Right now, the other thing offensive that any got to
get cleaned up third down and fourth down conversion percentage.
Steve Sarkisan is an adamant I'm going to be aggressive
on fourth down right right now, they're five of twelve
(31:24):
in fourth down conversions. That ranks them one hundred and
sixth in the nation in fourth down text and third
down they're not any better. They are one hundred and
fourteenth in a third down conversion percentage. Right with converting
seventy five percentage. So you say all that to say
you can only lay so much at the feet of
(31:45):
arch May when offensively they have a lot to get
cleaned up.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
Man, you know when you look at it and you
put those numbers next to it, it's no good. Well,
and it's not for a team like the universe versity
of Texas in which they should be at the top
of all of these categories.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
Not even at the top.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
I don't need them to be one or two, But
can we be in the top twenty? Can you be
in the top fifteen? And I think the way that
the game would be played will be a lot different. Right, Cosmetically,
we look at this game and we're like, uh, Texas,
there's just so much going on. But if they were
cleaning this up, it would be a lot better. And
then we have a different outlook on this football team.
Speaker 7 (32:28):
Correct the hards the word you use was correct.
Speaker 6 (32:32):
You said cosmetically, right, because you can take a look
at all of the flashy things quarterback. Why isn't the
deep ball hitting so on and so forth? Right at
the end of the day, mark, you know this hars.
Football's won in the trenches and with the details. Right,
it's those things. Red zone scoring percentage. They're some one
hundred in the nation in red zone scoring percentage as well, Right,
(32:53):
so these are all the things. If Texas is going
to live and die by the big play touchdown, well
then they got to get more big plays, right, But
that's not going to be a sustainable way to win
games in Southeastern Conference.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
Just man, from your mouth to God's ears, let's get
rid of these penalties.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
Eric, I wanted to ask you this too.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
With the bye week and what's going on, one of
the things that coach Sark talked about was this was
a good week for everybody to get out and recruit.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Go see some of those players.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
I know you're not big on the recruiting side, but
you do keep your ear to the street. Derek Cooper
was here last weekend and he's one of the one
of the bell Cows, and he seems to be locked
and loaded to come to the University of Texas.
Speaker 6 (33:41):
Yeah you know again, another Florida. Yeah, I'm ready to
come to the University of Texas. For those who don't know,
Derek Cooper out of South Florida, and he is someone
who's been pretty rock solid in his commitment again. You
all know the wild wild west that is recruiting. There's
a lot of time to build between out and signing Dave.
Even Steve Sarkisian always says, don't talk to me, now,
(34:03):
talk to me, you know, come November, in December, right,
But what I like most about his recruitment, guys, is this,
if Texas and I'll continue to say it, right, if
they can tap into South Florida, which before.
Speaker 7 (34:16):
The season, guys looked a little bit easier.
Speaker 6 (34:19):
Now you got the seven roles as a top fifteen
t you got Miami as a top ten team.
Speaker 7 (34:24):
And you know, I don't have to tell anyone. You
have to be in Florida to know this.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
If the Hurricanes are ranked top ten consistently, they're going
to own South Florida.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Right.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
Well, if they can hang.
Speaker 6 (34:33):
On to Derek Cooper, hang on to some of those
Florida commits they have, it's only going to expand the
recruiting territory, recruiting base in the Southeastern Conference.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Before we let you go, I wanted to ask you, like,
during this type of week, you are working on all
kinds of stories. As I said, basketball is about to start,
Baseball has a little exhibition this weekend. But football is
where everybody wants to know what's going on on.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
What you got working over there at Horns two four seven?
Speaker 6 (35:03):
Yeah again, bye week. You know it's about the details, right.
He gives you a chance to reset. So we're taking
a look at the freshman that has played for games, right,
the ones who say the ones we looking at and say, okay,
they played one more and you know that red shirt
is burned. We're taking a look at that. We're also
trying to take a look at what has been good
from non conference plays.
Speaker 7 (35:23):
It feels like there's been a lot of talk about
with and bad.
Speaker 6 (35:25):
What has been good that you think actually can be
built on for Florida and OU So keep an eye
out for that and our If I can plug one
non football story, last year, I asked all the big
name college basketball coaches John Calum Parody, uh, Danny Hurley,
Down Staley, l Se, Who am I.
Speaker 8 (35:44):
Forgetting right now?
Speaker 7 (35:47):
Kim Molky, thank you?
Speaker 6 (35:48):
Don't you can't have Kim here that because I asked
all them their thoughts on Movie Center as a venue,
right writing a big Movie Center feature, Because that is
when we spoke with Sean Miller, one of the key
pieces for Texas basketball recruiting. Hey, come play in a
premier arena. That's the envy of all the big name
coaches across college basketball.
Speaker 7 (36:08):
Keep it out for that as well.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
I love it because you're gonna help You're gonna help
Texas land some of these recruits. Let's tell everybody about
the Moody. We'll talk about it right here on a
Thursday on the morning kickoff. As always, Man, we appreciate you,
my boy, Ike said the second finest man in Lago Vesta.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
That's what he said.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
I appreciate you, brother, appreciate you. All right, man, we'll
talk to you soon. There he is Eric He of
hors two four seven as he breaks it down coming.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
Up next in VP. In VP. That's right. I think
he sealed it up.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
And you know who I'm talking about right here on
the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
I want you to take a listen to this to
cow Clumba what to buy cow right?
Speaker 9 (37:05):
How number fifty nine only Judge Marris and Babe Ruth
have ever hit more in American League history?
Speaker 3 (37:26):
And how many have had? What up there?
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Well that sounded good and that made him have number
fifty nine, and you're automatically thinking, well, it's unreal to
see that this is a guy that catches every day.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
He's got fifty nine home runs.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
But the magic number that we were always talking about
was sixty.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
If he gets to sixty, what will happen?
Speaker 9 (37:52):
Climb on a right down sixty.
Speaker 10 (38:00):
Catcher has hit sixteen home runs?
Speaker 9 (38:14):
Your MVP movement, Chary.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
I love it. I love it. This is an exciting time.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
And Sarah Langs, who has done unbelievable work throughout her time.
She's been dealing with Luke Garrick's disease, but she is
sharp as a tack and she put up Cayl Riley
now has eleven multi homer home run games in this season.
That ties the most for a single season record. That
(38:45):
ties in with Aaron Judge who did it in twenty
twenty two, Sammy Sosa who did it in nineteen ninety eight,
and Hank Greenberg in nineteen thirty eight. But you know
the beautiful thing about it all, what's that he's a
switch hitter and he's done it. It's the first one correct.
(39:05):
Unbelievable what we have been able to witness from a
guy that has to manage a pitching staff, know each pitch, no,
each pitcher, also defensively understanding how to pitch each guy.
And then oh yeah, I'm just gonna hit some balls
in the upper tank.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
I love it. Cal Riley is my MVP. He's the
People's champion.
Speaker 1 (39:28):
But coming up next, we're gonna talk to lifetime Longhorn
Dylan for Telly as he talks all things Ryder Cup.
You know it starts right now on the Morning Kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to a prediction Thursday edition of The Morning Kickoff right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. In
(39:50):
our number one, we got an opportunity to talk to
Texas women's basketball coach Vick Schaeffer, who took his team
to the Final four last year, thirty five and four
basketball team and was able to get it done. We
also got an opportunity to talk to Eric Henry of
(40:12):
Horns two four seven as he broke down what Texas
needs to do to get better because this Texas basketball,
I mean football team has to be better at its penalties,
its discipline, and everything else that goes along with it,
because those rankings mark that was kind of a sickening
(40:34):
one hundred sixteenth and some of them out of one
hundred and thirty three teams. That's not good. That's not
good at all. But they have the ability to fix it.
So let's see what these next three four weeks will
look like. So we're gonna try to figure out what's
happening with that, and then we're also looking at what's
(40:54):
happening across the college football and NFL football.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
But right now we're gonna talk Ryder Cup as.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
It is important to understand that this former Texas Longhorn participant,
he is a professional golfer. He also does pick a ball.
He's one heck of an athlete. Because we've had conversations
about this before. He is Dylan for Tilly, as he
joins us right now on the morning kickoff on sports
(41:22):
Radio AM thirteen hundred, the song good morning Dylan, Hey
Dylan you there.
Speaker 8 (41:34):
I'm here, but I don't seem to be on the
right audio. Have you got me?
Speaker 3 (41:37):
Yeah? We got you? So don't worry about it.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
We're gonna keep you on the phone right now because
we got you on the phone. So I wanted to
introduce you and let people know that you are a longhorn.
But everybody talks about golf and I'm gonna get into
the Ryder Cup, but I want you to tell everybody
about your pick a ball escapades, because the last time
I got a chance to hang out with you, you
were really into this pick a ball.
Speaker 8 (42:00):
I am, I still am. I'm getting old and I
might and I'm realizing I need to take it easy
on the pickaball because my golf career is actually more important.
But people little injuries pumping up to a little bit
of extra pickaball action.
Speaker 11 (42:12):
But I love it. It's a great sport.
Speaker 8 (42:13):
And get out on the court, meet some other people
and stay active and work on different planes, jumping and
moving golfers to sober and you do the same thing
over and over again, and my buddy needs a little
bit of extra stimulus. So that's what I love about pickleball.
Speaker 1 (42:27):
Well, the funny thing is, you know you said it perfectly.
You're like, I love pickleball, but the golf is the
most important part of this for me to be able
to play pickleball, So you want to make sure that
you stay sharp on the golf course. And speaking of
the golf course, it's a big weekend for both the
European team and of course the USA team as the
(42:47):
Ryder Cup kicks off tomorrow, and the competition between the
two groups is obviously going to be top conversation. But
when you look at these players and you've got an
opportunity to play against all of these guys, it is
an interesting and eclectic group of participants this year for
(43:08):
both sides.
Speaker 8 (43:10):
Yeah, it's always interesting when you have picks involved. I
would rather have a team that has maybe ten guys
make the team straight up and have two picks. But yeah,
I think both teams went for their old, tried and
tested guys that have played a lot of President's Cup
Ryder Cups, and you never know how that's going to
work out. You always want the best team, the guys
playing the best in the moment. But I think both
(43:31):
teams have left out one or two guys who might
be in better form. So I think you should be
looking at the pairings going a little narrow.
Speaker 11 (43:40):
I'll say like maybe eight or nine guys will play most.
Speaker 8 (43:42):
Of the matches on the first two day, and then
on Sunday you obviously have twelve matches where everyone has
to play, so there's no hiding there. You've got one
point on each match and you've got to try and
find a way to get those points.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
How do you decide on who goes first or who
goes against who.
Speaker 8 (44:00):
There's a whole lot of psychology in that, and I
think most teams now they lean on the statistics rather
they try and look at, Okay, what pairings are our strongest.
We're going to put out our strongest pairings early on
Friday to try and get some points on the board
and build some confidence, get the crowd behind us.
Speaker 11 (44:17):
But there's many ways to do it.
Speaker 8 (44:18):
Some guys like to hold the better players for the back.
Some like to put likes for like players together. Guys
that hit long drives they put them together. All they go, well,
we deciphered the golf course. We need to drive off
number twelve really well. But then on seven, nine and
eleven we need someone that puts really well. So there's
all these different series and you just got to back
yourself up and hope that the guys can respond on
(44:40):
the course.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
So, Dylan, I wanted to ask you this because, by
the way, make sure y'all get over and follow him
on his golf channel on YouTube, and it's Dylan Fertilly Golf.
He has got all kinds of different things that he's
doing on there. These are some what do you call them,
some short clips, some long clips and hours so have
variations of the show. So make sure you follow that
(45:03):
and I'll make sure to plug it by the end
of this.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
Is there anything that teaches you how to keep it
from going in the woods.
Speaker 8 (45:12):
We're getting to that instructional stuff coming up. Most of
it's about my travels in Europe. Now I'm playing the
deep world too, so South Africa, Europe, Asia. I got
cool little behind the scene things while I'm on to it.
Speaker 11 (45:24):
But we'll get you.
Speaker 8 (45:25):
We might even have you on an episode.
Speaker 3 (45:27):
Mark.
Speaker 8 (45:27):
We can do a full deep dive and fix your
golf game if you want, Man.
Speaker 3 (45:30):
Come on, man hard you want to do it, I'm
definitely in chance. You don't get a chance to hang
out with a pro.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
Yeah, speaking of that, Dylan, I want you to tell
Mark about your time with the Undertaker, his good friend.
Speaker 11 (45:49):
Oh man, you guys might like this.
Speaker 8 (45:51):
I'm not known for my comedy, but I went to
NASCAR at Cota, so we got Nascar in a cinema.
Speaker 11 (45:58):
This is the first time I've done. This is great
and lucky.
Speaker 8 (46:01):
I was in one of the sweets, had a good
experience and I walked into the restroom and who's this.
Speaker 11 (46:05):
I know this guy.
Speaker 8 (46:06):
Oh my gosh, that's the Undertaker, six foot seven, six
foot eight. I'm a skinny South African guy, but I
grew up watching him. You as well, I grew up
watching you guys. I'm like, this is amazing. I'm starstruck.
I don't know what to do, but I'm like, I
need to say something. So he was busy washing his
hands after he's in this from the restroom and I'm like,
hey man, big big fan. You're huge in South Africa.
(46:27):
Like I love you, man, And I was like, I
don't know what's going to happen. The guy gonna beat
me up in the bathroom. I'm like, I'm scared. I mean,
Mark Calloway, the Undertaker, honestly then, nicest man I've ever met.
Speaker 11 (46:39):
He turned around and he was like, Hey, it's nice
to meet your son.
Speaker 8 (46:41):
Where are you from we got we chat it for
like half an hour probably he went back into the suite.
And if you want to know this Mark, the crazy
thing is he learnt his wrestling in South Africa his
first two three years. He said, I went to South
Africa and those guys took me under their wing and
they taught me how to wrestle and how to you know,
all the stage cross done. And I was blown away
(47:02):
with how my smock is.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
Some of my some of my greatest memories are actually
South wrestaurant.
Speaker 3 (47:07):
I'm very good friends with PJ.
Speaker 2 (47:09):
Black, who his father ran the wrestling probably where Undertaker
cut his teeth, and I just loved it down there.
I always always had great experience. I told my wife
that we we have to go to South Africa at
some point.
Speaker 11 (47:25):
Yeah, you should. I love it.
Speaker 8 (47:26):
It's a great country vacation, Safari, all that stuff.
Speaker 11 (47:30):
I'm telebon at least once in a.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
Big fan of the Safaris said, Safari. That kind of
cuts us out from three hours.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
Three hours. I ain't even worried about the three hours.
I'm worried about the three animals. That's what I'm worried.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
There are certain animals that are familiar with the cars
and they'll.
Speaker 3 (47:55):
Jump up on the hood. I don't need that and
just go for a ride. I don't need an ornament.
I'm not exagerating. I'm not I'm not getting an ornament
on top of the ornament. You know what I'm saying.
He don't need to be up there. Hey, a little
p came out. I'm not gonna lie, So, Dylan, I
(48:15):
wanted to ask you to.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
I mean, you know, looking at the landscape of golf,
and I think you and I have talked about this
because the last time we were together, I think it
was when Live was just now starting, and now all
of this stuff is kind of kind of calmed down
a little bit. I don't think there's so much animosity
because they seem to be working together. You're still grabbing
guys that are part of Live to be a part
(48:37):
of the Ryder Cup on both sides. But it needed
to happen because it changed the way certain things were
being done in golf. And now it seems like everybody's
back on the same playing.
Speaker 11 (48:49):
Field they suddenly are.
Speaker 8 (48:52):
There's still just some animosity between the guys that left
the establishment, the PGA to GP will to and the.
Speaker 11 (49:00):
Guys that are trying to now come back.
Speaker 8 (49:02):
So PJ two players have lost money because they see
it as losing money.
Speaker 11 (49:07):
They've had these big.
Speaker 8 (49:08):
Contracts come their way and they said, now I'm gonna
stick with the PJA two.
Speaker 11 (49:10):
I'm not going to go to live and they're almost
we're not.
Speaker 8 (49:14):
Back together yet, we're not in unison, We're not gonna
walk stride AND's tried because I lost out on money.
Speaker 11 (49:20):
You made a bunch of money.
Speaker 8 (49:21):
So and it's just still back and forth stuff whereby
there's a separateur on list at the turn the PGA tour.
But now you're seeing a lot home mingling with the
Rider Cup this week, with some other majors and things
where guys the player has always got along. It's most
of the administrators that the agent. So you know, all
these guys that get in then start playing politics. So
that's still going on in the behind the scenes. But
(49:42):
maybe in a year or two you can have a
conversation with everybody all together again.
Speaker 1 (49:47):
Can we all just get along? But let me borrow
some money. I do want to get I do want
to get your thoughts on the Ryder Cup as it
all starts to play out, who do you see winning
the Ryder Cup.
Speaker 11 (50:03):
It's a tough one.
Speaker 8 (50:04):
I think this is one of our most even Ryder Cups.
Speaker 11 (50:08):
I'm playing on the.
Speaker 8 (50:08):
Deep world to so I see a lot of those
players in and out each week. If I had to
lean towards my guts pulling me to Europe, to be honest,
but you get the New York crowd involved, and if
some of those guys start getting shaky knees and worried
about the guy behind them saying some stuff, I think
the US could pull it through. But I think Sunday
Singles basically look at the Sunday Singles score and that's
(50:31):
going to decide you will now.
Speaker 1 (50:32):
And the funny thing about it is a lot of
people were talking about those prices in New York and
the beer prices there. There might not be that many
people that are in taking the beverages because they.
Speaker 3 (50:42):
Are way out there in the prices.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
But what was the estimate, like, I mean, give me
an idea of what is expensive, oh beer?
Speaker 1 (50:51):
It was that beer was twelve dollars or sixteen dollars
for one for one. Yeah, yeah, it's it's pretty steep
right now. And don't you know.
Speaker 11 (51:00):
Something yesterday though, Mike free food.
Speaker 8 (51:02):
I saw burgers and savages and snacks and stuff.
Speaker 11 (51:05):
So Mark, it seems like you would get your money
back there.
Speaker 2 (51:08):
That's because they want you thirsty, that's true, and they
probably put a lot of salt.
Speaker 3 (51:14):
On that food.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
Yeah, So tell everybody where to find you and what
you got coming up next.
Speaker 8 (51:21):
Yeah, So Dylan for Tilly Golf, as you mentioned as
my YouTube channel, traveling the world, playing the.
Speaker 11 (51:25):
Deep world too. I go back to South Africa pretty.
Speaker 8 (51:27):
Often, so just trying to expand that part of my
media brand and get people behind the scenes. Not many
golf to show you what happens behind the scenes, So
I'm trying to show everybody what the tour life is like.
Get you out there. I'm on Instagram as well, not
too active, but live in Austin, Texas to Hannisburg, South Africa.
Speaker 11 (51:44):
So if you guys have a.
Speaker 8 (51:45):
Senior want to come to a tournament, hit me up
on Instagram and always happy to interact with my fans.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
Well, you make sure that when you get back, you
get me a Mark out there for your YouTube and oh,
we're going to do it. Mark keeps telling me how
far he can hit it.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
I can hit it far and straight, but I can't
put and I can't bitch.
Speaker 3 (52:05):
If I get in the ref or in the woods,
might as well drop.
Speaker 11 (52:08):
It, all right, you can get you on the straight
and narrow.
Speaker 3 (52:14):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 1 (52:16):
And then we'll go see our guy over at golf
Finnity and talk to him too, so we'll have a
good time no matter what. I appreciate you, Dylan, thanks
for getting up with us, and we'll.
Speaker 3 (52:25):
Have you on the life and catch up.
Speaker 11 (52:30):
Having me.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
All right, I appreciate you. There.
Speaker 1 (52:32):
He is Dylan for Tilly. He is hilarious, he's a
great he's a great athlete. We've had some real conversations
about some of the things he was doing in South Africa.
Speaker 3 (52:43):
He's he's a guy. He's a guy. Oh man, Yeah,
I like him a lot.
Speaker 1 (52:49):
When we come back, we're gonna give out our predictions.
Last week was not good, but for years it was
for entertainment purposes. Right here on the morning kickoff on
sports Radio A thirteen hundred the Zone. Great stuff by
our guy, Dylan Fertility. He is hilarious, he's a heck
of an athlete. Can't wait to kick it with his
storytelling too. Yeah, he has a lot of fun, so
(53:12):
he's a good one to be with. Today's show was
kind of crazy. We've been all over the place, but
it's been fun. It's a bye week, so let's have
a little bit of fun. But one thing that is
not on a buy is our picks. Mine probably should
be because I went oh and six last week. That's right,
your boy didn't have a good week at all. We
(53:32):
also had our guy Mark Henry went three and three,
but Marcus is on the comeback at four and two.
So for the season, I'm seven and eleven, Marcus six
and twelve, and Marcus is at five hundred. So Marcus,
you get the tea box, my friend. You get to
give us your first NFL game.
Speaker 4 (53:54):
I'm starting off with Packers minus seven versus the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (53:59):
You just went right at it. You're gonna just just
add salt to the wound.
Speaker 4 (54:04):
Hey, I gotta I gotta add to my miseries sports
misery somehow.
Speaker 1 (54:09):
So the Cowboys are a seven point dog at home,
So that just goes to tell you Michael Parsons coming
in there to act a fool until Marcus is taking
them the Packers at this one, Mark.
Speaker 2 (54:24):
I'm going Ravens and Chiefs, and I'm going with the Ravens.
Chiefs will be two, will be one and three. Wow,
that's amazing.
Speaker 1 (54:34):
I myself am going with the La Rams minus three
and a half. I just there's something about this Rams
football team that I really enjoy watching. So I'm taking
the Rams at minus three. My second NFL pick will
be the Atlanta Falcons.
Speaker 3 (54:54):
Can we please get the ball to bejon minus one
and a half.
Speaker 1 (54:59):
And I think that they understand the deally here, so
I'm taking Atlanta minus one and a half.
Speaker 2 (55:06):
I'm going Texans and Titans. I'm going with the Texans.
The battle of the oh and three teams. Who's gonna
flinch first?
Speaker 3 (55:17):
You rolling with the Texans, I'm rolling with the Texans.
I like it, Marcus.
Speaker 4 (55:21):
I'm going Bears plus one and a half versus the.
Speaker 3 (55:24):
Raiders the Raders.
Speaker 1 (55:28):
Yeah, this is going to be an interesting matchup as well.
Mark Henry, your third and final pick for the nf
of L.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
I'm going Buccaneers and Eagles, both undefeated three and oh.
Speaker 3 (55:42):
Baker Mayfield. Let's go with the Bucks. I think they're
gonna do it. I like it.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
I like it, Marcus I'm going opposite earlier pick by Mark,
and I'm going Chiefs over Ravens two and a half.
Speaker 3 (55:55):
He's taking the Chiefs. Not going down, my friend, not
going down so fast. My final pick in the NFL
is an early one. That's right. Don't forget fucks.
Speaker 1 (56:05):
Set your lineups for today because we got NFL action today,
but we also have NFL action Sunday morning, so you
better make sure that you get up early. As the
Steelers go across the pond, and I'm taking the Steelers
at minus one and a half. So to wrap up
the NFL, I took the Rams minus three, Atlanta minus
(56:27):
one and a half, and the Steelers also minus one
and a half. Mark Henry took the Ravens minus two
and a half, the Bucks minus three and a half,
and the Texans minus seven and a half, Marcus plus
two and a half, Chiefs Packers minus seven, and the
Bears plus one and a half.
Speaker 3 (56:46):
We're going on.
Speaker 2 (56:47):
We're going off to remind you that this is entertainment
purposes on you. If you lose all your money, do
not come suing me because you said that.
Speaker 3 (56:57):
It was a lock. There were no locks being put
up here.
Speaker 1 (57:00):
This is entertainment purposes only, and that is the NFL.
And if you're wondering where these lines are coming from,
they're coming from Draft Kings gambling problem called one eight
hundred gamblers. Coming up, we got college football and I
will kick it off with the college game. I am
taking the Washington Huskies. They are getting ready to take
(57:22):
on Ohio State. I don't think people are paying attention
to the Huskies.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
I'm taking the Huskies plus eight.
Speaker 2 (57:30):
Mark, I'm gonna go. I mean, I'm gonna go. Oregon
and Penn State. Yep, both of them are undefeated. I
think that Penn State is even though they ring number three,
they're going down.
Speaker 3 (57:47):
Oregon is a prolifical offense.
Speaker 1 (57:50):
Yeah, plus three and a half. He is taking Oregon
plus three and a half.
Speaker 4 (57:55):
Marcus Notre Dame minus four and a half to Arkansas.
Speaker 1 (57:59):
That's a good pick right there, Marcus, but Notre Dame
better figure it out, and they better figure it out quick.
Speaker 3 (58:05):
Because that is going to be a big time matchup.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
Mark Henry another undefeated group number four LSU versus number
thirteen Old Miss.
Speaker 3 (58:16):
I looked for.
Speaker 1 (58:17):
LSU to keep rolling, staying at the top minus one
and a half. Mark Marcus, I think you have the
exact same pick, Chris, I do.
Speaker 4 (58:26):
I am taking LSU minus on one and a half
to Old Miss as well, so we matched something.
Speaker 3 (58:31):
I see that.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
I see that I am going to take Auburn plus
six and a half against the Aggies. I was leaning
Aggie's for a long time, but then I was like,
you know what time.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
To make a move. So I'm rolling with.
Speaker 1 (58:45):
Auburn plus six and a half. Marcus, close us out
Rice plus fourteen and a half versus Navy. I need
those points. Yeah, you always have to take it back
to h Town. I know how you get down.
Speaker 3 (58:57):
Mark.
Speaker 2 (58:58):
I was gonna go Alabama Georgia, but I changed my mind.
I'm gonna go Ohio State in Washington.
Speaker 1 (59:07):
You didn't change everything because a minute ago was Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (59:12):
You had Mississippi State.
Speaker 2 (59:13):
I did, yeah, like what had happened? See what had happened.
I just think these games are more interesting and a
lot of people will under estimate Washington. Washington is three
and oh they have a really really explosive running game.
That running back is really good. He'll get drafted this year,
that's how good he is. And I think this is
(59:35):
the week that Ohio State dips. They weren't super convincing
to me last week. So I'm going to Washington.
Speaker 1 (59:43):
You know that I picked Washington. Yeah, I picked them first.
Well you could pick them, you got them. I just
gotta I gotta change what we can go back to.
I'll go back to Mississippi State too late, already changed it.
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
You done?
Speaker 1 (01:00:01):
And my final pick, You're done. Final pick of the day.
I am picking Syracuse. There's just something about Fran Brown
that keeps me engaged with what Syracuse is doing. So
I am rolling with QS this week and they are
plus five and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:00:21):
That's plus five and a half for Syracuse.
Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
To wrap it up, I took Washington plus eight and
a half.
Speaker 3 (01:00:27):
I took Auburn plus.
Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
Six and a half, and I put Syracuse plus five
and a half. Mark went with Oregon plus three and
a half, LSU minus one and a half, Washington plus
eight and a half. And then he does, why Notre
Dame Because we went through this before the show. Notre
Dame went minus four and a half, LSU minus one
(01:00:49):
and a half and Rice plus fourteen and a half
for our guy Marcus. And remember folks entertainment purposes Coming
up next, We've got the world's Strongest Man with his
world's Strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:01:01):
It might have changed from the wind.
Speaker 1 (01:01:02):
The show started here in the morning kickoff of sports.
Speaker 3 (01:01:06):
Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 11 (01:01:08):
The z All.
Speaker 3 (01:01:10):
You heard him. That's what he do.
Speaker 1 (01:01:12):
W W e Hall of Famer and recognized as the
world's strongest man. He is deep Mark Henry and he
will be bringing you his World's Strongest tape.
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
Take it away, big fella, Hard, what's up man? You
know what time it is?
Speaker 1 (01:01:27):
The timeis fIF time for the World's Strongest Take by
the world's Strongest Man.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
My guys, back then they didn't know me, but now
I'm hot.
Speaker 3 (01:01:41):
They are all on men.
Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
Guys today, I have to tell you. You know, I'm
a bit of a sightist. I like I like I like.
I like big things hard, I like big people. And
(01:02:04):
this week the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went out and signed
the biggest guy in the history of the NFL. They
went out and signed our guy, Desmond.
Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Watson, not to be confused with Randy Watson. The boy's
good though he was sick.
Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
He was four hundred and sixty four pounds and he
was he was giving his walking papers they were like,
you know, we wanted you to, we want you to
lose a little weight, you know, but he just couldn't
do it. But since he got released, he's dropped twenty
(01:02:49):
pounds and now down in the four forties. The Tampa
Bay Buccaneers picked him up.
Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
Ironic that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:03):
The Bucks are playing the Eagles and they have this
thing called the tush push and which they just get
down in the scrum and they just root everybody out.
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
Well, Todd Bowles is like, hey, I got something for you.
Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
I hope y'all been squatting, because now he picks up
a defensive tackle that's four hundred and forty four pounds
and that's an Angel number four four, and it's you know,
we could we could do more with it, but I'm
not gonna do.
Speaker 11 (01:03:39):
That, thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
It's gonna be hard to root this guy out of that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:44):
If he gets down.
Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
On a four point stance and just fires off with
all that weight, you're not gonna push him backwards hard.
If if that is the reason that you are able to,
if the Bucks are able to say this is the solution,
every team in the NFL that is going to go
get a guy fo one hundred and fifty pounds. That
(01:04:08):
can just all his job is is when they line
up in that tush push formation, I need you to
go forward and never go backwards.
Speaker 3 (01:04:19):
What say you?
Speaker 1 (01:04:21):
I mean he hadn't played, so I don't understand how
low he's going to be able to go anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
Well, Ty Bowles said that he had great workouts. He
didn't say good. Okay, he said he had great workouts.
He looked good. And if it makes you right, if
Ty Bowles is right, he's gonna set the standard. Why
(01:04:51):
is Ty Bowles not considered one of the better coaches
in the NFL?
Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
With him, he hadn't been good. I mean that's why.
I mean, he's had opportunities. He's I like him in
Tampa Bay, but all of his previous stops were not
very good.
Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
So that's why that's one of.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
The previous But right now, like with Tampa Bay, he's
been pretty damn good.
Speaker 1 (01:05:17):
They've been they've been something to do with that exactly.
But he's the coach, so he played. That's right, that's right.
I'm just curious to to your point. Yes, I understand
they're playing they're playing Philly this week. What happens after that?
(01:05:38):
What happens to this young man. Is he a mercenary
deal because you had him in camp. You didn't even
let him work out. All you did was have him
walk around the facility. That was his workout for them.
He didn't. He never suited out for them. Is he
somebody that you're bringing in specifically for this game?
Speaker 3 (01:05:58):
And then you say, appreciate what you did, man, but
we have no use for you.
Speaker 2 (01:06:03):
Well, I mean a lot of it harder. I feel like,
is he didn't lose weight?
Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
He was He was four hundred and sixty when you
drafted him.
Speaker 3 (01:06:13):
He was that big when but he was not working.
Speaker 2 (01:06:15):
You're gonna give somebody with an eating problem more.
Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
Money, and what is he going to do? He went?
Speaker 1 (01:06:21):
He didn't he needed to counsel. You drafted him. He
was that big when you drafted him. So what did
you think was going to happen?
Speaker 2 (01:06:33):
I think they thought what would happened when Zion Williamson
was going to happen? That he was going to get motivated, Okay,
and then you go down to four hundred and forty.
Speaker 1 (01:06:42):
You brought up Zion. Let's let's let's let's call Zion
what it is. Zion's in a contract here. When you're
in a contract year.
Speaker 3 (01:06:49):
What you do.
Speaker 1 (01:06:50):
You get yourself in shape and you go do it
and you go get yourself ready to play.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
This dude is trying to get a contract.
Speaker 1 (01:06:57):
And you brought him in knowing when he was at
Florida how much he weighed.
Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
There was nobody else did it.
Speaker 1 (01:07:06):
If you did not believe that this guy was going
to be a helpful part of your team, why did
you bring him in?
Speaker 3 (01:07:13):
And then you waved him?
Speaker 1 (01:07:14):
So, if you're trying to help him, why'd you wave.
Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
Him Because he wasn't doing what they asked.
Speaker 1 (01:07:20):
You keep him and you keep them around your team
to get that done.
Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
You got trainers for that. He was walking with the
trainers here.
Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
Yeah, I would have had somebody with him twenty four
hours a day. Man, listen, until you could do this
on your own. Were putting the training wheels on you.
So okay, So what'd you say?
Speaker 1 (01:07:39):
He lost twenty pounds, thirty pounds, So he must he
believed in the program. He kept walking, And maybe that
was Todd Bow's message to him. If you get to
this way, I'm gonna sign you. I'm gonna bring you
back in it. Just so happened to be against Philadelphia
this week.
Speaker 3 (01:07:54):
Hey, little genius moved by Todd Buller.
Speaker 1 (01:08:00):
If it works, it works, it work here and apologize
to you on Monday morning and tell you Mark is
a genius.
Speaker 3 (01:08:08):
If it works, yes, two things are gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
Washington is gonna feel motivated to do more and to
be better that we hope that's what the first reason is,
but we know it's not just about winning games and
stop of the damn toush push. Secondly, Tybo is gonna
look like a genius and to his peers it's gonna
(01:08:34):
give all of them to Well, it worked for Todd.
We need to go find us a four hundred and
thirty guy that could just root everybody.
Speaker 3 (01:08:45):
He's gonna be available. He's gonna be like you said,
he's gonna be like your fantasy team. You're gonna change.
Speaker 1 (01:08:51):
Defensive teams each week when they play the Cowboys, gonna
go get the office.
Speaker 2 (01:08:56):
Everybody that's playing the Cowboys. That's what I'm gonna wanna get.
So with that being said, that's what's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (01:09:03):
They gonna release Desmond Wise aggravated, and somebody else gonna
pick him up. The next week because they play Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (01:09:11):
He gonna be the mercy. That's gonna be exactly. He
is going to be the touch push stop pull.
Speaker 1 (01:09:19):
We couldn't stop the touch push, but we got one
man that can.
Speaker 3 (01:09:23):
That'smnton can. No dog, ain't nobody doing that.
Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
Uh, that's my man, Mark Henry with his world's strongest take.
When we come back, we'll close out the show and
send you to damn Patrick.
Speaker 3 (01:09:37):
But we got Thursday night football.
Speaker 1 (01:09:39):
Oh yeah, and it's a big one right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred the Zone.
What that great, great show we had today on the
morning kickoff. Make sure you get over to the podcast
page after the show.
Speaker 3 (01:09:54):
Marcus will have that up for you.
Speaker 1 (01:09:56):
I want to give a special thanks to Vic Schaeffer
for a kick us off this morning, our guy Eric
Henry of Horns two four seven, And of course we
had Dylan for Tilly, who is a professional golfer giving
us the update on the Ryder Cup and who.
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
He believes is going to be the winner.
Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
We each believe that the winner of the MVP should
be cal Riley as he continues to make things happen
at the plate and behind the plate. Tomorrow's show is
going to be a fun one. We have our guy
Sean Hardman of Ball Hard. He will be coming on
talking to a clinic that he has for basketball. Basketball
(01:10:39):
season is right around the corner. We'll also have coach
Slasnegel will be joining us at eight seventeen. As Texas
Baseball will be at the at the Dale Diamond this
weekend at one pm taking on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
That's right, folks, it's a bye week for some Tech
(01:11:00):
Baseball will be active tomorrow. You don't want to miss
our interview with coach Slasnagel. We'll also have a conversation
about Micah Parsons and his return to Dallas with our
guy Tommy Yarsh of Dallascowboys dot Com. The Cowboys are
in trouble, let's not get it twisted. It is what
it is and everybody understands that. Uh So it will
(01:11:24):
be an interesting conversation as well. But tonight we've got
NFL football man and obviously we talked yesterday about Jackson
Dark and what's going on with him.
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
Is Russell Wilson done? I don't believe.
Speaker 8 (01:11:38):
So.
Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
I still think there's something out there for him. And
if I am the the if I am the New
Orleans Saints, I make a call. I make a call
to see what we can get. It could be a
seventh round pick, I don't care, but you can. You
need to go get a quarterback because Alvin Kamara has
got too much ability, Chris Olave has too much ability
(01:12:03):
as well, and Spencer Rally is not getting it done.
Speaker 3 (01:12:07):
You passed on getting your door.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
You've done so many different things that has not helped
your organization, especially for Kellen Moore, first time head coach.
You need a quarterback and you don't have one. So
we'll see what happens there. But tonight this is the
game that I've been wanting to see because of the
fact that both of these teams have a lot of expectations.
(01:12:30):
They're both sitting at two and one. The Seattle Seahawks
led by Sam Darnold going up against the Arizona Cardinals
with Kyler Murray. This is a big time opportunity because
it not only is it a big game for the matchup,
but it's the NFC West and that NFC West is
(01:12:50):
a tight, tight league, and I believe tonight that the
Arizona Cardinals. If they're ever going to take a step
to what people think that they could be a surprise team,
this is the night that this happens.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
Man, I'm I'm a fan.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
My buddy's son plays for him. I'm looking forward to
seeing him get more reps now that he's one hundred
percent injury injury free. The Cardinals are a dark horse team,
and I really do think hard that, you know, with
the running game that they have even though Connor is
(01:13:28):
out for the season out and yeah he's out, but
like they still have a real promising and dominant run game.
So I don't think it's going to be you know,
your goal line, Russian is gonna suffer, but in the
middle of the field, they're gonna still be fine.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
Yeah, Jay Jones is gonna miss the game with the congussion.
He is going to be out, so he won't be
playing in this ball game. But Tray Benson is the
running back that has taken over. He went twenty one
carries for one hundred and twenty five yard. He'll be
taking over for Connor James Connor. But this is a
big time matchup because of Kyler Murray. This is prime
(01:14:09):
time for Kyler Murray. They're sitting at two and one,
Seattle two and one in the LA Rams two and one,
with the only undefeated team being the San Francisco forty
nine ers. I'm impressed with the way that Arizona has
been playing. The problem for Arizona is will Marvin Harrison
Junior get better this week. He's had a tough start
(01:14:29):
to the NFL season. I think a lot of drops.
I think the mon Stars came down and switched all
the He took his catching ability and gave it to
Quinton Johnston. Because Quinn Johnson had the drops last year
and now he's making all the plays and Marvin Harrison
hasn't been catching the football.
Speaker 3 (01:14:49):
So Kyler might have to do some adjustment there.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
Hey, run the ball, I mean he ran one play
was like eighty yards of scrambling and running out of bed.
Speaker 1 (01:15:00):
Yeah, but it was only a twenty yard game. Yeah, yeh.
Will Johnson, the corner from Michigan, has been unbelievable for Arizona.
Speaker 3 (01:15:12):
He's been locking people down.
Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
But Sam Donald, as I said, Sam Donald's been a
bright spot. I didn't know if he was going to
be able to carry it over from what he did
last year with the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 3 (01:15:26):
But now he's leading this team.
Speaker 1 (01:15:28):
Zach Charbonnet running back with that one two punch with
Kenneth Walker. You look at Jackson Smith and Jigba what
he's been able to do with this team. So it's
it's going to be an exciting, exciting football game tonight.
Let me look and see what the over under is
in this ball game.
Speaker 3 (01:15:49):
Forty three points over all day every day. I'm gone.
Speaker 1 (01:15:56):
Matter of fact, let men call him my ken Folk.
See if we could throw a little on this thing
to know. Wait, yeah, I believe that this is going
to be an over in this game. Both of them
are coming in from short weeks, but both quarterbacks are
playing at a really high level right now.
Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
Yeah, I think this is gonna be definitely. I like
what he said, You're gonna he's going down, Tonoy. It
will be happening to Annoy. And don't forget too.
Speaker 11 (01:16:26):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:16:26):
Seattle has that punt returner and wide receiver Tony Horton.
Speaker 3 (01:16:30):
He Tory Hunter Horton. Excuse me.
Speaker 1 (01:16:33):
He's been exciting to watch because every time he touches
the ball he might be able to take it to
that put him in a slot, but they got Injigba
and they got Cooper Cup. Don't forget about forget It's
gonna be an interesting night tonight. I want to thank
Vic Shaeffer, I want to thank uh Eric Henry of
Horns two four seven, and of course I want to
(01:16:54):
thank Dylan for Tilly. I want to thank Mark Henry
and of course Marcus. Make sure you tune in tomorrow
as it'll be.
Speaker 3 (01:17:00):
A feel good free for all football Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
But we'll also be talking a little bit of basketball
as that.
Speaker 3 (01:17:08):
Is right around the corner.
Speaker 1 (01:17:11):
Just remember this, folks, don't believe everything you see, because
even salt looks like sugar will be better tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:17:17):
Peace,
