Marcus behind the boards. And if you want to be
a part of the show, all you gotta do is
text to word texas followed by your message to eight
one five three zero. Standard data in message rates may apply.
That's the word texas follow by your message to eight
(01:44):
one five three zero.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Standard data in message rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Also, if you want to get a chance to win
a pair of tickets to go see Koheve and Cambria,
that's all you gotta do is leave a voice mail
by using that new and improved talkback feature on the
always free iHeartRadio app. All you got to do is
do that get a chance to win, and I promise
you it is definitely worth it. I want to get
(02:10):
into a conversation right now, Mark, because the NFL continues
to be part of the action. In NFL Never Sleeps
and one of the most popular shows that I watched
on Netflix. Was the original show Quarterback Quarterback was outstanding
in the first season. No, but I did watch Straw
(02:31):
last night. We'll talk about that. That's an emotional wreck
for you right there. If you ain't strong in your emotions,
do not watch. I'm telling you right now. So we
are Quarterback Quarterback. So I'm excited about this because this
is one of those deals where you get to understand
(02:53):
the personalities away from the field, but you also get
to understand who they are as quarterbacks and leaders of
men on the football field. But it's an interesting group
and to say the least, all.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Right here, one of the noise disappears. Everything is falling
right into place.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Let's go.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Pool in my formal organization may have thought I was
being cast away, but I saw an opportunity I had
here with special This life is definitely not normal.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
He's the most popular figure we have.
Speaker 6 (03:33):
That's my man, Joe Pool Borrow look.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Good, all right.
Speaker 7 (03:36):
It's just a part of me that just always wants
to fix things. I over let him turn down. I
do not want to give them the.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Ball back clock is our front.
Speaker 7 (03:44):
It's on him, but it's a lot on him.
Speaker 8 (03:47):
Turn over the ball game.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
I go sometimes you just need to mix it up
a little bit. I just bought a battlebile. I'm pumped
about that.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
But the cake actually cut this one down out in
the woods.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
I'd love to be the quarterback at this offense. It's
just so much thought get too bad. Tom Well, there.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
It is Dereck Goff as one of the quarterbacks. Kirk Cousins,
who we got to understand in the first season that
he was a Coles shopper. He looked like the poster
child for working at Cole's. And you have Joe Cool
Joe Burrow, who everybody just seems to enjoy being around.
(04:30):
All of his teammates love him, the city loves him.
So this is the one thing that I continue to
look at and say, quarterback is going to be outstanding.
Jared Goff who understood that, Hey, some people looked at
me as a castaway when they traded me to Detroit.
I looked at it as an opportunity. People sometimes forget
(04:51):
that he did take La to the Super Bowl, number
one and number two. He was a number one overall pick.
Like what were we thinking about? Like the kid wasn't
going to be able to play? Now I know, people
will say that there are some quarterbacks that are bus
but he was not a bus.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
He was not a bus. It was with Jeff Fisher.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
He had a tendency to throw interceptions in untimely situations.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Learning and you can be coached out of that, thank you.
And that was That's the thing. A lot of things
we give up on athletes because they have a deficiency,
but another coach will look at him and go, hey man,
that's not his fault. That he just needs to be
coached up right, and then they change it, and then
you have a perennial all pro right. I mean, you've
(05:37):
got so many different things that are are able to
be a part of the conversation. So to me, when
you look at the quarterback as a whole, we get
to see different perspectives. Now people are going to look
at that and say, well why in this guy in it?
Why and that guy in it? We got a chance
to watch everybody not gonna get to go. No, no, no,
(06:00):
you know what I mean. You ain't gonna get to go, brother,
Sometimes you can't. Sometimes you can't. We travel light, we
travel far, exactly, and that is that's exactly what elite
sports is.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
It's lonely. You the only one in the gym.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
You got your dad, your mom, your coach screaming at you.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Yep. How many shots you get in? Did you get
three hundred to day? Did you get five hundred to day?
Like you, it gets old, yep, But if you can
endure it, man on the other side, it's crazy.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
And that's that's kind of like what I see in
the NFL A lot hard, especially with quarterbacks. They get broken,
they get tired of the grind. But the ones that
don't they end up in the Pro Bowl. And I
mean Cleveland is in a great spot. They have two
(07:03):
very accurate rookie quarterbacks, which one of them is going
to be the guy that everybody's gonna go wow out
of both of them. I expected to be him, but
you never know. Gabriel might be the guy.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You never know. Sder might be the guy. Yep.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
But like all of the NFL quarterbacks have that moment
where they kind of got to reevaluate.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
That's really what I want.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
I wish that this would have been a part of
you know, like we're gonna end up having hard knocks
in that season, right, like this would have been a
perfect year. For it to be in the North again,
the AFC North, because last year they did it with Pittsburgh,
they did it with Cleveland, and they did it with
all the teams, but it wasn't focused on the situation.
(07:50):
Now there's a situation. Now there's something that is truly going.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
On the other side.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
That's why I wish that if Quarterback was going to
be that I think that they should have did Quarterbacks
strictly on the Cleveland Browns room because this is going
to be chaotic, and then you have the other story
about Shador Sanders and what's going on with him, So
it would have been a lot of controversy and it
(08:16):
would have been perfect.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
It would have been perfect for TV.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
So it will come out pretty soon. July the ninth,
i believe, is the first day that Quarterback will be
back on. I will be all in on that because
I love the other sides of the story. And speaking
of other side of the story, one Texas Longhorn is
ready for his journey into the NFL, and that's Jaden Blue.
(08:40):
You and I are both Dallas Cowboy fans. I know
you're you're on the fence, but are you all.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
The way back?
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Marcus is still trying to figure out if you're all
the way back. You did say we a couple of
weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
I'm back. All right, he's back. He brought me back.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
I'll sort of say, y'all. Can hear the excitement in
his voice about being back. I can't because I was
a kick in the leather region. It's coming. So what
I want to I want you to hear is my
guy Jaden Blue and what it's like and where he
developed his skill because he may end up playing some receiver.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Yeah, you're like a receiver.
Speaker 9 (09:17):
It's an amazing thing to watch highlights.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
I remember just in the draft process learning about you.
Speaker 9 (09:22):
Yeah. I take a lot of pride in being able
to run rocks to catch the ball. I've been doing
it since maybe fourteen fifteen years old. I played seven
on seven and I played strictly receiver. I didn't do nothing,
no running back things. And when I when I go train,
I do a lot of receiver stuff because some of
the running back stuff is natural for me. So I'm
trying to take my receiver game to the next level
(09:42):
so I can be the next grade back to come
out of Dallas.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
He wants to be the next grade back to come
out of Dallas and I.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
You have some tissues.
Speaker 10 (09:56):
Well, what makes that even more better is hearing in
the background before I let.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Go, he listening to the background music I hear, but yeah,
listening to what.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Jayden Blue is trying to accomplish.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
As we talked about, we got guys that they're gonna
have running between the tackles, Miles Sanders and MafA from
from UH from Clemson, and now you got a chance
to have Jaden Blue catching passes out of the backfield.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
I heard Deuce Vaughan.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
I saw interview where Deuce Vaughan is lining up and
being able to be in the slot and be a
wide receiver as well.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
I think he was under used last year.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
I think Deuce Vaughan should have got the ball a
lot more in different situations. Darren Sprolls is someone he
looked up to like they're probably the same hike, so
he didn't look that high. But you start looking at
each other and Deuce's family, so I'm not I'm not
(10:58):
taking shots at him, but I start to understand that
I thought that I thought that Mike McCarthy didn't use
him enough.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
He didn't and he happens, why he is where he is.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, that's that's why he and Galveston fishing with everybody else.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
We're just getting started.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
On a Texas Tuesday edition of The Morning Kickoff.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Seven point thirty four.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
We have Joe Cook of Inside Texas eight seventeen. We
have Kobe Daniels of Okay seeing Fox twenty five to
talk about the thunder. But coming up next, we're gonna
talk Texas Longhorns. There's a report off of a dynamic
duo and I want to get Mark's thoughts on this.
We're just getting started on the Texas Tuesday edition up
(11:47):
the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone. Mike Harball, heards World's
Strongest Man, Deve, Mark Henry, and of course we've got
our guy Marcus behind the board.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
It has been a great morning.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Shout out to LFG Catering a girl Kimmy coming through,
sliding through with us bringing breakfast tacos staff. If you're
on the way into the studio, there is breakfast tacos
for you, so make it's count cost you a little.
It's gonna cost you a lot. May not cast you anything,
but it's gone cost you something. Uh. Speaking of costing,
(12:31):
Arch Manning continues to be part of the conversation. Texas
football is always going to be part of the conversation
because this is the home of Texas football. You can
hear all the games right here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred, the Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app.
(12:51):
And if it is free, it's for you, for me,
and the voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way, does
an unbelievable job. And as we continue to roll on,
Joel Klatt had the conversation about Texas schedule and the
fact that it is now the Arch Manning Era.
Speaker 11 (13:11):
Texas at Ohio State rematch of the College Football Playoff
semi final. Sark is going to take his team up
to the Shoe and face the defending national champions, the
Ohio State Buckeyes. The first start in the Arch era.
Now I know that Arch has started before, but the
first start of the Arch era, this is now his team,
this is his program. And so Arch Manning here as
(13:31):
your starter for Texas and he's going to get that
start against the defending national champion on the road. We've
also got the quarterback situation at Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Who is it going to be? Is it going to be?
Julian saying? I know he's incredibly talented.
Speaker 11 (13:44):
I've really enjoyed watching what he brings to the table
when I've been in Columbus and I've seen practice. You're
gonna have a new offensive play caller and Brian Hartline.
You're gonna have a new defensive play caller and Matt
Patricia at Ohio State. You're gonna have this idea that,
like Steve Sarkisian has brought Texas back to the position
where they have been or we're desperate to be for
(14:06):
a decade, which is right at the forefront of college football.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
He's done a remarkable job.
Speaker 11 (14:11):
But now it's back to back years in which they've
lost in the national semi final. So he wants to
take a step forward. He wants the program to take
a step forward. They've recruited at a ridiculously high level.
You know how I feel about Steve Sarkisian. He is
one hell of a college football coach. He would be
easily in my top five or six in the country
and now he's going against a guy that now is
(14:32):
easily in the top two or three in the country,
and that's Ryan Day. And how different has this offseason
felt for Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes. I mean,
my goodness. Granted they have not beaten Michigan in several years,
but winning the national championship has made this field totally.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
But it's all about Arch Manning and what this Texas
football team is going to do leading in to the
regular season.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
The truth. The other matter is, though it's game one,
why are.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
They making a case that everything is about everybody else
doing well in Texas not?
Speaker 3 (15:11):
I just don't understand why the world of sports.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
In college football is so damn aggressive about Texas failing,
not meeting the mark, not winning, not being.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
A face of college football. Why where's where's this heat
come from?
Speaker 3 (15:32):
I thought it was the SEC. It's not the SEC.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
No, what it is everybody is Look you and I
know that the Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys run
parallel lives. And what do I mean by that? People
want to see Dallas fail. They run their whole show
up at the Four Letter Network all about the Cowboys' failures.
(15:58):
Same thing with the University of Texas because over the
last as he said, Texas just.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Flipped the script not too long ago when coach.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Sark, you know what I'm saying, so for the nation
is Texas Texas Texas throwing out all in your face,
and they're like, you know what, I want Texas to
lose because of this. The only team they want to
see lose more is Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
They don't like Ohio State fans either.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
So you start to look at what is going on
with the sports calendar and it's like, okay, the biggest
game of the year. In Joel Klatt's own top ten
games that could shape twenty twenty five season, the number
one game is the Texas Longhorns versus Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
It's just greatness hate.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
But there was a time when Texas was not great
and there was still hate there.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
So I just thus people love to see Texas fail.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
That's why you sign up.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
That's what you do better chamship, that's why coach, that's
why I beat Texas.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Season is safe exactly. That makes that means you are
that team.
Speaker 10 (17:10):
You are the team everyone wants for targets and in
the words of I just let Simmons say it like this.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Quite number one, because on the one, I mean, you
got to be what it is.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
So as things like that start to go down, you
start to understand why it's happening. So when you look
at this Texas football team and uh, there's a report
from CBS Sports about the top duos in college football
coming into the season, and one of the top duos
coming into the season is Anthony Hill and Colin Simmons.
(17:47):
That's that's you can You can make a case on
any side of the ball that you want to.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
But those two dudes from.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
The Dallas, the Sodo Duncanville area, they coming.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
You know, when you said that, I thought you were
going to say Arch Manning and somebody, and I was
gonna rebuttle the fact. No, No, I don't think that
there's another matchup in college football period where they're gonna
have two picks in the top ten got in the
next draft. Colin Simmons and Anthony Hill both get drafted
(18:20):
in the top ten.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Well, here, I think, does that ever happens? Simmons Simmons
got another year, Anthony Hill does it? Simmons has one
more year?
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Okay? Good?
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Yeah, So you start to look at who they are,
what they've been able to do as they're learning the positions.
You remember in the very beginning, when Anthony Hill's first
year and they came in the second year, he said,
I'm just trying to learn my position. And it was like, dude,
you were all American freshman, all American your first year,
(18:48):
but you're still learning. We had Derek Johnson on the show.
Derek Johnson said, this dude is a monster. He's learning
even more in the film room. And once that's what
people truly don't understand, and these young kids don't get it.
The more film you watch, the more you see people's tendencies,
(19:10):
and the more you can see where this play is
going to go just by setting it up.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
What Big Simmy used to say, I could tell where
he was going about what he had.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
For breakfast exactly.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
I could smell it on his like just those little subtleties.
Tony Brackens, great long harmed player, somebody I just really respect,
you know, almost a preacher. Now, Tony said, man, I
would just watch guy's knuckles. Yeah, and if I've seen
(19:43):
that they were pressing down into the ground hard, I
knew they were coming right, so run like if it
was off, I knew I could go right. And it's
just like little tiny, tiny things that you have to
watch films Texas.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Texas used to always have if they were gonna run
the ball, the back was a little and when they
were in a shotgun, the back was a little bit
behind the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
When they were gonna pass the ball, he was up.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
It was so ridiculous that nobody, not none of them
analysts in that room knew that on film they could
tell when Texas was gonna run and throw. It was unbelievable.
We would sit at home and play the game. It'd
be like, oh, yeah, they're about to run that ball
to the left. All they're about to run a wide
(20:30):
receiver screen all the play action ball over the top.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
You can see it now. Good luck, good luck trying
to figure it out.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
But Texas has the number two ranked dynamic duo according
to CBS Sports Penn State. The running back Nicholas Singleton
and k Tron Allen are number one duo. Number three
duo Texas will go up against them right away, Jeremiah
Smith and Carneal Tate. The wires cruit, especially with a
(21:01):
new quarterback Julian Sam and Clemson has the defensive end TJ.
Parker and the defensive tackle Peter Woods Arizona State team
that took Texas to the limit. Sam Levitt and Jordan
Tyson are their dynamic duo. Some honorable mentions are Alabama's
Ryan Williams and Jeremy Bernard, Sam Coleman and Eric Singleton
(21:25):
of Auburn. Those are the ones that will round it out.
So good stuff.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Ready to go.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
I'm excited about it and football can continue to roll.
And we'll continue those conversations as we come up next
with our guy Joe Cook of Inside Texas. We'll ask
him about what he thinks of the dynamic duo and
where does he see Texas getting better at And of
course we gotta definitely ask him about recruiting because of
(21:52):
business is picking up for Texas, but also in baseball.
I know he doesn't cover baseball anymore, but he does know.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
All enough about Texas baseball.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Right here on a Texas Tuesday edition of The Morning
Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Welcome back to.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
The Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM Thursday,
I mean Am Thursday. I was going to say, it's Tuesday,
so you know what day it is. Right here on
AM thirteen hundred the Zone. It's time for us to
go talk to our guys, Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
You can follow them on social media at Joseph Cook
(22:32):
eighty nine and Joe I want to get into this conversation.
There was an article that came out on CBS Sports
that was talking about the dynamic duos, and they put
together Anthony Hill and Colin Simmons, which I think is
an outstanding duo because we expect a lot from both
of those players. But offensively, which duo would you rather see?
(22:56):
Is it going to be the running back room or
is it going to be obvious see arch Manning and
let's saying Moseley maybe, or a Wingo.
Speaker 7 (23:06):
I like arch.
Speaker 12 (23:07):
Manning and Ryan Wingo to end up being the offensive,
dynamic duo. But I also wouldn't I wouldn't under sell what.
Speaker 7 (23:15):
Jack Injuries may be able to do with this offense.
Speaker 12 (23:18):
We saw over the past three years how well Jatavian
Sanders and Gunnar Helm have been able to do playing
in Steve Sarkesian's offense, and Jack Injuries is kind of
like both those guys is you.
Speaker 7 (23:30):
Know, they're they're not all the same player.
Speaker 12 (23:32):
Hunt Helm wasn't like Sanders, but they they all are
kind of receivers first and blockers by trade instead of
you know, blockers first, receivers by trade. But but andres
Can can do a lot, really threatened that middle of
the field like you see so many elite offenses do.
Speaker 7 (23:50):
And I think it's still really an open question who's
going to leave.
Speaker 12 (23:53):
The team in catches that I'm excited to figure out
who that person's gonna be. But I wouldn't be surprised
injuries is battling with some of the you know, maybe
wide receiver two and three for literally second and third
on the team in catches.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Yeah, that's gonna be. That's gonna be an interesting duo
to say the leagues. But some of the other things
that are going on right now, Joe obviously as recruiting,
and you've put out the list of schedule commitment dates
for some of these targets for the University of Texas.
Speaker 7 (24:27):
Yeah, this is this is when kitchen table time happens,
as I like to call it.
Speaker 12 (24:33):
You know, you go on all these visits in the
months of May, and June and you get down and
it's time to get to the kitchen table, and a
lot of these kids want to sign before their senior
year starts, get it over with.
Speaker 7 (24:43):
I'm sure there's also maybe some house.
Speaker 12 (24:46):
Decision July first issues and things that need to be
sorted out, but they want to get all this stuff
sorted out and done, and it kind of stinks that
a lot of them.
Speaker 7 (24:57):
Choose July fourth.
Speaker 12 (24:59):
I you know, I'm happy for them to get to celebrate,
but doesn't mean much celebration for me. But you know,
Texas has a lot of decisions are following in the
next few days that start on June twenty six with
a zager Crowell running back from Alabama, probably ends up
staying in Alabama. Then June twenty seventh is malchi Leie,
(25:20):
the big Honolulu offensive lineman. The Longhorns do have a
good chance here, but so to do Michigan and Georgia
and even Alabama. And then you may start to see
some of the dominoes fall for Texas. Later that day,
Chase Calicut from North Shore and Houston, someone Texas has
been on.
Speaker 7 (25:40):
For a while. The Longhorns are trying to hold off Georgia.
Speaker 12 (25:43):
And then when the calendar turns to July, Kendall Guerville
from Fort Myers, Florida, a defensive tackle, maybe that fourth
defensive tackle in the class, Texas can get him in.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
So in July fourth there are.
Speaker 12 (25:55):
One, two, three, three commitments. Texas is in good shape
for one of them, but there's still work to be
done on all three and we'll see how the rest
of July goes.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Joe, A lot of people are saying that Texas is
not having a great recruiting season so far. You think
that's due to the fact that Texas is so deep
in the critical positions already and kids think they're well
they're not. I'm not going to get to play there
for a year and a half, two years, so let
(26:30):
me go somewhere where I can play.
Speaker 12 (26:33):
Yeah, it's there's so many different things, I think because
the decision tielines have all been constricted into like basically
these three weeks.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
Yeah, you get the highest highs and the lowest low
So you know, you see two kids go to Texas A.
Speaker 12 (26:50):
And M, and it's like, oh no, you know these
Texas one of these kids and now they're not going
to Texas and.
Speaker 7 (26:56):
Then Texas gets a five star on Sunday, Like there's
a lot going on.
Speaker 12 (27:01):
I'm sure that's one of the things teams are selling
to try to counter Texas. But there is early playing
time available at a number of spots, you know. I
think if Trevor Guseby has the type of year he has,
then you know there's playing There's gonna be playing time
available on the offensive line. There's gonna be at least
three spots opening most likely if if Goosby goes and
(27:23):
then DJ Campbell and Cole Hutson exhausted eligibility, and you know,
offensive line.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
Early playing time is tough to find, but it's easy
to sell.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (27:32):
You know, Anthony Hill is likely headed the draft after
this year. Somebody's got to step up after Colin Simmons
pull ghost the NFL next year. A lot of the
wide receivers.
Speaker 7 (27:43):
Are you know, entering, uh you know, the the ladder.
Speaker 12 (27:46):
End of their career, so they can they can combat
this early playing time stuff. And they have good examples
of guys who you know, didn't play a ton right
away and yet still had fantastic careers. You know, you
look at your Tagan sandersy base. It was stuck on
field goal team his entire freshman year, and then he
goes and becomes I think maybe like tight end three
(28:06):
in the draft or something like that. I think a
lot of it is just the volume of decisions in
the condensed time.
Speaker 7 (28:14):
But we'll find out a little.
Speaker 12 (28:16):
Bit more about where things are going. Texas is a
little bit more patient. They don't They haven't pushed as much,
maybe compared to some other schools. You see, they have
about fifteen and there are schools that already have about
twenty or twenty two at this juncture or getting close
to compete completing their class. So I think the story
(28:38):
will really be told these next two days. I think
Texas likes where it sits, but of course they've had
some losses as well.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Joe, let me ask you about wide receiver, and the
history has told us already that coach Sark likes the
fast six foot five eleven speedster that runs the four
to two, four to three.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Now they have three.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Why I receive as potentially that are going to be
sixty three Big guys like, how's that going to change
the dynamic of the way that the Sark offense runs.
Speaker 12 (29:11):
You know, I think Sark would like for it to
stay the same. That'll be really tough, you know, with
with the speed isn't the exact same, but it probably
gives you the possibility of the potential to maybe.
Speaker 7 (29:26):
Have some more you know, physical wide receivers. The guy
they have committed in the.
Speaker 12 (29:31):
Class, isn't that six foot or that's one of the
two guys they have committed in the class. Isn't that
six foot eighty pound mold right now? And Chris Stewart
he reaffirmed his commitment. They also have a I thought
was a really smart pickup Cohen Brown for Waksahatchie six
one eighty. The guy who's fitting that mold you're talking
about that they're trying to get into this class and battling.
Speaker 7 (29:53):
Notre Dame for is Caden Finley, Jeremichael's.
Speaker 12 (29:56):
Son, someone who Texas is really fine Notre Dame with
like the Irish have done.
Speaker 7 (30:02):
I wouldvent sure they may have done the.
Speaker 12 (30:04):
Best job recruiting and we'll see if that earns the
eventual commitment for for Marcus Freeman or whether Texas has
done the job to get the pledge come July fourth.
But that's one of the more contentious battles between Texas
and Notre Dame and Texas really you know, trying to
do more than sell the legacy aspect. Yeah, his dad's Jermichael,
(30:28):
but at the same time, he can you know, he's Caden,
he can do something different. He's a wide receiver, not
a tight end. He's he's a different player. So they
tried to sell that aspect of it. In July fourth
we'll find out what the what the verdict is.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Maybe they sell the quarterback that's throwing the ball to you.
That would probably be a good decide in factor for
me if I was a tight end or wide receiver.
Speaker 12 (30:51):
Yeah, between arch Manning being around one or two more years,
then you know somebody from.
Speaker 7 (30:57):
The group of five Star d bel for Star kJ
Lacey or you know.
Speaker 12 (31:04):
Red shirt softbore Trey Owens, there's going to be somebody
there pretty good at throwing.
Speaker 7 (31:09):
The deep ball at that point.
Speaker 12 (31:11):
So the quarterbacks never something I'm worried about, and especially
in this class of deep bell He may end up
as the number one prospect come come December, come January,
or whenever they finish rankings, and should be a lot
of fun to track him.
Speaker 7 (31:25):
He actually gets to play. Here's a date to watch.
Speaker 12 (31:27):
I think on September, the weekend of September twelfth, he
and his Fort Lauderdale American Heritage team go to New
Orleans to play in the car which is home to
another Texas commit and Hayward.
Speaker 7 (31:40):
Howard on the defensive side.
Speaker 12 (31:41):
So anybody's got time to make an eight hour drive
there and back before. I think that's an afternoon game,
then go watch two Texas commits.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
Go at it, no doubt. There he is Joe Cook
of Inside Texas. As always, you can follow him for
all the latest at Joseph Cook eighty nine.
Speaker 3 (31:59):
Thanks Joe, Thanks Joe, Thanks, thank you guys.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
When we come back, we're gonna talk about the Major League.
Some things are happening and it's been long overdue. Right
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen
hundred the Zone. Great stuff from our guy, Joe Cook
of Inside Texas. Make sure you follow that Joseph Cook
(32:23):
eighty nine. And right now, we want to give you
an opportunity. That's right, folks, you get an opportunity to
win a pair of tickets to go see Coheed and Cambria.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
You can go and check them out September the eighteenth
at the Moody Center. All you gotta do is tap
that red microphone on the new and improved iHeartRadio app
and leave the keyword metal, Metal is your keyword of
the day to win a pair of tickets to go
see Coheed and Cambria September the eighteenth at the Moody Center.
(32:57):
We'll give you an opportunity to do that all week long.
Also make sure you tune it in to the Craig
Way Show this afternoon as they give you an opportunity
to win a pair of tickets to go see Laney Wilson.
I wanted to get into this conversation about the Major leagues.
Major Leagues is getting closer and closer to the All
Star Break. All Star Break will be going on at
(33:20):
during SEC Media Days in Atlanta. Chipper Jones, I'm efforting
him to get on with us. He's going to be
managing the futures game against Mark. He's gri Grissom as
a former Longhorn, as a former Atlanta Brave as well.
But I wanted to get into the Oakland A's because
(33:41):
the Oakland A's have finally finally broken ground to be
able to build their ballpark in Las Vegas. Everybody's been
talking about this. They've got everything set up, and yesterday
was the groundbreaking ceremony in Dallas Braden, former Oakland player
(34:01):
but also announcer for the Oakland A's.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
Well the A's now he got a chance to speak yesterday.
Speaker 5 (34:08):
How we doing, everybody? Let's try that again.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
How are we doing? Everybody?
Speaker 5 (34:16):
That's the sound I like to hear. I want to
thank you guys for coming out today. I know you've
got a lot of stuff on your schedule here.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
We appreciate you. We greatly appreciate.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
You carving out the time to come and enjoy this
incredible occasion for us. For those of you folks who
don't know me, who might not be watching A's baseball,
which we're going to change by the end of this,
I promise you that my name is Dallas Brayden. I'm
the broadcaster for the athletics, and I'm somebody who has
got to live a very fortunate life, a very fortunate path.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
Here.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
I was a little fella who got to grow up
cheering for the Green and Gold.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
I was the little fella who got to grow up.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
And play for the Green and Gold, and now I'm
the much older fella who gets to talk about the
Green and Gold and what they have done on the
baseball field. So I just like many of you, very
excited for a day just like today.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
And everyone didn't think this was going to happen. The
conversation had been going on. Las Vegas have been going
back and forth about being the home of the A's.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
Well. Construction is about.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
To start twenty twenty five, the concrete starts, twenty twenty six,
the steal starts, the first slab of grade sad poor.
Everything starts to happen twenty seven. You get to finish
your suites, you get to finish the stadium.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
Thirty three thousand.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
Seat stadium is being erected, and it will happen. Opening
Day will be in twenty twenty eight, and Rob Manford,
the Commissioner of Baseball, plans on being there.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
I'm sure between now and twenty two, twenty eight, I'm
gonna be back here in Las Vegas. But I'll tell
you one thing, absolutely for certain, I will be here
opening day twenty twenty eight to celebrate with John Fisher,
his entire team, and I hope the entire state of Nevada.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Thank you very much. Think about that.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
You've been working on this, you've been wanting this, but
now you have to wait until twenty twenty eight. But
at least you know, at least you know you're in
the process of getting a team in Las Vegas and
Oakland of the A's will now have a home finally finished.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
Man.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Listen, I'm very excited for him because I've we talked
about this a couple of weeks ago, and Las Vegas
is they're striving to be like every other major city.
And for years Vegas was kind of off limits for
pro sports because of gambling. And now that's over and
(37:06):
done with, and I see Vegas is being a destination
place for athletes.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Yeah, it's definitely gonna be something for athletes to go to.
But you gotta be careful because, just like anything else,
your name get attached to these casinos, your name get
attached to this.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
The betting aspect of.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Zero tolerance, that's all you gotta say, guys, zero tolerance.
You're getting traded, you're getting cut, You're not getting any
money guaranteed if you get caught remotely gambling, being a
part of a gambling operation. Hanging out with people that gambled,
like you better be very careful, like when you get
to that point and it's an unwritten rule. Hey man,
(37:51):
if you get caught gambling, you know, get your guaranteed money.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
Guys won't do it.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Yeah, they have a twenty They have a minor league
team that is already there in Las Vegas. That's where
they've been playing a lot of their games. So different organization,
but still you start to look at it, and there
are substitutes in Vegas for gam you have to make
sure of that. And the funding path of the two
billion dollars Vegas Ballpark, there's so many different people that
(38:18):
are there and so many different entities. Obviously the casinos
are gonna pay a huge part of that to try
to help get teams there.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
What's the biggest amenity for you as a baseball player
that you want in your stadium?
Speaker 3 (38:34):
In the locker room.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
It's all in the locker and the like, the activity
of the building. Well, I mean, you've got to be
able to work out in the facility. You gotta have
good you know, you gotta have good cages because a
lot of times in Vegas is gonna be too hot.
So you want to make sure that. Yeah, you got
to get a lot of work there. Obviously, locker room
(38:59):
is the biggest part for me. A field is gonna
take care of itself here in major leagues, so they're
gonna make it top of the line. But you definitely
want to make sure that you get everything taken care
of moving forward as far as your training ability and
what you can be because most of the time they
want you to spend it all your days.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
What about entertainment? Why if you want to answer that
when we come back, I.
Speaker 3 (39:20):
Don't even know entertainment. I am the entertainment. Oh, there
you go. Coming up. That's hour number two.
Speaker 1 (39:28):
A lot going on in the NFL, and what got
NBA Draft is coming up? Come on, man, we almost
out of basketball talk? Yeah right, this is it this
last week, coming back right here on the Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
(39:48):
to our number two, oh the morning kickoff right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and our
number one. We talked about Netflix getting back.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
That's right. Joe Burrow.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
Cousins and Jared Goff Kirk Cousins and Jared Golf will
all be on there. It's interesting because Kirk Cousins is
the backup quarterback right now, so it'll be interesting to
see how he's dealing with becoming the backup even though
he's making the most money. Joe Klatt talked about the
Arch era in the most Important game starts with Texas
(40:26):
traveling to the shoot to take on defending national champion
Ohio State, and we talk dynamic duo with Joe Cook.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
Joe Cook believes that it's.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
Going to be Arch Manning and Ryan Wingo on the
offensive side of the ball. But don't forget about the
new tight end and the Oakland A's finally break ground.
Right now, I want to get into Travis Hunter. Travis Hunter,
the wide receiver slash defensive back, Heisman Trophy winning first
(40:58):
round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, did something that
has never been done by a draft pick in NFL history,
h non quarterback. As a matter of fact, Travis Hunter,
reported by Adam Schefter, on June twenty second, officially signed
his four year, forty six point sixty five million dollars
(41:20):
fully guaranteed contract. His thirty point five to seven million
dollars signing bonus was paid all up front, making him
the first non quarterback not drafted number one overall to
receive his entire signing bonus up front. That was negotiated
(41:42):
by his Young Money. That's right, Young Money Sports Agency. Yeah,
a million, a million, a million dollars. He has done
that and he is the only first person to ever
do that.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
Now, now you're talking about running money lord.
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Yeah, thirty thirty MILLI that means as soon as I
sign it hard you look at your phone.
Speaker 3 (42:08):
Direct deposit is stay to your Chase app. Yeah, and
you look thirty million dollars in there. Thirty million in there?
Holy hell. Yeah, that's crazy. And now you know he
got married by the brand new home.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
He has done everything you would expect to do in
your life at this point now in a week, in
a week, yeah, in a week.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
Thank god, man, God is good all the time. Listen.
I'm just telling you, when you start.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
To think about that and the potential of it all,
where you get thirty million dollars, thirty point five million.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
Dollars, I'm get that point five that count.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
That's the point five that count, that count. So you
put that down in writing in the house that everything,
everything is there like, as soon as you sign that,
that's wild man, You know what, man Like, that's the
kind of agency that will lead other guys to change
and who they who represents them, Like, hey man, you
(43:17):
got that.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
Dude his money up front? I won't go with y'all.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
Yeah, Colin Simmons, Hey you're coming up young money.
Speaker 1 (43:26):
They getting people all they bread, They are good. They upfront,
up front front. Sorry I left that out up front.
So it is a interesting You ain't got nothing but
to do to work. You gotta wake up and go
to the facility and work. That's all you gotta do.
And play at your fullest. That's what it's all about.
You start to think about all of these games and
(43:49):
all of these moments in his life where he became
the first person to do this, the first person.
Speaker 3 (43:55):
To do that.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
You look at him playing all the snaps that he
did in college. Now they are trying to decide where
they're going to play him because he's just that talented.
He has the ability and the one thing everybody I
was thinking about this, everybody keeps talking about the fact
that he's not going to be able to do it
because of this reason. He's not going to be able
(44:16):
to do it because of you're not going to be
able to have that many plays on offense and defense.
He doesn't have to. He doesn't have to play that
many plays on either side of the ball. If he
wants to be a primary wide receiver, he has that
ability to do so. If he wants to be a
primary defensive back, he has the ability to do so.
(44:37):
But the other positions can be complementary and he doesn't
have to play every play.
Speaker 3 (44:43):
So what about the focal point? Is my thing.
Speaker 2 (44:47):
If you're going to be the focal point of the offense,
if you're going to be the number one wide.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
Receiver that they're throwing at, then go ahead and do it.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
Be the number one. But if you're going to be
the number two and you're going to be running rounds
just to draw attention, like I'm gonna go play corner
because at corner I can be the.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
Number one guy every play. Yep.
Speaker 1 (45:09):
And Dion Sanders was the best at playing a full
time roster spot at corner, and then he'll have like
fifteen plays where he would run on offense.
Speaker 3 (45:22):
You know, fifteen is a lot, yep. You know.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
But Brian Thomas is their number one wide receiver, the
wide receiver out of the alisod go play corner let
Ryan Robinson his rip, but he's going to be the
slot wide receiver. Travis Hunter, He's listed as their number
one wide receiver at the slot. Parker Washington and Chandler
Brave Boy is listed in the slot as we ever
(45:49):
heard of him exactly. So with him having that type
of opportunity with Trevor Lawrence as the quarterback, you know
he's going to get the ball to you.
Speaker 3 (45:58):
He has that ability.
Speaker 1 (45:59):
If he can stay up right, you're gonna cause problems
on the other side. Now, defensively, they have Jerry and
Jones listed as the number one defensive back with Travis
Hunter as his backup. Obviously that's gonna flip flop as
we Go's gonna change. It's gonna happen, no doubt about it.
(46:19):
But what I like about Travis Hunter is the fact
that this dude's motor never turns off. He's always on
ten and that is rare for a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
Like everybody thinks he's gonna get knocked around. I don't
believe that. I think he never It's never ever happened.
Speaker 1 (46:40):
In middle school, he was the guy in high school,
he was the guy.
Speaker 3 (46:45):
In college, he was the guy.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
And not only was he the guy in college, but
he was the guy on both sides of the ball harge.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
We talked about it.
Speaker 2 (46:54):
Remember that second game of the season. The first game
he played one hundred and two plays. The second game
he played one hundred and twenty one plays. It's never
been done before. That's got to count for something. Oh,
I agree, I agree.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
You don't think that he's gonna not be the guy
in the NFL when, even if it's not the first year,
the second year, he's gonna be the guy eventually. I
definitely believe he's gonna be one of those developmental not
in a negative developmental, But I'm saying you know as
well as I do, if you are trying to master something,
(47:34):
you have to work at that the entire time you
want to fail. But if you want to be a
number one wide receiver, you gotta work at that. If
you want to be a number one dB you gotta.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
Work at that.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
You're splitting time from both of those positions. So let's
just say this week he comes in and they say
you are strictly running routes all day today. That is
what you're gonna do, then tomorrow you're gonna do dB work.
If they can balance that out, he's gonna be just fine.
It's just a lot because the thinking part of it,
(48:09):
the thinking aspect of it. He has never had an
issue because a lot of that is go do you
That's a big different lot of Yes. Has always been
the case with Darryl Reeves or Champ Bailey.
Speaker 10 (48:24):
They never ran one hundred eighty play eighty plays on
offense and defense. That's that's a whole like college is not.
It's not as intense as in the NFL. NFL is
a bigger playbook.
Speaker 3 (48:40):
Yeah. So my my, that's my only.
Speaker 1 (48:43):
I mean, he only he's only gonna have to know
the plays that he's in, to be quite honest with you,
I mean that's the reality.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
You know.
Speaker 1 (48:50):
He said that he all he likes to do is
play video games and watch football, watch tape.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (48:58):
So if you got a guy that don't go out,
he don't eat a lot. So it's not like he's
hanging out at the find downing establishments.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
He's watching film.
Speaker 2 (49:09):
Yeah, that's what he likes to do, get his iPad
and watch film.
Speaker 10 (49:13):
I can see him on one side of the master everything.
Speaker 1 (49:16):
Dion mentioned that he's never seen a player like him.
Speaker 10 (49:21):
You know, I can see him on one side of
the ball full time and on the other side ten
to fifteen plays his rookie years, That's what I'm thinking,
and maybe a couple a couple of years down the line,
he gets more and more time on the other side
of the ball until you know it's totally balanced out.
Speaker 3 (49:41):
Yeah, it's gonna be.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
It's gonna be something to pay attention to when it
comes to him. But moral of this story, get your
money main because the money looks long for the most part.
For when it comes to what Travis Hunter and his
ability to get to the NFL of being at one
of the top draft picks out there.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
So I'm excited.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
You're looking at my arm, man like, stop looking at
my ash I'm not looking at your ashy elbows please,
I mean, go to our social media folks, make sure
y'all don't. Yeah, y'all, And the thing about it is,
what are you putting on there?
Speaker 3 (50:18):
That's water. That's what got you in this situation in
the first place.
Speaker 1 (50:24):
Let me let me go to my trusty backpack. Your
lovely wife had made fun of me at one point.
Speaker 3 (50:31):
Yeah, she was not so there you go. She was
not nice to meet this morning after seeing the video.
Speaker 1 (50:41):
Like, where is your lotion when I came in the studio,
I wouldn't expect me to be good on video.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
Oh my gosh, that's lather right there too. Oh yeah,
this is gonna be different.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
There was coming up Smiths and stuff for people coming
up next. Texas has made some moves in the transfer
portlal and I'm talking about on the baseball field. We'll
also give you an update of some recruits that will
be coming for basketball. That's right right here on the
morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
(51:21):
We don't have them for long, so let's get right
into it. My guy, Coby Daniels is up in Oka
See getting ready for a celebration. You can follow him
at Coby Underscore Daniels on social media, My Man Championship
and Oka See. You got to see it firsthand. Tell
(51:42):
us all about it.
Speaker 13 (51:45):
First of all, Man, it's good to hear your voice.
I know we usually talked during football season, but what
a special occasion it is for the state of Oklahoma.
I haven't slept really over the last month throughout this
entire title run, but Sunday was one of the more
iconic corting events I've ever been a part of. For
the Thunder to go to a Game seven, the twentieth
in the NBA Finals, history quinch on the home floor
(52:06):
and just basically the party that has been going on
since Sunday night, it's it's pretty magical to be a
part of. And a huge day here today. The Pecom
Center is already filling up. There's gonna be a trophy
ceremony on the court, and then the championship parade is
supposed to start at ten thirty to morning.
Speaker 1 (52:23):
Man, that is crazy to me because you you you
hit the nail on the head when you start to
think about the OKC Thunder, what they've been through with
this journey.
Speaker 3 (52:34):
When you go back to KD.
Speaker 1 (52:37):
Russell Westbrook and of course James Harden and now you
have and you got SGA and now you have SGA
with Chad Holmgren and Jalen Williams. Outstanding stuff to see
the transformation and the fan base getting a.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
Finally get rewarded for their loyalty.
Speaker 13 (52:58):
I mean, it's it's one of the all time turnarounds, right.
I mean, we go back to twenty twelve when the
Thunder lost to the Heat in five, and you had
a very young Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden,
and at that point in time, everybody across the country said, Hey,
no worries, this Thunder team's going to be back in
this position over and over and over, and they never
got back there again.
Speaker 7 (53:16):
You had Kevin Durant.
Speaker 13 (53:17):
Injuries, Russell Westbrook injuries, James Harden goes to Houston, and
that team was just never able to get back to
the finals. So I think throughout this run, despite this
current version of the Thunder being so young, there was
a massive amount of urgency to take advantage of this
opportunity because it's not a guarantee. Even though they're set
up really well with how young they are and having
everybody under contract, it's never a guarantee that you're going
(53:39):
to have another opportunity to win a title. And you know,
Game seven rolls around, I know, like the Tyre's Halliburton thing,
I think is a perfect example of that. Right, he
gets hurt in Game seven. You just can't guarantee that
you're going to be in position to capitalize every single year,
and the Thunder were able to do that. They were
incredible all regular season. They faced adversity over and over,
and I think this fight, the youth that showed at
(54:01):
times this postseason talent ultimately won out. And it's pretty
cool to see this group of guys get it done together.
Speaker 1 (54:08):
Well, it's a tel of two philosophies, this team philosophy
that they have right now in this current roster, as
opposed to the philosophy of let me get mine philosophy
with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden and Sergebaka,
where they all succeeded so fast that their money came
(54:30):
up and they took the money over the championship. And
this team, you can see that they really like each other.
Speaker 2 (54:41):
They like the team atmosphere. They do all their interviews together, Like,
have you had any conversations with any of the players
about that philosophy?
Speaker 13 (54:53):
Yeah, I mean I think that they'll just genuinely hang
out together off the floor.
Speaker 7 (54:58):
You know. I think there's a.
Speaker 13 (55:00):
Reception in sports that every team hangs out together when
they're not playing and top practicing and that they all
get along right you think about like your little league
teams and everybody just assumes that it's that way and
the professional ranks, and the reality is that's kind of
a rarity. And I think what made this finals especially
special with the two teams participating in it, because I
(55:20):
want to give the Pacers the same level of credit.
The team aspect of both the Thunder and Pacers, the
team chemistry, the fact that both of those rosters like
genuinely got along, were friends on and off the court.
I think showed with the teamwork that was displayed by
both the Thunder and Pacers in this series. And you know,
you see these guys, they're all so unselfish, they all
(55:42):
root for each other. Different different players on this Thunder
roster have had special moments throughout the postseason and nobody
makes it about me. To your point, I think that's
the biggest difference between this version of the Thunder and
like you said, that previous version where you did have
superstars future Hall of Famers, but I mean there were
so many times with those teams that it was kind
of just leaning on one guy to be spectacular, and uh,
(56:05):
this this is a much different version of the Thunder.
Speaker 2 (56:07):
Did you see Shay Gilger's Alexander hand the MVP trophy
to Jalen Williams and yeah, and he said that he's
going to win one. I guarantee it. I'm gonna make
it happen. So that means that the next time that
they get there, he's going to defer to him. He's
(56:28):
going to try to get him the MVP. That's a friend,
that's a teammate.
Speaker 13 (56:34):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, those those two guys are such
good friends.
Speaker 7 (56:37):
And and Shay has I think in many ways.
Speaker 13 (56:39):
Mentor Jada, And we saw a lot of postseason just
the maturity and Jada's game. It has come a long
way in a very short amount of time. Last year
there were people having a conversation about whether he's an
actual building block for the future of this organization with
some of the playoffs shortcoming, and this this postseason we
really saw him. I think in the early stages of
the playoffs have some up and down golden but he
(57:00):
flourished as the postseason went on and became a big
reason they won this series to the point marks that
I mean after Game six, there was a real debate
about if Jadav had a monster Game seven, could he
get the finals MVP. I mean those both of those guys.
Speaker 1 (57:15):
Well, he played three positions. He played two, three, and.
Speaker 3 (57:19):
Four and by five five.
Speaker 2 (57:22):
Well what they put him in They put him in
at center at times. So I mean it's that's a
versatile piece. What a valuable piece to have on your team.
Speaker 13 (57:34):
Yeah, he played point guard growing up and as he
grew into his body. Uh, you know, it gave him
the versatility I think to do a lot of different things.
He's a mismatch for forwards because of his his ball
handling and his quickness. Uh, he's a mismatch for guards
because of his his height and strength and physicality. And
you know, we thought all season long. He just fitted
the center for a good portion of the year when
(57:54):
Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren were out. So he's an
incredibly versatile player. There's been a lot of comparison and
to Scottie Pippen being the Scottie Pippen to Shay's Michael Jordan.
I think in a lot of ways that's an accurate
although I think he's a different player. It's an accurate
description because Scotti had so many tools in the bag
and Jade up is very much.
Speaker 7 (58:13):
The same way.
Speaker 1 (58:14):
Talk about your journey with this. You know you talked
about it. You do a lot, you used to do
a lot of radio. Now you're doing the TV part
of this for Fox twenty five and OKC and ABC
and Tulsa, But you also have been You've covered this
sport so much, How interesting and how much fun has
it been on this journey this year and being a
(58:36):
part of a championship run.
Speaker 13 (58:39):
I think like watching this team throughout the regular season
and seeing how much improved they were with adding Alex
Carusso and Isaiah Hertenshein from what last last year's version was.
I knew probably around the midway mark of this season
that this group is special and they were going to
have a real chance. I think when you see the
momentum they had down the stretch of the regular season,
I was telling my bosses for the playoffs started, like
(59:00):
we need to start making arrangements for what an NBA
Finals run would look like. This is a true title
contender and barring you know, some massive upset the postseason
or injuries, they're going to be in position to make
a run. So I think understanding how special this team
was and what the opportunity ahead was kind of set
me up to really, I think, just embrace it as
(59:22):
it was happening, knowing that this this had a chance
to be incredibly special and ultimately it goes that way.
And man, I just I have felt humbled to be
a part of the ride and to experience a championship,
to be on the floor Sunday nights and watch the
confetti drop from the top of the pay Comm Center
as these guys are hugging each other and years of
hard work, especially for like Clay bed at the oder,
(59:44):
Sam Presti, who I think is one of the all
time great gms, and just the organization as a whole
Thunder fan.
Speaker 3 (59:50):
It was a great night for sure.
Speaker 1 (59:52):
Well, we appreciate you taking the time. I know you
got a bud you gotta get done, and of course
you got a party a celebration to get to Matt.
I appreciate you, and we'll talk again once football season
gets closer.
Speaker 13 (01:00:05):
That's right, we'll be popping bottles later this afternoon. We'll
touch base.
Speaker 1 (01:00:10):
All right, my man, thank you. All right, there's my guy,
Kobe Daniels. He and I have been on each other's
shows for years and when he took over a TV.
I would always see him courtside. I would always see
him around the game, and I was like, dude, you're
all in. He was like, man, this has been an
(01:00:31):
unbelievable ride. And as the rides has continued, all it
came to an end with a championship. He gets to
be a part of the parade. As he said, he's
popping bottles. He's gotten a chance to be close to
those guys and see the maturation of a friendship between
Jalen Williams, SGA and you brought up something to Mark
(01:00:54):
that we've talked about all season along. It's not just
one person doing an interview in a postgame interview, it's
the entire squad coming over and getting their flowers in
a humble, humble SGA being as good as he is
sharing the love with his teammates. Coming up next, I'm
sharing the love with my teammate d Mark Henry brings
(01:01:16):
you his World's Strongest take coming up right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zam.
Speaker 3 (01:01:25):
You heard the peak. You know what that means.
Speaker 1 (01:01:28):
W w Ee Hall of Famer and the World's Strongest Man.
The Mark Henry brings you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
Take it away, big fellow art, what's up, man? You
know what time it is? What time? Is it?
Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
Time for the world's strongest take by the world's strongest man.
My guess back then they didn't know.
Speaker 3 (01:01:55):
Man. Now I'm hot, they're all along. Well, guys, I
got this.
Speaker 2 (01:02:05):
Last week to talk about basketball, and then it's gonna
be oh b no basketball, and that's gonna be a
sad time for me. So I'm gonna maximize it and
make the most of this situation. I'm gonna talk about
the Boston Celtics today. Tomorrow we'll do a precursor for
(01:02:32):
the NBA Draft, and Friday we will talk about another
team that I feel like really needs some conversation about
where they're going in the future, and that is the
Los Angeles Lakers.
Speaker 3 (01:02:52):
But let's stay with Boston Celtics today.
Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
It already started the mass exodus of talent that's got
a really expensive price tag on it. The Boston Celtics
traded away Drew Holliday.
Speaker 3 (01:03:12):
For Anthony for the for the Portland Trailblazers, and.
Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
I wanted to say they got younger. They're spending less
money and the luxury cap. Right now, the Boston Celtics
are significantly over it.
Speaker 3 (01:03:34):
They're not, They're not barely over it. They have.
Speaker 2 (01:03:39):
Five hundred million dollars tied up in this team. That's
it's one hundred million dollars more than everybody else.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (01:03:52):
So they have to get rid of these players, especially
for the production.
Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
They won a championship. It worked, it worked, but this
ownership is.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
Like, yeah, we don't want to spend all of this money,
so holiday first one to go.
Speaker 3 (01:04:09):
The next piece is going to be por singers.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
You pulled up Marcus that he's never played a full
season for the Boston Celtics. This past year he paid
fifty seven games, and the year prior was sixty. You
can't spend an exorbitant amount of money and on a
(01:04:35):
player when you're already over the cap.
Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
And he's an.
Speaker 1 (01:04:39):
Aging player that has lower production than he did.
Speaker 2 (01:04:43):
The last two years. So I see that happening. Jalen
Brown is not going anywhere. He's a star in the NBA,
and regardless of how much money you pay him, you
have to continue to pay him. The one you're not
gonna be able to get nothing for him. There's nobody's
gonna be able to trade for a player that's you know,
(01:05:06):
getting three hundred million dollars singularly. Jason Tatum is gonna
be out next season, hars the whole entire season. He
may not come back for maybe a year and a half.
Speaker 1 (01:05:19):
You know, all of these guys that have these torn achilles.
Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
That's an injury that even.
Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
When you come back, you're still not one hundred percent
for another half a year.
Speaker 3 (01:05:30):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:05:30):
So my take is that the Boston Celtics are making
drastic changes.
Speaker 3 (01:05:37):
And you said, no, it's not a blow up.
Speaker 1 (01:05:40):
I say it's a blow up because you're getting rid
of aging talent that have proven production and now you're
getting with guys that have no proven production. What say you,
I'm confused about what they're gonna blow up though, when
you look at their rock. Jason Tatum not going anywhere
(01:06:02):
because he's hurt. Jalen Brown definitely not going anywhere because
he's gonna have to carry the load. Dereck White is
still gonna be there. You have Peyton Pritchard, who is
there the only person that you can actually say that
is gonna probably be moved, will be poor Zingis.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
But you're gonna get something for poor Zingis.
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
So you're not technically gonna blow the thing up because
you don't have.
Speaker 3 (01:06:30):
The current plan is what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
But you still you still have room to work with
because Sam Hauser not a big time player, but another
person that can get what is gonna what's gonna happen
with Al Horford because he's next He's not even on
the roster for next year.
Speaker 3 (01:06:48):
He's already done. So so okay, I thought that they
still had an option. He's not gonna he's not list.
Speaker 1 (01:06:56):
He's not listed on the roster as a player that
will be there as.
Speaker 10 (01:07:00):
I'm as I'm seeing right now on spot track Porzingi's contract.
He only has one year left on it on his deal,
and Simmons, who they just brought in is also an
unrestricted free agent after next season.
Speaker 3 (01:07:12):
Too.
Speaker 10 (01:07:13):
Wow, there if all that money, if they're actually the
only player that I can see them trading if they
was trying to get rid of his contract is actually
Derek White, which has a long term deal.
Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
Everyone else production really great though for what they're paying him,
but everyone else undervalue.
Speaker 10 (01:07:32):
Everyone else that you're mentioning or thought about is expiring
their contract aspiring after the next season.
Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
Yeah, that's next season. But you want to get something
for him at a low low price. You want the
low low price.
Speaker 1 (01:07:47):
And and and getting any Anfrony is a good scorer
and a and a great facilitator. Still Griffin on the
on the squad as somebody that they're still paying.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
He's a cap hole. Yeah. So you know, you look
at it and you're like.
Speaker 8 (01:08:03):
Okay, oh, no way, Blake is off the books too
after this season, after this is it? Yeah, two point
two to almost two point three million dollars he was
getting by sitting at home. And I'm sure that's not
the only team that's playing paying Blake Griffin during that time.
So yeah, I look at it a little bit differently, Mark.
(01:08:25):
And the only reason why I say that is I
think that they're going to have an opportunity to make
some money, make some some deals happen anyway, So as
well as you are looking at this, yes, I do
believe that they are very, very expensive.
Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
They are way over it. As a matter of fact,
I think they're like one hundred and ten million, hundred
ten million. But they're not the worst one. I mean
one hundred and two million. Excuse me, Golden State is
one hundred and eleven million, and look what's going on
with them. Yeah, hey, you brew my point, but the
battom blow is up. I don't think you got to
(01:09:03):
blow it up. I think you gotta spend wisely. And
by spending wisely, there's some contracts that are just gonna
go away anyway. So you don't even have to worry
about that. If you can hold this team together while
Jason Tatum is getting better, hold it together, because at
the end of the day, the teams that are spending
that money they want to win. They want to win.
(01:09:25):
That's why they're spending that money. That's why Golden State
went out and got Jimmy Butler because they thought they
were going to win.
Speaker 3 (01:09:33):
They thought they wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:09:36):
And if Jason Tatum doesn't get hurt, do we look
at this thing a little bit differently. I mean there's
some there's some I understand where you're like, you're looking
at the management side of it, but the management is
looking like I want to win side of it because
when I win, I get more money. And they just
sold for six billion dollars, so they gonna make it.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
Move to win though. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
Coming up next close out the show, send you to
Dan Patrick. The NBA Draft is tomorrow. What is happening
with our guy Trey Johnson? And I want you to
hear from SGA that dude faded right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
No great show today and if you missed any part
(01:10:20):
of the show, get over to our podcast page wherever
you get your podcast, but most importantly get over to
that always free all iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (01:10:31):
Well you got us number one on your freeze sets.
Speaker 1 (01:10:34):
Great interview today with Joe Cook of Inside Texas and
of course another one with Kobe Daniels of Okay see
Fox affiliate up there.
Speaker 3 (01:10:45):
You know Oka.
Speaker 1 (01:10:46):
See he's getting ready for a big time party when
it comes to a championship speaking. Yeah, especially of that
as a champion. SGA has a lot of obligation. Not
only is he a champion champion, he's also the MVP
of the finals. And he was on with Good Morning
(01:11:07):
America and let's just say you don't interview people that
have been celebrating all night long.
Speaker 6 (01:11:15):
Jay, Gilgus, Alexander give it up. All got enough for
joining us this morning?
Speaker 3 (01:11:21):
Oh my good.
Speaker 6 (01:11:22):
How does NBA champion that have a good ring to you?
Speaker 3 (01:11:26):
S g A.
Speaker 1 (01:11:29):
Yeah, that's everything I imagine it to be. Dollortunity has
been amazing and I'm just I'm happy and I'm blessed to.
Speaker 3 (01:11:37):
Be a part of it.
Speaker 6 (01:11:38):
Okay, have you been to sleep? Have you been just
a little sleep? Didn't get any rests since last night?
Speaker 3 (01:11:46):
I got some wrestling, not as much as I like.
But you only live once, that's right.
Speaker 6 (01:11:51):
If you are living your best life right now, I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:11:55):
Don't don't call me. Don't call me. You got some
oblo I am not obligated to do. Not right now,
don call me.
Speaker 2 (01:12:06):
The office called and said, hey, we're going to have
a car outside and we're going to send somebody to
knock on your door at eight am. Well, if he's
in morning studio, it was probably like five.
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
No, he was. He was remote.
Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
He was not there, Okay, yeah, yeah, he was remote
because you know.
Speaker 2 (01:12:25):
Being a guy that had to do those tours, like
go do all the marketing before being champion at WWE. Yeah,
hey when that when the limos got the car service
show up at five am. You gotta be at on
the on the set that's news station at six.
Speaker 3 (01:12:43):
It's not it's not a fun experience.
Speaker 1 (01:12:47):
Which is why you're doing more than radio now right
getting up at five. Yeah, I was preparing.
Speaker 3 (01:12:53):
For my future exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
You were getting yourself prepared and speaking of your future
and being prepared for The NBA Draft kicks off tomorrow night.
We'll have more conversation obviously about it. But Cooper Flagg
is recognized as the number one overall pick. If Dallas
messes that up, I think everybody in Dallas will need
(01:13:15):
to be looking for They will be missing in action.
Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
Did you see that Dallas signed Gafford yesterday for sixty mil. Yeah, yeah,
Like they solidified the fact that a consistent center is
going to be playing that position.
Speaker 1 (01:13:31):
So Anthony Davis is going to be playing power forward,
no doubt.
Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
No doubt.
Speaker 1 (01:13:35):
So, and then you look at what the Spurs are
looking to do. They hold the number two picky. I
know you don't like Dylan Harper going at number two
because there's too many of the same players on that team,
but you'd be crazy to pass him up. And Trey
Johnson has now moved into does the number three spot
(01:13:55):
of the NBA Draft. He was invited to the draft,
so that means that he'll be in the green room.
He and uh uh Ace Bailey was somebody that was
getting a lot of love, but he canceled a lot
of the workouts, which is kind of crazy when you
(01:14:15):
think about what problem. I don't think it was him.
I think it was more of the agents. We're saying
that they're not going to work out. But now they
have him falling to the number six pick to the
Washington Wizards. US is looking and looking at number five
(01:14:36):
to Utah Jazz and the number four pick, I mean yeah,
the number four pick to Charlotte is Baylor guard v
VJ and Comby. So we will see what ends up
happening with that. But we'll have more conversation about the
draft tomorrow because it is expected to be an interesting one.
Let's not forget that the Spurs have the number two
(01:15:00):
and the number fourteen pick. The thunder are sitting at
the number fifteen pick, but they're trying to move up
into the top ten to go get even better.
Speaker 3 (01:15:11):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:15:12):
The Timberwolves who need to get a big man too,
because they tried to trade what's the big guy name?
I just lost it. The one who caused COVID. We're
trying to He didn't cause it, that's just well, he
basically shut down all the COVID.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
He shut down the NBA. We shut down more than
the NBA. He shut Yeah. Him touching those mics just
shut down everything. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
So you start to look around and seeing who's all
involved and who what picks are gonna go where. There's
a lot of guys, but there's only a few guys
from this area that when I say this area, I'm
talking about Trey Johnson and the young man from Baylor
that is expected to go in the top.
Speaker 3 (01:16:04):
I can't wait to talk about this tomorrow. I know
you're excited about it. It's an exciting time. I mean,
lives are going to be changed.
Speaker 1 (01:16:10):
And as you talked about a little while ago, trading
Drew Holiday from the Celtics to Portland is something that
I didn't have on my BINGO card before the trade deadline,
and it is allready happening.
Speaker 3 (01:16:24):
I'm sure there'll be more trades.
Speaker 1 (01:16:26):
There's gonna be more today or tomorrow, just because of
the expected movement in the draft.
Speaker 3 (01:16:33):
Who's going to be first.
Speaker 1 (01:16:34):
We know Cooper Flag, but it's everything after that, whether
inner workings are going to take place, so I can't
wait for it, man, I cannot even What do you.
Speaker 3 (01:16:45):
Think about this?
Speaker 2 (01:16:46):
As as a little teaser, how about the Spurs give
up the number two pick and the number fourteen pick
and a player to be named.
Speaker 3 (01:16:58):
For Giannis and you just trying to get you.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
They want to get they want to Jannis is not
gonna leave with players that right now we look at
as vible commodities. It's gonna be draft capital because Milwaukee
has to rebuild, do they?
Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
They have to?
Speaker 4 (01:17:25):
You?
Speaker 1 (01:17:25):
I mean, you just changing all these organizations lives.
Speaker 3 (01:17:29):
Talking about they all need to rebuild. Hey, I hate
being right. We're gonna see I keep being right.
Speaker 1 (01:17:36):
Wow, put yourself on the shoulders there a big hold on, second,
hold on, let me stretch because you know.
Speaker 3 (01:17:43):
It's I'm tight, no doubt, no doubt. I want to
thank Mark Henry.
Speaker 1 (01:17:47):
I want to thank my guy Marcus, and I want
