Speaker 1 (00:00):

because we only go as far as you let us.
That's right, Folks, tune in and make sure you tell
five friends to tell five friends. The Morning Kickoff seven
(00:22):
to nine am Monday through Friday right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Good morning, Austin, Ktown, Flugerville, Htown, Pairland,
El Paso, San Antonio, and Seals Me, Texas.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Or wherever you may be listening.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
This is a Texas Tuesday edition of The Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. We are
seventeen days away from Texas, the number one team in
the land, taking on Ohio State. Coach Sark recaps the
scrimmage and gives out bright spots. Joe Cook of Inside
(01:02):
Texas and on three joins us at seven thirty four
to talk about what he thought about coach Sart. We
have Texas baseball coach Jim Slosnegel joining us at eight am.
Texas recruiting and something that he is doing with the
Nolan Ryan Foundation to help those that were affected by
(01:23):
the flooding. Also, the NFL came out with their quarterback
rankings and we will discuss and of course the news
that came out yesterday Shador Sanders back to the bottom
of the charts. We'll discuss that as well. I am
your host, Mike Harballharts. My co host is a WWE
Hall of Famer and recognized as the world's strongest man.
(01:45):
He is d Mark Henry. Good morning Austin, and of
course we have Marcus behind the boards. And if you
want to be a part of the show, all you
got to do is texta word Texas followed by your
message to eight one five three zero. Standard data and
message rates may apply. That's the words follow by your
message to eight one five three zero.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Standard data and message rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Also, we're gonna give you a chance to win a
pair of tickets this morning, but you have to have
that new and improved and always free iHeartRadio app. All
you're gonna do is tap that talkback feature, leave a
message and you might get a chance to win a
pair of tickets. But number one put us as number
one on your presets as well well. Mark Texas football
(02:28):
is ranked number one for the first time in the
preseason poll, the AP Poll. And it's an exciting time
because the hype is real. We've been talking about it,
we've been looking forward to it. We think this team
has ascended to a place of happiness and joy for
the fan base. Happy happy joy, happy, happy joy joy.
(02:50):
It's not like it's not warranted. It's not like it's
a gift and not something that they earned. They're two
D minimum at every position and that that warrants you
having a great team. But also look at all of
the all the people that already had.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
The preseason superlegives.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
So like, yeah, I see it. Yeah, that's what it's.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
That's you know, you work hard to get all this,
uh the accolades before the season. But as coach Shark
and you'll hear it in just the moment, talks about
you got to have that at the end of the year.
It's all fun and dandy at the beginning of the year.
It's not where you start, it's where you finish. And
that's what Coach Shark was talking about. But here's Coach
Shark talking about his team's practice as they're starting to
(03:37):
get locked back in and getting closer and closer to
game day.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Our guys just practice our asses off. It was awesome.
So that's that. And he was playing around, WHOA, that
was quick.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, he was.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
He's straight to the point. He's straight to the point.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
But of course the question was, you know, your team
comes in, they're recognized that as the number one team
in the land for the first time in the AP Poll,
as the preseason favorite, and he's asked, how's your how's
your team handling it?
Speaker 3 (04:06):
It really doesn't matter. That's how I drown it out.
I tell the guys exactly that, like, it doesn't matter.
It's irrelevant to the to the way the season is
gonna go. It's irrelevant to the way we're gonna play.
It's irrelevant to how our opponents are gonna play. Maybe
it puts a little bigger bulls eye on us for
our opponents, but the reality is we have to go
do it right.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
We have to perform, and.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
We have to perform at a high level over time
and time and time again, and so and that shouldn't
change whether if we were one, eight, twelve, thirty, should matter, Right,
we got to have to prepare really well, and then
we're gonna have to perform, and we're gonna have to
perform in critical moments. We're gonna have to perform at home,
We're gonna have to perform on the road. We've got
a very challenging schedule that way. That is quite frankly,
(04:51):
it doesn't matter, you know. And you know, again, I
think that expectations around here are always to be champions.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
I mean that that hasn't changed since day one.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
You know.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I think the the heat of the drill is you
like to have a number one next to.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
You at the end of the season, right, And so
the beginning of the season, as I've said before, it's
great for the fans.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
It's great for the exposure of college football.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
It's great for the first game of the year, and
what that matchup looks like, it's great for college football.
I think there's three top ten matchups the first weekend
of college football, Like, what an exciting weekend for our sport.
And so that part's exciting. But I bet you could
ask every coach around the country. They tell you the
exact same thing. The reality is, what are we going
to do? It's not what other people think of us.
(05:30):
It's actually how we need to perform. And that's going
to be the message to the guys.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
And that is the truth. You have to be able
to go out there and perform the hype, as we
talked about, it's real. Obviously, people across the country are
looking at this Texas team, and I'm sure a lot
of that has to do with the Arch Manning effect,
and we'll talk about that in the next segment. But
I also wanted to find out what play What did
(05:56):
you and didn't like about the scrimmage this past Saturday.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
It really doesn't matter. Yeah, that's how I drowned it out.
We have to perform, and we have
(06:25):
to perform at a high level over time and time. Yeah,
the scrimmage, you know, I thought, you know, the first
three drives. We were going ones, twos threes in the scrimmage,
which was a little bit different format than we've used
in the past. You know, Historically we've gone ones and
(06:46):
twos and then when they're done, the threes go, and
then we go ones and twos and then the threes go.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
We were going ones, twos.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Threes, and uh, defensively, all three groups ones twos threes
came out and had a really good first drive. The
second drive, the first offense, the second offense, and the
third offense all had really good drives inside the five,
and then they didn't finish those drives and so that
was a great stand by the defense to hold them there.
(07:12):
Then we went to the next phase of the scrimmage,
which was red zone lockout, and I thought the offense
performed really well and won that period. We came back
after halftime and did a coming out period and the
first the second defense had a nice series, the first
defense struggled a little, and then the third offense had
had a ninety nine yard drive.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
It's a hell of a drive.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
And then we did a two minute drill and both
the first offense and the second offense drove down and
kick game winning field goals. So I like the balance.
I like the competitiveness of the scrimmage. I like the
physicality of the scrimmage. We're playing really physical football on
both sides of the ball. As naturally in a first scrimmage,
it's always gonna be a little bit sloppy, you know,
(07:56):
pre snap penalties things like that. Had we definitely had
to clean up. From an offensive perspective, I love the
way we tackled in the first scrimmage. I think we
had you know, the defensive coaches will tell you we
had fifteen missed tackles, but excuse me, but there were
no really egregious misstackles. A lot of them were in
the line of scrimmage. So I thought we tackled well,
which was encouraging. At the end of the day, you know,
(08:19):
I thought we punted the ball really well. We got
off to a little slow start kicking game, but I
think Mason really stepped up and feel very confident in
what he can do, and he made a couple of
really big kicks for us there at the end. And
then obviously we know we have will you know, kicking
kicking off for so I think we're in good shape
from a from a specialty standpoint that way.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Love it, love it, and they're going to continue to grind,
continue to get after it. He talked about the pre
snap penalties and what they need to do to clean
that up.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
He'll also talk about it a little bit later.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
But one of the biggest things that everybody's trying to
figure out is who are some of the standouts that
you got a chance to see during the scrimmage on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Standout performers, you know, I was.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
I was really pumped about Cedric Baxter Saturday. Uh that
that he fired me up. Man, he ran hard, he
ran physical. That was encouraging. Derek Williams was another guy
I was he had his best day which was day nine.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
And both those.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Guys coming off of those injuries. So those were probably
the two biggest guys that that excited me the most
coming out of There was other guys that highlight plays.
Aaron Butler had a bunch of catches, you know at
the Tanthy Smith that's had a great camp. I mean,
there's a bunch of guys that way, you know. I
think Mrod Watson, Alex January looked really good. I think
(09:37):
we only had two guys didn't finish the scrimmage, and
that was Nick Brooks and and Nick Townsend and both
of them were both practiced all day to day and
were great, So nothing serious.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
You noticed that three of those guys didn't play a
lot last year, were injured last year, and they will
be better in this situation now that this season is
start in January, having a good having a good camp,
and being having a good summer at actually too, so
like you put having good scrimmages together with how he
(10:12):
did this summer and the improvements. I heard he was
squatting near six hundred pounds, so that that's that's a
good summer.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Yeah, And then you know, he said Derrick Williams.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Williams is a guy that they needed to show up
and to have him have a good summer as well,
and then to come in and have a good scrimmage
and that means a lot for this this Longhorned team.
Well that's him coming back from that injury and being
able to rehab and go out there and play at
the level that we expect him to play.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
He was a guy that you know.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Coach Stark talked about the defensive line and the fact
that they didn't have the depth, and so a lot
of guys like uh Collins and Broughton, they had to
play more reps than what they probably should have, right,
so they were tired, Yes, and that's that's the same
thing you could say in the secondary there were some
guys that were banged up that we're going to play
an integral part of the success that Texas was going
(11:08):
to have. I believe that is why so many people
are looking at this Texas football team and believing that
they're going to be a lot better than what they
have because now they have more depth and those key positions.
And then you also look at what Jalen Gilbo, Jelani McCoy,
I mean McDonald, all those guys, Kobe Black, He's talked
about some players that are stepping up, and we still
(11:31):
haven't really.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Dove into that.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Grace and Littlefield, Littleton football player that has been having
a hell of a camp. So we'll continue that and
so much more. We'll continue hearing from coach Sart more
about arch Mania and how he's handled on that Joe
cook up inside Texas at seven point thirty four, and
then we'll close out the hour talking about Ohio State.
(11:55):
Oh Yeah, they're in the top five too, and when
Texas is going to collumb in seventeen days? Right here, Oh,

Speaker 1 (17:23):
This all, we are seventeen days from taking that trip
to Columbus as Texas takes on, you know, Ohio State.
Texas the number one team in the Land preseason poll.
(17:45):
First time in APE history. Texas is a preseason number
one voted on by so many. And of course we've
got Joe Cook of Inside Texas coming up next, so
he will talk about it. But I want to give
out a shop to Kiki Powell of Sunfield Elementary School
in Butta. She is going out of her way to
(18:05):
find the resources she needs to help her students and
colleagues be successful in the classroom. School is about the start,
so we want to make sure that we get all
these kids ready to go and bless them to have
a great, great school year. Be careful, slow down and
look out for them babies out there because they are
(18:25):
getting ready to start the school year.
Speaker 14 (18:28):
Mark.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Yeah, they'll be crossing the streets and you know sometimes
they run in front of the bus. Yeah. You know,
they excited about getting to school and they excited about
getting home. So we need to slow down.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Guys, make sure you pay attention to those schools.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Zone.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Don't be like Shador Sanders and Miles Garrett driving like that.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
What's the problem in Cleveland? Where is everybody trying to get.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
The heck out the way?
Speaker 1 (18:51):
They trying to leave talent as fast as they Wow,
they Cleveland, this is for you. Yeah, they trying to
get up out of there. But seriously, people paying attention
to slow down, Slow down while you're out there because
the schools are about to start. Y'all had all summer
to act a full Now get back and get some
sense about you while you're driving, because the kids are
(19:12):
going on their way to school. Yeah that's true. I
mean we got some famous seventeens too. Jordan Shipley, No,
what was Jordan Shipley? Shipley was the seventeen, wasn't he?
Speaker 2 (19:26):
No? Shipley was eight.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Jordan Whittington, yeah yeah, Jord Winston yeah yeah, Okay, you
have you rustled for a while. Yeah, I got hit
in the hit a lot. But the most famous seventeen
is actually Julius Whittier, who, uh he was a trail Blazer,
was the first African American to play football at.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Univers What's that wasn't he's number sixty seven?
Speaker 1 (19:49):
He was number seventeen. First, really, yes, sir, because that
statue out of the statue had sixty seven, but his
first number was seventeen. Okay, okay, nice, nice, And another
one that had number seventeen, Sharad Harris brother that it
should have had more reps at the University of Texas.
(20:10):
He was one of the coldest ones out there, but
he didn't get a chance to play near as much
as he should have. So another number to pay attention to.
But right now, number sixteen, which we'll talk about tomorrow,
but we're gonna talk about him today. Number sixteen. Arch
Manning and coach Start was asked about how Arch is
handling all the expectations coming into this season, even though
(20:35):
we all understand it's his first start in a regular season.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
I don't know if I have necessarily expectations, you know,
I think I think when we visited with Arch coming
out of Saturday, there was probably five or six plays
that I'm very confident he's gonna make as we move forward.
You know that Saturday was what our ninth practice of
fall camp and be like essentially a preseason game, playing
the Hall of Fame game, right, So to think that
(21:02):
we're a fine tuned machine and that and and that
practice probably not realistic. But he came out today and
had a great practice and so again that work in progress.
He didn't do anything like catastrophically bad, but I just
know what he's capable of, and so we just got
to keep, you know, tightening the screws to make sure
that that he's performing the way he's you know, he's
(21:23):
capable of performing. And I think part of that is
physically and part of that is mentally the leadership that
he provides to the guys around him to allow them
to help him play the way that he's capable of playing.
No ha, no turnover Saturday for him at all. I
think there was one turnovers on a tipball in the
red area. Actually that the defense made a nice play
during the red zone period.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yeah, defense making plays. I like that they're going to
continue to make plays. And as we heard last week
from Malik Muhammad when he was talking about how Arch
will come to him and why were you playing this
type of defense? Make what did you see from me
and vice versus? They're helping each other out. So we
all know that it's happened since the beginning of time.
(22:07):
You're going against each other the entire time. You're gonna
know each other's play, the route, you're gonna know the setup.
That's great, that is outstanding. But now what are you
gonna do to improvise and make some different plays? And
arch Manning learning progressing, going through it third year in
the system. But now coach Sark is changing some of
(22:28):
the things that he has to do as well, because
you got a different type of quarterback. You have a
guy that's not afraid to take some risks and throw
it down the field. You got a guy that believes
in his arm enough that he'll try to force it
into an area. And if you're going to make these mistakes,
make them in practice. Yeah, I mean, you want to
make your mistakes in practice. I heard some yesterday that
(22:51):
just made my heart swell. It's the fact that they
have a couple of time in plays that are designed
to for comebacks, and out of the five times that
they ran those comeback plays, arch completed all five of
the comeback plays. And and that's consistency because you expect
at least one to be overthrown, underthrown, or somebody drop
(23:15):
one or whatever. Five and five. Yeah, come on, man,
that's that's that's the that's consistency at the highest level.
And he was also asked about the arch Mania situation
and and where everybody's mindset is and how's everybody handling.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
I don't know the truth. I don't know like I
don't I don't really know yet. What I know is
what I see every day.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
And he seems good to me, you know, and we
visit a fair amount to make sure that what frame
of mind is he in where I think he performs
the best.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
You know, there's a there's this it is going to
be a long season.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
And unfortunately we live in a world of he's the
greatest ever or he's going to be a bust and
there's not a lot of like in between. And it's
kind of like where we are as a team. We're
either going to be national champs or we're going to
be a bust. Like that's the mentality outside.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Of our building.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
We don't really think that way. I don't think Arch
thinks that way. I think Arch thinks about what am
I doing today to improve? What am I doing today
to be the best teammate I can be? When the
game weeks roll around, what am I doing to prepare
to put myself in the best position to perform. I
just don't think he's that concerned. No offense to you
guys with what you guys write and say. It just
I don't think it matters to him.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
I really don't.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
I think it's more about what do his teammates think
about him, and that's a cool thing to have and
so but I don't know yet because we really haven't
gotten into the fire as much as the hooplaws happened,
we really haven't gotten into the fire of real games
and dealing with that in game, postgame, next week's game,
so on and.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
So forth, with really dealing with the media that way.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Yeah, it's gonna be an interesting take from week to
week because of the questions that are going to be
asked by the media. Quinn never really gave you too much.
And if you go back and listen to the interview
that I had with arch Manning, and I'm sure that
a lot of you can get over to our podcast
page and find that in on all of our social medias,
(25:13):
because we are the home of your Texas Longhorn. He
mentioned the fact that he hung out and spent a
lot of time talking to Quinn about how to deal
with the media in these particular moments. So there's going
to be some times where we're not going to get
a lot from Arch, but there will be some times
too where we get a whole lot from Arch because
(25:34):
you're the quarterback of the University of Texas and heavy
as the crowd that is being worn. They also they
get media training. Yeah, like that's one of the things
that we did with the younger talent at NXT when
I was with WW. Well back with WW, but they
go through media training courses how to deal with questions,
(25:56):
what are the media trying to get out of you?
And always be on the defense, right always, even though
you may it may be somebody that's interviewing you that
has interviewed you before, but sometimes people get like a
little they won't go with a hair and they just
(26:16):
want to get something out of you, right, and you
have to be prepared for no doubt. And one of
the last things that he was asked about was his
ability to coach Arch and compare them to Jake Locker.
Jake Locker running quarterback was able to move around, but
Arch is a little bit different because Arch is a
better passer Yeah, he's really good.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
I mean Jake was.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
I mean he was a really good runner. I mean
he that was probably his strength and that was what
they really used him as when before I got to Washington,
we kind of evolved him into the passer that I
think he became, but utilized his legs and he had
some big time runs for us that were critical. Arch
definitely provides something different that way for us, And I
(27:00):
think Matt and kJ do two. You know, but I
don't think any all three of those guys, only any
of them are majoring and running the ball.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
But I do think it adds a dimension to our
offense that you have.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
It requires you to defend, and hopefully that opens some
other aspects of our offense up a little bit more.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
And it's going to be important because he didn't mention
Trey well.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
And the other part of it is you got to
make sure you get down fly fly, that's Mark's favorite.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Coming up, we got our guy Joe.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
Cook of Inside Texas and on three talking about what
he saw or heard from the UH scrimmage and what
his expectations are are as we are seventeen days away
from Texas and Ohio State to kick off the season
right here on the morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff
(27:54):
right here on sports radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
It is a Texas Tuesday, a day of the morning kickoff.
And what better way to keep this party rolling then
going to get our guy, Joe Cook of Inside Texas
and on three. All you got to do is follow
him at Joseph Cook eighty nine on social media and Joe,
(28:15):
let's get right into a seventeen days away from the
number one team in the land preseason pop of AP
Texas Longhorns traveling to Columbus to take on the Ohio
State buck Guys. And yesterday, coach Shark was asked about
the preseason ranking and he says, it doesn't matter what
(28:36):
happens at the beginning of the year.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
It only matters what happens at the end.
Speaker 6 (28:41):
Yeah. I see where he's coming from and talking about
with that with his team, and you know, I think
what he does pretty well is to say, like, you
know what, I'm going to address it, talk about it,
not going to try to ignore it, but just move on.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
You know.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
It's just kind of a piece of news it's like
some so and so making a watch list. So I
think it's fun.
Speaker 6 (29:00):
I'm upset at some of the AP voters for not
giving us one versus two in a week one, but
I guess we'll have to roll with the coaches and
say that. But one versus three is still a big game.
But I think what it does is, you know, even
if Stark wants to try to, you know, maybe not
emphasize the polls or anything like that, it does let
the team go like, hey, if you didn't already know
(29:21):
this before, you still got a big time test coming
up in just over two weeks.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Yeah, Joe, does it really matter though it whether it's
one or two, one of three, one of five, Like
it's a top five matchup and everybody that loves college
football is going to be watching that game.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Yeah, I don't think it matters a whole lot.
Speaker 6 (29:41):
I mean, I like the one versus two idea, especially
a little symmetry nineteen years later from Ohio State coming
to Austin Ranke number one.
Speaker 2 (29:50):
I believe in Texas number two, so it'd have been
nice to see that.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
But no, it doesn't.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
I do think that there is a little almost over
discounting of the p maybe because the people in that
College Football Playoff Committee are human and you know, I
know the BCS tried to use computers, but they also
use human polls, and they're going to look and see like, oh,
this team is ranked number ten right now, and so
maybe that'll be where I put them in my poll. Like,
(30:17):
I think it does matter a little bit, even though
it doesn't have a direct influence. I don't think you
can just say that there is no indirect influence from
the polls with how the College Football Playoff works.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Joe, don't you think that it's pretty impressive to go
against this University of Texas defense in a game, in
a scrimmage and you complete five or five of comeback
routes against a team that everybody thinks maybe the best defensive.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Unit that text has ever produced.
Speaker 6 (30:50):
Yeah, I mean, I think what that does is it
shows that Art and the rest of the quarterbacks they can.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
They can figure out where to find some yardage.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
You know, I'm sure on those comeback routes anything about
Stark's offense or some other options down the field, but
for them to be able to complete those types of passes,
maybe it means that's all the defense was given them.
Maybe that means that's the only place they could find
a hole in the defense. And you know, if that's
the case, that means that defense is pretty solid across
the board. So you know, it's it's the weird part
(31:20):
of the camp where there's a give and take, and
you know, for one to give, one has to take,
and so on and so forth.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
One side somebody's got to win. It's football.
Speaker 6 (31:29):
But for the Longhorn offense to be a step behind
doesn't sound like it concerns anybody in the coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
But they're still making plays too.
Speaker 6 (31:37):
That's the completely They're not getting completely shut down. They're
still making some plays. You know, they Texas still gave
up some big plays some yards last year, but never
made it a debilitating loss or a debilitating play.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
So kind of the right amount of news from camp.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
I feel like, well, I need to correct myself. It's
eighteen days. It's not seventeen days. I jumped the gun.
I'm a little fast. I jumped the gun trigger. So
it's eighteen days away.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Stanley Richard baby.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
From Texas and Ohio State. But I do want to
ask you this because obviously Ryan Wingo is getting a
lot of love, as expected, but you also have DeAndre
Moore and of course Parker living Stone as he is
starting to emerge a lot from this Texas football team.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Do you see any other guys?
Speaker 1 (32:28):
I know McCutcheon has been doing really good and he's
had his name called out.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
A couple times, But what are you looking for in
that secondary?
Speaker 1 (32:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (32:40):
I think I want to know what's going on with
them at Moseley.
Speaker 6 (32:43):
It sounds like he had to sit out this most
recent scrimmage and that's someone that they brought into, you know,
be a top four player, a competitive starter. And then
I want to know if if somebody can join that
for it sounds like of Wingo, more Livingston and in
mos you know, can it be Aaron Butler, Can it
be Daily McCutcheon, Can it be Kalik Lockett? We heard
(33:05):
Kalik Lockett had some reps with the first team, and
you know you can hear, Oh he had reps with
the first team, means he's the first team. Or it
could have just been like three or four plays, but
it does even those three or four plays is a
little bit of trust from the coaches to be willing
and able to run with the ones and do what's necessary.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
So we'll see.
Speaker 6 (33:23):
I think we're going to find out a lot in
those three weeks after the Ohio State game, just to
see who they play and who they rotate through. But
that Ohio State game, it's going to show us also
who maybe some of the younger players are that they
trust to.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Be in that top Usually top four is about where
they cut it off.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
We're talking to Joe Cook of Inside Texas and on three.
You can follow them at Joseph Cook eighty nine on
social media. And one of the other things too, Joe,
that I continue to want to talk about is that
defensive line. That defensive line continues to have different guys
step up. When Coach Start mentioned it the other day,
(34:00):
he was saying how tough of the time it was
to move the ball. They did get some good running
plays from CJ. Baxter.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
But what are your expectations on that D line?
Speaker 6 (34:12):
Yeah, I'm not sure if there's gonna be a transcendent
talent like there has been in the past couple of years.
I think Alfred Collins was almost to that point. Of course,
he did have sweat and Murphy. I think Cobra and
and Ojamo weren't individually there, but you know as a
group they were really good. I don't know if you're
gonna have one transcendent guy one to all American guy,
but I think you're gonna have probably about three or
(34:33):
four different guys where you can trust to be really good,
and maybe even five or six.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
And there are some teams that only have one, even
in this league.
Speaker 6 (34:41):
So if you have that level of depth to where
maybe it's not excellent, but they're all up to like
a certain standard, that's something that you know other teams
don't have for the course of sixty minutes and you
know sixty five plays something like that, that can be a.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Real advantage of it. And so it does become transcendent.
Speaker 6 (35:00):
Well, you figure out who that guy is, you make
sure he's rested as best he can be over the
course of the game, and then you know, when it's
crunch time and fourth and one, you put him out
there knowing that he's been able to not rest but
to buy his energy as best he can for the
end of the game.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
Joe, if you got three guys that weigh three point fifty,
that makes that offensive line have to really really work,
and they're not going to be as good in the
fourth quarter as they are in the first second quarters. No,
not at all.
Speaker 6 (35:33):
I mean, it's it's kind of hockey shifts, is the
thing we've been saying for what it could look like.
You know, you ring the first line out, you bring
the second line out, you bring the third line out,
and then you cycle through again, and you know, I
don't know if there's a penalty kill or anything like that,
but maybe that's the third down. Maybe that's the third
down package. Throw some different looks out there. But I mean,
(35:53):
if you have three guys who you can trust to
go all right, you have five snaps, give it your all,
and you do that about five times a game, that's
a little bit different than seeing like, all right, you're
on the field for this fifteen play drive.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Go have at it, buddy, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
There is Joe Cook of Inside Texas and on three
make sure you follow them at Joseph Cook eighty nine.
As always, Joe, we thank you for taking the time
and we'll talk to share Man. Absolutely. Thank you. Guys.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
There is Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
When we come back, we're gonna talk about Ohio state
and some of the names that you need to pay
attention to.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
And did you know that Texas is a two and
a half point dog? What I thought they were number
one in the nation.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
We'll talk about it right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone thanks to
our guy Joe Cook of Inside Texas breaking it down
like no other. Coming up at the top of the hour,
and we'll have Texas baseball coach Jim Slopsnagel breaking down
his recruitment, what's going on this summer. And he's also
(36:59):
doing something with the Nolan Ryan Foundation that is helping
some folks in the Texas hill Country and he's gonna
let you know how you can help as well. Right now,
I want to get back into the Texas Longhorns and
give you a few names that you need to know
along the way. Obviously, the Texas Longhorns are traveling to
(37:20):
Ohio State and the number one freak of the week
is Jeremiah Smith. Jeremiah Smith, the freshman now sophomore, is
one of the freakiest players in college football.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
As an athlete.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
We saw what he was able to do last season,
but truth be told, Texas held him in check last
year one reception in the game against the Texas Longhorns.
Longhorns did what they were needing to do, bracketed him
John Day Barrin went from side to side. We also
heard from from Jalen Gilbo and what they were able
(37:58):
to do. So the challenge is going to be just
that again. Another one is linebacker Sonny Styles. Sunny Styles.
He's one of those guys that was on the freakish list,
athletic as all get out. He will be somebody to
be paying attention to as well. And you cannot forget
(38:18):
about Caleb Downs, the top prospect on the defense in
next year's draft, defensive safety that came in from Alabama.
Mark he has always been able to be that guy
that can come down in the box, he can cover
the tight end. He's also physical at the point of contact.
He's a special type of player. He'll be a top
(38:39):
fifteen draft pick too. Yes. So like anytime you get
a guy that's able to do what you just said,
not only covered in the intermediate part of the feel
and deep in the cover two, but could come up
and cover tight ends and play the flats, that's the
guy who's going to get drafted in top fifteen because
of versatility, not to mention he's just fast, he's strong
(39:03):
for his size, He's got real good movement. Like he
was one of those guys that was the highest recruited
guy in college in high school football that year. Yeah,
he actually tried to play. They were going to find
a way to get him to play when he came
to Alabama because he was doing so well when he
came in at the halfway point to be able to
(39:23):
work out, and I was like, what is how is
that even possible? But you know Nick Saban, he knows
how to bend the rules and find a way to
get to that point. So we'll see what ends up happening.
But like I said, you start to look at this
list and understand that when they talk about athletes that
are special, Texas is going to see him right off
(39:45):
the bat at the very beginning of the season. And
I know that they can't wait. But you don't play
to somebody else's you make them play to yours. Yeah,
and Texas is a team on both sides of the ball,
on all three phases that have special players. So I'm
I mean, it's it's mono ly Mino like you, you
(40:06):
should give us your best, will give you hours see
what happens. Well, right now, I want to give you
an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to go
see Breaking Benjamin and three days Grace, We're giving away
tickets to the Moody Center September the third, and the
keyword of the day is animal. All you have to
do is get over to the iHeartRadio app, go search
for AM thirteen hundred the zone, tap that red microphone
(40:30):
and then leave the keyword animal for a chance to
win a pair of tickets to go see Breaking Benjamin
in three days Grace. I want to say, breaking bad,
so bad, don't you?
Speaker 4 (40:42):
I do?
Speaker 1 (40:42):
I do, But I'm breaking Benjamin. I'm looking at it,
so I'm going through what I saw. So make sure
that you're tuned in this afternoon with Craig Way and
Cam Parker on The Craig Way Show, as you will
hear more from Coach Sark.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Coach Sark is doing the Yesterday was media for Coach Sark.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
He got a chance to talk about the team, understanding
that they're the number one team in the land, but
not buying into the hype too much because although Texas
is the number one team in the land. They're going
to Columbus as an underdog two and a half point underdog,
and so for them to go in there.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Two and a half, but most whole teams get three points.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Most times you get three points automatically, that showed your
cousin told you, No, that's just the rules of the game.
That's the rules of the game. From the game that
I played before. If you could get three points, that's
that's basically a push in most situations. So Texas being
(41:50):
a two and a half point dog, I don't like.
Like everything else, you don't look too much into it
because people still don't know what each team is going
to be like. The expectations obviously are huge for both
teams because one pole has them at one and two.
Then another pole, the ap pole, has them at one
(42:12):
in three. So and it's not going to be the
same game as we saw last year. It's a totally
different for both of these teams. And as the expectations
continue to roll in, you know as well as I do,
Texas is looking at this whole thing a little bit
different than what they had before.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
We heard about Coach start thinking we got more of
a running game with.
Speaker 1 (42:37):
Arch Manning, because Quinn wasn't a guy that was going
to run the football, still not running it in the NFL,
didn't look to move early in the pocket. But you
look at what you've seen from Arch and his past.
The one thing that we will continue to monitor is
how quick Arch pulls the ball down. Is he going
(42:57):
to feel a little bit of pressure and just automatically
think take off or is he gonna buy some time
to kind of see what is developing down the field
because the scrambled drill is going to be the scramble drill, right,
So it's those moments of being able to play and
get a feel and understand what everything is all about.
(43:19):
And this is your opinion, a question for you, and
I want your honest opinion. Do you script a drive
or do you play it by ear and give arch
man arch Manning the option to run a pass early? Well,
this is gonna be scripted because Sark always scripts his
(43:39):
plays early and get to that what is a first
fifteen maybe and see but again, as a play caller,
you see certain things right away and you can adjust. Yeah,
you can be scripted, but sometimes I think he's gonna
give him the chance to audible out of things. He's
been in the system for three years, so he pretty
much knows everything about the system. So I think that
(44:03):
he's gonna be okay. I'm not too worried about what
Arch is going to do at this moment. As he said,
we're still eighteen days away from this happening, so I
think he's gonna be just fine. Coming up next, we're
gonna talk to the Texas baseball coach Jim Slosnagel about
(44:23):
all things Texas baseball expectations and what he and the
Nolan Ryan Foundation are doing to raise money along with
a couple other schools as well the challenges out there, folks,
Let's make Texas handle their business right here on the
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Welcome back to a Texas Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (44:46):
Edition of The Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. We had an opportunity to
talk about coach Sharp meeting with the media yesterday as
the number one team in the preseason ap pole. We
also heard from Joe Cook of Inside Texas, and we
also broke down Jeremiah Smith, Sonny styles and Caleb Downs
(45:09):
of the Ohio State Buck. Guys, we are eighteen days
away from Texas and Ohio State, but it's always good
to be joined by the head coach of the Texas
Longhorns baseball team, a team that was SEC regular season champs,
and he just continues to find a way to get
(45:30):
this thing rolling.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
Coach Jim Slosnagel, Coach, how you doing.
Speaker 14 (45:34):
I'm doing well, guys. Hope you've had a great summer.
Good to see it. Good talk with you, no.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
Doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (45:38):
Always love chopping it up with you, especially when it's
time to talk baseball. And we'll get into what you
and the Nolan Ryan Foundation are doing to help some
folks in the Texas Hill Country. But I wanted to
ask about now that all of the dust has settled,
the teams have changed a little bit. You had some
guys sound signed their major league contracts. What does coach
(46:01):
Slasnagal do now?
Speaker 14 (46:04):
Uh, Yeah, we've been hard at work. The summer is
a real peak recruiting time. First, you know, right after
the season ended, that was about three or four or
five weeks of recruiting the portal and trying to fill
in some places and trying to figure out, you know,
who's gonna stay off our team, who's going to come
in off our team, how the draft's can affect that.
(46:27):
So once we got through the draft and we kind
of had to scramble to fill a few spots that
we're a little unexpected in some losses.
Speaker 5 (46:36):
And now we've moved on to planning out the fault
visits for.
Speaker 14 (46:40):
The twenty twenty seven class, which is rising juniors. I
just got off the road. I was in California, but
we're all back in town.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
Now.
Speaker 14 (46:49):
We're gonna have a little coach's retreat for a couple
of days outside of town and plan out our entire
year and get ready for fall practice and start putting
together a team again.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
You were last time we talked. We've talked about your
pitching corps and you said you wanted to improve and
get some left handers, like were you able to accomplish
that into Portum.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
We did.
Speaker 14 (47:14):
We got we got three really good ones. One of
them happened to get he actually moved here, but he
got drafted way higher than expected and got a bonus
you know that he felt comfortable with.
Speaker 5 (47:25):
So we lost that one, but we got two really.
Speaker 14 (47:27):
Good left He's a guy named Cal Higgins out of
Western Kentucky who was one of the best relievers in
the country last year. And a kidnamed Hayden laflu la
Few from Wake Forest, really good arm, big fastball. So
those guys are going to be important for us along
with We really kept most of our key freshman high
(47:49):
school signees on the mound in the draft, so really
like a lot of those guys at least right out
of the gate. But yeah, those two transfers are going
to play.
Speaker 5 (47:58):
A big role.
Speaker 14 (47:59):
Especially you know, we're gonna look at Dylan Valanist more
than likely as.
Speaker 5 (48:04):
A starting pitcher at least in fall practice and see
how see what that looks like.
Speaker 14 (48:09):
You know, we want to be able to help him
accomplish his personal goals, but we also got to take
into account what's best for the team.
Speaker 5 (48:16):
So we'll see, we'll see how that fall goes and
see what that looks like.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Coach Sark always said that there's a guy of guys
that are good, but they don't necessarily fit the system.
Like in your system, do you do you make an
emphasis on kids that will make the program look good,
not just on the field.
Speaker 14 (48:39):
Yeah, I mean we yeah, we obviously we believe great
people make great players, right, It's not the other way around.
So you try to do as best you can in
your research and visiting with people and people you trust
over the course of time that direct players your way.
So we feel really good about the character of the guys.
You know, they're they're young people. They're they're going to
(48:59):
screw up every now and then, but for the most part,
these guys are you know, especially get a guy like
Cal Higgins who's he's been in college four or five years,
he's engaged, super mature. So having guys like that around
help elevate your teams.
Speaker 1 (49:15):
We're talking to the Texas head baseball coach Jim Slasnagel
going over the passing what's happening and recruiting, And I
wanted to ask you this because you brought up Dylan
Valantis and I remember when you presented him with the
Freshman of the Year and he said, I was looking
at that wall and I was looking for a place
(49:35):
to put my name on that wall. That's kind of
one of those things that you were talking about with
the personal goals and seeing what fits best for him.
Speaker 14 (49:45):
Yeah, you know, I think every pitcher desires to be
a great starting pitcher, and I.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
Mean I'm not going to stand in the way of that.
I mean, you know, I do believe that. You know,
it's changed a lot.
Speaker 14 (49:58):
Is just like you know, our game in the SEC
somewhat reflects what goes on in the big leagues. I
think the average start in the SEC last year was
about four and a third four and two thirds innings.
So the players are so talented, there's so much information,
and the bullpens are good, so win in doubt you
bring a fresh pitcher in. But uh, you know, losing
(50:19):
Jared Spencer's a big loss for us. Getting back Ruger
Luke and Max Is those were the three biggest recruits honestly.
So we do return about eighty percent of our innings,
but it would be nice to develop as super elite
you know, Friday Night starter, which at the University of
Texas you should have at least one. And so we
(50:40):
think Dylan can do that. And you know, we'll give
a look this fall and into the spring and see
what happens.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
Before we talk about the fundraiser that you're doing. You
got a couple of them. Actually that's going on right now.
But I wanted to ask you about the leadership part
of it because obviously losing Jalen Flores, Galbond and a
couple other guys that were integral parts of the success
and helping you keep that foundation, what's next in that
pipeline as far as leaders.
Speaker 14 (51:10):
Yeah, that's a great question, and there's no doubt there's
a vacuum there.
Speaker 5 (51:13):
When you lose.
Speaker 14 (51:15):
You don't just use leaders, you use epic leaders. You
use some of the most elite leadership type guys. And
Kimball Schusler and and Galvan and Flores and and Ballou you.
Speaker 5 (51:27):
Know those guys who are super elite.
Speaker 14 (51:29):
I'm not worried about it on the on the pitching
side because because we return you know, you know guys
like Luke and Max and and Thomas Burns is really
good at that.
Speaker 5 (51:41):
But you but as you know, Mike is a former player.
Speaker 8 (51:43):
You know.
Speaker 14 (51:44):
It's the pitchers are like kickers, you know, they're they're
kind of off doing their own thing most of the time, right,
So we need somebody within the We need some a
group of guys within the position player group. But I
think I think we have some really good candidates there.
And I also think some of the guys we have
incoming are capable of it. There's nothing to say that
once one of these transfers comes in and earns their
(52:05):
stripes and handles things the right way, that they can't
do that. Troy Klaunch did that for me or for
us at Texas A and M my first year, and
so I think that some of those guys that are
capable doing that. So we'll be hard at work at that.
And that's my job is to develop, is to develop
character and leadership through the sport of baseball. And so
we'll be ready.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
No, I have no doubt about that. So tell everybody
what you have going on right now to with the
Nolan Ryan Foundation, as you guys are putting together this
challenge for some schools across the state of Texas to
kind of raise some money for those that were affected
by the Texas floods.
Speaker 14 (52:42):
Yeah, So basically what we're doing is some youth baseball
fields in and around the Hill country over there. It's
just like everything else just got completely washed away and
these kids have nowhere to play. I got an email
this summer from some people over in the gram area
near kerr In near Kerrville in the in the.
Speaker 5 (53:03):
Hill country, and they were looking for some help.
Speaker 14 (53:06):
I was just trying to think of different ways we
could use the power of Texas and then the other
great programs in the state of the State of Texas
and UH and then started working with the Nolan Ryan Foundation.
Uhryce Reed and Wendy Ryan, Nolan Ryan's children all went
to TCU.
Speaker 1 (53:24):
UH.
Speaker 14 (53:24):
So I've known that family really well for a long time,
and I'm a big believer in what they do.
Speaker 5 (53:29):
So we're kind of partnering up with them. We have
a website.
Speaker 14 (53:33):
If people just google the Nolan Ryan Foundation, you know,
you can find the link and and and I know
you've already posted it on your social media stuff.
Speaker 5 (53:42):
And I just felt like it.
Speaker 14 (53:43):
Would be cool to have the Longhorns challenge the Aggies
and the Frogs and bears and utsa Texas State, Texas Tech,
I mean, any school DBU and just let's have baseball
fans across the state of Texas. If you can ship
in five bucks one hundred to five thousand, you know,
we're trying to We're trying to raise one hundred thousand bucks,
(54:04):
which is gonna go into the Kiddy of what's probably
gonna be close to about a two million dollar project,
and some Major League teams like the Red Sox and
Padres are helping out with that along with along.
Speaker 5 (54:16):
With some other organizations.
Speaker 14 (54:18):
So just need everybody to help chip in, and certainly
we'd like to have the Longhorn fans win that contest,
no doubt.
Speaker 1 (54:25):
I've already posted in I'm gonna post a link on
AM thirteen hundred the Zone. Mark Henry's gonna post some
stuff on his social media as well, So we're gonna
definitely do our part with that coach before we let
you go. Texas football, obviously is right around the corner.
You were talking about the retreat that you and your
staff is gonna go on. What is it like when
(54:47):
all of you coaches get together on the bigger stage
with coach Chris del Conti and you start to see
some of this stuff come to fruition.
Speaker 14 (54:59):
Are you talking about the flag department? Yeah, I actually
have a head coaches meeting at noon today. I went
to football practice on Saturday and watched I'm a huge
fan of all of our sports, but I'm actually a
psychotic college football fan. If we don't have a home
game or recruiting or something like that going on. I'm
(55:22):
up for college game Day. I'm watching games from eleven
am until whoever Hawaii played.
Speaker 5 (55:29):
That's what I'm watching. So I love college football.
Speaker 14 (55:35):
I just love everything about it, and obviously with Jonah
Williams on the team, even more of an interest.
Speaker 5 (55:41):
And so I got to see Jonah.
Speaker 14 (55:43):
I hope he can get healthy soon and get out
there and help the guys. And I'm also going up
to the Shoe. I've never been to Columbus, Ohio, so
I'm a run up there. Had some nice donors asked
me to ride with them, So I'm gonna run up there,
see the game, and hopefully come back with the Longhorn victory.
Speaker 2 (56:01):
I like that coach Ken ken Hard, and I get
on that work bro, I have to work.
Speaker 1 (56:08):
Yeah. Yeah, man, I want to get on the git.
Speaker 5 (56:11):
Yeah we got yeah, I mean that's uh yeah, I
got invited. I'm not sure how many seats there are.
You got some big boys over there.
Speaker 1 (56:19):
We may have to sit on the opposite size of
the planes and balance it out, balance it out for you.
Speaker 5 (56:24):
Yeah, You're gonna have to balance it out.
Speaker 1 (56:26):
And no and no baggage back up and back. That's
all we need. Well, I appreciate you, and we'll post
this as soon as possible to make sure that we
get the people to help with what you guys are
doing to help those baseball fields.
Speaker 2 (56:41):
As always, we appreciate you and thank you for taking
the time today.
Speaker 5 (56:45):
You got it, fellas, have a good day, all all.
Speaker 1 (56:47):
Right, I appreciate you. There he is coach Jim slas
Nagel breaking it down. When we come back, we'll talk
NFL quarterback.
Speaker 2 (56:55):
Tears are out. Who do you agree with and who
do you disagree with?
Speaker 1 (56:59):
Right here on the morning kickoff All Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone, great interview with coach Jase Slosnegel
giving us the state of the union when it comes
to Texas baseball and also what they are doing to
help raise money for those affected by the floods in
the Texas Hill Country, in particular baseball kids so they
(57:21):
can get a chance to play. I wanted to get
into this conversation about the tiers of the quarterback leading
into the twenty twenty five season. The panel was combined
of forty six top tier votes for Lamar Jackson. Now,
how does this all break down? It is evaluated with
(57:43):
key players, front offices, teams, franchised, and so much more.
It also gives you the names of certain players that
you look at and you say, Okay, how good is
this guy? What number is this guy? And who are
the tier one, two and three guys in the quarterback
upper echelont. Obviously, Patrick Mahomes continues to be the top
(58:09):
of the food chain, followed by Joe Burrow, Josh Allen,
Lamar Jackson, and they have Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford up
to the top five, top five quarterback top tier over
Jaen dnis hold on number two, Tier two, Jaden Daniels
(58:29):
that guy again, Justin Herbert, Jared Goff, c J Stroud,
Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Dak Prescott, Jordan Love and Brock
Purty round out Tier two. So that's the top fourteen
quarterbacks coming in a tier three Kyler Murray, Aaron Rodgers
(58:50):
steal in that top tier three two attack of a
lower Trevor lawnch Geno Smith, Bow, Nick, Sam Darnold, Derek May,
Caleb William, Bryce Young and.
Speaker 2 (59:02):
Kirk Cousins over Stroud.
Speaker 1 (59:06):
Did you say Stroud yet? Stroud isn't there, but Kirk
Cousins finishes out the top twenty five and Michael Pennis
is the starter.
Speaker 2 (59:14):
That's where he's start to look a little crazy.
Speaker 1 (59:17):
Tier four, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Michael Pennis Junior, j jamieccarthy,
Daniel Jones, Joe Flacco, Anthony Richardson and Spencer Radler bogus.
All of it kill the whole list, except for the
first tier, Okay, because if you put Anthony Richardson on
(59:41):
your list the whole you need to throw all of
it out. He should not be a quarterback in the NFL.
I don't care what that dude right there is. He's
not hot garbage. He's an unbelievable athlete. He's got an
incredible arm. He could throw a D ball. Everything outside
of the D ball he can't do.
Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:00:01):
There's only thirty two quarterbacks in the league.
Speaker 2 (01:00:03):
He has to be somewhere. Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:00:07):
There's a lot of guys on the bench better than him.
That's well.
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
Can he be considered a backup quarterback?
Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
You're talking about just getting the board learn how to
play the game. Well, they have two guys from the
same team that is in this tier, and that's Daniel
Jones they have at number thirty and they have Anthony
Richardson at thirty two, so they're not far from each
other in the eyes of these people that are making
these judgments. Joe Flacco being there, he's he's been around
(01:00:36):
the league, so he's got I guess he's got street cred,
so they're gonna keep him in there.
Speaker 2 (01:00:40):
I don't like the fact that Michael Pennix.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
Is below Kirk Cousins because now he is the starting
quarterback for his team. I like Bryce Young over Caleb
Williams right now because Caleb Williams, although his upside seems
to be amazing, he's not shown to be amazing. So
I've seen the struggles of Bryce Young, and I saw
Bryce Young come back.
Speaker 2 (01:01:03):
From his struggles.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
Let me see Caleb Williams come back from his struggles
to get ahead of him. I don't disagree with Drake
may and what his potential is gonna be. Sam Darnold
jumped up the farthest because of what he was able
to do last year in Minnesota. Now he's the starting
quarterback for Seattle and he's tied for twenty with bow Knicks.
(01:01:26):
Bo Knicks has been very impressive so far. And he's
a mature quarterback because he's twenty five years old, so
he's already passed some of those thresholds at least in age.
And he has a good coach with him in Champagne.
I'm not a Sean Payton fan, but people understand that
Sean Payton, when he gets the right quarterback, can do
(01:01:47):
some amazing things to a attack of aloa if he
can stop getting hurt. But is he a top seventeen guy.
Aaron Rodgers's strictly on history. Well, I heard Tomlin talked
about Aaron Rodgers and it is exactly what you and
I said yesterday. Can he manage a game? Sometimes veteran
(01:02:09):
players need to be taught and that's what this is
what Tomlin said. Veteran players need to be taught to
manage a game and to play within the framework of
a game plan, rather than going by the physical abilities
that they showed in years past. Aaron Rodgers has never
(01:02:31):
had a season where he threw more interceptions or as
many interceptions as he did the previous year. Only three
times in his career did he throw over fifteen interceptions
in a season. He's five hundred touchdowns to one hundred
(01:02:51):
and like thirty interceptions. So he's he said that that's
not an issue. He needs to be taught how to play.
And where is Tomlin the strongest in teaching players?
Speaker 2 (01:03:05):
But he has never had a strong.
Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
I'm never I'm not I'm not being an advocate for
I'm just saying Tomlin feels like he can train Aaron Rodgers.
You cannot train the old dogs and teach them new tricks,
especially one that we don't find out articles all the
time they got it, they haven't and trying to figure
(01:03:29):
that out, but well you shall see they haven't. And
I want to see what tom If Tomlin can't do it,
then maybe this is not the ownership. Remember I thought
he was the ownership setting him up. But if he
believes that his ability is so blindly that I can
train Aaron Rodgers, he's worse, it's worth not mine, then
(01:03:53):
maybe he should be fired.
Speaker 2 (01:03:56):
He going down with the ship.
Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
Oh yeah, he going down on the top. He hit.
He hits both wagons, his home wagon and his professional
wagon to Aaron Rodgers. Well, in that two tier, I
mean in that second tier, you got Jayden Daniels justin
Herbert Jared Golf, C J. Stroud, Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield,
(01:04:18):
Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, and Brock Party. I think you
should probably flip Dak Prescott and Jordan Love and have
Brock Party and Dak Prescott by each other. I think
I think that Baker Mayfield has shown Dak's biggest problem
is he's gotta stay healthy. Dak has to stay They
have to stay healthy. If Dak is going to go
(01:04:41):
back to that runner up of the MVP, if it
doesn't happen this year, then there's gonna be some issues.
Every year that Dak has been hurt. The next year
he comes back, he kills Yep, yep.
Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
I just think that he's seventeen pounds lighter this year.
Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
Well, he might need to be seventeen pounds heavier because
they're gonna be hitting him. And I don't think so.
I think that he's smart enough to realize let's see
the lamb and pickings and uh Ferguson, Ferguson handled the ball,
get it out your hand man, Well that's gonna be
all shot. I don't study long, because if you're study long,
(01:05:21):
your study wrong. Well, we're gonna hope that they get
this thing figured out. And as always, you start looking
at some of these numbers and things will change throughout
the process. You know, Matthew Stafford sitting at number five,
he hadn't even practiced, like his back is still jacked up,
and that is affected me, and that is affecting my
(01:05:44):
pick for the season, as I'm not picking him anyway. Well,
I picked him to win the West. I picked the
dolls to pick the West, so we'll look into that
as well.
Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
But coming up next, we've.
Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
Got the World's Strongest Man bringing you his world strong
take right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred the ZAR.
Speaker 2 (01:06:06):
You heard him say it, that's what he do.
Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
W W Hall of Famer and the World's Strongest Man,
Dee Mark Henry brings you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Take it away, big fellow, Marge, what up?
Speaker 1 (01:06:21):
You know what time it is?
Speaker 6 (01:06:22):
What time is it?
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man back Marcus. Back then they didn't know me.
Now I'm hot, say all on me, guys, this is
(01:06:46):
this is Normally I take the side of the player.
Very rare do I take a side and ownership. But
it hurts me to say this. I have to take
the side and ownership. Cam Hayward, son of Craig Ironhead Hayward,
(01:07:09):
one of my favorite New Orleans Saints players. His son
is a huge, giant, All Pro defensive tackle in the NFL.
And with that being said, him being a All Pro,
(01:07:30):
I have some sound. Uh Marcus hit that hit that sound.
Speaker 15 (01:07:34):
It's hard for me to, you know, having a after
the year, I've had to really justify playing at the
number on playing at You know, I understand I signed
the contract last year to be but to be completely
honest with you, when I signed that, I told him,
you know, when I have an All Pro year, expecting
me to come back and people look at the contract
(01:07:57):
and see what it was. But I think everybody kind
of giggled a little bit. But in my heads, I
used it as a motivation about that quiver.
Speaker 1 (01:08:07):
They didn't giggle at the fact that he said that
we'll revisit this because they thought that he couldn't do it.
They giggled because you already signed the deal. It's not
what you get, is what you negotiate if you sign
(01:08:28):
the deal. Keep it real. Cam Haywood signed a contract
in the middle of the road at the time when
he made All Pro. He is right now getting paid
thirty three the He's the thirty third highest paid defensive tackle.
(01:08:53):
He's a top five, top six defensive tackle. He signed
that deal last season. He signed the last season. If
you feel that good about your abilities, put escalators in
the contract. Hey, look, if I make All Pro, my
(01:09:13):
salary need to go up five million. Hey, guys, if
I get X amount of sacks, I need X amount
of dollars per sack.
Speaker 2 (01:09:24):
Something anything.
Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
It's what you negotiate. You can't. They laughed ass off.
I'm telling you when he said, hey, we're gonna revisit
this contract if I make All Pro. Yeah, I would
have laughed at him too. Hey, brother, you already signed
a deal. So if you sign the contract, guys, live
(01:09:48):
out your contract. Respect the fact that your word means something.
Don't revisit it later on when you exceed your deal.
As hard as what say you, I'm a little confused
on this mark because you did say, hey, I am
going to I'm going to side with the coaching staff
(01:10:08):
this time the management, which is fair, which is very
very fair. But I also look at the fact too
that he told you going into it, this is what
I plan on doing after you signed the deal. After
he signed, he still said it. It don't matter if
you say it you go to the court of log
(01:10:30):
what are they gonna ask what's on the paper? What's
on the paper?
Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
Yeap, but sometimes that paper.
Speaker 1 (01:10:38):
We were going through the same thing with the word
right now with Jerry Jones and Michael Parsons.
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
You gave me your word that this is what it
was gonna be. He gave it.
Speaker 1 (01:10:47):
Jerry Jones is a hustler, and so as Hayward.
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
So is Hayward. Hayward told you what it was gonna be.
Speaker 1 (01:10:55):
That's why Jerry Jones don't want to deal with the lawyers,
because the lawyers are gonna do this.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Mister Jones, can we put that on paper?
Speaker 1 (01:11:04):
Very fair, But the fact of the matter is to
your point, that's how they felt about it when he
said it.
Speaker 7 (01:11:09):
Ha ha ha.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
He said, yeah, get luck.
Speaker 1 (01:11:14):
As what They was laughing, laugh if you want to,
because I'm not showing up, I'm not participating. I'm not well. See,
they're gonna find him like three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
These guys get their phones written off. You know that
as well as our do I do give it right back.
They find a way to make that money back in
something else. But the he the way that the team
(01:11:37):
reacted is the same way he reacted when I sat
here and told you, I'm gonna sign this deal with you.
But know that after I go back and I have
one hell of a year, I'm coming back and I
want more.
Speaker 16 (01:11:54):
Not how it works, I'm not work, but actually that's
how it's all always worked. In the NFL. Guys sit
out and for more money. Our teams cut you if
you don't performs. It's a two way street.
Speaker 1 (01:12:07):
Yeah, because if you're not performing, they got the right
to let you go. But if I do perform, I
can't ask for no more money. Oh you're supposed to
do that. That's what we hid over that fifteen million.
Because NFL contract is not is worth than the work.
NFL contract is worth toilet paper. It's basically non guarantee,
(01:12:29):
so you could change it up at any time. So
for him to art, I just believe I'm not disagreeing
with you just because I'm disagreeing with you, because there
is some room to wiggle because we we're all on
our last days of playing in the NFL, right like
(01:12:49):
you're on your last day of wrestling. I was on
my last days of baseball. I needed to get as
much as I possibly could, as quick as I could,
so when I do walk away, I'm even better than
what I was because I can't shake it like I
used to.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
I can run, I can hit it, I just can't run.
Speaker 1 (01:13:13):
I'm not fingna run like brother Rivera Rivera that this
tourist Marion Ariano Rivera the old folks game, the old
Now he's sitting.
Speaker 2 (01:13:26):
In a rocking chair with his leg up and he
ain'tven heard it pitching. That's the worst point. He was
playing right field.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
Why why was he out there anyway?
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
Because I'm an athlete, I said, pictures are athletes. I'm
a right film.
Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
I think it was close to the pin and he
was like, I'm gonna just jump over the wall and no, no,
it was time for you to go shut it down,
like I put, like I posted that meme yesterday down. So,
oh my gosh, man, I'll tell you what hard. I
truly believe that these guys got to do a better
(01:14:02):
job with these contracts and maybe the structure the Players
Association needs to allow a section in a contract. This
guy is a star player that had an off season.
If he reaches this amount in stats, he should be
elevated to top five percent. True, so that fixes everything.
(01:14:27):
Give them the Patrick Ewan deal. But they're not going
to do. The teams are looking at ways to not
pay you.
Speaker 2 (01:14:32):
I know, I know, that's why they That's why they
laughed at Sad.
Speaker 1 (01:14:38):
Another great take by the world's strongest man. When we
come back, we'll close out the show and send you
to Damn Patrick. Two special stories that just happen to
be from h Town, and we'll talk about it right
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
A great show today on the morning Kickoff.
Speaker 1 (01:14:56):
As we continue to roll on eighteen days away from
Texas and Ohio State, you can always listen to the
games here right here on your home for Texas Athletics
and Texas Football. Sports Radio A thirteen hundred The Zone
and always free on that iHeart Radio app. Make sure
you download that app, put us number one as your preset,
(01:15:19):
and put our podcast Case Smiths City of parts of
the show as number two on the list You missed
an interview with Joseph Cook of Inside Texas Joe Cook
and of course coach slasonego as he is raising money
for the Texas Hill Country as they lost their baseball
(01:15:40):
fields and a lot of those places and the kids
didn't have a place to play. So he's raising money
being honorable that into the kiddy for them to build
those fields.
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Back mark last night, two.
Speaker 1 (01:15:53):
Things happened in age time, well what happened before, but
two things happened that were so important. Number one, Alex
Bregman returned as a Boston Red song and they gave
him a stand in ovation. It was an exciting time
and all he did was hit a home run his
first second that back. All the cheers was gone and
(01:16:16):
they was booing his behind as he walked up to
the play.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
But one of the biggest things that happened.
Speaker 1 (01:16:22):
Is the prodigal son returned to ahe town and those
fans could not be happy enough. Yea, it has been
introduced in four years as an a. Carlos Korea returned
(01:17:03):
back to H Town for the first time since being
traded to the Minnesota Twins came back home and the
Astros get the victory. But it was a good homecoming
for Alex Bregman as he got the home run, and
of course Carlos Korea being recognized by H Town coming
back and playing third base. And I saw an interview
(01:17:25):
with him and he said, what was the biggest part
about you wanting to come back? And he was said,
I get to spend time with Jose Altuve. Jose al
Tuve is one of my best friends in this game.
He's not only a great baseball player, but he's one
of the nicest human beings you would ever want to
be around.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
We talk life, we talk our struggles, and he's always.
Speaker 1 (01:17:50):
Been there for me. So now I get to hang
out with my best friend every single day now. So
brotherhood is so important in sports, big time. Especially that
samey of the locker room is something that you can
never ever ever replace because we still talk about it
to this day. I still talk to some of my
(01:18:10):
former teammates almost every day. I talk to my guys
that I grew up with every day. So you can
never ever replace that. And so it's good that those
two in Age Town as they start to chase another
pennant to go out there and do it together. You know,
they're gonna be old guys one day like the movie life, yep,
(01:18:32):
and they're gonna sit there on the porch like me.
And you always talk about man, the check engine light
is on exact and stuff. And if you don't have
somebody that you can reference that life with, yep, it
makes it feel like you were a stranger to everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:18:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:18:48):
That's a good, good stuff and I'm glad to it.
One thing that also happened in Hetown is Matthew Golden.
Matthew Golden, Texas got a chance to really embrace him
last year. He played his way into a first round
draft grade and becoming a first round pick, the first
(01:19:09):
first round pick wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers
since two thousand and two. Two thousand and two was
the last time that the Packers drafted a wide receiver
in the first round in Matthew Golden, and Matthew Golden
decided to turn his nine point four million dollar signing
(01:19:29):
bonus to gift to his grandmother. His grandmother had lost
her home and Matthew Golden went out and as part
of his journey in the NFL, he decided that he
was going to buy his grandmother's house back for her,
and that's exactly what he was able to do. You know,
(01:19:50):
a lot of people play for so many different reasons.
A lot of people have so many different wives. And
for Matthew Golden, his grandmother who was the biggest MP
supiration for him. He was able to go back and
purchase her old home for her so she can be
back in her house in her neighborhood.
Speaker 2 (01:20:09):
Bro.
Speaker 1 (01:20:09):
Incredible. I told you I wouldn't be mean without my grandmother.
And I had the conversation with my daughter yesterday about motivation.
I was like, your motivation, wasn't my motivation? Like we
were poor, we worried about how much we could eat. Yep.
I was like, I don't apologize for your life, but
I hope that when I'm old, you treat me like
(01:20:32):
I treated my mother and my grandmother. And for you
to come in today and tell me this, I told
you it was emotional. Yeah, And I said that. I said, man, look,
this is one of those moments in life. Like I said,
so many people have so many different wives. And you
know what's the first thing, HOI mom?
Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
Hey, touch down, hey mom.
Speaker 1 (01:20:56):
But a lot of people have granny and grandma and
those people that helped raise you when your mama and
daddy was on you or mama and daddy had to work.
Where you're gonna go? You going to grandmos, grandmo. Yeah,
I'm going to my grandmother's house. And both of my grandmothers.
Speaker 6 (01:21:13):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:21:14):
We spent a lot of time with both of them.
Well we call them June Street and sugar Loaf because
one was in June Street, one was over by sugar Loaf.
So it is a grand grandparents are important and that's
why me being a grandfather now yea the triple O
G O G of the hargest. Now I'm excited about
(01:21:35):
what can happen with my grandkids, and I hope that
they look at me that way as well. I'm a
lot older than some of these other grandparents. I'll be
I'll be in that wheelchair going to theay events by.
Speaker 2 (01:21:46):
The time I'm in a house too.
Speaker 16 (01:21:49):
I'm gonna add in the fact that the reason why
I'm a huge sports fan is because of my grandmother.
My grandmother took me to high school football games, all
of football games Houston gamp. I'm a big football fan
because my grandmother just loves football.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
Yeah, and that seems to be what happened with Matthew Golden.
Speaker 1 (01:22:06):
You know, you always got to have somebody in your corner,
and it seems like, you know, we have our ancillary friends,
we have our circle of trust that we're all in,
but the ain't nothing like our grandparents love in what
they do for everybody. I know that my kids are
fortunate enough to have the grandparents that they have because
they are all in, from top to bottom, from all
(01:22:28):
over the place. So Kim Poppy were talking about it.
Speaker 2 (01:22:31):
I think Poppy and nanty know, and of course my
mom knows as well.
Speaker 1 (01:22:35):
I want to thank Mark Henry, I want to thank Marcus,
and I want to thank everybody for tuning in. We
are going to be better. Tomorrow we'll have more from
Coach Shark. We'll also have more from the NFL as
we get closer and closer. We didn't get a chance
to talk about the situation with Shador Sanders coming in
number fourth on the depth chart.
Speaker 2 (01:22:56):
I want to get your thoughts and we'll continue.
Speaker 1 (01:22:57):
To learn the school.
Speaker 2 (01:22:58):
Happy birthday, of course, Coach.
Speaker 1 (01:23:00):
Slowsne go, Happy birthday, and my brother enjoy and just
remember this. Don't believe everything you see, because even salt
looks like sugar, have a great one. Peace,
