of tickets to go see Alice Koopa and Judas Priest,
all you got to do is use that talkback feature
on the new and improved iHeartRadio app and you'll get
a chance to win them, and we'll give you the
keyword of today. Oh my goodness, I want to get
(02:01):
into this because we talked about it yesterday. OTAs are
in full effect right now. Twenty four teams went to
camp yesterday. Aaron Rodgers is saying all of the right things,
and he admitted that he did get married. He didn't
expand on the conversation, but Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen all
(02:22):
got married during the off season, and maybe that is
why he did not want to go to camp because
he was still getting ready for his honeymoon. But he
signed in time, came in and he addressed the team
yesterday and basically told them, I'm all in now that
I'm here, let's get to work.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
And so that's good.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
But TJ. Watt it is not there. He is trying
to hold out for a new deal. Obviously, Miles Garrett
is the big name that got paid this off season.
By the way, Miles Garrett was asked about Aaron Rodgers
and he said, I just all that. Does we play
him twice? I get to put him in the graveyard,
(03:04):
so he's ready. And if you saw the video of
Miles Garrett, he looks like he's putting a lot of
people in the graveyard. So it'll be an interesting time.
You got that laying, Yeah, he looked real scrowng TJ.
Wide is out, Trey Hendrickson is out as well. He's
(03:25):
another defensive end that is looking for a new deal.
But let's just say this, the Cincinnati Bengals, I think
we've all in agree that they are not run well.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
You want to hear you want to hear what Cincinnati
Bengals are really really saying.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
What I ain't got it, man? Yeah, well I don't
have it. They do have it, they don't want to
spend it. That's why they were selling TVs and trying
to do things like that when.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
They were embarrass it is Think about that, that's absolutely embarrassed.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Think about that they were trying to sell TV to
try to get money.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
For the TVs that they were replacing. You know this,
We talked about.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
That, and it is utterly ridiculous that this organization.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Is nickeling diamond like that when it's such a writer.
Every year, every year, every season, they get between sixty
and eighty million dollars every franchise. Yeah, you mean to
tell me that you are so poorly run, are so
(04:35):
cheap that you can't pull thirty million of that and
pay your best player somebody you need, you need it
in that division, in that division.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
You got to be able to get to the quarterback
and put them on the ground.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
I just you know, like I can see why people
won't sign with Cincinnati until they get their mone because
it's like waiting on a bounce check. Yeah, Like, why
would you they need to strip that franchise of the ownership.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Well, and they can do it if they want to.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Well their number one pick Shamar Stewart, frum Her, Texas
A and m fighting Aggie. He spoke yesterday because he
is waiting for his deal to be signed, because Cincinnati
is just going to Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Like some people say, we all agree train will be right, right,
but technically still one percent wrong for being on the contract.
So and in my case, I'm one hundred percent right,
so it should be a no brainer. And in trace case,
I think it should be a no brainer too. I mean,
he led seventeen and a half sax and two for
(05:47):
two years back the back. If I was a GM
or I was the owner, take all my money.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
But I guess they don't offer you like that.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
But this is a poorly run franchise, so bad that
the reason why Shamar Stewart has signed his contract is
because they tried to throw something in there that they
have never thrown into a contract. If Pat McAfee talked
about this yesterday.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
We had a correct the story Shamar Stewart. We said
his agent must be a super genius. It's kind of
slotted in there. What are we doing you're the seventeenth
overall pick. The CBA has this thing pro Football Talks,
Mike Florio has reported as previously explained, So I guess
he has done this before. Not enough people saw it,
and that is what he's saying. The Bengals have decided
to wedge a new clause into Shehdar Stewart's deal. The
(06:38):
clause would turn a default in any given year into
a void of all remaining guarantees in prior Bengals contracts,
and void wiped out only the guarantee for the year
in which the default occurred. Stewart refuses to be the
guinea pig for the new term, and the Bengals refused
to blake. As a result, Shamar Stewart will be less
prepared for training camp than he would have been.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Okay, so the Bengals are doing Still, I respected that.
Speaker 6 (07:00):
Agent.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I'm not gonna be the first one.
Speaker 5 (07:01):
What are you How am I supposed to tell he's
also a young agent?
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, so I'm a young agent. I'm supposed to just
tell us.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Yeah, for the first time ever, we're ringing us out.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
No way. Why are the Pangs doing this? They're the worst?
Heki Shamar in the agent. We apologize for not doing
that before.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Florio tried to tell us, I mean it is amazing
to me that you are trying to slip in a
language in the contract to try to be the first
one of all time in any franchise.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Well, we're gonna we're gonna try this on you.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
No, you're not. And the CBA should jump into this, right.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I was just about to say, where's the CBA.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
They they I'm thinking they're about to hop in there
because they get that collective bargaining money.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yes, they get that sixty to eighty million dollars off
the off the jump. So nobody's unfolded a chair, opened,
a door, pulled the window shade down or nothing.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
You get the money.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, and you can't pay this due dude, that's ridiculous, man,
God Lee Bingles, Yeah, do.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
The right thing.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Well, remember Joe Burrow even said it himself, He's like this,
can this be a distraction? Absolutely? Yes, it's going to
be just like last year when they didn't want to play.
They didn't want to pay Jamar Chase or Higgins.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Higgins and Chase was the number one wide receiver in
the NFL at the time, right, think he had the
triple crown last year, Yes, he did.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
I think he had the triple crowd last year. So
I mean, I don't, no, don't know what you mean,
you don't know?
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Yes, It just it just doesn't make any sense to
me that every year we have to deal the.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Story is about holdouts.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
And the reason why we're talking about holdouts is because
of this organization in the way they run things and
the chili suck. Remember remember Carson Palmer quit football to
get away from them, to get away from Cincinnati because
they didn't want to pay their franchise quarterback the money
(09:09):
to get there.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
What are we doing here, guys?
Speaker 1 (09:12):
It's obvious they are not They are not serious. And
the thing about it is they got great players. They
have incredible great players. You just mentioned it, Jamar Chase,
Joe Burrow, Higgins, Higgins, I mean Hendrickson. And then you
just drafted your future and you try to throw in
(09:36):
a clause in the contract that makes you wonder, like,
what what are you doing?
Speaker 7 (09:43):
What?
Speaker 1 (09:44):
When does being embarrassed? It doesn't When you're rich, it
don't matter. They're rich.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
That's why they maybe that's why they stay rich.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
That's why exactly they don't want to spend it. And
as you said, the value of the franchise continues to
you get more money every year.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
You're getting money. Could could they get.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
To the point hard where a player goes and with
the sixteenth pick and Cincinnati nah no, kinda nah, don't
don't draft.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Would you say a minute ago, I ain't got it,
I ain't got it, I ain't got the time to
go over there and play for that squad.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
That's ridiculous. It's getting to that point Cincinnati drafts me.
I'm not going I mean, that's that could happen in
our lifetime.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
But you look at it, like he said, like Schamart Stewart.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Said, He's like, if I'm the GM, I'm looking at
this and saying, we have to pay this guy. We
have to play Trey Hendrickson. He's the ultimate weapon that
we have. And then you look at you drafted me, right,
Why you draft me if you don't want to pay it?
Speaker 3 (10:56):
And then you're gonna give me a clause.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
And the clause basically says all guarantees are wiped out
if they void the contract, like or if you get injured, like,
they can all the guaranteed and escalators are gone right forever,
right like, not just for the season. They're trying to
make it where this dude don't get paid period.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Huh huh.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yeah, where they do that at that ain't happen here exactly.
We are just getting started here on the Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Coming up next,
the Houston Texans CJ showing up the camping they had
to have the practice.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
My man is doing this thing.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
We'll talk all about it Danny Davis of the Austin
American Statesman at seven thirty, and we'll finish out the
hour talking Texas baseball all right here on a way
back Wednesday edition of the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio
and thirteen The Zoon, Mike Harbohard's World's Strongest Man, WWE
Hall of Famer, d Mark Henry, and of course are.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Guy Marcus on the boards.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Make sure you continue to tune in to the show,
as I'm going to give you an opportunity to win
a pair of tickets to go see Alice Cooper and
Judas Priest October to twenty fifth at the Moody Center.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
So you don't want to miss that, but.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I want to go to Htown Htown with the get
down your spot, Marcus, your area of town, then talk
a little bit about the Houston Texans. The Houston Texans
have started OTAs and you know as well as I do.
This is where everybody believes their team is going to
the super Bowl. They believe that they got the pieces
(12:47):
for it, and you know that you got the quarterback,
and the quarterback just happens to be CJ.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Stroud.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
We did a get over to our social media page
on Am thirteen hundred. We posted the other day Mark's
tech was believing that the Houston Texans did everything they
needed to do to be a team of opportunity. They
got a chance to make something happen. But you can't
do that without your quarterback. And your quarterback was running
(13:15):
for his life and now he had to deal with
a solder shoulder injury from what we were told, oh
shoulder for tig.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
But CJ was like, no, dog, I'm fine.
Speaker 8 (13:26):
Yeah, I mean, I'm I was already fine, you know
before I think y'all don't have us to talk about.
Everything is going up season. So I'm fine, man, I'm
really okayful.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Yeah, CJ. Let you know that he's doing just fine.
He's doing okay.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
But now also you start to think about, okay, what
what else is going on? And Demiko had to answer
all those questions, and he was like, yeah, you knew
he was gonna throw.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Oh CJ threw today, right, all right?
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Just see he was making fun of the people because
everybody believed that something was wrong with CJ and that
he it was gonna be a lingering issue. And like
CJ said, hey man, y'all just think that I wasn't throwing,
Like how do you think my shoulder got tired? Basically
in his mind is like I've been working out the
entire time.
Speaker 9 (14:21):
In other words, it's easy to sum it up when
you just talk about practice.
Speaker 10 (14:26):
We sitting in here, I supposed to be the franchise player,
and we in here talking about practice.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
Yeah, we talk about practice, but you got a practice
in other people's eyes.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
But CJ and Demiico, they got a great relationship.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
And CJ.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Demico talked about CJ and that dog in him because
he really was gonna make.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Sure that he got out there to practice. Yeah. CJ's
a competitor.
Speaker 11 (14:53):
And last week CJ he was adamant about going out
and practicing. It just showed the type of person that
CJ is like he's but for me because it's important
for me to just make sure we're protecting him, making
sure we're.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Doing what's best for CJ.
Speaker 11 (15:08):
And not really a word about the outside opinions or
other people. Nobody knows the information about our players more
than me, and so I'm gonna make sure I always
do what's in the best interest of our players first
and foremost with their health and wellness. That's always on
the forefront of my mind. And so that's why the
decision was made about CJ. I think you guys saw
(15:28):
him out throwing the day. I think he looked pretty fine.
To me, Hey, coach said it. I know what I'm doing. Yeah,
that's why they pay me that big bucks. Is that
why they pay him the big bucks? So you can
know what they're doing. But the Houston Texans are a
team that is going to get a lot of love,
(15:50):
a lot of upside. We talked about CJ.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Stroud and his ability to be in the MVP conversation.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
They went out and got them some weapons.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Uh. Nico Collins has emerged as one of the top
wide receivers in the game. He's definitely a leader on
that football team. But CJ knew that he had to
change some things about himself and drop some weight.
Speaker 12 (16:16):
Be more intentional about it, so have more fluidy in
my hips, lose a couple of pounds, run faster, and
I got all those done. I think I hit I
pr almost everything this off season, which has been really.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Dope, you know.
Speaker 12 (16:29):
So you know, shout out to Mike Clant. Clint's been
with me every day and you know he does a
lot of he well he had a track background, but
you know his bodying and done a lot of things
with us since quarterback. So I'm very very grateful that,
you know, we got these things done. But now it's
all time and you know this this off season will
be you know, very important on getting back with my
thrown regiment and for my guys in LA. So you know,
(16:51):
I got those things done and I'm grateful for it.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Wow. Dedication, man, I love it.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Man, that off season training and getting yourself in peak
physical condition to go out and perform at a high level,
which is what you're supposed to do as a profession.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
But right that is what is expected of you in
those particular moments. But you start to think about this team,
and we talked a lot about the leadership.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
We've been talking leadership. You look at what happened in Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
We've seen how it can it can fail you, but
you also have an opportunity to think about what's next.
How do we get better? And I think they addressed
a lot of those needs. You touched on those the
other day in your take, But you also look at
okay it are the main characters practicing what they preach?
(17:46):
Are the main people that are are going to lead
us making some lifestyle changes, doing some things differently. I
saw a video of CJ throwing and he looks sharp,
the balls coming out of his hands easily. You look
at some of the new players. They got to get
Higgins and Noel figured out what their role is going
(18:09):
to be on this team. But then you go out
and you get a Nick Chubb to compliment what you
have in Joe mixing and think about how hard Joe
Mixon runs. And then you add in another rhinoceros to
come through there with those big old quads trying to
trying to stop that in Nick Chubb, and.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
You know what competition does, right.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Yeah, competition, fuse each other, fuse the fire.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Joe Mixon don't want Chubb to come in and be
number one, right, So he's on his thing. If he
if he wasn't on that iPad studying, he is now,
if he wasn't really finishing drills and and going through
the playbook the way that he should, he is now
(19:01):
Like he's gonna be locked in and this is gonna
be one of the best running back tandems in the NFL.
Speaker 9 (19:07):
The whole thing is is they just want to pound,
pound pound you until you know.
Speaker 10 (19:12):
And they brought in my mind that if you just
run through somebody's face, a lot of people ain't gonna
be able to take that over and over and over
and over and over and over and over and over
and over and over and over and over and over
and over and over again.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
They just and that's the Texans offense mixture.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Yeah, with this offensive line that they brought in, these
guys are better adapt to run blocking. Yeah, and of
course you're gonna have to be able to pass protect.
But when you bring in three guys that were considered
the best run blockers in the free agent market and
one from the draft.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
You're you're you're ahead of the curve.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Yeah, and that's going to open up their passing well.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
And the thing about it is the effectiveness of the
passing game. When it comes to CJ. Stroud, he doesn't
always want to be looking deep down the field. He's
more of a timing guy, and if you you know,
he takes his.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Shots down there. But if the problem was they weren't.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
Being able to get the ball out of his hand
quick enough, And that's why I go back to it.
Slovan was supposed to be the guy, the next in
line of all those offensive quote unquote gurus that were
out there, and it just fell off so bad that
they had to make a change. And that was going
(20:44):
to be the only question that I was going to
have when it came to c J. Stroud in this office.
I was all for whatever needed to be done. But
my question was, if CJ is hurt and he's not
in camp, how is he learning the new offense and
what this new offensive coordinator was trying to implement.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
That was gonna be the only question that I was
gonna have.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
But there is no question obviously he's been around, He's
been fine, He's been doing everything that he needs to do.
He just wasn't doing it for the Cados.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
To see what that You was all for Slavic being ousted,
but the coach for the Knicks.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
They are not the same. They are not even close
to being the same, not even close. But I see
where you're going with it. But try another one, broh,
Try another one. Find something else, Find something else. Coming
up next, we're gonna continue the conversations with Danny Davis
of the Austin American Statesman. We'll talk Texas Longhorns baseball, football,
(21:54):
and of course now basketball started practice and kind of
like what Sean Miller is trying to build on the
forty acres right here on a way back wins the
edition of the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio thirteen hundred
The Zone. It's that time, folks, It's that time for
us to talk to our guy, Danny Davis of the
Austin American states Mean, you.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
Can follow them at Underscore.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Danny Davis and Danny we'll talk Texas basketball in just
a minute, but I have to go to Texas softball.
Texas softball wins the national championship their eighth try, and
they finally get it done and I know you don't
cover the beat anymore, but you have covered Texas softball for.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
A long long time.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
And how sweet was it to watch those ladies go
through what they did, Mia Scott becoming a legend. And
I thought you posted no one that should ever wear
the number ten in softball again.
Speaker 6 (22:55):
Yeah, I mean, excuse me.
Speaker 7 (22:56):
I think if you're a long time softball sandwich, definitely
there are a handful of those are on campus. I mean,
this is just kind of thirty years of you know,
near missus long waits. You saw kat Ashman never never
win one. He saw Janatid Jefferson never win one. He
saw you know, some Texas teams get pretty close Blair
Luna that never win one and just.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
Not be able to close it.
Speaker 7 (23:17):
And finally this team, it may not have been, you know,
the most talented Texas the team that they've sent to
Oklahoma City. I was definitely kind of surprised.
Speaker 6 (23:25):
That they went on this run, but they this is the.
Speaker 7 (23:28):
Right mixture of timely hit pitching and they.
Speaker 13 (23:32):
Got it done.
Speaker 7 (23:33):
And obviously, you know, Mia Scott just had a postseason
to remember, you know, all ten leader and runs All
ten leader and RBIs avert Texas and just kind of
following that number ten.
Speaker 6 (23:43):
If you look at Vince so I was just it's.
Speaker 7 (23:44):
Retired off with baseball too. It'll probably eventually be retired
with the soccer program because of what Lexi did for
that soccer team. And I think softball, you know, and
that Texas has these standards, and maybe.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
It doesn't meet those because she's never National Player of
the Year, but what she met for that team leadership.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
Wise and defensive wise and offensive wise, I think it'd
be hard press ever. If anyone does wear that number
ten again, good luck to you, because that's a big
footsteps to follow.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Yeah, no doubt about it. I mean to watch her
and the calmness. We had coach Mike White on yesterday
and we were talking about how just how calm she
always looked no matter the situation, how quick and reactive
she was on those balls that were hit towards her
(24:33):
and made it look so easy all what they torn
ACL no ACL and still being able to play and
move laterally is something that should never ever be forgotten
here on the forty Acres.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
No doubt.
Speaker 7 (24:50):
I mean, obviously ACL story, I would have loved it.
MEA talked a little bit more so you'd get a
little bit more context on that injury and kind of
what she was going through and kind of, you know,
what she had to overcome on that nan and get
a little bit more clarity on that. But obviously this,
you know, her legend, it's gonna.
Speaker 6 (25:08):
Be hard to you know, surpass that. That's the standard.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
Now.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
Obviously, what Taken did in the circle, it's not quite
cat yet, but that's definitely a well be as far
as what you want from a Texas pitcher. But I
think definitely MEA's kind of set the standard for protected
position players and the ACL story just kind of adds
to that and adds to her legend, and that's something
that no one is ever gonna be able to take
tack with her and all the all the best of her,
(25:34):
she kind of goes forward and lose on this next
stage in her life and she says she's not gonna
play professionally anymore. So we'll kind of see what's up
next with her. But obviously what a way to go out.
You can't really do much better than did how she
went out.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
We're talking Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. You
can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny Obviously,
football is on the mind so many people. We talked,
We've talked about arch Manning at nauseum, but Texas is
done all across America, maybe all across America. But I
(26:12):
wanted to ask you your thoughts on who do you
see that could possibly make a bigger impact this year
from what they did last year on this Texas football team.
Speaker 7 (26:26):
I mean, so we just talked about everybody as we'll
talk about mister Mia Scott, I mean c J. Baxter
coming out to knee injury last season. Obviously this run
game is gonna be a question with Jaden Blue no
longer there. But you have Contravian Weisner, you have Jack Gibson.
You know, uh, tre Trey had a great season last year,
kind of first on the scene scene in Jeric you know,
(26:47):
he kind of you know, comes out to that freshman year.
Speaker 6 (26:50):
But C. J.
Speaker 7 (26:50):
Baxter was the guy we expected to be kind of
the lead rusher last year before he got hurt. So
you know, how does he look, how does he fit
in with his offense? He had this three headed monster.
You know, maybe there's another couple of guys to step
in with Christian Clark and coming up his injury or
some of these freshmen. I'm really curious about what what
TJ does coming back from his injury. And then obfoicely,
(27:12):
you're gonna have questions in that receiver room with you know,
all those you know guys no longer there, Matthew Golden,
gonna helm from Isaia Bonds, Ryan Wingo, Magadge stab with
DeAndre Moredo since you kind of had a limited limited
spring coming coming back as his uh, you know, after
a pretty decent year last year, I'm kind of stepping
in as a starter and finding his role. So then
(27:33):
there's definitely offensive questions that this team has when we
talked about the offensive line, But CG. Bax is my
big question going into the into the season.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Danny, in your professional opinion with uh, C J Bax
are actually being healthy?
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (27:47):
This year, a lot of people said that Quatavian Wisner
is better suited for coach stark system.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
What's your opinion on that.
Speaker 7 (27:59):
I don't know if anyone's better student. I mean, these
are both guys that you know, Steve recruited to be
in his system, So I think They're both suited just
fine to be be Texas running backs. I think both
are talented. TJ obviously came here with with more accolades
and showed a lot during his freshman year. Trey had
his a breakout campaign last year. I think Steve is
smart enough to figure out a way to incorporate both
(28:21):
those guys into the offense and figure out way to
use both of them. Obviously they use Countravian and Jayden
figured a way to use both of them last year.
I think they combined about two thousand Russian yards, So
I think I think they're going to find a way
that makes DJ and print Travian co exists. It's a
matter of maybe who's getting getting more more touches, but
I think both running back since they were both recruited
(28:43):
to Texas by Steve, or both Steve Sarkis and running
back Danny.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
We go to the hard wood and Texas men's basketball
has started their practices.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
There's some videos out.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
All the transfers obviously are in, some of the retaining
players have been able to get started, and then they
made the announcement that Texas will play Duke November the
fourth at the Dicky V uh tournament. What were your
thoughts on What is your thoughts on this Texas basketball team.
Speaker 7 (29:18):
Well, as you know, Urge, I covered the basketball team
over there that wins.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
I don't only know much about the want the basketball program.
Speaker 7 (29:23):
But obviously, you know, coming in with which Sean Miller,
I think there's gonna be a lot of expectations coining
this season. I mean, obviously comes with a pretty big resume,
and obviously there's a little bit of disappointment with the
way that the Rodney Terry era ended. But Seawan's a
good coach. I think they'll probably get some things turned around,
and we'll have to see you losing, you know, losing
(29:46):
a huge piece that we're going to hear in Trey's
name called in the NBA drafts in a couple of
couple of days. But I think it's aas football gram
will probably get going in the right direction, with which
Shawn in charge.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Let me ask you this before we let you go there.
Continue to recruit well over on the forty Acres by
Big Schaeffer. A lot of hype around this basketball team.
Madison Booker is playing on the Junior Olympic team. What
what are your expectations.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
For the women.
Speaker 7 (30:15):
The expectations now are final four. I mean they finally
got over that illegiate hump last year, ran to a
very good South Carolina team that kind of had their
number throughout the season. But the standard now is final four,
and they're going to have This is not a shoeing.
They have some big holes they need to fill. You know,
Shay Holly, you know everything she meant to that program,
Taylor Jones, some of the transfers. I think losing jack
(30:38):
Olga to Vanderbilt did a huge loss and they're going
to have to build fill some homes. But you have
a Madison Booker, you have a Ry Harmon, you have
your foundational pieces, and you work your way around it.
But the standard now is final four, and I think
anything less than that, both from a fan perspective or
a meteor perspective or inside that building probably is going
to be disappointment. So the standers now final four, so
(31:00):
they can go on ty to run and win that
ele lose to state champions or national championshi because it's
gonna be the forty year anniversary of their last one
in eighty six, So we'll see if they can get
that done.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
There is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. You
can at underscore Danny Davis. We'll talk to you next week. Buck, Yes,
all right, there is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
When we come back, we are going to talk Texas baseball.
They got some All Americans and some All regions and
we'll bring it up right here on the morning kickoff
(31:31):
on sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
Great stuff by our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin
American Statesman. As I said, you can follow him at Underscore.
Danny Davis coming up at eight seventeen. You do not
want to miss our interview with Chris Hummer of twenty
four to seven Sports.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
He covers the transfer portal.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
College football as a whole, the whole kitten kaboodle, and
we'll talk about the House settlement and what it exactly means.
But right now, we're gonna give you a chance to
win a pair of tickets to go see Alice Cooper
and Judas Priest October the twenty fifth at the Germania
Insurance AMPI Theater. All you got to do is get
(32:11):
over to that iHeartRadio app, you know the one that
you're already listening to us on tap that red microphone
and leave the word shred. Shred is the word of
the day for you to get a chance to win
a pair of tickets to go see Alice Cooper and
Judas Priest at the Germania Ampa Theater. That's right, get
(32:32):
a chance to go do that as well. I want
to talk Texas Baseball because Texas Baseball and the accolades
continue to roll in for Texas Baseball as they land
four guys, four guys on the rawlings All American and
All Regional teams, and Ryland Galvan and Dylan Valantis, Eata
(32:55):
Mendoza and Luke Harrison all earned the All Region Accola
by the American Baseball Coaches Association that was named on Monday. Also,
you know, Dylan Valantis was named Freshman Pitcher of the
Year and Adrian Rodriguez and Dylan I mean Adrian, Yeah,
(33:17):
Adrian Rodriguez and Dylan Valantis headlined the Perfect Game Freshman
All Americans. I've been really really big on a rod
Adrian Rodriguez. A lot was not expected from him, but
he ends up coming in and being the force that
(33:37):
the team needed. I wish that he wouldn't have gotten
hurt because his numbers would have been even better because
of the talent that he has, Ethan Mendoza coming in
from Arizona State and him taking over the top of
that lineup and being the catalyst for this team, and
then Luke Harrison being the steady vet that he was
(34:00):
being able to come back and be that solid number two.
For him to be able to earn that All Region honor,
I know that that means something a lot to him
and Ryland Galvan. He's expected to be drafted pretty high.
I would say fifth through eighth, ninth round. His numbers
(34:21):
were outstanding. He led the team in seven offensive categories.
He had fifteen home runs, which was the most of
a Texas catcher since Chris Abbey in nineteen ninety two.
And he is up for the Buster Posey Catcher of
the Year award. He is one of three finalists. So
(34:42):
this team has done some amazing things. And the good
part about it is you're gonna get a lot of
these guys back. You're gonna get a Rod back, You're
gonna get Dylan Valentis.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Dylan may be a starter next year.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
I remember coach mentioning that to us, but he did
so well come out of the bullpen Ethan Mendoza. He
is going to be at the top of that lineup
as a leader. Hopefully he gets the shoulder figured out
and he'll be ready to go. So the only question
we will have is what's going to happen with Galvan,
what's going to happen with Flores and a couple of
(35:17):
those other guys. But all in all, this team is
in a very, very good spot.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
It's always good to have some depth, but you know,
it's nothing like having guys that you developed. And that
was something even coach Mike White was saying yesterday, is
they recruited really well, so they want to make sure
that those people get a chance to be developed and
get to play. But you gotta find that happy medium
(35:44):
and maybe reach into the portal and get one or
two pieces that can complete your team.
Speaker 1 (35:49):
Well, the biggest part for Texas is going to be
those high school kids that they have recruited. Those high
school kids are top of the line first round pick,
second round picks that are waiting for the for the
Major League draft to happen, and then you will know,
with them moving the draft back, it kind of kind
(36:09):
of makes things a little bit tough when you're trying
to go into the transfer portal. You're trying to balance
your books. We're going to talk to to Chris Hummer
at eight seventeen, and you know, this goes into the settlement,
but this also goes into what the schools are going
to be able to pay for some of these kids
to come in as far as scholarships.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
So you look at teams like, you know, Mississippi State,
you know they can pay, but somebody like Texas State,
where they're gonna get twenty million.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Yeah, I mean, that's gonna be the biggest difference. It's
the Group of five and the Power five. You know
what I'm saying. When you're covering the g fives, their
money is gonna be a little bit different than what
these big schools. But you also got to look at
see what is your money maker for the school. If
the baseball program or basketball program is the money maker,
(37:03):
then you want to make sure that you got good
basketball players.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
You're going to make sure you got good baseball players.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
I mean baseball is I'm not going to say a
non revenue generating sport because if you look at it,
the numbers tell you differently, just like softball, softball that
they deserve more money too. I mean, they deserve renovations,
they deserve to have certain things. Especially now Texas is
a national champion. They treat you a little bit different.
(37:30):
When you got the belt around, they treat you different.
So you start to look at the programs here on
the forty acres and what the expectations and the ability
to take care of all of those people. It's it's
a big, big ask and now we get to see
what's going to happen next. So I'm excited for it all.
(37:53):
I'm excited for this baseball team. I know coach s
Losnegel and you talked about it. Coach White went on
the road last night to start recruiting, to try to
get ahead of not only next year's recruiting class, but
the class of twenty seven. You got to make sure
that you continue in the recruit and recruit and recruit
to make sure that you kind of lock up some
of those important players as you move forward. Our number
(38:17):
one is in the books coming up. In our number.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
Two, we talked Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Just around the corner some good news and Micah Parsons
showed up to camp, and so did Mark's favorite player.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
We have Chris Hummer at eight seventeen.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
We're on Strongest Take and of course our final segment
as we'll preview the NBA. You do not want to
miss our number two right here on a way Back
Wednesday edition of The Morning Kickoff on sports Radio and
thirteen hundred is a welcome back to a way Back
Wednesday edition of The Morning Kickoff right here on Sports
(38:54):
Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone, Mike Harballhart's World's Strongest Man,
WWE Hall of Fame, Mark Henry, and of course our
guy Marcus on the boards and nour number one. We
talked about Aaron Rodgers is in camp. He's married and
ready to roll. He's married to the Pittsburgh Steelers as well,
so we'll see how that turns out. We also talked
(39:15):
about the Houston Texans and the expectations.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
Have gone through the roof. CJ.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
Stroud is fine and they made a lot of changes.
We talked to Danny Davis about the Texas football team,
softball team, and of course we talked baseball. But right
now we're gonna talk Dallas Cowboys. But coming up at
eight seventeen, we'll talk to Chris Hummer of twenty four
to seventh Sports. The Dallas Cowboys also are in camp.
They got a new coach. They brought in a backup
(39:44):
quarterback named Joe Milton, but they brought in a top
wide receiver name Pickens, George Pickens to be exact. And
now the Cowboys are excited about everything.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
But here's the change.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
And of course the conversation is always gonna be about
Michael Parsons, is he gonna sign this contract, how is
things going, what else is gonna be happening. But the
question was will Micah show up for camp? And Brian
Schottenheimer he's gonna be known as Shoty moving forward, talked
about Parsons and Mark's favorite player Diggs showing up to camp.
Speaker 10 (40:23):
Is Michael Parsons in Trayvon Day's and attendance.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
Today, Yes, sir, it's a great symbo.
Speaker 5 (40:28):
Will mister Parsons be working out today?
Speaker 3 (40:31):
He'll be out on the field doing some stuff. Yep,
that's a great Trayvon got here early. It's great to
see him.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
He's one of the first guys I saw and he
got his rehab stuff in with Britt.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
So both guys were excited to be here, glad to
have it. You know, he wasn't foregoing all that money. Man.
Everybody was thinking.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
Listen, they know exactly what they're doing. They not giving
up money if they trying to get money.
Speaker 3 (40:51):
You know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 1 (40:53):
I'm not finna give you a reason to not pay
me by not showing up for practice.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Hey five hundred, yes, thousand dollars uh change?
Speaker 1 (41:06):
Well, his phone, he was out there with us. It
was just a positive end of my count. Yeah, that's
how that went down. But it was good that they
got there and got a chance to be back on.
But he said, Michaeh Parsons, is he gonna be working
out y'all.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
It'll be on the field doing things.
Speaker 7 (41:27):
Well.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
What he was doing yesterday was talking to Jerry Jones
for most of the practice. It seemed to be a
good conversation. Micah didn't look like he was saying much,
but Jerry was doing all the talking.
Speaker 3 (41:39):
And remember, Jerry.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
Is doing everything he possibly can to get this deal
done without David Mugiletta. Let me tell you something. David
is gonna get his player, his money. We've seen it
throughout time. He don't play about his players in their bread.
So you can try to pretend like you're gonna try
to get a deal done with Micah, and Micah's sitting
(42:02):
there saying, nodding and doing everything.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
He needs to. That's what he's supposed to do. Is
it just David that he has a problem with or
all agents?
Speaker 1 (42:11):
I think it's all agents and it just so happened
that Micah is the guy right now. But I mean
he's worked with them before, he's had to. This ain't
the first contract conversation that they've had before. So you
start to look at the progress and everything that's going on.
But what you really have to understand is the relationship
(42:35):
that Brian Schottenheimer Shoddy has been forging with Micah Parsons
and how important the relationship building process has been for Micah.
Speaker 14 (42:46):
Since you know, he got hired. I've been very impressed
with this. He's been building a relationship with me. I
would say it's different because you know, especially when you've
got an offensive coach, they don't tend to like want
to reach out and check in on the daily or
the monthly to see how's your training? Going where you're going,
calling you on your birthday. It's kind of more exit meeting,
intro meetings. What they expect out of you, how happy
they're here for you. Like I said, it's been constantly
(43:08):
since he's been reaching out with me, building that relationship
with me, going above and beyond, inviting my family places,
showing up to you know, my events, things like that.
Speaker 3 (43:16):
So kudos to him.
Speaker 14 (43:17):
That's something that I don't think is an easy dudecause
you don't know how certain people would accept it. But
I think he's accepted his role pretty well. And I
think he has everyone excited around here. Wow, man, how
do you not like the dude?
Speaker 2 (43:31):
I'm telling you, this is the most optimistic and hopeful
I felt about a coach since Parcels.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
I knew this was happening. I knew it. I knew
once you started listening. Are you are you coming back?
Are you coming back? I said, we yesterday? Shot.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
Is he got me fool or he's actually doing the
right thing.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
Bro.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
He had the court learn the Greek dance. He had
them go out and do a Greek dance. But the
best part, and this is going to take you over
the top. Mark, This is gonna bring you all the
way back, y'all. Hope you listen.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Let me swallow my tea because I don't spit my
tea out.
Speaker 3 (44:20):
I want you to hear I'm listening. I got my
hand on my head.
Speaker 1 (44:24):
This this trend that is going around where fellas call
each other a say good night and see what the
reaction is going to be. Wait until you hear Michaeh.
Parsons call Shoddy and tell him good night, coach.
Speaker 3 (44:44):
Yeah, I just wanted to say good night. Okay, I
love that, bro. What's going on y'all? Good? Yeah, you
know what I mean.
Speaker 15 (44:50):
I just feel like, you know, player to coach, just
checking it on you mento, Sao night.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
Whole fans will see you one day. I'm excited.
Speaker 13 (44:59):
Run.
Speaker 3 (45:00):
This is a good night well good man.
Speaker 16 (45:02):
Hey look hey, look, I know this is weird for everybody, man,
but look you're handling everything the right way, bro, and
this thing's gonna get worked out. And again, I'm just
I'm thrilled to see where we take the same.
Speaker 15 (45:14):
Man.
Speaker 16 (45:14):
We're building something special and you're gonna be a huge
party bro.
Speaker 15 (45:18):
Yeah man, oh yeah, oh yeah, Shelton, take a shoty
for me when you got a chance.
Speaker 10 (45:23):
Man.
Speaker 16 (45:23):
Hey, I'm drinking a shotty right now, ready for tonight?
Speaker 3 (45:28):
Brother?
Speaker 2 (45:29):
Oh yeah, Hey, I'm shit call man for real and
I look forward to seeing you Monday and it's gonna.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
Get great week. I'll hold on. Oh man. If you
tess when I thought I was out, hey, pull me
back in.
Speaker 2 (45:52):
If any of my friends are thinking about calling me
and saying good night, please guys, don't do it. Don't
do it, because my eyes started getting very heavy.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
About ten o'clock.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
And if you call me at ten fifteen, ten twenty,
I'm gonna I'm gonna have a problem with your good
night call so and on top of that, text me
and say good night. Well maybe I read that you
don't have to do any of that hard. If if
Marcus called you to at like ten thirty.
Speaker 3 (46:30):
Well, first off, I know something wrong. You're gonna be like, hey,
you're gonna be at work the mine.
Speaker 1 (46:36):
You're good, But what what is the message that you
just heard there?
Speaker 3 (46:43):
He was excited, he was he was gay. What you call?
Speaker 6 (46:46):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (46:46):
You good? Everything good? He was checking on him. He
was trying to do a prank.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
And if you went in backfire, yes, it turned into
a little pist That's that's good though, man, right, very good.
I'm gonna set my team right now because I'm feeling
real warm on the outside and now I need to
feel warm on inside.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
You are now calling back in to the love fest
of the Cowboys, just like Jerry Jones.
Speaker 3 (47:18):
No, there wouldn't be a prank. We don't need to
prank him.
Speaker 1 (47:21):
We need to make sure that he get that check
to Michael Parsons. That's what you need. You originally was
trying to trade Michael. You wanted them gone go get
some go get some draft picks. You got a coach
that is trying to lead this team. You got players
that are buying into you.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
Trying to make me have to be the bad guy
because I can understand what a salary cap look like
and what's gonna work and what's not gonna work.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
You just gave us a whole dissertation at seven o'clock
about how each year they get more money, the salary
cap gonna change every single year.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
So factory Jerry is not the Bengals. But Jerry likes
to make a scene.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Bro All I don't like it is sign these players early.
What is the winning recipe in Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
But it'll be quiet if you signed them. Sometimes it's okay.
Jerry Jones wants noise.
Speaker 3 (48:18):
He can't even hear why. Maybe that's why.
Speaker 1 (48:22):
He wants noise, like turn it out up, turn it up.
My main thing is you have to be able to understand.
As you said, the salary cap Philadelphia is the poster
child of understanding.
Speaker 3 (48:40):
When you have the talent, lock it up early.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
That's exactly what the Atlanta Braves are doing in baseball.
Speaker 3 (48:47):
They're locking up their talent early.
Speaker 1 (48:51):
The Boston Red Sox have now tried to lock up
their talent early.
Speaker 9 (48:57):
Heck, you can go back in basketball, the Golden State
war Warriors before that big money deal with TV deal
popped in, they was signing playing uh and stuff earlyer Yes, Draymon,
I mean you there's there's a game plan that is
out there.
Speaker 3 (49:12):
Jerry.
Speaker 1 (49:12):
You're still gonna make your money because the fans aren't
going anywhere.
Speaker 3 (49:16):
He almost lost us last season, He.
Speaker 1 (49:19):
Almost lost us with the Shoddy higher. But now players
are buying into what he is wanting to believe in.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
You're seeing now why he hired Shoddy.
Speaker 1 (49:31):
Well, we ain't gonna hey, we ain't play no games
yet right, no games have been played.
Speaker 3 (49:37):
No games.
Speaker 9 (49:39):
You can see him call, you can see Shotty can
talk you into some stuff.
Speaker 3 (49:43):
Oh yeah, yeah he is easy, smooth guy, smooth man.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
He got me over here, like having feelings and stuff like, man,
Cowboy's gonna win ten twelve games. I'm gonna have to
go back and and redeal our list for the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
I cannot wait. That is hilarious.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
Coming up next, we're gonna talk NCAA settlement and get
a little bit of information from our guy. I got
question Chris Hummer of twenty four to seven Sports Right
now on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Mike Harball,
(50:26):
HARJ World Strongest Man, d Mark Henry, and of course Marcus.
Speaker 3 (50:30):
We are efforting Chris Hummer to get him on.
Speaker 1 (50:34):
You know, when you don't have recognizable numbers, sometimes people
don't want to answer. But we are a Sam blocker. Well,
I mean, I'm sure a lot of people do. I mean,
you're you're a lot more popular than everybody else. Hey,
good blocker ass, So you know, got to make sure
that you know the numbers when people are calling, so
we're trying to make that happen. And joining us on
(50:56):
the hotline is our guy Chris Hummer of twenty four
to seven Sports. You can follow them at Chris Underscore.
Hummer and Chris. Let's get right into it. First off,
good to talk to you again, my friend. It's been
a minute. Glad you can kick back on with us.
But let's get right into the conversation about the House settlement.
Two point eight billion dollars in back damages going to
(51:20):
for players from twenty sixteen to twenty twenty four, and
then of course you got the revenue sharing that is
going on.
Speaker 3 (51:28):
But how did we get here?
Speaker 17 (51:32):
A lot of billion hours in the court.
Speaker 13 (51:38):
But yeah, I mean we got here by.
Speaker 17 (51:42):
I mean, you get to look out it a bunch
of ways, but I think ultimately we got here because
a lot of members of the NCAA. And again I
want to stress the NCAA isn't just this like big
bad like corporate organization in the Annapolis. Like the NCAA
is the schools right like as the schools chancellors with
the presidents, And it was the NCAA sticking its head
(52:05):
in the sand for years and years and years and
refusing to change, make reasonable change to pay your labor essentially,
and then what happened was the labor got upset and
it went to court, and the NCAA has lost a
series of challenges in court. The NCAA has had states
make laws that counteract their rules, and those.
Speaker 13 (52:24):
Two things working in conjunction have led to.
Speaker 17 (52:27):
A place where the NCAA has to settle a multi
billion dollar lawsuit to avoid essentially having its business model
fall apart. And that's where we are now and moving forward.
Speaker 13 (52:38):
College athletics is going to look a lot different.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
So essentially the NCAA is they're going to go broke
if they don't do what they're supposed to do.
Speaker 17 (52:50):
Yeah, because I think instead of I mean in the
NCAA President Charlie Baker said something like this recently. Instead
of paying a two point eight billion dollar altment over
a ten year period, like yes, may have had to
pay a eight billion dollars settlement in a month some
and let's just not possibly avoid had they actually had
(53:11):
to fight this in court as opposed to settling out
of court.
Speaker 13 (53:14):
Like they did.
Speaker 17 (53:15):
So, Yes, this was a matter of survival in a
lot of ways for college athletics.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
So in football, you have one hundred and five players
on the team, and this does this essentially say that
all one hundred and five players are going to get something.
Speaker 13 (53:33):
Not necessarily.
Speaker 7 (53:35):
So previously you could have one.
Speaker 13 (53:37):
Hundred and twenty five players.
Speaker 17 (53:39):
A lot of those the forty were walk ons, basically
eighty five to one twenty five. Now one hundred and
five players can be on scholarship. But a lot of
schools are staying in eighty five at least for this year.
The SEC specifically is keeping people at eighty five for
this cycle. But I think moving forward, those last twenty
guys your roster will begin to get scholarships. I think
(54:04):
it's just the way we're headed. They might not be
full scholarships. You're allowed to give partial scholarships under this
model if you choose to. But I do imagine all
getting something and then it's there too, like even like
your decent walk ons are getting a small percentage in
nil as well as a reason that beyond the roster,
(54:24):
because you're not getting scholarships like to the school obviously.
So yeah, a lot of guys will.
Speaker 13 (54:29):
Be getting something.
Speaker 1 (54:30):
Yeah, that's the interesting Excuse me, that's the interesting part.
And we're talking to Chris Hummer of twenty four to
seven Sports. All you gotta do is follow him at
Chris Underscore Hummer and Chris. As we sit here today,
you're talking about scholarships and all the things that go
into it.
Speaker 3 (54:47):
But there's more that is going on you have to get.
Speaker 1 (54:50):
If you decide that there's going to be money that
is going to be given by third party of more
than six hundred dollars, you have to go through the.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
Clearing house again.
Speaker 1 (55:01):
How is that going to change athletics as well?
Speaker 17 (55:06):
It'll get a significant change depending on the keith that
enforcement mechanism has. Right now, NIL deals are basically just
salary right like they're very like I would say five
percent of college athletes have true nil where you're going
out using your NIL to represent a brand and they're
paying you for your marketability like arch Manning with Red
(55:30):
Bull for example.
Speaker 13 (55:31):
That's true NIL. Like that's going to pass through.
Speaker 17 (55:34):
Nil go no problem because they are seeking out arch
Manning because of his marketability marketability. What'll be interesting to
see is what happens with kind of those leftover dollars.
A lot of schools weren't spending fourteen to fifteen million
dollars in football a year.
Speaker 13 (55:50):
They were well below that.
Speaker 17 (55:52):
Now they'll have that money from repshare, but a school
like Texas was way above that.
Speaker 13 (55:56):
Number in the first place.
Speaker 17 (55:58):
So it's a matter of how Texas makes up that
money with true andil and that has to go through
the clearinghouse. Like those deals can't come from boosters. You
can't get a new F one fifty for showing up
at a dealership once and taking a picture anymore, at least.
Speaker 13 (56:14):
By the letter of the law.
Speaker 17 (56:16):
So that'll be interesting with the clearinghouse one like how
often they deny deals? And then two what happens if
they do, because a school and a player don't necessarily
have to listen to that, but if they don't, they
risk their eligibility.
Speaker 1 (56:30):
Wow, So this thing has kind of changed dramatically. And
the other part that I wanted to ask you about
too is does this open up the fact of possibly players.
Speaker 3 (56:43):
Being signed to contracts?
Speaker 1 (56:45):
And now if you decide that the transfer portal which
is always popping and you're getting paid X amount of dollars,
do you have to pay that money back?
Speaker 3 (56:56):
Is it something that is part of your contract.
Speaker 1 (56:59):
How is all these stipulations going to be worked out
moving forward?
Speaker 17 (57:05):
Well, we already have contracts in college athletics, sometimes multi
year contracts, and a lot of them have, i mean
buyout clauses. I will say, like a lot of them
stipulate that if you leave after a certain time, you
have to pay a certain percentage of your NIL dollars back.
They're just not always enforceable, right like in the way
(57:28):
we think about enforceability, Like in the NFL, if you
cut a player early, right like, they have a certain
percentage of guaranteed money they get. In college athletics, it's
hard to enforce that on both sides because athletes aren't
technically employees. Like we saw this in the case of
(57:49):
Xavier Lucas, who was the starter this year for Wisconsin.
Speaker 13 (57:52):
He signed a new NIL.
Speaker 17 (57:54):
Deal with the school after his freshman year, like in
early December, but in early January he decided he wanted
to train. It's from Wisconsin to Miami. Wisconsin wouldn't let
him out of his NIL contract, and then Xavier Lucas
just transferred anyway without entering the portal through a loophole
that's out there.
Speaker 13 (58:12):
So it's not always enforceable.
Speaker 17 (58:15):
And it's kind of a kind of a gray area
given that. Again, like these contracts aren't being collectively bargained
and these athletes aren't employees.
Speaker 2 (58:25):
What about the rights to your likeness the two year spot,
Like if you sign.
Speaker 3 (58:33):
That school maintains your two year rights.
Speaker 17 (58:39):
Yeah, I think that also comes with the contracts, and
like the specifics there get worked out if you leave.
But I think schools are trying to be as creative
as possible to get guys to stay as long as
possible in that regard, and trying to make transferring less
likely with the way they structure the contracts. But I
don't know a single example where a school cap dove
(59:01):
players likeness after he decided to leave in brokers contract.
I don't know everything, Like as my wife would say,
I know very little at all outside of them, but
I don't know of any examples where that's the case exactly.
Speaker 1 (59:19):
Yeah, this game has changed so much, which obviously we've
been working towards this to your point, that's how we
got here. Lots of lawyer billing hours to get this
thing done.
Speaker 3 (59:31):
But what's next?
Speaker 1 (59:32):
You know, we've talked about the transfer portal at nauseum.
There's so much that goes into that. Players are getting
into this thing every single day. Do we see a
decrease or we see an increase moving forward?
Speaker 13 (59:49):
I think I.
Speaker 17 (59:50):
Mean, we might see a slight decrease, but I don't
think it has anything to do with the REVS share
elements of this. I think it has mortared you with
the fact that there are very few players left now
COVID years.
Speaker 13 (01:00:02):
So it's just like there's.
Speaker 17 (01:00:03):
One last less classification of athletes who can transfer. So
you might see a slight decrease with that, but no,
I don't. I don't really anticipate a huge decrease across
the board. You might see fewer good players leave, right because, like,
schools are going to pay to keep their best players
on the roster, and we saw a lot of that
this year at the transfer portal. There are a lot
(01:00:24):
of players who left, but very few All conference players
from the P four level transferred. I actually think only
like one first team All Conference player on the powerful
level transfer the entire offseason, So that just goes to
show you schools pay to keep their guys. But like
when you're talking about guys from the G five from
the SCF.
Speaker 13 (01:00:44):
Like they're going to move no matter what.
Speaker 17 (01:00:46):
Like there's just too much money to be made at
the P four level, So that movement, as long as
the transfer rules stay where they are, is going to
continue to happen.
Speaker 1 (01:00:54):
Man, it is so crazy when you think about where
we are and how we got here. He sure we
having right now, but you know what, it ain't going nowhere.
So now it's just hold on people, wild wild West,
the have and the have nots.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
As always, Hummer. We appreciate you getting.
Speaker 1 (01:01:12):
Up to take the time, and we'll continue these conversations
a little bit later in this offseason.
Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
Thanks Bud, Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:01:19):
I appreciate you'll th problem man.
Speaker 1 (01:01:21):
Coming up next, we've got the world strongest Man giving
you his world's strongest take right here on away back
Wednesday edition of the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:01:35):
You heard that beat dropping. That can only mean one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:01:38):
W W Hall of Famer and the World's Strongest Man,
the Mark Henry brings you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:01:47):
Take it away, big fellow, all right or something? You
know what? Well, Thomas if time for.
Speaker 2 (01:01:53):
The world's Strongest take by the World's strongest men Marcus.
Back then, they didn't know me. Now I'm hot, They're
all on me.
Speaker 13 (01:02:05):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
I made this statement, and I'm and and and I'm
gonna say it with my chests.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
I feel like whoever won the East.
Speaker 2 (01:02:24):
Last year in the Super Bowl was gonna win the
Super Bowl. Whether it was the Eagles or it was
the Rams, either one would have beat Kansas City. And
I'm I'm standing on that in that statement being said,
(01:02:44):
DeVante Adams, you know, one of the top receivers in
the NFL, played with Aaron Rodgers, then went to Las Vegas,
had a horrible record, but he played well. He was
(01:03:07):
not the problem in Las Vegas. But Aaron Rodgers goes
to the Jets and is recruited.
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
By Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 2 (01:03:18):
Aaron Rodgers, of course, always had the power to be
able to bring his guys around him.
Speaker 3 (01:03:25):
Devonte Adams.
Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
Is now with the Los Angeles Rams, a functional, organized,
well tuned franchise that has a history of what.
Speaker 3 (01:03:45):
Winning and as an upgrade from Cooper Cup.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
I know Cooper Cup was a All of All Star,
the best receiver in the league at one time, but
that's the operative term. At one time. Devonte Adams is
still in it, excuse me, in his prime and will
(01:04:13):
be not only a receiver that can play either side
or the slot. He's playing opposite Pook in the cop
He's not gonna always draw the double team, maybe for
the first time in his career. I really do think
(01:04:33):
that the Rams are gonna give a very very serious
run to see who's gonna go to the super Bowl
this year.
Speaker 3 (01:04:45):
That's my take, and I want to go.
Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
And I want to say a couple of things that
Devonte Adams said. He said that I'm absolutely enjoying the
fact that there's a college type atmosphere here. It's breathtaking
that there's no drama. That all there is is ball
(01:05:09):
to be played hard. What's say you, Well, Davante Adams
was part of the drama. So for him to say
that he needs to kind of take a look in
the mirror, yes, when he was saying, oh, when he
was in Las Vegas, Yeah, he was doing his thing,
but the team wasn't winning. So he decided that it
was time to kind of bark at some folks and
(01:05:32):
do some different things.
Speaker 3 (01:05:34):
Because you leave Green Bay because.
Speaker 1 (01:05:35):
Everybody, it seems like everybody wants to give Green Bay.
Their props for the way looking back about how good
things were in Green Bay when you are with a
professional organization that knows how to handle business. But I
look at what he's been able to do throughout his career,
no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:56):
He is talented.
Speaker 1 (01:05:57):
Matthew Stafford felt like he got the fountain of youth
last season.
Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
You talked about.
Speaker 1 (01:06:05):
Them playing in the playoff game in the in the
championship game between Philadelphia and themselves, and they're Saquon. Philadelphia's
Saquon Barkley had two big runs during that game. If
he doesn't have those runs and Matthew Stafford is driving
his team down the field for that game winning drive,
(01:06:25):
game might be a little bit different and they could
have gotten back to the super Bowl. But back to
Davonte Adams, and you know, I look at this as
as you said, something that's definitely positive.
Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
I mean, he is talented.
Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
Well, he had he had sixty seven catchers eight and
fifty four yards in seven touchdowns last season.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
Yeah, yeah, most of those happened at the end of
the year. That most of those happened at the end
of the season. Though, when when he really when Aaron
got healthy and started really pumping him the football. I
remember a couple of games because I had him on
my fantasy team, so that's how I know at the
end he really got hot, So it was it was
important to see that. But all in all, you look
(01:07:11):
at Pook and the cool Can he stay healthy? Can
Pooka stay healthy? He's had to deal with some of
those injuries. I do like the fact that Jay Witt
is there and he can learn under a wide receiver
like Davonte Adams and be taught things.
Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
But they're still in that.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
Division where San Francisco is still there. You don't know
what Seattle's going to be And can can Arizona finally
get over the hump with Kyler Murray? Those are good,
good teams that are out there. But I'm with you,
I think the energy with McVeagh. McVeigh is one of
(01:07:50):
the brightest minds that was out there. He was on
the fence a couple times about retiring, walking away, just
because of so much work that goes into it. But
they will be a team that a lot of folks
have high hopes for. Let's just say that I'm Devanta.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
Adams said he felt regenerated rejuvenated, and that's gonna bode
to the fact that the running game is what mc
bay really wants to get off. And with that movement
and the safety is having to respect two wide receivers
just like the Cowboys are gonna do with manipulating safeties,
(01:08:32):
it's gonna bode well for the running back to have
great season two. Well, there he is the world's Strongest Man,
bringing you another world's Strongest tech.
Speaker 1 (01:08:42):
We're gonna close up the show and send you to
Dan Patrick. But coming up next we're gonna talk about
the man, the myth, the legend, Lee Corso.
Speaker 3 (01:08:51):
Oh yeah, and how he is going to end it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:55):
We'll talk about it right here on the morning kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. What a great show
we have had, and what a great week we're at
Hunt day, so that means we're going to continue to
roll on. Want to give a shout out to Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman, always coming through and
(01:09:16):
bringing that heat. And of course, what a great conversation
we had with Chris Hummer of Horns twenty four No
it's not Horns twenty four to seven, twenty four to
seven Sports talking house settlement, the expectations and how we
got to this point, and of course we had the
world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
But it was announced.
Speaker 1 (01:09:38):
Yesterday that Lead Corso's final headgear game will be at
the Horseshoe.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
And I don't think there was any doubt that game day.
Speaker 1 (01:09:48):
College game Day was going to be at opening weekend
of college football, was going to be Texas versus Ohio State,
arch manning first game as a true starter going into
the season lead cours, So why would you go anywhere else?
(01:10:09):
I don't even know what other games are on the schedule,
but they don't truly matter. College Game Day, final hair
gear game for league course. So I'm gonna be honest
with you, and I know it may not be a
popular opinion here.
Speaker 3 (01:10:24):
I think this should have been done a while back.
Lee was not the same. He was not the same
the entire time. But I know that.
Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
We have family members that we want to be around
and we want to try to liven them up. And
you know as well as I do, these are the
types of moments that he needs in his life to
keep him going, to keep him relevant, to keep his
energy and his juices going about the game is He's
(01:10:57):
been a legend in it.
Speaker 3 (01:10:59):
He has been fun, he's.
Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Been crazy, he's been odane and it is going to
be a sad Saturday for a lot of people. I
don't know if Kirk Herbstreet is going to make it
through the show at all. Because of his relationship with
Lee Corso, he's been in our living rooms forever Saturday morning,
(01:11:23):
That's why we're there.
Speaker 3 (01:11:25):
I got a quick story about Lee Corso.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
When my son DJ was I think he was probably
seven or eight. They were on the fairgrounds. I was
on one side, they were on the other side. And
DJ is walking through the fairgrounds and Lee Corso waves
to him and calls him over.
Speaker 3 (01:11:47):
And says hello.
Speaker 1 (01:11:49):
Well then fast forward last season, he's Odell beckhaman junior
a T shirt out of the crowd and Lee Corso.
Speaker 3 (01:12:00):
Of course, what's part of that?
Speaker 1 (01:12:01):
So every time you get a chance to see Lee Corso,
he always brings out a bunch of memories.
Speaker 2 (01:12:09):
Man, I'm I'm sad and I've adopted the not so
fast and to pay homage to Lee Corso, I am
not saying that because I think I'm that live that
I did it.
Speaker 3 (01:12:24):
No, that is Lee Corso. Everybody knows it when you
hear it. Leak.
Speaker 2 (01:12:29):
Corso is one of my favorites. Man, I don't I
don't know football without him. Yeah, and it's gonna be
tough for me too. Yeah, it's gonna be a different time.
And you know, as anything else, you start to look
at the nostalgia of it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:44):
But look, they got Pat McAfee up there. Now they've
got Nick Saban up there. Now you got Corso, I
mean not Corso, but you got herb Street.
Speaker 3 (01:12:54):
You still got dead.
Speaker 2 (01:12:55):
Look how Niggy Gabin looks at Pat McAfee when he's talking, like,
at first she.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Didn't know how to take them, are you? At first
he didn't know how to take them. But now they're tight.
They taking drinks together, eating food together. I mean they
Nick Saban looks like he's having a great time being
up there. But my question is do you replace Corso
or do you leave it with just those guys up.
Speaker 2 (01:13:20):
I think they're good the way they are. I mean,
how you replace Lee Corso.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
Bring shack up there?
Speaker 2 (01:13:28):
Like you got to bring a dominant entertainment figure from
sports to do that. Mac Brown is available and Mac
Brown used to do that, so he used to be
in studio, So it would be interesting to see if
they decide to bring somebody else.
Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
I don't think they should. I think because there's too
many people up on that stage already talking. So it's
just like I mean, sometimes it can be a lot.
But best of luck to him and can't wait for
that final game and it just happens to be Texas
versus Ohio State at the shoe eleven am kickoff Central time.
(01:14:11):
You know how that goes, Big Newton kickoff will be
there as well. That's what that happens. When you're yeah,
you gotta get it ready. But tonight we got the
NBA Finals, okay see five and a half point favorites
versus Indiana. Indiana, they have to get this game going
and turned into the right direction because you start looking
(01:14:33):
if you can get if you get down two games
to one, you can kiss the baby. Because okay See
is already are okay see this will be if if
okay See wins this game tonight, they will win the
series in a gentleman's suite.
Speaker 3 (01:14:49):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Yeah, because Indiana has no answer. They have to answer tonight.
If Tyrese Halliburton is passive and not being aggressive and
waiting til the fourth quarter decide to try to make
a run when it doesn't truly matter.
Speaker 3 (01:15:04):
It's not gonna happen for them anymore.
Speaker 1 (01:15:06):
I know it's their home court advantage and they hope
to get it going. And I think Okac has not
been good in game threes. They don't think they're one
in two in game threes.
Speaker 2 (01:15:19):
I don't think it'll be Halliburton to be the star
of the night. I think that if if Indiana wins
this game, it'll be because Mattherine are.
Speaker 3 (01:15:28):
Nate Smith, our guy from the.
Speaker 2 (01:15:31):
University of Texas, miles turnouts, turn the steps up.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
Well, I'm gonna tell you this much.
Speaker 1 (01:15:37):
If if he is not the reason they win, he
will be the reason why they lose.
Speaker 3 (01:15:44):
Well that's the truth. Yeah, because.
Speaker 1 (01:15:48):
He has to play, he has to play well, and
he has to help his team out big time. To
be able to number one, he has to have his confidence. Yeah,
he's got to be twenty and ten because this is
the moment that for his self, this could be legacy,
this could be something huge. Because we were calling him
(01:16:09):
mister overrate. No, well we weren't, but people called them
mister overrated. But now you start looking at him and
you're like, Okay, don't don't let what you have already
captured this offseason. I mean, this postseason hurts you the
rest of the way because people will see you shrink,
and you don't want to shrink in those situations. No, no, you,
(01:16:32):
I can't have that. Let's pretlease play that we do
not have that. I want to thank Mark Henry as
always for doing his thing. I want to thank Marcus
for doing his and as we always say to you,
like follow, subscribe and tell friends about the morning kickoff.
(01:16:53):
We got so many things that we're going to be
doing this summer. We have a lot going on and
you never know who's going to popong. Speaking of that,
make sure tomorrow you tune in. We have Eric Henry
of Horns twenty four seven joining us and lifetime Longhorn,
the Legend Hall of Famer Earl Campbell will be joining
(01:17:14):
us for our Legends of the Locker Room segment.
Speaker 3 (01:17:18):
You do not want to miss that.
Speaker 1 (01:17:21):
For Mark Henry, for Marcus, I'm harball hard and just
remember this, don't believe everything you see, because even salt
looks like sugar.
Speaker 3 (01:17:28):
Have a great day, Curious
