Speaker 4 (00:44):
Who is on vacation but filling.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
In for Mike Harje is my guy, Eric Henry ken Volk.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Good morning man, how you doing.
Speaker 5 (00:56):
Good morning Austin, Texas. Good night morning to my co host,
the world Strongest Man, Mark Henry. Of course Marcus Spears
holding everything down behind the scenes. It's always a great
feeling to hear that gap band. When that gap band hits,
none of you know your business, baby, it always it's Mark.
(01:17):
Appreciate you and morning kickoff doing it here on a
throwback Thursday. Mark plenty to get into today. The sports
world never stops, Football never stops, and and football is
officially back. The NFL. It's back, baby, the NFL back tonight,
(01:39):
of course, most notably the team we all care about
around these parts, the Texas Longhorns. Mark took the field
for the first time at frank Denius last all or
yesterday afternoon, I should say a steamy afternoon, one hundred
degree day there, I will say, Mark, before we kind
of get into some of the highlights from the offense. First,
(02:03):
we'll start with the offensive highlights on what stood out
in the AA excuse me in the seven am hour.
Get to the defense in the eight a m hour. Mark,
real quick. You know a man who is you know,
purports himself as a man of the people, a very
important man here in Aulston.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
His name is Christale Conte. Mark.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
When I tell you this man pull up in a
full suit and the heat, in the heat, I will have.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
To text you.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
I tweeted it out those of you if you follow
me on Twitter at erics Henry Underscore, I tweeted out
the picture of Christale Conte Mark, and listen, I'll give
him credit. You know, sometimes you see the players, you know,
they get an escort, right, they get the you know,
they hop on the golf court and golf cart. Excuse
me and ride over. I don't know if Christelle Conte
walked from his office, but I didn't see him get
a ride. And that man for a good at least
(02:48):
thirty forty minutes, Mark, one hundred degree heat full suited
up Chrisdale.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Conte is so rich he got one to respect the
gadgety with the air conditioning, the fan like you don't
see it. But that dude right there, Man, you can't
have money. He always looked like a million bucks. Cannot
hide money, indeed. But Mark, this is how I kind
of figured we would do this, right. So of course,
typically I would be joining the show at seven thirty
(03:14):
four to talk all things Texas. But I've been here
all week and we'll have a guess in that spot.
So Mark, what I figured we do is I was
out there yesterday. Is there anything in particular.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
I'll let you start off, anything particular that you are
curious about from the offensive side of the ball that
you want to know about, and I can answer the
question and we can go from there.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Oh, let's go. I got you.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
The number one thing is who got the line share
of the start and carries at running back.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
Yeah, you know, it was interesting so to kind of
let the audience in and how they did it that
first day, not in pads, so you know, no hitting yet, Mark,
you know that, remember yesterday we're talking no clack, no
click clack, we're talking with the sound of that click clack.
Not there yet, But it was interesting. Yes, when Trey
von Wisener. Of course, you know, still slayd to be
that number one back. That still appears to be the case.
(04:00):
But I kind of give a rundown of kind of
how things went in the backfield.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
C J.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Baxter.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Mark looks to be healthy, but of course you know
when you suffer an injury like he did. He did,
of course have not just a brace, but he had
a sleeve as well over that rehabilitated me. So there's that.
He looked very good. Filled in with the second trigger.
I'll give you another guy, Mark, one of your guys
who you love to call him this last year and brother,
he looks bigger and badder.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Baby Rhino. Oh no, you said bigger, bigger.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Oh my goodness, he was already to twenty five, So
what is he.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
To thirty five?
Speaker 5 (04:37):
Jerk Gibson and Christian Clark? Mark, and I want to
pass it back to you on this because you can
talk about, you know, someone as an athlete who's fought
through injuries. Mark, don't you remember a time when an
achilles you were done?
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Like Correl? It was over.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
It was like cancer Christmas, Like if you tore your achilles,
they would be like, hey man, I need you to
take a few days off and then I need you
to quit the business.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
I mean, it's incredible, Mark, you gonna you can have
to pull up one of these days at practice availably
so you can see Christian Clark. He looks, I mean,
modern medicine is real. He looks better than ever. His
frame is just so it's built. It's just amazing. How
how to be honest, Mark, The word comes to mind
(05:24):
is athletic.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
These guys can look coming off of these serious injuries.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna go back.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Everybody.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Only the people forty five fifty years old are gonna
get this reference. We can rebuild him. It's gonna take time.
It's gonna take money, he'll be stronger, he'll be faster,
like six million dollar man, y'all. For y'all that didn't
know it, I google it, That's what y'all.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Young kid. My daughter tells me that.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
All the time, and I'll ask her a question and
she'll say, day, all you gotta do is google that.
And I'm like, but I asked you. You're my Google,
You're my fact checker. Oh man, Mark, Google is your friend. Indeed,
but I could certainly appreciate that, No doubt, I'll be
googling the six million dollar Man when we get off
the air here.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
But no, I mean listen to answer you. You don't
know I do not. I do not, sir. Well, oh
my god, man, I'm Eric. How old you again? I
just turned thirty four?
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Oh yeah, so that's pat you one of those young people,
son of a gun.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Don't make me feel old on here, Eric, listen, Hey,
you know we could detour for a second. Corey Mos
shot the corbos a kview. He came on and was
supposed to be the one person with hair right, and
he decided to cover up with a do rag. I
guess I will be the person who you know, for
for the purposes of this week. It kind of brings
down the other age of the show a little bit.
So I got some things to google. But no that
(06:48):
the running back room mark looked good. I want to
go to some of the big boys right because I
know you.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Come on man, talk about it. Appreciate.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
I'm gonna play sound in the second hour about this.
But that battlet right tackle mark is real. When I
asked Steve Sarkejen, it was one of the last questions
we snuck in during his media availability after practice, and
I just asked him, Hey, you know, Steve, what are
you looking for from the battlet right tackle and mark?
He said tooth words that I know a guy of
(07:17):
your elk, a guy cut from your cloth, will appreciate.
He said, he wants to see some feistiness and nastiness
out of Nick Brooks and Andre Kojo. Excuse me, I said,
Nick Brooks, Andre Kojo and Brandon Baker, who are competing
for that starting job at right tackle. So that's certainly
something to keep an eye on. But the rest of
the offensive line pretty much looked as we would expect.
(07:39):
You know, Trevor Goosby at left tackle Nato and Azoula
left guard, Cole Hudson at center, right guard DJ Campbell.
Of course, the two guys competing at right tackle. It
did appear in Mark that there's an emphasis and you
would expect this right to kind.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Of get it.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
It's day one, you know, so there's no starters quote
unquote set in stone yet, but it appeared that there
was an emphasis to get as many offensive linemen just
feeling comfortable because look, yeah, I don't have wood to
knock on. I'm sure Steve Sarkisan's got some of it
in his office. If one of those guys goes down.
There is not a lot of experience Mark behind the
starters quote unquote starters at offensive line. So that's where
(08:18):
things hold up there. But that right tackle spot Mark,
and listen, you got two big boys. Andre Kojo out
of Mansfield, Grand Prairie six' fourth memory starts me correct
three thirty, and then you have Brandon Baker, the four
star recruit out of California six four, three hundred and
eight pounds. Whoever emerges from that job or emerges from camp.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
I think Texas will be in good shape.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
But to pass it back to your feistiness and nastiness
is what Steve Sarkigan wants to see from those two
young men.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
That's awesome. I also want to know about my guy,
Trey Owens. How sharp did he look? And people don't
realize Trey Owens is six'. Five he's, like you, know
right at two hundred and twenty, pounds you, know oh,
like so he's not a small. Guy he doesn't look
small when he stands next To, art so the cupboard
(09:08):
is full when it comes to.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Quarterback how did he? Look?
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Mark it's interesting you point To treyon's size because you
see the quarterbacks out there and, listen kJ lacy true.
Freshman he is not a small. Man he's like six
foot you, know he's A Russell wilson type, build a
thicker guy who's a little.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Shorter but he looks like a little person compared.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
To Trey opens And Arch manning And Matt caldwell out
there right, who as you, said With, owens every bit
of six, five two hundred and twenty five, pounds tray look.
GOOD i think In Steve sarkan did talk about the
backup quarterback competition With Trey oons And Matthew, caldwell knowing
that those guys again looking for consistency out of those.
Two the thing With, caldwell and this is just my,
(09:49):
perspective his, Arm, Mark, listen he can make the, throws
but there does appear to be a little bit of
a you, know a little bit of, zip a little
bit of velocity that you don't see From Matthew caldwell
that you see compared to A Trey owens or an Arch.
Manning But trey, AGAIN i think he had a good.
DAY i think that the issue with, him and really
(10:10):
all the quarterbacks are meaning for the back quarterback, job.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
It's just gonna be. Consistency, Mark, yeah, WELL i mean
you you wanted to be. Consistent but his his job
is being an insurance, policy right like he's He's. Farmers He's.
Farmers is not a sponsor for. Us but just so y'all,
Know i'm always pushing for. Bucks so if there's A
(10:34):
farmers out there that wants to throw us some, cash
we will talk about. You you know who you. Are
but he's an insurance. Policy like, so, Uh lacy is
a project for what's going to happen in the, future
and he needs to learn that. System and get all
of these reps as many reps as he can, get
(10:55):
and then we'll go from. There BUT i DON'T i
don't see for any foreseeable future in a place where
anybody jumps over Tray.
Speaker 5 (11:06):
Owens, yeah and you, know it's interesting in terms of
if someone can jump over From it's gonna be a,
competition no doubt about.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
It but that is segment.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
One other Morning, kickoff we got plenty to jump.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Into over two hours Airic.
Speaker 5 (11:21):
Henry horns twenty four to, seven the world's Strongest, Man
Mark henry flying high from seven to, Nine morning kickoff
and thirteen hundred.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Zone we'll be.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
Back it is the morning kickoff here ON am thirteen hundred.
Zone of, course thirty days until, kickoff thirty days until.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
The thirty long.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Days Thirty, hey it's gonna be the dog days of
summer for those guys out there in That texas. Heat
but thirty days until Your Texas longhorns take on The
Ohio State buckeyes at The. Horseshoe And, mark we're gonna
pivot away From texas football just for a brief moment
and just talk a couple sports happenings. Here and there
were two stories that caught my, eye AND i know
(12:03):
they caught your attention as. Well let's just start because you, Know,
MARK i know you're from with the phrase you, know
a new, fool AND i don't know IF i don't
know if these are two new fools or JUST i don't,
know but we Know Gilbert arenas and the weird thing
about it is both of them have had you, know
(12:25):
difficult both who were going to, talk but have had
difficult situations over the. Summer gilbert, ings of course his
son in that cyber truck, accident and you, know glad
his son is. Okay but Then, mark he goes and
gets himself caught, up and this caught my, attention you,
know on the interwebs yesterday he goes and gets himself
caught up and it high stakes illegal gambling ring high
(12:49):
stakes poker games that were taking place at one of
His california. Homes he is facing a federal indictment on
account of conspiracy to operate illegal gambling business out of his.
Home it's a, Charge mark that you could face five
years in prison each charge And kilbritain classic Gil arina's
Fashion mark tempting. Fate he posted a video On instagram
(13:11):
and him dancing down the stairs, saying can't hold, me,
baby they can't hold.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
Me, MARK i don't know what to say about, that,
MAN i do ud let me let me do?
Speaker 1 (13:24):
It?
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Please oh please miss the cott.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
It you don't know that. Either you don't know that
term means you gotta be old. Deal but, uh my
whole thing is about. This you play stupid, games you
get stupid. Prizes And Gilbert arenas knew what he was
doing was. Illegal he knew that he could put somebody in,
danger uh at any. Time his family and the look
(13:49):
on his family right now is, one especially with his.
Son you, know success is a powerful the OWNERANT i
mean man just blocks away all the. Negativity his son is,
injured so he can't even you can't even let his greatness.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Take over for him right.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Now it's just all the evidence points to, you And
gilbert is failing everybody around.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Him Like I'm.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
I'm a lot harder on athletes because it has been
so easy for me to do some corrupt. Things but
when you have ethics and morals and your goal is
to make things, better like you don't have time for that.
Foolishness AND i feel like that a lot of, athletes
(14:45):
not Just Gilbert. Arenas i'm not just dog piling him
while he's. Down but don't get into news and then
people won't talk about. You people got to do.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Better mark the thing that is fascinating to. Me And
i'm sure you remember this. Story i'm Sure marcus remembers
it as. Well, right you, said play stupid, games win stuper.
Prizes we're talking about a guy In Gilbert, Arenas mark,
who if you may, remember about fifteen years ago or,
so brought a loaded weapon into the locker room and
(15:18):
got himself suspended for fifty games or.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Whatever it was with The Washington.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
Wizards, yeah and you, Know netflix did a great documentary
on that situation where you, know his teammate who he you,
know was, Pretending, Hey i'm gonna shoot. You you know
that teammate was about that. Life, Mark, yeah he was about.
THAT i was just about to say that that teammate was, like,
hey don't bring a firearm here for, play because this
(15:44):
could be a situation had half of The Washington wizards
locker room scrambling out of the locker room because they're,
thinking oh my, gosh a gunfight is about to break.
Out but my point in making, This marc is this
is a forty three year old man who you think
should be mature enough at this, point after having made
hundreds of million dollars in THE, nba after having gone
through what he went through in terms of having his
livelihood taken away from being, suspended and then with his
(16:06):
Son mark at a certain, point do you just not, Learn.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Oh my. Gosh there's a lot of people that they
they're described by this term can't get. Right and you,
know you know what that term is that that term
is left for people that they know. Better but they
find a certain toughness in doing What people that can't
(16:32):
rise to the level that they rose to and get
the worldwide recognition and respect that's not good.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Enough they find.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
More they get more joy out of a gangster that
they grew up, with saying hey, man you did. That
come hang out with. Us that's more important than going
and watching your kid in a, concert or seeing one
of your children do something, specially or watching your wife
(17:02):
excel in her education or business or whatever. Like can
we can we give light and credit to the people
that are doing the positive. THINGS i hate it when
people like this take up the timeline these Like Jerry,
jones man like Just i'm gonna do the negative SO
i can get. Press i'm tired of talking about these, foods.
Speaker 5 (17:24):
And you know it's It's, unfortunately it's a perfect segue
Into Shannon. Sharp of, course THE Nfl hall Of famer
had a great gig AT.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
Espn we know he was accused.
Speaker 5 (17:35):
Of an assault and you know that ended up being
settled AND espn take the the you, know made the
decision to let him. Go But, MARK i want to
play this sound for you because we talked about this
a little bit in the pre show AND i thought
you summed it up well in terms, of, hey don't do,
that you, know don't do, anything and you won't have
to face. Repercussions Shannon sharp accepted his fate FROM, espn
(17:57):
but noted one, thing and we got sound here right
now gets.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Started, Obviously i'm sure everybody's heard the news by now
THAT i will not be returning TO. ESPN i found
out this information a little earlier in the, week and
really the only thing THAT i really ask, is, like,
guys could we wait Until? Monday my brother's going into
The Pro Football hall Of. FAME i really wanted to
be about, him AND i wanted to be about my.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
Family.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
Mark you, Know Sterling sharp probably better THAN i, do
BECAUSE i just remember the tail end of his career
as a. Kid but talking about someone who, tragically you,
know his career was cut short through the neck injury
and looked to be you know for those. MEN i
remember it was with The Green Bay, packers and he
looked to me on the way to A hall Of
(18:44):
fame career before the injury finally gets in and now
his Day mark is overshadowed by his.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Brother, Well i'm gonna tell you right now just to
put in perspective about stern And. Sharp stern And sharp
was equal To Jerry, rice equal To Steve, large and
equal to any top tier wide receiver that were in that.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
Error that's.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
He and, actually if you want to make a, Comparison Deebo,
Samuel Sterling sharp was A Deebo samuel before that was
A Deebo samuel could play running, back wide, RECEIVER.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Hvac anything you needed him to.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Do he could, do stretch the, field go across the,
middle run the designer. Routes anything he could do at.
All that's why he's in The hall Of. Fame but
For shannon to plead for his brother to have the
spotlight is. Honorable but we all know, that you, know
him asking for that is like asking for a million
(19:45):
dollars from. Somebody the press is not.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
Going to give him any special. Treatment it just you,
know and it.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
Sucks it's kind of, yeah like you, said it sucks
a sad BECAUSE i Remember mark seeing the video of
you Know, mark they do these videos where they have
A hall Of famer who's connected to the player that
is going into The hall Of. Fame they try to
have that, person you, know meet them at their house and, say,
HEY i got your gold, jacket welcome To, canton, Right
and of course we saw how emotional it was When
(20:15):
Shannon sharp pulled up at his brother's. House his brother
was down in the, basement you, know thinking this day
would never come right because his career was shut, short
was cut, short excuse, me as you, mentioned due to,
injury but a great player during his.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
Time and it was a beautiful.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
Video, man how emotional Both shannon And Sterling sharp. Were
the fact that now you, know both brothers would be
in The hall Of. Fame listen doesn't take away from the.
Accomplishments you, Know Sterling sharp will be in The hall Of.
Fame but just to how this cloud over the, family
it's it's it's.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Horrible it's, horrible it really.
Speaker 7 (20:44):
Is but you know, what speaking Of shannon's, shop what's
most disappointed is the quarterbacks that he had during the
most of his career and he finally get a quarterback
that can get get him in the ball and that's
when he suffers the.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
Injury, yeah, Yeah Brett, Favre, Right, yeah it just goes
to show you so got to be accountable for your.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Actions they account for your.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Situations but all in, all hope the weekend is somewhat
salvageable for The sharp.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Family All, right we will be back in a.
Speaker 5 (21:13):

Speaker 8 (22:33):
Looked here man, like but they were ready to play,

kind of the cliche, stuff you, know, Reality but like guys,
think just excited to be back on the.
Speaker 6 (22:44):
Field you. Know granted it was like you.
Speaker 8 (22:47):
Said pretty hot after like you, know we all felt.
It but that's football maybe you, know that's what kinds
of the. Territory so But.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Mark, Levin I'm i'm gonna say this and as gently
and ELOQUENTLYZ i. Can how does it feel to be
the only man on the screen with hair on his?
Speaker 4 (23:05):
Head this is this is the Bald Radio.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Society and you know you're making me feel a little
subconscious with all that hair on your.
Speaker 8 (23:16):
HEAD i ain't even thinking about, it, man you KNOW
i like to keep a fresh cut.
Speaker 6 (23:22):
OFF i was just. Clean, man LOOK i look at clean.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Big that's big heat with. Me that's big heat with.
Me that's like coming on screen with your pajamas. On
next time you come, on you have got to take
the dow Rag off. Man everybody knows you're working on your,
waves but you can put put a little slick down
on it and they come.
Speaker 4 (23:59):
Back, man come on showing that we got.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
The new cut here working on you working on a
new you, know a new.
Speaker 5 (24:06):
Looks it is a little something new he's working on
if you're just. Changing we're run By Levon whittaker of
k X A. N LEV i want to ask you.
This you, know you were also AT sec media, days
and of course it feels like, we you, know are
contractually obligated to not go more than ten minutes without
mentioning Arch. Manning what were your impressions of Arch manning
at media? Days and then what were your impressions of
(24:27):
him on the first day of, Camp BECAUSE i know
you weren't here last year during, camp but it felt
to me like there was a noticeable, difference not necessarily
a bad or, good but noticeable difference in the level
of vocalness from the quarterback position Between quinn yours and Arch.
Speaker 8 (24:43):
Manning, YEAH i was gonna say, that, Man i've seen
a couple of quarterbacks around my time to media days
and things like that and really throw out to see
you and talking to him WHEN i was in the
order dag and archers boy as young as he is
to not have that for time starting, roll you, know until,
now the dude just seemed mad, comfortable but in a good.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
Way you.
Speaker 8 (25:06):
Know the reality for him, is you, know he hasn't
played a ton and he hasn't played, much but he
feels comfortable enough and understands that he has work to
do and that he hasn't done anything. Yet so you,
know THAT'S i don't know what you call. That you,
know obviously it could be just coaching from his from
(25:27):
his family god because because of his last. Name but
it just seems like we just know what he. Pits
he and how to talk to the, media which is.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
Important that certainly stands out for sure in terms of
just his poise with the. Media you, Know mark asked
about this in the first. SEGMENT i want to pose
it to. You how did the running back room look to?
You BECAUSE i will say, this they look, big and
they looked at, athletic that's for, sure a little.
Speaker 8 (25:52):
Loaded they're running that room little load at. All like,
oh you, know OBVIOUSLY i, wasn't LIKE i, SAID i
wasn't here last. Year we know What trey wise and
did look at the highlights and at the, stats.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
Like who's the real number one?
Speaker 8 (26:05):
Here who's all these guys are, big, fast and like
they pull, confidence pretty vocal with one. Another so that's
that's WHAT i took away from Yesterday's uh they won
a fall.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
Camps, WELL i think one of the big deals is
is going to be the battles of, Attrition like are
the are the teams that play Against texas going to
be able to have the depth to hang with a
fresh guy coming in that can start pretty much everywhere
(26:36):
else in the. Conference and when you, say, hey, Man
texas got three running backs that can start at every
school or at least push every running back for. Reps
and they're all in the same. Backfield like that same
thing with the wide receivers and.
Speaker 4 (26:55):
The defensive.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
Backs texas is so deep at defensive, back, linebacker and defensive.
Line now they just have so many. Guys it's gonna
they're gonna overwhelm people with that. Freshness like you're never
gonna see a group of guys get just dog. Tired
so you gotta do that at. Practice if if the
(27:20):
yesterday you, know was indicative of what the future is
gonna be like in thirty. Days, UH i think team's
gonna have a hard time With. Texas leve.
Speaker 5 (27:33):
On let me kind of piggyback off Of mark there
and ask you. This you, know he talked about the,
Receivers Parker, livingstone, RIGHT i feel like he's a guy
that we're not necessarily talking a ton about because a
lot of the conversations Been ryan wing going his lasick
and the new eyes you know now that you can
see the, ball you, know and mean mostly As mark said,
it and of Course DeAndre, moore who shouldn't get lost
in the. Shuffle but Did Parker livingstone stand out to
(27:55):
you in the way he did to?
Speaker 4 (27:55):
Me?
Speaker 6 (27:56):
Yeah, MAN i, like you, know we HAVE tv people we.
RECORDED i didn't a.
Speaker 8 (28:01):
Lie for some, reason my camera kept on going Towards
Parker livings and LIKE i was watching a dude throughout
their entire, Practice and you, KNOW i try to keep
an eye on guys Like wingo And Andre moore and
obviously molting the transfer fense. Camp but for some, reason
dude just stood out much taller in the other, book
at the same height as ring as Ring, GO i,
believe but just looked super. Athletic you, know good, hands
(28:23):
good foot, placement you, know good for work in. General
get off the line and that's that's a. Lot that's
a lot for a. Guy you, know just in the
day one of, practice it seemed, like you, know this
is repetition, wise he's, comfortable you.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
Know from my, Perspective, mark you, know you know you
weren't out, there but you Know levon AND i.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Were.
Speaker 5 (28:40):
Uh probably the most fired up from my vantage point
That Steve sarkegan was yesterday was when Arch manning connected
on a deep corner Pattern chris against, here it's against Her,
mark so NO dB is biding. Him but probably the
most fired up he was when when Arch manning connected
With Parker. Livingstone uh in the end zone there on that.
Corner before we got out, Here levon did want to
ask you. This you, know you are still a relative
(29:01):
newcomer To, Austin, texas the area that's near and dear
To mark's, heart just what are your first? Impressions real
quick for, you you're gonna have to break your first
impressions Of, Austin texas in your first year living.
Speaker 8 (29:11):
Here, Man i'm From, Indiana, MAN i ain't GONNA i
complain every day about how hot it.
Speaker 6 (29:17):
Is, Though i'll hold you, up. H i talked To
mark about that sc.
Speaker 8 (29:23):
Media Then i'll let, know like you get real out
there and they like it ain't even touched you, know
the real summer time. Yet BUT i can't get this
good off. MAN a lot of good food out, here.
MAN i have a good BEFORE i got out of,
here BUT i got one. Now you, Know i've been
after about six, months so, uh food is great, man
good site, though but, yeah that's not it for me so.
FAR i haven't really gotten out too much. Real i've
(29:45):
been staying, in trying to stay locked into just getting
to know this, team, man because the football.
Speaker 6 (29:50):
Season out here is.
Speaker 8 (29:51):
Different uh, yeah you, know it's Like indiana and, basketball
so it's it's like The.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Mecca Well i'll tell you WHAT i could, do like
a twenty minute stands up On Gary, indanda But i'm
not gonna do.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
It I'm I'm i'm definitely a.

so much for taking the time out for. Us we're
gonna go and take a little break and uh you
know we're gonna we're gonna work on you we're gonna

(30:53):

Radio now, again you got to go back and make
sure you're. Listening but today's keyword is prequel and this
ONE i will spell for you just in case you

(31:32):
word so make sure as the fourth of five, words
to make sure you get your tickets to see Ghost
august fourteenth At Moody.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
Center, mark we talked To.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Tom i'm laughing because you sound like Mister, rogers which
is another term that all of it google it, like you,
know when you start spelling.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
SOMETHING i. Hate. Kids the word of today is. Prequel see, now.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
LISTEN I i might a little young for you, know
six million dollar, man BUT i do remember a little Mister,
rogers so that one wasn't over my head. There but,
LISTEN i want to make sure the folks can go See.
Ghosts i'll give them a little bit of assistances in
case they need. It, Mark we're gonna pivot from the
forty acres here and go to THE nfl and. Listen
the season kicks off. Today you have The hall Of fame,
game AND i just want to ask. You you, know,
(32:19):
listen a lot of rookies From Texas football will be
opening THEIR nfl careers this week and over the next few.
Weeks but, Overall, mark it could Be, texas could be.
Anybody what rookies are you? EXCITED i guess to, say
which rookies are you excited to? See, Man i'm going
to give you my top.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Three like Cam Ward, IS i think gonna be a
lot better quarterback than people think he's going to.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
Be And i'm not gonna say that he's going to, be.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
You, know a pro bowler this year or BUT i
think he'll throw of you, know thirty five hundred to
four thousand.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
Yards he'll he.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
May do twenty five, touchdowns but he also may do
seventeen to twenty interceptions because he's a rookie and he's
gonna take. Chances golden At Green, BAY i think that
he is going to be a player that is going
(33:27):
to get a lot of looks and he's gonna GET i,
mean it's gonna be hard pressed to find somebody that's
gonna get out there into the deep water faster than he.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
Can but his superpower is he's an incredible route.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Runner and when you're fast and you can run routes
in THE, nfl you don't have a scheme usually to
where you have to double team. Somebody they're not gonna
double team in right off the. Bat SO i guarantee
these first eight to ten games he's gonna torch some
teams AND i can really see that. Happening and number,
(34:08):
one the running back at The chargers that came from.
Ours his name escapes, me but he that's a two
hundred and thirty pound guy that ran a four to
four flat. Forty you're talking About Mario On, hampton Correct, Hampton, Yeah,
(34:28):
Hampton North, Carolina Maryon, Hampton, Yeah, Hampton like you can't
teach what he, has you, know you can't teach six,
one two hundred and twenty five to two hundred and
thirty pounds and you run that fast like he can
hit you and hurt you real. Bad and you know
they always, say what do you want to be the
(34:50):
hammer or the? Nail that dude is indeed the. Hammer
and those three, GUYS i think we're gonna everybody was
talking all genty genty is a, lot but gent is
gonna have nine guys in the box a lot of.
Times And hampton is, gonna LIKE i, said it's gonna
take some game film in order to, realize, hey we
(35:10):
need to put another guy in the box because this
guy's killing.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
Us and that might take eight. Games, Mark i'm gonna
piggyback off of you.
Speaker 5 (35:20):
THERE i will go With ashton Gent and again it's
not That i'm thinking he's gonna come out and light
the world on. Fire but the thing that intrigues me
about him And, mark you, know This farewell is a running.
Back you only got so many you, know so many,
carries so many touches you can. TAKE i guess in
wrestling they say you're bump. Card, right that's a, phrase you,
know so many stuck stuck about you?
Speaker 8 (35:41):
There?
Speaker 5 (35:41):
Right you, know come, on, man what you know about
a bump Card as a running? Back you only got
so many carries that you can you can, take and
he got a lot of them At Boise state because
he was the. Offense, right some Curious, marcus is he
gonna be a ten year? Guy or is he gonna
be a you, know four or five year? Guy and
then maybe his body wears, down so you have that
aspect of. Course Kelvin Banks, JUNIOR i will go with
(36:03):
A Texas longhorn as, well excited to see what he can.
Do almost An, indianapolis, say you, know as a long
win there who's Struggling indiapolis to get the ball anywhere
in his? Radius and Ad, mitchell but What Kelvin banks
can do In New. Orleans and, last but not, least
and this is the ONE i want to. Say you,
know it's the most time For. Mark how Is Travis
(36:23):
hunter going to be used in THE? Nfl are they
truly going to use him as a two way?
Speaker 4 (36:28):
Guy is it going to be a? Situation and this
is kind of my thinking on.
Speaker 5 (36:32):
It, MARK i want to give you a chance just
to get a thought and before we go to, break
is do you, say, Maybe, hey this, game we know
we have a match up at cornerback that we can,
Win so we want to make you a receiver for
most of the game this game and then maybe the next. Game,
hey we know we have a match up at receiver
that we can. Win we're going to make you a
cornerback most of that. Game what's your thought on, That? Mark,
WELL i mean there's football is chess and. Checkers like
(36:57):
sometimes you play a lot of checkers in. Football it's just.
Simple but with somebody like, him you can play.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Chess you can play him at wide receiver and then
when you when teams start going in three wide receiver,
packages you slip him out there and the next thing you,
know he's got interception and he's taking it to the
house because they're not expecting your third corner to be
out of depth at you, know your third best, receiver
(37:27):
And travis is obviously deserving of being a. Starter but
you can say it on the on the flip side
of that. Corner you know you can play him at
corner right, away and you slip him in in the
slot and have him be the third wide receiver against
your third. Corner that's not gonna bowl well for, defenses
(37:49):
so you just use him when you need. Him he
is a matchup, nightmare no.
Speaker 5 (37:52):
Doubt all, right world Strongest, Man, mark and we're losing
him after this, Hour, mark catch it, tomorrow my.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Man all, right, guys gotta go make the. Donuts got
your go bake the.
Speaker 5 (38:03):
Donus, Indeed Morning kickoff will be back in a.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
MOMENT am thirteen Hundred, Zone Austin's Sports. Radio we.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Have the, technology.
Speaker 6 (38:15):
We have the cakeby to make the world's first behind.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
That it is the Morning kickoff here ON am thirteen
hundred The, Zone Mark, henry The world's Strongest, Man mike
Hartch Hardball hargs on a well deserved, Vacation Mark. HENRY
i had to go make a little bit of money
doing his, thing being the renaissance man that he, Is
Eric henry of twenty four to Seven sports Flying, solo
(38:40):
but Not quie because of COURSE i got my, Man
Marcus spears behind the scenes holding everything. Down we're not
leaving you quite without the World's Strongest. Man we will
still have The World's strongest take coming up at eight thirty.
Four we also Have Leah van of cron Dot. Com
does a great job covering all Things Houston, astros all
Things Houston. Texans of, course she is a law A
(39:03):
TEXAS x excuse, me and did a great job Covering
texas for a Lone Star.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
Live we'll have her on as.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
Well want to continue The texas football conversation. Here AS
i mentioned in the first, hour yesterday was the first
practice of preseason, Camp. Marcus you, KNOW i like to
call it preseason, camp right because fall camp feels weird
because you AND i are having a conversation and the
break about This texas. Heat you being a Native texan From,
houston of, course me being From, florida ain't nothing about this.
Speaker 4 (39:30):
Weather. Fall, yeah, yeah it is basically summer junior.
Speaker 8 (39:36):
Or.
Speaker 7 (39:36):
Summer the postgame show because basically spring is like pre,
summer prequel to, summer and then you got, summer and then.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
Post Summer marcus went real.
Speaker 5 (39:46):
Quick before we, again we will get To texas, football
going to toss with some sound Of steve starkejan his
thoughts on the first, practice his thoughts on the battle
at right, tackle his thoughts on some defensive players as.
Well but let me ask, you, Man i've been here two.
Years when does Summer you think summer ends because it's
always hot for.
Speaker 7 (40:05):
Whatever, Reason summer ends like around like Late, september Early,
october and then it turns into supreme. Winter sometimes sometimes
it just turns into supreme. Winter sometimes it goes back
to an actual short fall until like then when we
get to the, winter then it's like thirty something.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Degrees for some strange, REASON i can't admit that was an.
Speaker 5 (40:30):
Adjustment is the fact THAT i now live in the
area where there are winters, right and it doesn't mean
winter like it's going to snow all the, time ALTHOUGH
i know.
Speaker 4 (40:37):
It it has snowed In ausoin.
Speaker 7 (40:38):
Before every once in a while it decides to dump
all the snow that ever exists in the city Of
austin and we're not.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
Ready the city's never ready for. It of, course of
course you can't be living In. Texas you, know it's
not like living in a northern. Climate but, YEAH i
always find it interesting you call it fall, camp because
ain't nothing fall about, that whether we're out, there.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
Unless you, falling unless you're, falling no doubt about.
Speaker 5 (40:59):
That but let's hear from the head football coach of
The Texas, Longhorn Steve, starkejian his thoughts on the team's
first practice when they took the fields Of Frank denis.
Speaker 9 (41:10):
Yesterday you, KNOW i thought the guys overall it was
a good first. DAY i thought that they were intentional
with their. Approach it was obviously a warm day and
they fought. Through you, know, naturally as practice goes, on
fatigue sets, in and that's where we got to tap
(41:31):
in more to the mental, intensity the mental, focus, uh
the mental toughness that's needed when fatigue sets.
Speaker 10 (41:38):
In and that's something that obviously training camp is for
that we'll work. On but a lot of guys got
a lot of reps, today which was. GREAT i thought
it was.
Speaker 9 (41:46):
COMPETITIVE i thought we'll look, fast but, again you, know
it's the very beginning stages of training.
Speaker 10 (41:52):
Camp and but LIKE i, SAID i thought it was
a good.
Speaker 9 (41:54):
Start but we you, know as, always we got plenty
to go fixed, tonight watching the teams of staff and
and meet with the players and get that cleaned up
and you, know get going into day two, installed you.
Speaker 5 (42:06):
Know and that's about what you'd expect to hear From
steve on day. One you, know one of the more interesting.
THINGS i think a lot of people because you're kind
of chomping at the bit for football after being away
from it for six, months and a lot of people
are looking for instant, answers right like how does you
know run BACK x look? Right or how does you
know how's arch? Looking or so on and so, forth And,
marcus it really is just day one in the sense
(42:27):
of a lot of this is. Install And i'll give
you a good example of WHAT i mean, There cal
Transferred jack. Injuries there's a lot of excitement about. Him
i've written about him extensively throughout the, offseason and we
noticed when he was working in terms of who was
getting the tight end reps, right you Saw Spencer, shannon
you Saw Jordan, WASHINGTON i don't want to say working
(42:48):
ahead of, him because, again it wasn't really a death chart.
Thing But steve did an excellent job of pointing this
out when he was asked About jack, yesterday, saying, hey
yesterday really was his first practice and this is a
new offense for. Him so it's not, that oh, man
the new cal transfer is behind the two guys in death.
Chart it's literally that's his first. Practice he's learning what to,
(43:09):
do as are a lot of, freshmen a lot of,
newcomers and just the guy's getting their feet wet. Again, yes,
yes it's usually there's always a, little, uh little curve
that you got to judge. On and also the fact
that when you're when you become a, veteran you start
to pick up things faster than the young.
Speaker 7 (43:28):
Guys so he's not behind the. Curve he's he's going
to catch up with it before before we get to real. Action,
yeah no doubt about.
Speaker 5 (43:36):
That and just a little a little tidbit on injuries,
again he looks every bit of the player That Jeff,
Banks Steve sarkisian and company thought they were, getting just
in terms of from a frame, perspective, right you, know
six' four lean about two thirty five to forty, looks,
athletic look, you know really good coming in and out of.
His Route so titan is not a Position that i'm.
Worried about but that's just an example, kind of, you
(43:57):
Know Emphasizing steve sarkejan talking about just, day one looking
to get, the fundamentals make sure everyone's got their sea legs.
Under him there were a couple, Of people marcus talking about.
That heat we saw a couple of people lose. Their lunch,
you know you got to get him back. Into, shape,
well yeah that is. The tradition who's gonna be the
first to let? IT go a couple people lost their lunch,
Out there so that's what you're looking to establish on.
Day one but, of course thirty Days until texas football
(44:21):
Heads To. OHIO state i talked about it in the
first Hour with. Mark in one of the biggest position
battles to keep an, eye on it's going to be
that right. Tackle spot just to kind of go into
that a little bit, deeper again it is my expectation
that when you look at the, offensive line you're going,
to see from left, To right trevor goosby a, Left
Tackle nato umazulu at, Left Guard cole hudson. At center
OF Course, dj campbell who, you know they're really expecting
(44:45):
big things. FROM him i can't emphasize. This enough you
know THE company i, work for twenty four To, SEVEN
sports dj came in in the same Class As Kevin,
banks junior Who arguably marcus is one of the best
offensive linemen in, program history definitely one of the most
decorated in. Program HISTORY And dj campbell was considered a
(45:05):
higher tier recruit as opposed to OR or i, should
say Compared To. Kelvin banks so a lot of high
expectations for a guy.
Speaker 7 (45:12):
Like Senior ear are You saying texas has this ability
of getting high.
Speaker 4 (45:17):
TALENTED players i am saying, they DO and i. Know,
THAT listen i am Not.
Speaker 5 (45:22):
A texan I'm still i'm always gonna consider myself a Newcomer,
to texas, you know Even though i've been there a couple.
Of YEARS but i do know that when You say
texas had no issue getting, TALENTED players i know the
issue for a long time around here was turning that talent.
Speaker 4 (45:37):
Into, wins yeah that's when the coaching start, coming in and.
Speaker 5 (45:40):
That's What steve sarkisan's done an excellent job of twenty
five wins over the last. Two years BUT like, i
mentioned that right tackle spot gonna turn some sound here
pitches them sound here in, A Second steve sarkisan talking
about the Battle Between andre Kojo And. Brandon baker if
you look, at it this is when the way they
like to frame it is saying that this offensive line is,
not young. But inexperienced this is the most inexperienced spot
(46:01):
on the. Offensive Line trevor gooseby did get some starts.
Last year Nato un zulus played over his three years
about one hundred and fifteen hundred and. Sixty Snaps, cole hudson,
of course was a starter as a. TRUE Freshman dj
campbell a multi. Year starter you have two Guys and
Baker and kojo who their only real. Playing time baker a,
True sophomore kojo a third, year sophomore was last year
(46:25):
and it would been less than sixty. Snaps total let's
Hear From steve sarkisian talking about that battle at.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
RIGHT tackle i know it's early only, day one but
what are you looking for out of that battle at?
Speaker 11 (46:34):
Right?
Speaker 9 (46:34):
Tackle, well consistency, YOU know i think one of the
things at.
Speaker 10 (46:41):
Tackle tackles like playing corner.
Speaker 9 (46:43):
On defense, you know you can be a wow player
at corner or at tackle and have pancake blocks and all.
These things but when you make a mistake at those,
two positions a lot of times.
Speaker 10 (46:57):
Are catastrophic.
Speaker 9 (46:58):
You know you give up, touchdown passes and you give
up sacks sometimes, sack fumbles. You know AND so i
want to see a level of consistency out of those
guys at right tackle for both, those guys, you know
we're pushing them to do is get out of, their
shell get out of their. Comfort zone probably a little
more nasty if you want to be to, Be HONEST
(47:19):
and i think we saw that today which. Was encouraging
you saw those guys both feisty at times with the.
Defensive players But And ethan burke will do that, to,
You right colin will do that.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
To you they proud you a.
Speaker 9 (47:30):
Little bit uh might that might have been a, little
intentional but because we want to see how are they going,
to respond.
Speaker 10 (47:36):
You know and when the real. Fires GOING and, i thought,
you KNOW like, i said not, in PADS but i thought.
Speaker 5 (47:40):
They responded there was a little bit of A wink
Marcus When steve sarkejen said that might have. Been intentional
and of course the voice you heard at the beginning
of that, clip was mind me ask them the question
a little bit of a wink when he said that
might have. Been intentional he's he's looking to test. These guys, he's,
like listen it's one hundred. Degrees outside you're Gonna Face,
ethan burke go in To Face. Colin simmons let's see what.
Speaker 7 (48:00):
You, got well plan against great talent will make you develop.
Very Fast And, colin simmons, you know you know what
he what He said white number one because. Number, one,
Listen man That's why colin's a. Great quote he's just
just such a. CONFIDENT dude i love that one.
Speaker 5 (48:20):
For sure but SOMETHING else i want to note there
in that quote or that Sound From STEVE sarkisian i,
should say is he, talked about, you know right tackle
or tackle being a spot that's comparable to cornerback right
that when you.
Speaker 4 (48:32):
Make mistakes, it's disastrous.
Speaker 5 (48:34):
It's disastrous and, He said marcus sometimes he gets sacked
sometimes against. TRIP fumbles i don't think that was, a,
coincidence sir BECAUSE if i may give you, A refresher
i don't want to set you up with, a question
but do you remember the Way The ohio state game ended?
Speaker 6 (48:48):
Last?
Speaker 4 (48:48):
Year, oh yeah it was.
Speaker 5 (48:50):
A fumble It Was jack sawyer rushing around Right Tackle.
Cam williams of course you know, was drafted but that
was not km's. Best Rep sacking quin yours Strip Fumble
jack sawyer ninety yards down, the sideline Ending the.
Speaker 4 (49:06):
LONGHORN season i don't think that was.
Speaker 5 (49:08):
A Coincidence as, steve said that sometimes get a strong Strip, Fumble,
marcus yeah definitely that WAS.
Speaker 4 (49:13):
On q definitely WAS on q.
Speaker 5 (49:15):
For sure so definitely still a lot to take from that. First,
practice again, it's early but still a lot. Of takeaways
we'll get into some more. Of them getting the defensive
side of, the Ball And austin native got high Praise From.
Steve sarkisian you will hear that, and more but before
that can be Joined By lea van of cron. Dot
com we'll talk All, things texans All, things Astros and

thirty days a little, bird.
Speaker 4 (50:11):
Today and that was not me saying.
Speaker 7 (50:14):
Thirty days for anyone that heard that voice, right there
that was somebody else and.
Speaker 5 (50:18):
That was not. Me Either so i'll try to do
this a little more gently instead of yelling. At you
there are thirty days Until The texas longhorns kick off
the twenty twenty five Season At. Ohio state and, of
course really quick before we get to, our guests got

Her on twitter At L Van. Underscore sports she does

Speaker 6 (51:10):

It's not my.
Speaker 12 (51:36):
Day off IT'S just i normally coach in the mornings

Speaker 4 (51:43):
Got You, but, leah again appreciate you making. THE time
i cannot thank.
Speaker 5 (51:46):
You enough going to continue some Of the texas talk
before we get to what you're doing down There, in
houston and again you Being a texas, ax you, you
know being really. Closest program of course you covered this
program once before for. Different outlets just curious know ten thousand.
Foot View The quinn yours era, is concluded The arch
manning era. Is underway that is the. Major storyline but
(52:09):
what are you looking for from this text? Football team
just what are? Your, EXPECTATIONS.
Speaker 10 (52:15):
Yeah, i mean, For me i'm very curious TO.
Speaker 6 (52:19):
See cj baxter back in. THE mix.
Speaker 12 (52:24):
I felt like last year the run game was very inconsistent,
at times which which puts a.
Speaker 10 (52:29):
Lot of pressure on the.
Speaker 12 (52:30):
Pass GAME so i really want to see a consistent
run game when it comes to, the. OFFENSE especially i
know That arch manning is obviously like a lot more
Mobile Than quinn, yours WAS but i do think that
it's really important that you're able to rely on another
facet of.
Speaker 10 (52:51):
Your offense AND then i just feel like there's a
lot of new names.
Speaker 12 (52:56):
THIS year, i mean, LAST year i feel like it
was loaded, with veterans and this year you've Got Like
michael DApp and then, on defense and then as far as,
LIKE offense, i mean you've got some younger guys who
have played a little.
Speaker 5 (53:08):
Bit but now a.
Speaker 12 (53:10):
Whole Lot so i'm really curious to see how they
fill all The.
Speaker 5 (53:15):
Question, mark well a player that isn't new and a
player that you covered during your Time covering Texas Is.
Ethan burke, of Course the Austin Native west. Lake product,
you know he was a starter when you were here,
last year a bit in a platoon role Right With
baron sorell in the Emergence Of. Colin Simmons But Leah
steve starkeshan was very High On. Ethan burke and we're
(53:36):
gonna toss with some sound Here and i'll get your
thoughts on the.
Speaker 4 (53:38):
Other Side With trey morris moved.
Speaker 5 (53:41):
To linebacker what are you looking to see Out Of
ethan burke and kind of what are your expectations during?
Speaker 9 (53:45):
This, YEAR well, I thought i think this has Been
for ethan the best, off season the best summer that
he's had in. Our program, you know his commitment to the,
weight room his commitment to. His body, you know he
plays a relentless brand, of football and he's got, great
length he's got GREAT.
Speaker 10 (54:06):
Football iq.
Speaker 9 (54:08):
And so, YOU know i think a lot of Times
with ethan last year. Was tough He and barrassiolla playing
in the, same position, you know and it was tough to,
you know him to get a ton of reps. That
way But with baron, MOVING on I think I think
ethan has really tries to seize. This opportunity and, to
me that Started, in february, you know when we got
going and he had a Really. GOOD spring i would
(54:29):
probably say he was one of the Players of spring.
For us, you, know guys if we were given, out
awards uh and today felt. No different, you know he's
got a, high motor high level, Of intensity he's, very
smart and he really pushes. Our tackles and it's great
for our tackles because one rep you might have To,
block calling which is a different style, of player and the,
next rep now you got A, block ethan who's a
different style.
Speaker 10 (54:50):
Of player And, so.
Speaker 5 (54:52):
Leah you know, YOU guys i mentioned You Covered ethan
burke during your Time. Covering texas two part question for
you just want to ask you kind of your your
recollections of covering and the player he's kind of. Developing
into and the second part of that is two other
guys you Covered In Anthony hill Junior and Michael taff
you know a lot of defensive studs For this longhorn
football team To Where arch manning won't have To.
Speaker 4 (55:12):
Be superman won't have to Be the.
Speaker 5 (55:13):
HEISMAN candidate i say that in air QUOTES because i
have not Called him heisman candidate, just yet but it
seems like the broader culture ball world Is immediately but
he won't have to be that, week one because there
will be Guys Like, ethan Burke Like, michael Taff Like
Anthony hill junior to make plays from the defensive side of.
Speaker 11 (55:28):
The, BALL.
Speaker 12 (55:30):
Yeah I mean i think the defense, was certainly it's
been the story Of this, SARKESIAN era i feel like
the past, two years and, you know that is the
place where you do have guys who have played a
substantial number, of snaps AND so i think it's going
to be a strength. For sure, AND yeah i think
(55:52):
what was interesting to Me About ethan burke was how
like relatively inexperienced he was for like the average college,
football player given that he started playing in high school
because he was primarily a, lacrosse athlete, WHICH like i
don't know why you play lacrosse when you're what six
foot six two or fifty, Nine pounds like that's a waste.
Speaker 10 (56:15):
His face so, TO me i, was like what do
you what do you? Do it what do you mean
you thought you were a?
Speaker 12 (56:21):
Lacrosse ATHLETE and i guess his dad was a head Coach.
At westlake but, you know, TO me i think it's
really cool to have somebody. Like him was three years,
of experience he has played. Substantial reps he knows the
defense backwards. And forwards he's, a LEADER and i think
that it's no surprise to me that he's going to
(56:44):
progress and get better the more playing time that. He
GETS and i mean that sounds, very cliche but when
you put him in a role that maybe potentially starting
and maybe potentially playing, more STEPS then.
Speaker 6 (56:57):
I do feel like that he's going to MAKE some, i.
Speaker 12 (57:02):
THINK yeah i MEAN obviously i Think about texas's red
zone defense last year, and like, you KNOW the A
and m play that we all, remember from, you know
like the, goal LINE and i think that he's really
one of those people who can hold it down and
to be competitive IN, the sec you really have to
be competitive in, the trenches and he's one of.
Speaker 5 (57:22):
Those people She is leah Vanocron dot com shows excellent
job as a sports culture reporter and also the astros,
as WELL and i do Agree. With leo she said
in terms Of ethan, berg's, Size right it's like eventually
you can end up on the. Football field it's like.
Seven footers, you know as zero a, seven footer you're
gonna end up on the block, playing, Basketball RIGHT so
i agree with, You. There leah OF course i got
(57:44):
to ask you About your astros coaches coverage through doing
a great. Job there i'm looking at two stories you
wrote as. Of late could you just talk about the
story you wrote here where, you say, you know what's
it like to be a prospect traded at? The deadline
talk to you on your ideas about the trade that changed.
His career can you.
Speaker 4 (57:59):
Talk about that a. Little, bit.
Speaker 6 (58:01):
Yeah you picked that up quick and that published.
Speaker 4 (58:03):
This, morning.
Speaker 12 (58:05):
Yeah we were Looking at we wanted to look into
like the personal perspective of what it's like to be,
a prospect a young guy who's kind, of like, you.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
Know the.
Speaker 12 (58:20):
Smaller portion of, the, trade right the one that is
not like in, the headlines because you always see, these trades, you're,
like oh here's a, flashy player and then here are
the two prospects that he, comes, With right and that's
exactly What yaner. Diez was and so can you imagine
what it's like to be making your career with one
team and like trying to climb, the ladder doing everything that,
(58:43):
they say and then all of, a sudden one day
you're literally packing your bags and then the next day
you're on a totally new team in a totally. New
organization so it's one thing to move up to a
different team within, an organization is another thing to. Switch organizations,
so yeah he guys fit. That Profile jordaan, alvarez also
(59:03):
but he's hurt, right NOW so i can't talk.
Speaker 6 (59:06):
From Him but.
Speaker 12 (59:08):
Yaier's also like become not only the starting catcher For
the astros over the past, two years but also he
has improved his. Plate discipline he is like third on
the team at home runs.
Speaker 6 (59:23):
RIGHT now, i mean he's made.
Speaker 12 (59:25):
A substantial impact in, the linup and especially for, a
catcher it's.
Speaker 6 (59:30):
Really impressive and.
Speaker 1 (59:31):
SO.
Speaker 11 (59:32):
Yeah i talked to HIM and, i asked, you know
what was, it like and, he, SAID well I thought
i was getting called up to, you know go FROM
single a TO, hi a and then all of a sudden, they're,
like no you, got traded, You know.
Speaker 4 (59:46):
And but he he knew that there was a lot more.
Speaker 12 (59:52):
Upward mobility when it came To, the astros there was
room for him to not, only grow but.
Speaker 10 (59:57):
Also to advance his career.
Speaker 12 (59:59):
Much quicker and so With the astros he moved up
four levels of minor league ball eventually to, you know
making his big league debut in about a, year's time which,
was like which was, you know he had spent four
years at the With the guardians.
Speaker 10 (01:00:18):
And not really moved up more than more.
Speaker 4 (01:00:22):
Than THAT so i thought it was.
Speaker 10 (01:00:25):
Really interesting it was really interesting to talk to him.
Speaker 4 (01:00:28):
About that there you.
Speaker 5 (01:00:30):
Have it She Is leah vange does an excellent job
as a sport and culture reporter crin dot com, and,
listen folks you might see Her On Love Is blind austin.
Pretty soon just little, Teaser. THERE leah i, appreciate you.
My friend thank you for. Making time it Is The
morning cakeoff here On sports radio and Thirteen.
Speaker 4 (01:00:45):
Hundred zone we'll be back in. A moment welcome back
To The. Morning cakeoff it is and Thirteen hundred Zone
and mark are you? Ready, here, yes sir you know
what time? It is what time?
Speaker 1 (01:00:57):
Is?
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
It mark it's time for The The world's strongest taked
by the world's.
Speaker 4 (01:01:02):
Strongest Man Mac us back then they. Didn't. Know Man now.
I'm hot stay all, on.
Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
Me guys my take today is the world's strongest. Math
edition now there was a. Sports writer i'm not gonna
name his name because we're not tight like That and
i'm not giving him, no love but he mapped out
the contracts That the Cowboys Paid, Trevon Diggs, dak Prescott
(01:01:32):
And cedee lamb in the last. Two Years the cowboys
paid in excess of four million dollars More for diggs
than they should have if they had signed. Him Earlier
the cowboys Also Paid dak prescott significantly more than the
market value than if they had signed him that, same
(01:01:53):
year and the latest was last Season Was, ceedee lamb
whose deal.
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
Was over one hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:02:02):
Million Dollars But nicholson dimes, mattered TOO And cd lamb
was paid seven million dollars more than if it would.
Speaker 6 (01:02:15):
Have been.
Speaker 2 (01:02:17):
Probably like before the, season Started, When deebo samuel and
all of those guys started getting those, ridiculous deals they
could HAVE Signed cd lamb for seven million. Dollars less
the math is not math. In y'all the total amount
is over eleven. Million dollars how Much Was derrick henry nine.
(01:02:40):
Million dollars you could Have Signed dereck henry.
Speaker 4 (01:02:42):
Last year.
Speaker 2 (01:02:44):
If you Didn't Sign, dereck henry you could have signed
any of the top elite quarterbacks that were in the free.
Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
Agent, market also you could have signed the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
Defensive Tackle the cowboys struggled on the interior. Defensive line
they had great guys, on perimeter they had great guys on.
The edge but with all of, that money If the
cowboys would have fixed a lot of ills with to
have over eleven million dollars in. Cap space so that,
(01:03:13):
being said now You Have, michael parsons they're gonna have
to do the identical same Thing With michael parsons because
all the crime. Is over now it's time to just.
Pay him and all you, can, say well we're not gonna,
Pay him we're gonna, franchise him which basically gives you
(01:03:36):
the death Sentence With michael parsons because all you have
to say then is you can franchise me one time
And then i'm gonna go into the free agent market
and then you get nothing. For him so my take
is That the cowboys have got to stop making all
of these asinine calls on stretching things out because you
(01:04:00):
want to be ahead of. The timeline, and yeah you
get more pressed because you're not signing these guys and
you're in the news the.
Speaker 4 (01:04:09):
Entire time but is it?
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
Worth that is it worth twelve? Million DOLLARS like i mean,
to me twelve million dollars is a lot. Of money
to a billionaire is not. So much but to a
fan who Loves the cowboys who want to see that,
team succeed we eleven million dollars. Is everything we could
Have Had dereck.
Speaker 4 (01:04:33):
Henry on.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
The team we could have had a franchise. Defensive tackle
so you have to double team.
Speaker 4 (01:04:38):
That guy And Now.
Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
Michael parsons is running wild getting twenty sacks in.
Speaker 4 (01:04:42):
A season so that's that's what.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
We're doing so that's that's my world, Strongest, take eric
and just saying That the cowboys math is?
Speaker 4 (01:04:53):
Not mathing, what's Say? Youth mark two things come. To
mind ONE.
Speaker 5 (01:05:00):
When, I listen i'm a college, football reporter, all right,
YOU know i don't deal in the, pro RANKS but
i would really like to know how much money are
these teams when they haggle and try to wait a
year or wait a period.
Speaker 4 (01:05:13):
Of time how much money are they?
Speaker 5 (01:05:16):
TRULY saving i really would like to know from A,
Because mark i'm gonna try to Give the cowboys ben for.
The doubt right when we spoke About the cowboys earlier,
THIS week I knew i was All Over, Jerry jones
gon try to give them the ben for. The doubt,
can you as, you said the Mathe, and mathew can
they bring, in someone a, cat person someone who can
explain to me how much money they are truly saving
(01:05:37):
by waiting to sign these players on. These contracts, because
eventually as, You've, stated mark you don't have to.
Speaker 4 (01:05:42):
Sign them it's still have to.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
Sign, them eric and you can bring In all you
can bring in two or. Three mathematicians you can bring
in a salary. Cap analyst you can do all of.
This stuff the.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
Whole point Is.
Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
The cowboys they wait so long in order to sign
people that these other guys start getting their deals and
they set. The market when you set the market at a,
defensive end, You Know Trey, hendrickson cosby, YOU know i
(01:06:15):
always take it Back To patrick ewing Here In. New
York patrick ewing had the most genius contract of. All
time he got an average of the top five players
regardless of position IN the nba for like, ten years
even when he was not a top ten player or top,
(01:06:35):
five player he still got top. Five money so like
that's kind of What the cowboys model. Should be they, Should,
say okay well we're gonna sign you for, five years
and we're gonna sign you at. This number if, the
market thendeed, goes up will elevate you to.
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
The percentage of what the top five. Guys get is?
Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
That cool and then you have to be able to
say yes. Or no that guy may not be, number
one but then that guy might. Get hurt and if you,
get hurt and then you still get a guarantee that's
almost worth not getting paid the number. One money you
get the average of the top five.
Speaker 5 (01:07:17):
And mark the other Thing that i'm curious again you
can speak to this is someone who you know be
at a high level and double contract negotiations isn't just
bad business if you don't want to be known as
a team, that's like, oh man you, go there you.
Ball out they're not gonna, pay you or they will,
pay you but they're gonna make you wait. For, It
right like to me from a, Reputation, perspective mark isn't
that this? BAD business i think it's. Bad business and
(01:07:40):
but that's. The Case the cowboys. Are paying it's not.
Like that there's a, guy, that's Oh the cowboys didn't.
Pay Me dak prince got got he's the highest paid
guy in. The league and then you Got cdee lamb
who became the second highest paid wide receiver in.
Speaker 4 (01:07:58):
The league and They Paid trayvon diggs like.
Speaker 2 (01:08:04):
Something like ten million dollars more than any other corner
at that position was getting paid at the time, contract
wise with his escalators. And everything it, wasn't cash but
it was it was money, And incentives like why would
you give him all? That money and look what happened
once he signed. That deal he been hurt for. Two
(01:08:26):
years so that's two seasons of being cap hits that
you can't make, any moves any flexibility because you're tied to.
That money so, you know it makes my head HURT
because i know what the cap numbers ARE and i
know that there's no flexibility And the cowboys a handicap because.
(01:08:49):
Of it and if you stop waiting, so long then
you can get those guys under contract and you can
have more money to spend and for the. Next season
even when They Sign michael parsons next year will be
affected because they'll have.
Speaker 4 (01:09:06):
Less money there you.
Speaker 5 (01:09:08):
Have it that was the world's strongest take from the
world's strongest, Man Himself. Mark hennery we'll be back in.
A Moment, MORNING kickoff am Thirteen. Hundred zone, oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:09:23):
It's the. Morning kickoff.
Speaker 5 (01:09:26):
It is good. Morning kickoff that was the smooth melodic
Styles Of. Marcus spears you catching he's here daily mention you,
tip him help him out. REAL well am Thirteen, Hundred
Zone Austin. Sports radio we love. That song that's why
to let it ride a, Little, bit marcus gotta let
it ride a, little bit but it definitely gotta let.
It ride, oh Man throwback thursday HERE on am thirteen.
Speaker 4 (01:09:50):
Hundred zone when you, hear that you just, feel good just.
Speaker 5 (01:09:53):
Feel good only things that has me with a little
bit of froud on, My, face marcus is that the
fellas are here to enjoy it.
Speaker 4 (01:09:58):
With me, YOU know I, GOT i i got. You
here but no, no market, no hardball hard but, we'll
okay we, just vibing.
Speaker 5 (01:10:05):
Just vibe, of course the show coming to, a close
but still a little bit More of texas football talk
we want to get. Into here, of course you just
heard the world's, strongest Take and i'll quickly kind of
buffer that with, A, THOUGHT marcus i in hard, Excuse
me MARK and i talked about it in. THAT segment i,
always wonder, you know and YOU and i talking a
(01:10:27):
little bit and break. As well you're not really saving
anything when you decide to wait and, pay, people.
Speaker 7 (01:10:33):
Yes because you're not setting you're setting the market that
has already. Been set so the first guy sets. The
market and if you have one of those elite, type
guys you're setting the. Market again so you're gonna be
paying way more than you would have paid if you
would have been the first person in first team to initiate.
Speaker 5 (01:10:50):
The, market, MARCUS listen i Think the cowboys could take some,
cap expertise some cap Input From texas Football Because steve sarkezian,
General Manager Brandon, harrison company they've done an excellent job
with the way they've been able to curate this roster
and the ever changing climate of nil and the house
(01:11:11):
settlement and how they're going to recruit and so on and.
So forth they've really dide an. Excellent job one thing
that's been notable, To, me marcus is you haven't seen.
Any strife you haven't heard, any. Strife right, you know
we Talked About mike loxley earlier this week Over at
maryland and him talking about the fact that he lost
his locker room over.
Speaker 4 (01:11:28):
Nil payments you haven't had That.
Speaker 5 (01:11:30):
At texas and they've managed to recruit really well over
the past. Four years and what stood out to me
on the first day of. Fall camp one of the
things that stood out, to me because there were several
things that stood out, to me but watching some of,
the freshmen some of the, young, guys right some guys
who didn't get a ton of playing time. Last year i'll,
Name two Graci. And LYTTLETON and i, promise folks this
(01:11:51):
Isn't just. Florida bias he is A, Proka. Tampa florida
actually played for my old high school Coach Of mark
canner over There At Wiregrass Ranch. High school but what
stood out to me for a young guy his ability
on teams to push players really make. Them work day
one as, a gunner drew a couple of holes out
(01:12:11):
there in, punt coverage just ways to. Get, noticed see
and that's all you try. To do marcus's a, young,
guy right it's a. True freshman, you know if you're
if your position is loaded with, veteran talent you just
try to find a way to get.
Speaker 4 (01:12:22):
The coach you'll, be, like man we, see him he
looks like.
Speaker 7 (01:12:24):
He, belongs yeah you want To get you want to
show that you can do multiple things and you can
get on. The Field any way you can get on
the field is going to get, you attention and special
teams is the key to get get you on, the
field get, you attention and it can set you up
in the future so you can start your path as a.
Speaker 5 (01:12:42):
College player special teams is a way to feed. Your
family so players got to. Take note there got to be.
On point, of course special teams a point emphasis on the.
Forty Acres jeff banks does an excellent job with the,
special teams looking to get them back. Into form, of
course they had their issues kicking and punting, last year
but also the. Team's overall call it a, down year
but just a little bit below the standard because as,
(01:13:03):
they say the standard is. The standard trying to reach that.
Standard Again, adrian wilson, excuse me the Son Of Adrian
Wilson Santana Wilson Adrian santana wilson is his. Full name
he also stood out on special teams. As well but
to bring it back around to of course offense. And
defense we're gonna hear from. The players practice number two
set to take Place At frank. Dinias today it would
(01:13:23):
be another midday practice or another, AFTERNOON practice i, should,
say so gonna be, another scorcher another one hundred to
grad d one hundred. Degree day. Excuse me hopefully no
one loses. The lunch the guys got one way to get, in.
Shape right you can do all, the running all the
run on, the treadmill all. The Cardio that texas heat
will whip you, into shape. No doubt so we'll see
what is the guys have in terms of what's in
(01:13:45):
store for the second Day of texas's preseason not fall
Camp because i'm not calling this fall. Preseason camp also
hear from, the players it's. My expectation we'll hear From,
Arch Manning, anthony hill Probably little Michael taff action. As
Well michael taft stood out just being That. Leader marcus
he's a guy who he's Not taff you know what
(01:14:05):
you have at, This, Point right he's not a guy
who's going to be up and down in terms.
Speaker 4 (01:14:08):
Of practice so he's helping.
Speaker 5 (01:14:10):
Set the tone by getting some of these young, guys,
say hey this is how we want to.
Speaker 8 (01:14:13):
Do.
Speaker 7 (01:14:14):
Things yeah what's Interesting, about taff and we've said it
plenty of times on, this show is they had to
muzzle him on the field because they wanted other guys
to step up and. Communicate better that tells you about
him when you have to tell him to, communicate less
not for any, detrimental reason but to help other guys.
(01:14:34):
Step up so he is a prime. Example player this
is he's the player that they point to as this
is how you do.
Speaker 5 (01:14:40):
Things here that really stood out to ME when i
asked that Question Of steve Sarkejian And michael TAFF At sec. Media,
days right so they have To Muzzle taff and as,
you said you guys have talked about on, the show but,
that's CULTURE and i know we've talked about it, this
WEEK but i can't emphasize. It, Enough, RIGHT listen i
wasn't here for five. AND seven i wasn't here for
The time, HERMAN years i wasn't here. For eight But
(01:15:00):
everything i've seen in my three years On the beat
has been guys. Squarely focused i'm sure you've seen the
social media Image Of michael taff with. The shirt, obsessed
right obsessed with, the process obsessed with what it takes
to go be. A Winner, and marcus YOU and i
were talking about that two thousand and five team In
the break a couple, breaks Ago and i'm just gonna.
Speaker 4 (01:15:23):
Say it you know that five team had a LOT of.
Nfl players don't make me. Get, excited, Hey listen.
Speaker 5 (01:15:29):
I'm here TO provide i know a lot of, people think,
you Know the, beat reporters we're here to just beat.
People down we're to. Provide optimism when optimism, Is there i'm.
Getting INCITED and i will, say this just like that
five team had a TON of. Nfl talent you see.
It cooking you see the last two YEARS the nfl
talent dripping off of. The ROSTERS and i think this
year's team is going to be no different against a
(01:15:51):
TEAM that i think will play for a. National title
the road to competing for a national title starts now in.
Fall camp so, definitely excited definitely fired up to see
what we can glean from the second practice, today again,
no pats no. Click clack that'll come next week more,
than likely or at least when we're not available, to
see but it'll.
Speaker 4 (01:16:11):
Come eventually but just looking to see how the guys.
Speaker 5 (01:16:13):
Adapted again yesterday, looked great the size, of talent, the
speed you saw it all over, The place so we.
Speaker 4 (01:16:19):
Will have that for you.
Speaker 5 (01:16:20):
