You hold it down, you leave your message, because I'm
sure you've got plenty to say after this past weekend.
We'll receive it instantly. If it's good enough, you might
even hear it on Errol. As we talked about Texas
went up to Columbus and played in front of one
hundred and seven thousand, five hundred and twenty two thousand fans,

(02:29):
and let's just say things didn't end up the way
we thought it was going to the final stamp of
the ball games, saying books down, Lenie and that'll do it.
Wa war Cha Paul only one defending national champions and
all probability will send them a number one spot.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Ill they defeat the top.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Frank Gorbourn's this Hamterdoon and Yer State one and oh
chexas on in one. Texas comes up on a short
end of this one. I'll score this halfternoon from Ohio
Stadium here in Columbus. Ohio State buck has fourteen, Texas
long one two seven.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, it was not what everybody expected.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Did we expect a tight ball game going into it?
Absolutely both teams obviously Ohio State the defending national champion,
Texas making it to the final four two years in
a row and being upended by Ohio State by seven points.
And you sit there and you think about this ballgame,

(03:34):
and heading into the ballgame.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
We didn't know what to expect from either side.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Well, we knew that both defenses were going to be
solid because they had playmakers on both sides. We knew
that the quarterbacking was going to be a little bit.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Suspect on its approach.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Now, the hype, everybody, I kept saying, pump your breaks
on the HiPE.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
We've got to let this young man go out there.
And what I mean by young man, I mean arch Manning.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
We have to let him go out there and understand
this type of environment. Yes, he's played in games, but
it hasn't been his show in these games. He's the
one that everybody was looking at on the bench and saying,
we gotta get him in the game. We gotta get him.
He changes the dynamic of the game. But what you
spaill to realize is that the speed of the game

(04:25):
and the competition leads you into these particular moments. Now,
by no means, by no means, should you be walking
around just bashing all day.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
He didn't create this hype for himself. The media did.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
And I kept telling you, pump the brakes, let the
kid play. The person that you saw as a quarterback
on Saturday will not be the same person that you
see as a starting quarterback at the end.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Of the season. Texas.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
To be fair, they outperformed numbers wise Ohio State, and at.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
The end of the day, the.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Only number that matters is the one in the victory
column and the one in the l column.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Now I get it.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Everybody can say the sky is falling. I think that
is farthest from the truth. I think there were some
great things that happened during this ball game that we
got a chance to see. We got to see some
freshmen make their impacts early. We've got to see some
playmakers make some things happen as well the running game.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
So proud to see CJ.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Baxter and Trey Wisener in the backfield together.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
They did what they were supposed to do.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
You just gotta be able to find a way to
get that rhythm and again cut down on the pre
snap penalties and things can go a different direction. But
here's coach Sark's opening remarks after the fourteen to seven
loss at Ohio State.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Really hard fought game. A lot of a lot of
credit to Ohio State. They they played a really disciplined game.
You know that zero turnovers, only two penalties. They took
advantage of their opportunities when they got them, so so
credit to them. You know, as far as we go
as we as we said coming into this game, you know,
this game of serve is a really good measuring stick

(06:33):
of where we were at, where we needed to improve
and the things that we were good at, you know,
and I thought defensively, we played a very good football game.
It's unfortunate the first drive, they first touchdown drive they have,
we have two significant penalties. You know, we have the
face mass penalty and then we have the DPI. The
face mass penalty I believe was on third down and
that leads to the touchdown, and then you know, we

(06:54):
were we were offensively early on. I thought our plan
was pretty good, you know, when we were playing physical football.
Quite frankly, we just didn't quite have rhythm in the
passing game yet. But we had a couple opportunities there
to move it and that didn't happen. We finally kind
of woke up and started moving the ball, and you know,

(07:16):
we don't score from the from the one yard line.
We have another opportunity with a fourth and three I believe,
from the eight that we don't score on and then
inevitably they hit you know, they hit the long pass,
which you know, we had really minimized the explosive plays
and they hit the long pass. But the one thing
I was proud of coming out of this was our fight,
our ability to go down and score. I think with

(07:38):
three twenty eight to go, to get a stop on defense,
to get the ball back with an opportunity to go
to go tie the game, and we had a couple
of chances, and we just didn't quite make the plays
we wanted to make. So you know, this is this
is the first game of a season, of a long season,
and I sat at SEC media Days and said, I
think the days of a national champion being undefeated are

(08:00):
are over, especially when you're playing games like this and
you play in the conference we play in. So we've
got an opportunity here over the next month to really
clean some things up and to get ourselves in a
great frame of mind to get ready for SEC play.
I thought, for the most part, we handled this environment
really well for a first game with a lot of
new faces. I was proud of some guys who was

(08:22):
their first time in real action doing some good things
for us. But we'll get better. We've got a good
football team. That's a good football team you played today.
We'll get better and we'll be okay.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
And if you're going to judge this Texas football team
on this game, that's good because that team over there
at Ohio State is a defending national champion that is
going through some some of the same changes that Texas
is going through.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
That is a fair statement.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Now you see where the levels of where you need
to be Texas is in this ball game.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
As bad as everybody wants to make.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
It out to be, Texas had an opportunity to win
this ball game multiple times.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
You are the long runs was just basically a couple
of plays from being ahead of this game. It's just
one one key penalty that prolonged to drive the Ohios
they got their first score. And also just finishing one
of those earlier drives, you had the goal line stance
even if you didn't finish it and kick the field goal.

(09:27):
You with those two plays along, I mean those two
plays alone, you're actually up.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Yeah, it's a tighter ball game than what people. I mean,
seven points are still seven points and that's what it's
all about. But I want you to hear coach sark
On talking about the penalties that he had mentioned a
little bit earlier.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Yeah, I mean, you know again, I can't. I didn't
see the play where we got the face mask on.
Very rarely do you see face mask on a defensive
player rushing the passer, so I have to look at that,
you know. I think we had penalties for fifty yards.
They had two for fifteen. You know, the turnover margin,

(10:06):
you know, continues to hold true, and when it relates
to winning and losing football games, was one to nothing,
and they they took the one turnover we had and
they turned it into points, so that that was a
seven point swing right there. You know, the untimely penalties
sometimes are unfortunate, and I'm sure there's some calls that
they were saying should have been calls on us, and
some other ones just like I'm probably gonna turn in

(10:27):
place too that I think might have been penalties that
didn't get called. So that's part of football. I thought
our guys played hard on defense. You know, again, they
were trying to control the game with on the ground.
We were kind of trying to do the same thing.
I think both sides were trying to, you know, be
physical and keep the ball up inside. And for the
most part, I thought we played really good. I thought,
you know, Jack Bouemeister was was a tremendous weapon for

(10:50):
us today of pinning them deep and something to look
forward to down the road of the style of play
that we can play with. So I was proud of
the effort defensively. I thought we held Jeremiah in check
as best we could, who's a fantastic player.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
But we got to score more points.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
You know, at the end of the day, if we
can hold a team like that to fourteen, we got
to find a way to score fifteen.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Well, And that's the thing too.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
I'm looking at the uh, I'm looking at the text
line from the weekend and people are talking about we
lost to an inferior opponent, and it's like they're the
defending national champion. This is a barometer for you to
judge yourself to see what ends up happening moving forward.
And for Texas to go into this weekend against San
Jose State, they know that there's some things that need

(11:33):
to be worked out and cleaned up.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
So that is why this is a crucial time.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
And we will talk about all the other games that
were played because there was a lot there was a
lot of Top ten matchups that were not as close
as this one, so we will continue the conversations. It's
a long Horns Monday edition of the Morning Kickoff. This
sky is not falling, folks, and we'll continue the conversations
right here on the Morning can on Sports Radio AM

(12:02):
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff,
Longhorns Monday edition of the Morning Kickoff. Make sure you're
tuned in this morning starting at eleven o'clock as myself,
Craig Way, and Cam Parker will be at Steve Starkejian's
weekly press conference that will kick off right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
At eleven thirty.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
But we will get you started leading you up to
Coach Sarks interview at eleven thirty.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
We start at eleven o'clock. I want to.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Continue the conversations because I will I watched the game special.
Shout out to the great folks over at Cover three
that had us over there for the pregame show and
also for the watch party. Had a great time over there, win,
lose or draw, You're always going to have a good
time over at Cover three on Anderson Lane, Round Rock.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
So much more going on.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
But I wanted to talk about this because coach start
talked about the rhythm, the rhythm of this offense and
how they needed to find it because they just didn't
seem comfortable. I know a lot of people are going
back to that first play play action pass. DeAndre Moore
is wide open and somehow, some way Arch bounces the

(13:20):
ball into his hands, which obviously is an incompletion. But
you start to look at it and you say, Okay,
maybe it was the jitters, maybe it was just him
being at the beginning of the game just trying to
find his way, but coach Shark said, he needs to
get his offense in rhythm.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
Yeah, I just think that your rhythm in the passing
game was one of them today.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
And they've got an excellent secondary.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
You know, if there's a strength on their team, you know,
granted the receivers are really good, but they've got an
excellent secondary, and they've got a good scheme, and they've
got a very smart secondary, and so they they made
Arch work. I thought at halftime, Arch having a chance
to really sit and look at the tea and understand
some of the coverages they were playing, I think that
helped him into the second half and play. And so

(14:05):
there's you know, we definitely can lean into that. And
then ultimately, you know, we had opportunities to score points
and we didn't, and so we got to keep digging
into our ability to score when we have our opportunities
to do so. And we got to make a couple throws,
we got to make a couple of catches, we got
to make a couple better calls. But that's like I said,
you know, those are things that are fixable for us,

(14:26):
and I feel confident in that.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
And that's some of the things too. The play calling.
Everybody's talking about that because there are some times where
you start to understand when the team got in rhythm.
It was when they were doing the hurry up, when
they were rushing to the line of scrimmage and they
were doing up tempo and it was like, okay, now
you're moving the ball. You got the defense not being

(14:50):
able to settle. And I know that coach start talked about, well,
when we got close, we we didn't want them to
sub and they didn't want to bring in their big package,
and we're always gonna second guess that. But the story
has been about the red zone offense. Let's not twist
it up. Everybody's talking about it, and he said last
week that the numbers were actually better from year to

(15:13):
year in the red zone. But those are the moments
that you have to capitalize on it. I think sometimes
and again, coach Shark has forgotten more football than I'll
ever know. So let's not pick away at what he's doing.
And hindsight is always going to be twenty twenty. But
there are some times that I was wondering why we

(15:34):
didn't spread people out, give yourself an opportunity for your
quarterback who is big, strong and fast, being able to
use his legs as if he has to, and do
some other things. But one of the things Art finally
settled down and tried to find a little bit of
a rhythm. Sark was asked what was his biggest takeaway. Yeah,

(15:58):
I think you said you hit the nail on the head.
I do think he's he settled into playing, you know.
You know, I think part of it sometimes when he gets,
you know, hit a couple of times, it helps him.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
You know.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
He's one of those kind of guys, you know, And
so I think we learned a little bit that way
of maybe you know, incorporating a little more of his
run stuff. Earlier in the game where we waited a
little bit into the second half. I think when that happened,
I felt like he started really playing and we saw
we saw some some real flashes and glimpses of the
type of player that he's going to become.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Here.

Speaker 4 (16:29):
You know, he's gonna be sure he's gonna watch the
tape and say, man, I wish this, I wish that.
That's that's that's the life of a competitor.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
But I think there's there's.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
A lot to hold on to of of what the
future is going to look like for arch Manning here.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
So we're excited about that.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
And I know that Coach Sarka is going to go
back and look at the film and say the same thing.
He's gonna he's gonna question some of the things that
he called for him and why did certain things happen
that way. But sometimes as a play caller, you get
affected by a young quarterback because you don't want to
put too much on him. I thought that he was

(17:02):
going to be able to put the entire playbook on him,
and he still may. But what was it like for
you as a play caller being affected by young QB?

Speaker 4 (17:13):
Well, you know, it wasn't just him being young, you know,
it was young on the offensive line with some new faces.
It was a you know, a new receiver, new tight end,
some people playing in this environment, you try to do
the things that you think they do well, you know,
especially with a new defensive coordinator, which we didn't have
a bunch of information on of what they were going
to do from what his past and what they had

(17:34):
done from Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
And I thought we did that.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
You know, we were at that maybe a little anxious
early in the ballgame, but to their credit, I thought
we settled down, you know, and you know, I know,
I think Brandon Baker might have had a couple of
faalse starts for guy making his first career start, for
significant playing time in this environment, a little understandable. But
at the end of the day, I think we learned
a lot about ourselves that we can handle this environment.

(17:58):
You know, in some of the most critical moments, I
thought we were playing football there all the way into
the fourth quarter up until the end, and there's a
ball here, a ball there that might change the total
outcome of this game. So there's positives to that too
that I felt like we grew in the environment. I
don't feel like we were overwhelmed by the environment.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
I don't think they were overwhelmed by it either.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
I think in the very beginning, obviously there were some
nerves first starts, some things that were happening to a
lot of players, and the energy for everyone was through
the roof. Everybody was excited for this matchup. We had
been talking about it since it came out, and you know,
defending national champion versus the number one team in the country, who,
by the way, was the underdog going into the game.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
So that had a.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
Lot of conversation about it lead Corso's last game. But
as I said before, once you get on the field,
all the other stuff is out the window.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
You go down there and you play.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Texas out rushed the Ohio State foot ball team one
hundred and sixty seven to ninety. They also have more
passing yards when you look at one seventy to one
twenty six total offense three hundred and thirty six yards
of total offense to two oh three. Texas had more

(19:18):
plays sixty seven total offensive plays. But as coach will
tell you, you lose the turnover battle, you don't score in
the red zone, you fail on fourth down.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
There is a.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
Lot that you miss out on because of those facts.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
I caught some Sark said that in the post game.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
He said something about Arch he kind of gets his
rhythm once he gets hit.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
And I remember that third down scramble.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
He took a hard shot on the sideline, and it
does seem like he played better after that play.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
But if you know that, then you got to call
that earlyer in the game. Well, you don't want to
call a scramble that I guess hit not a scramble,
but just a play where he can get out on.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
The outside side. He did, yeah, and he short armed
the ball. He short armed it. I mean, there's no
other way around it. And then there were some throws
that he had made, but.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
It was some time and issues early in the game,
a lot of time and issues.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
And I still look at it and I say, okay,
if that if these are some things that you've obviously
had to process throughout this journey, you should know, Okay,
I gotta get him in the right spot. But one
of the questions I was asked in the post game,
you have a young offense. Who are your leaders in
that offense that can settle people? Down, get them locked

(20:36):
back in, and then make this thing happen.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Yeah, I felt like the demeanor of the offense was good.
You know.

Speaker 4 (20:42):
I thought Archis poison composure was was really good in
this game. I didn't feel like he got rattled. Like
I said, I think I learned about him a little
bit playing that I've got to I've got to let
him go play and so that that'll help us. But
he's going to be a really good leader, you know.
I feel like Drink and Trey are both really good leaders.
They played a lot of football for us up front.

(21:04):
Jack will evolve into that this was his first game less,
but he's he's a veteran player, and DeAndre and Ryan too.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
So we got plenty of guys.

Speaker 4 (21:10):
And I thought Trevor Gooseby was really good today from
a leadership standpoint, you know, he and Cole Hudson and
DJ so we got plenty of people there. That's that's
the least of my worries is from a leader that
we don't have the leadership. We definitely have that, but
we've got some other things we've got to improve upon.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
I kind of figured that in the first game they
will rely on the running game more in early down situations,
and I kind of feel like they abandoned that. Yeah,
there were some times that you would think that they
would have kept running the ball. But the one of
the things that he talked about improving on you've got
to be better of six than six of nineteen on

(21:46):
third and fourth down conversions. You have to be a
lot better in those particular moments if your team is
going to evolve in.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
That offensive type of mindset.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
But again, and the defense played there behind all kudos
to them on both sides, on both sides. Coming up
next in the Hards Knox Life, I'm gonna talk about
arch Manning and why there's no need.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
To hit the panic button.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
Relax people right here on the morning kickoff on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. I want to get
into this conversation because I know that a lot of
people have their thoughts on this Arch Manning situation. But
do not panic, folks. If anything can be done, it

(22:36):
can be Coach Sark working with arch Manning. If you
go back and look at some of the numbers, Yes,
lateral passes, he was really good, getting balls to the backs,
really good. It was just some of those intermediate routes
that he was having a tough time with whether he
was throwing a fastball, whether he was throwing a side arm.

(22:57):
I don't know where that Bernie Kozars stuff is coming from.
That needs to be addressed. And I've talked about this
last year. I've talked about it every single time. I
know that a lot of people believe in their arm strength.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
I believed in mind all the time, and there were
some times where I was throwing fastballs and I couldn't
take anything off, and my wide receivers would be like yo,
bro taking a little bit off of that. But one
thing you got to make sure you continue to work
on is the footwork, and I believe that was some
of the things that people questioned last year, in the

(23:36):
last couple of years with Quinn yours, But they're also
going to question it with Arch now fundamentally sound. I mean,
we talked about the Manning family and what everything is.
But there were some throws that you question his release
point in why he was releasing the football like that.
There were some mistime throws and the timing just didn't

(23:57):
seem to be right. But then you see some of
those beautiful throws like the past to Injuries down the sideline.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
That was a beautiful past.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Then you see the throw to Parker Livingstone for the touchdown.
There are some things that he did that you said, oh,
I can see the talent. And yes, there were some
times that he did not look like everybody the hype
man that everybody was making him out to be. But
as we've told you, pump your brakes on the hype

(24:27):
and let the man play, let him develop. And I
said it before and I'll say it again. What you
saw on Saturday, you will not see at the end
of the season. You will see a better version of
Arch Manning. But coach Shark was asked about to have
time talk with Arch and what changed everything?

Speaker 2 (24:45):
I thought he was really good.

Speaker 4 (24:46):
You know, he and I sat together and we went
through some things. We kind of shifted his focus on
how to recognize the coverages because I felt like we
had some tells a different way where he was struggling
to kind of see some things early. And I thought
he took that information and applied it in the second half.
And Uh, that's encouraging that he was able to adjust

(25:06):
at halftime.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
Uh, to do those things.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
And so all in all, like the growth throughout the
game for Arch was was really encouraging for me.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
We're we're gonna be fine.

Speaker 4 (25:17):
Like I said, we got work to do as a
team and as an offense, but ultimately, like I'm I'm
getting on the plane knowing we're going to be a
good football team. And so, hey, we didn't win tonight.
That's the life of a competitor. We went for it
in in a tough place against a good team. But
we'll get we'll get back on the horse and we'll
play good football this season.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
And his story is not written.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
And the question was also asked to him, why was
his approach different for Arch, Like, what what made you
take that plan into this ball game?

Speaker 2 (25:48):
For Arch?

Speaker 4 (25:49):
There you I just felt like, hey, I was going
to try to do some things that I felt like
he was really comfortable with in practice, with the unknowing
of how they're playoffs, you know, and what they were
gonna do. And so I don't I don't feel bad
necessarily about the plan. Like I said, I think I
probably would have incorporated him running the ball more earlier

(26:11):
in the game, and maybe that would have settled him
down more. But I think the things we had up
we felt good about. I think there's probably some throws
in the first half if he could have back all right,
if we call those same things in the second half,
you know, he probably makes a couple of those throws
and that may change some things there too. But that
was that was expectable, you know. But like I said,

(26:32):
you know, you you go in, you try to put
your players in position to have some success. We didn't
have as much as we would have liked, especially in
the first half, but but I think we were learning
a little better formula for him, which in turn is
better for our offense and ultimately better for the team.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
And then he was also asked about this.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
He said, did Arch meet your expectations for this ball game?

Speaker 2 (26:57):
And how was everything done? I mean, sure, I always
want him to play better.

Speaker 4 (27:02):
That that's a that's a job of a coach, right
and our job is to try to find ways for
all of our guys to play better. And so for Arch,
the expectations were we were out of control on the outside.
But I'd say, let's finish the book before we before
we judge it. Right, this is this is one chapter
and we got a long season to go play.

Speaker 1 (27:21):
And I've been saying it and I'll continue to say it. Relax, folks.
Is the first time this young man got a chance
to play in front of a raucous cloud crowd as
the starter. If you go back and you look through history,
and there has been documentation of this about former Texas
Longhorned quarterbacks in their first game and what the expectations were.

(27:45):
You can go back to Colt McCoy when they played
against the top ranked Ohio State squad in his first
start as the starter, first full time game as the starter,
uh cult was fifty nine percent completion rate, one hundred
and fifty four yards passing, one touchdown and one interception.

(28:08):
And that game was played at the friendly confines of DKR.
But Ohio State was a different ball team then. So
you look at what Arch was able to do fifty
seven percent, one hundred and seventy yards passing, one touchdown,
one interception. I think Texas is going to be okay.

(28:31):
And for those that want to already throw salt on
the game, I feel you take advantage of it. This
is your time to be able to do so, but
understand that this young man is going to get better.

Speaker 2 (28:44):
There's no choice. The height.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
That wasn't his doing. That was media. That was last name,
the hype train. Everybody wanted to be on the hype
train for Arch and he told you, I haven't done
it anything, but guess what, nobody.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
Wanted to listen. Nobody wanted to listen to it.

Speaker 1 (29:07):
Because it was like, you got to do this. No,
let the young man play. You know, as well as
I do more reps, you get, more time on the field,
you get you're going to get better. And Coach Sark
tried to tell you in the very beginning, stop the madness, folks,

(29:31):
let him play, because even Vince Young didn't start off
with the hottest games when he went out there.

Speaker 5 (29:39):
Let's look at Vince Young's first game with a lot
of playing time against Oklahoma eleven for twenty one fifty passing,
one hundred and thirty five passing yard.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
Well, let's go back to his second two and two
interceptions no touchdown. Yeah, I mean so, pumpy brakes Man.
The expectations sometimes does not match because the force of
it all was a little too much. You know who
had the best percentage case McCoy twelve for fifteen eighty percent,

(30:13):
one hundred and sixty eight yards against UCLA in just
his second start.

Speaker 2 (30:19):
So yeah, good things happen to those who wait.

Speaker 1 (30:23):
So just wait for this season to go on, and
let's see how the story is finally written. We're gonna
close out our number one with a great, great story
and oh yeah, it's about the Texans and I'm not
talking about Houston right here on the Morning Kickoff on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to

(30:46):
the Morning Kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Don't forget to be tuned in today
at eleven o'clock is myself, Craig Way, and Cam Parker
will be leading you up to Coach Stark media availability
which will take place at eleven thirty. And you can
listen to all of that right here on Sports Radio

(31:08):
AM thirteen hundred Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app.
And also make sure you tuned into The Craigway Show
this afternoon with Craig and Cam Parker as they break
down the game, Craig's trip to Columbus, which always has
some sort of extracurricular stuff as far as travel is concerned,

(31:33):
and you'll get all that from Craigway. From two to
five this afternoon, college football kicked off. It was week one,
full week of action, but none of the upsets that
took place this weekend were bigger was bigger than the
one that happened at West Point on Friday night.

Speaker 2 (31:58):
Do anything nice to kick it? Washton Twin He's got
Texans taken.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
In the all time, the Tarleton Texans. That's right, folks, Tarleton,
little baby school up in Stevenville, has made its way
up to West Point and upset And that is a

(32:29):
true upset of the West Point football team, the Army
Black Knights thirty to twenty seven in double overtime for
a huge, huge upset, one of the biggest upsets of
the weekend. And I'll tell you what, my house was
rocking when that kick finally went through in the thought

(32:52):
process of Tarleton going up to West Point and beating Army.
And they are the first and only team that is
two to zero in college football right now. They're doing
some things up in Stevenville. They've got a brand new
basketball arena, a huge football stadium, and now they are

(33:12):
definitely trying to dive in to college football and be
a part of the movement that is out there. I mean,
this is an opportunity that win also put you on
the map for other people to pay attention to, because
that was not an easy place to go. If you'd
have told me that they were going to go to
New York and beat West Point, I would have called

(33:35):
you crazy, because not a lot of people can defend
the option. We already know what Army has been. There
have been a team that has made news and made
ways and even tried to get into the college football
Playoff just a year ago with their form of play,
and for that to happen, it was outstanding for the

(33:55):
Tarleton Texans.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
So shout out to the Texans.

Speaker 1 (33:59):
Also, you cantinue to look around college football and some
of the big games that happened throughout that time. It
is a big move as we start to look into
all of these games and the expectations coming up. This
week cannot Week Texas Can't Wait. Texas will be taking
on San Jose State eleven am. We will do the

(34:20):
pregame show from the stadium at Hook Them Hangout starting
at eight am once again, but this time we will
be on location. Make sure you come out and say
hello and go out there and support this team, it's
the first time you'll get a chance to see him
at home. I know a lot of people made the
trip to Columbus, and from all accounts, they had a

(34:42):
great time, and the people in Columbus were actually nice
to them, which I find utterly amazing at this point.
But for them to be able to do that, I
was impressed with us. So we'll see what ends up
happening moving forward. But as you start to look at
this week and recap some of these games, because I'm

(35:02):
gonna recap some of these games today in the next segment,
so you can hear all the upsets, because there.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
Was a lot.

Speaker 1 (35:11):
Notre Dame ended up getting beat by Miami last night.
But the one thing about this game for Notre Dame
and Marcus Freeman is going to catch a lot of
smack about this is he didn't run his running back,
who everybody believes is going to be the top running
back in college football. You talk about Heisman Trophy favorites,

(35:35):
he was someone that was going to be in the conversation,
and that's Jeremiah Love. He only got the ball ten times,
ten times for thirty three yards, and he's supposed to
be your bell cow your quarterback ran the ball on
board times then your running back, so that is a
huge question mark. And Carson Beck kind of quiet some

(35:58):
of the haters by going twenty thirty for two hundred
and five yards and a touchdown. But the player to
think about for Miami that is a young player, Malachi Tony.
Malachi Tony is somebody that you need to be paying
attention to. He wore number ten last night and he

(36:20):
was making all the noise. But Miami ranked number ten
defeated the number six ranked Notre Dame fighting Irish. Michael
Irvin was on the sideline, Jimmy Johnson was there. They
also had Ray Lewis. They brought back all the Prime
U players to come and watch that game, and they

(36:41):
were just as fired up. And they see what Mario Cristobal,
a former Miami Hurricane himself, was able to put together.
And so the expectation this year has gone through the
roof and this week they will have the rankings today.
I think they're gonna end up having to wait till
Tuesday because there is still one game tonight that we'll

(37:03):
talk about is TCU at Chapel Hill, North Carolina versus
the Horn Frogs, and it is Bill Belichick's first collegiate
football game as a head coach, and everybody's anticipating this
ballgame obviously because it is one Bill Belichick, but you

(37:23):
also got to look at what TCU's going to be
able to do. TCU is favored in this ballgame, and
for Bill Belichick to get his first test in this
ballgame is something that a lot of folks are trying
to figure out.

Speaker 2 (37:38):
Bill Belichick never.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Been in the college game, trying to figure out how
he's going to bring the NFL to college football. But
if he can look at what Matt Patricia was able
to do with his first year or first game as
a defensive coordinator in college football, he did a really
good job against the Texas Longhorns and kept them under wraps.

(38:01):
So we shall see what this game is going to
look like. But we'll close out the show talking about
that and the expectations coming into this season. But coming
up in the next segment, we are definitely gonna talk
and take.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
A look around the SEC.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
Some of the big teams did big things, but one
team that a lot of folks had high expectations. I
saw a lot of people picking them to play for
the national Championship. Along with the Texas Longhorns is the
Alabama of Crimson Todd and one man from Florida State said,
they don't have Nick Saban on that sideline. They thought

(38:39):
it was fighting words, but he he meant what he said,
and he said what he meant.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Our number one is in the books.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
Our number two is just around the corner right here
on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred
design WWE Hall of Famer and World Strongest Man Dve
Mark Henry will be back tomorrow, but we roll on
today on a Longhorns Monday edition of the Morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred to Zone

(39:09):
and nour number one. We recapped Texas lost to Ohio
State as the number one team in the land falls
to the number three team in the land in Columbus
fourteen to seven. The defense played at an elite, elite level,
and we will continue to watch them develop as they
start to ascend the way that they have always thought

(39:33):
to be. When you think about the experience, I thought
Cole Brovard played an excellent football game on that defensive line.
There was a video of him taking on four blockers
on a short yardage play. Outstanding work and I think
he's going to be somebody that we continue to watch
become one of the best players on the defense. I

(39:53):
thought Colin Simmons, although he got that penalty, I thought
he was effective and raised some havoc as well.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
Malik Muhammad played great.

Speaker 1 (40:04):
Leangeo Lafoul had a career high in tackles with nine tackles,
so that was very impressive when you sit back and
watch what he was able to do. But like I said,
Grayson Lyttleton too, the young freshman did an excellent job
with his opportunities to make plays. Also want to give
a superlative out for Trey Weisner and Cedric Baxter, two

(40:27):
guys that Trey Wisner obviously took over for Baxter when
Baxter got hurt, but being able to watch him come
back Cedric Baxter CJ. Baxter come back and play at
the level that he played was something that was very impressive. Also,
shout out to our punter boom Meister or Boom Easter.

Speaker 2 (40:49):
Who is.

Speaker 1 (40:51):
To me he's going to be an integral part of
the success of this football team in being able to
flip the field. He pinned the opponents inside their twenty
three times on his punts, and that is something that
Texas is going to use this year to be able
to flip the field and change the momentum of the ballgame.

(41:14):
At the end of the show, we will talk about
Lee Corso and his emotions and what that was all about.
Will also continue the conversations about the NFL. It starts
this week on Thursday night as the Dallas Cowboys will
be taking on the Philadelphia Eagles. We'll talk about that
in the next segment, but then we'll also close out

(41:35):
the show with Bill Belichick in his first game. But
right now, I want to talk about the SEC, the SEC.

Speaker 2 (41:43):
SEC.

Speaker 1 (41:44):
Everybody wants to screen the SEC. Well, the SEC started
its season on Thursday, I mean, excuse me on Friday
night as Auburn went to Waco and beat Baylor thirty
eight to twenty four behind Jackson Arnold. Jackson Arnold who
used to be at Oklahoma and for some reason he

(42:05):
decided to leave and get his opportunity to go to Auburn.
All they did was throw for one hundred and eight yards,
ran for one hundred and thirty seven on sixteen carries,
with two touchdowns. Baylor was led by Sorry Robertson who
had four hundred and nineteen yards passing in three touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
But the reason Baylor is going to put up points.

Speaker 1 (42:28):
The problem that I have with Baylor right now is
they're not being able to stop the run. They were
not very good and David Randa, being the head coach
who is one of the best defensive coordinators in the
country for a while before he took the head coaching job,
his defensive had now looked like they can't stop anything.

(42:49):
So they have to get back to the drawing board.
But kudos to Auburn for them to be able to
go out and win. Syracuse and Tennessee was a twenty
four number. Twenty four ranked Tennessee, that matchup was a
big matchup.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
I love what Syracuse's.

Speaker 1 (43:06):
Head coach Fran Brown, what he brings to the table,
but watching this Tennessee team and their new quarterback Joey
Angelier was able to transfer from UCLA, took over for
Nico and was able to come out and sling the
ball all over the place. But for Syracuse, I want
to give a shout out to former Texas longhorn John T.

Speaker 2 (43:30):
Cook.

Speaker 1 (43:30):
The second he had six receptions for fifty eight yards
and a touchdown. So shout out to Joda, I mean
jo Day Johntay. I hope that he can get everything
figured out in lock In, because that young man has
always had talent. Mississippi State defeated Southern miss Blake Shaping
two hundred and seventy yards passing, one touchdown, one interception.

(43:54):
Former Texas Longhorn Brendan Thompson saturn receptions for ninety two yards.
So he now has found a home and hopefully he
gets things done because he did get married as well.
Kentucky defeated the Toledo twenty four to sixteen. Zach Calzada,
you remember him, former Texas A and M quarterback who's

(44:16):
in his seventh year of college football, who is now
the quarterback for Kentucky. They go out and they get
the victory. The running game was the key for them.
Dante dow Dwell fourteen carries for one hundred and twenty
nine yards and one touchdown. The Georgia Bulldogs, who seemed

(44:37):
to be on a mission Day two new quarterback Gunner Stockton,
who ended up having to play against Texas in the
SEC Championship game. He had one hundred and ninety yards
passing two touchdowns, and he also had two touchdowns on
the ground. They brought in transferred Zachariah Branch who had
three receptions ninety five yards and a touchdown. He was

(45:00):
at USC one hell of a returner as well, so
he is definitely a playmaker.

Speaker 2 (45:06):
Upset alert, upset alert. Florida State.

Speaker 1 (45:09):
The Seminoles defeat you guessed it, Alabama. They defeated Alabama
in Tallahassee.

Speaker 2 (45:18):
Let's just say this.

Speaker 1 (45:21):
The transfer quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who came from BC, came
to Florida State during the summer. He said, they don't
have Nick Saban on that sideline, and we got something
for him. A lot of people gave him flack. Well,
he went out and backed it up. One hundred and
fifty two yards passing sixteen of seventy eight on the

(45:42):
ground for one touchdown.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
But he backed it up, said it with his chest.

Speaker 1 (45:47):
Yeah, he went out there and handled his business. People
are already calling for Kaitlin Debor to be run out
of Tuscaloosa. People take it easy, take it easy, but
we shall see what ends up happening. Also, Arkansas fifty
two to seven over Alabama A and M. Taylor Green,

(46:08):
the quarterback for Arkansas, threw for three hundred and twenty
two yards and six touchdowns. Oklahoma number eighteen thranc Oklahoma
Sooners thirty five to three over Illinois State. They found
their quarterback John Matteer three hundred and ninety two yards,
three touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (46:28):
He was slinging it all over the place. And remember
this name.

Speaker 1 (46:31):
Keyantes Lewis wide receiver, nine receptions, one hundred and nineteen
yards and two tds. Diego, Pavia and Vanderbilt played Charleston.
They beat them forty five to three. Diego two hundred
and seventy five yards passing three touchdowns. Their top prospect

(46:52):
at tight end. He's going to be an NFL guy.
Also a former Texas A and M quarterback Eli Stellers
from on Kaleen k Town Baby four receptions eighty six yards,
but Sir Derek Alexandra right here from LBJ twelve carries
eighty three yards. Florida goes on to win fifty five

(47:13):
to zero against Long Island. Nothing to talk about there,
but of course Texas will be playing Florida in the
swamp a little bit later. Texas A and m wins
forty two to twenty four over Utsa. Marcel reed two
hundred and eighty two hundred and eighty nine yards passing
four touchdowns and he also ran for thirty nine yards

(47:37):
as well, and Clemson.

Speaker 2 (47:40):
Falls to LSU. Is this the year of the Tiger?

Speaker 1 (47:44):
In Baton Rouge seventeen to ten, big time game from
Grant Nussmyer two hundred and thirty two yards one td
k Klubnick didn't have his best game two for three
for two thirty with an interception, but the running game
was key for LSU. Being able to run out the
clock and make plays and control the clock was good

(48:07):
for them. Cayden Durham ran for seventy four yards and
one touchdown. Old Miss beat Georgia State sixty three to seven.
Austin Simmons took over the reins as the starting quarterback
for Old Miss through for three hundred and forty one yards,
three touchdowns, two interceptions.

Speaker 2 (48:26):
But that's not the story.

Speaker 1 (48:28):
The story happened before the game Georgia State as a
young man, I believe he used to play for Old
Miss well. He ended up during the pregame grabbing one
of the Georgia's play. I mean the old miss players necklaces,
yanked it off of them like give me yo chain,

(48:48):
like debo, and then he threw it into the stands,
chunked it all the way into the stands, and ended
up not being able to play in the ballgame because
the coaches did not obviously did not like what they
saw when that happened. So he stood on the sideline
thinking he was about to get in the game, but no,

(49:09):
he threw the chain in the stands, and now they're
talking about pressing charges for him doing that. Marcus, you've
been around a long time. You know what snatching chains
is all about, because we heard it. It normally happens
in a rap beef. But uh, I'm sitting here trying
to figure out why in the world would you want
to do.

Speaker 2 (49:29):
Something like that, And I'm a lost for words.

Speaker 5 (49:34):
It's basically trying I don't it doesn't even make sense,
like I would say, trying to cause a scene.

Speaker 2 (49:40):
But dude, it's just brained dumb.

Speaker 1 (49:43):
My question to this, and this is where things start
to I always question people in these particular moments. You
know that there are cameras everywhere, There are cameras where
you don't think there are cam and somehow, some way
you put yourself in a position to not only be

(50:06):
caught on camera. You're in the middle of a football
field with a lot of people.

Speaker 2 (50:10):
You got to the point where.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
Your teammates were looking at you like you was crazy.

Speaker 2 (50:14):
Obviously he wasn't caring about being seen.

Speaker 1 (50:17):
Well, he may not be on the team this week,
so he will be seen in the transfer portal if
that is the case. Coming up next, we're gonna talk
Dallas Cowboys game week.

Speaker 2 (50:28):
Baby.

Speaker 1 (50:30):
Yeah, I'm not really that excited about it, but I
will tell you where I will be this week. But
of course we got to hear from Dak Prescott and
his thoughts on the trade that has been made and
the Cowboys did something positive for the first time in
their life. Right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the

(50:53):
Morning Kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone.

Speaker 2 (50:57):
It is a Long Horns.

Speaker 1 (50:58):
Monday edition of the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and
thirteen hundred The Zone. We have been recapping the Texas
Longhorns matchup against Ohio State. We also talked about the
SEC and all things that have happened around the SEC,
big games all over the place. But football, NFL football

(51:21):
starts this week.

Speaker 2 (51:23):
That's right. The Dallas Cowboys will be on the road.

Speaker 1 (51:27):
Against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles this Thursday night, seven o'clock.
And you cannot believe how excited I am about this
football game. I know last week I was over there
crime talking little trash and all this stuff. I'm not leaving.
I can't quit them. I told you that it's not happening.

(51:49):
But there are some changes that have happened with the
Dallas Cowboys, and one of the conversations that continues to
happen is the one around Micah part. Since Michael Parsons
being traded last week, they get Kenny Clark, defensive tackle
to help stop the run, all pro type of player.

(52:10):
They get two first round picks to add to their
other two picks.

Speaker 2 (52:14):
So that's why people.

Speaker 1 (52:15):
Keep saying they got four first rounders over the next
couple years. But I continue to understand and think about
this team as a whole. Todd Archer talked to Dak
Prescott about this football team and the change that has
happened and Dak said, and I quote he said, I
don't know if this makes us better or not. Obviously,

(52:38):
just the way the negotiations went, and obviously to some
content and to some extent. I mean, y'all are out
here asking me all the questions, and it seemed like
it was personal on their end. Four days after the deal,
they were saying, I'm not gonna say we're gonna be better.
We got a lot to go out there improve. We

(52:58):
can prove it even if he's on the team. So
I'm not going to say by any means, but I
know that adding a guy like Kenny Clark and adding
true leader, that was the word that I was That's
the statement that I was really stuck on. Adding a
true leader, a real man that is going to elevate

(53:19):
the team, who's been a pro bowler, is exciting to
be on this team. When he said that, when he
said that part, that is where people are going to
try to pick that apart talking about adding a real
man and a real leader. So obviously Jerry wanted might
go to be more of a leader, Dak wanted might

(53:40):
go to be more of a leader. This is something
that I guess other people have been saying that he
doesn't show the leadership skills, but in some instance, some
people lead by example. And his example was I'm going
out here to get twenty two sacks. Ye, exactly, going
out here to get to the sex and season. That's

(54:01):
exactly what I was about to ask. What do you
mean by leader? Are you talking vocal? Are you talking
on the field? Are you talking practice habits? It is
so opening. And I know a lot of people didn't
like Micah's podcast either, because during his podcast, he would
always take shots at players on the team. And that
could be that could be where it's coming from.

Speaker 5 (54:23):
Right there is the podcast, because when you takeing shots
with your teammates and you know, and the fact that
Dak says this and that's the leader of your team, man,
that's telling. That's telling that other players were talking about.

Speaker 1 (54:38):
That absolutely, and I think that is why some people
looked at it and said, I can't believe they got
rid of him. I was one of those. I can't
believe they made this move. I was one of them.
But as you know, you start to sleep on some
things and peel it back a little bit, you start
to understand that there was more to it than just

(55:00):
Micah's play on the field. One of the things that
the Cowboys was able to do yesterday was agreed to
a four year extension to Deran Bland four years, ninety
two million dollars fifty million guaranteed.

Speaker 2 (55:16):
Now Jerry wants to start extending people. Yeah, he started
doing some things.

Speaker 1 (55:21):
He did it this offseason too, because he signed Marquise Bell,
who I've been a big fan of, three years, nine
million dollars, six million guaranteed. He signed Cavante Turpin three years,
thirteen point five million dollars, five million guaranteed. He extended
Jake Ferguson four years fifty million dollars and twenty eight

(55:42):
million guaranteed. Then he got a dosee. No, it's not
a duse this osa I'm going with ELSA four years,
eighty million dollars fifty two million guaranteed. And then they
just signed Dran Bland four million, I mean four years,
ninety two million dollars, fifty of it guaranteed. And these

(56:04):
are the numbers that are opening up some opportunities to
kind of lock in these players. This is what I've
been trying to say he needed to do.

Speaker 2 (56:15):
A while back.

Speaker 1 (56:16):
Maybe maybe you're starting to see him start to understand
that if we're going to be successful, we can't tie
the money up with just a few guys. We have
to be able to make some moves and make the
money work effectively. And so now you start to see,
all right, let me lock up my defensive backs, let

(56:38):
me lock up my defensive lineman, and let me get
my punt returner, kickoff returner in place. Because I've already
got Dack lined up. I've already got CD lined up.
Now you got George Pickens, who's gonna get his money
because I don't think you go out and make the
trade for him to have him as a rental player.

Speaker 2 (56:58):
I don't think that's happening. So they have to make
that move.

Speaker 1 (57:02):
But yesterday the Cowboys also named who were going to
be their captains and who wears the big Sea on
their chest, and Dak Prescott talked about what it means
to have that captain on your chest.

Speaker 4 (57:15):
Here the teammates be out one of the captains is
what does that mean?

Speaker 6 (57:19):
Yes, some I don't take for granted, means a lot.

Speaker 2 (57:21):
One.

Speaker 6 (57:21):
Just to get back to the year long captains, I'm
getting to put the Sea on my chest some that
always before I got to the league, or you know,
when I was a kid watching this game. Heused to
love watching the quarterbacks and the players that had to
see on their jerseys.

Speaker 2 (57:32):
Understand what it means.

Speaker 6 (57:33):
But yeah, to be selected as that, and really to
be one of the six selected, I think just that
number growing. And you know, I don't know if shot
they alluded to it, but he initially said like three
or four, and right then the number doubled pretty much.
And I just think that's I took credit to each
and every guy on that group and being picked by
their peers and just means they're handling business, doing things

(57:54):
the right way, and as I said, something I don't
take for granted and move forward each and every day
with a lot of responsibility because of it.

Speaker 1 (58:02):
And not only that, Not only is Dak Prescott one
of the captain, CD Lamb was named captain, Brandon Aubrey
named captain, CJ. Goodwin named captain, Donovan Wilson named captain,
and Osa named captain as well. So all these guys
have been named captain. And one of the things that

(58:24):
Dak was talking about was being named the captain all year.
I didn't think about this, but apparently they weren't the
captain's the entire season. I guess Mike McCarthy was rewarding
people like we were in high school.

Speaker 2 (58:40):
If you played well last week, you get.

Speaker 1 (58:42):
To go out and be a captain, instead of making
the captain the leadership group the same the entire year.
I don't know that for certain, but I've been looking
and trying to read some of the stories and I'm like, well,
why would that even be one of those one of
those things that you call us a I could see
that with maybe one or two captains.

Speaker 2 (59:03):
How many captains do you get? Six? I mean he
gave he has six captains.

Speaker 5 (59:07):
Yeah, maybe one of maybe a couple of captains for
practice that week or whatever.

Speaker 1 (59:13):
But I can't see it as well the whole practice.
I mean a captain for the whole year. For basically,
what they've got is two captains for offense, two captains
for defense, and two captains for special teams.

Speaker 2 (59:26):
So that's what that break down to.

Speaker 5 (59:28):
And I can see rotating one on defense and one
on offense. No, I'm just saying that's the only way
I can see it, instead of like, I can't see
it for all six guys, that definitely doesn't make sense.

Speaker 1 (59:44):
I mean, what do you mean to do it? I said,
they got two for each. No, what I'm saying is
if last year MacArthur was rotating, I could I could
see it for like one captain on one east side
of the ball, but not for all six captains got
you because there was I'm like, there's no way, there

(01:00:07):
was no way that you don't have number one, your
quarterback as one of your captains. There's no way that
you don't have one of your safeties or linebackers as
one of your captains. And of course you have to
have a special teams captain.

Speaker 7 (01:00:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:00:20):
The only way I don't see a quarterback as a
captain if it's a rookie quarterback.

Speaker 2 (01:00:24):
But that's yeah, that's the only way. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:00:27):
So we'll see how the Cowboys get ready to play
this matchup. The story is going to continue to be
about what happened with Micah Parsons, what's next for the
Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Life after Micah.

Speaker 1 (01:00:40):
But now this is where the leadership has to stand
up and be a lot better, because one thing's for sure,
the story.

Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
Of this season has already begun. They traded him.

Speaker 1 (01:00:53):
Now Let's see what they do to him or do
without him being there, and how quickly can Dak turn
this team around? We shall see as always coming up next.
It would normally be the world's strongest take, but I
got something else for you. It's a goodbye to one
of the best to ever do it on game day

(01:01:14):
right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff
right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
It is a Long Horns Monday edition of The Morning Kickoff.
And the Longhorns went to Columbus Columbus, Ohio to take

(01:01:35):
on the number three ranked Ohio State buck Eyes, And
there was so much that was really really going on
during the game.

Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
Pregame all over the place.

Speaker 1 (01:01:47):
There was a lot of people in town having a
grand old time. But what we realized was this was
going to be the last time that we got a
chance to hear from one Lee Corso. Lee Corso has
been a staple of our Saturday mornings talking college football,
and he did a great job throughout his career of

(01:02:11):
bringing the fun back into the situation of making these picks.
Coach Start talked at the pregame and talked about what
he meant to him and how his saturdays and when
he came into college football, he was wrapped around what
Lee Corso was able to do. And Lee Corso as

(01:02:34):
always not so fast, my friend, and being able to
go out and make his picks. It has been interesting
to watch what he was able to do. So on
his last day, while we were full of emotion and
everyone was reaching for their kleenex, he was like his

(01:02:54):
own self and he was not so fast, my friend,
and he went out with a bang.

Speaker 2 (01:02:59):
And what do what I mean by that?

Speaker 1 (01:03:01):
All Lee Corso did was pick Tennessee South Carolina, his
alma matera Florida State, Miami LSU, and the Ohio State.
His final headgear was the Ohio State defeating the Texas Longhorns,
and with that he went out as a six and

(01:03:24):
zero weekend, a perfect record for the last time for
him to do his picks.

Speaker 5 (01:03:30):
I thought he went full a circle too, because that
was his first ever ahead.

Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
Gilt absolutely absolutely well.

Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
The thing about it is you start to understand who
Lee Corso is to college football. You heard the outpouring
cries for him. You saw that they not only had
it streaming on ESPN, they went live on Fox to
show respect for him and his last pick. They brought

(01:03:59):
him to the center of the field so everyone could
see you. The band for Ohio State put Corso on
the field and it was just one of those majestic
moments that he deserved, and I'm glad that everybody was
there to see it, and I was glad that everyone

(01:04:20):
was able to show the love for him and appreciate him. Now,
we all know that Lee Corso hadn't been doing good
for quite some time, and you saw the emotional outpour
on the video that they played during the pregame show,
and I'm sure everybody was crying during that time. But

(01:04:41):
we all understand that there was time for him to
make that change. It was time for him to spend
the time with his family, and he went out wearing
a tuxedo, which is I thought was really really cool
in a classy way for him to walk away from
the State. But my question is who is going to

(01:05:03):
be that next person, Who is going to be the
person that could come in and be the next lead Corso. Now, no,
I don't believe Coach Saban is that guy. I don't
think that's his nature. He's not gonna be the one
up there putting on a headgear. Pat McAfee. He's just

(01:05:26):
a little bit too much for me. I know that
that Daz is definitely not doing it.

Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
It is neither is kirk So.

Speaker 1 (01:05:34):
I wonder if they replace Corso or do they leave
it as it is, because I already think there's too
many people up on that stage in the first place.

Speaker 5 (01:05:45):
I don't well, I don't think anybody's gonna come do
the head gear thing anymore. Oh, it's gonna be a
while before someone does the head gary thing again. Only
person I think they would dare do it with is
McAfee because his tuny personality. But as in bringing another coach,
another form of coach in y'all mentioned it last week, Mac.

Speaker 1 (01:06:10):
Would be good for this. And Mac used to be there, Yeah,
he used to be at the scoreboard desk. And I
think that Mac would be perfect because Mac is a
guy that can communicate well with others, and.

Speaker 5 (01:06:22):
He has a great entertaining personality. He has the charisma
to be that person. I know that the Stampede people
won't want him to go, but there might be an
opportunity for Mac if he truly wants to do that again,
but it'll be interesting to see.

Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
So I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (01:06:43):
I'm happy that they finally got a chance to give
him his fare his farewell speech. I was glad to
see that if you would have played the parlay, if
you would have parlayed every single pick that he had,
you would have made eighth thout. I was in five
hundred and seventy two dollars on if you would have

(01:07:05):
went with coach Lee Corso's picks. Now, most people you
look at them picks and you're like.

Speaker 2 (01:07:12):
I don't know about that.

Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
And we shall see how the rest of this season goes.
But it was very impressive to watch Lee Corso and
the outcry from the fans, everybody that would go and
say goodbye to him. So kudos to what ESPN, what
Fox was able to do in that particular moment. The

(01:07:34):
Top ten I believe will be released tomorrow. I think
that Texas I was asked yesterday where I thought Texas
was going to fall. I thought they would still be
in the top ten. I think they will be probably
number five or number six. I say, at worse eight
that's the worst, but five to six makes a lot sense. Yeah,

(01:07:54):
I think that is where they're going to fall because
don't forget, they failed to the defending national champion. They
failed to a team that had home field advantage, and
they failed to a team that just was better that day.

Speaker 2 (01:08:09):
But they only lost by seven points.

Speaker 5 (01:08:11):
Yeah when number three, number three and AP and number
two in the coaches.

Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
So yeah, so that was a good and they were favored.

Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
Also, that's a good barometer for this Texas football team
as we will see what ends up happening. But Joel
Klatt came out with his rankings already and Joel Clatt
has Ohio State as the new his new number one team.

Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
He has LSU as number two.

Speaker 1 (01:08:35):
He has Penn State three, Oregon four, Georgia five, Texas six,
Miami seven, Clemson eight, Notre Dame nine, and Florida State
number ten now Florida State. For them to be able
to jump that high in a poll after not being
right or well, I guess they were ranked, but you

(01:08:56):
start to look at what they were, I'm.

Speaker 2 (01:08:58):
No, they weren't ranked.

Speaker 1 (01:08:59):
They were ranked, and for them to be able to
jump up that high, I was like, Wow, that's a
pretty steep jump. But I think what Joel saw was
a team that played fast, a team that played with energy,
and a team that played with an attitude over Alabama,
who a lot of people.

Speaker 2 (01:09:17):
As I said, I believe.

Speaker 1 (01:09:19):
Josh Pate has Alabama being the national champion now this
one game. There's still a lot of ballgame left to play,
a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Of season left.

Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
But as you know, this stuff goes fast as each weekend.

Speaker 5 (01:09:33):
Yeah, and college you just need to make the final twelve.
You don't have to be in a final four. All
back in the days, the only two right, you get
a chance to do some things.

Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
We're gonna close out the show and send you.

Speaker 2 (01:09:44):
To Dan Patrick.

Speaker 1 (01:09:45):
But tonight we have one more game, Monday Night football,
but with the college flare to it right here on
the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio pay m thirteen hundred design.
Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here on the
Long Horse Monday of the Morning Kickoff. Mister Mark Henry
will be back tomorrow as he is flying back from
overseas and we'll be getting his breakdown as well. We'll

(01:10:09):
also be hearing from coach Sark as Coach Sark will
address the media today at eleven thirty, but you can
hear myself, Craigway, and Cam Parker from the stadium today
starting at eleven o'clock right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred Zone. Also, you can tune in this afternoon

(01:10:30):
and hear more of Craigway and Cam Parker on the
Craigway Show, the Voice of the Texas Longhorn. I'm sure
he'll have a great breakdown of all things that need
to be happening. Some people are saying that coach Sark
needs to hire an offensive quality analyst.

Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
I think he does have that.

Speaker 1 (01:10:51):
He's had that multiple seasons, so there will be some
times where they will talk about that. We also got
some text talking about the mechanics and how his intermediate
passes they need some work. Yes, for sure, there's some
things that need to happen. I also thought that the
running game was exciting to see, especially when you get

(01:11:14):
a chance to watch Trey Wisner and CJ. Baxter back
in the backfield together being able to catch the ball
out of the backfield as well as run the ball
in between the tackles. We'll hear more about the offensive
line today and see how coach Shark after he watched
the film, how he grades out everyone, But I want

(01:11:36):
you to hear from arch Manning because arch Manning is
obviously he's catching a lot of heat, and I understand
that people are kind of looking at him in a
different light. But let's not go crazy and think that
he's not able to play. Coach Shark said, he's going
to get on the playe He got on the plane
this weekend and knows that he's going to be just fine,

(01:11:57):
and arch is going to be better.

Speaker 2 (01:11:59):
But here art assessing his play.

Speaker 7 (01:12:07):
Yeah, ultimately not good enough. Obviously you don't want to
start off season bold one. They're a good team. But
I thought we beat ourselves a lot, and that starts
with me, and I got to play better for us
to win. I can't wait till the second half to
kind of get things going.

Speaker 1 (01:12:20):
And not only that, you ask them, hey, well what
do you say about the slow start.

Speaker 7 (01:12:25):
Yeah, it did start fastening. Took the whole half for
us to kunt of you can get ball down the field.

Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
So that starts with me.

Speaker 7 (01:12:32):
Gotta get back Spare one and get back one day
and go prepare for Sanada State.

Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
And he'll be ready to go.

Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
I mean, let's let's not trip out, as I said,
the Texas plays again this weekend eleven am kickoff against
San Jose State. They will come in that game, will
be ready to go, and he'll be ready. And now
you go back. This is where you learn to get better.
There will be some good things that he'll do in
this next game. There are some good things, some bad

(01:13:00):
things he'll do, but he's going to continue to get better.
And coach Shark says it all the time. That's the
life of a competitor. Those other guys are on scholarship
as well. Coming into the season, I thought the hype
was a little overbearing and it kind of played itself out.
But he did make some big time throws, He made
some good decisions, and he showed some poise in some

(01:13:23):
tough moments. Now, we still got to figure out what's
up with this arm mechanic thing, because it just didn't
look natural in some of those throws. But we'll see
what ends up happening moving forward. Also tonight, we get
we've had the whole offseason talking about Bill Belichick and
his girl, his booth ding who has been trying to

(01:13:44):
do some things with him and trying to.

Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
Be in the spotlight.

Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
Well it all comes to an end and it gets
back to football starting tonight, eight pm kickoff. You get
to see is it eight o'clock for real? I'm hoping
it's seven o'clock. I think it's seven o'clock. But anyway,
they will. TCU travels to Chapel Hill to take on
Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Hills. This is

(01:14:12):
a big time matchup. Everybody's been talking about it. It's
the first game for Bill.

Speaker 7 (01:14:17):
Bill.

Speaker 1 (01:14:17):
Yeah, seven am, I mean seven pm kickoff, Thank goodness.
I was like, man, you gotta get some sleep. I
mean watching this game all night long, trying to get
some sleep. Take an early na, no doubt. But Bill Belichick,
it's gonna be interesting to watch him as he tries
to adjust to this college football game. It seems to

(01:14:39):
be the noise is kind of settled down just a
little bit, but you understand that the college game is
different than the NFL game. You've got a first time quarterback,
Goo Lopez who transferred in from South Alabama. He was
named the starter. You got Max Johnson, whose dad was Johnson.

(01:15:00):
Max Johnson who played another quarterback that played at Texas
A and M that has now moved to another school.
Both quarterbacks are left handed. Sonny Dyke's a well respected
coach in these college ranks. The hornbro Frogs has their
quarterback Josh Hoover, who had the single season passing record

(01:15:23):
last year, passing for almost four thousand yards and throwing
twenty seven touchdowns. That's why I believe that TCU is
the highest ranked team, I mean the highest rank the
favorite team in this matchup.

Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
The over under is fifty five and a half.

Speaker 1 (01:15:42):
I don't know if that is going to play out
that way, but I'm excited to see this brand new
style of football because each team is brand new. Obviously,
with Bill Belichick his mindset as a defensive minded head coach,
I'm sure he's looked at plenty of film to be
able to lock in on what's good about this football team.

(01:16:05):
Talking about TCU, where the strengths and the weaknesses. But
I'm curious to how this game is going to play out.
Do you have any thoughts on this game tonight, Marcus.
I am expecting what exactly what she said. I expect
Bill Belichick to pull all the strings defensively. I expect
his defense to be what Carris this team not only

(01:16:26):
through this game, throughout the whole season. Yeah, they're gonna
need him a lot in this season and using his
expertise to kind of work their way through this. But
I'm telling you right now, if you start to look
at the quarterback for TCU, you're gonna realize that this
Josh Hoover kid is really really talented and there's going

(01:16:48):
to be some talk about how good he can be.
But he's definitely one of those guys that as you
look at this football season, you'll say, Oh, this dude
is really good.

Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Don't forget.

Speaker 1 (01:17:00):
They have a young player that is from the Austin
area that will be playing in this game. And his
name is Clint Small or ed Small excuse me. Ed
Small will be playing for this football team and he'll
be catching passes starting tonight for the TCU horn Frogs.

Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
Brayln James he is there as well. He is a.

Speaker 1 (01:17:27):
Stony Point wide receiver. He will get a chance to
play in this game as well. So there has been
some movement throughout. There are some opportunities there. Austin Jordan
who used to be at Texas. He is playing in
this game for TCU, So you're gonna get a chance
to see some local talent tonight as they take on

(01:17:50):
the North Carolina Guitar Hills for Marcus, for Mark Henry,
I'm Harball Harves. Make sure you tune in to the
press conference today starting at eleven o'clock with myself and
Craig Way and Cam Parker, followed by Coach Shark at
eleven thirty. He'll give us an update on all things
Texas Longhorse, and then of course tune in to the

(01:18:13):
Craig Way Show starting at two pm this afternoon the
Marcus I'm Harbaugh harsh Just remember this, don't believe everything
you see, because Evel Saw looks like should see tomorrow. Folks.

Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
Peace,
