Eavan's Sports. It's the Henry and Henry and associates. Addition

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Morning, Good Morning Austin, Texas. Good morning Mark Henny, real
strongest man. Appreciate Marcus Spears holding everything down behind the scenes.
What the audience did not see. It was a bit
of a rat race here to get us on the air,
but we made it in on time and plenty to
get into Appreciate y'all fellas having me back here on

(01:29):
this Wednesday, Texas Football. Mark. We've been talking about it
all week. In fact, the Longhorns have returned to camp.
The Longhorns will take the practice field for the first
time this fall, two day availability starting at two forty
five today, and it'd be good to see the boys
out there on the practice field, see what they what

(01:49):
they have.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Mark, Hey, it's football Christmas. It's football Christmas. I'm just
the just the thought of hearing Pad's clack is a
beautiful sound to me.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
It's like hearing poetry, jazz.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
You know. Craig Way and I talked about the music
and in his list of questions he gave me and.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
That's the way I hear football.

Speaker 5 (02:15):
You know.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
I'm sure that you know you you played baseball a
little bit too, Like the sound of a ball hitting
the bat. You know, they're just the stuff about the
squeaks on the basketball court, you know, like you know,
hearing the nets, you know, like there's that's that's music
to athletes.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Mark, I could sit here and wax poetically about my job,
but the greatest thing about my job is everything you
just talk about. Right there, I get a chance to
get after the practice field, hear those pads, clacks, smell
of the grass. It's baseball. You hear the bat he's
in now with the smell of the grass. And I
have been a Texans that I have been asti Texans.
So maybe I mean that metaphorically. Okay, I see what

(02:58):
the metaphor there, Mark, But yesterday we had a chance
before we get out to the practice fields to hear
from the Texas football staff for the first time as
best I understand it, in Steve Sarkisan's five years. Definitely
the first time in my three years. We didn't just
hear from the coordinators. We heard from all of the staff,

(03:18):
the position coaches. So it was a lot of insight
into this Texas football team. And Mark, you, I'll tell
you this right now. I think one of the biggest
takeaways for me from yesterday, and I don't mean this
as a negative thing, but you hear the level of
confidence from this coaching staff in terms of and we

(03:39):
talked about a little bit on the show last week
and on Monday. This is the first roster that is
completely Steve sarkesians. Mark. Remember year five. You don't have
any of the guys that were recruited by Tom Herman.
And it's not shaty and the players who recruited by
previous staff. But you know, these coaches came in and
everyone on the roster's theirs. You know, they made all

(03:59):
the home visits, they went to the portals, secured all
these guys.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
But Eve, why wouldn't you be confident when you made
the cake? When I cook and everybody comes over, I
know what's about to happen. I know that everybody's gonna
smile and all Mark Man, you I did yourself.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
That's what you live for.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Sark has put together a three deep at quarterback of
three deep at running back. They have six quality, proven
wide receivers and tight ends.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Then you did.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
The offensive line is the only the offensive line is
the only thing that is not proven. But all of
those guys, those eight have been so we got a
little technical difficulties to finish your report.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Mark, All of the guys have been in the They've
been in the system, in the system.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
I've been in the building the same thing with the defense.
So why wouldn't you be excited?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Yeah, And to kind of further that point again, that's
a great analogy. You talked about, Hey, if you're making
the meal when you are the ones to use the
old Bill Parcell's line. Right, I bought the groceries, I
want to cook the meal, right right, This roster is
all Steve Sarkejan and Brandon Harrison company. As far as
they bought the groceries, they're cooking the meal. And you
just hear the level of confidence. I even think back

(05:30):
you talk about the tight end room, right and the
conversation about you know, Gunner Helm and who's going to
replace him, and a lot of the conversation has been
about jack injuries. But I can't even think back to yesterday,
Mark and hear the confidence they have in Amari Winston,
a true freshman, a Nick Townsend, Jordan Washington, just the
list goes on. So to hear that confidence is huge.
But of course it all comes back to quarterback, right. Yeah,

(05:52):
and there is one guy that offensive coordinator Kyle Flood
talked about, this little guy named Arch Manning. You may
have heard of him, maybe talked about one of the
maybe not so hidden attributes that he believes the strength
in his game. Marcus don't have that sense. So I'll
go and explain to you, and I think this is key, Mark,
and I really want your thoughts on this as someone

(06:12):
who you know, worked a job and lived in the
spotlight for the majority of your your adult life. He
talked about Arch being a Manning right his entire life.
He's been a Manning. So doing all of this, the media,
the endless talk about being Texas's quarterback, it doesn't phase him.
And that's the thing that I noticed at SEC media days.

(06:33):
You can put a thousand people around him, it doesn't
phase him. He knows how to be himself. Mark, And
just talk about that for a second, because I think
you know, the average, the average player, the average you
know recruit, no matter if you're a five star or not,
you don't grow up with all of that spotlight on
top of you. Mark.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Well, I think he's also been groomed to be who
he became, right. You know, you have a grandfather that
has you know, it's good, maybe hall of fame, but.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
If not very close.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
His uncles both are going to be in the Hall
of Fame and people question whether or not Eli deserves
or not, but do won two Super Bowls. He's going
to the Hall of Fame. But now you have Arch
who has been led by them. And his father was
a damn good wide receiver and an athletic. He was

(07:31):
he was the one that got the original guy in
the family that got the Grandpa Jean the speed. Yeah,
so Arch has it too because he got it from
his dad. He got it from his grandfather. He's comfortable
with the knowledge that they've given it. And they've told him, Look,
if you're going to leave, you got where do you
leave from From the front line, who's on the front line,

(07:54):
your alignment. Foster those relationships and make sure that you're
good with them. And he's done that, and you see
that he hangs out with that offensive line like they're
his bodyguards and something.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
I mean, technically they are. Marcus the play that sound
of Kyle Flood talk about Arch Manning.

Speaker 6 (08:13):
One of the.

Speaker 7 (08:14):
Advantages that he has is he has been a Manning
his whole life, and he has been in the spotlight
for a long time. And I think similar to Quinn
who had been in the spotlight for a long time.
Those situations now where he has to be in front
of the media. He's used to doing that, where another
quarterback who maybe didn't have those that kind of exposure
early on, it might be something new that he has

(08:35):
to handle, whereas standing in a room in front of
all you guys right now, that's not something new for him.
You know, he's been doing that for a long time.
So I think that that creates a little bit of ease.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
For him exactly, is what I just said, Like I
mean to bounce off of the sound. He's been a
man in his whole life, and he's been and you know,
you look at Peyton's sign. He he's already in the spotlight.
He's throwing passes the NFL players and there and looking

(09:07):
really good doing it. So he is, like Arches is
a guy that you don't have to worry about the
moment being too big for him. And you see when
he scores, he's looking back at players. He's doing the
like throwing the horns up like I mean, he wonts

(09:27):
in order to be good, in order to celebrate, Like
I tell my daughter, the way that you celebrate is
to win.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
There you go, and just to kind of round out
again what we heard from the offensive coaches is you know,
in addition to talking about Arch Manning, let's go to
the running back room real quick, Mark and I chance
to talk with first year running backs coach Chad Scott.
Big shooester fil right feeling to Shark Choice left to
go back to the NFL Detroit Lions, and we talked
with coach Scott. I what struck me the most, Mark

(09:54):
is his presence right because remember to Shark Choice had
a lot of respect from those guys. Right now, the
new coach has to come in earn that respect. That
really stood out to me with Chad Scott'll run down
the list. We talked about some of the tight ends.
Jeff Banks really raving about that tight end room. I
think that's going to be a strength. Kyle Flood the
one thing Mark I know, I got to get set

(10:15):
you up here before we go to break the big boys.
Talked about the battle at right tackle. Mark, that's gonna
be real, so it's gonna be interesting. The other four
spots appeared to be set, but at right tackle, keep
an eye. Andre Kojo is going to be competing for
that spot with Brandon Baker.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
We'll see what happens through fall camp a rolling ball
of raizor blade. That dude is mean and I remember
seeing him last year try to take somebody's head off
and it's three seconds after the play. So when you
got guys that want to go get you like, that's
that's a good quality thing for arch Man and Mark.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
You know you can attest to this, right, You gotta
have a little bit at nasty and a little bit
of that meaning you right, you know what, man like.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
We'll talk about it on a side but like that's
an under.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Regarded quality in football. No gotta have some nasty, no
doubt about it, all right, Morning Kickoff AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. We got the bugs and the gremlins worked out,
so we are flying off to a fast start. Morning Kickoff,
Mark Henry, Eric Henry, twenty four to seven Sports. We'll
be back in a moment Sports Talk AM thirteen hundred

(11:25):
The Zone. It is the Morning Kickoff. Eric Henry, twenty
four to seven Sports. Pensittin for hard Ball hard who
was on a well deserved, much earned vacation. He'll be
back Monday alongside the world's strongest man, Mark Henry and
Marcus Spirits. Won everything down behind these scenes before we

(11:45):
getting to the segment. Got to remind you to listen
to The Cragway Show. Cannot forget to listen to The
Cragway Show two to six pm. If you missed the show,
listen to it on the Craig Way Show podcast, which
is available on the iHeart Art Radio app or wherever
you listen to podcasts. Coming off of Texas football, we'll

(12:07):
move away from the Longhorns just for a brief moment.
Of course, we got plenty of Longhorn talk. We will
get back into it with Danny Davis of the Austin
American Statesman at seven thirty four, but just wanted to
dive into a bit of an interesting story here and
it kind of caught my attention. We talked about it
before we went on the air in terms of Scottie Scheffler.
Of course, Ut Longhorn. Are very proud ut Longhorn and

(12:31):
the success that he's had. You know, I think he
can make the case arguably one of the greatest golfers
since Tiger Woods in terms of that run. But initially
there were some comments by Skip Bayless and listen, I'm
not here to shad Skip Bayless, but when you hear him,
it kind of goes in one ear and out the other.
Mark says he'll shades Kip Bayless. It kind of goes

(12:51):
in one ear and out the other. But there's been
this conversation about his commitment to his craft, his commitment
to golf, and how it kind of it it pales
in terms of Scotty's saying I'm going to be a
parent first, I'm going to be a family man first,
and he should. And what really caught my eye was
Tom Brady. I'm gonna pull up the quote here from

(13:14):
Awful Announcing where Tom Brady talks about even him questioning
him prioritizing family over golf, and Mark, I'm gonna get
your thoughts, so I just want to read the quote
real quick. The quote from tom Brady is Scotty said
he would rather be a better father and husband than golfer.
And my question is this is Tom Brady speaking. My
question is why are those mutually exclusive? Sure they're on

(13:36):
different blocks of the pyramid, but they're part of the
same pyramid. They're connected. And I couldn't think for a
better person to come to this conversation with Mark, someone
who spent what two two hundred and fifty days a
year on the road, trying twenty five years for over
two decades, trying to provide a great living for his family,
but still also being a family man. Mark, what were
your thoughts when you kind of hear this conversation first?

Speaker 2 (13:56):
You know, it starts with your wife, you know, like,
what are the goals you know, to provide, to go
and do what you love. But more than anything, you
want to provide, I wasn't going to drop the kids off.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
I wasn't going to pick the kids up.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
I mean when I'm home, I want to do it
because I want them to see that dad cares and
that he wants to do it. I want them to
see me wanting to be active participants in their life.
That's what fathers do. But everybody has a role to play.
The mother's role. She delegates duties to the nannies if

(14:37):
you have them, and if you don't and you don't
live that life, then you have to do it.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
Like my wife is ivy league educated.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
I mean, she could have done many things, but she
chose to take care of us. And that's what I
feel like Scotty is trying to say, is I'm choosing
to be the father that takes their kids to school
and drops some all and picked them up.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
You can't be mad at that.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
But the role of the wife in that, in that
matter is you know, it's it's the top.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
Of the period, you know, Mark I I you actually
swayed my opinion when we talked about a pre show,
because initially I heard it and I was like, man,
this is you know, why does it have to be
the situation where you got to understand what you're doing
in place of your kids? But then it made me
think back to kind of my childhood and also my
situation now working my job right now, make it quick,

(15:35):
you know, and not saying finances are everything right, but
you were able to provide a great living for your family.
Scottie Scheffler is able to dride a great living for
his family. I think back to my dad who missed
the occasional football game, the occasional basketball game, and my dad,
you know, worked at a nine to five right. And
again I'm not saying money solves everything, but when you

(15:55):
have a very unique opportunity like you had unique skills
like you, like Scotti Scheffler had, I guess there does
need to be a mid ground and real quick, I
think about myself because you know, at thirty four and
doing this job, people don't realize when you're on the
road a lot. I'm not on the road as much
as Mark was, but I did seventy nights in a
hotel room last year. You know, you cover football, basketball, baseball,

(16:17):
You're gonna travel and I think you know where I
kind of land on this. I know Marcus had some
thoughts as well. Where I kind of land on this
is when you have the opportunity to provide a unique
living for your family, there probably does need to be
some give and take. And I say that not having
kids right now, but I feel like when you broke
it down to me the way you did in the
pre show and as you just did here, it kind

(16:37):
of rounded out.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Un you have to work together on this and the
parent that's at home. It might be the father that's
at home, and the mother is the athlete or the
entertainer or whatever. Like, somebody's got to be there holding
everything down and letting the kids know, Hey, your father
is at work providing his life for us.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Your mother is at work in his life of us.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
So we could be able to do all of this,
Like you, it's got to be a work together and
you got to care.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
That's that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Like and even the kids, I told you, Like my daughter,
she's non.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Committaled sometimes in her love for what she does and
she'll go, oh, I don't matter, and I don't know,
it does matter.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
I want you to cry when you lose. I want
you to want to win so bad that that becomes everything.
That's what Brady did, right, That's what a lot of
athletes that have done, where they put prioritized as sports
over their families and that becomes a habit. Now that's
a whole other conversation.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
You know, what you're doing outside of your sport when
you're gone is a problem, right then that's something that's
another conversation behind. But when it comes to like getting
to work and trying to be focused and stuff like that,
Like Scotty Schuffler, I don't I don't criticize him for
the fact that he wants anonymity, that he wants to

(18:06):
be able to be a guy that can go to
the mall with his kids and not have everybody. Oh,
Scotty's right, Like that that comes with athletics but you know,
at what costs me personally.

Speaker 8 (18:19):
I think Scotty has a great balance. I don't I
don't see an issue with what Scotty's doing. I think
their issue with Brady. Brady was a promoter of the game.
He put his face on the game, he was out there,
and I think Skip wants him to Scotty to be
more like Brady of a person that's put being the
face of the sport, promoting the sport and.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Not sacrificing his family for no.

Speaker 8 (18:45):
But here's the problem. Here's the problem with that problem,
with that analogy. Scotty's winning. So if Scotty's winning and
he's being a great family man man, it seems to
me that he cracked the cold. He done figured it out.
I'm with what Scotty's.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
Doing me too, And I'll say this, you know, my
thought is this, And I'm not poking fun at anyone's pain,
all right, because you know, we've all been in relationships,
We've all had relationships didn't work out. But I'm not
one hundred percent sure that I think Tom Brad should
be the spokesperson from work life balance.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
No, not so much, not so much. I mean Tom
saying listen. I know I said I was gonna retire,
but man, I got this one more opportunity.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
I still got. I got a lot lifing the I
can do this.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
No, when you get that ultimatum right, you need a
guy to say, you know what, I'm gonna put my
foolish things down, as a Bible will say, and going
to be the beat the deacon at the church. But
go ahead and be the president of the social club
for the kids.

Speaker 8 (19:59):
But and then again, she knew who she married, Tom
was like that before she married him.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
That's true.

Speaker 8 (20:06):
That's a good point. That's a good point. It is
not like he switched up on her. He was that
guy when you married him. So you gotta let left
the person that when you love someone, you gotta love
him for who they are before you not loved them anymore.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
That reminds me of that old parable about the toad
and the scorpion, where the toad the scorpion asked the
toad for a ride across the lake, and the toad said, no,
you're gonna You're gonna stick me in. We're gonna die.
And he said no, why would I try to hurt myself?

Speaker 3 (20:38):
And he got on he said all right, well come on,
and they got out there and show enough scorpion stabs.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
He said, now we're gonna die. And he said, you
knew it was a scorpion when I got on your back.
That's what it is.

Speaker 8 (20:51):
It's like you know you're dealing with I was thinking
more or less of Jake the snake on the Ultimate Warrior.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
Never trust the Snake. That was a good one, Marcus.
I'll say this real quick, you know, because this is
the thing that I think you know. And listen again,
I've never been married. I'm hoping to reach that point
in my relationship. Doubt so we might have give advice.
But Tom gave her a taste of what the retired
life was. Remember Tom retired and then a few months
later said, oh man, I'm not done. So I think

(21:19):
that was the error is he gave her the taste
of like, all right, I finally got that co parent back.
And then Tom said, wait a minute, I got one more.
I got I got a little more left from the tank.
And then he switched up out of Marc. And that's
what happened.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
August.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
I show I'm used to playing around. Great conversation, and
we're back in a moment with Danny Davis of the
Awesome American Statesment. You are listening to the Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It is
the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen

(21:54):
hundred The Zone. World Strongest Man w W Hall of
Famer Mark Henry Eric Henry twenty four to seven, Sports
pinch hitting for Hardball hards and of course, in his
usual segment here on Wednesdays, we are going to be
talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. And Danny,

(22:15):
believe it got you in the background. You're ready go,
my man, I'm ready to go.

Speaker 6 (22:19):
I feel a little out of place. My last name's
out Henry. So see what we can do here.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Welcome to Henry and Henry Associates. How can I help you, sir?

Speaker 3 (22:28):
We can make the law firm Henry, Henry and Davis
for this segment only. Danny appreciate you making the time
and I just want to jump right into things. Of course,
we're coming off of Texas Football Media Day where we
spoke to the coordinators and for the first time's best
I understand, also spoke to the assistant coaches as well, Danny,
what were maybe one two of your biggest takeaways from

(22:48):
media day yesterday.

Speaker 6 (22:51):
There's a lot of assistant coaches I guess they haven't
been paying attention but this new wave of college football
and some of the things you're allowed to allowed to do.
But oked around the defensive press conference they brought with
the defensive coaches and it was like it was like
six guys in here.

Speaker 9 (23:08):
We've already talked to PK. So there.

Speaker 6 (23:11):
Steve, I guess spent some time loading up on the
defensive staff. Obviously he's pretty hands on with the offensive staff.
They only needed four guys in that room since Kyle
spoke here earlier and Jeff Banks as well, and we'll
talk to Steve today, so there wasn't as many offensive assistants,
but lots of defensive guys.

Speaker 9 (23:29):
Lots of new guys in that room, some guys we
hadn't talked to before.

Speaker 6 (23:32):
And you know, we finally got to meet Johnny Nansen
because he wasn't able to do the Peach Bowl availability
last year, so some new guys to talk to.

Speaker 9 (23:40):
It was nice to talk to some of his assistants
and Steve keeps those guys in their raps.

Speaker 6 (23:44):
Over the season, but football seasons here was a big
pickoff for the for the season.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
I guess, Dan, what was your sense of how the
relationship between the new coaches and the existing coaches from
last year.

Speaker 9 (24:00):
Everyone is saying the right things.

Speaker 6 (24:01):
I mean, no one's gonna come in there and say
I'm not getting along with these guys. But it helps
the continuity with the with the big guys. Obviously, Steve
has been there five years, as it has all of
those coordinators. You PK has been there a while, Jeff
Banks and Kauf Flood, The've been here since Steve got here.
So it helps with the guys on top, there's continuity there.
And then when you have those new guys, with one

(24:22):
of them being Dwaynea Kina, who obviously is very familiar
with this program and knows a lot about Texas and
the Texas Way and all that stuff. That helps when
you you're incorporating those new guys out that like that
who knows his way way around the building. So I
think everyone's getting along just fine. It's also July, so
we'll see, uh, we'll see what's happening during the season.

(24:42):
But it helps from the guys on top have been here,
been here for a while, Danny.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
We always we already know that winning is a great deodorant,
is there?

Speaker 4 (24:53):
And I'm not asking for you for dirt.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
I'm just saying that everything is not always peachy, King Like,
is there anything or is there something that you saw
that you feel like needed work or that was kind
of like, uh, didn't give you the warm and fuzzies.

Speaker 6 (25:11):
No, But once again, it's July. We'll see what happens
if this team loses on August thirtieth or or sometimes
in the season there, you know, they have to actually
face some adversity. Well, we'll see what happens. This is
also a coaching staff and a team. Although there's not
a lot of left over from that five and seven,
you know, but obviously Stevens coordinators Michael Taff maybe like

(25:32):
a walk on or two are still left and they
managed to get over that adversity. So I think we'll
see how everyone's getting along and how this team is
kind of the ebbs and blows this team and once
they actually have to face some adversity.

Speaker 9 (25:44):
But it's July. We all expect Texas to be one.

Speaker 6 (25:47):
Or two in those preseason polls, So I think everything
is going great over the forty acres, but we'll see
what once because there will be some rocky patches, but
we'll see what happens and when that actually happens.

Speaker 3 (25:57):
If you're just join us. We're joined by Dan Davis
of the Austin American Statesman. You can find him at
Twitter or x at Underscore Danny Davis. Danny, I got
to play to my co host strengths here and we
started to talk about this in the first segment. Would
love to get your thoughts, you know, the offensive line
for the most part, It's been a steady part of
conversation throughout the offseason, but you know, for again, for

(26:20):
the most part, kind of who some of those names
are going to be across the line. But offensive coordinator
slash offensive line coach Kyle Flood did say that there
is a healthy competition at right tackle. Just curious what
you make of that and maybe any other competitions or
possible competitions that you maybe keeping your eye on when
we make our way to the Frank Denius fields this afternoon.

Speaker 6 (26:42):
I mean, I would hope there's a competition in every
single of those spots except for maybe you know, DJ Campbell,
kind of has that lockdown on the guard spots, and
you figure Trevor has a heads up at left tackle
since he did get some playing time when he started
twice last year or got playing time in two significant games,
I wouldn't expect him to completely have stuff locked down.
But this is a new look offensive liney, you'd hope

(27:03):
that there's a healthy competition at every spot with some
of those guys who have been run the program for two, three,
even four years, since Texas likes to develop its offensive
alignment as opposed to hitting the transfer portal for those spots,
So you would hope with a lot of with four
open spots, that there would be a lot of competition.
So you're hearing Kyle say that wasn't necessarily surprising to me.

(27:27):
You would hope there's a lot of guys chomping at
the bit to get some playing time and get their
chance on chances in the spotlight. But there's gonna be
a lot of It's gonna be a new look line,
and if you're a Texas fan, you hope that the
line that they trot out for Ohio State is consistent
throughout the season. But that's not a guarantee either we'll
see how these guys actually look when they're facing some

(27:48):
real lot of competition and not non guys in practice
or in the same jersey.

Speaker 4 (27:53):
Shout out to you, Danny, h Yeah, we had.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
We saw the people on the internet saying that, Wow,
finally somebody will ask the coaches the tough questions.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
That is a journalist. Journalist, we respect you, sir. It's
funny that Danny sees it that way. I'll make this
point super quick that while I do agree that there's
probably gonna be a healthy competition, I guess my perspective again,
I'm not challenging Danny on this, is that based on
the guys you have returning, it would be in my perspective, Mark,

(28:23):
it'd be kind of surprising if there is a left
tackle a third tackle that can come in and beat
out a Trevor Gooseby, or a guard a third guard
that can beat out a Nato Umazulu at this point,
because I feel like those guys have been groomed to
this point. But Danny real quick slipping it to the
defensive side of the ball. Any major takeaways, anything interesting
you heard there as far as from offense, g or

(28:44):
Piekokowski not really.

Speaker 6 (28:47):
I mean, he obviously had some high praise to say
about some of the guys on the team. You know,
there's some technical stuff that I whatever, some of them
starts talking about specific players or technical stuff. I kind
of zeled out, so I kind of lost him on
some of that stuff. But I think the big thing
that came out of yes Ye's availability and I was
a part of the scrum, was them talking a little
bit about Michael Tapp maybe going down to Starr and

(29:10):
not giving them some more chances to get some of
their more you know, get their best, you know, five
defensive backs on the field. So that's interesting. We'll see
if that actually happens. But you know, p K is
a pretty straightforward guy. It's not not gonna go up
there and joke around with us or you know, have
a lot of.

Speaker 9 (29:28):
Witty stuff to say. He's pretty straightforward.

Speaker 6 (29:30):
And I think a lot of stuff he said all
the kind of stuff we were we were expecting him
to say. But obviously, you know, there's a lot of
hope for a Colin Simmons and Anthony l some of
those guys coming in. And I mean you talked a
lot about with p K about the communication that defensive backfield,
and you know that was kind of mirrored with Steve said,
you know that's gonna take a lot of just practice,
and you know, having a lot of some other guys

(29:52):
that Geloni McDonalds and of those other guys step up,
so it's not Michael tap barking out instructions out there.
So I I think I kind of got what I
expected out of PK yesterday, but I think something stuffy
assistant SAT was a little bit more in depth and surprising.

Speaker 9 (30:09):
I suppose you.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
Heard it from the man there himself. He is Danny
Davis of the Austin American Stations. We're doing a great
job for a long time in this market covering the
Texas Longhorns. Danny appreciate you, and we'll be back with
more of the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred Zone. In a moment, it is the Morning Kickoff

(30:32):
here on sports and for US radio. Excuse me, AM
thirteen hundred Zone. I am Eric Henry, twenty four to
seven Sports Pinchion for Hardball Harge alongside Mark Henry. And
before we get into this segment, talking a little arch
manning and the rumors being shot down by Cleveland Brown's
owner Jimmy Haslam, got to give you all your third

(30:53):
keyword of the week. Remember you listen to Harje and
Henry or this week Henry and Henry all week long
for your chance to win tickets to see Ghost August
fourteenth at Moody Center. To enter, download the iHeartRadio app
search AM thirteen hundred zone, tap that red microphone, leave
us a message with the keyword you heard on the radio.

(31:14):
And I'm not gonna give away the keyword from yesterday
like I did yesterday, so you had to be listening.
Today's keyword is better better Marcus. I don't think that's
what I need to spell. Yeah, I think they shouldn't
know how to spare it out. I think they can
get that one. So there you go. There your tips
to see Ghost August fourteenth at Moody Center. But gonna

(31:38):
bring it back to the forty acres again. Appreciate Danny
Davis were jumping on with us. Great nuggets he gave there.
But remember there was some conversation last week, a little
bit earlier this month, and it feels like this is
gonna be a theme all season long, especially if Arch
Manning has a great game. They're gonna be these talks
of should he come out, should he be the number
one pick, all these things that it's like, you know,

(31:59):
first off, the Manning family has been steadfast in their
commitment to developing talents. Right, It's not like they've rushed
anyone out to go to the NFL, whether been Peyton
or Eli. But there were the rumors of Arch Manning
and the Cleveland Browns and the whole thing set up
in Cleveland. Brown's owner Jimmy has Them basically shot those down.
He said that he doesn't even know Arch Manning. This

(32:21):
is Jimmy has Them addressing the media at Cleveland Brown's
training camp, saying he doesn't know Arch at all. I
bet he stays in college two more years. I don't
even think that's worth discussing. Mark. First off, are you
ready for arch Mania? Because you know it's gonna be
this way all year long? Wit, What do you mean?
Am I ready for it to happen? It already started.

(32:44):
That's a good point. The time that he came to Texas,
Like all we.

Speaker 2 (32:48):
Did is talk about Arch Manning for the last two years,
and the fact that you know, this is a guy
that played very sparingly in this system, he still got
the line share of the conversation with a five star
quarterback that was arguably the most recruited quarterback in the
history of ut as well as the fact that the

(33:13):
quarterback in front of him pretty much has almost every
award that Vince Young doesn't have, and a lot of
the records that Vince Young did have he broke. I mean,
not the Russian ones, but throwing wise, like, it's a
myriad of categories that he heads and leads, so Archs

(33:37):
be able to get more the line's share of the attention,
even though Quinn was that good of a quarterback, says
everything you need to know.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
Mark, You know, I gotta look at it from a
reporter's perspective. You're right because all of the rumors that's
just you know it's going to happen. But I bring
it back to Texas football as a program for them
to be able to get two years of arch manning
at quarterback. It has this trickle down effect, right because
when you take a look at today's college football and
the transfer portal and how many teams across the nation,

(34:10):
it's two spots that you see teams consistently hit the
transfer portal for you see teams bringing in multiple quarterbacks, right,
you see teams bringing in three, four or five offensive linemen.
Texas has been able to not enter the transfer portal
for offensive linemen. They recruit and develop them. And the
same thing with quarterback right now, of course, when you
were technically a transfer, but we all know his history.

(34:32):
He was a Texas kid and you know, spent the
one year at Ohio State. We're not counting that, right,
But here's the trickle down effect that allows you to
develop Trey Owens in your system for multiple years. You
have Da Bell, the five star recruit, son of former
NBA roleplayer Raja Bell. He'll have time to develop. And
then here's in my mind, the Jedi mind trick that

(34:53):
Steve sarkeighan. I've never seen those movies. Maybe I'm using
the phrase long wrong, but here's the thing that Steve
Sarkegan has done. He's recruiting these legacy kids. Right. So,
Philip Rivers, son Gunner Rivers, is someone who's a target
of Texas football.

Speaker 8 (35:07):
I wonder which kid is that?

Speaker 3 (35:10):
That is true? If we talk about Nick Cannon and
those other people, right, and.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
That dude has eleven kids. That is a good point.
I don't know if I remember everybody name.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
You can probably recruit like three or four, three or
four of them right the future. But Mark, something that
I want to pass back to you on this right,
when you recruit a Manning, the son of a former
NBA player, a son of a former NFL player, they're
not in a rush, You'll get the bag. They're not
in a rush to do those things. They're willing to
buy into the process of development, and it keeps Texas

(35:42):
football out of the transfer portal when it comes to quarterback.

Speaker 4 (35:44):
Markt and their fathers know.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
What it takes to get it done right, and they
tell their sons and their daughters, Guys, you're gonna have
to outwork everybody. Because if I'm the coach and I
played high level, yeah, you can always throw that at him. Listen,
I played at a pretty high level, and I've never

(36:08):
had a coach tell me that I'm too studied. But
I've heard coaches tell people, hey, you haven't been in
the playbook enough because you don't know this, And that's
the last guy you want to be, right.

Speaker 3 (36:22):
You don't want to be that guy. Hey, man, what's
what's the play. If I hear a player ask another player,
why don't you know?

Speaker 4 (36:31):
Why does he have to tell you?

Speaker 3 (36:32):
Right? You know, I'm old school. I'm kind of broadbeat
you a little bit. Listen, I'm not mad at that. Hey,
I don't care what level sports he played. You all
have that experience where, you know, especially football, right, we've
all been there. You know, you turn to God like,
what's the play? The coach, here's you get out the game? Right, yeah,
get out? But yeah, I think in terms of arch

(36:54):
Manning playing multiple years, that's the trickle down effect, right,
That's where Texas football can go in and say, all right,
we need to spot defensive tackle. We're gonna go get
four guys. We need to spot feel tight end. We
can go get a guy because you have quarterback lockdown,
you have all line mark lockdown mark.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
But those plan the two positions that I really think
that you need to develop them that you don't need
to go get a talent. It's center and quarterback. You
need them two or three years running the place, talking
to the coaches in the meetings, going over it and
over it again and again for two years, and then

(37:32):
when your opportunity shows up, you know everything you hit
the ground running.

Speaker 4 (37:35):
You hit the ground running.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
And then Texas that's the philosophy that Texas uses with
his centers, with his quarterbacks like that. That's you know,
they they recruited linebackers and defensive ends and tackles where
they just such athletically talented people. You just put them
on there and say go one hundred miles an hour.
Even if you mess up, we're good.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
It's as simple as that, and that philosophy's work well
for Texas foot We also get ready for multiple years
of arch matting. We'll be back AM thirteen hundred The
Zone Morning Kickoff, head into our number two. We'll be
back in a moment. Good morning, Austin, Texas. We are
flying high into the eight am our appreciate you listening

(38:17):
wherever you are listening from us at home and your
car drive into work. It is the morning kickoff here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. World Strongest
Man Mark Henry, Eric Henry twenty four to seven sports
pinch hitting and before we dive into what we heard
from the defensive coaches, some stand out All American types
returning for the Longhorns. Gott to Let you know, when

(38:40):
you're listening to AM thirteen hundred the zone on the
free iHeartRadio app, you can talk to us with one tap.
It's the new talkback Mike. Here's how it works. Just
open the AM thirteen hundred the zone AA open AM
thirteen hundred zone on the free Heart Free iHeart Radio app. Then,
when you have something to say, tap the talkback mike
and record your message. You can even listen back to

(39:01):
your message and make sure it sounds perfect. But as
I said, give you a warner, make sure you tread lightly.
You say the wrong thing, might mess around. Get the
world's Strongest Slam. Part two of my killing spree might start,
So make sure you tread lightly. But of course you
could do that. Mark, don't threaten the people. There are listeners,
They're nothing to worry about. Don't get a line, right, yeah,

(39:22):
we don't get out of the line, don't. Hey, listen
for some people people taking me in my face. For
some people, they.

Speaker 8 (39:27):
Will pay for a audio of Mark Henry threatening them, like.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
Oh man, Mark Canrey threatened me. I want to play this.
Wait a minute, you said that'll pay Hey, okay, that's
a little business for you. I've threatening of people.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
What's the what's the website? I can't think of the
web cameo. I used to do it all the time.
I don't do it anymore.

Speaker 8 (39:47):
You can do some cameos, doing some promos though people.

Speaker 2 (39:50):
Man, it was taking me like two hours a day
to do those, and then they got a line share.

Speaker 3 (39:56):
Of the money. I'm like, oh, I don't want to
do that. Okay, never mind, it's about the paper. It's
about the paper man. It wasn't worth. It wasn't one
of those you know, rep shares with you know what
I'm saying, where the now?

Speaker 2 (40:09):
If it was sixty forty right right, you know, seventy
thirty yeah, in my favorite Yeah, yeah, I would have
kept doing it.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
But it wasn't.

Speaker 8 (40:17):
So maybe I'm in the wrong business. Maybe I need
to start a platform like that.

Speaker 3 (40:21):
I think I think there is a platform like that,
but I don't know if I can reference it on
the air. Well, okay, Bark, just reference it.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
I said that I was going to get an only
fans account, but I was only going to show my elbow.

Speaker 3 (40:36):
Look at that elbow. It's all all the I will
say this. I'm gonna say this quick, Bark i'mould say
this quick bark, we get to the south Mark I had.
I was working at SEC Media Days and I was
walking into the main area where the coaches are speaking, right, okay,
and you know, we have our credentials and whatnot. And

(40:58):
I there was a young lady who approached me and
said that she would offer me. She was trying. She's
an aspiring sports content creator watch yourself, right, but she
has a side hustle. And she tried to offer me
a subscription to her page in exchange for my credential.

(41:20):
Oh no, I don't know what do you are? What
about you? Where is your ethics? I like you like that? Yeah?
You know what?

Speaker 2 (41:29):
This is a business where ethics really matters. Because we
could go into business for ourselves. That's a wrestling turn.
Harsh loves that when we when I teach him a
wrestling turn, don't get hot. You know, Hey, that's a gimmick.
You know, ethics plays the important role. You cannot go
into business for yourself and think that we're going to

(41:52):
change everything because of one individual.

Speaker 3 (41:55):
You can't do that.

Speaker 8 (41:56):
Mark and Mark, you talking about wrestling terms. The one
I love is it's a real.

Speaker 4 (42:01):
Oh, it's a rib like joking people.

Speaker 3 (42:03):
But this wasn't no rib. That's the thing, Mark and Mark.
She wasn't rib and she was really wanted Joe credential
so she can get in. Do you know what I'd
have to conversation be like with my parents after they
funded my college education to get this degree, to be like, oh,
I lost my job, I had a she went in
there and did something. Now I don't what if she'd

(42:25):
have went in there in street and she had your
id on. That's the point done. That's why see straight
up saying nah sonna, I'm good. That is why ethics,
journalistic ethics matter. But on to Texas football, back to
the Longhorns. As I mentioned, we heard from the Texas
football coaching staff yesterday, a lot of conversation was around

(42:48):
arch manning in the offense. But as we've talked about,
I know Mark fields the same way. This defense is
legit a lot of studs, and one of the players
was looking to take the next step in his progression,
standout linebacker Anthony Hill Junior. Here's the sound from defensive
corner of Pete Kokowski on what's next for Anthony Hill.

Speaker 7 (43:09):
The next step for him is is really just keep
growing and improving in this in this past.

Speaker 3 (43:15):
Coverage, whether it's man coverage or zone coverage, he has
a nose for the ball, you know, plays it, plays
his tail.

Speaker 9 (43:24):
Off and and has a knock for big plays. And
it's just the consistency in his.

Speaker 1 (43:31):
In his past coverage is is uh the next step
and he's he's going to get about town.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
I had a guy tell me that Anthony Hill talks
when he when he rushes, when he when he's going
in and he's saying stuff, and and one is that okay,
okay okay. And the closer he gets to you, the
more you can hear him. You know how bad that
would unnerve you. If you was a quarterback and you're
dropping back and you see the guy in the flask

(44:00):
and you hear okay, okay, okay, okay, man, it.

Speaker 8 (44:04):
Would make me want to get rid of the ball sooner.
It could be worse. He could sound like Alvin Hill
in the program.

Speaker 3 (44:10):
Oh my gosh, come on, Marcus, come on. Mark. The
thing you know, one of the things I should say
about Anthony that's so unique is he is such a
mild manner dude. He is a nice, gregarious like the
dude talked about SpongeBob being his favorite cartoon last year,
and he does the dance and did the dance right,
And then you juxtapose that with a guy who when

(44:32):
he's on the field, all business all the time to
PK sound and talking about the next step for him.
I do agree the right step the NFL. Well, the
next step is the NFL. But Mark and I don't.
I'm not trying to take a shot at another player
because Texas is the program I cover, so obviously these
are the players I'm closest too, Right, But I saw
rankings that Georgia CJ. Allen stand out inside linebacker six

(44:54):
one two thirty five hell of a player in their defense,
is rated as the number one pure linebacking draft prospect
from twenty twenty six. And I don't no disrespect to
c J. Allen, but I'm like, did we forget about
Anthony Hill Junior? Right? Like, Mark, I'll get you on this.

Speaker 2 (45:12):
That's the SEC bias, and Texas is gonna still have
that until they win a national championship. Sure, Like there's
a lot that you can't expect these people to change
their mind. They already said, oh Texas had an easy
schedule last year for garbage, you play who you was

(45:33):
on your schedule. They have a schedule this year that
they said, oh now, this is a tough schedule. This
is when Texas goes wins eleven games or more, which
they can.

Speaker 3 (45:43):
I think I don't agree with coach Sark when you
when he said that he don't think that anybody at
this current climate will have an undefeated season. I don't
agree with him.

Speaker 2 (45:54):
I think Texas will okay and can is up to them.
I I really do feel like that Texas is going
to be able to do that, and if you just
have to let your guys be who they are. Anthony
Hill said it best. I'm him.

Speaker 3 (46:16):
He believes that there's nobody that can stop him.

Speaker 2 (46:21):
So who are we to disagree with him until it happens.

Speaker 3 (46:26):
The thing for me, when I saw that that ranking
is granted a Hill, maybe if you're viewing him more
in that Micah Parsons role, right, that's not necessarily a
traditional linebacker. He's a do it all time. That's the
only caveat I'll give because, and again I understand I'm biased.
I cover Texas, but Anthony Hill to PK's point, The

(46:47):
only knock on his game right now is that maybe
he's not someone that you know, you would say, all right,
he's gonna be his it's a strength for him in coverage,
right But he's grown every step of the way, every
challenge that PK's he's grown, and he has the athleticism
to cover in space. It's just and Mark, I'll give
you on this. You know, yes, you want to be

(47:08):
well rounded, and I do think it's it's great for
him to be well rounded. But we all know his
strengths are rushing the quarterback and making plays with the
line of scrimmage. But the only knock you can sell
his game right now is that maybe he's not the
best in coverage.

Speaker 2 (47:19):
Markt Man, you're you're you're doing your team of disservice.
If you don't tell them something deficient, Sure you're.

Speaker 4 (47:27):
Doing them a disservice.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
But as a coach, I'm gonna put you in position
for your success and for our team's success. And that
is I'm not gonna make you cover. That's what Michael
taff is for. Like I want you to get in
people's neck, go get him, and that's that's what you

(47:51):
that's your role.

Speaker 8 (47:52):
And that's what you and also that's what you that's
what off seasons about is working on your weaknesses. And
that's right to the truth to what you said is
it's teammates and your coaches tell you what your your
weaknesses is. So once you know what your weakness is,
you can make those strengths and that's how you make
your game better.

Speaker 3 (48:08):
And I'll just do a cheap plug here. I just
wrote a column this morning for downs. Column is out
and one of the one of the downs, actually my
last down is putting some respect on Anthony Hill's name. Again,
I'm not shading CJ. Allen. You expect whoever it is
to think they're the best, right, So I'm not shaving
c Jala when I say this, But we ask c J.
Allen at media days like, oh, we're the ones that's

(48:29):
talking about it, right, right.

Speaker 2 (48:31):
So like for a sports writer in Georgia or a
national sports writer to say that is him negating Texas.

Speaker 4 (48:41):
Sure, sure, and we just Texas.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
I say week, Texas suffers a lot of hate and
until they win a national championship, they're gonna keep getting
the hate.

Speaker 3 (48:51):
Go win, and the people got shut.

Speaker 8 (48:53):
Up and Eric if you're gonna do a cheap plug,
go all in, just tell me more to find it.

Speaker 3 (48:58):
You can find that column at twenty four to seven
dot com. But yeah, Anthony Hill respects CJ Allen's game.
Definitely think CJ respects Anthony Hill. It was notable to
me that when Anthony we asked Anthony, hey, who are
some guys around the league you you watch? He mentioned
CJ Allen. When we asked CJ Allen, c J Allen said,
I think I'm the best. Right again, that's not knocking
CJ because you expect him to think he's the greatest,

(49:19):
but it's just something that's interesting. Hopefully the respect will
be put. It should have been mutual. He should have
been a side man. The Hill is pretty damn good.
We'll say he didn't. So that's more gasoline. Put it
on the chalkboard. It'll be settled on the field this
year when Texas and Georgia square off. It is the
Morning Kickoff AM thirteen hundred, The Zone, The Henryman in

(49:42):
the building. We'll be back in a moment. It is
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Morning Kickoff. World
Strongest Man Mark Henry, Eric Henry that's right of Horns
twenty four seven, twenty four seven Sports Pinchhitting for Hardball,
Harge on a well deserved vacanc Henry of Henry and

(50:03):
Henry and real Quick. If you happen to miss an
episode of The Morning Kickoff, you're in luck because you
can listen to the Morning Kickoff podcast available on the
free iHeartRadio app or free ever free is the keyword,
or wherever you listen to podcasts. This is a topic
we did not get a chance to get into yesterday,

(50:26):
but we're gonna dive into it today. A little bit
of NFL news, of course, training camps opening up all
across America, all across the NFL. And one of the
surprise moves. You know, usually you see surprise moves at
the end of camp, right a guy who gets beat
out by a rookie or a high priced guy they
want to move on from. Usually don't see m at
the beginning of camp. But you saw the Las Vegas

(50:49):
Raiders almost call them the Oakland Raiders. The Las Vegas
Raiders release defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, someone who came in
on a big money deal and it didn't necessarily appear
performance related Mark. But what a toss of Some sounders
from the Pat McAfee show pleaves with Adam Schefter where
they get into some of the rumors. I guess. I

(51:11):
guess Adam is reporting this speculation about what happened with
Christian Wilkins in Vegas and what led to his release.
Here's the sound what the hell happened with Wilkins in
Las Vegas?

Speaker 5 (51:21):
When we speak to people there inside of the locker room,
they say that Christian blayfully went to kiss a teammate
on top of his head, And those same people said
that that player took offense to it, so.

Speaker 10 (51:32):
He kissed the teammate on a forehead in a playful manner.

Speaker 3 (51:35):
Teammates said, Nope, not.

Speaker 10 (51:36):
Doing that, and what the H and R and reported
this attire things what happened?

Speaker 5 (51:41):
I think that a fair and accurate way of saying things.

Speaker 3 (51:43):
Yeah, if that.

Speaker 10 (51:44):
Happens in the locker room and then they go and
report it, that mean's locker room probably in them.

Speaker 4 (51:47):
This would quattify as weird.

Speaker 10 (51:49):
But if they want a ugre game with the guy
though they're playing bou Ray and the guy all the
party said that dude kissed.

Speaker 3 (51:55):
Him on a four.

Speaker 10 (51:57):
I've never seen it either. If I'm just saying like, hey,
Scot forty grand to me, thank dude, you know he
help me, give you up good luck.

Speaker 3 (52:04):
To kiss the top of a ball head.

Speaker 7 (52:06):
If he's a one hundred million dollar player, I'm assuming
it was like Max Crossby. He's not kissing some practice
squad player and then getting in that much trouble for guys.

Speaker 2 (52:15):
I'm just gonna let this be known. That was very
good investigative reporting on the half of Shuffler. All the
rest of those defensive linemen and linebackers have hair. It's
only one guy on that defensive line that's balled, only one,
and his name is Max Crosby. And Max Crosby is

(52:37):
a big, mean, scary dude. The last thing you want
to do is go kiss that dude on the head.
You know, he took offense to it, and you know
him being the hunt, like they said, one hundred million
dollar guy. Hey, it's either me or him, Yeah, and
let's go beat him.

Speaker 4 (52:55):
Hey. I got sent to Canada for threatening Sean Michaels
and it.

Speaker 3 (53:01):
Was kind of that was that was based on what
I know of that rip that was deserved.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
Well, no, but but the thing is, guys, I hate
to tell y'all this, but Sean Michaels didn't have my crutches.

Speaker 4 (53:12):
It was Paul Barr Hm.

Speaker 2 (53:15):
So I got angry and threatening to kill everybody because
I thought Sean did it.

Speaker 4 (53:21):
Because he's the one that came and was inciting the riot.

Speaker 8 (53:25):
Oh yeah, okay, Paul, that's a good Paul Bear.

Speaker 3 (53:32):
But but that's that's the thing.

Speaker 2 (53:34):
Like Christian Wilkins has a history of doing some suss
and my daughter says, suss doing.

Speaker 4 (53:43):
Some suss things.

Speaker 2 (53:44):
That's a young If you go on yes I'm learning,
I'm learning the lingo, you go online and you look
up Christian Wilkinson, you'll see that he's got videos out
there of him underneath the pile grabbing parts that don't
belong to him. I mean, did it in a national

(54:06):
championship game. I mean, there's there's several things like that.
That's kind of says.

Speaker 4 (54:13):
Maybe mac Crosby new Mark.

Speaker 3 (54:17):
And forgive me for looking down at my phone, cause
I wanted to make sure I verify this detail for
I said it on air. Two things come to mind,
and again maybe this is just reporter brain one to
piggyback if we talke about the last name about ribs,
if that indeed was a rib, that was a costly rib,
not just forty million Mark Christian Wilkins deal. I'm reading

(54:38):
it from ESPN last offseason, Wilkins signed a four year,
one hundred and ten million dollar deal, including eighty four
and a half million dollars guarantees. So did he avoid
the contract? So as of now, that's guaranteed money. But
you have to assume the players Association, the Las Vegas
were there. There's gonna be some back and forth as

(55:01):
far as what we are entitled to pay him. That's
a costly rib. I almost almost said costly a rib
Like that's that's a call. Mark, Sometimes you need to
listen to Hank Hill dirty Pool, mister dirty Pool. So
there's step one. But something that Again, this is just

(55:21):
reporter brain. This is a quote from defensive tackle fellow
defensive tackle Adam Butler, and I'm not trying to add
seriousness to it, but it just makes me think, is
there something we're not missing? Mark, here's the quote. The
team has moved on from the situation. But he also added,
whatever you're going through as a person as an athlete,
non athlete or whoever, whatever your struggle is. If you've
got something going on in your life, just talk to somebody.

(55:43):
Get therapy. Someone out there in this world will hear
you out. That sounds like he's not well.

Speaker 2 (55:50):
It sounds like, man, we don't mess with him, we
didn't like him anyway. That sounds like good ridds, glad
that he's gonna be somebody else's problem.

Speaker 4 (56:02):
That's not good, guys, it's not good.

Speaker 3 (56:04):
When I heard that quote, Like you Mark, I listen,
you know some of we've seen the social media eclips
of him doing the split and some of the other things.
I just I'll twork and how you.

Speaker 2 (56:16):
Gonna be three hundred and ten pounds doing splits and
twerking and stuff.

Speaker 3 (56:21):
I'm just saying, you know, I'm not no judgment.

Speaker 8 (56:23):
Okay, ye if you go be that way, just be
out in front with it and don't be trying to
hide it.

Speaker 3 (56:29):
But to the quote, right.

Speaker 2 (56:31):
Grabbing people jump, I mean you can go. I'd rather
you go dance and twerk than to be grabbing the
other guys.

Speaker 8 (56:37):
That's see. That's when kissing people on the forehead that
that's all about it. It's all about do they do
they want it? If they don't want it, you can't
be doing that stuff.

Speaker 3 (56:46):
Man, Man to to the to the quote and to
your point, Marcus, we're in a time and like this
is not you know it's not. It's a different time,
right hr and all the sensitivities can't just do things
that will willy nilly. And to that quote, it does
make me wonder is there something deeper? Because these guys
in the locker room with him, right Mark, like they're

(57:07):
around him every day, we're not. Is there something deeper
that they saw that for him to say if you
need help, get it, that to me was the part
that took me back and said, Okay, maybe there's something deeper.
And I don't want to speculate, but maybe there's something
that Christian Wilkins, I don't say it needs help, but.

Speaker 4 (57:26):
Can I tell you? Can I tell you something? Absolutely, Mark,
it's going.

Speaker 2 (57:30):
To come out and it's not gonna take a long
time because right now every reporter in Las Vegas and
every reporter where he's going is gonna be So why
did you want him gone? Why didn't he get a
second chance? Like, hey man, I'm sorry, I apologize. It'll
never happen again. That means that he might have been

(57:53):
on number three. Mark, We just not We just don't know.
Eighty four million dollars of that contract was guaranteed. That's
crazy for Vegas.

Speaker 3 (58:03):
And again, I I'm kind of fighting two battles here
because we're talking about the situation, but I'm also coming
from our reporter brain. If you told me someone who
was guaranteed eighty four million dollars and they're one year
into the deal and they get cut, Like to your point, Mark,
it couldn't have been strike one.

Speaker 4 (58:19):
That's not strike one.

Speaker 3 (58:20):
It couldn't have been strike one. And I just want
to verify again, we're talking about a guy twenty nine
years old, still in the prime of his career, was
a first round pick thirteenth overall pick by Miami in
twenty nineteen, signs the five year contract, works to get
that second deal. Mark, that's the deal. Even in your profession,
you get that first contract or your form profession, then

(58:41):
you get that second contract. That second contract is what
you work towards. Yeah, I want to ask Miami what
did they see? It's right because they chose not to pay,
you know, they chose not to pay him. And bring
him back. So it's it's super interesting there and super quick.
Just want to transition. We talked Cowboys earlier in the week,

(59:02):
the Houston Texans as well doing their thing.

Speaker 2 (59:04):
Mark, I just talk about Texans and not talk about
the Cowboys because it's just, you know, it's very depressing
right now.

Speaker 3 (59:11):
The first week is been depressed. I'll say this. You know,
I look at that AFC South Jacksonville not going to
be a player, Indy Anthony Richardson, poor A d Mitchell.
He's still trying to catch passes that are five feet
over his head. Mark, Houston, this should be their division
to win, right, it should be.

Speaker 2 (59:28):
And the biggest thing about it is they have a
running back that's out where they're giving another running back
all the reps.

Speaker 4 (59:38):
So I think the same thing with the Chargers.

Speaker 2 (59:41):
Yeah, they're in a spot where that you know, one
running back is out and the young guy gets an
opportunity to show out. I'm looking forward to seeing what
Chubb is going to do and Pearce is going to
do in Houston, and how you got.

Speaker 3 (59:55):
A couple of violent runners in Houston. That's going to
be interesting is show with a Reva running offensive line yes,
and in my opinion, one of the most underrated head
coaches in the nation. In the nation, I'm to college
football in the NFL and tomko Ryan, so keep an
eye out for the Texans. We certainly will talk Texans
and of course the Cowboys throughout. Oh, we know what

(01:00:19):
time it is? Mark? Okay, I just ask, we know
what Tom it is coming up for the World's Strongest Take.
In our next segment, Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The
Zone will be back in a moment Morning Kickoff. It
is the morning kickoff here on Sports Radio A M
thirteen hundred The Zone. Eric Henry Pinch hitting for Mike

(01:00:39):
Hardball hars World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry alongside Mark.

Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
Eric.

Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
Yes, sir, you know what time it is? Can you
tell me what time it is?

Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
Mark?

Speaker 3 (01:00:54):
It's time for the world's Strongest take by the world
strongest man. My guess back then, they didn't know me.
Like the song says, now I'm hot, they all on me.

Speaker 2 (01:01:11):
This segment should not be called the World's Strongest Take today.
It should be answer to the critic. Because I had
a friend of mine that listens to the show. Come
at me yesterday, Man, you gave Luca too much love?

(01:01:32):
Why would you do that?

Speaker 3 (01:01:34):
You?

Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
I mean, I know you're a Laker fan and everything,
but wow, you was on his jock.

Speaker 3 (01:01:41):
That's what on his job mean?

Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
That's strong? Mean you don't tell another man that. Well,
I'm gonna tell you something. Don I love you like
a play cousin. Oh yeah, I put your name in
the street player. I love you like a play cousin.
But it's my job to tell it like it is

(01:02:05):
with facts. Now, I have my opinions, and I'll say, hey, look,
this is just my opinion on the matter.

Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
This is a speculation, this is a thought.

Speaker 2 (01:02:18):
No, yesterday I gave facts, and if you don't believe me,
buy Men's Health magazine and you read the article. I
was just trying to save you some money. But also
I was impressed as a guy that's made his living
off the world of physical culture, listening to the trainer

(01:02:41):
talk about what exercises that he's doing that are specific
to basketball. This is what I talked about. Am I wrong?
Can I get an amen? Can I get a witness
from somebody? That is what I did, And I'm not
making any apologies for what I said.

Speaker 4 (01:03:02):
Luka Dnich has the potential.

Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
See I'm gonna tell you why this guy has a
son named Jordan after Michael Jeffrey Jordan. He is such
a Michael Jordan fan that when I mentioned that Luca
has the potential to do a Kobe Bryant, to do

(01:03:27):
a Lebron James, to do a Michael Jordan type, oh,
that was a sacrilege. Guys, Please, please, pretty please don't
put Michael Jordan on such a pedestal that he can't
be a standard for other athletes to judge themselves by

(01:03:49):
that play in the sport that he played.

Speaker 3 (01:03:52):
That's what records are for.

Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
If I'm not mistaken, you have to be able to
look at something and say, oh, I want to be
better than that, and maybe one day I will be.

Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
If I don't, oh well I tried.

Speaker 3 (01:04:11):
I do not feel like I gave looka too much respect.
I do not feel like I gave him too much praise.

Speaker 2 (01:04:22):
I love the fact that the guy has lost thirty pounds,
and I challenge you, every last one of y'all listening
to my voice, I lost seventy five pounds, and altogether
since I started, I'm.

Speaker 4 (01:04:34):
One hundred and six pounds down.

Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
I know how hard it is. I challenge you to
go do it. Go lose thirty pounds in a month
and a half.

Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
Go do it.

Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
That's what he did. And yes he's finally training. But
we can't get on him for just now arriving to
the party. We got to be happy that he showed up, Eric,
What say you, Mark?

Speaker 3 (01:05:04):
Listen, I don't want to disrespect your friend, So I
go ahead.

Speaker 2 (01:05:08):
You got permission. I'm not gonna be mad at you
right now. Mark, you talk about him tomorrow and we're
gonna have problem.

Speaker 3 (01:05:14):
Okay, Well, in this segment, what type of new food
looks at twenty eight points six points per game? This
is over his career now. By the way, now I
just talked about last year twenty eight, eight and eight,
there's somebod a guy who's twenty five years.

Speaker 2 (01:05:30):
Old, who never lifted weights, who was thirty pounds overweight,
who is.

Speaker 3 (01:05:37):
Just now learning. As you talked about how to be
a professional, how to take care of his body, how
to be a professional, how to lift weights, how to eat.
We talked about this a little bit, uh with your
with the big guy in Florida. Right, Oh, well, yeah,
I'll use that as an example. Bring him I'll use
as an example Desmond Watson, a kid from my neck
of the woods, you know, went to Armwood High School, Tampa, Florida,
someone who they look at his four fifties to wait

(01:06:00):
right now, I think that's a problem. I'm telling this
kid was north of five hundred pounds in high school. Right.
But it's eating habits and he comes from a background
where you don't really know how to be.

Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
Then you say that he would have a pack of
crackers and a thing of velvet.

Speaker 3 (01:06:15):
Like like a thing of elvita, you know as a kid
as a diet for dinner. Right, Like you have to
learn how to be market to, how to learn how
to be a professional, right, no matter what sport it is.
But look at Luka Dancic. We talked about it the
past few days. In Europe. You become a pro fifteen
sixteen years old. The culture there is you eat right,

(01:06:39):
you you can drink at a younger age there, right,
Like it's just hey, we just get up. I have
a little glass of wide go. That's it. A gallon?

Speaker 2 (01:06:48):
Tell I'm ashamed of it. My freshman year here in Austin,
I got introduced.

Speaker 4 (01:06:54):
To jungle juice.

Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
Remember jungle juice. I do not.

Speaker 4 (01:06:58):
Where I'm from, we didn't have that.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
So I would go to the convenience store and they
would have this stuff called jungle juice, and it was
just processed sugar with color in it.

Speaker 4 (01:07:08):
It was sugar water.

Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
Oh okay.

Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
I bought a gallon probably like a week in a
like every every day for like a week, I drink
that stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:07:19):
And then it became a habit of me consuming that
much sugar.

Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
That's what his life is like, right, and Luca to
be able to say, I recognize it no more. I'm training,
I'm eating healthy. I want to be the best I
can be. If his average on the negative side is
twenty eight points and eight and eight, he might be
thirty five now and ten and ten. That's the value

(01:07:49):
that I see behind it. But I'm just saying I'm not.
I don't feel like I'm the bad guy.

Speaker 3 (01:07:53):
Okay, I'm a help done.

Speaker 4 (01:07:54):
I make him feel a lot better with this.

Speaker 8 (01:07:57):
Hell since he's a Spur fan, correct, Victor women Yanna
has put on twenty to thirty pounds doing this offseason,
So we can you wanted some positive, some stuff to
sway your way, So we give you a little positive
information for your spurs.

Speaker 3 (01:08:14):
There you go, There you go. Now you can be
happy today, can be happy. And I won't even be
Debbie Downer because I want to get on. Victor. Stop
doing them bicycle kicks and all that stuff. You're gonna
mess up your money. Man, Like did you see the
video Marker do it bicycle kicks. Don't do that, Victor.
Just stay healthy.

Speaker 4 (01:08:32):
Basketball. We just played basketball.

Speaker 3 (01:08:34):
But that was the world's strongest take from the world's
strongest man, Mark Henry. We'll be back sports without you,
Marks jetting out to the airport, I believe.

Speaker 4 (01:08:43):
Yeah, man, I gotta go to Summer Slam.

Speaker 2 (01:08:45):
Guys, I really appreciate everybody. I hate to have to
leave before the show is over, but I gotta go.

Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
Gotta go, But we'll be back AM thirteen hundred Morning
Kickoff Sports Radio Amen hundred The Zone Morning Kickoff. A
little bummed out that Mark is gonna miss out on
our favorite segment of the show when we hear this song,
because again, if you hear this song, you have to
be in a great move. Oh yeah, no doubt about it.

(01:09:18):
Morning Kickoff. Eric Henry of two four seven Sports pinch
hitting for hard Ball, Hard Mark Henry had to dip out.
The man has obligations, got to get the Summer Slam
in New Jersey. It's no Summer Slam about the world's
strongest man. So gonna let him jet and I will
take the final segment solo. Got Marcus behind the scenes
handling the ones in twos, and I just wanted to

(01:09:41):
dive into this real quick again. You know, we've talked
about the sound and a lot of the conversation from
the Texas Football coaching staff, the coordinators, assistant coaches. But
this is a hill that I will die on, and
I think it's one that quite frankly, again, we've talked
about respect, Anthony Hill getting his respect, Texas Football getting

(01:10:02):
his respect. I really hope that Steve Sarkisian gets his
respect as well. You know, one of the things I'm
a big believer in is development. And we talk a lot,
for some reason, almost exclusively about development when it comes
to players. Right, We like to think about is this
quarterback going to develop? Is this running back going to develop?
But for some reason, and Marcus, I'd love to grab,

(01:10:24):
you know, a thought from you on this before we
get out of here, is for some reason we don't
extend that leeway to coaches. And I don't know if
that's because, to quote Steve Sarkisian, right, that's why they
called me coach because I've got the answers right. Maybe
because we think coaches always have the answers to everything,
we don't give them room to develop. But Marcus, Steve

(01:10:45):
Sarkisian is is you know, I'm forgetting how old? I
think Steve's fifty one if memory starts me correct, this
is his eleventh full season as a head coach. Yes,
we all knew that guy had the football IQ right,
former quarterback stand out of BYU, this off into guru,
but now entering his fifty year at Texas. Of course

(01:11:05):
he had this stint at Washington. We know what happened
to that, see, But he's growing as a coach. I'm
talking about not just as a recruiter, as a developer
of talent, but on game days, Marcus, like, why don't
we give coaches that same leeway to develop their skills
as well?

Speaker 8 (01:11:20):
When it comes to sark I think it's maybe it's
because he's been coaching for so long over time, he's
still still a young young man in night in his
early fifties, but he's still Honestly, I think when it
comes to an side of the ball coach, he was
an offense. He was an offensive side of the ball
guy quarterback. As he as his career developed, you get

(01:11:43):
better offensively as an offensive mind.

Speaker 3 (01:11:45):
Then you as a head coach, then.

Speaker 8 (01:11:47):
You start focusing on defense, and your defense starts to improve.
You start to learn how to call, how to how
to manage your defense. You know your team defensively, so
as a coach, I think as always room for development,
and but experience always bring more development.

Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
I'm glad you made that point because again it kind
of plays into what I'm talking about in terms of,
you know, like you said, he was a one side
of the ball guy. And of course, you know, listen,
unless you're a special teams coach right where you kind
of have, you know, you're bringing guys from offense to
come play special teams and bringing guys from defense to
come play special teams. Most coaches tend to be, you know,
one side of the ball coaches, although sometimes you'll see coaches,

(01:12:22):
you know, be a running backs coach and then flip
over to be a linebackers coach or whatnot. But Steve Sarkisen,
of course, being an offensive guy throughout the entirety of
his career has been one side of the ball. You know, again,
in today's college football guys, you know today's football in general,
what especially college football, it's all about delegating, trusting in
your staff. I think that's another thing, And I would
love to ask Steve this question. I've had the time,

(01:12:44):
so much of my time talking to him, is you know,
dedicated to this Texas football team? But I would love
to ask him Marcus, like, Hey, when did you feel
comfortable saying, all right, I've got good coordinators. I've got
Kyle Flood, I've got Pete Kukowski, I've got Jeff Banks.
I don't have to have my hand in every single
facet of the game plan because I know those guys
can handle their job right. And that's going to allow

(01:13:06):
me to put my focus on being the CEO of
this football team. And then also on game days, I
don't need to be worried about, Hey, what defensive play
call is going to be called? Or you know what
each side of the ball is doing, right, I can
hone it on being a play caller. And again, I
think that comes with maturity and experiencing time and growth
as a coach.

Speaker 8 (01:13:23):
But ironically going back off of that, when you like
when you're young as a head coach and you, like
I say, one side of the ball coach, you're primarily
focusing on that, and once you get experience, you're delegating,
which you delegate more of the offensive side. Why you
learn how to be able to manage the defensive side.
So it's like it's like you let you you just

(01:13:44):
diverting your attention in a way, but you also trusting
guys like a young offensive minded coach definitely need an
experienced defensive minded coach and as a time whereon you
can delegate and learn more about the opposite side of
the ball.

Speaker 3 (01:14:02):
You nailed it, and you may be, you know, listening
at home wondering, you know where am I going with this?
This is where I want to land the plane. Yes,
quarterback is the most important position quite frankly in sports,
but definitely in football in the field right and arch
Manning's development will be key this defense. We all believe
it as an opportunity to be arguably top one, two,

(01:14:24):
three in the nation. But I think another factor that
can help Texas football get over the hump and bring
the national title back to Austin for the first time
to two thousand and five, is Steve Sarkejian coming into
his own as a head coach? If he hits his
ceiling and we all know he's still growing, still learning,
and Steve will be pretty candid in talking about it,

(01:14:45):
but he excuse me him coming into his own this
year with how we started the show, all of his pieces,
all of his players, I think that is a very
underrated factor. And quite frankly, it's a factor that I'm
probably gonna be diving into and hoping to report all
season long. Is Steve Sarkisian entering his prime as a

(01:15:09):
head coach? Because when you take a look at the
coaches who won national titles for the most part, whether
it's a Dabbo Sweeney, a Nick Sabin, even a Ryan Day,
you know, Ryan Dad hasn't be able to conquer that
that Michigan hump. That's certainly something that the folks in
Columbus care about. But he's won a national title. All
of those coaches were pretty much at their apex, right.

(01:15:30):
Pete Carroll, one of Steve Sarkasan's mentors, right. He had
to go through struggles with the Jets, struggles you know,
early in his career with New England before he hit
his stride with USC. And I'm a firm believer, Marcus,
that we are getting ready to see that with Texas
football with Steve Sarkisian, not just this year, but years

(01:15:51):
to come. I mean, what a hire by Chrys del Conte.
And we all know it wasn't necessarily the most popular
hire at the time. I'm sure it certainly I wasn't
here at the time in Austin. I'm sure wasn't the
most popular higher after five and seven. But guess what
five and seven, folks, it is long gone in the
rear view. The Texas Longhorns are indeed back and ready

(01:16:13):
to be a player in the college football space. And
we will hear from the head coach of the Texas Longhorn,
Steve Sarkisian, today after the Longhorns take the field for
the first time this fall fall campus opening. But we
are closing. It's been so excited. Football is coming back.

Speaker 8 (01:16:32):
It is It's going to be crazy, high school, pro, NFL,
college is crazy.

Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
It's going to be awesome. All is well, All is right,
when football is back. But that brings us to the
