So why don't you enjoy us and share with your
friends because it is important to do so.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Mark. It's a big week for the Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
And not only is it a big week for the matchup,
being back at DKR everything that goes along with that,
but it also is a big week because of the narrative.
You know, we were talking before the show and talking
about this Texas football team and you hear all the
whispers about it. We've talked about coach and people thinking
(03:01):
of him going to the NFL and how he was
animate about that's not true, that's not true.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
But you still have a game that needs to be played.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
And not only do you have a game that needs
to be played, your quarterback is in protocol, your starting
quarterback who's played outstanding by the way. I think he's
turned the corner, and we've talked about that weekend and
week out.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
He keeps getting better and better.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
The more he plays, the more reps he gets, more
comfortable he gets and understanding who he has around him.
But this week is a big week because there's a
kid that is coming in town that has a boulder
on his shoulder and his name is Diego Pavia. He's
a quarterback that is in Heisman conversation. I don't know how,
(03:45):
but he's in it. And all you can ask is
to be in it and you keep getting better every week.
And he's a guy that looks at this Texas game
as possibly like a super Bowl because he is. He's
one of those dudes that we were talking talk about
no quit in the Blue Jacks.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
There's no quit in this kid. I mean, he's a
he's a wrestler.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
He grew up as a wrestler, and he's continued to
use his his inadequacies as a motivator. He's been able
to create this narrative around him and belief in his
football team.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Well, I mean, you want to be around guys like him.
You always got to have at least one of those
guys on your team, a guy that's the energize of Bunny,
the guy that has no quit, the guy that's gonna
push everybody. And it's like that that that movie Rudy,
that line in Rudy where the coach where the guy
complained about, man, you act like every player is a
(04:43):
super Bowl and the coach said, no, you're exactly right.
That's why you're on the third team. Now like that,
that's who he is. He just he don't have a
he don't have a governor. The guy is trying to
burn that engine up. He's one hundred miles and running
and this is gonna have.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
To count for him.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
He likes to run the ball, So let's we got
to hit him early and we got to hit him.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Off, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
And so Sark was talking about what the challenges are
for prepping for a quarterback like Diego Pavia.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Well, I think there's layers to what you have to
prepare for him. Is one, the pass game, you know,
and his ability to find the big receiver, his ability
to find the tight end, and they're very creative in
getting him the ball. I think two, the triple option
aspect of their offense and him making those decisions in
the option game. Three is the direct quarterback run game
(05:39):
that they use and the quarterback powers and things. And
then four the ad lib plays that that he makes.
He's very good at ad lib plays the first touchdown
last year against US was an ad lib play with
the sprint out that he ends up you know, ends
up scoring on. So you have to you have to
defend him kind of in layers, and you've got to
be very detailed. You got to have great eye discipline
(06:00):
against this group and against him, and you got to
make sure you do a great job set in your
edges or he can get on the perimeter on you quick.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
He's a tough dude. Yeah, and he's their leading rusher.
We talked a little bit about this yesterday. He's their
leading rusher and he's their leading passer.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Every time they run that triple option, every time they
run an option type play. He needs to get hitting
him out absolutely, And because he's a runner, not a
quarterback at that point, yep. So like that, that's an
easy schematical thing that you can say, Hey, guys, like
when we see the I don't care you hit him
anyway because he's a runner and you're not gonna get
(06:40):
a penalty for hitting the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
And he's a hot head, so he might punch you
in the face. Man, That's what I'm saying. You can
disrupt him because he is a hot head. So there's
a lot that he brings to the table. But the
one thing about him is if you can get him
to play out of character, it creates a different conversation
for him and the way that he goes about it
(07:04):
it will change too. But one thing started talked about
as well is the emotional shift of being back home
after being on the road being booed. Obviously, Texas travels well,
but he expects a lot of folks to be at
dk R, even at the eleven thirty start.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I think there's a fine line, you know, and games
like this. I listen to other coaches talk a lot
of the time about relying on the fans to provide
the energy into the stadium. And I know Longhorn Nation
is going to show up Saturday at eleven am, and
but we need to make sure we provide energy for
them too. And and part of that is our is
our style of play, the help the speed in which
(07:43):
we play with, the violence in which we play the
game with you know, that keeps the crowd energized.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
And so it's a two way street there.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
And so we can't just go into this thinking, hey,
we're at home and now we got our fans and
everything's going to be great. No, they're just a they're
an added bonus. We still need to play, you know,
our brand, our football against a very good football team.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
And it is going to be loud.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
And I said eleven thirty, I mean that that's probably
when I will get started. But we actually will be
started at eight a m. Right outside hook them hang out.
So make sure you make your plans to get down
to the to the stadium early. I know it's trick
or treat day and y'all know how to act the fool,
but hey, be good because there's a lot that's going
to be going on early, or just rolling from Sixth
(08:26):
Street and just stay over there until until the game,
until power on field sixth Street exactly and then roll
back in.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Speaking of being older and mature, Uh.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
That's what Vandy is, and that is why Vandy has
been able to play the way that they have because
this is an older football team. It almost reminds me
of b YU because of the advantages of building that
being around and being in that culture for quite some time.
So what does that mean for having an older team.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
It's probably somewhat at an advantage regardless of the system.
You know, veteran players, guys who have you know, have
seen more things in game, able to make maybe quicker
adjustments in game. Are some advantages to that older, stronger,
you know, things like that. You know, it's such a
fine line. We want to recruit high school really, really well.
(09:22):
And you know, for as long as I can remember,
you know, of being at Alabama or being on some
of the best teams, when when you recruit really well
and players perform well, a lot of them leave early
to go to the draft. When you recruit well and
maybe players aren't playing quite as much as they would like,
they want an opportunity to play, they leave too. Guys transfer,
(09:44):
and then you try to recruit really good high school kids,
and so you you know, one of the drawbacks of
that is, yeah, we're one of the younger teams in
the country, and so there's always that fine line of okay,
do you take more transfers. You know, there was a
reason we took so many, you know, in interior defensive
lineman transfers, and we tried to get older there a
little quicker, and so I guess it's kind of on
(10:08):
a yearly basis of where you're at as a team
and what type of leadership you have and where's your maturity.
But I don't know if will Effort be one of
the older teams in the country. You know, I think
we'll probably if we can continue to do what we've
been doing, we'll always be on the younger side. But
I think, you know, it's always nice to get older
at key spots when when you can through the portal.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
That sounds good to me.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, I mean I wanted to be diverse, like not
just on the defensive line, but like on the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, you know, like even at tight end.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
You know, they went out and got injuries, they recruited
some really good freshmen tight ends like you know, have
a happy balance, you know, Like that's.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Why that's why he said, I don't believe we're going
to ever be one of the older teams because of
how they have gone about their business.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
They want to have because.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Texas is getting high end freshmen, you're not getting Josh.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, they building to that.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
So we'll continue those conversations and so much more coming
up at seven thirty four. We'll have our guy, Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman get his thoughts of
what the trip to Mississippi State was and finally being
at home to sleep in his bed on the weekend.
And of course we'll hear more from the Texas players
(11:32):
coming up next as they talk about the team on
the road, what type of team they are, and going
back on the transfer portal. Let's see what this Texas
culture is all about right here on the Morning Kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Before we get into the Texas
(11:55):
football team, I wanted to give an update on one
of the great Longhorn fan, Scott Wilson, who never ever
ever would miss a game, and he had a streak
that will probably like cal Ripken to the games in
which he was traveling too, whether it was at home
(12:16):
or away. If you remember, he suffered a heart attack
when he was going to Florida for that game there
and they gave an update. His sister gave an update.
Scott Wilson has been moved to hospice within the UF
Health Hospital. He's been spiraling down over the last two
(12:39):
weeks and his condition is such that he would never
get out to see another game at the University of Texas.
So they asked to raise a beer this weekend at
your tailgate and understand and lift him up in his
family in prayer. So, Scott Wilson one of the true
(13:00):
legends of the Texas Longhorns, and I reached out to
a couple of people to make sure to confirm that
it was true. And that's exactly what they said. So
prayers up for the Wilson family. If you've ever met him,
if you've ever met him, you you know that he
(13:21):
is He is a genuine, genuine guy, and so prayers
up for his family.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Definitely, we have to all get together and do that.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Like so, yeah, so Scott Wilson, prayers up for him.
I want to get into the Texas football team. And
Coach Stark talked about uh things that were going on
with this football team and what he found out about
this tough road stretch about his team.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
You know what what I found out is we are
a really close group. We're a tight knit group and
these guys, you know what I enjoy about football. This
is the ultimate team sport. And it's not just about
the Saturdays on you know, when the balls kicked off.
It's it's all the time that we spend together, and
(14:17):
it's it's all walks of life coming together, pulling for
a common goal, being committed to a common goal, picking
each other up, supporting one another.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
And this team does that.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
And you know, you look at that locker room after
the Kentucky game, and and and how that defense never
once pointed one finger at the offense and picked those
guys up that were a team to this locker room
this weekend, to the offense pointing out to the defense
getting those stops, and how critical they were. That's that's
(14:49):
what I love about this group. It's it's the connectivity
or this is the closest coaching staff that we've had.
You know, these guys are these guys are in it together.
We've got great rapport with one another. They've got great
connection of the play. The players have great connection with
one another. I feel like there's not a guy on
the team that if he had an issue wouldn't come
to me. And so I feel like my connection to
(15:09):
them is very close. And so that's the part you
love in general about coaching. But that's what we've created
with this team. And this team's had his own unique challenges.
We're not perfect, but that is definitely the part that
I do love.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
And he learned that because of what he's been able
to build culture wise. And one of the biggest things
that Coach Stark got a chance to talk about is
people were asking about the transfer portal. You heard him
talking about the older team and how you have to
get older in certain areas, but your team may not
be the oldest. But Coach Stark talked about the transfer
(15:44):
portal and how it fits with the Texas culture.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
I just think it's really hard to recreate our culture
every year when you're bringing in thirty new faces from
other schools who have learned a certain way. I can
bring in five to ten every year and I can
get them assimilated to our culture because it's so strong.
But the moment you start going higher than that, whose
culture is it?
Speaker 6 (16:09):
Right?
Speaker 4 (16:10):
Or am I getting some other schools culture is at ours?
And I think about guys like Colbervard, I think about
guys like hero Canoe, I think about em at Moseley
who now they are They're they're making our culture even
better because they've bought into it, they've grown within it,
and they realize the power of it, and so there's
(16:30):
a fine line.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Unreal.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Yeah, you know, it's hard to have somebody come in
and they they come highly regarded, they know they're good,
and they know they have the potential to play at
the next level, and you tell them, hey, we need.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
You to play a role, We need you to be.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
In a brotherhood and play for another guy and not
worry about your stats, right, because stats get you paid.
And it's it's times like the crunch time that they
had this week in Mississippi where you're down by seventeen
(17:14):
points that you your culture really shows itself. Are you
gonna start pointing the fingers? Are you gonna like, you
know what, I'm just gonna get me. And for those
guys he named you know why he named them. You
know why he named them because they didn't fold up
like a window shade, and they went out there and
(17:37):
performed and mostly of course, you know, he gets the
glamour because he caught the touchdown, But did you see
the drive in the fourth the defense in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Yeah, before it was like I'm not moving. How did
we gotta get them to become unmovable earlier?
Speaker 2 (17:59):
That's that's where Texas hasn't performed yet early consistent all
through the game. This is what we're gonna be. They
play like in spurts here and there. So I still
have hope that uh, these next four or five games,
that they'll get it together and finally jail and then
(18:20):
you see a team that looks like they looked in overtime,
which was unbeatable.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Well, one of those guys that have been able to
come in and assimilate to this culture at the University
of Texas is Hero Canoe. Hero Canoe has been in
key plays clearing the way for the linebackers, liking Anthony Hill,
Junior Leanngo Lafoul to be able to make those plays,
and Canoe has talked about the fact of the adversity
(18:49):
and trusting the process.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
Sometimes going to get hit with adversity and you don't
know what shape or forman it comes with. For me personally,
that it be you know, being away from home, finding
a new home. You know, maybe you had a bad game,
you had a good game, and sometimes having a good
game you can get to your head too.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
So.
Speaker 7 (19:11):
Just kind of like falling the process and not getting
ahead of yourself. For me, a lot of it helps
like being rooted in my faith. I'm a Christian safe
for Jesus. So for me, it's like always being humble
and you know, just keep following, keep following it like
if you think you're there, you're not there. If you
think you're there, you are not there yet. And that's
(19:32):
kind of like the mentality I have with that.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Love it, love it.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
The young man has been able to do the things
that he's capable of and being able to understand he's
staying within himself and as he does that, he's creating.
You know, the one thing that we always talk about
is doing your job. Do what you are being asked
to do. Don't try to do too much. And it's
going to be even more paramount this weekend because if
(19:58):
you stay disciplined and understand what your assignment is, there's
no way that this Vanderbilt team is gonna come in
here and beat you. If you do what you're supposed
to do and stay up the field, don't let him
get outside the pocket, make him have to make some
plays off schedule, which he's pretty good when he's off schedule,
(20:22):
but if you put the pressure on him, I know
he's gonna turn that ball over because when he goes
up against top ranked defenses, he has a little bit
tougher time of being able to find his spots.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
And he's been pushed a lot here the last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Well, I mean, I like the fact that he wants
to try, and I love that that that don't die,
never quit attitude. But also usually when guys have that,
they try to put too much pressure on themselves. If
you run into a disciplined defense and they don't give
(20:58):
up outside containment and they forced him to run that
thing in the middle, you're running at Anthony Hill and foul.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
Like, good luck, brother, Yeah, good luck.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
It is definitely one of those those situations to where
you look at this Texas team and you're like, all right,
if you guys hold your watery every position, don't get moved.
As you were talking about holding your ground, it's gonna
make it very uncomfortable and it could be a long,
long day for that.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Vanderbilt football team.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
By the way, Vanderbilt has a couple of players from
the Round Rock in Austin area.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
They're coming back home. We'll talk about.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
Them later in the week, but of course we'll continue
these conversations as up next, our guy, Danny Davis of
the Austin American Statesman joins us to talk about what
he heard from them cow bells, and of course what
it means this week to finally be back in Austin, Texas.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Baby, right here.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
On the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to a game plan Wednesday edition
of the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Mike Harballhard's World's Strongest Man, WWE
Hall of Famer, d Mark Henry, and of course we
got Marcus.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
But it's Wednesday, so that can only mean one thing.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman joins us to
give us his insights on the trip to Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
How was that? Danny Davis.
Speaker 8 (22:36):
Actually before not to hijack this conversation, but I did
want to say before we started talking today, obviously my
thoughts and Prairie with Scott Wilson and his family. I'm
not y'all I'm chat about that today, but we just
did with that news. That's really unfortunate. Scott's a friend,
he's a resource, He's obviously a lot of things the
(22:57):
University of Texas, and I'll definitely miss seeing him at
the dish, and I'd be remiss if I did not
say something the first chance I got, I got to
say something about Scott's so absolutely. As far as Starkville,
it was. It's a great atmosphere. The cow bells are
are We're clanging playing all night until about you know,
(23:19):
maybe a couple of minutes left in the fourth quarter
when Ryan Nibblets sprinted out the sideline and kind of
shut that place up. But it's a unique place. It's
a crazy place. They were pretty happy for much of Saturday.
But Texas found a way to win that game. I
still don't know how, but they figured it out, and
I kind of saved their season because if they lost
(23:39):
that game, I think we'd be having a much different conversation.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Today, Danny, Did you need some aspirin after that?
Speaker 2 (23:44):
After listening to all those cowbills for three and a
half quarters?
Speaker 8 (23:49):
No, Luckily, I talked to Dick Schaeffer. Earlier in the week,
I talked to a couple of Mississippi state writers. They
all advised me to bring some earplugs. So I brought
some ear plugs and had them in so really wasn't
impacting me. I did take my ear plugs out in
the fourth quarter just because I was running around the
press box there, kind of annoying me. And just for that,
(24:09):
you know, fifteen minutes I had them out. It was
kind of giving me a headache. If I had done
that the entire game like an war Kirk Bowles were
toughing it out without without earphone ear plugs because they're
either bigger bend than me or insane. But if I
did not either them, I don't know if I would
have been able to last.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
Probably I'm gonna definitely lean towards the insane when it
comes to that. But let's get back to the football field,
because this is a big week for the Texas Longhorse.
Not only are they back at home at DKR after
forty two days away from DKR, but now they get
a top ten ranked team and the Vanderbilt Commodores and
(24:51):
Diego Pavia. The dude has the biggest boulder on his shoulder,
bigger than what I would think Baker Mayfield has.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Because of the way that he goes his business.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
He's gonna be a big challenge for this football team.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
I don't know if.
Speaker 8 (25:06):
Anyone had a bigger chip on their shoulders. Big that's
a different debate for a different day. Yeah, I mean
this is I mean, you can Oklahoma with six, I guess,
and they played them in Ohio State was three. So
there's another top ten test, maybe not the toughest test
of Texas the season, but or at that point in
the season where Texas has no room for air, and
I'm sure they might rather be playing an Auburn to
(25:28):
be in the Vanderbilt team that obviously, you know, kind
of has a chip on their shoulder from losing last year.
You know, you have someone like Cedric Alexander coming home
and wanted to show off in front of family and friends.
And this is a team that, you know, legitimately for
good reason things that they can make the college for
the playoffs or the SEC championship games. So Vanderbilt is
not the Vanderbilt from four or five years ago. They're
(25:49):
not gonna come into Austin and just just roll over.
I do think maybe their schedule is you know, some
of their big wins aren't as impressive now because obviously
LSU is their coach and South Carolina inspired a little
bit in Missouri doesn't have a starting quarterback anymore, but
this is still a team seven and one, and seven
and one Texas would kill to be seven to one
(26:09):
right now, So you gotta, yeah, come in and get
the job done. This is gonna be a tough test.
It's a really good quarterback, Danny.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
We talked about this early, early before the season started
when Texas brought in Caldwell and we why would you
bring in this this quarterback? You already have two or
three quarterbacks. You remember that conversation we had. How do
you feel about that move?
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Now?
Speaker 8 (26:40):
I mean, if you're a Texas fan, you're you're pretty happy.
At about Saturday afternoon, around seven o'clock, I mean, it
was clear. I mean, I think Steve said it for something.
Got a chance to talk to him that he just
wasn't necessarily confident in the depth behind Arch. And that's
what happens when you have a true freshman in kJ
Lacy may have a really good future, but he's still
(27:01):
a true freshman. And you know, it's kind of hard
to be throwing a true freshman to the Wolves and
sec play and it just looks like Trey Owens as moody,
as he's being on Twitter just is not going to
be something here, and so they needed some depth behind
Arch that they trusted. This is a veteran guy. He's not,
you know, some star quarterback. I think he was like
a two hundred and eleventh on the quarterback rankings for
(27:24):
two four seven. But he has experience, and sometimes that's
just what you want. You want that experience in the room.
You want that experience in the pinch. Sherion Matthew Caldwell
has seen enough football in his days that you know,
he can run into the game against Florida and make
that pass, or he can run into overtime against Mississippi
State with all those cowboys clinging, and we'll see what happens.
If he has to start an entire game, that may
(27:48):
be a little bit different. But you know, sometimes you
just want experience in the room. And he gave something
that Steve obviously liked on film, and that's that's why
he's the backup quarterback of Texas.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
And we're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin America Statesman.
You can follow him at Underscore. Danny Davis and Danny,
you know, we've talked a lot about the inadequacies of
the offensive line. But last week we got to see
arch Manning grow up again in front of our eyes,
probably his best game at the University of Texas. And
(28:18):
he must really like playing against Mississippi State because last
year he lit him up again. What are some of
the things that you've seen in arches game from game
one of the season to where he is right now.
Speaker 8 (28:31):
I think he's just probably just getting more comfortable with
the role of being a starter. I've been impressed with
him just kind of how he's handled I don't want
to say adversity, because there's a lot a life upper
than having people be mean to you because you aren't
playing football well and you get to go home to
your you know, millions of dollars and live the life
(28:52):
of Arch Manning. I mean, he is a pretty charmed life.
But this is probably the first time in his in
his life that he's been criticized, that people have kind
of turned on him, or that he's played poorly on
the football field, And I've been impressed with the way
he's trying to handle that, with the way he's handled
us in the media, with the way he's handled the fan.
He's a pretty smart kid, it doesn't seem to be
really engaging with you know, too many people online on
(29:16):
social media, so that probably helps. But on the field,
it seems like he's just been developing, and it's a
little bit it's not easy to develop when you're getting killed.
There some time he dropped back to pass because the
line's been so leaky, or you're not getting much help
for your running game. But he's you know, he figured
it out and he's been clutched, so when he's needed
to be clutched the last last couple of weeks and
(29:36):
come back from Kentucky and that performance and play the
way he did in Starkfield was pretty impressive.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Daniel, I heard a lot of people and I feel
to tend to get on call Will saying this moment
is really big.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Is it may be too big for him?
Speaker 2 (29:56):
I don't think so, because he's never played with five
star talent before. He's never played with a group of
wide receivers that are as as a depth as the
ones that Texas has in a tight end and five
star running backs. Like, so, I feel like he's gonna
do really well. Like do you have your thoughts on
(30:19):
how he's going to perform?
Speaker 8 (30:22):
I think he's going to perform well enough for Texas
to win. I'm not going to come out and say that.
I think Matthew Carball is going to come out if
he does play and you know, throw for four hundred
yards and five touchdowns and now we're going to see
also we're gonna have a quarterback controversy to talk about
next week. But I think with his experience, with him
being the older guy, but Steve having a week to
(30:44):
game plan for him and build a plan around him
and those weapons that you mentioned, I think that they
can figure out something to be banderbilt. You know, if
this was Ohio State or if this was Georgia in
a couple of weeks, you know, we maybe having a
different conversation. But you are correct. This is the best
team that Matthew Caldwell has ever you know, you know,
played on. But you know, let's also be realistic. This
(31:05):
is also a you know, you know, journeyman quarterback who
you know is was a backup at Troy as a backup.
Gardner Webb was a backup at Jackson. Will says, I
don't think we can just expect him to, you know,
be challenging for for any school records or you know,
SEC Player of the Week honters. But I think he's
good enough to get the job done, and you know,
gets the talents around him and the coaching around him
(31:28):
for them to figure something out this week.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
There he is.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
That's what it's all about, right there, Danny, because uh,
I feel the same way. I think this guy's got
a lot of talent. I think his upside is going
to show with the talent around him, and I do
believe that coach start is not going to put too
much on him to be able to overwhelm him. But
before we let you go, I'd be remiss if we
didn't talk. Uh, Texas women's basketball. They played a couple
(31:53):
of scrimmages. That's exactly what they were. They talked, they
called him exhibitions, but the score told us it was scrimmage.
Is what are some of the things that you saw
in that? As they get ready to tip off on Monday,
I mean.
Speaker 8 (32:06):
You want me to talk about Rory now? Do you
want me to talk about her?
Speaker 3 (32:09):
Yes? Please? Please? That's the only reason I'm here.
Speaker 8 (32:14):
I mean this is you don't want to get too
much out of these exhibitions. I mean, this is the
number fourteen in the country playing two D two teams.
They're good to D two teams with their two D
D two teams. I'm so sure when Rory goes out
and you know, has like twenty assists and very minimal
turn on I don't know if she had a single
turnover in these two exhibitions, you know that shouldn't be
(32:35):
too surprised. But that's also something you'd like to say.
If we were talking about Rory and she had tennissists
and ten turnovers and these exhibitions, you know it'd be
cause for alarm. But you definitely want to see some
of these younger players. We expect Roy Harmon to be
an All American candidate, we expect Madison Burker Booker to
be an All American, that's not a surprise, but want
(32:55):
some of these younger players step up and justice. Carlton's
looked great, Jordan Lee's coming off a good summer, repressed,
and I don't think she played on Monday, but she's
another year under her belt, and so you need these
sophomores to step up, and need these transfers to kind
of mesh quickly, which isn't going to help with the
Ashon Judge kind of being injured right now, but it's
(33:16):
actually seemed to lose a lot of experience with Shay
Holly and Taylor Jones moving on, some of the people
job transferring out. So there are some holes on this team,
and so you want to see these exhibitions. You want
to see some of these new faces kind of shine
because we expect Rory to be to be great and
we expect Mass to be great. So what happened with
the other eleven people on the team.
Speaker 3 (33:36):
No doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
There is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. Rebecca said,
now you know, Danny don't want us to follow him
on social media.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
So Danny, I'm sending you a message, you know, so
we can, you know, get on some text there is
and social media posts together.
Speaker 8 (33:57):
I know social media, but hearts can tell you my
by text thread, my text, my group text game and
can be sometimes erradict. Well look it on that.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
No doubt, no doubt, there is Danny Davis of the
Austin American States But make sure you follow them regardless.
Over Miss Becky says, follow Danny at Underscore.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
Danny Davis appreciate you, Danny.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
So all right, when we come back, we're going to
continue the conversations.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
World Series action. We tied two to two, baby, let's
see what happens.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
But we'll break it all down right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. Is all
great stuff our got. Danny Davis up the Austin American
Statesman follow them at underscore.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Danny Davis, I wanted.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
To get into this right now because Major League Baseball
is having a heck of a time, and I mean
on the good side of it, where these games have
come back to back and they have been playing their
behinds off. After six hours and thirty four or thirty
nine minute game, they had to come right back the
next day and they did not disappoint. La was disappointed,
(35:06):
but Toronto was not, as They've got a big time
victory with a big home run from one Vladimir Guerrero Junior.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
There's a fly by a deep left center field headed back.
There's gone down.
Speaker 5 (35:23):
Junior gives the James lame the franchise face, putting the
team on his back. I'll tell you, this guy's amazing
and he's ready for everything. I mean this is the
first mistake that o'tani has made and he didn't get
it back. And he can appreciate that because he does
that to every other picture when he's at the plate.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
Seven to the postseason for Guerrero, seven home runs in
the postseason puts him right up there with some special
special talent. Obviously, show Hey, Otani is somebody that continues
to do both things from the pictures mound to the
home plate. And yesterday was the first time he didn't
(36:02):
get a hit in the playoffs since Game one of
the NLCS.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
But show Hey, I.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
Told you, guys, after being tired of being on the basis,
I told you about how most of the time they
send a starting pitcher home to go get some rest
to be ready to go.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
But you can't do that for show Hey.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
Because he was the offense walked five times, which is
still amazing to me. You tired, Yeah, every time he
was laboring on the mound, And I was interested in
what John Smolt kept saying last night. It was like
he was being very critical of the pitches that he
was throwing, but he was still being effective.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
He made a mistake. You don't pitch the Vladimir Garero
number one.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
Just like you don't pitch the show, hey, you make
everybody else around them hit the ball. And he was
talking about his breaking ball, about how he needed delocate
it better. It wasn't a breaking ball that was getting hammered.
Was his fastball that was getting hammered. His breaking ball
was good. Nobody was timing that, so I was. It
was interesting listening to that. But no rest for the
(37:09):
weary because they are right back at it again tonight
seven o'clock on Fox.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Trey uh Y Savage.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
I don't want to call him a Savage, but yesvich
he will be starting versus Blake Snaill. He was one
the rookie that has went from rookie ball all the
way to the major leagues in one season. It's an
amazing story and he's an integral part of the success.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
How do you do that? Man?
Speaker 2 (37:40):
He was concerned because sometimes you can slip through the
radar because you wasn't he was a first round pick.
He was a first round pick. Oh so it wasn't
due to crack, no, no, he was.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
He went and did what he was supposed to do,
and I mean it was impressive, to say the least
for his journey in the way that it was, the
way he went about it, and for him to be
in the big leagues to be somebody that has been
an integral part. He's the game one starter in the playoffs,
(38:13):
going up against Blake Snell, who has who's come back
to earth a little bit for the Dodgers, so they
need to good Blake Snell if the Dodgers want to
take the lead. This is a big matchup because the
game will go back to Toronto, and if Toronto can
get this game, oh oh, it could be tough for
the Dodgers. Our number one is in the Bucks. Our
(38:35):
number two is just around the corner. We'll have in
FL talk. Indianapolis is the hottest team in the league.
And I think we know why Marcus was not happy
this morning when I brought the news to him right
here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff right
(38:56):
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and
our number one one. We got a chance to listen
to coach Sark as he broke down what is going
on with Vanderbilt. Diego Pavia, the kid with the chip
on the shoulder and what they bring and what we
need to expect. We also got a chance to talk
to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. He does
(39:17):
have his hearing because he was smart enough to take
earplugs so he didn't have to listen to those cow bells.
And we just talked about the World Series being tied
two games to two off the big swing by Vladimir
Guerrero Junior for a two run homer off of O Tani.
We'll continue conversations about the SEC and the next segment,
(39:39):
Lane Kiffin has some things to say about bread venables
and you got to hear what Dion Sanders talked about
when it comes to coaches being fired and the expectations
of fan bases and schools. You do not want to
miss it. But right now I want to talk about
the NFL. The NFL continues to be hot and heavy.
(40:00):
We get back on to the football field tomorrow night
as the Baltimore Ravens will be taking on the Miami
Dolphins in Miami. All signs are pointing to Lamar Jackson
being back on to the football field, which they need him.
They were able to pull off the big win against
Chicago last week. Can't believe I said a big win
(40:22):
against Chicago, but they were able to do that without Lamar.
They did it with Tyler Huntley being back in there.
But one of the teams that I wanted to talk
about is the Indianapolis coach. We've been kind of poopulling
about it and trying to wait for the conversation about
(40:43):
are they really that good? You heard yesterday Mark VanderMeer,
the voice of the Houston Texans, he said, you can't
wait until they play each other and how the conversation
is going to be totally different because he just can't
stand them.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
But now I'll be become a fan.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
And we have understood then seeing the stories of the
young lady ownership that has been standing on the sidelines,
and they've been kind of talking about her the entire time,
and it's Carli Ursay Gordon And one of the biggest
things that we've noticed is her taking notes and they
(41:23):
said she's got an ear piece in and Marcus as
a fan of the Houston Texans and you're them being
seven and one and leading a division.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
These are things that you're not happy about, are you? Oh? No, no,
definitely not happy.
Speaker 9 (41:40):
I was used to the Indeapolis Coats being like the
Tennessee Titans being in eped in this division. And this
woman is showing like real guts. YEP, she's a go getter,
she's learning the game, she's she might be a problem,
She's definitely going to be problem. And here is her
(42:02):
talking about why she is on the sideline, why she
is seen and not heard.
Speaker 10 (42:09):
I need to learn more about this. I need to
be able to say, is this person full of bs?
Do they even know what they're talking about? And I
think one of the things that being on the headset
has really helped me learn is to the question earlier.
There is such a complex organism a football team and
(42:30):
how it operates and on game day and you could say, oh,
that person ran that route wrong. When you learn to
find someone tagged the wrong wide receiver and it wasn't
really the player's vault, it was the person that called
it so, and it's never I think that's been a
very valuable because it also helps us be able to
(42:50):
know where do we need to make tweaks, what resources
do we need, what are what do we need to fix?
So much of it as comes down to just how
we operate and how things work, and the headsets are
really I wish more. I would suggest it for anyone
else that has to pay coaches and gms millions and
millions of dollars.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
It helps you make a less expensive mistake.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
Potentially, Holy cow, holy Snikey's batman. Now we're talking like
you have people being held to a fire. That the
players are being held too and more common and I
mean that's why you have people like Peyton Manning and
(43:33):
Troy Aikman and guys that called their own plays because
they were able to win and when they made a
decision and it failed, it hung on them, right.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
But like if the general manager, i.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Mean the offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator is calling plays
and it didn't work, is it the fault of the player.
So yeah, I like the fact that she's out there monitoring, uh,
everybody's jobs.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
And as I said, she's seen, not heard. You know,
she's not on the sideline trying to be the focus
of the team. What she's trying to do is learn
the game, and so she doesn't she wants to have
intelligent conversations as well. She doesn't want she just wants
to understand this guy is full of it because he
doesn't know ball. This is a guy that is telling
(44:26):
me something like I'm not knowing what's going on, and
I'm actually paying attention and learning the game the way
it's supposed to be played.
Speaker 3 (44:34):
So it's kind of refreshing.
Speaker 1 (44:35):
On the other hand, where you hear from the Cowboys
and some of the other owners that are very voisterous
Cleveland Browns and what they're doing, there's a reason why
there's a turnaround.
Speaker 9 (44:48):
Well, well, well, don't give Jerry ideals telling him to
put talking about putting on headsets.
Speaker 3 (44:54):
It's a one way headset. You just hear, you don't speak,
it's one you don't think.
Speaker 9 (45:00):
Yeah, you think Jerry's gonna not be able to speak
if he gets some hands set.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
I'm sure, yeah, exactly. Noah, we're gonna take that away
from him. But it's it's refreshing to see what the
Indianapolis coach as I said, Marcus, I know it's not
a good thing for you, but what you see from
from uh Daniel Jones, that offensive line. Daniel Jones was
sacked for the first time on Sunday. They've played eight games.
(45:27):
It was the first time he was sacked was on Sunday.
Then you look at what Jonathan Taylor has been able
to do, whether he's catching the ball out of the
backfield or running it at the line of scrimmage. He
has been one of those top ten players, maybe on
the MVP side of things, even though they don't give
it to a running back.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
But they probably should.
Speaker 1 (45:49):
But you start to look at across the NFL and
try to figure out which teams are legit and which
ones are just kind of standing around.
Speaker 3 (45:59):
And one one of the teams that I continue to.
Speaker 1 (46:01):
Look at is the LA Rams, not just because I
picked them to win the West, but they're a team
that is truly, truly eighteen.
Speaker 3 (46:12):
You look at the way that Matthew Stafford is playing.
Speaker 1 (46:15):
We're talking about Daniel Jones, but look at what Matthew
Stafford has been able to do as the starting quarterback.
You look at his relationship with Devonte Adams as he
came in there. They still got the great running game
with kyn Williams, and that defense is getting better and
better every single week.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
And Pooven lequ has been injured and now he's back
this week. Him coming back not good for the competition.
Speaker 1 (46:42):
And you know, you look at the West and it's
the Seattle Seahawks, who Sam Darnold is proving people that
he wasn't he wasn't a one trick pony in Minnesota.
He's gone to Seattle has them playing very well. The
San Francisco forty nine ers, they stubbed their toe last
week against the Houston Texans, but they're starting to get better.
(47:05):
We saw Christian McCaffrey go off the other day and
now he's starting to be healthy. But they're still dealing
with those injuries. And then you got the Arizona Cardinals
who will play the Cowboys on Monday Night.
Speaker 3 (47:17):
They'll probably find a way to win.
Speaker 1 (47:19):
But you know, you sit there and look at them
and you're like, Okay, they're the worst team out of
the bunch, and that's just because they can't get it going.
They lost five games in a row after starting two
and zero. Then you look at what Tampa Bay has
been able to do with Baker Mayfield just holding it
together with bubble gum and baling wire because he's lost
(47:41):
all of his wide receivers. He hadn't had his wide receivers.
Yet they're still sitting at six and two. And then
of course what we saw on Sunday Night Football with
the Green Bay Packers beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in convincing fashion.
You look around and you're like, wow, Wow, these are
(48:03):
some solid teams. And I'll be remissed if I didn't
mention the Denver Broncos. And of course we talked about
the hottest team in football of the Kansas City Chiefs
as he's gotten all of his weapons back. So this
is going to be a race till the end because
who are the pretenders and who are the real contenders.
Speaker 2 (48:23):
That that division is going to be based on who
stays injury free, because all of those teams are pretty even.
You know, everybody has their strengths, everybody has the weaknesses.
But at the end of the day, like Out of
the West is going to be, it's going to be
one of those teams.
Speaker 3 (48:40):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (48:41):
So and Sam Darnel, I've had him on my fantasy team,
so like, I see him getting eighteen nineteen points every game.
But you need more than that, right of course, it
comes down to, well, you need twenty four. But I'm
just saying he's consistent, yep. And when you have a
consistent quarterback. Then you know where other places need to
(49:04):
step up. And then with Seattle's situation, it's the running game,
like that running game is just horrible. Like they You know,
you also have Kenneth Walker on your fans, I do,
and he's doing nothing.
Speaker 3 (49:19):
Nothing. He was a top three pick. Yo, oh, I know,
I haven't. That guy's like getting.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
Six seven points, like he's gotta step it up.
Speaker 3 (49:31):
Well.
Speaker 1 (49:32):
Right now, they're sitting at five and two in the AFC.
We still have the New England Patriots with Drake May,
winner of five straight, and the Buffalo Bills with Josh Allen.
Speaker 3 (49:42):
They are sitting at five and two. Patriots are sitting
at six and two, And who would have thunk it?
Speaker 1 (49:47):
Who would have thunk it that you will get a
coach like Vrabel and your team will win and then
he leaves. You get fired from Tennessee, which are going
back to the Meddaling ownership. He gets fired from Tennessee.
They get the number one pick overall and they are
one in seven. Wow, one in seven wow. Yeah, I
(50:10):
understand the problem there.
Speaker 3 (50:12):
Ownership. Coming up next, we're.
Speaker 1 (50:14):
Gonna talk sec bunch of big matchups this weekend, and
of course I want you to hear from Dion Sanders
and SEC zoned Lane Kiffin, you don't want to miss
it right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning
(50:35):
Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen one hundred
The Zone.
Speaker 3 (50:39):
We just had a conversation.
Speaker 1 (50:42):
During the break about all these things that are happening
in college football, the NFL and all these betting scandals,
and I wanted to touch on something real quick that
SEC Commissioner Greg Sanky submitted reportedly submitted a memo to
the NCAA President Charlie Baker on Saturday, urging the association
(51:07):
to resind its recent decision to allow collegiate student athletes
and the athletic department personnel to gamble on professional sports,
which we all had that conversation and Coach Sark thought
it was a horrible decision by the NCAA. And I
said it when I first read the story, I said,
(51:29):
this might be the dumbest thing that you can possibly do,
is allow it to these athletes to be able to
now spend all their money on gambling. Now, it's an
isolated situation. I don't think everybody does that. I'm not
saying that, but it puts you in a vulnerable position
(51:51):
as an athlete because let's just say CJ. Baxter calls
Jean Robinson and says, hey, how's everything going in Atlanta?
Speaker 3 (52:01):
What's going on?
Speaker 1 (52:02):
Well, Michael Pennis is dealing with an injury or something
like that, and they use it against them and going
bet that Michael Pennix Jr. Is not going to play
or he's not going to be good, so the team
can so they can go out in place a bet
to balance out the win. There's a lot of things
(52:23):
that is wrong about all of that. Now it could
still be happening, but I don't want the players to
have the ability to do so, as they're right becoming,
they're coming Christians.
Speaker 2 (52:34):
If you if you say it's okay, then it's given
confirmation that okay.
Speaker 3 (52:39):
Yep, I can do it, and some people don't need that.
Speaker 1 (52:43):
Coach Shark talked about that and how he was not
all excited about any of that conversation and where it
could be and they're talking about putting a hold on that.
So we shall see what exactly it turns out to
be moving forward. But also this we there's some big
games that are going to be happening in the SEC. Obviously,
(53:05):
the ranked matchup is number nine Vanderbilt coming to DKR
Texas Memorial Stadium. They're sitting at seven and one, three
and one in conference, Texas sitting at six and two
and three and one in conference. Everything is still in
front of them. You also have number five Georgia taking
on Florida Gators that will be at two thirty kickoff.
(53:27):
Georgia sitting at number five, Texas will have them as
an opponent after the bye week. And of course you
have Mississippi State who just lost to Texas. They're going
to be reeling going up against Arkansas, Texas's other opponent
at home before the season ends, South Carolina versus number
(53:49):
seven Old Miss Old Miss continues to take jabs.
Speaker 3 (53:53):
And I want you to hear.
Speaker 1 (53:56):
Lane Kiffin after the defeat of Oklahoma and how Mac
Max Vintable Vinables was Brett Brent Vinnables was talking a
little trash.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
It still felt like.
Speaker 1 (54:07):
They were the better team, but they didn't show it
on the scoreboards.
Speaker 3 (54:14):
A that's a hot take a better team. I wouldn't
have thought that people watching.
Speaker 11 (54:21):
I would say that, you know, I felt that one
we won at their place, and whether that as a
defensive head coach, you would normally, you know, wish for
and one of my eight points. And I think we
left a lot out there. I think we should have
won by a couple of scores. So I don't know
how he evaluated that game that they were the better team.
(54:43):
I mean, we way more yards twenty one first downs
to fourteen, and we played what eighty seven plays of
offense and they had one sack and didn't force any turnovers.
That's a that's an interesting take, but what whatever he
needs to say.
Speaker 3 (55:00):
And also following up to road trips, maybe maybe they
had the better team last year too, beat him.
Speaker 9 (55:12):
Yeah, he just pulled out all them. It's like, okay,
let me tell you, we could have blew you out
by more exactly.
Speaker 2 (55:19):
That interview was another two or three minutes long. Oh yeah,
when he was talking about he kept on interrupting the
guy giving him more factual statistics on why that.
Speaker 1 (55:31):
Was statistically wrong. Yeah, that's yeah, he went there. Yeah,
that's why he said it was a hot take. That's
why he said it was a hot because, yeah, he
beat them multiple times as an assistant coach. And offensive
coordinator for multiple teams and beat them pretty soundly, where
Venables was the defensive coordinator in a lot of those games.
(55:54):
So Lane Kiffin knows exactly what it is about Brent Vinables.
Speaker 3 (55:59):
You can't see here waiting on it.
Speaker 1 (56:01):
Well, I mean because he saw the quote. He saw
it and was like, wait, what when the numbers tell
you one thing and it creates you another way? Now,
it's not like that. So they're back at home against
South Carolina. South Carolina. I don't know if they're going
to keep their coach at the end of the season.
It would be interesting to see that. And then Oklahoma
(56:24):
number eighteen team will be traveling to Tennessee the number
fourteen teams. Both teams are six and two, Oklahoma two
and two in the SEC and Tennessee three and two
in the SEC. And then the nightcap of the SEC
is zero to five in Conference Kentucky traveling to Jordan
(56:45):
Harris Stadium taking on Auburn. They are in flux as well,
so we will see what ends up happening with their
but Deon Sanders. Deon Sanders was talking big twelve coach
who has had a tough season. Let's just be honest
and call it what it is. It has not gone
(57:06):
the way Dion had expected. And he was asked about
the coaching changes and everything that's.
Speaker 3 (57:12):
Going on with that.
Speaker 1 (57:14):
But then he was asked about how society and fan
bases are looking at teams every single year, and his
thought was real interesting.
Speaker 4 (57:27):
At school, do you think that you know, these schools
and fan bases have lost the sense of patience in
the process building.
Speaker 3 (57:33):
There's no one patients in this world.
Speaker 12 (57:34):
How do we exude patients when we could call up
right now and get a piece of delivery right here,
that that that you could call and get a ride
waiting outside for you.
Speaker 3 (57:46):
Everything is expeditious in this country. Everyone wants to quick
fix the quick things.
Speaker 12 (57:51):
You could you got mail or the brads too right
you get married, you know right away you could get
a BBL. You could come in here flat flat as
don't know what at least is a snicker. So it
is this is a different country that we look at.
A man ain't nobody got no patience no more. I
understand that, and I don't either. I don't have patience
(58:12):
as well. I want things done right now because I'm
used to getting up the working putting in the work,
and you want to result from the work you put in.
Speaker 3 (58:22):
It don't oftentimes work like that. That's a great question.
I appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (58:28):
To say, where was the lie there was where was
the line? There was no lie, There was no lie.
You could come in here flat as I don't know
what when he dropped that mail or.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
The bride, everybody in the pot because it was a
couple of that hand them. They were like, wait a minute, hey,
why is he pointing me out? Did he see did
he see what I ordered? Exactly?
Speaker 1 (58:54):
I mean, it is true when you sit back and
you really evaluate, it's instantaneous.
Speaker 3 (59:00):
This right here is so smart. But you can see us,
you can see us, and it is Uh.
Speaker 1 (59:09):
It is one of those things that as you sit
back and you take a moment, it's like North Carolina.
Look at what's going on at North Carolina. Yeah, but
you will look through your fingers, look through.
Speaker 3 (59:20):
That's not helping. It's like it's like looking into the sun.
Speaker 2 (59:25):
Remember the kids in middle school, they like just looking
stair at the sun.
Speaker 1 (59:30):
You can see the dot. Yeah, that's all because your
eyes was about to burn out.
Speaker 3 (59:34):
That's what you were.
Speaker 1 (59:35):
That's what you were saying, but yeah, you you start
to look around college football and it's not just college though.
I mean, we're in a big time market. We are
in a place in time where high leverage, high leverage
decisions are being made, sometimes in a knee jerk reaction,
(59:57):
and now people are paying the price for them and
keep talking about were don't have enough money in the world,
But it seems that we have enough money in college
athletics and NFL because people continue to make these decisions
of running coaches out of town before they can even
build the culture that they wanted. Just think if they
(01:00:20):
would have they brought in Sark and he went that
five and seven that first year. Now, looking where this program.
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
Is, well, we're gonna talk about it in the World's
Strongest Take.
Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
Well, the world's Strongest Take just happens to be right
around the corner. What so coming up next you'll hear
I don't know what he's talking about, but we will
hear exactly what the world's Strongest man has for his
World's Strongest take right here on the morning kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred is one.
Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
He's a WWEE Hall of.
Speaker 1 (01:00:49):
Famer and he's also recognized as the world's strongest man.
But at this time Monday through Friday, he lets you
know what time it is. He is Mark and he
brings you his world's strongest take right here. Oh the morning, kickoff,
Take it away, big fee, take it away, big phone.
Speaker 3 (01:01:08):
Hart, what's up? You know what time it is? No time,
it's eight thirty three and oh you still suck.
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
This time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man.
Speaker 3 (01:01:26):
My guys back then they didn't know.
Speaker 12 (01:01:29):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
Now I'm hot. They all on me. Guys, I'm I'm
I'm just.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Disappointed, man. Like I do my best to be optimistic
all the time. I do my best to not be
hyperbolic when it comes to people's failure because we've all
had our own failure and we don't want to be
judged so harshly for our failure that it affects everybody else.
Speaker 3 (01:02:02):
Now, if it just affects me, then fine, you know what,
I could deal with it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
I'm tough, but you don't want it to affect your wife,
you don't want it to affect your kids, your community,
that kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (01:02:17):
And I feel like with what coach Dion.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
Sanders said, there's a lot of validity to the fact
that this coaching criticism carries too much of a burden.
Now there are a lot of people that are going
to elect to be executives in sports rather than coaches
now because of the harsh criticism of being a coach.
(01:02:49):
When you look at the carousel of the coaches that
have been fired, and I mean it's a long, long
laundry list of people that you would not expected Brian Kelly,
Billy Napier, James Franklin, Sam Pittman, Mike Gundy, Deshaun Falster. Well,
(01:03:16):
I shouldn't put the Shawn fault in fosteron there because
he hadn't had the kind of season like those other
coaches had.
Speaker 6 (01:03:24):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Jay Norville, like those guys.
Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
Are seasoned coaches with a lot of skins on the
wall and a lot of players that have gone on
to play at.
Speaker 3 (01:03:34):
The professional level played under them.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
It's okay now to say, out of all that time
that you've worked and experienced greatness one or two seasons,
now you're trash.
Speaker 3 (01:03:51):
Now you're not good anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
I feel like it needs to change, like we're we
need to temporary expectation.
Speaker 3 (01:04:02):
My take is this.
Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
With the coaching having a bad season. It shouldn't be
punishable by being fired. If you want to take their
money away, first have clauses in like, hey man, if
you don't earn your money, like we're not going to
pay you ten million dollars a year and you're doing
(01:04:27):
a four million dollar job. Maybe the coach will be
able to change some things, hire a different staff, like
be more diligent and.
Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
Is recruiting and whatever. But termination is too much.
Speaker 2 (01:04:46):
These people have families, right, I mean not all of them,
but the majority of these guys have wives and kids.
They take the job, they come in and they uproot
their whole life to go into this community and be
a coach. And now you're saying, hey man, in a year,
(01:05:07):
I don't care if your daughter is just now starting
to like the school, is just now starting to get
comfortable and come out of her shell, y'all gotta go.
Speaker 3 (01:05:18):
Now you gotta move.
Speaker 2 (01:05:21):
How does that affect What about the wife, she's doing
community activism, she get a job in the same city.
You uproot whole families, Like I don't think that the
world of sport should be uprooted these coaches the way
(01:05:43):
that they do so quickly.
Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
What say you, hey man, you are the one that
has always said life ain't fair, right, life is not fair.
These guys get paid a ton of money to be successful.
They're not doing that, they understand, and their buyouts are
giving them the opportunity to live a very good life
after that. I do agree that you've got to be
(01:06:08):
able to build your program. I understand that. But if
everything's not going to change immediately, I think the people
that are making the decisions have to do their due
diligence and understand what this job entails.
Speaker 3 (01:06:24):
And what do I mean by that.
Speaker 1 (01:06:25):
I mean you have to understand that this is not
the same playing field in which there was the haves
and the have nots.
Speaker 3 (01:06:33):
This is balance of power.
Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
Now everybody's playing on the same accord, where there's money
that is on these sides or whatever. But now I
can go get myself a Mark Henry to replace somebody else.
I can go give myself a Mike Harts to replace
arch Man. I can go and get these types of
players that now put me in this spot. And the
(01:06:57):
expectation is, if I'm spending that much money for a
young player to come here, then you bet I had
I had a conversation with a parent the other day
and they were saying, the difference between a star here
and a star there, and I'm talking about break rankings,
(01:07:17):
it's two hundred to three hundred thousand dollars. Now, if
you're a four star, five star, your money go up.
So this is this is not as we talked about
with Vanderbilt. This is not our parents Vanderbilt anymore. This
is real life, real struggles, real decisions. The only problem
(01:07:38):
that I have with all of this is that buyout clause.
That's big money to do nothing. Where I signed up
for that at because I want to be a part
of that part. Because as you had, we got a
man he was like, hey man, grab y'all's computer and
(01:08:00):
get them.
Speaker 3 (01:08:02):
The most lucrative deal your headphones. Your headphones are those hoursphones.
Speaker 9 (01:08:09):
The most lucrative deal out there is not being a
head coach. It's being a former exactly. That is that
is the hottest thing ever.
Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
Our boy, our boy Chip Brown used to always tell
me his goal in life was to get fired by
Dan Snyder of the Washington Commanders because he will pay
you to go away, take money with all this money
with you, because that's what I did, So it is
it is definitely one of those things that we continue
to look at and continue to have those conversations about
(01:08:44):
what's next. It don't matter what's next because the game
is not changing. As we always talk about the it's
out of the bag. Everything's out now. So it's like, man,
there there is no tomorrow. You know what I'm saying.
So we'll continue these conversations. We'll continue to watch the journey,
(01:09:05):
and we'll see which coach get let go.
Speaker 3 (01:09:07):
In a couple of weeks. He won, one year, he won,
last week, no matter, calling for his head already in
New York.
Speaker 1 (01:09:17):
We'll close out the show and send you to Dan Patrick.
Michael Jordans spoke, and so did Carmelo. Load management, Mark.
That's what they do when they let you go, they say, hey,
go work on your load.
Speaker 3 (01:09:29):
Manage right here.
Speaker 1 (01:09:31):
All of the morning kickoff, that wasn't me, that was
all you right here. Old Sports Radio Am thirteen hundred
The Zone. We've been having a lot of fun today
talking about this big time match up this weekend when
we talked about NFL shout out to Danny Davis of
(01:09:53):
the Austin American Statesman talking about his trip to Starkville, Mississippi,
as the Texas Longhorns do the unthinkable and that large
come from behind victory, scoring twenty four points in the
fourth quarter and of course scoring in the overtime to
get the victory forty five to thirty eight. Now they
(01:10:15):
have a top ten matchup in the SEC against Vanderbilt,
who is ranked number nine, and they are coming into town.
The NBA season is underway as well, and one of
the biggest stories that we have been talking about for
some time has been load management. Michael Jordan is now
(01:10:37):
part of the NBC. The NBA on NBC, and he
had a conversation with Mike Turrico and was talking about
what load management looks like.
Speaker 5 (01:10:50):
The term load management has become such a hot button
in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (01:10:54):
I know you're going to talk about that one because
you played eighty games a lot a lot, you played
eighty two.
Speaker 13 (01:11:00):
What do you think of when you hear the term
load management thrown around? Uh, well, it shouldn't be needed
first and foremost. You know, I never wanted to miss
a game because it was an opportunity to prove it was.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
It was something that I felt like, you know, the
fans are there that watch me play, I want to.
Speaker 13 (01:11:18):
I want to impress that guy way up on top
who probably worked his ass off to get a ticket
or to get money to buy the ticket.
Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
You really cared about the guy who shutting the top
of the palace in Auburn Hills watch when you came
to Detroit.
Speaker 6 (01:11:31):
Yeah, because I know he's probably yelling at me, and
I don't want to shut him up. You know he's
calling me all kinds of names. I definitely want to
shut him up. You have a duty that if they're
wanting to see you, and as an entertainer.
Speaker 3 (01:11:42):
I want to show right.
Speaker 13 (01:11:44):
So if the guys are coming to watch me play,
I don't want to miss that opportunity.
Speaker 6 (01:11:49):
Physically, if I can't do it, then I can't do it.
But physically, if I can do it and I just
don't feel like.
Speaker 1 (01:11:56):
Doing it, that's a whole different Lens slowed management. You
got to make sure that you get out there and
play every single day. I said, all the time. You're
not playing basketball every single day. You have days off
in between. Why are you not able to go out
(01:12:16):
there and play. I don't understand it.
Speaker 7 (01:12:20):
I was not.
Speaker 2 (01:12:23):
A fan of Michael Jeffrey Jordan, But I respected him
because he came out of there even sick. He went
and played and it took a catastrophic injury for him
not to get on the court. And these guys today, man,
they get a hang nail or they played. They don't
(01:12:46):
want to play games where they play on a Thursday
and then they play on a Wednesday and then play
on a Thursday. I don't do back to backs. What
are you talking about? You don't do back to backs
like it's it's it's just really ridiculous to me.
Speaker 3 (01:13:03):
The whole the whole term is horrible.
Speaker 1 (01:13:06):
Yeah, it does not make uh, it doesn't make much
sense to me, especially when and it messes with the money,
messes with people who don't have the money that save
up to have the money to go to those events
and even out there.
Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
Yeah, it's it's it's it's difficult to comprehend.
Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
But I also wanted you to hear about what Carmelo
Anthony had to say when it comes to load management.
Speaker 6 (01:13:31):
For me, I've played kind of recently, right, so I
understood the mentality of the load manager.
Speaker 3 (01:13:39):
I understood the conversation and the dialogue. Or did you
enjoy it when they tried to manage your load. No,
because I'm I was different. It's late.
Speaker 1 (01:13:52):
Yeah, I mean it's like what what what is really
really going on when all of these guys are trying
to understand what low management is, why.
Speaker 3 (01:14:05):
Do you have it? Why do you not have it?
And the older players are laughing at them.
Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Yeah, like man, because they knew what it was about.
Now it goes back to what we were talking about.
There's so much money that is involved with all of
this that.
Speaker 5 (01:14:22):
It is.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
I don't understand how you can't show up every single
day to play. And as Michael Jordan's say, you play
two and a half hours, you get taken out of
the game. You can sit on the bench, we can
get it yourself from foul tra I don't care, but
show up, man, show up, because everybody doesn't have disposable income.
(01:14:44):
And that's the one thing that I always will go
back to because I've been there. I've been there where
you go to take your kids to go watch somebody
play and then all of a sudden they're not even
there and it maybe your kids favorite player and he
knew that it was on the schedule, but he doesn't
get a chance to see him play. Those are moments
(01:15:06):
that you don't get back, and that is why it
frustrates me to no end to where these guys who
I can't play a back to back? Why can't you
play a back to back? You played fifteen minutes in
the game, you played twenty minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:15:23):
That's a good point right there, Like, what do you
mean you can't play a back to back? Oh man,
you just don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:15:29):
No, I do know.
Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
I've seen it.
Speaker 1 (01:15:31):
I've had to ride buses and have to go out
there and play twenty hours. Yes, uncomfortable. Uncomfortable and showing up,
don't do it. So those are the things that the
hunger is what really is driving me nuts. It is like, yeah,
you would have done anything when you were younger to
(01:15:53):
get to that point. Now that you're here, you're just like,
I'm good, I'll take the day off.
Speaker 5 (01:15:58):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
I just oh man, back hurt. Really, I need to
go get massaged. Come on, man, you got everything, want.
Speaker 1 (01:16:07):
You got everything you can possibly want to refresh your
body to get back out there and go and play
another thirty to forty minutes stretching the son for a
little while. If you don't feel it that day. Check
yourself in and out, give me out, go back in,
check me. I mean there's so many different there's so
many different things that can be done to avoid this
(01:16:28):
quote unquote load manage me. Yeah, yeah, because it's final.
Speaker 3 (01:16:34):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (01:16:34):
I would be like, listen, I'm coaching. I don't know
if I'm going to play five minutes or five files,
whichever comes first. Yeah, just go play five files. Man,
I'm going up and down the court. I'm hacking people.
Speaker 3 (01:16:48):
Yes.
Speaker 13 (01:16:49):
Did you enjoy it when they tried to manage your load? No?
Speaker 3 (01:16:51):
Because I'm huh, I mean, wait what what?
Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
But yeah, you know, you start to look at it,
and I understand, Michael Jordan. Don't we consider him the
best of the best, like a lot of it. He
missed sixty four games, a total of sixty four games
in fifteen seasons in the NBA. Wow, And that, as
you said, the only reason why he was out is
because he tore his achilles or broke his.
Speaker 3 (01:17:18):
Foot, one of the two and he was out. That's it.
Speaker 1 (01:17:23):
Don't make no sense to me, man. It's frustrating getting
paid all this dog own money and got me having
to buy all these damn subscriptions to be able to
go out there to watch them, but yet you can't
show up. I want a refund with your bbling it
for Mark, Henry, for Marcus. I'm Harbaugh, harsh and please
(01:17:46):
please please play.
Speaker 3 (01:17:47):
Pray for Scott Wilson and his family.
Speaker 1 (01:17:50):
Tough times for a legend, for the Longhorns that I
know a lot of folks are hurting today, but just
remember this.
Speaker 3 (01:17:57):
Don't believe everything you see because he just looks like Shipping.
Have a great one, Peace, m
