(01:04):
he's there. Daddy Davis of the Austin American Statesman talks
all things Texas Longhorns. At seven thirty four, The Round
Rock Express are having a unique event this weekend, and
the Honey Badger has officially retired from the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I'm your host, Mike Carball.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Haares, my co host is a WWE Hall of Famer
and recognized as the world's strongest man. He is Deep
Mark Henry. But Mark is out today. He's dealing with
a family situation. So, as you know, his mother in
law has passed away, and so he's going to be
with his family for that funeral. I got Marcus is
(01:46):
behind the boards and if you want to be a
part of the show, all you got to do is
text the word Texas followed by your message to eight
one five three zero Standard data message rate may apply.
That's the word Texas followed by your message to eight
one five zero Standard data and message rates may applied. Also,
we're gonna give you a chance to win a pair
of tickets to go see Coheve and Cambria. All you
(02:09):
gotta do is pay attention. I'll give you the keyword,
but you gotta have that new and improved and always
free iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
You're gonna use the talkback feature.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
You're gonna leave us a message and you'll give yourself
a chance to win a pair of tickets. Now, as
I mentioned to you just a little while ago at
the opening.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
The Texas Longhorn.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Hall of Honor, will be announced this after this morning,
actually around ten o'clock, so make sure that you're paying
attention to that. But we are privy enough to have
two people that will be introduced as Texas Hall of
Honor members. I'm not gonna tell you who they are.
(02:54):
You just gotta tune in. At eight o'clock we'll have
the first one. At eight seven we will have the
second person. So I want to make sure that you
are all dialed in, tuned in for that special special
announcement of the two of the ten inductees that will
(03:15):
be joining. For those that are wondering, the ten member
ten member student athletes will be inducted into the Texas Athletics.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Hall of Arnor.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
There are ten individuals that will be recognized of the
class of twenty twenty five and an induction ceremony that
will take place Friday, September twelfth.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
The ceremony will start at seven.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
It will be an LBJ Auditorium and Conference Center on
UT campus. The tickets for general emission are twenty five dollars.
All you have to do is get over to Texas
Lunghorns dot com and you will get an opportunity to
buy some tickets so you can go and be in
front of this event. I've been to three inductees. I've
(04:05):
been invited to all three because I've had some friends
that were inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor. It's
a great ceremony, so much fun, and these people get
recognized for their achievements on the forty acres while they
were at the University of Texas, and of course they
did some things after they left. But I think it's
pretty dog gone cool that Texas will have this ceremony
(04:30):
coming up September the twelfth, speaking of lifetime Longhorns and
being able to achieve certain things. I'm interested in this
because Marcus and I were having a conversation about this earlier.
And in life, people love to build you up to
tear you down. We've seen it happen multiple times in
(04:52):
so many different areas, especially when it comes to sports. Now,
the one thing that I always had have a tough
time with is when people are good at what they do,
people try to find the negative in it. Oh, he's
too cocky. Oh, he's this or she's that or whatever.
(05:16):
They always try to find that negative condenptation in which
they try to stay at you. And right now people
are looking at Scottie Scheffler and really talking about who
Scotty Scheffler is, who's his demeanor. He is the best
(05:38):
golfer in the world at this time. The most drama
that he's had is he got arrested at a golf
tournament for accidentally driving through a place where there was
something going on and the guy didn't know who he was,
and he got arrested, got a mugshot, all these different things,
(06:02):
and that is probably the extent of Scottie Scheffler's off
the Phil Shenanigans. I guess you would say, but I
want you to listen to former Texas Longhorn Jordan Speed.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
We played this for you on Monday. I believe it was,
but I wanted to play it again because I'm a
little disappointed in the fact that people are now attacking
Scotty Scheffler because he doesn't create any drama.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
He doesn't care to be a superstar. He's not transcending
the game like Tiger did. He's not bringing it to
non golf audience necessarily, he doesn't want to go do
you know the stuff that you know a lot of
us go do corporately anything like that. He's he just
wants to get away from the game and separate the
two because I know that he, you know, at one
(06:56):
time felt he was too much. He's taking it with
him and whenever he made that switch, I don't know
when it was, but you know, to have his hobbies,
you know, he's he's he's always with his family.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
You know, they're always doing stuff.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
So I think it's more so the difference in personality
from any other superstar that you've seen in the modern
era and maybe any sport.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
I don't think anybody's like him.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I don't think anybody's like him. Is a great way
of summing it up. But is that a problem.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
No, no, no, it's not a problem at all. It's
it's it's actually refreshing. Yeah, it's basically like I said earlier.
Well I didn't say it, y'all, didn't hear me said?
But he has a lunch pale mentality. He just comes
to work, does his job, and he does his job well.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah, And and the thing about it for me is
what happened to having a role model that actually cares
about his family, that actually cares about time that he
spends with the loved ones that he wants to be around.
So Scotty Scheffler is one of the best golfers in
(08:09):
the world. Everybody wanted Tiger Woods, Tiger Tiger, Tiger, Tiger Tiger.
You saw what happened to Tiger Tiger fell apart.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Yes, his life changed so much.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
In the public eye because everybody wanted to tear him
down when they found out he wasn't quote unquote the
guy that they.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Thought he was.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Yeah, he wasn't clean cut like everybody thought.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Now you have a guy in Scotty Scheffler that told
you that things are bigger to him than just golf.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
He just happens to be.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
Really good at it, like really good, the best of
the best of the best.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
He's building at ut Golf Club, He's helping do things.
He's a good person, and I firmly believe that that
situation where he got arrested really got into his mind.
Like he's because he's got pictures, right, you got visions. Yeah,
(09:16):
it wasn't hard time. He didn't spend a lot of
time in there. It was the fact of the matter
that he was in a bad place that he had
zero control over. It wasn't his fault. It was in
a sense, but it wasn't his fault because they didn't
(09:37):
realize what he was doing. They thought he was obstructing something. Okay,
did he realize what was going on? That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (09:44):
And that's the part that we just don't discuss enough,
is that was a situation in which he didn't know
what was going on and he was arrested.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
He was all he was trying to do was get
to the golf. He basically trying to get to work,
trying to get to work, and now all of a
sudden people are questioning I heard our guy, Colin cow heard.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
I heard him yesterday talking about, Eh, he just.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Doesn't move the needle, Like what needle do you need
to have moved?
Speaker 6 (10:15):
When you can?
Speaker 1 (10:16):
All you need to talk about was how he just
won the golf tournament by seven shots.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
He won it. It was boring because he was that good.
Speaker 5 (10:26):
It was boring because he was upseven shots exactly.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
So why is it that now we are looking at
a guy, as I said, that is at the very
top of his game, and yet people want to question.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Eh, he's not that exciting. He's not that excitable.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Well, when people went to Live, y'all went crazy.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
You were losing your mind about Live.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Now, Scottie playing at an all time epic pace right
now is the face of golf, and y'all are mad.
I thought golf was supposed to be one of those
quiet sports.
Speaker 5 (11:08):
I thought golf, you're supposed to get the little cloud
and keep it moving. Yeah, back in the days, golf
was supposed to be the sport. Did everybody say the
guys were born exactly?
Speaker 1 (11:18):
And now we're penalizing the guy for being good at
his job and not causing drama off the course. Come on, man,
let's be better America.
Speaker 7 (11:26):
Come on.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Coming up next, I gotta go to Oxnar, California. Jerry
Jones said his piece, and now Trey Von Diggs and
Michael Parsons says, there's we're just getting started on an
epic day here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning
(11:49):
kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Mike Harballhart, our guy Marcus behind the board. The world's
strongest man is taking a day traveling to see some family,
so he'll be back on with us tomorrow as always,
and then I'll be on vacation starting Friday, so enjoy yourself.
(12:09):
We got Eric Henry of Horns two four seven that
will be joining and sitting in for me with our
guy Mark Henry and of course Marcus and coming up
in the next segment, we'll have Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman talking all things Texas Longhorns. And make
sure you tune in at eight o'clock in eight seventeen
(12:32):
as we have two of the newest members of the
Texas Athletics Hall of Honor group. They've found out that
they were going in and then the announcement for every
one of them will happen at ten a m. So
make sure you tuned in for that as well. Exciting
times on the forty Acres and I guarantee you you're
(12:54):
gonna be real excited to talk to these two former Texas.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Longhorns life Longhorns.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Right now, I want to go out to Oxnard, California,
and the conversations the other day was Jerry Jones being
disrespectful to some of his high priced players. Two of
them have already gotten paid Dak and Trayvon Diggs and
Micah Parsons is working to get his money. But Micah
(13:24):
came to practice and doing the whole end thing because
he's not actually.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Practicing with the team.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
He dressed out first day, got himself ready, but then
he decided it was time to stand on the side
kind of watch and check on what's going on because
he is in the middle of a contract negotiation. Jerry
doesn't want to talk to anybody. Steven is just running
off at the mouth. This whole thing is getting on
my nerves because we never seem to get people paid
(13:54):
at the right time. But here's Micah Parsons on Jerry
Jones' comments the other day for each other.
Speaker 8 (14:00):
But stuff gets set in the media.
Speaker 9 (14:02):
Have you had a conversation with the nowts this process.
Speaker 10 (14:05):
No, But I'm gonna I'm gonna talk team.
Speaker 11 (14:07):
You know, I just thought as a whole, like, you know,
everyone's situation is.
Speaker 12 (14:12):
Different with you, you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
At the end of the day, like, I'm.
Speaker 10 (14:16):
Here for my teammates.
Speaker 12 (14:16):
You know, I'm not here to please another girl. Man,
I'm here for.
Speaker 11 (14:20):
Them, you know, I want to be here with Chay
watching rehab, watching me on the field, watch his growth.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
I want to be here bat only chance.
Speaker 12 (14:26):
Still like I'm here for these guys, I'm not.
Speaker 11 (14:29):
Here for him, you know, So I think, you know,
I think at the end of the day, he's on.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
The field with us.
Speaker 11 (14:34):
You know, we're on the field, playing the games and
things like that. So I'm gonna just control my teammates,
keep boosting.
Speaker 10 (14:39):
It and uh, you know, we just want to keep
playing together.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
And and that's how you're supposed to go. That's how
you're supposed to do it. And Micah's doing things the
right way. But the thing about it is to me
is I've said it before and I'm to continue to
say it. Why is it that Jerry finds a way
to not these guys paid? Why is it that Jerry
(15:03):
creates this drama?
Speaker 2 (15:05):
I understand, but it's.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Getting old for you to always think that this is, uh,
we're gonna be talking, We're gonna be talked about in
the media the whole time.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
It gets tiring. Be professional. You think he's doing this
on purpose every time.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Every year, it's about this time, your cowboys are going
to be in the conversation regardless if you create drama, Jerry,
because everybody again, you won all the Super.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Bowls, everybody was on the top of the world. They
hated you, they loved you.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Now they just think you are a punching bag for punchlines.
Speaker 5 (15:39):
But still you You're gonna be in the media regardless,
because you are the Cowboys exactly.
Speaker 6 (15:45):
So.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Now Michael Parsons talks about.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
How there's not very much movement in his contract negotiations.
Speaker 13 (15:53):
Michael, how would you characterize how close you are to
getting something done?
Speaker 10 (15:58):
A man, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
I don't know.
Speaker 10 (16:02):
We'll see, We'll just see how long things take, you know. Yeah,
I see like you've got discouraged by the fact that
it's taking a long honestly.
Speaker 11 (16:11):
Yeah, when you go around the league and you see
these other teams taking care of their best guys, I
see TJ got taken care of, you know, Max got
taken care of, Miles got taken care of when he
got two years lest.
Speaker 14 (16:22):
In his deal.
Speaker 10 (16:23):
So it's hard to Yeah, you see a lot.
Speaker 12 (16:26):
Of people around me and taken care of.
Speaker 11 (16:27):
You don't know, I wish you had something like you know,
that same type of energy.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
You know, it's hard to not take it personally.
Speaker 10 (16:35):
I wouldn't say it's hard not to take a personally
when you.
Speaker 11 (16:37):
Know how there's a whin, there's a you know, chain
of events, if something consistently happening over the course of years,
when you kind of see it before through other players
and things, so you.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Don't take that person.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
You don't take a person when.
Speaker 11 (16:49):
You're like, all right, it's not like I'm getting treated
differently than anyone else, you know, So I don't take
it person I just I just don't understand.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
I really like the way mya is taking this thought
process right. I love the way that he is being
the professional one in these conversations. I do like the
fact that he is standing side by side with one
Trayvon Diggs, who, by the way, shots fired he got
(17:23):
him too. And we'll hear more from Trayvon about his situation.
But here's Trayvon talking about how he believes that Micah
is doing the right thing and he's handling things the
right way leadership.
Speaker 15 (17:37):
It shows he wants to be here. You know, he
clearly wants to be here. I've done him ever since
he came.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
In his work ard.
Speaker 15 (17:42):
He's earned everything, he's earned, every dollar's performed on the.
Speaker 14 (17:45):
Field, on the show.
Speaker 15 (17:47):
It's just you know, I think, you know, it's time
to get him done. Now, make sure we can keep
this thing together and you know, like you said, it's
the nature of the business, but you never know. So
you know, hopefully we keep everything together and keep everything tight,
continue and trying to help the team run in.
Speaker 14 (18:01):
The high super Bowl.
Speaker 11 (18:02):
You what's your thoughts, abrosimmunity situation.
Speaker 15 (18:09):
I think he's having a situation really well.
Speaker 12 (18:10):
I don't think he's doing anything that someone.
Speaker 14 (18:13):
Who you know, uh, you know, wants to be paid.
Speaker 15 (18:16):
You know, everyone has family, everyone has you know, responsibilities.
Speaker 14 (18:19):
Everyone needs to secure their future, and you never know
what's going to happen.
Speaker 15 (18:22):
So you don't want to go out there and risk
injury or something and your your family is not securing of, family,
is not taking care of So you know, I understand that.
Speaker 14 (18:29):
You know, I see where he's coming from.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
That I think he's going to that is another good teammate,
somebody that is handling their business, somebody that rehabbed away
from the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
He wanted to be back.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
He wants to be a Dallas Cowboy, and again we'll
hear from Trayvon Diggs a little bit later.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
But Micah was.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
Talking real greasy when it comes to hey, y'all don't
want me here, let's keep but move roabs want to
get a deal done.
Speaker 11 (19:03):
I mean honestly, you know, uh, you know, for me,
I really don't matter.
Speaker 10 (19:07):
Like I said, I've been pretty consistent.
Speaker 11 (19:09):
If they don't want me to here, they don't want
me here, I'll go around my business. I understand the
nature of the business. Like I said, as long as
I'm hearing an under contract, I'm a dude.
Speaker 10 (19:18):
I have to do to perform at the highest level.
But if this is then, and this is then, you know,
there's there's the same way to Jones.
Speaker 11 (19:24):
J Jones and Stephen Jones and the other j Jones
take care of their family the same way I need
to take.
Speaker 10 (19:29):
Care of my family.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Did I mean?
Speaker 11 (19:30):
I got my own three kids of my own, so
we y'all need to take care of my own family.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
At the end, the gay man, I don't see the
lie at all. I think that was for the fans.
Well you got to the fans, know, yeah, because that
just puts puts it all on Jerry's like dude, I
want to be here, but hey, if y'all don't want
me here, I can just get gone.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
Since since entering the NFL, this is from Pro Football Focus.
Since entering the NFL, Parsons has a ninety four point
three pass rush grade that puts him number two. Since
entering the NFL, Michael Parsons at twenty one to three
(20:12):
percent win rate that puts him at number two. Since
entering the NFL, Michael Parsons nineteen point seven pressure rate.
He is the number seven overall player and the number
two edge rusher by Pro Football Focus. Now, obviously I
(20:40):
always say the numbers can be skewed.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
I'm not a.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Huge fan of Pro Football Focus, but I am a
fan of.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Pro Football Focus.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Some things kind of tells you about who he is
and what he's capable of doing.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
It breaks down, you know basically what a consistent player,
I mean a player does consistently.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Yes, yes, but you start to look at when you
watch the take. You put him in a position to win,
he goes and gives you everything he has. He is relentless,
and he continues to get better and better. And he's
young enough that if you pay him now, you might
(21:28):
get a little bit of something a little bit later.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
If you paid him earlier, you would definitely.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Even be having this we might be renegotiating, but at
least he would have been in a position of success
and the money would have been good enough for him
where he didn't have to do all this stuff.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
Even if you paid him earlier this this off season,
you still would be paying a little number than with
what you're going to be paying him now. Because it's
always the first guy and if the next guy gets
pushed over the you know, the first guy, TJ. Watt
would have had a bigger contract than him if he
would have signed, they would have signed him earlier.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Yeah, it is.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
It is interesting to always try to figure out how
these managers, GMS owners think about their players moving forward.
It's kind of crazy every single time. Somebody that's not
crazy is my guy, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
(22:27):
Texas football is about to start and Danny will be
giving us all his inside right here on the Morning
Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome
back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Make sure you're tuned in.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
At the top of the eight o'clock hour as we
will have a special guest, a Haul of Honor and
Duc Dee at a fifteen I mean at a fifteen
you'll have another one as Texas will make those announcement.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
It's a little bit later today, but.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
I want to be joined by my guy, Danny Davis
of the Austin American Statesman. You can follow him at
Underscore Danny Davis and Danny. We had SEC Media Days
last week. We're back on the grind. That means that
we're closer and closer. As my man Craig Waye loves
to say, now we see the mile markers and the
goldposts of where we're.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
About to be.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
But what was your biggest takeaway from SEC Media Days.
Speaker 16 (23:31):
I don't know if that's a really huge takeaway from
the Texas side of it. You know, we've gotten to
know Michael and Anthony pretty well over the past couple
of years. Obviously, Arch was kind of the star of
the show and listening there of everyone's attention. If you
were anywhere online, you saw the pictures of the scrum
he had to.
Speaker 6 (23:47):
Face, So that was that was a little net. But
we've gotten to know.
Speaker 16 (23:49):
Arch a little bit over the last couple of years,
and all three of those young men are just really polished,
their fine representatives of this university. If you're a fan
of the long run, you should love with those three
or your leaders and.
Speaker 6 (24:02):
Your representatives on.
Speaker 16 (24:04):
You know, throughout the week there are a couple instances
or other teams or other players and they said something
that was both bulletin board material quote unquote, and I
just didn't have one with Texas. Texas does a good
job of polishing those guys and you know, training them
and giving them reps. So I don't I don't really
think there's much from the Texas side of it. I
think everything dose guys said we kind of heard before.
(24:25):
But if you wanted to see how Arch with a
handle the pressure of a couple hundred reporters asking him
about his uncles, you got to see that this week.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Yeah, I thought it was I thought it was cool
the way he kind of handled himself in the way
kind of maneuvered. And to your point, you know, you
can tell like Anthony Hill Junior, obviously, Michael taff Is
mondays with Mookie, you know, we have those moments with him,
but getting a chance to talk to Arch, and it
seems like Arch is going to be a mainstay on
(24:56):
those Monday player availabilities.
Speaker 6 (25:00):
I would think you better be. He is the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
You better be, they say, But watching watching all the
other people kind of look at what Texas brings to it.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
We talk about it all the time.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
Last year when we were at SEC Media Days in Dallas,
every it kind of emptied after Texas left. And again
it happened again because Eli Drinkwitz said, I appreciate all
fourteen of y'all showing up for this pressor today.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
You get that Texas.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
Is the main stay and the main ingredient to this conversation.
But Kirby Smart, Kirby Smart is still that team and
coaching that team that seems to have that kryptonite when
it comes to the Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 16 (25:48):
Well, I left after Tuesday as well, saying whatever, I'm
coming on home. But yeah, I mean Tuesday was kind
of I mean, that was that was the day. And
then Georgia went on Tuesday as well. Tennas Tennessee was
our two. I guess Auburn was the fourth wheel or whatever.
But you know, you kind of had three big time
programs going on Tuesday, But yeah, this is still Georgia's conference.
(26:11):
I mean, Texas, there's obviously a lot of interest in Texas.
Texas media travels really well. That brings a lot of
you know that ps, a lot of seats. But this
is until someone knocks up Georgia. You know, this is
George's running the show in Texas. Found that out last year.
That's the bar that Texas is trying to reach. The
Longhorns know that that's not a controversial statement he's saying that.
But you know, Georgia is the standing in this conference,
(26:32):
and you know, I guess Tuesday was the day of
one needed to be there in Georgia and Texas.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
We're speaking, Yeah, we're talking to Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman. You can follow him at Underscore. Danny
Davis and I ask everybody this because obviously we know
the quarterback position, the linebacker position is solidified. But what
are some of the things that you're going to be
looking into as camp gets ready to start suite?
Speaker 16 (27:02):
I think that's the question in the running back room.
I mean, there's there's talent back there, but you know,
c did back's just coming up. An injury can contravean
you know, match what he did last year. And some
of those new guys, as there's younger running backs, what
exacutly do they look to Jared Gibson make the next step?
Speaker 6 (27:17):
Et cetera, et cetera.
Speaker 16 (27:19):
Obviously the receiver room, there's talent there, but you know
this is the receiver room that's lost its top three
pass catchers. I'm not sure if you want to if
you want to include Gunner Heelm in that mix. So
what is on that look with some of those younger
guys Ryan Wino Doandrea more making the.
Speaker 6 (27:32):
Next step on that?
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Uh?
Speaker 16 (27:34):
Like that kid from Cala transferred over to how seamless
is he fit in? Because time is a really important position.
And the seeds offense, and then obviously the offensive line.
I mean you lost four starters to the NFL. I
mean that's I don't care how much talent you have
behind them. In Texas does a good job of developing,
it's often the line that what does that line look?
The new look offensive line look? So obviously a lot
(27:55):
of questions on offense, I think defensively fine, regardless of
who you have to replace, But it's still Texas despite
how many you know, teams are, how many people going
to rank them number one, number two. They have a
lot of question marks, a lot of people that you're replaced.
So we're going to figure that out throughout August, and
you know that'd be a pretty big test for those
new starters at the end of August.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
I wanted to ask you too, because you know, Stark
made the statement at the Texas High School Coaches Association
about nineteen of the twenty three recent draft picks in
the last two seasons all played Texas high school football,
and I took a step back because I had to
think about it, and I was like, Wow, that's a bold,
(28:38):
bold statement, and that's far cry from where you thought
that Texas was before, because if you think about all
their recruiting now, they're universal, they're all over the country.
And now you think about those nineteen of twenty three
draft picks, did you find that kind of intriguing or
did you know that already?
Speaker 16 (28:59):
I mean, I know that is that number, but I
don't think that's necessarily a surprise. I mean, you do
the math. That's three, four or five years ago. So
at the beginning of Steve's tenure ended the Tom Herman tenure,
so you kind of see what those recruiting strategies were. Probably,
you know, Steve was probably a little bit more local,
you know, starting off just coming in and trying to
get some most Texas kids in state. But you know,
(29:20):
we'll see what that number is in you know, three
four years once, you know, Steve has been here a
little bit more and he's recruiting a lot more nationally.
I mean, Texas is always going to produce talent, and
Texas is always going to be in play for the
best talent in Texas. So you know, telling me that
they have a bunch of guys from the state of
Texas that you know ended up in the NFL, it
shouldn't be surprising. That should be the way it is.
(29:42):
Texas should keep the best talent in state, and Texas
A and M should be in play for that those
talented kids as well. And you know, if Texas wants
to tend it's all's going to need to up its
national kids.
Speaker 6 (29:53):
It's in the NFL as well.
Speaker 16 (29:54):
But you know, Steve also knows how to play the
hits in front of Texas high school football coaches and
I'm sure that played really well well in the room
when he said that a couple of days ago.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Well, it's interesting that you say that, because I too
have been pounding the table for the best players should
be playing in the state of Texas. And now that
we're seeing that a little bit more and more prevalent
with the recruiting of Texas A and M and how
they've kind of stepped it up, Texas Tech financially is
number two behind Texas in the revenue part of it
(30:25):
and valuation part of it. It's gonna be a pretty
fun year, to say the least. We're not that far
away from it. Danny, you start next week. Have you
been stretching and getting them walking shoes ready?
Speaker 6 (30:39):
I've been crying at night. Summer's over.
Speaker 16 (30:42):
But you know, we as as many people know, and
anyone who's watching or listening, there's becoming no sympathy for us.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
We have a we have a great job.
Speaker 16 (30:51):
It's tiring, you know, it can be kind of long,
and you know, no one, no one loves to be outside.
I'm just hoping for morning practices, but none of this
afternoon afternoon, so I can get a little hot and
hot and toasty but if those are minly complaints, I
don't think'm gonna.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
Get in to my sympathy.
Speaker 16 (31:05):
So let's just buckle up, let's get to it, and
I may just not have a little bit less free
time over the next over the next few months.
Speaker 6 (31:12):
But it's it's often's all good.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Well, the beautiful thing about it all.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
We were covering a team that seems to be pretty
dog on good and we've been on the other side
where it hadn't been this much fun. So I'm looking
forward to it. And of course you're gonna be writing
about arch Manning, so we'll see how that plays out.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
As always, Danny, thank you.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Make sure you follow Danny at Underscore, Danny Davis on
social media.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
Ye'll need to get someone with hair on here.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
I'm coming up to.
Speaker 6 (31:39):
This is a this is a low ridiculous I'll wear.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
My wig next time, bro, Take it easy, coming up flex.
We were talking about Arch. Now we're gonna hear it
from Arch arch Manning with more of those rapid fire
questions and oh yeah, we got to give a shout
out to one of the legends that lost his life
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and
(32:02):
thirteen hundred the zign no no no, Chipper Jones is
not joining the show. I know everybody gets excited when
they hear that, because that is Chipper Jones walk up music.
But that is the legendary Ozzy Osbourne who passed away yesterday,
and that is who Mark should have thought bit the
(32:27):
head off the bat, but he was thinking it was
Alice Cooper. He was he was one of the best,
and you never knew what he was saying on his
show because he was just that out of control. But
Ozzy Osbourne was one of the best out there, so
special shout out to him and our RP to his
(32:48):
family who are dealing with what most people are dealing
with the sadness of losing one Ozzy Osbourne.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
But right now I.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
Want to give you an opportunity to win a pair
of tickets to go see Coheben Cambria September the ninth
at the Moody Center. All you got to do is
get over to that iHeartRadio app, tap that red microphone
and leave the word father Father is your word of
the day. To win a pair of tickets to go
(33:21):
see Coheb and Cambria November September the ninth and the
key word is father and it will be at the
Moody Center. Also coming up at the top of the hour,
we'll make our first announcement of who will be part
of a ten member class of the Texas Hall Texas
(33:43):
Athletics Hall of Honor. We will have two of them
on today. Ten o'clock I mean, excuse me. Ten o'clock
will be the announcement of all of the members of
the twenty twenty five class that will take place September
the twelfth. You can get tickets at Texas Longhorns dot
com General Emission twenty five dollars per person. It will
(34:06):
be at the LBJ Auditorium and Conference Center September the twelfth,
starting at seven pm. Make sure you tune in. You
don't want to miss it. But right now, I want
you to hear from arch Manning. Arch Manning gets asked
a lot of questions and and people want to know
the rapid fire type of questions. And I thought this
(34:27):
was pretty cool listening to Arch give his answers.
Speaker 8 (34:30):
I'm March Manning, and this is rapid recall. And what's
one place on your buffet list? A Mulfi coast? And
then look fire.
Speaker 6 (34:36):
What's your favorite past time?
Speaker 8 (34:37):
I would say, like a few weeks ago, scroll on
my phone, but I'm trying to get rid of that.
Play golf. You get one limited one thing, what would
it be?
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Red Bull?
Speaker 8 (34:45):
What's your biggest football? At the tips by the.
Speaker 6 (34:48):
D Lineman, I've got to live in a different country
for a year. Which one would you choose?
Speaker 8 (34:51):
Bahamas Favorite movie? Mile American favorite actor. Matthew mcconna acts Stark.
Speaker 16 (34:57):
Sorry, it's my dog favorite sport side of the the.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Best one.
Speaker 8 (35:04):
Or if you're the worst at soccer?
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Yeah, the sport you're the worst at soccer. He said
that quick.
Speaker 5 (35:10):
He might need to get in contact with Mark about
the Bahamas.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
Yeah, I'm sure Mark will find a way to get
him there. So it is definitely one of those situations
where you start to understand that this guy is just
like everybody else. I know, everybody wants to put him
up on this pedestal that we talked about before, But
this is a guy that likes to have a good time.
(35:35):
He loves his teammates, has fun, understands the role that
he has and really enjoys the personality of being the
quarterback at the University of Texas. I know that everyone
is trying their best to try to say, all right,
this is what we're gonna do, this is how he's
gonna go about it. But you still have to make
(35:56):
sure that he goes out and handles his business. So
for me listening to him, listening to his engagement that personality.
If you go back and watch some of those videos,
you can also go back and listen to the audio
of myself and check out the video of myself and
Arch Manning along with Anthony Hill. It was a pretty
(36:18):
interesting and entertaining conversation and you got a chance to
see both of those young men's personalities.
Speaker 5 (36:24):
And you can also check out they fly fits.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Oh yeah, Oh, Anthony was clean. People kept giving Arch
a hard time saying he looked like he was at
a fraternity meeting, but Anthony was looking smooth. Michael taff
with the tie with all the kids that passed away
at camp missed it and giving his honor to them.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
These are as Danny said just a little bit ago.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
If you missed our interview with Danny Davis, make sure
you check it out and all the interviews on the
podcast page wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
But it's always free on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
You start to understand that the representation the conversation, and
this is something that Mark and I have talked about
and you've even mentioned it. You start to understand that
these guys take over the personality of the head coach. Yes,
it is so important that you understand that your messaging
(37:19):
is getting across to them.
Speaker 5 (37:21):
It's as if like these the whole time when they're
young at UT they're learning how to deal with media
before they have to deal with mediause. These guys were
ready when they first jumped on the scene last year
with Simmons and Hill, this year with Arts, They're ready
when they jump in the scene when they deal with media,
they seem to know what to do.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
Yeah, they're locked in and they do a great job
over there. John Bianco, Thomas Stepp and all the people
that are involved with these players. Grace, she's done a
great job with them since she's been on the university,
been on the campus. It's been a good turn of
events for this Texas football team. And again, as I
(38:05):
talked to Danny Davis about just a minute ago, you
start to look at this team and this university as
it has flipped again. You look at what baseball, volleyball, basketball, softball,
track and field, swimming and diving, golf, rowing. You start
looking from top to bottom. This university is in a
(38:28):
great place, and you start to look at Chris Bianca,
I mean Chris Bianca, Chris del Kante him too, Yeah,
Jahan Baca leading the way with these players. But Chris
del Conti what he's been able to do for this
university and where these coaches all have the focus of
(38:48):
being great. Speaking of being great, you don't become a
Hall of Honor member without being great. And coming up next,
we have our first guest of the Hall of Honor.
You do not want to miss it. Our number two
is just around the corner right here on the morning
kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome
(39:11):
back to the morning kickoff right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone and our number one. We
talked to Michael Parsons and Jerry Jones. We also heard
from Danny Davis in arch Manning. There's a special ceremony
that will be taking place where its ten member class
will be inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor and
(39:32):
one of the guests is joining me right now.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
She was a four time All.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
American a twoenty twelve national champion at the University of Texas.
She is currently the head coach at the Kent State
Golden Flashes, and she is one of the newest members
of the twenty twenty five Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor.
It is my good friend, Hailey Eckerman. Good morning, Haley.
(39:59):
How are you.
Speaker 9 (40:00):
Good morning?
Speaker 6 (40:01):
I'm good.
Speaker 9 (40:01):
How are you.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm so happy for you.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
I'm excited that you get a chance to be part
of this great class. We don't know all of them.
It will all be announced at ten o'clock. But when
I was asked to do an interview with you, I
couldn't help myself. I'm so excited for you and what
you've been able to achieve since your time at the
University of Texas.
Speaker 9 (40:27):
Thank you. Yeah, I'm super excited and like beyond honored.
Speaker 12 (40:31):
You know, this is kind of that like last kind.
Speaker 9 (40:35):
Of award that you hope for wherever you go to,
whether it's just at a Texas or any university. So
the fact that I get to be a part of
this special award is awesome.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
Well, it's kind of funny because, as I said, you
were four time All American, You were part of the
twenty twelve national championship team. You was also named the
Longhorn Female Athlete of the Year. He was Volleyball Gazine
Player of the Year in twenty twelve and twenty thirteen.
You've been able to achieve so many different things in
(41:07):
your career, top ten in a bunch of statistical categories
at Texas, but now you get a chance to be
immortalized forever, and I think that's pretty dog one cool.
Speaker 9 (41:21):
Yeah, you know, I think going in wherever you when
I'm in that process when I was younger, wanting to
be a part of obviously a special team and to win,
but knowing the importance of being a long term legend,
I think is key. And Jared always talked about that,
you know, like the legacy of those that came before you,
(41:41):
and so it's just an honor to be a part
of this special piece of legacy.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
So we're talking to Haley Eckerman.
Speaker 1 (41:48):
She will be part of the ten member class that
will be inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor. The
ceremony will take place Friday, September to twelfth.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
Make sure you get your tickets because.
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Now she's a coach, so now she gets to deliver
a coach's speech when you get a chance to get
up there, talk about what you've been able to take
from your playing days and now encouraging others as a
head coach.
Speaker 12 (42:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (42:18):
You know, we were pushed throughout our whole those four
years when I was at Texas, and I think really
trying to just incorporate those moments into my girls and
get them to understand how to handle adversity as much
as possible. I think my first year was really hard
trying to fix things as a player, and I've had
to learn and kind of figure out in Jared's mind
(42:39):
how he fixed things, and it was tough. I think
my expectations were harder because I was coming from such
a successful program as a player that I had to
get them to get into those habits for them.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
As a player.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Yeah, and I know that you've got a lot of
mentors and a lot of people that you kind of
lean on in those particular moments. But uh, as you said,
it's been a little bit of a different journey for
you being able to go play professionally and now coming
back and trying to give.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
Back, uh to the players that are out there.
Speaker 1 (43:15):
What are some of the biggest challenges that you see
right now, not only in college athletics, but more importantly
with your squad. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (43:26):
I think.
Speaker 9 (43:29):
You know that there's not a ton of the dog mentality,
and I don't know where and when that stops. I
think that's why we were at Texas so successful because we,
you know, just had that dog mentality. So really trying
to instill that into our kids, you know, I think
club has its moments because you know, everybody's paying for
(43:51):
it and it's about fun and all this, and so
then you get kids that are expecting, you know, playing
time and not understanding that they.
Speaker 6 (44:00):
Have to earn it.
Speaker 9 (44:01):
So really just the mindset I think of kids is
so different. And I know it's not in just volleyballs
and other sports too. As I'm talking to coaches and
I think, nil, even though it's a great thing, I
think it can kind of play a role in some
of these conversations that we're having with kids, especially at
the mid major level.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
No doubt.
Speaker 1 (44:21):
So I wanted to ask you this because obviously Jared
Elliott has gone on and done unbelievable things and continues
to help build this program part of what you were
laying the foundation as well. But when you look at this,
this journey of being able to play at the University
of Texas, play for a guy like Jared Elliott, and
(44:45):
now get yourself, like you said, immortalized as a lifetime
Longhorn Hall of Honor inductee. What has Jared kind of
leaned on you and told you when you found out
that you were going in.
Speaker 9 (45:02):
Yeah, So that's it's funny because when I found out,
I got the call from CDC and Chris Blanki and
I was told not to tell anybody. So when I
saw Jared, I was like, I don't know, Pinos, you know,
I don't know. It was kind of this like funny thing.
And I saw him that next day because it's happened
to be in town too, and it was kind of
(45:24):
just like, well, do I say something. I don't want
to be the one to say it if he hasn't,
So I sent him a text out, you know, and said,
I appreciate everything that you've done and I wouldn't be
here in this position doing this honor without you, because
he did push me, but he also gave me the
opportunity to be at Texas. You know, I came in,
I had committed I halfway through my junior year found
(45:47):
out I was pregnant, and some people could have just
given up on me, and he stuck through it with
me the whole time, and he got to see Kayden,
and he'll get to see Kayden again because Kay's gonna
come down to the Hall of Honor. And I think,
you know, for me, that's the biggest pieces that Jared's
been in my life and Caden's life, his whole life,
So just getting to be a part of that, I
(46:09):
think has been huge for me to be able to
thank him. And you know, Cateren gets these opportunities to
see me, you know, walk across the stage and do
all this stuff, and part of that is because of Jared.
Speaker 3 (46:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
Yeah, And I've seen your son a lot and he's
always present. And I think it's really really cool when
kids truly don't understand how good mom or dad really
was and then they get to see these honors that
are being bestowed upon you. So I think that is
pretty pretty awesome as well. So let me ask you this,
(46:42):
because your journey has been a little bit different.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
You've coached at different schools.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
I saw you when you were at Tarleton State and
then you made the move to Kent State. How does
a girl from Waterloo, Iowa make her way to the
University of Texas.
Speaker 9 (47:01):
Yeah, you know, part of it. It was just the culture
that Jarrett had and the fact with the assistant, you know,
Tanya started the recruiting process for me and then she
laughed and then Selima came in. I think that was
a really big piece for me on the diversity that
Jarrett had on his team and the culture and allowing
people to be themselves. So that was part of it.
But I always just wanted to go somewhere where everybody
(47:23):
was winning and there was pride and wearing that jersey
and it wasn't about the name on the back of
your jersey. And Texas really did that for me. You know,
the history again, the legends that I'm coming in behind,
in the law of honor, it's amazing in itself. So
that was really what brought me to the culture piece
of Texas.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
So I'm looking at I'm looking at some of your
accolades and it's kind of crazy when you sit back
and think now, later in your career, you go back
and you look at some of the things that you
were able to do. You were second, you were the
only the second three time Player of the Year recipient
in the Big Twelve. You finished in the top ten
(48:06):
in six categories, including total points four point four two
points per set. And I'm not a big volleyball officiato,
but I'm looking at these numbers and you're pretty good.
Speaker 12 (48:22):
Huh, just a little bit, you know.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (48:28):
That is so awesome. I'm proud of you. I see
what you're doing. I see that you're continuing to spread
the good word. You're giving kids opportunity to change their lives.
And my one question to you is if you were
talking to a kid right now about chasing their dreams,
about the adversity that is going to come in front
of you, what would be your message.
Speaker 9 (48:53):
I think my biggest thing would just be embrace it
and live in the moment. I think, you know, even
kids and nowadays, they're like, oh, I can't wait to
be an adultment It's like, girl, the adult life is
not fun. I wish I didn't have say a bill,
or I wish I didn't. My kids, I always tell
them like I was happy when I didn't have to
buy volleyball shoes, and then that moment I had to
buy them, Like man, But just embrace everything and attack
(49:19):
it and live in that moment and just enjoy it.
I think volleyball is in a special place right now,
with these pro leagues in the States and just the
national speaking that it's getting. I think it's really big
and so really just kind of grabbing it by as
horns and going with it.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 1 (49:41):
I'm so proud of you. Congratulations. You will be inducted
with a great class. We have another Hall of Honor
member coming up next.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
You don't want to miss that.
Speaker 1 (49:53):
But most importantly, I can't wait to see your name
forever mortalized in the Texas Hall Honor. It will happen
September the twelfth, starting at seven o'clock. And I'm just
proud of you and keep going because I know you're
working your behind off to make sure that Kent State
is on the map.
Speaker 2 (50:13):
So keep working hard.
Speaker 1 (50:15):
Thank you, and I appreciate you taking the time and
have a safe flight.
Speaker 12 (50:20):
Thanks.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
Congratulations.
Speaker 1 (50:23):
There she is Hailey Eckerman being inducted into the Texas
Paul of Honor. When we come back, we've got another
lifetime Longhorn and he's getting his just due in that
same class right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred, Liz are welcome.
Speaker 2 (50:42):
Back to the Morning Kickoff.
Speaker 1 (50:44):
Congratulations to one Hailey Eckerman as she will be inducted
into the Texas Hall of Honor September the twelfth. She
won't be going in alone, She'll be going in with
ten new members of the Texas Hall of Honor. And
one of those is joining us right now. Lifetime Longhorn
(51:05):
and a key part of the two thousand and five
national championship team, and now he is currently the Texans
defensive line coach, and now he will be inducted into
that Hall of Honor. He is one Roderick right. We
know him as Rod Right. What's happening to my man? Hey,
how you doing? Appreciate that I'm good. I'm good man.
(51:28):
I'm so excited to talk to you because your career
at the University of Texas is second to none. You
were Big twelve Freshmen of the Year, two time Outstanding
Defensive Lineman Award, freshman All American. You've done so many
great things at the University of Texas, but it was
all capped off with that two thousand and five national
(51:50):
championship team. And I want you to take us back
to that moment of when you guys were in that
locker room getting ready to play usc under all the
way there and then for you guys to finish it
off and be national champions.
Speaker 7 (52:07):
Well, first of all, thank you, thank you for the call,
thank you for the honor. Obviously it can't be done without,
first of all, the faith.
Speaker 3 (52:15):
I have in God, and my family, who.
Speaker 7 (52:20):
Who who supported me, friends, and obviously my teammates.
Speaker 12 (52:25):
Definitely it's hard for d line to get anything if.
Speaker 7 (52:29):
You don't have if you don't have an outstanding offense
and obviously outstanding defense, and special teams and the coaching
staffs and everybody, but basically, man, at the end of
the day, that locker room was was electric. Obviously we knew,
we knew what we had. We knew what we had
going into that season. It was a long time, a
(52:53):
lot of work put in, and I know the moment
of winning it is the ultimate deal, but it was
it was grinding in the summer, getting bonding as a
as a as a locker room, as a staff, and
and putting it all together and achieving that ultimate goal.
(53:15):
And when I think about it, it always sticks out
to me, you know, and coach bond in that uh,
in that moment, he made us promise, made us promising that.
Speaker 3 (53:25):
That wouldn't be the greatest thing that we achieved.
Speaker 7 (53:28):
And I'm still I'm still living and working on that
as we speak, you know, as a as a husband,
as a father, and and then then it is my
current career with the Texans that that's that's my goal
is to is to do good on that promise we
made after that game.
Speaker 1 (53:47):
You know, it's funny that you say that, because that
that clip in the locker room gets a lot of play.
Everybody obviously was talking about what v y and what
he brought to the table and what do you eventually did.
But that clip of Mac Brown talking to you guys
as young men, talking about don't let this be the
(54:07):
greatest thing that you achieve in your life, that kind
of hits home, and especially as someone like yourself who
is now a leader of men himself.
Speaker 7 (54:18):
Yes, absolutely, I mean it really shapes the mentality at
that point, I still talk like that today.
Speaker 3 (54:28):
I don't. I don't no matter what we achieve, we've won.
Speaker 7 (54:32):
We won a lot of ball games here, and let's
not let it stop there. You know, like hopefully one
day I'll be able to say, hey, in the Super Bowl,
after the Super Bowl, man, hey, man, like let's let's
let's let's not let's not let it stop there. You know,
you're still a husband, you're still a father, you're still
a son.
Speaker 3 (54:52):
You still have work to do.
Speaker 7 (54:53):
And I think that that's that's that that that that
hit home because a lot of times this human nature
or man a I achieved, achieved this ultimate task. Now
now I can shut it down. Well sports, you know,
for the guys, the great, the Michael Jordan's of the world,
the Tom Brady's the world. You know, when it comes
(55:13):
to sports, let's go running back to back, Like we
can't just be satisfied with that one ring. Let's go
get another one. And just in life in general, I mean, okay,
you're the best football player ever.
Speaker 3 (55:25):
What's next?
Speaker 7 (55:26):
You know what I'm saying, Like, you still got a
wife and kids waiting on you.
Speaker 3 (55:30):
They don't care if you win to lose. The game.
Speaker 7 (55:32):
Ultimately, they they they they're they're living a life that
you're in charge of as a man of the household.
So that's something that that hit home. That's how it
was raised and on my visit, that's what my parents
and I saw, and that's something that that Coach Brown
and that staff held us, held us accountable to do,
(55:54):
and that's something that shapes the life of a young man.
Speaker 1 (55:58):
We're talking to lifetime Longhorn rod Wright, who is now
a new member of the Texas Hall of Honor.
Speaker 2 (56:06):
It will happen September the twelfth.
Speaker 1 (56:08):
We just talked to Haley Eckerman and she's going in
with you. The full list will be announced at ten
o'clock today, so.
Speaker 2 (56:17):
We're not giving away any more of that.
Speaker 1 (56:19):
But my whole thought process is for you guys to
be able to achieve those types of honors, you had
to be more than just a great football player, as
you said, you had to be more than a great teammate.
You had to be somebody at this university that was
impactful with the way that you went about your business
(56:41):
and listening to you talk, you epitome. You are the
epitome of making sure that it's bigger than just sports.
Speaker 3 (56:50):
Absolutely. I mean, here's deal you, I've learned from leaders.
Speaker 7 (56:56):
So man, one thing that I probe myself on is
I'm not perfect. I'm sure there's a lot of people
that can tell you are experienced when I was not.
And I you know, at the end of the day,
it comes down to learning from mistakes. And you know
when the leaders I've had the Corey Reading to the world,
you know, the Marcus tubs of the world, those guys.
Speaker 6 (57:19):
That that that that.
Speaker 7 (57:21):
Were the leaders before me. And then the guys in
the weight room, you know, the the mad Dogs, the
Tim Crosses, the Donni made like those guys that you
know also installed the mentality in us and we we
that's what it was like, you know. And I'm right now,
my my the guy that works with me on the
(57:42):
D line with detections, it's Frank Okam.
Speaker 3 (57:45):
When he came in, I took it.
Speaker 7 (57:47):
I took it up on myself to uh to mentor
him like Marcus Tubbs and core Reading mentored me.
Speaker 3 (57:54):
Kevin Thornton mentored me.
Speaker 7 (57:56):
So at the end of the day, like they learned
from Casey and Sean and Sean Rogers, and they learned
from sedgick Wood. They learned from those guys, and when
we when the younger guys came in, man, I took
Frank under Mawing, I took Mary Miller, you know Tim
b Right, like all those guys. That's what we knew.
You know what I'm saying. And so at the end
(58:17):
of the day, I'm just doing what I was taught
to do. I was not the greatest leader even then.
You know, it was developed development process. But at the
end of the day, like that's the that's the program
we had is you know, we we learned from those guys.
As a freshman, you come in, you know, like what
do I do? You know, like how do I do this?
But when you see Corey rending in the weight room
(58:39):
working extra, you see him running to the football, you
see him going to class man you you you you
see him preaching to you every day. And then even
after he left, we always joke about this. When we
made it to the national championship, he called me and
congratulated me, and then right after that he literally said, hey, Rod,
tell those guys focused on the.
Speaker 8 (59:02):
Task at hand.
Speaker 7 (59:04):
Like when I heard that, I was like, my god,
that was like and I still I still laugh about that,
but like that's what we had, Like we knew all
those guys that didn't make it that far. We're watching
that game and they were cheering, Uh, their cheering for us,
just like we cheered for those guys today. Like, man,
I remember that that Arizona State game. I'm in a
(59:27):
I'm in a defensive staff meeting. The game was on silent,
but it was on and like at the point, like
at the at the at the point before we won
the game, like everybody's like watching me, Rob, what's gonna happen?
Speaker 3 (59:40):
Of course we pulled it through. We still watch.
Speaker 7 (59:43):
We're still watching these young guys, just like the older
guys were watching us. So man, it's really, uh, it's
really that's what culture is.
Speaker 3 (59:51):
And it's just when it's.
Speaker 7 (59:53):
Your turns that carried it baton, you carry it as
far as you can and you hand it over to
the to that next group of and that's just.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
How it is. And when you're a long right, it
don't matter who the coach is, who the player is.
Speaker 7 (01:00:06):
Man, like these guys that did it before us, Man,
it's our turn to carry it as far as we
can and continue to evolve and continue to take it
to the next level, and that's.
Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
What it's all about. Can't thank you enough for taking
the time. I know that you're a busy, busy man,
but congratulations for your induction into the Texas Longhorn Hall
of Honor. Much deserved and keep spreading that good word.
Speaker 14 (01:00:34):
My man.
Speaker 3 (01:00:35):
Absolutely, absolutely, I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
No problem.
Speaker 1 (01:00:38):
There he is, Rod Right going into the Texas Longhorn
Hall of Honor.
Speaker 2 (01:00:45):
He's not by himself.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
They'll have all the other inductees announced at ten o'clock.
The man oh Man National Champion Rod Right coming up next,
we got a special Hard Knocks Life segment coming up
right around the corner right here on the want to
kick off on score Tradio AM.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
Thirteen hundred Designer.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
All right, I want to get right into this because
doing two things. Number One, thank you to Rod Right.
Thank you to Hailey Ackerman. Two of the newest ten
member class of the Texas Hall of Honor that will
be officially announced at ten am. Make sure you're paying
(01:01:25):
attention to it because if those two are in it,
it's going to be one hell of a class because
that's what they represent. That is what being in the
Hall of Honor is all about. I'm excited for both
of them, Haley representing volleyball and rod Right representing football
(01:01:48):
and much much deserved. All right, let's get right into
the Cowboys because there's a lot of discussion. We talked
about it in Hour one. The Cowboys and Micah Parsons
are kind of out of stand still to continue to
go through this long drawn out negotiation. Jerry talking about
players getting hurt and JJ Watt coming to the players
(01:02:14):
defend defense talking about, Hey, nothing like being thrown under
the bus right away when you're supposed to be out
there fighting for this guy that is throwing you under
the bus because you get hurt. But Schottenheimer is a
guy that we have become fond of. He seems to
(01:02:35):
be a team guy. We had Duce Vaughan on last
week talking about what Shoddy brings to the table. Mark
himself is back on the Cowboys. I'm not gonna call it.
He's back all the way on the bandwagon, but he's
he's looking good for the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (01:02:53):
He's a fan. He's a fan again.
Speaker 5 (01:02:55):
Might be jumping off the bandwagon after this week.
Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
Yeah, well that might be.
Speaker 1 (01:02:59):
A own possibility from what was going on but when
you think about what the Cowboys are trying to do.
Speaker 2 (01:03:06):
And we'll hear from.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
Trayvon Diggs because we're gonna go from a good conversation
where he's talking about the running game and he mentions
quite a few guys and what they're trying to do
during this training camp, and then we will go into
the conversation about you know, Jerry Jones and how he's
(01:03:28):
treating his players. But here's Schottenheimer talking about the Dallas
Cowboy run.
Speaker 13 (01:03:34):
Get The problem with OTAs for a running back is
the game is meant to be played very physically, you know,
so the way you run through the hole is different
when you're wearing pads or you're in a nine on
seventh period than it is when you're running around in
shorts and T shirts and OTAs.
Speaker 2 (01:03:48):
They'll all get reps.
Speaker 13 (01:03:49):
But I will say again, of the two veteran guys,
they both they're very different. You know, Javonte looks great,
Miles looks great. We're excited about Jaden Hunter Lepke. I
always talk about him just with his versatility and what
he can do. And of course there's you know, Deuce,
but that's one of the matchups in one of the
position rooms that we're very excited to watch and see
(01:04:11):
where it develops, not only through practice, but in through
the preseason games.
Speaker 1 (01:04:15):
You gotta be careful, right, you gotta be You gotta
be understandable about what you're gonna ask of those guys
during the practices plus the games and the contact in
which they're gonna go, and how are you going to
be able to judge them during those times. So that's
gonna be something to pay attention to as well, because
(01:04:36):
the weapons are Dak Prescott, Cede Lamb, George Pickens, Ferguson
at tight end, and whoever the number three is going
to be Jalen Brooks and what they bring to the table.
Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
The running game would be an extra part of it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:50):
With Jayden Blue obviously, Miles Sanders looks like he's an
amazing shape, And of course I'm hopeful that our guy
Duce Vaughan will get an opportun unity to be a
part of what the Cowboys are doing moving forward.
Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
But I want you to hear from Trayvon Diggs.
Speaker 1 (01:05:07):
He's not as happy, he's a little disappointed, and of
course Jerry is the reason behind a lot of this.
But I want you to hear Diggs talking about the
injuries and how he's not even thinking about it.
Speaker 15 (01:05:22):
Oh, nobody wants to get injured. It just happened to be. Unfortunately.
Speaker 14 (01:05:25):
I had injuries.
Speaker 15 (01:05:28):
My first three years, and I did everything I was
supposed to to get paid. So I feel like that's
why I got paid because of the things that I
did on the field my first three years. No one's
thinking about, oh, he's gonna get hurt next year, let's
not pay him. No, that's not how things work. You
get paid for the stuff that you do on the field.
You perform your performance, and then that's how you get paid.
And I feel like, you know, it's unfortunately I had
(01:05:48):
a two back to back injuries, but I'm in a
great space positive. I know when I get on the
field what I'm going to do, so I'm not really
worried about that. It's just all about getting back on
the field.
Speaker 14 (01:05:58):
Staying healthy and know once I'm healthy, I'm gonna perform.
Speaker 12 (01:06:01):
Still happy, I'm still happy here.
Speaker 14 (01:06:03):
I'm still happy there.
Speaker 15 (01:06:04):
You know, I got great teammates of my friends, my brothers.
They come, we check on each other, we talk, we ty.
It's a type group, so you know I'm very.
Speaker 1 (01:06:13):
Happy here, and yeah, well here's the thing. You're very
happy there, and rightfully so, because of your teammates. You
never say anything about the ownership, which I don't blame you.
And this is the thing that I've always tried to understand.
It's the chicken before the egg type of deal. Right,
you sit here and you say, well, what you did
(01:06:36):
was water under the bridge. That's what Jerry said, right,
But now I'm trying to get paid for my future
and you're trying to tell me that my past don't matter.
So how is that even possible? And it's a terrible,
terrible negotiation side of it because you have to perform
because you're under contract. You do well, you deserve to
(01:06:56):
get paid. You get a pay raise because you see
the things change. But yet the ownership is talking about,
well you're older now, so I don't want to pay you.
Speaker 5 (01:07:05):
And yeah, they be cutting them pennies, don't they.
Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
That does not make sense and his counterproductive for what
is being done. Well Diggs who did not show up
for the practices, and in the contract it states that
he would be docked his pay even though he may
try to get it back. On another part of it,
and Jerry said the other day, well, got to keep
(01:07:30):
it to the contract. And I don't want people to
set the precedent by thinking that they can stay out
and still get their money.
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
But here's Diggs with Michael Parsons.
Speaker 5 (01:07:42):
Did you expect did you expect the doc and pay?
Speaker 6 (01:07:44):
No?
Speaker 14 (01:07:44):
I didn't expect that.
Speaker 15 (01:07:46):
That kind of that kind of uh, that kind of
hurt my feelings.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
But it's okay.
Speaker 15 (01:07:50):
Hopefully I'll make it back in a sensus and we
understand where he's coming from.
Speaker 11 (01:07:54):
His brother just got clearting towards ACL maybe came back
six months brief, four months early.
Speaker 14 (01:07:59):
Yeah, over out to me.
Speaker 6 (01:08:00):
You know, I went over there with him.
Speaker 10 (01:08:01):
They got some of the best recovery.
Speaker 3 (01:08:03):
You ain't came to check.
Speaker 15 (01:08:04):
On me, can't to check with make sure I was
doing all supposed.
Speaker 10 (01:08:06):
At the end of the day, this is his business.
Speaker 11 (01:08:08):
His body is his body equity. You gotta feel like
he got to do what's best for his body. And like, oh,
because at the end of the day, if he's not available,
what they're gonna do get rid of him, you know
what I mean? So you gotta keep his body up.
Speaker 5 (01:08:19):
The park were the Jerry comments hurtful yesterday.
Speaker 11 (01:08:23):
I think, you know, I just put it like this.
I wouldn't say they were hurtful. I would just say
that like that, we are going to take care you know,
each other, you know, and I think overall, like I
want to take care of him in the same way
I want to go out there and play for Jerry Jones.
Speaker 14 (01:08:38):
It's just how I feel like.
Speaker 10 (01:08:40):
I feel like that's how.
Speaker 11 (01:08:41):
We should look at each other, you know, like we're
all here, like there is no difference between us.
Speaker 10 (01:08:45):
Dringt question your leadership, yeah, saying I need you here?
Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
How did you take those comments?
Speaker 15 (01:08:50):
I feel like you know me. I'm not personally I'm
not even a vocal leader. Like I'm not gonna be
screaming at Goud. I'm not gonna be young at guys.
How I'm a leader is what I do on to feel,
how I perform in the feel the things that doing, practice,
practice hard, working hard.
Speaker 10 (01:09:02):
So that's not that's how.
Speaker 14 (01:09:03):
I lead them my way. I'm gonna lead them my way.
Speaker 2 (01:09:05):
I'm continuing to lead them my way. I'm not gonna
change who I am.
Speaker 15 (01:09:07):
I'm not gonna change and start talking and being a
vocal guy like that's just not me. That's not who
I am. But I will lead in different ways and
I feel like I do that. You know, I feel
like you know. The things I do in the feel
the things I do in practice shows enough.
Speaker 1 (01:09:21):
I can't agree more. You show up and you play,
you get things done. And that's exactly what they've been
able to do. So when you start to look at
this Dallas Cowboy team, what they've been up against, what
they have to deal with throughout these moments, you start
to understand that, Hey, Jerry, I get it. Love what
(01:09:43):
you love to do, be that person and want to
be in the spotlight. But your players showing up, showing
good faith to one another has now shown in a
light to where you, Garry Jones are under the microscope.
Speaker 5 (01:10:03):
With Jerry's creating an atmosphere in which his players are
not with him he's creating, especially with those comments yesterday
about he threw like pretty much everybody under the bus Parsons,
he threw everybody an injury, Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Everyone has had it. Not even that because Parsons wasn't hurting.
He threw him on under the bus too. Yep. With
that same statement about injuries, well.
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
Micah did miss a couple games last year, but it
wasn't in the place of not being able to perform.
They were trying to hold him out. But now the
Cowboys are putting it to where the fan base. The
fan base is upset, Yeah, that upset with Jerry Jones
(01:10:46):
and how and when we talked about this before, the
only way you can affect Jerry Jones is.
Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
To hurt him in his pocket book.
Speaker 1 (01:10:55):
And how do you do that? Not showing up for
training camp? How do you do that? Not buying those
tickets to those preseason games that they want you to
be at that they keep robbing us for. Is that
something that you want to look at? I think not.
I think as a as a Cowboy fan, and again
(01:11:16):
I am here, I am going to be there. I'm
a fan of it all. But the fact of the
matter is Jerry makes it hard on all of us
to continue to sit in the mirror every Saturday, I
mean every Sunday, put on that makeup, put that red
nose with the red curly hair.
Speaker 2 (01:11:38):
And be a part of the clown show.
Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
It's very, very difficult for me to continue to sit
here and support. Now people can say, well, Jerry knows
what he's doing.
Speaker 2 (01:11:50):
No, he doesn't. It's been proven.
Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
Why are you waiting so long to lock up your
key players? If you look at what Philadelphia has been
able to do, and I'm gonna keep going back to
Philadelphia because they're giving us the blueprint. They have done it.
They have done amazing things. They have created an atmosphere
of winning. They've gone to the Super Bowl, They've gone
(01:12:18):
to the Championship Game.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
They have done it all multiple times.
Speaker 1 (01:12:23):
Put yourself in a position of success now, and that
is staying ahead of what the current atmosphere is in
paying these players. Yet Jerry wants to wait around and
see what can happen. Not the right idea, Jerry, Not
(01:12:46):
the right idea. Coming up next, we're gonna close up
the show and send you to Dan Patrick. But the
Round Rock Express have a very very special event that
is happening this weekend and I think you're gonna enjoy it.
I was gonna be a part of it, but I'm
out of town. We'll talk about it right here on
the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
(01:13:10):
Welcome back to the morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:13:13):
And thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 1 (01:13:16):
Mike Harball Haars and of course we've got our guy.
Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
Marcus behind the boards.
Speaker 1 (01:13:20):
Mark Henry is on the road, but he will be
back with us tomorrow bringing it to you. I will
be going on vacation after tomorrow's show. Eric Henry of
Horns two four seven will be joining the show with
Mark Henry. He'll be driving the bus. He will also
be with us tomorrow as well, because that's his weekly segment.
Speaker 2 (01:13:44):
We also want.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
To thank Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. We
want to thank Hailey Eckerman of the Hall of Honor
for the Texas Hall of Honor. She will be inducted
into that on September the twelfth, as will Rod Wright,
former Texas defensive lineman who is now coaching with the
(01:14:06):
Houston Texans.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
Haley is the head coach of the.
Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Kent State Golden Flashes. As she now has been able
to transform and give back to the.
Speaker 2 (01:14:18):
Community in what she serves.
Speaker 1 (01:14:21):
I want to get into this conversation because it is
important to understand that the Round Rock Express do some
really cool things.
Speaker 2 (01:14:31):
They just had the AUSL.
Speaker 1 (01:14:34):
