(02:17):
not talking NBA, not talking WNBA, I'm talking University of Texas.
As we already know, University of Texas basketball will be
headed to Maui and playing in the Southwest Maui Invitational.
That one is during the last week of November. Well,
(02:38):
the news came out yesterday that Texas Basketball will be
participating in the first annual Dick Vital Invitational. Dick Vitel,
obviously a long term, long term legend on ESPN, has
done an unbelievable job through his his struggles with his
(03:02):
throat cancer and still trying to find a way to
fight through it. Well, Texas will be playing guess who
Duke Blue Devils. No Cooper flag, but you get a
chance to see the new look Texas Longhorns versus the
program that's been established the most, the Duke Blue Devils.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Hey, listen, Goose Miller is not dodging the smoke. No,
he's not not at all. Like, listen, I'm going to start.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
You might as well play Connecticut like you play the Dogs. Yeah,
I mean you can go downhill from there, you can
go up from there. He's betting on hisself.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, this is one of those those series that Texas
has been a part of.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
For quite some time.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
It'll be on ESPN obviously when it comes to Dick
Vital But Texas has played Duke five times, this will
be their sixth time, and Texas hasn't beaten Duke. I
mean that that is something that we we look forward
to and it's awesome, baby, But don't you want to
(04:11):
start where you never won before.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
That's that's sitting the tempo. Yeah, and I love it.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I think I'm not Yeah, I'm not going against it,
but I'm just saying this. The facts are the facts.
Texas has not beaten Duke. It's not like they play
each other all the time. As I said, think about
all the years that they've played basketball and this is
only the sixth time.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
That they will be meeting each other.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
But again, you start to look at how this team
is being formed, the roster, the coaching staff that has
been put together, and the expectations moving forward. Obviously, when
when Sean Miller took the head coaching job here at
the University of Texas replacing Rodney Terry RT, you start
(05:00):
to say, Okay, how is.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
This going to play out?
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Obviously Texas is going to be an elite program. They're
in the SEC Now they made the coaching change, coaching changes,
because the whole staff is totally different except for Chris Ogden.
But you start to to try to feel out this
basketball team. You look at all the transfers that they
brought in as well. This is a new look Texas
(05:26):
Longhorn basketball team.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Hard.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I like new, but I like consistent And that's one
of the trademark for coach Miller is his consistency. And
he likes to score. Yeah, and I love defensive coaching,
don't get me wrong. Well, okay, not Thibodeau. I was
just about to Saydau. But offensive coaches, man, they want
(05:53):
to get it up and down the floor. They if
they have a mitchmatch, they want to go to it
and exploit it. And I just believe that that Texas
is going to have a really good season. I mean,
you're starting off with one of the cream of the
crop programs in the history of basketball.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Now you expand on that, and I you know, coach
Miller is going to have all the resources to do
so and uh, and he's got the skill set to
get it done. So I'm excited about the season.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Well, you have some familiar faces in Jordan polpe Kendall Weaver,
who is electric and I can't wait to see him
back on the court healthy in treymond Mark. But then
you got some guys that he's brought in from from Xavier. Xavier,
but also other programs got a big seven footer that
(06:48):
has come in, so they have done some things and
his recruiting is already taken off. I'll get a chance
to see some of the players that he was talking
about here in the next week that he has been
recruiting when we get a chance to go to the TABC.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Tournament in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
I mean, there's going to be coaches everywhere, but there's
also going to be players there. That he said in
the very beginning, we want to be able to recruit
the state of Texas because there are a bunch of
hoopers that are in the state of Texas. And the
number one player in the state of Texas his brother
just happens to be the offensive lineman for the Texas Longhorns,
(07:26):
and that's Austin Gooseby. And he is one of the
elite of the elite players. If you look his name up,
you see that he's a top performer at every tournament
that he's been at from the town of Melissa.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
So Texas is doing their thing.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
They're going to be pushing the envelope as we continue
to move on. But them opening the season against Duke,
you get to know where you are right away.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Right, But man, I love it tests. Yeah, yeah, and
you find out where you're deficient early, so you go
and fix those things.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, it is.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
It is going to be interesting to see basketball at
its finest when it comes to this new look Texas football,
I mean basketball team as they start to to build
the the Sean Miller way, right, you know, you're kind.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Of gonna happen all at once, you know.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
That's That's the one thing I always think about basketball
is people think that, oh man, you you bring in
the best players and automatically you're the best team. You're
you may have some of the best players, but you're
not the best team. You look at what we have
in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers in Oklahoma City Thunder.
Yes they have MVP type players on both teams, but
(08:46):
it's the team play that is making them have success.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah yeah, Well you start to look at all of
these players and how is this going to play out?
And what is Coach Miller's in my Oh, you talked
about it. You want to see a guy that can
come in and score, but he's definitely more on the
defensive end as well. He wants to see guys be
able to play defense ninety four feet. You know, we've
(09:12):
been kind of spoiled when we think about what we
see from Vic Schaefer and his teams and how he
recruits those types of players to get there. But you
start looking at the players that are here, and let's
think about this. They brought a kid in from Duke,
I mean, from Purdue. They brought in the Xavier transfer.
(09:34):
Nick Cody is still here. That's the one that you
really really excited to see about. Matias Booka. Titus is
the one that's seven foot. He's the guy that came
in from Florida Atlantic, Jamie Vincent. There's so many guys
that you look at and you're saying, Okay, how can
(09:55):
we get this figured out? Let's get this figured out.
But will end up seeing how coach develops these players.
Where is the energy gonna come from one? Well, a
spark plug we know is going to be a Kenda Weaver.
He's the guy that you have to have he cut
his hair too. I saw a video the other day.
(10:15):
He ain't cut it like he's not balling. No, he's
not that, but he's low cutting. He ain't got the
high top. So but it's you know, he's doing some things.
He's doing some things so already got the mindset in summertime,
so he wants to get to work.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
So we'll see what ends up happening.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
But yeah, exciting time for this Texas basketball team as
they start to look at how they're gonna build their program.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
What is it going to look like?
Speaker 1 (10:41):
But more importantly, they start the season against one of
the as you say, flagships for basketball, stablemate for the
Duke Blue Devils. That game will be November the fourth
and the first. I think it's the first thing I've
never heard of, the Dicky Vatal Invitational. So we'll see
(11:02):
if it's the first or inaugural or he's been doing
it for years. Gotta do more research. Coming up next,
we're gonna talk n fl OTAs have started today. Nick
Chubb is officially a Texan.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
You heard Mark talk about that.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
But why do the Cowboys always miss out on the
running back?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Cowboys?
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Joe Cook of Inside Texas at seven thirty four, and
we'll talk about the College World Series to wrap up
our number one on a Texas Tuesday edition of The
Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here
on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred the Zone. Coming up,
(11:47):
in the next segment, we will talk to Joe Cook
of Inside Texas seven thirty four. Eight o'clock, we will
have Tim Simms of the Taylor Rodeo Association talking about
an interesting event that they have going on this weekend.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
You do not want to miss that.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
And of course we've got Texas Softball head coach Mike White,
national champion joining us at eight seven.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Team.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
I'm excited to talk to coach White about the success
of this softball team. Right now, let's get into OTA's
twenty four teams will be participating in OTAs that start
today next week. The Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs,
New York Giants, LA Rams, and Seattle Seahawks will have
(12:38):
theirs starting next week. But we will see how this
is all starting to play out. There are some players
that will not be in camp. A lot of players
are going to be missing camp. Terry McLaurin he skipped
mini camp before. He's trying to get a new deal.
And James Cook as well for Buffalo, is going to
be missing out on OTA's because he's looking for a
(13:02):
contract extension. But as of right now, Arizona, Atlanta, Buffalo, Carolina,
Cincinnati just told you twenty four teams are in there.
Cowboys start as well. So it's an exciting time for
a lot of football teams, and the expectations are always high.
When you get ready to go in there, you start
looking at the quarterback position for some of these teams
(13:25):
that are trying to figure out. The good thing is
guys like Quinn Yours will be in camp.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
John A.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Barn all the Texas players that were drafted last year,
so you'll start to hear a lot more from these
younger players and what the expectations are. Brock Perties got
a new deal, cam Ward is the starting quarterback already
for Tennessee. You're still trying to figure out what's going
to happen in New York with Russell Wilson, Jamis Winston
(13:59):
and all the other voices that are there. So it's
gonna be an interesting time for a lot of these
football teams right now, Mark, Listen.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Everybody thinks they have a chance. Right now.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Every team is like, hey man, we got a great season.
Until preseason starts and you realize that you're the same
team you were last year, except for maybe one improvement
or two improvements. There's not many teams that had complete overhauls.
And Cleveland had some overhaul situations. Houston had some overhaul situation.
(14:35):
Jacksonville Jaguars have had overhaul situations. The Cowboys added a
few things, the San Francisco forty nine ers added a
few things, but for the most part, like we got
the NFL the way it was last year.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Do you feel like that? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:53):
I mean the only thing that the quarterback situation in
Pittsburgh and the Jets and the Giants. But that's just one,
you know, like I said, one or two positions, you
know got feel well.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
You have some receivers move, you got some things that
are happening to try to get some chemistry.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
You got Geno that has.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Gone from Seattle to now he's in Las Vegas. He
is an exciting quarterback. They feel like they found something.
You got Pete Carroll coming in as a new head coach,
you've got some change. Schottenheimer being the new coach of
the Dallas Cowboys where they're trying to change, and he
keeps talking about the culture and what the expectations are.
(15:36):
So there is I feel like there's going to be
some valid things that are going to happen in the NFL.
But one of the things that I want to continue
to look at is you start we talk about the
quarterbacks a lot. Chris Sims has his quarterback rankings, others
have theirs as well, but you start looking across the
(15:58):
NFL and Matthew Stafford and Justin Fields, Justin Fields going
to New York to be the Jets quarterback, Matthew Stafford
coming back to LA to be the Rams quarterback, and
Aaron Rodgers being the Steelers quarterback. And I mentioned those
three because there was a report that came out from
(16:19):
Mike Florio that was stating that Aaron Rodgers was the
third choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers were hoping
that Matthew Stafford was going to be free and come
and be their quarterback. But the question was, how did
Justin Fields walk out of the building. If you wanted
(16:40):
Justin Fields to be your starting quarterback. I just don't understand.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
I don't understand that either, especially when they had the
opportunity to try to keep him by playing him more,
you know, at least split it down the middle. He
started with that team, and he wasn't he three and
oh before rested. I think he was know and and
that that was good enough sample size for me as
(17:05):
a consumer, like watching him play made me optimistic about
their success rate because when everything breaks down, he could
always run.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
He did so I thought it was kind of a.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Not Bush league because it's Mike Tomlin and he thought
that he really was going to get more production out
of Russell than than then feels. But I still think
that it was not a great move. You know, I
let him get out of his groove. I mean, you
(17:46):
went three in a row man, you deserve to play
until you lose at least.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Well, just like anything else, you knew that he was
not going He was not supposed to be the starting quarterback,
right I know that you know what it wasn't supposed
to be and Russ was dealing with that injury. I
have more of a question about Arthur Smith not being
able to use Russ to the best of his ability.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
When you have a guy like.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
George Pickens on the outside and you you don't find
a way to get him the ball, and then you
make a move and you you bring in a DK
Metcalf and you let another big.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Time people that's what that's his middle name drops. So
I'm gonna be interested in to see what is the problem.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Like this is where I need to understand who we
are and where we are to make sure that this
is being handled. Look, I'm gonna be following this Pittsburgh
thing more than I have ever right I.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Had to watch, but I want to follow.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
Him too, because there's so much that is out there
about Aaron Rodgers and the enigma of who he is, right, Like,
who is Aaron Rodgers at this point, at this point
in his career. I saw a stat this morning and
it was talking about Aaron Rodgers and the numbers that
(19:10):
he has put up as a starting quarterback, the most passes,
most TD passes in NFL history for a quarterback with
fewer than one hundred and fifty career interceptions. Patrick Mahomes
is at the bottom of this list. It's only four
(19:31):
of people on this list. Pat Mahomes is at two
ninety one, Kirk Cousins is at two ninety three, Russell Wilson,
who they got rid of three hundred and seventy seven.
Aaron Rodgers has five hundred and forty eight touchdowns before
(19:54):
he got to one hundred and fifty career interceptions.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
Wow, that is insane.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
And I know that he's kind of skated back and
he's on the tail end of everything, and I know
that I'm very, very critical of him personality wise. But
if Aaron Rodgers can come into Pittsburgh, Terry Bradshaw already
said he don't want Aaron Rodgers. Well, Terry, you're not
(20:23):
the coach, you're not part of the ownership.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
You did great things.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Is it because you think he's gonna wear number twelve
because they haven't retired number twelve and he's gonna make
number twelve look different? Or is he gonna wear number eight?
But nonetheless, Aaron Rodgers coming into camp, he may have
something on that shoulder.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
I do.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
I'm just here for the drama. I mean, we're gonna
happen there no one hundred. But again you go back
and you look at some of his teammates because I
saw a report a lot of people in New York
wanted him back teammates wise, so obviously he makes ways
with certain people that they feel like, hey, we needed
(21:14):
him back here.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
But now you got justin fields in New York. And
by the way, they open the season against each other.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Oh, come on, the NFL is just stirring the pot. Amen,
he just signed. They didn't know, they had already gave out.
They didn't know.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
They didn't know this so happens, man, It just so
happened to be that way. Coming up next, we're gonna
talk to our guy Joe Cook of Inside Texas and
on three. Got a lot of questions to ask Joe
Cook about recruiting and oh yeah, there's some players that
are now on campus that we need to know about.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Right here.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Oh a Texas Tuesday edition of the Morning Kickoff on
Sports Radio and thirteen hundred's.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
This Tuesday is that time.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Our guy Joe Cook of Inside Texas joins us all
the time every Tuesday to talk all things Longhorns. You
can follow him at Joseph Cook eighty nine. He and
his crew at Inside Texas and on three have done
a great job of tracking the off season movement for
the University of Texas and Joe. I saw an article
(22:25):
yesterday talking about Kenny Baker, the emergence of Kenny Baker.
When he took over the job, a lot of people
were concerned because Bo Davis was Bo Davis and then
all of a sudden, boom, here comes Kenny Baker and
it looks like business has picked up.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 5 (22:46):
Kenny Baker was able to come in last year and
he reaped some of the benefits of what Bo Davis
had done and putting together some defensive line rooms that
included guys like you know, I don't think he brought
out Ford Collins in but made the most of out Collins,
brought in guys like Byron Murphy, brought in guys you know,
even in the transfer portal like Bill Norton and Jermain Loway,
(23:08):
and he reaped the benefits of him and did that
on the recruiting trail.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Now, you know, people.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
Young defensive lineman around the country looked at Texas and
saw Vernon Rotten and Alfred Collins become draft picks. They
saw Bill Norton have a quality career at Texas, and
I thought, okay, the standard has not dropped at.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Texas despite Bo Davis going off to the NFL.
Speaker 5 (23:32):
When you pair that with with Baker's connections around the Southeast,
he kind of coached all over in parts of Georgia
and Tennessee. I guess kind of around the Birmingham, Huntsville,
you know, Chattanooga. I guess that there's a triangle around
there in that part of the country. Has a lot
of connections, and that led him to a pedal Mississippi
(23:53):
to get Corey Wells. Wells was from had made an
official visit to Texas or the past weekend, had also
visited Auburn and Ole, miss But what Kenny Baker was
able to do in that recruitment got Wells's attention and
earned his verbal pledge.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
I was asking hard brother that.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
We've seen a lot of defensive linemen be pulled in recently,
in the last couple of days, three days over this weekend.
And does that mean that there's guys that they don't
expect to stay here next year or are these guys
that they feel like just twenty six guys that add on.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Yeah, this is just part of the high school process.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
You know, they're probably gonna take three maybe four from
the high school ranks to cycle and they can start
getting a healthier pipeline back. You know, we looked at
the portal window where they added I think five or
six defensive linemen, and there are a couple of guys
who are only going to be on campus for one year,
whether that's for reasons or whether that's for you know, just.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
You know, they run out of eligibility.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
But Texas also added a number of defensive linemen from
the portal who have multiple years of eligibility left. So
in a sense, it kind of gives a little bit
of a reset.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
You know.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
Obviously had that three man class that's twenty five marked
by Justice Terry twenty twenty four kind of got wiped out,
so they needed to take some guys in the portal
to get that number right for future classes, and they
did that. But you know, Dylan Berryman, Corey Wells, these
are guys that I don't know if they're going to.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Play immediately right away.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
They're they're good, but I don't know if they're that good,
but they're going to be part of a healthy pipeline
at the position that Texas really needs to create.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Coach Sark has an unbelievable eye for wide receivers and
Cohen Brown recently decommitted from USC give us a little
bit what you think about and he looks a lot
like Deebo Samuel to.
Speaker 5 (25:58):
Me, Yeah, yeah, he's about six foot one ninety if
you look at his stats, and I think there's a
that may explain his ranking. He only has one extensive
year of varsity experience silver at Waksahatchie. Uh So his
sophomore year, I think he played in about four varsity game.
(26:18):
And you know, as as teenagers do, they grow, they
get more athletic, they get bigger, and that's what Cohen
Brown was able to do.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
Had a thousand yard season last year for the Indians.
And you know, I know it's.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
Pretty easy to trust uh Steve Starkeys and eyes when
it comes to wide receiver. But Lincoln Riley also seeing
something there and liking it is a is a nice
indicator for me.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
I like what he offers.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
I think he can probably fit into the slot at
Texas pretty successfully. Look kind of like Dylan McCutcheon and
and DeAndre Moore and maybe even Jordan Wooding and before them.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
I think it's a good pick up.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
It's someone who you know, we always kind of say this, like, oh,
he's gonna rise in the rank. But I think once
he gets an extra varsity season under his belt and
he performs again, a lot of the services are going
to look and see like, Okay, that first season in
twenty twenty four was no fluke.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
He's a real deal.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
We're talking to Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You can
follow him at Joseph Cook eighty nine. Joe, I wanted
to ask you about Jonah Williams. Obviously, during his baseball season,
he didn't get a lot of work with the football team,
but I've been watching his social and he's been tweeting
at recruits telling him to come on home.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
Now. Is it now? Is the time for him to
immerse himself in football? Correct? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (27:40):
And I remember he was on SEC Network before I
think the game against Tennessee. There and Hoover and the
SEC Network crew was talking to him and he laid
out his schedule. He talked about how he does to
football meetings in the morning, basically kind of does everything
but practice. Then he goes across I thirty five to
go work out with baseball and get ready for his
(28:02):
responsibilities there. I think the Sark and Company gave him
a little break after the baseball season was done, because
remember he went from you know, Galveston Balls baseball season
to Galveston Ball summer workouts. The football season breaks the
collarbone late, and the tours run to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Heels up in rolls early, is part.
Speaker 5 (28:21):
Of the football and baseball program during the playoff run,
and then starts playing baseball.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
There in January.
Speaker 5 (28:28):
So he has had a whirlwin three hundred and sixty
five days. Probably got a well deserved break after baseball
season was done, but yeah, he is in the football program.
I'm not sure how much he's going to be relied
upon this year for safety snaps, but you look at
what he's able to do on the baseball diamond, the
physical capability he has, and you know that there's a
(28:49):
place somewhere for what they want to do with him,
whether that's you know, maybe in some just a handful
of snaps per game, maybe if that's on special teams
anything like that.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
It's going to be exciting to watch him.
Speaker 5 (29:01):
And man, he's the potential he has to make a
legacy for himself into different sports is something we haven't
seen at Texas in quite some time.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
Yeah, pretty exciting about it too. We're gonna let you
go with this.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
Who is the person that you want to see make
the most improvement during this offseason going into the season.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Oh? Great question. Oh yeah, that is a really good question.
I'm gonna go ahead and say, Nato mio Zulu.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
I know we haven't seen a lot from him on
the field as far as you know, we're getting a
lot of playing time, especially when other members of his
twenty twenty two class like Calvin Banks and Cam Williams
are off the NFL, Cole Hudson and DJ Campbell, They've
gotten plenty of snaps throughout their career. I want to
hear it from him because, you know, we had thought
(29:50):
he would give Peyden Connor a little bit of a
run last year. Didn't turn out that way. But now
this is his opportunity. Left guard is his, but that
doesn't mean it's going to stay. He's got to improve
probably in past blocking a little bit more as the
summer goes on, and if he does that, well, he
may have a you know, a two year runaway with
(30:11):
this season and next to create for himself a pretty
good NFL opportunity, so I think he'll import that whole
O line is important with the guys that quarterback that
they have. So I'm looking forward to hearing from him
because I feel decently well about the rest of the spots.
It's just that left guard spot a little bit of
a question and hopefully Neto can answer it himself.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Cannot wait, man as always, thank you for bringing the
heat this Tuesday, Hook Texas Tuesday. Thanks Joe absolutely, guys,
thank you appreciate it. There is Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
Make sure you go and follow him at Joseph Cook
eighty nine. We got all American honors that were giving
(30:53):
out to a Texas pitcher. And the College World Series
field is set up and it starts on Friday, and
we'll talk about it right here on the morning kickoff
on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred the Zone. Great stuff
from our god Joe Cook of Inside Texas. Make sure
you reach out and follow him at Joseph Cook eighty nine.
(31:15):
Also coming up at the top of the hour, we
will have Tim Sims talking all things Taylor Rodeo Association.
You do not want to miss that. A lot is
about to unfold. I can't wait for that conversation.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
But check this out.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
We're gonna end up having this conversation because Mark, I
don't know if you are aware.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
You may be, you mean you follow all things.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
The College World Series starts this weekend and the teams
are all being announced. It is outstanding field. Last night,
the Murray State Racers ended up getting into the College
World Series, along with Louisville, Oregon's Arizona Coastal Carolina, UCLA, LSU,
(32:05):
and Arkansas. Now I've seen the majority of these teams
because the great folks over at Peak events have done
the Round Rock Classic and the Frisco Classic and the
Las Vegas Classic, where all these teams have participated in Jacksonville,
and they've all participated in something around these teams, So
(32:26):
it's going to be an exciting field.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
I believe.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
To me personally, I believe this is Arkansas's year. I
said it earlier in the year. Coach Slasnagle told us
that he believed that they had the best all around
baseball team. All Seeds along Van Horne has never won
the College World Series. So I firmly believe that Arkansas
this is their year. But that's not the story. The
(32:53):
story is Rockos And for all those that have been
to the College World Series, you understand that Rocos is
a place, a bar that specializes during this time for
jello shots. For all of the teams, they.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
Give five dollars jello shots.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
Murray State already a fan has already bought Murray State
one hundred jello shots already for the fans whenever they
get there.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
You're in. But over the years this challenge.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
Has been is taken over the College World Series and
each year they make a donation of all the people
that come in for the Jello Shot challenge.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
They donated to Combat.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
Combat food insecurity, So basically they send it to the
food bank and they help buy all these foods for
other people. So it's worth it for a lot give
not giving them jello shots. But each year they have
done these Jello shots and the challenges have been crazy,
(34:06):
like last year, for example, in the twenty twenty four
World Series, Florida State, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Texas,
A and M Kentucky and NC.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
State were all there.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
Do you know who bought the most Jello shots last year?
Speaker 3 (34:27):
Oh, Kentucky not even close.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
The team that bought the most Jello shots last year
was Tennessee. The Tennessee fans. You know, they ended up
winning it too. They ended up winning the World Series too.
They ended up buying thirty eight thousand, seven hundred and
ninety nine Jello shots.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
You said three thousand, No, I did not.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
I said thirty eight thousand, seven hundred in ninety nine.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
I don't even believe you can have that much Jello
in a state. Well, they did, Texas, A and M
gave a fight. That's what they do. Well.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
I mean that thirty two thousand, seven hundred sixty two
at five dollars a pop five cc cc cc. Yeah,
the jell O Shot Challenge is real.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
And how much money did they raise?
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Its falled out. I mean they gave out a bunch
of checks last year. I was trying to see I
fit in that state.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
I mean, thirty eight thousand, man with five dollars whatever
the percentage of if it's half, you know from each team,
that's man, that's a lot of change.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
You can buy a lot of bread and rice and.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
Beans, and you can you can hook it up, man,
you can have sides.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
You can you can hook it up to say the least,
can we have steak with outside.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
So each year they continue to do that. So twenty
twenty three it was Florida, TCU, Wake Forest, Virginia, Oral, Roberts, LSU,
who's back again, Stanford, and Tennessee. Now Tennessee in twenty
twenty three only did two thousand, two hundred and seven.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Okay, that's reasonable. Then you said that like, oh, y'all
ain't nothing.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Well because that year LSU sixty eight thousand, eight hundred
and eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Louisiana. Man, there you go, you know, you go there. Yeah,
you can't put them.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Minnesota lick in tolerance is higher than most states.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
So now the Roco Challenge that is set at the
College World Series, it's they got their own page.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
They got their own page.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
The College World Series jell O Shot Challenge, it's the
at CWS shot Board, so you can track this. We
will be tracked. That's we'll be tracking this as well.
And they do that so they can raise money for
all these teams. And Murray State is off to a
five one hundred, one hundred shot shots.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
Ain't it amazing that both of the teams.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
That you and I thought were gonna do well are
in the playoff. You said that Arkansas was the team
that you you thought, man, that that's a solid team,
and we saw it when they played Texas. Yeah, it's
a solid team as they could be.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
And U C.
Speaker 6 (37:39):
L A.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
Which Samoa Joe, who you know I mentioned to you
is his nephew, is the hitter on that team. Yeah,
the one that's been cranking them out of the man
knocking them out the park. So outstanding stuff.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
And uh, as always, it is funny when you start
to think about the fan bases college and what really
gets them going during those times. So it's an exciting
time for all of them.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
Ken not Wig.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Coming up next, we're going to have a conversation about
something that I think is pretty dog one cool and
I think you will too as we have this conversation
with Tim Simms of the Taylor Rodeo Association.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Stick around.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Our number two is just around the corner right here
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to our number two of the morning kickoff right here
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Mike Harges,
Mark Henry, and of course Marcus behind the boards and
our number one we talked Texas Basketball as they open
(38:47):
the season against the Duke Blue Devils.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
We also talked to OTAs.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
And we heard from our guy Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
But right now this is a special special interview as
we get ready for the Taylor Rodeo in Williamson County.
We got our guy Tim Sims of the Taylor Rodeo Association,
and Tim, you got something special that is going on,
(39:13):
not just the rodeo, but there's a special event that
is going on at the Taylor Rodeo.
Speaker 6 (39:20):
Yeah, I parish you a lot.
Speaker 7 (39:24):
Hey, we got the next gambler going on this weekend
out in Taylor Thursday.
Speaker 6 (39:30):
I'm confused. My days are kind of running together.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Guys.
Speaker 7 (39:32):
We're a little loarder this morning, uh, Saturday night, June fourteenth,
we're gonna have the world champion Austin Gamblers out there
with us. H. It's a bull riding team there in Austin.
You guys should be very proud of. If you're not,
you need to start watching them. They're bad, you know what.
And all I'm gonna tell you is it's gonna be
(39:52):
a heck of a good time and if you miss it,
you're gonna miss something really fun.
Speaker 1 (39:56):
So I was talking to JJ about this a while back,
and it's really interesting because we are very familiar with
the Austin Gamblers and everything that goes along with it.
But this event is called the second annual Next Gambler
Event and it will be taking place on the fourteenth.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
You talked about it.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
There's thirty young riders who will go head to head
to show their skills with the opportunity. Is just like
American Idol, the Boys, Ultimate Fighter, all these types of riders,
and it comes down to the judges or how do
how are they picked?
Speaker 7 (40:37):
Well, how they were picked or is these guys were
selected from a pool of bull riders that some of
our stock contracts put together. And you know they those
guys know bulls and they know the guys better than anybody.
So they went through there, they talked to these guys
and got them signed up. We've got five teams. They
put them on five separate teams and our six teams.
(40:58):
Excuse me, there's gonna be six efforts with five bull
riders on each team.
Speaker 4 (41:02):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (41:03):
These these guys are the best in the business. I mean,
you know they're they're aspiring to make it up. There
were JB. Mooney and Jose Vittor Lemi, Kayuki Pacico. All
those guys are right now making those millions of bucks.
They'd like to get up there and get some.
Speaker 3 (41:16):
Of that, no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (41:18):
We're talking to Tim Simms of the Taylor Rodeo Association
and for everybody that wants to get some tickets, they
can go to Taylor Rodeo dot org to find out
the latest. But you also have a kickoff that is
going on June the thirteenth, this Friday, that has a
gallop correct.
Speaker 4 (41:40):
Yes, we do.
Speaker 7 (41:41):
We have a we have a gallery going on, We
have a we have a little live auction that goes
along with it. We got some really cool autumns to
talction off to these guys. Uh, it'll it's a ticket
prices one hundred and twenty five dollars. It starts at
five o'clock Friday afternoon. That's happy hour, that's a social hour.
It's an open bar all night, so you don't have
to get there that if you don't want to. We
(42:01):
have a band that's gonna play Forrest later on in
the evening. Kenny Orts and his band will be there.
It's just gonna be a really good time. And it
all raises. Money goes to the scholarship founder, our Scholarship
Foundation and for the Taylor Rodeo Association, Williamson, Mileom and
Lee County. We like to give out a bunch of
scholarships every year and that's where this money goes.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
Do the scholarships go to pretty much anyone that has
to do with f f A or f h A
or anything like that.
Speaker 7 (42:29):
Well, we we try to keep it, you know, you
know in that realm. It's it's not always in that realm. Hell,
we give the huge of my language. We give something
to go to Harvard. We've we've had some Harvard scholarships
go out, some Princeton scholarships. I mean, it's crazy, you know,
to think young people in our area, but we got
some of the brightest young people in the world right
(42:50):
here in one hundred mile radius of Austin, Taylor. So
I mean, you know, we're just really proud of these guys.
We try to keep a lot of them that are
agriculture majors. You know, I know you as you guys,
big long horned guys. But we sent a lot of
kids to Texas a and m Texas Tech. We sent
a bunch of Texas too, so we're really proudly every
one of them that we get.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
I love that. So my other question for you is
is kind of cool, but I'm thinking about this.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
So with all of these guys that are around here
and now we have a pro team in the Austin Gamblers,
is that why you came up with this idea of
creating the next star, the next gambler that will have
a chance to become a professional bull.
Speaker 7 (43:35):
Rid Well, we've been in business for seventy five years.
This is our seventy fifth year of rodeo, so we've
been around doing that a long time. But here about
five years ago, you know, a couple of us together
on our association, our board association, and we started talking
about something different we could do, and we had a
bull riding, just just an open bull riding, and we decided,
(43:58):
you know, our contractor, mister Boudet, his DVS Productions.
Speaker 6 (44:01):
He came to me and said, hey, let's put a
little spin on this.
Speaker 4 (44:04):
Still.
Speaker 7 (44:04):
He said, bow works for the PBR. Great guy and
he told me, he says, I think we can we
have an end with the Austin gamblers and we made
contact with JJ. We had a couple of meetings. JJ's
a great guy, a lot of fun to hang out
with and uh, you know, we got it all worked
out and last year we had it and it was
a great event. It went off really well. And I'm
(44:24):
looking for a packed house this Saturday night. I don't
think everybody loves them.
Speaker 3 (44:30):
I'm all about the fun. Yeah, yes, sir, it's a
good time.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Y'all have y'all have the rodeo clowns and mutton busting.
Speaker 7 (44:38):
We have mister Leon Coffee out there, probably the most
famous wordio clown in the world, will be out there
sitting in the Saturday night. He uh, he just retired
a year or so ago from Houston after I think
around thirty five years, but he's still going. Leon likes
to make the kids laugh. We have the bullfighters out there.
We've got two or three of the best in the
business in my opinion. Make manage Coke, Carlisle and Dakota
(45:02):
Tigue will be out there with was fighting them bulls
and they like to play with them and have a
good time.
Speaker 3 (45:07):
Yes, sir, it's gonna be a great time. Hart just
wanting to get in on that he's been practicing.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
No, no, hearts has not. It's just no, no, don't
let don't let Mark try to fool you on that one.
I am not the one I will admire from afar
because last three years ago was my first time to
actually go to a PBR event and now me and
my family we love it. We always are about it
(45:35):
anytime it's going on. We are definitely going to be involved.
Great folks over at Brown Distributing, as well as JJ
Gotch and Michael Gaffney over at the Gamblers. They have
been great to us and we're excited for you and
your organization to have this type of event. And it's
(45:56):
pretty cool when you sit back and you think about
the opportunity for thirty young bull riders.
Speaker 7 (46:03):
Yes, sir, well, thank y'all for thank y'all for giving
us the opportunity to talk about it this morning. The
g man he's gonna be there Saturday night. I'm not
gonna give away any of the other coaches that we'll
have there. We're gonna have some pretty cool celebrities there
hanging out. I don't know if JJ's gonna make it
back from Brazil or not, you know, he's over there
louder in the drill with all the bull riders having
a good time.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
So I hope he does.
Speaker 7 (46:24):
But if he doesn't, I understand, business is business, and yeah,
we're gonna have some great young men out there, just
you know, all competing for a chance to be the
next gambler and be on the practice squad with the gamblers,
because you know, as they say in bull riding, that
you move up pretty quick. It ain't if you're gonna
get hurt as win, you get hurt, and you always
have a chance to move up there and get in
(46:45):
that top end and maybe make a name for yourself.
Speaker 3 (46:48):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (46:50):
There he is Tim Simms of the Taylor Rodeo Association.
You can get up more tickets over at Taylor Rodeo
dot or make sure you get out there and support
all these young men. Thanks so much, Tim for taking
the time this morning.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
Thank you guys.
Speaker 6 (47:08):
Y'all have a great day and hope see y'all out
there there. You're not no problem man.
Speaker 1 (47:12):
That is exciting because if you think about that, if
you think about everything that has gone on with the rodeo,
and you think about the bull riding, and you think
about the work that goes into it. Mark, we talked
about it. You know, you have to learn how to
fall run your profession. They just fall, you know what
I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
I've actually seen a lot of the rodeo riders, the
training you like to jump on and jump off, the
jump on and jump off and land in with one
leg and to continue to run. That's very hard to do.
I don't know if you've ever seen it. Tony Brackens
used to be a wrestler, a bull wrestler, yeah, and
(47:54):
a roper, And I would go up to Fairfield and
watch him and bro like he would be on a horse,
jump off the horse and keep running like. It takes practice.
It takes a lot of work. And so when I
see rodeo, I don't see just you know what the
(48:16):
activity I'm watching.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
I see all the work that gets put in.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
Yeah, and that's that's that's just the eye that you
kind of have when you're an athlete. You're looking at
everything else except for what is being done. So it
is pretty cool. Like I said, I've been in the
I've been on the dirt, and I've got to see
bull riders like the world champions get it done. And
I've also seen people break their backs. I mean, is
(48:43):
it is crazy to watch these animals on all these
bulls which are athletes they call them, and how big
they are and how powerful they are. But those guys
have to be able to move around and be safe.
You grew up in clean did you grow up riding horses?
And we wrote, we wrote it wasn't something I was
(49:04):
gonna do every week, but yeah, we wrote we rode
horses because.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
That was like probably the most out of control feeling
that I ever had. I don't like it. I never did.
Speaker 2 (49:14):
I used to cry when I was a little kid
and they would take us out the Leftking and Hemp Hill,
Texas and we would ride and I just man, I
put me on the back of the wagon.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
I did not love that feeling of feeling out of control.
I mean it's I have all respect in the world
and the men and women that do rodeo, Yeah it is.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
It is a crazy, crazy sport and those people get
it done for sure. You talk about tough, those those
those men and women are tough when it comes to all.
Speaker 3 (49:48):
That speaking up tough. It was tough for them to
get there, but once they got there. They got it done.
Speaker 1 (49:54):
The Texas Longhorns softball team are national champions, and we
will have Mike White joining us in the next segment
right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred the Zone. I know he's got a smile
(50:18):
on his face. He's been smiling since Friday. He is
the head coach of the national champion Texas softball team
and coach I said it as soon as the game
was over light the tower, congratulations, my friend.
Speaker 4 (50:39):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (50:40):
Man.
Speaker 4 (50:40):
That's been you know, a whirlwinds those few days, but
really enjoying that.
Speaker 1 (50:44):
Ye way the team played over the weekend, no doubt
about a coach. We were Every game was exciting. I
know that you wanted to end it in game two,
but obviously getting the game three seeing Naja Kennedy for
the third straight day, timing with this talented softball team
that you have, it made it going into that last game.
Speaker 3 (51:08):
A little people, a lot of people were a.
Speaker 1 (51:10):
Little nervous about it, but your team came out, jumped
all over early in that matchup, and you never ever
looked back, talked about going talk about going into the game.
By the way I saw you throwing h pitches before
the game, getting your team ready to go.
Speaker 4 (51:29):
Yeah, becoming some solar surgery rotated cuff that I had
in December. So I didn't throw a whole off this year,
but it broke it out for the final week.
Speaker 3 (51:37):
So it was it was, It was fun.
Speaker 4 (51:41):
It was so great that the team come out with
authority and h take take take matters into their own
hands early in the game.
Speaker 3 (51:47):
I mean it was.
Speaker 4 (51:49):
It was so awesome that first innings just to see
you know, us jump on them, you know, you know,
get that big lead, that five run lead in the
first innings. It was just unbelievable really, and you know,
our patients paid off, you know, seeing it for the
third day.
Speaker 3 (52:03):
Coach, congratulations, man. I hope y'all did get to go
to the club.
Speaker 4 (52:10):
Well, Uh, I'm too old for the club. I think
just about anybody else was well.
Speaker 2 (52:17):
I wanted to say congratulations just from me and my family.
I mean, the uh, the run that you had this
year with your women was unbelievable. Uh, and we and
I know you expected to.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
Keep it going.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
Uh, you got a lot coming back next year, Like
have you thought about, you know, what your rotation would
be like?
Speaker 3 (52:39):
Next year, are you still celebrating.
Speaker 4 (52:43):
Better? Both? I mean it never stops me. Right back
into the recruiting cycle. I head out to Kansas City
on wind on Tuesday actually tonight to start recruiting, and
you know, we've got some we're looking at the transfer
portals see what we can kind of where we can
fill fill in. But we have such a strong incoming
freshman class with seven seven kids coming in, and we're
really excited about that opportunity. We always like to try
(53:05):
and build them within as opposed to go out and
get but you know, if there's an opportunity to pick
up some exceptional players that can fill the media positions,
and there's something we're looking at.
Speaker 1 (53:16):
So I wanted to ask you to coach because obviously
the Mac Morgan UH pitching on Thursday, a lot of
people were questioning it. I was fine with it because
Mac has done such a great job for you all
season long. But then going to Teagan and what she
has meant to this team UH throughout the process. Then
(53:38):
in the College World Series not giving up an earned
run the entire time is pretty impressive. To watch your
pitching staff weekend in week out.
Speaker 4 (53:49):
Yeah, thank you about that. And you know Patty Brief
Taylor at pitching coach, it's done a tremendous job with him,
Whichton really had. You know, we have five pitches on staff,
so it's you know, it takes takes a while to
make sure everyone gets the time they need and and
that was the process we had, and you know, just
trusting in each and everyone. I mean, the old played
a big pot in the end. You know, Tigan obviously
was the mainstay, but she couldn't do it without the
(54:10):
help from the stop and that they were ready and
able to help out it any way they could. You know,
the decision to stop Mac was a calculated one. You know,
we didn't want to throw all our eggs in one
basket having had that one first win and you know,
obviously it paid off, but you can't do that without
the trusting the players in the middle.
Speaker 3 (54:29):
We're here with coach Mike White. National Championship. Coach does
that ever? Has has it gotten old yet or is
it still when you hear it just ring in your ears?
That just rings in my ear, just so you said,
and that was like yes, so coach that second the
(54:50):
second game, uh, you went with a myriad of pictures
to throw at Texas Tech.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
I thought that was a bri and you know we
we've discussed that your efforts before. But was that good
for recruiting for you? Was that was did you ever
think you know, I can always say that, you know,
I play my players.
Speaker 4 (55:16):
Yeah, that's definitely something we're going to promote for sure.
I mean, you know, you're seeing some other programs with
kids are bailing out, you know, I mean obviously they
had opportunity part of national programs, but you know they're
they're betting because you're just not getting the time and
they're getting recruited over. So it's something we're cognizant about
and we're going to be aware of. I mean, if we,
like I said, if we pick someone up, you know,
(55:37):
we we may look for a left hand pitcher in
the portal. You know, it's something we were interested in,
just to bring some variety to the stuff.
Speaker 3 (55:44):
But and we do have room.
Speaker 4 (55:45):
We have four pitches next year, and we've got a
really good one coming in and Hannah Wells, who's who
you know, you just never know what they're going to do.
But we were we really have a lot of promise
with Hanna and you know, I think Cam Salmon is
going to come back stronger and bed and you know
Sailadi gataris as Searon moments of Brilliants. So there's a
solid stop there, which week can you pick up and
(56:07):
make stronger with the left hand pitcher before we look
at doing that. Yeah, so this is where we're at.
Speaker 3 (56:12):
So coach.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
Yesterday during my segment, I talked about being a girl
dad and how female sports are starting to grow.
Speaker 3 (56:22):
Your team in Texas Tech played in front of.
Speaker 1 (56:25):
Two point eight million people watching the final game of
the College World Series. As someone who's been doing it
as long as you have, watching the game evolved, How
excited are you when you hear those types of numbers
about what you were a part of and it was
your first national championship.
Speaker 4 (56:48):
Yeah, very excited. Yeah. I think it goes back to
nineteen ninety six with the Fist Olympic team and playing
Atlanta and just to boost the.
Speaker 3 (56:55):
Game Gaunt, I mean around the world.
Speaker 4 (56:57):
It was really it wasn't that big, and with that
boost from the Olympics just took a super step forward
and we've been able to build on that ever since.
And just the quality of softball, the level of play
throughout the country, even in the recruiting age grades. It's
just tremendous. And you can make a highlight reel of
top ten plays from the Collegeable series alone, LIT alone
(57:20):
the super Regionals, and there's so much pressure on just
the performance that they're putting on. It's just incredible. So
I'm real happy to be part of that. And we're
focused on promoting the game itself, because once we get
people to watch it and be a part of it,
they're hooked. And I hear that so often.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
Yeah, and a lot of people are hooked. And you
talked about top ten plays and how it was being done.
I can't let you go without talking about the performance
by Mia Scott her last game as a Texas Longhorn.
She goes out handles her business and obviously we know
the story now. I know you couldn't talk about it
(57:58):
before because you were talking about Hippa, but we saw
the picture of her sitting there with the knee wrapped
and she was like, I didn't need an a c L.
Speaker 3 (58:06):
I was ready to go.
Speaker 1 (58:08):
How cool is that that she was able to perform
at that level dealing with an injury as such?
Speaker 4 (58:16):
Oh, without a doubt, I mean, if people had noticed
that we weren't standing her much, that's the reason why,
because we wanted to protect her. And you know, she
could have had at least you know, fifteen more stolen
bases per year, you know, without that injury. But you know,
she was able to play through it, and you know,
we're really kind of you know, it's a decision that
she made. You know, we we had advice that you know,
(58:37):
she should probably shouldn't do some stuff, but still born,
she wanted to do it. She had that grit that
termination to say, you know what, I'm going to do
this for my for my team, and I'm going to
be there for them and give them everything I've gone.
And we're so blessed to have me a scared on that.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
Program, no doubt about it. Coach. We're so excited to
have you on.
Speaker 1 (58:55):
We're thankful that we got a chance to spend this
immaculate run with you, and we from the bottom of
our hearts here at AM thirteen hundred to Zone the
Flagship Station, we are pleased to tell you that you
are a national.
Speaker 3 (59:12):
Champion and nobody could ever take that away from you.
Speaker 4 (59:15):
Never, baby, Let's go welcome.
Speaker 3 (59:18):
Congratulations coach and thank you.
Speaker 1 (59:20):
For the time.
Speaker 4 (59:21):
Thank you so much. I appreciate you all.
Speaker 1 (59:23):
No problem there is coach Mike White, national champion and man,
let me just tell you this, Mark, you won national championships.
I mean, you won WWE championships, you won that weightlifting championship.
Those are all individual. When you win a team one man,
(59:44):
that is something that y'all had. The blood, sweat and
tears and all that. As somebody that won three minor
league rings, we still talk about our championships all my buddies,
we still talk about it. I still wear my ring
from time to time. And those were special moments. And
for them to win it on the national level at
(01:00:05):
the University of Texas, getting there as many times as
they did and coming up short and for them to
finally get over the head. You can hear it in
his voice. He's like, yeah, baby, he's still excited about that,
as he should be. But like he said, I'm back
on the grind again. I gotta get back out of
(01:00:25):
the night. I'm I'm on a plane ahead of the
Kansas City to go find me another player, maybe a
left handed pitcher. So excited for them, but coming up next,
we got the world's strongest man, bringing you his world's
strongest take right here on the morning kickoff on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zoll.
Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
The beat drops.
Speaker 4 (01:00:49):
You know what that means?
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
Can only mean one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:00:52):
WWE Hall of Famer and the World's Strongest Man, v
Mark Henry brings you the world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:01:00):
Take it away, big fellow, Mark, Yep, you know what
time it is.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
Time.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man.
Speaker 3 (01:01:12):
My guest. Back then they didn't know me. Now I'm hot.
They all own men, Guys. I take to day. It's
brought to you by Mom Foods.
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Shout out the moms best pastrami in the city of Austin. Guys,
the New York Knicks, of course, let go of that coach,
coach Thibodeaux, and now they're in the search for who's
gonna be the next captain of the ship. They thought
(01:01:51):
about Emiandoca at Houston. I'm sure Marcus and Hart's both
that team and would not like that very much. They
also have reached out to Jason Kidd at the Dallas Mavericks, who,
(01:02:14):
if he's got any sense, he will stay away from
that New York job and coach Cooper Flag next season.
But I'm going to give you the people that I
think they should go after, along with some candidates that
are not your typical.
Speaker 3 (01:02:34):
NBA caliber.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
Well they're assistant coaches, but they haven't been head coaches yet.
And Becky Hammond, what a move would it make in
New York to have the first women's head coach in
the league. She's very well respected, highly sought after assistant
(01:03:00):
for every team. Is you know she has to renegotiate
every year now with the Spurs. Sam Cassell multiple championships
as a player and as a as an assistant coach.
Royal Ivey University of Texas player UH head coach of
(01:03:23):
the Team Africa. UH has worked with Lui Ale Dang
to make Team Africa the team that has become over.
Speaker 3 (01:03:33):
The last five years.
Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
Johnny Bryant, who is an assistant right now with the
Cleveland Cavaliers. Johnny Briant is is a highly sought after guy.
Like he every time a job comes up, his name
is at the top of the list.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
Top three.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
People were talking about people like Jay White and Mike
Malone and Dan Toni.
Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
People that are new York based guys.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
I don't think any of them want any parts of that.
But if I had my choice, it would be Becky Hammond,
Royal Labby, even maybe Rajion Rondo, who is also an
assistant and has been a high level assistant.
Speaker 3 (01:04:23):
These people have just not got chances.
Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
And it's not about you know, them being African American
men and being women. I like the diversity, but I
would like to see one of those coaches get a shot.
Speaker 3 (01:04:41):
What say you?
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
I mean, I believe that if you're gonna go out
and get yourself a coach. I'm a big fan of
Sam Cassell, I mean not Sam Well, Yeah, Sam Cassell,
but I'm also a frian of.
Speaker 3 (01:04:56):
Mark Jackson.
Speaker 1 (01:04:57):
I think Mark Jackson would be perfect for that, for
he's been out of the limelight for quite some time.
Maybe he understands I mean, he doesn't have to change
his ways or his views, but he doesn't have to
force those upon other people.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
I think that is important for him to understand.
Speaker 1 (01:05:15):
I think he would be a great coach because he
was the one who kind of built that Golden State
dynasty by saying it the Splash brothers. But I believe
in in Sam Cassel. I think he's earned the right
to be a head coach. I know people also mention
Mike Brown. Mike Brown is a voice that has been
very successful, but he's also one coach of the year,
(01:05:39):
and most of the time you win Coach of the Year.
Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
You go get fired within the next couple of years.
Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
So that's why I'm curious to all of these moves.
Like I said before, my thought process was should have
never got done. You shouldn't never let Thibodeau go. If
you wanted to adjust the way he did things, or
you wanted to talk to him about certain things, if
you wanted to improve his bench, you should have done that.
(01:06:06):
Because if you look at the teams that are playing
deep into the playoffs and now playing for a championship,
their benches are deep. Yours is short and suspect. So
try to figure out what is next for them. And
if you're gonna do that, get the next coach. You're
gonna have to improve your bench anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
You also have to find somebody to do the financials.
You need a general manager that can navigate the cap
orchestrate what draft picks you have, which the Knicks don't
have any because they gave all of them up with
the McHale Bridges trade, and the only way that they're
going to get something back is if they give up something,
which looks like Karl Anthony Towns might have the shortest
(01:06:49):
tenure with the New York Knicks and the Stent players.
Speaker 1 (01:06:53):
Well, his trades have actually besides the fact that he
gave up so much for Briggs, O Giana Nobley, he
was good. Yeah, Bridge was good and kat has been good.
So I mean they're and they traded for Bronson, I
mean they're they did good things, but where's the finishing product?
Speaker 3 (01:07:14):
That is the thing.
Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
And let's be honest, the Knicks even going into next year,
they were not supposed to be this good this year.
Speaker 3 (01:07:22):
They weren't. They weren't you exactly right.
Speaker 1 (01:07:26):
And they won fifty fifty games back to back seasons
with what they had. And so that's why I'm always like, Okay,
so let's say he doesn't play all those guys all
those minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:07:40):
Who's to say that they get into the playoffs? Who's
to say that they win is because he played those
guys because that's what he had.
Speaker 2 (01:07:48):
That's true. But rather than make it about their wins
and losses. What coach do you think is the one.
Speaker 3 (01:07:55):
Like I said, Sam cassell Or or Mark Jackson.
Speaker 2 (01:07:59):
You know, we talked about Mark Jackson off the air,
and apparently he has some issues off the court with
him wanting to impulse his spirituality.
Speaker 1 (01:08:12):
That's why I said, as long as you don't push
it on people, and you do, you can still have
your beliefs and do everything you want to do, just
don't force it upon others, right. I mean, there's a
lot of people that do different things in their off
time that may not be able to do.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
The New York guy play for the Knicks. Yeah, you know,
highly regarded coach. I think that he doesn't have to
move very far, like just go down a few street.
You got to make sure that some things kind of
change and do things a little bit different.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
And I think he will because he has been out
of the game for quite some time, and I believe
that he's going to put himself in the right place
for that opportunity. If he doesn't get it, he doesn't
get it. But I would at least check on them.
They talking about Jason Kidd, They're talking about all these
other people. Why not check on Mark Jackson. I don't know,
(01:09:05):
I don't make I don't think he uh forgot how
to coach basketball. I promise you that another great tech
a bout the world's strongest man coming up. We'll close
out the show and send you to Dan Patrick, but
we'll also talk about Dylan Valentis. Yes, he is that
good right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
(01:09:26):
and thirteen hundred The Zone. What a great show we've
had today, guess theupon guests the Pond. Yes, if you
missed any parts of it, make sure you get over
to the podcast page wherever you get your podcast podcast,
but hopefully it's on that iHeartRadio app. We had Joe
Cook ev inside Texas. We had Tim Simms of the
(01:09:48):
Taylor Rodeo Association talking about how these young men thirty
bull riders have a chance to be the next gambler.
Get over to Taylor Rodeo dot org for a for
a chance to get some tickets. It will be Thursday,
I mean Friday night, and then Saturday night is.
Speaker 3 (01:10:06):
The official event.
Speaker 1 (01:10:07):
We also had national champion head coach Mike White of
Texas Softball, and right now we want to give you
an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to go
see Alice Cooper and Judas Priest October to twenty fifth
at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater. All you gotta do is
(01:10:28):
tap that red microphone. Excuse me, that red microphone. Yeah, yeah,
you really tap that red microphone right there?
Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
Yeah, I did.
Speaker 1 (01:10:43):
And make sure you leave us the voice the message run.
Run is your keyword of the day. Run is your
keyword for a chance to win Alice Cooper and Judas
Priest tickets October the twenty fifth at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater.
And make sure you tell all your friends to follow
(01:11:03):
us on social media. At AM thirteen hundred design at
Dean Mark Henry and of course at Harball Harje. I
know we were talking college baseball in the last hour,
and I was talking about Rocos and the ability to
buy shots and how many shots and who will be
the winner of the shots at Rocos at the College
(01:11:27):
World Series. But I wanted to mention that Texas freshman
Dylan Valantis, one of the last players to sign in
Texas recruiting class of last year, was named Freshman All
American by National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association on Monday. He
is among thirty four standout freshmens that were selected, but
(01:11:52):
he was on the first team.
Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
In league play, he led all pitchers.
Speaker 1 (01:11:57):
With the minimum of twenty five innings with an er
of one point five to nine, a whip of point
eighty five and batted average against him with one sixty
batting average, and he led in saves. He had eleven
saves in conference play, which is the most by an
SEC freshman, and he broke a twenty two year old
(01:12:19):
record held by old missus Stephen Head. Overall, on the season,
he was four and one with a one nine four
ERA with fifty one innings, only walking twelve while striking
out seventy four. He was a Stopper of the Year finalist,
and he tied tenth nationally in saves with twelve. But
(01:12:41):
he helped Texas go to a forty four and fourteen
record and an SEC crown.
Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
So youth is being served on the forty acres.
Speaker 1 (01:12:51):
We talked about Adrian Rodriguez, and we talked about Jonah
Williams as freshman and being impactful freshman, and Texas is
out on the road doing the same thing, trying to
get that figured out as well, so they can get.
Speaker 3 (01:13:07):
More and more done with that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:10):
Tomorrow we'll have Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman
joining us at seven thirty four. We'll also have Chris
Hummer of twenty four to seven Sports at eight seventeen,
and he will be talking about the house settlement, what
the expectations are, transfer portal, because he's all over the
(01:13:31):
transfer portal as well, and so much more. It's been
a while since we caught up with Chris, so I
wanted to make sure that we got a chance to
talk to him. And then on Thursday, we will have
Earl Campbell. Earl Campbell will be joining us on Thursday
to talk about some things and talk all things Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 3 (01:13:53):
We have no NBA basketball tonight. We will talk about
that tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:13:59):
But remember all twenty four teams will start OTAs and
there's a lot of people that are wondering who's showing
up and who's not showing up. In Cincinnati, they made
the announcement that their number one pick, Shamar Stewart, he's
not coming in to camp for OTAs. The rookiees not there,
(01:14:20):
Trey Hendrickson is not there. But in Dallas, Michael Parsons,
who is looking for a new contract. He is showing up,
but they don't know exactly what he's going to do
during that time.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
I bet you Michael Parsons already know what the number
is and that they've worked it out. Jerry Jones just
wants them to stay above the news cycle. And they
know what they got a pan. They know they got
a pan.
Speaker 3 (01:14:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
I understand that, but like, what do you mean that
he knows the number and he's just showing up to
show up.
Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
No, he's showing up because he's the leader of that
defense and that he said an example. And you know
you can't knock a guy that shows up when you
don't deal, correct. I don't think he's going to Uh,
I think Jerry Jones all they listen, we've already Michael,
we're gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:15:13):
Pay you and uh, we got your money. Come to
bring me my money.
Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
Yeah, but let's not uh, let's not let's not announce
it right now. Let's just keep staying above the news cycle.
So we're we're always thought about. Don't forget that t J.
Watt is out there, He's going to be in the
news cycle. Trey Hendrickson, He's gonna be in the news cycle,
(01:15:38):
So why what?
Speaker 3 (01:15:40):
What is the hold up?
Speaker 1 (01:15:41):
As as we talked about before the show, the cowboys
wait too long to get things done and they end
up paying more money than what they should be paying.
Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
This Jerry Jones, Man, I can't. I'm like, why I
can't rationalize? Uh, tell you what his thought processes are,
because I don't think he knows.
Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:16:07):
I think that he wakes up every day and when
he put his feet on the floor, he's like, I
wonder what I'm gonna do today. That's no plan. He's
the best you got. You got plenty of money. He
can do whatever he wants, and that's the way you
live it.
Speaker 3 (01:16:21):
Man. I just think that you play a dangerous game.
Speaker 1 (01:16:23):
I know Micah's not going to where it seems like
he's got a good relationship with Schadenheimer. They played that
game the other day about calling good night and then
it turned into a love fast about hey man, you
you we need you in this organization. You're doing a
great job of handling business. We get it, we get it,
but my goodness, can we just not be in the
(01:16:44):
news cycle and kind of just do what you're supposed
to do and that's take take care of the man. Yeah,
no doubt about it. We'll see what ends up happening.
I want to thank Mark Henry. I want to thank Mark.
I want to thank Tim Simms, Joe Cook and of
course Mike White And as always, I want to thank
(01:17:06):
you the people like follow. Subscribe and tell five friends
to tell five friends that the Morning Kickoff is here
Monday through Friday, seven to nine am on AM thirteen
hundred the Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
And just remember this. Don't believe everything you see, because
even salt looks like shit. Peace,
