Speaker 3 (02:07):
What's up? Mark brother?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I'm so happy to be able to join you because
I've told you, like you said the World Traveler, I
spent nine hours in Austin and had to do a
turnaround trip and come to Barbados for my All Caribbean
Wrestling Company, and you know it's been great, but I
miss you guys.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, it's been different without you being here, man, And
you know I can't. I'm glad I'm not getting too
many hugs, but you know how that goes.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I mean, it's just.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
You know, I'm gonna make a hard pass. I'm gonna
make a hard pass, hard pass on the hugs.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
But we shall see.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
I want to get into this conversation because there's so
much that is going on with college football, and as
I said, Texas falls to number six and one pole
and number seven in the apeop pole. The coaches pole
has thet had number six, but the eight people has
them at number seven, and that's what we go by
on a lot of these polls. But there's so much
(03:10):
to really get into when you start to think about
this football team and the expectations. But the one thing
that we all decided that they were going to focus
on was the next three weeks and how good can
Texas be.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
First of all, we respect all these opponents that we
play in San Jose State. As I said, they're a
dangerous team. You know they're going to throw the ball
over fifty times Saturday, and you got to keep the
ball in front.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
You got to tackle really well.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Their attacking style defense a lot of movement upfront. So
we have to assess an address and game plan for
the opponent that we have. But I think a lot
of what we do is internal, so each individual works
at his craft and gets better. Then you have to
be coachable.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
To do that.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
You got to take the coaching and then try to
apply the things that we're working on. There's a lot
of guys that didn't play Saturday that we're going to
need to play, need to grow and develop over this time,
so they need to work on their craft too over
this next month. And that started today and I thought
we got off to a good start with that. So
I guess it's probably twofold. But more importantly, it's the
(04:13):
task at hand what's in front of us, and that's
playing San Jose State. To play good against San Jose State,
we need to get better internally so that we can
play our best football Saturday eleven o'clock.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
And the thing about it, Mark, you know, the one
thing that's going to be challenging is the secondary and
the reason why I say that they throw the ball,
they threw the ball forty five times in the last
game San Jose State did, and that is going to
be something that they are going to have to focus
on and be able to deliver. But before we hear
from Michael taff and Malik Muhammad, let's get your take
(04:46):
on what you saw in the Texas football game against
Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Well, I saw a Texas team that struggled with keeping
the line of scrimmage on defense.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
The defensive line players got to get better.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
I think a lot of those guys were not used
to the fact that the combo blocking that Ohio State
did was excellent. And they're gonna have a lot of
success in their running game against every other team because
I feel like Texas defense is the standard. They only
they gave up less than two hundred and fifty yards guys.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Two point three yards per carry too.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, let's don't crown Ohio State just yet. They just
they got off to a better start than Texas did.
Arch had a lot of pressure on him and we
talked about this that you know what, he looks like
he's calm under the storm. But I'm gonna tell you what.
On Saturday, excuse me. On Saturday, Art showed that below
(05:46):
the water, those people were moving like he's got to
calm down, he's got to make the short throw, he's
got to make the intermediate throw, and not.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Focus on everything but focus on one thing.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Well, all right, well, moving forward, this team I think
is gonna play a lot better.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
We talked about that multiple times.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
But there's gonna be important times that has to be
played when you start to think about this football team.
Michael Taff talked about Malik Muhammad, who had one hell
of a football game considering who he was going up against,
Grayson Lyttleton, the young freshman. He's gonna be impossible to
keep off the field because he showed some upside, big
time upside. But Michael Taff talked about number five and
(06:29):
how he trust him all the time.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
I've always trusted in five from day one. This is
a funny story.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
So he comes in. It's gonna be a long one.
So you a long story? What come on, a Phil?
I just finished my contract for this one too, Thanks
John here. Yeah, make sure the batters are good.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
So you're early in roles freshman year and I can
already tell this guy was gonna be a stud and uh,
Brandon Harris film me, he's gonna be a stud South
oak Cliff. I was like, all right, so I bring
him in to watch tape. And with Coach Gideon, he
always had the depth chart up.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
That's just what type of coach he was. And sixteen
was with the twos.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
When he came in and I'm drawing up a scheme
for him and he's like, hold up, why is sixteen
with the twos? I was like, well, you know, we
got Keen Crawford, Catalan, Jaron Thompson. Like it's gonna be
their year. You know, if they get injured or they're tired,
I'm gonna come in. I'm gonna be a special teams guy,
but you know I'm gonna compete, but you know it's
their job to lose. He was like, so you don't
(07:38):
really want to go to the NFL.
Speaker 6 (07:39):
Huh?
Speaker 3 (07:40):
I was like, what are you talking about?
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (07:41):
I did.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
He was like, then, why don't you erase that and
put sixteen up there.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
I was like, well, that's Coach Gideon's depth chart.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
I would if I could. He was like, nah, bro,
you're gonna start this year trusting me.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
And ever since then, I was like the confidence that
he had in me, just based off the little film
that he's watched me, gave me confidence of myself, so
he should still be in a senior in high school
and he was telling me, go erase your name and
go put yourself as a starter. So ever since then
we five and sixteen. You know, we try to say
(08:11):
that we're locked down.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
You know, the funny thing about that story is when
you start to look at what Michael Taff has become
and how they've grown together and now Michael Taff is
that chisel veteran leader in the backside that you start
to look around. It's like, man, this is one of
those things with this guy that continues to be a special,
(08:33):
special leader on this football team. But I want you
to hear from Alik Muhammad as well, as he told
coach Sart you can trust in five as well.
Speaker 7 (08:43):
That actually before the game on that Friday, we always
write a message to one of our to whoever you
want to write a message to, and had I had
wrote a message to start telling him that I'm finally
I can't say what I can't say what I wrote
down it's kind of explicit.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
But.
Speaker 7 (09:04):
I was just telling them that you you you can
put your trust in five. Like I'm gonna go out
there and do it, Like I'm gonna go out there
and showcase what y'all have been seeing for the last
two years for me, and I'm gonna finally go put
it on display.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Because I feel like last year.
Speaker 7 (09:19):
I don't feel like I know, last year, I was inconsistent,
Like especially when it came to the postseason, in the playoffs,
I was inconsistent and it kind of lingered a little.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Bit into those playoff games.
Speaker 7 (09:33):
So I just wanted to let it be known that coach,
you you can put your trust to me, like I'm
coming to play.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
That's a big That's a big statement, man, that's a
big statement.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
But you know what, like confidence, we talk about this
all the time. Confidence is everything, And I always bring
up that movie The Matrix, because it's true, like you
don't have supreme confidence in your abilities.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
How you expect somebody else to right right?
Speaker 1 (10:03):
And for him it has got you when you're on
that island.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
You gotta be confident, you gotta be you see hard.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
What he said to Michael Taff he was like, look, man,
you got to erase that name, put your name up there.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
And he said, that's not for you, that's not for me.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
To do that because he's like, well you don't see
yourself there, then you're not gonna be that right.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
And that's a kid telling the bet.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Got to make that, got to make that move, and
everything else continues to make that happen. So we'll see,
we'll see what they get ready to do. This is
a big week for the Texas Longhorns. There's a lot
that is going on with that as well. So for me,
when I start to think about this football team, and
coach Shark talked about the lack of turnovers in the
(10:51):
last ball game and how they had a streak I
believe of twenty four games of creating a turnover. I
expect to see tech Is making plays in the secondary
to create some turnovers. But I also see that defensive
front doing the same thing.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Well, they're gonna play a passing offense and they're gonna
need multiple corners and multiple safeties because they're gonna be
running a lot of forties in that game. So this
coming week, second unit get ready.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yeah, And he said he's gonna play at least fifty
to sixty players in this next ball game. So we'll
see how that plan. We're just getting started here on
a Way Back Wednesday edition of The.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Morning Kickoff Dallas Drama.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Somebody sets the record strength and it's Micah's agent.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
We'll hear it from him.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Also Danny Davis at seven thirty four and MLBU playoffs
are getting closer and closer. Right here on the Way
Back Wednesday edition of the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Coming up in the next
segment is our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin America Statesman.
He made the trip to Columbus and now back at home.
(12:05):
Wait ready for all the action as Texas, we'll take
on San Jose State, but we'll get the party started
at eight a m. That's right, Longhorn Game Day will
kick off from the stadium for the first time this
season early in the morning.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
What's up, Mark? You think it's gonna be some rory
harmon talk.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Probably not. Let's try to avoid that. We're in basketball.
I mean, we're not in basketball just yet. But you
never know when you and Danny get together. But right now,
I want to talk about the Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas
Cowboys start their season tomorrow night. You can come out
and hang out with me at the Armadillo Den off
(12:46):
of Manshak Road tomorrow seven to nine with the great
folks from bud Like get a chance to win a
pair of tickets to this weekend's game as well, But
the drama always has to odds of it. We have
been listening to Jerry Jones's side, but now we get
to hear from Michael Parson's agent, David Muguletta, who is
(13:10):
from Well lives here in the Austin area, went to
the University of Texas and he has a way to
make sure everybody gets their money. But before we hear
from him, I want you to hear from Rachel Nichols
as she talks about the things that I have been
saying for a long time. And the blueprint is the
(13:34):
Philadelphia Eagles. So listen to this math. I heard there
wasn't going to be math, but there's math today.
Speaker 8 (13:41):
A lot of spotlight on Jerry Jones as a GM.
So I wanted to look at how the lack of
planning by the Cowboys, how that's cost them. If they
first extended DAK when they could have over both of
the contracts he signed, they would have saved forty nine
million dollars if they first extended Ceedee Lamb when they
had the opportunity, and with them it was they would
have saved fourteen million dollars. And if he had extended
(14:03):
Michael last year when he did the DACK and CD
the deals, he could have saved thirty six million dollars
less than what Micah eventually signed for in Green Bay.
And that all adds up to about ninety nine million
dollars you could have been paying other players. And then,
of course, if you had put him up for trade
in the spring, you could have gotten him out of
(14:24):
the conference the trade package. Even if you stayed in
the conference, the packers would have been forced to give
you more.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Uh, imagine that. Imagine that of getting ahead of it.
I always say this, Mark, and you are in the
talent evaluation business. When you recognize the talent, you take
care and compensate the talent properly so you don't have
to pay too much.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
You know what, I got to give you your props.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
You have been saying that from the beginning, and you've
been telling me Mark, you you you gotta state. Of course,
don't don't stop being a cowboy fan. Because they made
this off. You just fixed it for me. I'm done.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
I cannot.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
I cannot sit back and idly watch them waist ninety
dollars when they could have afforded so many great players
to help the team win. Jerry's not trying to win.
Jerry is trying to create the soap opera. That's exactly right,
and I'm out.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
On X we did the polls here on thirteen hundred
zone the Instagram.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
The Instagram post said that I should.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Be a Ravens fan, and on X they should. They
they said that I should be a Detroit Lions fan.
Out of all of the teams that that we put
up there, I'm heavily considering one of those teams. I'm
gonna let I'm gonna let the good Lord fish my
heart and see if I can stick it out with you,
(16:09):
because you my brother, and I want to stick it
out with you.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
But man, we in the weeds, hard man.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
It's something that could have been avoided. We talked about
it multiple times. But the thing that really concerns me
is the lack of respect for the situation with Micah's agent.
You trying to coerce Micah into an agreement and then
your feelings get hurt when the agent gets involved because
(16:36):
you had a handshake deal. That's not how this work
in this day and age. That's not how things are done.
And Jerry, I understand you want to go old school,
but sometimes new school.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Gives you some light to the subject. You're the one
that failed these players.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
You're the one that didn't want to do the things
the right way to save the organization.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
But I'm sick and.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Tired of everybody getting mad at the team, the players
for wanting their money, when Jerry was the one who
avoided it. Oh, you don't have to take that much. No,
I'm not messing it up. I went on striking professional
baseball because of the fact, so all these guys that
are getting paid right now can get paid the money
that they are earning. And here's the crux of it all.
(17:19):
If I'm taking a hometown deal, I've messed it up
for the next guy that probably wasn't afforded the things
that I was afforded. As Dak Prescott was a fifth
round pick, fourth round pick, and he earned his way
to that money. Ceedee Lamb first round pick. You could
have signed him two years ago. You knew what the
talent was. He was already making all pro bos. He
(17:41):
was making pro bos in all Pro. When those guys
are doing those types of things, you lock them up.
Go look at professional baseball. They've got young players. Ronald
Acunya Jr. Is playing on a He deserves way more
money than what he's getting right now. He deserves way
more money than that he got paid early. You start
(18:02):
to look at the teams that do things right, that
put themselves in positions to win championships, and that is
how you get there. But I want you to hear
from David Mugileta and hear what he had to say
on Stephen Ay's first take yesterday. Was Jerry Jones accurate
when he said that he offered to make Micah the
highest paid non quarterback, I'm sorry, non quarterback in NFL history?
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Was he telling? Was he honest when he said that?
But that's a loaded question, right.
Speaker 9 (18:32):
So from an ap Y Stamford standpoint, if you're just
looking at the average that there was offered to him,
I believe it was forty point five was the offer
which would have made him at the time, from an
Apy standpoint, the highest paid.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
That being said, the.
Speaker 9 (18:44):
Way the cash Flower structure over his first three new years,
he would not be paid as the highest player highest
paid player in the NFL. So again that's why I
say the devils in the details. And another important part
of the contract was a four year deal versus a.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Five year deal.
Speaker 9 (18:57):
Right when you look at that, that's it few year.
It could be the difference in thirty to forty million
dollars for the player. You know, if you look at
where the pass rusher market was a year ago, it
was at thirty five million, or show with Nick Moosa.
Now it said forty seven million in one year with
Michael Parson. So four years from now, where do you
think that number is. It's probably cultier to sixty five
to seventy million dollars a year. And if we lock
in at fifty currently at forty million dollars, just that
(19:19):
year loan is worth an additional thirty million dollars to Mike,
if not more. And that's not even counting the rays
that he got for the next four years or the
fact that the Packers were, you know, we're good enough
us that they gave us the fifth year option as
a linebacker this year as opposed to DM So that's
an additional three million dollars, So you know, the difference
between those two deals you're looking at could be possibly,
(19:40):
you know, sixty seventy million dollars.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
When it's all set and done. Hard, did you hear
that it's in the detail. The devil is in the details,
that's what. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
And the whole point of trying to get ahead of
these things and not dealing with Micah's agent.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
A lot of it harde I think came from a
bad place.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
It came from a place of ignorance, and it came
from a place of huberus.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
And and and and him being a him being a bully.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
Basically like I wanted to I wanted the way that
I want it, and this is the way that we've
always done it, and the way that we.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Always done it is not correct.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
I have a friend of mine saved hundreds, if not
thousands of lives in his career as a cardiothrastic surgeon
in Austin, Texas. Not gonna say what hospital. He wanted
a raise, didn't get it. What happened hard another state,
(20:48):
another city said come on, we'll take you.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
And now he's making that money in another state.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
That's the same thing as football It's the same thing
as being a publicly traded company and having somebody on
your staff that can just sell stocks and bonds better
than everybody else. You got to go where the money
is all You're gonna lose them. We lost them because.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
We have a we have a place that doesn't stick
to the details. Why would I if I keep hitting
my head against the wall? Why why would I do that? Why? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (21:30):
And the thing about it is, Jared's just at the
beginning of this stage because he also represents George Pickens, Tyrant,
Tyler Smith. There's some guys that he's gonna have to
face with and Jared gonna have to come up off
of it. You see everybody getting extensions. Now, maybe that's
why he was trying to let Michael go.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
He signed everybody.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Now I'm not making that mistake no more.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
You got the money right now, you go play. Here
you go, Limke, here you go.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
You finna get paid to the third highest fullback in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Right now, that's wild.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Coming up next, we're gonna talk to our guy, Danny
Davis from the Austin American Statesman get his take on
the Texas loss. His trip to Ohio State but most importantly,
I gotta ask him about how he feels about the
Colorado Rockies in that fight yesterday, right here on the
Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
(22:24):
Welcome back to the morning kickoff right here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. And as always, I'm
looking forward to this conversation. It's Wednesday, so that means
that we are going to be joined by our guy,
Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman as he breaks
it down at underscore. Danny Davis and Danny before we
(22:46):
get into the Texas Longhorn conversation, what did you think
of your fighting Colorado Rockies yesterday? Deciding enough is enough
and I can't handle it when y'all try gonna score
all these runs against us.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
There you go? You good? I mean I was. I
was just happy to see some five from the game.
In the long season.
Speaker 10 (23:13):
Doesn't help that one of my really good friends is
a Giants fan and I'm in a you know, a
group of text with him and another Giants fan, So
that didn't help because we end up losing.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
The game of that anyway.
Speaker 10 (23:23):
But in a long season, I'm happy to see some
some five of them giants are punks, and you know,
hopefully the Rockies just every one of them gets ejected,
so we would actually have to sit through a three
hour loss, just get it, get it done in the
first sitting.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
Yeah, I was watching a little bit of that game
yesterday and after Devers hit that home run, when the
ball was going up, I was like, the Colorado fans
have just decided they're not going to any more games,
because it was about the emptiest that I've seen that
ballpark in a very very long time.
Speaker 10 (23:55):
Which is which is good, which is what you know
Colorado fantas need to do. I mean, the problem with
the Rockies is it's a beautiful stadium, it's a good
you know good, there's a nice cheap beer there.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
It's something they're doing in Denver. So I mean, they
keep showing up and there's.
Speaker 10 (24:07):
No reason for ownership to you know, change anything if
they're still making money. So I mean, through Rocky anthonya
South Going, we need to kind of tune out and
send a message to ownership to get their act together
so we can actually have a competitive ballpark, ball club
and a team to actually report. So I was glad
to see the empty stands last night.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
Why did you see that Danny is owning something? He
is saying that the players.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
I mean that the fans need to take control of
their franchise. Don't support them, force them to do what's
right for you as a fan.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Are you trying to say that for the Cowboys? I
think that's where. Yeah, I knew where you had to cry.
Speaker 5 (24:45):
Man.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
I told you I cried when I'm losing. I'm the
worst loser of all the time. I hate the Cowboys
losing all the time, right and disrespecting us as fans,
not listening, don't care, you.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
Know in the Rockets.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
I went to color rode to the Rocky stadiums a
couple of times when I was on your uh, when
I would go up there for Olympic events. Beautiful stadium
looking at the mountains and everything is so pit your refs.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
You don't mean to tell me that place can't be
pulled right? Yeah, because there's more to do endeavor.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
They're focusing on the Broncos, and hopefully this week they're
focusing on the Texas Longhorns, which I doubt.
Speaker 10 (25:24):
I have a feeling that that Mark may not have
liked that, like a Parsons trade going.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
You didn't made them lead the room. You didn't make
them lead the room.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
Hey, Daddy, talk about your trip to Columbus. Obviously, Texas
comes up short. We're trying to turn the page. But
I'll get a chance to talk to you on Wednesdays.
I see you Monday and Tuesdays, so we get a
chance to talk. But I wanted to ask about your
trip to Ohio state where the people finally nice, and
what was your biggest takeaway from the ballgame.
Speaker 10 (25:54):
I bet the trip was wonderful as far as you know,
just being in that environment. The stadium. It was a
really cool stadium. It was really fun when it was
when it was crowded. I like seeing environments. I like
seeing people caring about college football. The fans were fine
to me. I also wasn't wearing burnt orange. There's no
reason to really talk. I was dressed nice. I don't
never want to know why anyone would would be mean
(26:15):
to me, but yeah, I mean, the people in Columbus
were nice. There's plenty of stuff to do there in
the stadium was as advertised. If you're a Texas fan,
you may not have enjoyed it as much, but it
was nice to see a lot of Texas fans made
that trip. There was a good spattering into burnt orange
in the crowd. I didn't see too many fights. I
think everyone kind of got along. I didn't get the
(26:36):
vibe that I heard about from two thousand and five,
But for me, a neutral party observer, it was a
nice trip and it definitely something to check off my
journalism bucket list.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Are you gonna Are you gonna post your house?
Speaker 2 (26:50):
They drip on your social media so we can we
can judge your fit.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
You know, that's how kids do today fit.
Speaker 10 (27:00):
I had it on my Instagram, but my Instagram is
very private, as I'm sure a lot of people know,
because as we talked about last week, I don't need
a lot of people that follow y'all are followed me
getting in that. My kids on my Instagram a lot,
so I don't need a need that kind of exposure.
So if you're among the very few friends I have,
you can find me on instagramming judge. I wasn't looking
(27:22):
at I was not looking as good as uh Corey
Mose and Jeff Jones and Eric Henry, but I think
I held I think I looked I looked nice.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
You held your own as always, brother, You held your
own as always. But I want to talk about that
game because there were so many opportunities that were gone
by the wayside. You know, stopped four times on fourth down,
just not being able to punch that in. And the
conversation continues to be about the red zone offense. What
is your thought on that because Start gave us a
(27:52):
little little nugget the other day about how it went up,
but it didn't start off as well as we hope.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
In game one it did not.
Speaker 10 (28:02):
I think we do overshadow a little bit. I would
get this out Ohio State deep defenses absolutely, what kind
of talented players they have. But at the end of
the day, if you're Texas and you have national championship aspirations,
you got to get that job done.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
And they did not.
Speaker 10 (28:16):
Excuse me, that definitely gets them some stuff to work
on over the next couple A couple of weeks before
that Florida game, the fourth and one with Arch and
that kind of failed sneak was alarming if you're a
Texas fan, I think Steve has definitely had some things
he regrets about that, you know, going so quick kind
of doing that that sneak, not giving it to one
of those running backs he was averaging four and a
(28:37):
half yards of four and a half yards of carry
or getting Jared Gibson in there is kind of your
short yardage guy. He was a little predictable that Art
was going to try try sneak it there since he
had done it earlier earlier in the game on that
fourth and fourth and short. But you know, Ohio State,
it's a really good defense. Texas definitely has a lot
of film to look at over this, and I'm sure
(28:58):
Steve is going to continue to be annoyed by these
questions about his red zone offense. But the fact of
the matter is you're keeping these questions until you get done.
So we'll see in a couple leaps when they go
to Florida if things have improved. But there's definitely some
stuff that on filmed that they're definitely gonna need to
be pouring over these next few weeks.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Yeah, it's been interesting. We're talking to Danny Davis of
the Austin American Statesman. You can follow them at underscore
Danny Davis, but only on Twitter. Let me ask you this,
because you know you look at what the secondary has
been able to do. With the Texas football team, Coach
Stark talked about this game, this matchup this weekend. He
believes they're gonna throw the ball forty five to fifty
(29:40):
times if they have it that long. For San Jose
State University, what is your biggest, uh concern in their
passing game? Are we gonna be able to get to
the quarterback this game? Do you think there's gonna be
some sacks? Finally, is this gonna be one of those
games where we can check out little bit earlier?
Speaker 10 (30:02):
Well, if depends, aren't partying by have to have I
something We're going to kind of a very long discussion
next week. But you know, with the team expected to
throw it, you know, forty five fifty times, you'd imagine
there's going to be some opportunities to pressure the quarterbacks.
And the States does not have the offensive line that
Ohio State to pass. And I'll say it was also
doing a good job of some quick releases and not
(30:25):
you know, necessarily dropping Julian saying back there for five
hours and allowing Texas, you know, a lot of time
to get to the quarterback. But you'd imagine that Texas
is going to be able to get some pressure. It's
going to be a good touch with these defensive backs
who are probably you know, hungry for a chance actually
get some turnovers, which is something we didn't see in
Columbus last week. So I'd imagine just causantose State is
(30:47):
going to throw at forty five times does not mean
those are gonna be forty five good pass attempts. I'd
imagine that Texas is gonna, you know, have this game
wrapped up rather early, and that you know, some of
those past attemps are also going to be desperation attempts
at the end of the game. So maybe some of those
backup defensive backs get some get some time too.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
Well one of those backups, well he's going to be
a starter now, is Grace and Littleton. I can't wait
to continue to watch this young man grow and put
his stamp on what looks to be an awesome freshman year. Uh, Danny,
as always, man, we thank you for taking the time.
I'm glad that you saw some fight in your Colorado Rockies,
(31:25):
and I know you were mad at me a couple
of weeks ago because I was trying to get them regulated.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
You want to regulate.
Speaker 10 (31:33):
Want you to go relegate the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Do I have to suffer?
Speaker 10 (31:42):
Hey, I'm trying to take you out of your suffering
if we get rid of If we get rid of
the Cowboys, you don't have to suffer anymore.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
This to yourself. Go to church, have a nice day.
Speaker 7 (31:50):
Enjoy, Enjoy.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
Here there he is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
You can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis coming up next.
We're gonna top Major League Baseball as the playoffs are
getting closer and closer, and these teams are fighting for
that playoff spot right here on the morning kickoff on
(32:14):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. Those are great stuff by
our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Mark, Hey Harns, don't look now, but I think me
and Danny are friends.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
Yeah, well you didn't ask about Rory Harmon. So that's
the first step of a great relationship, hey, Mark, Because
you are out of town. Are great folks from the
Colachi factory have done an excellent job of bringing in breakfast.
Marcus got his little COLATCHI over there. I got my
(32:50):
little COLATCHI over there.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
I'm not happy. You know, I'm not happy. Yeah, enjoy yourself.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
You're going to grace some great food over there and
have some great time. But right now, hey, put me,
put me some in the refrigerator and put my name
on it. No, you are the main person that goes
in the refrigerator and take everybody else's stuff.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
You get no love.
Speaker 11 (33:15):
You're the reason why we put names on Someruth.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
Hey, look, I love Kalachi Factory. Man Like, put my
name on something. Man, No, my brother, you got to
get your own you know where there we go. Yeah,
that's what we're doing now. Well, when you.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
First said don't look now, I thought you were going
to talk about your Yankees in the way that they
are starting to play to get themselves back in their
hunt for the title. In the Al East, Toronto Blue
Jays have a two game lead two and a half
game lead over the Yankees and the Red Sox in
the AL East. But as you start to look at
(33:53):
the wildcard positioning, Toronto, Detroit, and Houston all are divisional leaders.
But now the Yankees are four and a half games
up in the Wildcard, as are the Boston Red Sox.
But it's coming down to the Seattle Mariners and the
Texas Rangers for that last playoff spot for the Wildcard.
(34:15):
The Rangers are a game and a half back behind
the Seattle Mariners, but hopefully they can catch them. Creeping
around there is the Kansas City Royals. They're trying to
make their way in the NL. The Brewers continue to
be one of the hottest teams in baseball. They have
now moved into the divisional leader at eighty five and
(34:37):
fifty four. Philadelphia Phillies are eighty and fifty eight and
the Los Angeles Dodgers are seventy eight and sixty. The
Cubs are five games up, so they should be able
to get into the playoffs. San Diego Padres are the
other team. Team of them that's on the edge is
the New York Mets. The Mets have a five game
(35:00):
lead over the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants,
so it looks like the NL is pretty much set.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
But mar you feel them to acknowledge the fact that
the Yankees have beat in the last three or four games.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
They beat the.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
Brewers and they beat the Astros teams that are ranked
above them.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
Yeah, well, you start to look at both of these
teams in the organization. Last night, the Yankees beat the
Astros seven to one. But the Astros the story of
the game was not the Astros losing to the.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Yankees.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
The story of the game last night was Framer Valdez
and what he did to his teammate that he said
was not intentional.
Speaker 3 (35:51):
So let me paint the picture for you.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Last night, Framer Valdez and his catcher had a disagreement
on what pitch they wanted to throw. Well, when you
start to look at it and you see him shake off,
and the catcher even told him before he threw the
pitch to step off the back of the mound, well
he was.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
Salazar was the catcher last night.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
Well, what ends up happening is Framer throws the pitch, Grisham,
hits the grand slam, and he rounds the bases. And
when after the grand Slam, he comes back and throws
what was supposed to be an off speed pitch, he
throws a two seam fastball sinker and hits his catcher
(36:34):
at home play. I'll retweeted on social media here in
just a minute.
Speaker 11 (36:39):
It was crazy. It was right over the middle of
the place. It was right over the middle of the play.
He was playing with danger. Yeah, because he could have.
He could have went yard with it too.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
Well.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
The thing that bothered me the most about the entire
setup was the fact that in that situation and you
cross a player up, you don't cross him up with
a fastball. You do not cross him up with that.
If you're gonna throw anything, you throw a breaking ball
that hits the dirt and that way he can at
least block it. If you're throwing a ninety five ninety
(37:09):
seven mile an hour fastball and he's thinking you're throwing
a breaking ball and he hits you in the chest,
that could be fatal. That's bad teammate. And after the
game they were both called into the office. He said
that they was not a mix up, that it was
a mix up. I was called I thought it was
called this pitch. I did not do that intentionally, but
(37:30):
it is an awful, awful look.
Speaker 11 (37:32):
It looked very intentional to me.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
Because he turned his back after he did it like
he was disgusted with him. And that right there showed
me a lot about Framer, who I've been fighting for
to be the cy young Ward. I mean, I wanted
him in the mix to be Picture of the Month
and Picture of the year.
Speaker 11 (37:51):
What Scaraby FROMBA is he would have these three four
games in a row, not giving giving up like one
urned rue t were on runs a less, and then
all of a sudden, you have a game like yesterday
he gives up six or seven.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
It was a bad, bad look all the way around.
But they are still leading their division and they're gonna
probably be winning it moving forward.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Hey, but I'm gonna tell you something that that pitch
he threw, I've never seen a more accurate pitch and
if it was a bullet, that it killed him because
it hid him right in the very center of his
chest protecting.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
Yeah, that probably was his best pitch of the night,
because the other ones were not very good.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Saying the least, he should get mad more. Our number
one is in the books.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Our number two is just around the corner. We've got
NFL football starting tomorrow and the Dallas Cowboys travel to Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
We'll also talk about.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
This week's football matchups and college football, and we also
have some college coaches that are mad at each other.
Explaining all of that a little bit later right here
on a way back Wednesday edition of the Morning Kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to our number two of the Morning Kickoff right here
(39:12):
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and our
number one. We got a chance to hear from the
Texas football team as the players talked about the focus
of next week and earning the trust of coach Sark.
We also have more from the Dallas Cowboy drama, as
we just found out that Jerry Jones really really did
(39:38):
some things that was uncool when it comes to negotiating
with the player, especially by not having his representing him.
We also heard from Danny Davis who was glad to
hear that there was some fight left in his Colorado
Rockies and speaking of that, we're getting closer and closer
to the MLB playoffs. We got Dallas Cowboy football tomorrow
(39:59):
night as to kick off the season against the Philadelphia Eagles.
We will be sports Radio AM thirteen hundred to Zone.
Myself and Bud Like will be at Armadilladen right there
off of Menshakam tomorrow night from seven to nine will
be giving away tickets to tomorrow or Saturday's game against
(40:19):
San Jose State will also be having a chance for
you to enter a couple of contests that will go
on all season long, with the grand prize winner getting
a huge prize at the end of the year. But
we will also hear from college coaches that are bickering
back and forth, and it's letting you know that football
season is here. But as you know, the Cowboys will
(40:42):
be playing tomorrow night in Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
It's a big batch up.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
There's a lot that has happened, new players on the team,
some gone new contracts that we're giving out in the
last couple of days. When you start to think about
what has happened, and it's been interesting because now you
have a first time head coach that is really excited
about his opportunity to be the head coach of the
(41:10):
Dallas Cowboys. But what is he going to do well,
He's got to try to keep his emotions in check.
Speaker 12 (41:16):
I think here's the way I view this, and it's funny.
I actually caught myself doing this the other day, our
bonus Monday. I kind of called the team up and
I kind of got a little firing and excited about
you know, playing the Eagles and primetime and all that stuff.
And I went to bed that and I was like,
what are you doing? Like you know better than that,
because honestly, the way we approach things, Todd is every
game we play is just another championship opportunity. It's just
(41:40):
another championship opportunity. We get a chance to go out
there against the Eagles. You don't get extra credit for
beating the Eagles in Philly on primetime than you do
for beating the Giants.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
At noon in at and T Stadium.
Speaker 12 (41:51):
So what I don't want these guys to do, and
I think the coaches are a big part of this,
is go in there and.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
Try so hard. We're playing the Eagles. I'm gonna do
so hard. I'm gonna they're gonna make mistakes that they
do that.
Speaker 12 (42:02):
Play free. It's football, fly around, love being around with
your your brothers. Man.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
Just run to the football, celebrate, have fun.
Speaker 12 (42:09):
And so again, it's gonna be pretty consistent throughout the
course of the deal. We're guaranteed seventeen of these. This
is the first one of that. I think our guys
will play well. But again, that's kind of going to
be my message most weeks.
Speaker 1 (42:23):
Well, the thing about that is we've heard all off season.
We've heard all training camp that the ultimate goal for
this team is to win the championship. But you're going
up against a team that has shown you and led
you in the way that it's supposed to happen. Now,
(42:43):
I can come out here and give you the stats
about what Dak's record is against Jalen Hurts, what's Dak's
record against the NFC East, and all things that are
part of that division. But the fact still remains, until
you can get back to the mountaintop, there is no
talking about championships. But Cede Lamb was asked about does
(43:10):
he plan on watching the Philadelphia Eagles as they raised their.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Banner in a ceremony tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
They're real they're gonna be celebrating their titled you know,
And I don't know if you have to watch the ceremony,
and now I'm.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
Gonna watch it. I'm gonna watch it.
Speaker 13 (43:24):
Shout out then for that shout out yet because I
still got brothers over there. You know what I'm saying,
It's not it's not really anything personal, but it's something
that I'm chasing. So what do you want to watch it?
Speaker 3 (43:37):
Motivation?
Speaker 1 (43:38):
Motivation, So the motivation of being a champion. All you
have to do is go and watch the Gambler and
America's team on Netflix. All you have to do is
understand that the Cowboys have not been in that situation
celebrating that is for almost thirty seasons. All you have
(44:01):
to do CD is talk to Michael Irvin and find
out what that is like. The reality of it all is.
Speaker 3 (44:10):
This is not your parents or.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
My Dallas Cowboys football team from yesteryear. This is a
team that is still dealing in turmoil. This is a
team that has been fielding questions about Michael Parsons instead
of fielding questions about this game tomorrow. There's been a
lot of opportunity for this Dallas Cowboy team. There's been
(44:37):
some highs where you thought you were about to get there,
and there's definitely been some lows where.
Speaker 3 (44:43):
You have no shot.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
After the trade, I had already made the wager of
Cowboys going over eight games or seven and a half games.
And the reason why I picked that is because there's
too much talent on this team. But I also thought
there was gonna be an edge rusher that has been
raised in havoc across the league since he's been in
(45:06):
it the twenty five.
Speaker 3 (45:08):
Year old player named Micah Parsons.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
But you still have Dak Prescott, you still have CD Lamb.
Speaker 3 (45:16):
And now George Pickens.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
But we still don't know what that offensive line is
going to look like against that menacing Philadelphia Eagles line.
You know why, because they haven't all played together.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
We still do not know. There's still questions.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
About the running game because you haven't had that sledge
hammer type of running back that can lead you. So
as far as all the optimism when it comes to
the Dallas Cowboys, I'm almost out of optimism. I'm more like,
we'll wait and see now, will I have on my
(45:54):
garb tomorrow my clown suit?
Speaker 3 (45:57):
You bet. I just can't quit him. I've tried. I've
wanted to.
Speaker 1 (46:03):
There's been emotional meetings that I've had to go or
post it on Facebook. I need an emotional support group
when it comes to this football team because I want
to leave them, but I just can't. I can't do it,
regardless if Jerry is there or not. I still like
(46:27):
the Dallas Cowboy. Not in love with him, not in
love anymore. I'm admiring from Afar.
Speaker 11 (46:37):
I don't know that type of dedication that is actually
in love dedication.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
The problem is, is you in a bad relationship. This
is the psycho love though.
Speaker 11 (46:46):
Yeah, you still love her, but it's like it's not
I love her, it's I love her.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
Yeah, yeah, that's a great way of doing it.
Speaker 3 (46:55):
Why I used to I love her, love her.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
Our boys are still there's still America's team in some
people's eyes, and it's it just gets to the point
of what I told Mark the other day, I said, look, man,
we went through the Campo years.
Speaker 3 (47:15):
We went through with that. That's all you need to
really say. I've been because that's how old I am.
Speaker 1 (47:21):
I've seen the mountaintop and I've seen the depths of hell.
Speaker 3 (47:26):
I am trying to find my way. You know what's funny.
Speaker 11 (47:30):
Remember when Cowboy fans was complaining about Barry Swissen.
Speaker 3 (47:34):
Yeah, championship, he wanted MS players. Yeah, that was.
Speaker 1 (47:39):
The complaint, but still yeah, but the fact of the
matter was that was the last time that the Cowboys
got to the top. And I feel like that game
on uh, the price is right with that little.
Speaker 3 (47:56):
Yeah going up the the hell and every time he
would stop.
Speaker 1 (48:05):
That's exactly what happens to Dallas cowboy fans every single
year because you sit there, you believe, you try to
back them, but yet and still you go into a
matchup against the champs and you look like you're not prepared. Well,
I'm not saying that's gonna happen. I don't believe that's
going to happen. I just understand what this looks like
(48:30):
because it happens every single year. And the beginning of
the season, everybody's like, oh yeah, everybody's happy, You're clean, dressed,
you're ready to go, got on your Sunday best. And
by the end of the season, you smoke. It's NBA season.
(48:51):
By the end of the season, you're sitting in a
corner at a bar smoking cigarettes and you don't even smoke.
You're shaking because you try to figure out why your
friends are pointing at you and making fun at you.
It is just a turmoil of seasons every single year.
Speaker 11 (49:11):
What's interesting is when I hear Shoty's comments is basically
he can do that for pretty much the beginning of
the season, because that's a robbery almost every like he
has with the Giants next week and I forget who
he played after that. But it's like either Robberies are
big games up until when they play the Jets, and
(49:31):
then nobody cares well.
Speaker 1 (49:33):
But you start to understand what it looks like and
you've seen it every coach. I mean, you could talk
about shoddy, but every coach talks like that at the
beginning of the season because nothing is put on tape.
Speaker 3 (49:46):
But then when that.
Speaker 1 (49:46):
Tape comes out and you got to go in and
look at all the missed assignments and missed opportunities, including
my boy Dak who somehow, some way throws an interception
at the wrong and opportune time, James, then you start
to see this downward struggle that continues to happen.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
But guess what, it's a new season. I'll be pumped
up and ready to go. Tomorrow the cow.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
Boys play the Philadelphia Egos.
Speaker 3 (50:17):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (50:18):
Coming up next, we're gonna talk upcoming games this weekend.
We'll look at the SEC. We'll also look at the
Sun Belt, and we'll look at the Big twelve on
all of these matchups. And then we'll also hear Craig's
interview with the coach of the San Jose I guess
they're the astecs right here.
Speaker 3 (50:38):
No, they're not they're not the ass techs Spartans.
Speaker 1 (50:41):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred the Zone coming up. In the next segment,
we'll we'll hear from San Jose head coach with Craig Way.
Speaker 14 (50:55):
Me.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
Let me say if I can pronounce this name right, Marcus.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
It's a lot going on on air ken Nia Mount Lolo.
Speaker 3 (51:02):
Yeah, there you go. It was easy.
Speaker 1 (51:04):
Nia Mount to Lolo will be joining Craig Way and
you will hear that interview in the next settlement fully sound.
Speaker 3 (51:12):
Yeah, yeah, you gotta make sure you do it.
Speaker 6 (51:13):
And uh.
Speaker 1 (51:14):
We'll continue those conversations as we prepare for a big
weekend against the San Jose State Spartans as they come
in OH to one after their loss to Central Michigan
last week. But Texas is OH to one as well
and they're trying to rebound after their fourteen to seven
loss to the number one ranked team Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (51:38):
Bud Guys. This weekend.
Speaker 1 (51:40):
There's not a lot of big marquee games that are
out there, so we're not going to dive too much
into some of those games, but I will talk about
this game in San Mark. I mean at utsa UTSA
heartfault loss to Texas and n this past weekend. They
(52:01):
went in there, they battled, they played hard, they did
what they needed to do, but they ended up losing
that game. Texas State ends up winning a big time
matchup last weekend at home. But now this is the
Battle of i thirty five. Texas State a lot of momentum,
but UTSA is a four and a half point favorite
(52:24):
and that game will be played at the Alamodome at
two thirty. The over under is sixty six and a half.
I'll give my picks out by Friday. This is going
to be a tough matchup. This is Jeff Trailer versus GJ.
Speaker 3 (52:38):
Kinney.
Speaker 1 (52:39):
This is a both teams are trying to find their
footing and see exactly who they are, kind of like
a lot of teams across the country of trying to
discover what type of football team that they're going to be.
Which way are you going to be able to put
your hat on and make sure that this team continues
(53:00):
to row. So that will be one of the big
matchups in the Big twelve. Iowa will be traveling to
Iowa State the Cyclones, number sixteen ranked team in the Land.
Three and a half point favored. That is an eleven
am kickoff. It is over under forty one and a half.
Look take the under. Take the under because Iowa still
(53:25):
can't score points. They have never been able to score points.
It is a putriot offense that just never finds a
way to get it done. Iowa State tough, hard nos
football team. This is a rivalry within the state of Iowa,
so you know that this one is going.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
To be tough.
Speaker 1 (53:46):
The Baylor Bears travel to number seventeen SMU. SMU is
number seventeenth ranked team. I mean, they always find a
way to get it done. I was talking to our
guy Wisdom Anderson last Saturday and he was talking about
being up at SMU this summer. Loved the facilities, love
the way they trained, saw all the players, and believe
(54:10):
that this is going to be a tough football team.
And that's the reason why they've been playing at an
elite level. Their three point favorite. But Baylor put up
a lot of points last weekend. But the one thing
about the Baylor Bears, they cannot stop the run. And
that's why the over under is sitting at sixty five
and a half. I more than likely take the over
(54:32):
because both of these teams are going to score points.
Now we'll talk about this a little bit later, but
Oklahoma State taking on Oregon. Oregon is a twenty eight
and a half point favor And when I was telling
you about the conversation about coaches going at each other,
this was one of those situations right there. This is
(54:54):
a big time matchup where Mike Gundy, who at one
point had a lot of money in the program T
Boom Pickings, was a rip to T Boom, but he
was the guy that was funding that entire university.
Speaker 3 (55:10):
He did so much there.
Speaker 1 (55:12):
And Dan Lanning at Oregon with Nike has been doing
a lot of amazing things, getting best players in the
country to go there, doing some good stuff. But they're
going back and forth, and I'll set that up for
a little bit later in the show, but you're gonna
want to hear these two going at it because Mike
(55:32):
Gundhy talking about people buying players when he refuses to
do it. Better get on board, Dabo Sweeney Junior, because
that's what ended up happening. This game is fifty eight
and a half over under. Oregon is favored by twenty
eight and a half. If that doesn't tell you something
you were missing. What's going on? Then you look at
(55:55):
the sec you start with number twenty.
Speaker 3 (55:59):
Ole Miss going to Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (56:02):
Now Kentucky Texas will make that trip there, and Kentucky's
a team that scares me, especially at home. They are
a team that is solid all the way around. This
may not be their best Kentucky team, may not be
their worst Kentucky team, but this is gonna be a
team that is gonna go out there and fight. Wait,
(56:24):
and then you look at what Ole Miss is able
to do. Ole Miss ten and a half point favorite,
ranked number twenty. This game tips off at kicks off
at two thirty. Over under is fifty and a half points.
I'm gonna take the over in that as well.
Speaker 10 (56:44):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (56:45):
Then you have Kansas versus Missouri. Missouri is a six
and a half point favorite. That game kicks off at
two thirty over under fifty one and a half. I
really like what I saw last week from Kansas. Kansas
is a tough football team. Jaydon Daniels is healthy. He
is ready to go. So I think this game with
(57:06):
six and a half points, I think it will be
a little bit tighter because I truly don't know how
I could judge Missouri just yet, but I would definitely
take the over in that foot ball game and the
place that game day will be on Saturday Norman, Oklahoma,
as the number fifteenth ranked Michigan Wolverines will come and
(57:29):
play the number eighteenth rank Oklahoma Sooners, who the Sooners
are a five and a half point favor and that
game kicks off at six thirty forty six and a
half point spread. So let me ask you this, after
you watched their quarterback John Matteer go out last week
(57:50):
and ball out of control, set the table four touchdown passes,
was able to run around.
Speaker 3 (57:57):
Played, well, do you you roll with them?
Speaker 1 (58:02):
Or do you look at Michigan and say, hey, you
got Blair Underwood.
Speaker 3 (58:06):
Is that his name, Blair?
Speaker 1 (58:07):
No, that's that other TV star Underwood as the quarterback.
And Bryce Underwood and what he was able to do
in his first game as a true starter, true freshman,
looked like he was composed, threw the ball well, zipping
it all over the field. But this will be a
true test for him in his first big time matchup.
(58:32):
You know, people are talking about some of these other
guys and what they were able to do in the
early part of it, and the success that they had,
and the reason why they were talking about the success
is because they had I'm not going to say cupcake games,
but they did have some games that are more leaning
towards the layup side of things. So when you look
at the numbers that were being put up, everybody wasn't
(58:54):
playing the same type of matchup that Texas was playing
that LSU and Clemson were playing. I mean, there was
enough Top ten matchups the number nine versus number ten,
I mean, there were some matchups that were a little
bit tougher than some of these other guys that went
out there and put up these big numbers. Now, the
true test is about to start taking place. So when
(59:16):
you look at the game this weekend and you're looking
at the Texas game and you're saying, oh man, look
you're here. Oh tixis was players to hose state. They
should do that. You're right, they should do that. So
let them go out there and do that. Because they
just went on the road and played the defend the
national champion and they could have beat them in a
(59:37):
defensive struggle. So there's opportunities there. There were some missed opportunities,
and I promise you the coverage that Art saw this
past week, he won't see again this year because.
Speaker 3 (59:48):
Unless he plays Ohio State and playoffs.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
Ohio State had the best athletes out there.
Speaker 3 (59:55):
They are like minded people.
Speaker 1 (59:57):
This is what this looks like when you're playing against
teams like this.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
This is how that goes down.
Speaker 1 (01:00:03):
So don't get it twisted when you start to look
at what Texas is able to do this weekend. It
is a must for them to get to that level.
So we shall see. We'll continue the conversations more and
more as we get closer to game time. But next
we're gonna have a conversation. You're gonna hear the conversation
that Craig Way had with the head coach of the
(01:00:27):
San Jose State Spartans, ken Nia Matalolo. As this conversation
rolls on here on a Way Back Wednesday edition of
the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:00:40):
This is over. It's a way Back Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (01:00:43):
But this is an opportunity right now for us to
listen to an interview that our guy, Craig Way, the
voice of the Texas Longhorns, who you can hear from
two to five pm every single day right here on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundredth of Zone did with the
head coach of the San Jose Spartans, Kitten Nea Matalolo.
Speaker 15 (01:01:08):
Yeah, Coach, one thing I've always heard other coaches say
is the biggest improvement comes from game one to game two. A.
Are you a subscriber to that philosophy? And B what
are the things that you did like out of game
one as well as the things that you do endeavor
to see improvement on for game number two.
Speaker 14 (01:01:31):
Well, I definitely subscribe to that. I feel like, I mean,
you definitely do make a ton of improvement from game
one to game two. You know, obviously in college there's
no preseason like how you have an NFL. I think
number one, I mean, which has always been something the
teams that try to coach is just make sure we
take care of the ball.
Speaker 6 (01:01:49):
And we lost that three zero.
Speaker 14 (01:01:52):
Last last week, and it was surprising that we're still
in the game. I mean, normally, when you lose a
turnover battle three to zero, me get blown out. So
I didn't like that, but I like the fact that
our kids battled. I mean, we had two sulgos at
the end. Have an opportunity to win.
Speaker 6 (01:02:10):
H So our kids, you know, I love their grids.
Speaker 14 (01:02:14):
And so we got we gotta prove it, you know,
for us to have any kind of shot. I mean,
we turned the ball over three times this week, it's
going to be one hundred and zero.
Speaker 15 (01:02:22):
Well, one thing that I did notice is that you've
had teams, not only the team last year at Santase State,
but also in your time in Navy where you were
you had guys who got takeaways for you and for
you to be that close without a takeaway as well
as given the three I know that that probably registers
with you and with the coaching staff as well. Is
(01:02:43):
there a key on being able to garner turnovers to
get takeaways from that opponent?
Speaker 14 (01:02:51):
Yeah, last year we were pretty good. I mean last
year we were tired for the country and going into
the last game with you know, over second and interceptions,
so did a really good job.
Speaker 6 (01:03:00):
Of getting them.
Speaker 14 (01:03:03):
Obviously we had too many last last year. We had
too many the first week. But you know, we're doing
our best to make sure that we take care of
the ball. And like I said, we've definitely got take
care of the ball this week to have any simbilance
of hope. But we're always working on getting turnovers. I
mean it's something that you always work on. Everybody has it.
You go to everybody's practice round the country. Everybody has
(01:03:25):
tackling circuits and things that you try to, you know,
practice in practice and hopefully they come to fruish in
the game.
Speaker 15 (01:03:33):
I would think that everybody across the country knows about
Jordan Pollard and he's a known commodity for you and
for him to get fifteen tackles in a season of
it looks like he picked up right where you left off.
How how special a player is Jordan, Well, he's he's.
Speaker 14 (01:03:50):
A natural football players. I mean he's a football player.
He's got great instincts.
Speaker 6 (01:03:54):
He can run.
Speaker 14 (01:03:55):
Sideline the sideline. He's physical, he's smart. He's been in
this defense for so.
Speaker 6 (01:03:59):
Long, so he knows all the intricacies.
Speaker 14 (01:04:02):
I mean he's well versed how the front works. You
know how ties in the front ties into the back end,
and all linebackers have to be able to do that.
You got to be able to tie in the front
seven to the back end. And he knows that seamlessly.
He knows where all the gaps are you know who's
sitting there. You know who's got leverage on.
Speaker 6 (01:04:19):
The ball, who sit and edge?
Speaker 14 (01:04:20):
And I think it's because of his knowledge of the defense.
He's got some match of instincts and you know, his athleticism,
you know, make some of the players.
Speaker 15 (01:04:29):
Who is how important is it to have a guy
a veteran like Walker you get to be able to
perform for you at the quarterback spot, having a guy
who is comfortable in that role and who really posted
numbers for.
Speaker 3 (01:04:41):
You last year.
Speaker 14 (01:04:43):
Yeah, I thought Walker came on strong last year. He
didn't start the season, you know, so I thought he
came on strong. You know, we're counting on his leadership,
you know, this year, and we're hoping you didn't. You know,
in his standards, he didn't have the greatest game in
Game one, you know, But I I have every faith
in the kid that I trust him. We put a
(01:05:04):
lot on a quarterback's plate. I carry offense.
Speaker 6 (01:05:06):
I mean, every quarterback, you know, there's.
Speaker 14 (01:05:08):
A lot on their plate. I'm sure cost And puts
a lot on Art's plate. So it's it's part of
the position. And you know, I trust the kid and
him for him to play well. I trusted him pretty well.
Speaker 15 (01:05:19):
I got to ask you about Danny Scudero because here's
a guy who was a newcomer and he has nine
catches for one undred and eighty nine yards and a touchdown.
For you, did you expect that kind of production an
impact from him stepping into this first game?
Speaker 14 (01:05:34):
Well, he's a he's a tough kid.
Speaker 6 (01:05:36):
I mean, he works hard, you know what I mean.
Speaker 14 (01:05:38):
He's a he's a local kid, you know, so we're
really excited that he's here. And uh yeah, he's I
mean he loves who the kid is as a young man,
and this kid that works hard.
Speaker 6 (01:05:48):
All the time.
Speaker 15 (01:05:49):
Let me get your thoughts on the University of Texas.
What is it that really strikes you when you look
at the Loghartons on on your digital on your video.
Speaker 14 (01:05:58):
Well, I watched, you know, upset.
Speaker 6 (01:06:00):
I watched all the game live last week.
Speaker 14 (01:06:03):
And I've been to the Horseshoe. I've played there and
so I know how loud it is there and what
kind of environments there. But they have the one and
two teams playing in that environment, it's a tough environment.
Speaker 6 (01:06:17):
I thought they played well. I mean I was a
slug fest. I was like a.
Speaker 14 (01:06:22):
Old AFC you know, playoff.
Speaker 6 (01:06:25):
Game, you know what I mean, where.
Speaker 14 (01:06:27):
You know the Steelers and the Ravens are battling to the.
Speaker 6 (01:06:30):
End, you know what I mean. And just so I.
Speaker 14 (01:06:34):
Mean, those are two teams. You know you watch them.
I mean, those are two playoff teams. You know, the
talent wise, they're obviously got elite coaches, but you.
Speaker 6 (01:06:44):
Know, play here or there.
Speaker 14 (01:06:46):
You know, you know the Longhorns could want. And so
what I saw is what I expected to see. The
talented team, this well coached, that was a player two
away from you know, coming away with the victory at
a tough place to play. I mean, you're playing on
the road. So first first game, I mean we struggled
in our first game. We were at home and you
(01:07:07):
know we didn't play Ohio State. So yeah, everything I
saw is what I expect to see. And super talented group,
world coached, and yeah, it's gonna be a tough matchup
for us.
Speaker 15 (01:07:20):
One other thing I wanted to ask you is playing
a game like this against an opponent like this and
playing on the road. Obviously you want your guys to
come out of it healthy. What it is also the
benefit you see when you play an opponent like Texas
on the road. Is that something that you see can
help you when you get in a Mountain West Conference
(01:07:41):
play on down the road.
Speaker 14 (01:07:43):
Yeah, because you know, the kids get to see the standard,
you know what I mean, Because every kid that plays
college football wants to play at the highest level, wants to,
you know, make it to the playoffs, wants to go
to an NFL.
Speaker 6 (01:07:56):
And then when you play at.
Speaker 14 (01:07:58):
You know, a team like Texas, then you see.
Speaker 6 (01:08:00):
What it is. You see what an elite.
Speaker 14 (01:08:03):
Program is, you see what elite players are. And so
you know, obviously you know everybody plays teams like that.
You're excited to play them because you recognize the teams
like that or the standard and you get to measure
kind of where you're at from that standpoint. And so
I mean, you're always excited, you know what I mean, because,
like again, just to who they are and what they represent,
(01:08:25):
you know, and college football and the standards that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
They're There's that interview with Craig Way and the head
coach of the San Jose Spartans, Can Matalolo, and the
thing about it is you start to understand.
Speaker 3 (01:08:40):
What it looks like, right, what this is supposed to
be like.
Speaker 1 (01:08:44):
And every single time you hear other coaches talk about
the standard. Texas is the standard in so many other programs.
Adds as far as being one of those schools that
has a lot of talent there, but talent has to
show up this weekend because that team, I guarantee you,
is just not coming in here to be out there,
(01:09:06):
just to be out there. They're trying to get out
there and make a name for themselves. We're gonna close
out the show and send you to Dan Patrick. But
I told you about coaches bickering with each other. That's right,
I use that word, and two of the best went
at it. And also I'll tell you all about the
Dan Lanning response to Mike Gundy right here on the
(01:09:30):
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred design. What
a great, great show we had today, Danny Davis of
the Austin American Statesman joining us talking baseball and of
course talking to Texas football as we get ready for
the weekend. Shout out for Mark Henry, who is a
world traveler. He had to go and do another meeting,
(01:09:53):
but he will definitely be on tomorrow and then be
with us for the rest of the time being. Also,
if you missed any parts of the show, make sure
you get over to the podcast page and tune in
and make iHeartRadio and AM thirteen hundred the Zone your
presets on your phone and of course in your car.
(01:10:14):
So it's just like when you get in your car
and you push the button and it's already there. You
want to make sure that you have AM thirteen hundred
the Zone on every single day. Because we heard from
Rachel Nichols, who was part of the Colin cow Herd
Show today as she talked about the Jerry Jones contracts
(01:10:35):
and how if he would have got ahead of it,
things would.
Speaker 3 (01:10:38):
Have been a little bit different. In Dallas.
Speaker 1 (01:10:40):
The Cowboys will take on the Philadelphia Eagles tomorrow. Come
and hang out with me as I will be at
the arm of Dilo Den down there off of Men's
Shakam tomorrow from seven to nine myself, the Zone crew,
and some folks and representatives from Bud Like gives you
a chance to win a couple of tickets to the
(01:11:01):
Texas in San Jose State game this weekend eleven am kickoff.
You can start your day by tuning in to the
third and Long podcast as they preview the game. Follow
by a live show between myself, Cam Parker and of
course the world's strongest man, d Mark Henry.
Speaker 3 (01:11:21):
From Bevo Boulevard.
Speaker 1 (01:11:23):
As we get ready to kick off the first home
game for the Texas Longhorns, make sure you tune in
tomorrow as we will have Eric Henry of Horns two
four seven that will be joining us. At seven point thirty,
we'll have Drew Martin the.
Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
I guess.
Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
He's in charge of external affairs over at the University
of Texas and he is always fun to talk to.
And in our Legends of the Locker Room segment, we
have the one and only TJ. Ford will be joining
us in our special segment Legends of the Locker Room
(01:12:01):
as he has an event that will be going on
this Friday in Austin, Texas, so he wants to talk
about that, preview this year's basketball team and give his
thoughts on Sean Miller and what he's been able to do.
Also this weekend for Texas basketball fans, there's a big
time two big time recruits that will be in town
(01:12:22):
visiting the University of Texas, so hopefully they can get
some commitments. One of them just happens to be the
brother of our starting left tackle Trevor Gooseby. His little
brother Austin Goozby, who is one of the top players
in the country, is being recruited by Texas and he
will be in this weekend as well.
Speaker 3 (01:12:43):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
I told you about the bickering between coaches and Dabo Sweeney,
who if you listen to the comment, Dabo was actually
being I thought fair with his assessment of the game
between LSU and Clemson, but Brian Kelly took it as
a shot. And this is what Brian Kelly and Dabbo
(01:13:06):
Sweeney had to say.
Speaker 3 (01:13:07):
The whole game, down the last play, right out of
the gate. It's like getting the final exam Day one
a class. They made a sixty five, we made a
fifty eight. They won. Oks were great.
Speaker 16 (01:13:21):
We dominated him in the second half. So he's either
a really good greater for you know, giving himself a
fifty eight, or he's a really hard greater on us,
or he didn't see the second half, which that might
be the case. He might not have wanted to see
the second half.
Speaker 1 (01:13:39):
Taking a shot there, but I thought Dabo was being
genuine when he said, hey, both of us didn't play
our best football game.
Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
We just played.
Speaker 1 (01:13:47):
One team played good enough to win and the other
one did not. And I'm sure coach Sark and coach
Ryan Day could say the same thing about their matchup
because it's two highly contested people.
Speaker 11 (01:13:57):
He was just saying, y'all are a lot better than
y'all show right, he say y'all are terrible.
Speaker 3 (01:14:02):
He just said, I know they're a lot better than that. Yeah,
it was a little different take.
Speaker 1 (01:14:07):
But Brian Kelly, who I know that a lot of
people don't like Brian Kelly and for whatever reason it is,
that's the reason why. And they moved on from that.
So it was interesting to see that. But here's the
other one. So Oklahoma State is traveling to Oregon. Mike
Gundhy on the radio show U This After or Yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
Who. Mike Gundhy can rub people the wrong way too.
Speaker 1 (01:14:34):
He is one of those guys that he don't care
what he's gonna say, what he thinks, and he had money,
but he refuses to spend the money to go and
get a good football team, which is why he wants
to show everybody I'm a good coach no matter what's
going on. So during the radio show, he said, we're
considered covering We're considering covering up our Nike logos with
(01:14:56):
Duck tape on Saturday. I'm just not interested in that
pay to win stuff that's going on up there, So
why should I support it? Well, Dan Lanning decided, well,
let me tell you why you need to support it.
Speaker 17 (01:15:12):
There is listening to him him talk like I said,
I got a ton of respect for coach Gundy. You know, ultimately,
how blessed are we to be in a place that's
invested in winning. If you want to be a top
ten team in college football, you better be invested in winning,
and we spend to win.
Speaker 3 (01:15:25):
Some people say to have an excuse for why they don't.
Speaker 17 (01:15:28):
Right, and ultimately like he's a great coach, They've done
an unbelievable job. But I want to be a team
that's competing at the highest level and we're really fortunate
to be in that situation. So I can't speak on
their situation. I have no idea. You know what's what
they got in their pockets over there. I'm sure U T.
Martin maybe didn't have as much as them last week
and they played, so we'll let it play out.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
Him is fighting words, But you know what, I like it.
I like it all the kumbai ya and the best
friend stuff football season. Hey, man, I'm trying to rip
your head off. You can say what you want to say.
In that game, he's mouthing off. I think what he
