We're not giving away any tickets today because the concert
was last night, so we'll have all that resuming tomorrow.
But right now, I want to get into Texas Softball.
Texas Softball with a three nothing victory. Now they will
face their arrival Oklahoma. As Oklahoma hits a walk off
(02:35):
home run in their final at bat other day, and
now Texas Oklahoma redeem their rivalry once again. UCLA hit
a walk off and Texas Tech gets their first ever
World Series victory behind a one to nothing victory behind
(02:57):
their stud picture Najari Kennedy. She is an absolute stuff.
We talked about how much money she's made one point
five million dollars to transfer from Stanford to Texas Tech,
and all she did was deliver. You gotta tip your
cap to her and what Texas Tech has been able
(03:20):
to do.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
To get there.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
But we're here to talk about Texas Softball and what
better way to get the party started than a home
run by Jolie Mitchell.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
To two counts on Mitchell. She's wing the high drive
left field that goes Otis.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
She looks up and Jolie Mitchell puts the Longhorns on
the board of the seconds. Jolie Mitchell home run number
(03:56):
fifteen RBI number sixty one of this season, and the
six year senior starts the scoring on a pitch that
leaked right over the heart of the plate at the Belts.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Andrew Haynes, you can hear him. You heard him here
on Am thirteen hundred the zone. But Mitchell was not done.
She decided one, maybe two is better.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Two one ring the flyball center field, that goes Kendrick
fallby to the warning track.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
She looks up, leaps and it is gone.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Jolie Mitchell does it again to nothing.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Texas, when they tell you to hit a home run,
they said, when you speak of me, speak of me. Well,
you heard that click clack, that ball went back. Then
she had a lot of power. But we heard him
talk about it. If Mitchell hits one, you know Stewart
has to get one too.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Stay on pitch, fly.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Ball right field. That's hit well and that's out of here.
That took back for Texas three.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Nothing, and that was what the final score was.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
He can conve doing her thing, going out and pitching
a complete game. And now, as we said, we wait
for them to take on Oklahoma on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
And you know my favorite thing about the game was
is when she hit the home run, she pointed at
her in the dugout.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
I can do it too.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, well, and mentioned when she hit her first home runs,
she gave him saying, he he I told you I
was gonna get me one.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
So that's that. You know, South habits one.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
That's the main thing, and it's easy to have fun
when you go to the College World Series.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
That's what I guess, that's what the goals are all about.
And they continue to find a way to get it done.
As I said, Oklahoma is one of those teams that
you you just know that if that if they're in
striking distance, somehow, some way, they lock in and they
get it done. But Texas will get a chance to
face them on Saturday. But I want you to hear
(05:57):
Jolie Mitchell after the game on her two home runs.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
I think it was pretty awesome. I didn't hit a
home run last year, and so that was kind of
my personal goal for this year. But now I just
got to keep moving forward and meet a good teammate.
That's now that's the forefront of my focus for the
next week.
Speaker 6 (06:12):
I know that my teammates have my back, I have.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Theirs, and I'm really confident that we can keep going
forward together.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
We had a we had a disagreement before the show,
and I told you that I felt like I was actually,
for once in my life, happy that Oklahoma won a
game because I won't revenge showed me out.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
So make sure and let everybody know your son goes. No, no, no,
I ain't got none of you throwing you throwing gasoline
goes to Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
You are throwing gasoline on that Texas fire, and I
ain't trying to have none of it. I don't want
no smoke. All I'm saying is I want revenge. I
would have to face my rival and have a chance
to redeem a loss that I had trouble sleeping with
(07:09):
than to face a team that's not right in my face.
Yeah they're in the in the SEC, but they are not.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
They don't have the long term.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
I say hatred.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
That's the only word that That's the first word that
came to my mind.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
I want to beat film Harsh more than I want
to beat anybody else.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Well, I made it said for Arkansas, but I'm just
saying I want them. I want to I want a chance,
And you said.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
No, don't let if we got a chance to let
Oklahoma go down, let them go down Exactly.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
I wanted them to come through the loser's bracket. I
wanted them to have to earn it. But as I'm
sitting there watching the game and one of my one
of my former teammates and god play ball with and
against for a long time. His daughter is the first
basement for Oklahoma, Sydney Saunders, And I'm watching this game
(08:06):
and I'm telling my entire family, I'm like, this.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Could get ugly. Oklahoma is a team that every the.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Picture for Tennessee was absolutely dealing, dealing, throwing some of
the hardest pitches in softball history, seventy three killing it.
And I said, yeah, but she gave them an opportunity.
And when they got a base hit up the middle
to put runners on first and third, the coach the boar.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Not the boar. I'm thinking of hockey. We'll get into
hockey a little bit later.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
But I'm sitting there looking at this coach and I'm like,
don't pitch to her. She's already put one in the stands.
And she do it, fastball, strike one. And I looked
at you, I looked at my mother in law and
I said, oh, yeah, we're back.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
And that's what Oklahoma is.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
They just have that mindset of we're not done until
the final pitch is made.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
It's sure enough straight away center field.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
And as soon as soon as the picture, let it go,
she felt like she was on frozen. Let it go,
let it go, and all of a sudden they walk
them off. So now we have the matchup Texas versus Oklahoma,
and you're right, we're here.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Now we're here.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
This is where the two teams that came into the
SEC are both in the College World Series, both representing
a rivalry that is like no other. But the only
problem that I really truly have about this is that
(10:02):
they have to.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Play each other to get to the World Series bracket.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Exactly if you like we said the top two teams,
I mean that top bracket was all SEC teams and
the one SEC team that you know is just happy
to be there was Ole miss and they lost one
to nothing to.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Texas Tech oh Man and the picture of the Year.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
They don't they don't let us figure out what the bracket.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
That's probably a good thing for us not to be
a part of that. Yeah, I don't want to be
on that committee anyway.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
But all I'm saying is what a unbelievable matchup, what
an unbelievable start to the College World Series and postseason.
Baseball and softball are are so so vital, uh and
and it gives us so much energy. And it's always
(10:58):
good when your team, uh, your teams that you cover
are involved in it, exactly because now you're talking first
hand knowledge. And that's why at the top of the
eight o'clock hour, we will have head coach Mike White
coming on to talk with us about what all transpired
yesterday and looking forward to the matchup with Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
We're just getting started on.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
The feel Good Playball Friday edition of the Morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
When we come back, we'll talk Nicks as they push
it to Game five, and of course the Dallas Stars.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
We're gonna talk that hockey folks.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. We're just getting started right here
on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Mike Harball hards and the World' Strongest Man
WWE Hall of Famer the Mark Henry and our guy
Marcus behind the boards and coming up In the next segment,
we'll talk Texas baseball as they get ready to host
(12:00):
the Austin Regional with Houston Christian as their first opponent.
They will be playing at one pm today at the Dish.
You can listen to the game right here on AM
thirteen hundred The Zone with Craig Way and Roger Wallace.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Pregame.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
We'll start at twelve forty five, but we'll be talking
to Zach simoororrangebloods Dot coming up in the next segment.
Right now, let's talk NBA basketball. The Knicks push it
to a Game five after a one eleven to ninety
four victory. Jalen Brunson did Jalen Brunson things, Tyrese Halliburton
(12:43):
came back to life, and I truly believe, honestly that
they want to get back home so they can win
in front of their home crowd. I know, it's kind
of one of those things that you don't want to lift.
Look at gift horse in the mouth. You want to
make sure that you handle your business. But there was
no way last night with that New York crowd that
(13:04):
New York was going to lay down.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
And Jalen Brunson went to work four and a.
Speaker 7 (13:10):
Half in the first quarter, and right cow Town's got
up on that kicking ball.
Speaker 6 (13:18):
He has been a first quarter machine tonight.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
Jalen Brunson finally gets one to go and that's Indiana
pushing the ball on the meat shot.
Speaker 8 (13:28):
Indiana needs to get the tempo off, but pumpson and cruises.
Speaker 9 (13:32):
Just way for two and a foul for the problem
with that drive right there by Brunson is niece Smith.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
He was looking for crumching. We'll grab that rebound and
took it the other way. I'm the three to play
in the third brunch.
Speaker 8 (13:47):
Him with a three and the foul and the foul
twenty nine for Jalen Punson fifteen in the third day, with.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
All the foul.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Trouble in the paper, unbelievable performance once again. He finished
the night with a thirty two point performance, twelve of
eighteen from the field, four of seven from three and
he didn't lay down on the ground as much as
I thought he was going to.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Why would you?
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Why do you keep on getting on that guy? By
getting a flopper? He put hisself in position to challenge guys,
and they always get right in his face because he's
a smaller guy, and they feel like, oh, I'm a
bullying but.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
He steps up to the bully in he wants it.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
He wants all the smoke hit me if you want to, right,
And I don't know you saw it on that four
point play? Did he flop on that or did he
get almost a viscerated?
Speaker 1 (14:48):
He did not get almost so viscerated. But okay, I'll
let you have it. He's Shannon bros.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Say.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
It was a home game hole, so dramatic. But here's
the deal. It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. But here's
the deal. When you get into those situations and your
back is against the wall, you have to come out and.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Be ready to fight.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
And that's exactly what they were able to do. And
they did that and now they go back to the
the they go back to Indianapolis. So I believe that
this series is officially over because let's put.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
It like this. If they get the win, they get
the win.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Uh at uh the Knicks get the win in Indianapolis,
then it is over for Indy. All the hype and
the glory.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
It will go back to Indy. I mean, we go
to New York. If it goes back to.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
New York, it's over. It's over for for Indy. That's
why I Indy know they got it. They cannot let
them off. You had them on the hook. They are
who we thought they are exactly. You got to make
sure you get that done so it'll be it'll be interested.
So it was a tough, tough game. As I said,
Karl Anthony Towns, he had his moments, but he was
(16:08):
positive last night.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Thirteen rebounds.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Eleven of those thirteen rebounds were on the defensive end,
so it didn't give them a second chance opportunity. He
finished with twenty four points. I talked about Michel Bridges.
He finally decided and og Unknobly, who has been the
lifeblood basically is what you would want to call him.
(16:33):
He wasn't good from three, but he too was playing
tough defense and trying to stop Halliburton did not have
a good game.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
But I'm gonna tell you something, Heart elevated his play,
especially defensively.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Heart was playing. He was the guy that I felt
like was the glue played. He played Halliburton a lot more,
played in.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Very physical, got a couple of foules that he shouldn't
have gotten, but he also distributed the ball. Well, so
like you saw Hart inside the paint kicking the ball
and hustling, diving for balls.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Keeping the ball alive.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Like that's that's what the Knicks have to do to
beat Indeed, every time, if they don't get a valiant performer,
uh on the on the hustling side of Dennis Rodman
type performance, then they're gonna lose. Yeah, it's gonna it's
gonna be important for them to to lock in and
get ready as they try to advance they try to
(17:35):
advance this series.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Because I'm just gonna.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Tell you this, Indy knew that they weren't getting any calls.
Lyles Turner was on the bench complaining about we're not
getting any calls and and one of his teammates told
them it don't matter about the calls. You gotta get stops.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
You gotta make sure you play solid defense.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
And last night it was just like I said, it
was one of those games. I knew from the very
beginning they were just gonna play the game out.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
It looked like they were just playing to just to play. Yep.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
And I'm gonna tell you something, You're not gonna get
another game where Halliburton scores under double digit.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
You're not gonna get it. It's not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
And so when you start to understand what is happening
in that moment, it kind of changes the narrative. As
I said before, I don't like the way that the
lineup is set up for the next they got. They
were beneficial yesterday, but if they tried to play that
same lineup for the third time in a row, people
obviously will understand how they're they're managing that. And so
(18:35):
that's one of the things too that I was looking at.
You know, we talked about Mitchell Robinson starting. I saw
exactly what was going on. But the whole point of
him is to get extra stops and then to put
more of a defensive pressure on the bigs for Indy
being that you got Miles Turner down there. Like I don't,
(18:59):
I don't think that you should.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
They should do it for.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
A long period of time, but you know, you bring
Mitchell Robinson in in eight ten minute stretches and then
sit him and then let KR Anthony Towns play the
center so they can have more of an offensive presence.
And that's what they did. So I think now that
they found the balance it's okay to start, Mitchell Robinson. Yeah,
but eight to twelve minutes at the moment, yeah, minimum
(19:26):
of tales minutes.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Well, the question was asked about the effort that was
given by the Indiana Pacers, and Greg Doyle of the
Indianapolis Star was asking Pascal Siakam, and Siakam was trying
to I guess find out what the heck he was
talking about?
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Report on.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
How much fait was? I guess what did they do?
Speaker 9 (19:49):
Especially on the no they played harder than us? I
think I think they played harder than us, you know,
on loose balls like rebounce like all that.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
We gotta we gotta be able to win that that battle.
Speaker 10 (20:03):
How can you can you make sense of it?
Speaker 11 (20:06):
Brother?
Speaker 6 (20:07):
Us don't play the games level way. You know to
day you're saying they played hard when you guys you
fla the hard melt?
Speaker 5 (20:13):
How is that possible?
Speaker 3 (20:14):
What you mean?
Speaker 6 (20:15):
How did powful hard game?
Speaker 3 (20:18):
What he's talking about? They played harder than us? It's okay,
we played hard, but they played harder.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
What's what?
Speaker 3 (20:23):
What's your point?
Speaker 6 (20:24):
I don't get it.
Speaker 12 (20:25):
What did you're saying?
Speaker 3 (20:26):
You gotta go out and I'm saying.
Speaker 9 (20:27):
That happens in the game. Doing that's basketball, saying you're good,
You're good, bro. You're looking for something I know I
have never but damn no, no, but I'm I'm telling
you though I told you.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
What else you want me to tell you?
Speaker 12 (20:45):
What you tell me?
Speaker 13 (20:46):
How that's all?
Speaker 1 (20:47):
That's homestall?
Speaker 6 (20:48):
What about you telling me?
Speaker 3 (20:50):
Okay, let's go ahead. Who's this Guy's.
Speaker 6 (20:57):
You get?
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Please? Who is this guy? Who is the guy?
Speaker 14 (21:08):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (21:09):
What's your boy? Connor McGregor?
Speaker 13 (21:11):
He is?
Speaker 15 (21:12):
What up?
Speaker 3 (21:13):
Black is this guy?
Speaker 6 (21:15):
Listen?
Speaker 3 (21:16):
We've got to play what you did for Marcus.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
You have to play the audio of what he did
to Caton cart and also to illustrate who he is
as an interviewer, because the guy is he's an antagonist.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
He does it intentionally. This is not the first time
that he's got a star. Round up guy.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
My guy Matt just hit us up on social media
and he said, don't listen to Doyle, trust Kent Sterling
from Bloomington, Indiana.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Instead. But yeah, we just played that because that dude
is a trip.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
Coming up next, we've got our guys, Zach sim of
Orangebloods dot Com as he prepares us for this weekend's
matchup in the Austin Regional coming up next right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
Welcome back to the.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Morning kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Mike Harballhard's World's Strongest Man, d Mark Henry,
and of course our guy Marcus. We are efforting Zach
sim of Orange Bloods right now.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
He should be joining us in just a moment.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Texas Baseball is getting ready to take on Houston Christian
this weekend today, excuse me, and it is a big
time matchup. And the news came out yesterday that the
starting pitcher will be Ethan Walker again. He got an
opportunity to start the game last week and did a
(22:54):
great job. So we tried to get coach who I
tried every way possible to give us the starting rotation
and everything else that was gonna go.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
He was not feeling us. He was not trying to
give that to us.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
So it was interesting when the news came out late
last night that they were gonna go with Ethan Walker
as the starting pitcher. And Texas is ready for any
and everything that can possibly happen, so let's go to
the phone lines right now and talk to our guys.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
Zach sim of Orangebloods dot com.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Zach, we were just talking about the fact we tried
to get coach los Nagle to announce his starting pitcher
yesterday on the show, but then he decided to wait
a little bit longer and he has decided to go
with Ethan Walker once again.
Speaker 16 (23:48):
Yeah, I think it's a I think it's a good idea.
You know, if you think about what he said all along.
He wants to set his rotation up to be the
best chance to win the regional, and that means just
to win three games, right or possibly even four yea.
And so by going within Ethan Walker, they can roll
him out against the four seed, the lowest seed, and
then you can bring out a guy like Harrison on Saturday,
(24:09):
which is his normal day, and then you got that
dangerous Ruger Riojas waiting in the wings in addition to that,
you know, and if it did go to a game four,
you still have the potentiality of using a Jason Flores
or Kaye Being or one of those guys. And so
I think it sets up really well. And if he
can mimic what he did against Tennessee. You know, you
(24:30):
might see ethan Walker to a guy like Grayson Sonyang,
even an Aiden Moffatt, guys like those Hudson Hamilton, Cody Howard,
and treat it more like an open right. If you
know that you need link, then you get some link
out of Walker. If he can only give you two,
that's fine as well.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
So right, so we're you're talking about the rotation and
it being set up, and I want to go to
the offensive side of the ball. Texas has kind of
struggled putting together some great at bats every time I'm out,
and situationally they've been able to leave a bunch of
runners on the bag. So to me, I talked about
(25:08):
this the other day. I believe that we need to
see the best of the best from Jalen Flores, who
situationally he's been good all season, but his average may
not say that. Say that, but these other types of
moments where guys like this rise to the occasion.
Speaker 16 (25:27):
Yeah, I completely agree. You know, I fully expect guys
like Rylan Galvan and Max Belue. Even now that he's
getting some more timing back, he's been in the cages constantly,
and you know, the guys like that.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
But I could also very well see.
Speaker 16 (25:40):
A guy like Jalen Flores have kind of that big
breakout game to help power his team, because you know
when Slowsingle talks about the leadership aspects, you know, if
Galvan's that a heartbeat and Jenna Williams is the energy,
Jalen Floors is a kind of special leader, right. He's
just he's not as talkative, but he's he's you know,
(26:00):
he's there and he expects things from you, and that
kind of stuff comes through in clutch moments like you said,
and so I can see him having a big breakout
regional to me, guys like Tommy Farmer or Casey Borba
are the other guys, or even will Gasprino. What can
the Horns get from those guys at the bottom of
the lineup if they can continue to come through even
(26:22):
in spurts, Being able to flip that lineup over is huge.
It's really really big because then you get back to
guys like Ethan and Max and give them more chances
to impact the game. So it'll be interesting to see,
especially with Jonah. You know, he's healthy, he's available. I
don't I don't think he'll start Game one, but he's
certainly going to see some playing time at some point
as regional.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
So yeah, and I love the fact that coach was
talking about him being available, especially in a regional like this,
because the energy that he brings every single time he's
on the field kind of and you know, people don't
talk about energy a lot when it comes to baseball,
but when he's on the field, people are paying attention.
Another guy that a lot of people are paying attention
(27:04):
to is the young man Ethan Mendoza. Mendoza is a
guy that came to the University of Texas dream school,
got an opportunity to transfer here, and now he is
the catalyst at the top of that lineup. And I
always said every since he's been in that leadoff spot,
it kind of changed the way Texas has played the game.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Zach, did we lose that.
Speaker 17 (27:36):
I'm here?
Speaker 6 (27:36):
There is my earphone is disconnected?
Speaker 3 (27:40):
Yeah, Mendoza.
Speaker 16 (27:41):
I mean, I don't think you can discount how important
he's been to the team. He's a guy that truly
loves the University of Texas. He has since he was
a little kid, and you know, just you know, I
wouldn't say he's a leader but the guy that just
produces at the top, he sets that example. He's like, hey,
let's get it going right. That feeds into the other freshman,
Adrian Rodriguez. You see him paired up a lot with
(28:04):
Kimball Schusler, and I think that's for good reason. You know,
you see the slow heartbeat of Kimball and you get
a little more electricity with Adrian. And so, yeah, even
Mendoza cannot be understated what he has provided in terms
of offensive production to this team, because you know, talking
about about Jason Jalen Flores. You know, he's hitting one
hundred points less than he did last season, right, Zach,
(28:24):
So having a guy opposite of him that's hitting three
point thirty is astounding, Zacha.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Is this the healthiest Texas has been or is this
just the most available that they've been?
Speaker 16 (28:37):
No, I think outside of you know, Adrian Rodriguez's hands
still kind of giving them issues here and there, and
then Jonah obviously, you know he's coming back into full form.
I think this is probably the healthiest they've been since Missouri.
You know, they've got a lot of rest. Slosnaegel talked
about like they're just ready to stop playing each other
like they want to see some outside competition.
Speaker 6 (28:58):
That's always a good thing.
Speaker 16 (28:59):
When you start annoy to seeing the guy across from you,
it's time to go play someone else, right right, Zach.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Before we let you go, I wanted to ask a lot.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
About the other groups.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
You know, you talk about this tournament and Texas and
Houston Christian, but you also have k State and UTSA,
a team that Texas has already played ended up losing
that Tuesday night game. It sets up to be one
heck of an Austin Regional.
Speaker 9 (29:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (29:28):
The thing I like about this Austin Regional is the
different types of teams that are coming. You know, KSE
State doesn't exactly have great pitching, like all their starters
are near six eras, but they have enough arms to
get it done.
Speaker 6 (29:44):
But they're hit.
Speaker 16 (29:44):
They've hit ninety two home runs on the season, which
was surprising to me. Now, Manhattan is a smaller ballpark,
but still you hit ninety two home runs, you're you're
putting a good pat to the ball. And then you
got UTSA. And the thing about UTSA that makes them
so dangerous is Dishwalk field plays perfectly for them.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
That field is set up.
Speaker 16 (30:03):
To really take advantage of their lack of power, but
their ability to hit to the gaps and so they
turn a single into a double or a double into
a triple, and and so they're just a they're very
dangerous offensively. And the guy that I love at the
lineup from UTSA is Mason Lytel. If you haven't watched
just a pure baseball player, he's certainly one of them.
I mean, he kind of reminds me of even Mendoza
(30:25):
Toomics to some extent. He's just he gets things going
all the time. And then Houston Christian, you know, they
you know, everyone writes them off right through the four
seed there. They they had to come through the South
in conference and win their conference to get in the tournament.
But they do play a solid brand of baseball. I
think they're a little overmanned and out gunned. But the
(30:46):
guy that's starting tonight again or today against Texas, Parker Edwards.
You know, he's a two way dude. He's hitting almost
three hundred for the season. He leads their team and wins,
and so it'll be fun to see him on the
mound because you know he's going to give his best.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
And they've won six straight to get here, so it
will be an interesting approach to the ballgame and I
can't wait to get there and check it out. I'll
check you out this afternoon, and of course make sure
you follow all the action Zach at the Dish, on
his social media and of course at Orangebloods dot com.
(31:19):
Thanks Zach, and I appreciate you adjusting your time man.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
Absolutely appreciate it, y'all, and see you later today, Mike.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
All right, brother, coming up next, we're going to continue
the conversations. That's right, cowboys are having OTA's and coach
Shatty is talking right here on the Morning Kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to
the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
(31:46):
hundred of the Zone. Shout out to Zach sim for
justin because normally you would hear him at eight o'clock,
but today at eight o'clock, we have Texas softball coach
Mike White joining us to talk about the Big Three
against Florida and the upcoming matchup against Oklahoma. And we
(32:08):
also have Ann Parker Coleman joining us at eight seventeen
to talk all things Texas Longhorns. But right now I
want to talk Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys are at OTA's.
They are trying to build what some would say a.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
New culture.
Speaker 18 (32:27):
Very easy and want to be the greatest culture of
professional sports. And that's saying a lot.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
I get that.
Speaker 18 (32:33):
But you know, it's no different than sitting up here
and talking about winning Super Bowls, you know, I mean
there's a standard. The standard is we want to be
the best. And will we be the best culture?
Speaker 3 (32:43):
I don't know.
Speaker 18 (32:44):
We're gonna try, and will we make mistakes along the way. Absolutely,
we'll make mistakes and then we'll fix things. And but
you know, like you know, you guys asked me a
couple of weeks ago about GP coming in here, like,
you know, how does he fit the culture? Well, the
culture's more than just one person, you know, And so
the big thing that goes into culture, too, I think,
is being authentic. You know, I will always be authentic.
(33:06):
I'm never going to stand up here and pretend to
be something I'm not. I think that that's a recipe
for disaster in this business.
Speaker 6 (33:13):
I've seen it. I've seen it fail. I think I
share with you.
Speaker 18 (33:16):
My dad said, Hey, if you ever get a shot
to be a head coach.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
Wanting he should never do is change, be yourself.
Speaker 18 (33:20):
And so the culture that we're building here is is
something that I truly believe in and that most of
these players that we have they believe in it, or
if they don't believe in it yet, hopefully them seeing
my conviction makes them buy in.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
Wow, why am I liking him?
Speaker 2 (33:38):
Well, I mean he I mean, I'm liking him, and
I'm because of what he's saying. But what he's doing
is what I want to see. I want to see
what is he doing. I want to just like him
because of coach talk, our coach speak.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
I want to see what he's doing, and I want
to see if he still has that same conviction, insame
energy after three losses in a row. Yeah, well, well, well,
we're hopeful that we don't have to deal with three
losses in a row where he would have to go
(34:14):
up there and have that conversation.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
I would hope not as well. You know you know
where I stand.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're still trying to figure out Cowboy
one foot out. But I gotta see change, and I've
already seen change. So I'm optimistic.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
And that's a that's a horrible place to be because
when you hope, that.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Means you have good feeling.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
And when the rug I'm talking about Lucy on the peanuts,
when the carpet comes pulling up from under you, or
they moved the ball out of the way and you
fall so hard it hurts even worse.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
It's gonna be. It's gonna be something to pay attention to.
And we'll see.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
But one of the guys that he mentioned was GP
George Pickens, and he he talked a lot about Pickings
and CD Lamb's chemistry.
Speaker 18 (35:04):
I think, number one, he's doing an incredible job picking
up the system. I talked about his intentionality last week.
Speaker 6 (35:10):
I believe just how hard he's working.
Speaker 18 (35:12):
But there was a play and it really wasn't anything
George did, but we're in the red zone and we're
in kind of a spread formation.
Speaker 6 (35:20):
We hit him for a touchdown. Joe did on at.
Speaker 18 (35:25):
A bender like a little skinny post down the low
red zone and CD was on the other side. And
when ced broke out and he looked back to see
where the ball went, and he saw George and the
end zone kind of dragged his toes on. CD was like, yes,
so I think his excitement for knowing that we've added
some pieces which will add to the competition. It was
(35:45):
cool to see a guy like CD be excited. And
those two guys relationship is awesome. I'm sure you guys
have probably done stories on it, but they're spending a
lot of time together. I think it's great for CD
to have someone like George, not that George is a
young player, but someone that GP it looks up to
n CD. They obviously have trained some together, but that
relationships really cool and I'm enjoying kind of just sitting
(36:07):
back and watching it develop and the two of them
getting together and spending time with Junior Adams and it's
it's been really cool and fun for me to watch
just how it all is beginning to fit together hard.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Y'all hope that the three, four and five receivers are
really close to them because they can learn a lot
from Pickings and Lamb, Like if they have those are
the guys that's gonna really make the difference when they
go four wide receivers or they go three wide receivers.
Who's gonna be that third guy? You know, Like those
(36:41):
guys are gonna have to catch up and I know
they love Mingo and but he's got to prove it
and somebody one of those three four and five guys.
I want to see what it is because they're only
gonna take six, right, and then they put the rest
on practice squad.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
So let's see what six comes out of that.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
But three four and five are the important, right, So
I want to see I want to hear more about
the We know what Ceedee Lamb can do.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
We're seeing what George Piggins can do, but what about
the three four to five.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
Well, I'm not really worried about three four and five
because of the fact that the ball is going to
one and two and those are the guys that mean
the most to me at this particular moment. So we'll
see what happens. The development of those other guys will
take place. I think the one thing that we're gonna
always we're gonna look back on is, yeah, they needed
a third guy, but they got a tight end and
(37:36):
Jake Ferguson, that's a beast. You just drafted blue who
can catch the ball out of the backfield and take
it to the house.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
You still have a deuce.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
Vond that I'm hopeful that they can find a way
with the new staff that tries to be a little
bit more creative. They get an opportunity to find a
way to use deuce vand to make him more effective
as well.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
So there is a lot of hope and optimism.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
And I appreciate the fact too that you said, I
don't want to see I don't want to know.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
If this is coach speaker. Now, let's see what happens.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
And so I believe that Schottenheimer, being who he is,
saying that I'm not changing because I got this head job,
is now creating an atmosphere that it seems like he's
sucking us all back in. Yeah, and you don't want
to be and I don't.
Speaker 15 (38:31):
Don't.
Speaker 1 (38:32):
Don't look at your phone because I know you're talking trash.
I just said, I pull me in, But you don't
want to be.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
You just you still sit here man tiptoeing through the tulups.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Coming up next, we're gonna have our guy, Mike White,
Texas softball coach, joining us to talk all things Texas
softball right now on the morning kickoff.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
On Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
Welcome back to a few Good Playball Friday edition of
the morning kickoff right here All Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. We talked a lot about the Knicks
pushing it to Game five with the one to eleven
ninety four victory over the Indiana Pacers. We also talked
to Zach sim of Orange Blood to talk Texas baseball.
(39:22):
We also covered the Cowboys, but right now is the
perfect time to talk about a three to nothing Texas
victory and what better way to break it all down
than talking to their head coach. Uh Texas softball coach
Mike White, coach, congratulations on the victory, moving into the
second round and you get to face a nemesis in Oklahoma.
(39:45):
But let's talk about what you saw yesterday from your
Texas softball team.
Speaker 7 (39:50):
Yeah, it was an exciting day obviously, you know, being
the first game of the day. I think it was
a good good for us to get out there and
get going. You know, obviously a lot of that team
and being bad sixteen of the twenty Plas bean back
to the Cult World Series.
Speaker 6 (40:02):
So we felt really comfortable in that environment.
Speaker 7 (40:05):
And you playing against against Florida, you know, with their
number one pitcher back Keegan Ross, Rock was gonna be
a tough match up, but Jolie Mitchell came through for
US hit a couple of home runs, and then followed
by Katie Stewart and then.
Speaker 6 (40:17):
There was some really great pitching boy taking.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Come on, yeah, we'll get into tigging in just a minute,
but let's talk about Jolie Mitchell and the fact of
the power display. In her post game she said, I
didn't hit a home run last year, so I had
a personal goal of hitting a home run. So she
didn't only hit one, she hit a second one. And
her power is undeniable. Not only does she hit one
(40:40):
the left field, she hit won the right field and
just displayed a great approach in that at bat in
those that bat excuse.
Speaker 6 (40:47):
Me, yeah, no, for sure.
Speaker 7 (40:49):
I mean, and the wind was blowing in too, But
the first one was a no doubt for sure, and
the second one, the centerfielder made a pretty good a
fat it, but it came just off her glove.
Speaker 6 (40:58):
But I mean, to hit it into the wind like
she did Church Path for sure without a doubt.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
Yeah, And I just love the fact that you had
mentioned it on our interview just the other day. You
talked about Florida coming back with Keegan Rothwright and being
their star and you didn't get a chance to face
her the first time. What did you guys notice about
her on the mound that they were able to take
that approach.
Speaker 7 (41:22):
Yeah, she threw a few more change ups and we
thought she was going to but you know, she's throwing
the low seventies, which is pretty good velocity for sure.
But we niced that she'd gone away from the rosewall
a little bit more and starting a little more recurve drop,
and so that was the pitch we were looking for
to attack.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
I love the fact of the way that you guys
went out there and handled your business.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
We talked about.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
Teagan a little bit because Teagan is somebody. She didn't
have a bunch of strikeouts yesterday, but she was effective
enough to let her defense take care of the plays
when they needed to talk about her approach yesterday and
only giving up two hits.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
Yeah, you know, she had some pretty hardh pitch count
the first couple.
Speaker 7 (42:02):
Of innings, but then was able to sittle in and
actually had one ending where she hadn't had five pitches
and was using her defense. And that was something we
told her about, was like, try to fear throw her
less pitches and really use her defense, and so I
think for the risk of the game from the food
and he on, she was able to do that and
really get some some good outs and of course Mia
Scott played an excellency base for US again.
Speaker 3 (42:23):
Coach Harj.
Speaker 2 (42:24):
Coach Harj and I had a big disagreement before you
came on, and that disagreement was the fact that.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
I hate to say this to you, I actually I
actually was.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
Hoping Oklahoma will win because I wanted revenge. I'm coaching.
It's something about me. I don't like to lose, and
when I lose to somebody, I want revenge. And Hart
was like, nah, man, I think we I want Oklahoma
to go through.
Speaker 3 (42:54):
The loser's bracket, is what I said. I thought that
they were.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
They always find a way, coach, and you know this
better than anybody. If you let them hang around, they
find a way to get back in to the ball game.
And being in Oklahoma, crowd, noise, everything that goes into it,
they find a way. So that was our disagreement. That
was the disagreement. But I wanted to know from you.
(43:18):
Do you feel the same way that I do.
Speaker 6 (43:22):
Well, it's gonna have to feel that way.
Speaker 19 (43:27):
It is what it is.
Speaker 6 (43:30):
You know, they do find a way. They're tough.
Speaker 7 (43:32):
I mean when the chips are down, they fall away.
But you know so we so you know we need
to get out there and bring it to them. And
you're in their environment. We know that nothing we can
do about it. You sit, go out there and play
some really tough softble and hopefully kick their butt, no.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
Doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
We're talking to Mike White, Texas softball coaches. They get
ready after the victory against Florida three to nothing. Now
they go and face the nemesis that they play every
single year multiple times in the Oklahoma Sooners and coach
obviously Teagan did a great job. Are you set in
(44:06):
your rotation you feel comfortable about that or you're just
gonna wait and see how everybody feels on Saturday before
you decide which direction you're going to go.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
Yeah, I'm looking to take my hap on that one
just right now. So coach, I don't know, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
Menhart is gonna have to have a conversation because he keeps,
he keeps trying to get you. You're coach slas Nigga
to tell him who's you gonna start.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
Stop stop it the coach.
Speaker 1 (44:36):
I've been around this game a very, very long time.
I know exactly how this all works. I know you're
not gonna say anything, but I wouldn't be doing my
job if I didn't ask you on the starting picture,
because that is what everybody talks about.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
You and I even had this conversation ourselves, Coach.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
We talked about the fact of when you have good pitching,
it gives you an opportunity every single week.
Speaker 7 (45:03):
No without a doubt. I mean, you've got to get
that good start. And I think we're going to be
home team on on Saturday, So what have the opportunity
to give out there on defense? Be on defense first,
and we need that good start to shit the tone
for the game, no doubt about it, Coach. I also
wanted to bring up Mia Scott.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
You mentioned her a little while ago, and you and
I talked about this the other day about her calm, cool,
collected demeanor. You don't know if she's oer for four
or have had four errors in the field, or made
four hits and had great plays defensively, talk about the
calming factor that she brings to this team.
Speaker 6 (45:40):
Oh yeah, we want the ball hit to Mia. Yeah,
it's like, hey, hit this one to me and get
a double player or something.
Speaker 20 (45:47):
You know.
Speaker 7 (45:47):
So yeah, she's steady as a rock out there and
continues to make great plays for us. And you know,
I like you said, the emotions, she doesn't get high,
too high or too low. She's pretty calm and I
think that that helps down the ubis are the ones
that are like maybe feeling a little bit anxious at times.
Speaker 1 (46:04):
So let me ask you this. Now you get the
day off. I know practice is involved, but what does
the Texas Longhorns have on the agenda today to kind
of relax a little bit?
Speaker 6 (46:15):
Well, you're right about practice.
Speaker 7 (46:17):
We're going to go go and hit at Alkahoma City
Christian So we're gonna hit the air for the morning,
and then they're gonna go shop just like a tent
set up for like you know your girls in their shopping.
Speaker 1 (46:27):
You got to I understand, I got a dollar. She's
been trying to get stuff all the time.
Speaker 7 (46:34):
So they're gonna do that, and then we're gonna have
dinner about seven o'clock and you pretty much children get
ready for tomorrow's game.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
All right, So the game will be at two o'clock.
You can watch it on ABC nationally televised game. And
I guess since we talked about it bringing up the
Oklahoma Sooners and what you've seen from them over not.
Speaker 3 (46:55):
Only just this year, but over the years.
Speaker 7 (46:59):
Yeah, I mean, obviously they're leaning a lot on Sam
Landry the picture, the transfer from Louisiana, and you know,
Coach Roacher is really good with developing pictures and she's
done a great job with her and she's and they
lean on here. So the secret crossis to get to
her and try to knock her out of the game.
But having said that, they through lifty against this last year,
that little this year that shut us out. So they're
(47:19):
not just a one person stop at all. But you know,
their defense, they played great defense. They're they're timely hitting.
But you know, every every player, every nobody bets a thousands.
So we've got to just go detective weaknesses. And you
know in school runs, we're gonna have the school runs
without doubt. We need to score at least five runs
be there that's in front of us, you know, because
they're they're just a formidable team.
Speaker 1 (47:39):
Yeah, and they always seem to find a way to
bring out some of those young players kind of like yourself.
You have a bunch of young players that always seem
the show up. They've grown up in this organization and
have gotten better and better. And Kate and Henry and
center Pield. She is amazing. I realized she was, but
(48:00):
I didn't realize she was that quick.
Speaker 7 (48:03):
Yeah, because a spreading in high school, you know, bring
a lot of track, and so if she's pretty quick,
I'm so I'm about to get her on.
Speaker 17 (48:10):
I had some options episode. It's fun to watch you
run the basis and Mia used to be that way too.
She slowed down a little bit, you know, with her
with a knee injury that she's been kind of like
going through their career, but you know, it's fun.
Speaker 1 (48:22):
I just I love the running game and now and
as sport. Yeah, that's one of my favorite parts. I've
always talked about. That's one thing that's missing in the
major league game, the college game, and of course the
softball game. You got to be able to run to
put pressure on defenses because what people don't understand, you
got to catch it, you got to throw it, and
you got to catch it again, and all those processes
(48:45):
are a little bit tougher as you go along as always, Coach,
we want to thank you for taking the time. Wish
you the best of luck as you take on Oklahoma
this Saturday, two pm. And you can watch the game
on ABC and you can hear it on I think
we're gonna play it on AM thirteen hundred to zone,
but we'll keep you posted on that.
Speaker 3 (49:04):
Thanks coach.
Speaker 7 (49:06):
I really appreciate the opportunity to talk to that fans
and hook them there.

And this team, you know, they've got pieces that can
handle all of these situations. And that's why it's always
cool to check it out and listen to what coach
has to say about it, because the approach has to
change every single at bat, every single pitch, and it's
all about the situations. Well, the situation doesn't get any
(49:48):
hotter than Texas Oklahoma up for the College World Series.
Speaker 3 (49:54):
So I'm excited about it.

As Texas Softball gets the victory thirty to nothing over
the Floor or the Gators in the Game one of
the College World Series, and now they will take on
Oklahoma after Oklahoma hits a walk off three run home
run to win the game over Tennessee and joining us
(56:16):
now as she does every Friday, is Ann Parker Coleman
of Kview. You can follow her at Ann Parker cole
Number one and Parker Texas Softball against the victory and
now they get.
Speaker 3 (56:32):
A chance to play against Oklahoma.
Speaker 1 (56:35):
Mark believes that he wants he wants revenge, and I'm like, NA,
we should have let them go through the losers bracket
to get to us and go from there.
Speaker 3 (56:45):
What are your thoughts.
Speaker 14 (56:47):
No, I agree, I would say we're in the loser's bracket.
I would much rather face Tennessee or you kidding.
Speaker 6 (56:54):
I mean even just the fact.
Speaker 14 (56:55):
That Oklahoma was losing, Tennessee was gonna win the game.
And it's just some teams. I feel like they just
everything goes their way. You got runners on the corner,
you hit a walk off home run like that. I mean,
it's it's uncanny their their ability to win. However, let's
counter that with some positive, some positivity for Texas softball,
(57:19):
which is i mean, complete game shut out by Teaking
Cavan yesterday, three home runs. Mike White probably said all
of this way better than I did, but they just
seem to be firing on all cylinders. So these can
make for a very fun matchup.
Speaker 1 (57:33):
Yeah, I'm excited about the matchup as always, But as
you said, Texas being able to go in there win
game one against a Florida team that was pretty much
a hot softball team, and for Texas to nullify anything
that they were trying to get going, it is a special,
special run for this Texas softball team right now.
Speaker 14 (57:55):
Yeah. Absolutely, I mean, just to get after Rothrock in
the way that they did. We talked about her so
much leading up to this matchup, and for Julie Mitchell
just to chase her off in the top of the
second with that home run, I think it just really
said set the president and Parker.
Speaker 2 (58:12):
I'm gonna tell you right now, I'm not going back
on what I said.
Speaker 3 (58:17):
I won't revenge. I won't I want to pick the payback.
Speaker 1 (58:21):
I want James Brown the payback being played in the stadium.
Speaker 3 (58:26):
When Oklahoma comes in there and faces.
Speaker 14 (58:28):
These longhorned women, well good, you know what.
Speaker 16 (58:32):
I like it.
Speaker 14 (58:32):
And if there's anybody that's gonna send them to a
loser's bracket, why let it be Tennessee. It might as
well be Texas.
Speaker 1 (58:42):
So let me ask you this because now we're getting
ready for Texas Baseball. They take the field today at
one pm against Houston Christian.
Speaker 3 (58:51):
There's also u UTSA taking on K State.
Speaker 1 (58:55):
This is one of those regionals that it sets up good,
but it also is going to challenge you, coach Slasnagel
decided to go back.
Speaker 3 (59:05):
With Ethan Walker.
Speaker 1 (59:07):
You and I did a segment UH this week talking
about how we're going to try to figure out how
the pitching staff was going to be set and then
we get this curveball. What were your thoughts when coach
decided to go with Ethan Walker.
Speaker 14 (59:23):
Yeah, I mean, I guess I was surprised. Yesterday when
we talked to him as the media, he said, you know,
when it comes to figure out how who's going to
be pitching for all this, it pretty much came match
up based. But I think starting Ethan Walker is I mean,
you said, right there a curveball. There's not much film
on this guy. He's pretty unknown, got a funky little
(59:45):
side arm, and it's a smart start too. He got
what was it, four or five innings? Yeah, yeah, so
he can eat up some innings. And then he saved
your stronger, more reliable known arms like Luke Harrison, Max Scrubbs,
Dylan Lynz. He saved those guys some inning, so hopefully
(01:00:08):
they can be used against a you know, a UKISA
or a Kansas State later on on Saturday and Sunday
and parking.
Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Did you see the wall go down? And did the
weather have any baron on them working to get it fixed.
Speaker 14 (01:00:27):
Yeah, it's always out there for practice yesterday morning and
I heard about the wall. I didn't seen anything about it.
I was like, people are just being dramatic. It's not
that big of a deal. They're gonna have the game here.
And then I got out there, I was like, oh
my gosh. I mean, the wall was if you're a pedestrian,
you can completely walk from the street into the fields
(01:00:48):
like it was completely gone. But I knew that by
about five or six o'clock the center field wall was
completely back up again. And then by the night they
had kind of a makeshift batter's eye. It wasn't very tall,
so I'm sure they're going to add to it. But
when I was talking to people, they said, yeah, you know,
(01:01:09):
once the storm cleared out, bad cruise working through the night.
And you know, that was their plan going forward with
don't work through the night or whatever, however long it
takes to get it done. But there was really no
question or conversation about whether the game would be played
at the dish.
Speaker 1 (01:01:28):
We're talking to Anne Parker Coleman of Cave. You make
sure you follow her at Ann Parker cole number one
for all of her social media posts and everything else
that leads into this. And you're right, you know, I
went out there yesterday, took a picture and you could
just walk through the park a lot and walk straight
(01:01:49):
onto the field. We drove by and my son was like,
why do they Why can we see them? I was like, yeah, dude,
the centerfield wall is missing. So now we're getting ethics
and to your point, now they're good to go. But
looking at this tournament as a whole, when you look
at Houston Christian, we understand who they are.
Speaker 3 (01:02:09):
They they're winner of six.
Speaker 1 (01:02:11):
You also look at what k State and UTSA, who's
already been to the University of Texas and won the matchup.
Speaker 3 (01:02:21):
This is a big time matchup for all of these
teams that are involved.
Speaker 15 (01:02:26):
Yeah, let's not.
Speaker 14 (01:02:27):
Forget I mean Kansas State went into Fayetville last year
and took the regional against Arkansas, Like, this is a
team that knows these big regional stages and to walk
out of there with the winning head to a super regional.
I think it's an interesting matchups too, because you talk
about two of these three Texas has already faced in
(01:02:49):
midweek matchups, and so somebody asks, yesterday, coach Sauce, you know, well,
when you've seen these teams before, is that helpful? Is
that kind of short tail your preparation said, it doesn't
to a degree. You might go back and look at
some of that film, but it's more just weighing the
film that you have more recently of these guys against
(01:03:11):
what you saw in the midweek and be like, okay,
that is that is how he always is at the players,
just making sure that all these things kind of kind
of check out. But it's it's interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Yeah, it definitely is.
Speaker 1 (01:03:25):
And I wanted to ask you this too, because you know,
you've been around the game quite a bit. You've even
mentioned that now you have become more of a baseball enthusiasm,
you're learning a lot more about this team and being
around Texas Baseball. What is it about Texas Baseball that
(01:03:45):
you found the most interesting as your time getting to
know this baseball team.
Speaker 6 (01:03:53):
Well, it's got to be the.
Speaker 14 (01:03:54):
Pitching staff, right. I Mean, nobody thought that they were
going to be as good as they are in and
I say that with some hesigency because they've run into
a lot of issues obviously with with Jeer at Spincer,
and they didn't have a ton of they didn't have
a a an abundance of riches in that bullpen. But
(01:04:16):
the way that they have been able to find link
through some.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
Of these guys.
Speaker 14 (01:04:21):
And you know, you look at a guy like Ethan Walker,
who was not even traveling to weigh games at one point,
now here he is starting in a regional I'm just
I've been so impressed with the way that they've handled
the arms and even just when I look inside the
(01:04:42):
dugout at games and some of like these like calming
breathing exercises that I see Max Sweener do with with
the pitch pictures. It's just that's that's definitely been been
my favorite part. And this is just year one.
Speaker 1 (01:04:57):
Yeah, I can't wait to see what happens as they
start to developed, get more guys in and being able
to understand it all.
Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
Before we let you go, I gotta ask you.
Speaker 1 (01:05:08):
You and I had a conversation on Wednesday that you
did not want to talk about Virginia's not in And
now it looks like Virginia's coach is going hard to
Mississippi State, O'Connor is making the move. How are you
feeling about your lums being able to uh now got
(01:05:28):
to go on a coaching search.
Speaker 14 (01:05:32):
Devastated, heartbroken, whatever sad word you can use, that is
how I feel it's so funny because Coach aus is
one of the first ones weeks ago that it brought
this up to me, and I heard from other people,
Oh he's dispelled it. He's just using it as you know,
leverage got the things that he wanted, but wasn't taking
(01:05:52):
it seriously. And then this report came out yesterday. Literally
I saw it, saw Kenna Rogers Street tweet as I
was walking into the dish and sure enough, first thing
when I see coach Flash, he looks at me.
Speaker 3 (01:06:05):
He's like, hey, I told you so.
Speaker 14 (01:06:09):
Yeah, And I was.
Speaker 3 (01:06:12):
Standing right next to you when that conversation was happening,
and you hate that.
Speaker 7 (01:06:16):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:06:16):
I was like, that is the rumor that is out
there right now. You're like, there's no.
Speaker 9 (01:06:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (01:06:23):
I didn't think that there was any validity to it.
I was like, I can't even believe Kurt Sass is
bringing this up to me, Like, see one thing about it,
but I didn't think it was a heartbroken.
Speaker 3 (01:06:37):
Yeah, it's tough, it will be okay.
Speaker 1 (01:06:40):
I'm sure Virginia has already been prepared for this and
now they will get ahead. Coach uh Texas Baseball today
one o'clock, I'll see you at the dish this afternoon.
Speaker 14 (01:06:52):
All right, see you guys there by, y'all.
Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
All right, all right, Coming up next, we're got a
new announcement that is going.
Speaker 3 (01:06:58):
To be happening.
Speaker 1 (01:07:00):
I'm the Big twelve and we've got the guy that
broke the story coming up next right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:07:11):
When you hear that beat, it can only be one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
WWE Hall of Famer and the world's Strongest Man, Deep
Mark Henry brings you his world's strongest take. But we're
gonna bootleg his take today and he's got a special
guest that's got some breaking news that needs to be
talked about. We're gonna be joined by senior writer from
The Athletic Chris Vanini. Chris, first off, thank you for
(01:07:36):
joining us on such a short notice and we're glad
to have you on the morning kickoff right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen.
Speaker 3 (01:07:44):
Hundred The Zone. Yeah, good to be here.
Speaker 22 (01:07:48):
Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (01:07:49):
Chris, you broke some big news and because you're a
wrestling fan and a wrestling media expert as well as
the work that you do in sports, which I really like,
because we both kind of cut from that same clause.
You got some big news to break about the WWE
(01:08:10):
and the Big Twelve.
Speaker 22 (01:08:13):
Yeah, I became bigger than I guess I thought it
was when I reported it. But you know, the Big
Twelve Conference and the WW obviously have a partnership that's
gone off for a couple of years. WW has sponsored
the Big Twelve Championship game. They've had some wrestlers at
the football game to give out a belt to the
MVP of the game. And so the plan is to
(01:08:35):
kind of expand that this fall, where WW is going
to be doing some SmackDown episodes in Big twelve markets
the night before some Big Twelve football games. So they're
still working on all the dates, but I know one
of them is Ireland actually Week zero, but it's a
(01:08:55):
Kansas State Iowa State game in Ireland in late August.
And then in September there's a game in Orlando. UCS
is hosting.
Speaker 14 (01:09:04):
On North Carolina with Bill Belichick and so.
Speaker 22 (01:09:06):
Smack Doonn'll be in Orlando the night before that, and
so there's still some other ways things can kind of
come together, but yeah, they're gonna try to kind of
make it a campus night football type of weekend deal.
Speaker 1 (01:09:20):
So I cover Friday night SmackDown before I do my
show on Serious XM Saturday morning. And when I saw
the fact that the Big Twelve was going to be.
Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
That the ww were going to be covering the Big
Twelve games Saturday morning, I thought that was that was
a great thing. In wanted to contact you and get
the scoop and is there other news that's going on
that we would that we would like that related to
pro wrestling and college football.
Speaker 22 (01:09:57):
Now, so there's going to be more games. I don't
know which ones they're still working on that. I think
they're going to announce it at some point, but I
think it's been a good move for the Big Twelve.
I mean, like WW is a obviously a gigantic audience
in college football is a sport. Has been kind of
trying to find ways to get new people into it.
(01:10:17):
And then on the flip side, obviously WWE has been
doing a lot with the NIL with the college athletes
to get them into NXT and into the developmental system
and stuff like that, and it's a good partnership. I mean,
two years ago, the Undertaker was at the Big Twelve
Championship game handing the MVP belt to when you were
(01:10:38):
as the Texas quarterback who the Undertaker like you, Mark
is big Texas fans. It was like a great visual there.
It's a great combination of these two things. And you
got two companies and two sports and sports entertainment that
can play off each other pretty well.
Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
Where did you get to the for pro wrestling?
Speaker 22 (01:10:58):
I grew I grew up watching it with my dad.
I remember the first image in my mind of pro wrestling.
I remember coming into the living room as a kid
and Shawn Michaels is crawling out of the ring in
a match against the Undertaker at one of the In
Your Houses in ninety seven, and Shawn Michaels tries to
fall out and the Undertaker grabs it back to his
(01:11:19):
trunks and his butt is just hanging out, and.
Speaker 3 (01:11:22):
I'm like, what the heck is this?
Speaker 22 (01:11:24):
I'm like, a look, So the first image I have
a pro wrestling in Shawn Michael's butt, And somehow that
just got me hooked into watching it from there on.
And obviously you can't you were right there around that time,
and so I've been kind of just watching ever since,
and I, you know, covering college football is my job
for the Athletic, but there's a lot of pro wrestling crossover,
(01:11:44):
and so I've any opportunity I've had to kind of
talk about both those things, the NIL to tryouts, all
that stuff. It works in both WW and people in
college football know that I'm the college football pro wrestling guy,
so sometimes you know, news will make its way to me.
Speaker 1 (01:12:01):
We're talking to Chris Vanini of the Athletic and you
can follow them at Chris Vanini on social media and speaking.
I want you to go back to the logistical part
of all of this, because the announcement is being made
and the story is being written. But you're right, how
are they going to decide what cities that are already
(01:12:22):
on the calendar for SmackDown as opposed to making sure
that they're ending up in these certain college towns? And
do they all obviously, do they all have to be
big twelve towns during that time? Well, it's not.
Speaker 22 (01:12:38):
It's not like all Fall is going to be the
Big twelve. They're just gonna have several dates. And I checked,
I said, is campus or market? The best person who
gave me the news? I said, is campus or market?
The better word? And they said stick with market because
we don't know for sure, like this Kansas City count
for Kansas instead of Lawrence. That's still TVD. I don't
(01:13:02):
know that yet. I don't know the other games yet
that are are that are I'm sorry, the other dates
that are set yet, but that they're they're finalizing that
should be out I think pretty soon. So it's it's
not gonna be like all fault like every week they're
doing a Big twelve thing, but there will be several
weeks in the fall where you know, promote the Big Twelve,
(01:13:25):
talk about.
Speaker 3 (01:13:25):
These these various things, because.
Speaker 22 (01:13:28):
It's going to set it up that way, and so
it's not like all false like every SmackDown episode is
going to be here's a Big twelve thing.
Speaker 14 (01:13:36):
But there will be a lot of them and the
other stall season where across.
Speaker 2 (01:13:39):
The well, Chris Man, I tell you what, I really
appreciate you coming on during the World's Strongest Take. My
take wasn't going to be as good as that one,
So I appreciate you.
Speaker 22 (01:13:51):
Yeah, no problem, guys, thanks for having me, all right,
and we'll.
Speaker 1 (01:13:54):
Definitely have you on again because there's a bunch of
stories that are out there in regards to the Big Twelve.
Obviously some stories that are out there and involving WWE
as well.
Speaker 3 (01:14:06):
So we got you locked in.
Speaker 1 (01:14:08):
Now we're gonna you're gonna get tired of hearing from
us trying to get these stories out.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
We'll appreciate you, man, absolutely. Guys say, there he is
Chris Vanini of.
Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
The Athletic doing his thing, and you know it's gonna
be interesting to see how they do that. And those
championship belts are are something that a lot of these players.
Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
They covet it.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
And I worked with Peak Events and Peak Events gives
out trophies or gives out wrestling belts for the champion
of their tournament. And actually Texas has one of those
in house because they won the tournament in Las Vegas
this year for baseball. So good stuff right there, and
coming up next, we'll close out the show and send
(01:14:53):
you to Dan Patrick. We got a lot to get
into Texas baseball, and we'll hear from coach Slasnagel finding
out about that wall that came down right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:15:07):
As all if you missed.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):
Any part of the show, and let me just tell
you you missed a great one. We had Zach Simoorrangebloods
dot Com talking Texas baseball. We had the coach of
Texas softball, Mike White, joining us to talk about Texas
softball as they get a three to nothing victory over
the Florida Gators and now they will face the Oklahoma
(01:15:32):
Sooners tomorrow Saturday at two pm. We also had Chris
Vanini of the Athletic join us just a little while
ago to talk Big twelve and Wwe put a big
smile on Mark Henry's face as they talked a little
bit of wrestling as well. Texas Baseball will take on
(01:15:56):
Houston Christian today at one pm. Craig and Roger Wallace
will start it all for you. At twelve forty five,
Ethan Walker will get the ball again as the starting
pitcher after he pitched in the SEC tournament, going four
and a third innings of great baseball. Texas probably should
(01:16:17):
have won that game, but the story has.
Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
Been the weather.
Speaker 1 (01:16:21):
Obviously, we woke up this morning there was a lot
of rain coming through the area, was coming down pretty hard.
But all signs point to Texas Baseball starting at one pm.
As I said, but coach Slasnagel was asked yesterday during
his press availability, where was he when he found out
that the centerfield wall was knocked down.
Speaker 6 (01:16:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
I was at dinner.
Speaker 23 (01:16:45):
Over in west of town, just quick, quick dinner, and
somebody sent me a picture. I mean, the storm had
blown through over there, but I don't think it was
nearly as bad on that side of town as it
was over here. So I was with a buddy at
dinner and said, hey, I probably need to get to
the ballpark. By the time I what was really cool
Gaitleen mentioned this, I think Luke maybe as well as
what was really cool is by the time I was here,
(01:17:06):
there was like eight nine people out there already trying
to figure out the assess what we were going to do,
and talk to them for a while. They asked me
my opinion on a few things, you know, what we
needed from a bare bones standpoint, and then we went
and took our team picture by the tower, which was awesome,
great experience.
Speaker 6 (01:17:24):
I love that.
Speaker 23 (01:17:25):
And then by the time I came back, they had
a lot of it torn down and sawing stuff and
they didn't need my seven and five days wrench.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
So coach coach was going to do what they needed
to do to make sure that he did everything.
Speaker 3 (01:17:46):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (01:17:47):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (01:17:48):
That's good stuff. I mean, you know, shout out.
Speaker 1 (01:17:51):
To all those workers that understood the job that was
needed to be done. They went, they got it done,
got everything that they needed up until that point to
be able to be playable. And now Texas will take
on Houston Christian today. Are you are you handy?
Speaker 3 (01:18:10):
I mean, I can do what I need to do.
I don't know. Answer my question. No, I'll say no,
I'll say noting. What I will say is no. Listen, man,
I'm the worst. I'm the absolutely worse.
Speaker 14 (01:18:21):
I can't.
Speaker 2 (01:18:22):
I can't fix nothing hard. I'm serious. I barely just
put gas in the car.
Speaker 1 (01:18:28):
My motto is there's people that went and got these jobs,
and we need the support we need to support their jobs.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
Yeah, I don't. I don't climb ladders. My wife changes
all the light bulbs. When you know, if we don't
have somebody come do it. I mean, do you have
a sturdy enough ladder for you? Well, we do harsh, Actually,
we do hard. We have we have a ladder that
will hold three hundred pounds. Of course, I was at
the time we got that ladder, I was probably about
(01:18:57):
closing four hundreds, so I never went.
Speaker 3 (01:19:00):
I just walk up and down that ladder just because
I can't. Hey man, I've been doing if I want to.
Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
But I'm you know, I have told you I have issues, right,
I have issues with needles, I have issues with height.
Speaker 3 (01:19:10):
You got issues, You got issues. I have issues. Yeah,
but you own those issues, and that's that's right. That's right.
And if if I got to.
Speaker 2 (01:19:20):
Call Joe the handy man to come in, get on
that ladder, Joe, I'm on, get.
Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
On the way. I'm on the way. So yeah, I'm
I'm I'm with you on that.
Speaker 1 (01:19:32):
I mean, you start looking at these this situation, and
this is a very unique situation for Texas Baseball, not
the fact that they're hosting an Austin regional, but for
a storm to come in and be able to knock
over a centerfield wall, a centerfield. When I first saw
(01:19:53):
the videos, I was like, is that the yetty yark,
you know, because there's some space in there, there's some
room in there, and I'm like, no, that's the wall wall.
Speaker 3 (01:20:03):
And so I've been around this field a.
Speaker 1 (01:20:05):
Long never seen anything like that, Nothing like that and
for them to get that ready and playable. Obviously, I've
seen people post a lot of time, Uh, post them
some pictures talking about well it seems a little shorter
than normal. Yes, yeah, they're putting it together to be
able to play this weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:20:26):
Did you expect them to have the highest wall in baseball?
Speaker 7 (01:20:30):
So so?
Speaker 1 (01:20:31):
Oh, so it looks the same. It's gonna be aesthetically
pleasing regardless.
Speaker 3 (01:20:35):
I guarantee all those people over there on Motpacker like.
Speaker 2 (01:20:38):
Hey, send those crews over here exactly because we got
some some big problems with fallen trees over there on
Anderson and and and far west Man.
Speaker 3 (01:20:50):
It hit them bad over there.
Speaker 1 (01:20:52):
Yeah, they gotta have better HOA and communication amongst each other.
Speaker 2 (01:20:56):
Oh, they need to call coach Slasnaga and say, hey,
can you send those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:21:00):
No, they need to ask him if he can use
his five eighth britch to come over there. Put it up, brig.
We got we gotta put some some things back up.
But unbelievable work. Happy, happy, Happy that they get a
chance to be able to play, uh this game this weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:21:20):
There's been so much that goes into getting to.
Speaker 1 (01:21:24):
The postseason, and now all of these teams like a
a Texas Longhorn UTSA out of San Antonio, you got
Houston Christian and of course K State. There's gonna be
some team, some players playing against former teams. K State
has d Kennedy, who's a former Longhorn Ruger Riojas, that's right,
(01:21:46):
Ann Parker Coleman, I said his name correctly. Uh, he
will get a chance possibly to play against ug uts A.
There's just so much that goes into this and I'm
excited about it. And again, if you miss any part
of any of this, get over to our podcast page,
make sure you like, follow, subscribe to us on YouTube

more about baseball and seeing if they've advanced, and hopefully
hosting another sup per reach.
Speaker 3 (01:22:40):
I'm on the bandwagon now, still got room.
Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
