This is a Texas Tuesday edition of The Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It is

kicking off the season at the Horseshoe. Texas has a
new partnership and so does AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
(01:03):

their thoughts. Joe Cook of Inside Texas joins us at
seven point thirty four. The Voice of the Texans, Mark
Vandermere joins us at eight seventeen, and we will have

texas followed by your message to eight one five three zero.
Standard data and message rates may apply. Also if you
want to leave us a voicemail, because we're gonna give
(01:58):
you some opportunities to do some things during the season,
so you might as well get over there. Download the
iHeartRadio app that's always free, and program us as number
one on your preset number two for the podcast page.
But most importantly, be ready to use that microphone to
leave us a voice message, because we got a lot
(02:20):
of stuff that's going to be going on once the
football season kicks off this weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Mark, let's get right into it.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Because yesterday there was some news that came out of
the forty Acres and there was a partnership that was
formed by the University of Texas. And the interesting part
about this is we did not know that.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Well.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
We kind of got the Texas Partnership hint over the
weekend that there may be something new that will be
coming up. But the news came out yesterday right while
we were ending the show that the Texas Longhorns University
of Texas Longhorn or have had an agreement.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
With a new I guess you would say supplement. That's
what we would go with.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
It's called human with two Ends and we've seen it
across the country known as super Beats. Super Beats is
part of this, but now they have now decided that
they are going to have a partnership with the University
of Texas which is developed right here and it helps
(03:33):
with cardiovascular breathing endurance. And Texas has done this. They're
the forefront of it. They've been the flow and it
helps everything like that. What are your thoughts on that, Mark?
Speaker 2 (03:50):
I think it's good Man like the blood flow aspect
of it too. When you're trying to recover and you
need more oxygen to your blood. So like, if that's
that's a good thing as long as it meets all
of the standards of where you're not cheating.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Well, it definitely is not a cheating a super beats.
It's from ad from beats. It was developed here. I
saw that you were talking to doctor Harden the other
day when we were taking our pictures.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
He agreed. I mean he was right behind it as well.
He was part of it.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Mister Coker and mss Coker, who I've known since nine
didn't realize that they were the ones that.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Were behind that.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
I used to coach their son, Jake, and him and
my son Michael played basketball together during the summer league,
and I was like, wait a minute, y'all, do I.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
May have to change my brand? I take beats every day.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah, but I want you to hear about the development
of the legacy of this and how it all came about.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
The science came out of the nitrocoxide Discovery program at
the University of Texas.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
But didn't have a product.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
John's mission all along, I think was impacting the way
human beings think about their health.
Speaker 6 (05:07):
As I was working on this research, I was approached
by coach Eddie Reese.
Speaker 7 (05:13):
Eddy Rees, if you've ever been around the competition, boy,
you've heard the name.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
And Eddie took those ideas and used them and saw
success with it. So we've taken a lot of this
information that we developed for the athlete and now we
apply it to the general population. And by ut and
human coming together, this has really cemented that interaction.
Speaker 8 (05:35):
What human's been able to do in the lab and
now taking this into our locker room. The idea that
it helps our players with their focus with the recovery
and our players have access to it on a daily
basis is pretty incredible.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
I mean, this is the program that got us launched
because of doctor Ivy and all we did for the
nutrition program.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
That's what this is about. They're our story. What starts
here changes the world. That's a shoetle.
Speaker 9 (05:59):
You want to hang you high.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Love it, love it. That's what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
And again the fact that this is something that has
been clinically proven, research brought all the way back and
now they have a sponsorship. The part of the sponsorship
and excuse me partnership. Part of the partnership is that
they have their name on every sporting field, like every
(06:24):
event there will be this on the field and coach
coach curs dell Conti was asked about it and he said,
you know, people were like, well, you want to put
it on the jerseys?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
You want to do He's like, uh no, the jerseys
are sacred.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Okay, you don't be touching those iconic jerseys. But you
can put it on the field and you can see
it in different areas. But most importantly, this is something
that the players have been using. And doctor Harden talked
about the fact that the players have been drinking the
Beat juice and they would come in and hold their
(07:02):
nose and when they got ready to take it because
they hated it so much.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
But then now they have it in.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
A spot where you can chewable, you can shake it.
It's so many different ways that you can get it
that they come back for it, even though they didn't
like it at first. So they've been coming to get
it and they know that it helps them with their endurance.
It helps them and it's like you said, NCAA approved,
it's gone through the proper, priper channels, and you.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Know that athletes want an advantage, oh for sure, and
anything that's legal that is proven that it's not going
to hurt you and in fact that it's going to
add to your endurance and your focus and your recovery.
Speaker 9 (07:50):
Sign me up.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah, well I'm signed up. I got you some, I
have some. I started taking it yesterday after I received it,
so we'll see what happens in a few days. Chris
Delcanti said he's been taking it for a couple months
and he's never felt better.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
So all these things have a purpose.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
It's not just you know, it's just not fluff that's
out there in those particular moments. So congratulations to the
partnership or the University of Texas and Human also known
as Superbats. I want to transition because yesterday there was
news that came out. There was a press release that
was given to us. We knew about it, but now
(08:31):
it has become official.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Third and Longhorn.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Is now part of the iHeartRadio family for those that
don't know, and where if you've got to be under
a rock, Third and Longhorn is the Longhorn Football Show basically,
(08:55):
but it's Lifetime Longhorned. Derek Johnson, Alex Okerfer, Fozzie Whitaker,
Rod Babers, Jeremy Hills, and the guy that will be
joining us today who was co founder of the clark
Field Collective and help start the Texas One Fund, Nick Shuley,
will be joining us in studio. And what this means
(09:16):
about moving forward. You can catch their episodes of Third
and Longhorn.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
They will be taping it.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
But more importantly, you will be able to hear postgame
reaction immediately after the football game where we will have
their crew with Third and Longhorn doing the postgame recap
of the Texas Longhorn games.
Speaker 9 (09:42):
So we got us kicking it off.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Exactly, so we kick it off on college game Day,
on Texas Longhorn Game Day. It will kick off this
weekend at a m. You can listen to it right
here on your home for Texas Football Sports Video AM
thirteen hundred the Zone with the voice Craig Way doing
his thing as always, and then after the game you'll
(10:08):
be able to hear from Third and Longhorned crew as
they break down the game. These guys all played it,
they understand it, they've been on that field, they know
what it's all about. So it'll be good to hear
immediate reaction and we'll talk to Nick Shuley. See if
there's gonna be the way people can call in. We're
gonna see if you can hit him up online. We'll
(10:30):
find out everything today when we get a chance to
talk to Nick Sholey. But awesome stuff for the University
of Texas. Awesome stuff for AM thirteen hundred the Zone,
and excellent stuff for third and Longhorn being part of
the iHeartRadio family.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
And of course AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 9 (10:50):
Congratulations guys, rub them to the family.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Mark, why you look like you're doing a cameo appearance
for somebody?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Like you finished up them.
Speaker 9 (10:59):
He's an don't hit on me because I'm real.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Like he relaxed and lounged down.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
We might we might need to see.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
That's what I was thinking.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
I was like, we gotta find a way to figure.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Out comfortable tea crumpets. He's about to do an ad.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Hey, I'm Mark, I do have a high tea coming
someones and some tea.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
As soon as you sat there and I was like,
is he about to do a commercial for a soul
Brooke soul glow.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
O?
Speaker 3 (11:36):
My brother, you got to get your old coming up next.
We're gonna continue.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
We're gonna let you hear from coach sarkis And as
we get ready for Texas and Ohio State four days away.
We are Roy Williams, swe.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Line in Swing, Kenny maccarro.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
The list goes on and on days away from Texas
and Ohio State. But coming up next you'll hear from
coach Sarkisian as he gets you ready for this big
matchup right here on a Texas Tuesday edition of The
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone.
Coming up in the next segment, we'll talk to our guy,
(12:18):
Joe Cook of Inside Texas and on three as he
breaks down what he heard yesterday from the press conference.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Don't forget.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
At eight o'clock we'll be talking to Nick Shuley of
Third and Longhorn talk about our new partnership with them.
But also at eight seventeen, we'll have Mark VanderMeer, the
voice of the Houston Texans, as he gets us ready
for the Texans as they get ready to kick off
the season. But of course his game week four days away. Brother,
(12:48):
this is the time that we have been waiting for.
This is all that we have been looking forward to,
and we're going to continue.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
To roll with it. Well, let's get into the conversation.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Coach Sark yesterday met with the media for the first
time of the season, and as always, when we get
a chance to top two, Coach Stark, it is a
lot of exciting things that are going on right now.
He is talking about this matchup. He's focused, he's locked in,
and he's ready to go, as are his players. So
here's his opening statement.
Speaker 8 (13:20):
You know, pretty epic matchup when you think about you know,
one verse two in at least one of the two
major polls for the first game of the season, is
great for college football in my opinion, you know, as
much as you know, I'm going to talk about the
rankings don't matter, which I believe that, but I do
think for college football, the fanfare, the excitement around this game,
(13:42):
I think is great for our sport. And the fact
that we have three top ten matchups this weekend I
think is great for college football in general. But beyond
the rankings, these are two really good teams. A ton
of respect for Ohio State, ton of respect for Ryan
Day and the job he's done obviously defending national champs.
I think I think coach Day is like seventy to
(14:03):
ten since he's taken over at Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
And you think about the quality of.
Speaker 8 (14:07):
Players in this game, you know, and if you look
at last year's game, twenty six players got drafted off
of the two teams in the NFL you include free agents,
thirty two players that were playing in that game a
year ago are.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Now in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (14:21):
And the fact that both teams are coming back is
one and two in the country, I think speaks volumes
to the quality of programs that both of us have,
quite frankly, and so you know, we've got nine guys
that started in that game a year ago. We had
thirty players back that played in that game a year ago,
so we do have some experience from that environment.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
But it should be a heck of a day.
Speaker 8 (14:43):
The fact that you know this is going to be
Lee Corso, Swansong and ESPN College Game Day is going
to be there. Obviously, Fox with their big new kickoff
covering the game is going to be there. I think
sets for a great environment and a great stage for
this game. You know, naturally, it's a tall task. We've
we've uh talked about this at length before the season,
(15:03):
but we've got a tough road slate this year and
this is the first one of a few to come,
and so uh it serves us good to have to
go on the road early, find out about ourselves, find
out where we're at, where we're at as a program,
where we can approve, uh, and where we can continue
to get better because we're gonna travel more than any
other SEC team UH this year in our conference, and
(15:24):
so uh this is a great opportunity for us to
go do that. Naturally, we believe in our process on
the road. We've won eleven in a row on the
road now and and they haven't been easy. They're all
been very difficult. Going on the road is tough. But
this is the head of a matchup for a great
environment against a really good team who's really well coached,
who's had a ton of success. And yeah, I think
(15:45):
a little bit too about some of the epic games
that that Texas and Ohio State have been part of.
Obviously last year's national semi final game, this is the
twenty year anniversary of the five season and and v
Y and and going there and getting to win at
the Shoe. So the two programs are not you know,
they're they're they're very kind of aware of one another.
(16:07):
There's been great games and that you know, the goal
is I think for both teams and for both fan
bases that this game can can live up to some
of those expectations of the games in the past.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
That's the expectation mark the the the anticipation of what
they do when they go on the road and how
they handle their business on the road is something that
coach Sark has taken a lot of pride in. They
they understand what the job is at hand. The players
definitely understand that. But my question to you is in
(16:40):
these particular moments, but before I get your question, I mean,
before I get your answer, did you see that Fox
and YouTube are having an issue right now, so people
with YouTube may not be able to get this game.
They have until Friday, I believe it is five o'clock
Eastern time to get this settled or the folks on
(17:02):
YouTube may not be able to watch the game. And
why is it that it's always at the time where
it's the biggest game of the year. It's always when
football season is about to start for both the NFL
and the college game.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Well, I'm gonna tell you right now what It is hard,
is they They want to push the people into a corner.
Speaker 9 (17:26):
They couldn't come up to an agreement.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
It's kind of like Michael Parsons and Trey Hendricks contracts.
Speaker 9 (17:32):
They're just gonna keep pushing it, keep pushing it. They'll
they'll fold, they'll give in, and the people are not
giving in.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Like, you gotta do a better job of negotiating and
trying to get these things done before it gets down
to the fine hairs, right right, I mean it is
because we're affected. The fans are affected. The people watching
the programs that paid the money to have the system
(18:00):
to watch the games. We're the ones that's getting affected.
The people in the front offices, they don't they don't care.
They're gonna get to watch it probably I'm close and personal.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Well it's just YouTube. I mean, you can watch it
if you got other other avenues to it. You can
get the you can get the antennas, to go old
school on it and get the antennas. But you know,
it's just one of those things. But going back to
preparing for the game and getting yourself in the right mindset.
Coach Stark, he don't mind what's going on. He don't
(18:32):
mind one versus three. He ready, He's ready to go
into the field of battle.
Speaker 8 (18:40):
The business been limited, Yeah, he's been limited, which is
you know, I think we all would want him to
be able to have been going the whole time of
us right now. He's a very good football player, a
guy who had an immense amount of production in only
nine games at Stanford a year ago, and I think
that for him, the growth is going to be as
season continues to go. Like I always think back to
(19:02):
Matt Golden last year, where going into the season, I
don't think I maybe even feel that a question about
him before the first couple of games, but by the
end of the year he was the topic of discussion.
And so his evolution as the season goes on, I
think is going to be really important as he gets
more and more comfortable with us.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
And that's coach talking about your guy, Emmitt Moseley, somebody
that you expect some big things on the blocking end
of things as opposed to always on the catching end.
So he is working his way back in and he
expects him to be ready to go.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Trevor Goosby is ready to go. He's going to be
ready to play on Saturday as well.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
So the offensive line seems to be back intact, and
of course getting Emmitt Moseley back is going to be
huge for Texas.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Marge, I wouldn't let everybody see what was in my
two box either. I'm just going to go on record
right now as saying that I believe in gamesmanship and
if I have a guy that, okay, I've seen enough,
I know that in this package, in this package, he's
going to.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Be really good. I'm not showing that you you no more. Yeah,
but my question for you is, I mean you can't.
You can't. This is game number one. You can't hold anything.
This is a big time matchup. Your job is to
win it.
Speaker 9 (20:20):
Now.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
I understand if he's.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Been dealing with that injury and you didn't want to
push it, but you still want to get a victory.
I know we keep saying it's not gonna have bearing
on the end of the season, but it does, and
it does on what your ultimate goal is, and that
is to let everybody know that you are real here.
But what is the keys for coach Sark in the
team's road success?
Speaker 8 (20:46):
You know, I think I think we trust our process.
You know, we've got a real process that we believe in,
in our starting this morning and what our practice plans
look like, and the crowd noise that we work with,
and to Friday's routine, to game day's routine, and to
really toning out what's going on outside of us and
(21:07):
focus on what's going on between the white lines. And
to your point, we've been in some tough some tough venues.
You know, playing at Kyle Field last year was a
tough venue, Playing at Michigan last season, defending national champs,
going to Alabama the year before that.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
So we've been in some tough venues.
Speaker 8 (21:22):
I think doing it with confidence, knowing that adversity will
strike and then having a next play mentality having the
mental toughness to persevere to get on the other side
of some of that adversity I think is really important
as well. But mostly it's staying connected. It's staying connected
on that sidelines, being enamored with what we need to
do and not get so caught up in what's going
on around us.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
I love the fact that he said being enamored with
what we do.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
That means you gotta love it, you gotta understand that
we are built like this. But Finally, he was asked,
why do you like these road environments?
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Oh, well, we'll get that to you in just a second.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
But you know, you start to understand that when you
look at coach and how he prepares himself and what
goes into it, there's a lot and so here's the
road environment.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
I love him.
Speaker 8 (22:18):
I've never been to the Shoe, you know, I had
never been to Michigan.
Speaker 9 (22:21):
Last year.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
I had never been.
Speaker 8 (22:23):
I've been to Kyle Field one time a year before that,
and obviously I'd spent time in Tuscaloosa.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
But I love it.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
I think it's cool for college football. I kind of
enjoyed people telling me how terrible I am and stuff.
You know, it kind of fuels my fire a little bit.
So No, but it should be a great environment. I'm
looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Coach likes it. Doc he likes it.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Hey, if you don't like to be the heel, then
you don't really love entertainment, because there is no entertainment
without good and evil, without bad versus good. Like, somebody's
got to assume the role. If you put the role
on me, then I'm a player to the hill.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Right, And you love and you made your most money
as a heel.
Speaker 9 (23:08):
I did, yep, And that's.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Why coach Sark is making his most money as a
heel when he goes on the road.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
He loves it when we come back.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Well if Joe Cook of Inside Texas getting his thoughts
on the preparation of the week right here on the
morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It is game week.
It is Tuesday, and that can only mean one thing.
Joe Cook of Inside Texas joins us. You can follow
(23:40):
them at Joseph Cook eighty nine on social media. Joe,
it is that time. It is exciting time. But now
all the talking is over. It is game week. How
excited are you? And what was your biggest takeaway from
the press conference yesterday?
Speaker 3 (23:58):
Yeah, this is always a lot of fun.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
We get through it off season, and you know, when
you're in this industry and you know when you're in radio,
I'm sure it's the same. It's like, all right, what
do we talk about when we talk about you know,
we're talking about the right guard in March, and like,
I love that, but it's also nice to talk about
the game that's four days away, and it's so much
fun this time of year.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
And my biggest takeaway from yesterday, man, it just kind
of seems like Starkesian.
Speaker 7 (24:27):
You know, I'm sure his team has problems, and I'm
sure there's some deficiencies that he's identified and that the
rest of the outside world has identified. But I think
you can tell that that Sark is someone who actually
finds a lot of satisfaction.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
From looking at this particular team.
Speaker 7 (24:44):
And I think he got a lot of satisfaction from
the twenty twenty four team and the twenty twenty three team,
and you know, maybe the twenty twenty two and twenty
twenty one teams in different ways.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
But you know, winning's fun.
Speaker 7 (24:55):
That's something that he acknowledges, and I think he's he's
very cognizant of like the hard work that's necessary to
be this good and it's just really enjoying watching a
team that he believes is this good work. So, you know,
I think there's always gonna be a little bit of
a hesitation, And I did kind of was struck by
(25:15):
the honesty if like, we don't know the team's identity yet,
whether it's a you know, run first team or you know,
throw the ball around team or you know, if it's
offensive or defensive first team.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
I think that's you know, you would.
Speaker 7 (25:29):
Like to have an answer, but it's not like this,
you know, awful coincidence or awful you know, happening that
he didn't make, you know, an assertion of what the
the identity was. But other than that, you know, I'm
I'm excited for what's going on in Columbus and excited
for the season.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Joe, you think that even with the deficiencies that they
probably know about, it'll take the It'll take it'll take
the opposite team three quarters to figure that out, and
then by then it'll.
Speaker 9 (26:04):
Be too late.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (26:07):
Yeah, I mean you can kind of look at the
Michigan the Michigan game last year. You know their Texas
was aside from a fifty five yard little pitch play
to Ryan Wingo, like, they weren't running the ball all
that well against Michigan, but you know, they were still
able to execute on offense. They held possession even without
a lot of rush success last year. And I'm sure
(26:29):
Ohio State's going to try and figure out how Texas
might do that again. But you know, maybe this is
a team that has a certain play in one certain
play that just works and the other ones don't. Well,
Ohio State doesn't know what that play is quite yet. Yeah,
it'll take a little bit. So that's kind of one
of the fun things about the first game of the
year is it's it just shows up and you know,
(26:51):
here's here's your stake, sir, and I don't and you've
got to figure out how well it's cooked and what
what ell else needs to be done with it. But
it's it's you know, sarcas to excuse me, Sark has
to do that too, PK has to do that too.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
And just part of the excitement of this.
Speaker 9 (27:09):
Game, well I'm talking language.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
Of course, it has something to do with food.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Uh here, we're getting ready for this matchup. And one
of the things too, that I thought was was unison
across the board is the confidence that the players have
going into the game. Obviously, they're like us, they've been
waiting for this moment, arch getting his first opportunity to
be the leader of this football team and be the
(27:37):
man in the arena. And of course you got the
SoundBite of the week from one guy named Colin Simmons.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
For those that don't know, we'll play that for you
a little bit, but it is.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
It is good to see the confidence that these guys
have and the chip on their shoulder.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 7 (27:56):
And I think there's also a comfort, you know, arch
if you listen to him talk like, he gives good answers,
but he's not going in depth on anything, and that's fine.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
But he was asked a little bit about like what what.
Speaker 7 (28:09):
His brother is gonna do, and he's like, Oh, my
brother's gonna go up.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
There and tear up Columbus.
Speaker 7 (28:14):
And I don't think you say stuff like that if
you're not like really comfortable right now.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
You're not you know, taking the time to make jokes.
Speaker 7 (28:22):
About what your brother may be doing and uh, you know,
taking the time to you know.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Or if you go to the other other side of
the ball.
Speaker 7 (28:30):
Like Colin Simmons isn't who is probably one of the
most supremely confident people on that entire team. Uh, he's
not making any of these boasts without thinking that he
is going to be able to get to Julian saying.
So I think that the comfort and that confidence really
is something that this team has a they believe in themselves.
(28:50):
And you know, when when you're a team like this
at this point in college football, like you know, you're
you're surprised to lose, You're you're shocked to lose.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
And you know that.
Speaker 7 (29:00):
Wasn't always the case with some of these Texas teams,
especially even some Sarkesian teams. Not to say they expected
to lose, but I think they went into some of
these games thinking, Okay, this is a potential outcome. Like, no,
this program is surprised by losses, and they have to
kind of still move to an NFL style because one loss,
two loss, and heck, maybe even three losses doesn't knock
(29:23):
you out of the college football playoff, but they still
need to have that WHOA, what happened? I don't want
to make sure this happens again, you know, if it
happens at all, and you know, there's a small possibility
Texas just doesn't lose this year, And wouldn't that be
something to track?
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Oh that's what a lot of people are hoping the
track right there, Joe, And I like the way that sounds.
I'm not gonna I'm not gonna bug you for a
prediction as of yet. Make sure y'all get over to
Inside Texas to check out his prediction as his crew
gets together and they come up with it.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Week by week.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
But I will ask you your expectations for the season
as far as wins and losses.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
Yeah, I've been trying to bounce around between basically three
games that I think could trip up Texas, and one
of them is this one.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
One of them is the Florida game, and one of
them's the Georgia game.
Speaker 7 (30:10):
And you know, I'm trying to figure out, you know,
if you're Texas, what do you prefer?
Speaker 9 (30:16):
Do you prefer to Maybe.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
You I mean, you prefer not to lose any of them,
but you know, do you want to slip up here
and then you know, maybe be able to either go
to the Swamp or go to Athens and and get
one of those two and split those two. And I
think this is a team that's probably a ten and
two team. I think this is a team that can
compete for the SEC championship. And we saw a two
(30:39):
loss team get in the SEC title last year or
two conference lost team. But it's it's one of those
things where you know Florida is gonna be tough on
the road, and as long as Lagway is healthy and
George is always difficult between the hedges.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
I do see ten and two.
Speaker 7 (30:57):
I don't know if that means that they're going to
get in to the SEC Championship game, but I do
think that still has them as one of the better
teams in the country.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Because I'm not sure who's gonna go.
Speaker 7 (31:08):
Undefeated this year, or you know, somebody is, but we
don't know who that is, or no clear cut team
that that's gonna be like there has been in some
years past. And I think they're gonna be, you know,
working for a college football playoff bid and probably getting
another home game, and you know, the team that won
it all last year got.
Speaker 9 (31:27):
A home game.
Speaker 7 (31:28):
So I don't think that's anything that will prevent them
from making a run to the title game. And that's
that's kind of where I see them, at least playing
in that title game.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
So tenantz is.
Speaker 7 (31:38):
Where I'm sitting at. I know that's kind of a
I know that'll that puts me on the over on
a lot of wind. Total there you go, all you go,
I'll ride that direction.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
That was my point, get to the get to the over, baby,
That's what I was hoping.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
For because that's what I took when I went out
to Vegas. But who's talking about that? As always, get
over to.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Follow my man Joseph Cook eighty nine on social media
and catch all.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Of his work. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
When we come back, we'll close out the top of
the out, I mean close out the hour. NFL had
some signings and yeah, Mark Trey Hendrickson got paid haha.
Right here on the morning kick off on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Great stuff for our guy
Joe Cook of Inside Texas. Make sure you follow that
Joseph Cook eighty nine coming up in the next segment.
(32:28):
Third and Longhorn co founder my guy Nick Sholey. Nick
Shuley will be joining us to talk all things Third
and Longhorn and the new partnership that we have here
at AM thirteen hundred The Zone. We have Mark VanderMeer
of the Voice of the Houston Texans joining us as
cuts are being made in the NFL and lives are
(32:51):
being changed, and one of those guys whose lives has
changed is Scary Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders. He
signs a three year, ninety six million dollar extension with
thirty million in signing bonus, makes him the sixth highest
annual salary for a wide receiver at thirty two million dollars.
(33:18):
Run me my money, and he is sitting there looking good,
and that is not good for the dollars.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
So long, it was not good for the Dallas Cowboys.
They didn't want him to play during the preseason. They
just wanted no.
Speaker 9 (33:32):
I didn't want him to play.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Yeah, but the thing is hard is they wasted three
weeks of his existence jailing with his quarterback.
Speaker 9 (33:45):
And you know, there was a point where I was,
you know.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Following your advice as you you gave it out in
fantasy football. Tier was one of those guys that I
never picked because he was a commander, yep. And when
they decided that they weren't going to pay him, I
was like, well, I'm not gonna pick him because he's
(34:13):
not going to be available.
Speaker 9 (34:15):
And now that he's back.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
With the Fold, then you know, I can see him
being a top ten wide receiver pick.
Speaker 9 (34:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
He's definitely somebody that a lot of folks will be
jumping at when they get their opportunity. Another guy that's
going to help the defense is Trey Hendrickson. He has
now signed his deal with the Bengals. They have reached
a agreement where he will get a fourteen million dollar
raise this season, boosting his twenty twenty five salary to
(34:47):
a thirty.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Million dollars salary.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
All this is going to be after he has decided
to be a hold in. At least he was at camp,
and he did make that move to be at camp.
So now the biggest domino that is out there is
one Micah Parsons. Jerald still doing his thing by not signing,
and he don't want to budget. But the question that
(35:13):
I have will the Micah deal get done in the
next day or so?
Speaker 2 (35:21):
I wish I could say that I knew, But the
way that it looks hard, Micah is a young guy,
and he's not gonna be as lenient as you and
I are in our old age, we're like, hey, let's
just get out money and keep it moving. But a
young guy like that makes it personal, right, and you know,
(35:45):
like his pride is hurt, and now that that's the issue,
he may just hold out and just say, look, trade me.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
Well, I think this deal is still gonna get done.
I see what's happen happening. You see the edge rushers,
maybe the deal is a little bit shorter. Let's not
forget he's still under contract.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
As we've been talking about, he's got three years.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
The Cowboys still technically have three years because they can
franchise tagg him twice if they really wanted to. He's
under salary. I mean, he's under contract. So we'll end
up seeing what's going to happen. But the cuts are
being made today, Roster spots are being freedom. And as
I've said before, the one thing that has bothered me
(36:30):
about all of this is a team that keeps winning
super well getting themselves into a Super Bowl situation is
the Philadelphia Eagles. And they have never ever had the
conversations that we're having about getting their guys signed. They
get their guys signed, they make sure it happens. They
(36:51):
made a decision to get off of Carson Wentz. They
are direct with their movements. They see the things that
they like and what they don't like. And if you
go out and have a great year early, we're gonna
sign you early to keep you here so you don't
come back to us and start bugging us. The other
part of this is turn that stuff into a signing bonus.
(37:14):
That way, the people got the money and they can
get the heck out the way if you want to
get off of them where it's not hurting you on
the salary cap. It's just crazy to me that I'm
not even that rich like that. But god, dog it,
let's make I know how to observe people. I know
how to observe people and see the people that are
(37:34):
making money and trying to figure out how we could
come to the agreement of staying out of the limelight
with it all.
Speaker 9 (37:42):
Ah, do you sound like Philip Rivers?
Speaker 3 (37:45):
Got dogg it, Gosh dang it, what are we doing
out here? You better not come in this huddle.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
Whenever you don't cuss and you say something in reference
to cussing, it always makes me laugh, like you might
as well.
Speaker 1 (37:59):
Have just said, no, gosh, dang it, we're not doing that. Mark,
We're not doing that. Also, the NFL, we figured out
what's happening in Cleveland. Kenny Pickett was traded. We'll talk
about that a little bit later. The Vikings get Carson
Wentz and they trade Sam Howe to the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
All kinds of.
Speaker 1 (38:21):
Things are happening in the NFL, and none of them
happening with the Dallas Cowboys except for tray Von Diggs
is back Mark's favorite player. Coming up next, we've got
Nick Shuey of Third and Longhorn coming in studio to
talk about the new partnership that we have right here
on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to our number two of the
(38:44):
morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. It is game week, folks, and we are
all excited. We heard from coach Sark a little bit earlier,
but now we are about to flip the script because
we got a pre game, and we got a post game,
and now is the time to understand exactly what we
(39:06):
are about to be doing.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
So what do you do?
Speaker 1 (39:09):
You bring in my guy, Nick Shuley and his producer
Mark Higgins of Third and Longhorns and I mean Third
and Longhorns, and now.
Speaker 10 (39:19):
We figure out where are we going after this, brother man,
Thanks for having us.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
We're excited to have you guys in here. Is is
big day for the iHeart family, the AM thirteen hundred
The Zone family, because your brand and what you guys
have been able to create over at Third and Longhorn
with all the former players that are ready to take
that next step and bring some insight and talk truly
(39:47):
about what they see on the football field is something
that a lot of folks don't get that access to.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
So talk about how that all came about as well.
Speaker 9 (39:56):
Man, it was.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
It was funny.
Speaker 10 (39:58):
I was at Collective for a meeting at Jeremy Hills
Jim and he was talking to a bunch of former
players and Mark and I back in the day, had
started help Lance Armstrong start his podcast, so we kind
of figured it out as we win and learn, And
I'm listening to Hills talk to these former players about
like whatever game was coming up that week, and I'm like, man,
I know there's a stupid sentence because everybody says this nowadays,
(40:20):
but I'm like, y'all need a podcast. And Hills was like,
we're in, let's go, and and so I said, okay, cool, well,
well let's start. He's like cool, you're gonna run it.
I was like great, sounds good. He's like no, no, no, no, no,
you're going to run it. And I'm like, hey, yeah,
I understand, and he'said, no, you're gonna host it, and
I was like, dud Higgs and I our whole lives
have been the other side of the camera. So so
(40:41):
this this world is new for us. But it's it's
been fun. It's been a learning experience. I respect the
heck out of everything you guys do, because it is
it's not something you can just do. You have to
like get better and practice and learn. And I remember
we had like, we had Troy Aikman on Lance's podcast
once and he said he said that he prepared, He
felt like he prepared more to announce games than he
(41:02):
did to play in them back in the day, which
I thought was fascinating. And then he realized that once
you do it. So but it's been fun. But so
we started it just kind of got a We got
a room at the Keller Williams building and where nobody were.
I knew nobody was because I knew there was only
meetings there like two times a month. I was like, cool,
I'm just gonna slide in there. I told Gary's assistant,
Gary Keller's assistant. I was like, We're just gonna slide
(41:23):
in here and hopefully nobody notices. And so we recorded
a couple episodes. We're all sitting at a conference table
and it was going great, and then I said, hey, Teresa,
we're gonna record this week. And Teresa was like, Nick,
Gary has a meeting in there, and the guys were
already on their way, and I was like, oh my gosh,
what are we going to do? And she's like, well,
why don't you just use our TV studio here in
the lobby. I was like, we have a TV studio
(41:44):
and she was like yeah, and so she sets us
up and so we end up in this TV studio.
It's phenomenal and and you know, everything else since then
it has just kind of taken off, and you know,
the world thinks we're in a huge studio that we
you know, we owned.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
But you know that's I guess I shouldn't have told
that story.
Speaker 11 (41:59):
Huh going to say we just gave away sauce like
to think you you can't hit a moving target, and
they just give him.
Speaker 12 (42:06):
To play here.
Speaker 3 (42:07):
That's why they don't.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
It's okay, I give up the ghosts all the time.
I appreciate I appreciate y'all keeping my seat warm over there.
I see y'all in my seat. They don't change my
setting without touching anything.
Speaker 10 (42:21):
Sir that hearts was already changing everything, so he said,
he said, he was messing with you exactly.
Speaker 9 (42:27):
I knew it all along. You know.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
That's what happens when you're enough dugouts for a long time,
you start to understand how to play them games on
the road.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
But you brought up I.
Speaker 9 (42:37):
Got a question for you.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
What is the thing that you've learned the most about
the guys that you work with?
Speaker 3 (42:46):
A couple of them read the production notes. A couple
of them don't. We will not. I told him the
other day.
Speaker 11 (42:54):
I said, I'm going to do the notes next week
in Sanskrit to see if anybody even opens the document.
Speaker 10 (42:59):
I spend hours getting all the notes ready, getting everything ready,
and we won't name names, but we had one guy
come in one time and be like, who we got today?
Speaker 11 (43:08):
Actually, to tell you the truth, I don't know anything
about this team.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
Yeah, you know Babers knows. Have y'all found out about
his papers?
Speaker 3 (43:17):
Oh?
Speaker 11 (43:17):
Oh, Rod has it all. It's the manifesto. He's been
writing it. It's interesting to see him come in. It's
like the kid in class who just had the notes
for the whole semester and it's all just about to
spill up.
Speaker 10 (43:28):
Yeah, we clean up. His notebook crumbles every time he
leaves the studio. So I mean, man, it is so
impressive to see the prep that Rod does and the
littatistics he knows and just the stuff he can pull out.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
It's it's amazing. It's impressive.
Speaker 1 (43:41):
Yeah, somebody who's worked with him, been in the studio
with him and seeing his growth throughout this process is
it's been amazing to watch him and his knowledge is
second to none. And I'm sure that everybody's feeding off
of each other in that room because there's so much
talent in that room.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
When you got Derek John and Alex.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Okafer, Fozzy Whittaker, and you got Jeremy Hills yourself, that
whole crew always brings something different every single day. So, Mark,
I wanted to ask you as far as the production
part of it, and like you said, you're writing the
notes and you're trying to hit those marks.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
How difficult is it because each guy has.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
Something that they want to say over the next guy
and the next guy.
Speaker 11 (44:25):
Yeah, And it's actually it's a good problem because all
the guys have such an amazing amount of ball knowledge,
and you know, one guy can cook on an offensive
thing and then you flip it over to Derek or
Alex on the defensive side. And it's just we just
have we have so much talent that it makes our
job easy and we can just let these guys wind
them up and go. And you spoke about Rod. I mean,
there's nobody more prepared on the show than Rod and
(44:46):
probably Fozzy, and it's just a good problem. I mean,
Derek Johnson, we were on a road show last week
and Derek said, you know, more people talk to me
about the show than my football career and he's accomplished exactly.
Speaker 2 (44:58):
Mark, you justo it, af You just you just said
that Pozzi and Ride are the guys that are always prepared,
so that only leads three other people.
Speaker 11 (45:09):
Well, and you know what those three, those three will
own up to it. But they also they do a
great job, so I'm not complaining it at all.
Speaker 10 (45:15):
I would say no, I would say, yeah, we won't
name names, but there are a few others that there
are a few others that prepare, but yeah, we won't
name the ones that don't.
Speaker 3 (45:24):
So tell us, tell us about it.
Speaker 1 (45:25):
We're talking to the crew from Third and Longhorn a
new part of the iHeart family. They will be hosting
the post game wrap up as we'll want to talk
about it to get you the latest and hot off
the press, and that's when everybody's emotions are a little
bit high. So you got to make sure you got
the right people in the right places for the post game.
(45:47):
Bo tell us what the format will be one for
people to tune in right after the ball game.
Speaker 10 (45:51):
Yeah, so we'll generally go live about ten minutes after
the game, and I think it'll get picked up. I
think it'll get picked up right after Craig's after Craig's Show,
right after the game. But we generally start off with
a quick, you know, recap of the game, quick kind
of synopsis, and then we'll go into the offensive side,
the defensive side, and my favorite part of the special teams,
and then we after about thirty minutes, we open it
(46:14):
up to YouTube questions, et cetera, and so we get
we get a lot of interesting questions and comments, and
it's actually pretty good stuff. Though it's not it's not
as bad as you think it would be. But and
also it's it's cool because we've seen an influx of
the other teams fans come in and start watching and
commenting and saying stuff, and once again, it's not as
bad as you think some of them are, but it's
(46:35):
you know, it's it's been pretty cool to kind of
get an instant reaction, and we try to answer things
as quick as possible and get to as many as
we possibly can. But yeah, it's it's just just kind
of have a little open format and we want the
fans to feel a part of it as well.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
And one of the things that I've always liked about,
you know, post game reaction is the calling aspect of it, right,
But you don't have the dump button there quick enough
to be able to stop some of these people, which
is why we don't take a lot of calls in here.
But I do appreciate the fact that you guys are
going to be able to, I guess, anticipate or answer
(47:08):
excuse me, answer the people's calls and emails and things
like that to get the latest reaction from them as well.
Speaker 3 (47:15):
Yeah, I think they're all sober too.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
Depending on how that game is going, it will lead
in the right direction.
Speaker 9 (47:22):
Mark, you got a question, No, ma, I have more
of a statement.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
You know, when you have people that have drink, you know,
frosty beers for four quarters, and what do you expect
them to say?
Speaker 9 (47:37):
They're going to be fired up with no filter.
Speaker 1 (47:42):
Yeah, I'd say you know exactly how that goes. You've
been around some of those people while that thing is going.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
On, fortunately, and they're passionate, man.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
That's that's what's important.
Speaker 1 (47:53):
So what are some of the biggest things that you
guys have seen. Obviously you went on that road to
show and a lot of good things have happened throughout
that road show, But what were some of the biggest
moments in that whole thing.
Speaker 10 (48:05):
It was cool to see how the show's connected, right,
we just we recorded, we see the YouTube comments those pieces,
but we don't get a chance to go out and
talk to people as much like DJ does. But I'm
not out there making appearances and that you can pick
me out of a lineup. But like it's cool to
hear feedback of like, hey, I watch the show every week.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
It's been so great.
Speaker 10 (48:23):
I was always wondering, you know who David ash was
or you know these things, and so that's what we've
tried to kind of pick through and we want to
have so many people we wanted to feel like kind
of opening of the family to and when guys come on,
we tell them you're welcome to come back anytime. And
guys like Adrian Phillips, Aaron Williams, all these guys have
(48:43):
really taken it up, taken us up on it, and
there there'll be a big part of the postgame show
and they come in a lot, and I think, I
think that's been the coolest part. But the connection for
me was I was kind of wowed of like, Wow,
this thing we all just kind of created in a
conference room is actually connecting with people.
Speaker 11 (48:58):
So it was cool it was taking off at least
had some potential. When we were at the Sugar Bowl
and people recognizing Nick in the bathroom and.
Speaker 10 (49:07):
I did my typical I was like, oh my gosh,
please meet Mark Higins.
Speaker 3 (49:10):
He produces the show.
Speaker 10 (49:11):
And then I just snuck out of the bathroom as
fast as I could.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
You did that at the baseball game to Mark's got guys.
Speaker 2 (49:18):
One of the things that I want to pay respect
to you guys on is, you know, when I've listened
to the show, y'all, y'all argue, the guys argue amongst themselves,
you know about their points, and it's the closest thing
that I've heard how Hard and I we hardly ever agree,
(49:39):
but when we do, it is like a bro hug moment.
Speaker 9 (49:44):
And just y'all, y'all have that every show. It's like,
I love that dynamic because the show. I'm glad that
y'all are on our heart.
Speaker 10 (49:52):
Now, well, man, we're excited to be here. We have
strategically separated the set. Now I sit in the middle,
Hills and Fazzier on the left the offensive players, and
then that Derek, Oak and Rod are on the right
side of the defense. We got to separate Oak and
Hills because they just they get after It's the funniest
dynamic and they're like best friends, but they just argue
(50:13):
with each other about everything.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
It's phenomenal. That's awesome. How often do you guys take.
Speaker 10 (50:17):
We usually take once a week, but once generally with interviews.
But once the season starts, we'll do the preview show
and then we do the post game show after. So yeah,
generally twice, but sometimes we'll add more depending on what's
going on.
Speaker 3 (50:29):
Well, we had a heavy week last week.
Speaker 1 (50:31):
Y'all were on the road, that's why everybody's resting their
voices this week to get ready for the big week.
Speaker 3 (50:36):
Well, we're glad to have you in the family.
Speaker 1 (50:38):
We're excited to be a part of this and we
look forward to all the content that you guys are
going to be putting now. Because I've known you for
a while, Nick, you do great work, and what Third
and Longhorn has become is a phenomenon and everybody's all
about it.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
So keep up the great work, man. Thank you.
Speaker 10 (50:55):
Yeah, thanks for having us man. We're excited to be
a part of the family and we're.
Speaker 3 (50:58):
Definitely gonna have y'all on again.
Speaker 1 (51:00):
Up New we got Mark vandermir the voice of the
Texans as they get ready to kick off the season
right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Great stuff from the guys from
Third and Longhorn, our new partner right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Another one of our
(51:20):
partners right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The
Zone is the voice of the Houston Texans as they
get ready to kick off their season September the seventh,
at three point twenty five on the road in Los
Angeles is the voice Mark vandermir Mark, how you doing,
Buddy Chattle.
Speaker 4 (51:42):
That good morning, big day, it's cut down day. Got
to get to fifty three by three o'clock and then
we'll see who else they pick up after that.
Speaker 1 (51:49):
So I'm interested in the understanding the process of this.
Now we understand how it goes down, but are there
any names that Texans fans should be looking for to
either exit or stay on the Texans?
Speaker 4 (52:07):
Well, a big question coming into this whole thing, this
deadline was the health of Joe Mixon. Is he gonna
be available?
Speaker 6 (52:12):
Is he not?
Speaker 4 (52:13):
Yesterday they cleared that up. He's on a reserve injured list.
It's not the regular IR it's a non football injury list,
but it's kind of the same thing where the earliest
he will be able to play is after week four.
So we'll see how that goes.
Speaker 3 (52:27):
But at least he.
Speaker 4 (52:28):
Gives you clarity on the running back position, in which
there's a big logjam. Because Nick Chobb has looked good.
Damian Pierce got back for the last preseason game. The
rookie Woodie Marks from usc looks good. You've got Jaward
Jordan from Louisville in a second year. He looks really
good in the preseason. And Dari Gounbuale, who's been outstanding
(52:48):
for this team as a third down back, special teams player,
kick the field goal in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 3 (52:53):
He does it all.
Speaker 4 (52:53):
He's a Swiss army knife, so what are you gonna do?
He can't keep five, So somebody.
Speaker 12 (52:58):
In that group is going to go.
Speaker 4 (53:00):
I think it might be Jordan's, but there could be
a surprise. Maybe there's a trade. Who knows. So that's
among the things we're looking at today.
Speaker 2 (53:07):
Well, that was gonna be my next question to you
was does this mean that Chub is gonna start?
Speaker 4 (53:16):
No question? In my mind, Chubb starts. If Chub does
not start, that means either he got hurt somehow or
Woody marks. I'm gonna think wood he marks over. Damian
Pierce looks so good to them they want to give
him the start. Now here's how it's gonna go against
the Rams. I think Chubb starts the game.
Speaker 12 (53:34):
Chubb looks good.
Speaker 3 (53:35):
Chub plays a lot.
Speaker 4 (53:36):
He gets about sixty percent of the running back snaps.
If Chubb doesn't look effective, but one of the other
two guys, Pierce or Woody Mars looks good.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
Those guys have the hot.
Speaker 4 (53:46):
Hand, hot legs, whatever, and they're gonna play a live
so I think they're gonna feel it out. They feel
like they can run the ball. They've done it well
in the joint practices with the Panthers and Detroit last
week and in the preseason games the last two anyway
at so a lot of encouraging things in the last
couple of weeks. But now you got to do it
for real, so we'll see how it goes.
Speaker 1 (54:06):
We're talking to the voice of the Texans, Mark vandermir Mark.
Speaker 3 (54:10):
I wanted to ask this.
Speaker 2 (54:11):
Because that defense is getting a lot of love.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
There's been a lot of.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
Changes and some of those guys are being very consistent
on that defensive side of the ball. How excited are
you about this Texans version of their defense?
Speaker 4 (54:26):
Yeah, I think this will be among the top two
or three defenses they ever had. Maybe it'll be the best,
but they got to go out and prove it. They
are loaded with playmakers. When you got the ends, we
talked about it last week with Will Anderson Junior and
Danil Hunter. You got Stingley and Kamari Lassner at the corners.
When you're that good on the edges and on the
outside of the secondary, that really helps everybody. As you
(54:49):
guys know, the D line is stacked. I think it's
tough cut there to get down to say ten. They
have linebackers for days. I don't know if they keep
five or six, probably six. They're gonna be some interesting
decisions here. They're not as deep as they want to
be at the corner spot.
Speaker 12 (55:05):
So there are certain positions on.
Speaker 4 (55:07):
The team where you can't lose anybody. You can't lose
Lassiter or Stingley for an extended period of time. You
cannot lose Nico Collins or Christian Kirk and wide receiver
for an extended period of time. Those guys have to
stay healthy. Obviously, the quarterback has to stay healthy. That's
like saying ye have outscore the opponent. But I'm just
giving you guys some other position groups to look out for.
Speaker 3 (55:27):
I wanted to ask you this.
Speaker 1 (55:28):
We're talking to the voice of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermere.
You know, we don't talk a lot of special teams,
but you definitely need to have good special teams going
into the season. How do you feel going into it
with the Texans special team.
Speaker 12 (55:45):
Well, it's a bit of a mystery a kickoff return.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
For every team in the NFL because, and I don't
know if we addressed this last week, the landing zone
between the twenty and the goal line and the ball
is going.
Speaker 3 (55:55):
To take weird hops.
Speaker 12 (55:56):
You know.
Speaker 4 (55:56):
Detroit kicked off kind of like a little lollipop.
Speaker 12 (55:59):
It was all a little lob.
Speaker 4 (56:01):
It was kind of like when you don't hit your
seven iron that far, kind of goes like one, twenty one,
twenty five, but it's still in the air. It's like,
not that satisfying, but that's what they were doing.
Speaker 9 (56:11):
Bear.
Speaker 12 (56:11):
Bear likes to just.
Speaker 4 (56:12):
Drive the ball and get weird hops inside the twenty
and ball skills for the returners when the kickoff is
going to go like that are going to be of
a premium.
Speaker 12 (56:22):
So this is gonna be interesting.
Speaker 4 (56:23):
You're gonna see a lot of turnovers in the kick
return game, a lot of returns, a lot of.
Speaker 12 (56:27):
Turnovers, a lot of action.
Speaker 4 (56:28):
Don't go to the refrigerator when they're doing kickoff returns.
But I think in general, special teams are very good
for the Texans under Frank Ross.
Speaker 3 (56:37):
Since he's been here.
Speaker 4 (56:38):
Whether it's the Demiico Ryans and the coaches before that.
This issue is though the long snapper got hurt. The
new guy who replaced John Weeks, who's been here since
the beginning of civilization twenty ten. So the new guy
got hurt. They went with another long snapper last week
didn't go as well.
Speaker 12 (56:55):
So now you take those things for granted in.
Speaker 4 (56:57):
Football, don't we It's like the plumbing and the electric
you know, you kind of take it for granted until
it goes out and then you're desperate for it.
Speaker 12 (57:05):
So we'll see how it goes there. But I think
I think they're gonna be okay.
Speaker 4 (57:07):
Austin Breakman, the new lock snapper, will be all right.
Tommy Taffs is a really good punter. Fair Band's gonna
be fine. I like they I like their kick coverage units,
whether it be putt or kickoffs, so I think they're
one of the better units in the league. But they
got to go out and play.
Speaker 3 (57:21):
Like I do.
Speaker 1 (57:22):
Want to follow up on that offensive line, you know,
I've been listening to Demico. He seems to be very
pleased with what he's seeing from the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
Obviously, you made the trade.
Speaker 1 (57:33):
Kenyon Green get released yesterday from the Philadelphia Eagles. So
it looks like things worked out the way that it
was headed to. But what have you taken away from
this offensive line?
Speaker 4 (57:47):
You know, I can name the nine in all likelihood,
I think pretty easily. However, I can't exactly tell you
how they're going to line up. If I had to guess,
I bet they're going to go with what they went
with in the joint practices last Thursday, which was Titus
Howard and right tackle and the rookie Ursery at left tackle.
Now that could change, though, because Cam Robinson is healthy now,
(58:09):
maybe they want to see him at left and Ursery
at right. So we still don't exactly know how they're
gonna line up. People are guessing, and maybe they're guessing right.
But I think that they've got enough guys and enough
of the philosophy in place where they can run the
ball well behind this line and play well enough and
play better than last year, because that's what we want
(58:29):
to see improvement. They've got to get better than they
were last year overall, and I think they will.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Well, that's a good problem to have if you have
options that tackle right.
Speaker 12 (58:40):
Yeah, I think it is.
Speaker 4 (58:41):
A good problem. You know, the other thing is you'd
love to say, oh, you got the five fingers and
a glove, you got the five guys, and you've been
set for years.
Speaker 12 (58:48):
And look, the Texans had a great line.
Speaker 4 (58:51):
In twenty ten to twenty eleven, unbelievable line. I mean
Dwayne Brown and Eric Winston, Chris Myers, those got weymit,
those guys were great. However, or it's hard to create that.
And they really got hurt, you know, so injuries often,
you know, they always do. They test you immediately. I
think they're probably one maybe too deep a tackle, depending
(59:12):
on how they moved Titus Howard around at each side.
And I like that. And I think they have enough guards.
And they got two centers, maybe three if they keep
the rookie Eli Cox on practice squad. I think they
have enough to make it work. But as they say this,
you'd love to be able to say these are the five.
Speaker 12 (59:28):
You can't say that yet.
Speaker 4 (59:29):
Maybe they knowing on to drive a race borts somewhere
in the building, but I don't have it for you
right now.
Speaker 1 (59:34):
Mark, before we let you go the wide receiver position,
there's a lot of names and a lot of talent
out there, not everybody's going to be able to get
on the field. Obviously, Christian Kirk will be there, Jaydon
Higgins will be there, and Nico Collins will be there.
But what's the latest on Tank Dell and all the
other wide receivers.
Speaker 4 (59:55):
I think Del will be on some kind of ir list.
Of course, he hasn't done anything, and it's gonna be
a lot term recovery for him. What you're looking at
is Christian Kirk, Nico Collins. Nico's one of the best
in the league. Kirk's gonna catch a lot of balls
for this team. I think Xavier Hutchinson is their number
three right now. He's had a great camp. The rookies
from Iowa State. They have three cyclones because Hutchinson is
(01:00:16):
one of them. Jalen Knowle and Jayden Haagens they're on
the teams.
Speaker 3 (01:00:19):
You got five right there. Now, do you keep.
Speaker 4 (01:00:21):
Braxton Barrios as a punt returner, kick returner, whatever returner.
Do you keep him as a six? And then go
from there?
Speaker 12 (01:00:30):
Do you keep seven?
Speaker 4 (01:00:31):
Last year they kept seven, they kept Stephen Simms as
a return man. I think they keep six. I think
Barrios probably has that spot, but we'll see. I mean Tuesday,
This Tuesday in the league is always full of surprises.
Speaker 12 (01:00:43):
These last two three days.
Speaker 4 (01:00:44):
Where teams are making cuts. You've seen trades made, You've
seen deals made. I think the receiver crew is good,
but like I said, the top two of the proving.
Speaker 12 (01:00:53):
Guys over the long haul, they cannot.
Speaker 4 (01:00:55):
Get banged up for a long period of time until
further notice, because we don't know how good the rookies
are going to be a lot of promise shown, but
you have to see it in a regular season context.
Speaker 9 (01:01:05):
You guys know.
Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
That Mark didn't Pierce have some returns last year.
Speaker 12 (01:01:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:01:12):
I like Pierce a lot as a kick returner, not
a putt returner. Pierce is a kick returner bludgeons people.
I mean, he's a hammer, so you definitely want to
see him do that. He also can catch the ball.
He's got good ball skills as a running back. So
I like Pierce as a returner for sure. I think
Barrios could be another guy back there with him because
you never know whether they're gonna kick it, and Barrius
(01:01:32):
can do some things with the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:01:33):
He's kind of quick.
Speaker 12 (01:01:35):
But I think Barriers as a punt returner.
Speaker 4 (01:01:36):
Would be my favorite right now, although Jael and Nola
the rookie from Iowa State could possibly have that and
maybe there's a surprise there also.
Speaker 12 (01:01:44):
So I mean, this is what it's all about, right guys.
Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
And you're probably doing it with the Longhorns right now.
With a lot of new faces every year in college football,
who's gonna do what? And it's fun to play that game.
Speaker 3 (01:01:54):
And we won't know it till we see it. That's right.
Speaker 1 (01:01:56):
You got to get on the field and make it happen,
and you will definitely make could happen next weekend from
La as the Texans travel to the Rams.
Speaker 3 (01:02:05):
As always, Mark, we look forward to talking to you next.
Speaker 1 (01:02:08):
Week because it will be game week for the Texans.
Speaker 3 (01:02:12):
Be careful, my friend.
Speaker 6 (01:02:13):
Let's go.
Speaker 12 (01:02:14):
Let's go go Longhorns too.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
That's right at the horseshoe. That's right at the horseshoe.
Speaker 1 (01:02:18):
When we come back, we'll have the world's strongest man
giving you his world's strongest take right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the zone
you heard to beat dropped. You know who it is,
WWE Hall of Famer and the world's Strongest Man, d
Mark Henry bringing you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:02:42):
Take it away, big fellow arch, what's happening?
Speaker 9 (01:02:46):
You know what time it is.
Speaker 1 (01:02:48):
It's time for them people to get out of there
that keep making all that noise.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
It's time for the world's strongest man to give you
the world's strongest take horse.
Speaker 9 (01:03:00):
That is an option. I'm down in the lobby.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
Today because the uh they kicked me out of my
room early. But my take today is about the Los
Angeles Raiders.
Speaker 9 (01:03:16):
H are the Raiders under rated team? And yes, they're
in a division where they.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Have to face a perennial Pro and Super Bowl contender
and the Chiefs, and you start looking at second third place.
From that point, I really do think that Seattle is
a team and the Rams are teams in San Francisco.
(01:03:45):
Every team in the West is a threat to them.
But they made some drastic improvements this season.
Speaker 9 (01:03:54):
They upgraded on their offensive line.
Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
Hold on, hold on, the people in the West are.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
Who the teams that are are that's going to affect
them the most are going to be the Chiefs and
the Broncos and the Chargers and the Broncos and the
Charge I said, the Ram Yeah, that's what I like
the Charger and you said the forty nine ers, So
I wanted to make sure we cleared that up.
Speaker 13 (01:04:23):
Yeah, anyway, getting where I'm going, Yeah, the team is
upgraded when they signed Mary.
Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
Cooper who as as of yesterday, and bringing in that
offensive line together and having brought Bauers, a guy that's.
Speaker 9 (01:04:48):
A top five tight end in the league, and.
Speaker 2 (01:04:51):
Then you bring in Genty who is going to be
a top five running back in the league. Uh Geno Smith,
all he needed was pieces, he needed an assortment of
weapons around him.
Speaker 9 (01:05:05):
They brought in the rookie wide.
Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
Receiver six five ran a four to four flat forty
and it's been killing.
Speaker 9 (01:05:13):
Has scored five touchdowns in the preseason.
Speaker 2 (01:05:17):
Like not to mention they have another six to five
wide receiver Colin Johnson former longharn who is on that
roster and Rock being six' six and the feature of that,
OFFENSE i think it's going to be it's going to
be trouble for teams to cover all these big sixty five.
(01:05:37):
Guys and then you bring in a polished veteran wide
receiver like A Mark, cooper who they brought in To
Mark cooper because they were thinking that they may have
some time Without, myers Which myers had like eighty five
catchers last year for over one thousand yards and four,
(01:05:59):
Touchdowns so they have an a short min of.
Speaker 9 (01:06:01):
Weapons there's a.
Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
Lot of teams that wish that they had. Those but
the question is will the defense be be hold? UP i,
mean you Got Max, krosby you got All.
Speaker 9 (01:06:15):
Pro, linebacker.
Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
And you brought In adams to play safety and that
kind of rover type of.
Speaker 9 (01:06:25):
Spot but is that? Enough what's say?
Speaker 1 (01:06:28):
You, well it will be interesting to see because of
the Fact i'm a big fan Of tyreeve Ty Reed
wilson From Texas. Tech he was somebody that was supposed
to be the next guy. Up when you start to
look at that. Team you brought In Thomas, booker the
fourth From philadelphia on the. Trade but the thing THAT
(01:06:49):
i always look, at and this is SOMETHING i don't,
know maybe it's just my. Craziness when you're in THE
Afc west with all those quarterbacks that you just mess
in who they, are you have to be able to
defend those passing, games AND i don't know if their
(01:07:09):
secondary is up to. Snuff when you gotta go up
against A Patrick, mahomes when you've got to go up Against.
Speaker 3 (01:07:19):
Justin herbert.
Speaker 9 (01:07:23):
Is going to have to prove it, hard.
Speaker 1 (01:07:25):
Right i'm with you on, that but that is WHY
i continue to say that about when you look at
these teams and how they are being. DEVELOPED i agree with.
You they've taken care of the offensive side of the.
Ball they've done something With Pete. Carroll but you look
at what The chiefs, Are they're gonna be.
Speaker 3 (01:07:41):
Better to me.
Speaker 1 (01:07:42):
Because Rashi rice is going to be back before he
has to go get. Suspended we'll see what happens. There
The broncos Whip Bow knicks has gotten a lot, better
and we got to try to figure out What Justin herbert.
Is to your, point he's got to prove, it AND
i agree with you a wholeheartedly on. That but people
still believe that they are the better.
Speaker 3 (01:08:01):
Team so we'll. See i'm with.
Speaker 1 (01:08:03):
You I'm i'm interested to see what The raiders are
going to do because that, division even THOUGH i said.
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
That The chiefs is there is to.
Speaker 1 (01:08:13):
Lose The chiefs have played a lot of football over
the last three and a half four. Seasons and, eventually
you know as well AS i, do that check engine
like been running.
Speaker 9 (01:08:24):
Hot there you go there you.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
Go SO i take it as a no that you
feel like that The raiders are going to be drastically
improved from last.
Speaker 3 (01:08:36):
Season i'm gonna give you a, no but a partial.
Speaker 1 (01:08:39):
No it's, like you, know if you do extra credit,
WORK i might round it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:44):
Up you know What i'm.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
Saying if they go out there and do extra, CREDIT
i might round that grade.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
Up i'm grading on a. Curve, Mark i'm grading on a.
Speaker 2 (01:08:51):
Curve, Brother, well you kind of have to because they're
not proving and the same thing as account.
Speaker 9 (01:09:00):
Boys we always talk, about you, know that defense last
year not doing.
Speaker 2 (01:09:05):
Well Parch there's a four hundred and fifty pounds defensive
lineman that just got released from The Tampa Bay buccaneers
THAT i feel like The, cowboys with as horrible as
the defensive tackles have, played they need to pick that
guy Off.
Speaker 3 (01:09:22):
Waivers that's What, well first, off they ain't gonna be
able to pick him.
Speaker 9 (01:09:25):
Up that is, Why, well nobody's gonna be able to
pick him.
Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
Up when we come, back we'll close out the show
and send you To Dan. Patrick we'll hear from a
couple of players as they are locked in For Ohio,
state right here on The Morning kickoff On Sports RADIO
am thirteen.
Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
Hundred that's.
Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
Off if you missed any part of the, show get

And longhorns postgame immediate. Reactions speaking of, postgame speaking of the,
(01:10:30):
game a lot of activity happening yesterday from The Texas
longhorn football. Team we'll hear more from coach start, tomorrow
but we'll also hear from the. Players but right, Now
Coach sark was asked about using last year's game the
loss as.
Speaker 8 (01:10:49):
Motivation that was last year's, team different, team different, people different.
Personnel you, know you use it when you need. It you,
KNOW i didn't major in, it BUT i used it
WHEN i needed. It BUT i felt, like, man we're
getting a little complacent training, camps getting a little. Mundane
you kind of always have that in my back. Pocket
but it's a different, team you, know different, Leaders they've
(01:11:10):
got a different, team everybody's you, know it's very. Different you,
know at the end of the, day that stone walking
out of The Cotton, bowl you, know last. Year but
at the end of the, day this is a new,
challenge new, journey new mission that we're, on and so
that's kind of been our.
Speaker 3 (01:11:23):
Focus not only has it been there.
Speaker 1 (01:11:25):
Focus he was also asked how do you prep for
Uh Ohio state's new, schemes new, coordinator and just getting
into the.
Speaker 8 (01:11:34):
Mindset the scheme portion of it, is you, know what
do you what are you calling, it how are you designing?
It what are you blocking? It versus the personnel the
player is how how are you Gonna how's that person
going to make it more difficult or maybe less difficult for,
you depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the. PLAYER
(01:11:55):
i you, know my humble opinion is they're not going to.
Change why would you change number one? Defense you know
in the, conference a great run in the, playoffs they
had a really good offense last. Year you, Know Coach
day's fingerprints are all over. That they kept the entire
defensive staff outside of the defensive play. Callers so you,
know it's kind of, like you, know, yeah they're Gonna
they're gonna, evolve just like we evolve every. Year BUT
(01:12:17):
i think the premise of who they are in all
three phases is going to remain really.
Speaker 1 (01:12:20):
Consistent you, Know i've always been a part of that
conversation as well to where it's, Like, okay what are
you using from last year to motivate? Them but then
he also always comes back with it's a different, team
it's a different. Mindset it's, ay the journey is still the,
journey and you still want to get to The Promised,
(01:12:40):
lamb but there is a.
Speaker 3 (01:12:41):
Process you got different.
Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
Personality he, said he really loves this team because of
the energy that they. Bring it's the quiet confidence that they.
Have but some of those aren't a quiet confidence because
my Guy Colin, simmons Who i've said over and over,
again he is a real.
Speaker 3 (01:13:04):
One he is going.
Speaker 1 (01:13:05):
To tell you exactly how he feels about certain things and,
well he's just glad That Ohio state has a.
Speaker 14 (01:13:13):
Quarterback, Honestly i'm just excited that they chose a. Quarterback you,
know there's really nothing major behind. It i'll, say you,
know it's, no it's no target for, him and nothing like.
That i'm just glad that they have a quarterback That i'm.
Speaker 1 (01:13:29):
Ready to say it and you, Know, marcus play that,
Again play play that one more time for me because
of the fact that people are trying to make it
seem like he is a little too out.
Speaker 3 (01:13:43):
There but here's the.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
DEAL i saw somebody post it is when you try
to media train somebody and he drives his, best but
he's got to tell you exactly what's on his.
Speaker 3 (01:13:55):
Heart AND i have no problem with.
Speaker 14 (01:13:57):
It, Honestly i'm just excited that they chose. Aquarterback you,
know there's really nothing major behind. It i'll, say you,
know it's, no it's no target for, him and thening like.
That i'm just glad that they have a quarterback That
i'm ready to sack number one Because i'm the one.
There it, Is i'm number one Because i'm the, one you,
(01:14:17):
know because he has that. Mindset there is nobody AND
i mean this, sincerely And Coach sark talked about this
about the offensive line and what their challenges. Are so
When Trevor gooseby was dealing with the, injury they had
to move somebody else out, there and not somebody else
had to go up Against Colin. Simmons every single day
(01:14:41):
you look at This texas offensive line and the question
mark which is them because they haven't had an opportunity
to play together at a high level so. Far but
they are going up against WHAT i believe will be
the best college football defense it's this. Season And i'm
not being hyperbolic about. It i'm being one hundred percent
(01:15:04):
real WHEN i say, this And i'm saying it with my.
CHEST i believe that This texas defense has an opportunity
to be one of the best that we've seen at
this university in quite some. Time and let's not get
a twist that there has been a lot of talent
(01:15:25):
on the defensive side of the ball for The university Of.
Texas they have put up some really good. Numbers BUT
i think that this team has the chance to be
special on the defensive side of the. Ball, yes everybody
wants to talk About arch and rightfully.
Speaker 1 (01:15:43):
So don't see no reason for us not to talk
about that young. Man he's. Excited we'll hear From arch
tomorrow as. Well but let me just tell you, this
when you think about this, defense you need to understand
that these guys are not afraid of.
Speaker 3 (01:16:02):
Anything they have a quiet confidence about.
Speaker 1 (01:16:06):
Them they believe that they are the ones to get it,
done And i'm not here.
Speaker 3 (01:16:13):
To say that they're. Not So i'm excited to see.
Speaker 1 (01:16:17):
This i'm also excited about the fact That Dave portnoy
Of Barstool sports has been denied access into the stadium per.
Report but it Was Yahoo's sports that said it was
fox decision not to Have portnoy on the big noon kickoff,
(01:16:41):
desk which is gonna be on the, Field so it
Wasn't Ohio. State it was all About fox's, decision because,
again you can't bring somebody in there that is absolutely
Bashing Ohio state and have them on the field where
he is probably gonna get some stuff thrown at.
Speaker 3 (01:17:03):
Him number, one but number, two he's been.
Speaker 1 (01:17:07):
Talking so bad About Ohio state the entire time and disrespecting.
Speaker 3 (01:17:12):
The head coach Of Ohio. State, yes us.
Speaker 1 (01:17:15):
As, MEDIA i understand freedom of, speech but there are.
Speaker 3 (01:17:19):
Consequences what's your freedom of? Speech somebody gotta pay for.
Speaker 1 (01:17:23):
