(02:20):
officially the head coach of the Texas men's basketball team.
After we're leaving one Rodney Terry Chris del Conte has
made the announcement and we will have an interview, I
mean an interview. We will have the press conference today
at eleven am.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
I believe you can watch it on LH in the app.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
I'm not sure just yet about all of the audio,
but you definitely will hear it tomorrow. As Sean Miller
is officially announced as the Texas head coach of the
Texas men's basketball team. He will address the media today
and there will be a lot to talk about tomorrow,
and I'll bring it up again a little bit later

(03:04):
in the show, but I do want to talk about this.
The Texas women handled their business yesterday as they advanced
to the Sweet sixteen for the fourth time in five
years under one Vick Schaeffer, and they are headed to
Birmingham after a sixty five to forty eight victory over Illinois.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
The game was they fought hard.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Let's just say that Illinois tried to fight hard early
in the ballgame. But that Texas basketball team, they play
so hard on defense. They continue to put pressure on
everybody that handles the basketball. They make it tough for
your best player to get off and the main reason
why is because Rory Harmon is a defensive person that

(03:53):
you don't want to see. She will guard you ninety
four feet and she'll run the team. She does every
thing the right way, and she is fundamentally sound. Yes
there's gonna be some days she's not shooting the ball well, Yes,
there's gonna be some days that she is not making
all of the right passes. But one thing is definitely

(04:13):
for sure. She is going to show up and she
is going to show out on that defensive end. Yesterday
she had seven assists to her four points. I saw
her in pregame because I was there early enough yesterday
that I was impressed with what I was seeing, the
way she was moving. And I know that a lot
of folks were late to the ballgame, and the only

(04:33):
reason why they were late.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Is because the game was a one o'clock game.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
People had to work, kids are back from spring break
and they were going to school, so it was tough
for people to get there and traffic was awful midday,
and that's why Texas didn't get the eleven thousand fans
that they would normally get into the house. But they
did have nine thousand fans that truly loved this basketball team,
and they are able to show up every single time.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Man Craig Way had the final call yesterday.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
For the fourth time in his five seasons as head coach,
Vick Schaefer will take the Texas women's basketball.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Team to the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Final score this afternoon here in Austin, the Texas Longborn
sixty five the Illinois Fighting Aliini forty eight. Next up Birmingham,
Alabama and matchup number two with the Tennessee Lady Balls.
As Texas wins its thirty third game of the season
to advance to the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Texas moves to thirty three and three.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
And you heard Craig Way talking about how this next
matchup against Tennessee is something that is going to be
important for this basketball team. They continue to work hard
and continue to play for each other. He thinks this
team is very, very special and I've got a chance
to see them up close and personal a lot this year,
none more than Craig Way. And here's Craig Way, big

(06:00):
Schaeffer in the post game.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Well, Vic, I know you hear the excitement of the fans.
You've been here five seasons. You've taken the team to
the Sweet sixteen four times now in the five seasons.
How about the magic this team did for you this
afternoon and going right to work.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, pretty good first half.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
Loved our defense, obviously that second quarter was special. I
screwed them up offensively in the fourth quarter, so I'll
take the responsibility for that. But when you got twenty
two point lead, I thought we made some bad decisions too.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
But it is what it is. We just I think
we have some kids.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
That retired to a little bit, and so anyway, we'll
regroup and get ready to go to Birmingham.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
How about your thoughts on Joquelina coming off the bench
and giving you a career high today.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Well, again, when she plays within herself, you know that's
what she can bring. And again at Texas, it's just
a matter of being on time and being where you're
supposed to be. Sometimes either gets you on the bench
or get you in the lineup. And you know, again
for her today, glad to see it. We need that

(07:07):
from our four player. It just opens up the playbook
when I can play her at four and Maddie at three,
and I thought Madison was really special. The first half
ends up nine out of eighteen and six rebounds, twenty points,
so really, really, really special day and again glad to
see us advance.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
All right, now, for the record, I'm gonna let you
enjoy this at least for a little bit. But I
got to ask you your thoughts about matching up with Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yet again.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
He had a great game here back on January twenty third.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Yeah, I mean, they're obviously really good and they're playing well,
they're hot, and you know it's.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Just two SEC teams, you know, meeting in the sweet sixteen.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
So they played really well against Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
I got to watch him, So.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
You know, we'll have to get ready, and you know,
you're gonna have to have your legs, You're gonna have
to have your breath, you've got to have everything. They're
gonna press you. And again you've got to attack pressure
with pressure. So can't get can't get to playing on
your heels against that group. You got to go at them.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Hey, enjoy this one right now, Vick, congratulations.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
All right, Praise Lord, do the more, Praise the Lord
and hook the hornes. And that's exactly right.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Vick Shaeffer and his squad continue to event and he
thinks this team is really really special. And here's Vic
Shaeffer talking about Tennessee and what the expectations are.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Well, it was a knockdown drag out for sure. I'm
sure their coach is going to be glad to be
in the game. She wasn't here, you know, she was
having a baby. And so they're obviously been playing together longer.
Now their chemistry is better.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
It can't play like all tied up and stuff.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
So I'm gonna play this team before so we know
what it's gonna look like.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
We can't play horse with them. They're They're a good
horse shooting team. I would say they make everything they
look at.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
Their style is very unique and very successful so far
this year.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
You know, their subbing is great. They're all in shape.
They go ten deep. So the biggest thing for us
is going to be focused, guard heavy. They play hard, trap,
they press everything. But as long as we you know, focus.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
In practice, go over like press, attack and.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
All that stuff. I'm not trading my guards for anybody.
And you know, if it's going to be that kind
of game. I like the ammunition I got.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
I like it too, Vic. I'm not looking forward to
this matchup. The last time they played each other was
January to twenty third here at the mood and Texas
gets the victory eighty to seventy six. It was a big,
big game for Madison Booker who had twenty six and
Taylor Jones, who continues to play some really good basketball

(09:32):
she had twenty one. But the player of the game
this past game was Jack with Linda and this team
was so excited for her and they could not express
their happiness.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Enjoy.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Welcome back to our number two of the Morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
It's a Longhorn or a Texas Tuesday excuse me edition of.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
The Morning Kickoff.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
We started off our number one talking about the Texas
women as they advance to the Sweet sixteen for the
fourth time in five years under Vick Schaeffer, and they
are headed to Birmingham as they had a sixty five
to forty eight victory over Illinois and now they get
a chance to take on the Tennessee Volunteers, the team

(10:19):
that they beat on January to twenty third. By the
final score was eighty to seventy six. Texas Pro Day
is going to be alive and popping. You can watch
that today on the SEC Network from one to four
We also got a chance to talk to Joe Cook
of Inside Texas about the new hire of Sean Miller.

(10:41):
That press conference will take place at eleven am. You
can watch that on the LHN app and of course
we'll have all of it tomorrow and today on the
Craigway Show as Craig Way and his crew will break
it down him acamp Parker will break.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
It down as well with the new hire.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
But I want to get into the NCAA Women's Basketball
Tournament because there was a lot of news that was
broken yesterday. And one of the biggest things that happened
yesterday was Juju Watkins, one of the top players in
the nation, recognized by everybody. You've seen her on all
the commercials, You've seen her talking during all these times.

(11:27):
As matter of fact, I got a little joke about
her and what was going on. But she ended up
getting hurt yesterday. And let's just say it's not gonna
be good.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
Get away more great defense from the Trojans, and Watkins
goes down hard and she's grabbing her right knee quickly,
grimacing in pain.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
When it's that quiet and the announcers don't say anything
that lets you know how bad the injury truly is.
She had a fast break and two players kind of
closed the gap on her and a lot of players,
I mean a lot of people believe that in any
other situation, there should have been a fight happening after that,

(12:32):
I saw some people say, if this happened in a
men's game, what do you think would have happened. She's
the star player. She is the face of college basketball,
to be quite honest with you, since there's no more
Caitlyn Clark. But that was something that she was not

(12:53):
prepared for. No one was expecting her to be injured. Obviously,
every time you go out on the court, you're not
expecting that either.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
But she ended up tearing her.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Acl and now she is out for the rest of
the year. USC went on to win the basketball game,
but it's still definitely something that a lot of folks
are paying attention to.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
As I said, she was.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
One of the most recognizable figures in this women's game.
A lot of folks basically were saying she was replacing
Caitlin Clark as that player because she is definitely one
of the best players in the nation. I mean, like
there's no doubt about it. But now we sit and
we wait, and a lot of people are thinking that

(13:42):
that was a dirty play.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
I didn't think it was dirty.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
I didn't think it was something that they were intentionally
trying to hurt her. I just think that they were
going to make a play and they weren't letting her
get to the basket, and she was ready to make
a cut and she ended up tearing her acl. So
prayers out to her and her family as she starts
her road to recovery. As I said, USC ended up

(14:07):
getting the win and convincing fashion, but now they have
to regroup and get things going without their best player.
So I'm hopeful that she can make a healthy return.
And somebody that has made a healthy return is one
Page Buker, Paige Becker's from University of Connecticut. She played

(14:27):
her final game yesterday in stores and look, I've said
this before and I'll say it again. She missed an
entire year, She missed an entire year dealing with injuries,
and she played five seasons. Well, she was at Yukon
for five seasons. But she was somebody that I believe

(14:52):
would have been one of the best players to ever
play college basketball and women's college basketball and nobody was
really talking about her when she came out of high school.
She was a special, special type of player. Her and
Jalen Suggs. Y'all remember Jalen Suggs that played at Gonzaga

(15:13):
and then went on to he's in the NBA.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Now, they went to.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
The same high school together, So you had two of
the best players men and women playing at the same
high school. And now she is going to the next
round to finish out her career. But I wanted to
bring up this stat because it was something that I
saw that I thought was very, very unique, and a

(15:37):
lot of people didn't truly understand it. When you think
about what Paige Beckers has meant to the university into
the college game, I want you to hear these numbers.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
And this was brought to you by Bleacher Report.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Paige Beckers is the only player in college basketball, WNBA
and NBA to shoot fifty four and ninety percent and
lead the country and assist the turnover ratio.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
She is one of one. And what do I mean
by that?

Speaker 1 (16:13):
She shot fifty four percent from the field in her career,
She shot forty percent from three point land in her career,
and she's a ninety ninety point I mean ninety percent
free throw shooter, and she has three point eight assists

(16:35):
to turnover and she's the only person to ever achieve
that goal. Think about that. That is unreal for a
player in a season. I'm not career, sorry, in a season,
but I don't care if it's a good career or season.
It's still unbelievable. And she plays for Gino Ariema, who

(16:57):
you already know is on twelve all the time and
he can't stop smiling and giving out good things about her.
And speaking of Yukon, have you seen the latest from
one Danny Hurley. Danny Hurley is being sued as we speak.

(17:18):
The NCAA and Raleigh Police have launched an investigation into
Yukon's athletic department, per source. Following the Huskies loss to Florida,
Dan Hurley went on an explicitive excuse me explicative field
rent and was caught on video by a member of

(17:39):
the media.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
Yukon's director of men's.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
Athletics Basketball Communications, demanded the deletion of the video and
threatened the reporter. I'm told that the NCAA is consider
impossible postseason ban and loss of scholarship spots. Local law
enforcement is an investigating the matter, as making threats in

(18:04):
North Carolina is illegal.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
I think making threats anywhere it should be illegal. I
don't think it's just in North Carolina.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
If you haven't seen it, He's been cussing up a
storm and they're suspending and then it comes out that
they're probably gonna suspend them and he will be fined
twenty thousand dollars and they have already said that he
needs to write a letter of apology to the NCAA
and Todd Golden.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Now I'm all for all of this. I mean, Danny.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Hurley has been on a tangent for such a long time.
It's kind of been annoying, to be quite honest with you,
for a coach to go and be as wild as
he has been here lately. Now some people will say, well,
he's a championship coach. Well, Bobby Knight was a championship

(18:58):
coach too, And I don't see a lot of people
coming to defend Bobby Knight and what he's been able
to do. But I'm just curious to when does this
all stop? When does this change for a lot of
these people, When does the movement and the conversation go from,
hey man, we just got beat on the basketball court.

(19:21):
I was caught up in the emotion of the situation,
and coaches are allowed to do that, but you're not
allowed to rate and then threaten somebody and tell them
that you're going to ruin their lives. Yeah, he said that.
He said, I can ruin you to a reporter. Now,
I was always told this as a young man and

(19:44):
as a player that ended up playing professional baseball. My
manager always told me I have the power of the pen.
I can make you look good. I can write up
a report, and with a glowing report, I can also
make you look bad. So the power of the pen
was something that I've always hated because I felt like

(20:06):
I was being threatened by that.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
But here's the reality. When you go after reporters.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
Who are there to follow your team, don't you think
you should be cool with them?

Speaker 2 (20:22):
Now, there are some.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
Guys you don't need to be cool with, but you
could be cordial. There's some guys you don't want to
talk to, and that's fine. But when you get to
the point where you start to threaten people. How many
times have we heard people talk about I'm gonna take
your credential away. It happens all the time. Oh you
see it on the internet. Oh, you should take their
credentials away. It's like, what, No, it's not that type

(20:48):
of deal. So we'll see what ends up happening here
moving forward. But prayers out to Juju Watkins. Paige Becker
is one of the best players that I've seen in
college basketball, and I've been a big fan of hers
since she came out, and I've been saying it for
a while that we should have done a better job
of promoting her. We should be doing a better job

(21:10):
of promoting Juju. And of course there's gonna be another
Madison Booker needs to be promoted as well. When we
come back, I want to talk to NBA Lakers losing
Lebron's return and ad is back.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
Does that change anything for you folks?

Speaker 1 (21:27):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. I've been talking a lot about
this Sean Miller press conference, and I wanted to make
sure that everyone knows that we will be carrying his
press conference right here on AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
So make sure you tune in to the press conference

(21:49):
It will start at eleven o'clock and it can be
heard right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Craig Way and myself and Camp Parker will all be
in attendance today, so we will have so much to
break down and of course bring it all to you
this afternoon on the Craig Way Show, as Craig will

(22:11):
be able to talk about it right here. I wanted
to get into the NBA because the NBA is the
season is almost over. It seems like the MVP is
going to Shay Gil Chris Alexander, although I still believe
that there's an outside chance that the Joker, whose numbers
are even better than his MVP seasons, is in contention.

(22:35):
But okay, see, with the best record and being able
to do what they've been able to do being led
by Shay Gilchris is more than deserving of the MVP.
But last night Anthony Davis Street Clubs made his return
and a lot of folks were or highly anticipating his return.

(22:57):
The Dallas Mavericks need him to play because of the
fact that they are looking at the play in game
and the possibility of being in the play in game.
They're closing that gap quickly to be able to get
into that. But you also have to look at the
fact that this is a team that a lot of
folks are still mad at. They're sitting at the eleventh

(23:19):
seed trying to get in. They got the same exact
record as the Phoenix Suns, and having Anthony Davis back
is going to push the envelope for them. The one
thing that really sucks is that they don't have Kyrie Irving,
but they were able to go to Brooklyn yesterday Anthony
Davis played twenty seven minutes.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
They said that they were going.

Speaker 1 (23:39):
To pace him in and not have him go off
full speed, but Anthony Davis played twenty seven minutes, scoring
twelve points and was effective on both ends of the floor.
Didn't really push himself too hard, but it was good
to see him be back in there. Another team that
was happy for a return was the Los Angeles Lakers,
bringing back Lebron James, but the chemistry was a little

(24:03):
bit off and Lebron, who played thirty seven minutes in
this game, was nine of eighteen from the floor, O
three from the free throw line. He had twenty four points.
Luca Dancies nine of twenty three. See this is the thing.
You look at those numbers and you say, oh man,
he had thirty two points, ten of eleven from the
free throw line. For Luca, Lebron was six of seven

(24:25):
from the free throw line. But between the two of them,
they took forty one shots and Lebron was fifty percent
but Luca was thirty nine percent, so in four of
ten from three point lamp. So you start to look
at what's going on with this basketball team for the Lakers,
and you're wondering, is this team going to be able

(24:48):
to keep this up?

Speaker 2 (24:50):
Now?

Speaker 1 (24:50):
A lot of people are looking at the Lakers and
believing that they're gonna be one of the top dogs
in there. Lebron's just getting rolling. By the way, BRONI
had thirty nine points in the G League, but we
won't talk about that because a lot of people still mad.
But anyway, you start looking at what the Phoenix, I
mean not the Phoenix, but the OKC Thunder in the West,
they're fifty nine and twelve. Fifty nine and twelve. The

(25:14):
Cavaliers in the East are fifty seven and fourteen. These
are the two best teams in the NBA, one for
the East, one for the West. But you look at
the Lakers, and you look at the Grizzlies forty three
and twenty eight, they're sitting at four and five. The
number two seed, believe it or not, folks, is the
Houston Rockets.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
Look.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
I've been talking about this, the Houston Rockets. They don't
think you know what I'm saying. They just go out
there and they hoop. They don't care if they're young.
Because Emi Adoka can coach. Y'all can talk about the
scandal and what he had going on in Boston. That
team that he built in Boston is the one that

(25:57):
won the championship. He's doing the same thing in h Town.
And I know a lot of people are saying, well,
I don't think Houston's ready. I don't think Houston will
be ready for that.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Why not? Why not?

Speaker 1 (26:10):
If the players are buying into what the coaches are saying,
they're gonna have a chance to be in it.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
And then you look at the East.

Speaker 1 (26:18):
You look at the number two seed, the Boston Celtics
defending that National champions defending champions. This is a solid
basketball team. Although Jason Tatum rolled his ankle last night
as sa Bonus walked underneath them.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
That was bad. But he should be fine. I think
he's gonna be just fine.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
But you start looking at all of the teams in
each division, in each round, and you say who can
win the championship. The Nuggets are a team sitting at
number three that you can't get.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
You can't turn your back on.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
Russell Westbrook had his twenty one thousand point yesterday and
he hit a long three to get that. I mean
not twenty three, but he moved into twentieth in all
time leading scores. But he is a guy that understands
his role with that team, and he's looking for a
championship himself. But you look at Joker, you look at

(27:13):
what Jamal Murray has been able to do. I believe
Gordon is playing a lot better and he's even hitting
three pointers. And then you got Michael Porter Junior. And
of course look at the sideline. The coaching staffs are special.
But I'm wondering if the Lakers can get to the championship,

(27:35):
what's gonna happen in Dallas. Dallas fans are not happy still,
It's kind of quieted down a little bit from all
the things that were going on with them.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
But they're still upset.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
If Anthony Davis can be healthy and finish the season strong,
do you think that they will be able to.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Push the envelope a little bit?

Speaker 1 (27:58):
I think so because if you look at the complimentary pieces,
they're in the right spot.

Speaker 2 (28:04):
You look at what.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
You see from a Anthony Davis, of course, but then
you have PJ.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
Washington who's coming back.

Speaker 1 (28:13):
He's a guy that I truly think can be an
X factor on any other team. You got Spencer Dinwiddie
who's been around for quite some time. Is Klay Thompson
gonna emerge and try to impact this team?

Speaker 2 (28:28):
Yesterday? I think they had eight guys, six.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
Guys in double figures yesterday, six six guys in double figures.
You know why, because there's not one person dominating the basketball.
They're playing unselfishly. I still don't know why Dwight Powell's
on that team, but I digress. I know a lot
of people who've listened to me for a while know
that I'm not a big Dwight Powell thing. But there

(28:56):
are some teams that I'm curious if they're going to
be able to turn it up.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
One of the.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
Teams that I've been talking about for quite some time,
and I think the NBA is wondering if they're going
to be able to do it.

Speaker 2 (29:07):
Is the Timberwolves.

Speaker 1 (29:09):
When you have a guy like Anthony Edwards, who at
one point we thought was going to be the face
of the league, is he going to be able to
show up big in the playoffs given their opportunities. I'm
not sure. Rudy Gobert led the team in scoring yesterday.
When's the last time you heard Rudy Gobert lead the

(29:29):
team in scoring? That's not good. But they are a
team that has a lot of talent that is now
playing in a play in game because they haven't pushed
the envelope. They're going to take on the Clippers in
that moment. They got the Clippers at number seven and
the Timberwolves at number eight. You've got the Kings playing
the Suns. Can k d in his team sitting at

(29:55):
thirty five and thirty seven play themselves out of having
the play in the playing game?

Speaker 2 (30:01):
I think not. I think they're going to be in
the playing game.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
But the problem is if they're not in the playing game,
can Dallas get to that point where they get to
be in the playing game in the East. You have
the number one seed Cavaliers, the number two seed Boston Celtics,
three seed Knicks, who's waiting for Jalen Brunson to come back.

(30:26):
You got the four suitet seed, the Pacers, the five
seed the Bucks. Gianni Santetakoupo MVP caliber player. Is he
ready to take that next step with this squad?

Speaker 2 (30:38):
I believe so.

Speaker 1 (30:39):
I think this is a team that a lot of
folks do not want to see later.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
I think they're going to be a problem.

Speaker 1 (30:46):
The Detroit Pistons have turned their luck around and now
they're sitting at the sixth spot. The number eight, nine,
and ten spots are well, excuse me, seventh spot is
the Hawks.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
That was Quinn Snyder.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
I know a lot of people thought that Quinn Snyder
was gonna come and be the new coach at Texas.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
The Bulls at number nine and the Heat.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
The Heat are in a playing game, and I don't
know if the Heat are able to even get into
the game because they've been playing so bad and they
don't have the leadership that they once had to be
in that situation.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
So I'm just curious to all of that. But just
remember this, if the Heat can get in.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
I'm curious to what their leadership will be because bam
Adebayo believes that he's a point guard coming up next.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
Major League Baseball season.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
Starts in a couple of days, and I want to
talk Al West, and you're gonna hear from Ben Erlander
and what he thinks about the Al West.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
And I kind of agree with them.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone, Welcome back to sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone, tail five Friends to tell five
friends to download the new and improved iHeart Radio app.
That way you can be anywhere and you can still

(32:10):
listen to us. Just like today, You're gonna want to
be paying attention at eleven o'clock because we will be
carrying the Sean Miller introductory press conference as he was
named new head basketball coach for the Texas Men, and
he will address the media at eleven o'clock today. And
of course you can listen to myself and Craig Way

(32:32):
on the on the new and improved iHeartRadio app. No
matter where you are. Mark Henry is out of the country.
He will hopefully be on tomorrow, but we didn't want
to go through the sound information. He has said that
his tour bus that he's on got hit by a
car yesterday and they got behind schedule and they didn't
get to be where he needed to be so he

(32:54):
could be on the show.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
So everybody's fine. Everybody's fine.

Speaker 1 (32:57):
He sent me send Marcus and I have some pictures
of the car and it was one of them little
Mini Coopers that probably could have gotten underneath that bus.
But everybody's okay. So we'll go from there. But major
League Baseball will be started. It started already. It started
in Tokyo, which yesterday I was watching some games and

(33:19):
I saw the Cubs were playing a spring training game,
and I was like, then the Cubs just go and
play in Japan and the games counted for real, and
then they came back to play.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
Spring training games.

Speaker 1 (33:31):
I never understood why they would start it that early
to then bring the teams back, but I digress.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
I got a blessing about that. Yeah, how does that
work with the roster?

Speaker 1 (33:40):
Like, do like the players who make the team, they
don't make the team, but they make the team for
spring training or what?

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Well, No, I think you.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
Make your roster for those trips and then when you
come back, you can add other guys to play in
some of those games if because like right now, Mookie
Betts is dealing with the health issue and they don't
know if he's going to be on the DL or
if he's going to start on Thursday, so other guys
are getting opportunities to play in front of him. So
maybe he starts on the DL and another guy gets

(34:09):
on the team, so they get twenty six guys to
be on the roster to start the season. So you
take your forty man roster, but you take your twenty
six that are going to be on opening Day.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
Those are the guys that get to travel for those matchups.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
But then when you come back, you can maneuver certain
things to see what happened. So it is kind of
a strange deal. Like I said, I was watching a
game yesterday and I'm like, the Cubs are playing a
regular season game against another team and still getting smoked.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
It was against the Astros, by the way.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
So I don't know how it all plays out, but
that was what I saw.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
So now we'll see what moves forward.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
But I wanted to talk about the Al West and
for planning purposes, make sure you tune in tomorrow at
eight seventeen am.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
We will have Chipper Jones.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
That's right, Hall of Famer Chipper Jones will be joining
us to talk all things Major Leagues and give his
predictions to the upcoming season. But I wanted to talk
about the AL West because Ben Verlander. You know him
as a former professional player, but he's also Justin Verlander's brother.

(35:24):
He's done well in the world of talking baseball. Very
proud of him, to be quite honest with you, but
he had some predictions coming into the season about the
AL West and he still believes that the AO West
belongs to the Houston Astros.

Speaker 6 (35:41):
I think the Houston Astros win the American League West
once again this year. Here's why the lineup is still great.
Just still have Jose Altuve, you still have Jordan Alvarez.
Christian Walker is a massive upgrade at first base. The
loss of Kyle Tucker does hurt, but a big reason
that I have the Houston Astros winning the division is

(36:04):
how much I believe in that piece that they acquired
for Kyle Tucker, Cam Smith. I think Cam Smith can
win American League Rookie of the Year. His numbers in
spring training are absurd. He's hitting over four hundred with
a thirteen hundred ops of five hundred on base percentage,
and he has done everything possible to make the team

(36:24):
for the Houston Astros and be the everyday right fielder.
They have a really solid rotation. I think it's better
than the Rangers' rotation over the course of one sixty two.
Give me Framer Valdez, Hunter Brown, Renel Blanco, Spencer Araghatty,
Hayden Westnooski added from the Cubs in that Kyle Tucker trade.
Lance McCullers back on the mound for the first time
the other day since twenty twenty two. In my opinion,

(36:47):
this is a two team race. The Mariners aren't good enough.
It's the same team once again. It's a team that
is going to pitch the lights out any given night.
They could win any given night, they can lose two
to one. So when it comes to the Ale, I
see it being the two team race. Houston Astros first,
the Texas Rangers. Here's the cold, hard truth. The Texas
Rangers ceiling is the highest. The Astros have the highest floor.

(37:12):
With all of the question marks that the Rangers have,
I don't think all of those are going to be answered.
There's too many question marks, and if everything goes right,
they win the division. Cam Smith Rookie of the Year,
Altuve at the top, You're not in the middle, Christian
Walker's fantastic, Kyle Tucker's not there.

Speaker 2 (37:30):
I don't care.

Speaker 6 (37:31):
This team is still good enough to win the American
League West. This team is still good enough. If Cam
Smith steps up and becomes the player I think he
can be this year, this team is good enough to
win the American League. I do think the Houston Astros
are going to ultimately win the division once again.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
Hey Baseball fast catch the round Rock Express right here.
I don't believe so. I don't believe so.

Speaker 1 (37:59):
And the reason why I'm doing that is because of
the simple fact that I believe if the Texas Rangers
pitching rotation is lined up the way that it should be,
they are going to be the most dangerous team out there.
In that pitching rotation will consist of Nathan Uvaldi. We
already know what he brings every single time out. Jack

(38:20):
Lighter finally getting his opportunity to be in the big
leagues and be consistent in the big leagues.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
You have Jacob deGrom.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
That's right, Jacob de Gram is back, and he If
you got Jacob de Gram as your possible fourth starter,
you're doing really, really well. And then of course you
got Kumar Rocker, who got a chance to pitch here
in Round Rock, as did Jack Lighter, and you got
a chance to see him up close and personal. And

(38:52):
every time I watched him pitch, he was outstanding. He
was outstanding every single time he took the mound. So
I look at the Texas Rangers and yes, I know
Framer Valdez and what they've been able to bring to
the table. And you look at Hunter Brown and all
the guys that you have right there, I get it.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
You still have.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
Lance mccullors, who I'm not sure what we're gonna get
from Lance. When Lance is healthy, he's nasty. I'm a
big fan of Lance mccullors. But you still have to
figure out what's gonna happen with your bullpen.

Speaker 2 (39:27):
You have to shore that up.

Speaker 1 (39:29):
And I still believe that the Texas Rangers with that
offense that they have, because their offense is pretty potent
as well. And I know a lot of people don't
want to talk about it, but they have an opportunity
to be a special team as well in the West.
And let's not forget about Wyatt Langford and what he
brings to the table, Josh Smith, who was a utility
guy last year, and then of course Cory Seeger and

(39:52):
Marcus Simeon, guys that can really pound the baseball. I
believe that the Rangers. It is a two team race
between the Rangers and the Astros, but I think the
Rangers win it, but both teams get into the playoffs.
One more segment, we'll close out the show and send
you to Dan Patrick. Coming up next, we'll preview everything

(40:14):
that's going on on the Forty Acres because once again,
it is another busy week on the forty Acres. Right
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Another great show this today as we
continue to roll on. As I said, the forty Acres

(40:34):
has had one of the busiest weeks and will continue
to have a busy week. Today we will have the
press conference for Sean Miller as he has been named
Texas basketball coach. You can hear right here at eleven o'clock,
straight up eleven o'clock on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
the Zone and then you can hear parts of the

(40:54):
interview again this afternoon, I'm sure with Craig Way and
Cam Parker as they bring you the Craig Way Show.
And then it follows into Texas Baseball as they will
be at home tonight taking on Sam Houston. Former Cedar
Ridge baseball player and one of my former players, Danny Valdez,

(41:15):
will be pitching for Sam Houston on the Mount tonight
getting the start. Also, congratulations to the Texas women as
they advanced to the sweet sixteen in Birmingham to take
on Tennessee after a big win yesterday versus Illinois. They
got some special players doing special things as well. But

(41:37):
today you have the press conference as I said, and
you also have the Pro Day for Texas Football. You
can watch that on the SEC network from one to four.
I'm sure Coach Sark will be talking to the media.
Also this week you will have Texas relays going on.
You got softball tonight taking on Steven F. Austin around

(41:59):
across the from the baseball game, so there's a lot
going on on the forty acres. And before we could
turn the page and get ready for Sean Miller to
be the head coach at the University of Texas. I
want to read this letter that coach Rodney Terry left
as he exited from the University of Texas as the

(42:21):
head coach.

Speaker 2 (42:22):
He said Longhorn Nation.

Speaker 1 (42:24):
I'm incredibly grateful for the thirteen years I spent as
a coach on the forty Acres. I loved every moment
and I will cherish the experiences, the memories, the relationships
created that time that created during the time for the
rest of my life. We worked tiresly to win a
national championship, and in our pursuit of doing so, achieved

(42:47):
many other goals as a program and a tremendous amount
of success. I'm proud of the young men that we
have mentored along the way, who eventually graduated from the
prestigious university and go on to have continued success on
and off the court. Becoming the head coach of the
University of Texas was a dream come true. It has
been an honor and a privilege to be your head coach,

(43:10):
and I appreciate your unwavering support. I want to thank
all of our players, coaches, staff, and last but not least,
my family for the dedication and commitment during this journey.
I will forever be a longhorn hook him Rodney Terry,
And at the bottom of it, it says, I served.
I survived yesterday because of God's love. I have today

(43:34):
because of God's grace, and I have tomorrow because of
God's plan. Rodney Terry is a class act. And I
said it before and I'll say it again. He is
one of the most beloved individuals at the University of Texas.
Whether he was a coach or a player, he was
a great guy and he always had a kind word
for every single person that has come into his life.

(43:57):
And because he walks and believes in his a man
of strong faith. I believe that Rodney Terry is going
to be just fine in his next venture. And I
believe that he will land on his feet somewhere else
and that was not going to be the last that
we see of one Rodney Terry. So thank you, coach
for all that you did for this university and what

(44:19):
the expectations that you put up there, and you understand
what it's all about. I want to get into this too,
because there's the number one player in the nation, Aliyah
Chavaz will make her decision today on what university she
will be attending next season. For those that don't know,

(44:42):
she is the top player in the country. She is
a special player in this country and a lot of
schools are waiting for her to make her announcement today
as she decides where she is going to expend the
next four years as a basketball player in college. She

(45:04):
will make that decision today, and I know a lot
of folks are on pins and needles waiting for that answer.

Speaker 2 (45:13):
But I just know that she is.

Speaker 1 (45:16):
She's a prize prize player, and I'm hopeful, and I
know Vick Schaefer and his squad are hopeful that she
makes that decision today to go to the University of Texas.
After she won the state championship, she came down for
a basketball game so she got to see Texas play
in person. She's the number one recruit in the country.

(45:38):
Every team in the country thinks that they have a
chance at her. Obviously, being from Lubbock, Monterey, she Texas
Tech believes that they got a shot at it. But
the announcement will be made this afternoon, so we will
find out where she will be playing basketball next year,
and if she does come to the University of Texas.

(45:59):
I've got a guy, a good friend of mine, that
will come on the show and let us know everything
about her tomorrow. So be on the lookout for that,
because if that can happen, if they can pull this
off and bring that type of player to come in
next year to play with Madison Booker, to play with

(46:19):
the young ladies that are already having a great run
as true freshman at the University of Texas, it will
definitely be something that we will be talking about for
a long time because she is that good of a player,
and I know that Vick Schaeffer will have her and
the crew ready to go. Last, but not least, Texas

(46:40):
football starts today.

Speaker 2 (46:42):
They started practicing today.

Speaker 1 (46:44):
They have the spring practices that have started right now.
And I'm excited for this Texas football team strictly because
it's the new journey. I know a lot of people
are upset because they're not going to have a spring game.
Don't be upset. Coach Sark has told you why that
has happened. He's got brand new staff, he's got brand

(47:06):
new players, and everyone is trying to get a custom
of being a Texas Longhorn. And everything that goes along
with that. There's a lot that has been going on.
There's a lot of off season that very few offseasons
have been like this for Texas, especially remembering that they
played all the way into the semifinal game again with

(47:30):
a chance to play for a national championship. So Texas
has done their job. So don't be upset that there
is no I guess you could say spring game. You're
still gonna get an opportunity to.

Speaker 2 (47:42):
Go out there. You're still gonna have time to go
hang out.

Speaker 1 (47:45):
But most importantly, now you're gonna get brand new players
on the forty acres that are learning how to be
a Texas Longhorn.

Speaker 2 (47:55):
I'm excited about it. I'll be on the forty acres.

Speaker 1 (47:58):
It is going to be a busy, busy day in
a busy busy week.

Speaker 2 (48:02):
Don't forget.

Speaker 1 (48:03):
Texas relays start tomorrow as well, so Texas football starting
to practice. Sean Miller's press conference you can hear right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone starting
straight up at eleven o'clock. Myself, Craig Way, and I'm
sure a ton of people will be at the presser today.

(48:25):
I want to thank my man Marcus Spears for holding
it down.

Speaker 2 (48:28):
I want to thank you.

Speaker 1 (48:29):
The fans for always being there and believing in what
we do. And I want to thank Mark Henry for
letting us know, Hey man, I'm not coming on today
because I'm in a bad, bad area. So hopefully, hopefully
he can get a chance to come on tomorrow and
brighten up today.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
Don't forget Chipper Jones.

Speaker 1 (48:49):
Hall of Famer will be on tomorrow eight seventeen. We
have Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman, and oh
so much more because we will find out about the
commit men of Alia Chavez. Just remember this, don't believe
everything you see because salt looks like sugar.

Speaker 2 (49:07):
Peace.

Speaker 5 (49:09):
